Category: Extended Series (WIP)
Warnings: Discussion of sexual situations; language; discussion of pregnancy
A/N: Hello! This is long, I’m sorry! But I think it was necessary and you should enjoy it. A lot happens in this chapter, and you’ll learn some pretty exciting things. Some readers have asked how Casey, who is a brilliant woman & diagnostician, could be blind to Tobias’s feelings for her. First, she is so in love with Ethan, she isn’t even looking for those signs in anyone else; Second, she is close friends with Tobias, and they are both flirtatious, it’s not very different from her relationship with Bryce, so she doesn’t see anything happening, for now. 😊 I hope you enjoy this week’s chapter.
I wouldn't say this was an inspiration for the chapter, but it certainly expresses Tobias's feelings to me. Freaking poor Tobias, I apologize to him at least 10 times a chapter...

Tobias stared at the door with a sense of dread, he knew he was not turning a doorknob, but peeling the lid off a can of worms that had been buried over a decade ago. How it unearthed was inconsequential to him, his only concern was ensuring that it was submerged again as quickly as possible. Steeling himself, he opened the door to her room.
The privacy curtain encircled her bed and he grimaced as he clutched its fabric in his hand, pausing for a moment before thrusting it to the side.
“Good morning, Floria,” he said in a tone that may have passed for pleasant if his lips had not been pressed together so tightly that they vanished into a thin line across his face.
She blinked when she opened her eyes, clearly bewildered by the figure standing before her. Am I hallucinating? That appeared to be the only explanation, but then again, if she were hallucinating, Tobias Carrick is the last man she would expect to see.
“Tobias Carrick. Is that you?”
“The one and only,” he said sliding into a chair near her bed.
“Wow,” she snickered, “what the hell are the chances?”
“Probably about the same as winning the lottery, but with very different outcomes.”
“It’s lovely to see you again too, Tobias.”
He snorted. “It is something all right. What brings you to Boston, I thought you had settled in Chicago.”
“We did. But Peter accepted a position at Tufts last year.”
“Ah, so you and Peter are still together.”
“Sort of. Six months after moving to this wretched town he advised me that he was leaving me for one of his students. So, I am stuck here until our divorce is final.”
Tobias smirked, “Well, then it looks like you’ll be in Beantown for some time.”
“What is that supposed to mean?”
“You’ve always had a flair for the dramatic. I don’t imagine a quick divorce is on your horizon.”
“That’s a rather bold assumption for someone who hasn’t had contact with me in over a decade. People do change, Tobias.”
“Yes, they do. Have you?”
“I like to think so.”
“Well, since I am overseeing your care, I am going to choose to give you the benefit of the doubt. I think that approach would be best.”
“Wait? Overseeing my care? I thought Casey was my doctor.”
“Casey? And how, exactly, did you end up on a first-name basis with Dr. MacTavish?”
Floria shrugged. “She was friendly, we got to talking and she told me to call her Casey.”
“Well, she is no longer your physician,” he grinned, “now, you have me! Talk about winning the lottery!”
“Hmm… not the same outcome. Why isn’t she my doctor any longer? No offense Carrick, or offense, it really doesn’t matter, but I would prefer her to you.”
“Is that any way to treat an old friend? Come on, I’m sure you don’t want to be in here any more than I want you to be. So, we have a mutual interest, getting you well and out that door as quickly as possible. Without sacrificing your care, of course.”
She laughed weakly, “We’re old friends now. That’s a laugh. I want Casey…”
He interrupted brusquely, “Dr. MacTavish.”
“…back on my case.”
He ignored her reaction as he read her chart. “According to the tests Dr. MacTavish ordered, it appears you have a foodborne illness that is resistant to antibiotics, a superbug. I am going to order culture and sensitivity testing, this way we can determine what medication will best treat your condition. I’ll keep you on current medications and fluids to control the symptoms until we can get you better… and on your way.”
She sighed heavily.
“Tobias, if I have the slightest suspicion that you are messing with my treatment…”
“Don’t make me add paranoia to your chart, that would undoubtedly lengthen your time here.”
“Still a comedian, I see.”
“It gets me through.
Now, do you have any questions before I go? I have other patients I need to see.”
She smiled condescendingly. “Sure. Let me see…” she said looking him over, “Hmm… I don’t see a ring, did you ever get married?”
“Irrelevant.”
“Still in touch with Ethan?”
“Also, irrelevant.”
“Am I hitting any nerves?”
“You started hitting nerves the moment I heard your name; but don’t worry, I have access to Novocain. So, before I go, do you have any questions regarding your treatment?”
“No, but stop by when you have a little more time, we simply must catch up.”
“Yeah, well. I’m busy. See you, Floria.”
_______________
Casey was surprised at how taken aback she was when she saw Tobias sitting at Ethan’s desk. Although it was only his first day away from the hospital, she already missed him terribly and having their last night together stolen from them didn’t help things. Tobias looked up and immediately recognized the distressed look on her face.
“Morning, Casey. I know what you’re thinking, it’s hard to see someone so good-looking sitting in this chair for a change, but I promise you will adapt. By the time Ramsey is back, you're gonna miss this.”
She rolled her eyes and smiled in spite of herself. “You are such an ass, you know that?”
“Yet I am one of your closest friends. You may want to analyze that. In fact, considering Lahela is also a close friend and you’re dating Ethan, you know, I don’t need to be a psychologist to tell, you’re pretty fucked up Casey. Sienna may be your only saving grace.”
She shook her head, “Sienna is everyone’s saving grace, T. But you, my friend, are incorrigible.”
“It’s part of my charm. So, why are you in early? I swear I told you to come in at 8:00 when I dropped you off last night.”
“I couldn’t sleep, so I may as well be here?”
“Couldn’t sleep? I would have thought you’d be out for the count.”
“Yeah, well my stomach was off… now before you tell me then cut back on school nights…”
He stopped what he was doing and folded his hands on the desk, looking directly at her, “Now, Dr. MacTavish, I’m going to paint a scene for you, OK? You’re at Donahue’s, on a school night, you’re having a few, letting loose, laughing a bit, turn to your left, who is seated next to you?”
“Probably you, maybe Bryce, sometimes Jackie.”
He held his hands up, “So do you really think I am going to chide you for that?”
“I guess not.”
He shot her one of those damn near-perfect smiles that gave her chills. Yes, she’s in love with Ethan, but she is not dead.
“I’m glad we cleared that up. So, while Ethan is gone if you’re bored, I can assure you have plenty of people who will be happy to entertain you on school nights, including yours truly.”
“I’ll keep that in mind.”
She sat at the table and began reviewing her cases for the day.
“Uhm, T, did you take me off the Dawson case?”
“Yeah,” he said nonchalantly, “I saw you had a lot on your plate, so I took it on.”
“So, you reassigned one of my least complicated cases, to yourself, when your workload has doubled with Ethan gone.”
“It was an administrative decision, Case,” he said dismissively. Casey did not appreciate being dismissed, especially when it came to work-related matters.
“You even took me off as backup? Look, I may not be firing on all cylinders this morning, but I’m still functioning, why don’t you explain what’s going on.”
The uncomfortable look on his face told Casey everything she needed to know. He was hiding something.
“Tobias, you’ve always been upfront with me, please don’t give me a reason to suspect that has changed.”
Frustrated, he stood up and shut the office door. “Come over here,” he said motioning to the couch in the corner of the office.
“I’m going to tell you, but this falls under what happens in the diagnostic team office, stays in the diagnostic team office, OK?”
“Isn’t that just our standard mantra?”
“It’s just a reminder. Did Ethan ever mentioned that we both had a thing for the same woman while we were at Hopkins?”
Casey raised her eyebrows, “He has. Are you telling me that woman is Floria?”
“I am telling you that woman was Flora.”
“Wow,” Casey said stunned, “small world.”
“Sometimes, entirely too small.”
“OK, but if you hadn’t told me, I would have never figured that out and, regardless of that fact, I would still treat her as I would any other patient, and you know that. So this still doesn’t make any sense to me.”
He sighed as his posture stiffened, “Because she is trouble, Casey, and I would prefer if you didn’t interact with her.”
Casey sat back in her chair crossing her arms and legs, “I’m listening.”
Of course, she couldn’t just let it go, this was Casey after all. Normally Tobias found her stubbornness to be one of her most endearing traits, but right now he could have done without it. He began pacing slowly. Just make something up, some stupid excuse, he thought; but then he looked over and saw her eyes fixed on him waiting for a reply. She was right, he valued the fact that she trusted him implicitly, and he did not want that to change. He pulled up a chair.
“Has Ethan told you much about her?”
She chuckled, “Tobias, I didn’t even know her name.”
“Well, then sit back, because we’re about to have storytime, and I will warn you, it’s not a fairy tale.” He rubbed his hand down his face before continuing, “She worked in our advisor’s office, she was young, charming, and very beautiful…”
“She is still very beautiful,” Casey interjected.
He chuckled. “It’s funny, Bryce and I had a conversation about inner beauty being equal to outer beauty recently, let’s just say she is a perfect example of when the two do not match up. Floria loved having two soon-to-be former best friends fighting over her like she was some sort of trophy. The fact that it was eroding our friendship just made it more intoxicating to her. It was all a game and we were too naïve to see we were just pawns. Floria’s only purpose for working at Hopkins was to land a doctor, a successful doctor or one that was known to be a rising star, she wanted to live a comfortable life, with a spouse that wouldn’t be around much so she could pursue… extracurricular activities… and a busy physician seemed to fit that bill. She eventually chose Ethan, and they dated for a little over a year. Later she told me she had preferred me, but selected him because he would be easier to manipulate.”
Casey spit out a bit of her coffee, “Not to interrupt, but she felt Ethan would be more likely to commit? Oh, that’s rich. Was he different then?”
Tobias shrugged. “I don’t know, but she believed so. It was his first serious relationship, and he was just love struck. I always felt he was looking for love he never received from…”
Realizing Tobias didn’t want to say the words, Casey stepped in. “His mother. That’s not abnormal for children who were abandoned.”
“Exactly, and she knew that and used it against him. He was obsessed, if she said jump, he asked how high? She did everything she could to make him insecure, and if he dared to question her about it, she would gaslight him. For someone who was so self-confident when it came to medicine, he was just lost when it came to relationships, so she was right, he was easier to manipulate.”
“It is not that I don’t believe you, T, but… this just sounds so different from the Ethan I know.”
“How do you think he became the Ethan you know? Louise was not the only woman that handed him the bricks he needed to build that wall around himself.”
Casey sighed and shook her head, “You mean the one that I have been throwing my by out trying to help him dismantle?”
Tobias smiled tenderly, “That very one, sweetheart. Anyway… graduation was nearing and if she was going to land him, she had to act quickly. She told him she wanted to follow him when he left for his residency and he was delighted until she made it clear that doing so would require a ring. That was one thing he was not ready to give in on. Marriage scared the hell out of him, and he knew he wasn’t ready, so he said he wanted to wait a while before taking that step. Let’s just say she was displeased that her puppet did not just follow her lead as he had been all along. They didn’t break up, but not because she wanted to stay with him, she was like an animal that plays with its prey before it finally devours it. So, one day, just after they selected an apartment together in Boston, she told him to go to her place and start dinner and that she’d be home soon. It was a setup, she wanted him to walk in on her in bed with our instructor, Dr. Dawson and she went out of her way to make sure Ethan knew she was completely naked except for the large diamond on her left hand. She pretended Ethan came of his own volition and Dawson thought he was an obsessed ex. That put Ethan at risk because Dawson was powerful both at Hopkins and in our profession. If he had made one call, he could have fucked up Ethan’s chances at Edenbrook and beyond. Luckily that didn’t come to pass.”
“Jesus,” Casey gasped.
“Yeah, but that wasn’t the end of it. For a while, he still called her, tried to get her back, and she fucked with his mind something fierce. She told him he was a boy and she needed a man, taunted him about his "mommy" not wanting him, why would he think anyone could ever love him, he would never be able to give a woman what they needed…and more shit like that. The problem was, he was desperate to have her back to prove he was loveable after all, and since she controlled him the entire time they were together, he internalized everything she said. After that, the Ethan we all knew was gone. He withdrew. He was broken. Everyone tried to help but, he was building that wall, and no one was getting in. She was treacherous, Case, and I haven’t seen her in over a decade, but I don’t think people like her change. She moved to Boston not all that long ago and it appears Dawson left her for one of his students. I’m sure that shattered any stability she may have had. I don’t want her anywhere near Ethan or you.”
“Wow. That’s a lot to take in. I certainly wouldn't associate with her, but we’re doctors, Tobias, we’re supposed to treat anyone who needs our care. But, considering all this, do you think you should be treating her? Maybe it’s best to toss this one back to Dr. Reynolds?”
“I want to keep an eye on her. I got her labs back this morning, it looks like a drug-resistant super-bug, and I can probably get her out of here within 2-weeks and make sure she is long gone before Ethan gets back. I want her on my radar.”
“Does she know Ethan is at Edenbrook? I mean, she knew his residency was and he isn’t exactly low profile.”
“I can’t say with any certainty. I am fairly confident she doesn’t know about your relationship with him, and we should keep it that way. Casey, can you please just trust me on this? Please.”
“Of course. You know I trust you and if you feel so strongly…”
“I do. Ahh, I didn’t expect this to be such an angst-filled morning.”
“Ehh, we work in a hospital. Angst is our life.” She gave Tobias a quick hug, “Thank you for sharing all of this with me. And, while I am a big girl, it does mean a lot to me that you care enough to look out for me… and for Ethan.”
He took her hand and gave it a quick squeeze, “Well, that’s what friends do. Now, enough of this bullshit, on to something more pleasant. Are you coming to my 4th of July party this weekend or what? All of your roommates, as well as Raf and Bryce, have responded, but not you and, frankly, I’m insulted.”
“I assumed it was a given! Of course, I’ll be there! The best company and, according to Bryce, the best view in Boston. Also, I’m dying to see your place; I heard it is breathtaking.”
“It’s adequate.”
She rolled her eyes, “Yeah, that’s how Bryce described it. I guess I’ll see for myself.”
_______________
Bryce and Raf strung twinkling red, white, and blue lights around the perimeter of Tobias’s palatial apartment. He did not feel they were necessary, but he could no longer bear to hear Bryce going on about the importance of a festive environment, so it was just easier to let him have his way. Tobias made sure that the bar was fully stocked and was preparing food for the buffet table when Casey arrived with Aurora, Sienna, and Jackie in tow.
“Hey ladies, welcome to my new digs!”
“Holy crap! Bryce did not exaggerate; this place is amazing!” Sienna squealed.
“Jesus, T,” Jackie gushed, “I thought Ramsey’s place was next level, but this is insane.”
“It’s ade…”
“Tobias, if you call this palace adequate one more time, so help me…this is not merely adequate.” Casey scolded.
“OK, fine. It’s a fucking amazing apartment, is that better?” he laughed.
“Much!”
Raf agreed, “I have been in Boston my whole life and I've never seen a view like this.”
“Yeah, we won’t have to fight for a good seat to see the fireworks tonight!” Aurora agreed.
“Well, if you still want a friendly competition, I do have a balcony off my bedroom. Four can fit out there comfortably, so you can fight over who gets to sit there if you like."
“Goddamn, a balcony too!” Jackie said, “I want to see the rest of this place!”
“The grand tour will commence when the food is done.”
“Well, then let me give you a hand. I mean, being your favorite co-worker alone should guarantee me a balcony spot, but I’m not taking any chances. I was the first to offer T, remember that” she said pointing a celery stalk at him with a smirk. “So, am I on veggie chopping duty?”
“Sure, I’ll make the dip. Teamwork!” he said giving her a high-five.
“You know, when determining who gets the VIP section, I think you should remember who provided these stunning decorations and who tolerates your shit the most,” Bryce said with a nod.
“That’s some mutual tolerating there, Bud!”
“So, what made you decide to upgrade, T? I mean, this is a lot of space for one person, you getting to that settling down with a family age?” Elijah laughed.
“What the fuck Elijah? Personal much? Why don’t you just ask his favorite sex position while you’re at it!” Jackie chided.
Tobias burst out laughing, “Really it’s OK, no offense taken. No, Elijah, I am not currently looking to start a family, I just wanted my dream place and I figured, I’m nearing 40 what was I waiting for? And Jackie, for the record, it is the g-whiz.”
“G-whiz, I’ve never heard of that one. Bryce, hand me my phone, I need to Google this shit,” Elijah said eagerly.
“You don’t know the freaking g-whiz?” Bryce said incredulously, “That’s it, party game, we’re playing Pictionary – sex positions edition!”
“God, I hope you’re joking Bryce,” Sienna said blushing.
“Yeah, I think I’m going to leave this room now” Casey added.
“You can’t, you’re helping with the food,” Tobias stuck a carrot stick in dip and dabbed it on Casey’s nose.
“Seriously T, you do that knowing I am not going to retaliate in this gorgeous kitchen.”
“That’s why I did it,” he smirked.
After the food was prepared Tobias gave a grand tour, everyone was beyond impressed, but Jackie had a plan of action.
“You know our lease is up at the end of September, so I will just take the larger guest room T. I mean, I’ll even take the smaller one, I’m not picky.”
“The problem is, once I take one of you in, I have to take all of you in, and I just can’t put up with Lahela that much. But I have been meaning to ask, where are you all going now that your residencies are ending? I haven’t gotten the lowdown yet?”
“We’re all staying pretty close, which has me so happy!” Sienna beamed.
“Yeah, well, you know about me!” Casey said, “Jackie and Sienna are also staying on at Edenbrook, Aurora is heading to Brigham, so she’s still in Boston, and Elijah is abandoning us for Yale/New Haven, but he’s within driving distance, so yeah, we’re all pretty happy that the gang is kind of staying together.”
“So are the four of you keeping the same place with Elijah leaving?” Raf asked.
“Jackie, Aurora, and I are going to get a new place together, time for an upgrade,” Sienna said.
“Yeah, and Casey is abandoning us to go live in sin with Ramsey!” Jackie laughed.
“Oh, I didn’t realize…” Tobias said a bit ruefully.
Casey felt guilt welling inside her. Tobias is her good friend, yet he learned that she and Ethan were in a relationship when they formally announced it to the team, and, now this is how he learned that they were moving in together. “I’m sorry, I hadn’t mentioned it T. It’s only because, officially, it’s still a way off. I’m staying at my place for the most part until the lease is up.”
Noticing the dynamic between the two, Sienna and Jackie exchanged a perplexed look.
“Hey, you don’t owe me an explanation, Case.” Tobias chuckled trying to recover, “It’s great news. I have to give you credit, you’re almost making the man almost human!”
“It’s been a Herculean task but, someone’s gotta do it! But on to the important business at hand! It’s beginning to get dark, when will you announce that I am sitting on the balcony.”
“Ah, that!” Tobias stood and grabbed a bowl and off the counter. “I put each of our names in here, the first four I pick get balcony seating.”
“Four? Pick three!” Aurora stated, “You’re the host, you should be out there!”
“I agree with Aurora!” Raf said, “Just make sure I’m one of the three that you pick!”
“OK, three it is then. Now, the moment of truth! Who will the lucky winners be! And remember, you will be lucky because you’ll be watching with me, it has nothing to do with the balcony!” Tobias said with a smirk.
“The company being a winning factor will only factual if I end up on the balcony too, T!” Bryce winked.
“Now that we let Scalpel Jockey get the last word in, the first lucky winner is…. Sienna!”
“Woo-hoo!”
“The second spot goes to… Elijah!”
“Ha-ha! Suckers!”
“OK, and the final winner is…” he selected…Jackie. But he said, “Casey.”
“As well it should be!!!”
“OK, I suggest we refill our drinks because the fireworks will be starting any moment."
Everyone followed Tobias to the kitchen, except for Bryce. He was suspicious. He noticed that Tobias crumpled the three winning names together and tossed them on an end table, he surreptitiously picked them up: Sienna, Elijah, Jackie. He looked over at his friend sitting at the kitchen counter, beaming as he engaged in a lively conversation with Casey. Bud, what the hell are you doing?
“OK losers, I’m heading to the balcony to watch the fireworks!” Elijah yelled.
“Does he realize we have the same view, but we have air conditioning?” Aurora asked.
“Juveniles,” Jackie responded.
As Casey made her way to the balcony, she stumbled into a wall.
“Hey, you OK Case?” Sienna asked concerned.
“Yeah, I’m alright,” she said rubbing her head, “just a little woozy.”
“Have you had a lot to drink?” Tobias asked.
“Just one beer. My stomach has been off, so I stuck with seltzer.”
“You’re probably just exhausted. Sit over here,” Tobias said motioning to a set of plush chairs in the corner of the balcony.
“I think I will.”
“Sienna, why don’t you take the other.”
“No, T. I’ve been sitting all day, I’d rather stand at the railing anyway, I’m short.”
“Sienna,” Casey laughed, “you will see just as well from here.”
“Casey! I want a front-row seat,” she said stamping her foot.
“Well, then I guess this seat is reserved for the old man of the group!” Tobias said falling back into it.
Casey turned to him and smiled, “This is just perfect Tobias, thanks so much for inviting us.”
“Hey, you know you’re welcome anytime, kid.”
The fireworks began right on schedule. The resplendent colors exploding over the Boston skyline were truly a sight to behold and Tobias’s apartment provided an unparalleled view. Everyone stood transfixed at the dazzling display taking place above them, everyone except for Tobias. As far as he was concerned the most enchanting sight that evening could not be found in the night sky, for she was already seated beside him. Casey’s expression was as joyful as a child seeing their presents under the tree on Christmas morning, her smile was captivating, and the fireworks were casting bright colors onto her face, transforming her into a work of art, she took his breath away. He knew he should not stare but found it impossible to divert his gaze. How many nights had he sat in that very spot dreaming of her sitting at his side? How could he possibly turn away now that she was there? He found his heart both full, then shattered within the same moment; he knew he had to let go of his feelings for Casey, but he had no idea how or even if it was possible at all.
As the evening dwindled, everyone offered to help clean up, but Tobias insisted he had it covered. Bryce pointed out he was responsible for the amazing décor so he should stay and take it down and Tobias couldn’t argue with that. Once everyone made their way out, Tobias grabbed two bottles of beer from the refrigerator and tossed one Bryce’s way.
“Why don’t we take a load off for a few before we clean this mess up.”
“Sounds good to me,” Bryce said taking a seat at the counter “and while we do that, why don’t you explain this to me?” He tossed the crumpled names Tobias’s way.
He sighed, “It’s not a capital offense, Bryce,”
“I didn’t say it was, but…”
“Bryce, before start scolding me, we sat together on a balcony. I wasn’t making moves on her and, even if I was stupid enough to do so, she is madly in love with Ethan, remember? Nothing is happening here Bryce.”
“That’s bullshit and you know it. You did this to be close to her, to have more time with her, and how is that going to help you move past this? The longer this goes on, the worse it will be.”
Tobias took the pillow next to him and tossed it to the other end of the couch, clearly frustrated. “Bryce, let me ask you something. Do you know the secret to just turning your feelings off? Because, if you do, please share it with me, because I don’t how. I love her Bryce. There, I finally said the words out loud, I love her and don’t know how I just turn that off.”
“I know you do," Bryce said sympathetically, "you didn’t need to say the words, I can see it. I feel for you, man, and I wish I had the answers, but one thing I know is you looking for opportunities to be closer to her… you’re playing with fire, and it is only a matter of time before someone gets burned. You’re acting like you’re in control, but you’re not.”
“I’m fine Bryce. She’s one of my best friends, I am not going to stop spending time with her. We discussed that.”
Bryce shook his head.
“What?” Tobias said, clearly becoming annoyed.
“Nothing man, just don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
_______________
Two Weeks Later
Tobias sat at Ethan’s desk, he would be returning this seat to his boss and friend in just one week, and it could not come soon enough. It had nothing to do with the increased and more complex workload he inherited, he had handled that with aplomb earning praise from Naveen and gratitude from Ethan. But he needed Ethan’s presence to serve as a reminder that Casey only belonged to one person, and that was Ethan. His absence made it too easy for Tobias to deceive himself. The camaraderie and strong affection he and Casey shared had led patients and others to falsely believe that they were more than friends in the past, now Tobias realized that left unguarded, it could cause him to deceive himself as well. He needed Ethan back.
He looked at his watch: 12:35. Casey was meeting him in the office for a working lunch at 1:00, he told her he would arrange the food. Fusili carbonara and chicken piccata from Antonio’s. Why wouldn’t he get her two favorite dishes from her favorite restaurant near the hospital? Bryce was right, he was not in control.
When he returned to the office Casey was seated at the table appearing very tired and anxious. Yet another reason Tobias was eager for Ethan to get home, everyone was overworked, but it seemed to be taking a toll on Casey most of all.
“Hey Case, I got your favorites here.”
“Is this Antonio’s?” she asked.
“Yeah, I figured we may as well eat well.”
She only offered a weak smile as she placed a minuscule piece of chicken and a couple of tablespoons of fusilli on her plate. Tobias raised a brow, typically food from Antonio’s elicited a reaction similar to what the team now called the Memorial Day bagel lust incident.
“Everything OK, kid? You don’t seem like yourself.”
“I’m fine. I’m reviewing the notes for the new admit, want to go over them together.”
“Well, sure, that’s why we’re here, right?”
“Oh, yeah. Right.”
She lifted a forkful of fusilli to her mouth and, gagging, immediately spit it out. After gulping down some water she said, “Tobias, taste your fusilli, is there something wrong with it.”
He took a forkful. “No, same as always to me.”
He watched as her face grimaced, she was trying hard to conceal it, so he didn’t dare bring it up.
They began reviewing the new patient's records, but Casey was not fully present.
Without a word, Casey lowered her face into her hands and said, “Tobias, I need a friend.”
He jumped up and moved across the table to sit next to her, he looked at her with worry etched on his face, “Hey, what’s up, Casey, I’m here.”
“What happens here, stays here mode in effect right?”
“You can always trust me.”
She diverted her eyes. “I’m late.”
“For what, we don’t have to meet until…. ohhh… do you mean…”
“Yep. That late. I just realized today; I’ve been so busy I lost track of time and…” she trailed off as she tried not to cry.
“OK,” he said placing a hand on her back, “Have you tested?”
“Nope. I was hoping ignoring it would make it go away.”
“Yeah, um, you’re a doctor you know it doesn’t work that way.”
She shot him a look and he took note that this was not the time for sarcasm.
“I am late. Then there are my stomach issues, and not being able to eat my favorite fusilli, thank you for getting that by the way…”
“Don’t mention it…”
“I mean and I’m crying a lot, like now, I’m going to cry and I .. I…” she closed her eyes to prevent tears from falling.
“Come here,” he said taking her in his arms. “Casey, let’s go downstairs and get you tested. You have to know what you’re dealing with and, right now you don’t, you could be worrying yourself over nothing.”
“NO! I don’t want to go downstairs. I don’t need the entire hospital talking about this!”
He looked at his phone. “Inez is on duty. You can talk to her; you know she can be trusted.”
“OK. Will you come with me?”
“That was never even a question, let’s go.”
As expected, Inez was helpful and understanding. Unfortunately, the lab was backed up and it would take about an hour for the results to come in.
“That’s not a problem,” Tobias told Casey, “we’re going to the office and I’ll clear our schedules for the next hour.”
“T, you really don’t…”
“It’s not up for discussion, come on.”
Tobias locked the office door.
“OK, why don’t you lie down on the couch, you should rest.”
“Rest isn’t likely right now Tobias.”
“Have you told Ethan?”
She shook her head as she clenched her eyes shut. “No, if it’s positive I’ll tell him, but if not, there is no need.”
“Casey, he loves you and this involves him, I think you should…”
“He’ll be mad at me, it’s my fault.”
Tobias didn’t mean to but a small smile spread on his lips, “Casey, he knows how this works and the fault would be assigned to him too.”
“You don’t understand we were at.. uhm, I’ll spare you the details.”
“Thank you. But whatever they are, Case, I know Ethan would never be mad at you over this.”
“I know, I’m just scared. Plus, he is so busy, when I do get to talk to him he is just exhausted so, I don’t want to worry him unless I have to.”
“Well, how about this, let’s get the results back and take it from there.”
She nodded.
“What can I do to help you now?”
“Can we talk? Unrelated stuff. I need the distraction.”
“Sure,” he said taking a seat on the other end of the couch.
“OK, what should we talk about?” She asked.
“Your pick.”
After a moment she appeared excited to have thought of a topic.
“OK. Tobias, what made you decide to become a doctor?”
“Random, but OK. My grandfather was a biologist, my dad was a pediatrician, and my mom is a nurse, so you can see there is a little history there.”
“Really? I had no idea. How did I not know this?”
“Because I never told you, he laughed. “So, what inspired you? Doctors in your family?”
“Oh, no, not at all. But, in a way, my grandfather was responsible for me wanting to be a doctor.”
“How so?”
“He had this old toy doctor's kit; it was his from when he was a child. I was obsessed with it. It was a metal box containing a toy stethoscope, thermometer, and knee hammer. He even painted it purple for me, my favorite color. I’m sure it was considered totally unsafe by the time I was using it” she said with a laugh. “I examined my parents, grandparents, pets, stuffed animals, you name it. That’s when I started telling everyone I was going to be a doctor.”
He smiled, “Your story is much better than mine.”
“Yeah, I always said I would display it when I became a doctor myself.”
“So why didn’t you?”
She shrugged, “It got lost when my family moved, what are you going to do? Has it been an hour yet?”
He laughed, “You know it hasn’t.”
“OK, so what else can we talk about… oh, I know. How did your lunch with Ethan go? I asked him, but you know, I got a ‘very well’ and he moved on.”
“It was really nice. He said you were the inspiration.”
“Me? How so?”
“Because you’re important to both of us and he felt we should repair our relationship. I’m really glad because I realized I miss him and I’m glad we are friends again.”
She smiled. “That makes me so happy. You know, you’re both really special to me too, in case you didn’t notice.”
He grinned, “I did.”
“T, thanks for staying with me.”
“Hey, no place else I would be.”
She smiled, “How are you still single? You’re just amazing …” she trailed when she saw his face fall a bit, “Oh, I’m sorry, that was inappropriate…”
He interrupted her, “Case, it is fine, if you were just my co-worker it might be inappropriate, but you’re my friend. I’m sitting here with you waiting on a pregnancy test result, I think that qualifies as more intimate than asking me why I am single.”
“True. OK, then why are you?” she said with a giggle.
He sat in silence, considering his answer, “I spent most of my adult life avoiding anything serious, it just didn’t want that. But right now… I’m just not up for it yet.”
“You still care for her, the woman you told me about, don’t you? I can see it in your eyes.”
He put on a wistful smile, “Yes, I do. Very much.”
“And you’re sure she’s not interested.”
“150%. She is just… she’s very special, and it is going to take some time to get over her. It wouldn’t be fair for me to date others when I feel this way, so I’m off the market for now. I will let you know as soon as I decide to get back out there.”
“Tobias, I’m so sorry. I wish you could have been there for you when all this was happening, I feel like a shitty friend. But I’m here for you now.”
“You’re not shitty friend, it wasn’t something I wanted to share. That’s not on you or anyone else.”
“Well, for what it’s worth, I think she’s an idiot.”
He swallowed, “Well, it’s a little more complicated than that. But you don’t need to worry about me.”
“So says the man sitting here worrying about me. What did you say earlier, that’s what friends do.”
Just then she got a text. “It’s Inez,” she said running to get her laptop “she rushed my labs. She is a freaking angel.”
Casey tapped ferociously at the keyboard to pull up her chart… “YES!” she said spinning around in the chair, “Two tests, both negative. Oh, thank God.”
“See, I told you to stay positive. Well, in this case, you didn’t want positive, but… you know what I mean.”
“Oh, thank God! I would have freaking died. I wouldn’t have been able to handle that right now.”
“That’s not true, you handle whatever is thrown at you with grace. Besides, having a little Casey out there would have made the world a better place in my opinion. Now, another little Ethan, hmm.. that’s up for debate.”
She pushed his shoulder and laughed.
“But I get it’s not the right time. I’m happy for you, and I want you to take the rest of the day off.”
“Normally I would disagree, but I think I will take you up on that today."
She stopped before heading out the door.
"Hey, T, if you get out at a decent time, want to come over and watch a movie together or something. Sienna and Jackie are working the late shift tonight, Aurora has a date and Elijah hasn’t been home a lot lately…”
“Do you not want to be alone?”
“No, I really don’t.”
“I just … I have a lot to get done here. But our friendly neighborhood Scalpel Jockey text me a while ago to see if I wanted to hang out tonight. I’m sure he’d be down for some friend time with you, why don’t you give him a buzz.”
“I’ll do that. Thank you for today, Tobias. Seriously, you have no idea how much it means to me.”
“It’s nothing, go rest. Text Bryce!”
He stared out the window after she left the room. Phone in hand, it took all his willpower to stop himself from texting her saying he was free after all. His heart and his head were competing for control, and his head finally won.
His phone rang: INCOMING: Ethan
“Hey, buddy, how are things going at Mayo?”
“They’re going well, lots of good things accomplished here. But I can’t wait to get home.”
“Yeah, I can’t wait for you to be back too.”
_______________
Sienna was sitting at the nurse’s station yawning. She was one of the few people who didn’t hate the night shift because she enjoyed the relative quiet, but she was just too tired today. She started walking down the hall to get a cup of coffee when Jackie came running up behind her.
“Hey Si, wait up! Do you know if Casey is at home, or is she staying over Ethan’s tonight?”
“I think she’s home, not much sense in staying at Ethan’s until he is back from Mayo. Plus, if she wants to spend more time with us before moving in with him, her time is running out,” she laughed.
“Oh, good! I left my phone home by mistake; I was hoping she could run it over to me. Could you call her and ask for me?”
"Sure thing! I’ll do it now.”
Floria had been laying in bed, wide awake and overheard the conversation in the quiet hallway. She sat up, took out her phone and Googled Ethan Ramsey. A smirk spread across her face. So, Ethan is here at Edenbrook. “My boyfriend is the opera aficionado …” “or is Casey staying at Ethan’s tonight?” Interesting. Very interesting. She began typing a text:
Dr. Reynolds, I have changed my mind, I think I would like to discuss that offer with you after all.
Placing the phone down on the nightstand, she rolled over and made herself comfortable. A smile spread across her face.

Just binge read the Bone Season series by Samantha Shannon and !!!!!! amazing. Now I want to yell about it for a bit, bear with me (essay incoming sorry)
- the concept already, urban fantasy dystopia, just feels both so fresh and so obvious it's surprising it's not more of a Thing, and the world building is next level. the modern technology + Victorian aesthetics is not just cool (although it is) it evokes the fact that Victorian England was a brutal, very unequal and fucked up society, so it really fits a dystopia. Plus Scion is also an evil empire that invades other countries, which is also thematically relevant, as is the fact that the MC is Irish.
- I'm obsessed with the concept of a magical mob and Underworld (unsurprisingly) and people who are pushed to the margins of society because their very existence has been outlawed and bond together to find freedom but are also forced to exist in a state of constant brutality and the damage it all does
- the first book throws a lot of plot and world building at you in ways that can be a bit overwhelming and confusing, and doesn't give you a lot of time to connect emotionally to the characters, so that took me a while, but it's really worth pushing through for, i love them all now.
- I love the main character, Paige, so much. she's a survivor ; clever, witty, action oriented and very down to earth ; she's also very competent in ways that feel earned, and interestingly flawed, not some gratuitous emotionless Strong Female Character with plot armor or a 'not like other girls' complex. She's proud and she has a mean, ruthless streak. She's brave, too loyal for her own good, and impulsive to the point of recklessness, and sometimes her gambles pay off and sometimes she has to pay a very heavy price for them (it made me yell at the page several times). It's really cool to see a female MC that is so invested in the politics of her world. I hate that so many female mains in fantasy or dystopia are these isolated loners who hate politics, only really care about a handful of people and want to retire to their husband/2.5 kids happy ending as fast as possible, with a plot-line that focuses over personal development rather than political goals, because it sends this weird message that women are not meant to be in the public space. (Not making this into a rant about the Shadow and Bone books but lol I could)
Paige has to shoulder massive burdens that nobody in their right mind should want and that's understandable, but you do get the sense that she enjoys being a criminal, running free and scheming and climbing over roofs and outwitting her enemies and sticking it to the government. She doubts herself sometimes, worries about people only valuing her for her powers, but she doesn't have a lot of time to waste on self-consciousness, angsting or moping about her feelings. It's very empowering to read. And she's fiercely compassionate in moments where it's actually very dangerous for her to be. She has this constant struggle between the part of her that finds injustice intolerable and the part of her that is grimly pragmatic. This is exactly what women in fiction have been excluded from for too long, complex dilemmas about action and morality taken seriously, not just love triangle shit. It's great. Although wow does she deserve a break. Ouch. Baby </3
- the world is incredibly fucked up but there seems to be no sexism/homophobia/racism, which is refreshing to read. the main romance is m/f but there's a lot of ambient queerness, just because and not to 'make a point' ; the author has confirmed that the MC is demisexual, her bff is gay, the love interest is pan, there's a badass trans commander/mob boss, you get randomly informed that this henchwoman has a wife or that this mobster is trying to save his boyfriend, it's great (and it's not a word-of-god after the fact thing like jkr it's actually shown on the page, they just don't use any labels)
- the main romance is a slow build that is very low-key at first, enemies to reluctant allies to friends to lovers, but becomes really powerful over time. the fact that the MC is demi means it can't rely on 'omg so hot i can't stop thinking about him!' clichés - nothing wrong with attraction at first sight but it often leads to lazy storytelling and irritating instalove, tell over show romances. the characters are drawn to each other but it's more of a meeting of minds and souls at first, admiration and common goals, and their actions are still first and foremost guided by strategy, not sentiment. (sidenote I've often wondered if i wasn't at least a little demi myself. that would explain why i have such high standards for credible romance lmao.) also there's a significant power imbalance at the start but it gets very much deconstructed before anything can happen and it's an interesting negotiation. Warden could easily have fit in the 'brooding immortal douchebags' category but there's an alienness and gentleness to him that lifts him above that, along with the respect and space he gives to Paige and their shared experience of trauma and hopes for a better world. Her hot-headedness and his calm, deadpan sort-of-humor play off each other really well. Also I love the idea that develops over the series that their connection isn't a distraction from their fight but that it makes them stronger and allows them to resist and find solace from the deluge of constant horror that is their world. their whole dynamic in s4...no words. also the second time i read a scene where one character is bandaging the other's wounds and there's touch aversion involved and like, I LOVE that.
- lots of complex different bad guys. some are just brutes, some are sadistic masterminds with superiority complexes, some are deceptive and manipulative and morally ambiguous. love that the Big Bad Guy is a woman - female characters being fully realized means that sometimes, they're just incredibly evil (as long as it's not tied to their gender, i love that). Paige and Jaxon's relationship is fascinating - he's a terrible, manipulative person but i do feel in his own way, he cares about her and wants to see her thrive ; but that's not necessarily a good thing as he sees it as a justification to make her go through awful things. She knows he's awful but she can't get over the fact that he took her in, taught her, believed in her and gave her a sense of belonging and freedom when nobody else did ; she was super proud of being his mollisher and it makes sense it would take time for her to rebuild her sense of self without that, on her own. I like that the ambiguity isn't resolved (it's also a very good illustration of how emotionally abusive parental dynamics can get their hooks in you). The fact that he's aroace really works there too, could have been a lot creepier otherwise and i feel that's really not the point.
- also it's really cool how each book really feels like its own thing, it never feels repetitive, there are huge twists and a shift of focus each time - the penal colony in Oxford in the first, the London Underworld in the second, traveling through England in the third, Paris in the fourth, etc. The pace is pretty breakneck and i wasn't bored for one moment - actually at times i would have liked more quiet moments w the characters. There are two novellas that focus more on that and the second one is an exploration of trauma and recovery that's particularly hard hitting and beautiful. The first book does feel like a beginner novel, it's a bit clunky in terms of exposition, pacing and character development etc ; and there are moments where all the violence and brutality feel a bit repetitive ; but overall the story builds up so beautifully and in so many complex ways it's just really worth it and it's not for nothing i read the four books and two novellas in five days. just have to wait for the next one now though argh
- anyway more people should read it

Did you ever start a WIP out of spite or because you were annoyed by something? If so what was it that sparked the WIP and how did it go? ~writinginslowmotion
Hi @writinginslowmotion, redirecting the ask, huh? Well, it happened twice. Or more, I am in my third time this happened.  The first time it was my NaNoWriMo project for 2018 named “Always Prepared”.  It happened out of spite because I always end as the butt of the joke because I carry this big bag with me that has a lot of stuff in it you might need when away from home like a small first aid kit, a small pocket knife, wet wipes, snacks, etc. I wanted to write a story where the MC has a bag like this and it helps to get through some sort of tough days. That is how the first chapter came to existence.  I finished it three months later, it is already in the third draft and a friend of mine got to read it earlier this year because I wanted to distract her from being home thanks to corona. Her enthusiasm for the story told me I am on a good way with it, and she gave me some ideas on how to tweak certain scenes.  The second time happened last year in spring. I was kinda late to the whole “Lucifer” thing and happened to be able to watch three seasons in one row and seasons 3... well, I still seriously doubt the authors kept in mind what the characters already achieved. It got me so frustrated because they forgot the character development that happened in the previous season many times, that I started to go “Fuck it, I research the whole devil thing now and make my own story.” Well, having studied theology cam in handy here and soon I got an idea what kind of devil I wanna write and turned it into “No Rest for the Wicked”. I wrote it for Camp NaNo July 2019 and finished it and it’s the sequel “A little Wicked” within six weeks. Yeah, I was kinda possessed. lol  That leads us to today. I try to fight the whole day to start another project out of spite. This time it is the fault of “Miraculous Ladybug”. I mean, I love the show and for a PG-rated show it has some serious topics going on but the whole love triangle thing and keeping your secret identity thing got me frustrated like hell, especially since the third season played multiple times with the moment the two MC’s learned who the other was only to erase it again. It sparked the idea of a thing for an older audience and with magical tattoos instead of jewelry and no magical animals but the tattoos being passed down from within a family or from mentor to a trustworthy trainee, depending on how it is installed with the tattoo in question. This is still in planning and only an idea so far.

HPHM Prediction/Headcanon - The Looming Love Triangle
It’s no secret that the majority of the Hogwarts Mystery fandom wanted to romance their favorite characters, and Jam City answered our call with the Celestial Ball and First Date Side-Quests. But the side-quests have always been something of a divergent canon. Even if you pick the same character for both events, they don’t become your significant other in the canon story-line. The canon has basically steered clear of romance altogether.
Well, for the most part.
“I’ve never told anyone this, but I fancy her.”
Hey, remember that line? Whatever happened with that sub-plot, anyway? If you tell Jae that you fancy Penny, the game proceeds to have MC confess to her, without player input, at the worst possible time - the only way to canonize your feelings for Penny is to put even more stress on her shoulders. When MC confesses to her, she reasonably points out that she’s too worried about Beatrice to even think about who she has a crush on. However, MC and Penny agree to have that conversation later, once Beatrice is safe.
Then...nothing. MC and Penny never have that conversation, even after Beatrice is rescued. Sure, come sixth year, Penny is still worried about her sister for all new reasons. Plus, MC has enough on their platter trying to track Jacob and Rakepick, as well as keeping Merula and “New” Ben in check. But there isn’t even a mention of this sub-plot.
And it’s not like there wasn’t an opportunity, either.
At the end of Year Five, MC has a scene with Penny and Beatrice. They bring out the stuffed Puffskein that Beatrice made for them. Penny thanks MC for rescuing her, and offers sympathy for what happened in the Underground Vault. At this point in the story, Beatrice is safe, and still mostly acting like her old self. She hasn’t pulled away from Penny. She hasn’t gone Goth-Beatrice yet. So this would have been the perfect opportunity for MC and Penny to talk about their feelings for each other. But it doesn’t happen. Penny’s promise amounts to nothing. Choosing to fancy Penny amounts to nothing.
I have a sneaking suspicion that Jam City originally planned to involve romance in the main story of Year Five, more than they ultimately did. At the same time that MC can confess to Penny, we get dialogue options like asking Hagrid what he knows about romance, and Diego asking if we have a crush. This is all in-story. I suspect that romance was going to feature more prominently in Year Five’s narrative, but the developers ultimately changed their minds and put these events into Timed Side-Quests instead. Which leaves Penny the only character that we can canonically crush on, but even doing so goes nowhere. It almost seems like the developers hope that MC/Penny shippers will be satisfied with the dating side-quests, and just want everyone to forget about that sub-plot.
Then of course...there’s Merula.
I’m gonna say something that might offend people outside of the Pro-Merula crowd. I’m gonna say something controversial, and brave - Jacob’s Sibling canonically finds Merula attractive. I don’t say this to step on anyone’s head-canons, or interpretations of their own MC. I don’t say this to anger the Anti-Merula crowd. But it’s there in the text. Which isn’t to say that they’re in love with Merula, or that the ship is canon. Just that a certain attraction is there, and that’s clear from the flavor text in Care of Magical Creatures. From MC dwelling on Merula’s “elusive” scent and trying to figure out what it is...to comparing her to creatures and referring to her as “Dangerous, guarded, and weirdly cute.” To MC literally drawing her as different magical creatures. These things aren’t based on player choices, they happen regardless.
In general, the ship-tease between these two characters has been off-the-charts. I don’t say that as a Merula/MC fan, I say it as someone who can pick up on cues. Everywhere you turn, there are lines like “I’ve never seen you this angry before. I like it.” and “I always knew you liked having me around.” Don’t even get me started on the “Merula Snyde Infatuation” scene. Penny may have the most exposure, but Merula is, or was, an antagonist - which allows her to directly affect the story in more dynamic ways. It creates a relationship that is essentially everything Drarry fans ever wanted. By the time we reach the chapter “About Merula” the development of MC’s relationship with Merula is unmatched.
And then, she met Jacob.
In addition to everything else, retreating back into her shell and going through PTSD after the events of the Portrait Vault, Merula has found herself a new crush. Jacob hasn’t been back for long, but he’s managed to single-handedly infuriate half of the HPHM Fandom by being the new object of Merula’s affections, even though he barely acknowledges her existence. Several people consider this the final straw with Merula, and are jumping ship. But if you think this is Jam City trying to make the MC/Merula pairing less popular, think again.
Because for the second time in the game, the player has the opportunity, in-story, to canonize romantic feelings for another character. And of course, it’s Merula. She asks point-blank if you’re jealous of her fancying Jacob, and you can say yes. The Dating Side-quests, if you’ve completed them and romanced Merula, will get a mention. But they aren’t required or anything. Now in Year Six, players can confess romantic feelings to Merula. That’s why their doing this. Merula’s crush on Jacob is nothing more than a means to an end, a plot device used to further the relationship of an MC/Merula pairing for the players who want that.  Come on, you really think they’re going to make Merula and Jacob end-game? He’s like, six years older than her and they’ve held maybe one conversation. Jam City has made their mistakes in the past, but I think they’re smarter than that.
But what happens if you canonize a crush on Merula, after doing the same thing for Penny?
Probably nothing, right? Guess again. Players thought nothing of it when they asked different characters out for the First Date TLSQ than they did for the Celestial Ball. The character that the Player leaves behind feels jealous and hurt. (Unless you picked Ismelda, Ben, or Rowan. For whatever reason, Jam City seems to have withdrawn them as potential love-interests and ret-conned the Celestial Ball into being a “just-friends” type of date for those three characters. I’m sure the shippers are so grateful for that, JC...) My point being that they’ve surprised us in the past with this sort of thing. I fully expect Penny and Jacob’s Sibling to revisit the conversation they had in fifth year, for Players who chose to fancy her. And for Players who have since chosen to fancy Merula, don’t be surprised if there are consequences for it.
What I’m saying is, there’s going to be a love triangle.
Maybe it will be relegated to a side-quest, but I doubt it. I’m expecting both Penny and Merula to admit feelings for Jacob’s Sibling, and in-story, the Player will have the opportunity to choose between them. Or choose neither. For players who prefer other characters, or would rather have their MC remain single, they’ll need to have that option as well. Expect Penny, Merula, or both of them to call you out if you admitted feelings on both occasions the game let you.
It just makes sense. Jam City has been giving special attention to Merula and Penny from the beginning, and portraying them as foils of each other, similar to how Rowan and Ben foil each other. But if all of this isn’t proof enough for you, then I refer you to the time Jam City uploaded the image below, with the caption “If you could only choose one...”

As the World Burns - Part 2
Story: Blood Bound
Pairing: MC (Amy) x Adrian x Jax x Dracula x ? (it’s basically a clown car up in here, y’all!)
Warnings: Language, violence, sexual innuendo/discussions
Word Count: 1272
Find Part 1 Here
A/N: When I stumbled on the theory about MC being pregnant as the reason for the “darkness within” line from yesterday’s chapter of BloodBound (Book 2, chapter 14), I had to write something super dramatic and funny (read: ridiculous) because what’s life without a little whimsy? Haha :)  This series is going to be 3-4 parts (maybe 5...).  Enjoy!

That night, Amy laid in bed waiting for Adrian to get home from another night of hunting with Jax. She wasn’t sure if she should tell them together or separately about the baby. She knew she needed to tell them right away because she had so many questions and she doubted she could talk to a normal doctor about anything going on with her. Once Dr. Brite had given her the news, she had really taken a look at herself in the mirror and realized that she already had a small but defined bump.
No, she couldn’t keep this to herself for any length of time. Who knew that kind of fresh hell would come from that? She didn’t want to find out. She couldn’t even think about what Serafine had told her without practically having a panic attack. What even is this thing inside of me? What if it’s the literal spawn of Satan and I’m about to unleash some sort of hellscape on the world?
She also had no idea when her last period was supposed to be considering she’d been taking the shot continuously to not get her periods. Being around vampires all the time and bleeding once a month had led to some kinky shit once and she had no intention of experiencing that again. Adrian had given new meaning to the term ‘getting your red wings’. Not only that, but it was incredibly embarrassing to walk into a conference room full of vampires and see them all sniffing the air. No thanks.
Her birth control had failed her at some point. Either that or one of the vamps she’d been with had super sperm. She wouldn’t put it past any of them. Any of them. When had she turned into such a sex fanatic? She had always liked sex, but since she’d discovered the world of vampires she’d been on a whole new level. She loved Adrian and Jax both, but when a hot vampire crossed her path she couldn’t seem to say no. She felt it was important to experience as much of life as she could and if that meant banging Dracula on his ceiling that was just what she was going to do. What she had done. It wasn’t nearly as great as she’d expected but it was definitely an experience.
She was lucky that neither Adrian or Jax seemed to be possessive of her, especially not with each other. They all seemed to understand each other, the two men actually finding sexual pleasure with each other from time to time, too. They existed in their own love triangle only without the drama. It just seemed to work.
Amy wondered if all that would change now that there would be a baby involved. What if it was Jax’s? How would Adrian feel? Ugh, and would he want her to have his baby next? She was not about to become some weird twisted vamp baby making machine. No fucking way.
What if it was Adrian’s? She knew he lost his only son once and he’d probably be pretty excited about the idea. Well, the timing’s not great, what with the potential end of the world stuff happening right now, she thought. Still, she couldn’t help but picture Adrian as being the best one of the bunch as far as dad material goes. Drac would fall to the bottom of that list. He’d be the worst father known to man. She dreaded the fact she’d have to get in contact with him and get some DNA to figure out who the father was. She was going to have to depend on the two men in her life to pressure Drac into it because she knew he’d never listen to her. Unless I had something he couldn’t refuse…
***
Amy groaned and rolled over in bed, the sound of the softly closing door had woken her up. She must have fallen asleep while waiting for Adrian to come home. She’d texted him asking him to bring Jax with him. She’d come to the conclusion that this conversation was going to be awkward AF and she’d rather just have it once.
“Adrian?” she called out.
She heard footsteps approaching the bedroom before he popped his head in the door. “Hey,” he smiled. “Were you sleeping?”
She sighed. “I was, for the first time in forever I was actually getting decent sleep.” She knew she sounded bitchy but she really didn’t give a shit. She hadn’t been able to eat, sleep, or have sex in almost a week. She was frustrated and cranky and she felt justified in that moment taking it out on anyone in her general vicinity. He just laughed as he stepped into the room, Jax on his heels.
“Hey, Amy,” Jax said with the crooked smile that made his eyes crinkle and her insides turn to mush. Ugh, it had been way too long since she’d gotten laid. She felt her mouth actually water at the sight of the two of them in her and Adrian’s bedroom. She swallowed and sat up, trying to regain her composure. She squeezed her thighs together, creating friction where she suddenly felt like she needed it most. It wasn’t working.
Adrian raised his eyebrow at her, a grin spreading across his face. He could read her like a book, always knowing what she needed before she needed it. “Is this why you asked Jax to come back with me?” he asked.
Jax’s low chuckle was like a match to gasoline within her and she growled, actually growled, like a goddamn animal. “Ugh, no! Just shut up and come sit down. I have something to tell you and it’s important. Stop riling me up, you know I won’t be able to say no and I need to talk to the both of you,” she said, adding, “But don’t go anywhere after I’m done. We’ll see how you both feel, but I know I’ll be down for a serious vamp deep d-”
“Okaaaay,” Adrian cut her off, laughing. “We get it. What did you want to talk to us about, Amy?”
She motioned for them to sit on the bed with her, taking one of their hands in each of hers. Her eyes moved from one face to another and back again as she wondered how the hell she was going to tell them this. It’s not everyday you have to tell your vampire lovers you’re pregnant and you don’t know who’s baby it could be. She had never felt more disgusted and proud of herself at the same time as she did in this moment.  Like one of those girls on trashy daytime reality TV, she thought. Amy had never considered she might be in their same situation but here she was, only hers was worse. She not only had no idea who the father of her baby was but it was definitely a vampire. Yep, this takes the cake for weirdest situation ever.
“C’mon, Amy. Just spit it out already,” Jax said. “Let’s get to the fun stuff.” He winked at her, smiling.
“You asked for it,” she said before blowing out a breath. They both looked at her expectantly.
“Jax, Adrian… I’m-”
At that moment, Adrian’s cell phone rang in his pocket. He let go of her hand to pull it out, frowning at the screen before silencing the call.
“Who calls people anymore?” she asked, throwing her hands up and rolling her eyes. “May I continue?” she asked.
Adrian nodded. She took a deep breath, grabbing both of their hands again, their eyes on her.
“Guys… I’m pregnant.”

Chapter 3
Tumblr media
“Do I look okay?” Riley asked Drake hesitantly as she looked herself over in the mirror.  “It’s the nicest dress I have,” she shrugged.  “I was going to wear it to the wedding . . . but then the garden party came up,” she explained.
“You look beautiful,” Drake murmured, kissing her neck softly.  “Sorry again . . . about last night,” he said softly.  “Shouldn’t have gotten so mad at you.  I know it wasn’t your fault.  Maxwell can be a persistent pain in the ass,” he cringed.
“I’m sorry, too.  Coming back here has me on edge.  Apparently it has you on edge, too,” she added.
“Yeah, well . . . memories and all that,” he muttered.  “But it’s my problem, not yours, and I shouldn’t have been such an ass,” he admitted.  “I know this is just as hard for you as it is for me,” he shot her a half-smile.
“But at least we’re together, and you know what, this week will go by fast then we’ll be back in New York . . . and no more awkwardness,” she smiled.
“Right.” He said confidently.
They took the town car that Maxwell had sent over much to Drake’s disapproval.  He didn’t want to be treated any different while they were in Cordonia.  He would have preferred they take a cab or even rent a car for themselves.  He didn’t like the idea of having to owe somebody for their generosity, but Riley reminded him that it was Maxwell . . . and if they fought it, Maxwell would only fight back harder and get quite offended if they continued to decline his offer.  She had convinced him that it would be much easier to just smile and say thank you.
When the car had arrived, they were a bit surprised to find that it was completely empty.  Maxwell was nowhere in sight.  The driver explained that there was a second town car scheduled to take Maxwell to pick up his date before heading to the venue for the garden party.  That tiny tidbit of information blew Riley’s mind.  His date?  Maxwell?  Drake was equally surprised at the revelation.  They didn’t know Maxwell was seeing anyone, and he never indicated as such in any of their conversations.
As Riley and Drake animatedly discussed the possibilities of Maxwell’s secret date, Drake began to point out various sites that Riley hadn’t been exposed to during her previous visit to Cordonia.  Despite spending so much time in Cordonia, she never really had the opportunity to explore it beyond the court functions and what little places they were able to sneak out to.  She enjoyed being able to see a different side of Cordonia through Drake’s eyes.  It felt incredibly special, and it allowed her to see a different side of him as well.  In New York, he was Mr. Tough Guy who played it cool when it came to his emotions. Back in Cordonia, he seemed softer, and a lot more open.  She liked this side of him, and she also liked the fact that he talked about his family a whole lot more while being here.  She often felt like she had to beat any sort of information about his past out of him before he would give her the tiniest detail.  When they passed a beautiful park shortly after they left the hotel, he talked about the many picnics he and his family shared there before his father passed away.  He remembered feeding the ducks that lived in the pond, and chasing Savannah all around while they played tag.  He pointed out the tree he fell out of when he was ten years old and ended up breaking his arm.  All of these stories were a part of a Drake she had only small glimpses of.  She enjoyed seeing a bit of the bigger picture.  Although she had doubts about coming back, spending time with Drake in the place where he grew up, had been worth it.
Before they knew it, the town car was pulling up to a large estate that Riley swore was much larger and grander than the Cordonian palace.  The building itself had to be at least half an acre in size.  The party was hosted by some fancy Duke whose name Riley couldn’t remember for the life of her.  Maxwell told her that she had met him once on the early stages of the engagement tour, but she really couldn’t recall.  Everything back then was still a blur in Riley’s memory.  It didn’t matter that she didn’t remember him, it wasn’t as if she’d be meeting him at this thing.  She and Drake were commoners, and although they were invited to the party because they were attending the royal wedding, they weren’t significant in any way, shape or form.  It was a courtesy invitation.  They were nobodies.  No title, no courtly connection.  They’d easily fall into the crowd and blend in.
“Well, some things never change,” Drake muttered as the town car pulled into the driveway of the massive estate.  Various pops of various colorful flowers greeted them from the entrance.  “Still a bunch of hoity toity nobles running around trying to compete with one another,” he sighed.
“That’s a whole lot of flowers,” she murmured, taking in the vibrancy and aromas around her.  “Seems like such a waste when they’ll all just die in a few days,” she said sadly as she looked around.
“You sure you don’t want to just ditch this and head out to a bar somewhere?  I can ask this driver to take us right back to the city,” he suggested.
“Drake,” Riley shook her head stepping away from the town car.
“Come on, Lawson.  We can play that ‘I Never’ game you like so much . . . maybe turn it a bit dirty,” he murmured into her ear, gently nipping her earlobe.
“No,” she said firmly.  “As enticing as that sounds, Maxwell is expecting us.  Aren’t you the least bit curious about who his date is?” Riley asked, a bit too eagerly.
“Well . . . yeah, but once we meet the girl, we can bail, right?” He asked hopefully.
“I don’t think that’s how this is going to work,” she chuckled.  “But how about this?  When things get a bit boring, we can leave early.  It’s not like we’ll be missed,” she elbowed him playfully.
“You’re no fun,” he sighed, wrapping his hand in hers as they walked through the entranceway.
It had been some time since Riley had been to a court function, and it was as grand as she remembered.  The fancy clothes, the exotic cuisine, the glamorous people.  She found it all to be a bit overwhelming.  When she had first come to Cordonia, it had all been very new and exciting.  She enjoyed getting dressed up and styled for the various balls, but after a while, she couldn’t help but feel like some prissy Barbie, getting done up to make the members of court happy.  She started to feel like she wasn’t herself anymore.  The party today reminded her of why she didn’t want to be a part of this sort of lifestyle . . . it was all so empty.
Drake pulled her along, leading her out toward the appetizer table.  “Might as well get some free food out of this shindig,” he chuckled.
She smiled, as she allowed him to pull her along.  Just as they reached the table, loud music started to play in the background, and the party seemed to come to a complete halt.  Everyone’s conversations began to taper down, and all eyes turned to the front of the estate.  It’s as if they were waiting for something.
“What’s going on?” Riley asked, covering her ears.  “And why is that music so annoyingly loud?” She cringed, trying to figure out what the heck was happening.
“Oh,” Drake sighed.  “Liam’s here,” he explained.  “They make his arrival a big thing at these sorts of things,” he sighed.  “Like I said . . . everything is so over the top.  These sorts of things never change.”
“Oh,” Riley murmured.  She instantly became a bit self-conscious.  She had expected that Liam would be here.  It was a celebration in his honor after all.  She just hadn’t expected to feel so uncomfortable about it.  Of course, she had expected to be a little sad and maybe a bit anxious . . . but the unsettled feeling deep in her stomach made her want to throw up.  “I don’t see them,” she whispered to Drake.
Drake motioned to the entrance of the estate where they had just walked in moments ago.  When they had arrived, the area had been bustling with activity.  They barely could get through without losing one another, the area had been so crowded, but this time, the area was a lot more open.  It was as if the way had been cleared for Liam to make his grand entrance.
“Announcing, His Majesty, King Liam Rys of Cordonia and his betrothed, Duchess Katherine Sheffield of Valtoria,” a loud voice boomed on the speaker system.  The noised echoed all around them.
Riley sucked her breath in.  If she was going to blend in and get lost in the crowd, now would be the time to do so.  She couldn’t risk running into the happy couple . . . that would only make things far more uncomfortable than she already was.  Avoidance, that’s what would get her through the party.  Blend in and avoid.  That’s all she had to do.  But then . . . they walked through the entryway and she felt as if she were about to fall over.  She held Drake’s hand a bit tighter, forcing herself to stay steady on her feet.  He looked exactly the same, and as much as she tried, she just couldn’t stop her heart from swooning.  She had promised herself that she wouldn’t do this, but she just couldn’t help herself.  He was just as handsome as she remembered, but he did look a tad bit fitter than when she last saw him.  Of course, because he wasn’t already desirable, he had to get a fitter body to make himself more attractive.  Her eyes shifted to the woman next to him, who held his hand so proudly and wore a beautiful smile on her face.  She was gorgeous, of course.  Riley had expected that, but there was also an air of elegance and regality about her that Riley couldn’t help but feel a bit jealous of.  As much as she tried to ward the feelings off, she couldn’t shake it off.  Liam’s eyes met his future wife’s in pure adoration, and Riley’s heart ached a bit . . . even though she knew it shouldn’t.  She tried to force the memories that were starting to stir up away.  She couldn’t rehash those feelings.  She didn’t love him that way anymore.  Those days were long gone.  She had Drake, and they were in love; they had built a life together.  Liam was the past . . . Drake was her present.
“Are you nervous?” Drake asked, rubbing his thumb over the hand that was gripping his fingers ever so tightly.
“A little,” she fibbed.  She was more than nervous, she was a basket case.  She felt like the butterflies in her stomach were going to burst through at any given moment.
“Well, Lady Riley Lawson . . . I haven’t seen you in ages,” a female voice murmured from behind Riley.  She turned around, and her green eyes met the beautiful brown eyes of Hana Lee.
“Hana!” Riley exclaimed, engulfing her friend in a crushing hug.  She hadn’t expected to see her.  She had meant to reach out to her and let her know they’d be attending the wedding, but in all the rush and chaos of making the arrangements and getting packed, it had completely slipped her mind.
“Hello Drake,” she waved politely, and he nodded his head in response.
“It’s so good to see you, Hana,” she exclaimed, still holding on to her tightly.  She’d missed Hana so very much while in New York.  She had girlfriends there, but none that compared to Hana.  They had grown quite close during the social season and subsequent engagement tour . . . she had confided in Hana about everything.  Even her feelings about Liam and how she wasn’t sure she wanted to be queen.  Hana had stayed steadfast by her side, reassuring her every step of the way.  Even when things had gone so terribly off course, Hana stood by her every step of the way, even when she had decided to stay in New York.
“Well, I’m going to give you two a moment to catch up,” Drake smiled.  “I’m going to go find the bar . . . it’s never too early for whiskey,” he reasoned.  “Especially at this sort of event,” he motioned around him, as he headed straight toward the bar.
“I didn’t expect to see you here,” Hana explained.  “I knew you both were coming for the wedding, but I figured you’d skip all of the events leading up to it,” she explained.
“We were thinking about it,” Riley admitted.  “But Maxwell can be ever so persuasive,” she smiled.  “I’m glad he convinced us to come, because now we get to catch up,” she exclaimed excitedly.
“Oh yes, that’ll be fantastic,” Hana agreed.  “Come on, let’s go find Maxwell.  He was supposed to bring me a mimosa, but I’m sure he must have found some sort of distraction to keep him away,” she mused.
“You’re Maxwell’s date?” Riley asked, piecing the information in front of her together.  “Like as in a date-date, or just friends date?”
“Oh . . .” she blushed, clearly caught off guard by Riley’s question.
“Little Blossom!  Sugar Fairy!” a booming male voice called out to them at a distance.
Riley was momentarily distracted by Maxwell.  “Sugar Plum?” Riley asked, arching an eyebrow, but Hana merely looked away in embarrassment.  Clearly, a lot had changed since she was last in Cordonia – including the dynamic between her two very best friends.
“I’ve been looking for you all over,” he said, taking Hana by the hand.  “Riley, I’m so glad you made it.  The town car was acceptable, I presume?”
“Yes of course, Maxwell.  Really, it’s too much,” she waved him off.  “We really could have just taken a cab,” she reasoned.
“Nonsense,” he shook his head.  “My Little Blossom deserves the best,” he smiled brightly.  “Where’s Drake, by the way?  Did he manage to escape already?”
“Oh, he’s just off at the bar,” Riley shrugged.  “You know how much he loves his whiskey,” she joked.
Maxwell’s face dropped.  “Darn . . . I knew I forgot something.  I didn’t get our drinks,” he murmured.  “I was too busy looking at the ice sculpture next to the appetizers.  I’ll be back,” he assured the women.  “Riley . . . do you want a mimosa, too?”
“That’ll be great, thanks, Maxwell,” she nodded.
After Maxwell had left to get their beverages, Riley decided that it was time to get the low down on what was going on between her two friends.  “So, you and Maxwell, huh?” Riley elbowed Hana in the arm, causing her to blush an even deeper red than she already was.  “I don’t recall getting an email talking about that tiny bit of information,” she smirked.
“It’s still very new, and still very casual,” she said vaguely.  “No talks of exclusivity have been made yet,” she said quietly, but Riley noticed a small smile peaking through her calm demeanor.  “My father is thrilled though, which kills me a bit.  If I weren’t so happy about this, I’d call the whole thing off, just to spite him,” she sighed.  “But Maxwell makes me so very happy, and I hope in time it leads to an exclusive relationship,” she admitted.
“I’m happy for you,” Riley grabbed her hand squeezing it tightly.  “You deserve to be happy, and Maxwell is quite a catch,” she assured her.
“He is, isn’t he?” Her eyes searched the garden for him, she found him in line at the bar, chatting wildly with another noble.  Riley could see the admiration in her eyes.
“He’ll make a great husband one day,” she murmured to Hana, and she nodded in agreement.
“Maxwell tells me that you and Drake are together,” Hana says quietly.  “I’m not sure if it’s common knowledge – “
“We don’t really do the whole titles thing,” she blushed.  “We’re exclusive . . . live together, spend all of our time together,” she shrugged.  “I guess he’s my person?” She said uncertainly.  “I just never really expected to be so content,” she explained.
“Just content?” Hana questioned.
The way she asked the question gave Riley a bit of pause, as if she didn’t think the match was something that would last.  Riley didn’t know why she used the word content.  It just sort of fell out of her mouth.  But thinking about it now, it seemed like such a bland word to use to describe her relationship.  Of course she was happy; exceedingly so.  They had a great time together, and he made her laugh every single day.  What more could she ask for in a relationship?
“Well, I mean, of course he makes me so happy . . . it’s just nice to have something be so easy and carefree, you know?  Not have to worry about etiquette and rules,” she motioned around her.
“I never would have thought the two of you would be together,” Hana mused.
“You and me both,” Riley chuckled.  “I don’t know, it just works, you know?” She laughed.  “I guess that’s why I said content,” she smiled.  “Trust me, the moment, I realized I had fallen for him, I spent about five hours trying to talk myself out of it,” she laughed.
Hana’s eyes shifted behind Riley, darting back between what she was looking at behind her and Riley.  “What?” Riley asked, looking behind her.  She saw Liam and Katherine making their rounds, greeting the different guests at the party, and her face fell a bit.  She should have been happy for him.  He had found his Queen.  That’s all he had ever wanted . . . someone to love him with the same love he had felt as well.  Riley thought she’d be able to give him that . . . but the weight of the Cordonian monarchy weighed too heavily on her mind.
“She’s truly beautiful,” Riley murmured to Hana as she continued to watch them walk around.
“Isn’t she though?” Hana agreed.
“And absolutely perfect in every way,” Maxwell sighed from beside them, their drinks in hand.  “Really.  She has Hana beat on that front.  She’s literally Regina’s dream come true,” he explained, handing their drinks over to them.
Hana shook her head at Maxwell’s candor, accepting the drink from him.  The woman was used to his off the cuff remarks by now.  Riley, on the other hand, felt a bit slighted by his remark.  She remembered how many hoops she had jumped through desperate to gain Regina’s approval so that she could marry Liam . . . for what?  Only to have their attempt at a relationship thwarted time and time again.  The pomp and circumstance of court became exhausting after a while.  Riley couldn’t imagine spending the rest of her life in that circus.  Katherine, apparently, had no problems fitting in.  She watched as she easily joked with the various nobles and chattered away effortlessly.  Riley had always felt so uncomfortable at these things.  She always felt like she was screwing up left and right.  Katherine was handling herself perfectly; far better than Riley ever had.  She didn’t seem to need to jump through all of the hoops that Riley had needed to back then.  She had won the man Riley thought she’d spend the rest of her life with by simply being her graceful self.
“Riley?”
“Hmm?” She asked, taking a sip from her mimosa, still a bit lost in her thoughts.
“I asked where Drake ran off to?  I didn’t see him at the bar.” Maxwell said.  “I haven’t seen him anywhere for that matter,” he said quietly.
“I’m not quite sure,” she frowned.  Drake had only mentioned going to the bar.  It wasn’t like he had many friends at court except Liam and Maxwell, and both were currently occupied.  Maybe he needed to get away for a bit away from all of the nobles.  “If you guys will excuse me, I’m going to try and find him,” she smiled.  “I hope he didn’t run off without me,” she chuckled.
She decided to head out to the back of the gardens.  If he needed some time away from all the hoopla, he’d go where no nobles were in sight.  Not seeing him, she decided to try his cell phone.  She heard a faint echo of his ringtone for her, and she figured he must be close.  She wandered off into the distance, but the call was cut short, and she was sent instantly to voicemail.  She found that to be rather odd.  Maybe the call had gotten dropped, or he had accidently swiped his phone off?  Huh.  Why on earth would he go this far behind the estate?
She walked a bit further toward the back of the estate, when she heard angry voices chattering back and forth.  She turned to walk away, but she heard one that sounded distinctly like Drake’s.  Who was he arguing with?  She listened a bit closer, and she realized he was arguing with a woman.  She didn’t want them to see her looking in on them, so she carefully stepped around the corner of the building and leaned in slightly.  The woman had fiery red hair.  It was Olivia.  Her heart sank to her stomach.  He had snuck off to see Olivia . . . so much for him having a difficult time dealing with her.  She sighed, wondering if she should interrupt them.  She decided against it when she saw how angry Drake seemed.  As she got a closer glimpse of Olivia, she noticed that her face had tears streaming down her face.  What were the arguing about?  It was obviously something serious.  His hands were flailing all about and Olivia continued to cry in front of him.  Riley felt a pang of guilt.  It felt wrong for her to be spying on them.  After all, they had once shared a life together, too.  Maybe they needed some sort of closure?  Drake rarely talked about their breakup, and she never saw it as her place to ask about it.  Maybe after all this time, they just need to get out all of their anger and sadness so that they can be civil one another.  They were going to be here for the next week, and she was certain they’d be running into her at least on another occasion.
Then, in an instant, Drake was wrapping Olivia up into is arms, and cradling her as she continued to cry.  He placed a soft kiss on the top of her head.  Riley bit back her own cry that threatened to escape her lips.  What was happening?  She couldn’t have seen what she had just seen, right?  She and Drake . . .they were together . . . they were happily in love.  They lived together.  They shared their lives together in every way imaginable.  She came here for him.  Against her better judgment and all her doubts, she had gotten on that plane and came back to the country she never wanted to see again.  But had he come here for Olivia?  She remembered him being so enthusiastic to attend the wedding, even when her own doubts were screaming that they should just stay home and send a message of congratulations.  Yet, here she was, having her heart broken a second time in this stupid country as she watched the man she shared her life with cradling his ex-girlfriend in the same arms that he cradled her in.  She felt like she was going to be sick.  She watched as their entire relationship crumbled in front of her eyes.
Riley needed to get out of there.  She couldn’t bear to see any more of it.  She started to rush, as quickly as her wedged heels would allow her to.  She couldn’t deal with this now.  If she did, she’d yell and scream and make a whole big scene.  She needed to get back to her hotel, and figure out what she was going to do.  Was she going to confront him?  Was she going to leave?  Go back to New York?  She felt like flying home, packing all of her belongings and just leaving him.  If Olivia wanted him, and he wanted her, then she could have him.  She wasn’t going to be somebody’s option . . . she couldn’t bear to go through another devastating relationship.  Her heart had been broken by Liam, and Drake helped her pick up the pieces . . . now he was the one smashing her heart to pieces.
She suddenly couldn’t breathe.  She wasn’t paying attention to where she was going, she was bumping into nobles left and right, until she finally ran smack dab into someone’s firm chest right as she was about to exit the estate.
“I-I’m sorry,” she mumbled, trying to hold the tears back that kept threatening to fall.  She needed to be strong.  She couldn’t cry here.  Not in front of all these people.   She started to pull away, and continue her quickened pace to get out of there, when a firm arm pulled her around.
“Riley?” The deep voice questioned.
She looked up at the man she had bumped into, and was a bit taken a back to see who was standing before her.  “Liam,” she whispered.
This was all too much for her, the tears she had been so careful to keep inside of her, flowed freely, pouring down her cheeks until she crumbled to the ground.  All she remembered before passing out was being engulfed in a warm embrace, and carried back into the estate by Liam’s strong arms.

[NEW SERIES] “The Trio” (character introductions)
Featuring: SF9 Rowoon, NCT’s Jaehyun, OC (Ryu Hyejin), & other guest idols
Summary: Jin-Ji-Do’s era has ended and a new one has begun, and SBS is in need of new MCs for Inkigayo.  This year, (you), Rowoon from SF9, and Jaehyun from NCT are chosen as the newest MCs for the program.  Everyone is extremely excited for the new trio and can’t wait to see their chemistry!  But little did they know, it was the beginning of the newest secret love triangle...
(GIF SLIGHTLY IRRELEVANT BUT STILL REALLY RELEVANT)
Tumblr media
Ryu Hyejin
After trending on NAVER because of the first broadcasting of the new drama she was co-staring in, this rookie actress got booked with love calls for all sorts of programs.  Her looks were average to put it simply, but she had a uniqueness to her that got people interested with just one picture.  And her acting was no joke, despite being a rookie, she executed her role and added a whole new dimension to the character.  With her newfound, and hopefully lasting, fame she gets an offer from SBS to be one of the new MCs for Inkigayo.  Of course, without a doubt she accepted, as one of the best ways for an actor/actress to gain popularity was to be a host for one of the big three shows.  Gaining the support of k-pop fans from around the world was definitely a perk that came with the job, and she wasn’t going to pass up such an amazing opportunity.
Kim Rowoon
SBS has had their eyes on this boy for a while, let me tell you that.  With his rising popularity through Lipstick Prince, his acting career, and his latest appearance on Law of the Jungle, he’s proven himself to be quite desirable.  Standing at a whooping 189 cm, this toll giant is not only witty, but uses his charms and says or does just the right things to capture the listeners ears and eyes.  Also with hopes that he would become the “male Seolhyun” FNC was eager to get him more gigs.  So when the opportunity came, and SBS swooped in and sent FNC the offer, there was no way he was going to pass up such an opportunity.  Especially with SF9′s comeback right around the corner, he was determined to introduce his group to the world.
Jung Jaehyun
He was the last addition to the new lineup of MCs.  With the rising popularity of NCT, and after showing his hosting talents through vLive and his and Johnny’s radio show, NCT’s Night Night, this idol has been gaining interest due to his charming and unique personality.  During his audition, he totally went overboard with the practice script, but the PD’s loved it and moved him to the top of the list of possible MCs.  He also had previous music show hosting experience with Doyoung on MCountdown during the SMROOKIES era.  With Doyoung as his Inkigayo predecessor, Mark hosting on Music Core, NCT’s comebacks, etc.  It is NCT’s year to take over the charts, and with that there are high expectations.  Most of the other possible MCs that were on the list didn’t have the unique shy-but-rude-at-the-same-time charms that he had, so without much debate, he became the last new MC!
HELLO everyone, I’ve been gone for like a week, I still have midterms and I’m dying with all of this work since I’m getting ready to move soon *hints at possible hiatus in the near future, but hopefully that won’t be the case......*  BUT ANYWAYS.  Since the new round of MCs were announced a couple weeks ago or something, I got the idea, and I couldn’t stop myself from writing this.  We’ll see how far this actually goes, it could be like a two shot or like a thirty shot, we won’t know until it happens LOL.... But I hope that y’all will look forward to it!  I don’t know if y’all can tell, but Rowoon and Jaehyun are two of my top baises and it’s a problem because slowly but surely all of my scenarios in my drafts section are turning in to their scenarios.... :’(  But yeah!  Please look forward to this new mini-maybe-not-mini series!!

Note
you mentioned you could write a dissertation on how you would do oph differently and i mean same like we all could, like u said ... the power of an oph tv show written by some people on here would be INSANE
anyways my point was i recall you mentioning your whole raf/mc/ethan love triangle back in bk2 it sounded really cool but i only caught snippets of it, if u want to can you explain a bit more abt it? or other oph things that should have been done differently?
omg so this will reveal how literally insane and deranged i am however. i have thought this through so thoroughly and if anyone from netflix is reading this give me my tv show deal now
ANYWAYS ok so specifically regarding the love triangle here is what i imagine w a rough timeline
book 1 ch 1-3: mc meets ethan and thinks he is a conceited arrogant ass and is upset that her mentor and medical inspiration is such a jackass. meets raf and is instantly charmed and crushes on him from the get go
book 1 ch 4-8: starts dating raf and they get on very well for first few chapters. but during this time mc and ethan start getting closer and becoming friends and developing feelings (mc not really aware of this but ethan is). other hospital staff notice ethan and mc getting closer and one time raf overhears other paramedics gossiping one about how e&mc act around each other/talk about each other and raf gets worried. mc kind of gushes to raf one time about how much she likes ethan now that she has gotten to know the real him not knowing that hospital staff are gossiping abt their relationship and raf is having doubts
book 1 ch 9: ok so in my fake reality there isnt the huge time jump at the end of this ch 9 and there would be a lot more storylines in that time that was skimmed over and so somewhere in that time a few weeks before the miami chapter raf realises before amanda does that she has feelings for ethan and so he lets her go so that he doesnt stop her from being happy. this is hard for her obviously bc she genuinely does have feelings for raf but she cant refute anything raf is saying about how she feels for ethan so they are both left heartbroken
book 1 ch 10-14: events of miami happen then ethan pushes her away and mc tries to get him to cave but then he fucks off and quits and she doesnt hear from him for a while so doesnt know what to think. but THEN ch 14 happens where raf gets seriously injured and mc freaks out and when he wakes up she admits she still has feelings for him and kisses him but they have a heart to heart after and he realises she's not all the way in so back to square 1
book 1 ch 15-17: mc and ethan get back together and it ends as written
book 2 ch 1-6: mc expected herself and ethan to split when they got their jobs back at edenbrook but she did not expect that mf to take off without a trace and find out from a nurse that he had fucked off to the amazon for 2 months without saying as much as a goodbye so mc in the book deals with it very calmly but in my version mc is MAD and she stays mad at him for awhile and is also a little crushed when she sees raf w sora. but he gently reminds her that she doesnt really have a right to be jealous considering what happened. e&mcs relationship fluctuates where they switch back and forth from being on better terms to fighting (sometimes abt work sometimes abt other things) but her friendship with raf gets on track easily and smoothly all things considered
book 2 ch 7-10: e&mc are back on the mend and together in some sort of capacity. raf and mc are good friends
book 2 ch 11: OK SO major point in the lt. when the attack happens and mc and raf think theyll d1e it shakes mc to the core and ethan can see how worried she is about raf and is almost jealous in the sense that raf is there to comfort her and he saved her while ethan did literally nothing lmfao. even though e&mc have that sweet moment in the ch 11 diamond scene mc still overhears that raf still has feelings for her during the breakup w sora
book 2 ch 12-13: mc and ethan decide to start secretly dating BUT mc and raf have gotten so close after the attack and mc chooses to confide in and get her support re: the attack from raf and shuts ethan out a lot which causes some fighting ! which leads to e&mc hashing it out and ethan revealing that he can tell amanda still has feelings for raf in some capacity which she has nothing to say to bc it's true lol
book 2 ch 14-20: e&mc makeup after their wwe match. raf and mc agree to take a step back from each other and still be friends but from more of a distance
book 3: so for me at this point the lt is over and mc doesnt have romantic feelings for raf anymore but they are close friends and although they do not discuss anything romantic they support each other in lots of other ways especially at work
