Work begins on Britain's first centre to the anti-apartheid movement
WORK on Britain’s first centre dedicated to the anti-apartheid movement is set to begin in London following a £1.2 million National Lottery Heritage Fund grant, a charity has announced.
As the Morning Star reported, the site of the former headquarters of the African National Congress (ANC) in Penton Street, Islington, will be restored to create the Anti-Apartheid Legacy Centre of Memory & Learning, social justice body the Liliesleaf Trust said.
Between 1978 and 1994, the building was a hub for coordinating international opposition to South African apartheid, a system of institutionalized racial segregation designed by the descendants of white settler populations.
The London site was home to ANC leaders Oliver Tambo and Thabo Mbeki, who eventually replaced Nelson Mandela as South African president in 1999 following the country’s transition to inclusive democracy.

and when she calls for justice - teaser (2023)
5-min dance film, a liliesleaf trust uk “anti-apartheid now” commission, in collaboration with tuesdae houston & francesca matthys
| watch the full film |
(a crossover between documentary film and dance film, this project interweaves 2 stories of collective struggles for black and coloured women of the south african diaspora in the uk across the last 50 years. reckoning with the provocation “all immigration detainees are political prisoners,” the film asks, in what ways does the legacy of the anti-apartheid movement in the uk continue today in the fight for migrant justice?)

Back to the history lesson... these are pictures from today’s visit to Liliesleaf Farm, the original underground headquarters for Umkhonto we Sizwe, aka “Spear of the Nation,” also known as the MK.
Now it’s a museum dedicated to the Umkhonto we Sizwe story, including the contextual backdrop of the Sharpeville Massacre of 1960 which pushed protesting organizations to embrace violent campaigns against the state.
The farm was surreptitiously purchased by the South African Communist Party in 1961 and served as a central meeting place for underground activities, as well as a safe house for leading liberation figures. The outward cover was a small working farm managed by the Goldreich family in the wealthy Johannesburg suburb of Rivonia. The Goldreiches managed this façade until June 1963, when the farm was raided during a MK meeting. Most major players in the liberation movement were arrested in the raid or shortly thereafter, most imprisoned for life in the Rivonia Trial (’63-’64). The raid was a major blow against the liberation movement, which didn’t quite recover until the 1976 Soweto student uprisings.
Mandela lived at the farm in 1961, pretending to be a houseboy and caretaker named “David Motsamayi.”
The question of who tipped the police off as to the nature of the farm remains a mystery.
As a museum, the farm is exhaustive, with tons of detail about liberation activity from 1948 to the present day. There’s a lot of original source material and audio and video recordings, not just big blown up posters (as at some other museums in the area). Many of the buildings on the farm were destroyed after the ‘63 raid, but the original foundations and structures have been rebuilt as they were at the time.
Picture 1) The main home
Picture 2) An original print of the Freedom Charter of 1955, signed by a handful of those who drafted it as part of the South African Congress Alliance.
Picture 3) The main dining room and site of many MK meetings.
Picture 4) The tiny room which Mandela lived in while resident - pretty sparse.
Picture 5) The smaller farm houses in the “back yard” which served as bedrooms, printing press, etc.
Picture 6) Sculpture (2011) of books floating without shelves - a “symbolic repository of personal narratives that together make the story of Umkhonto we Sizwe,” This sculpture leads to a building featuring narratives from modern MK supporters around the world who gave physical aid as late as the early 1990s as smugglers or via espionage. Even while the ANC and apartheid government were negotiating a new constitution from 1990-1994, the MK was prepared to continue its campaign of violence and sabotage, in the event that the government did not negotiate in good faith.
Obviously, now I know more than I ever did about South African political history -- tomorrow it will be time to go look at fields and animals again!

Offices to rent in Sandton
Sandton was established as a separate municipality in 1969 by the office of the Administrator of the Transvaal. It had formerly not formed part of Johannesburg but was managed, in part by the ‘parent city’ and Pretoria through the North Eastern Peri-Urban Land administration. Initially it was very much a residential area consisting mostly of small holdings with a rural “horsey” lifestyle attracting many of the upper-middle classes and Johannesburg elites. It was subsequently dubbed the “mink and manure” belt.[citation needed] The Rivonia Trial derives its name from the locality of Liliesleaf Farm within the Sandton suburb where many of the conspirators where captured by the South African state and subsequently tried for treason. Rivonia had previously been known as Edenburg and was changed to make itself distinct from Edenburg, Free State.Find the offices to rent in sandton.

Funding Crises: South African Govt. Closes National Heritage
Joseph Edegbo : The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture has emphasised the importance of institutions funded by government to account for public funds. This comes after Wednesday’s announcement of the closure of Liliesleaf national heritage site, which was attributed to a funding crisis that was faced by the organisation for several years. Between 1961 and 1963, Liliesleaf served as the…

🇿🇦 👊🏿 Nelson Mandela🇿🇦👊🏿 Rolihlahla Mandela was born into the Madiba clan in the village of Mvezo, in the Eastern Cape, on 18 July 1918. His mother was Nonqaphi Nosekeni and his father was Nkosi Mphakanyiswa Gadla Mandela, principal counsellor to the Acting King of the Thembu people, Jongintaba Dalindyebo. On 27 May 1963 he was transferred to Robben Island and returned to Pretoria on 12 June. Within a month police raided Liliesleaf, a secret hideout in Rivonia, Johannesburg, used by ANC and Communist Party activists, and several of his comrades were arrested. On 12 August 1988 he was taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with tuberculosis. After more than three months in two hospitals he was transferred on 7 December 1988 to a house at Victor Verster Prison near Paarl where he spent his last 14 months of imprisonment. He was released from its gates on Sunday 11 February 1990, nine days after the unbanning of the ANC and the PAC and nearly four months after the release of his remaining Rivonia comrades. Throughout his imprisonment he had rejected at least three conditional offers of release. Mandela immersed himself in official talks to end white minority rule and in 1991 was elected ANC President to replace his ailing friend, Oliver Tambo. In 1993 he and President FW de Klerk jointly won the Nobel Peace Prize and on 27 April 1994 he voted for the first time in his life. One of the most luxurious trains in the world, you can take a 27 hour train ride from Pretoria to Cape Town or in the other direction. The rooms vary from having two single beds to a full bed and some even have full sized bathtubs while others include standing showers. Each section of the train has its own butler, there is a turn down service, the appointment only gift shop sells diamonds and there is a cigar lounge with of course an open bar.

South Africa is famous for its wines with the majority of the vineyards being located just outside of Cape Town. There are many vineyards and wineries that you can visit for lunch, enjoy tasting menus, take tours and of course purchase some fabulous wines.
6. Language
There are no language barriers in South Africa as almost everyone speaks English and the country as a whole has 11 official languages. You might actually be surprised to find out that not only does everyone speak English but many are bi-lingual, tri-lingual or can speak even more languages.
7. History
If you like learning about history then this country has a story that you would be amazed to learn about. South Africa has a large tumultuous history and is one that people should learn about and understand if visiting. In Johannesburg you can visit the Apartheid Museum, Liliesleaf Museum and the country’s Constitutional Court to educate yourself on its past.
8. Johannesburg
Johannesburg is the largest city in South Africa and the largest city in the world not located by a river, ocean or lake. A neat fact about this city is that it also has 10 million trees (more trees than people) and is home to the biggest man made forest in the world. Known for great food and shopping it is also home to the continents biggest airport and is where many people begin their trips in South Africa.

9. Food
South African cuisine has a lot of outside influences like from Europe and Asia from colonialism times. They have some of the tastiest meats in the world and venture outside of the typical beef and pork. Ostrich is found on many menus as is springbok and if you are lucky you might even get to enjoy Kudu. They enjoy a good BBQ aka braii and one of the meats I liked most was biltong, which is similar to beef jerky. South Africa is also big on beer production with their SAB World of Beer tour in Johannesburg said to be the top tourist attraction in the country.
