A 44 year old man goes to a K-Pop Concert

I promised you a report on the K-pop concert that I, a 44-year-old accountant, went to a couple of weeks ago with my wife and daughter in Toronto. So here it is.

The band we saw were Ateez. They're my daughter's favourite band and my wife's second favourite. I know most of my mutuals are similarly aged like me and may not be familiar with them so let me give you a brief primer on Ateez.

Imagine the most attractive eight men you can think of, just unfathomably beautiful specimens of aesthetic perfection, and make them sing songs that somehow combine the subjects of 'dancing like nobody is watching' with 'we live in a dystopian hellscape that we must all work together to overthrow'. Give them an ongoing music video story lore that literally nobody - not even the band themselves - understand, so that online discussion of their visual motifs looks more like the fevered rantings of a conspiracy theorist, complete with speculation about alternate realities and time being a Moebius strip. There is also a giant sand timer, for some reason.

That's Ateez. That's what you need to know.

Now, K-pop concerts are very different to the gigs I've been going to for the last 28 (!) years. There's no support act, for a start. Also the band perform for like, three hours, with breaks for costume changes and interpretive dance. Furthermore, hanging above everything is the constant looming threat of mandatory military service.

So this being my first such concert, I wasn't sure what to expect. What happened was difficult to explain, but I will try as I am already six paragraphs into this write-up and I'm too invested to stop now. Here goes:

In his Wicked + Divine comics series, Kieron Gillen places modern pop icons as deities, feeding upon and gaining strength from the worship of their fans at the altar of musical performance. I thought I understood that metaphor. I thought I understood it AS a metaphor. I was wrong, because that night Ateez WERE Gods with a capital G and we were their worshippers, a crowd emanating adoration (in the religious and non-religious senses), bestowing strength upon them and gaining their strength in return.

If that sounds weird, it probably is. But as pointed out above, I have lived over four decades and never yet experienced anything like the overwhelming passion of that crowd, the utter abandon with which they conveyed their love for the band.

"But Fuiru, what of the actual music?" you ask. Thinking back, there was a moment in one of their songs - I can't remember which - where I watched the stage, and the people around me, taking it in, and I thought, "Man, I just love Music". But that doesn't answer your question, sorry.

Ateez's music is bloody great. As a tiresome indie/rock/metal kid I'm resisting the urge to add the usual tiresome indie/rock/metal caveat of "...for pop music" because honestly that does it a disservice. They have some genuinely amazing songs. Halazia is an absolute fucking masterpiece that descends into furious hardcore breakbeat. Bouncy is a big, brash racket that somehow is also a perfect pop song. Utopia, Wonderland, and Guerrilla are similarly superb. The obligatory boy band slow number is represented by Dancing Like Butterfly Wings which will make you cry because you will forever associate it with your twelve year old daughter being pointed to and waved at by her favourite Ateez member (Seonghwa) because of her Seonghwa-branded lightstick.

That might just be me, though.

So in summary: being a 44 year old dad at his first K-pop concert rules and you should endeavour to partake in the experience if the opportunity arises.

Finally, for any Atiny reading this: my bias would be San or Seonghwa but my wife and daughter said they were taken so it’s Mingi. My concert outfit (designed and created by my offspring) reflects this.

Back stiffening firmly and upright, you grip onto the base of the barstool for support in response to the immediacy of the events occurring in front of you. All you have are your four other senses, the shroud covering your eyes prohibiting your ability to see the situation occurring on the vacant barstool. 

Straining to hear the circumstances sealing your fate, a fistful of berry flung itself deep into the glass jar beside you as the individual laughed enthusiastically. A high pitched voice called out in front of you, behind the individual who sat themselves down at your booth.

“You’re gonna spend your allowance here?” the angry, feminine voice called, “I thought you’d spend it on meat, Luffy!” Your guest laughed a playful snickered hiss through their teeth in response before gently reaching forward and clasping their hand around your wrist. 

"Robin said she's payin' for dinner tonight," the voice called out over their shoulder, "And I wanna have a kiss! How cool is this? It's like they're here just for me!" You were taken aback by their enthusiasm, but attempted to collect yourself to remain as professional as one can be sitting on a booth made for kissing.

Your brows sprung up to the middle of your forehead as your eyes attempted to widen behind the mask to no avail. Expecting your lips to be immediately ravished and tainted by the mouth belonging to your guest, their actions seemed to halt as they gently rub a circle on your wrist with their thumb.

“Can I kiss you now?” his voice gently coaxed you in closer, “I just wanna make sure before I do. Don’t wanna do somethin’ you’re not comfy with or nothin’.” You cocked your head inquisitively to the side, a slow smile drawing up your features in response to his inquisition of your consent.

“You paid your Berry?” you asked him, prompting him to hum a huffed "mhmm" in affirmation. You grinned wider, adding a soft humming, “Then, I’m all yours.” He chuckled again in response, scooting the stool in closer towards you.

“Oh, that’s great!” you felt his hand travel up to cup your neck and draw you in closer, “Right, I’m goin’ in!”

That was all the warning you had before his lips eagerly sought out your own. He hummed in glee, his smile physically plastered against each skillful oscillation he drew against your mouth. He angled his chin in a soft circle, parting his lips and tasting your mouth with his tongue. Brushing against your own, he swirled the morsel within your mouth and retracted it to deepen his sultry and hungry kisses. 

You were shocked at the intensity of his lips, but you kept up with every inch of his passion and matched his energy with ease. Gently reaching out your hands, he caught your wrist and drew it up to place against his shoulder while slipping closer towards you. His eagerness and enthusiasm never ceased with each passing moment. 

His lips were partially chapped, his mouth tasting a combination of sweet and savory from the last assuming barbequed meat he consumed. He snickered into the kiss, slowly hooking his arms around your neck and coaxing you to leave the stool and join him on his feet. 

“Luffy!” the voice again called behind him, “You can’t take them with you. They have to stay here!” 

The individual pouted against your lips before growling in agitation, eagerly consuming your lips with a hungrier desperation than moments prior. The voice behind him again called out to you both.

“Luffy,” she sounded irritated, her sigh falling from her lips the longer yours were attached to this so called ‘Luffy’, “Zoro is still missing. Can we go get him? You can come back if they’re still here?” The person growled into your mouth, prompting you to laugh into his lips. 

Finally breaking away, his hand gently caressed your cheek before his thumb caressed your bottom lip. Your lips parted in response, and you heard his breath exhale another soft snicker. 

“I’m Monkey D Luffy,” he uttered in a soft, husky voice, “I’m gonna be king of the pirates some day.” You nod in response, your grin again growing and revealing your teeth at him. He huffed out a soft growl in response.

“Come find us at the end of the pier when your shift is done,” he ordered softly at you, gently caressing your hand and giving your fingers a gentle squeeze, “I’m the one in the straw hat, red vest, and likely eating a piece of meat.” 

“I’ll find you, Monkey D Luffy,” you nod do him in confirmation, scrunching your nose playfully, and wave him off as he goes to find whoever ‘Zoro’ must be. He snickers at you in response, waving at you before looking between his hand and your eye covering: noticing you'd likely not see him do it.

Annoyed. That's all he feels. Grusha knows the deal when it comes to being well-known and famous. He was just like that before the accident. However, seeing your fans swarm around you while the two of you are out makes him remember that oh, yeah, that was certainly a thing. Don't people have some amount of decency? Can't they leave someone alone for a few minutes? He hates how it looks like they're treating you like some...object. He doesn't know how much he can take it. There are some genuine fans out there, but oh, he's not annoyed by them. It's the weirdos his concern and bitterness is centered towards. They make him absolutely sick. He doesn't voice any of this out, but you can sure feel his irritation at a certain distance. Just, you know...make sure he's okay since we wouldn't want an accident on the news, don't we?

Just like Grusha, he's also annoyed by these fans. Like yeah, there's Team Yell with Marnie but that's her hype team more than anything. These people, though, are so bothersome and he can't help but bring that up sometimes in conversation. If you're actually bothered by them, then great! He'll gladly tell them to bug off when necessary. Hell, you can even come to Spikemuth to hide for a while. Not many people come around anyways, so it's a good place for some alone time. Besides that, Piers is supportive of your career if it's something you're passionate about. Especially if you're a singer/songwriter. As someone who is one himself, he's alright with giving advice and offering a hand. Team Yell can act as bodyguards if you want. Their demeanor would drive excessive fans away and that's something he wants. A benefit to handing advice to you is that he had the opportunity to give small bouts of misinformation to scare you a little. It just helps to keep you leaning onto him for support. I mean, who else could relate? I know what you're thinking: this sounds rather okay. Because it's the way Piers wants it to be. Even as a yandere, he doesn't want unnecessary conflict or trouble. It's rather annoying. Oh, but make no mistake; he's willing to drag any creep into a dark alley to ensure they are never able to hold a paper and pen ever again.

Petrel is rather chill about this. Hell, he even disguises as various people who are 'fans' of yours. Example: you're at a convention with fans and it's going well. Everyone is so sweet and endearing. What you don't notice is that Petrel had approached you multiple times as different people just to see how you react with various individuals. He can never get tired of this. It's entertaining to see that adorable face of yours greet him as if you're meeting for the first time over and over. Little did you know... This man does buy some of your merch, he does but...he wants something personal. These items are more centered around your career, and that's fine and all, but he wants stuff that are closer to you as a person. Rummaging through your stuff was easy. You really need more competent bodyguards, darling. That's fine, he'll just play the part as one of them for you. He wants to chuckle at the way you don't notice anything off with him. An expert in his craft after all. Plus, why would you question anyone who's your bodyguard?

First of all, he looks hot here, second of all, let's start off with gender. He wouldn't care about gender honestly, if the person is attractive, they're attractive. And he just wants to love someone, and someone to love him, so gender doesn't matter to him. I see him as demi-bisexual, and if person he finds attractive is gender fluid, it's literally like a jackpot to him.

Now, body type, like gender, he doesn't really care about it, and he isn't picky with it. He doesn't mind chubbiness, he loves it instead, he finds curves really cute and attractive and just wants to squeeze and kiss that stomach and thighs, or either lay on them, or chest, he'd see them as teddy bear and pillow. At the same time he doesn't mind skinny as well, he finds it attractive and gorgeous too, that thin waist just looks so holdable and squeezable oh and huggable as well, loves those skinny boney hands he wants to hold them and wants them to be his necklace, he would see that person as model literally. Just as long as person isn't anorexic you know? He doesn't want beautiful person to go through extreme health problems, like being too much underweight or too much overweight to the point they barely walk. But he also finds athletic body types attractive as well, he finds it hot really. He would be more than happy and honored to work out with them. Seeing that muscles, he just feels like touching biting and licking them, he wants to be held and picked up, but secretly and privately of course ;). He would love that strong arms being wrapped around his neck/waist, or he would imagine his head between that person's strong thighs omg.

For heights...like for body and gender, he doesn't give a shit about it. Shorter than him? He finds it cute and just wants to mess with their hair and pick that person up, snuggle them and tease them. Taller than him? Oh he would melt and sweat when they would look down on him, he finds it hot when attractive person towers over him, would imagine forehead kisses and burying his head in their chest. Same height as him? He finds it attractive too, and perfect. He would think hugging, kissing and cuddling with that person would be like two puzzles going together perfectly. No offense but I feel he would prefer a little more person being same height as him or taller than him. It's that submissive side in him that craves for it, I see him as switch honestly. Depending on his mood of course, but I can picture him being a bit more submissive. So yeah he would love if person he finds attractive was a switch too but a bit more dominant.

I don't know why, but I also feel like he would find smoking/smell of cigarettes attractive in person too for some reason. Of course, he doesn't want person he likes to be a heavy smoker now and destroy themselves too much. But he would like the smell on their clothes for sure..I don't know if it's just me but yeah I just feel like it. When he would watch the person he likes smoke, he'd wish he was that cigarette they're holding and putting in their mouth, he wants to be that close to their lips just like that cigarette.

Tomura would prefer introverted person, I mean it's obvious. Because he's introverted as well, but he wouldn't mind ambiverted person too (between extrovert and introvert/or just balanced).

He would want someone supportive, caring, understanding. Someone honest, determined and passionate, someone that would have his back and be at his worst and best times. Someone that he can be himself around them, that won't judge him for who he is, that would love him for who he is.

He likes people with strength, both physical and mental, emotional and moral strength. He wants someone intelligent and witty, someone that can be mature and serious, and at the same time childish and unserious, someone that is good at finding balance and really shows that they are capable of understanding a diverse range of emotions, and that they can handle all those different feelings appropriately, rather than letting them control them. It would be very attractive trait to him.

He would also find attractive some sass and attitude, it shows that someone is independent and not afraid to speak their mind. It's important to him to have some spice in relationship, but it's also important to balance that with sweetness and kindness. Tomura would appreciate someone who is bold and not afraid to speak their mind, it shows confidence, and he would find it hot. Anyone strong, anyone who can stand firm in the face of danger, who knows what they want and has guts to go for it. Someone that can be goofy and fun, who doesn't take themselves too seriously and can see humour in things, bonus point if they have dark/childish/dirty humor, he would want someone that would make him laugh even when you know the world is coming to an end. Those that can be that but aren't afraid to be serious when they have to. He values confidence but also value humility, you could say that his type is kind of balanced.

Tomura would be into someone sarcastic and teasing, I feel like he would be into loving and out of joke insulting. Someone a little sassy, and with an attitude he would find that attractive for sure and hilarious, probably exciting as well. As long as they don't take themself way too seriously.

He wants someone calm and collected but at the same time a bit aggressive. He would find it really fascinating to see someone calm and collected go to a little bit aggressive and assertive. He would love someone who has a little bit of wild side and isn't afraid to show it. There's certain amount of aggression that can be attractive, like I said he'd like someone passionate and intense so if that extends to their aggression... it's definitely something he would find hot. As long as they're not overly aggressive or volatile, it can be really hot to have someone who's more intense and passionate about things. It shows him there's more to a person than the calm side that they show most of the time, and that there's a darker side to them too that they're comfortable letting out when it's needed. I feel like he would find that kind of exciting and a bit of a turn on. And yeah, he's probably into aggressive kissing/make out as well than 💀. But of course he would love gentle and sweet too.

Now for looks, oh he definitely loves more alternative looks in general. He would love those that can embrace the darkness, and who can see the beauty that lies within it. He adores punk/goth/emo/anything dark literally. Probably goth the most though, he's just dragged/attracted more into it. But yeah he finds darker style really beautiful 🦇. You know how I said he prefers more someone same height or taller than him? If person is same height as him and wears platform shoes and boots it's extra points, because they can tower over him sometimes and be same height as him sometimes too.

Plus he would find piercings and tattoos so so attractive for suree, black hair or any other darkish color. They can show individuality and personal expression. He would find tattoos as work of art definitely, and would definitely want to trace them on person he finds attractive. And piercings can be used for self expression, he's into all that 100% 🙏.

Since I mentioned dark style, he would like person who is into dark music as well too, rock/metal/indie/goth/post punk anything that's on darker side. And of course, he'd like someone that can listen to all sorts of different genres, styles and artists because it makes for a broad and interesting tastes he can relate to. Anything but country music <3.

Now for interests, Tomura would love someone who is into art and media, horror, gore and dark stuff. He would love someone who's creative and passionate about things like film, music, painting/drawing... He would find it really attractive to see someone who has eye for beauty or aesthetics on more artistic level.

And last thing, about affection and love language, he'd want someone that isn't much into PDA. He would like to be more touchy with person he likes in private and not in public for sure. I mean he finds hand holding, small and quick kiss and hugging in public alright, but other stuff...yeah no. He'd like someone with mixed love languages or different ways of showing affection like psychical affection, words of affirmation, gift giving, quality time, and I know I already mentioned this one but insulting in loving and joking way too. I just know he's extremely touch starved and hungry for affection and love.

It feels like America looked at people like me and everyone else who even just vaguely doesn't fit the white cishet social requirements and expectations and went "Fuck you."

Almost every man I'm related to has served this country in one way or another via the military. Mostly through the army, but sometimes through the other branches, too. I was raised to be very patriotic, to be proud to be an American. I grew up celebrating every single American-centered holiday there is here. I grew up wearing red, white and blue, singing God Bless America, watching the fireworks and celebrating being free.

Apparently, I grew up lied to.

I can't be proud to be an American when people left and right are being stripped of the basic freedoms that aren't courtesies given by the government, but a necessities for human life. Healthcare, housing, food, shelter, reproductive rights and so many more I can't even begin to fathom the length of the list let alone write it all out here, should not be up for debate. And yet here in America, every four years, those very issues are on the ballot, asking if we've grown in our mindsets, begging us to know that people are people regardless of gender, race, sexuality, national origin, disability, ethnicity, culture, religion, or class. And yet we answer, "No they're not," and have outcomes like this.

I'm tired of an America that would rather have a convinced felon who has fucked us over before over a woman of color with every qualification be our president.

I'm tired of an America that continues to see women, people of color, and other minority groups as somehow lesser than the white cishet male standard that dominates our government.

I'm tired of an America where people would rather see others suffer at the hands of those who should be supporting and uplifting the people than expand their own viewpoints and empathy.

I'm tired of this being the America that I was raised to love.

It's okay to be tired, lost, scared, confused, hurt and grieving. I know I am. But while these next four years will undoubtedly be hard for most of us, we can and will get through it. We'll do it together, fighting for each other and trying to support, love and uplift one another in the face of a government who couldn't care less.

I'm not proud to be an American, but I am proud of the people who will walk away from this result today with a new passion and sense of justice not just for themselves, but for their friends, family, and neighbors, known and unknown. I'm proud of the people who will stand strong and keep fighting. I'm proud of the people who will keep living after this, going on in life despite the setbacks. It's a beautiful "fuck you" to the powers that be.

So, I see a lot of people worried or freaking out about how about Louis's story arc and how they're gonna use Jacob on season 3... Here are my two cents on it: Louis is a leading character on the series. Jacob is the first name on the credits. He's not going anywhere. He has a contract. I doubt anyone in this fandom that has no ties to him/Rolin/AMC really knows the specifics of his contract. And even if his contract ended and he decided to not renew it, the show would probably be shortened and end sooner because it's written in a way that is totally tied to Louis and Lestat as individuals and a pairing (and usually Claudia and their family dynamic too). They wouldn't suddenly reinvent the story to have another character taking Louis's role on the story and I believe with all my heart they would never dare to recast Jacob.

Sure, there are other characters that are fleshed out, have lives and relationships of their own, but ultimately all roads come back to them. It's built this way. When they map out the beginning, conflict, peak and conclusion of every season, it's always about them in a way. Season 1: the church scene, the fight, the murder attempt, Daniel confronting Louis, the "Armand is the love of my life" moment. Season 2: Louis and Claudia's saga in Europe and his promise to her, Louis being betrayed and kidnapped with Claudia, Lestat's return, the trial that included the three of them, the reunion. It all circles back to them.

There will be flashbacks of Lestat with Armand, Gabrielle, Nicholas, Magnus etc, but there will definitely be some flashbacks with Louis and probably Claudia too. There can be fantasy sequences with Lestat imagining Louis. And obviously there will be things in the present as well. The "I own the night" scene is not an exit moment, Louis is finally acknowledging and coping with his grief and embracing vampirism. That's not a conclusion, if anything, that's a new beginning, a rebirth, a fresh start. And even if Louis and Lestat have completely separated stories, they'll still be connected and build to a big moment for both of their arcs just like season 2. I mean, the new song is totally about Louis and that should be another sign that Louis will always be fundamental to the show.

I know Louis gets sidelined in the books, but that doesn't stop Rolin from using him. There are stories he can take from other characters and give to him and he can write completely new stuff himself. In fact, a lot of writers adapting existing stories love that because they can still come up with something original and surprise people. When you know how a story ends, things can get predictable and boring pretty fast, so many writers love using minor/original characters that allow them to have freedom, use their creativity and keep things fresh.

Jacob making music shouldn't be a problem, because he has balanced his music and acting career before. If anything, I see it as a good sign. He has an acting job he loves, plays a character really close to his heart, that even helps him find catharsis with personal aspects of his life and that job still lets him accommodate his other passion. If he had to dedicate all his waking moments to the show and not be able to do anything else, then chances of him wanting to walk way would probably be higher. But he doesn't have to choose, he gets to do both.

When it comes to the interview people are using as argument, I'm not trying to tell anyone how to feel, but I personally wouldn't take it too literally. They're giving a lot of interviews recently, sometimes they do many on the same day, people can end up expressing themselves poorly, specially if they're tired. And the interview is transcript, so who knows if they transcript exactly what he said with the full context (because I've seen awful and even offensive mistakes with other people before).

And even if he did mean that Jacob will play a supporting role, that doesn't equal being permanently reduced to a supporting role. Lestat temporarily played more of a supporting role on season 2 and he's still a leading character overall, it was just because the story was centering Louis's interview and his time in Paris. With season 3, he's back as a lead and shown for the first time as an actual individual, not the fragmentation of someone's memory. I personally believe Louis will stay as a leading character, but in case he doesn't, he will definitely be a supporting character that remains a key part of the story. And eventually go back to his status as a co-lead. At the end of the show, Louis and Lestat will be the center of the story and Jacob and Sam will be the co-leads with the largest screen time.

ADDING: Just remembered that Smallville, which was an adaptation of the Superman comics, had an original main character (Chloe Sullivan) that stayed for 10/10 seasons. In fact, she was the character that appeared the most after Clark Kent/Superman himself, even more than actual characters from the comics like Lex Luthor, Lois Lane, Lana Lang, Jimmy Olsen, Zodd etc. Everyone left the show at some point, or was introduced later, but Clark and Chloe were the only constant of the series. If I remember it correctly, the show had 217 episodes and she appeared on 206 of them. It's perfectly possible to work this out. This really shouldn't be a problem at all and I'm sure Rolin is smart and creative enough to pull that off. Other shows and movies have done it before.

Eloquent Disagreements: Legolas and his elf s/o have a fair share of passionate disagreements, especially in the beginning. Anyway, Legolas would often find himself speechless, because they don't mince their words and says what they really think, over time he gets used to it and likes it a little bit more, especially since he can't afford to speak like them as the Prince of Mirkwood .

Archery Lessons: One way Legolas tries to bridge the gap between their personalities is by offering archery lessons. He's patient as he teaches them, finding solace in the shared moments at the archery range. (They might not be too good in archery, but have a very unique and stunning way to handle their sword.)

Language: They're known for their sometimes rude language, (which Gimli secretly appreciates). Legolas would just shake his head from time to time, but secretly thinking that it's kind of brave.(Legolas understands that this is their way of expressing emotions. He appreciates the sincerity behind their words and actions.)

Revealing Their Feelings: Eventually, it's them who reveals their feelings first, unable to contain their affection any longer. Legolas is taken by surprise but soon reciprocates with their own heartfelt admission. (They would say it in a very untypical way for an elf, maybe even curse, after Legolas has put himself in unnecessary danger, and pull him into a tight embrace in an unelvish way)

Surprise and Stunned Silence: Legolas is initially taken completely by surprise. He's used to elven decorum and the more reserved expressions of affection, so their outburst catches him off guard.

Conflicting Emotions: He experiences a whirlwind of emotions in that moment - surprise, confusion, but mostly a deep warmth in his heart.

S/o: "Damn! By the stars, Legolas! What were you thinking you fool, charging in like that? I thought I lost you, stupid elf!" They exclaim, their voice laced with worry and frustration, a slip of affectionate concern coloring their words. They immediately pull him in a tight embrace Legolas: His eyes widen in surprise at their outburst, the genuine worry in their tone catching him off guard. "I... Hair: He'd let them play with his hair, but don't expect them to braid it, since they can't do it and it would just get tangled (Legolas tried to teach them, but gave up after several attempts.) However he would sometimes braid their hair, if they asked him, tho they mostly like to keep it open

Can get behind supporting small, local business, especially if these business belong to someone like you. Assuming that the two of you have known each other, they can rely on their cutesy clothes and dazzling accessories mostly coming from you.

Tends to feel guilty about making you work extra hard, even if its technically your job, they can't help but feel a bit of a burden when they pop their head into the store and see you hunched over your desk working hard. Only to tap you on the shoulder and smile sheepishly as they hold up, yet, another design that they sketched themself.

As sweet as they can be, they're also a little demanding and can get bossy at times. Not intentional, it's a bit out of instinct considering they get into a lot of crap with their younger brother all the time which would lead to them having to look after him all the time and to take care of him. Guess olderly sibling instincts kick hard.

Knows that they can trust you. At times you catch them staring at you for a second before smirking to themselves and make sly comments here and there that almost makes you sew your fingers together. Though, if you attempt to reciprocate those comments back to them, they'll be nervous.

In the events that lead up to the two of you dating, Dragona treats you like they'd do normally only in this case was much more affectionate and touchy with their hands. Instead of leaning over the counter or peering over your shoulder to wonder what you're doing, they place a hand on your back with their front touching your arms or they'd wrap an arm around you and give you a small kiss to your cheek before saying anything.

It's fairly easy to get them presents for birthdays and other special ocassions. Even at the moments where you just wanted to surprise them with a new outfit you've made specifically for them.

Of course, with all the hardwork and labor you put in to your passion, the rare times you'll have the time to teach Dragona a few of the techniques and basic sewing skills to stitch fabrics together. Surprisingly they're a fast learner and it's a really nice bonding experience that the two of you share and it's so sweet that it even makes Jodio roll his eyes anytime he stops by with Dragona.

Tbh I'm at a point where I think everyone should write whatever they want forever and we shouldn't worry about Mary Sues. Who cares, let's have fun in the sandbox

I agree, everyone should write what they want! It is ultimately an act of passion, and everyone has total creative liberty over what they produce.

However, not all writing is intended to be interacted with the same way.

A work of fanfiction or an original story that someone shares for free is different, for example, than a book you have to buy or a film you have to pay to watch. The purpose of reviews for products are not just to support the author, but to guide other prospective readers and viewers about how they'll spend their money and time.

As an author, there's also a difference between a hobbyist and a professional. I'm both! I write for fun, and I've published writing for money. I also have an MFA in Creative Writing.

I would consider it rude if someone offered unsolicited criticism of writing or art I made available for free, but when a paying publisher accepts my stories, I expect them to offer edits to make it as good as it can be for the consumption of the public.

Similarly, if I were in a critique session with my MFA peers, I'd be annoyed if they told me to just have fun without offering any other feedback. As you can see, the context changes whether writing is appropriate to criticize, and whether criticisms should be expected.

Hollywood studios should also be held to an especially high standard, I think, because of the amount of money that is channeled into funding their films, and the amount of money they charge from the public.

Now, about the term Mary Sue.

Many already know that "Mary Sue" is a satirical term, originating in a parody fanfiction from a Star Trek fan magazine, and I don't think it was ever meant to be treated as a serious literary criticism. There's also a male equivalent - the Gary Stu - but it's seldom used, and the term remains disproportionately geared towards female characters.

I don't dislike characters because they're "Mary Sues," I dislike characters because they're poorly written. And I have a pet peeve when a portion of the internet reactively claims a character is well-written simply to defend them from accusations of being a Mary Sue.

Again, this is usually in regards to big budget Hollywood movies or shows, like Captain Marvel, the 2016 Ghostbusters, She-Hulk, or what have you. The criticisms against these movies were often bad, and came from misogynistic viewpoints - but that doesn't mean these movies and shows are good. And I would have been doing myself a disservice if I overlooked their flaws simply because misogynists also didn't like them.

I think Hollywood studios often hide behind superficially strong female characters to shield themselves from criticism, and avoid having to write female characters who are actually original, complex, and interesting.

(Again, this is all just my opinion. Anyone is welcome to like the above properties! I like tons of things that could be considered questionable.)

So, to conclude: yes, everyone deserves to have fun with writing! It is usually inappropriate and rude to offer unsolicited criticism of art that is available for free. But Hollywood films and traditionally published writing that we pay money to access are not the same as free art that's shared only for passion and fun.

And last but not least, calling a character a Mary Sue is usually a stupid criticism, but not every character who is accused of being a Mary Sue is a good character!

Just my thoughts on the matter, which I'm obviously more than eager to babble about for a good half hour.

‘We don’t want to be a pop band’

A multi-platinum album, songs sung by football crowds - it's all rosy for the Fratellis. Not that they think so, they tell Caroline Sullivan

It's late afternoon outside Amsterdam's Paradiso club, and the small group of teenagers hanging around on the steps have just seen something to get excited about. "Jon!" a girl calls, as Fratellis singer Jon Lawler - Jon Fratelli when he's on stage - appears from around the side of the building, on his way to soundcheck for that night's show. The girl and two friends detach themselves from the others and scramble over to Lawler, whose skinny frame and halo of curls say "pop star" as surely as if he were toting around a platinum disc.

"Jon, can you do us a favour?" When Lawler nods indulgently, she continues: "Could you send the support band out?"

After an instant's bemused silence, he echoes: "The support band?"

"We really want to meet them," she explains.

"I'll see what I can do," he tells her and walks off, shaking his head as if he can't believe it. This must be one of the times when Lawler wonders whether selling 1.5m copies of the Fratellis' debut album, Costello Music, actually means anything. For every true believer who sings their songs at football matches and crams into venues to see them, there seems to be someone else who would rather meet the support band. Or, worse, is a critic who regards the group as beery louts.

There are reams of reviews, both for Costello Music and their new album, Here We Stand, that portray the Glasgow band as yobs making music for yobs. Like it or not (and they don't), the Fratellis have been designated this era's custodians of the oik-rock tradition. So Lawler and his bandmates, bassist Barry Wallace and drummer Gordon "Mince" McRory, are in an odd position. On the one hand, they're a proper pop phenomenon: Scotland's biggest group, winners of the 2007 Brit award for British Breakthrough Act, inescapable to anyone who watches football (Chelsea Dagger has become the nation's terrace chant of choice) and all-round band of the people. But on the other, they're reviled by many for the very reasons others love them. And that greatly annoys Lawler, who, as the middle-class son of two teachers, probably has more in common with the Fratellis' critics than with the people who buy their records.

"You can't pick your fans, can you?" he asks, having settled himself at an outdoor table overlooking the canal that runs behind the Paradiso. "But we're grateful to have fans. And I think when people describe us as a band to get drunk to, or a party band, it shows you how out of fashion rock'n'roll is. We get described as a pub band, but that's what rock'n'roll is. Twist and Shout was three chords and 'C'mon, c'mon, c'mon' - it was nonsensical. But that was why it was effective."

Lawler's passion is melody; he wants to write songs that postmen whistle and football crowds chant and radio stations keep on rotation. "People don't trust melody," he says. "I've always been a huge fan of the Beatles and Pink Floyd, people who use melody. I don't understand dance music. Melody, a tune - it's primal."

Is that what accounts for those 1.5m sales? He laughs softly. "I don't know the complex answer, but the simple answer is that a good band will get an audience. I knew as soon as we started to play together that we had it, 'cos I'd listened to the radio and it was all Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party, and I knew from the first minute that this was the one that was going to work. There was a click, and I knew."

His instincts were spot-on. Brought together in 2004 by an ad posted in a Glasgow music shop, the trio played their first gig early in 2005. By the end of 2006, they had a No 2 album. Lawler was then 27 and had been around the block several times, working by day at a Ministry of Defence call centre - most of his wages went to his ex-wife, who he'd married as a teenager, and their son - and writing songs at night. Wallace and McRory were similarly dividing their lives between day jobs and nighttime music "careers" (the new song Shameless draws attention to the fact that many of their competitors are "half as old as I am" and seem "younger every night", though Lawler claims to be unfazed by the prospect of turning 30 next year).

The initial media coverage was adulatory, but the Fratellis reacted as if the media were a particularly pesky fly. In early interviews, they sulked, fabricated stories (their Wikipedia entry still lists Fratelli as their common surname, as per their lie that they'd all dropped their real names and adopted it) and failed to charm. "[The press] did dance around us for the first few months," Lawler acknowledges, making it clear that he hadn't been happy about it. Eventually, though, the press got the message: the Fratellis didn't like them. They responded in kind. "Lots of the bands we love, like Zeppelin and Floyd, were also hated by the press," Lawler says with an air of quiet vindication. "We did two cardinal sins with the press: we took the piss, then stopped talking to them."

Despite the chippiness, Lawler is very likable. He's articulate and introspective - in contrast to colleague Barry, who whiles away the pre-soundcheck minutes by showing a group of roadies that he can insert a lit cigarette into his belly-button and "smoke" it - and admits he's not a natural frontman. "I'm introverted by nature. I'd give it to Mince in a flash, 'cos he's got that exuberance." Well, there's a revelation, since Mince doesn't do interviews or photos, and today is out visiting Amsterdam's famous coffee shops.

Seeing himself as a lyrics-and-tunes man rather than a performer, Lawler now confesses that he doesn't think much of Costello Music. "I agreed with some critics about it. There was a decent percentage of it that I didn't like. It has a pop sheen, and we don't want to be a pop band." He's much happier with Here We Stand, which the band insisted on producing themselves. "The only reference people had for us was the first album, and that really bugged me. That's why we didn't use a producer on this, 'cos we didn't want anybody else getting their hands on it. It was the album I was desperate to make, and I think it'll change a lot of opinions."

A tiny spider chooses this moment to appear on the table. When he sees it, he blanches and hastily moves to another seat. "I'm scared of spiders," he says, mildly embarrassed, which leads to an anecdote about his wife phoning him on tour in Munich a few days ago to announce timorously that she had found a spider in their house, and what should she do? Mrs Lawler is a key character in the Fratellis' story, a burlesque dancer whose stage name was Chelsea Dagger, she was the inspiration for the band's signature hit. "Her name was a play on Britney Spears. I remember the night I wrote it - I found the notebook with the lyrics the other night. It came to me really quickly. I was going [sings the familiar refrain] 'Do-do-do-do-do-do' and it was so easy to write that I couldn't believe nobody had ever used [the melody] before."

He is, however, much more satisfied with the music on Here We Stand, which, unlike most second albums, is not much concerned with the experience of suddenly being famous. "I don't like to reveal too much or pour out my heart and soul, but I'm really proud of the lyrics on this album. When I hear them, I smile to myself and think I've done some good work. I'm really proud of a line in Shameless: 'Won't you make sure my mother gets half my weight in gold/ Tell her I just did what I was told.'"

He sits back and waits for my reaction. "Hmm," I say. He goes on: "If someone else had written that, I'd have been really jealous." But is he as pleased with Here We Stand's first single, Mistress Mabel, which is a load of rhyming gibberish ("Headline ratbag, so they told her/ Last night's nametag across her shoulder") set to mid-tempo pub-rock? He isn't. "Mistress Mabel is absolutely the worst lyrics I've ever written. I'd had the song for ages and just couldn't think of lyrics that meant anything to me."

Later, the Fratellis provoke the same reaction from their Dutch audience as they would from a British crowd: it's all unbridled dancing, singalongs and a sweaty sense of fraternity. The band's manager, Tony McGill, watches with me. Chelsea Dagger, of course, spurs the place into a frenzy of churning hands and feet, and McGill is shouting. It's hard to hear him, but he's saying something about the tune having been used as the theme to a Dutch TV show. Which seems about right. Pop like this is universal, and the Fratellis have earned their place in the pantheon of British groups who move crowds by hitting them with songs that they'll be singing all the way home.

Okay so spicy rant because I keep seeing stuff over here and in fandoms and I need to say something 💀

You know what REALLY grinds my gears? People who take it upon themselves to discourage writers, whether they're experienced authors or roleplayers just trying to have some fun. What is it with these self-appointed gatekeepers who think it's their sacred duty to trash anyone else's creative efforts? It's like they've got nothing better to do than sit on their high horses, casting judgment on everything they see, never lifting their pinkies to do anything.

First off: these so-called "critics" who love to bash writing prompts. "This again?" "This prompt is so cliché" Oh, excuse me for daring to use a prompt that’s been around the block a few dang times. Newsflash: originality isn't about finding a prompt no one's ever heard of. It's about what you do with it. If a writer finds inspiration in something that sparks their creativity, who are you to sneer at it? Just because you think it's been "overused" doesn't mean it can't produce something unique and worthwhile.

Guess what, genius? Every single story, from the dawn of storytelling, builds on something that came before. There are no new ideas, only new ways of telling them. If someone wants to write yet another vampire romance or a dystopian saga, let them! The coffeeshop AU with the bartender falling in love with the client? Let's go! The tensed enemies to lovers finally getting on with it? Awesome!! The magic is in the execution, not the premise.

But no, these critics have to swoop in with their unsolicited opinions, acting like they're the arbiters of taste. "Oh, that’s so cliché" "Really? Another story about a lost princess? Who cares?" Listen Linda, if you don’t like it, don’t fucking read it. It’s that simple. You don’t have to ruin someone else’s enthusiasm just because it doesn’t match your narrow definition of what’s acceptable. No-freaking-one is forcing you to read it.

These detractors love to throw around the word "cringe" like it’s some ultimate verdict. Well, what’s truly cringe-worthy is your need to belittle others to feel superior. It’s pathetic. There’s nothing cool or insightful about discouraging someone from pursuing their passion. If anything, it shows a profound lack of empathy, imagination, kindness and just basic decency on your part.

And let's not forget the classic line: "You should be writing something more serious." Oh, should I now? And who made you the judge of what's serious or worthwhile? Writing isn't a one-size-fits-all endeavor, never has been. Some people write for fun, some for catharsis, some to explore their own minds, some to fix the ending of a series, and some to entertain. Every piece of writing has value to the person who wrote it, and often to many others as well.

I just have 6 words to say. Get off your damn high horse. If you can’t offer constructive criticism or, heaven forbid, encouragement, maybe it’s time to keep your opinions to yourself. Writers don’t need your negativity. They need support, constructive feedback, and the freedom to explore their creativity without the fear of being mocked or belittled. If you don't like the prompts, the characters, cool that's your stuff and taste. Doesn't mean you have to be mean about it. You can scroll, block, filter and so on.

In the end, the joke's on you. While you're busy being a critic without a cause, those writers you're so eager to dismiss are actually creating something. They’re putting themselves out there, taking risks, and growing in ways you’ll never understand. And they're brave for doing so. Can't say the same about you. So who’s really cringing now?

Re: Dearly Beloved in-universe fandom, it struck me that I have somehow never mentioned in-universe superhero/villain/whatever fanart despite fanart being such a core (and more importantly visible) component of fandom. (While mentioning fanfiction, subreddits, touching on fancams and ASMR roleplays etc etc) And I guess it makes sense because this is text, I don't really know they look like, and it's hard to describe visuals given the format I've constrained myself to. But I also feel like this blind spot has to do with other fandom-related meta lol. (Self indulgent and long rambling)

1. Superheroes/villains are classified as "real people". In real life fandoms, while there's fanart of famous real people (actors in movies, singers, Kpop groups, athletes, F1 drivers, etc), there's less fanart compared to fanart of characters (anime, video games, books, etc). I assume this is because you need to have a certain level of skill to capture a real person's likeliness nicely. And real people may feel offended upon seeing "bad" fanart of themselves, whereas fictional people can't feel offended.

But superheroes/villains are masked and often wear helmets for safety. So you don't need the skill to draw their real life faces. Their suits are probably visually distinctive which makes it fun to draw (and cosplay!).

2. Superheroes/villains aren't just famous real people. There's a political connotation, in which it could be dangerous to support villains and people may not like heroes because they're like fantasy cops with powers. Especially in this context in which the government controls the heroes, there's whole system to raise heroes from children, there's censorship and conspiracies. Bringing to the third point:

3. Fanart is a very visual. (No shit, Sherlock.) Okay, in the sense people outside of the fandom are more likely to encounter fanart. It's also a publicly liked form of fandom, in comparison to fanfiction. I guess edits and cosplay are also liked and respected, but probably less common than fanart. (Insert something about my positionality as a fan of MCYT who writes fanfic, something about MCYT loving fanart and including it in their videos, commissioning artists, whereas fanfic (rightfully and thankfully imo) stays underground) So people who write hero RPF are already seen as "weirdos" and "the corner of the Internet you shouldn't see". It's not taken seriously. But if someone posted hero fanart on Twitter, normies would see this as liking / endorsement of said hero, whereas fanfiction would not get this kind of visibility. (And is shunned upon probably no matter what you write because fanfiction is generalised is "weird thing Wattpad teenage girls do when they want to bang a famous person".)

3.1. Back to the MCYT fandom thing. Heroes/villains can be compared to MCYT since they look different on and off camera (with and without their suits, like Minecraft skins and designs), they use different names for their different identities, and they put on a public persona. Similarly, I can imagine heroes finding fanart of their hero persona flattering and occasionally engaging with it on Twitter. (Whereas fanfiction stays underground.)

3.2. So I loveeee parodying the "cringe" Wattpad fics, not because I want to make fun of them, but because it's enjoyable to write without restraint. (And it's funny.) I think the general style is so unapologetically fun (and nostalgic). I have a lot of things to say about Wattpad (in defence of its users!), but it mostly boils down to young people being excited and earnest. I know a lot of people hate Wattpad, especially its RPF. I find it fascinating. Because someone (often tweens) had to be motivated to write that, someone had to have the passion to do it, and they'll do it badly (knowingly or not), because writing as a hobby is supposed to be fun! It's the essence of it! And it's the "bad" kind of fanfiction that I want to pay respect to. The kind that people look upon with disdain. The kind YouTubers make fun of. Because more often than not it's a thirteen year old being silly/stupid and it's mean to make fun of kids earnestly trying to make something.

Anyways in the universe, fanfiction sites become a place to store government censored conspiracies/theories because they fly under the radar compared to Reddit and Youtube.

4. I always felt I wanted to write the story instead of Tweetgen-ing it. Maybe it felt more "serious". And mimicing social media with text/HTML is easier than graphics. Now I feel like the utter lack of visuals in a social media fic (when social media is extremely visual, almost obnoxiously so) makes me focus on text itself— dialogue, transcripts, usernames, Tumblr tagging, YouTube comments, notices about subreddits being taken down, to-do lists, "confirm to delete" text boxes. In-universe fanfiction (both the Wattpad and Ao3 type) is taken seriously in the sense it helps with storytelling— it shows differing attitudes to events and public figures. It shows what type of perception is popular.

Anyways. I'm not sure this is interesting and I'm probably rambling inside my head. I guess I do love fanfiction as an art form. And I do admire and respect the earnest writers and readers on Wattpad. I still occasionally wake up to like 30 comments on a Wattpad fic from 4 years ago. I'm glad people still read it lmao.

It happened one night, right at the beginning of autumn, when the leaves started falling and the nights grew colder;

They both agreed to meet in Qiu’s backyard in the early hours of the evening to look at the stars through a telescope together;

Mc managed to bring their favourite tea in a thermos, and gave Qiu the biggest hug once they saw them;

They were just… so happy. Being awake at odd hours of the night trying not to be too loud to not wake Qiu’s parents from their slumber;

Watching the stars and talking about mythology;

Mc started rambling about something they had read and stopped in the middle of it, apologizing about speaking too much;

And Qiu found that they didn’t mind it;

Not only that, they welcomed it. They loved how passionate MC was, how happy and comfortable they had been all night;

Qiu didn’t want them to stop at all, and they realized that they wanted to be the person that MC went to when they wanted to talk about these things;

Well… when people described love it always seemed so overwhelming, and in some aspects it was;

But it mostly just felt right;

Their name is Qiu, their friends call them Autumn, and they are in love with MC;

It’s been a part of them for a long time, and was just nice to finally understand that part of themselves;

Not too much changed after that, only that perhaps their affection and special treatment became more blatant;

In their teens, MC is one of the few people Qiu can stand to be around, and after they’ve realised their feelings they started relying on MC a bit more;

Because Qiu trusts them with that!;

Honestly? MC’s affection is one of the things that keep Qiu going;

MC, despite their obliviousness, ends up noticing and making sure to support them whenever he needs it most;

When Qiu is having a bad day MC will just… Wrap them in a hug and stay there for as long as Qiu needs;

If MC noticed how fast Qiu’s heart beats when they hug, they never mention it;

There are also more subtle types of affection;

Like linking their arms together while walking, grabbing their hand to lead them somewhere or just leaning against Qiu when they’re tired;

Even with all their angst, MC’s affection is always a sure way to soften them;

Qiu will often pinch their cheeks or pat them on the head and lightly tease them for being touchy;

I’m pretty sure Qiu’s love language is acts of service, but knowing how important physical affection is to the MC, Qiu will make sure to initiate it too;

Honestly, I don’t see Qiu as a very jealous person, and knowing Tamarack for years and being close to her, I don’t think that they’re jealous about MC showing her affection too;

Instead, it makes them happy that MC is surrounded by good people that care about them as much as Qiu does;

Tamarack ends up noticing their crush eventually;

I mean… I’m sure everyone knows about it except MC themselves;

And even if she seems a little too invested in it and will sometimes give Qiu a hard time about it in private, she’s very supportive;

And it means a lot to them to have MC’s other best friend support them like that;

In regards to MC being insecure… Qiu doesn’t get it at all;

How can someone that amazing be insecure about themselves? How can they worry about not being loveable enough, not interesting enough? Not beautiful enough?;

And they’re fucking pissed at anyone who would ever make MC feel that way;

MC is a person that Qiu cares about deeply, even if they’re colder at that age, there’s no way they just let them think so little of themselves if they can help it;

So… MC is one of the few people that Qiu will make a big effort with;

They make sure MC knows how special they are, and how beautiful of a person both inside and out!
