I am a huge stickler for balance in video games. I sometimes see people say stuff "if you balance it too much it'll be bland!" and I wonder if we mean the same thing when we say "balance". What I mean is this:

Say you're playing some Final Fantasy game or something, with various party members to choose from. You look at the options for party members and, after weighing each one's strengths and weaknesses, you find that one of them is overall better than the others; their strengths are much stronger and their weaknesses are insignificant. And likewise, one of the characters is overall weaker.

In this scenario, any player who's goal is to win (i.e. the vast majority) will always pick the stronger character, and will never pick the weaker one. And this... just kinda sucks, right? The point of providing options is to let players choose, but if there are options that are overall superior or inferior then it isn't a very interesting choice. Not much of a choice at all when there's a clear correct answer.

And yeah obviously there's exceptions, like an underpowered joke character that's impressive to win with. But those are just that: Exceptions. Usually, underpowered options may as well not exist, and overpowered options make it pointless to pick anything else. But I had a thought today about something that looks like bad balance, but kinda isn't.

Say you're playing some Final Fantasy game or something again, but this time you don't get to pick your party members. You just have a fixed party that you can't modify. Once again, one of the party members is overall stronger than the rest, and another is overall weaker.

This is "unbalanced", but not in the usual way. Usually, you wouldn't use an underpowered character, but that's not an option here; using this character isn't an choice, it's a mandatory part of the game. And normally, a character being overpowered would mean that other characters wouldn't get used, but ALL the characters get used, so that doesn't happen.

At the heart of my hatred for bad balance is how it ruins choices. I want to be able to look over all the options and choose the ones I like best, but when there's a blatantly correct choice, I either have to accept that I don't get to choose, or intentionally handicap myself, both of which feel awful. Balance isn't about making everything equal, it's about making every option a valid choice.

(youve probably talked a lot about nille before but just!! general ideas. maybe silly ideas. anything u wanna share you havent talked about before. etc :])

Ok this is all minor spoilers for my currently unposted Nille fanfic and major spoilers for my currently unwritten post-canon fanfic but I don't care if you don't, let's go.

People usually write Nille as quite overprotective of Bonnie, and I do too, but I also write her as unsure that she's good enough to protect them! So her big reaction to meeting the party is "I failed to keep Bonnie safe, of course I failed, I was always doomed to fail. And these people succeeded!! Who am I next to the Saviors of Vaugarde??"

So she kinda feels like shit, personally. And she has no idea how to act around the party, because there's the way she acts around strangers, and there's the way she acts around people she trusts, and it is understandably bizarre for those circles to overlap. Since she can't be suspicious or friendly, and she's feeling somewhat useless, I think her instinct is to kinda just... fade back..? Which is upsetting to her in itself, which feeds back into the problems. But! Everyone is very determined to connect with her, and "we love the same kid" is a great way to bond, and Nille still has her usual Bambouche support system to help her sort out her feelings, and the party have been working on their communication skills. So they figure it out!

Her exact first impression of Siffrin probably depends a lot on how he's coping at that point post-canon, which isn't something I've decided yet... But it's some sort of strange mix of "I owe you my life" and "Wowww do you need my therapist's number" and "#Relatable /neg /pos". Siffrin meanwhile is anxious as fuck because he's not just meeting the most important person in Bonnie's life, she also has the power to break apart the family he nearly destroyed the world to keep together! So it's a little awkwardly intense on both sides.

Then once they get to know each other better, there's some emotional difficulty in how similar they are; it's hard not to compare what's worse, remembering shitty parents or not remembering any family, being alone or having to take care of a young child. So there's some pity and guilty jealousy on both sides. But also commiseration and understanding! But also they're liable to trigger each other's issues occasionally, what with Siffrin still having a rather poor handle on their own emotions and Nille disrupting the party dynamics. But they don't really hold it against each other; it would be hypocritical, and none of that matters compared to the fact that they've both nearly died for Bonnie. They like to go fishing together, sometimes Nille helps explain things that Siffrin only knows through muscle memory. And Nille does end up passing on some therapy tips!

Nille is a little star-struck by Mirabelle, who is the Chosen Savior of Vaugarde and only a couple years older than her and so heroic and nice and well-adjusted! Mirabelle is on a similar but less extreme wavelength, excited to meet Bonnie's sister who she's heard so intriguingly little about, but who must be so brave and cool! Once they get to know each other more it's kind of a confidence boost for Nille to realize that even Mirabelle has anxiety and imposter syndrome and is just some girl who found herself in the position to do something and she did her best to do it. And Mirabelle thinks Nille is just as cool as she imagined!

They end up taking some small classes together for fun at various Houses while they travel. When Mirabelle figures out that Nille isn't very good at reading, she reads books to her sometimes, and recommends her books that aren't too hard but also aren't too kiddie. One more for the girl's night book club! They have some good convos too about the balance of protecting and caring for a child vs giving them space to grow confident and independent, since Mira's parents were quite stifling; it's easier to find the acceptable middle range when you know what both failure modes look like, instead of just the one horrible extreme.

Isabeau is very friendly, and used to working with strangers and projecting an aura of safety, so he's got the chillest dynamic with Nille to start. He's the one who notices that her easy acceptance of the group was a little too easy and actually has some difficult feelings behind it. And he's been working on being braver, so he consults with his friends and then talks to Nille about it! I think it's a scary conversation but helpful in the long run, it's the start of establishing actual personal trust rather than just assumptions and idealization.

Since that precedent has been set, Isabeau becomes Nille's first choice if she needs to bring something up to the group. Doesn't hurt that he reminds her of one of the first people she met in Bambouche, too! On Isabeau's side, he likes having the opportunity to get to know someone new while he's figuring out his new self. And he's so delighted when she joins the war on puns as a whole new front: dad jokes. She wasn't even particularly into them before, she just wanted to shake up the battlefield. Nille and Isabeau also spar sometimes, because she hates how poorly she did at defending Bonnie, and Isabeau has the most formal/practical training in self-defense to pass on. (And he's the most willing to do physically-demanding activities for fun after already walking all day.)

Nille finds Odile intimidating. She's not sweet like Mira, or exuberant like Isa, or, uh, whatever the fuck Siffrin has going on. She's a full generation older than Nille and hard to read! Scary! But Bonnie adores her, and she's been making an effort to be more reassuring to Siffrin lately which shows, and Isabeau starts being more teasing-rude to Odile (the way she is to him) to prove that he can annoy her without repercussion which is really funny. So it doesn't take all too long for Nille to come down from high alert for the most part! And Odile respects Nille hardcore for raising Bonnie and takes her very seriously, which she appreciates.

Odile takes point on tutoring Bonnie, because she has some formal teaching experience and they're most likely to sit and listen for her anyway, but the others will give lessons on this or that. But Odile soon realizes from the way Nille hovers but doesn't help that she is actually further behind in schooling than Bonnie, and makes it her mission to rectify that. It's kinda rocky at first because Nille is both self-conscious of and resigned to her lack of education, but once she starts getting into it she really gets into it! This brings Odile and Nille a lot closer and Nille ends up admiring her a lot, especially as she catches hints of wild Odile lore.

Loop really likes getting to know Nille, since she never knew pre-loops Siffrin but she's still connected to their family. Not a stranger, not a copy, best of both worlds! Nille also appreciates having another person there who feels out of place in the party dynamics. She thinks Loop is funny, but also worrying, but they have enough people worried about them that she decides to goof off with them and enable them instead. Like yes it's probably bad for their mental health to make this kind of joke but it's worse to have everyone constantly analyzing their jokes' healthiness, yknow? Ironically, this (along with her newcomer status) means that Loop takes her worry more seriously and is more likely to listen to her than anyone else (except maybe Siffrin but only maybe).

Sometimes Loop gets a little too frantically irrational and it freaks Nille out because it reminds her of her and her mom's manic episodes. But she can disengage and tag someone else in, and see from afar that it all turns out okay! Loop gets some therapy tips from her too, but not necessarily the same ones as Siffrin. And they give her super shitty advice in return, in that way where it makes you realize how shitty it is and commit yourself to doing the opposite. They like to do silly things together that Nille never got the chance to do as a child and Loop doesn't remember doing, like rolling around in mud puddles and staying up all night just to watch the sunrise. Nille doesn't feel as self-conscious about acting juvenile because Loop is like a billion years old, but she also doesn't have to be in charge the way she is when playing with Bonnie! And Loop gets to make brand new memories with someone who has no old ones to compare them to!

Bonnie is super happy to see Nille for like, a day, and then they get really mad at her more often than not for like a week (because now that they're home with her it's safe to be distraught and uncooperative), and then they settle back into a more consistent dynamic. But it takes a while longer for them to be able to comfortably get any farther away from each other than maybe a room over; Bonnie confidently heads off and then suddenly comes running back, and Nille is so brave about separating and bravely panics the entire time. Oh well! The first time around it only took her a couple years to get to be okay with Bonnie being away from her, she'll figure it out again eventually!

In an attempt to answer your question, I'll talk about how I think about and approach character studies. It may be that much of what I say fails to be useful to you, but I hope to be of some small aid regardless!

To begin, I think the most fundamental element of writing a character study—as a piece of fanfiction, though much of this can be applied without significant difficulty to orginal works—is to have a firm vision of who the character is to you.

This is separate from having a firm vision of who the character "really" is. Nobody can have that—every way we engage with media is coloured by our own values and perspectives, and that bleeds into the way we think about and write characters. This is sometimes a difficult dichotomy to balance against the principle of "they would not fucking say that", but to borrow some old and too-simplified physics, I think it can be useful to consider that a character is in many ways like an electron in an electron cloud. Their precise and perfect characterisation is not something that we can ever truly locate, but we can identify the area of narrative space it is most likely to be in.

The task of the character study, I feel, is to hammer down on the part of that narrative space that you find most compelling. To take the meat of their character and cook it the way you would want it served to you. A character study is not to please anyone else. A character study—or, at least, the kind of character study I write—exists for you to get your feelings out about the character you have been rotating in your brain onto the page. It also exists, of course, so that you can try to show those feelings to other people and hope they feel them too, but you will never succeed in actually capturing those feelings in the first place if you don't allow yourself to write your authentic vision of the character.

They don't have to be your blorbo, or your problematic fave, or your three corners of the OC design triangle, or whatever, but when you write them, for that space and time they do have to be yours. Otherwise, what's the point?

Once you have that vision, you can put them in practically any situation you like and as long as there's something in it for them to bounce off, you're going to be able to tell a story that reveals something about the character. If you look at the "plots" of a selection of my character studies, we have "one guy folds sheets, another guy asks him questions" as a plot, we have "a pair of exes talk across a tabletop after a party", we have "oh LAWD they FAWKING" like four and a half times, we have "retelling the plot of something else" twice, and we even have "two people on a helicopter flight for an hour". It's not really complicated stuff. It doesn't need to be. The character, or characters, just need to be in a situation where they're going to have some reason to think about, and maybe even talk about, whatever conflict or idea or relationship you find most compelling about them.

With that said, it should be noted that it's... well, for me, with the way I do things, it's very very difficult to conceive of writing a character study in any situation without a clear and central conflict the character or characters are grappling with. All of my character studies revolve around a problem a character has and how they react to it. And yes, "having a conflict" is, like, the quiddity of a story, the most basic plot diagram there is. But what I'm trying to say here is that even in the story I mentioned where two people sit in a helicopter and talk to each other, the story is intensely focused on the internal struggle one of those characters is having with the choices that led to her sitting in that helicopter and how much they do, or don't, make her like the person she's sitting opposite (both more and less than she knows). And that's the sort of thing that I think is key. The conflict, in my eyes, needs to be philosophically central to the way you view the character and what you want to say about them. It needs to be tightly intertwined into what you find most compelling about them—the thing that you just want to sink your hands into and squeeze, for good or ill. That's how you get to really show the world who they are and why you care about that.

After that, I really think that in a lot of ways it just comes down to the prose. How deeply can you write into your character's head? Are you colouring even your description of the world around them with the way they would see it—or are you taking the opposite path and presenting the character entirely through someone else's eyes, so that you can characterise them through the distance between what the other person thinks about them and how they present themselves? You don't need frame-perfect metaphors or the Inanna-Ishtar LGBTQIA+ sharingan-coloured prose to do that, but you do need to focus on writing in a way that expresses the character.

This does take focus. How much focus depends on how specialised you are into that style of prose, but it is focus nonetheless: you need to think of your sentences, each and every one, as tools to communicate something about your understanding of the character that you want the audience to know. Some of them will inevitably instead become vehicles to reach a point where you can communicate that understanding, but something as simple as what a character notices first when they walk into a room tells you something about them. Lean on that. Lean into that. After all, if you're writing a character study, the writing should study your character.

(Colour this advice with the fact that I am, as you've probably realised from reading my writing, very much a prose-focused writer. I have spent near on fifteen years, since before I even graduated high school, honing my prose for poetry of language and interiority so that I can write in the way I most enjoy reading. That affects what I value in writing, and it affects my opinion on the way people should write. I believe what I am saying is true and good and useful, because I have faith in the way I engage with my art, but my advice does not chart the sole and singular course to the ever-distant utopia.)

To tl;dr myself, my advice for writing character studies fundamentally boils down to to the idea that I think a character study is most potent when it presents a vision of a character that the writer has clearly obsessed over. That they have layered with their thoughts, their perspective, and their heart to the degree that it drips even from their prose. A character study with the confidence to say this is what I think is compelling about this character, and I want you to see it too.

I may not agree with it, I may think "They Would Not Have Fucking Said That", I may even think the writer has just invented an unsustainable interpretation of the character that demonstrates startling reading incomprehension and I can't believe I have to share the same fandom as these people.

But at the same time, I know people have thought and said that about my own works—and I'm still happy that I wrote them.

I have far more respect for someone who's written an entirely committed and deranged interpretation of a character that I think is Flatly Fucking Wrong than I do someone who presents me with the most milquetoast interpretation I can't disagree with. If I choose to read a character study, it's because I want to see you study the character. That's, as the meme goes, why I'm here.

So, really: focus on determining who you think the character is, write them the way you want to see them written, keep your prose tight to who you think the character is (not just "would they say that?" or "would they think that?" but "how would they describe that?" and "what would they see in that?"), and commit to the bit.

Nene, who always buys into the appearance, who doesn't really think about what kind of person Teru is, other people see all his sides, but the longer she communicates with him during the movement, it becomes more and more difficult to close her eyes, and Hanako will turn Nene's soul inside out so that what kind of appearance is there for her now, and then at one point Nene looks at Teru not as Minamoto-senpai, but as Teru.

Plus a good opportunity to develop the theme of past relationships, some kind of widowhood and such... I love pictures of each other glue it tightly, but people started doing it on such a scale that I want something new, to let the characters breathe, to present them as people who may not get together, to break up. After all, if Nene survives, then she won't stay with Hanako, it's part of her life, but it's going into the past, and then anything can happen.

From Teru's side, it's something between Akane and Aoi, lol, like a girl who seems to be embarrassed by him, but at the same time can punch whoever she needs, and he looks good in such dynamics.

It's so realistic, how Teru isn't perfect for Nene in reality. Terunene's relationship isn't really open enough to talk about it from Teru's side, but if you want, I think you can find something. He seems to be so patronizing towards her, like she's little one, but her image of a superficial pretty girl is also a kind of mask, and Teru likes to find out the unpleasant sides of people, and for some reason it's even more difficult for him with her than with Akane or Aoi.. he really wants to break them, and when Nene burst into tears at karaoke, he ran to the toilet 😭 how he really treats her, it's not even clear yet

Nene is such a standard girly heroine that you can't get "she's not like everyone else" out of her. No, she is like that, she is like all the girls, she likes the things that girls her age love, she loves handsome boys and gets angry and crying when difficulties fall on her! She is not "not like everyone else" and she does not understand you, a cool senpai and heir of exorcists family.

Nene suddenly gets a prince who is not-so-charming (I liked this expression so much lol), and Teru suddenly chooses a no-name for everyone radish. In fact, both Akane and Aoi are second in popularity after Teru in school, it is not the same as hanging out with a no-name girl.

And I like Nene's superficial judgment of life, she is alive with it, ah Nene doesn't understand Hanako, doesn't understand Aoi, and also the heroine, but that's because she is just a schoolgirl in an average image— She is not a quiet person, she is fashionable, charismatic in her own way, but still simple. And quiet people are a little deviation from the average images too.

The ideal of balance in the middle, which just consists of these imperfections in the right amount. It seems like mature Hanako is funny take, but maybe no? He, as Hanako-san, has already learned how to communicate with people, how to hide, what to say, has studied the material part of solving some situations, and like, although his methods are not wonderful, at least he has them, and Teru really only lived as a weapon, and he knows about social issues with a big stretch. By the way, Hanako reacted with "stay with me until you calm down" to Nene's crying, and it was cute.

Teru, on the other hand, is so realistic. He just ran away when Nene started crying and came back when she felt better. What was that even? But Hanako is 60+ years old, and Teru is only 17 and has no social experience. Understandable.

rewatching gtg as one does when they miss oscar nerding out but i was just thinking about how the format is so bland and they've been doing the same challenges over and over so my question is. if you could come up with a gtg challenge / change the format any way you wanted what would you propose?

HI anon i love this question because i too complain frequently about the redundancy of the gtg format!!! tbf it's fairly easy to film so i can't knock it too much but in a hypothetical fantasy world where we are blessed with unlimited resources and time and the drivers can be put in a room all together then there are several things i'd like to see:

really the problem is that there's no SPECTACLE!!! also part of the problem is simply the editing i think... like if you watch k-variety then you'll see that editing contributes a lot to the watchability regardless of what they're doing lol, but gtg editing is pretty minimal which is understandable but does make it a bit more boring. tbh for giffing purposes i prefer minimal editing but just as an entertainment product it could use more... also the videos need to be like 40+ minutes long i hate how much they cut out from my favs!!!! from a "i want to see oscar" perspective i need them to stop removing half of his answers 🙏

related to point 1, what helps in adding spectacle is raising the STAKES. there are no stakes other than the trophy... this is what happens when you have a simple linear round format. again this is because gtg is filmed in one go and then the points at tallied up and they release the episodes over the course of the season, but in a hypothetical world i wish there were like, a proper tournament!!!! we need gtg PLAYOFF BRACKETS. we need TEAMUPS. like either by team (mclaren vs red bull) or by prowess (for ex if it's a geography game then max and lando team up vs 2 guys who are kind of just in the middle)... tbf with a competition style you remove the ability from some guys to get an answer in which can be disappointing if you're half watching to just Look At Your Guy, but it would imo make it more fun.

i think another problem with gtg is the type of questions they ask sometimes? which i understand because there's only so much you can think of, but part of i think is that they ask kind of basic things that fans have a similar baseline knowledge of (which is still interesting but there's room for more i think!!). like the "drivers being able to identify the track by sound" party trick is something very few fans can do, so that would be fun incorporated into gtg. stuff that's like very much f1-driver-specific trivia that they're more adept at... and then on the reverse side, maybe some stuff that drivers WOULDN'T be expected to be good at that fans would know so there's a balance. or idk maybe they need to do a jeopardy trivia game with varying levels of difficulty

anyway f1 should also do more proper variety to make up for mclaren giving up on 8+ minute challenge videos... so not gtg but i desperately want them to set up like a proper gaming tournament / padel tournament etc. that they film officially and turn into a gtg-style multi-episode Thing !!!!!!!

Part 1 & Part 2

It was a miserable night when they came.

For the first time in months, Lord Donovan had pulled his henchmen and armies back into his own territory to rest and recover their mana reserves. No one actually knew that though, as very few people ever escaped the carnage he was known for. The worst storm in decades had descended on the once flourishing Kingdom of Shiftingtails, now the heart of corruption and where the Dark Fortress had emerged from the very earth.

So imagine with me, the surprise that the dark lord must've felt when he received word that a mysterious stranger had appeared at the gate. He allowed them to enter, if to find out what kind of fool would come to him in this weather. Maybe they could provide some form of meager entertainment?

The person brought before him wasn't anything like he'd been expecting. They were dressed in non-descript clothing, walked with a limp, and had to rely on a staff in order to keep their balance. Their ethnicity wasn't easily discerned and their eyes were white with blindness, yet they showed no difficulty navigating through the fortress. Lord Donovan couldn't even determine if they possessed any significant well of mana or not. Still, he allowed the stranger into his court to hear what they had to say.

His henchmen were present of course. Why should they miss out on the fun? While the dark lord was perfectly capable of defending himself, it was good to have a little extra muscle for appearances sake. And if the stranger did try anything, he wouldn't need to get his hands dirty when his men would all too gladly jump at the chance to draw blood.

The stranger's voice was rough with age and Lord Donovan found himself wondering if they'd gone senile long ago. Still, they weren't afraid to condemn the evil he'd done, the hundreds he'd personally killed, and the countless others he'd scarred for life in more ways than one. He'd heard it all before of course, but what the stranger said next, chilled him to the bone.

"If only Sir Finn could have seen what you've become..."

With a snarl, Lord Donovan nearly leaped to his feet but managed to restrain himself from tearing the stranger apart. His mind was clouded with rage. How dare they carelessly mention that name?!

"WHO ARE YOU?!" the dark lord bellowed, not bothering with his usual faux politeness anymore.

"I am the past and your ilk has no future," the stranger answered.

Lord Donovan became aware of two things in that moment. His henchmen were growing restless; especially Dirk, who had started fiddling with his dagger, but Reven and Maul were also poised to attack if he gave the word. Unfortunately, they would stand no chance if he did because he now knew who the mysterious stranger was.

As soon as the realization occurred to him, the stranger's form seemed to shift beyond his eyes. Their clothing changed to enchanted robes adorned in ancient arcane patterns and their very visage morphed into one he'd never expected to see again. Their eyes remained clouded and their simple staff transformed into an ornately carved stave. Apparently, the Great Seer had survived all these years later and they had chosen to confront him now of all times.

"You are the one with no future. Return to the earth like the kingdom you once served," Lord Donovan growled through gritted teeth.

The Seer let out a heavy sigh and leaned against their stave as they surveyed the dark lord once more. "You have no authority, not anymore. Nature condemns your crimes and demands punishment." They stretched out their hand, pointing right at him before continuing. "May you no longer hide amongst the innocent for they will see you and your thugs as the beasts you are..."

Thinking quickly, Lord Donovan channeled what mana he had into a counterspell, but Reven seemed to have a similar realization and he summoned a skull blaster in an effort to disrupt the Great Seer's curse. He meant well, but the dark lord knew if that blaster fired, none of them would survive thanks to the powerful reflect enchants on the Seer's robes.

He immediately lashed out at his henchmen with his tendrils, not to harm but to get them away from the epicenter. If he was lucky, they would be spared and he would take the brunt of the curse in their stead. Unfortunately, his mind was faster than his his body and before he could follow through, the curse was cast.

The pain was instantaneous and only through sheer force of will, Donovan remained standing, although his henchmen could not. It brought him back to that horrible day all those years ago when the corruption first took hold of his body, only it was worse than even that. He felt his very bones creaking, as if something was trying to tear him apart from the inside and break free. He couldn't stay upright and within seconds, collapsed to the tiled floor.

At some point he became aware of a persistent tapping, like an angry woodpecker drilling through his skull. When he opened his one good eye socket, he realized it was merely the footsteps of the Great Seer as they crossed the floor towards him. Their brows were pinched together in a look that he had swore never to see again: pity. They watched him for a moment before kneeling down in front of him.

"I wish there had been another way," they murmured. "But just as dead branches must be removed from a tree, so must evil be purged before life can return."

Donovan spat at the Seer's feet.

"You have a chance to break the curse. In three years, if you do not receive a token of true love, all of you will remain as beasts."

The Great Seer left the way they had come but this time there was no one to accompany them through the dark halls. The storm raged on throughout the night and into the next day, but in the Dark Fortress, a different turmoil was brewing. One of rage and confusion. One that would cause even greater devastation to the surrounding kingdoms and claim the lives of all who tried to resist it.

As a pokemon fan who doesn't engage too much with the non comp parts of the community I am really starting to wonder if any of these other parts actually like pokemon at this point. Whenever I do see stuff from the more casual fans its the very fair criticism of "we need better stories in these games" which I 100% agree with, but then in the instances where any of these games actually try and imo somewhat succeed at it (Original Sun/Moon, Scarlet Violet vanilla and DLC) I see WAY more outcries about the games "being a slog cause of the all the dialogue" and/or "These games suck on replay cause unskippable cutscenes" And like both of these could be valid criticisms, like yeah add better cutscene skip, for the people that really don't want to engage, but most of the time it seems to be the same people complaining and at this point I have to ask, do they want an actual plot or non at all? Like is there something I am not getting here? And also quite frankly, as much as I like to replay pokemon games myself, they are really not made to be replayed and more made for keeping your savefile around, like I said, yeah cutscene skip is a thing they should maybe look into, but the amount of people I have seen bashing (especially gen7) for "being annoying to replay" is lunacy. Also a semi unrelated thing but another common and weird complaint is people begging for removal/togglebility of the XP share, which is a fair thing in the way of "hey why was this option removed." But thats not the argument I ever fucking see about it, its always barely coherent rants about difficulty and like, its a simple quality of life feature, the actual problem here is that the games are not balanced well around the xp share. The problem ISN'T a basic JRPG quality of life feature to reduce grinding being added. imo the casual pokemon fandom just doesen't know what it wants exactly or barely comprehends the points they are even making at this point. There are a metric shitton of valid criticisms of the mainline games and I see them getting buried under the kind of garbage mentioned above.

Ok so I've been seeing a lot of critique posts on The Realm and how things are being currently run and I figured I might as well throw my hat into the ring as a guy who is generally passionate about game design. I wanna go over all the moving parts in the server so far and talk about why I feel they do or do not work. Does that sound fun? I hope so. I'm gonna start with the factions, because if I'm being completely honest they are. the root of the problem. If you consider most if not all of the issues so far, they can all be looped back over to the factions as a sort of "inciting incident" to everything. so. Whats up with the factions? How did this all happen? The big issue with the factions that we are still seeing the effects of happened on day 1 of the event. They did something that they should NOT have done, and that's tying the gameplay mechanic to the pre-established cliques in the server. By no fault of the players who were just doing whatever they felt like at their own pace, the Kingdom of fools just so happened to become the most noticeable thing from the moment you spawn in, with foolish already recruiting people in long before the factions were ever established. Now, as a result, the factions are highly unbalanced, with yellow having a much greater number than blue or green. Along with this, there is now the red faction which is also imbalanced against blue and green, and to my understanding, there was also no choice in the matter of whether or not they had to actually be in this faction. For the undecided players, they have to choose a faction whether they want to or not. All of this is what kinda snowballed into literally everything else. Such as!! The weekly item collection quotas.

At a surface level, having a weekly quota to complete to incentivize people to play on the server each week seems like a really good thing! But this is offset by a couple of things right off the bat. The teams are of course imbalanced, and while that doesn't really matter competitively, it has led to the item amounts being increased for yellow to try and balance things back out. But this does something that's kinda becoming a theme on the server, which is instead of going back on one bigger problem, they tack something new onto the problem to fix it. But as a result, all it does is create another problem, or worse, two problems!! Put a pin in that since we got an example of it later. The other issue is that the punishment for failing is a pretty big one; that being losing a life. The reward for completing it is kinda boiled down to short-lived relief until you gotta run it back and do it all over again. And that kind of gameplay loop can be pretty stressful to deal with due to. The many issues regarding the life system.

Once again, I feel like the life system on its own has no issues! It's essentially a different flavour of hardcore minecraft, which encourages players to be more cautious and risk-averse, while also making them do something high-risk in order to get their lives back. On its own, it's a pretty good, straightforward system. But. This is quickly offset by how many things can fucking kill you. For starters, mobs are already more dangerous. I believe they're at hardcore difficulty at the start and that's already a lot, especially if you aren't a hardcore player, but on top of that, there is the threat of losing a life if you can't complete the item quota, and NOW there are other players who are supposed to just go out and kill people, adding yet another thing to worry about. The life system is starting to become a little bit too intense as a result, with there being more and more things you have to pay attention to and worry about.

And maybe all this isn't so bad. But there's an issue I'm beginning to see and it loops back to that thing I said about adding new problems as means to fix old ones. Snails?

As funny as it is to take a page out of wild life's book and give players with too-high levels immortal snails that decrease their levels, I think it is planting seeds for a much bigger potential issue, and that is the introducing of constant new gimmicks in what is essentially supposed to be a vanilla+ minecraft server. Instead of going to the root of problems and reworking them from the ground up (which, mind you, is very possible to do this early on in the server's run), gimmicks are introduced to get rid of the problem. The more problems there are, the more gimmicks there will be. And too many gimmicks will stop being fun and start being hard to keep track of and annoying. Gimmicks are a longevity killer. So. What can be done to fix literally all of these issues?

It might disappoint some to hear that the answer is sadly and simply put; you have to kill your darlings. Take it from me when I say that sometimes, getting rid of the aspects you love most can sometimes be the very best thing you can do for a project, and can even result in something that you love even more. So let's take this from the top here. Here is my jot list of things that could be done for each of these problems to fix them (this post is long enough as is):

change how the factions are structured entirely. Don't split them up based on cliques, and instead, make people group up with whoever they want, granted those groups are evenly split.

each group has to collect the same item every week. same item, same amount. OR make them all collect really similar items, i.e; one group collects oak saplings, one collects spruce saplings, and one collects birch saplings

Instead of punishing players for not completing the weekly item collection challenges, reward them for completing it! give them tons of skill points or helpful items. have players race for first second and third!

Don't limit the challenges to multiples of one item. Spice things up every week! First team to collect every music disc! First team to complete a scavenger hunt we made! First team to conquer a bastion together! Get creative with it so not every challenge is just grinding for objects!

make the challenges optional! You don't have to participate at all if you don't want to, and your only punishment is getting a smaller share of the team's reward.

please just let people decide for themselves if they want to be in the hostile faction. Or no faction at all! don't force them to choose. That's no fun.

if people are too high leveled, make a lower level cap and slowly increase it as time goes on or players complete more challenges! maybe increasing the cap can even be a reward!

The biggest problem right now is that a lot of the current decisions are squishing down the initial concept of player freedom by forcing them into factions, not letting them level up how they want, and punishing them for being good at the game. These kinds of issues can't go unnoticed for long, especially if more issues start to pile up on top of each other. If the players are ok with how things are then that's all that matters, but these are just my personal critiques as someone who really wants this server to be able to stay alive.

Mod Spotlight: Sonic Forces Overclocked

So this is an interesting little thing. For those of you not aware, Sonic Forces Overclocked (if I'm remembering right) was originally an attempt to "fix" Sonic Forces by expanding all of the levels and even completely rewriting the story. Obviously that's a big task, and the developers eventually realized that, scaling it down into what could best be described as an "Encore" of sorts -- an epilogue story where the villains make one last desperate final push, spread out across remixed versions of eight of the game's best levels. All told, it's about an hour worth of content.

Which is... actually totally fine. With eight (technically seven, but the final boss still counts) levels, there's plenty to see. Actually, pacing is probably Overclocked's strongest suit.

The original Sonic Forces was a pacing disaster; levels often felt like they were cut off at the knees, usually ending just as they were getting started. That's never true in Overclocked, as each level took me a good 3-5+ minutes to finish. Levels in Overclocked are also massively improved in other ways, too -- all that extra length is put to good use with Sonic's trademark alternate pathways, new enemies, and new interactive elements. Interactivity is up across the board. Sonic Forces loved to lock you into long, obnoxious scripted set pieces but Overclocked keeps you firmly in control most of the time.

Which brings me to something I'm not entirely sure is a complaint: difficulty balance. If you've been reading this blog long enough you know I can be pretty picky about difficulty balancing, and the way its handled in Overclocked is interesting.

Generally speaking, Overclocked treats the boost like "expert mode." It's there for people who know the levels already and want to push themselves to do it faster. At first it's fine -- boosting means you'll miss some alternate paths (shortcuts, most likely) but you can still bumble your way to the end of the level and coast by on C ranks. The further you get into the game, though, the more it starts to punish you for trying to go fast without knowing what you're doing. The safety nets that would catch you in earlier levels go away and Overclocked tells you to either slow down or get serious.

Which... I think I'm fine with? The thing it brings to mind for me is the two Sonic Rush games. My favorite one is Sonic Rush Adventure, because it's more accessible (read: easier to learn) than the first Sonic Rush. At the same time, the first Sonic Rush ends up being the more replayable of the two games, because it's a lot harder to master. The higher skill ceiling has kept me coming back to Sonic Rush long after it felt like I wrung all of the gameplay out of Sonic Rush Adventure.

So the idea of a Sonic game not only facilitating a higher skill ceiling but maybe even encouraging that? Not the worst way to balance things, as long as you keep the less skilled players in mind and communicate things correctly. Which, at least for me, I feel like Overclocked does. It started to kick my butt at certain points, but never in a way that felt too mean or unfair. And that's exactly the way it should be, though it should be noted I haven't exactly put myself through the hell of trying to go for higher ranks.

The one real complaint I have about the levels is something I've been observing for years, and unfortunately my fears came true: the lighting.

I've talked about my monitor in the past. I bought it somewhere between 2011 and 2012, so it's getting up there in years. I believe it was the first thing I ever purchased with my Youtube Earnings. It's starting to get kind of dim in its old age, and it's exacerbated by the fact I like to keep it on its "Theater Mode" setting, which gives me really good black levels (for an LCD) and amazing color. But it's an aging monitor, so those amazing black levels end up feeling a little dark, depending on the game. For those of you who caught my halloween streams this year, you know I ended up switching my monitor to its "Standard Mode" because it flattens the contrast and makes the darkest darks more visible. It could be argued that I should just leave the monitor in "Standard Mode" at this point, but I can't stand how Windows looks with it turned on.

To cut to the chase, I had to turn on "Standard Mode" for Sonic Forces Overclocked. In keeping with the theme of this being an encore, a lot of levels have wildly new lighting applied to them, with many levels set later in the evening or at night.

This blankets a lot of levels in a single color and lots of high-contrast shadows, which makes character, enemy, and hazard visibility incredibly difficult. In some levels with a lot of high-frequency noise (like Chemical Plant) it can be difficult to tell where your character even is on screen sometimes. In other levels, like the revamped Mystic Forest, the blue-on-purple-on-teal color scheme makes for a readability nightmare (as does the Death Egg Core level with Buddy, with a red character navigating a level full of orange fog, lit by pink and yellow lights).

When you're running through these stages at a couple hundred miles per hour, it all blurs together into something that's sometimes either too dark or too muddy to parse. At one point Sonic jokes that Infinite's aesthetic is "monochrome colors" but I'd rather have the levels be readable at a glance than hanging a lampshade on it. Things just need to be a little brighter, with a little more diversity of color to highlight the edges of roads and incoming hazards.

The story is... fine. It's not incredibly deep, and it doesn't need to be, so it works well enough. There's actually a surprising amount here, though, from mid-level chatter, map screen debriefings, and even full on cutscenes. Voice acting duties seem to be handled by Adrenaline Dubs, who I subscribed to last year for their surprisingly good dubs of Archie and IDW Sonic comics. They turn in some pretty high quality work here, often rivaling Sega's official dubbing efforts. My only real complaint is that Sonic's dialog is a little too referential; his call-outs during levels often reference other infamous lines from different Sonic games ("The whole city's on fire!", etc.), and sort of like how the game pokes fun at the monochromatic lighting, there's a line where Sonic even cringes at his own dialog a little bit. "We're admitting it's bad, but still doing it anyway" is not a healthy design ethos.

Earlier I mentioned cutscenes, and rather than the complex, high-budget cutscenes Sega had in the original Forces, Overclocked instead opts for motion comic videos. Artistic duties for these cutscenes are shared between a handful of 4 or 5 different artists, each bringing their own art style to their scenes. Generally, I think this is a good move. A little more consistency between artists would make it feel a bit more polished, but seeing the art style change between scenes has its own charms, too. It really drives home how much of Sonic Forces Overclocked was not only a team effort, but to some degree, a community effort. Many different hands touched this project, and it is better for it.

It's easy to focus on the negative things I said about Sonic Forces Overclocked here and think I came away not really liking it. Nothing could be further from the truth. I think this is a genuinely impressive mod, with significantly better level design than the base game. It has a few problems, sure, but the overall product, when taken as a whole, is absolutely wonderful. This might be a bit incendiary and hyperbolic, but this close to the top of the list as the most fun I've had with a Sonic game this year. If you own Sonic Forces on Steam, it's not to be missed.
