Shame would be my guess. Neither of them are particularly open about their treatment of Snape back in the day. When they do discuss it, they focus on justifying their actions. Snape was vicious too, Snape loved Dark magic, Snape was a bigot who became a Death Eater, etc.
Bringing up Lily's childhood friendship with Snape makes things more complicated and probably just wasn't something Sirius or Remus wanted to get into.
Additionally, Snape and Lily's friendship did not exactly end amicably. She cut ties with him because he was a bigot getting increasingly involved with some very bad people. He went on to become a part of a group that advocated for genocide of people like Lily.
It's a very heavy, complicated conversation to have with a 15 year old. Especially considering of the two people actually involved, one isn't around to talk about it and the other has zero desire to. It probably didn't seem worth dragging up, given the friendship had been very over 6 years prior to Lily's death.
Now that I’m thinking of it, how was it never mentioned to Harry by Sirius or Remus that Snape and Lily were friends??? I mean with how much attention James spent on Lily and Sirius spent on Snape there was no way they didn’t know they were close friends. So either they weren’t as close as Snape thought they were, they weren’t friendly in public (lily with shame from snape, snape with shame from lily being a muggleborn, or slytheirn vs gryffindor issues) or they deliberately kept this fact from Harry.
#the only thing mentioning it would accomplish is making every single one of them look much worse#snape for siding with the folks who wanted his childhood friend dead#james for tormenting snape out of petty jealousy over his friendship with lily#lily for staying friends with someone she knew was shady and prejudiced against people like her#and only cutting him off when his hatred was directed at her#or lily for marrying the guy who tormented her childhood friend#just look at how much fandom struggles with the decisions these characters made#and think about how hard that all would be for harry to grapple with#he manages to deal pretty well once he does find out the whole story#but that's after snape's friendship for lily ends up being the saving grace#imagine him going out of hbp knowing snape and his mother were besties once#as for why other ppl like dumbledore or mcgonagall don't mention it - snape does not want to talk about it#snape's spent 20 years not wanting to talk about it#for emotional reasons as well as Very Important Spy Reasons#lily likely spent the last 6 years of her life not wanting to talk about it#her friend ended up on the opposite side of a brutal war#she probably wanted to forget she was ever friend with her#so anybody who had the least bit of respect for either snape or lily wouldn't bring it up to her son#neither of them wanted anybody to know about it and there'd be basically zero benefit to telling harry#like from a storytelling perspective i think it's weak writing that the snily friendship was never so much as hinted at prior to dh#but realistically? i wouldn't tell harry about it either#hp meta#hp#sirius black#remus lupin#severus snape#lily evans
