Schloss Einstein Rewatch Folge 39 - 41
Olivers Eltern, oh weia...

Marlene Dietrich - The Queer Icon
Marie Magdalene "Marlene" Dietrich (born in Berlin, Germany on 27 December 1901) was a German-born actress who often blurred the feminine and masculine, making her "The Queer Icon."
Dietrich's earliest appearances were as a chorus girl in 1922. Making film history, she was cast in Germany’s first talkie The Blue Angel (1930) by director Josef von Sternberg. With the success of the movie, von Sternberg took her to Hollywood under contract to Paramount Pictures. She soon had hits like Morocco (1930) and Shanghai Express (1932).
When war broke, she set up a fund to help Jews and dissidents and toured extensively for the allied effort. After the war, she limited her cinematic life.
In 1953, Dietrich appeared live at Sahara Hotel in Las Vegas. This was so successful that she also appeared at Café de Paris in London and Broadway.
She continued to tour as a marquee performer until 1975, when she fell onstage. She spent her final years mostly bedridden, passing away at 90 in her Paris flat from kidney failure.

Zurich Zest: Discovering the Swiss City’s Modern Charm
Zurich, Switzerland’s largest city, is known for its stunning mix of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and modern flair. Whether you’re drawn to its vibrant art scene, cutting-edge architecture, or serene lakeside views, Zurich has something for every traveler. If you’re planning a day to explore the city, here’s a guide that covers the best of Zurich’s modern charm in a single day.
Morning: Stroll Along Bahnhofstrasse and the Old Town
Start your day early at Bahnhofstrasse, Zurich’s famous shopping street, known for its high-end boutiques, luxury stores, and bustling atmosphere. As you walk along this 1.4 km stretch from Zurich's main train station to the shores of Lake Zurich, take in the blend of historical architecture and sleek, modern storefronts. Even if shopping isn’t on your agenda, Bahnhofstrasse offers a great sense of the city’s sophistication and cosmopolitan energy.
After a leisurely stroll, head towards Altstadt (Old Town), just a few minutes away. Here, modern Zurich merges seamlessly with its medieval past. Wander through the narrow, cobbled streets and discover charming buildings that date back to the Renaissance. Don’t miss the Grossmünster, a Romanesque-style Protestant church with striking twin towers that have become an iconic part of Zurich’s skyline.
Late Morning: Kunsthaus Zurich and Zurich West
Next, take a short tram ride to Kunsthaus Zurich, one of Switzerland’s most important art museums. Here, you’ll find an extensive collection of modern and contemporary art, including works by renowned artists such as Picasso, Monet, and Chagall. It’s a perfect spot to soak in Zurich’s cultural vibrancy.
After exploring the Kunsthaus, hop on a tram to Zurich West, the city’s trendiest district. What was once an industrial area has transformed into a hub of creativity, filled with art galleries, boutique shops, and stylish cafés. Walk through the vibrant streets, take in the urban art installations, and explore Viadukt, a former railway viaduct that’s now home to a range of restaurants and shops.
Lunch: Dining with a View
For lunch, head to one of Zurich’s many lakeside restaurants for a meal with a view. Lake Zurich offers a picturesque setting to enjoy Swiss cuisine or international fare. You can try local favorites like Rösti (crispy potato pancakes) or indulge in something lighter like a fresh salad with locally sourced ingredients. One popular spot is Fischstube, a casual lakeside eatery where you can enjoy fresh fish while admiring the serene water and the Alps in the distance.
If you’re more into the urban scene, grab a bite at one of the hip cafés in Zurich West, where you’ll find a variety of vegetarian and international options.
Afternoon: A Cruise on Lake Zurich
After lunch, relax with a boat tour on Lake Zurich. A short cruise offers a unique view of the city from the water, as well as the surrounding mountains. Many cruises last about 90 minutes, making it a perfect break in your day to unwind and take in the beauty of Zurich’s natural setting.
Alternatively, if you’re visiting during the warmer months, you can enjoy a lakeside walk or rent a paddle boat for a more active experience. The clear waters and pristine backdrop make for an unforgettable afternoon.
Mid-Afternoon: Swiss National Museum
After your lake cruise, return to the heart of the city and visit the Swiss National Museum, located right next to Zurich’s main train station. This impressive museum offers a deep dive into Switzerland’s history and culture, with exhibits that cover everything from medieval artifacts to contemporary design. The museum’s modern extension, with its angular glass façade, is a striking contrast to the original building’s castle-like appearance.
If you’re a history buff, the Swiss National Museum is a must-visit, offering both temporary and permanent exhibitions that give you a comprehensive look at Swiss heritage.
Late Afternoon: Lindenhof and Modern Architecture
Next, make your way to Lindenhof Hill, one of Zurich’s best-kept secrets. This tranquil spot offers panoramic views of the city and the Limmat River, making it an ideal place to reflect on your day. It’s a peaceful area, perfect for a short rest, surrounded by both historical buildings and Zurich’s ever-evolving skyline.
From there, continue to explore Zurich’s modern architectural wonders, such as Prime Tower, one of Switzerland’s tallest buildings. The area around Prime Tower is home to several cutting-edge buildings and offers a glimpse into Zurich’s role as a global financial center.
Evening: Dinner and Nightlife in Zurich West
As the day winds down, head back to Zurich West for dinner. This area is a hotspot for Zurich’s modern culinary scene, with restaurants that offer everything from traditional Swiss dishes to innovative fusion cuisine. Try Frau Gerolds Garten, a trendy urban garden that combines fresh, seasonal food with a vibrant atmosphere, perfect for a relaxed evening.
After dinner, stay in Zurich West to explore the city’s nightlife. The district is known for its lively bars, rooftop lounges, and clubs, offering a variety of options to enjoy Zurich’s vibrant night scene. Whether you’re looking for a quiet cocktail at a sleek bar or a lively night out at a club, Zurich West has it all.
Practical Tips for Your Day in Zurich
Getting Around: Zurich’s public transport system is excellent, with trams, buses, and boats covering the entire city. A day pass is a convenient option for unlimited travel.
Weather: Be prepared for quick weather changes. Pack a light jacket or umbrella, even in the summer months.
Language: While Swiss German is the local language, most people speak excellent English, so communication is easy for travelers.
Currency: Switzerland uses the Swiss Franc (CHF), so make sure to have some local currency, though credit cards are widely accepted.
