the endless curse of being utterly uninterested in romance in fandom spaces
#one (1) ship im interested in and its being overshadowed by another entirely nonsensical ship too#but in general. UGH#i get obsessed with two characters bc i love their interactions and relationship and maybe they way theyve come to care about each other#and then all the posts (and fics) i see are like 'oh they should kiss lol' NO!! THEY SHOULD NOT!!!#have you never had a meaningful non-romantic relationship????#look at them!! theyre best friends!! theyre siblings!! whatever is going on with them is beyond normal relationships!!#just making them kiss immediately turns the entire concept so so so boring#like sometimes theres romance thats well-done but usually it discards everything else about the characters in question#like. theyre pining yay. what else. what about their unspoken but undying devotion to each other#what about their being trapped by the narrative together#what about the way theyre basically one entity and cant even tell where one ends and the other begins#what about their eternal loyalty that theyll never admit to anyone#what about the way they trust each other with every secret but dont even need to say anything out loud#what about the way this is the only person they feel safe and understood with#what about the unwilling bond forged through long travels#what about the beauty of friendship#noooo theyre just stupid pining idiots. kissy kiss kiss and its all done#friendship!! is!! amazing!!!! and more than enough!!!!!!#and with that other ship i see commonly why are you ignoring literally EVERY piece of symbolism in the og work UGH#like. no hate to avid shippers and enjoyers of romance#but i do not see the appeal#kissing is way overrated imo and then having all of my fav character dynamics being reduced to essentially Nothing#seeing super cool character dynamics being completely torn from the context and butchered into some pining#im so so so tired of it#a biscuit's rambles

as someone who used to be an intense shipper i’m just gonna say... it’s not fucking worth it.
i remember back when a:tla first came out, i was an avid zutara shipper. and i was CONVINCED that zutara was gonna happen. i would read essays and watch videos about the subtext and all the hidden clues and it was so obvious that zutara was going to happen. i surrounded myself in fandom by people who were also convinced it was going to happen. i was pretty young and gullible so i thought, “if so many people think zutara is going to be canon, and they’re presenting all this hidden evidence, then of course it’ll be canon.”
and you know what happened? it ended up ruining my enjoyment of the show. i was so obsessed with the idea of my ship becoming canon that the idea of them not getting together would literally upset me. i ended up not enjoying season 3 as much as i could have. i ended up not having a positive experience in that fandom because i was so involved in ship wars. i hated the finale because katara got with aang instead.
but like, 10+ years later as an adult, i look back at that show and i realize of course katara/aang were always gonna be endgame. the writers aren’t gonna spend this much time developing katara/aang as a romance and then hand the endgame over to two characters who never showed any interest in each other, no matter how many subtle hints the fans thought they saw. i can’t believe i ever thought zutara had a legitimate chance.
i’ve seen this same pattern repeat with other fandoms too. harry/hermione shippers believing they’d get together despite ron/hermione being developed for like seven books. st/erek shippers truly believing they were gonna get together even though they never shared any sort of romantic scene together. kl/ance shippers crying that if their ship doesn’t happen it’s queerbait despite them barely interacting.
as someone who’s been in fandom for a long ass time, if you have to look THAT deep into the subtext of your ship, it’s probably not gonna be canon. if you convince yourself that it is, you’re just hurting yourself in the end and setting yourself up for disappointment.
and that’s that.
