Black Is Beautiful!
A 4-year old was getting her hair done when she looked into the camera and said “I’m so ugly.” Heartbreaking! Kudos to this hairstylist for snapping into action and reminding her that she IS beautiful. Let’s remember to always speak life and self love into our young kings and queens. With all that they’re up against, they need it. It looks like her words of encouragement truly helped this young girl see her beauty and worth! 👏🏾 (🎥: @lilwavedaddy)

This viral video had me in tears. A little precious dark skinned black girl was looking at her reflection, called herself ugly and this Angel of a hair stylist quickly stopped what she was doing to shower the girl with love; she told her she was so pretty and to see that little girl's reaction made me so sad. Clearly, she's been subjected to featurism and colorism at her young age, believes she's ugly.
That breaks my heart. This is why representation matters, why I go so hard for diversity and why we need to uplift black girls everywhere because of this very reason right here. Especially dark skinned girls. Thank goodness for this sweet hair stylist, we need more gems like her in our world. Her Instagram name is: lilwavedaddy if anybody is interested in following her.

BEAUTIFUL! Michelle Obama, Viola Davis & More Speak Life Into 4-Year-Old Girl Who Called Herself Ugly
Tumblr media
Celebs are sending light and love to a 4-year-old who was captured on video calling herself ugly. See the heartbreaking video, plus how Michelle Obama, Viola Davis and more reacted inside…
Tumblr media
A video of a 4-year-old little girl calling herself “ugly” has gone viral and now celebs are sending her love and light online.
In the viral clip, 4-year-old Ariyonna is getting her hair done by Atlanta stylist Shabria and that’s when the little girl says “I’m so ugly.”
Stylist Shabria quickly shut that down and told her, Don’t say that!” as Ariyonna began to cry. “You are so pretty. You have the prettiest little dimples. You are too cute. You have this beautiful chocolate skin. You are just so gorgeous,” Shabria said to her. “Let me see you smile! You have two dimples!,” she continued.
It’s truly heartbreaking!

While doing her hair she had alllll the energy in the world then out of nowhere she stares at herself and gets soooo discouraged it broke my heart into pieces because she has the GREATEST energy and the most beautiful smile and heart ! She comes from a great home & loving mother . I just think when kids go to school they learn and pick up sooo much different things that they don’t know the definition but they know the feeling ! Keep her in your prayers and keep lifting up our future !!!

A whole movement has launched on social media. "Hair Love" director/co-producer Matthew Cherry (who won an Oscar this year for the animated short film) asked for artists to create artwork for Ariyonna using the hashtag #ArtworkForAriyonna:
Hey #ArtTwitter can we get a collection of drawings together of this sweet little girl who mistakenly called herself ugly like the one @LeislAdams did so we can get a collection of them to her and the hairdresser @LilWaveDaddy that encouraged her. Make sure to include the dimples https://t.co/PyG6wRpnrv

We love to see it! And it's this very reason - the lack of media and everyday examples of black people being told they're beautiful and fabulous - that TheYBF.com was born.

I love how the Black community has rallied to create artwork of Ariyonna, the little girl who told her hairdresser @LilWaveDaddy “I’m so ugly” in that heartbreaking IG Live video. It’s so beautiful to wake up on a Monday morning to all this love and the hashtag #ArtworkForAriyonna for this beautiful Black child. 💕 It’s also a reminder to give our children affirmations that they can carry with them so that they always know how gifted, talented, beautiful, blessed and truly awesome they really are. ♥️💜🖤💙💛🧡❤️🤎 #ArtworkForAriyonna (SWIPE LEFT) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9iwQ5Zg3vU/?igshid=fa6kzv3fidb2

I dunno from being a child once that we've all gone through being called ugly at one point in our life and being a woman of color it's hard to not take negative comments to heart of what people say to you from childhood and adulthood. My entire life I've always felt like I wasn't good enough or pretty enough and watching this video broke my whole heart. I am so glad that the young lady in this video encourage this little girl, this beautiful chocolate princess, this queen in the making because not only is it hard out there to be a woman of color, but it's even harder for a darker woman of color we're always told we have a bad attitude, it'll be pretty if we were light skinned, and the list goes on. 👸🏿👸🏾👸🏽🖤 @journeyb84 https://www.instagram.com/p/B9iZ-T1BPQ2/?igshid=ktau5jt8yxbq

😭🎨👏🏿🧡 #ArtIsAWeapon #ArtworkForAriyonna The response to this little girl is touching and powerful. Well done! Reposted from @matthewacherry Like many of you I was heartbroken when I saw the video of the little girl ... looking at herself on Facebook live and saying that she thought she was ugly. Thank God @lilwavedaddy was there to reassure her tell her how beautiful she and her dimples were. Racked my brain all night and morning trying to figure out what to do and this is what I came up with. Reached out to some of my friends on #ArtTwitter after seeing @leisladams drawing of her to send to the famlily and boy did they deliver. Images are powerful and we were able to get most of them in front of her and they really seemed to help. Turns out her name is Ariyonna so we came up with the #ArtworkForAriyonna hashtag to find the images. Thank you everyone for contributing and participating. ⬅️ Swipe ➡️ to see some of my favorite ones. Also @fiyawata is organizing a care package of different books, dolls and other items to send to the family so reach out for the addy to send stuff. THIS is why representation matters. Everyone deserves to see positive and uplifting representations of themselves when they grow up. Because we all deserve to see ourselves as beautiful, as divine, as worthy of love. And when we don't (or can't) because society won't let us, it becomes easier and easier to give up on ourselves. This is why black girl magic is important, why black boy joy is important, why children's books that celebrate dark skin and blackness and thick/nappy/curly hair are necessary. Reposted from @theshaderoom TSR Staff: Thembi! @ThembiTV_ _____________________________________ #TSRPositiveImages: A lot of people grow up with many insecurities that range from their physical likeness to everything in between. _____________________________________ A 4-year-old girl was getting her hair done on Instagram live and she looked into the camera and said "I'm so ugly". The heartbreaking moment resulted in a beautiful conversation her hairdresser followed up with. _____________________________________ She reassured our lil sis that she was beautiful, and encouraged her to start thinking that way of herself too. This is a teaching moment that reminds us to continue to build up our young kings and queens so that they can grow up with self love ❤️ 🎥: @lilwavedaddy https://www.instagram.com/p/B9cXXvgJXtn/?igshid=gqjbnf92wpgd
