Considering they position themselves as the guardians of Britishness, it has been so weird seeing conservatives here in the U.K. adopting the US’s anti-drag narrative, especially the idea drag is inappropriate for kids. Like, this is something every british child went to see as a school trip each Christmas:

And these are considered our best TV shows/TV stars, who I watched all the time as a child in the 90s:

You were the dazzling Lily Savage.
You were a husband, a father and a grandfather.
You had the purest love for your dogs.
And you were an inspiration for a generation of baby gays across the world.
RIP Paul O'Grady.
Sleep well.

RIP Paul O'Grady
It's heart-breaking. I grew up watching this man take cracks at our shitty right-wing governments, treat dogs and humans alike with so much kindness, and make British drag something to be proud of.
He was a really special man, and he did so much for the Queer community in Britain, and so much for all the people whose lives he touched.
My thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends.
Give 'em hell, Lil.

Paul O'Grady as Lily Savage as the Doctor
The late, great O'Grady on The Lily Savage Show in 1997, sharing an adventure with companion Gayle Tuesday (no relation to Ruby Sunday, so far as we know). In this adventure, the Doctor and Gayle visited the twin planets of Gonad.
Not pictured: their robot dog K-Y.

Every day I think about the fact that if my mum had been a little cooler she would have given me a different flower name and I could have been Lily Savage. I could have Slayed.

Non royal related but RIP Barry Humphries
Yeah, I don't want to make it a Thing because people died. But it's been weird seeing Paul O'Grady and Barry Humphries dying so close together and the right wing press like the Daily Mail mourn the loss when they've spent the last few months (not very successfully) trying to push the US's anti-drag narrative here. Especially the idea drag is dangerous to children. Drag - and drag aimed specifically at children - is a completely normal, integral part of British culture and always has been. I grew up watching Dame Edna (who wasn't British but was huuuuge here) and Lily Savage on TV in the 90s and they brought together generations. They made my judgemental religious grandmother and my conservative grandfather laugh as much as they made me laugh. It's bonkers to see some wings of society mourn that loss and recognise the place of drag in the UK while simultaneously backing protestors who think drag queens shouldn't be allowed near kids.
