In some cases, extraction of teeth may be necessary as part of orthodontic treatment. This may occur because of:

Sometimes when the baby tooth may have to be removed before the adult successor tooth is ready to follow, we use space maintainers to preserve the space for the adult tooth to prevent adjacent teeth from drifting in and closing the space

Everything will be done to save an adult tooth; it is rare to remove an adult tooth

How the direction the tooth has been pushed impacts on bite and chew function; whether other teeth are affected; and other impacts on facial bones and lacerations. X-rays will reveal the extent.

How is a child’s tooth extraction done?

Straightforward extractions can be done in our practice using local anaesthetic or happy gas for patient comfort and to allay the child’s fears. To ensure your denture fits well and lasts as long as possible, we highly encourage our clients to remove their prosthesis each night before going to bed.

Soak your appliance in an effervescent cleansing solution to loosen any buildup or food debris that may have accumulated throughout the day.

The next morning, use a denture brush or soft toothbrush to clean your appliance and rinse it well. Avoid harsh abrasives and chemicals, as they could permanently damage your custom appliance. To limit the risk of oral infection, use a soft washcloth or extra-soft toothbrush to thoroughly clean your gum tissues and the inside of your mouth at least twice per day.

What to do when you have a broken tooth or filling

A tooth that has been knocked out may be able to be reinserted if it has been handled properly – that is, picked up by the crown, rinsed gently, replaced into the socket and held in place, or placed in a small cup of milk or the patient’s saliva, and then getting to the dentist for treatment as soon as possible.

For a tooth pushed out of alignment the dentist may re-position and stabilise it.
