I mean this the nicest way possible but have you considered the fact that you just .. hate RPF? Wich is fine, like you said it's a gray area. It's not everyone's cup of tea, actually! It's not even mine because I actually came across those trailers you said! And I instantly went "ew wtf" and I clicked not interested, and then I another showed up, and clicked not interested, and then the algorithm went ok got it, and it's been a while thankfully, that hasn't showed up. So, what I mean is, there is content in the internet that is weird, that's for sure, but there's like... Ways to avoid it? And the way that this has been a persistent subject in your blog in such a deep way makes me think that you suffer it more than anyone, wich is fine but just, don't look at it anymore? I don't know what to say honestly because, again no to be rude but youre making the MOST out of it. And it's like you're treating fandom culture like this deep dark secret when its as public as it can be and I promise you the most a person can do is feel weirded out and mute that content, and hope it doesn't show up.! But for example, I hate povs content, and that has to be the most persistent content I've seen so far on F1, full of "you're the wife/girl/sister" blah blah and I'm a lesbian, I've clicked not interested so many times I lost count and IT KEPT showing up (until i figured muting y/n, driver x reader helps) so if it keeps you more calm there are ways to avoid content you dont like!

I get where you’re going with this but also, nah. I’ve always loved RPF and will keep consuming it whenever I can. I just make a big stink out of seeing it outside of tumblr and ao3 because of algorithms and the way I was taught to interact with RPF about fifteen years ago in which….these things have to stay within their intended circles at all costs. This is back when fandom content was not cool and mainstream and unless you kept your fandom life and your actual life very separate you get bullied to hell for it. Now, I often feel like the pendulum has swung a little too far the other way and there’s such a massive influx of new people because fandom culture is trendy that fandom etiquette is starting to collapse. The treatment of RPF being one of them.

RPF differs from POV content in two ways. The first is that POV content is a little more accepted than RPF in the general consciousness, usually because it’s het but also because it’s very obvious this is a self insert fantasy which while I imagine is awkward for drivers to see, can be easily laughed off as being so obviously just a fantasy. RPF on the other hand builds off of pre-existing relationships and lore and is usually slash, which already introduces an awkward element (and you can say the men shouldn’t have toxic masculinity all you like, it’s not just them that’s the issue it’s everyone who perceives them and the content), also it’s more difficult because people DO talk about these pairings platonically. In order to not experience Lestappen on my tiktok FYP, I can’t interact with any video that mentions those two in the same breath ever because the algorithm will eventually push me ship content even if I don’t want to see it and I click not interested. This happens over and over again.

I love RPF which am just on super high alert about RPF safe spaces being breached because I know from lived experience that it doesn’t bode well. This is also just personally not the way I was taught to interact with fandom, and again I’ve seen enough shit in my time to understand why that etiquette had to be enforced.

TAG GAME: EIGHT SHOWS TO GET TO KNOW ME

Going in order of oldest to newest. And I'm only including shows that have a complete run, so there's that. (that's not a rule, I just did that for me)

MASH

I don't always love a sitcom, but watching MASH was a family activity. Growing up we had one TV, it was before the internet and home computers, so we watched what Dad chose usually (more on that later). MASH was a lot of things, but mostly it taught me about being yourself in a group, that it was okay to be whatever you were and that you could make a family anywhere.

The Rockford Files

Jim Rockford, being witty and sarcastic but also a loving son and good friend, driving fast and solving cases as an ex-con Korean War vet in 1970s LA. What's not to love about all that? Dad really had an iron grip on the TV guide back in those days and for a kid some of the plots didn't make sense, but I have rewatched the whole series multiple times and I'm here to tell you, a lot of it holds up. What does it say about me? I guess it says that I really like car chases and easily solved mysteries wrapped up in some wide lapels. But also I guess that James Garner as Rockford is a blueprint for the kind of hero I enjoy (flawed but ulitmately kind and very loyal).

Twin Peaks

This is becoming about my Dad here, but this is another show that we both loved. Turns out, my Dad likes the weird stuff, too. This is the last show that we watched together regularly before I moved out. Narratively who knows wtf happens in any David Lynch joint, but that's not really the point to me. I love the absurd, dark, haunting elements it makes me think about. Sometimes it's incomprehensible and that's okay. Just like life.

Justified

The show that teaches you that dialogue makes the character. Boyd Crowder will forever be one of my favorite characters solely because of his dialogue (and Walton Goggins's delivery). Every character on this show has a distinct way of speaking and behaving and it is really one of the most enjoyable shows ever just for that reason. I have never dug coal, but I feel like I have after spending time with these characters. I guess this one says that I like realism sometimes? Also, a flawed but ultimately kind and loyal hero (Raylan Givens, meet Jim Rockford).

Orphan Black

I could go on for days about what this show means, but others have already done that better than I could, so I'll just say this: we all contain multitudes. Also, Tatiana Maslany should have won every acting award ever during her time on this show. Another show that made me think about how being yourself is really complicated sometimes and we don't always figure it out alone (found family, etc, etc).

Parks and Rec

A workplace comedy? On my list? Yes, and it's this one. Always makes me laugh and I see a bit of how I act with coworkers in a lot of the characters (not Leslie usually, but Ron frequently).  Gently sending up living in the Midwest while not making fun of it, mostly. Lost count of how many times I've watched this one.

Ripper Street

A flawed yet ultimately kind and loyal hero, crime solving, my favorite era of history, some of the best dialogue on any TV show, interesting and twisty plots, one of my all-time favorite actors, incredible attention to detail, and a very satisfying ending not to mention one of the nicest, kindest, and welcoming fandoms. Did I mention found family and workplace comedy? That's there too. (Edmund Reid, Raylan Givens, and Jim Rockford walk into a bar...wait, I'm only one person, get in line boys) One of my desert island shows, my go-to in times of stress, the thing I always recommend to people looking for something good (so long as they can stomach blood, that is).

Holy fuck

Okay like first off I just want to acknowledge I don’t know what is considered a lot or a little when it comes to AO3 stuff like this but this is fuckin astounding to me. The fact that these numbers are this high for stuff that I’ve done. That I’ve written! I have a few disabilities that deal particularly with reading and stuff like that but I’ve loved reading and creating story ideas for YEARS now ever since I actually got into reading. (Thank you godzilla comics and homestuck for helping me by keeping my attention so my reading skills got better holy shit) Not to mention this is my first proper dive into interacting with a fandom that has a more so solid backing (I am a furry artist and am active in that fandom but it’s not really a fandom you can talk and interact with and have everything you say be understood.) and it’s been such an amazing experience so far!! Gods one of the wackyest things is that my first fanfic, my first writing? Was a weird ass modern au talk between Scanlan and Vax called ‘A song in the lonesome sea of emotion’ I wrote and posted that on 2023-02-13 it’s currently 2023-04-18 and at least according to a few of my friends and one or two other people my writings improved a lot, fuck even though I give myself a hard time even I’ll hand myself that! Whats even more crazy?? I have mutuals on here that are amazing writers! Like wtf y’all are amazing??? Even in the furry art side of my life I never really had that happen before! I am too scared to name names due to almost crippiling anxiety but to my first critical role mutual (which I think you know who you are?) thanks for in a way launching me further into doing better. To the mutual who continuedly reblogs my stuff with the nicest most sweetest of tags gods do I appreciate you, you have no idea how much that means to me! Normally I'd probably completely ignore this comment, but 1. this is the second time this week someone has said something like this to me, and 2. I am running on fumes due to a full week of insomnia and high pain, so fuck it, I'm answering.

You're wrong.

I'm sorry, but you're very wrong. There are as many reasons to delete as there are people, but there's an apparent belief among the people who delete for one specific reason - namely, because they want it gone forever - that everyone is like that.

They're not, and that people like you assume it causes more problems than it solves.

Actual reasons I know of that people have deleted:

1. they've left the fandom and they just don't want to be involved anymore, but don't care what people do with their work.

2. they've left all fandom, and don't want to risk an employer or family member or whoever finding their work, but they're proud of what they're created and they're more than happy to have some version of it shared after they leave, as long as it can't be tied to their identity.

3. the website they posted the work on changed their policies (looking at you, fucking LJ) and they just can't be fussed to re-post it to a different place.

4. having it up makes them sad, reminds them of a time when they were more able to write, brings back memories of friends who've left fandom, etc, but again, they don't mind if people read it, they just can't bear to see it any more.

5. they don't realize orphaning is an option (or they didn't post on AO3 in the first place) and think it's the only way to get the content not associated with them.

6. they're suffering depression or other mental issues, and they think everything they've ever done is absolute shit and should disappear from the world (a proxy for self-immolation, perhaps?) and then two weeks or two months or two years later when they feel better they regret it.

7. THEY didn't delete it - they're accounts were broken into or otherwise accessed by people who want to harm them, and THOSE people deleted.

8. they got a book deal to convert the work into original fiction, and distribution of the fanfic would be a violation of their contract terms, so they need it deleted and copies buried.

9. And, yes, some people delete because they want the work gone and they don't want anyone to have it for any of who-knows-what-other-reasons.

All of these, and any other reason people have, are valid! But if they don't tell us their preferences then we don't fucking know them, because no one can read your fucking mind and this bare assumption that "the only reason to delete is because they never want it seen again" is, using the nicest vocabulary I can manage right now, simplistic and reductionist.

Unlike you, I don't make that assumption - instead, I actually fucking investigate to try to find out because - again - not everyone is the same as you and not everyone does things for the same reason you would.

I make posts like the deathbanjo post, and others, because, unlike what your ill-thought-out two-second comment suggests about your actual interest and level of engagement in this topic (and hey, I don't know you any more than you know, if you're actually deep in this shit good for you and I'm glad to hear it but I'll own atm I'm extremely skeptical), I actually do give a shit what an author prefers and - when I'm able to get a hold of them at all - about as many say "do whatever you want" as say "please don't." And, if clearing houses of information like this side blog of mine (hi, my main is @unforth) don't exist, then no one fucking knows that the author even has a fucking preference, especially if they've eschewed social media and haven't made an announcement. Like, seriously, how do you see my post begging for information about their preferences and go from there to "secretively passing it around" when that's literally the exact fucking opposite of what I'm doing.

You know what happens if something like this post doesn't go around, and no word is heard from the author?

Everyone who has it shares the work, covertly, through whatever means they can. You know, like you're accusing me of doing by commenting on my (checks notes) extremely public post saying "I won't distribute if they say don't distribute" that has 700 notes.

Downloading works is an inherent function of AO3, and the instant an author chooses to post there, they lose the ability to control what happens to copies of their works. Honestly, asking preferences as I do is a fucking courtesy, and one that I personally think is really fucking important, which is why I do it, and why I insist that people who interact with me and who ask for resources from my archive respect those preferences. But if an author really never wants a PDF made they should never upload to AO3 in the first place, because the ability to convert any fanfic into an e-book is literally a single button click that cannot be disabled, and the vast majority of people in fandom don't make a fraction as much effort as I do to be respectful.

I know I'm being repetitive, and swearing too much, I'm sorry, I got less than 3 hours of sleep and I'm a fucking mess and, unlike you who get to make a pithy comment and then fuck right off and never think about it this again, I've been wrangling with the ethics of how to handle this for four fucking years and I'm also the one who fucking routinely has to tell people, "sorry, I won't make an exemption, even for you, because the author has said 'don't distribute.'"

The existence of my post, and my archive, is literally the opposite of what your fucking idiotic comment suggests. In a vacuum of information, common practice is that everyone shares whatever they have and they have virtually no recourse to find out the author's preference even if they care. I

I've created a single, well-known, ever-growing resource that conserves stories for a specific ship in a specific fandom, organizes them, stores them, maintains them, investigates deletions, publicizes issues, outreaches to authors, and then once I know I do my absolute fucking damnedest to both spread the news about their preferences and enforce their request. Also, if I find out (for example) that they've chosen to sell convert the work to original fiction, I help boost and spread the word that their original work exists, and if someone asks me for the fanfic, I say, "no I won't give it to you but here's the link to where you can buy the edited, original fic version1"

So, which of us do you think is doing more to help authors maintain autonomy of their works? To gain monetary remuneration for their efforts? To protect fic, promote writers, and support readers as well? Tell me, what the fuck do you think is the better alternative to "Hey I found out this is deleted, I'm gonna spend a month trying to find out more information, and if I hear even a whisper of don't distribute, I won't, so don't even ask" cause hey, I'm all ears. I'd love to hear more of your bullshit-stupid-ass opinions.

ok i got a couple of things to say about this part

first of all it makes me so sad that jes cares so much for someone who dosn't deserve him. because no hate to kaz but they would never work as a couple and kaz already treats him like shit most of the time

i think this part shows who a lot about who jesper really is. a boy that grew up having to hide parts of himself, who thinks he's worth nothing but it's smart and capable, who's loyal and brave and caring but doesn't even know it himself. he's someone who feels he doesn't deserve good things and thinks he's not good enough, and that's why he unds up in all the wrong places with the wrong people. he left uni bc he fell in with the gangs, because he didn't think he was smart enough or even prepared to be in studying in the university. jesper is constantly hiding behind a mask or running from things because he's scared of not being enough

an kaz is everything jes in a way wishes he could be. kaz is secure in himself (at least on the outside), he's stable, he's smart, he's "unshakeable". and most of all, he doesn't care about others (we know that's not true but that's how he presents himself)

and that's the thing that causes jesper all his problems. because he's insecure because he thinks he's not good enough for the poeple or things he cares about. and he's always trying to do what's best for his loved ones: he went to the ice court to pay his debt for his father, he follows kaz everywhere beacause he cares about him, he offered to read to wylan (knowing it wouldn't be easy for him to be still that long).

and yeah it often doesn't work out becuase he's messy and he has problems but he tries. and he hates that. he hates that he cares so much about people because at the end of the day, that's what makes him feel like he's not good enough

one more thing and i'm done i promise

unpopular opinion but i love that leigh made jesper have a crush on kaz. 1 beacuse it's refreshing to see someone not get otgether with his first crush. and 2 because i love that it shows that we sometimes get attached to people that are not good for us, but that we can learn to move on. jesper ended with wylan who respects him and values him, unlike kaz

Oh boy tough questions and hard answers. I write mainly about a rare pair that isn't everyone's cup of tea so I can't really answer this. Like any creator on here any attention is fuel for the soul and since I thrive on positive reinforcement most likely to my own detriment any sort of recognition is kerosene to the sputtering flame of my muse.

7. Have you written any crossovers?

Nope... though I have thought about it just my muse is a fickle thing.

8. What is the craziest fic you’ve written?

Hmm... this one would involve a certain brother and a small purchase of land that lead to getting a title and flaunting said title to his own detriment. Virgil would still like to dump his fishy ass in the middle of the ocean for that one.

My ass is too lazy to find the link for this one and its lost in the depths of my archives... titled... Laird Fish or something like that.

9. What’s the fic you’ve written with the saddest ending?

I like to leave stuff on happy endings when I complete them.. though I know I have written a few chapters with not so nice endings...

No clue.. I leave that to my readers to decide.

Teee he he... smuttiest.. I forever strive to out smut myself with every new thing I've written...and smuttiness is like art.. it varies for everyone so its in the eye of the beholder.

As of yet, no. Somehow I've managed to dodge this so far... knock on wood.

The first think I’ll admit to writing (and the first thing I actually completed) was a Loki platonic oneshot because I was lonely and want them to be my best friend and spouse. It was actually kind of cute.

10.  Is there a fandom you read fic from but don’t write in?

Well I’ve been down a 1d rabbit hole ever since the beginning of the year, but my fanfiction journey actually began when I started reading Skam OG fics. And I’ve also read quite a lot of BBC Merlin and Potterverse fics, and still expect to in the future, but I don’t think I would ever write for these fandoms.

19. Is there a ship which you wished you could get behind, but you just don’t feel them?

Like you said, probably Ziall, because for me it’s Ziam or nothing haha But I recently read Through Eerie Chaos and I have to say the Ziall relationship was really cute!! So I don’t know... And obviously I’d have a hard time reading a fic where Louis or Harry ends up with someone else. Narry especially, like wtf they’re literal brothers???

28. If someone were to draw a piece of fanart for your story, which story would it be and what would the picture be of?

Funny you should ask that because I’m actually looking for volunteers 😝 My current wip features letters between H&L, and H is really into art and occasionally sends L his waterpaintings. It would be some kind of Erodan lanscape of a beach or a lighthouse. If anyone sees this and is interested, hit me up!!

Omg I don’t know I’m just so grateful to anyone who’s ever taken the time to leave me feedback! I think one of the coolest thing for me is when people tell me they related to the characters, because characterization is so important to me and also it’s just incredible to think that some readers might feel seen or represented thanks to something I wrote.

48. Do you leave reviews when you read fanfiction? Why/Why not?

I didn’t use to because I was shy but now that I’ve started writing I try to leave comments as much as I can, especially if I enjoy the fic. I know how good it feels to receive a comment and how encouraging and game-changing it can be when you feel unmotivated to write, or when you feel like your writing is bad.

I am a recent follower and I just wanted to say: I have no clue who these characters are. I have no clue of their canon, if they are OCs, or from a show, or whatever. What I do know, is that you obviously love them, and it shows in your art. It shows how much love and attention you give it. Keep doing what you do. Either way, you will have one more clueless, art loving anon.

anon is probably(?) referring to alien boy and mage boy, which is my tag for two characters from a fandom i really like drawing kink art for…theyre my favorites and outside of this blog. big big comfort characters.

for the record theyre the funniest ship to make content for. here’s an analogy:

imagine a tv show about a really cringy concept that has a small fandom. this tv show has a million episodes and you can’t bring yourself to watch all of them. there’s maybe five full episodes with these two characters in them, and their role isnt really relevant to the plot. its like the show had a vague idea of what it’s doing but no one actually is communicating so these two characters only kind of connect to it. after these episodes premiere the pair basically never appear again. they arent killed off, they just kind of stop existing? the people from the show’s company who helped create these characters leave the company, so they’re left in the void for the fans to pick back up. not to mention the company itself is pretty shit, so you kind of hate the producers but like the show, even if its a really cringy concept.

anyways! hope that gives a good explanation to the majority of the followers on here who see me draw like Two Specific Characters From A Minuscule Fandom……………
