— NETEYAM
Despite Spider being like another brother to him, there was not a close bond between you and him.
It wasn't entirely his fault because you rarely left devils gate, making it difficult for him to know you well. Your inability to breathe shouldn't be an excuse since Spider can handle it, and it's expected that you can too.
However, he did understand the situation. He recognized that it might be scary for you to be constantly surrounded by things bigger than you, and that it could be overwhelming.
As a response to this understanding, the main group came to an agreement to spend more time at the lab with you. They made efforts to convince you to engage in activities outside, aiming to foster a stronger connection.
Although he couldn't accompany them every time due to his training schedule, whenever he did join them, he displayed an overly cautious attitude similar to his mother's.
He finds it difficult to have meaningful conversations with you, often exchanging only short and curt words. This has made him think that you might not like him, and he may feel the same way.
One day, Spider, Kiri, Lo'ak, Neteyam, and Tuk manage to convince you to leave the lab. It turns out to be an amazing experience for you, far more beautiful than looking through a window.
Your whole personality changes from being closed off to being more open. You start smiling, talking, and showing genuine interest in everything around you, including Neteyam.
Neteyam is surprised and speechless. He thinks your smile is beautiful compared to your usual frown when he's around.
Your smile drew him in, making him wonder how he can spend more time with you so he can see it more. As you chat and ask random questions while walking together, you show an effort to get to know him better.
Since that day, Neteyam makes an effort to join the group more often. He comes up with excuses, like being the oldest and needing to watch over them as his father always advised. Surprisingly, his excuses work every time.
He notices that you're smiling more when he's around, even though it may not be because of him specifically. Nonetheless, seeing you happy brings him a sense of joy.
One night, after a late visit to see you, he lies in bed, trying to sleep. However, thoughts of you keep drifting into his mind. He realizes that he feels genuinely glad to have met you, maybe even too glad. It dawns on him that he has been looking forward to seeing you a lot lately.
At first, he believes it's because he has finally gotten to know you better, considering you like a sister. However, that thought doesn't sit well with him. The realization doesn't help either; if anything, it makes things worse.
He understands his own feelings and how you make him feel. It annoys him that he has only just realized it instead of remaining oblivious.
He has returned to being quiet, lost in his thoughts, and more serious. Consequently, he doesn't visit the lab as frequently anymore. He needed to redirect his focus towards something else, such as training for his future, a future where he wouldn't have you by his side.
Despite the pain of being away from you and the frustration of not being able to express his feelings, he made the difficult decision to distance himself. He believed that a romantic relationship between the two of you wouldn't work out, as it wasn't realistic and couldn't become his reality.
It bothers him when his siblings return and talk about their day, casually mentioning things you did. He despises how his ears instinctively perk up in interest and how your name immediately captures his attention.
He yearns to be a part of those stories, right by your side like his siblings. If he could have that, it would be enough for him. However, he acknowledges that his feelings for you are more than just wishful thinking. He understands that such thoughts are best kept within the realm of his dreams.
He is intelligent and considerate enough to recognize that staying away from you is the best decision for both of you. He can't have you, and you can't have him.
— AO’NUNG
He absolutely despised your presence. In his eyes, you were nothing but a freak of nature. Forget about Kiri and Lo'ak, as you had become the primary target of his attention and annoyance.
Seriously, how messed up were the Sully's in their heads to actually believe it was a brilliant idea to pick you up and bring a demon along? It just didn't make any sense to him, and he couldn't help but question their sanity.
He couldn't bring himself to look at you directly, and whenever you were in his line of sight, his eyes would narrow in disdain. Controlling his words became a futile task, as he couldn't help but let out the most hurtful and insulting remarks, surpassing even those directed at Lo'ak and Kiri
He completely ignores your existence, treating you as if you were insignificant. He constantly makes jokes about how you would be the first to perish in any situation due to your small stature and inability to breathe the same air as him.
About 8 out of 10 times, he took pleasure in making you cry, showing no remorse whatsoever. He considered you to be overly sensitive and weak, seeing your tears as a sign of vulnerability. He believed that if it weren't for the Sully family's presence and support, you would be nothing more than potential prey for a thanator or some other menacing creature.
Eywa forbid something actually happens to you, though. It would earn him no satisfaction if one of the things he teased you about actually came true. In fact, it would break him inside if such a situation unfolded right in front of him.
His perception of you took a drastic turn when, during a group swim in the ocean, you were unexpectedly pulled under by a strong current. In the chaos, your mask cracked, leaving you in a dangerous situation. It was in that intense situation that Ao'nung, who happened to be the closest and fastest swimmer in the group, came to your rescue.
Everyone is panicking, huddled around you as Ao'nung brings you to land. But nobody is more shocked than him. He's at a loss for words, his eyes wide and fixed on you as you struggle to catch your breath, your lips turning blue.
You were on the verge of dying, and then Neteyam stepped in. Without hesitation, he covered both your mouth and nose with his own, giving you the oxygen you desperately needed until a new mask could be provided.
Ao'nung knew that wasn't a kiss. He understood it was a life-saving act. Deep down, he's relieved to see you back to your quirky human self, but he didn't like that situation at all.
Now, he's more conscious of you and your surroundings after that incident. It affected everyone, but he felt it more than others. Additionally, he's keeping an eye on Neteyam and how he interacts with you. Ao'nung is starting to notice the closeness between you two.
Why did he even care?
So what if you didn't enjoy interacting with him as much as you did with Neteyam and Lo'ak, sometimes Rotxo. He understood that it was because he often teased you. And even though you rarely smiled at him unless others were around, he still cherished those rare moments.
But there was one thing that truly bothered him and kept him awake at night: your physical closeness with other males. Every time he saw you with the duo you grew up with, you were excessively touchy and intimate, which didn't sit well with him.
It wasn't fair. The only times he could touch you were when you first arrived and when he saved your life. Other than that, the guys didn't allow it, which really brought him down.
Nevertheless, he continued to tease you. Yet, he made an effort to find moments alone with you. During those times, his teasing wasn't about you being a human/demon in a Na'vi world. It was more about getting you flustered or understanding your relationships with others, without showing any signs of jealousy.
Things didn't go as planned, and his attempt to understand your feelings ended up causing a fight between you both. As a result, you both started keeping your distance from each other. It hurts him because he's not clueless. He knows what this means. He has fallen for a human, out of all the people in the village.
The space between you gives him time to accept the hard truth that he will carry his feelings silently and never act on them. He has to find peace in watching you live a happy life without him by your side because he knows he can't be with you the way he wants. It wrong and impossible. Why did it have to be you?
— LO’AK
He's probably the least angsty out of the three when it comes to you. I mean, it's Lo'ak we're talking about here — how could you be any different from Spider? You practically grew up together, like family, just from different species.
But let me tell you, once puberty hit, things changed. He always thought you were the cutest human he had ever seen, and that's saying something because Spider doesn't even come close. But during puberty, whoa, he thanks Eywa for that blessing.
Whenever he mustered the courage to speak to you, his words stumbled, his voice grew quieter, and maintaining eye contact became a challenge. Spider, Neteyam, Kiri—everyone noticed it, everyone but you.
Was it really a surprise that he ended up developing feelings for you? Not really. You showed him kindness, respect, and genuine interest. You saw him for who he truly was, listened to him, and shared moments that mattered. It was only a matter of time before his heart couldn't help but fall for you.
He's fully aware of the potential drawbacks that could arise if he were to pursue a relationship with you. He understands that the downsides outweigh the benefits, and he doesn't take it lightly. However, deep down, he wishes he could muster up more concern for the potential consequences.
Lo'ak quickly brushed aside the notion that it could never work out between you two because his feelings for you had a strong grip on his judgment. He wanted it to succeed, needing it more than anything else. Rarely had he desired something with such intensity, even though it seemed to be his nature to yearn for things that were out of reach.
He's torn between the desire to express his feelings for you openly, to lay bare his affection and the way you brighten his world in ways he never imagined.
Yet, he refrains from doing so. Fear holds him back, afraid of how you might react. He remains uncertain about your own sentiments towards him, uncertain if you feel anything for him at all.
Instead of expressing his feelings, he remains silently by your side, watching as his emotions intensify and his jealousy towards Spider grows stronger. The thought of you choosing Spider as your companion fills him with mixed emotions. On one hand, it would relieve him from the potential complications and drawbacks of pursuing a relationship with you. On the other hand, it would shatter his heart to witness you with someone else.
However, deep down, he cares immensely. If you were to choose Spider, he would have to conceal the pain that grips his heart each time he sees you together. He would have to find a way to move on, despite his heart belonging solely to you, even if he were to end up with someone else.
Why did he feel like such an outcast? Why couldn't he fit into a neat category that would make it easier for you to love him without hesitation? Why did it matter so much what others thought? Love should be blind to such superficial boundaries, shouldn't it?
The incident when you and Spider were captured by Quaritch and others only reinforced the notion that society held different standards. Only one of you managed to survive, and he couldn't help but wish he had been more courageous in expressing his feelings. He wanted to ignore everyone's expectations, disregarding their opinions—just this once, just for you—so he could hold you in his arms as lovers do, experiencing that cherished connection for the first and possibly last time.

chapter one (you're here)
A soft humming of a song unfamiliar to anyone could be heard around the computers. When Jake peeked out he noticed your presence. He had met a couple of other people in the place, but they didn't seem to hold him in high regard as unlike his brother. While he was thankful he wasn't being wheeled around in the chair to meet every scientist or military person who worked at Hell's Gate.
As he looked in your direction he noticed that you had a couple of things on your desk, unlike other adults, you looked younger, quite a bit. But another feature that set you apart from them was that you had at least three different screens on your desk, almost as if it was a control room just for you. Each one reflected different images or text. On the farthest one, he could tell you had the map of Pandora in full in company with a couple of pieces of information that he assumed as basic as he could as additional information.
“Ah, there you are. Grace informed me you were coming, Jarhead” you addressed him, without even looking at his direction. “What? Too many confusing terms for you?” you laughed a little, turning around in your chair and finally facing him.
“Jarhead? They only called me like that in the military” he laughed a little, stretching out his hand towards you. You nodded, shaking his hand for less than a second, only to go back to checking a couple of things on the screens.
“I call all the idiots like you around here that. I should call them by other names, but well” you muttered the last under your breath and he couldn't help but nod uncomprehendingly, but still, the confused smile on his face didn't leave him.
“Are you talking about the military?”
“I have worse nicknames for scientists” you assured with a forced smile, getting up from your chair and closing a couple of open tabs that were on just one of your computer screens. Soon, you guided your non-dominant arm to the vicinity of your lips.
“May 19, 2154 with lunar time of 10:17 AM, I report the presence of Jake Sully at my desk and the data I am to show him in the company of Norm Spellman before both of them officially become part of the Avatar project. Don't forget to corroborate data in…” you stopped talking and thought for a bit. “Ten hours and forty-three minutes in the company of Colonel Miles Quaritch and Head Administrator Parker Selfridge.” A small beam-which Jake could soon tell was a scanner-scanned first you and then him. He was a little surprised and smiled, cocking his head to one side.
“Do they give those to everyone?” As you walked, he followed as best he could with his chair. He seemed genuinely interested in the machine. You laugh a little and then spoke.
“No.”
You had just finished eating one of the rations that, you felt, you had just stashed away a few hours ago and you looked around, tired and with a headache that was slowly dissipating.
Honestly, you felt a little -a lot- of worry growing in your chest. From the state of the place, it had been at least more than ten years. You prayed somehow that everyone was alive, they should be. Besides that, nothing in those ruins could confirm anything about the date, the computers weren't completely broken, but they did have a couple of plants starting to grow around them. Which seemed strange to you, since there was no way for them to get in without having to wear an exo-pack. Though you were very lucky that by strange things -or by Eywa's will, according to the local natives' words- that animal had allowed you to leave.
Your watch was totally off, but at least in its place, right where you left it before Grace put you to sleep. Wow, with the time that had passed surely she had already found out about the little white lies you had delivered to the military base. Bah! for the time that had passed even your own planet must have been sure of that.
“But I guess you're happy…” you smiled teasingly, looking out the large window to where nature was peeking through. It stretched outside the glass, you also saw some small insects flying around.
After a long time of admiring your surroundings, you sighed. Which option should you take? Because the most emotional one would be to go back to Hell's Gate, but unsure about the time you've missed, you doubted if it was a reliable source right now. And even if it wasn't, it's been a good while where your information wasn't covered up by yourself, so anyone must know about you and your true identity.
“Agh… how stupid of me…” you complained, throwing your head back. “I still don't want to work besides…” you thought, turning to look at a tablet that didn't have any creepers on it. The only reason for taking a cryosleep was laziness to work during the time that Jake Sully had now decided to help the Na'vis, as you were still pretending to be part of the military's team for those times.
“I wish I'd had that idiot's problems… wanting to walk, ending up falling in love with an alien and betraying the race” you complained again, wearily, lying on the floor and staring at the ceiling. “I did the last one, though.”
Everything was still spinning around in your head. Yesterday you had hugged Grace for the last time, said goodbye to Trudy, punched Norm in the ribs, and misplaced Jake's chair. Today, you were in complete solitude in that place.
Without a destination. Not knowing what the fuck to do. Ever since you'd arrived on that moon you'd been determined to always be one step ahead of anyone, even your friends, but there was no way you could do that now, not with who knows how much time wasted. Soon, your spotlight came on and much to your dismay, you sat up, running a hand over your face.
“Nothing is impossible for me” you repeated the mantra you used to give your coworkers when you were in front of the computers, walking over to the machines. Yes, most were broken, some not so much, but they were still unusable. You pulled out the tablet of it's place, feeling your eyes light up when it turned on. Soon your face looked annoyed again, as it had no date or time.
“Is there any fucking way to know what date I'm on?” you gave the wall behind you a little kick, checking the data that was available. You seriously wondered if waking up bewildered was something all those idiots expected. Sure, the girl who thought she was the big deal for outwitting the military by waking up not knowing where, or how, or when she was.
“You'll see, Grace… I'm going to cut all your fucking braids out of your avatar when I find you” you growled, checking a couple of things. While it wasn't something as advanced as your computer or your watch, it was something you could work with for now, especially if you wanted to get out of there.
Before long, you managed to get few of the technologies in the place up and running. You had to take a bit of a breath for that, as it meant that if Hell's Gate had been taken over by the military, they could track you.
“Okay, and now the only thing I could put in any of this junk” a simple double-location. It gave exactly the same spot on the other side of the planet. A little trick you had managed to install before you went to sleep, just in case. Yes, you couldn't get ahead by a few years, but you could give yourself a boost from the past with basic things.
“Now, if I have everything correct… and if Max is still alive…” you ran your fingers over the touchpad, hoping to see at least just a single red dot on the whole big vast map.
“What's this for?” asked Max, looking at the watch you had just left on his desk.
“To combine, obviously” you smiled, as you walked out of the labs.
Yes, it hadn't been just for that. Being the most loyal, you knew perfectly well that just by knowing Max's location, you'd have a little bit of information. And what kind of person wouldn't you be if you hadn't put a tiny little tracker on him?
You smiled at the idea and soon, a couple of hours away, as reflected by the tablet, there was a blinking dot. In a recognized location.
"Yes!"
You couldn't help but take a deep breath after the happy second, hoping that the military hadn't stolen that stupid watch.
“How angry I'd be if that asshole gave it away.”
...
“Hey… guys” the female voice of one of the few humans left on Pandora caused both the Olo'eyktan of the Omaticaya, Jake Sully and his friend, Norm Spellman to turn from the maps they were reviewing to where that woman was directing them. They followed her finger to the screen.
“What's going on?” questioned Jake, adjusting his eyes to check what she was pointing at. There were two new blinking dots on the map.
"It just activated. There's another one at the same point on the other side of the moon. Do you think they're military?” observed Norm, scratching his chin a little anxiously. That would be a big problem.
"No, no. This point is next to the cloud forests, remember? If there were military they'd be dead by now or we'd have gotten the word from the nearby clans. On the other side, it's the barren areas, but there's nothing there” Jake pointed first to the first spot that activated and then moved the map, pursing his lips. The first little light was around the intimidating forest and the oldest trees in all of Pandora bred, the other was in a dead space.
"M-maybe it's just a coincidence" the only woman there smiled, trying to avoid a tense atmosphere.
But nothing in Pandora is a coincidence. And Jake knew it.
"I'll send some warriors over there. There must be something in that place”.

mom?
Spider x Neytiri (mother-son) a mother's day special
synopsis: after the Sullys return to the forest, Spider has constantly been struggling with the thoughts of Neytiri not hesitating to kill him in exchange for Kiri; serving as a reminder of just how replaceable he is. When mother's day comes up and the Sully kids all shower Neytiri in love, Spider is once again reminded that he'll never have a mom to care for him like he's always wanted.
extra info: Neteyam never got shot during the battle of awa'atlu and Spider didn't save Quaritch so the dialogue and plot in this is a bit different than atwow.
author's note: I just wanted to write this little fic for mother's day when it came in mind. Spider has basically been an orphan his whole life and although he hangs out with the sully kids, he's not officially part of the family, or of anyone's family. So I thought it'd be nice to write something good for him.
warnings: fluff but a little angst at first, some violence, small mentions of death/killing(no one dies), some mentions of self hate, angst to comfort
word count: ~ 3.5k -3.7k
┆彡
"Release, or I cut" Neytiri threatened.
"What, you think I care about some kid? He's not mine. We're not even the same species." let out Quaritch, not wavering for his own biological son.
"Just plea- please don't hurt her. Just please, Let her go, PLEASE." managed Spider as Neytiri held a knife to his chest.
"Don't kill him." whispered Kiri.
"Listen to me, let her go. Don't hurt her" pleaded Spider.
"Mom, don't kill him." Quaritch's knife dug deeper into Kiri's skin.
"A child, for a child." Neytiri's grip on Spider tightened.
"Please, don't hurt her." he pleaded once more.
SLICE
"I cut." hissed out Neytiri as she cut through Spider's flesh.
"Spider! SPIDER!" Spider was ripped out of his thoughts as Kiri's voice waved through his ears.
"Sorry, I was thinking."
"Isn't it me who's usually supposed to be spaced out, lost in thoughts?" teased Kiri
"yea," He gave out a light chuckle.
"Are you fine, you've been acting strange ever since mom did you know what..." Kiri gave a questioning look.
"No, no it's fine. I'm fine. She was just trying to save you, she was mad at Quaritch so she acted out. It's understandable." reassured Spider, though inside, he felt unwanted by Neytiri and a burden to the Sullys.
He knew Neytiri didn't accept him as he wasn't a Na'vi and to make things worse, he's the son of Quaritch, leader of the group of sky people who tried to destroy Pandora, kill her family, and wipe out her people. How could Neytiri ever care for Spider as one of her own?
"Spider, it's okay to feel upset. I know I would." Kiri saw right through him, she wasn't stupid.
"Come, it's Mother's Day. The sky people usually gift their mothers gifts on this day to show their appreciation for her. You, out of all of us should know that," tugged Kiri as she tried to cheer up his spirits by involving him in family activities.
"Actually, I don't think Neytiri would want to have me around. If I gift her some flowers or food, she might throw them out, feed them to her ikran, or say a palulukan ran over them. Even worse, they might stink of alien blood." He lowered his head in shame as he played with his songcord.
"Spider! How could you say such a thing about yourself! She wouldn't do that! You are part of the family, she cares about you like she does about me!" exclaimed Kiri.
"That's the problem; I'm not part of the family. I don't have a mom or dad-"
"Neither do I, but Neytiri has become my mother. I love her just as much as I love Grace, and she does too." Kiri squatted down to Spider's height, and she placed her hand on his shoulder, trying to comfort him.
"You are Na'vi, I'm not. That's why she's accepted you as her own! She doesn't like me because I'm human." he barely let out in a whisper.
"No! Norm and Max are not hated by Neytiri, she even cared about Grace and Trudy as well. Don't you remember the stories of the clan, they even painted Trudy in Omaticaya war paint for battle! She doesn't hate humans!"
"But I'm not them! Were they related to Quaritch? NO. They weren't a burden, they could care for themselves, and they were Jake's friends. Jake and them chose their friendship, but me, I'm just one big accident. I should have never been born. Why did the scientists save me anyways, to burden everyone, and so I could never have a place to call home? Is that why?!" he threw his songcord on the floor in anger as he stood up. "She would never let me call her mom, and I wouldn't blame her." He stormed away, somewhere into the vast forest as to be left alone.
Kiri just stared as her mouth hung open in shock, not knowing how to react. She ran after him, trying to catch up, not knowing what she was going to say next.
When the coast was clear, Neytiri moved from behind the tree and approached the spot Kiri and Spider were previously at. A sigh left her lips as she picked up Spider’s disregarded songcord and held it close to her.
“Oh great mother, forgive me,” an almost silent prayer as she closed her eyes in realization of everything she just heard.
~~~~~
“Mom, mom! Happy Mother’s Day! I got this for you!” Tuktirey held up an assortment of tiny flowers she had picked for Neytiri.
“Oh, thank you, Tuk! I love them, they smell wonderful.” Neytiri smiled as she lifted them to her nose and breathed in their scent. She opened her arms, gaining a hug from Tuktirey, then patted her head and gave her a small forehead kiss.
“These will go with my bow.” she walked into her tent and was met with a surprise, Lo’ak, Netetam, Kiri and Jake all standing together. Kiri held a bouquet of even bigger flowers and Jake held a necklace matching two arm bands that Lo’ak and Neteyam each held, all containing a similarly woven pattern.
"Happy Mother's Day!" they all let out in unison.
"Oh my!" Neytiri beamed as her children and husband all gathered together to shower her in love and affection.
"These are for you." Kiri handed her the bouquet she picked out.
"And these as well." Jake presented as Lo'ak and Neteyam each handed her an armband.
"These are so beautiful! Oh, thank you-"
"Try them on mom!" squealed the youngest, excited to see the pretty accessories on her mother.
"Tuk, calm down." Jake warned but Neytiri just laughed at her excitement. She slid them on and turned her arms to look at them.
"So, how do they look?" She questioned.
"Beautiful!" exclaimed Tuktirey as she clapped her hands in excitement.
"I love them, thank you guys so much." Neytiri placed a small peck on everyone's forehead, including Jake's.
"Wait, we're not done yet." Jake opened the flap to their marui and they all walked out. He walked behind their shared tent and came back around with an ikran saddle in his hands.
"What is this?" Neytiri side eyed Jake, curious at the new object in his hands.
"It's an ikran saddle for you mom, your old one is all worn out, so we made you a new one." explained Lo'ak.
"For me?" she raised an eyebrow.
"Yes, for you!" Giggled Tuktirey as she now sat on Neteyam's shoulders to get a good view.
"I- I don't know what to say. These are beautiful. And they match my arm bands as well!"
"You don't have to say anything, happy mother's day! Thank you for being the most wonderful mother to our children." Jake placed a small kiss on her lips.
The sully's all gathered around Neytiri and embraced her in a warm hug, everyone was happy except for one watching, Spider.
He was hidden behind another clan member's tent and had seen how Neytiri had cherished all of her children. Once again realizing, that he didn't have a family and never will.
A small sigh left Spider's lips as he dropped the flowers he had picked for Neytiri and turned around, leaving for a quiet spot to ponder on his thoughts. Unbeknownst to him, Neytiri had spotted the flowers drop and him walking away. Her heart ached at the sight as she wished to call him, but shame and guilt got in the way.
"What is it? Is something wrong?" Jake saw the look on her face.
"No, nothing! Everything is fine. Thank you, my loves, I really appreciate your wonderful gifts. May Eywa bless you all" she forced a smile and gave each another small kiss and went on to saddle her ikran.
~~~~~
It was midday, and Spider had been sulking. He had faked his energy around the Sullys the whole day. His earlier talk with Kiri put him in a bad mood, and everything he witnessed further deepened the pang in his heart. Spider was filled with sadness, jealousy, and confusion, not knowing who, what, or where he was supposed to belong.
"Hey Spider, where's your songcord?" once again broken out of his thoughts but by Lo'ak this time.
"Oh um... I guess I lost it." Spider shrugged, not having much interest in it anymore since he didn't consider himself as one of the people.
"What do you mean you lost it, that has all of your life stories in it! What are you gonna do?" Lo'ak questioned, shocked at Spider's lack of care for his songcord.
"I don't know, man. I guess I'll go looking for it later on." he suggested in a dull voice.
"It'll be eclipse by the time you start searching." Lo'ak pointed to the sky.
"Meh, what's the biggie?" he sighed
"WHAT'S THE BIGGIE? What if you get eaten by a palulukan, or get attacked by some hungry nantangs (viperwolfs)? You'll be a GONER!" Lo'ak waved his arms in exclamation.
"Then I'll be doing everyone a favor." Spider muttered under his breath, not high enough for Lo'ak to hear.
"What?"
"Nothing, I'll be fine. Go have food with your mom, she probably made lunch by now." Spider got up and patted Lo'ak's shoulders in reassurance.
"Bro, aren't you at least gonna eat?"
"I'll be fine." he waived as he walked away to another section of the clan. Spider didn't have in mind to go looking for his songcord, but he knew it gave him a good excuse to wander off by himself. Not like any of the Omaticaya would care about his well-being, or so he thought.
Before he could make it too far from home tree, the sound of Neytiri's voice made him stop. "Spider!" He turned around.
Huh? Shit, I must have done something wrong to make Neytiri upset. Did I bump into Tuk by mistake, did I break one of her toys? What if I accidentally stepped on the bow Neytiri's father gave her?
His thoughts ran wild as he thought of all the possibilities of why Neytiri could possibly be upset with him.
"Spider!"
"Y- yes, on my way!" he huffed out and approached the tent, flap open as all the Sullys had just gone inside to eat. "You called?" he cautioned in nervously, getting ready for an earful.
"Eat, where are you going without your lunch? You will become weak and unable to catch up with the others if you keep this up. And you will become the next meal for a nantang if you plan to go into the forest like that.” Spoke Neytiri as she handed off some bowls of food.
"I, I'm sorry. I'll eat right away." he let out, not knowing what else to say, shocked as Neytiri had called him to eat, and not to scold him.
He sat down and ate, finishing his food as quickly as he could. “Thank you.” He let out and Neytiri simply nodded.
“Lo’ak, go clean the bowls by the river and take your brother with you. Neteyam, please collect some water, our vases are running dry and we’ll need some for later and for tomorrow morning.”
“Ooh can I go? Can I, can I, can I? Pleaseeee.” begged Tuk.
“Lo’ak, keep an eye on your sister.” Neytiri stacked the bowls and handed them to Lo’ak.
“But mom, she’s just a distraction!” pleaded Lo’ak.
“Silence! You will bring your sister with you. She needs to learn how to chores as well.”
“Ughh” Lo’ak let out a groan as he rolled his eyes and made his way out of the marui with Neteyam trailing behind him and Tuktirey already skipping her way along the path.
“Well, it’s time for my lessons with Mo’at. I’ll get going.” Kiri thanked Neytiri for the food and also left the tent, leaving just Jake, Neytiri and Spider inside.
“Don’t you have some business to attend to?” Neytiri questioned.
“Who, me?” Jake pointed to himself
“Well, who else has the duty of being Olo’eyktan? Some of the clan members were having a quarrel about something. You better go check.” Neytiri waved off Jake as he left the tent with a sigh, wishing he had more time to relax after his meal.
Spider stood there awkwardly, not knowing what to do.“I better get going.” He let out and was about to leave the tent until he was stopped by Neytiri.
“What is this I hear about you losing your songcord?” She questioned, not lifting her head as she cleaned up the marui.
“Err, I must have dropped it earlier today, but I think I have a good idea of where it’s at.” Spider scratched his head as he came up with what sorta felt like a lie. He remembered throwing his songcord to the floor in frustration as he spoke to Kiri earlier today.
“I suppose you are going into the forest to find it?” Neytiri looked at him.
“Yes, I guess so.” He motioned to turn around, but was once again stopped by the voice of Neytiri.
“Nonsense, it will be late by the time you reach deep enough into the forest to find your songcord. It would be dangerous for you to go alone. Get your bow and we will go find it.” Neytiri motioned with her hands for him to leave the tent and he did just that.
Spider was confused as to why Neytiri was helping him. This was the first time in his life that she ever offered her assistance to him, besides just sharing food with the Sullys.
Though, he wasn’t the only one confused, Jake had been listening from the other side of the tent and was now wondering what Neytiri was planning. Although he loves his wife and trusts her, this sort of behavior from Neytiri towards Spider was odd and maybe he doubted just a bit that she wouldn’t try to harm him. In fact, she probably would, especially with how she acted during the battle against Quaritch.
Is she gonna try to kill me? What if she abandons me or leaves me to my own defenses against a wild beast? No, come on, be rational. She wouldn’t try to kill me, or would she? She didn’t hesitate to try to kill me back then, what would change now? Shit, get yourself together, Spider.
Spider walked back to the Sullys’ Marui with his bow in hand. “I- I’m ready” he nervously breathed out.
“Good. Let’s go.” Neytiri led the way into the forest and Spider followed behind. The both striding quickly, unknowing of Jake closely trailing behind them, just to make sure that Spider would be fine. Or for extra protection in case an animal tried to attack them; the excuse Jake came up with, in case he got caught.
~~~~~
“I think this is the spot Kiri and I were at earlier” affirmed Spider as he searched for his songcord.
“I don’t see it anywhere.” Neytiri pretended to look around, though she was holding it the whole time.
“But I was right here! It couldn’t have disappeared unless someone took it, and who would have come here?!” He grew desperate as he knew the approximate spot he threw it at.
Neytiri quickly bent down and placed part of it under a rock as Spider faced the other direction, looking for it behind a bush. She stood up and pretended to continue looking. Spider approached her area and looked everywhere, lifting every twig, branch and leaf.
“I found it!” He yelled out in excitement, slightly feeling happier as Neytiri had treated him kindly.
“Good, and it’s still in one complete piece.”
“Yea” Spider smiled at the songcord in his hands
“But-“ Neytiri let out
“oh, but what?” Spider tilted his head in confusion
“It’s missing a piece.” Neytiri pointed to an empty spot on his songcord.
“Oh, it’s not missing anything. I just didn’t have anything to fill that spot yet.” reassured Spider.
“No, it is missing something.”
“I’m sorry, I’m not understanding.” Spider stated, now confused.
“I actually wanted to talk to you about something. That is why I called you to the forest out here with me.” She let out, eyes not meeting his as she grew worried with how she was going to deliver her explanation.
“But I thought you wanted to help me find my songcord? I found it!” Spider looked at Neytiri intently as she shied of any eye contact with him.
“Spider, sit.” She placed her hand on his shoulder and lightly pushed him down. She continued standing up, too nervous to stay still as she paced back and forth, tail swishing in anxiousness.
“I knew where your songcord was.” Neytiri admitted
“Huh, how?”
“I put it under the rock.” Neytiri let out as she looked down.
“Oh, you could have just told me that you found it. You didn’t have to do that to make me feel like I actually found it.” Spider smiled at what he thought was a kind gesture from Neytiri.
“That’s not what I meant.” She let out a sigh. “I saw when you threw it earlier today.” Neytiri’s ears bent down in embarrassment at the admittance of listening in on his conversation about her.
Spider’s face dropped as he realized she heard everything he said. Horrified, he stood up, trying to quickly think of an excuse to come up with.
“Don’t be nervous, sit back down.” reassured Neytiri as she pointed to the spot he was previously at. Not knowing what else to do or how to react, Spider sat down, uneasy for what was going to happen next.
“I’m sorry.” Let out Neytiri. Spider’s eyes widened in shock, unsure if he misheard her.
“What?” he asked in confusion.
“Oh great mother!” Neytiri briefly turned around as pleaded for help with her words.
“I’m sorry, Spider. I know it must have been so hard for you to have always been watching my family grow up and not feel part of it. To feel like you have no true home and no one to comfort you for that. I have been a horrible person to you,” managed Neytiri as she looked at Spider nervously, not knowing how he was going to react.
“I, I don’t know what to say…” It was the first time Spider had received such an apology, and the first time Neytiri had showed concern for how he was feeling.
“I know it is difficult not having any parents. I’ve lost my father and that has been very hard, but I was already grown up and had direction in life. I could even not begin to imagine the struggles you have faced while living without a mother or father to raise you as their own.” She placed her hand on his shoulder and continued on.
“We all know that Quaritch is your biological father, but that is no excuse for the way I have treated you. You are not him! And that day when we fought Quaritch and I had your life in exchange for Kiri’s, that… that was unacceptable of me! That was foolish...." she trailed in a low voice. "I had no excuse to take out my anger for Quaritch on you. NO EXCUSE!” She let out.
"If I had caused the death of an innocent child that day, I would never be able to continue to live with the guilt of such an act. And even though it did not go through, I still regret doing that, treating you as some sort of bargai-"
“No! You had to save Kiri, it’s okay, I understand!” Spider reassured her, but mostly himself, trying to come up with excuses in his mind. The words coming out of Neytiri’s mouth were too much for him to handle. Years of internal pain and anguish hidden from everyone until now. She was pouring out all of his inner thoughts and feelings so quickly and suddenly that he thought he was going to burst.
A lump formed in his throat as he tried to hold back tears and simply looked down, not being able to say anything else without the risk of a sob escaping from his lips.
“Please, let me start over with you.” Pleaded Neytiri as she looked up, struggling to prevent the tear that was forming in her eye from falling. “ I will care for you as I have cared for the rest of my children and Kiri. You have always meant only well to my family and have done nothing to deserve such harsh treatment from me. Forgive me.” Neytiri looked into his eyes, waiting for a response.
A small sob escaped Spider’s lips, taken aback by Neytiri’s request for forgiveness.
“Come here, my son.” She motioned for him to approach her.
“Son?” Spider asked.
“Yes. Please, let me care for you as my own son. It's the least I could do to make up for my behavior towards you." Neytiri opened her arms as a single tear stained her cheeks, guilt overtaking her as she prayed that he would accept her plead.
"You want to be my mom?" his mouth hung open, brain barely making the connection at the sudden appeal.
"Yes, I want to be your mother. After years of suffering, it is what you deserve." Her tears now flowing down in numbers. "Please, forgive me. Give me another ch-" Neytiri was cut off.
"Mom!" Spider ran up to her and engulfed her in a hug, streams of tears ran down his face as he closed his eyes and wept.
Neytiri bent down to his height and embraced Spider as one of her own, thumb wiping his cheeks as she held onto him tightly, comforting him and herself in the process.
She held up Spider's hand that was holding his songcord, "Your songcord is missing a piece." she stated.
"I still don't understand what you mean by that." Spider let go of the hug to face Neytiri.
"You are one of us now, part of the family. You now have a mother."
Spider beamed in joy, now having someone to belong to and a mom who would take care of him.
Mom, a word with a new meaning: home, where he belongs.
"Son," Jake smiled behind the tree where he had intently been watching them both.
haha, I never thought that I would be writing for Spider but this idea popped into my head and I just KNEW that I had to write it
I hope this came out good and you all enjoyed it. I know this was a bit wordy and had a lot of dialogue, especially the second half. Hopefully it didn't come out cringey(it sounded a bit off and rough in my head while rereading it but I didn't know how else to fill up the details😬), this is my first fluff fic so bear with me🥴
any interaction is appreciated
do not steal my work and pls don't post it on ao3 or wattpad
I often see people describe Spider as a neglected child. Do you think that is totally accurate? Would Norm and the other scientists have set rules and boundaries? If Lo’ak and Spider did something stupid together would Jake punish both of them? What would a scene like this look like?
Hmmm...buckle up, this might be a long one. 😅
I know I’ve used this trope in my stories as well because it's a great way for Quaritch to manipulate Spider into severing his loyalties to Jake, but I don’t think Spider was as neglected in canon. I think he just had more freedom because, obviously, the scientists who raised him respect and took part in the Na'vi culture over time. So why would they discourage it in Spider?
Norm obviously cares for him as we see him tell Spider to bring a spare mask in the beginning of ATWOW. But when he doesn't chase the kid down to give it to him, it shows a level of trust as well when Spider says he's just going to the village. Even at that young age, Norm knows Spider is aware of the safety rules and the consequences (you know...dying?) if he isn't careful. But I don't see Norm as an authoritative figure to Spider. As long as Spider is safe, Norm doesn't care what he does.
I have read The High Ground comics, mostly because I saw ATWOW before and was so confused where Spider came from and wanted to know where he came from! LOL
The comics do show McCosker treating Spider more of a nuisance than a son...sad face. 🥺 And maybe this comes from that they didn't mind him being a wild child when he was younger but once they had their own kids, they wanted a more structured family system but it was too late to change Spider's behavior and personality. If I had to guess, I'd say Spider's age in the beginning of ATWOW would be accurate to Mary McCosker having her first son. So between continuing their work and a new baby, Spider fell to the wayside.
I think Jake would stumble in punishing Spider...not because he wouldn't have the same authoritative presence over Spider that he would over his own son, it's just he has expectations for his own kids first. Plus, Jake wouldn't be able to use the same punishments with Spider. Like in ATWOW, Lo'ak wasn't allowed to fly for a month...not much of a threat to Spider. I'll take a shot at what it would look like but I'd love insight from anyone who's read this far! 😁💙🐞
I think Jake would start the punishment but leave it up to Nash to follow through or alter it to be more suitable for a human teen like Spider. Scene below!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"What the hell were you two thinking?", Jake snapped with as hushed a tone he could given the late hour. He stood with Lo'ak and Spider a short distance from the Sully marui so Tuk could remain sleeping and the rest of the family didn't have to hear the lecture.
That was a good question. The teenage boys gave each other a side glance, hoping the other would speak up as to why they snuck out in the middle of the night to test their theory if a pa'li would trust Spider enough to ride without a kuru. The answer to their question was, of course, not really. As the aches in the left side of Spider's body could attest from being thrown off only seconds after Lo'ak broke his tsaheylu with the young pa'li so Spider could mount it.
"I'm...ok?" Spider said in a week attempt to diffuse the situation. Of course the boys had tried in the middle of the night, the adults or Neteyam would've stopped them. And they weren't sure who would give the worse lecture on why it was a bad idea...
"That's not the point, bud, what you did was dangerous." Jake said with a shake of his head then turned on his youngest son, "And you, Lo'ak, what did you think would happen when you broke the bond?"
"They don't mind when Spider's around!" Lo'ak tried to argue back, "I didn't think they'd care if he rode them."
"Yea, you didn't think. Neither of you knuckleheads thought about how this could have ended." Jake scolded before looking to the human boy. "Spider, I get it. I really do. I know what it's like to feel trapped in a body that can't keep up with its spirit, but you gotta use your head before you crack it open, kid."
Spider's shoulders sagged a bit and he sighed, looking to the side. He didn't need reminding how different he was from his friends and that he'd never have an avatar body like Jake. He must have been four when he first asked Mr. McCosker if he could have a Na'vi body someday. The man chuckled at the request and passed him off for Norm to break the news it wouldn't happen. The RDA made the avatars; not the scientists who lived the literal double life.
"Miles."
Speak of the devil, Spider grit his teeth as Nash joined them due to Jake's late night call and grumbled, "That's not my name..."
Nash ignored the teen's moodiness and shook his head, "I don't know what to say, Jake...didn't even know he snuck out."
Jake waved a placating hand and agreed with the scientist when he said, "Neither did we about Lo'ak. Don't worry about it, Nash, the boys are ok. This time. Lo'ak, you're grounded. No riding anything for two weeks."
Jake turned his attention from Lo'ak's flattened ears and eye roll to Spider, who raised his eyebrows in anticipation of his punishment. He sighed and thought about the options, "It goes without saying no riding for you, kid. And you're both on marui repair duty for those two weeks."
"Yes, sir..." both boys reluctantly said. Jake took his son by the arm to pull him back towards the marui and back to bed while saying, "And don't think you're sleeping in because you were out late."
"Same for you." Nash agreed as he attempted to do the same to Spider's arm but he recoiled at his touch and rubbed his sore left shoulder. "That hurt? It should. Maybe it'll help get it through your thick skull not to do dumb shit like that."
"Whatever..." Spider said as he turned back towards Hell's Gate with Nash at his side.
"Any time you aren't fixing up the huts, you better have your ass inside. You're on house arrest, Miles. No hanging out with your friends for a month." Nash ordered.
"That's not fair!" Spider said incredulously, whipping his head in his foster father's direction. Jake hadn't said Lo'ak couldn't hang out with him. But he couldn't hang out with Lo'ak or Kiri. Or even go outside? He was going to go insane stuck inside the metal walls and recycled air of Hell's Gate.
"Neither is being woken up in the middle of the night to find out you snuck out to play cowboy. You'll have plenty to do inside. All the labs could use a good cleaning. Now move it before I make it two months." Nash said with extra bite at the end, ignoring the wince in Spider's eyes when he forcibly turned the boy back forward by his sore shoulder and marched him back to Hell's Gate.

Hey tallie, i come to ask for a few more tips on writing-
So- ✨angst✨
Its sooooo hard to write sometimes😩
But anyway, it's about my lylexmilesxoc fic that i asked tips for the other day-
I wanna have some sorts of angst sprinkled in, like I have an idea that lyle's ikran somehow is killed In the battle from ATWOW and he finds the body somehow?-
Also I want ✨trama✨
I am vary unwell for wanting big "strong men" to suffer like this-😅
Oh and I also have the title of the fic and stuff! Its gonna be called "goin' full na'vi"
Since- yk my oc (Syìp) is gonna teach them the na'vi ways and stuffs-
Anyway! Love you!💞
Goin’ Full Na’vi - I like it! 🧡
I love the idea of Lyle finding his ikran’s body. Well, I don’t “love it” love it, but as far as angst goes . . . yeah lol.
You could actually make that really angsty. Like maybe he sees the body and he just freezes cause the shock of seeing his baby lifeless like that is too much to handle right then. And it is his baby. He’s a marine and gives off the mask of a “no strings, don’t care about anything, just doing my mission” person, but deep down no one is truly like that 100%. There’s always something that can break through that persona (like Spider being in danger was able to do for Miles) and I think the death of his ikran could be a huge point of angst for Lyle.
Maybe Lyle had a dog when he was younger or still had one when he was deployed for Pandora. And, as much as he loved that dog, he never bonded with it the way he did with his ikran - was never literally in its soul and entire being like he was with his ikran. That bond is eternal and life changing, and even though the recoms don’t share the same values and bonds with the animals that the Na’vi do, I would imagine even they can’t deny the overwhelming bond between themselves and their ikrans. It would be too powerful to overlook, even if they don’t really understand it fully.
So Lyle seeing his ikran dead would feel like a part of his soul died too. And that can lead into how he handles learning the ways of the Na’vi from there: either it opens his eyes and makes him more open to changing and learning, or it makes him bitter and hostile and unwilling to even try to bond with any other animal.
(Maybe OC can show him how to help send his ikran’s soul to Eywa/have a funeral? 👀)
Also! Depending on if you stick with canon and keep Lyle as the one that shot Neteyam, maybe you can play on that too. He was a huge dick in the movies, sure - but I don’t think anyone signs up for the military with the intention of killing kids. So that can also add some drama with him dealing with that.
(Literally make them fucking suffer LMAO. They deserve it for what they did to Neteyam and they need to WORK to be redeemed. No easy happily ever after for them lol)
Lyle can also go through an entire emotional process of bonding with whatever his next animal is going to be (based on what clan your OC is) and thinking about his original ikran. We don’t see it in the movie cause Neytiri already has her new ikran come ATWOW, but I would think that she probably cried in the days leading up to her taming her new ikran and maybe felt like she was betraying Seze by claiming another.
I think them just trying to learn the ways of being a Na’vi is going to be angsty in general too. I mean (whatever is going to happen in A3 aside), I’d imagine they can’t go back. They lost the war - again. And worse than that is they’re recoms now in Na’vi bodies. They can never go back home to Earth ever. No more seeing their family if they even had any. We never saw how they reacted (other than Miles just for a bit) to realizing they had died and were brought back in a different form. They signed up for it, but did they realize what they were doing when they did? Thats got to mess with your head, being the same person but also not being that same person. But everything happened too quick and I don’t think they really got a chance to process it. Soooo possible identity crisis?
Definitely identity crisis for Miles and then the whole Spider thing are things he would have to deal with.
And them having to learn everything from scratch. No more guns, no more tech. It’s everything they’ve been taught to think is uncivilized - it’s not going to come easy and it might take a while for them to be receptive of it (which could then cause conflict with OC too).
I think they would also use humor like jokes or sarcasm to deal with their uncomfortableness. Miles is just straight up mean mostly in the movies, but Lyle seems like he could be a goofball.
Hope this helps! Love you, Roomie!! 🥰
