The Weekly Gravy #178
Linda Martina Young expresses Black womanhood through dance in Four Women. I didn’t get to the movies this weekend (given the box-office returns, I’m not the only one), so let’s start things off with some shorts! Preobražaj (1973) – Divna Jovanović was best known as a costume designer, but she directed four short films, this being the last. The title translates to “metamorphosis,” but it’s got…

Arrowverse Characters born in or after ‘89
So tangentially to this post about Zari I made yesterday, here’s a list of significant characters (typically recurring or at least children of a main) born after 1989. The basic idea is they’re under 30, though that gets complicated with time-travelling and flashforwards.
This does include characters from Black Lightning.
Sometimes actors’ ages are used, because even though their character ages may differ slightly, they are definitely intended to fit in the category
Alex Danvers (1989)
Caitlin (Feb 28, 1989)
Barry (Mar 14, 1989)
Iris (Jun 24, 1989)
Felicity (Jul 24, 1989)
Cisco (Carlos was born in 1989)
Eve Tessmacher (Andrea was born in 1989)
Raya Van Zandt (Gabrielle was born in 1989)
Emiko (1989)
Joe Wilson (William was 13 when he played the young version of the character in a scene set in 2004; Liam who plays older Joe was born ca. 1990)
ETA 8/30/20: Kate Kane and Elizabeth “Alice” Kane (Jan 26,1990)
Adam Foster (1990)
ETA 8/30/20: William Dey likely fits here
Kara landed on Earth at age 13 in 2003 (but was probably actually born c. 1966)
Kendra (Ciara was born in 1990)
ETA 8/30/20: Chester Runk (July 5, 1991)
Roy (Jul 13, 1991)
Linda Park (Malese was born in 1991)
ETA 8/30/20: Sophie Moore (1991 or 1992)
Spencer Young (Kiana was born in 1992)
Lena Luthor (1993)
Jax (Sep 12, 1993) error in an episode
Anissa (Jun 28, 1994)
Luke and Mary (played by Camrus Johnson b. 1994 and Nicole Kang b. 1991, respectively) from “Batwoman” will likely fit around here
Thea (Jan 21, 1995)
ETA 8/30/20: Mary Hamilton (May 17, 1995)
Edit 10/18/20: Jax- late 1995 (turned 21 in late 2016)
Jesse Quick (Violett was born in 1996, but Jesse seems older than Wally, having already been to and graduated from college before he applies)
Wally (1995 or 1996)
Joslyn (Reina was born in 1996)
Nia (Nicole was born in 1997)
Cindy Simone aka Sin (1997)
Joanie (1998)
ETA 8/30/20: Luke Fox graduated high school in 2015, probably age 17 at the latest, so born in 1998 or later- actor Camrus Johnson b. 1994
Mona (Ramona was born in 1998)
ETA 8/30/20: Allegra (Feb 23, 1999)- her cousin Esperanza is unlikely to have been born before 1994 as they were in juvie together when Allegra was 13
Evelyn (1999)
Akio (b. somewhere between 2000 and 2002, d. 2010)
Khalil (b. 2001, d. 2019)
Jennifer (Oct 7, 2001)
George Lockwood (Graham was born in 2002)
Carter Grant (Levi was born in 2002)
Nora Darhk (Dec 2, 2003; adult Legend Nora is probably from 2039)
ETA 8/30/20: Lita Rory (2004)
AJ Diggle (2004 or 2005)
ETA 8/30/20: Parker Torres is in high school during BW S1 so let’s estimate age 16 in 2020, born 2004
Zoe Ramirez (Eliza was born in 2004; even though 28 year old Andrea played flashforward Zoe in 2038, Eliza’s age is likely closer to the character’s)
Ruby Arias (2005)
ETA 6/28: Astra Logue born 2005, d. 2014
William Clayton (2006 or 2007)
Grant Wilson (Slade, who didn’t know about his son until 2017, fathered Grant before arriving on the island in 2007, so probably 2007 or 2008)
Marcus the Phorian (Lonnie was born in 2007)
Zari (2009 or 2010- she was 9 in May 2019; original adult Legend Zari was from 2042)
Mikhail from Kaznia (Gabriel was probably born after 2010)
Connor Hawke (Aiden’s age isn’t available online, and Joseph was cast as the character for a different future; this one is definitely a guess, but Connor was probably born in 2011 ca. 2013 or later)
Sara Diggle (b. Oct 8, 2014, Flashpointed in 2016)
JJ Diggle (Nov 2014, after Flashpoint)
ETA 8/02: Ronnie, Lily Stein’s son (fall 2017)
Jenna West (May 22, 2018)
Clark and Lois’ child (Conner Kent?- likely late spring 2019)
Wickstable/ Mithra (May 2019)
Behrad Tomaz (summer 2019; in “Legends” S5 2020 he was travelling back to 2044)
Mia Smoak (late fall 2019)
Nora West-Allen (b. in the early 2020s, adult Flash Nora was from the late 2030s, Erased spring 2019)
ETA 8/02: Martina Jackson (2022 or 2023)
Then there’s the question of if you count Ava (and different iterations?) and Gideon. Regardless, Rip and Miranda likely count, and Jonas definitely does (he died in 2166 and couldn’t have been older than 10). In fact, Eobard was born c. 2151, before all his time travelling, so he and Jonas are not far apart birth-wise (crack theory where Booster--> Rip--> Jonas, who Savage actually made Eobard; or, Eobard knew the Hunter-Coburns before things went to shit, and that’s how he got Rip’s time sphere). Cassandra Savage was probably born in after the early 2140s, given that she looks to be at least in her mid-20s in 2166, though it is unknown whether her timeline still exists. Querl is from the 31st century of E-38, and so presumably are Imra and Nura.
Also, a note that Maisie was born in 1992, but Amaya was born in the 1920s at latest, and Charlie’s ancient. This also extends to a couple other younger characters (Courtney especially) from the past, so they weren’t included above.
some edits have been made since this was first posted

The Best New Shows and Movies on Netflix This Week -- The Society, Wine Country
Looking for something new to watch on Netflix? Here is a list of all the best new shows and movies released on Netflix the week of May 10-May 16.
This is a very well-rounded week on Netflix. We've got a star-studded comedy movie (Wine Country), a suspenseful teen thriller series (The Society), the final season of a well-liked anthology series (Easy), some anime, some kid stuff, some foreign cinema, and some documentaries, and not too much of any one thing. Sometimes it's like "why do we need three murder documentaries this week," you know? Nothing this week is going to be a big hit, except mayyybe The Society, but nothing is especially bad, which isn't always the case. Steady as she goes, Netflix!
If you're looking for even more hand-picked recommendations, click over to our Watch This Now! page.
(All titles are out Friday, May 10, unless otherwise specified.)
The Biggest Releases
The Society, Season 1 Netflix's latest TV-MA YA offering is its best one yet, an inspired Lord of the Flies riff about the teenagers of a wealthy New England town that gets mysteriously cut off from the world. "No parents, no school, no rules" sounds like fun, right? Think again! Things Chinua Achebe real fast — and that's the kind of reference these kids would make, because they're all hilariously well-read. This is a show where ominous graffiti in Romanized Hebrew appears on a wall and a jock is like, "Oh, that's from the Book of Daniel. It means you've been judged and found wanting." It's a lot of fun.
Wine Country Amy Poehler is making her directorial debut with this feel-good comedy about a group of longtime friends taking a trip to Napa to celebrate a 50th birthday. The cast includes Poehler's own longtime friends and fellow Saturday Night Live alumni Maya Rudolph, Rachel Dratch, Ana Gasteyer, Paula Pell, Emily Spivey, and Tina Fey. In addition to directing, Poehler also stars, executive-produces, and wrote the story with Spivey and Liz Cackowski (who used to write for, you guessed it, Saturday Night Live). (Trailer)
Everything Else
Easy, Season 3 Writer-director Joe Swanberg's low-key anthology series is back for a third and final season of charming little tales of the love, sex, and app lives of a gaggle of Chicagoans. Returning faves include Jake Johnson, Aya Cash, Dave Franco, Zazie Beetz, Marc Maron, and Elizabeth Reaser, along with new faces like Sophia Bush and John Gallagher Jr. Is this the final sigh of mumblecore? Maybe!
Dry Martina I feel like this came out already? Or maybe Netflix puts out so many similar movies that I can't keep track of them all. Anyway, this is a sexy Chilean dramedy about a former teen pop star rediscovering her libido and finding out about who she is in the process. Lots of talk about "concha" in the trailer. (Trailer)
Gente que viene y bah (In Family I Trust) This is a Spanish movie about an architect whose boyfriend cheats on her with a news anchor and everyone finds out so she returns to the small town where she's from and gets her groove back with the help of her family and the local hot dude. You've seen this one before. (Trailer)
Harvey Girls Forever!, Season 2 The animated series formerly known as Harvey Street Kids is back for another season of after-school adventures on the street where every day feels like Saturday. Fun fact: The voices of the boy band the girls adore belong to Joey McIntyre (New Kids on the Block), Nick Lachey (98 Degrees), Joey Fatone (*NSYNC), and Shawn Stockman (Boyz II Men). That's star power! (Trailer)
Jailbirds People sure do love jail documentaries. Here's another one, profiling the women incarcerated in the Sacramento County Jail. It's as close to a real-life Orange Is the New Black as Netflix has gotten. (Trailer)
ReMastered: The Lion's Share The eighth and final installment of this season of monthly music documentary series ReMastered follows South African journalist Rian Malan's quest to redistribute the wealth of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," which has earned millions of dollars for American artists but nothing for the impoverished family of songwriter Solomon Linda, an injustice which Malan sets out to rectify as an act of personal contrition for his own family's role in apartheid. (Trailer)
Shéhérazade This gritty French indie is set in the slums of Marseille, where teenage petty crook Zach falls in love with streetwalker Shéhérazade, which leads to serious consequences. It won three César Awards (the French Oscars), for Best First Film for director Jean-Bernard Marlin and Best New Actor and Actress for its young stars Dylan Richard and Kenza Fortas. (Trailer)
Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj, Volume 3 Hasan Minhaj is back for another batch of informative John Oliver-style political comedy. Topics in this volume include censorship in China (which comes after Minhaj was banned in Saudi Arabia), politics in India, and the Department of Housing and Urban Development and its loony leader Ben Carson. (Trailer / Sunday, May 12)
Malibu Rescue The premise of this kids' movie is Baby Baywatch. Some kids including Breanna Yde and Ricardo Hurtado from Nick's School of Rock learn how to be junior lifeguards. If this were a theatrically released movie, it would be rated PG for "mild rude humor." (Trailer / Monday, May 13)
revisions, Season 1 This anime series has a pretty similar premise to The Society in some ways. It follows some teenagers from Shibuya who get time-warped into a future version of their city. But then there's big robots and stuff they have to fight, so it's actually pretty different than The Society. You should just watch The Society. (Trailer / Tuesday, May 14)
Still Laugh-In: The Stars Celebrate This special is a tribute to the classic Nixon-era sketch comedy show Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In. Dan Rowan and Dick Martin are both dead, so they won't be there to accept the praises. There doesn't seem to be much of a point to this besides the fact that it launched the career of Lily Tomlin, and Netflix loves Lily Tomlin. It also launched the career of Goldie Hawn, but she's not in this. But it does have Tiffany Haddish crip-walking, which is something we all know and love from the original Laugh-In! (Trailer)
Stop searching, start watching! TV Guide's Watch This Now! page has even more TV recommendations.

Germany run over Montenegro to kick off Euro 2021 Qualifying
Germany scored five goals in each half to easily beat Montenegro 10-0 on Saturday. The match was their first in qualifying for Euro 2021. Alexandra Popp had a first half hat trick to lead the Germans to a big victory.
Martina Voss-Tecklenburg gave young striker Klara Buhl a start up top in this one. The 18 year old did not disappoint, picking up two goals of her own, one in each half. However, it was Svenja Huth that got the scoring started on the day for the Germans, as she poked one home after just three minutes. The other goals were scored by Sara Doorsoun, Turid Knaak, Lea Schuller, and Linda Dallmann.
Of worry for Bayern will be the status of Carolin Simon. The defender is being sent back to Munich due to severe stomach problems, so the club can assess her status.
Germany’s next match in Qualifying will be Tuesday, September 3 against Ukraine. Due to UEFA’s unfortunate use of five-team groups, this was the only group match played today.
Germany XI: Frohms — Knaak, Oberdorf, Doorsoun, Gwinn (Rauch 61) — Magull, Dabritz (Dallmann 53), Huth, Marozsan, Popp (Schuller (53) — Buhl

When does old age begin? (Part 1 of Your Brain at 100 series)
This is part 1 of a series examing lessons in brain health learned from our elders — those folk who lived the longest and healthiest.
We’ve living longer, but how do our aging brains fare?
To answer this question, I’ve looked to two sources — those exceptionally old folks who remain in robust physical and mental health till the very end of their lives, and our evolutionary past.
Over millennia, Mother Nature equipped us to survive and thrive in the wild. Our brains evolved such that from womb to the tomb we’re required to move, eat well, sleep, immerse ourselves in nature, avoid stress, love and befriend, and seek meaning. These requirements neatly map onto the principles of everyday life followed by the world’s longest living people.
    When does old age begin?
We can’t seem to make up our minds, and the older we get, the further we move the goalposts marking the last season of our lives.
A 2009 survey of Americans asked participants when they believed someone grew ‘old’.
Young folks in their twenties believed said old age began at 60. Those under 50 put the threshold closer to 70, whereas those 65 and above said that the average person does not become old until turning 74.
Getting old wasn’t nearly as bad as people think it will be. Nor was it quite as good.
On the downside, one in four adults ages 65 surveyed reported memory loss. One in five had a serious illness, are no longer sexually active, or often feel sad or depressed, lonely or have trouble paying bills. One in ten felt like a burden.
On the upside, the same group said they have more time for hobbies, travel, volunteer work, and more financial security. Of all the good things about getting old, the best by far, according to older adults, is being able to spend more time with family members.
“Am I Old? Certainly not!”
One of my boys said to me recently he couldn’t imagine me as a little girl and how did it feel to finally be “old”. I told him I feel the same now as I did when I was 10.
“Am I Old? Certainly not!” This was the answer survey respondents gave too.
In fact, the older they got, the younger they said they feel. About half of those under 30 said they felt their age. But those who were 75 and older? Just 35% say they feel “old”.
It seems we remain on intimate terms with our much younger selves — I sometimes wonder how ten-year old me suddenly became forty-three?
We enter the end of our lifespan with our past woven intimately into our biology.
From birth, our neural architecture is shaped by life’s ups and downs, the decisions we made, the places where we lived, worked and learned, the meaning we’ve derived, and who we loved, gave life to, and travelled with through time. How we spend our early years will determine how we age.
More and more of us are living to into old age, and there has never been a better time in which to do so. Our large clever human brains have bequeathed us with modern medicine and tools with which we manage our reproductive health, avoid maternal and neonatal death, vaccinate against disease, prevent pain, treat infection and some cancers, and perform surgery if required.
One hundred years ago, women lived barely long enough to see out their 50s. A baby girl born today can expect to live to see out the first decades of the 22nd century.
Uncovering the secrets of exceptional longevity
On February 21, 1875, one year before the Alexander Graham Bell filed his patent for the telephone, a baby girl, Jeanne Louise Calment was born in Arles, France. She was alive to witness the invention of the aeroplane, cinema, and on a trip to Paris saw the Eiffel tower being built. When she was 13, Jeanne met Vincent Van Gogh; although apparently, she was less than impressed saying he was ”…very ugly, ungracious, impolite, sick…”.
In 1997, the same year Princess Diana died, Calment finally passed away. She was 122 years and 164 days old. Although blind, almost deaf, and confined to a wheelchair, Calment reportedly remained spirited and “alert as a hummingbird” till the end. The French called her “la doyenne de l’humanitè” (the elder of humankind) and she still holds the record for the world’s longest ever living human (although this has been recently challenged).
In April 2017, the latest longevity record holder, Emma Martina Luigia Morano of Vercelli, Italy, died aged 117. Born in November 1899, Morano was the last known living person who was born in the 1800s. According to the Guinness Book of Records, Morano followed the same extraordinary diet for around 90 years: three eggs per day (two raw, one cooked), fresh Italian pasta, and a dish of raw meat. The current longevity crown belongs to Polish Holocaust survivor Israel Kristal, who celebrated his 113th birthday in September 2017.
Once rare as diamonds, the oldest of the old are the fastest growing sector of our global population.
If you were born in 1900, the odds of living till age 100 were less than 1 in a million, and few people lived long enough see out the 1950s. For girls born into wealthy countries today, the odds of blowing out 100 candles on a cake are roughly 1 in 50.
Israel Kristal claims he doesn’t know the secret of his long life.
I believe that everything is determined from above and we shall never know the reasons why. There have been smarter, stronger and better-looking men then me who are no longer alive. All that is left for us to do is to keep on working as hard as we can and rebuild what is lost.
When asked her secrets, Jeanne Calment attributed her longevity to immunity to stress and a good attitude,
I wasn’t afraid of anything. I was often reproached for that … I took pleasure when I could, I acted clearly and morally and without regret. I’m very lucky.
Calment reportedly ate more than two pounds of chocolate a week, treated her skin with olive oil, rode a bicycle until she was 100, and only quit smoking when she was 117 because she became too proud to ask someone else to light her cigarettes. Known for her wit, she is widely reported as saying,
I’ve never had but one wrinkle, and I’m sitting on it.
Hard work, raw eggs, biking, and no regrets. We clamour to learn their secrets, and typically the oldest of the old love to share their long-won wisdom. Calment once quipped.
I wait. For death and journalists.
Blue Zones lessons for longevity
In another longevity project, National Geographic writer Dan Buettner together Professor Michel Poulain famously described five ‘Blue Zones’ around the globe where the residents live to exceptional old age. Despite being very different parts of the world, there are commonalities to the resident’s lifestyles.
Their longevity has nothing to do with brute discipline, diets, exercise programs or supplements… In Blue Zones areas around the world, longevity happens to people. It’s the result of the right environment that constantly nudges them into moving more, eating more plants and beans while eating less meat and sugar, socializing with the right people and living out their values. It’s that simple, really.
Residents of the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica, prioritise friendship and family, and they almost never work extra hours if it means they have to forego a good party. They also foster ‘plan de vida’ or ‘a reason to live’.
In Loma Linda, California, the strong sense of purpose, day of rest, no-smoking policy, and healthy diet practices of the local Seventh Day Adventist community has rubbed off on the health of the whole town.
Residents of the mountainous villages of Sardinia, Italy and the Greek island of Ikaria, nap, fast, grow their own food, and drink wine daily with friends. It’s thought the clean air, warm breezes and rugged terrain of the Mediterranean islands draw locals outdoors to move naturally.
The residents of the Japanese islands of Okinawa, home to the world’s longest living women, are dedicated to family. Okinawans practice ‘Hara hachi bu’, a reminder to stop eating when they’re 80% full, ‘Ikigai’, which roughly translates to “Why I wake up in the morning,” and form ‘Moais’, groups of five friends that remain committed to each other for live.
Buettner has distilled the lifestyle practices of Blue Zones into lessons for longevity. As he says, to make it to 100 you may have to “win the genetic lottery”, but the average person’s life expectancy can be increased by moving move, prioritising friends, family and social gatherings, eating less, drinking wine, and fostering a sense of purpose.
Sydney Centenarian Study lessons for longevity
Due to the rarity of extremely old folks, the Sydney Centenarian Study has partnered with a consortium of centenarian research teams from around the globe to pool their resources and data to enable more powerful conclusions to be drawn. Their data support the Blue Zones observations.
Charlene Levitan, who once headed up the Sydney Centenarian Study says,
What is emerging from the global research is that around 30% of longevity is contributed by genetics. The remaining 70% is to do with our lifestyle, which includes a healthy diet, exercise, and remaining socially integrated.
One of the strongest themes to emerge is related to the personality traits of resilience, adaptability and optimism.
Most of our centenarians will report optimism as a life-long personality characteristic.

  Défilé, photo by Marcello Chiappalone
The Ballet School of La Scala’s Academy have just finished a short run of their “end of year” show. For many, it will be their last appearance as students.
An effective défilé by the school (and La Scala Ballet Company) director Frédéric Olivieri set to the march from Tannhäuser was followed by Roland Petit’s Gymnopédie. The piece is extracted from his 1986 work Ma Pavlova, and Erik Satie’s music does much of the work as with such a winning, seductive, and short score, it would be difficult to go wildly wrong. However here, Petit is at his best and the piece was beautifully performed by Samuele Gamba in the first Gymnopédie, and then the secure, eloquent Daniele Bonelli took over and shared the stage with the elegant and alluring Letizia Masini, a ballerina who was outstanding in Nutcracker last December.

Angelin Preljocaj’s La Stravaganza is an odd choice for a group of teenage dancers, but never underestimate the ability of young people to tap into something deeper when challenged to do so, and young dancers are a special category with already a lifetime of discipline to enable them to graduate from an academy such as La Scala’s.
La Stravaganza sees six pairs of dancers divided into two groups. The first are dressed simply in cream-coloured dresses or trousers and dance in Neo-Classical style to Vivaldi. The second group wear Vermeer inspired costumes, masking any classical lines, yet they are accompanied by electronic music, and occasionally they move in silence. While there is no story as such, Preljocaj’s general idea is that of immigration and the contrast of cultures. Preljocaj is the son of immigrants from modern-day Montenegro who settled in France, where he was born. He created the piece was created for New York City Ballet in 1997.
As the contrasting groups come together there is mutual curiosity with an exchange of techniques and musical styles, and the maturity of La Scala’s students as they explore the others, and in doing so, themselves, was commendable. It is the sort of intimate eye contact and touching that would have your average adolescent giggling and blushing.

As an intercultural romance blooms between two of the dancers, the man (Tommaso Calcia) removes his restricting 17th century jacket, enabling him to move as one with the woman (Linda Giubelli). The metaphors are many. It is a duet danced with tenderness — both Calcia and Giubelli are committed interpreters and fine dancers — but as the man returns toward his group a backcloth comes down between him and them (he chooses to not return, or they decide to exclude him?); and as she returns to her group they seem not to allow her back in (or does she choose to remain outside?) The couple have contaminated themselves by their newfound knowledge, or they are now contaminated in the eyes of others?
Maurice Béjart’s Gaîté Parisienne closes the programme. The school last presented the piece in 2013 when a young Angelo Greco played Bim (Béjart himself) with Jacopo Tissi, Martina Arduino and Mattia Semperboni among the cast. Greco is now a Principal Dancer at San Francisco Ballet, Tissi is First Soloist at the Bolshoi, Arduino has just been nominated Principal at La Scala, and Semperboni is currently making waves at La Scala with his star turn as Ali the slave in Le Corsaire.
Alessandro Paoloni as Bim in Gaîté Parisienne suite, Maurice Bejart, photo by Giulia Guccione
There is no shortage of new talent in the current outing however. Alessandro Paoloni played Bim, the central character. It’s a firecracker of a role, requiring the interpreter to be virtuosic and ooze personality, and Paoloni ticked all the right boxes.
Bim, the young Béjart, is surrounded by real situations and people (the Paris Opera, Madame Rousanne, his dancing teacher) as well as influencers and heroes (Offenbach, Ludwig II of Bavaria). It’s quite a hotchpotch, with ballet parodies — a leopard-skin cavalier and a ballerina crowned with a gigantic feather — and ballet references, like Madame Rousanne being Carabosse and Bim’s six friends as the fairies bearing gifts, each with a short variation. In short, there are plenty of characters to satisfy the demands of a ballet school show.
Béjart said that Offenbach “enchanted” his youth. Répétition au violon was one of his first choreographies and used Offenbach’s music. At 22, he danced Massine’s choreography of Gaîté Parisienne in London, and his first experience directing an opera was The Tales of Hoffmann.
Alessandro Cavallo showed off his technical wizardry playing Offenbach which was both impressive and comic. Giacomo Migliavacca stood out as one of Bim’s six friends as he turned and turned… and turned! He should however tone down his grin, which can appear fixed.

Letizia Masini shone in the pas de deux of the two lovers, ably partnered by the broad-shouldered Riccardo Luli.
Camilla Cerulli, an excellent Sugar Plum Fairy last year, was ‘the young girl in white’ and she hopped and skipped her way through the role with gusto and freshness. She is a dancer who is already strikingly assured and excites with her technical ease.
Some will enter La Scala’s corps, many will leave the country to be able to continue dancing, but it remains that Italy has dance in its DNA.

Emerging talent at La Scala excel in Petit, Béjart and Preljocaj The Ballet School of La Scala’s Academy have just finished a short run of their “end of year” show.

Mother-Son Dance Songs

Mother-Son Dance Songs
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Every mother looks forward to taking a solo spin on the dance floor with her son at his wedding. It’ll likely be the only time all day that she’ll have him all to herself for roughly three whole minutes, so it’s important to pick a song that’s both appropriate and worthy of the moment. It may be bittersweet for her, or she may be celebrating more than anyone.
Some people also choose to combine the Father-Daughter and Mother-Son dances into one event. In that situation, look for a song that’s on this list as well as the Father-Daughter songs page of our website. There is some crossover, but not every song on this list will apply.
It’s important to keep in mind that song titles don’t tell the whole story – be sure to listen to ALL of the lyrics to a song prior to approving it for your Father-Daughter or Mother-Son dance. There are several songs that seem appropriate on the surface, but may not work for a dance with your parent(s).
Here are some suitable Mother-Son song suggestions:

Anyway – Martina McBride
Beautiful In My Eyes – Joshua Kadison
Because You Loved Me – Celine Dion

China Says North Korea Tension Has To Be Stopped From Reaching 'Irreversible' Stage
BEIJING/PYONGYANG, April 14 (Reuters) - China said on Friday tension over North Korea had to be stopped from reaching an “irreversible and unmanageable stage” as a U.S. aircraft carrier group steamed towards the region amid fears the North may conduct a sixth nuclear weapons test.
Concern has grown since the U.S. Navy fired 59 Tomahawk missiles at a Syrian airfield last week in response to a deadly gas attack, raising questions about U.S. President Donald Trump’s plans for North Korea, which has conducted missile and nuclear tests in defiance of U.N. and unilateral sanctions.
The United States has warned that a policy of “strategic patience” is over. U.S. Vice President Mike Pence travels to South Korea on Sunday on a long-planned 10-day trip to Asia.
China, North Korea’s sole major ally and neighbor which nevertheless opposes its weapons program, has called for talks leading to the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula.
“We call on all parties to refrain from provoking and threatening each other, whether in words or actions, and not let the situation get to an irreversible and unmanageable stage,” Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told reporters in Beijing.
U.S. ally South Korea warned against any North Korean “provocation.”
“If North Korea conducts a strategic provocation such as a nuclear test or an intercontinental ballistic missile launch, there is certain to be powerful punitive measure that will be difficult for the North Korean regime to endure,” the South’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
North Korea for its part denounced the United States for bringing “huge nuclear strategic assets” to the region as the nuclear-powered USS Carl Vinson strike group steamed closer.
A spokesman for the North Korean Foreign Ministry’s Institute for Disarmament and Peace issued a statement condemning the United States for its attack on the Syrian airfield.
“The U.S. introduces into the Korean peninsula, the world’s biggest hot spot, huge nuclear strategic assets, seriously threatening peace and security of the peninsula and pushing the situation there to the brink of a war,” the North’s KCNA news agency said on Friday, citing the statement.
“This has created a dangerous situation in which a thermo-nuclear war may break out any moment.”
North Korea, still technically at war with the South after their 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce, not a treaty, has on occasion conducted missile or nuclear tests to coincide with big political events and often threatens the United States, South Korea and Japan.
On Saturday, it marks the “Day of the Sun,” the 105th anniversary of the birth of state founder Kim Il Sung.
WITH OR WITHOUT YOU
While Trump has put North Korea on notice that he will not tolerate any more provocation, U.S. officials have said his administration is focusing its strategy on tougher economic sanctions.
Trump said on Thursday North Korea was a problem that “will be taken care of” and he believed Chinese President Xi Jinping would “work very hard” to help resolve it.
Trump has also said the United States is prepared to tackle the crisis without China, if necessary.
He diverted the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier and its strike group towards the Korean peninsula last weekend in a show of force.
Worry about North Korean aggression has also led to a deterioration of ties between China and South Korea because China objects to the deployment of a U.S. Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-missile system in the South.
“It’s not hard to see that ever since the United States and Republic of Korea decided to deploy THAAD, the situation has not become harmonious but has become more tense,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang, said in response to a question about the system.
South Korea and the United States say the sole purpose of the THAAD is to guard against North Korean missiles, but China says that its powerful radar could penetrate its territory.
The dollar fell on Friday against a basket of currencies, on track for a losing week as tension over North Korea underpinned the perceived safe-haven Japanese yen.
Japan’s Nikkei business daily said the government had discussed how to rescue an estimated 57,000 Japanese citizens in South Korea as well as how to cope with a possible flood of North Korean refugees coming to Japan, among whom might be spies.
In Pyongyang, retired soldier Ho Song Chol told Reuters that North Korea would win should there be any conflict with the United States.
“We don’t think about other things, we just live in our belief that we will win as long as our Supreme Leader is with us,” Ho said, referring to Kim Jong Un.
Kang Gil-won, a 26-year-old graduate living in Seoul, said his biggest concern was not North Korea, but finding work in a tough job market.
“There’s no concern that war is going to break out tomorrow,” he told Reuters at a “study café” where many young job seekers prepare for interviews.
“Getting a job is a war that I feel in my bones.”
Many South Koreans, meanwhile, marked “Black Day” on Friday, but it had nothing to do with worry about North Korea.
Black Day is a day for singles, marked by eating “jajangmyeon,” a noodle dish topped with a thick sauce made of black beans. It’s celebrated by singles as a response to “White Day,” an Asian Valentine’s Day which falls a month earlier, on March 14.
