Limacia cockerelli is a dorid nudibranch that grows to be about 2.5cm long and lives in intertidal and subtidal areas from Alaska to Mexico. Though the long papillae are similar to the cerata in aeolid nudibranchs, this species still has a tuft of gills on its back (not visible in the photo), characteristic of dorids.

So how DO you find nudibranchs in the wild—especially the teeny tinys? Search for slug suppers!
Many nudies are extremely food-specific—find their meal, and they’re likely to be queued up. Nudibranchs will often lay their eggs in and around their preferred meals. So if you find a sluggy omelette around the diner, you’re nearing a nudist colony!

2️⃣📷: Limacia cockerelli munching on bryozoans—the carpet of brown/green on the right of the image. These colorful slugs are surprisingly easy to miss in Monterey Bay, as the rocks are often pink, orange and red from anemones and algae. Spotted by Phil Lemley.

Limacia cockerelli
This showy creature is the nudibranch Limacia cockerelli (Nudibranchia - Polyceridae), an attractive species with long tubercles down the middle of the dorsum, tipped with orange or red. It is usually 12 to 30 mm long; its body is white to yellowish, and the rhinophores (specialized sensory organs on the dorsal surface of the head) are also red or orange.
This species has defensive glands with huge vacuoles, similar to dermal formations located in the rim of the dorsal surface.
Limacia cockerelli occurs in the eastern Pacific, from Vancouver Island (British Columbia, Canada) to Bahia de Los Angeles (Baja California, Mexico).

The Cockerell's dorid (Limacia cockerelli) wears the cloak of its innumerable victims—orange carpets of minuscule bryozoans are rasped from their homes by a dagger tongue, and their colors adorn the slug's rhinophores and cerata as testaments to a terrifying taste test!

Yeah, it's orange! Because Limacia cockerelli exists, it's orange-tipped glory should be celebrated!! 🍊 #yarn #yarnporn #yarnstash #yarnaddict #yarnstagram #knit #knitting #knitter #knittersofinstagram #instaknit #knitspiration #knitting_inspiration #knitstagram #mothyandthesquid #etsy #ravelry #sockyarn #sockknitting #operationsockdrawer #knitallthethings #knittersoftheworld #crochet #strikk #indieuntangled #glasgowetsy #indieyarn #miniskeins #britishwoolshow #perthyarnfest #knitandstitchrheged (at Mothy and the Squid)

All aboard the slug bus! This little kelp crawler is a Cockerell’s dorid nudibranch sea slug—and tucked away in the slug’s bulby branches is a red commensal scale worm along for the ride!
Cockerell’s dorids (Limacia cockerelli) feed on carpets of small animals known as bryozoans—their orange color derives from pigments in their food. Red commensal scale worms (Arctonoe pulchra) are avid hitchhikers that use sea stars, snails and slugs as convenient craft services to their next feeding ground.
The worms don’t bother the slugs, save for occasional pokes of the slugs’s gills that send the nudibranch into ticklish winces. The slug here is about an inch / three cm long, and the buddy pair was spotted just off the back deck of the Aquarium!
