The Gap in the Evening, Entry 17: “Frozen Heart Mender”

Everyone always calls winter the season of death because that’s when trees lose all their leaves and plants shrivel up and die. Animals hibernate for the winter or brave the cold weather to survive. But one thing that nobody mentions is what happens when someone emotionally freezes up. That’s what Koakuma talked about when she talked about someone giving her the cold shoulder. And unfortunately, it’s ridiculously easy for anyone to freeze another person’s heart, even in today’s society and especially on the World Wide Web. You get unfollowed and ghosted on social media by a once-close mutual and nobody can deduce why they did it. Your crush dumps you seconds before you would be married as they walk away and leave spectators stunned. Best friends smother your ego into the dirt and leave it in pieces. One’s ego can be compared to something like ancient pottery. The value is priceless, yet the object is easy to shatter. Once it’s broken, it’s near-impossible to put everything back together again.

That’s when we were approached by a fairy dressed in black. She introduced herself as Lily Black as she let Koakuma cry a bit into her shoulder. Someone, Lily said, was going to have a bad time. But for the moment being, Lily was her shoulder to cry on. A means to an extent to reassemble what was broken. And while I cannot say who chose to be mean to Koakuma this time, the tone Lily Black had meant business. She was going to shatter her winter and find the one who did this to her. But until then, Lily told me and Reimu to be her shoulder until she feels ready to confront her feelings herself. Another incident to resolve whilst we find a way to reach the Parallel Satellite…

Age: Only The Yama Knows.

Personality: Unlike Lily White, Lily Black fulfills their shared duty with conviction over cheer. It’s as if she despises the very notion of winter itself, and those that dare to mimic it in their way of life and manner of socialization. She sympathizes with frozen souls as she tries to thaw them, and often acts out violently against those who she *thinks* froze them. Surrounded by warm hearts, however, her true feelings of happiness come into full bloom and bring joy to those around her.

Occupations: Herald of Spring, Yama’s Stand-in Assistant

Home Region: Anywhere & Everywhere in Gensokyo, Ministry of Right and Wrong

Natural Affinity: Nature itself, becomes more attuned to Springtime

Ability: Capable of heralding spring

Herald: When spring comes (or is due to come), Lily flies across the land to herald its arrival, accelerating the growth and blooming of flowers while making the atmosphere briskly warm.

Capturing Essence: Unlike Lily White who spreads the warmth of spring, Lily Black heralds spring by exorcising winter and gathering its cold, life-inhibiting, harmful essence from the environment and the inhabitants that live within it. This leaves room for spring’s warmth to flow through and infuse new life into the world around her.

Heart Thawer: Lily Black knows a frozen heart and a frozen soul when she sees one. With her springtime magic and caring heart, Lily can thaw them out and return springtime to their soul. It varies dramatically whether this is a smooth and painless process, or if the process is excruciatingly painful.

Possessions:

Black Cap: A cone-shaped hat with a red wavy pattern along the folded brim. It was a gift from Eiki when the Hakurei Barrier was created.

Black Dress: A dress and accessorizing capelet done in a similar fashion as Lily White’s, but the main color is black. The design was provided by the Ministry of Right and Wrong when she first started associating with them.

Black Shoes: Shoes with a pink ribbon, done in a similar fashion as Lily White’s.

“Biscuit” of Remorse: A baked pastry that mimics the design of Eiki’s Rod of Remorse. While a prop at best, the charges read, “Frozen Heart.” It may be lightweight, but it’s usually stale enough to fulfill the role of the original Rod’s purpose… which is hitting people with it.

Muse-Specific Headcanons:

Lily Black is a separate fairy from Lily White, but because there isn’t much on her as Lily Black, she could be considered an original fairy built on the scarce base canon that exists of her

While they aren’t seemingly related, Lily Black thinks of Lily White as a sister she never had

In times of crises, Lily often tends to the Ministry of Right and Wrong as an assistant to Eiki, especially when Komachi sleeps

She knows about the Armored Fairy Brigade. She just doesn’t associate with them much unless they ask her…

The spread of spring from other universes that has come from the West Mountain has given her insights on new spell cards from someone who she can only imagine is “EX Lily White”

She’s recently taken up baking, a hobby she got from Lily White and other fairies around the Human Village. It allows her to make a new Biscuit of Remorse to fit the next “judgement” she has to deliver as if she was the Yama herself
