Recently became ill about akeshima again I've never been into a ship so persistent to remain in my brain my entire life I just LOVE akeshima... the 'us against the world' vibes they have...... (very delusional)
Akechi could probably see himself in mishima to some degree. He was a nobody. Ignored. Bullied. Abused. On top of that made to do dirty works for his abuser. And his parents did nothing about it. They have similar goals of being acknowledged and both envy the protagonist for having something they wanted. Fuck. If you ignore his general lameness mishima IS akechi if he were powerless.
In my head initially they'd speak specifically to engage in psychological warfare- mishima trying to sabotage the anti-phantom thieves detective price and akechi trying to take advantage of the phansite admin. Boy I sure hope they don't get too attached to each other through intimate understanding and feeding into each other's need for validation and acknowledgement!!
Personally I like to think that mishima saw right through akechi (because he's good at reading people and atmosphere) and told him to drop the bullshit on their first ever meeting too jcjdjjfjdd... And that's why akechi has been his true mean self to him ever since. Mishima would take that over the fake princely farce anytime though. Major point too. He isn't scared of mishima leaving him once he know the real akechi goro because mishima never liked the face he put on for the public in the first place <3 (this does not apply to the killings. He became MORE scared of mishima leaving him if he ever knew about the killings and what he did to the protagonist)
He does mellow out the more he spends time with this little loser though but still. It's the real him. He actually genuinely grew fond of this critter and that's probably going to be his downfall but good god if anything happens to mishima he will kill everyone in the room and then himself
OH YEAH I FORGOT. THEM CALLING EACH OTHER BY FIRST NAMES TOO. THESE TWO ARE THE ONLY STUDENT CONFIDANTS OUT THERE ALWAYS CALLED BY THEIR LAST NAMES

Hihi I saw your blog and it seems to be opened for persona 5 requests, and sm crossed my mind with an idea.
I'm very close friends with this girl who is very sweet and amazing and could do nothing wrong and very much fun and comfy to be around (you could tell I like to be around her:')) but she his this one friend, and it seems the this Friend is her best friend (she is very popular and she consider to be friends with everyone but no one really is close to her like our friend group and the friend of hers) and the friend is so mean 😭 she is very much an introvert and it seem she doesn't have any Friends only the very sweet girl, and when she hangs out with us she becomes very quiet around the sweet girl yeah sure she will sometimes call her annoying and the girl will only laugh at her and tells her " if you found me so annoying why not sit in the corner of the room since silent is blooming in there" and she stays quiet and just continue to listening to our conversation and you could general see those two together holding hands (in school or outside), she reminds me of a chick who follows her mama<3 (ngl theses two are such beauty together istg those pretty ppl who always have this cute friendship together 😭 and WE ALL KNOW THE COLD GIRL HAVE A SOFT SPOT FOR THE SWEETEST GIRL EVER👹)
Could I request The Royal trio (separately!) With this sweet s/o who is absolutely best friends with this cold friend who have a soft spot for her ?
(sorry if this was long :'))
Sure thing! My apologies if it isn't good, I am not very familiar with friendships like that!

Fandom: Persona 5
_________
Ren Amamiya:
He is gonna try to include the cold friend as much as possible.
Likes seeing that his s/o tried to include them as well.
Totally likes it when you don't mind it being called annoying by them.
Would try to ask you if there was something bothering them.
Likes it when you two are having fun together, making him love you even more.
He does hope that they aren't pretending to be your friend, because he will change their heart if that was the case.
As someone who is also introverted, he can see where they are coming from.
When you seem to be happy around them, he is happy too.
"You two have a very interesting friendship…"
Goro Akechi:
We all know he is the same, and it makes him jealous.
Even when he was still putting on the Detective Prince act, you could see he was jealous.
He is scared you will leave him for that friend.
Definitely plotting murder when they would call you annoying. (Only he can do that)
You have to calm him down and make him sure you aren't bothered by it.
Still glares at the friend whenever the two of you are a bit too close to each other.
If he finds out they are faking their friendship, he will go to Mementos and kill them for playing with your friendship like that.
Eventually he is going to come around with them, but that doesn't mean they would be friends themselves.
Will kiss you so they know you are taken, even if you and them are just friends.
"Friend or not, I'll make sure that they know not to mess with your feelings…"
Sumire Yoshizawa
Won't really know how to handle it.
Not that she isn't used to it, she had worked with Akechi after all.
Will try to understand them better, as you requested.
Will try to ask why they would call you annoying.
You had to explain to her it is just something friends say to each other for fun.
Friend is gonna try to explain they mean it, but you know better.
You see how nervous Sumire is, but you are trying to give it a shot.
Of course she would try too, a friend of yours a friend of hers after all.
"I am sure we will get along fine! I hope…"

P5R: Rebel Girl (A FeMC Story/P5R Rework) Chapter 178: Mitigation
On Sunday, The Phantom Thieves gathered at Haru’s house. When they got there, Haru greeted them all. “Welcome.”
“Woah,” Ryuji said.
“Follow me,” Haru instructed. She led them to the study. “So, should we study first, or discuss Akechi?”
“I think Akechi may be a little more pertinent,” Morgana said.
“As much as I want to encourage studying, I agree,” Makoto said. “Besides, I’ve been studying a lot. And I can assure you all have been too, right?”
“Well…” Ann said, nervously.
“Before we disappoint Makoto,” Ren said, “let’s get down to brass tacks.”
“OK,” Ann said. Makoto groaned.
“So, to recap,” Ren began, “Akechi suspects that I’m a Phantom Thief, but has no proof to back up his claim.”
“But there’s a chance he could find something,” Futaba said.
“Indeed,” Lena agreed. “He’s a very smart detective.”
“True, but,” Ren continued, “he offered to work together in order to figure out what’s really going on.”
“Riiiiiiiight,” Ryuji said. “Not that I don’t trust him, but I’m not entirely on board with telling him.”
“True,” Yusuke said. “We might figure out something in the immediate future, but we might not be able to achieve our end goal if Akechi knows who we are.”
“So what do we do?” Jose said.
“If there was a way to cooperate while still keeping our distance…” Sumire said.
Mogana got an idea. “Maybe there is!”
“What is it?” Ann asked.
“Futaba, would it be possible to message Akechi anonymously like you messaged us?”
“Well, yeah,” Futaba said. “I’d need his number though.”
“I have it,” Ren, Lena, and Makoto said. The three chuckled nervously.
“OK…” Ryuji said.
“Well, in any case, with the number, contacting him will be simple,” Futaba said.
“Yes, but what do we say?” Yusuke asked. “We are aware that it doesn’t stop with the director, but we don’t know where it stops. Furthermore, we don’t want to just tell him about the other universe.”
“Yeah, I don’t think he’d believe it,” Ann said.
“Well, he might…” Lena said. “But that might also be a problem.”
“It’s not just about what we say,” Morgana added, “but when.”
“He’s right,” Makoto said. “The longer we wait, the less room it gives us to operate.”
“But too soon, and he could deduce that this is in response to calling me out,” Ren retorted.
“I feel like he’s gonna be suspicious no matter what,” Sumire pointed out.
“I think so too,” Futaba said. “From what I’ve seen, he’s not the type to give up easily.”
Yusuke got an inspired look. “I think I have an idea.”
“Oh?” Haru wondered.
“If we can’t throw him off all the way, then a partial distraction could work,” Yusuke suggested.
“Perhaps,” Makoto said. “But how?”
“Hm. Isn’t it obvious?” Yusuke said. “We have midterms coming up, right?” Everyone nodded. “Except Futaba.”
“M-Me?!” Futaba said.
“We already agreed you’d contact him,” Yusuke pointed out. “If you contact him during midterms, there’s a chance that it might take the heat off of Ren just a little bit.
“I think that’s a great idea,” Haru said.
“I dunno…” Futaba mumbled.
“It may be just the thing we need,” Makoto said.
“You can do it  Futaba!” Lena cheered.
“Are you sure?” Futaba asked. “I mean, I thought we could do this together.”
“Don’t worry,” Morgana called out. “I can be there as well. I don’t have midterms.”
“True, but you’ve been an asset to helping me during exams,” Ren said.
“Wait, what?!” Makoto reacted.
“You don’t need the help,” Morgana said.
“True, but I appreciate it,” Ren siad.
“I think Futaba would appreciate it more,” Morgana countered.
“True,” Ren said. “OK.”
“What do you think, Futaba?” Morgana asked.
“Well… Having someone else there to assist would be nice,” Futaba said. “OK!”
“Great!” Morgana said.
“This is turning into a very productive meeting,” Sumire pointed out.
“But there’s still the matter of what we tell Akechi,” Jose said.
“That’s a good point,” Sumire said. “If we play our hand too much, it might give Ren away regardless.”
“Well hold on,” Lena said. “Goro has gone on TV to say that he’s going to keep investigating. If we frame it as an invitation rather than accepting his, that might be a good place to start.”
“But how much do we tell him?” Ryuji asked.
“I think part of it depends on how he responds,” Ann pointed out.
“Oh yeah,” Ryuji agreed.
“But we still have to give him something to work with,” Makoto pointed out.
“Well…” Haru thought, “...since we know that the SIU director isn’t at the top of the chain, maybe we can ask him to keep up the pressure on him.”
“That’s not a bad idea,” Sumire said.
“Plus, since he is connected, any information Akechi can find on the director is useful,” Jose said.
“That’s also true,” Ren said.
“But the big question is should we tell him about our plan to bring Makoto’s sister on side?” Ann wondered.
“That is a good question,” Haru said.
“I think we may have to,” Makoto said. “As much as I hate to admit it, Akechi has my sister’s ear. If he can convince her that she’s in danger, she might be more willing to cooperate.”
“That sounds reasonable,” Yusuke said.
“But it could also blow up in our faces,” Makoto said. “My sister has a tendency to be stubborn.”
“Hmmm. That is quite a pickle,” Yusuke said.
“Well, here’s what I think,” Ryuji interjected. “If Eris is going to force someone to go after her, then maybe telling her might not be a bad idea. If she’s prepared to look out for some strange individual, then maybe we can get into her palace without the threat of a crusader.”
“That’s…actually some really strong reasoning on your part, Ryuji,” Makoto said, impressed.
“Eh heh, thanks,” Ryuji replied.
“So, it sounds like we have a plan,” Ren said. “Anything else worth mentioning?”
“Not that I can think of,” Yusuke said.
“Yeah,” Ann said. “And again, how Akechi responds is important for us moving forward.”
“Alright then,” Ren said. “Now with that out of the way,” she pulled out a notebook, “let’s get to studying!” There was some groaning, but they knew it had to be done.
A little while later, one of Haru’s maids knocked and opened the door. “Miss Haru,” she said, “Prosecutor Niijima is here.”
Haru nodded. “Thank you.” She stood up. “Please excuse me for a moment.” Everyone else nodded as Haru left.
She approached the entrance and saw Sae. Sae noticed her as well. “Hello,” Sae said. “I take it you are Haru Okumura.”
Haru nodded. “That’s correct.”
“Do you know why I’m here?” Sae asked.
Haru nodded again. “My staff informed me.”
“Very well,” Sae said. “Where do you wish to meet?”
“The living room is fine,” Haru said.
“Very well,” Sae said. “Please. Lead the way.” Haru nodded again and led Sae into the living room.
Haru sat down in her father’s chair. “Please, have a seat.”
Sae was a little awkward about the offer, but took a seat on the couch. “I guess I’ll get straight to the point,” she told her. “How familiar are you with your father’s business dealings?”
Haru frowned. “Not very. I know they occur, and I know some of the people involved, but I was not privy to a lot of the ins and outs of the company until, well, until my father’s change of heart.”
“What happened after your father’s change of heart?” Sae said.
“He decided to give me his stake in the company,” Haru explained.
“He wasn’t planning on doing that before?” Sae wondered.
Haru shook her head. “Before his change of heart, he was arranging a marriage. I think he wanted my former fiance at the time to run the company.”
“Why do you think he didn’t want you?” Sae asked.
“Well…” Haru said. “I think it may be because I’m a woman.”
Sae clenched her fist. “I see. So, you have no idea about what your father was doing?”
“That’s…not entirely true,” Haru said. “I had a level of awareness. However…I was too scared to do anything. As bad as the things I’ve heard were, I couldn’t do anything because I was too afraid of what my father would do if I said anything. I know that’s selfish, but…”
Sae grew stern. “It’s not selfish.” Haru looked up at her. “You were just protecting yourself.”
“But if I spoke up,” Haru replied, “then maybe others wouldn’t have to suffer.”
“You told me that your father kept you at a distance,” Sae said. “I don’t think he would have respected your input anyway.” Haru looked horrified. Sae noticed this “I apologize. I don’t mean to be harsh.”
“It’s alright,” Haru said. “You’re not wrong in your assumption. But I feel bad for not at least trying.”
Sae sighed. “I know it can be hard. Doing nothing is painful, but in some instances you don’t have much of a choice.”
“How do you deal with it?” Haru asked.
Sae took a deep breath. “I take comfort in doing what I can. Granted I’m in a position where I can do a lot, but even the smallest gesture of kindness to someone can help make the world a better place.”
“I see,” Haru said.
“I will say though,” Sae said, “now that you are in a position to do something, I suggest you try to make things right.”
“Of course,” Haru said. “That’s going to be my first priority.”
“I’m glad to hear it,” Sae said. Haru chuckled. “However,” Haru grew concerned, “there are going to be some people who won’t take even the kindest gesture simply because of what your father did.”
“Oh,” Haru said.
“Again, I don’t mean to discourage you,” Sae reiterated, “but it’s important to understand that some people will feel too betrayed to accept anything, no matter what.”
“I see,” Haru said. “I…think I understand. But that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t try.”
Sae smiled. “I’m glad to hear that.” Haru giggled. “Now then, I was told that you found the Phantom Thieves’ calling card.”
“That is correct,” Haru replied.
“What can you tell me about that?” Sae inquired.
“Well, not much,” Haru said. “I found it in the letterbox after I came home.”
“Hmmm,” Sae pondered. “So whoever delivered it has to have known your address.”
“I…guess so…” Haru said, confused.
“Tell me,” Sae asked, “have you seen anyone suspicious following you home?”
“Not that I can think of,” Haru said. “Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve been told to be aware of my surroundings due to my status. So I tend to be a little more vigilant than the average person But it is possible that I could have missed something.”
“I see,” Sae relied. “Just as an aside, do you have the means to protect yourself? I’m sure I don’t need to tell you, but being a woman can be dangerous sometimes.”
Haru nodded. “I am stronger than I look. Plus, I have a can of pepper spray I carry with me.”
“I see,” Sae said. “A few more things.” She took out a picture of the SIU director and showed it to Haru. “This man is Hiroto Ono. He is the director of the Special Investigations Unit, and was named by your father as the person he was in contact with in order to carry out the mental shutdowns he wanted. Are you familiar with this person?”
Haru nodded. “While my father was recovering from having his heart changed, he stopped by, saying he was an acquaintance.”
“Did he say anything?” Sae asked.
“He just gave his well wishes,” Haru informed her. “He also baked a cake for him.”
Sae was intrigued. “A cake?”
“Correct,” Haru said.
“Did your father ever eat this cake?” Sae wondered.
Haru shook her head. “After receiving it, I thought about it, and had some concerns. I decided to throw it out.”
“Concerns? What concerns?” Sae asked.
“I…can’t be sure,” Haru said. “Something just felt wrong. I didn’t have any evidence that something was wrong,. It was just my gut feeling.”
“Hmmm,” Sae pondered. “And you said you threw it out?”
“Correct,” Haru said.
“Well, if we had any of it, we could run some tests to see if there was anything inside,” Sae said.
“I’m sorry,” Haru apologized.
“Don’t be,” Sae said. “From my understanding, there was no way you could have known about that.”
Haru still pouted. “I know. But still…”
Sae grew serious. “You can’t keep blaming yourself for these things. It’s not like you can change them. The best thing you can do is move forward.”
“Hm. You’re right,” Haru agreed, cheering up. “Thanks.”
Sae smiled. “Thank you. With this information, I’m more well-armed in what to do.”
Haru was surprised. “I…didn’t give you a lot to work with.”
“Trust me, every little bit helps,” Sae assured. Haru nodded. Sae stood up. “Well thank you for your time. I should get going.”
Haru stood and bowed. “Thank you for your advice and dedication.”
“Of course,” Sae said. “Anything to help, right?” She and Haru giggled. “Thanks again.” She started to leave.
“Bye!” Haru called out. Once Sae left, she rejoined her friends with renewed spirits.
Once Sae was outside, she let out a sigh. “Classic Sae: I can tell everyone everything is OK except for myself.” She clenched her fist. “But still, I’m almost there. I just have to keep going.” She headed out, preparing herself for what was to come next.”

Mwahahaha >:D Thanks to the S/O’s traumatic fear of hospitals post I now have an idea! As a sequel to it, can I get Headcanons where Akira and Akechi get critically injured (from Metaverse or an accident I dunno) & they have their own death experiences while in the hospital/ER (they survive thanks to the promises they made with their S/O but still) and their worried S/O visits?
*Casually posts this at 3am* I return from the Super Mega Hell I call transcribing interviews to bring you this
Also… Uh very minor Royal spoilers I guess? In Royal there’s a chance that Mementos is completely dark when you go to one floor but that’s it
As for Akechi’s part… Spoilers for the seventh palace (for vanilla P5) so just incase anyone here is not up to this part I put his part under the cut!
Akira Kurusu & Goro Akechi getting injured and having a near death experience with a S/O who is scared of hospitals for that exact reason
Akira Kurusu:
> Everything was going rather smoothly
> You were in Mementos, taking care of a few requests
> But eventually, you got to a floor that was particularly confusing… And completely pitch black
> “Um Joker? I’m pretty sure I’ve seen this broken wall like three times already.” Skull said as he pressed his face against the window
> “Did I make a wrong turn? No but… I went right and…” Joker muttered to himself as he mentally tried to recall the path he took
> “Should we go back to where we were?” You asked as you squinted trying to see anything in the darkness
> “I’m not exactly opposed to that idea but um, where exactly would that be?” Asked Fox
> “Navi, can you see anything?” Noir asked as she turned to the hacker
> The girl opened her mouth to answer only to be cut off by something no one wanted to hear
> Rattling chains
> “That doesn’t sound good…” Crow said as he leaned forward to grip the driver seat
> “Joker we have to-” Mona began to say
> He didn’t get a chance to finish however as moments later, the Mona car was knocked over causing the Thieves to scream in fear and tumble out
> “Do we even stand a chance?” You asked as you gripped your weapon and looked at the Shadow before you
> The Reaper was… Well, terrifying
> “We don’t really have much of a choice.” Crow replied as he raised his saber
> “Get ready everyone!” Joker called as he rushed towards the Shadow
> You were hitting it with everything you had
> Magic, melee attacks, guns… Even Almighty attacks
> But it seemed like that was barely effecting him
> And what’s worse, you were running out of items
> “Joker…” You say as you turn to him
> Everyone is exhausted, all of you are breathing heavily, trying your best just to stay conscious
> You watch Joker, the leader, your boyfriend, lets out a shaky breath as he turns to Mona
> “Mona… Turn into the car and… Please… Get them out of here.”
> “’Them’? Wait, Joker you don’t-”
> “Please.”
> “No, Joker, you can’t be ser-”
> “I leave you in charge of driving, [Code name].” He says before turning back to the Shadow and aiming his gun at it
> “Wait!-”
> “See you at the entrance.” He says with a smile as he fires a couple of times before turning and sprinting in the opposite direction of the Thieves
> “We- I- We have to-” You stutter out as you turn to try and run after him but then you feel someone’s hand on your shoulder
> “Joker gave you a task to do didn’t he?” Crow says as he gives your shoulder a gentle squeeze
> “But…” You say, tears making your vision blurry
> “Come now, this is Joker we’re talking about, I’m sure he meant what he said.”
> You sniffle quietly before nodding
> “You’re r-right.. Let’s go, everyone.”
~~~
> It’s silent on the way back
> You glance over at Crow who is sitting in the passenger seat and notice that his expression is a lot more… Different than usual
> You’re used to seeing his signature polite yet charming smile but this time he looks…
> Scared.
> Does that mean?…
> No, don’t think like that. This is Joker we’re talking about. I mean… This man runs across rooftops without the slightest care there’s no way he could be defeated…
> Right?
> After a bit more driving you eventually manage to reach the first floor
> But instead of going up the last platform you stop, just right before it
> “Hm? [Code name]?” Queen says as she leans forward a bit
> “I- I want to wait for him.” You say, trying your best to keep your voice from shaking
> You can almost feel everyone turn to look at you but instead of saying anything else you just grip the wheel a bit tighter
> “… Okay.” Crow says after what feels like ages, “let’s wait five minutes and then go up, alright?”
> You nod and bite your lip
> You can’t cry right now, because Joker is fine, and if Joker is fine, then there’s no need to cry
> You repeat these words over and over like a mantra but…
> … Five minutes pass, and Joker is nowhere to be seen.
> You let out a shaky exhale as you grip the wheel once more
> “We-” you begin as you shut your eyes “we have to go up.”
> No one says anything, but it doesn’t matter
> You know everyone’s thinking the same thing.
> You watch as the other Thieves slowly climb out of the Mona car, supporting any of the members that can’t quite find the strength to stand anymore
> Once you’re all out, Mona quickly turns back into his usual form and quickly walks up to you
> “[Code name], let’s go.” He says tugging at your outfit lightly
> You give a quick nod before finally climbing up the stairs
> You’re exhausted and you wish for nothing more than to collapse on your bed and sleep for about a week
> But what you see as soon as you climb the final step makes you instantly break out into a sprint
> Leaning against the wall is… Joker
> His clothes are torn and there’s blood everywhere but he’s really there
> He’s alive
> “Hey, what took you so lo-” He says before you knock the air out of his lungs as you collide into him
> “Oh my God.” You mutter into his chest as you wrap your arms around him tightly
> You hear him hiss which can’t mean anything good but you feel one of his hands slowly rise until its settled on your back
> “Joker! Y-you made it!” Skull shouts as he hobbles as quickly as he can towards you
> “Oh my, you look horrible!” Noir exclaims as she quickly glances at him
> “We need to get him medical help, now.” Crow says as he glances towards the entrance
> “Yes, um, what’s the quickest way to get to the hospital again…” Queen mutters more to herself than anyone else
> “Come on guys…” Joker begins, his voice a lot quieter than before, “I’m fi…”
> He doesn’t get to finish his sentence, instead he just slumps forward causing you to stumble as you try to keep the two of you upright
> “Oh no, Akira! Akira wake up!” You shout as you shake him slightly
~~~
> When he opens his eyes again, he finds himself in a dark room
> He groans quietly as he turns his head to try and get a better understanding of his surroundings
> Upon closer inspection, he notices that this isn’t just a ‘dark room’, it’s a prison cell
> Or to be more exact, his prison cell
> Wait then that means that I’m…
> “How did I end up here?” He mutters as he slowly sits up and stares at the all too familiar bars
> “Hm? Oh my,”
> “So you finally woke up huh, Inmate?!”
> Akira watches as the twin wardens turn and face him at the same time
> “How did I get here?” He asked
> Instead of an answer, Akira just hears a deep chuckle
> “This place exists between mind and matter… I believe this should be enough to answer your question.”
> It really isn’t but okay
> “Don’t look at our Master with such a dumb expression Inmate!” Caroline says as she slams the bars with her baton
> “Caroline, I don’t believe this was his intention.” Justine says with her usual calm voice “I suppose he is simply confused.”
> “… Am I dead?” Akira asks turning his head towards Justine
> “Not exactly.” She answers as she glances at her clipboard
> “It seems you’re too stubborn to die, maybe you do have potential after all.” Caroline adds as a small smile appears on her lips
> “Your friends also seem very determined to keep you alive, they’re the reason why you woke up.” Justine says
> “My friends?” Akira asks
> “They practically dragged you to the nearest hospital! You should thank them for all their efforts!” Caroline says with an angry expression
> “Yes, it seems the bond you share is truly something special.” Justine says with a polite smile
> “Yeah, so stop wasting time and wake up already!” Caroline says before slamming the bars with the baton once more
~~~
> Once again, Akira finds himself opening his eyes
> Only this time, he’s staring at a white ceiling as opposed to a dark prison cell
> Also this time instead of the sound of water dripping, he hears beeps
> Turning his head to confirm his suspicions, he finds a monitor showing his heartrate
> Huh, so he really is in a hospital
> “Akira?”
> “[Name]?”
> He tries to turn his head back but before he can you’re already leaning over him
> “I was so worried… You- You collapsed so I- I tried to wake you up but you…” You practically sob these words out
> “Hey, hey [Name] it’s okay, take a deep breath and try to calm down okay?” Akira says as he raises a hand up to your cheek
> You hate hospitals, he knows that
> Yet here you are, right by his side
> He must’ve made you really worried if you managed to conquer one of your greatest fears
> He makes a mental note of how he will have to make this up to you once he gets out
> “You stopped breathing Akira.” You cry out as tears make their way down your cheeks
> Oh God, how does he even respond to something like that?
> “… I did?”
> Wow, congratulations dumbass.
> “Yes! I- We- Doctor Takemi… Oh God…”
> “[Name], [Name], hey, it’s okay, breathe with me okay? Come on, deep breath in…” Akira says before taking a deep breath
> You let out a few more sobs before trying your best to copy him
> Once you do, he smiles softly and deeply breathes out, hoping you will do the same
> The two of you continue this for a while, and eventually you manage to calm down
> “Good, it’s okay now [Name], I’m okay.”
> “Please don’t… Don’t ever do that again.”
> He nods as he strokes your cheek again
> “I promise.”
Goro Akechi:
> “Long time no see” Crow says to the group before his eyes land on you
> You couldn’t help but look away
> This wasn’t how it was meant to be
> You knew what he was planning, but you always thought hoped that you would be able to change his mind
> You quietly listen as Crow talks to the group and clench your fist when he tells you about Shido being his father
> Panther gives you a quick worried glance but you just raise your head and look directly at Crow
> “Why? Why must you be against us? We- We could’ve-”
> “Let’s finish this.” Joker says cutting you off
~~~
> It doesn’t take long for you to defeat the enemies
> “Goro…” You mutter quietly as you raise your hand slightly
> But then, something you never expected happens
> You watch as that mysterious persona, who you now know as Loki, appears once more and transforms Crow’s pristine white outfit into a dark blue and black costume, the small red cape turning into a ripped up black fabric and his pure white gloves turning black with talon like fingertips
> “You’re going down… I’ll destroy you…. Go down with me!” Crow shouts as more of the red mist surrounds him
> “That bastard, he made himself go psychotic!” Skull says reaching for his weapon
> “No…” You say as you stare in disbelief
> “[Codename] I know this is hard for you but you need to focus right now. You can’t let him win.” Queen says as she places a hand on your shoulder
> You take a shaky breath and nod
> She’s right. You can’t lose here, you need to snap some sense back into him afterall
~~~
> “Change Shido’s heart… In my stead… End his crimes… Please!…”
> “Leave it to me.” Joker answers staring at the partition
> “We can’t…” You begin as you look from one Thief to another
> “Isn’t there some way to get this open?!” Panther says as she glances at Mona
> That’s when you hear the gunshots
> You can’t help but cry out in shock, one hand flying up to cover your mouth
> You realise the others are talking but you just stare at the partiton, tears flowing down your cheeks
> You don’t move, at least not until Fox physically has to drag you away from the partition
> You don’t really know how long the group has been walking to reach the exit, but then again, you don’t really care about that
> You’re still crying when you return to the real world, only this time there’s no mask to hide your tears
> Your face feels hot, and your head hurts which must mean you look like an absolute wreck right now
> Once again, you notice the Thieves are talking but you don’t listen
> After a couple of minutes, you notice that some of the members are slowly shuffling away and heading off in different directions
> Soon enough, it’s just you and Akira left
> “[F/n].” Akira says, as he turns to look at you “I’ll walk you home, okay?”
> You shake your head at that, mentally cursing at the shooting pain you feel moment after
> “… Here…” You practically choke out
> “Huh? I’m sorry I-”
> “I’m staying… Here…” You repeat, hand vaguely gesturing at the Diet Building
> Akira looks at you for a solid minute before nodding a few times
> “Okay… But [F/n]-”
> “I’ll go home… Later.” You say cutting him off
> “Right.” He replies as he turn to walk towards the station “I’m sorry.”
> You listen to his footsteps for a little while, but then… There is silence.
> You’re pretty sure you’re out of tears by now, so you decide to wipe your face with both hands
> You need to calm down, crying won’t solve this
> You take a few minutes to just breathe and eventually, you feel yourself shaking a lot less
> Why did this have to happen?
> No, asking this is pointless now
> You look at the Diet Building once more and bite your lip
> Before you can fully comprehend what you’re doing, you find yourself marching towards it
> You really wish your weapon wasn’t just a plastic imitation in the real world
> Then again, what could you possibly do?
> Maybe you could-
> “Hm?” You hum to yourself as you take a closer look at the wall
> Due to it being early evening, there isn’t much natural light left but you’re pretty sure there’s something smeared on the wall
> Not only that, it seems almost like… There’s some sort of trail?
>… Wait, is that?
> You cautiously touch it with your finger before bringing it back for closer examination
> T-This is…!
> Before you can fully process why there’s blood on the wall you hear the nearby bushes rustle
> You move one hand close to your bag ready to pull out your plastic weapon as you take a few steps closer
> “Who’s there?” You ask
> “Don’t be… Stu-” The voice begins before coughing violently
> “G-Go…”
> “Mm…”
> You quickly drop your bag and use your hands to carefully move away the leaves
> Sure enough, there’s the Detective Prince, Goro Akechi, your boyfriend, lying in a small pool of his own blood
> “How- No, wait- Erm- Hospital.” You sayas you quickly move one hand towards your pocket to retrieve your phone
> “Heh…” Akechi coughs out as a small smile appears on his lips
~~~
> You were pacing the hospital hall back and forth for hours
> Despite your constant pleading, the doctors told you that you can’t be in the room
> Your hands are constantly fidgeting and the amount of times you bit your lip caused you to draw a bit of blood
> You hate this place, you would much rather be anywhere but here…
> But you can’t leave him. You won’t leave him.
> “[L/n] - san?”
> You look up at the sound of your name
> “Yes?” You ask as your eyes land on the doctor
> “You can go see him now, but…”
> “But what?” You ask as your eyes widen
> “He’s in a coma.”
> You nod and give a quick thanks before walking into the room
> Your hands are shaking again
> Calm down [F/n], just breathe
> You take a deep breathand slowly step towards his bed
> Goro is wrapped in so many bandages but he’s alive
> “Goro…” You whisper as you gently stroke one of his hands “you absolute fool…”
> You stay with him until visiting hours are over
> But you return the next day
> And the day after
> It’s not until the 3rd day that he actually wakes up
> The first thing he does when he wakes up is raise one hand slightly and flex his fingers
> “Hm.” He hums looking at his hand
> “Oh my God… Goro, how are you-”
> “Terrible.” He says with an annoyed expression
> “I thought you… You know…” You say as you turn to fully look at him
> “I almost did.” He answers, a hint of sadness in his voice
> There’s a moment of silence before he speaks up again
> “It was… A strange experience.”
> “Huh? How so?”
> He coughs before answering
> “I’m not sure how to explain it,” he says before clearing his throat “I saw… A blue room?”
> You frown at him, clearly confused
> “Don’t look at me like that… I told you I don’t know how to describe it.” He says, his eyes scanning your face
> “Ah, um, sorry.”
> “You know, I can’t say for sure but… I thought I heard your voice in there.”
> “Hm?.. Wh- What did it say?”
> “You said I’m too stubborn to die, especially in that asshole’s Palace, plus, I heard you crying.”
> You let out a small laugh at that
> “Well, it’s not wrong.”
> “There’s no need to cry over me. I told you, I’m not wanted, I’m a backstabber, a traitor.”
> You click your tounge at that as you reach for both of his hands and squeeze them lightly
> “That’s wrong. You may have betrayed the Phantom Thieves but you are wanted. I want to be with you.”
> “[F/n]…”
> “I… I can’t say I forgive you for what you did, but that doesn’t mean I’m just going to abandon you!”
> Goro doesn’t answer
> Instead, he just squeezes back

Revolution (P5/PJO)
A warm up fic that I'm too nervous to put on A03. Unedited.
At age sixteen, Akira never expected to be part of a war. But then again, life as a demigod is anything but normal to begin with. He’s not even...he’s not even anything in the eyes of the gods but for some reason he was the child of the prophecy, whatever that meant. Akira always considered it a death sentence in waiting. Aren’t prophecies once in a lifetime opportunities?
Since the age of eleven, Akira has been forced to go on all sorts of different quests ranging from petty things such as being an over glorified uber eats for a god or something like preventing a war between two different monsters. Now it was a war.
A war that could be easily prevented if the gods or even some of the camp managers and leaders just opened their eyes and look. Akira would know. He was the son of a minor goddess after all, a mother who never bothered to claim him and a camp that force him into a cramped cabin of a god who is “so kind and merciful to let someone like him inside.”
Children of minor gods are usually one that can live in the outside world without major trouble. Apparently their scent is thinner and are less appealing than children of major goddesses such as his bunkmate Ryuji, child of Hermes and sweet Ann from Aprohidites. They are his best friend and he does not envy them at all. Both Ryuji and Ann has been through s much trouble because of their parent lineage. Left alone to single parents and their own human trouble combined with their demigods' trouble. He would do anything for them. Still, it would be nice to have someone to call as family. The only reason Akira even found out about his parentage is because of Goro.
Goro.
Goro had high expectation placed under him. As the son of Zeus it was expected. But he was never chosen to be in any important quest and spend most of his time training or in his cabin. Goro was one of the first people Akira met when he first came to camp. According to gossip, Goro has been in camp since the age of seven after his mother killed himself, overpressed by the idea of raising a child of god and especially after how lord Zeus practically left the two on their own. Goro was a loner on the outside and very bitter on the inside. When Akira got his first quest a month later, Goro practically ignored him. It was heartbreaking for the eleven year old for his new friend or at least someone he consider his friend to suddenly hate him.
He really wanted to go to the outside world with him but instead went with Ryuji and Ann. When he came back, bruised and bloodied, filled with new fears and deep hatred for salt water. He hoped his time away would have let his friend cool down enough for them to talk again but as soon as Akira laid eyes on the other the boy ran straight for his cabin. It wasn’t long until Akira got his first fetch quest. This time with Yusuke, son of Apollo and Futaba the quirky daughter of Hephaestus. It was a strange team, filled with dumb fights and hiding in the bathroom but it was successful.
Goro still won’t talk to him. Instead he ended up with two Ares girls on his twelfth birthday.
It was after this quest when he was finally given a small break. At this point he was desperate. He was tired,scared and most of all he wanted his friend back. So once he was left alone after dinner, he dragged Goro by the arm from the archery ring and into the Zeus cabin.
“We need to talk.”
They talked and talked and talked way past curfew, maybe they could have reconnect months ago. If only Akira was given a chance to settle down. But now he did.
It was Goro that figured out who his parent was, Goro always did say that whenever he was around Akira he always felt safe, at home. Other people told him that too. Even Akira felt the sense of family whenever he’s with his friends.
They hit the book soon after and came up with an answer.
Epione, the goddess of soothing pain.
Akira’s power seems to work with mental pain and after going on a quest with Goro and Hifumi, he can soothe small physical pain. Anything bigger than a small knife wound would leave him passed out on the ground. But it was better than any ambrosia or nectar, it was a rewarded feeling and an especially tiring one.
It made the quest after a lot easier.
Everything breaks down around the age of fifteen, it was quiet and sudden. Akira knew of camp deserters, they all did. It is often talked about in late night horror stories. Akira may have made one or two up on his own as well. But there has been an increase in unrest between the minor god and goddess children.
“The gods are using you as their playthings aren’t they?” Ten year old Nozoki told him one day. “How long can you keep winding yourself until you break?”
He still hasn't told anyone of his talk with the gods, yet.
It was after that day that people started leaving the camp in groups.
Yukki
Nozoki
And Goro.
The older boy didn’t even say goodbye.
Was it something Akira has done?
Their last talk was another late night one. This time hanging out on the roof of Goro’s cabin. They were talking about school. Akechi was close to finishing high school and Akira was on his way to his last year. When Akechi asked of his future plans, Akira hesitated. Was there a future for him? Akira never thought he would make it this long, even then, he did not have the time to develop any hobbies or focus on school work compared to his peers. Who cared about school when the world was ending.
Maybe it was his defeated tone, he hated it at first he really did. But now Akira just accepts it as another part of life. Demigods don’t get to live long, everyone knows that, that’s why the camp was created in the first place to provide children a safe place to live and to teach them to survive. Akira who's been in and out of the camp in almost all of his teen years has a higher chance of an early death compared to his friends.
“What if everything change.” Goro talked in a low and deep voice. A tone Akira rarely hear outside of anger and battle. He must be serious. “What if we had a chance to go out into the world without any fear of getting killed or being forced by the gods to do whatever they want.”
“That’s a dangerous thought you have there.” He replied.
“Humor me Akira.”
“Well,” What kind of answers would satisfy Goro. He honestly never really bothered to even spend time daydreaming about this. What are somethings the seasonal campers talk about during dinner time?
“I think I want to go somewhere populated.”
“Somewhere populated, Kurusu-kun?”
He nodded. “Yeah like the scramble or Kyoto, maybe even destinyland.”
“Those are tourist traps Kurusu-kun.” Goro replied wirily.
“So? What I want my wallet to get tricked by the many faces of capitalism. Aren’t they places of memories. I don't mind spending my whole day in these places. It seems like fun.”
“You know, I expected someone like you to want something more dramatic. For someone who always lives in the danger zone.”
He shrugged. “Normal is Ok, I think I would like to be that mysterious man behind the bar.”
Goro actually snorted at that. “Are you even able to stay in one place for that long?”
Ok, so maybe Goro has a point. There no why he can stay in one place for so long. But if he gets to meet new people everyday it sure to be just as fun.
“-beside, I can’t see you handling alcohol.”
“Geez Goro, way to crush my dreams. I was thinking of running some kind of underground coffee bar. “
“An underground coffee bar. That sounds like you. I think I might have isted everyday.”
“Oh? A loyal customer ? Thank you for your patronage, good sir.”
“You’re very welcomed overworked barista.”
They sighed.
“Goro is everything OK?| He finally asked. “What you have been saying lately has me worried. You know the people upstairs can hear everything here right?”
“Of course, please do not worry about me Akira-kun, I’m sure you already have lots on your plate right now.”
“But I always have space in my heart for you. Please ‘kechi, I won’t tell anyone no matter what you tell me. On my life.”
“You really shouldn’t be putting your life on the line so easily.” Goro mumbled, mostly to himself but Akira heard it all anyway.
“It’s all part of the job.” He chirp back.
The next day he was gone.
A traitor everyone called him, someone who abandoned the gods to join the wrong side historically and morally. It did not take long for the rumors to start around camp.
“I’ve always knew he was evil.”
“He was always acting so creepy around Akira I wonder if he was ever planning on killing him.”
“It’s good that he left, who knows what he would’ve done if he stayed. “
It was getting harder and harder to face each day with a smile without Goro. His other friends at least one that has yet to publicly disowned Goro stayed by his side comforting him telling him that everything is alright.
But war, war is coming and Akira is expected to be in the front line as a leader. He can’t. He does not want to do this any more. Oh godly parent please give him a sign.
But nothing came.
Nothing but ruin for Tokyo.
They were
Winning
Losing
Dying
...fighting.
They were fighting for their life, each of his friends split up into different groups to try and take back different parts of the city.
Akira was tasked to find the leader of the resistance and to put an end to it once and for all, a fitting task for the hero.
It did not take long to find him, he was exactly where Akira expected him to be and exactly where Goro wanted him to be at.
“Goro,” He mumbled, approaching his enemy with his dagger clutched in his hand tightly. “I came to stop you.”
Goro turned around to face him. Instead of the camp t-shirt and ripped jeans that Akira normally sees him in. He was instead wearing a leather jacket and a collared shirt underneath his regular jeans. It was a strange combination but Akira can’t help but to think it suits Goro well.
“I’m happy you came.”
“This is our meeting place after all.”
Enough with the banter, Akira can’t afford to stall now, not when everyone is fighting for their lives.
“Goro, surrender now. I can get the gods to put you on probation or something bu-”
“You know that’s not true. Do you really think that will pay attention to a mortal even someone like you, since when have they done anything for you.”
“I-”
“Think Akira.” Goro shouted, holding on to his shoulder for dear life. “You’ve been used over and over again. We were just kids. You don’t even have a childhood doesn’t that upset you?”
It did, it still does but Goro knows that he does not like to think about that.
“I used to be so scared.” Goro’s volume went down all the way to a whisper as if talking about this of all things would finally get him stuck down by lightning. “Everytime you come home your eyes would grow darker and darker. I used to have nightmares that the darkness would eat you alive. The trauma you endured. As a son of one of the big three it should have been me.”
Akira shook his head vigorously, he could even feel some of the hair strand stabbing his eyes. It burns a bit, but that’s not important.
“No Goro! I would never wish this life on anyone. The quest, the glory. It’s not worth it! I wanted you to be safe and happy but you ignored me.”
“I know.” Goro’s hand slowly trailed down until they came right above his waist putting the two in some sort of half hug position. “I’m sorry Akira.”
Akira swallowed back a sob threatening to come out. His dagger was right there and Goro was so close and vulnerable. He could end this, he can stop this war once and for all.
“Goro please, end this war. That way everything will go back to normal.”
“You know that’s not what’s going to happen. The gods will use you again and again until you one day burn out and they choose the next unlucky kid to be the hero.” Goro paused. “Akira...why don’t you join me.”
“Hu-”
“Lots of our men need healing. With your powers you can save them! Your mother may not recognize you but we do. We can stop this cycle and give everyone a better future. We would no longer live in fear or worried over someone’s temper tantrum. Akira, I know I haven’t been a good friend to you but I can make it all up now so please.”
Goro reached out his hand and dropped his weapon.
“Join me.”
Akira dropped his dagger as well.
He knows this isn’t the right choice, if they were to fail both Akira and Goro would face harsh unimaginable punishment. But Goro along with everything he ever wanted was right there.
Akira reached out his own hands and-

That was it. Everything the rest of them had suffered had been for nothing. Akira had died for nothing. It was so bitterly amusing that Goro found himself crying once again. The red drizzle stained his face as he reached out for Morgana.
“For what it’s worth. I’m sorry.”
Morgana doesn’t seem to care, as his body slowly dissipates into smoke being swallowed by the dark sky he shakes his head. The little Akechi can still see of his fur is slicked with the downpour of what he assumes is blood.
“This is all my fault. If I hadn’t met any of you this wouldn’t have happened. I never meant for it to turn out like this, I’m so sorry.”
He disappears entirely. Goro is once again alone. He slams his fist on the ground, he can barely feel anything of him left when he smiles. At least now he may be able to thank Akira properly. Apologize that nothing changed in the end. He really hadn’t changed at all, had he?
He fades away.
--
When he awakens once more it’s in a cell. His clothes hadn’t changed despite the cell being something that seems so distinctly otherworldly that he almost expects it. The place seems familiar in a way he doesn’t think he could even begin to describe.
Standing up he sees two twins in matching clothing, one slams a staff against the door before realizing that he’s not who she’s expecting. He’s not Akira.
“You’re not the inmate!” She exclaims.
“He’s dead, I’m a friend.”
A deeper voice chuckles, bringing a frown to Goro’s face. He knows it but can’t quite tell where he’d know it from. It calls to something deep within him, something he isn’t sure he wants to acknowledge.
“I suppose that is no matter. Despite what I expected of you, you took his place, you should take his punishment.”
What the fuck was that supposed to mean? What was expected of him? What was Akira’s place?
There was a much more pressing matter that he had to deal with, punishment.
“What punishment? Why?” He brings his gloved hands to the cold iron bars.
“You’ve lost the game. I have no more use for you, the punishment is death. Caroline, Justine, if you’d do the honors.”
The door opens, Goro knows what he has to do. If there’s even a chance he’s still alive, if there’s even a chance that he can destroy the metaverse he has to take it. He needs assistance, he closes his eyes and prays to the only god he’s ever been able to rely on.
He summons Loki, his outfit long since changed to reflect more of Akira’s. The boy had changed his idea of rebellion more than he thought. His red gaze rests pointedly on the twins. The one that reminds him of himself has a fearful look despite trying to keep up her tough act.
“R-resistance won’t save you here!”
“No, but I’m willing to try,” Akechi replies calmly.
The old man rises from his desk. “This may be entertaining to watch.”
A fight ensues. He can feel his stamina drain as time goes on. Bruises that probably rival Akira’s that fateful November day sting across his skin. Caroline and Justine look barely better than him despite wielding his power without a persona. They glance at each other, like they realized something by fighting together.
There’s not much time left. Goro has to carry out their will, to the disturbance of the old man. Goro has to defy this god that had apparently tried to determine his destiny, and the new girl that stood before him- Lavenza, sent him to find the phantom thieves.
He thinks he’s gotten to everyone when Lavenza tells him there’s one he left.
Morgana.
“Akira Kurusu.”
No. No, that can’t be right. “I told your worse half, he’s dead,” Goro doesn’t think he can bear to repeat himself. Lavenza shakes her head to explain.
“This place exists between dream and reality, mind and matter. He was forgotten from your world, the same as all of you. You must find him.”
Goro can’t tell what he feels, relief? Anger? Fear? What would he even say to Akira? What hope could Goro offer him after everything? Still he has to try. He rushes back down the hall, examining every last cell. He’s here. Somewhere.
Finally, down some dark corridor the blue cell glows. A dark mess of hair covers the stupidest glasses Goro has seen in his life. His legs act without any input from him, rushing him to the cell.
“Akira! Thank god you’re safe!”
He doesn’t turn his head to look at Goro. He curls up into a tighter ball. Like he’s exhausted, like he just wants Goro to let him rot there.
“Was it all for nothing?” He asks quietly. “For every criminal we took down, a worse one took their place, and nobody seemed to care. We damned them to a life in that torment in Mementos. Would it have been better to give up and hang my head like this till I went home?”
Goro can’t stand here and listen to this. None of what Akira was saying was true, it wasn’t him. The fact that Goro couldn’t see that sooner sends a wave of guilt through him.
“That’s not true and you know it.” His voice is sharper than he intended. “And even if it was, you still have time to turn things around.” Pausing he steps a little closer. “You’re a hero, you can’t let others suffer and ignore that. I’m sorry I never told you that sooner. This team is better with you leading them; they need you.”
It’s now or never. Goro places a gloved hand over his chest, his eyes begin to well up with tears. “I need you. Don’t you get that?” He pours out the words that he should have said in the engine room. The words he never got a chance to say. “You drove me to do better, even when I was under Shido’s influence, you’re the reason I awakened to Robin Hood, you made me think that I could be a better person. Because you never give up on anyone or anything no matter how hopeless they seem.”
His voice is cracking, praying that Akira is taking these words to heart. If Goro can’t bring him back he doesn’t know if he can carry on.
“You wouldn’t give up on me so you can’t give up on your friends now.”
He wasn’t sure when Akira had turned to him with that small little smile, or how long he’d been there. He stands up.
“Yeah. Rolling over and calling it quits isn’t my style. Never has been.” He transforms into his phantom thief outfit, the cell door swings open. “Besides, I haven’t saved you quite yet either.”
“We’ll call it even,” Goro grabs his collar and pulls him into a kiss instead of yelling at him this time. It may be the last he sees of Akira after all.

Note
can you explain in more detail why you think the PT weren't good friends for akiren? i'm not asking out of hate or to start drama, i just never interpreted things that way and i'm genuinely curious. i don't think them being brainwashed by maruki makes them "bad friends", but i don't know if that's what you meant either. i'd love to read a proper explanation on this that isn't just people arguing in the notes of that post.
Hi! Yeah, I know the ~discourse~ climate is pretty touchy and not a good place to exchange ideas, so I’ll do my best to put my thoughts on this matter into words.
Settle in, bc this one is long.
I’ll start off by saying I don’t dislike the PT, nor do I think they’re bad people, and honestly I think they love Joker a lot! Ryuji calling Akira after his fake death and talking about how his ideas on what makes a hero have changed because of Akira genuinely makes me emotional, along with dozens of other scenes with the thieves! They’re good kids who could be really good friends to Akira but that’s not what’s shown in the game. I don’t think it’s controversial to say Akira’s relationships with all of his friends are transactional. That’s kind of the point, all of his confidants arise out of deals, give and take, and in the metanarrative of the game, that’s how it works. You as the player help these characters solve their problems, and through ranking their confidants up, you get access to more gameplay perks. So it’s pretty even!! But like,,Akira, the character, isn’t the player. There’s no in-story mechanic by which he can cash in friendship points for being-good-at-killing-things prizes. Yes, he uses those abilities to not die in the metaverse, but there is no literal, in-universe way to explain how hanging out with someone translates to [insert gameplay perk here]. So you have to look at what is physically happening in the story. Akira hangs out with the PT, stands there while they have drama with another irrelevant character, and then one way or another their problems get solved and they swear to be Akira’s blood brother or whatever. Akira is a crutch for these characters, and they say multiple times that they wouldn’t have been able to do what they did without him. So all of their shit gets handled and Akira gets?? Like actually gets?? What? Inquiries about his well-being? Offers to help him? Questions about his life, his interests? No,,,not really,, But he gets access to a super powerful persona!! Yay!!! Bc everyone knows he’s just a little shadow-killing machine, right? And even the relationships he does get something tangible (as in separate from the mechanics of the game) out of, like Kawakami’s, are built on the notion that if Akira stops providing for whatever reason, the relationship will end. So essentially, Akira is under the pressure of filling whatever role his friends need him in for however long at any time, and he’s been led to believe that if he stops or fails, he will stop receiving any reciprocal care and acceptance.
(And I know this is all gameplay stuff, I know it has to be like this to codify the complicated process of human relationships, I know all of that, I’m just trying to find a deeper layer bc that’s what I do.)
This whole thing comes into pretty clear focus for me during the third semester when you visit everyone in the false reality. Everyone is happy to see him, of course, but they’re clearly wrapped up in their own happiness. Which is understandable, again, I’m not saying the PT need to be attached to Akira to be good friends, but it all still feels off to me.
If they know Joker, then they’d know it’s weird that he just shows up and starts asking these pointed questions while they’re in the middle of something. All of their other interactions with him have been led by them. Yeah, Joker approaches them bc the player has decided to hang out with them, but the other character always chooses the activity and leads the discussion. Akira showing up out of nowhere and asking them to “remember” and “move on” and whatnot should be raising some major red flags. And it clearly does, since their memories do start to return, but they’re all too scared of losing their happiness that they nope out of the conversation as soon as possible, without stopping to consider why Joker might be trying to reach out to them like that. They’re his friends; they should know he wouldn’t just be trying to hurt them or make them unhappy. After all, their entire relationship with him up til that point has been exclusively about Joker trying to help them. This doesn’t make the PT bad people, running away is a totally natural reaction in that situation. They’re just kids, and their minds have been manipulated to a point, but it’s not like they don’t remember Joker or the way they’ve grown since meeting him. In fact many of them mention how much they’ve matured recently, but they never actually relate that back to Akira, despite him being the primary driving force behind most of their personal arcs, even though they definitely remember him. Translation vagueness or deliberate nod to the idea that the PT don’t actually credit Akira with all the hard work he did after their initial lip service? Hmmm. Anyway, their failure to recognize that Joker is struggling just demonstrates to me what was set up all throughout their confidant links, that their relationships are transactional and that they don’t necessarily consider Joker and his individual needs outside of what he provides for them. And when they no longer need him bc that hole has been filled, he simply doesn’t occupy the same place of importance in their lives.
Makoto’s flashback in particular stood out to me, bc it was from a moment where she was specifically talking about feeling like she finally found a place to belong with the Phantom Thieves (and by extension, with Joker), but then she desperately tries to brush it off. Obviously that sense of belonging wasn’t meaningful enough to her for her to want it back. And I’m not blaming her, of course, any teenager would choose to have their father back over being in a vigilante group lmao, I just thought it was telling that the devs decided to show us a scene that was originally meant to be heartwarming as an example of the harsh reality Makoto wants to forget. All of the flashbacks are from defining moments for the thieves, but that one specifically got me like *thinking emoji*
So his friends are hesitant, despite the fact that they must know something is wrong. It’s understandable, they all stand to lose a lot if someone messes with the status quo. I genuinely don’t think I would react any differently. But there is someone who reacts differently and against his own self-interest. It’s Goro, the one who has arguably the most to lose, who doesn’t turn away from Akira. He seeks Akira out and teams up with him to uncover what’s really going on, even though he has every reason to believe that prodding too deep will literally mean the end of his life. He forces Akira and himself to face the truth because he knows anything else would just be an insult to what they’ve suffered so far. He’s the only one who never flinches, and that, more than any of his friends’ come-to-jesusing (which Akira still has to initiate) is what Akira needs in that situation. For the first time (outside of the brief instances in the tutorial levels), we see a situation where Akira is actually the dependent one, the one who needs help, who needs support. And the only one who has ever provided that, unconditionally, without demanding anything in return, is Goro. I could go into how Goro’s confidant blows all of the others out of the water in terms of building both himself AND Akira as characters, but it’s been said already and by smarter people than me. But basically, despite competition being a core theme of their relationship, Goro is the only character who is portrayed as Akira’s equal. Their contests are all in the name of improving not just Goro, but Akira too. Goro is the only character who expresses an interest in Akira’s inner life and development, and as such he knows Akira better than anyone else. So when Maruki tries to trap them all in a gilded birdcage, Goro won’t stand for it and he knows Akira won’t stand for it either. That’s why he’s so betrayed if you choose to accept the dreamworld. You’re negating the basis of your entire relationship with him and going against your own principles. Out of every character in the game, the one who knows Akira best and refuses to abandon him even when that could mean his own death is Goro Akechi.
I want to reiterate: I do not hate or even dislike the PT!! And tbh I don’t really think they “abandoned” Akira. That post, imo, is supposed to be kind of hyperbolic. Unless it’s referring to how many of them literally sprint away when he comes to talk to them lol. I look at it more like a commentary on how thoughtlessly the PT act as soon as their wishes are granted. I know it’s set up linearly for story purposes, but isn’t it kind of sad how no one checks up on Akira in the week he’s going around talking to people? Especially after he’s been acting so comparatively weird? It’s not unusual that they might be caught up in other stuff, but while you’re going around and visiting everyone, you don’t get a single text or call from ANY of the thieves, for a whole week!! Goro even comments on it directly with his pointed little “I’m sure you’re just as close as you were before” comment. God, he’s such a bitch. Ultimately, the PT do get their acts together, and it’s partially out of the realization that Akira is struggling alone against something and needs their help, which I love and appreciate. I think they are good friends who want to support Akira, but they can’t understand him past the role they’ve placed him in, and until they do, they’ll never be able to be what he needs. Akira loves his friends and knows he can rely on them in most ways, but those relationships will always be dogged by the pervasive fear that he must constantly earn the right to have the relationship at all. What he needs MOST is someone he doesn’t have to perform for, and from what we see in the game, none of the thieves fit that bill. Except Goro.
I know this was long and rambly and probably pretty disjointed but I wanted to be as thorough as possible and all of my thoughts just sort of gushed out. Obviously ymmv about all of this depending on how you interpret the game, but this is what I arrived at thanks to my analysis so this is what I have for you! Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk

We’re at the end of the road, folks.
And god damn, I feel so validated by my Sojiro characterization. Wow. Thanks for basically making me canon for ten more seconds, Atlus. XDDD
So when last we left our intrepid heroes, they were laying at the bottom of the Jail of the Abyss, because Ichinose is an asshole. So we had to fight our way back up, carrying Sophia’s unconscious body. Which wasn’t that bad; the Jail isn’t very big. We left Sophia at the door to keep her safe, and then charged back into the hall of the Ark to hack Ichinose’s exploding crystal box thing.
Ichinose doesn’t understand why we came back.
Tumblr media
So, yeah. I guess like... bizarro-world Maruki? Maruki wanted to alleviate suffering by granting everyone’s wishes. EMMA’s going to make it so that people can’t wish for anything.
After a kick-ass hacking battle set to the new version of Rivers in the Desert, Ichinose yells at us about our right to judge. Why should humanity keep this painful world, just because WE’RE strong? Just because we’ve never screwed up or suffered?
Which, clearly she has no idea who the fuck she’s talking to.
Tumblr media
We’ve worked too hard to listen to that kind of bullshit.
Ichinose proclaims that “humans don’t need hearts” and charges up the laser crystal to blast us again, and Sophia steps in to block the attack. She’s still fighting Ichinose’s control even though Ichinose insists that she’s just a faulty prototype.
Apparently Ichinose created Sophia in the first place because she spent a lifetime being called a heartless doll, so she made an AI to help her learn about the heart.
Tumblr media
I think you’re the problem, but not for the reasons everyone else is saying.
But she got angry when Sophia started asking questions of her own and basically tossed her aside, until EMMA found her and dropped her into the Shibuya Jail.
And Sophia, unlike her creator, has learned and grown, and is tired of being given orders. She’s ready to make her own choices.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That is certainly a persona.
I gotta admit, they got me. I was wondering why Sophia didn’t have her arcana yet, but for some reason, I also wasn’t expecting her to get a proper persona. I’m now wondering about the implications of someone being able to code an AI capable of developing a soul that can summon a persona. There’s a zero percent chance that Ichinose had any access to plumes of dusk, which are the reason that Aigis and Labrys gained enough consciousness to have personas. So Sophia is legitimately a miracle piece of technology.
Pandora is an interesting choice, but I dunno if I can articulate that beyond a surface-level, “Oh, because she’s Hope, and Hope was still in the box.”
Tumblr media
I swear to god, every major villain in this game is trying to be Goro Akechi. For the last goddamn time, we don’t kill people. Get up, Ichinose. We’re leaving.
Ryuji literally grabs her by the arm and drags her out, because she’s trying to stay behind. Which just confirms for me that if Goro hadn’t put up that bulkhead door, we’d have dragged his stupid ass out of the Ship, too. XD
Back to the real world, and Tokyo is blacking out, and the Tower is losing its shit.
Tumblr media
The metaverse is fusing with reality, the Tower is becoming the Tree of Knowledge, and hell yes we are climbing this tower after all!
Morgana points out that this is the same thing that happened last year, and Zenkichi freaks out a little bit.
Tumblr media
You’re lucky you moved to Kyoto, sir. You missed quite a bit.
I love these kids, though. They’ve got so much black humor about this whole god thing.
Tumblr media
The metaverse encroaching on reality means that everyone has to cram into the bus in their thief gear. Zenkichi, please. Your hat. Sir.
Tumblr media
I love climbing this tower. I’ve been here, too! Also they have butter. XD
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was expecting the Mementos version of the lower observation deck, and instead I got some weird amalgam between Mementos and Azathoth’s boss chamber.
Tumblr media
We had to fight Metatron as the guardian of the last elevator, which is another parallel to Yaldabaoth’s archangels. And then it’s up to what I guess used to be the high observation deck to fight the big box.
EMMA insists that all humanity wants is to let it give them all the answers, and it throws them into some sort of alternate fog world full of the voices of the public.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Thieves are all separated, trapped in the fog. Each of them has to find their way out, and they realize that the fog of the Desires is protecting EMMA. EMMA knows exactly how calling cards work, so they won’t work on her. Instead, the Thieves decide that they need to send the calling card to the public, so that they’ll become aware of their desires again and the desires will crystalize.
...oh come on, Atlus. We’re right in the endgame.
Tumblr media
One last hacker battle to break into EMMA’s server room in the tower, and Futaba and Ichinose manage to hack EMMA itself to deliver a calling card to everyone at once.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Love you, Zenkichi. We’ve taken out two gods already. We’re good.
Confronting the Ark again reveals a bunch of freaky tentacle arms grabbing the desires, and then the box turns into some sort of massive figure that looks sort of like Yaldabaoth, except less robot and more seraphim. It literally names itself the Demiurge, so I feel like EMMA may be drawing something from the lingering dregs of Yald’s influence? It’s cool.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Clearly no one told you what happened to the last false god that thought it knew what was best for humanity. ;) “Hope binds humanity to misery” is bullshit.
After a... not very difficult first phase, the Demiurge reveals its true form, and we split into three teams to take out its support orbs (modeled after the sephirot) and the main body.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really liked the setup for the last boss. The teams were the first instance where it was really apparent that the whole team was fighting together. Each of the three battles was happening concurrently, and destroying the orbs has a concrete effect on the main fight. I wish we’d gotten to do things like this more often, especially during the Shadow Thieves fight.
That said, the main body was actually the easiest part of the fight? All the attacks were really telegraphed, and not particularly hard to avoid. Except for the spear jab.
But it finished off with a full-team all-out attack, and that was awesome.
The desires began to return to their owners, and we get to bask in a job well done once again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Upon returning to the real world, it’s the next morning. Sophia’s happy that she got to be a hero, Zenkichi’s heading off to properly arrest Owada, and the rest of us need to head home, because we were supposed to be home last night. Zenkichi can’t figure out why we consider him a phantom thief, since he “only joined [us] to use [us]”. Which is silly. The Phantom Thieves are built on the bonds of friendship and stalking! It’s too late, Zenkichi. You and Akane have been adopted.
I’m a little disappointed we didn’t get to tell Akane the truth. That would have been great.
Atlus personally reaches out and pats me on the head, because Sojiro has the absolute perfect reaction to his kids coming home after a nationwide manhunt for them.
Tumblr media
I feel so valid making him serve Lavenza coffee and be completely nonplussed about a guy marrying Death. I love him. We’re so lucky to have Sojiro. XDDDD
The next day, the kids have a celebration party for their victory, and learn that Akira is going home the next day. This kid needs to catch a break. He can’t even have a few days to relax with his friends. X’‘‘D
Everyone goes to see off Akira, though we detour to Shibuya to meet Ichinose. A news report shows that Owada was successfully arrested, and apparently Ichinose tried to turn herself in to the police, and they didn’t believe a word of it.
Tumblr media
This is just highlighting my issues with Maruki. Even if he doesn’t think he did anything wrong to society as a whole, he never apologizes to them for what he put them through. Especially Akira. Ichinose turns around and helps them stop the final boss, and her last scene is her apologizing to the Thieves and trying to make amends for her actions. Maruki’s last scene is... “If things get bad, you can start over like me! Now we’re even!” We are not.
Sophia leaves to help Ichinose learn about the heart, Akira promises to come back for winter break, the Phantom Thieves go their separate ways once again, and the credits roll.
I’m gonna leave my final impressions in a different post, because this one is long enough already. So... look forward to that?

here, it’s 3 AM and i’m feeling wild so have a 10k word unfinished fic. key word is UNFINISHED, so don’t go in expecting a proofread work. some things will literally just say ‘ADD MORE’, lmao, but i thought i’d share this because i did put a lot of work into it, i just don’t think i’ll ever finish it...
it’s Goro Akechi / F!Reader. rated M for violence, some sexual content, and unhealthy relationships. i have not finished P5R and it wasn’t even out when i was playing this, so... yeah. with that in hand, enjoy i guess
Cancelled WIP [Goro Akechi x F! Reader ] 10k words, not proofed and not complete.
A familiar and delicious aroma filled the air as you entered Café Leblanc. Ren nodded at you from behind the counter as you walked in, hastily working to whip up several different blends of coffee. It was a lazy Sunday morning, and the ex-Phantom Thieves had decided to have a chill day, as Ryuji affectionately called it. An opportunity to spend time together was rare. Even if it just meant relaxing, being together would be worth it.
Ryuji and Futaba were already there. Futaba was tucked away in her usual corner, typing away at her laptop. She gave you a short wave from behind the screen. Evidently Ryuji had spent the night, still clad in a pair of pajamas while he flipped through a manga. He lifted his hand for a high-five as you took a seat next to him at the counter, which you gladly obliged. Morgana popped his head up from the seat next to you and stretched. You reached a hand over and gave him a chin scratch, eliciting a purr from him.
Between purrs, he spoke. “This still doesn’t mean I’m a cat.” “Yeah, yeah…” you replied, giving him one final pat. Morgana seemed satisfied and curled back up, keeping his head titled towards the door. “Morning.” Ren said, sliding a cup of coffee in front of you. You closed your eyes for a moment and leaned your head down, taking in the aroma. Perfection. You took a sip and grinned. “This is perfect. As always.” You took another sip of the perfectly iced coffee, which was sweet with a slight hint of bitterness. Just how you liked it. “You and Ryuji are the only ones who take it iced, so I’m glad I could perfect it.” Ren said. “Of course you could. Don’t tell anyone, but I think you make it better than Sojiro.” You winked in response and Akira chuckled. “Plus, you like us the best.” Ren laughed again before moving back down the counter to continue working on making coffee for the rest of your friends. Yusuke arrived next, a sketch book tucked neatly underneath his arm. He sat at the end of the counter and surveyed the scene for a moment.
“Ryuji,” he stated, opening up his sketchbook. “Don’t move. You don’t move either.” Yusuke said, pointing at you. You pointed at yourself, looking confused.
“I’d like to get a sketch of all of you today.” Yusuke replied, eyes already flitting back and forth between the sketchbook and the scene in front of him. “Hm, looks like I’ll have Morgana too. Ren will have to be later…” His voice trailed off and you could tell he was already in his own world. There was nothing else to do, so you intended to stay still for Yusuke’s sake.
A moment later Haru and Makoto arrived, arms linked together. They looked happy. They were the first of the Phantom Thieves to pair off, though you had noticed their glances and subtle hints of affection before they would admit to it.  You had seen the same actions between Ryuji and Ren, though they were much more coy about it.
You were snapped out of your thoughts by Ann bursting through the door shortly after, arms stacked full of all sorts of sweet tweets.
“Can I get some help?” Ann cried out as a box of sweets wobbled on top of the stack. You jumped out of your seat to help, eliciting a loud groan from Yusuke and a snicker from Ren and Ryuji in the corner. You helped Ann set the sweets down and she gave you a quick hug before heading to the end of the counter to sit with Makoto and Haru.
“Sorry, Yusuke…” You mumbled, and he waved his hand in the air.
“No matter, I can start a new one. Would you care to sit there again?” He said, flipping to a new page. You nodded in response, ready to head back over before the door chimed again. You felt your heart jump. Akechi was invited today, of course, but he often showed up late. He looked nervous as he walked in the door. There was a noticeable silence before Ren finally broke it.
“Glad you’re here, Akechi.” Ren said, nodding towards him. The rest of the group greeted him as well, and you could see the tension drop from his shoulders. Akechi’s face lit up when he saw you, his stride quick as he made his way to greet you. Out of sight of the others, he lightly grazed your hand. You smiled at the affection.
“Sorry again Yusuke, but I think we’re going to sit in a booth for now.” You said sheepishly, feeling guilty about stopping his progress again.
“That’s quite all right. I think I’ve got a new idea anyways.” Yusuke replied, not taking his eyes of his sketchbook. You could tell he wasn’t angry, but you still felt bad. Akechi’s light touch on your hand again brought you out of your thought. You picked the booth closest to the stairs to sit together, Ren and Ryuji not far from the two of you. Ren gave you a curious look when he noticed Akechi was sitting on the same side of the booth as you, your face flushing. He had always known about the two of you. He was too observant sometimes.
You turned your focus away from Ren’s gaze and towards Akechi.
“I’m glad you decided to come today.” You said, smiling at him. He smiled in return, and you felt his hand lightly graze your thigh. Much to your surprise, he kept it there, fingers light against your leg. You were no stranger to affection from him, but he was usually reserved in the presence of others.
“I’m glad as well. I wanted to talk to you about something later…” Akechi said, his face turned towards you. It often seemed like he was in his own world. “Privately. But we can spend time here now, of course.”
“Sure.” You said, glancing over at Ren again. He had returned to making coffee for everyone, but you saw him give you a smirk. You stuck your tongue out at him and you saw him laugh as he turned away. You turned your attention back to Akechi, who hadn’t said anything more.
Akechi’s fingers began to tap out a rhythmic pattern on your leg under the table. Akechi was more nervous than usual today. You reached your hand beneath the table and wrapped your hand around his, giving it a light squeeze. He seemed to visibly relax next to you.
Sometimes you wished that he was more open with his affection. Before his change of heart, he had been possessive, desperate for your affection and attention. Akechi was careful now, treating you as if you were a precious treasure that could break any moment. Still, he made his affection known. A knowing glance. A whisper so quiet you could barely hear it. His fingers ghosting across your back. They were moments you cherished. Moments that you wanted, needed, more of. Stripped away from his charismatic persona was someone who was hesitant but wished so deeply to be loved. To be needed. The past few months with him had been wonderful, but things hadn’t always been easy.
[ It had been months since the Phantom Thieves had succeeded in their goal of saving the hearts of the public. To most, you were just a regular college student traveling the world. To those closest to you, you were an ex member of the Phantom Thieves. After stumbling your way (happily) into the group, your life had changed.
Goro Akechi was one of those changes. You had found something special with him – a bond so deep that you found it impossible to live without him. A bond so deep that even his betrayal against you and your friends hadn’t been able to split you apart. A bond so deep that he couldn’t swallow his betrayal, leaving him to break away from the bonds of his old life to return to you. And yet, the bond was frayed now, in desperate need of repair.
That’s how you ended up back at your apartment, Akechi standing nervously in your doorway after stopping you on your way back from class. It was a bit intimate, your bedroom and living room being the same area. It wasn’t new to you two – but it felt as if he was afraid to cross that boundary now. Your communication had been limited since the disbandment. You were afraid of being broken again, and he was terrified to lose you.
Akechi eventually came in and settled at one of the seats on your kitchen island. You noticed he was tapping his fingers on the counter.
“I have a question for you.” Akechi finally stated. You plopped down on one of the chairs in your living room, giving him a pointed look. “A question?” You repeated. He nodded before continuing.
“Do you trust me?” Akechi said, eye contact unbreaking. He was intense, as always.
You didn’t want to lie. It’s not that you didn’t want to trust him… but he had attempted to betray all of you before his heart got the better of him. It wasn’t a simple thing to forgive. He carried sins on his back that he would spend his whole life atoning for. And yet, if Haru had managed to forgive him for ruining her father’s life, the rest of the thieves knew they should try too. Your feelings for him made it even harder. You knew better than anyone not to give it away yet.
“No.”
He let out a sigh in response, pushing his hand through his hair. “I suspected as much.”
It wasn’t easy to reject him like this. The moments you had shared, still tender in your mind. The way he smiled at you. The way he looked at you with such adoration. The way he had broken your heart. The moments you had shared together bonded you for life. Akechi’s reveal, and subsequent change of heart made you wary. You weren’t sure how to begin trusting him again. And yet, you still loved him so deeply that you couldn’t imagine life without him.
“But that doesn’t mean I’m incapable.” You said. Akechi looked surprised. “Of trusting you, I mean.”
He didn’t say anything in response, choosing to look down at his hands instead. His fingers were still tapping.
“Let’s start over.” You got up as you spoke and crossed the short distance, stepping in front of him. You put your hand out. “Nice to meet you, Goro Akechi.”
He looked startled. You watched him hesitate, unsure of whether he should touch you. He paused for another moment before reaching his hand out and grasping yours. You had missed his touch, and by the look on his face, he had missed yours as well.
“Nice to meet you too.” He said quietly, letting go of your hand. You smiled.
It was a start. ]
“Goro,” You said softly, squeezing his hand again. “Are you okay?”
He paused before responding, his thumb brushing against your hand while he thought. “I am... I’m just troubled by my thoughts today.”
You squeezed his hand again. Akechi often had unwelcome thoughts, as you had quickly learned. He was conditioned to be that way – to automatically assume the worst. To assume that no one loved him or cared for him.
“I love you, Goro.” You said, leaning into him. He relaxed into your side and placed a chaste kiss on your head.
“Do you want to talk about it?” You asked.
“Ah, I’m okay. Besides,” Akechi said, giving you a small smile. “We’re here to enjoy ourselves, hm?”
“If you’re sure.” You replied, smiling back at him. It was hard to get him to open up. He was guarded – your questions always deflected easily with his signature smile. When you had learned the truth from the mouth of the cognitive Akechi, you understood why he hidden himself away. When the two of you had begun your relationship, officially this time, he finally let his walls down.
[ The first time you went on a date with Akechi, you made a trip to Odaiba Seaside Park. It had been raining on and off, so you figured it’d be a quiet day. With the events of the past still fresh, you wanted to keep things simple.
Akechi had always seemed different with you. His voice was soft and sweet, free of anxieties. When he was with you, he took off the mask. It was a subtle change, but one you’d begun to pick up on. Before, he had hidden so much from you, his secrets and pain pulling him away from life. Now was a chance for both of you to start over, to experience each other as a whole.
The day had started off pleasant – a peaceful walk down the boardwalk with plenty of conversation. You could tell he was feeling at ease, and you were too.
As the sun began to go down, you and Akechi had decided to grab a bite to eat. The only stand still open was serving ice cream, which delighted you. After grabbing your cones, you made your way back down the boardwalk, hoping to find somewhere to sit. Akechi had started another conversation while you walked.
“Are you enjoying it?” He said, smiling at you.
“It’s delicious!” You replied, grinning at him.
Before you could ask him the same, a loud voice interrupted you.
“Oi, aren’t you that shitty detective?”
You looked up to see a group of people, now leering in your and Akechi’s direction. You looked to Akechi, his face still unchanged, but hand gripping his ice cream cone harder.
“Yes. Can I help you with something?” Akechi replied, his voice sharp. It was a stark contrast from his voice with you.
“We’re just wondering why you think it’s okay to show your face around here.” One of the young women in the group said, stepping closer to the two of you. “You’re real fucked up!”
You reached out to grip Akechi’s hand, tugging it gently. He didn’t move.
One of the men piped up next. “Yeah, and now you’ve tricked this dumb little bitch too! She must be real stupid to be with you.”
“Don’t you dare talk about her.” Akechi said, breaking free of your hand and taking a step forward. His face was contorted, eyes angry.
The group laughed, and Akechi tensed. Another member of the group spoke up. “What are you gonna do, little boy detective? You don’t know how to do anything!”
You watched Akechi’s hand ball into a fist. You took another step towards him, and glared at the group.
“Just leave. Please.” You said, trying to be polite, though you wanted to scream at them. You had hoped it would make them go away faster.
One of the women laughed. “Oooh, can’t even defend himself, he’s got his little girlfriend to stand up for him instead!”
“Why don’t you come with us, baby? We’re a lot of fun!” One of the men said. You could feel Akechi shaking now, trying to control his anger. You didn’t know what to do.
“L-let’s just leave, Goro.” You said, tugging at his shirt. He hesitated before he turned back to you, his face still laced with anger. The group leered and chanted at you, but thankfully they didn’t follow as you walked further down the boardwalk.
Akechi was silent as you walked, and you weren’t sure quite what to say either. You found a more secluded area and led him to it, turning to face him.
“Goro? Are you okay?” You said.
Akechi’s hands were shaking. “You think I’m weak. A coward.”
He kept his eyes downcast, nor daring to look at you.
“That’s not true.”
“But I couldn’t even say anything.” He replied, still looking away from you. “I’ve ruined things. This whole day.”
“Goro, please. It’s okay. Talk to me.” You said. He was still looking away.
You took a step towards him and he looked up at you, his eyes watery. “I failed you. Again. And I’m going to keep failing you, and you’ll leave like all the rest, and I’ll be miserable just like I deserve.”
“Goro…” You said softly. “Can I hug you?”
He paused for a moment. In times like these, he was usually berated or screamed at, told that he was better off not being in this world. But you had changed things for him, responding to his bursts of emotion with kindness and care.
He nodded, and you stepped forward, wrapping your arms around him. He was taller than you, but you felt him crumple in your touch, his face buried in your neck. You felt him shaking in your touch, his hands gripping the back of your shirt tightly.
“Shh… It’s okay.” You said. You were glad no one seemed to be around. The intimacy of this moment was something to be cherished. “You have me, Goro. I’m not going anywhere.”
You heard a sob choke out of him, muffled by your shoulder. He was still shaking. You led him to bench behind you.
“Let’s sit down for a minute, okay?” You said quietly. He nodded, and the two of you made your way to the bench and sat down. Akechi had been hesitant to touch you, afraid to let himself feel comfort.
“We could… We could still be close to each other?” Akechi said, sounding very unsure. You weren’t even sure if he asked a question. “If that’s okay…”
“Of course.” You replied, scooting next to him. His body was still shaking. You felt him slowly put his arm out, hesitating to wrap it around you. You looked up to find him studying your face. His eyes were still puffy, but the tears had stopped. “Do you want to talk more?”
He wrapped his arm around you. His touch was still light, but it made you happy. “Not right now. It’s just… you just look very nice right now. You’re just calming to look at.”
It was your turn to blush. You laid your head on his shoulder and heard him take a sharp intake of breath.
“Ah, I’m sorry Goro, I did that without thinking.” You said, quickly lifting your head. He was still looking at you.
“No, please… It felt nice.” Akechi said. “It’s just… I’ve missed you. So much.”
You laid your head back down and felt him squeeze his arm around you tighter. He leaned his head down towards yours.
“I don’t want to lose you again.” He said, lips lightly brushing your forehead. “Let’s stay like this. Just for a bit.”
You stayed there for an hour, bodies comfortably pressed together, silent. You didn’t have to use words to know that the both of you were making up for lost time. ]
Since that day at the park, you had made an effort to always communicate with him. To really understand how he was feeling, and to help him as best as you could. You couldn’t fix a person. No, that wasn’t possible. But you were doing your best to help guide Akechi through life now, encouraging him to seek help and begin healing.
“Are you okay?” Akechi said, startling you. You had been lost in your own thoughts.
“Just thinking about you.” You replied, leaning over to whisper in his ear. “And how much I want to kiss you.”
Akechi’s cheeks turned pink. He still became flustered from praise and affection, having gone so long in his life without it. You delighted in making him happy.
You wanted to fluster him more, but an exclamation from Futaba interrupted you.
“It’s movie time!” She said, picking up her laptop triumphantly.
“Wait, we’re not watching it on that, are we?” Ann said. Futaba had a fancy gaming laptop, but the screen was too small for all ten of you.
“No, no, Ren has a fancy surprise upstairs for us.” Futaba replied. Ren just hummed in agreement before taking his apron off, having finished making drinks for the group. Futaba rushed ahead of you, Morgana trailing right behind her. The rest of the group followed suit, leaving you and Akechi to follow behind. Akechi reluctantly let go of your hand and got up, but extended it again to help you up.
“Why thank you, my prince.” You said, giggling and taking his hand.
“Anything for my princess.” He replied, stifling his own laugh. It was silly, but you two had found pleasure in calling each other pet names.
When you reached Ren’s room you were surprised to see the changes – twinkle lights adorned all the rafters, and what used to be an old CRT had been replaced by a large flat screen TV. There was some sort of blanket pile set up in the middle, most of your friends already sprawled out. A salt rock was letting off a gentle glow in the corner.
“Wow, Ren, this looks nice!” You said. Ren shrugged, but you saw him smile.
“He wanted to make it fancy n’ all for you guys. Both of us pitched in to buy this awesome TV!” Ryuji said, giving Ren a slap on the back. Ren just rolled his eyes, but you could tell he liked the attention. Both of them sat back down together, Ryuji’s arm slinging around Ren’s shoulder. Not so subtle anymore, you thought.
Akechi sat down near the back of the room, patting for you to sit down next to him. You had other ideas as you plopped yourself in-between his legs, resting your back on his chest. You heard him inhale sharply. He leaned his head towards you, lips brushing the top of your ear.
“In front of the others?” He said, resting his lips on your ear.
“Mm. It’s fine with me. Are you okay with it?” You said.
“Y-yes. Very much so.” He replied. You twisted around to look at him and gave him a soft smile.
“It makes me feel safe.” You said. He hummed in satisfaction, snaking his arms around your waist.
Futaba stood at the front of the room and clapped her hands. You were happy that she felt so confident now.
“Alright, it’s time for our feature film. For today’s pick, we’ll be watching ZAW 2!” Futaba said, hitting play on her laptop and scrambling to sit down.
Oh no. You weren’t exactly a fan of horror movies, especially ones with lots of blood and guts. You shifted uncomfortably, already nervous. Akechi gave you a gentle squeeze. He didn’t know about your dislike of horror movies, and now wasn’t the best time to let him know.
The beginning of the movie wasn’t even safe – the screen was immediately filled by the image of a mutilated body and the sound of a loud scream. Why the hell had Futaba picked this movie? You looked around the room, finding some eyes glued to the TV and some joining you in averting their eyes. Makoto was stress-eating some of the chocolate Ann had brought with her. You glanced up and saw Akechi was watching. You didn’t want to ruin the movie for him.
The next scenes were even worse, somehow increasingly violent. You were staring at the floor now, your heart racing. You could have tried to tolerate it if there was a plot, but it just seemed like a cheap movie for shock value. You shifted your body so you could rest some of your face on Akechi’s chest, curling as close to him as possible.
He lifted an arm from your body to reach your head, his hand gently stroking your hair.
“Not a fan?” He whispered. You shook your head. “Don’t worry. I’ve got you.”
It was just a movie, but you felt reassured. He was always so gentle with you, his words never hiding malice behind them. He had always been gentle with you.
[ The first time you realized you and Akechi loved each other involved a grievous injury.
The Phantom Thieves had been in Mementos for most of the day, training and trying out different combinations of party members. Ren and Makoto had come up with an exhaustive list of combinations to try against different enemies, ranking them as they went.
You and Akechi had been in the party together multiple times today, both of you working together quite well. Though you tended to work well with everyone, something just clicked with him. Though the circumstances of his membership to the Phantom Thieves weren’t what you would call ideal, you and Akechi had made fast friends. He was always there to help you out, and you were always there to encourage him, inside and outside of battle.
And though you kept it hidden away from the others, you would often find yourself messaging Akechi late into the night, both of you unable to sleep. On hard days, you’d find him waiting for you after classes with your favorite drink, a dazzling smile on his face. Sometimes you’d even meet up and stroll through the darkness together, talking about whatever came to mind. You wondered if perhaps your bonding outside of battle is what made you two work so well together.
Ren had finally called for the last fight of the day, calling forth the two of you along with Ann. You were exhausted, but you knew everyone else was too. A few minutes later your party encountered a particularly tough group of enemies, Ren immediately calling out orders.
You had been hit a couple times, but not hard enough that you thought you needed healing. Akechi had insisted you heal yourself, but you reminded him of the limited rations the group had left. He reluctantly left the subject alone. The first two enemies went down thanks to Ann and Akechi. The last enemy left was enraged, its attacks suddenly hitting much harder.
“Just a little more!” Ren yelled. You watched as Akechi readied his Persona for a final attack and felt your heart jump when you saw the enemy suddenly rushing him, eyes ablaze.
“CROW!” You screamed, jumping in front of him without a second thought. You felt your body fly back, back slamming into the ground with enough force to crack it. The pain was immediate, searing and all-consuming.
Your vision was hazy, eyes heavy. You tried to move, to raise your hand, but nothing happened. You couldn’t even speak, a low groan leaving your throat instead. Pain bloomed from your chest, warm blood starting to seep from your injury. You tried to move again and your body burned, blood suddenly bursting from your mouth as you coughed.
You heard screaming, both your teammate’s and the scream of the shadow who had been destroyed. It was getting harder to see. Someone had come to your side, hands fluttering over your body.
“Hurry! HURRY!” You recognized Akechi’s voice, now strained and desperate. Someone else was beside you now, using whatever SP they had left to cast Recarm. You felt arms under you now, lifting you from the destroyed ground and cradling you to their chest.
“Oh god, please hold on. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.” Akechi said from above you, voice quiet and shaky. You felt something warm hit your face and realized he was crying. Ren quickly set a plan in motion to get you to the team’s doctor quickly, your body needing extra healing after how much damage you had taken. You wanted to reach up, to assure him you’d be okay, but you were weak. You felt your body start to go limp, Akechi’s voice above you again.
“Please, please stay with us—" He was saying more, but all you felt was endless darkness.
-
You woke up, body still aching. You wondered where you were, unfamiliar sounds and smells overwhelming you. It smelled… sterile. Your eyes were still heavy, fluttering as you tried to open them. You blinked, looking down at your body covered in bandages and hooked up to an IV. You remembered the screaming, the crack of your back as you had hit the ground and the feeling of the warm blood that covered your body.
It must have been bad, you thought. None of you had ended up in the hospital yet. Your thoughts were broken by a sudden voice.
“She’s awake!” You recognized Futaba’s voice, looking over to see her and Ren sitting next to your bed.
You tried to sit up, wincing as your body rejected the movement.
“Ah, don’t hurt yourself more! We were so worried.” Futaba said, she and Ren standing from their seats to move closer to you. You heard her sniff, watching as tears ran down her face.
“We thought we lost you.” Ren said, placing his hand over yours gently. You smiled at both of them, grateful they were here.
“I’m going to let everyone know.” Futaba said, digging her phone out of her pocket. Ren was running his thumb over your hand, his eyes downcast. You didn’t have any concerns about the gesture – his feelings for Ryuji were obvious. Instead, he seemed troubled.
“I’m sorry.” Ren said, looking back up at you. “I pushed us too hard.”
You simply looked at him, too tired to speak. You didn’t blame him. You squeezed his hand in response, trying to communicate your feelings. You sighed, your body urging you to go back to sleep.
“Rest, we’ll be here when you wake up.” His voice was reassuring, his hand still gently touching yours as you closed your eyes and drifted back off to sleep.
You were awoken this time by the sound of bickering.
“Shut up, Ryuji! You’re going to wake her up!”
“You’re going to wake her up with your loud mouth!”
“The both of you, quiet down.”
Ryuji and Ann, you thought. Morgana too. A quiet giggle left your mouth, followed by sudden silence.
You opened your eyes to find all your friends staring at you, eyes wide.
Haru spoke first, rushing to your side and grabbing your hand. “Oh my goodness, it’s so good to see you!”
You smiled at her and gently squeezed her hand back. Makoto joined her, placing her hand on your shoulder.
“We’re so glad you’re okay.” Her voice was soft, not as confident as usual.
“You idiots, you woke her up!” Morgana said, hopping up on the end of your bed. You could hear him purring. “Sorry about those two.”
Ryuji and Ann ignored him, walking over to greet you. Ann reached down to hug you gently and you leaned into her embrace as best you could, happy to see them.
Ryuji looked more awkward, his hand behind his head. “Thought you bit the dust for a minute.”
“Ryuji!” Ann said, standing and smacking him on the back of the head. “Not the time.”
Ryuji grumbled, pushing Ann over to wrap you in a hug. “Oi, she knows I’m joking.”
You weakly laughed and winced slightly under Ryuji’s hug, slightly too tight. Ryuji let go and you saw Yusuke hovering at the end of your bed.
“It’s good to see you’re okay.” He rummaged through a bag for a second, pulling out a small sketchbook. “I’ve worked on some things for you to look at while you recover. I know you’ll enjoy them.”
You smiled at Yusuke’s show of affection. Ren and Futaba were still there too, both of them coming to greet you once more. You heard a soft knock at the door, everyone’s head turning at the noise. Akechi stepped into the frame, his hands clenched tightly. You thought you saw a hint of anger on some of their faces. For what, you weren’t sure.
“Could I… come in?” Akechi said, his voice hesitant.
“Of course.” You replied, your voice hoarse. It was the first time you had spoken since you had woken up. Akechi stepped in, clearing his throat before he spoke again.
“May I have a moment with her? Alone?” He said. You saw Ryuji shoot Ren a look. Ren seemed hesitant, but finally grumbled a noise of approval.
Haru and Makoto reluctantly left your bedside, Haru squeezing your hand one more time. Everyone left the room save for Ren. He turned to look at you, placing his hand on yours again.
“Are you okay with this?” He said, looking intently at you. It felt strange. Why were they acting like this?
You nodded at him and he let go. He went to leave, pausing to look at Akechi. You couldn’t see Ren’s gaze, but the look on Akechi’s face told you it wasn’t friendly. Ren looked back at you one more time before leaving, gently sliding the door shut behind him.
Akechi stared at you for a moment before walking towards the side of your bed, eyes downcast. You eyed him curiously. All of this was so strange.
“Hi.” You said, smiling. He looked up at you, the hint of a smile on his face.
“Hello.” He replied. His hand hovered over yours, unsure. You moved your hand to touch his gloved fingertips, watching as his body relaxed. He laid his hand on the bed, fingertips still carefully pressed against yours.
Akechi was staring at you now.
“Do I have something on my face?” You said, weakly laughing. He didn’t laugh.
“You… I’m… I’m so sorry.” Akechi said quietly. You looked at him and watched as a tear slid down his face.
You were confused. You had no idea what had happened, other than the memory of the pain. “Sorry? What for?”
He looked startled at your response, body stiffening, his fingertips pulling away from yours. You missed the touch already.
“You don’t… remember?” He said, giving you an incredulous look.
“Not at all.” You replied. You heard him sigh. His hand was gripping your bedsheet tightly. “What happened?”
Akechi was silent, looking into your eyes again. He looked pained. “You took a fatal hit for me.”
Oh. You remembered it vaguely now, the fear in your heart when you saw Akechi was about to be hit. You suddenly understood why your teammates had looked angry – they weren’t exactly warming up to Akechi the way you were.
“I’m sorry. I should have been doing better, it’s my fault that you’re like this—”
“Akechi.” You said, interrupting him. You pushed your hand forward, fingertips touching his again. He didn’t pull away.
“It was my choice. I made a vow to protect my teammates. My friends.” You said. You were starting to get tired again. He opened and closed his mouth, unable to form a response. He just looked at you.
“I… I should have protected you, though.” He said, another tear rolling down his face. “You are the most precious thing in this world to me.”
His face suddenly turned pink at the realization of what he had said. You felt your heart flutter.
“Akechi… You’re important to me too.” You said, smiling at him. He smiled back this time, small and unsure. “You do owe me one though.”
Akechi chuckled. You felt warmth blooming in your chest, ebbing just a bit of the pain.
“Will you stay with me while I sleep?” You said. He nodded and reached to brush a piece of your hair back. The gesture was intimate, his touch light. You closed your eyes, letting your body relax as you tried to go back to sleep.
You felt Akechi slip his hand under yours, fingers gently sliding in-between your own. His skin was warm against yours. You realized he had taken his glove off.
You felt the warmth in your chest again before falling back asleep. ]
Another chorus of screams came from the TV and you curled even tighter into him. The movie was silent for a moment before a loud gunshot came from the screen, causing both of you to jump. You felt your skin begin to prickle, the familiar feeling of anxiety rushing over your skin. It was too much. You had to get out of here. You crawled out of Akechi’s lap and quickly went down the stairs, relief washing over you when the sounds of the TV were no longer loud. You sat in the furthest booth to drown out the sounds completely.
You had never liked guns. You didn’t find them appealing the way a lot of people did, and you had winced upon seeing your teammate’s during your first excursion to the Metaverse. What had sealed the deal for your feel was coming face to face with Akechi’s shadow, and the feeling of his gun pressed harshly against your cheek.
[ You wondered if your friends were going to have to drag your broken and bloody body out of the palace. You wondered if he would be able to handle it, watching himself splatter your brains against the floor. Maybe your thoughts should have been more urgent with the barrel of a gun pressed into your cheek, but hey, no one said looking death in the face had to be rational.
It could have been worse. Akechi could have ambushed you instead of joining you. Akechi’s help had given you the heads up on the majority of Shido’s palace. You didn’t blame him for not expecting to see himself there, twisted and full of malice. Even more, you didn’t blame him for not knowing how cognizant his shadow self would be – all the love he felt for you had seemed to turn to vile hatred in the mind of the other Akechi.
You hadn’t forgiven him, of course. But when he had texted you days after the betrayal in the Casino Palace, you couldn’t ignore the fact that he could help Ren. You couldn’t ignore the sobbing on the phone when you finally picked up, his voice panicky and desperate. And so, with Akechi’s intel and willingness, the plan the Phantom Thieves had set-up went into motion with one exception – the supposed suicide of Ren was not carried out violently by Akechi. Careful planning let the idea spread in the news.
Akechi had groveled at your feet when he finally saw you in person again. It wasn’t easy to accept his help – you would have refused if Ren had rejected him. Akechi had been eager to give every detail he knew, telling the Phantom Thieves the truth about Shido and his manipulation. Thus, the infiltration of the palace had gone smoothly, until you had reached the engine room.
All of you had split up to look around for clues. Everything was normal, until you found yourself on the floor, someone’s shoe digging into your back.
“Ah, the pet.” You recognized the voice – it was Akechi’s. But it wasn’t normal, no, this voice was laced with venom. Your struggling against the floor alerted the rest of the group, horrified gasps resounding throughout the room, something close to a growl leaving Ren’s throat. A moment later you were dragged up by your hair, a hard and cold object suddenly digging into your cheek.
“I thought you would have given up this vice by now.” Cognitive Akechi said, clicking his tongue. You felt the gun dig further into your cheek.
“The fuck is this, Crow?” Ryuji yelled. You saw him take step towards Akechi, who looked horrified.
“I don’t, god, I didn’t know this would happen.” Akechi stuttered out, panic laced in his words.
The cognitive Akechi tugged on your hair harshly, hot pain flaring in your scalp. A sick laugh bubbled out of his throat, and you saw your Akechi tense.
“You know, you were just a tool for him.” The cognitive Akechi said, pulling your face up to look at his. An awful grin was plastered on his face, eyes shining bright red. “Until he got too attached.”
“That’s not true—” You heard Akechi say, the cognitive Akechi interrupting him.
“What a fool you were.” His voice was practically a hiss now as he spoke. “You did all those awful things, and for what? To give it up for this?”
He kicked you in the side, and you cried out in pain. Akechi made a loud noise of protest, and you felt the gun press into your cheek harder.
“Shido was going to get rid of this, anyways.” He said, his faced distorted in a smirk. “And you, too. You meant nothing to him.”
“That’s enough.” Ren said, his voice low and dangerous. “Let her go.”
The cognitive Akechi laughed again, pressing the gun into your cheek again. “One move, and I shoot.”
You could feel your heartbeat pounding in your chest, chest heaving from panic. You were going to die, and there was nothing you could do about it.
“Oh dear, are you frightened?” He said, sneering at you. “I know. Let’s make it personal.”
The cognitive Akechi shot a devilish smile at your Akechi. “Come, then. Do it yourself.”
Akechi looked at you, eyes wide with fear. And then you looked up at your friends, some of their faces stained with tears. Makoto, though, had a look you recognized – determination. You were going to take your chance.
“Please.” You rasped out. You saw Akechi clench his hands into fists. “Please, Goro.”
“I can’t.” He said, his voice shaky. You met his eyes and gave him a hard look, glancing to Makoto next to him. You saw as he bit his lip – he understood.
“Hm, then perhaps I’ll make this drawn out?” You heard the Cognitive Akechi laugh and saw how Akechi tensed again. Akechi met your eyes, fear evident on his face. He took a slow step forward, and again, until he was within shooting range. He summoned his gun, identical to the one in the cognitive Akechi’s, and shakily lifted it, eyes meeting yours again.
The cognitive Akechi made a hum of satisfaction, lowering his gun from your face. A loud shot rang out and you saw the cognitive Akechi stumble backwards, groaning angrily. Makoto’s gun was in the air, smoke flowing from the end of it. The gamble had worked – the cognitive Akechi had been too self-assured, a trait he shared with your Akechi.
You scrambled away as fast as you could and heard another shot ring out, another horrible groan emerging from the cognitive Akechi. You turned back, looking between the two. Your Akechi’s gun was smoking, his hands shaking. The cognitive Akechi was on the floor, eyes wide and staring at you as he died.
It made you feel sick, stomach twisting in disgust as you watched the cognitive Akechi fade into black smoke, your Akechi collapsing to his knees. Your friends rushed over to you, smothering you in hugs and “Are you okays”, each of them talking over the other.
But it was Akechi you were concerned about. You silently got up and kneeled in front of him. A moment later you wrapped around him. He was sobbing, telling you again how sorry he was, how he didn’t want to be like this.
You knew he was carrying around years of pain and hurt, the sting of rejection from everyone in his life that was supposed to love him. He swallowed that bitter pill for years, poison seeping through his veins. He had to account for his own choices – you knew that. But you also knew that despite everything, he was worthy of more.
There was so much you wanted to say. Your heart was still broken – you knew this well. But in this moment, there was only one thing you could say to him.
“I love you.” ]
That day played in your head often, the memory of the cold metal against your cheek vivid and unsettling. It was only a few seconds later that you heard someone descending the steps, then a familiar voice softly calling your name. Akechi came to sit next to you in the booth, his arm wrapping around you.
“I don’t think I was enjoying that movie either.” He murmured, gently rubbing your shoulder. “Do you want to leave?”
Leaving would make you sad – but you had been unaware that today’s movie choice would bother you so much. Besides, on a lucky break, your group would be able to hang out next weekend as well. Time alone with Akechi sounded more appealing.
“Yeah. Let me just text Ren.” You replied. You sent a text saying you weren’t feeling well, but to tell the group you loved them and would see them next weekend. You heard Akechi groan when he saw Ren’s reply, which was simply a winky face emoji.
“Do you want to go on a walk before we go home?” Akechi asked, squeezing your shoulder. You nodded, and Akechi got up and repeated his actions from earlier. You exited the shop, locking the door behind you on your way out.
Akechi’s hand slipped into yours like it had a hundred times before.
Before, when you and Akechi had danced around the nature of your relationship, the idea of no one knowing what the two of you had troubled him deeply. Things were better now, as Akechi had taken the initiative to work on his unhealthy behaviors. Sometimes you’d still notice the way his jaw would clench when a stranger acted a little too friendly, or how his arm would wrap around you just a bit too tight.
[ It didn’t take you long to realize that Akechi was a little bit… possessive. You had been friends with Akechi for a couple months now – your late-night conversations now a norm, his presence besides you during fights a given. He was always checking if you were okay, and always wanted to be around you. You’d seen the slight grimace on his face when you talked to one of the boys in the group, especially if it was Ren.
You didn’t miss the way how sometimes he would say “my” before sweetly calling your name, or how he’d always take you to uncrowded areas to spend time together.
Still, you’d be lying if you said you didn’t you enjoyed his company. You saw through him the second you met – his artificial happiness was hiding a deeply lonely person. So, for the time being, you’d brushed it off as Akechi being insecure.
Once, Yusuke had asked you to model for an outfit he had seen in front of Akechi. By the look on his face, you’d of thought Yusuke had asked you to come over and fuck him. There was no romantic intent in Yusuke’s question – but Akechi was jealous. You accepted Yusuke’s request; you had no reason not to.
It had been a perfectly normal day with Yusuke. The outfit was an elegant, flowing white gown. Yusuke had you pull one sleeve down, exposing your shoulder. The dress hugged your hips and showed the curve of your chest, but in a way that you found sensual. It wasn’t anything you were uncomfortable with. In fact, you had felt beautiful, Yusuke’s small hums while he worked confirming that he was pleased.
During a break, you had sent a silly picture of you making a face in your group chat. Everyone had responded by saying how cute you looked, even with the silly expression. Akechi, however, had responded with something that slightly embarrassed you, a sweeping text of how you were the definition of beauty. The attention did make you feel good, even if his message had been cheesy.
You bit your lip, considering a risky move. Maybe you could send him a personal picture. Nothing too crazy – just a little more… personalized. The next picture you sent was just for him, a selfie of yourself in Yusuke’s pose. Your lips were parted, your hair wrapped delicately around your shoulders, bare skin peeking through. The picture cut off so you could see just the hint of your chest. It didn’t take long for a response.
Akechi: You look ravishing.
Akechi: But I am at work, you know. I can’t be looking at things like this, what would they think?
Akechi: Let me know when you’ll be done. I’ll pick you up. Be safe.
You smiled to yourself, knowing that you had riled him up a little. A moment later Yusuke came back, and you resumed the painting, having to fight to keep the smile off your face.
A few hours later you messaged Akechi to let him know you finished. You and Yusuke exchanged pleasantries before you went to wait outside, still dressed in the gown. The night air felt refreshing on your skin, the beautiful stars above you making it even better.
Akechi’s familiar black car rolled up a few minutes later. Akechi came out to greet you before you even reached the door. You noticed how his eyes had hovered at your chest before meeting your eyes. He opened the car door for you like he always did, and then climbed back in himself.
“Thank you so much.” You said, turning to give him a smile.
“Always. Someone as beautiful as you can’t be walking alone at night.” He said, smiling back at you. You just rolled your eyes, blush creeping over your face. A few minutes passed in silence as he drove, your eyes almost drifting shut to the soft music playing over the radio.
“Are you okay? He didn’t do anything weird, did he?” Akechi said, making you jump. His voice sounded a little off.
“Oh no, I’m fine. Just tired.” You replied. “Yusuke was the same as always.”
Akechi nodded at your response, turning his attention back to the road. A few minutes later you pulled up to your apartment, Akechi seeming reluctant to leave. Well… maybe you could invite him in.
“Do you want to come in and have a drink?” You asked. His face brightened immediately. Once you made it inside, you turned to find Akechi giving you a strange look.
“Is something wrong?” You asked. Before you could say anything else, Akechi had gently pushed you back into the door and captured your mouth in a kiss. When you didn’t pull away, he deepened the kiss, his tongue running along your lower lip. A small moan left your mouth, and you felt Akechi press further into you.
His hand had found its way into your hair, pulling you closer to him. He broke off the kiss for a moment, meeting your eyes. “You don’t know what you do to me.” He said. You recognized the lust in his, face flushed pink. His lips met your again in another fevered kiss, tongues exploring each other’s mouths. He pulled away again and you let out a whine of frustration, low chuckle coming from his throat.
“I can’t believe Yusuke had you all to himself today.” He rasped, voice low. He placed a soft kiss on your lips before continuing.
He trailed his tongue down your jawline until he reached your neck and started placing gentle kisses on it. You wrapped yours arms around him now, pushing his hips flush to yours. He pulled away again. “No one should see you like this. You’re too beautiful.” He whispered before returning to your neck. You could feel the noticeable bulge in his work pants, and you shifted yourself even closer to him. His lips pulled off for you a moment as he let out a strained moan before returning to his ministrations, lips now sucking and nipping at your skin.
He deepened his efforts, his bites making you shudder now. You knew you would have marks tomorrow. Really, you didn’t even know Akechi had it in him to do things like this.
“Goro,” You whined, and you felt his mouth leave your neck. “You’ll cover me in marks.”
He stood up and looked you into eyes, his free hand coming to rest under your chin.
“That’s the point, my dear.” He said, giving you one of those dazzling smiles. “Everyone will know that you’re mine.”
He pulled away, leaving you dazed. His words should have bothered you, but you were still in a state of bliss.
“Now,” he said, gently grabbing your hand. “I’ll get us those drinks. I’m sure you must be tired.” ]
But now, when you would remind him that you loved him and that you weren’t going to leave him, he’d apologize. You had helped him reroute his unhealthy behaviors to other outlets, reminding him that he needed to take care of himself too.
When his hand met yours now, it was a gesture of love.
ADD MORE
[ The first time you felt your heart break, it was because of him.
You didn’t want to believe it. No. NO. They were wrong. You pleaded with them, begged them. He would never do this to them. To you. Ren had put his hand on your shoulder, and told you that he was sorry, so sorry, but this is how things were. How things would have to be for the greater good. How the Phantom Thieves were going to be betrayed. You wanted to scream. But still, you held on, waiting with hope that they were wrong.
You held yourself together when you met up before the Casino infiltration. Your heart pounded when you looked at Akechi. He was acting normal, so normal that you wanted to shake him and ask him what he was doing. Was he really going to do this? Why? You jumped when you felt his hand graze your back, his voice soft.
“Don’t worry.”
You couldn’t even look at him, and he didn’t press you further. Did he know what you knew? No, of course not. He had been outsmarted, and he didn’t even know it.
Akechi had insisted on being on the team, and Ren conceded. You volunteered as well, much to Ren’s concern. Makoto had joined as well. He was right to be concerned – your fighting was off, your mind frazzled. He took you to the side and asked if you wanted to sit out for a bit, but you refused. Your nails dug into your skin as you spoke in hushed tones with Ren, pleading. Akechi gave you two a curious look.
If Akechi had wanted to say something, he didn’t. Instead, you watched as he took hit after hit for you during battle. You felt his gaze on you as you explored the palace, his hand occasionally brushing yours. Every touch felt like another dagger in your heart. How could he do this?
It didn’t take long to complete the palace. The calling card was sent as planned, and the dread in your heart felt even heavier.
The battle was tough, Akechi still taking hits for you, fighting as if it were his sworn duty to protect you. You wanted to cry.
When the treasure emerged, you allowed yourself a smidgen of hope, that maybe it wasn’t true. The group had to split, Ren giving you a knowing look as you insisted on going with Akechi. A look that told you it was true, that this was hopeless. You just grit your teeth and followed Akechi, his emotions still not betraying him.
He stopped, turning to face you. He looked sad.
“It’s true, then.” You said flatly, looking at him. His expression didn’t change.
“I’m sorry.” Akechi said, stepping close to you and wrapping his arms around you. You felt his heartbeat, quick and erratic. You wanted to scream, to hit him, but you couldn’t. You just stepped away, wrapping your arms around yourself.
“Why?” Your voice was hoarse, your eyes now on the verge of tears.
He was silent for a moment. “I can’t tell you that.”
“Of course.” Your heart was pounding now, every muscle in your body telling you to run.
“If you come with me, I can still protect you.” He said, his voice sounding weak now.
“Never.” You replied. You looked at him, fire burning in your eyes. You loved him, you hated him. “You lied to us. To me.”
“I—” He started, but you interrupted him.
“No. No.” You were crying now, starting to fall apart. “Fuck. Was everything a lie?”
He tried to step towards you again, but you pushed back against him. He winced at your rejection.
He opened his mouth to speak again, but you couldn’t bear to hear it.
“Just stop. STOP.” You cried out. You turned to leave and felt his hand grab your wrist, his grip tight.
“Please.” He said, his voice cracking. “Don’t leave.”
You turned to look at him, his hand still tight on your wrist. You looked at him, anger coursing through your veins. You loved him. You hated him. You couldn’t say anything.
“I need you.” He pleaded, trying to pull you closer. You dug your heels in, refusing to give him the satisfaction. “Only I can protect you.”
“You already failed, Goro.” You hissed at him, his hand finally releasing your wrist. You looked at him one last time before turning and running, his desperate shouts echoing behind you.
It didn’t matter anymore. ]
ADD A LOT MORE OOPS SKIPPING A BUNCH BUT I HAD AN IDEA FOR THE LAST PART
“Is this okay?” He murmured, fingers playing with the hem of your shirt. His lips were close to your ear, breath tickling your ear lobe. You nodded, but Akechi didn’t move yet. “Please, tell me what you want.”
You could feel his lips curl into a smirk against your ear. Devious bastard.
“Goro, please… t-touch me.” You said, voice wavering. He made a hum of satisfaction in response, his fingers dipping under your shirt now and hand running gently over your chest. Your breath hitched in your throat as he maneuvered his other hand under, his soft hands running freely over you now. His fingertips played with the edge of your bra.
“Do you want me to keep going?” He said. You nodded again. He didn’t press you for an answer this time as his hands slid underneath your bra, giving you an experimental squeeze. His fingers brushed across your nipples, thumb lingering over them. You felt him shift underneath you.
“Could I take this off?” He said, lips against your neck now. You felt safe like this, his body surrounding you.
“Yes.” You replied. His hands left your bra and moved to take off your shirt, gently pulling it over your head and placing it neatly to the side. He brushed your hair to one side, placing a kiss on the back of your neck.
“Ah, you’re wearing my favorite.” He said, pressing another kiss to your neck. “It’s almost a shame to take it off.”
“add more” You replied, twisting in his lap to face him. He was watching you with rapt attention as you moved your hands behind your back, unhooking your bra. You slowly slid it off, placing it on top of your shirt. He was speechless for a moment, taking time to watch your chest rise and fall.
“add more” You said, smirking at him. You turned back around, pressing your back against him again. He was warm against your back.
“You’re stunning.” He said, hands wandering back up your exposed body to caress you. There was no pretense with him in private. He said what he meant. For this, you appreciated him. He gently grabbed both your breasts again, fingers taking the time to play with your nipples. A squeak came out of you as he rolled your right nipple between his fingers, testing. You pressed your back into him, his hardness even more evident now.
“Do you like this?” He said, voice low. His other hand began to play with your left nipple, shiver jumping through your spine. You moaned quietly in response, and you felt his chest rumble as he chuckled. “I’ll take that as a yes, hm?”

At the best of times, a large group of teenagers in one area is a mild inconvenience to traverse with. In between rows and rows of filled chairs in a packed gymnastics stadium, it’s a nightmare.
“Man, it’s so effin’ crowded here,” Ryuji grumbles, half-shoving people out of the way. They learned early on to make him spearhead the group in packed environments, given that he’s the only one with enough guts to openly ask crowds to move out of the way. He’s like a pissed-off shepherd towing his sheep.
“What do you expect?” Makoto sighs, one hand gripping Haru’s wrist and the other clutching Ann’s jacket, kindergarten style. “This is something like the semi-finals, right?”
Akira shrugs, his shoulder rubbing against Ryuji’s from the sheer proximity. “No clue.”
“Didn’t she give you the tickets?”
“Sure she did, but it’s not like it came with some kind of gymnastics handbook.”
“Does anyone even know what type of gymnastics she’s in?” Haru asks, grip tightening around Makoto’s hand when a group of enthusiasts threatens to break them apart.
Ann’s eyes light up. “Oh, the one with the string twirling, right? She posted it on her Insta the other day, she looked so good.”
“She did! I can only imagine how rigorous her regimen must be.”
“Do you think she’d give me her secret? I wonder if she even lets herself snack.”
"I think so? She posted some desserts on her story recently."
Ryuji scratches his head. "There's more than one type of gymnastics?"
Makoto lets her head drop forward. "We don't deserve these tickets."
Akira turns his head back to the rest of them. "We're getting close to our seats," he says with a raised voice to combat the noisy crowd ('raised' only in the sense that it's slightly louder than his usual soft tone. Akira is a man of many talents, but voice projection is not one of them).
Someone from a step above them knocks their elbow into Akira's head, enough to make him stumble back a few steps, surprised.
Ryuji sends a glare at the stranger, eyes dark. "Hey, watch it, you motherfu—"
"And here are our seats!" Makoto claps her hands. "Let's sit before we do something illegal!"
Akira cards through Ryuji's hair, a silent thank you, I love you, but please calm down.
Eventually, he relents. "Fine."
Ann collapses into one of the bright red, plastic seats. "Thank God, my feet were killing me."
Haru joins her, grimacing. "Why are these seats so sticky...?"
"Because whenever they do a real good flip, the fanatics piss themselves."
"Ryuji, what the hell?"
"Sorry."
"Okay everyone," Makoto peers down at her phone. "Competition starts in two minutes. Settle in, but don’t go to the bathroom."
"Don't go to the bathroom?" Akira raises an eyebrow. "Are you Ushimaru?"
"I'm just saying that, given our position, we're basically stuck to our seats until everyone else leaves."
"For real?" Ryuji groans. "I really wanted one of those hot dogs they have, where they're yelling out 'hot dogs!' and shit."
"This isn't some American baseball game, dumbass," Ann snorts.
"I know that!"
Haru points past Ryuji. "If you're really desperate to go, you might be able to ask that man to move his tripod aside to make room for you."
"You're totally right! What a good senpai," he casts a grin at Haru before calling out to the man a few seats down from them. He's dressed bulkily for such a packed stadium: a thick black hoodie with the hood up, and a thick pair of black shades. To top it all off, he has an annoyingly big tripod in front of him with an expensive-looking camera perched on top. "Yo! 'Scuse me!"
Ryuji blinks as the man almost seemed to shift away from him. "Uh, hello? I just got a quick question."
To everyone's surprise, the man seemed to turn even more, his torso twisted in the opposite direction.
Makoto squints. “Maybe he didn’t hear you?”
“Whatever, it’s about to start anyway,” Ryuji falls back into his chair. “I’ll just ask him again when I actually need to go. Oh, look it’s her!”
Sumire stands with her coach, dressed in a bright leotard and a determined expression on her face, nodding along intently.
Ann leans forward over the railing. “Go Yoshizawa! Woo! Come on guys, we’re here to cheer!”
“Well, she did give us the best seats… it only makes sense that we make the most of them.” Haru says, before cupping her hands over her mouth. “Let’s go, Yoshizawa!”
“Hell yeah, Yoshizawa!”
“You can do it!”
“Gymnastics.”
“Akira, you suck.”
Sumire looks up, eyes brightening as she waves back enthusiastically in their direction. To their surprise, she brings her hands together to make a heart.
“That’s sweet of her,” Haru comments. “I wonder who that was for.”
Ryuji rolls his eyes. “Probably Akira.”
“It’s for Akira.”
“Definitely.”
“I don’t think so,” Akira frowns. “She’s never done that before.”
“Man, don’t try to be all humble—everyone knows she had a thing for you.”
“In the first ten minutes, maybe. Now she’s just a little sister,” Akira waves at Sumire. “Go back to cheering.”
“Good idea,” Ryuji takes a deep breath. “Give me a Y!”
“Y!” Ann yells back.
“Give me an O!”
“O!”
Makoto rubs her temples. “We really don’t deserve these tickets.”
The competition goes off without a hitch, Sumire taking first place with ease. If the people around them were exasperated with their cheering before, it’s nothing compared to how they screamed their throats raw when she accepted her gold medal. The stranger in the black hoodie kept throwing them dirty looks, but they didn’t care.
“I’m so thirsty,” Ann rasps, once the award ceremony wraps up. “Anyone have water?”
“Nope,” Ryuji stands, stretching his arms above his head. “I need the bathroom pretty bad, though.”
To their misfortune, people are still slowly filing out of their seats, too slow for their liking. There’s a gap in the crowd, but the only way to get to it is through—
“The man is still there?” Haru asks.
“It seems so,” Makoto says. “He’s probably a huge fan of the whole gymnastics scene, given the way he’s so careful with his camera.”
“Doesn’t change the fact that I gotta go,” Ryuji says, before turning to the man once more. “Sorry dude, gotta move past you for real this time.”
And just like before, the man steadfastly ignores him. Akira narrows his eyes.
“Excuse me,” he says, his voice dropping an octave lower. Everyone stiffens. The words he spoke did not belong to Kurusu Akira and is now owned by someone donned in a long, black tail-coat, armed with a knife as sharp as a tack. “Please move. My partner here is trying to walk past you.”
And still, the man doesn’t shift.
Ryuji places a hand on Akira’s forearm. “Chill,” he says, running his hand up and down in what he hopes is a soothing manner. Ryuji might be the one on a hair-trigger temper, but no one has anything on Akira if someone so much as looks at his friends the wrong way.”It’s cool, ‘Kira. If the dude’s busy, then he’s busy. We’ll just wait for the other side to file out, yeah?”
Akira smiles, just a little. “I love you.”
“Love you too, dude.”
“—but you’re too nice.” He rips his arm from Ryuj’s lax grip and saunters over to the man.
“Respect,” Ann mutters, impressed.
“Stupid,” Makoto rectifies, face palming
“Hi there,” Akira greets, faux cheerful in a voice they recognize as his customer service voice. “Still ignoring us? That’s cool,” he shrugs a shoulder. “We’re used to it. Not a problem—we know how to be heard.”
In one, swift movement, Akira stands in front of the tripod.
Ryuji covers his eyes, peeking through his fingers. “I’m dating an actual bastard.”
The man visibly bristles and looks up to send Akira a black look from under his hood.
“Can you—” he hisses, before cutting himself off. “I mean,” clearing his throat, he drops his voice to a low grunt, not too different from a child impersonating an old man. “Move, dammit!”
Haru frowns. “That voice…”
The man shoots her a dirty look, before quickly turning his sight downward, but it was too late: they’ve all already caught a glimpse of his panicked brown eyes.
“Alright, I’ll move,” he says in the same gruff voice. “Just leave me alone—”
Akira bends down slightly, squinting at the man who’s avidly attempting to pull down his hood even more.
Squirming in his seat, “Young man, you are being extremely rude and hostile and I don’t appreciate—”
Akira reaches forward to grab his hood and forces it back, allowing Akechi Goro’s hair to flow down on his shoulders.
They all stilled, frozen in shock. Eyes widened, mouths openly gaping. Only Akira’s expression remained unchanged; cool and filled with disdain.
Ryuji is the first to speak. “I really hope I didn’t just piss myself.”
“What—” Ann splutters. “What are you—why the hell—I just—”
Makoto’s hand are alternating between making a numbered list with her fingers and gesticulating wildly. “So you’re in a gymnastics competition, and you’re actively hiding from us, and you have a camera which is weird at best, why are you—”
“I truly want to give you the benefit of the doubt here, Akechi-kun,” Haru cuts in. “But I’m kind of struggling to find—”
“Bro, like, a camera? You weren’t even trying to hide how weird this—”
“I know a thing or two about creeps and—”
“Oh, would you all give it a rest, you damn dolts!” Akechi snaps. “Your insistent cheering from earlier is already giving me a migraine.”
Akira narrows his eyes. “You don’t get to talk to them like that.”
“I just don’t understand, Akechi,” Makoto’s brows furrows. “You could have avoided being caught if you had just moved out of the way before sounding the alarm bells through Akira’s head.”
Leaning back into his chair, Akechi shoots her an incredulous look. “I wasn’t going to do that.”
“Why not?” Ann asks. “Do you really just love pissing us off?”
“No, I didn’t even know you clowns were beside me until it was too late,” he shoots a glare somewhere down towards the mats. “I couldn’t have moved this camera because…”
Everyone leans forward, awaiting his response as Akechi trails off. He blinks slowly.
“Hello?” Ryuji asks, incredulous. “What the hell was that? Why’d you stop talking?”
“You know what?” He stands abruptly, words flying out of his mouth. “I don’t need to answer any of your questions like some kind of interrogation,” shoving his arms through his jacket. “I know my rights,” he plucks the camera off of the tripod and closes its legs with a snap. “I’m a detective.”
With a dignified tilt of his head, he turns to leave only for Akira to cut him off by placing a foot on the stadium chair. “Nice try.”
“Move,” Akechi spits through gritted teeth.
“Nope.”
“Not before you tell us why you were recording Yoshizawa-chan,” Haru smiles.
Ann points at Akechi like she’s about to challenge him to a duel. “We care about her too much to let this go, so fess up!”
Rubbing his temples, “You don’t even know what you’re saying.”
“Then explain yourself!” Makoto says.
“No.”
“Hold on, guys.”
Everyone turns to Ryuji, who’s squinting at Akechi. “We got these dope tickets from Yoshizawa, right?”
“Yeah?”
“So how did this geezer get his hands on his?”
Akira’s eyes twinkle. “Now that’s a fantastic question.”
“I’m sure you all had an absolute grandiose time finding a brand new way to annoy me,” Akechi drawls. “But you aren’t going to get a single word out of—”
“Goro!”
They all turn to the sound of a familiar voice, only to blink when Yoshizawa Sumire comes running towards them, dressed out of her leotard and into her black tracksuit.
Akechi’s eyes widen, and he takes a step back. “No, go away Sumire. I’ll—I’ll meet you downstairs—”
“Yeah, right! That’s what we’ve been doing, but then you didn’t show up. You got me worried! Thought the crowd ate you up.” Sumire rolls her eyes, before smiling. “Hello, senpais!” Bowing deeply, “Thank you for coming. It means a lot to us.”
Slowly, they all turn to stare at Akechi, who’s expression is contorting in a strange way—his lips are pursed, and his arms are crossed in a defensive manner.
“Um…” Ann blunders. “Yup.”
“It was our pleasure,” Akira covers for her, shoving his hand in his pocket. “Congrats on the win.”
Sumire lights up. “Thank you! Speaking of—” she turns to Akechi, hands on her hips. “Tell me you didn’t forget to record me this time. And please tell me I’m in frame. Last time was a mess.”
Akechi gives her a dirty look but nods all the same. “Of course I did, who do you think I am?”
“Hurray!” she claps her hands together. “Funny story, actually. At my last competition, I asked Goro to film me—”
“Sumire,” he hisses at her, but she ignores him.
“But people kept moving the camera and messing it all up! It was a miracle that I had one more competition before the finals came up—I seriously need that footage for practice.”
She laughs, light and trill; a perfect juxtaposition to Akechi’s dark, defeated expression.
“Okay,” Ryuji shakes his head. “What the fuck is going on?”
“What Ryuji is actually means to ask,” Makoto averts. “Are you two…”
“Friends?” Akira finishes. His eyes flicker between the two of them like he’s working out an incredibly difficult equation. “Are you two friends?”
“I don’t have friends,” Akechi insists, the same time Sumire beams, “We’re best friends!”
A beat passes.
“Would you all stop staring at me?” Akechi snaps, and they all immediately look away, but it was too late. They’ve finally nailed his expression, one so strange to see on him that it took much longer than it needed to:
Akechi Goro is embarassed.
“Wow,” Haru whispers.
Sumire peers down at her watch and yelps. “Shoot, it’s that late? Sorry, everyone, we have to leave. Goro treats me whenever I get that first place.”
“Does he now?” Akira remarks innocently. Akechi’s glare can wither flowers.
He drops his foot, allowing Akechi to stride past him a little too quick to be nonchalant.
“Oh, don’t forget this.” Akira swoops down to pick up the forgotten, handing it to Akechi. When their hands touch, he whispers, “Besties, huh?”
“I’ll fucking end you.”
“Third time’s the charm.”
Yanking his hand away, Akechi stalks off. Sumire sighs dramatically.
“Such a drama queen! But I should leave, too.” She bows once more. “Thank you again.”
“No…problem…” Makoto trails off when Sumire runs to Akechi’s side, casually linking arms with him.
Silence encompasses the group.
“That’s weird, right?” Ryuji finally asks. “Like, I’m not wrong for thinking that was really fucking weird, right?”
“Yeah, that was weird,” Makoto confirms.
“Really?” Akira muses. “I can kind of see it.”
Ann rubs her temples. “Whatever. That whole thing plus my dehydration just gave me the world’s biggest headache.”
“Ryuji, don’t you need to go to the bathroom?” Haru reminds him kindly.
“Huh? Oh. I don’t know, I think I’ve might have just moved past it.”
“Gross.”
“Shut up, Takamaki. Let’s leave, I hate it here.”
“Because you peed yourself?”
“I did not.”
“I hate you.”
Sumire doesn’t look up from her slice of carrot cake. “No, you don’t.”
Their usual cafe was near empty in thanks to the fact that it’s a Tuesday evening and barely anyone knows this place exists—only a barista is inside with them, trying his best to text on his phone in secrecy and failing miserably. She can feel his glare at her from across the table, though there’s no heat behind it. (There hasn’t been heat behind it for a long time.)
“No,” Akechi agrees. “I don’t.”
She glances up at him. He hasn’t touched his tart yet. “But you’re upset with me.”
His brows scrunch slightly as he rolls his answer around his head. This was to be expected.
“No,” he decides. “I’m not upset, either. But I honestly cannot for the life of me figure out why you would do that. I hate them, Sumire, and you know that.” Picking up his fork, he prods at his fruit tart absentmindedly. “You’re a good person, even if you aren’t nice—”
“Only to you I’m not.”
“—so you won’t do anything that would disconcert me in a legitimate way on purpose.”
Her shoulders tense. “Did it disconcert you?”
“It unsettled me, sure. But only because I knew where their tickets came from, and it certainly didn’t come from Takamaki’s profound interest in gymnastics.”
“Unsettled you?”
Akechi gives her an exasperated look. “You’re going to make me say it?”
“How about a deal?” she offers, smiling ever so lightly. “You say it out loud and I’ll tell you why I did it.”
Sighing, he heavily leans back into his chair. “I despise the idea of them seeing me… like that.”
“Like a human being?”
“Like I’m weak,” he corrects.
“Seeing you in a normal setting,” she settles. “With a friend?”
“You’re pushing it.”
Her smile widens. An odd setting is more accurate. It’s only in a gymnastics setting that she can really get a reaction out of him—rarely does he act the way he did. It’s his own brand of sweet that’s really grown on her.
“I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable,” she starts, setting down her fork. “But I don’t agree with what you said.”
“Shocker. Which part?”
“About you hating them.”
When she doesn’t continue, he kicks her shin lightly. “Don’t be cryptid.” Which is his way of saying talk to me.
Sumire kicks him back. “I’m not! I’m just thinking.”
She chooses her words with care. “You said something, a while ago,” she says slowly. “Like way, way back. It was kind of offhand, and you probably said it as a way to prove how much you hated them or something. But you mentioned that Akira—and the rest of his lovely friends—were the first people to really treat you like…a person.”
Akechi blinks, and she feels her eyes soften. Of course he thought (or hoped) that she’d forgotten a detail like that.
“And yes, lots of stuff happened in between,” she continues. “Lots and lots of stuff. Stuff I’ll probably never know about. But…I owe them, I think.” Sumire shrugs. “They took care of you before I could have. So I was worried that it bugged you when you lost touch with them.”
Akechi was quiet for a moment before he knits his brows together. “And that led you to try and cupid me with them during your semi-final?”
“When you say it like that—”
“‘Losing touch’ is very different from what actually happened,” he cuts off, leaning forward. “And just because they didn’t treat me like a famous asshole from television absolutely did not create some kind of fostered kinship.”
Akechi’s eyes never soften, never lose focus, but occasionally they can lose some of their steel. Warmth engulfs her as she watches it happen now. “For the record, no. It doesn’t bother me,” he hesitates. “Not…not anymore.”
Just as quick as it arrived, the moment passes. Straightening up, “And you? Does it bug you?”
She blinks. “What does?”
“That I make for a lackluster cheerleader.”
Sumire laughs, too loud for the near-empty cafe. Impossible. He may be a mess with words, would rather pull out his own teeth than confess vulnerability, but he’s shown up to every single one of her competition and sat through the entire thing. From warm-ups to the awards ceremony, it’s undoubtedly a grueling time to spend his day, and as much as he loves to complain about it, whenever she looks up from the mat, he’s always there in the exact same spot without fail.
She snags a strawberry off of his tart, making him click his tongue harmlessly at her.
“You’re more than enough.”

"We had assumed Alice's confession would clear our names," Yusuke said, tone a little despondent.
"Which means that wasn't just trolling," Futaba said.
"What is it?" Ann asked.
"When I was searching the web, I noticed some people saying weird stuff was happening here and there, similar to what we've seen so far. Almost none of them made the news, and it seems like everyone's just trying to ignore it, but..."
"What Gramps is sayin's prolly not bullshit after all," Ryuji glumly concluded. Kanji frowned again, before digging his phone out of his pocket. Goro idly glanced over.
"What are you doing?"
"Gonna ask Naoto if he's heard of anythin' suspicious along the lines of what you guys are talking about." He paused, lifted his head, and then looked right at Jou. "So, uh... full disclosure? Naoto called me up last night outta the blue and asked me to keep an eye on you. Didn't go into too much detail, which is basically Naoto for 'I've got a hunch about somethin' and want you to keep an eye out for me.'"
"Who's this Naoto person?" Makoto asked.
"Oh, he's an old friend of mine. Naoto Shirogane."
Goro nearly choked. "Shirogane? As in, the Detective Prince, Naoto Shirogane?"
"I thought you were the Detective Prince," Ryuji piped up, confused.
Kanji blinked, before his face lit up a little. "Oh, you're Naoto's 'successor,' aren't you?"
Goro cleared his throat and tried to regain some of his composure. "I am. Goro Akechi."
"Yeah, Naoto mentioned you a coupl'a times. Small world."
"What should do about our situation?" Haru piped up. "If they decide to scapegoat us, we'll never be able to clear our names."
"If there really are more brainwashing incidents out there like this one, that would mean there are more Jails," Morgana mused. "Do you think there could be more Monarchs out there too?"
"If there are more of those Jail things out there, then I'd think so," Kanji said. "Considering what we've gathered, going along with that man could be a viable option," Yusuke pointed out.
"Are we seriously gonna trust that dude?" Ryuji said.
"I hate to say it, but I agree with Ryuji," Goro said. "That man hasn't exactly been trustworthy."
"What other choice do we have?" Ann said, a note of frustration in her voice. "At the very least, his intel about Alice was useful."
"What do you say, Jou?" Morgana said, punting the decision to the leader. Jou sat and considered for a moment. He got Kanji's attention and signed, "Is it just you and Naoto-senpai?"
"We've got a whole team of our own," Kanji said. "And we've been workin' off and on with a whole Persona user organization, too. I can see if anybody can help here and there, but everyone's got stuff goin' on that they can't always drop at a moment's notice."
"Wait, an organization?" Ryuji said.
"Yeah, the 'Shadow Operatives,'" Kanji explained.
"Huh... I've heard about them," Goro remarked. "I wasn't sure if they were only a rumor... I hadn't even considered they might genuinely be related to Shadows."
"It's kind of reassuring to know that there's someone out there who can handle this stuff," Ann said. "That it's not just us."
"Would've been nice if we'd known about them earlier, though," Futaba said. "How much easier would things have been if any of us had known there were people we could reach out to?"
A lot of glances were thrown Goro's way. Kanji noticed them, but lacked any sort of context to understand what they were for.
"Still, it's good to have that to potentially call upon," Makoto said.
"Agreed," Jou signed. "In the meantime, we may as well take Gramps's deal."
"You're right," Haru said, "that's all we can really do for now."
"Wait," Morgana piped up, "even if we do level with him, how would we explain it? If he's going to understand what we've been doing, he'll have to learn about the Metaverse. Do you think he'll even believe us?"
"Given my group's own track record," Kanji said, rubbing the back of his head again, "I don't think he's gonna just take our word for it."
"We have no choice but to make him believe," Yusuke pointed out. "Otherwise, it's Jou on the line."
"But—But the Metaverse!" Ryuji said. "The Jail! How do ya think we're gonna get some thickheaded cop to buy that?!"
Yusuke let out a frustrated sigh. Makoto and Goro's eyes met. From the looks on their faces, they had the same idea, and they both knew it.
"We'll just have to show him, then," Goro said.
"Yes, we'll have to take him to the Jail in person."
"Wait, really?" Ann exclaimed.
"Is... Is that even safe?" Kanji wondered.
"The area around the entrance we used is perfectly safe," Goro explained. "We shouldn't need to go any further in to prove the point, anyway."
"We have one playable card in our hand," Makoto said. "We just have to go along with it for the time being."
"And anyway, with all of us here we should be more than capable of protecting one man," Jou pointed out.
"Alright, alright, if you guys are sure," Kanji said. "Guess I should come along, too, so I can get a good look at a Jail for myself."
"Let's hope this is not our undoing," Yusuke said.
"I'll call him back in."

After a bit of arguing, Akira gives his bag to Haru with Morgana inside it, and takes Akechi with him to Crossroads. If given the choice, Akira would have preferred leaving Akechi at Takemi’s apartment to rest, but over the last three days since the notice for the Phantom Thieves’ arrest went out, Akechi has proven that he will refuse to sit still even if it’s for his own health, so he’s coming with Akira.
Akira lets Akechi get a seat on the train and stands up, watching the people on the train mutter amongst themselves. The news bulletin is giving updates about the “dangerous thieves at large.”
“...my aunt had a change of heart before she collapsed...”
“I heard they’ve given mental shutdowns to children too...”
“...put her name on the PhanSite. I hope Shido catches those thieves before something happens to her. She may be a bitch but I don’t want her to die.”
“So quick to turn on their supposed heroes,” Akechi mutters.
Akira hums.
Crossroads is empty when they arrive, save for Ohya and Lala, as usual.
When the door opens, Ohya perks up, her eyes going from Akira, then quickly settling on Akechi. “What’s he doing here?”
“He’s on our side,” Akira says. “Shido doesn’t like him either.”
“Sweet. The enemy of my enemy and all that.”
“I suppose you boys aren’t here for a social visit?” Lala asks, pouring them each a glass of water.
“I’d really like this to be, but we can’t.”
Ohya sits up. “Right. It’s not great.”
“Sources don’t have a lot of info?”
“It’s not that. The ones I can get in touch with are happy to talk about how their search for the Phantom Thieves won’t rest until they’re dealt with and explaining some of their procedures like setting up checkpoints in and out of the city. They’re also teaming up with some tech company to monitor phones and texts.”
“Lovely,” Akechi says, “things we could’ve already deduced. Do you have anything that isn’t coming from propagandists?”
“You can tell a lot from what people don’t say as much as what they do. They’re talking a big game, but only have Sakura-san’s arrest to back it up so it’s safe to say they haven’t gotten anyone else. They’re focused on the major areas, the subway, Central Street. Stuff like that. And they’re being flooded with tips, so even though people are happy to turn you in, they also don’t have time to go over everything.”
“So the mob’s working against them,” Akira says.
“Right,” Ohya winks. Then she gives Akechi a pointed look. “And I still have some inside info. Like apparently Shido’s been fighting with this one government agency for awhile now, blocking funding and access for them. They’re called the “Shadow Ops,” and Shido is putting a lot of effort into getting them out of the way.”
“And how is that helpful to us now?" Goro asks.
“Enemy of my enemy,” Akira suggests.
“Well if we can figure out how to get in touch with them that’ll be fine, but it’s still more trouble than it’s worth.”
“What is your problem?" Akira snaps.
“My problem is we’re wasting time! You’re supposed to be the leader yet you can’t conceive of the bigger picture.”
“Akechi you’ve been shot.”
“Stop pretending you’re holding back for my sake,” Akechi says, rolling his eyes. “We could go into the Metaverse right now and get this healed. You just can’t do anything without your ragtag bunch of misfits around to sing your praises.”
“Then why don’t you go.” Akira asks. “Why haven’t you left? Is it because after we played you like a damn fiddle and you were betrayed by your boss you realized you might not be as strong or as clever as you thought?”
Akechi crosses his arms and glares at Akira. “Fine. You’ve got me. I don’t think I can take Shido on my own. I could use your help. Yours. But the others are superfluous, we don’t need them.”
“The others have saved my life on more than one occasion, and they’ve saved yours before too. One week, and we go in and fight like hell, but since you need me and you kinda owe me for that little ‘attempted murder incident’, we’re doing it on my terms when we’ve found as many members of my team as we can.”
“Does the thought cross your mind that gathering them all in one place might just be putting them in more danger?”
“I have to know they’re safe.”
They stare daggers at each other.
Akechi gives in first, getting up with a huff. “If you have any useful information, Ohya-san then please let me know. Until then I’ll be waiting outside.” He strides out the door, and lets it slam shut behind him.
“I’m sorry about that,” Akira says to Ohya and Lala, who he’s just realized heard that entire conversation.
“No problem. You okay, kid?”
“I’m fine. Any other news?”
“Not really. I can tell you that the police have the big public areas covered, but I doubt you’ll be going to any concerts any time soon.”
“Nah. But seriously thank you, this’ll help us plan our movements.”
“Stop by tomorrow, I’ll see if I have anything new for you.”
“Actually, do you mind if one of my friends does it? She’s closer at the moment.”
“Sure, just tell me what to look for.”
Akira gives Haru’s description, thanks Lala again, then heads out.
“Are we done?” Akechi asks.
“One more stop in Shinjuku.” Akira leads Akechi a few blocks down to Chihaya’s booth.
“Akira! It’s good to see you!” Chihaya says.
“Hey Chihaya. We’re here for a reading.”
“Do you know everyone in this city?” Akechi mutters.
Chihaya lays out the cards in front of them. “Do you need a specific reading?”
“Can you give me a reading that’ll tell me where my friends are?”
“I’ll do my best!” Chihaya says. She flips the cards over one by one, and there’s a familiar sensation like something snapping. Even Akechi seems caught off guard by it. Chihaya looks at the spread and frowns. “Hesitation will be your undoing, but don’t be reckless. And I’m not sure about the nine of swords, something to do with Gemini?”
Out of the corner of his eye, Akira sees the way Akechi’s eyes widen at that, then he quickly cools his expression again.
“That’s all I can see,” Chihaya says.
“Thank you.” Akira says, getting up.
Akechi walks back towards the train station quickly, and Akira trails behind. He pauses at the sight of a familiar blue prison door.
“Hey inmate!” Caroline says. “You wanna go in?”
Akira considers it, but shakes his head. He doesn’t want to see Igor right now. “Hey, Caroline, how much do you know about stuff that’s going on. You obviously know more than I do.”
“Well duh! How’re we supposed to help with your rehabilitation if we’re as clueless as you?”
“Then do you know where my friends are?”
Caroline’s grin fades. “W-we couldn’t tell you that even if we did know!”
“Alright, thanks.”
“What are you waiting for?” Akechi calls.
Akira waves at Caroline, and runs to catch up with Akechi.
~_~_~_~
After parting ways with Akira and Akechi, Haru at least takes a little joy in the familiar weight of Morgana in her bag. When they arrive in Aoyama-Itchome, Haru hangs back in an alleyway as Morgana pops his head out of the bag.
“Alright, wait until there aren’t as many students leaving, then slip around the back way there.” Morgana says, helping Haru slip in the same way Akira had been getting up to the roof to meet her while he’s presumed dead.
Her first stop is her vegetable garden. Despite everything, her babies have been growing pretty well.
“It’s too bad we can’t bring the whole thing,” she says picking the tomatoes and pulling up the carrots.
“We can see about starting a garden at Takemi’s,” Morgana offers. “There’s one windowsill that gets a lot of really nice sunlight, even in the winter. I like to take naps there, but I’m willing to give it up for your vegetables.”
“Aw, thank you Mona-chan,” Haru gives him a pat on the head before bagging up the rest of her vegetables. “You’re up next.”
Haru slips out the back and heads back to the alley, watching the school until Morgana comes out, Kawakami trailing behind him.
“Hey, slow down kitty, I’,- Okumura?” Kawakami stares at Haru taking in her new hair and clothes. “So that is Kurusu’s cat?”
Haru smiles and picks Morgana up, helping him back into the bag. “Yeah, he’s a very smart little guy.”
“So does that mean Kurusu’s alright, at least?”
“Yes. But we still need to find the others.”
“Any way I can help?”
“Do you have Shiho Suzui’s address?”
Kawakami’s eyebrows furrow in confusion, then she seems to understand. “Oh yes, I suppose that makes sense. I should be able to get it. Hold on.”
Kawakami walks back into the school, and ten minutes later comes out with a sheet of paper. One has an address on it, the other has a phone number.
“Here you go. And if you need anything, give that number a call and ask for Becky. I’ll know it’s you and be right over.”
“I can’t ask you to get more involved in this,” Haru says.
Kawakami laughs. “I’m already neck deep in the Phantom Thieves business. You’ve helped me and so many others, and more importantly, you’re my students. It’s my job to make sure you’re all safe.”
Haru holds the sheet of paper to her chest. “Thank you. Your support means more than you know.”
“Let me know if you need anything.”
Haru grabs a tourist map from the train station and follows the address Kawakami gave them. The Suzui residence is a nice small house near one of the smaller parks.
“Ready to go Haru?”
“Yep.”
Haru knocks on the door, and a middle aged man opens it. “Hello, who are you?”
“I’m here to return your cat!” Haru says, holding Morgana up to the man’s face.
“We don’t ha-” Morgana leaps out of Haru’s arms and runs into the house.
“Oh, I’m so sorry!” Haru says.
The man curses. “Stay here,” he says, running after Morgana.
There are more voices, and then…
“Morgana?”
“Lady Ann! So you are here!”
“Ann!” Haru calls, running in the direction of the voices. She finds an open door leading downstairs, and the man from earlier is there, along with Ann, Morgana, and a girl who must be Suzui, who immediately steps in front of Ann protectively.
“Who are you,” Suzui demands.
“Shiho! It’s fine, this is Haru,” Ann says, “she’s part of the team.”
“Haru Okumura?” the man— Suzui’s father, probably— asks.
“Yes, we’re so sorry for the disturbance,” Haru says.
Mr. Suzui waves her off, and then pinches the bridge of his nose. “It’s fine, I guess. Would you like some tea Okumura-san? You and Ann probably have a lot to catch up on.”
“That’d be great, thanks!” Ann says. Haru nods as well, and Mr. Suzui heads back upstairs. Once he’s gone, Shiho shuts the door and Ann gives Haru a hug. “Good to see you! I thought you booked it for the countryside!”
“A little misdirection on my part. It’s a bit of a story.”
“We have so much to tell you!” Morgana says.
“I’m sure.” Ann says, picking him up.
“So, I’m guessing this is the famous Morgana?” Suzui asks.
Morgana perks up. “Oh? You told her about me?”
“How could I not,” Ann laughs, “I mean you’re kinda important to the whole story.”
“I’m important!”
“Wow, you can really understand him?” Suzui asks, stepping closer.
Haru nods. “Yes. How much has Ann told you?”
“Everything, pretty much,” Ann says. She and Suzui share a look, before Suzui pulls up some bean bag chairs.
“C’mon, sit. I’m sure things must have been crazy for you guys.”
“That’s a bit of an understatement,” Haru laughs. “But do you want to tell your story first?”
Ann nods.

verse info - deadline ending goro
Tumblr media
Goro Akechi has always followed his own path. Whatever path that may be, he’ll follow it until the end.
Waking up in Maruki’s reality hadn’t been what he wanted. The gap in his memory from the engine room up until Christmas Eve didn’t help either, and the fact that there was something wrong had caused him to be on edge the whole time. He refused to stay in this reality, where none of his crimes had been committed, where everyone and everything was wrong from what he remembered.
At least Akira had been okay. At least he had remembered and agreed to team up and destroy this reality. Even when everyone else came to their senses, he had a feeling things would be okay. They had all been resolved enough to end this reality.
Well, that feeling had been wrong apparently.
Something went wrong. Goro doesn’t know what that something is, but suddenly things seemed to have came to a halt. Akira wasn’t calling them to gather, for Mementos or to explore the Palace. He doesn’t get it, they had a deadline, Akira wasn’t going to fail them now, was he? Was he going to hesitate when this wasn’t the time for that?
The deadline Maruki gave them comes and goes. Reality is still the same as it was at the start of the new year. Goro still remembers all that’s happened within the past month.
But no one else does.
The thieves have reverted back to how they were when this year started, Sumire still believes herself to be Kasumi and Akira... no one can get a hold of him. It’s worrying to say the least.
(It’s also terrifying but he’d never admit that.)
So what is he to do in a reality that isn’t his own, a reality that he doesn’t agree with, a reality that’s trying to make him everything he isn’t? A reality in which he’s alive when he’s damn sure he isn’t?
Carve his own path, and refuse to be stuck under someone else’s control for the rest of his days.
Additional Info:
A lot of this is largely headcanon based, since we really don’t know what happens to everyone else outside of Akira in this ending.
The details are very dependent on the thread/other mun, but the gist is that the thieves miss the deadline for whatever reason, and that Maruki’s reality is still the one they’re all trapped in. Goro still remembers everything since he refuses to accept Maruki’s reality, but everyone else more than likely reverted since their wills aren't as strong or something, I don’t really know.
Goro still only has Robin Hood and Loki, he does have the potential to get Hereward, but he’ll need some help with that somehow considering how he gets it in the first place.
How far the thieves got through everything is up for debate as well, but they at least got up to the roadblock in the palace that requires the visit to Mementos.
Understandably, Goro is not happy at Maruki during this verse. It’s still his fault in his eyes, even if he doesn’t know why they didn’t get everything done before the deadline came. (Goro’s not wrong, but it’s ultimately Akira’s decision on what actions they took, so if he hesitated at all then well. Yeah. This is all dependent on why it happened but it’s partly Maruki’s fault, along with Akira if that makes sense?)
Not sure if it’s possible for Goro to seek out the Velvet Room and/or snap the others out of their dreams again, but he’ll definitely try to do that if he can. He just wants to destroy this reality, and will do what he can to stop it.
If he finds Akira trapped in sleep up in Leblanc’s attic? Haha... it will be a thing for sure. Especially once he finds out it’s Maruki’s doing that he’s like that.

Persona 5 Royal Review/Analysis
Tumblr media
So I didn’t have a ps4 when the original persona 5 came out, so royal was my first experience with the game, as a result, I will be talking about spoilers for both the original content and Royal bc a lot of the additions seem mixed in aside from just the third semester stuff
let’s get the summary
Prepare for an all-new RPG experience in Persona 5 Royal based in the universe of the award-winning series, Persona! Don the mask of Joker and join the Phantom Thieves of Hearts. Break free from the chains of modern society and stage grand heists to infiltrate the minds of the corrupt and make them change their ways! Persona 5 Royal is packed with new characters, confidants, story depth, new locations to explore, and a new grappling hook mechanic for stealthy access to new areas.
So one of the things that I picked up really early on into my playthrough was that Persona 5 feels like a very adolescent piece of media, like yeah it is about highschoolers, but more than just its cast and setting, it seemed really fixated on capturing and adolescent mindset, there is this fresh awareness to the injustices of the world and a burning desire to fix it without much understanding of how to even began to tackle those problems, and the fact it stuck so hard to to that worldview made me a lot more forgiving of its flaws then I might have otherwise been, not that there isn’t stuff to critique about the way it tackles controversial issues, but at the same time i just had this mindset of, “well of course they aren’t going to get everything right, what can you expect from teens?”
Anyone who knows me knows I am a pretentious blow-hard, but I think P5 is a perfect example of just how important style is to anything.  So much of the pure glee and joy I got when I booted up the game came from the fun presentation and commitment to the phantom thief aesthetic, I have a lot of thoughts on gameplay that seem to be contradictory to the general consensus but to keep things brief, all the “sneaking’ around a palace, grappling from places, ambushing enemies, and performing all out attacks just all gave this sense of being cool and stylish that was great, even if the writing stronger, without those fun flourishes I don’t think I would have enjoyed my experience as much
I also think the more than any other game, persona 5 does a great job of making me thinking “just one more thing” you got a lot of confidants to fill and stats to raise to fill them so there is always something to do, at most during the story sections things sometimes dragged, but i was eager to finish them to get back to finishing my goals, for as long as the game was, this made it feel so much more manageable
Unpacking an entire 110 hour playthrough is kinda an overwhelming task, so instead I’m going to talk about my four favorite characters and hopefully that will cover some good amount of material
1) Goro Akechi- one of the first things I knew about this game was what a controversial character this bastard was and it turns out I fell on the side that loves him bc I think I have a thing for traitor characters, I have to say though for most of the game I wasn’t sure how I felt about him, I knew his true role going in, so it was hard to get attached to Detective Prince Akechi as most of his interactions with Joker felt like an act, however his Rank 8 confidant link, when he not only pulls out a gun on you and challenges you to an one on one fight but also freaking throws a glove to challenge you in a duel I was like “oh so you’re a little bitch boy then!” and never turned back
To me part of what makes him so compelling is just how stubbornly he is set on his path straight to Hell, a lot of ppl were moved by his tragic backstory but honestly it does little for me, I think it is important to consider, but you have to remember he approached Shido about his powers first and basically volunteered to be his personal assassin, still it is hard to ignore that sense of lost potential, in a way I can see how getting to pretend to be a part of a safe and welcoming team environment almost made things worst because he just kept feeling like, “why wasn’t I allowed to have this earlier” and just too tied to his current path of self-destruction to waver from it, like even the fact the Phantom Thieves and he had the same goals regarding Shido in the end, he couldn’t side with bc that would mean acknowledging all the murder he did was for nothing, so they just continued to be another target on his list, made all the more dangerous bc of the affection he held for them
That said I don’t think I would have liked him so much without Royal’s updates, I mentioned Rank 8 being a key moment for me but aside from that, the fight with him in Shido palace had so much going on, it kinda dulled the weight of any one of the numerous revelations, 3rd semester kinda brought in the perfect amount and balance of the different sides of Akechi, the minute he appeared I swear me and my brother cheered in joy, obvious spoilers for the rest of it
I had seen 3rd semester Akechi called “feral” and while he is still as horny for murder as ever, i don’t really think that fits, there is still a sense of restraint to his actions, yet he doesn’t mask his true intentions and feelings so much, what I like is that his rudeness and outbursts come off as very deliberate and planned, as if he enjoys exposing the contrast between his “pleasant” reputation and his true bitterness, and with the reveal that oops he is supposed to be dead, you still have that determined “don’t be a fucking pussy, just pull the trigger,” attitude, I really like the dynamic that forms between a Joker that just wants the best for him and an Akechi that just emphatically refuses to be saved in anyway, he is an easy character to woobify but I love how canon just at every turn doesn’t let you ever see his true vulnerability even if we all know it exists down there, also just something about hearing him curse is always so much fun and delightful
TLDR: I have a lot of feelings about this edgy bastard and may or may not already have a playlist for him
2) Makoto Niijima- another character I had an interesting relationship with, while from the start she seemed like my type, the overwhelming love for her kinda made my hipster side apprehensive, however predictably I was won over and I did romance her in the end (what can I saw my Joker is into brunettes)
Part of what makes her stick out so much to me, is how the game felt much less afraid to show her unlikable in comparison to other characters, i usually don’t complain or really notice this but more than any other game series I’ve played, there is definitely a lot of self-insert fantasy elements involved, ppl rip the newer FE games apart for that, but I never really saw it as the terrible as the cast had dozens of life changing interactions with other characters, the fact most of the interaction we see are through Joker’s eyes, and the fact that he is the catalyst to changing several adults’ lives made this element a lot more noticeable
But not only does Makoto take an antagonistic role at first, but they let her be so smug and annoying that I probably hated her with the same passion as the characters themselves, yet even when she comes over to or sides, her flaws are still pretty open, like when trying to help out Futuba, she definitely had that air of, “neurotypical trying too hard to make you normal” that was understandable but still annoying, and I appreciate it bc it made the contrast between her good points all the sharper
I kinda wanted to roll my eyes at first at her archetype as an honors student, bc yeah i was a nerdy student who didn’t know how to connect with my peers and just kinda subconsciously sucked up to adults bc I didn’t know what else to do, but in comparison to the teeming tragic backstories involved, you can see a stark difference in scale, yet Makoto is just carrying all this familiar teenage girl anger that reminds me a lot of Serena from Arc V, and getting to see her embrace it is very cathartic, I also really enjoyed her confidant which was surprising after seeing everyone tear into it so much, I feel like a lot of ppl’s confidant’s centered around other ppl and it didn’t just start off with the Eiko stuff, you see her Makoto want to change from the sheltered snobbish life she has kinda trapped herself in and rediscover her dream of being a police commissioner, I also found it fitting for her to also kinda figure that out through her own little investigation and to see that exploration of justice explored through her acting with a third party
The fact she is related to Sae also gives her interesting relationships we get to see from a different POV, and a greater investment in arcs outside her own, it just naturally gives her the feeling of being more well-rounded to have it spread out, and while her romance stuff did have the same sort of fantasy elements (that I greatly self-indulged in) overall I never felt like Joker was “saving” her in some way but growing and exploring along sides her
Overall, a great character and while i think best girl debates are dumb, I will not stand for hearing her described as worst girl
3) Ann Takamaki- honestly before I got this game I expected her to be the “main girl” with a lot of popularity and focus so seeing how little love she gets was heartbreaking for me, bc she is part of what made the early phantom thieves so enjoyable
I’ve heard the discussions about the issues around her sexualization and I think things on that access come out to be a wash, the developers kinda brush near some interesting ideas about the struggles women face with sex and attraction but don’t really know what to do with that, and so I think trying to trace and overall arch one way or another about her and her body issues is kinda a lesson in futility
in the end though what made her click for me is just how much fun her personality is, like I feel like in other stories her cheerfulness might come off as generic, but the fact that she is introduced so depressed and sullen makes her attitude shift come off as refreshing, like we know she can be serious, but the fact she isn’t being repeatedly sexually harassed by her teacher gives her like plenty of reason to goof off and enjoy herself
Again despite all the criticism I really enjoyed her confidants, the Mika stuff was honestly barely a blip in the thing and most of it alternated between her shooting the breeze and just having fun and still dealing with that lingering guilt and issues surrounding Shiho and just not having been able to save a close friend when she really needed her, I think the contrast is very much needed, especially to keep things from feeling like wallowing, which i felt was a problem with some other confidants
In the end though the main reason i didn’t romance her was bc as much as I liked her as a character, I didn’t want her to be with Joker specifically, i wanted to support her and see her finally confess her feelings to Shiho and the two of them go ride off into the sunset lol, still there’s a reason I reached rank 10 with her first
4) Takuto Maruki- lol so in this section I’m going to basically go into all my 3rd semester thoughts, again the first leg of his confidant was kinda dull, but I was prioritizing him bc of the deadline, once we got into his personal past that is where I got interested
On one hand part of the charm was just getting to see a more adult story, while there are other adult confidants I found the grad school and like academic stuff relatable, plus like the little moment with the steamed glasses was very funny, he’s just a down to earth guy and his kindness is genuine
However when he stepped up as the antagonist in the third semester, that’s when he got interesting, I found the conflict itself of a dream world to be kinda simple, aside from the fact obviously we need to oppose this for a plot to happen, Persona 5 is all about this humanist approach to personal growth and change, most of what I found fascinating about Maruki was the kinda self-martyring narcissism to his approach, like aside from treat the phantom thieves with kid gloves at time and just doing his best to avoid being a bad guy, there is this simmering resentment he masks and tries to replace with his desire to basically save the world, rather than deal with his own drama and baggage he tries to invest his energy into solving other problems
And you can see some of the parallels between him and the phantom thieves that points out some of hypocrisy of themselves, calculating the exact risks and harms of altering ppl through the Metaverse is hard to do due to a variety of factors, personally I don’t even have other Persona games to look to, but in general while it is for the greater good, the phantom thieves basically impose their will onto ppl who didn’t consent to that change, and in the end they decide to oppose Maruki purely based on their desires to not live in it, the game doesn’t do much with it, but I found the contrast more interesting than the Holy Grail one, plus his boss battle was more fun bc you actually got to use the main mechanic of the game, exploiting weaknesses and baton passing
But yeah all this comes to a head at the latter half of the boss fight where he just is so desperate and refuses to lose, it is like abundantly clear that this dream world is much more for himself than it is for anyone else, it is a desire to turn all his trauma into something more meaningful than just pain, and nothing shows that more clearly than the fact he fistfights a high schooler even after he has basically lost and tries to let himself die rather than face the consequences of his lost.  All in all I think he was the my favorite antagonist and palace holder
Some last thoughts I couldn’t fit elsewhere: Casino was my favorite palace, while weak story-wise, Okumura was far from my least favorite palace gameplay-wise and his boss fight as frustrating as it was might be my favorite for engaging with the player, if anything my least favorite palace was Futaba’s, my favorite showtimes are probably Morgana/Ann, Makoto/Ryuji, and Joker/Kasumi, Caroline and Justine are a delight and I really miss them, Tycoon is addicting and distracted me from being able to beat the game for a while
I got more hot takes I might elaborate on in length in the future, but in conclusion this is another rec where I can see and understand ppl being disappointed in some of the writing and its quality but at the same time i think there is still value ppl are too quick to dismiss and definitely multiple reasons to still enjoy it, I think this is going to stick with me for longer than I first thought it wound

Post Glory
Fandom: Persona 5
Pairing: Akira/Reader, Ryuji/Reader
Warnings: Heavy spoilers, explicit depictions of depression, intense grieving, and trauma.
Notes: Can we talk about how much trauma the Phantom Thieves have been through in canon
Dedicated to @ao3-actually-android <3
[I]
November 1st.
The receptionist at the front desk glances at you from under her bangs for the fourth time. She adjusts the collar of her shirt and types something with a flutter of her hands. From the corner of the waiting room, a member of your security team stares at her.
You pick up one of the magazines on the table in front of you. The glossy pages pass between your fingers, and several diagrams of the brain pop up with its functions outlined. Terms like depression and anxiety and trauma stand out on almost every page. They cycle through your head again, but this time it’s not three hours after you swallowed sleeping pills.
Breathing on beat with the ebbing and flowing of the waiting room’s music makes your head less congested.
A door locks the waiting room off from the offices, and a woman in a light pink dress steps through. Her voice carries your name. When you stand up and gesture for your security team to stay put, she smiles at you.
“Hi,” she says as she leads you to her office. “My name is Kaede. It’s a pleasure to meet you.” She tells you her qualifications.
“Pleasure to meet you, too! I’m sorry I had to reschedule at the last minute. It’s been pretty hectic.”
By hectic do you mean being fused with the fibers of your bed? Or avoiding the growing mountains of clutter that sprung up in your room? How about how it’s taxing to grab your phone charger from the floor? Or worst of all, not being able to articulate why you can’t do anything, instead masking it with “busy” or “hectic” or “sorry, I can’t do that today.”
“That’s no problem. Our specialized program is very flexible with our clients’ schedules.” She opens her office door for you. You take the seat next to her desk, and while you marvel at the cohesion of colors in her office, she sits behind her desk, clicks her mouse, and brings up a tab on the computer. “Before we begin, everything we talk about here is strictly between us. Nothing will be shared unless you become a threat to yourself or others.”
“Okay.”
“So, I read over your personal statement, and you mentioned you made an appointment for therapy because you feel untethered. Can you elaborate on what lead to that feeling?”
“Sure, so I’ll start with the Phantom Thieves.”
[II]
August.
Café Leblanc’s red closed sign protects you from the swarming streets. Hives of reporters frenzy outside, lanyards around their necks and cameras in hand. Your hand knocks against the salt and pepper shakers as the others crowd in the booth, with Makoto next to you. Across from you, Ryuji inhales an appetizer.
Futaba glares at Yusuke, who sips tea from a white cup. She pushes her glasses up and scrunches her nose.
“Inari, acknowledge that your left leg is shorter than your right,” she says.
“Nonsense, my legs are symmetrical, that I can assure you.”
She pulls out her phone and ignores her cup of coffee, which is four sizes too big for her. You and Makoto exchange glances.
You lean over the table to come out from the corner. “And what’s the point of arguing over Yusuke’s leg difference, Futaba? You’ve both been squabbling more ever since. . .”
Futaba halts trying to pull up Yusuke’s medical records. Sojiro stops waxing the bar just for a minute, his pink shirt now too vibrant for the solemnity washing over his face. The legs of the Phantom Thieves sit around the table, but Akira’s absence comes with its own ghost. Two years and his ghost still follows.
Makoto seems like she’s on the other side of the world, now, from you.
Akira who solves everything. Akira who acts as the unifying pillar. He makes you ache. He makes you lonely, untethered. The thrills, the disguises, the abilities, they all have his name on them. Everything about him scrambles you.
“Anyway.” You cough. “I’ve been thinking we should do something together since we’re all off right now. You know, like the good ol’ days.”
Silence resounds in Leblanc, but Ryuji grins and it warms your heart. “That’s awesome! Whaddya say, guys?” He looks around at everyone, and his enthusiasm brings everyone back together.
“That would be nice, especially since it’s been so long,” Makoto says. She shuts her eyes for a second. “Do you have anything specific in mind?”
You hum. “How about the beach? I think the last time we all went together was when we went to Hawaii a few years ago. We could pick up a game of beach volleyball!”
“And it’d be a good chance to get some sun!” Ann says.
Everyone takes out their phone calendars, and Makoto, the master of organization herself, makes quick work of it. “How does the last Saturday this month sound for everyone?” she asks.”That way we can avoid Autumn from September to November.”
November.
November.
November.
It takes you away. It stuffs your heart in your throat. Everyone else continues planning, unfazed, but Ryuji notices. And his smile dims.
Makoto calls your name, but it doesn’t register. So does Ann.
“Wendy.” Futaba puts down her phone.
You blink. Wendy. Wendy. Your real name doesn’t bring you out of it. Wendy, your alias, with a fishing hook on it tugs you out of Neverland.
“Oh, sorry.” You blink again for good measure and to reassure everyone you aren’t a stone statue. “It’s just been a. . .” Hard? Debilitating? Exhaustive for reasons you can’t articulate? “Busy time. I guess it caught up with me all at once.” There it is. Busy.
“Happens to the best of us.” Makoto smiles. “Does that date work for you?”
“Absolutely,” you say without glancing at your calendar.
Over the next fifteen minutes the Phantom Thieves disperse—Ann with a modeling gig she’s got to make, Makoto for a lunch with Sae, Yusuke to read up on art theory, Haru for a meeting, and Futaba to make memes. Ryuji is the only one who stays.
Leblanc’s quietness disturbs Ryuji to his core. You see it by the way he fidgets and leans back to yawn. When he knows you’ve caught him, he looks away.
“Hey,” he says.
“Hey. What’s up?”
Sticking his elbow on the bar, he puts his hand on the side of his neck. “You can talk to me if you need to.”
Right. November. Robin Hood. Goro.
“Thank you, Ryuji.” You avert your eyes downward. “But this is something personal.”
He leans back against the booth, putting more distance between you two, and he looks. . .he looks something you can’t decipher. Wounded? No, small. After a second he brings back his smile to mend the air. “No problem. Just gotta look out for one of my best buds.”
“Hey, do you know if Morgana is stil. . .”
“Upstairs? Yeah, I think he sleeps up there sometimes, since, you know.”
“Let’s invite him to the beach with the rest of us.”
“The cat? And sand ? Now that’s something I gotta see.”
“Don’t be mean, Ryuji!”
When he laughs you have to choke down your own. The light in Leblanc hits him just right, and he looks untouched by the corruption, by the palaces, by Yaldabaoth. Hope lives in his eyes and dreams light up his cheeks.
November’s weight sits on your shoulders. Akechi Goro’s death lingers. The Robin Hood to your Wendy is sleeping. And to think, he was eighteen.
Your brother would have been twenty this year.
[III]
The beach concaves away from the rest of society. Stray beach towels spot the sand and the waves edge up to reach for their ends. Cliff edges meet the ocean under the inky new moon sky.
Tiny lights hang up on a string and frame the entrance of the restaurant you eat at. Morgana peers at Ann from the stool next to her with hearts in his eyes. Sometimes he tries to steal a glance at Futaba’s phone, only for her to yank it close to her chest. If the beach behind you disappeared, no one would blink twice.
Morgana wanders over to you and Ryuji and hops on one of the two empty stools that separate you both from everyone else. His lip curls and a smile sneaks out. You shield your bowl of ramen in case he decides to pounce on the bar. There’s not a chance in hell you’re letting him knock over this art; a prepared egg sliced clean in half with its golden yolk on display, a spread of colors blended together, and flavors that glide over your tongue and keep you coming back for more.
“Looks like you got burned, Ryuji.” He licks his paw and glances at Ryuji from the corners of his eyes.
Ryuji’s lips screw, and he tries to cross his arms but winces because of the sunburn spread over his body. “It’s not like I knew the sun was gonna be raging today.” He looks at you. “And you knew and didn’t tell me!”
You laugh. “Sorry, but you should’ve brought the sunscreen anyway.”
“Yeah, yeah, whatever. At least I wasn’t afraid to get in the water.”
A smirk cuts your lips, and you cover Morgana’s ears. “Don’t make fun of him! Of course he wouldn’t get in the water!” Turning to Morgana, you coo at him in a voice you know makes his skin crawl. “That punk didn’t mean it, Morgana. Don’t listen to him. I’ll protect you.”
“Don’t act like you didn’t get in, either! And who are you callin’ a punk?”
When you uncover Morgana’s ears, he takes the chance to slip away.
“Oh come on, Ryuji, you were being a little punk-y.”
“Was not!”
“Really? Then maybe we should get everyone else’s opinions.”
Before you can call out to everyone and make Ryuji’s skin even brighter, he hoists you up and throws you over his shoulder. He winces but starts walking to the shoreline.
“Did you forget you were sunburned?”
Two beats of silence echo between you two before he answers. “It’s no big deal. Besides, you’re getting wet at least once today.”
The fool. The absolute buffoon. The heat under your face erupts.
“You’re hopeless, Ryuji.”
He says something you don’t catch because blood detonates in your ears over and over again. Your heart chokes on an overload of sugar. It’s buried in a sugary grave. You protest by muttering into his shoulder.
Only a few inches of space are between you and the water by the time he stops walking. He’s a few inches shy of being chest-deep. If you flick your foot down, you’d skim the water for sure, but there’s no fun in tearing his dream of dunking you away.
“Hold on, gimme a sec.”
That doesn’t sound good.
It isn’t.
He shifts you around and you flail, then you wind up in his arms. Your heart, stuffed with sugar, is revived by the way he looks at you. Light rosy tinges whip over his cheeks, and he turns his head away from you for a second.
Once he collects himself, he counts off with a mischievous glint in his eyes.
“One, two. . .”
“Just do it already!”
When he lets go, you see him mouth the number three. The water floods over your face and body, and you seal your eyes shut.
It’s quiet, here. You kick up some sand with your heel while trying to get your bearings straight, but the ocean swallows the noise. All you have is how the grainy the sand feels.
How did Goro feel on that sinking ship? Explosive? Confused? Destroyed?
Helpless?
Did you even know your brother well?
How can you even attempt to understand the pits of helplessness and wrath he drowned in when something like this—going for a swim—sets you off? How can you grieve for so long and know so little?
Someone’s calling your name, but the sounds are muffled by the water.
Ryuji plunges his hand in and brings you back. The ocean’s surface breaks with your head, and your resurfacing looks less “majestic mermaid with perfect hair” and more “air exists and it’s delicious.”
After a second he brings you close to him, wrapping you in a hug. You press against his collarbone.
“Ryuji, what’s wrong?”
“I just got worried, ‘s all.”
You pull back. “Well, I’m all right. You made sure of that when you pulled me out. See? Nothing bad would’ve happened.”
He avoids your gaze. “I tried calling your name.”
“I think I heard that. You might’ve had better luck if you called me Wendy. Seems like I can hear that from around the world.”
Wendy tells you what to say, how to smile, what to wear, what to think, and who to be. If you do everything she says, you can stand next to Robin Hood and Peter Pan and all the other fairytale characters who are bound to the pages of their own stories. Wendy makes you worthy.
She was always the press’ favorite.
“I ain’t gonna call you Wendy. ‘s not who you are.” He says your name under the moonless sky in such a way that it might break if the ocean got too close to it. “You ain’t Wendy.”
You aren’t Wendy.
You aren’t Wendy.
“I—I appreciate that. A lot.”
He looks at the beach. “You don’t gotta thank me. Let’s get back before the others come lookin’ for us.”
Both of you tread in silence. After a minute the water slides off you, but the sand sticks to your wet feet as you climb out of the ocean. You both wander over to his beach towel; its colors were blasted dry by the sun earlier.
When you sit down, you sit close to him and your shoulders bump. Beads of water trail your neck, your arms, and your legs. You glimpse him staring out at the ocean.
“It’s nice being out here,” you say. You reel back the words “with you” when you think about Akira.
“Yeah? Can’t say I’ve ever had a sunburn this big before.”
You roll your eyes and bring your knees to your chest, but the smile sailing over your lips slips out. “Which is because you didn’t bring sunscreen.”
“Pffft, there’s no way a stupid sunburn’s gonna get a leg up on me.”
Along the beach there are sandcastles, some in perfect condition, some folded in on themselves, and some that exist only as lumps of sand. A tiny red and white store-bought flag pokes out of a collapsing one. The tide rolls in and out and chips away at the ones along the shoreline.
“It’s kind of nice to be away from the world for a bit,” you say. “You know? Sequestered away from the reporters and everything.”
He puts his arms behind and lies on his back. “You’re telling me. Been hounding us ever since our identities were released. I mean, who does that! We were seventeen!”
“We were seventeen and arguably the most powerful force in Japan.”
“C’mon, we were kids. You should know how all that affected us better than anyone. You’re majoring in psych and all that stuff.”
“By affected you mean the stress it’d have on a developing teenage brain?”
“That! Someone should tell all those reporters to read up on that shit.”
Streams of conversation come from the restaurant. The rest of the Phantom Thieves tell jokes and bicker and bask in the restaurant’s lighting. Judging from that spilling sound, Morgana jumped on the bar.
“They’ve been hanging around my favorite places. It got bad a few weeks ago,” you say.
“Whadda they want?”
You shift. “An interview with Wendy.”
He makes a sound of disgust. “Tell ‘em to screw off. You don’t know a Wendy.”
Leaning against him right now would be nice. You’d fit next to him well, and he’d sling his arm over your shoulders. Under the moonless sky, you’d both be two halves of a complete moon.
But you do know a Wendy. If you were stronger, you could evict her right now with his help. She reminds you of the abilities you had and the times where it was you and the Phantom Thieves versus the world. She reminds you of Goro.
“I’ll keep that in mind.”
Waves continue to crash. Tiny sounds from the ecosystem of the beach wade between you both. He chews the inside of his cheek. When he breathes, it smothers the tiny sounds and the conversations from the restaurant.
“Y’know, I’ve been thinkin’,” he says.
“About?”
He sits up and rubs the back of his neck. “Everything we did, I guess. Changed a lot of stuff.”
You laugh. “It’d be kind of weird if nothing changed when we fought a god. Besides, I thought you’d enjoy the spotlight.”
“You kiddin’? I can’t even run in peace without someone on my ass.”
“Well.” A quick brush of your hands takes some of the sand off, and you get up and hold out your hand. “You can always try now. I’ll race you to fire up that competitive spirit!”
“For real?”
“Yeah.”
He clasps his hand in yours. “Yeah? Don’t cry when you lose.”
[IV]
Doctor Kaede slides a box of tissues to the corner of her desk and you pluck one to have something to hold onto. “What you’re feeling is valid. Have you discussed your grief with anyone else?”
“Only one person, Akira.”
“What about him made you open up?”
Kamoshida, Madarame, Kaneshiro, Futaba, Okumura, Sae, Shido. Hell, the collective social conscious of everyone wrapped up in the endless tracks of Mementos! How many times do you need to add Yaldabaoth to that list, too? Everyone talks about the humans the Phantom Thieves changed, but no one mentions the cosmic-defying entities you defied by daring to be your own people. Akira brought a rag-tag group of teenagers together to challenge the very fabric of the universe.
“I don’t know, really. I guess I thought if anyone could understand, it’d be him. He was the closest to Goro.”
She furrows her eyebrows. “Were you close to your brother?”
You fidget and rub the side of your neck. “We didn’t have that kind of relationship in the traditional sense. He had a hard time opening up, refused to, most of the time. I didn’t know anything about him other than that Shido was somehow involved, but there was something different when Akira showed up.”
“And how did you cope with Goro’s. . .actions?”
She might as well stamp the word “murderer” on his forehead. Is she wrong?
Of course! He was tossed aside by Shido and manipulated as a kid!
No, she isn’t. Goro did that of his own free will.
Come on, you of all people know the toll abuse and manipulation takes on a child.
I know. I know he was in unimaginable pain.
Then why are you sitting here and betraying him?
I’m not betraying him. These are the facts of the situation. I wanted to help him!
You can’t even imagine what he went through. Stop trying. You even admitted some guy got closer to your brother in one year than you did in your whole life.
We’re still family .
“I probably could’ve coped better.”
[V]
October.
Leblanc’s lights give you a headache.
“You gonna be okay, kid?” Sojiro asks as he unfastens his apron.
Hunched over with your forehead against a table, you groan. The bags under your eyes drag your face down, but hey, who needs concealer when no one can see your face?
“Wake me up when people obsess over something else.”
He walks over and pats your shoulder. “You can stay if you lockup. Remember to turn off everything when you leave this time.”
The door opens before you answer. Light, airy, almost, the bell rings. You lift your head, blinking, and turn toward the door. Who comes into a café five minutes before closing? His slim silhouette stands in the doorway while rain splatters on the pavement. Great, you know he’s the type to order something extravagant, expect it in two minutes, and stall closing.
Sojiro whistles and puts one of his hands on his hips. He smiles. “Finally decided to show your face around here, huh, kid?”
In one second he goes from being a stranger to someone who causes the ache in your heart; a curly black head of hair and glasses. Now, though, he’s taller, and the blazer he wears looks like it was plucked from a high-end fashion designer’s wardrobe.
“Akira,” you say. The table wobbles under your hands when you jut up. His very presence reinforces the chronic loneliness, the hollowness everyone tried to patch up with promises to get together, and the messages you and Ryuji and Makoto and Futaba—and everyone sent that were left on read or met with a single word response.
Shock registers on Sojiro’s face when you storm up to Akira, and in some place deep, deep, deep down in your head, a twinge of, what is it—shame or fear?—rears its head. But fuck it. If you looked away, Akira could pull one of his disappearing stunts.
“You asshole!” You jab a finger at him, grind your teeth, seethe, and do all the things that say I hate you, I hate you, I hate you .
Wide-eyed, Sojiro steps in to break you apart. “Hey, hey, hey—”
Akira holds out his hand. “It’s fine.”
“Two years, Akira! You could have called or texted or something, but you didn’t.” You ball your fists. “You vanished.”
Him being here means you need to answer a question: how much can you matter to someone who up and leaves?
“Both of you sit down and cool off,” Sojiro says. “I’ll make you a drink.”
Being a foot and a half away from Akira who now sits across from you makes your jaw tight. The pot in the back brews coffee.
Akira looks you in the eyes. “You’re right to be angry.”
You cross your arms over your chest.
“I needed to make sure no one would cause you any issues,” he says.
“We’ve been followed for the last two years by reporters, Akira. Anyone we know has been hounded, too. Sae’s gotten so much more shit outside the courtroom. We scrubbed Mementos, but there will always be bad intentions.”
Sojiro walks over with your drinks in hand, sets them down in front of you both, and gives you each a glance.
“Thank you,” Akira says. He picks up the mug and brings it to his lips.
“I’ll be in the back. Don’t burn anything down, kid.”
When Sojiro disappears into the back, Akira sets the mug down.
“I wasn’t talking about the press,” he says.
Oh.
“You should’ve told us. We could’ve worked together so you didn’t have to do it on your own.” You look down. “We needed you, too. I needed you, Akira.”
He places his hand on yours. “I know, and I’m sorry.”
Tears line the bottom of your eyes and spill over. “It’s hard when everyone asks about him, you know? And it’s been two years so I feel like I’m supposed to be over it, but I’m not . I keep feeling it again and again and again.” You place your other hand over his. “You have to know how it feels, Akira. No one else gets it. You have to know.”
He says your name, and if your sniffles were any louder, you would have missed it. “Let’s go for a walk.”
Yeah, you need this.
“Where?”
“Trust me.”
He offers you his arm when he gets up, and you cling to him with the skin on your arm and hand touching his blazer.
“Always.”
Quiet streets listen to your footsteps as you take the back alleys. When you're here with him, will the portals come back while you round the corners? Your grip on him tightens. Rain pelts the umbrella.
“You’re nervous,” he says.
“And whose fault is that?”
He smirks.
You pass the little red arcade nestled away from the world where you met Akira for the first time, the old bookstore with a joined café where you ran into him the second time, and a closed movie theater where he got your number the third time. Then, a park comes into view. The wet grass bends to your feet as you both walk to the bench with an overhang.
The wooden bench squeaks when you both sit down, and Akira folds up the umbrella, then leans it against the bench. Ducks waddle out from the pond hidden by bushes.
“I was starfished out on the grass here and screaming when you asked me to join the Phantom Thieves,” you say.
“Morgana thought you were in pain.”
“Oh, I was. I was cramming verb and adjective conjugations. That time feels close and far away at the same time, you know?”
Whenever he casts a glance at you, it’s distant. You could lean against his shoulder, intertwine your fingers, and have your skin on his, but the barrier between you holds. Your heart remains content in your chest instead of lurching in your throat.
He whispers your name. “You talked about Goro earlier.”
Wailed, more like it, but yeah.
“You’re grieving,” he says. “I think seeing a professional would help you.”
What? Your eyes open wide. Does he think you can’t handle it? Does he think you’re broken? Stop. You take a deep breath. You’re not broken. Seeking therapy doesn’t make you broken or fragile. It makes you strong.
“Why?”
“I’m concerned about you. I know an office. They helped me with my trauma.” He puts his hand on yours.
Trauma? Was it trauma? Okumura’s death. Goro’s insatiable craving for revenge. Your brother looking at you, red blood vessels popping in his eyes, like he’d kill you. He said he would. Sweeping away the terrifying sides of Goro let you file everything you don’t like away and lock them up.
When Akira touches you, why do you wish he was Ryuji?
Your nails leave imprints on your palms, little crescent moons. “Can you send me their phone number?”
“Sure.”
All of Akira’s attributes line up with what you want on paper: charismatic, intelligent, sociable. So, why, when he scoots closer to you, do you want him to be Ryuji? Why do you want Ryuji’s arm slung around you and for him to pull you close?
“Akira, what do I mean to you?”
You watch the ducks. He looks at you.
“Everything.”
“I’m sorry.”
He squeezes your hand. “I know.”
[VI]
You puncture holes in the tissue and avoid Doctor Kaede’s eyes.
“Before we end our first session, are you aware of the model the Five Stages of Grief?” She pulls out a piece of paper with the stages of them in one column—denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.
“Yes.”
“Are you practicing self-care strategies?” She runs her finger down the other column, and you hone in on one or two of the thirty or more strategies.
“Sometimes, but it’s hard to talk about when I don’t know how to put the words together.” You jam your hands together.
She nods. “Grief is especially difficult to navigate because we’re not taught how to cope and understand what we’re feeling. If you’re comfortable, talking about how you’re feeling with people you trust could also help. Sometimes we seek external understanding because we’re unsure of how we feel on the inside.”
Akira—you poured and projected on him. He became your only emotional outlet.
“Grief comes in stages and everyone processes it in different ways. No matter what, you’re not alone.”
“Thank you, Doctor Kaede.” You smile. “Can I make a follow-up appointment for next week?”
You’re not alone. You’re never alone.
[VII]
November 2nd.
You hole yourself up in your apartment, as per usual on the second of November. Glimmering stars peek through your closed curtains. All at once, numbness takes you and keeps you suspended from the rest of the world.
Rings from your phone don’t bring you down. Each minute passes on lethargic legs, and you don’t need anything or anyone to tell you it’s 12:34 a.m. As soon as it was 12:01, you knew. Packets of candy litter your nightstand. You sink into your bed.
Someone raps their knuckles against your door. You turn away from it.
Ryuji calls your name.
You slug one leg out from underneath the blankets, then the other leg. The cool doorknob sends a shiver up your spine.
“Hey,” Ryuji says. He takes a moment to catch his breath. “Sorry it took me so long to get here. I had to run.”
One blink, then two, then three. He’s here for you. He remembered, and your throat constricts.
“Hey. Thanks.”
“Wanna sit outside?”
“Yeah, I do.”
You step out, closing the door behind you. Autopilot takes over when you lead him to a sitting area with two foldable chairs next to each other. Instead of sitting, you wander over to the gray railing and peer down to the busy street. He stands next to you, and you let the silence talk between you two.
Akira is everything you want on paper, but Ryuji—Ryuji is real and here. You touch his hand and trace the veins.
“Thanks for remembering, Ryuji.”
He catches every flutter of your eyes, and when you lean into him, he laces your fingers together. His hands, steady and warm, ground you.
“‘course, I’d do anything for you.”
You ask him a medley of questions: Why are you putting so much effort in? Why do I feel this again and again and again? Why can’t I let go?
Please, will you stay?
But they all roll themselves together when you look into his eyes, hands still intertwined, and breathe his name: “Ryuji.”
His name is air for your lungs. His touch is the sun walking on your skin. His closeness is a catharsis you’d only ever caught in Neverland before.
He brushes the side of your face with his free hand and kisses your forehead under the half moon. “Anything for you.”
Together, in time, you both could make a full moon.
