Hidden Gems in Zurich: Uncovering the City's Secret Treasures
Zurich, a beautiful city located in north-central Switzerland is well-known for its picturesque landscapes, vibrant cultural scene, and as a global financial hub. It is often remembered for its iconic attractions like Lake Zurich, the Old Town, and the Bahnhofstrasse. However, beyond these well-trodden paths, it has a wealth of hidden gems that offer a unique glimpse into the city’s rich history, culture, and natural beauty.
1. Felsenegg: A Panoramic Escape
Felsenegg, located just a short cable ride from the city, is a lesser-known vantage point that offers stunning panoramic views of Zurich, the lake, and the distant Alps. Unlike the more crowded Uetliberg Mountain, Felsenegg provides a peaceful retreat where you can enjoy nature hikes, picnics, or simply soak in the breathtaking scenery.

URBAN LANDSCAPE
Zurich
Zürich or Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland and the capital of the canton of Zürich. It is located in north-central Switzerland at the northwestern tip of Lake Zürich. The municipality has approximately 409,000 inhabitants, the urban agglomeration 1.315 million and the Zürich metropolitan area 1.83 million. Zürich is a hub for railways, roads, and air traffic. Both Zurich Airport and railway station are the largest and busiest in the country.
Switzerland’s largest city is on the shore of its glistening eponymous lake. Zürich is a financial powerhouse with a liveability ranking that outstrips almost anywhere in the world.
Fraumünster Church
Founded in 853 by King Louis the German, this church with its convent was inhabited by the female members of the aristocracy of Europe. The convent enjoyed the patronage of kings and the abbess the right to mint coins in Zurich until well into the 13th century. Ownership of the church and convent passed to the city of Zurich after the Reformation.
Important architectural features include the Romanesque chancel and the high vaulted transept. The nave was last renovated in 1911.
Its most stunning treasures are the stained glass windows.
Fraumünster abbey, Münsterhof, old Kornhaus (to the left side) and Zunfthaus zur Meisen. Aquarell by Franz Schmid, showing situation in 1757.
Grossmünster
The two towers of this Romanesque church could well be Zürich’s most prominent landmark. The Grossmünster, originally a monastic church, was begun at the start of the 12th century and was finished just over a century later.
Anyone keen on medieval architecture will be taken with the main portal and its sculpted capitals bearing grotesques. The crypt, the oldest part of the church, is also original and has faded frescoes by Hans Leu the Elder from the 1400s.
In the 16th century Grossmünster was ground zero for the Reformation in Switzerland, initiated by Huldrych Zwingli, and the church broke from the papacy in 1523. There’s a museum about these events at the church. The stained glass windows are modern, and in the choir these composed by Alberto Giacometti, while there’s also a set by German modern artist Sigmar Polke.
Other Interesting places in Zurich :
Lake Zurich
There is no better way to enjoy Lake Zurich than along the lakeside promenade. This long, crescent shaped lake curves past the wooded peaks of Pfannenstiel to the east and the Albis chain to the west. There are many ways to make the most of the lake, some we’ll go into more detail about later. But for convenience if you’re just ambling around the city, take the scenic promenade along the east shore in the Seefeld quarter. There you can look over to Uetliberg and see the hundreds of yachts and other craft breezing across the lake in summer. The promenade starts at Bellevue and extends for three kilometres down to Tiefenbrunnen.
It’s one of a network of walkways plotted around the lakeshore in the 1880s.
Swiss National Museum
Switzerland’s biggest collection of historical artefacts awaits at this museum that explores Swiss culture and guides you on a trip through the country’s past. You’ll begin with prehistoric weapons tools and pottery and move through the ages to the 20th century.
Certain eras are particularly well represented, like the medieval period and its masterful Gothic art. Extending into the Renaissance is the extensive collection of wooden images, carved altars and triptychs from chapels and churches around the country. You can also witness Swiss art movements in the gallery and browse the contents of Zürich’s former armoury.
All of this is housed in a sumptuous Renaissance Revival palace dating to 1898.
Side note
Spoken language; german, French, italian, rumantsch (traditionally spoken in different region (contons) of the country )
Geographically the country is divided between the alpine region of the swiss alps in south
The swiss plateau with its rolling hills, plains, and large lakes and the mountain jura in northwest.
Switzerland is a famous tourist destination for its ski resorts and hiking trails. Banking and finance are key industries and swiss watches and choclate are world renowned.

Sommer in der Schweiz
Courtesy of the ThinkSwiss Research Scholarship, I spent 12 weeks this summer in Switzerland studying computational astrophysics at the University of Zürich’s Institute for Computational Science. Because of this scholarship, I had access to the University’s facilities and faculty, which are highly respected in the astrophysics community.
I applied for and received the scholarship primarily for my research. I worked with Ph.D. students, post-doctoral researchers and faculty to study how galaxies form and evolve throughout the history of the universe using high-resolution cosmological simulations from the Feedback in Realistic Environments (FIRE) collaboration. Through the close interactions with my advisor, we crafted realistic goals for the summer, which I achieved and am now writing a paper to be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal. This experience exposed me to the daily life of research and Ph.D. students, confirming that graduate school is the next step for me, which is much more significant personally than anything else I did this summer.
Beyond my daily work, I spent much of my time enjoying the city of Zürich, exploring Switzerland and traveling throughout Europe. Zürich is a phenomenal city, with a variety of activities for all interests. My coworkers/friends and I frequented swimming in Zürichsee by the Chinagarten or in the Limmat by Dynamo (pictured), hiking Zürich’s tallest point Uetliberg or walking around Hardbrücke and Langstrasse. Outside of the city, I visited the cities of Luzern, Lugano, Bern and Basel, and hiked in Engelberg (pictured), Stoos (pictured), Lavertezzo and Arth. Each of the cities and mountain towns were wonderful, and my only regret from the summer was not spending more time in these cities plus others like Interlaken and Geneva. Switzerland truly is a breathtaking country, where you can go sledding (pictured) and swim in a public lake (pictured) in the same day in the middle of July, after eating bolognese pasta with applesauce. Beyond the country, travel to other countries was readily available by bus, train and/or plane depending on the location.
This summer was an awesome period of growth, and I encourage all prospective students to apply. My professional experiences confirmed my plan of going to graduate school and provided me with networking connections at other schools around the world. Socially, I met a wonderful collection of friends from work and from the ThinkSwiss Retreat, which every scholar should attend at all costs, after knowing zero people that were in the same continent as me when I arrived. Personally, I gained a global perspective being around individuals from so many different countries and backgrounds, and I learned how to curse in so many languages by watching the FIFA world cup matches.

New Post has been published on https://www.travelonlinetips.com/beautiful-places-to-visit-in-switzerland/
Beautiful Places to Visit in Switzerland
Switzerland is spectacular. Whenever anyone asks us where have we seen the most beautiful mountains in the world, we always reply “The Swiss Alps.” After our latest visit to Switzerland, our opinion was reiterated tenfold. With every turn in every destination, we looked on in awe as we remarked how we felt we were walking through a work of art. As one person put it when writing in a journal sitting on a bench at the top of Grindelwald First “I feel like I am looking at a Bob Ross painting.”
Best Places to Visit in Switzerland
Switzerland has more beautiful places than just in the Alps, there’s the enchanting Lake Lugano sharing its border with Italy, beautiful Basel which we fell in love with, and the sophisticated city of Zurich. It can be difficult deciding where to go when planning a trip, so we are going to break down the most beautiful places to visit in Switzerland to help you choose. Or better yet, do as we did and see them all!
Swiss Alps
I know we said there is more to Switzerland than the Swiss Alps, but they truly house the most spectacularly beautiful places in Switzerland, so we are going to start in the mountains. The Alpine Region is impossible to beat when it comes to beautiful landscapes in the country. Plus, the Swiss have done an outstanding job making their mountain peaks accessible and easy for everyone to see. From Grindelwald to Jungfrau in the Bernese Oberland Region to St. Moritz and Zermatt-Matterhorn, these mountain destinations should be put at the top of your list of places to visit in Switzerland.
1. Jungfraujoch, Top of Europe
Jungfraujoch, Top of Europe is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and it truly lives up to the hype. Picking The Right Bag For Backpacking Via Europe
This tends to make carrying everything much more comfy and distributes the weight of your bag much more evenly over your shoulders and back.
Following tiring yourself out why not go to the Agnesviertel which is filled with nearby retailers and cafes.
If it will snow, pack boots. For warm weather, pack two pairs of shorts or informal skirts, a couple of short-sleeve T-shirt and a light pair of walking footwear. Keep in thoughts that some religious websites need covering your arms, legs or head, so consist of a light jacket or a scarf just in situation.
Looking for awe-inspiring and beautiful scenery? Then Iceland. is the location for you. There are glaciers, scorching springs, geysers, energetic volcanoes and ice and lava fields to marvel at.
This can save money, as well. Following all, having to pay for a number of inexpensive backpacks can end up costing much more than 1 great bag.
Visiting in the off-season, which is anytime in addition to the summer time months, is a great way to see much more and steer clear of crowds.
Just waking up and choosing to go to an additional country on a whim, not the most cost-effective choice but certainly the best. The owners did the best to make everybody really feel at home.
My preference would be Tripadvisor (or) Wikitravel (or) Lonely Planet guides. Well I personally do not plan in advance, I favor to go by the nearby ideas.
I was really planning going as an Au Pair to FRance, (Is truly inexpensive and enjoyable) I´m in the paperwork thing, because 2 weeks in the past, but because I´m 31, they say I don´t have anything for certain however.
Traveling by rail is the best way to go between these 3, as distances are fairly short.
I think the best time to cover europe is the 2nd half of September! Use the Eurail pass. It is constructed for backpackers like you..
And if you are a member of our Executive Club, you can earn additional Avios every time you fly in Club Europe and bonus Avios when you guide 1 of our luxury holidays. Upgrading to Club Europe might cost much less than you think.
If a number of routes had been available, then the quickest route was selected when traveling both with public transportation or by foot (excluding taxis). To evaluate the cities and rank them correctly, we calculated the value of the time taken to travel to the city center from the respective airports, train stations and bus stations.
Backpacking in Europe is what everybody in the globe desires. It’s like you are adult when you have been backpacking there. However, right here are some of the suggestions you should read prior to starting your Europe backpacking journey. 3 Are You Backpacking Alone or with Friends?
I booked a inexpensive flight from Barcelona to Paris that left at 6am. I did not think about the reality that I would have to depart my hostel at 3am in order to get to the airport on time.
However, because they are less expensive, they lack some of the amenities that make stay in a hotel really feel luxurious. 1 of those amenities is towels, so if you are planning to shower (which hopefully you are) you will want to deliver your own. Normal bathroom towels take up a great deal of area and dry gradually.
Getting travelled solo all through much of Europe and the rest of the globe, I have definitely discovered that some nations are much more appropriate than others for solo travellers. Last year I took A Year To Myself and started my adventures across all 6 continents in Europe for the first 4 months.
Relaxed in the stunning environment of Zurich and hiked Uetliberg mountain to get a leading see of the city. Felt like I am in Rio for a 2nd when I noticed this copy of Christ the Redeemer statue on leading of the Uetliberg.
Boasting wealthy risottos, creamy polenta and much more wine bars than picturesque alleyways, it is a ideal place to start or end any meals-filled go to to Italy.
Browse via Europe tour packages from India today. You can get affordable Europe tour packages from Mumbai. This is 1 journey you ought to take solely for the destination’s sake!
