So in Spain, its been disovered that  an amatuer tried to re-touch a famous work of art, and failed twice. The altered work is a oil painting copy of the 17th century piece by the Spanish Baroque artist Bartolomé Esteban Murillo. The title of the work is, 'The Immaculate Conception of Los Venerables'. The owner of this piece, an art collecter based in Valencia, who paid 1200 euros for it, had requested an employee of a furniture repair company to clean the painting. But during the cleaning, the Virgin Mary's face changed. After not one, but two restoration attempts, the painting was completely ruined, and the owner was apparently very angry. So, if you search for it, you will be able to find the images online. We can't show you them here due to the issue of image rights (*On screen text: Search for Spain painting restoration*). But...yehh..

kaitou joker - a really fun manga turned anime (i haven’t read the manga but i’ve heard people say the anime is better) about flashy bright-colored phantom thieves. wacky, super entertaining concepts, coupled with a surprising amount of depth and emotion. it’s zany and childlike and EVERYONE has a tragic backstory. in any case it’s really fun and engaging, i don’t post about it much here bc it’s not super on my radar but it’s an absolutely underrated gem of a show (and probably less popular than other stuff i’m going to post about)

elsword - i’m only into this one secondhand and mostly just piggyback off my friends’ posts but this one is a korean mmo, i don’t know much about how the actual game goes but the characters are all super compelling from what i hear about them from my friends. the character designs are all really good as well

lobotomy corporation - again, only into this one secondhand. it’s a game inspired by scp stuff where you work for a corporation in a post-apocalyptic world that extracts energy from monsters, and you have to allocate resources, appease the monsters, contain them when they rampage, choose how many of your employees to sacrifice, etc. it sounds really good and fun and i love the characters. i really wanna play it but i don’t have the time ;_;

megaman x - okay so this isn’t exactly unknown but like transformers it’s not, like, in the mainstream fandom spotlight so i guess it counts. really good video game series about robots at war that you can analyze for all sorts of deep themes about morality, pacifism, etc, etc. also x and zero are gay. stan axl

gundam build fighters - the gundam franchise is really famous but this installment less so, it takes place in a world where the rest of the gundam franchise is fictional and people do battles with their little gundam plastic model merch. obviously it’s very, exists to sell toys, but like yugioh it has a really fun uplifting vibe of people just being passionate about their hobbies and having fun with that, it’s really sweet

kamen rider - again mostly secondhand hbfdgj can you tell i’m reeeeally bad at getting around to watching/playing things but i like this one. japanese live-action superhero show that’s been ongoing since like the 60s, every year there’s a new series with a new plot and main character. it seems really fun a lot of people are into it. i like ooo and w because i love ankh and philip. insanely popular in japan so idk if it counts as lesser known but yknow

danball senki - by the same company and director as inazuma eleven and it’s a lot like inazuma eleven except with tiny remote-controlled fighting robots instead of soccer. i’m not very far in but already they’ve used these tiny remote-controlled robots to stop an assassination attempt on the prime minister sfhgldg akihiro hino at it again. i only know like three people who have seen it but everyone says it’s super good so i’d check it out

yugioh spinoffs - idk what you followed me for so maybe you know these already but while the original yugioh is super popular the spinoffs are less known, there’s still a huge fanbase but they aren’t really in the collective nerd consciousness as much, anyway they’re all really good. i recommend gx, 5ds and zexal (OH GOD ZEXAL) the most, arc v is universally panned as a disappointment, have heard mixed reviews on vrains but i’m not very big on it. but gx 5ds and ZEXAL!!! are really really good (gx has a loooot of filler in the first half though and zexal also kind of does)

princess tutu - I KEEP FORGETTING PRINCESS TUTU because it’s not really an Interest in that i get the urge to create fanworks for it but it is one of my favorite shows of all time, it’s about fairytale characters who are trapped in a story made by an author who loves tragic endings, and need to escape the tragic ending and forge a new one. it’s also about ballet, and ducks. i admit a lot of me liking it is because it hits on a whole bunch of my personal favorite tropes/aesthetics but it’s also really good in general 

animorphs - OH MY GOD I FORGOT ANIMORPHS. please read animorphs. i know it’s a meme to make fun of the covers but it’s genuinely one of the best ya series of all time it gets soooo deep into exploring and deconstructing all the realistic implications of the whole “plucky teens fight an alien invasion” setup, fair warning it gets BRUTAL and there is an entire genre of tumblr posts that are just people who only know the covers discovering how brutal it is but it’s sooo good. you can read it legally for free online

vsinger - i guess this counts? a line of vocaloids made by shanghai henian that have more lore and background to them than the other vocaloids who are kind of just a design, a name and an age. like for instance tianyi is an alien who can detect peoples emotions using music and can only communicate in song. so you have a bit more character stuff to play around with. i’m mostly just there for longya he’s sexy. gatling is a good song

also i’m really interested in this webtoon called ga dam hang seol it looks so good and interesting but the translation team consists entirely of one friend of mine who is always really busy and so the translation is only 5 chapters and updates very sporadically cries but just in case you’re interested you can read the comic here and the translation is here

this is so much longer than i planned, im sorry, i’ll add a read more when im not mobile!!

to set the scene, richie and eddie were best friends at the age of 18. they were touring colleges together because they’re best friends and they cant imagine being seperated after high school. with the stellar grades both boys had gotten, they had been accepted into a few of the same of their choice schools.

Richie groaned as they walked into the main building of yet another college campus. “seriously, ed’s, this is the third one this weekend. they’re literally, all the same! and if there’s something different about one of them, we could find out online! from the comfort of my couch, while watching tv or something! which is where i would rather be than walking down the same, holy shit, this is literally the same tile as the second campus we went to yesterday! is that allowed? can you copyright floo-”“oh my god, Richie, would you shut up” eddie said, cutting off his rambling. it wasn’t in a mean way though. eddie kind of loved when richie babbled. just not when he was trying to focus on reading the signs in the hallway leading them to the admissions area. “this way,” he said, grabbing richie by the hand and taking a sharp turn down a hall to their right. they stopped in front of an elevator and richie took it upon himself to press the up button, not once, but three times.eddie rolled his eyes fondly, and Richie looked at him and shrugged. “I’m nothing if not persistant!”when the door opened up their hands were still clasped together, neither of them even noticing. because that was just a thing with eddie and richie. since they were kids they had always been nonchalantly in each others space; arms around the other, holding hands, legs tucked under one another during movie nights. bev had once joked that it was the reason richie hadn’t ever had a girlfriend, and eddie couldn’t explain the sinking feeling in his gut. but it was forgoten when richie had just pulled him closer and kissed the top of his head, declaring “why would i ever want a girlfriend when ed’s here gives me all the lovin’ I need!” he had just chuckled and shoved richie off him at the time, but he couldn’t ignore the warmth the words sent through him.“so is our dorm going to ha-” while surely Richie was planning to ramble on again the whole way, the elevator had other plans. because not even ten seconds after they started moving upwards, there was a loud rattle from above and they came to a screeching halt. the force of the stop was almost enough to knock them down.“well, shit I always knew college was going to kill me.” richie said, looking down at eddie to see his famous fond eye roll. but all he found in it’s place was a sheet-white pale face staring straight ahead, and the grip on his hand grew tighter. “eds? eddie, are you okay?”no, he wasn’t okay. he felt like if he moved at all, the elevator would come crasing down on top of them. the lights had gone dim, and the walls seemed to grow tighter. oh god, the walls. they’re so close to him. how could oxygen get in if they were stuck in middle of two floors. theres no air in here. holy, fuck, he’s going to run out of air, he’s going to-suddenly richies face was in front of him, and he felt two cold hands gripping the sides of his face softly, “-at me, eddie.” richies voice sounded far away, but he could clearly see him standing so close. ashpyxiation. he couldn’t hear him because he couldn’t breathe and his nerves were dying from lack of oxygen. it was the only explination. he noticed richie move again, suddenly out of sight, but he felt the warmth of the other boys body behind him, pulling him gently by his shoulders into a sitting posistion; but he couldn’t sit, if he moved and sat down, he was going to die.“you aren’t going to die,” richies voice spoke softly in his ear. eddie hadnt even realized he had said that out loud. “you just need to breathe.” eddie could feel that is back was against richies chest, and when richie reached an arm to lay his palm flat over eddie’s chest, he finally realised how rapidly he was breathing, feeling richies hand movie up and down in rapid succesion with his chest. “and you can do that okay? you can breathe, i’ve got you. can you feel my chest against your back?” eddie could only manage a nod through his suttering gasps. “good, baby, now just feel how it rises up and down, and just match it, okay?” richie took careful breaths, emphasising the movement of breathing in and out, and eddie could feel the rise and fall of richie’s chest againt his back, and he did his best to match it, studdering at first, but slowly evening out as richie continued to talk lowly into his ear. it helped to focus on it. “in and out, just like that, good, you’re okay, its okay.”when eddie felt he finally had control over himself again, his eyes were watery and he felt exhausted. he turned around just enough to see richie’s face.richie, who had removed his hand from eddies chest but still kept his arms wrapped around him, was looking down at him with a expression that was trying hard not to be concerned. he reached one hand up to stroke eddies cheek with his thumb. “are you okay?”“im okay.” eddie responded, almost a whisper. “thanks to you.”richie shook his head, “i didn’t do anything, i just.. reacted.”“exactly. you.. you reacted how i needed you to. i didn’t even… ive never felt anything like that before, i don’t know what happened.”“it was a panic attack, eddie. i- i used to get them sometimes, when my dad.. y'know. that’s- that’s how I knew what to do. i just did what i would’ve needed someone to do to me back then.”eddie couldn’t look away from the other boys eyes. he reached up pulling his glasses off his face and holding them in his hands. richie didn’t protest, but he looked at him questioningly. “im going to kiss you now.” eddie spoke, still looking into his eyes. richies stomach erupted with butterflies. he couldn’t remember a time he didn’t want that. “okay.” he whispered into the quietness of the elevator. “okay.” eddie repeated and moved to close the distance between them. and fuck if it wasn’t worth every moment that they hadn’t been doing this. why had they waited so fucking long. eddie reached his hands up and tangled them in richies hair as richie licked into his mouth. richie tried to muffle a moan as the other boy tugged on his hair. eddie pulled away, only long enough to adjust himself so he was straddling richies legs, sitting in his lap. this time richie couldn’t contain his moan when eddie came back into the kiss, full force with both hands in his hair. just as richie grabbed eddies hips to pull him closer into him, the lights to the elevator brightened back to their full capacity. they pulled apart quickly, and richie groaned and leaned his head back when service works came knocking on the elevator door asking if anyone was in there. because now that he had this, he didn’t think he would ever want to stop.

This is just a personal rant. Insecurities and fandom stuff. You're free to offer advice if you have any, reassurance if I'm doing something right, gentle criticism if you think I could do something differently --

I'm relatively new to RP and Tumblr in general. I don't have a deeply-rooted establishment with other users that go back years.

I don't have a huge following I don't... think? And honestly, I really don't care about how many people follow me, just how many people follow me who enjoy what I create and what I write on this website. It sounds like a canned response but I genuinely do mean this. I don't want to pad my follower count because... why?

Point being, I don't subscribe to age-old Tumblr RP/fandom 'rules' because I don't understand it.

When I joined Tumblr it was because someone reposted a thing I did for Zell from DeviantArt. They didn't credit me with a direct link, just said "Zell by SynnoveD" and moved on.

Honestly, I got a bit irked by that because the least they could do was link it back to my original post. But whatever, I got on, started a blog, and decided yay! I'll write my fanfic and post it here!

And it was received... somewhat better than I had anticipated. I was hella intimidated, truthfully. There were a lot of 'famous' fanfic writers that I admired so greatly who were liking my posts and following me back. I got starstruck over a few and when I found out about RP I dove right in and... well, here we are.

I never got into the whole... fandom culture thing. I've loved this game and the characters I write for 18 years and it wasn't until a few years ago that I realized there was even an active community with a collective interest for VIII.

I learned so much. I made so many new friends. I introduced new ideas (which I quickly learned were called 'headcanons' and I was even more ecstatic to hear about how so many people shared in the same thoughts and feelings that I had about Seifer and everything else.) I remember having conversations regarding a few of these 'popular' blogs where they had never considered behaviors about Seifer in the way that I had been all this time.

I was so happy. I found a 'home' online. That is until anons came.

And when anons came, they tore apart my fanfics. They told me 'No, Rinoa wouldn't do that.' or 'Squall would NEVER do this...' Headcanons were interpretations of a character, are they not? Why was it so wrong of me to portray the things I had in this light?

More came, more OOC talk in tiny IM windows happened and I quickly started to feel a bit pushed out because if I said one thing, then it would contradict this 'older, better' thing.

So I moved to RP, and I kept a few of these friends. But later, as I started developing Seifer, as I started gaining a presence and becoming a sought-after blog, people started distancing themselves from me.

What changed? Had my behavior been different? I did begin to feel extremely confident in my portrayal. Had that come off as arrogant and offended somebody? After a few toxic situations, I had to put my foot down in some cases for my own mental health's sake, had cutting bad people out of my life resulted in negative consequences? Because they were 'popular' or otherwise, influential blogs?

Last year began a huge shift in the fandom where suddenly I had become this horrible person and I didn't know why. Nobody would tell me. And then once the drama had subsided, after all the bullshit had died away, I started getting messages, people telling me things about a person I had blocked and the things they said and...

Goddamn. I'm just here to write.

I don't understand. I feel like I missed the whole 'here's everything you need to survive Tumblr and not offend anybody' lesson.

Anyway.

I feel shut out of my own fandom. I don't know if it's because the fandom is so small on the RP side or if I've written or made a headcanon that personally offended somebody... I just don't know. I feel so painfully self-conscious about writing ANYTHING in VIII because it's only a matter of a few days after where someone will post something to contradict what I've already written. And this isn't just with Seifer. God, I can't write anything unique on Zell either be in RP or fanfic community. I remember getting an anon harshly criticizing my decisions on how to write Zell in my epic fanfic.

No offense but none of us own these characters. We're free to write them as we see fit. If I can have a murderous/bipolar Zell, the fandom can have their bdsm semi-noncon SeiferxSquall lemons and Genderswap!AU's.

But back on topic -- Genuinely, sincerely, from the deepest part of my soul, I'm not here to intentionally piss people off. I don't want that. I want community and I want people to write together and just be happy and enjoy this amazing talent we're all capable of.

Just.... hgh. I'll delete this later, I just needed to write this out so it wasn't stuck in my head. Maybe someone will read this and have an idea, or know something and they can maybe fill me in on a part that I'm leaving out or missing.

And for future reference, if I ever offend you. Yes, you who have taken the time to read all of this -- if I ever offend or say something you disagree with or maybe make a comment that upsets you, I encourage you to come to me in private and let's talk. Can we please push aside our anxieties and insecurities and bring forward what is really bothering us instead of this dancing around the subject?

“Everything, Everything” by Nicola Yoon

Synopsis: My disease is as rare as it is famous. Basically, I'm allergic to the world. I don't leave my house, have not left my house in seventeen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla. But then one day, a moving truck arrives next door. I look out my window, and I see him. He's tall, lean, and wearing all black-- black T-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly. Maybe we can't predict the future, but we can predict some things. For example, I am certainly going to fall in love with Olly. It's almost certainly going to be a disaster.

Published: 2015 (Delacorte Press) Genre: Young Adult, Fiction Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Reader Review: This book has been on my radar for months. I first saw the cover of it on a normal day at work at the library. I adore this cover, by the way; it's illustrated by Nicola Yoon's husband, David Yoon, and it's vibrant and eye-catching and... everything (ha) that I would want a book cover to be. Anyway, soon after, I found out it was going to be a movie, which is also something that has been and still is on my radar. But before the movie, I wanted to be that person that I've been with similar books-turned-movie adaptations (such adaptations including "The Fault in Our Stars" and "My Sister's Keeper") and get to know the source material to better compare that to the movie. Turns out, as is the case with many books that people discover a recently-released movie originated from, there were many holds on many copies of this book. I was #14 on the list. Yet three days later, the book arrived and all but fell into my lap. Chalk it up to a working of the Library Network gods.

The story itself revolves around a sickly girl named Maddy, who is otherwise actually a healthy girl save for the fact that she has Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID), a disease that prevents her from mingling with the outside world for fear of anything triggering the illness. She lives in a sterilized, air-locked house that she has not left since infancy with her single mother and (legitimate) nurse, Pauline; her father and brother were killed in a car crash around the time of Maddy's diagnosis. One day, neighbors move in across the street, including a boy Maddy's age, named Olly. Despite never leaving her house, the two manage to strike up a friendship that develops into more over time, as they face adversities that affect their everyday lives between Maddy's disease and Olly living with an alcoholic father. So, yes, even though I just said in the last review that romances aren't usually my bag, I fell as head over heels with this one as Olly does with Maddy. I would say "Whoops", but I can't really find myself feeling bad for reading another "not another teen romance" novel.

To start (well, aside from me starting off with needless praising of the book's mere cover), it's been quiet a while, possibly since "The Elephant Man" (review here), since I've read a book and it became all I thought about. Waiting for any spare moment of time to pick it up and continue on. Wondering, "And then what???" That was, of course, until this book. I literally could not put it down; I chipped away at it between work breaks and breakfast and afterwards dedicated my morning off to finishing it, taking a grand total of 8 hours for me to complete. The main reason for this is because, as was the case with "Eleanor & Park", I love when people can do a trope/cliche (the "teen love story" one, in this case), and do something to freshen it up and make it more than its stereotype. I was fascinated by the idea of a "limited love", especially for teenagers who get distracted by technology and hormones in the modern age (only a slight exaggeration, let's be real). A "limited love" where they have to go the extra mile in order to be with and communicate with that person, and where the conflict isn't just "one of them cheats"/"they get into a fight"/"they have to separate to go to different colleges", etc. Because, well, that's boring, especially when you're living it/have lived it. And it prompts the author to get creative while also keeping it realistic, something I feel Yoon did to a tee with the situation she created. So give me something with a twist-- in this case, a girl who could die if she even touches a non-decontaminated boy-- and I'm sold. 

Speaking of creativity of the author-- and this may just be a case of me not having read enough YA novels from this decade-- but Yoon takes the creativity to the presentation as much as she does the subject matter. Her short chapters aren't just dialogue and paragraphs; sometimes they're pictures or journal entries "hand-written" by the narrator, Maddy, sometimes they're "realistic pictures" of things that propel the story forward, such as medical documents or plane tickets, and sometimes they're e-mails and instant message conversations. It adds that multi-media flare that encompasses new young love nowadays (boy, do I feel old for writing that), and shows the progression of Maddy and Olly's relationship, from a person Maddy wistfully watches from her window, to a crush and, eventually, to love. However, this does act as a double-edged sword. It forces the reader to read between the lines and interpret a deeper meaning from some of these e-mails and IMs. Text is so two-dimensional and without the interjections of the narrator’s thoughts and feelings as I've seen done in other books, some chapters are just completely IMs where we have to imagine how they're "saying" this, what they're feeling when they're "saying" this, how long between each message they paused or backspaced before continuing on. We have to assume it's what the story has set itself up to eventually be, but sometimes it could be taken in a few different contexts. Art imitating real life first-world problems.

There are four major players in this book: Maddy, Olly, Maddy's mother, Pauline and Maddy's nurse while her mom is at work, Carla. The relationship with Maddy and her mom is depicted as such a loving one, as her mom really is Maddy's best friend given her limited interaction with other people. And Maddy has that type of friendly relationship with Carla as well, having known her since she was 3 (she's 18 in the present day of this novel). However, rather than being shown as a lonely girl wanting friends and the beach and escape, she's shown as a girl who has for so long dealt with her disease and its limitations, she knows that hoping for more is not possible, and never lets herself. Instead, she absorbs herself in copious amounts of reading, her online studies, and special game nights with her mom. It's set up so that, when she meets Olly, not only does her heart open up in a way it never has, but so does her entire perspective on life. She wants more, dares to be a dreamer, because the world brought her Olly, and there's so much more the world could bring her if she goes for it. Her relationship with Olly is one that is new for both of them in different ways, and the pacing of their relationship is well done and believable, with no act being done too fast or too slow, and the only limitation (most of the time) being Maddy's illness. However, the way that her relationship with her mother is portrayed is one that can make your heart feel warmed more than some scenes with her and Olly. They are dependent on each other; they're all the other one has. And they have such genuine and tender mother-daughter moments, it made me want to go and play a board game with my own mom. I think this speaks to Maddy herself, as she doesn't have many people she can be around, so she cherishes each relationship with those in her very small circle, and it shows. 

Now to the part where I answer the burning question of, "But if there's so much good about it, why is it only a 4.5?" Well, for one, I'm very selective and often skeptical of what a "perfect" book is. I can see by the source material why they wanted to make this a movie, in the same vein as the aforementioned "The Fault in Our Stars" (which also has that "dying girl love story" premise, now that I think about it...). It's different, dramatic yet still realistic and tugs at your heartstrings. But there are details omitted in this novel that I felt would have given me a better, fuller picture. One thing that bothered me was the lack of details pertaining to Maddy and Olly's families. There are a lot of details about Maddy's family already, but despite all of this, her father and brother are never given names, and her brother's age at his time of death is never specified. All that's said in regards to the latter is that Maddy was only a few months' old when the car crash that killed him and their father happened. But by making them nameless, they could be anyone. It's less personal and you don't feel the tugs of sympathy for the family that you should because these two are more just "there" than they are characters that serve the story as a whole. Olly's home life is the same. Maddy jots down the happenings of each family member from what she observes outside of her window, so we get to know bits about them by the bits Maddy knows. Olly's father-- also nameless-- does serve a greater purpose for the dynamic of the entire family, but we never get to know any of the other family members outside of their toxic relationships. And sometimes, Olly comes off as a very typical too-cool, rebel, loner kid, always wearing black and being really into parkour for no explained reason. And his e-mail name is "genericuser033," for crying out loud. While he does open up, and we do see both that he is more than his rebellious persona and that he also is that way for a reason, things like this just make me cringe a little. This is how teens can be though, so I'm probably nit-picking at this point. To continue nit-picking, one scene that left me confused due entirely to its lack of clarity is when-- semi-spoiler-- Maddy's mother does eventually find out about Olly, and Maddy indicates that it's because of a black rubber band she accidentally leaves on her nightstand that Olly likes to wear and fidget around with, but we're never given any explanation: Does her mom just know because it's something she's never seen before? Does she know because she's seen Olly wearing it? And what is the significance of that rubber band anyway? It's not a hair tie, as Olly is described to us as a boy with really short hair, so why did he give it to Maddy? And when? So many questions for a little rubber band but, really, it does make all the difference.

Some of this is, as I wrote, splitting hairs, but books are written to enjoy first and critique second. Not just authors, but all artists of all mediums pick and pick at the tiniest so-called imperfections in their work, but because of that, a lot of them know how to take constructive criticism. I can't help but feel like Yoon could be one of those authors. Especially for this being her debut novel (Having your first book be a movie? You have to admit that that's pretty amazing), I'm sure she herself could look back and pick parts she would want to change now with a couple more novels under her belt. In the end, "Everything, Everything" does give us everything (everything): romance, comedy, a healthy blend of serious and light-hearted moments, and drama. Especially drama. I won't spoil it for you, but the last fifty pages are probably the best part of the entire novel. There's a twist that caught me so off-guard and also answered my burning question of "How are they going to overcome this???" so brilliantly, I'm still reeling over it. It's so good, and is extremely poignant. It's one of those twists that makes you go back and reread certain earlier excerpts in a new light and just... I could go on. Instead, I'll use these last few lines to urge you, if you like YA, to read this book. I feel like it's the quintessential 2010s YA novel. It has a copious amount of multi-media insertions, while also giving nods to both modern and classic references. It tackles heavy issues. It's quirky and sometimes sarcastic. But overall it was such a lovely book to binge-read. If I didn't have a literal stack of books to read, I'd reread it and look for more details lost on me the first time reading. What I'll do now, with cautious optimism, is go and see the movie, and pray that whatever liberties taken for the movie aren't ones that make me disenchanted with this enchanting story.

These guidebooks (しおり shiori) are primarily associated with school trips, such as field trips (at all ages) or those overnight trips middle and high school students do. However, they’re sometimes made for personal (or work) group vacations as well, often by whoever’s in charge of organizing the event. It will generally contain a schedule and various other bits of useful/relevant information about the trip, basically a glorified pamphlet or printout. It’s also common to give them a title, as seen here, to kind of represent the trip.

All that said, you gotta be pretty fired up about the trip to actually go out of your way to make these things yourself, so there’s definitely an element of “aww, she’s so excited” intended here.

The 思ひ出 (omoide, memories) in the title is usually written 思い出; in modern Japanese ひ is the hiragana for hi, and い is for i, but in classical Japanese it wasn’t quite so clear-cut. In “normal” usage nowadays it would pretty much always be い, but you can use the ひ for stuff like this to make it more emotional/old-fashioned. For example, it’s used in the Japanese title for the Studio Ghibli film Only Yesterday (おもひでぽろぽろ).

The phrase she uses in the Japanese is “charisma demon” (well, akuma 悪魔). “Charisma” as a loan word when paired with a noun like that basically means charismatic + star power; someone who’s so good at being whatever [noun] is they’ve gotten some level of acclaim for it. An example would be a “charisma beautician,” someone who’s highly skilled and has some fame for working on celebrities or something.

It’s not very commonly used with professions that would generally require charisma and lead to stardom by default, like an actor or something.

When using it to refer to yourself, it’s like proclaiming yourself a star; not exactly the best of manners even when true.

It’s not shown in the typeset subs, but she actually misspells the word (i.e. writes the wrong kanji, 行 instead of 業; both can be pronounced gyou) and has to cross it out and rewrite.

The original line here is “do bananas count as snacks?” (バナナはおやつに含まれますか？). This is in reference to a rule on school field trips that you can only bring (usually) 300 yen worth of snacks. Schools typically enforce this rule to keep kids from bringing a bunch of junk food or whatever and spoiling their lunch by eating it on the bus/train, and also to maintain a sense of equality among students with different home environments.

The banana question is an oyakusoku question somebody always asks when the teacher is explaining the trip. Nowadays, it’s generally a thing asked as a joke about trying to find a way around the snack cap. However, back in the 50s/60s it was a serious question.

Prior to that, bananas were fairly hard to come by in Japan and largely considered a bit of a luxury food, but by the 60s they were becoming somewhat more accessible to the average person (but still maintained their status as a fancy treat). Since school trips are kind of a rare and special event, it wasn’t uncommon for parents to want to send something special (i.e. a banana) for the kid to eat on it. So you’d always have at least one kid who would ask whether that banana would be included as part of their snack limit, or part of their lunch (which generally you’d bring from home).

That might make more sense if you consider that Japanese lunch boxes tend to be pretty thin and tightly packed to begin with. Even if the parent intended the banana to be part of the lunch as sort of a dessert (as fruits tend to be thought of), it wouldn’t fit in the lunch box and would have to be carried separately—like the snacks.

Vignette, of course, anticipated the question coming up and included it in the guide booklet.

She doesn’t actually use baby-talk here, but she does use the –ageru grammar point. Ageru means (several things but in this case) to give something. By attaching it to the end of another verb it becomes you doing that verb for somebody, with a nuance of doing it as a favor for them—which, depending on context, can be pretty condescending.

Satania uses that sort of language a lot when in Future-Ruler-of-Hell mode.

Specifically she says playing in the sand, not a general “out of the water.” Doesn’t really matter, but it foreshadows how serious she is about building that sandcastle later.

Here she says “umi no ie” (海の家), which literally is like “ocean house,” but actually refers to small scale restaurants on the beach that are generally only open seasonally. If you’ve seen a beach episode of an anime you’ve almost certainly seen one before.

As mentioned in an earlier episode note, the mai (舞) here is used for a verb that basically means descend with grace (舞い降りる), a la an angel descending from heaven or big fluffy snowflakes falling (it also means dance or float/hover). Ten (天) represents heaven.

西区 (Nishi-ku) is basically “western district,” which is appropriate enough, considering.

“Arara” is something people say when something bad/disappointing happens (usually when they are watching it happen to other people). “Machi” is just “town,” a common part of many place names.

Another example of oyakusoku. As soon as somebody is shown to have worn their swimsuit under their clothes, you know there will be some forgotten underwear joke coming up.

This looks like the torii at Miyajima, though there’s no bridge like that there.

Edit: It turns out this is Bentenjima, another fairly touristy place with a torii that is partially underwater during high tide.

As you can, the "-tenjima" part of the name is the same, the just swapped out the Ben for Mai. Benten, by the way, is an important goddess in Japan, and one of the seven lucky gods.

Guess what she says here?

Oyakusoku.

The little shrine on the left there is a common sight on the roadsides of Japan. The statues are generally of Jizou (or Ojizou-san/-sama as they are often called), the Japanese incarnation of a major bodhisattva. He’s a pretty cool guy who basically considers all life his responsibility and is mega kind and watches over everybody, and in Japan, especially children. There’s probably some connection between his shrines/statues being on all the roads and the fact that most kids in Japan walk to school unattended.

The red hat and bib are offerings put on them in prayer that one’s own children will grow up healthy and safe.

There’s also a famous folk tale regarding the hat. A kind old man travelled to town to try to sell five straw hats he and his wife had made, so he could buy some rice cakes for them to eat on New Year’s. Unfortunately nobody was buying though, so he left to return home. As he made his way back, he saw six Jizou statues being covered by the falling snow. Feeling bad for them, he wiped off the snow and gave the straw hats to five of the six, and his own cloth cap to the sixth. Later that night, the Jizou came to life and visited the old couple’s home, bringing with them a huge supply of rice as a gift.

There are several different versions, and this is a pretty summarized take on it, but that’s the gist.

You may be familiar with the “tadaima/okaeri“ tradition of greetings for when someone returns home. This is basically a similar deal except for when it’s a guest arriving, instead of someone who lives there: you say irasshai, they say ojama shimasu (though there are of course variant options for each).  In practice they’re just ritualized greetings, like “come on in” and “thanks for having me,” but in literal terms ojama shimasu basically means “I’m going to get in the way/cause you trouble.”

So Gabs is basically saying “I’m being a pain” repeatedly.

I saw a lot of people a little confused about this exchange, so just for clarity’s sake.

It basically boils down to:

Gaben: “Come on, surely you saw this coming.”

Vine: “Yeah, I guess I did.”

Garb: “Right? Now settle down and let me see your homework like a good girl.”

Viggo: “Wait, why are you acting like I’m the one being a child here!?”

The actual line here is “sasuga Vigne.” Sasuga is a super common word in conversational Japanese, that basically means “as expected [of someone/something].” Often it’s used as a compliment along the lines of “that’s our boy/girl!”, kind of a combination “wow you did it!” and “but we knew you would because you’re great!”

It doesn’t have to be complimentary though, it can be used in a sort of “there they go again…” way as well, or anything in between. Here, it’s basically like “I knew you wouldn’t let me down.”

Ironically, of all the places to squeeze an idiom or joke into the translation, this is one where it would have actually matched the Japanese.

The word she (doesn’t) use here is “naruhodo“, which is basically just “oh, I see/understand/get it.” It’s also Phoenix Wright’s Japanese name, eyy Naruhodo-kun.

What Gub says here instead is “naru~,” like she’s too lazy to finish saying the word.

This is a common(ish) way to compliment a girl’s looks, especially from one woman to another. Particularly someone who leans toward “cute” and who keeps their appearance neat (as in like, hair not wild, etc.).

Not everyone particularly enjoys it though, you can find people online asking “why do people say I look like a doll, are they calling me emotionless?” In theory though it’s purely a compliment.

The saying she uses here is “困った時はお互い様 (komatta toki wa otagai-sama).” It’s used when you’re helping out somebody in trouble and they thank you/apologize for being a burden, and basically means like “oh, you’d do the same for me” or “don’t worry about it, people gotta help each other out” (but not so informal-sounding).

A friend in need is a friend indeed, by my understanding of the phrase, is a little different. The “friend in need” part of it means a friend who is still your friend in your time of need, with the idea being “if somebody sticks with you through the hard times they must be a real friend.” So for Gabu to be using it when she’s helping out Vigneto kind of implies “yeah I’m your real friend,” which is not quite the original intent.

If social media usage ever becomes an Olympic sport which is truly not that unthinkable at the rate were moving there will be but one participant worthy of a gold medal: Boomer Phelps.

The one-year-old son of Olympic legend Michael Phelps and his wife,Nicole, first captured the hearts of America while cheering on his dad from the stands of the 2016 Rio Olympics in a massive pair of patriotic protective earmuffs.

Since then hes learned to walk, mastered the art of eating solid foods, and amassed an impressive 785K followers on Instagram, bringing pure, undeniable joy to timelines across the world.

In a troubling time where social platforms should come withopen at your own risk warnings, Mashable needed to know more about Boomer Phelps the sole beacon of light shining through the darkness of 2017 social media so we did the only logical thing: called his mom.

Nicole Phelps, 2010s Miss California USA and mother of the best baby on Instagram, gave us an inside look at all things Boomer, sharing the story behind his account and revealing who runs it, along with her son’s 2032 Olympic plans.

But most importantly, she confirmed what we already knew to be true: the kid is freaking adorable.

Here are a few of the many things we love about Boomer.

You know that saying, Like23-time Olympic gold medalist father, like son? Welp, its true. Boomer is just as obsessed with water as his dad.

Nicole says that for Boomer, it was love at first bath. “We learned at a very early age that was the best way to make Boomer relax, just to get him in the water, she said. It must run in the family. He loves the pool, he loves the bath, he loves taking showers any way he can get into the water hes happy.

Sure, Michael’s retired but lucky for us Boomer is just beginning.

Hes a star in the making

Think about it how often do we get to see a potential future Olympian grow up right before our eyes? And though we don’t know whether Boomer will follow in his father’s footsteps yet, his mom isn’t ruling out anything.

“Honestly, you never know. Boomer definitely seems to have a passion for the water,” she said.

The couple claim they aren’t pushing Olympic fame (really?), but Boomer seems pretty content splashing around.

Are they really just going to let this talent go to waste? “The most important thing that I think Debbie [Michael’s mom] did for Michael was just allow him to do what he wanted to do, so if Boomer does decide that 2032 is his year and hes gonna go for it then well back him 100 percent,” she said.

Still, Michael’s coach Bob Bowman who posts some precious pics of baby Phelps himself says Boomer definitely “has the kick.” And much like the rest of America, in Nicole’s eyes, the only thing cooler than Boomer in the Olympics would be if Ryan Lochte’s new baby boy, Caiden Zane, made the team, too.

“Oh my gosh, that would be so cute,” she said, laughing about the dream 2032 teammates. “It would be awesome.”

But if Boomer decides the athlete life isn’t for him, that’s fine. He already has another cool fallback … drumming. “We actually have a drum for him and hell sit there just drumming away with the wrist movements and everything,” Nicole said.

A drummer? Named Boomer? Does this get any better?

His appreciation of food could not be more relatable

Like all great Instagram personalities, Boomer isn’t shy about sharing food pics. He adores cheese (same) and gets extremely psyched for meal time, according to mom. “Hell sit in his high chair and he gets really excited and throws an arm up like hes riding a bull,” she said. “He rocks back and forth and just makes his entire high chair scoot across the floor.”

He cherishes the weekend as much as the rest of us

Sure, Boomers account is a hub of positivity, but this baby is not immune to longing for the weekend. Being the very relatable baby he is, Boomer loves to lounge around and get down on Friday. You can tell by this very attractive photo of him waiting for the week to be over.

Boomer is already using his platform to endorse products, and surprisingly, we don’t totally hate it. He’s partnering with Huggies Little Swimmers to teach water safety to everyone who doesn’t have the luxury of having a professional swimmer for a parent. So that basically means we’re in for a whole bunch of adorable Instagram videos of him and his dad in the pool.

He keeps things light and breezy

Boomer clearly loves life and that’s what makes his account so perfect. It’s literally just a happy, innocent little baby having a blast and with today’s online political brawls and insult-slinging troll armies, that’s pretty darn refreshing.

Nicole explained that we see a lot of negativity on social media these days, so she and Michael are doing their best to teach Boomer to find beauty in everyday life. “I think that our biggest thing is that we want people to smile when they see Boomer, and if that is where they find their light on a daily basis then so be it,” she said.

So whos the voice of Boomer’s Instagram?

It turns out Michael Phelps is running Instagram’s best account.

“Ill take all the pictures, send them to Michael, and then he talks for Boomer and posts,” Nicole explained. “He asked me if I wanted the password once and Im like, ‘Nope. I want nothing to do with it, this is all you.”

“It took on a life of its own that I dont think either of us really expected,” Nicole said about the account.

When Michael decided to do the first post as a way for family, friends, and fans to follow Boomer, he had nearly 2,000 followers. After the 2016 Olympic trials he surpassed 100,000 followers and kept going, leaving his own mother and Olympic athletes in his wake. “We always joke that were going to take this account away from him when he’s older and make him get his own followers.”

But doesn’t Nicole worry about thrusting her child into the spotlight? Apparently not.

Nicole said she and Michael knew they wanted to secure a handle for Boomer before he was born, simply because they didn’t want somebody else to have the power to post under his name.

“Weve gone back and forth whether or not its good or bad.”

“Weve gone back and forth whether or not its good or bad,” she explained, but ultimately the couple likes knowing they’re the ones posting shots of their son and can show fans that they’re a normal family living a normal life.

So how does Boomer’s following compare to his Instababy competition? Well, he’s sadly not in the lead, but we know the kid’s got potential. While other famous Instababies like Dream Kardashian (son of Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna) have already hit one million followers before age one, everyone knows deep down that quality of posts is more important than follower quantity.

So there you have it folks, definitive proof that Boomer is everything you need in an Instagram idol.
