Worst Descendants names you've ever heard and why? You can rant about it.

oh my god the NAMES of descendants jesus christ. i haven’t read all the books yet, so there are some characters i don’t know enough about to care about the name.

mal is just. it’s a good name but i don’t like that her full name is maleficent. feels weird to me. personally i like melinoe as her name, since she’s also hades’ daughter.

there is no way the evil queen would name evie JUST evie. that has to be a nickname. honestly any full name is better, but i like everild because everild grimhilde has a nice ring to it. though i don’t get why her mother’s name is now her last name but oh well.

jay deserves a cultural name. please. give him one. i personally like jayanti, but i know a lot of people say it’s short for jakeem.

for carlos I’m just confused why he has a spanish name when he’s british.

ben’s name is fine but why is his last name beast. whose decision was that. also, why is beast called beast the whole time when his name is adam. king adam sounds so much better than king beast.

why is there harry and harriet. i know they were made by different authors but like. please. communication between writers. personally i like to think harriet is called captain a lot. she hates it (hook insists he be called captain and not dad or anything like that)

jordan is the same as jay. give her an arabic name. i like joudah.

lonnie and li’l shang are abominations. disrespectful to their culture on soooo many levels. i saw someone say lonnie is a nickname for lanying and i sort of adopted that. so thanks whoever that was. for shang i’ve seen sheng and shuang, but i don’t really have a preference.

it’s bothers me that claudine’s name is close to her father’s. i don’t really have a headcanon for her actual name any why she’s called claudine but yeah that just bothers me.

for ginny, i could actually see gothel being a genuine last name, so i’m not super mad about her last name being gothel. however, her first name is definitely a nickname (i like gwendolyn).

i fully think most of the names are nicknames, these are just ones that bother me more.

I’d never thought this trio would work, but it does.

So I had this headcanon where Diego de Vil was adopted by Roger and Anita (along with Carlos) and he was settling well in Auradon (this was post d3 btw) and he decided to start his music career but he has no idea on how to. So he looked to his cousin for help, but Carlos can’t help him in terms building his cousin’s music career but Carlos knew someone who can.

Lonnie’s brother

Jr was elated to help Diego with his career by helping him setting up a YouTube channel or do some performances to get known in and around Auradon city so that Diego can make a name for himself.

I don’t want to spoil but yeah I can see these 3 boys work well

What are your completely honest thoughts on Lonnie and her family? They’re pretty underrated.

Lonnie deserved better than what she was given

Lonnie is very odd tho, in terms of characterization. Like she was very femme and stuff in the first movie, yet all of a sudden she’s this tomboy who wants to do sports? I think someone pointed out in a meeting that like “Hey, that’s Mulans daughter, maybe we should have her be more boyish”, which like sure okay

I like both versions tho, though I will admit that I prefer second movie Lonnie purely because she stands out more.

She was done dirty with some of her outfits (Though to be fair most of the Auradon characters were, like don’t get me started of fucking Doug), but I’m especially upset that she went to the Isle and didn’t get an Isle fit, like she’s just wearing gym clothes. We had time to custom make an entire outfit for Ben, including painting his logo on the jacket, but we couldn’t do anything for Lonnie? I would have loved to see her Isle fit

Absolutely loved her Cotillion outfit though, like it’s cute and it fits her.

I do really like her relationship with Jay too, I think they make a really good couple and it’s sad that she’s not in the third one

When it comes to Shang and Mulan tho…I am confused.

Because, Lonnie has her little monologue as Mal and the gang are making the love potion (Hate that aspect of the movie btw), where she talks about how her mum would make her freshly baked cookies and a glass of milk when she’s feeling sad, and ????

Mulan??? Really?? Even as a kid I was like “That doesn’t sound like Mulan”, and I hadn’t even seen the fucking movie at that point! I mean we see Mulan do chores in her movie, and meet the matchmaker, and she’s a bit of a disaster like you’re telling me that woman knows her way around the kitchen?

I will admit I have not seen Wicker World in years, and even then I only sparsely caught it on TV, so I dunno how she’s depicted there, but I think I should rewatch that series soon lol

What are your honest thoughts on Lonnie+Family?

Sorry for the wait, but I wanted to finish Lonnie's warrior sword so I will probably be focused on that

Anyways onto my answer...

I was liken 14-15 ish when I watched the first two films and I really liked her and I still do too but now I kinda grew up and had a chance to look into her character more and realised she wasn't really well written.

What is most upsetting for me is she could be a key point at any time in the movies but also in the books. But no piece of media in this franchise took that opportunity. Like she is there, yeah and she has some lines and stuff but nothing more. Shes in the back like literally any ak. Except for Ben and audrey. And we see audrey as a big character only in the last film.

I've seen people say that the movies especially are really mal centric and I agree, majority of the characters are just there.

Now I dont remember much about Lonnie in the books. It's been a while and I'm planning to reread them but I doubt she had any significant scenes for herself.

In Lonnie's warrior sword, which I literally just finished so it might be a bit too detailed,

First we had a memory with mulan, and I was so happy but that was the end of it. Now I think living up to the name of Mulan AND SHANG is a great plot point for her and her character but they couldn't do it well. Lost opportunity... but we have Mulan's name being mentioned at couple more places which all serve the 'living up to the name' and if the book was a bit longer they could explore it a bit better.

There is the matter of Li Shang. The matter is he is not there. Everyone ignored the man like they ignored Lonnie in the third movie. I would love to see some father-daughter bonding and we WERE ROBBED. so if anyone has any fic recommendations about Lonnie and Shang I would love that. Anyways, Shang in Lonnie's Warrior Sword was mentioned one (1) time.

"...sword fighting with her mother in the gardens, running laps around the palace with her father..."

That's it. And although I love the image of little Lonnie trying to keep up with her father while Shang purposely slows down for her is incredibly adorable, how would anyone think this would be enough to feed the fandom

Shang Jr is a whole other thing. Again I would love to see a relationship between Lonnie and Shang jr. And I also would like to see how filling up the name of Mulan AND SHANG would affect him. Because it would affect him as much as Lonnie.

Then there is the name situation. Firstly, I am not familiar with Chinese culture and I dont have anyone I can ask beside the internet so let me know if I need to include/exclude and/or change anything.

From what I've understood from the fandom, naming your child after yourself is very disrespectful so that is an issue. Honestly even if they were not gonna look into his name, all they needed to do was to search for some Chinese names and meanings. Like I could do that (and I am planning to cause there is no way I'm using Lil' Shang as a name in my version of descendants. Same goes with Lonnie. I did started to research about that but like Lonnie? Why? Naming with the same initials as your parent is a thing in the universe but by that logic they were supposed to do a name with m for mulan or s for shang, why did they go for L (I am assuming L is for Li but still) So they are nicknames given to them by Auradon and Sherwood Academy(was that where he was, I don't really remember)

For once I want Lonnie and Shang Jr (I am intentionally not calling him Lil' Shang cuz honestly between the two Shang Jr is not as disturbing to me as Lil' Shang) to be sassy. And that 100% came from grandma Fa. You know Mulan's grandmother. I want that woman to teach her great grand children things she wasn't supposed to. Like and she words and how to trick mushu or something.

Another point is (I've seen someone talk about it, I'll credit them if I can find it) the situation with Yi-Min. They grew up together with Lonnie and her cousins. Like Mulan saved China with these man of course their children are best friends. Also I love that she also competes in the Auradon warrior thing.

One more thing, I know it's already too long and I didnt have my fixation on Mulan and Mulan 2 yet so Lonnie and family are not people I've given much thought about but still....

We knew King beast had like all magical and non magical stuff collected in the museum but why? Like why would you disarm MULTIPLE KINGDOMS. I hate that man.

Also, in Lonnie's Warrior sword it says "... There it(Shan Yu's sword) could be watched over by the Imperial Council, who oversaw all official matters in the Imperial City, until Lonnie was old enough to inherit it." Why? Why does Lonnie inherit a council. Okay I know her parents saved China but why does Lonnie inherit a council. (Do I need to rewatch the mulan movies? probably)

Anyway... with the addition of the All-Knowing-One and her potential is also being lost... I will finish my rant here.

Honest opinions on Lonnie (plus family, parents specifically)?

I love Lonnie and all three versions of her (kidding mostly).

I do wish they were more consistent with her character. It would've been cool to this girl who's very feminine, love to dance hip-hop and also aspire to join R.O.A.R, because why can't girls have multiple hobbies? I also wish for a better name because Lonnie? Really? I low-key have a headcanon that it's her nickname.

Her parents? Stellar! We love a bi4bi couple.

As for Lil Shang? I currently don't remember enough about him to form an opinion but other than his name, I'm sure he's swell.

It is canon that Harriet has a pirate crew! In the first Isle book it mentions that Harriet's crew comes to the party. Also Mal scares a boy who is mentioned to be part of Harriet's crew and runs around with a fake hook.

I'm not sure about brutally honest lol but I'll do my best:

HARRIET HOOK

• I don't think you guys understand how much I love Harriet. She's one of my most favorite Descendants characters to write about.

• Based on the few things we know about her from the books, she already seems awesome. Sometimes, I have to remind myself that my headcanons are not canon lol but I have many about her.

• What bothers me the most about Harriet is not her fault at all. I get so mad that they have created Harriet, Harry and CJ, and altright refuse to have them coexist. I would love to see all three Hook siblings together, but noooo, Disney hates fun.

• I can't remember if they mention her having her own crew, but to me, she does and it's one of the most respected gangs on the Isle. No one dares messing with Captain Harriet.

• She dances with Anthony Tremaine in the books and they're a couple. I'm not sorry, I make the rules and they are canon to me.

• To be honest, I could make a whole list of my headcanons about Harriet, I'm just not doing it now because there's more characters to talk about.

LI SHANG JR

• I wish we had seen more of him, maybe have him and Lonnie interact - then again, I don't think it would be possible for them to include all the characters I want in the movies.

• Again, I hate his name, just to make it clear. Also, just made some headcanons about him and Lonnie here.

• It would be nice to have him interacting with Jay and Carlos in D1 after they joined the Tourney team, maybe giving them pep talks instead of the coach and help them feel like they belong there.

HERKIE

• If Disney doesn't stop giving Descendants characters such terrible names, I swear-

• Again, since he's part of the Tourney team, it would be cool to see the boys interacting with him. Since Herkie's really strong, he could show Jay strenght doesn't have to equal agression.

• I also have a few headcanons about him that I'd be willing to share someday. Herkie's also a minor character in my fic about Audrey.

AZIZ

• My poor boy, getting cut from the first movie...

• Seriously, I would've loved to see him! They cut his character and didn't even have him appear in the other movies or Wicked World.

• He was also supposed to be in the Tourney team, why does Disney hate them lol So yeah, it would've been really nice to see all of these boys hanging out. Since Mal mentions Jay getting "victory pizza with the team", I wish we had gotten to see that.

• Despite D1 being the movie that I think was able to work the Core Four individually the best, I still think we could've seen a bit more of how the boys were doing in Auradon.

CLAUDINE FROLLO

• This character... Oh, I adore her. Like I said on my other post, I don't remember much from the books, but I know she was part of the Anti-Heroes Club.

• I always say I wish Descendants could be darker, and Claudine is one of the main reasons why. The daughter of Claude Frollo? The girl is a walking bundle of trauma. There are some og characters that I can see growing to be good parents, but Frollo? No, call child services.

• I don't really like that Claudine is mentioned to be the person ringing the bell at Dragon Hall in the books, mainly because I don't think Frollo would raise her to be a copy of Quasimodo.

• Still, I like that she's part of the Anti-Heroes Club, and I imagine her as very strong girl who would be extremely determine not to become like her father.

Which book Aks would be a total character favorite if he/she comes to life and why?

ok so i haven’t finished reading the books, so i probably don’t know EVERY character, but out of the ones i do know.

for aks, i’d love to see artie. i’ve mentioned before that i love arthuriana, so seeing this is descendants would be so cool. in the sword and the stone, arthur hadn’t formed his table, but by descendants, he has. there’s clearly a story there, and artie could tell it. also, he’s just sweet and funny and young and none of the aks or vks are really that age, so having a character like that would add, idk, liveliness to the series? or maybe he could be a part of a new generation of sorts, especially now that they seem to be focusing on younger characters, going by rise of red. i’d imagine he’s probably around the age of chloe and red.

i’d also love to see li’l shang. i love mulan, and i love lonnie, and i’d love to see him and lonnie interact. they should fight crime together or something. vigilante li siblings.

as for vks, i’d love to see claudine, because she is already a favorite, and she has literally zero lines. i am holding ben captive as we speak to make him get her off the isle.

i’d also love to see maddy, for the same reasons as artie. i also kind of feel bad for her, because uma fully replaced her as mal’s rival. As much as i love Uma, i will never forgive the writers for ignoring maddy when she was RIGHT THERE and would be such a cool villain. also, her and uma would totally be friends.

would also like to see harriet. and the hook siblings interact in general. i can think of like, two times in canon they acknowledge each other as siblings.

honestly i just want every book character to make it into a movie/tv show, but these are the ones i’d love most.
