(Female) Hip Hop Fashion Mount Rushmore
by Heaven Sent ™
Tumblr media
(left to right)
1. Stylist Misa Hylton and rapper Lil Kim first introduced the concept of hip hop fashion in Kim’s iconic “Crush on You” music video. Through the use of designer pieces, custom wigs, and iconic handmade outfits, these two women set the stage for rappers (both male and female) to take fashion seriously.
2. Fashion designer Kimora Lee Simmons launched the global fashion brand Baby Phat in 1999. Baby Phat’s commercial success and undeniable cultural impact makes it the most recognizable “urban” fashion brand of the 2000’s.
3. Rihanna, a popular musician and business mogul, is often said to be one of the most fashionable celebrities in the world. Through the launch of her Fenty Puma Creepers in 2015, she provided a cultural reset, in which women’s streetwear was elevated to new heights. She also provided never before seen size inclusivity through her Savage x Fenty lingerie brand.
4. 1/2 of the rap duo City Girls, JT is Generation Z’s emerging fashion icon. By wearing brands she genuinely likes and resonates with, JT has been able to craft her own unique style and aesthetic. Arguably the most fashionable rapper in the music industry right now, JT’s style is bold and inspiring to a new generation that values authenticity.

Kimberly Denise Jones (July 11, 1974) known as Lil’ Kim, is a rapper. She was born and raised in New York City. She would freestyle rap, influenced by fellow female hip-hop artists like MC Lyte and the Lady of Rage. She was discovered by fellow rapper The Notorious B.I.G., who invited her to join his group Junior M.A.F.I.A.; their debut album, Conspiracy, generated two top 20 singles in the US and was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.
Her debut studio album Hard Core (1996) was certified double platinum in March 2001. It has sold more than six million copies worldwide and spawned three successful singles: “No Time,” “Not Tonight (Ladies Night),” and “Crush on You.” Hard Core had the highest debut in the US for a female rap album at the time. Her following albums, The Notorious K.I.M. (2000) and La Bella Mafia (2003) were certified platinum. She reached #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 with the single “Lady Marmalade”. Other notable singles from this period include “The Jump Off” and “Magic Stick,” the latter of which reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming her 2nd-highest-charting single as a lead artist.
She served a one-year prison sentence for lying to a jury about her friends’ involvement in a shooting. During her incarceration, her fourth album, The Naked Truth, was released to positive reviews from critics. A reality series covering her sentence, Lil’ Kim: Countdown to Lockdown, premiered on BET. She released her first mixtape, Ms. G.O.A.T. (2008), and appeared on Dancing with the Stars. She continued to release music and perform. Her fifth studio album, 9, was released in 2019.
She has been referred to as the “Queen of Rap,” as well as her alias “Queen Bee”. She has sold more than 15 million albums and 30 million singles worldwide. Her songs “No Time,” “Big Momma Thang,” and “Not Tonight (Ladies Night)” were each listed on Complex’s list of the 50 Best Rap Songs By Women. She was listed on VH1’s 100 Greatest Women in Music list at #45, the second-highest position for a solo female hip-hop artist. She has one daughter. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Paul Joseph Watson says pop culture is more vulgar in 2016 than at any other time in history, although he's British and in the 60's, 70's and 80's England had "Carry On" movies and "The Benny Hill Show" that was filled with a lot of smutty humor.
And if Paul thinks pop culture today is vulgar, look at the late 1990's and early 2000's: when "The Jerry Springer Show", "South Park", Tom Green, Marilyn Manson (who PJW praises in his video), "Jackass", Lil' Kim, Limp Bizkit, trashy talk shows like Ricki Lake and Jenny Jones, "Fear Factor", "The Man Show" and the World Wrestling Federation's Attitude era were at the zenith of their popularity, when Eminem was at his most lyrically shocking and when Howard Stern was still popular and relevant.
Hell, those pop culture things were considered vulgar in their time and are still considered vulgar today.
There was a lot of vulgar pop culture in the 90's.

Lina Reign
Tumblr media
Lina Reign is a local R&B artist who's very inspired by the 90's and early 2000's. This photoshoot was inspired by Lil Kim's music video for Crush on You.
These photos were taken before I had any professional lighting, yet still remain as some of my favorites. I used one ring light in the middle of her living room and tried my best to make it look professional. I like to think that your equipment shouldn't limit you. If you're interested in photography, learning how to play with lighting is key. You don't need the $300-$1000 light, you can learn to work with what you have and still get quality results. ★
