“What do you think, should we do a more gold and silver thing for decorations or more a red and green?” Lily asked, rummaging through a nearby box. She’d decided that since it was usually the First Lady’s job to do the holiday decor, it would be her and her sister’s job instead.

A small smile formed as Lily gave a nod. “Okay.” It would be better than nothing. She didn't know if Addie would agree, but she was working the lights.

“audrey will livestream it.” she reaches out a hand, placing it on her daughters shoulder. “and I will be watching the livestream. I promise. When you get back, we’ll have all the ice cream in the world.”

“Are you sure?” Lily asks. “I’m not going to keep you up, am I?” There had been plenty of times she couldn’t sleep and there had been plenty of times she didn’t want to keep anyone else up. Even if someone’s already awake, she doesn’t need to keep them up longer than they have to be. Least of all, she doesn’t need to talk about what it is keeping her awake.

The concept of Thanksgiving was somehow the same yet completely different in the White House. On one hand, there was the public show of Thanksgiving and the constant surveillance, as well as Tamsin. On the other, the point was much the same: a big turkey dinner, pumpkin pie, potatoes, etc. It was strange how that paradox felt.

“Can you pass some more pie?” Lily asked, looking down the table.

she unwraps the box, picking out one of the scarves. “these are great, thank you.” she wraps it around her neck.

“You didn’t need to do that, we didn’t get you anything.” Lily looked at the box, gently taking it.

“you didn’t have to.” it’s two crocheted scarves. it was something she had worked on in what little free time she had to herself.

“Can we go out? I saw an ornament in a store last week that I loved.” It wasn’t anything too fancy, just a simple Nutcracker themed one, but it was painted in a way that she couldn’t help but love.

"It can be any kind of ornament. You can pick whatever you like. It's a yearly tradition." She had found her own ornaments in her parents house. There'd only been seven of them in her box.

“Is there a specific kind of ornament we get or just any kind of ornament?” Lily continued digging through the box, removing red and green ornaments to decorate the trees.

"gold and silver in the living areas. red and green on the trees." She says absentmindedly, digging through her box of personal decorations. there's a few ornaments she'd found while going through her parent's old house which had been sitting vacant for years. "We'll have to get you two your first ornaments here. Family tradition."

“No, it’s okay.” Though she still couldn’t help but wish that she could come to the performance at least a little. It would be nice to have someone come to the show to see her, specifically. “We’ll do something else together another time.”

“Really, it’s fine, we’re not used to people coming to see us.” Lily offers a half hearted smile.

“I talked with the Secret Service about coming to your school event.” there’s a pause. “they said it was too dangerous.’

“You didn’t need to do that, we didn’t get you anything.” Lily looked at the box, gently taking it.

“I got you a present.” she outstretches the wrapped box towards the other.
