Well it’s Archeological Friday again, time to get your hands dirty, scrambling through the amazing discoveries made over the past week, although I should say published, as I have explained before, it takes quite a time from discovery to publication, unless, of course it was something incredible and then it’s released, but most things take about a minimum of a year from discovery to publication, but to tell the truth, I don’t mind, it’s what the found that excites me, not when they found it.. well coffee and a cookie sounds good to read what they have dug up, as it’s not a bone, Bella went to sleep on my foot…

EGYPTIAN “HAWK MUMMY” EVALUATED…. LONDON, ONTARIO—Live Science reports that high-resolution CT scans of what had been thought to be the 2,100-year-old mummified remains of a hawk are actually the remains of a stillborn human fetus. The fetus, estimated to have been born at a gestational age between 23 and 28 weeks, suffered from anencephaly, a condition in which the brain and skull fail to develop normally. Bioarchaeologist Andrew Nelson of the University of Western Ontario said the identification of the mummy as a hawk votive had been based upon the decoration of the mummy’s cartonnage, which includes depictions of Osiris, the Egyptian god of the underworld, and the goddesses Isis and Nephthys. A bird with a human head is shown flying over Osiris, who is lying on a coffin frame. An Udjat eye, a symbol of protection and good health, is shown at the top of the image. The mummy has been in collections of England’s Maidstone Museum since 1925. Its origins are otherwise unknown.

TAMPA, FLORIDA—According to a Live Science report, 4,000-year-old olive oil has been detected in residues obtained from an egg-shaped ceramic pot unearthed at Castelluccio, an archaeological site in Sicily. The jar, which is decorated with rope bands and three vertical handles on each side, was discovered in hundreds of pieces in one of 12 huts on a rocky ridge at the site in the 1990s. The three-foot-tall jar was reconstructed by conservators at the Paolo Orsi Regional Archaeological Museum in Syracuse, Italy. Davide Tanasi of the University of South Florida and his colleagues said the new dates for the residues suggest olive oil was being systematically produced in Italy about 700 years earlier than previously thought. Two ceramic basins with internal dividers and a large terracotta cooking plate were also found at the site.

ARCHAEOLOGIST EXAMINES POSSIBLE WAKA IN NEW ZEALAND…. AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND—Stuff reports that a kauri tree unearthed during a road construction project on the North Island is not a partially complete waka, or Maori canoe, as had been previously thought. The 55-foot-long piece of trunk had been modified, however. “There is evidence of stones and rocks wedged into the wood to try to split parts off and there are cut edges, but it’s not consistent with waka carving,” said archaeologist Sarah Phear. Branches and logs had been placed under the trunk as part of the preparations to process it. The log was reburied in the trench where it had been found.

EASTER ISLAND’S MASSIVE STONE HATS STUDIED…. BINGHAMTON, NEW YORK—According to a Popular Science report, the Rapa Nui of Easter Island may have used ropes and ramps in a technique known as parbuckling to place 13-ton stone “hats” known as pukao on the heads of the island’s massive moai. Carl Lipo of Binghamton University and his colleagues created 3-D models of pukao based on photographs of them for the study. The researchers rejected the idea that the pukao were dragged or slid into place. Instead, they suggest a pukao would have been rolled from the quarry to the location of the moai, where a line was wrapped around it. The cylinder of the pukao was then pulled up a ramp to a platform at the top of the statue. They estimate it would have taken few resources and just 10 to 15 people to complete the job. Lipo also noted rocky debris around the statues may have been left behind from the construction of ramps.

4,000-YEAR-OLD CHARIOTS FOUND IN NORTHERN INDIA…. UTTAR PRADESH, INDIA—Outlook India reports that three chariots dating to about 1800 B.C. have been unearthed in northern India, at a site made up of eight burials. “The wheels rotated on a fixed axle linked by a draft pole to the yoke of a pair of animals,” said S. K. Manjul of the Institute of Archaeology in Delhi. “The axle was attached with a superstructure consisting of a platform protected by side-screens and a high dashboard.” Copper shaped into triangles thought to represent the rays of the sun decorated the wheels and the pole. Swords with copper-covered hilts, shields, daggers, a helmet, beads, and combs were also recovered. Manjul said the coffins in the burial pits were decorated with copper-plated figures with horns and leafy crowns, suggesting those buried in them may have been royalty. The sides of the coffins were decorated with floral motifs.

REMAINS OF POSSIBLY CRUCIFIED MAN EXAMINED IN ITALY…. FLORENCE, ITALY—Researchers from the University of Ferrara and the University of Florence have examined the 2,000-year-old remains of a man they think might have been crucified, according to a report in Live Science. The poorly preserved bones, which were discovered near Venice in 2007, belonged to a man of slim stature and below average height who had been buried directly into the ground, rather than placed in a tomb with grave goods. “We found a particular lesion on the right calcaneus [heel bone] passing through the entire bone,” said medical anthropologist Emanuela Gualdi of the University of Ferrara. No evidence that his wrists had been nailed to a cross has been found, but Gualdi said they could have been tied to the cross with rope. She notes that crucifixion was commonly used to execute slaves and criminals in Roman society. “We cannot know if he was a prisoner,” she said, “but the burial marginalization indicates that he probably was an individual deemed dangerous or defamed in Roman society.”

Hence, if you have any interest in eating or cooking then read on, else, still give it a read, who knows might fall in love with food and be craving for it.

Now those who know me even a little bit, can well attest to one fact that I love food. People call themselves foodie, I call myself a food fanatic, and my love for it knows no bounds. So naturally I do love cooking as much as eating because it opens up new frontiers.

So, let us make a seven-course meal of words.

I never even tried to recall when and how I started loving to eat, it always felt that I came packaged with that feature, cooking on the other hand is a different story altogether. It was a similar condition as now, closed within four walls in a tightly packed students’ residential area of Delhi preparing for IAS/Med PG did not leave much for recreation or relaxation. Originating in Japan it has its own variants ranging from Korean peninsula to Indonesian archipelago – a low carb, high protein to equally compliment a fat and carb reach of the chelow kebab.

All done and dusted, there is any space left at all you will enjoy your classic French parfait whilst alternating between wanting more of certain things and shallow breathing with a barrel stomach!

All said, (and written), this is something I am aiming for – to cook for my friends, family, and me. A gala dinner with all the courses, maybe to celebrate something maybe just for fun. That’s the best thing about food – you don’t need an occasion for it to be good. You just need a good stove, skillet and a spatula, all condiments in a cauldron, and voila! The dinner is served!

To end this scrumptious eve with some food for thought. The epitaph of the famous astronomer, William Herschel reads, “ Coelorum perrupit claustra ” (He broke through the barriers of the heavens). In terms of output—nearly 3.8 million cars a year, according to the most recent figures—India now nearly matches South Korea, an automobile powerhouse, and is on track to catch up with Germany.

This story holds lessons for Asia’s third largest economy. If automobiles, and by extension manufacturing more broadly, take off in India, the country may be able to generate many of the jobs required to employ the 12 million new entrants to the labor market each year. If manufacturing fails to thrive, India’s economic future could come into question, and along with it the country’s dream of emerging as a global power.

A manufacturing enclave in the high-growth state of Gujarat provides a glimpse of the industry’s possible future. Ford Motor Company’s sprawling, 460-acre facility can churn out 240,000 vehicles and 270,000 engines a year. Nearly two dozen suppliers have set up shop next door, creating a just-in-time manufacturing ecosystem. The plant manager at the time of my visit, Kel Kearns, a former Royal Australian Air Force flight lieutenant, said the highly automated Ford facility is “more like what you’d see in North America or Europe than traditionally in Asia-Pacific.”

It’s hard to overemphasize the importance for India of getting manufacturing right. While the country’s world-class information-technology sector put it on virtually every global boardroom’s agenda, Indian manufacturing trails that of East Asian powerhouses such as South Korea and Taiwan, or even much smaller economies like Vietnam or Bangladesh. As a percentage of GDP, manufacturing in India contributes only about 17 percent, essentially unchanged from the amount it contributed at the advent of economics reforms back in 1991.

To put this in perspective, manufacturing accounts for 29 percent of economic output in China and South Korea, and 27 percent in Thailand, according to World Bank data. Moving millions of workers from farms to factories has played a pivotal role in reducing poverty and raising living standards across East Asia.

It should come as no surprise, then, that India seeks to raise manufacturing as a percentage of GDP from 17 percent to 25 percent, and to create 100 million jobs within a decade. Shortly after his 2014 election, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the “Make in India” campaign with the avowed goal of transforming India “into a global design and manufacturing hub.”

Against this backdrop of patchy industrialization, the relative success of India’s car industry reveals how a once-closed sector gradually—and without receiving much attention—became the world’s sixth-largest automobile manufacturer. Ford is just one of many firms with a presence in India. Suzuki, Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, Volkswagen, BMW, General Motors, Mercedes Benz, Mitsubishi, Renault, Audi, Nissan, and Skoda all manufacture in the country now. They add to the variety of models available from India’s dominant domestic makers: Maruti Suzuki (a pioneering joint venture now majority-owned by Japan’s Suzuki), Tata Motors (which includes Jaguar Land Rover), Mahindra and Mahindra, Hindustan Motors, and Premier Automobile. That list does not include manufacturers focused on the motorcycle and scooter markets that still account for the vast majority of vehicle sales in India.

Even before India’s economic opening in 1991, a state-led experiment planted the seeds of India’s auto flowering. In 1981, the state-owned enterprise Maruti Udyog sought an international partner to manufacture subcompact cars for India’s growing middle class through a government-licensed joint venture. Suzuki was selected the next year, and the partnership flourished. The first car, a boxy white knockoff of the Japanese-made Suzuki Fronte, rolled off a factory floor outside Delhi in 1983.

The Maruti Suzuki brand remains India’s top seller; even the tiny Maruti 800 still lives on in the restyled Alto 800. But it was not until the mid-1990s, after liberalization, that India opened the automobile industry to major investment by foreign manufacturers. That’s when the major U.S., Asian, and European automakers, faced with stagnating home markets, began streaming into India.

In the 2000s, Indian automakers began to look abroad. Tata Motors acquired Jaguar Land Rover from Ford in 2008, and by 2012 had turned the loss-making company around. Mahindra and Mahindra took a majority stake in Korea’s Ssangyong Motor in 2011, and in the Italian design house Pininfarina S.p.A. in 2015. As a showcase for the industry, India’s Auto Expo took off internationally in 2008, receiving accreditation from the Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs d’Automobiles, a Paris-based trade group. I attended in 2010, and was blown away by the scale and variety on display, from the micro-sized Tata Nano to sleek Audi sedans to Mahindra and Mahindra SUVs to motorcycles of every variety.

By the early 2000s, supplying to global car manufacturers for their local as well as global supply chains had helped India emerge as a high-quality global source for auto components. (Think radiator caps and the like.) The Chennai-based Sundram Fasteners won Japanese quality awards and became the first Indian company to supply General Motors. But India had not yet emerged as a global auto hub in the way that Thailand and South Korea had become, and lagged far behind China. In 2004, India produced a little under 1.18 million cars, while South Korea produced 3.12 million. By the end of 2016, India’s 3.68 million produced had nearly caught up with South Korea’s 3.86 million.

India’s urge to industrialize reflects its ambition to join the front ranks of the world’s powers. But it also reflects a more pressing concern: About 50 percent of India’s employed depend on agriculture for a living, but, according to the World Bank, the country’s small and unproductive farms contribute only 17.4 percent of GDP. With 12 million Indians coming of working age each year, the country needs to ensure there are enough jobs to employ its fast-growing and youthful (by global standards) workforce. This means creating jobs across a wider range of occupations, unshackling manufacturing from artificial constraints that have limited its growth, and also training workers for available opportunities.

India’s automobile industry created 25 million jobs between 2006 and 2016. It accounts for 7 percent of GDP and employs, directly or indirectly, around 19 million people. It has the potential to spur more extensive industrialization, just as it has in every major country that has emerged as an auto powerhouse.

Indeed, the auto industry boasts one of the highest “employment multipliers” of any industry in the U.S., meaning it helps create jobs even beyond the realm of manufacturing. While the structure of the industry in the U.S. differs significantly from that in India, it’s nonetheless useful as a point of comparison. According to the Ann Arbor, Michigan–based nonprofit Center for Automotive Research, each U.S. vehicle-manufacturing job creates nearly seven other jobs across the U.S. economy (ranging from supply-chain manufacturing to dealers to finance to after-market services and others). As the case of Maruti Suzuki illustrates, the involvement of foreign manufacturers has provided technology that can bring Indian parts and vehicles up to global standards, and therefore make them export-ready, another major benefit.

For all these reasons, the auto industry offers a special opportunity for Indian manufacturing, and one shared with other advanced manufacturing industries such as defense, steel, aircraft, and shipbuilding. Defense and shipbuilding have been the targets of recent policy reforms—similarly geared toward spurring growth in large industries that can have powerful knock-on employment effects. And for aircraft, not India’s traditional strength, change may come soon: Lockheed Martin has just proposed to relocate its entire F-16 production line to India, and is now signed up with the Tata group as its partner. (Whether the Indian government selects this aircraft is of course another matter.)

Car manufacturers have bet on the expansion of India’s domestic market. Ford estimated in 2015 that India's compact-car segment, which has accounted for around 45 percent of the passenger-vehicle market, would grow from 1.1 million in 2014 to 1.6 million in 2018.This figure still looks small compared to the size of India’s population, because passenger vehicles do not yet dominate Indian roads. But it also indicates India’s vast room for further growth as its middle class expands and seeks to transport families more safely by moving up to a car from a scooter or motorcycle. In 2016, Americans bought more than 17.5 million passenger vehicles (meaning cars and SUVs); the Chinese bought a little over 28 million.

Of course, not everybody believes that India will be able to replicate the manufacturing success of its East Asian peers. Even assuming that further (and long-overdue) reforms advance expeditiously, India’s manufacturing prospects will intersect with global technological and economic trends. Changes have been unfolding worldwide that raise questions about whether a focus on manufacturing can bring prosperity. Around the world, the rise of automation has raised quality standards and productivity, but at the cost of jobs. The rise of 3-D printing has only just begun, and could affect supply-chain considerations to an as-yet-unknown extent. These two trends alone are just in their infancy.

For the developing world in particular, there are concerns about the prospect of “premature deindustrialization,” to cite the Harvard economist Dani Rodrik’s work. The term describes a downturn in the share of manufacturing in developing countries well before their economies match those of wealthier nations. Rodrik attributes this in part to the effects of trade and globalization—competition from China and other major manufacturers on the global market—which suggests that India (and sub-Saharan Africa for that matter) would have a hard time patterning its growth on China’s labor-intensive strategy.

These developments, while potentially destabilizing, are no reason for Indian officials to stop trying to promote manufacturing. Morgan Stanley’s Ruchir Sharma, reflecting on the implications of technological change, notes in his Rise and Fall of Nations that the robotics revolution “is likely to be gradual enough to complement rather than destroy the human workforce.” He ventures that “new jobs we can’t yet imagine” will help fill the gap. Development institutions like the World Bank, along with management consultancies like McKinsey, continue to see opportunity for India to do more to reform laws and policies that inhibit manufacturing’s growth, whether for the domestic market or for export. In 2016, a World Bank report recommended policy changes to help the countries of South Asia, with India a notable focus, benefit from rising wages in China that result in the relocation of apparel sourcing and the potential for job growth. The same year, McKinsey Global Institute issued a set of recommendations that included “Manufacturing for India, in India” in its top five “opportunities for growth and transformation.”

McKinsey believes that the technological impact on India may take some time to be fully felt. In a recent discussion paper focused on labor, the firm’s researchers cite scenarios in which it could take “two decades or more” for automation to hit more than half of work in some countries, which means India has a window in which to ramp up its manufacturing sector as a job-creating engine before automation becomes more widespread.

India has big ambitions for its place in the global order—and seeks to amp up its economy up to help deliver that transformation. The automobile sector has its own part to play in this vision. India’s “Automotive Mission Plan 2026,” a joint vision of the country’s government and car makers, aims for the auto industry to become one of the world’s top three, contribute 12 percent of India’s GDP, make up 40 percent of India’s manufacturing sector, and generate 65 million jobs by 2026. These goals are part of India’s larger quest to emerge as a major industrial power.

If it succeeds, it will likely secure the place it seeks as a leading global power. Like the Hindustan Motors Ambassador, India’s status as a country perpetually on the brink of arrival—but never quite there—might at last belong to history.

Weaving, dyeing, knitting and stitching are important social and economic activities of people in this side of the country, whose living is marred with constraints and realities of natural resources and difficult terrains. Yet, their endurance and talent are exhibited through beautiful carpets, knitwear, basketry and silk looms. Such is the potpourri of handlooms and crafts; a beautiful glossary of cultural expressions of the people of north east.

Muga silk and Mekhela Chador, Assam

Known as Muga, it is one of the Geographical Indications from the state (meaning being native to the region) and is celebrated for its elegance and rawness. Across the banks of Brahmaputra in Sualkochi, families engage in sericulture and produce fabulous Eri, Pat and Muga silk weaves and crafts. The speciality of Muga is that it gets shinier with every wash, preserving and enhancing durability of its silk. With every wash, these weaves look newer, richer and more colourful! One popular trendsetter of Muga and other silks is the ‘Mekhela Chador’, the traditional attire of Assamese women. Mekhela Chador is the heritage wear of women during dances and ceremonies. On the Chador, ethnic embroidery of Japi and Kaziranga wildlife, are woven in red, green and golden. The latter also known as ‘Rhino’ embroidery, is emblematic of identity and cultural symbolism embellished on eternal textiles with messages on wildlife conservation and preservation.

Indigenous Arunachali Mishmi, Adi, Apatani people are adept at weaving and experimenting with weaving stripes, geometric patterns, rhombus and diamond shaped embroidery. ‘Adi’ tribe for instance, uses plain stripes in red, black white or yellow. Similarly, ‘Apatani’ tribe weaves are also a combination of lines and geometric patterns. Then there is the intricate ‘Mishmi’ tribe pattern with straight lines with rhombus shaped patterns carved all over. ‘Singhpo’ women also engage in traditional loom weaving and dyeing. One popular product is the ‘Bilan-abi’, a type of Arunachali skirt made with red, blue and white patterns in vertical bands

Similarly ‘Sherdukpen’ bag knitting is very popular among women. These traditional dresses are usually complimented with Arunachali jewellery made of turquoise blue, yellow, green and white beads. Popular designs are also called ‘Bilangabi’ that uses red, blue, black and white glass beads.

Manipur’s rich tradition of dance has popularised heritage dresses, shawls and silk jewellery. The ‘Tangkhul’ tribe has several kinds of hand woven cloths and shawls that are predominantly red in colour. A traditional attire is known as ‘Innaphi, cotton saris and sarongs known as ‘Phanek’ and ‘Haopheisoi are other vintage clothing from here. Additionally, light weight cocoon craft earrings are gaining attention from Manipur. These beautiful hand-made by products of silk extraction are also available at the ‘Panthoibi Manipur Handicrafts Emporium’ in Delhi. Once silk extraction is complete, these cocoons are dyed and recycled into colourful earrings and jewellery.

Khasi Dhara, Meghalaya

Sericulture and weaving are important cottage industries in Meghalaya making these the backbone of rural economy. Indigenous tribe of Khasi is famous for their traditional ‘Khasi Dhara’ or ‘Jainsem worn on special occasions. The heritage dresses are made of Mulberry yarns in various colours and border patterns. Dhara is hand woven and women of the ‘Ri Bhoi’ district specialize in weaving ‘Eri’ silks keeping these timeless handlooms alive. A special technique of dyeing is used using vegetable colors once the fabric is woven on traditional floor looms, thus making the entire process indigenous and authentic. Another traditional wear called ‘Dakmanda’ is the attire of Garo women.

Puanchei and Puandum wear, Mizoram

‘Thenzawl’ in Mizoram was named the Handloom city in 2014, owing to the rich and colourful textile hub that it is. In addition to bamboo basketry and weaving, Mizo people have colourful attractions that make this place an epicenter for handloom development. Customary attires such as ‘Puanchei’ and ‘Puandum’ worn during festivals are made of black, red and white shades. ‘Kawrechi’ is a form of traditional blouse worn by Mizo girls. The ‘Puan’ is made of silks and have embroidery on it. Traditional attire of women to be worn on their wedding is called ‘Puon Pie’.

Elaborate motifs in black, blue, red, green, white and yellow are woven into warm Naga shawls, mufflers and stoles. In fact, the famous Angami shawls are also popularly known as the ‘warrior shawls’ of Nagaland. Typical geometric pattern on borders render these creations a typical avant-garde appeal. A unique feature of these weaves is that three pieces are woven separately and stitched together. Historically and much before the advent of woollen apparel, Naga shawls were made of threads extracted from tree barks. In addition to traditional dresses, ‘thara’ weaves are used for making bedspreads, bags, belts, curtains, cushion covers, table mats etc. Carpet weaving practiced by the Bhutia tribe and Angora knitwear are also popular in the state. Sikkimese expressions and heavily inspired from Tangkha paintings and Buddhist iconography.
