Joining the squid games could possibly be the last thing any person with common sense and a reason to live would consider doing. Unless they either had none.
That's what it looked like for you. The games you had to do to win 45.6 billion won had you either questioning if it's still worth it to still keep going or just to end it all on this island.
Out of all the people in these games, there's one face that you despised seeing and wondered how he's still alive after what he did, Myung-Gi.
He's your ex boyfriend. Being with him was great at first, but once he was invested in the crypto coin thing business, it felt like you're being cheated on. It also didn't help that he had an affair behind your back with a girl named Kim Jun-hee who turned up pregnant.
You didn't hate Kim Jun-hee, as you felt bad for her that your ex abandoned her and their baby, but the whole thing hurted you.
There's nothing more you wanted to get out of here with enough money to move to another place and start off fresh.
When you first woke up in the dormitory with all the other players, you wondered where this possibly could go. You looked around to see so many unfamiliar faces.
Then a man in a pinkish red suit all the way across the room wuth a black covered mas with a white triangle comes out from double doors and starts explaining why majority are here. Because of their debts.
They showed different videos of people playing Ddakji and getting slapped in the face. There was one face you recognized, your ex. It wouldn't be surprising that he was in debt for trying to chase after the crypt coin thing.
It looks like you're not the only one who hated him, many people who fell for the crypto coin were also mad at him. A purple-haired guy stood out from the rest, as he was a rapper you heard from others who were apparently fans. You had no interest in him or your ex but were wondering what the whole ordeal of winning money is.
You had to sign a waiver for the games, and you were soon directed to take pictures. It was rough enough. Then you would have to climb stairs that seemed like you were going to Mount Everest. You saw your ex from the right side across. You also didn't want to risk being seen.
Finally, you reached the first game after what seemed like an eternity. There was a huge robot doll and the whole layout was supposed to imitate a school playground with its blue sky and sand ground.
"Hey there pretty" You turn around and see the purple haired guy who was talking to your ex
"Who are you?" You exclaimed looking him up and down not in the mood to be hit on.
"I'm Choi Seung-hyun, Thanos for my music. You might of heard my raps before?"
"If I did, I probably would want to be deaf right now. Including not hearing this conversation."
He pretended to be hurt and put a hand over his heart.
"Ouch girl. Cold aren't you?"
You rolled your eyes. He sees another girl walks by and also tries talking to her. Poor girl, you thought.
"Y/N?" You hear your name being called and look around.
"Y/N!" A hand fell on your shoulder and you flinched turning around.
It was Myung-Gi. Your panic turned into annoyance as you rolled your eyes again.
"What are you doing here?" He asks
"Should be asking you that too, but I think it's obvious."
"Can we please talk?"
"What's there to talk about Myung-Gi? You chose a cyrpt coin over me and cheated on me, and got another girl pregant"
"And I regret it very much. Please come back."
"Share those regrets with the others in here too, including the mother of your child."
He tried to reply back but you walked away from him, ignoring him.
Speakers came on, explaining the rules of the game.
A screaming man came into the front and said it's not what we think the game is. He exclaims that if you move, you'll die.
People around you scoffed and found the man crazy. It seemed like to you he was crazy too, but what if he was right?
He was still screaming telling people not to move a muscle when the game starts.
The robot started turning around and putting her hand up to the tree to not look at the other player.
It started singing.
"Everyone freeze!" The man in front says.
Nobody moved a muscle. Your eyes looked around and saw no one moving. What if the guys telling the truth?
The doll looked away and you started moving forward quickly along with everyone else.
"Everyone freeze!" Yelled again the older man.
There was a scream coming from a girl who moved. She laughed exclaiming she just moved. A bullet came through her head and she dropped dead.
The guy really wasn't lying then. One wrong move, you're dead. More people started moving and more gunshots were coming.
Bodies were dropping. People are screaming. This was a bad idea to be here. You were also pretty sure you were going to die with your ex boyfriend. That another cherry on top to add.
"If you don't make it to the finishing line on time, you'll also die." The man yells but has his mouth covered like he was going to take a sneeze.
It felt impossible to win this game. You were so sure you were going to win money but now the only thing you could be winning is death. You wanted to see if Myung-Gi was still alive.
But you couldn't risk being shot. Everyone sooned formed into a single file line. The man explained that the doll can't see what's behind a person if there's a bigger person in front.
More gunshots came. More bodies dropping. You couldn't stop now though. You're close to the finish line, you can feel it.
You soon reached the finish line relieved that you made it alive. You looked around for Myung-Gi to see if he's alive.
Why do you care so much about him? You thought to yourself.
It's just basic human sympathy you thought. Hating him is one thing, but him dying is another.
The game ended and you witnessed the man who warned about the game, you see his number was 456 and another, a woman helping a man who got shot in the leg reach the finish line get shot in the head.
This isn't just a game. This life or death. Everyone including you who passed were allowed to go back to the dorms.
Zoned out walking, seeing bodies and blood, you hear your name being called.
"Y/N!"
Turning around to see who called your name, you see Myung-Gi run up to you.
"Hey, are you okay?"
A light smile came from your face.
"Yes I'm alright and you?"
"Alive thank God." He chuckled.
You chuckled lightly but didn't know what to say after. Usually, you would have something smart to say to him but after what happened, you wanted nothing more to be out of here.
There were yelling and shouts to how the man knew they would shoot if you lost the game. They were accusing the man of being behind the game.
A pink guard then came out and congratulated us for completing the first game. It then if a majority voted to O, you could leave the game.
Everyone chose their own sides O and X. You chose X, even though you desperately wanted the money to be able to move to another city. You see Jun-Hee, his other ex, chose X too. Myung-Gi chose O, which you weren't surprised.
Unfortunately there were more O's than X's which meant you had to stay. You were heartbroken but also upset and turned to Myung-Gi. Now you wish he died in the first game.
You went up to him and turned him around aggressively and slapped him across the face. People looked at you guys, but you didn't care.
"You're really that selfish, you had to choose O?"
"Y/N-"
"The mother of your child is in this game and you choose O. I should have known from the start dating you was a bad idea. If these games don't kill you, I will."
You stormed off away from him and went to your bed. Myung-Gi probably thought you were bluffing about you killing him.
Something deep down you wanted to keep that word true.
It looks like you'll have to wait and see the next day.

another new year with bakugou katsuki.
One more hour ‘til the New Year.
“So,” you started, “we’re about to ring in another year. Guess I’m stuck with you again, huh?”
Bakugou paused from tidying up the scattered toys in your shared bedroom. The gears in his head need a moment to get to processing.
“Hah?”
“It’s just hitting me, you know? I’ve been putting up with you for how long now? Feels like forever.”
A scowl immediately made itself known in his lips, unsure if you’re joking or not. “The hell are you gettin’ at?”
You tapped your chin as though deep in thought. “Maybe it’s not too late to return you to your parents. They probably miss having you around, anyway.”
“You’re jokin’.”
Bakugou’s eyes blink dumbfoundedly.
“Does your parents have a no-return policy?”
His voice dropped to a grumble, and his brows furrowed. He finishes tidying up the toys and joins you on the bed, cuddling close to you (even if he doesn’t consider it cuddling, moreso invading your personal space—but you’re his wife, so he gets a pass).
“As if. You think you can just ship me off like I’m some Amazon package? No way in hell, dummy. You’re stuck with me.”
And I’ll gladly be stuck with you for eternity, he finds himself wanting to say but refrains from doing so.
“Stuck with you, huh? That’s a bold statement, Katsu. What if I do want to send you back?” You laughed softly.
Bakugou snaked his arms around you, pushing himself impossibly closer to the point where you could tease him for being too clingy, his lips tugging into a pout he’d never admit to. “You can’t. You said yes when I proposed. You walked down the aisle. You said ‘for better or worse.’ That’s on you.”
You smiled, combing your hands through his hair. It may appear all spiky and rigid, but you’ve learned that it’s actually fluffy and soft—definitely well taken care of.
“I don’t remember that part. I think you dragged me down the aisle, all grumpy and scowling.”
“I didn’t drag you anywhere. You were practically sprintin’ to get hitched to me.”
“Was I?”
“You were,” he scoffs, but it’s soft, as if thankful of the fact. “And now you’re mine forever. No refunds, no returns, no exchanges.”
The sound of your laugh is something that’ll never get old to him. He could play it on repeat and never choose to turn it off.
“Forever’s a long time, Katsu.”
“Forever’s not a long time when I get to spend it with you,” he says. It’s the truth, and he can never bring himself to lie to you. Not now, not ever.
Because if anything, Bakugou Katsuki loves with his whole heart, puts every piece of himself in the things he does and has done, and he’ll be damned if he ever lets you settle for anyone less.
“Spend it with the little brats, too.” Ah, your two daughters have him wrapped around their little fingers.
You rolled your eyes. “Confident, aren’t you?”
“Definitely.” He reached out and grabbed your hand, lacing your fingers together. He looks at you with this all too familiar look, as if asking for a simple thing.
“And don’t even joke about tryin’ to get rid of me. You’d be lost without me.”
“Oh, absolutely helpless,” you tease, indulging him with a soft, chaste kiss.
Bakugou snorts. “Whatever.”
“Forever, right?”
“Forever,” Bakugou said firmly, resting his forehead against yours. His voice dropped into a quieter, almost shy tone. “And don’t forget, you’re stuck with me, too. No way I’m lettin’ you go.”
Your heart melted a little at his rare softness, and you kissed his cheek. “Fine, Katsu. I’ll keep you. But only because the return policy’s expired.”
“You’re lucky I love you.”
“No, you’re lucky I love you,” you joked.
“Damn right I am,” he replied, choosing to enjoy this serene moment with you rather than bothering to watch the same old boring fireworks to celebrate the new year an hour later.
Your husband can recreate any fireworks shows any day, anyway.

arcane characters as sugar mommies/daddies ˚₊‧꒰ა $ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚
been thinking about mel as a sugar mommy and decided to spread the joy to other characters >:)
haven’t proofread but i was obsessed with the idea and needed to get my thoughts out, hope you enjoy ⸜(。˃ ᵕ ˂ )⸝♡
cw: don’t think gender is specified but i had a fem reader in mind so that might show, smut, degrading language used in a consensual manner, minors dni, 18+ only
Vi
the alluring one
you’re trying to buy a round of drinks when your card declines and just as you’re about to die from embarrassment, her warm hand settles on your shoulder as her scarred lip smirks down at you
she pays for multiple rounds of drinks and before you know it, you’re making out in the alleyway
the rest is history
you never thought you’d be in an arrangement like this but she had her ways of convincing you otherwise
has a bunch of different girls on her roster that she maybeeee doesn’t tell you about
don’t worry, you’re the only sugar baby she pays this much for
when you find out you can’t even be that mad about it - she’s so hot you’d let her get away with anything
you’re smart enough to be pouty around her and take advantage of the situation - get ready for the greatest apology of your life
she invites you to her place just for you to find thousands of roses in the foyer and a gift box with your name on the table
she has you follow a trail of clues until you end up in her bedroom, still juggling an armful of gifts, where vi is waiting for you with a hopeful look
she rushes over to take the boxes from you and smothers your face in feather light kisses before apologising for making you feel shitty
her apology doesn’t stop there though and carries on well into the night
you complain about your bus being late? she’s already sent an uber black to your location
you don’t know which gaming console you want? she’s got it covered - multiple packages with every console you mentioned are arriving by the next day
you’re at a party but you’re feeling needy? she’s already dragging you to a storage cupboard, crowd be damned, and eating you out with such fervour you think you might see heaven
pays for your gym membership at a place like equinox and makes sure you two take full advantage of the sauna - it might be warm in there, but you come out sweaty for a whole other reason
has a garage full of vintage motorbikes that cost a fortune and only she can touch
pays you your days salary (and then some) so you can take time off work just so you can visit her at her home gym
she uses you to show off her impressive strength by lifting you as if you weigh nothing in her arms
getting used as her personal gym equipment is a major turn on
lives to impress you with her physique, she gets so pleased with herself when she notices your eyes darken as they wander over her toned body
she definitely has mirror ceilings and she definitely makes you stare at yourself as she fucks you stupid underneath them
Jinx
the mischevious one
she’s the rich artsy kind and you’re her muse
this means she needs you around 24/7 in case creativity strikes her - naturally, this leads to her paying for your company
has you come over to the studio all the time
one time, she set down a canvas on the floor, told you to strip, covered you two in paint and fucked you right there and then
the rolling around, teeth bared, guttural moan, primal kind of fucking; she relished in the bruises that bloomed on your neck and chest as she sucked on your most sensitive spots
the resulting painting was quite impressive to look at, even if thinking about its creation made you more flustered than you’ve ever been
her hands aren’t only good for creating art pieces it seems
she’s one of the sugar mommy’s that pays you the most since she views your company as priceless when it comes to her work
you get anything you ask for, seriously
you’re decked head to toe and all of it is something jinx either gifted you or gave you the money to buy
if it’s something not available to buy, she buys luxurious materials that cost more than your salary just to craft it for you
takes you to the kind of stiff, fancy places she hates just to have you wear vibrating underwear which she has the controls for
sometimes it’s even the opening night of her art gallery
she makes it a challenge: how long can you go without drawing attention to yourself due to your moans - the longer, the more money you get
it’s downright obscene, the way she knowingly glances at you with subdued glee , your slight whimpers echoing as you try your best to muffle the sounds, tears welling up in your eyes
she goes back to chatting up art collectors and investors as she secretly turns up the power of the vibrations hitting you right to the core
she calls you her “sweet thing” when you get back to her penthouse and she makes it up to you by giving you her bank card
she likes to make you laugh during sex too, she doesn’t like if you try to make it too “dour”
Caitlyn
the inexperienced one
cait’s been single for a while and it’s obvious it’s taking its toll
her friends encourage her to go out and meet someone new but she’s too focused on work to waste time on someone she probably won’t like
one day she stumbles upon a sugar baby site and says fuck it
the first date is pretty awkward but after a couple drinks, you manage to loosen her up so she’s more free with you
she has no clue what her role in this kind of arrangement is so she goes all out from the get-go; she loves spending money on you to the point it’s a bit insane even if she tells you not to worry
has to ask her friends for advice on the group chat constantly (she has a history of fumbling attractive people and she’s not letting it happen again)
adds you to her country club membership so you two can play tennis on the weekends
this place is fancyyyyyy but she makes sure you feel comfortable
gets you a instructor if you don’t know how to play
this obviously means she buys you about ten different outfits with tennis bracelets to match each
buys you a penthouse in the best part of town, close to where she lives of course so she has easy access to you
you two christen every single room in your new place, no stone left unturned
scissoring in the large bedroom, head on the lavish kitchen countertops, taking turns fucking with the strap on the balcony with a breathtaking view, fingering in the living room - everything and anything you can think of
her job isn’t done until the two of you are exhausted and wailing loud enough that the neighbours 20 floors down are complaining
she is insatiable when it comes to you, it’s like you lit a fire within her that she can’t put out no matter how hard she tries
completely adores how cute you act when you try to deny her pricey gifts
even more so when she gifts you a first edition book and your demeanour turns more panicked by the second
really though, she’s freaking out more than you are although she doesn’t show it often
her biggest fear is gifting you something you hate which leads to you ending everything
you’ve never had a sugar mommy treat you like this
she gives her assistant special instructions to let you into her office at any time, a privilege only you’re blessed with
you manage to distract her and before she knows it, she’s forced to make herself look presentable in only five minutes despite having a smudge-proof lipstick mark on her cheek she can’t get off for the life of her
doesn’t want to admit that she wants more than a purely transactional relationship with you
Silco
the generous one
gives you an exorbitant amount of money every time you see him
like, a CRAZY amount
it barely registers for him though, he has more money than should be possible
he goes as far as to give you his black card even if you didn’t ask for it
goads you to max it out and somehow, despite spending so much, you’ve barely dented the thing which makes him laugh
he expects you to spend most of the money he gives you on luxuries you wouldn’t normal buy and asks you to do a haul and model it all for him in his office
behind the scenes, he’s busy paying off your any debts you might have, setting up a trust fund for you, looking for houses you would like
wants you to be set up for life
showers you in decadent lingerie that fits you perfectly from boutiques like la perla, agent provocateur and honey birdette - only the best for his girl
has to replace your lingerie quite often though, he goes feral when he sees you all dolled up just for him
even more so if you were good and listened to his demands, buying the exact lingerie he wanted to see you in
has you sign a detailed contract before the arrangement begins since he wants to make sure you’re comfortable with everything
also wants to make sure you follow his rules
wants you to only refer to him using “sir” when it’s just the two of you
i see him as the kind of sugar daddy that does expect some sugar in return
he’s very abrasive in bed, and calls you all types of degrading names which only serves to turn you both on further
has some…curious interests that he pays you more for indulging in - he is a gentleman after all
“my money hungry slut” and “little whore” are his favourites
takes you on shopping sprees for aftercare (and maybe he does cuddle too but you can’t let anyone else know that) - he doesn’t want you to think he views you a less than just because of the life path you’ve chosen
his idea of pillow talk is giving you tips on the stock market and trading
Sevika
the brusque one
she has commitment issues, is afraid of vulnerability and has a high sex drive
this has led her romantic relationships to fail in one way or another, which is where you come in
she sees it as a simple business transaction - nothing more, nothing less
she likes having you around but don’t get confused: she doesn’t want a real relationship with you
doesn’t sugar coat her words around you and while it might make anyone else run for the hills, you appreciate her honesty
having someone as gorgeous as you coo and hang onto her every word does inflate her ego
everyone wants you, eyes appraising you up and down, but they can’t have you - only she can
so punctual with her payments that it genuinely feels like any other regular job
she looks down on those so called sugar mommies that skimp out of paying a fair rate - you don’t need to worry with her, you’ll be getting more than you ever really needed
despite presenting a stoic image, she can’t help but give in to your every whim
all you have to do is glance at a display window with even a hint of longing and she’s immediately rolling her eyes, dragging you into the shop to buy it for you
if you get tired walking around and ask her to carry you she will huff and puff but that doesn’t stop her from scooping you up anyway
she has a strap on AND it’s the kind that ejaculates too
you two go to luxury toy makers and get straps custom made to tailor to both of your wants and desires
she perhaps gets attachments for her mechanical arm too…
she doesn’t skimp out on the good stuff when it comes to you
her hot grunts ring in your ears as she grinds into you, her body seemingly encompassing your entire body and mind
creampies you every time and fucks the cum back inside of your dripping hole just to watch it leak back out and repeat the cycle again until you’re begging out for her
you’re in a daze for a good ten minutes after and she can’t help but snort at the faces you make
maybe this isn’t just a simple transaction to her
Vander
the hesitant one
vander feels icky about the relationship he has with you at the start
he’s much older than you and you’re still in university, it makes him feel like such a bad person who’s preying on your vulnerability
you make sure to always remind him that he’s single-handedly paying for your tuition
you love what he does for you!
once he gets past that hurdle though, god have mercy on your soul, you will be ruined for other people
he basically acts as your mentor just with some extra benefits on the side
loves to hear you yap about any projects you’re working on and does his best to help with any issues at university
he’s the type to text you good morning and good night every single day without fail
even gives you a bigger allowance if you wake up early and reply to his good morning texts quickly
what? it’s an incentive to get you to attend your lectures
likes to be called daddy even if it does make him blush intensely
he gets off on the idea of being your protector and the only one to provide for you
cockwarms you when you’re working on assignments and it turns your brain to mush every time
spanks you when you stop paying attention
honestly it feels like he’s working against you whenever he does this
also gets jealous when you talk about dates you had with other people
he never made the relationship an official one, but that doesn’t stop him from fucking you hard, his hand prints left on your hips to mark his territory
definitely can’t walk the next day and he’s so smug
down BAD
Ambessa
the teasing one
ambessa has play things in every city; you name a place, odds are she’s got a hook up there
you’re no exception of course
in fact, you’re her favourite out of them all
whenever ambessa calls, you run to be at her service
L O A D E D
exposes you to experiences you never even knew existed, i’m talking about things only the upper 1% can do
she’s the kind of sugar mommy that likes to hear about your day over a glass of wine
the mundanity helps her calm down from her hectic life
she will hold the things she does for you over your head
it’s mean but she views it as her right considering all the luxuries she gives you access to
jokes she’s going to go to a perfumer and get the scent of your sex turned into a perfume
when you accept a surprise gift from her, it turns out it was not a joke - you should’ve known something was up the second her wicked smile made an appearance
actually doesn’t smell too bad
has you use it every single time you’re around her and only then
she’s a FREAK what can i say
whisks you off to couple spa days; you both deserve a little rest and relaxation every now and then
speaking of spa days, she often asks you to massage her which usually ends with your large hands pawing all over your body
she likes receiving more than giving but she still prioritises giving you plenty of orgasms through the night
what kind of sugar mommy would she be without ensuring you’re also satisfied with your arrangement?
you’re worn out from what she considers foreplay
still, you need to make sure you’re being as thoughtful as she is otherwise you’re getting kicked down the rungs of her sugar baby ladder
Mel
the cunning one
mel is the best sugar mommy around i know it
doesn’t do it often - she tries to limit herself to one sugar baby every once in a while
she sees them as worthwhile investments
if you want to be her sugar baby, you need to bring something useful to the table
she meets you at a science exhibition and is thoroughly impressed with your work
you need funding to complete your research and she needs relief from her stressful life as a counsellor
a win-win situation if you ask her
you don’t see her often, she’s too busy solving problems with the council, but when you do, she makes sure it’s worth your time
expensive dinner dates, surprise weekend get-aways, opera concerts - anything you ask for, it’s yours
not only is she funding all of your research, she takes you to galas where you can mingle with the elites you need to win over to achieve more exposure for your research
she usually sends boxes full of clothes and shoes to your house for you to wear to these outings, and picks you up fancy black car with a chauffeur and bottles of wine in coolers
she has her hand on your leg the entire journey there, a faint smirk on her lips when she notices how hot and bothered you are
in a relationship like this, she likes to be the dominant one in bed
she doesn’t expect anything sexual in return but if you’re willing she’s more than happy to fulfill those needs too
leans towards being sensual and romantic but that doesn’t mean she won’t make sure to fuck you thoroughly
heavy on foreplay to the point you think you’re going to pass out from the pent up energy in you
has lots of toys she likes to use on you, she’s very experimental and wants to test which one you respond to the most
also likes you to use the toys on her too and when she sees you suck her wetness off the toy you just used on her, she melts into a puddle
yeah, you’re getting an instant increase on your allowance and you’re getting a new custom wardrobe
Jayce
the proud one
jayce comes from a relatively well-off family, but his inventions launched him into stardom and left him with more money than he knew what to do with
he decides the best thing he can do is spread the love
he finds you on a site for this kind of stuff, something he would rather die than admit, and knew he had to get you on a date with him
makes you custom jewellery set with the most unique stones you’ve ever seen and loves when you wear them out on dates with him
you probably have the entire gdp of a small country just on your wrist alone
wants a play-by-play of all the things you bought that week, he’s lowkey into hearing how much of his money you spent on treating yourself
he wants you to buy even more things with his money than you already do which flusters you but you give in every time
he’s another one that wants a fashion show where you try on everything you bought
he just likes to sit and clap with a smile as you twirl for him
loves to show you off at all the balls and galas he’s invited to
takes you on late night drives in his alpine a110 r-turini and he always has one arm, big with straining muscles, around your headrest which never fails to make your heart flutter
oh i can see him being into role play
maybe he’s your boss and you’re the maid he just caught stealing from him lmao
he loves to get sloppy head from you and offers you all sorts of gifts in return
talking, or helplessly groaning in this situation, about all the ways you can drain his money is his form of dirty talk, “yeah, just like that babe. you want me to buy that new phone don’t you? well, take me like the good girl i know you are and work for it.”
he’s so whipped for you it borders on quite cute imo
Viktor
the cocky one
viktor came into new money after selling the patent for one of his inventions
he is well aware that he’s an attractive guy and could have pretty much anyone he wants, but his long work hours aren’t conducive to healthy relationships
so he takes it upon himself to get a sugar baby, no strings attached
has you stay with him in his lab to keep him company - he loves listening to your idle chatter about things he has no interest in
but when it’s you talking about them he’s captivated by every word
likes to call you his “cute lab assistant” and tries to hide how much he likes it when you call him your “handsome scientist”
he fails obviously
he explains extremely complicated topics in a very contrived way, even when he knows he can simplify it for the average person, because seeing the dumbfounded look on your face gets him going
closes down a whole shopping mall just so you can frolic about and shop to your hearts content; oh, don’t worry about all those bags, he has a guy to carry them all so you two can focus on having a nice date ^^
gonna be real, he’s the kind of guy to fuck you against the wall of the changing room, not caring that the bashful shop assistants can hear every single clap of skin slapping against each other and the strangled moans you both let out
buys all the clothes you tried on, you’re too fucked out to notice the looks you get from the workers, and the fact that the clothes might be a bit…dirty 😭
at least he tips them enough to make up for it
sprays his designer cologne on your gifts so you remember who you belong to
playfully suggests you give him a lap dance so he gets his money worth but you both know it was anything but a joke
good thing you love putting on a show for him!
this guy is such a troll, he literally throws money on you and slips bills in between the straps of your underwear as you sensually dance for him in the lingerie he paid for
has to control himself from pouncing on you then and there
he really enjoys the way you can both tease each other and not take things too seriously

Wha--?! Silk finally finished her fem Zoro design after (checks notes) literally 6 months since she made the canvas in procreate?
I'll break down design thoughts and share some fun bonus pics under the cut:
I LOVE long hair on Zoro, I think that was the first change I wanted to implement. Zoro in canon actually has a really interesting relationship with gender dynamics which (if for some reason you're reading this and you haven't watched One Piece) can seem out of left field for the "dumb brute" character. His rivalry with and reverence for Kuina suggests he doesn't adhere to the idea that women are weaker than men. Later on, however, during his confrontation with Monet and Tashigi during Punk Hazard, his hesitation to slash her down reveals that he's subconsciously over-protective of women because he thinks they're inherently weaker. I actually don't have any problem with this character trait, I think it makes him feel more real as a person and he obviously gets shit-talked enough about it in the story itself. But how did I want to reflect these beliefs if Zoro had been born a woman? Easy: internalized misogyny and applying value to herself via her appearance.
My version of Zoro grew up wanting to fight with swords but her only chance of entering the dojo was to work under the proprietress, Lady Shimotsuki to maintain the property, cook meals for the male students, and eventually be a good wife to the current heir, Kuina. She learns that, to get what she wants, she must be the ideal woman, even if she stays up all night training swordsmanship with Kuina when she isn't supposed to. He treats her love for swordplay seriously and treats her like an equal, which sparks a bond between them and eventually leads to Zoro's goal of becoming the world's greatest swordsman after his sudden, accidental death.
After years of intense training (now that Lady Shimotsuki admits that she'll need a new heir and Zoro is the closest thing she has) Zoro's finally old enough to leave and begin her journey. She starts letting go of the idea that she has to look pulled together to be taken seriously because she can just kill anyone who looks down on her. Her clothing falls into disrepair, she wears outfits that help her move in combat, and she starts tossing her hair up into messy, knotted buns under her bandana. Even so, she keeps her hair long like rolling hills of grass. (At least during pre-timeskip. She lops off her hair to prove to Mihawk that she's serious about being trained.)
I've put her in a thin sweater that she stitches (poorly) back together after her first interaction with Mihawk. (I kept one sleeve because I was inspired by the santoryuu Nami that Oda drew that one time.) I also wanted to girl-ify the ubiquitous haramaki so I picked leg warmers for her because I think they're sufficiently "dated" enough to be kinda analogous with his old man belly warmer. I also love gyaru fashion, sue me.
Here is a screenshot of her as a blonde:
And here is a sketch of her post-timeskip where she's fully embraced her butch nature:
Hubba hubba, am I right?
Check out my tag "girl piece original design" to see more of my genderbending art! Next post, I'll put all my East Blue Crew designs together! I can't believe it's taken this long but I AM SO HAPPPPPYYYYY

knee socks | lewis hamilton
summary | singer!y/n released a song which exposes lewis' lack of attention toward her in their relationship and he isn't too pleased with it.
warnings | 18+. smut. oral (f receiving), orgasm denial, vaginal sex, dirty talk, lewis being a little mean, english is not my first language, pls lmk what else i missed
author's note | i have nothing to post rn and this has been sitting in my drafts so weeks so here you go. lmk if u guys enjoy this and if u want me to write more written fics.
lewis is a private man, he made that clear all throughout his life, since the first world championship trophy was handed to him, the moments everybody's eyes in the world started to set on him, following his every move, to this day. he doesn't like channeling his personal matters to the public. sure there are a lot of people who'd be interested to know, journalists who would sell their souls for an exclusive interview with him, but nothing can make him give up his peace anymore. he had his moments when he was younger. everything was open to interpretation for the media and fans. but as he gets older, things changed. private life should stay private.
you are a musician. and it's risky, dating a musician. he's seen it. he's been with one, and he is one. he thought he already knew, he thought he understood what he was getting himself back into. you are different from his ex. you make your own music, write your own songs, not afraid to be vulnerable through your art, never care however fans and media are going to interpret them. they'll never know the truth. it's none of their business anyway. he doesn't regret dating you, though. nothing could make him regret being with you. he wouldn't trade it even for his 8th championship.
but deep down, lewis knows this day will come. where a little inconvenience happens in your relationship was enough to set you off completely. the day where you stopped listening to the logical part of your brain and follow your heart instead. the day you pissed off enough to finally say fuck it.
in your defense, you were so caught up in your feelings. part of you also honestly didn't care. you are a singer, a musician, as much as he is. this is how you express yourself. he should have known that by now. if he didn't want the whole world to know how fucking busy he is with the race season to the point where he never spent time with you anymore, he should have pay more attention to you.
you would have argued with that if only you could form a single coherent sentence right now. but all you could say was—
"please...."
do not ask how long has this been going on. he could lie and say hours and you'll believe it. he could ask you to do anything and you'll obey. it's not like you have a choice. if it pleases him, if it will somehow get you the release you have been desperately craving, fucking hell, you'll do it. that's how it is right now. you, half naked on the bed. pants discarded somewhere on the carpeted bedroom floor. panties gone to fuck knows where. his old band t-shirt that you're wearing is pushed up, exposing your belly and almost your chest.
him? in between your legs. inked hands holding your thighs open for his tongue to explore your folds in every way he knows, drawing all kinds of sounds out of you, pushing you to the edge again and again but not quite giving you the release you've been desperately needing. not after what you said about him in the song, no.
a whine escapes your lips yet again when he pulls himself off of you just as you're about to reach another peak. he looks up, a smirk decorating his face as his tongue licks your arousal from his thick lips.
bastard.
"i didn't ask you to beg." he replies calmly, caressing your inner thigh all the way up to your knee, making you almost jerk up at the slightest of his touch.
of course he is calm. he's enjoying this. torturing you. driving you insane. god how you wish the tables are turn right now. how you wish that you have the energy to flip the two of you and get your revenge on him, showing him how it feels to be in your shoes. he'd be worse than you are right now. you can say that confidently because you've seen it. some rare moments where he handed over the control to you, letting you take charge in bed and do whatever you wanted to him. easiest way to say, he was a mess.
"you're not being fair—" was instead all you could say in such a pathetic tone that even you did not recognize yourself.
"i wasn't planning to be."
your pussy clenches around nothing at the casualness of his reply. your mind is pissed at him for ruining your orgasms but your body couldn't help but craving for his touch. you've seen the dominance side of him almost every night and yet the calmness that he's radiating right now even though you know how angry he is at you and your song is enough to send shivers down your spine.
there's something about lewis being angry and yet not completely showing it.
it turns you on even more.
"tell me what i want to hear first." he demands, his thick digits rubbing your bundle of nerves. your back arches into his touch. your eyelids flutter, broken moans fall from your lips.
the pleasure didn't last long. a soft, frustrated sigh leaves you as do his fingers from your clit. just when you were going to try catching your breath, he plunges two fingers inside without warning.
"fuck— oh my god—"
he hovers above you, eyes never leaving your face, watching your every reaction, the way your jaw hangs low. the thickness of his digits makes you feel so full already, you couldn't form neither words nor sounds.
"fuck, fuck—" and when he moves his fingers, you already saw heaven. the wet squelching sound from your arousal is so sinful it almost made you feel embarrassed at how wet you still are even after having your pleasure punished by him. your hand reaches up to his free arm near your head, clinging to him for support. your nails dig deep into his inked skin, drawing a silent hiss from him.
"come on," he says again. "tell me what i want to hear."
this might be it. he's fingering you with passion, hitting that sweet spot over and over again, making your legs tremble. he never half-assed anything in his life, especially when it comes to your pleasure but something tells you that maybe this is when he thinks that you have had your lesson and it's time you give you that release. he just loves you that much. and you always get what you want.
"n-no." you stutter in defiance.
he smirks again. your denial only makes this more fun for him, which is apparent in the way his fingers move rougher and faster right now. and you notice how his other digits are avoiding your clit, making it a little harder for you to reach another peak.
"four orgasms denied and you still wanna be stubborn?"
only four? it felt like hundreds, you manage to think to yourself despite how hazy your mind feels right now.
"please...." you croak out, and that's how far you'll beg for his forgiveness.
but he's not satisfied. he pulls out his fingers, and you would have groaned if you could even speak right now.
"no...."
"don't worry, sweetie," he cuts you off surprisingly, sitting up straight again. you prop yourself up on your elbows and watch as he lines up the tip of his cock against your entrance, teasing your folds slightly. you feel as if air has been knocked out of your lungs. you didn't even think that this was a possibility tonight, to be fucked by him. to feel his thick cock inside you. genuinely you thought he would leave you high and dry, though it's very unlikely for him. but still. he could truly be that cruel when he wants to.
"i'll make you come if that's what you wanted so badly. but only on my cock. and i'll make you come again and again until i finally get my apology."
you swallow thickly.
that is certainly a promise.

For Caius!
The Fool: Where did Rook's journey begin? What were they doing before joining the Veilguard? - Caius was an active Warden Ensign, and he did a lot of investigative work like Evka and Antoine, but more so in Evka's role. He would do the physical labor and hunting down for experiments and investigations.
The Magician: What are Rook's thoughts on Solas? Do they change as the story progresses? -Caius started out believing Solas was a heartless bastard. Someone capable of killing a child (personal lore). Someone capable of dooming the world. By the end? He was just....sad. He saw a lonely, heartbroken, and abused spirit turned man.
The High Priestess: Which does Rook obey more: their head or their heart? -Caius obeys both, but this of course means his head. He puts logic to what he feels, he tries to be mature but he still gets yanked around by a compelling enough emotional burst.
The Empress: What does family mean for Rook? -It's.....complicated. Found family means the world to him, like any self respecting Transman, you know? His actual blood kin live in Rivain, and he hasn't spoken to any of them ever since he left for the Wardens. He....doesn't think they'd even recognize him, outside of his obvious bithmarks.
The Emperor: What does Rook's leadership style look like? -Everyone not only has a voice, but deserves to be heard. He accepts that his role is to be the actionary - he takes everyone's opinions and their insight and he breaks it down into as objective a choice as he can. Doesn't make the most popular man, or the most hated one.
The Hierophant: Is Rook religious? How do they feel about the religious organizations that impact their life the most? -Caius grew up in touch with Spirits and the free to try style of the Rivaini. It's a very mix bag style of religion, and he tries to be really open minded! But this whole Veilguard situation.... he doesn't trust the ancient texts to be in favor of the modern man, type scenario. He peoples faith in people, not old hymns.
The Lovers: Who is your Rook's most significant relationship within the Veilguard? How do they help Rook feel seen and understood? -Davrin. Yes, Caius and Lucanis are lovers, and yes Caius and Taash are DEEPLY similar (right down to their damn ethnic cultural coding) but Davrin - another man who understands how little time Caius feels there is. How precious, and how unfair, life is when trying to do the right thing. Everyone else he of course cares for, especially Lucanis! But Davrin as another Warden is his confidant when it coms to the scary shit, and he treasures that.
The Chariot: How does Rook fight? What are their preferred abilities and damage type? -Caius is a Rogue in that he prefers the tools of the trade, rather than has the absolute agility for the work. He likes the impersonal touch of distance, but his daggers are prized weapons. He will put himself on the line, but values having the option to hang back to mid or background range.
Strength: What gives your Rook courage? What inspires them to keep fighting? -Caius became a Warden because it felt noble. It felt like purpose. So when things get so absurdly bleak, he falls back into that noble art of 'someone has to do it'. He may not want to, or be able to, but he can try or find someone better than him. He wants to help people, he wants to give people a chance. He doesn't think it's being some knightly character - but he still fights like one. Because sometimes people need to see that someone else cares.
The Hermit: When Rook is alone with their thoughts, what do they think about? Is solitude a blessing or a curse for them? -Caius isn't perse haunted, but as a Warden he does have that background radio channel of the finite. He's aware of the taint in his blood, he's aware of the weight on his shoulders. He holds a veyr brave face when in battle and public, or even just with his team - but in private, he lets himself feel the pain. Thinks it'd be an injustice not to cry for the lost, or be angry for the injustice. So only in private, does he let the guard drop and feel everything raw and intensely.
The Wheel of Fortune: Describe an interesting character moment for your Rook. What made this moment stand out to you? -The Griffons. Caius grew up playing in old Warden Forts on the coast, being inspired by the few scraps of notes and books he found, but the imagery of the Griffon, this brave animal that just was good.... getting to see the first Griffon alive? It was the brightest most thrilling proof that he was in the right place at the right time.
Justice: How does Rook feel about the circumstances that led to them leaving their faction? What does returning feel like? -Caius is a bit infamous with the younger Ensigns and Initiate's for being a sort of role model - don't talk shit if you can't take shit back, but also don't let someone punch down on you. He knew damn well it'd get him into trouble, again, but the other option was to let innocent lives die, and to betray what he felt meant to be a Warden. He has no love lost for the Warden Commander, but also he despises people that get too complacent with the laws and rules.
The Hanged Man: What does Rook do when their hard work doesn't pay off? How do they cope with failure? -He puts all those big feelings into a bottle, he ties it to his belt and carries it with him through battle, through victory or inevitable loss. Then when he's alone, he throws so bottle as hard as he can and when it shatters so will he. Then, he makes new bottles. He uses what he learned from the defeat to temper the glass, what he learned in technique to weave ropes around the glass to hold it better. Every loss is a lesson.
Death: What part of Rook do they need to kill to become the best version of themselves? -Caius wouldn't like this question. He would honestly be upset if someone told him they killed a part of themself to survive further along. Which maybe, is the fault within. He wants to be actualized, he wants to have the purpose that makes sense. A life that's just...existing...may never be enough for him.
Temperance: What does Rook do to deal with the stress of their situation? -Talk. Talk, yap, laugh. He finds company and he settles in for telling stories, listening, playing music or singing off key. He needs people to destress, because being alone means his head gets a little too loud.
The Devil: What type of demon is most likely to target Rook? Why? -Oh this is tricky. Maybe something in the same vein of 'Obsession'. He lingers on things, on the past, trying to be better means he doesn't let some stuff go. He isn't one to be tempted by desire, or vengeance, but maybe something promising retribution could sway him.
The Tower: How does Rook respond to unexpected catastrophe? -To quote, "We survived before, we will again" but honestly, he's quick on adapting. He's got back up plans, he got maps, ledgers, and takes stock of inventory. He is not a man to go into anything without prep - so when shit hits the fan out of left field, he maybe gets stressed but he buckles down and locks the hell in- tells himself to feel big about it later.
The Star: When things get dark, what gives Rook hope? -There is always something that makes someone happy. Be it sunrise, be it the first Griffon in four hundred years, or ancient tomes, or dancing wisps, good coffee, giant lizards-- people have joy inherit to their soul and knowing that even the worse of us can be happy? It means there is always something to fight for. Even if he can't see his own happiness, he knows he can help protect someone elses.
The Moon: How does Rook's past impact their values? Does their past come with any biases or blind spots they have to account for? -Caius has some Big Feelings about his past, but it doesn't exactly hold him back - it instead gives him an edge, or so I like to think. He knows what life is like in Before's and After's. He knows the struggle of being a man, a woman, and inbetween. He has perspective, and he tries hard to use it to be compassionate, which makes him a better person. He thinks everyone deserves to have their own opinion- but maybe some people really shouldn't get to voice it so vocally...
The Sun: What is Rook passionate about? How do they fuel that passion? -People. The World? Caius wants to see it all, to understand it all. Only as an outsider, a bystander, or witness - he'd be thankful to see how someone else does it. He loves People, loves their quirks and their weird curiosities. He loves how impatient some people are, or how steady others can be. Caius believes in the rich tapestry of Life and he will diligently experience it as much as he can, traveling and reading and just quietly watching.
Judgement: How does Rook approach difficult decisions? How do they cope with the consequences of those choices? -Caius will use his heart in regards to his own issues, but with other people he shuts it down and uses his most objective and logical choice. EX: Treviso or Minrathous... he feels horrible he couldn't save both. But to him, Minrathous is a literal war state with experience of siege for over three hundred years, Treviso is a merchant canal with no army, no experience, and no help coming... it was a clear choice to him, but the weight is one he carries. In the end? It's almost a relief to know that both cities would have been changed, but he at least saved Treviso from the worst...he saved one of them.
The World: What does happily-ever-after look like for Rook? Is it attainable, or just wishful thinking? -There will come a day, that Caius can no longer fight the Calling. A day where he will be plagued, and reminded of the trade off he made. Until then, he wants to travel. He wants to take the good fight to the world, to help people, to live amongst them. If he gets to have two handsome men at his side, well that's one hell of a bonus. It's a relief, sadly, to know he won't be alone in the end. That Davrin will be there with him. And it's a joy to have Lucanis till then, showing them both how to find pleasure and joy in the darker parts of life. So, until the end, he will seek the world, and offer himself to it. He will leave behind a better world for him having been in it, and he will one day die fighting for it.

WHEN YOU KNOW, YOU KNOW — Paige Bueckers x Teammate! reader
summary — Paige finally realizing that she fell for her best friend after the win against usc :)
warnings — none, super cute
note — first post, so scared.. literally just thought of this out of nowhereee, send requests tho!!
wc — 1.9k
It’s your senior year at Uconn, your last season and opportunity to win the natty you’ve been chasing since you were a freshman. You’d worked so hard all throughout the season, determined to make it to the NCAA Championship finals.
After the season you’d had so far, things were looking great for the team. Your team worked amazingly together, on and off the court. Especially you and Paige, an unstoppable duo, which was a title you embraced.
It was the Elite Eight, a game that would decide if you made it to the Final Four or not. The game was against USC, a team just as good as your own.
They put up quite the fight, wanting the win just as bad as you. It was a close game, but with only three seconds on the clock and being up by seven, you knew you’d won.
You can hardly hear the buzzer that announces the end of the game, your teammates and Uconn fans already screaming.
You’re not even thinking when your feet automatically carry you towards Paige, throwing yourself into a hug. She’s screaming too, wrapping her arms around you while jumping excitedly.
You’d wanted this so bad, but if there was one person who wanted it more than you, it was her.
Paige has had it rough throughout her years at Uconn. She missed a good bit of her sophomore season after fracturing her tibia, and then missed all over her junior season due to tearing her ACL.
Her ACL recovery journey was not easy, you witnessed it firsthand. It took longer than the usual recovery did, but she never gave up. And this season, she jumped right back in, like she was never injured to begin with.
She was so strong, one of the millions of things you admire about her. In fact, you might have a tiny crush on the girl, who happened to be your best friend.
A tiny crush that she was completely oblivious to.
It wasn’t that you purposefully tried to show it, but you weren’t exactly discreet. The whole team had found out about it, constantly teasing you to no end. Whether it was the way you’d stare at her when she wasn’t paying attention, or the blush that would coat your cheeks when she hugged you an extra long second.
It was obvious to everyone but her. So obvious that fans had noticed and started shipping you with her. You would never tell a soul, but sometimes you’d watch ship edits, cheesing at the clips.
The edits made it look like she almost liked you back. Almost.
Others would agree that she was just as equally infatuated with you, but you couldn’t see that. Neither could Paige honestly.
She’d never taken the time to think about your friendship and how it was basically equivalent to a relationship. No, you guys were never intimate sexually but you were in almost every other way. Hell, you’d been sleeping in each other’s bed for the past six months (something Nika thought was so weird.)
Still, no lines were ever crossed the way you’d honestly hoped. So, you tiptoed on the line between but never said anything as long as she didn’t.
You realize how long you’ve been holding her, growing warm in the face when Ice sends you a look. You pull away, moving to hug the rest of your teammates and join in on the celebration dance Kk started.
You all line up to give your ‘good games’ and pats on the back to USC before returning back to the court. You watch as Paige excitedly jumps, pushing Geno around and can’t help the smile that automatically makes its way on your face.
Some interviewers pull a few players aside, Paige included, leaving you to comfort a crying Nika.
For the sake of pictures, team management passes out your shoot-around shirts to put back on along with a matching cap. You all mingle around the court, waiting for the trophy to be brought out.
To add on to the celebration, confetti was set off, which you immediately start scooping off the floor to throw at Geno.
While Paige is still getting interviewed, she spots you and Geno, smiling at your antics. She doesn’t even realize the trance she’s in until she realized she had missed the question the interviewer asked, who was looking at her with an almost knowing smile.
Paige felt like she was looking at you in a whole new light. The gravitational pull she felt towards you, the need to be close to you. She never realized how much she thought about you, or how you were the first person she looked for in a crowded room. Only now does she realize.
“Uh, what’d you say? My bad, I zoned out,” she apologizes, shaking her head and looking back to the interviewer.
The interviewer repeats her question, watching as her gaze flickers back and forth between her and you. This time though, Paige manages to answer the question before saying her thanks and returning to join the team’s celebration.
Once the trophy is brought out, the team huddles up to take pictures with it.
You sit front and center in the middle, beaming at the camera with the trophy between you and Aaliyah. Nika, who was on the other side of you, moves to make an open space for Paige, who would complain if she wasn’t beside you. To show her appreciation, she gives Nika a side hug, mumbling a small thanks in her ear.
Paige instinctively wraps an arm around your shoulders, causing you to look at her and smile brighter.
Photographer’s stand in front of you, taking photo after photo. You look to the camera, feeling happier than you’d ever been.
Paige looks at the camera, for the most part, at least. Her eyes flicker to you again a few times, but she does her best to be professional.
After the team photos, photographers pull aside individual players for more photos. While you wait your turn, you stand around talking with Azzi and Caroline.
Paige returns from her individual photos, coming up behind you and grabbing your arm. She pulls you towards her, stealing you away from the current conversation you were in.
“Hi?” You say, but it comes out sounding like more of a question. Despite your confusion, you still smile up at her in a way that has her heart racing.
“You got somethin,” she mutters, reaching a hand up to your head. She carefully removes your cap, pulling at a piece of confetti tangled in your hair. “There.”
She holds up the piece of confetti to you, laughing softly. Before you can put your hat on properly, she flips it backwards and places it on your head, laughing even more.
“Paige, c’mon,” you groan, smacking her shoulder playfully. “Put it back!”
“But you look cute,” she protests, still laughing at you. “Okay, fine. Hold on real quick,” she says, pulling out her phone to, what you assumed, post on some social media platform and embarrass you.
“When did you even grab your phone?” You question her, because when did she find the time to retrieve it? She shrugs, smiling mischievously and continuing to unlock her phone.
It didn’t matter that there were plenty of photographers all around, along with cameras recording the interaction. She wanted the picture to herself.
You stare at the camera with an attempt at a blank expression, but with Paige staring at you the way she was, like she was completely and entirely in love with you? You couldn’t help cracking a small smile.
She looks at the picture for a moment, still smiling, which was causing her cheeks to hurt, before tucking her phone in the pocket of her shorts.
You continue to glare at her, waiting for her to fix your hat. She sighs, rolling her eyes before taking the hat off your head again.
This time, she flattens any stray hairs sticking out, wiping at one on your forehead. She places the hat back on your head the way it was originally, patting your cheek teasingly.
“All better, yeah?” She smirks, her gaze shifting down to your lips before back up to your eyes.
You quirk a brow at her, noticing her wandering eyes, telling her without words that you caught her. She doesn’t say anything either, raising her brows in amusement, putting her hands up in fake defense.
Before you can say anything back, you’re being called for your individual photos.
“Be back,” you turn to her, sending a sarcastic smile before turning on your feet. You don’t look back, trying to save yourself from adding to the heat on your face, but you feel her eyes on you.
“The editors are gonna have a field day with this,” Paige turns at the sound of Kk’s voice, rolling her eyes and pushing her away.
“You’re dumb,” she shakes her head, trying to play it all off. The blush on her cheeks said otherwise though.
“What? I’m keepin it real, you got caught lackin!” Kk snickers to herself, stopping when Paige sends her a ‘shut the fuck up’ look.
Finally, after all the photos, the team heads into the locker room. You were obviously tired from the game, but could still feel the adrenaline pumping from the win.
You’re packing up your bag, throwing a hoodie on over your jersey and slipping on your Uggs. The team slowly files out, leaving just you, waiting on Paige.
She decided to shower in the locker room bathroom, which you now realized you should’ve forced her to wait until you were home. You know how long it takes her to shower, yet you still agreed.
“You ready to go?” Paige emerges from the bathroom at least half an hour later. She’s dressed in a hoodie and sweats, drying her hair with a towel.
“Finally,” you sigh, standing from the bench you were sitting on with a stretch. Normally, Paige would have a snarky response, but one never comes. You look at her, confused when she sends a half-assed (and forced) smile. “Something wrong?”
“Listen, I was wondering if we could talk?” She speaks up, sitting down on the bench. You don’t hesitate to sit beside her, reaching for her hand.
“Of course,” you say reassuringly, despite the anxiety spreading throughout you. When she doesn’t say anything after a moment, you turn to her again. “Did I do something?”
“No, I just.. I realized something today and I need to tell you,” she rambles, pausing to lick her lips and finally meet your eye. “I think.. I think I’m in love with you. Not in a friend way, like-“
You don’t let her finish her sentence, using your free hand to grab her jaw and kiss her. She doesn’t kiss back immediately, caught off guard by the sudden action. But when she does realize what’s happening, she’s quick to pull you closer to her.
You kiss her until you’re out of breath, pulling back and panting like you just ran a mile. You’re not sure what to do now, looking up at her sheepishly.
“Don’t get shy on me now,” she breaks a smile, breathless herself.
“Shut up,” you shake your head, feeling the heat creeping up your neck.
“So does this mean..” Paige trails off, suddenly lacking her confidence to finish the sentence. She would hate for all that to have happened just to get rejected.
“Yeah,” you nod your head, standing up from the bench. You hold your hand out for her to take, which she immediately does. “Can we go now?”
“Let’s go home,” she breathes out, slinging her duffel bag over her shoulder.
Just before you leave the locker room, she stops, grabbing your jaw to kiss you a second time.
“What’s that for?” You smile at her, tilting your head curiously.
“Just cause I can do that now,” she shrugs her shoulders, smiling proudly and wrapping an arm around your shoulders.

Crestfallen - Part 3
Author’s Note: I made up a lot of sicknesses/random things that have never been mentioned throughout the actual ACOTAR series! The breaks in text are going back and forth between the two rooms.
Overall Summary: Although you were born in the Day Court, you've been living in the Night Court for a century. You're close with the inner circle but what will happen when a new healer is brought into the picture?
Part 3 Summary: Clara has been found out, but what has she done to you?
Pairing: Azriel x Reader
Warnings: talks of injuries
"I'm sure I have no idea what you mean." Clara said softly, a small confused smile on her lips.
"When I asked you to help her, you said "I didn't do this one." What does that mean." Nesta snarled at the young healer.
Mor seemed deep in thought, Azriel and Cassian were equally confused, and Nesta seemed ready to pounce.
"Now that you mention it, I do remember hearing her say that." Mor spoke up.
"You better tell us what's up right now." Cassian growled.
At this point, Clara's smile faultered. She looked around for a way out but noticed the four of them had her surrounded and they wouldn't stop until they knew the truth. She may be evil but she wasn't dumb.
"It wasn't even that bad." The healer confessed.
"What have you done?" Azriel questioned, his voice deadly calm.
------
Madja had seen cases like yours before but never this bad. The cut on your back had traces of venom in it. A rare venom that used the victim's power against them.
She needed to extract every last ounce of it that was in your system but it was trickier than it sounded. If she took too much too fast, it could essentially tear your powers from your very being which would kill you.
"I need you to enter her mind. Once you are in, I will start to remove the poison from her system, you just need to let me know if her mind starts fading." Madja explained to Rhys.
"Are you sure this will work?" Rhys asked.
"Of course I am, boy. Now do as I say." She said quickly.
Rhys tried to enter your mind but all he could see was blinding light. There was no where for him to enter, it was almost as if the light was burning him. He pulled away, never feeling anything like it before.
"I can't get in, her light, it burns me." He explained to the healer.
"Listen to me. It might burn a bit but you will be fine. On the other hand, if we don't fix her right now her light will continue to burn brighter until it has consumed her. Perhaps we could get the shadowsinger in here to help." Madja told Rhys, hoping Azriel's shadows could help.
Rhys immediately spoke to Az through his mind and he appeared within seconds.
"What can I help with?" He rushed out his question.
"I cannot enter her mind, it is too bright, painfully so. Could you somehow use your shadows to help me get through?" Rhys explained the situation.
"I can try." Az responded.
------
Cassian looked towards where Azriel just stood, knowing he went to help you.
"I have no clue what's wrong with Y/N, honest. I swear I didn't think it would go this far." Clara pleaded with the group.
"You better start explaining before I unleash Nesta upon you." Cassian threatened.
Nesta had been eerily still, like a predator hunting her prey. Clara was visibly scared. Her hands were shaking, terrified of what Nesta would do to her.
"Ok listen. I've had a huge crush on Azriel for years now, so when I saw you guys needed another healer I took that as my opportunity." The "healer" explained.
"We've only known you for 2 weeks, how could you have a crush on him for years?" Mor asked.
"Everyone knows Azriel, the mighty shadowsinger, the feared spymaster of the Night Court. Well...when I met him all he wanted to talk about was Y/N. About how much I'd love her personality, how she's so great," Clara went on, "so I was a little jealous of her."
By this point, Mor was dissappointed she didn't believe you. She assumed you were exhausted from your mission and the guilt she felt was awful.
"When she showed up to my shop I got angry that she was back so soon. Rhys wanted me to do a check up on her and all I saw was a tiny cut on her back so I thought she'd be fine and I just wanted her to leave." She continued to explain.
Nesta was fuming by this point. Not only because of what she did to her friend but also because she didn't see through Clara sooner.
"Wait wait wait, all this is happening to Y/N because you're jealous of her? What kind of vile creature are you?" Cassian seathed.
"I didn't mean for any of this to happen-" She began to plead when Azriel appeared in the room again.
------
Rhys re-entered your mind, this time with Azriel's shadows being a protective barrier around him. It was way easier this time but he wasn't sure how long Az could hold it.
"Alright, start." Rhys told Madja.
The healer began her work. Unweaving the venom from your powers, from your soul. She was about halfway through when Rhys called out.
"STOP! I can feel her fading!" Rhys was panting, he was exerting all his energy.
Madja pulled out, confusion taking over.
"This doesn't make sense. It's as if another energy is pulling her powers. Like an untouched ball of energy using up the rest of her." She explained.
"What do we do?" Azriel questioned.
"It needs another energy form to pull from..." She started.
"My shadows." He whispered.
Before anyone could stop him he sent them out to you and that little ball inside of you immediately began to absorb them. He screamed out in pain and Rhys and Madja quickly began to work.
It took only a few moments more for Madja to finish yet it felt like an eternity for the two males. It had been way easier now that Az was distracting whatever it was inside of you. The venom was successfully extracted and the room was eerily quiet. Rhys and Az both fell back, feeling drained from using their powers in such a way.
"Why isn't she waking up?" The shadowsinger whispered, making his way toward you.
"It must have to do with whatever is deep inside her. I need to do a full body work up on her to see what is going on." She spoke and started right away.
Az felt a tear slide down his cheek and quickly brushed it away. The High Lord stayed back to give you space to be checked out but he felt the same as the male next to him, worried and hopeless.
It felt like an eternity when Madja spoke up again.
"There is a substance inside her nose. Almost like a powder but I haven't seen it before. I'll have to take it back with me to break the molecules down. I'm afraid Y/N will have to stay in this state for now." She told the two males.
Azriel's head shot toward Madja at her words.
"Wait, did you say a powder was in her nose?" He muttered.
She just nodded her head in response, holding up the sample she collected. Your words from earlier popped into his head.
"Y/N told me 'she blew some powder in my face which caused everything'." Azriel stated coldly and winnowed away.
------
The shadowsinger appeared in front of Clara, his shadows surrounding her and pinning her against the wall. She shrieked in either pain or fear but he didn't care. You were in danger and he would stop at nothing to help you.
"What did you blow in Y/N's face?" He demanded.
"What?!" She feigned innocence.
Azriel held up the vial of powder close to her face. His shadows squeezed tighter around her frame.
"It's nothing serious," She weezed out, "It's a mix of vamire, spitfire aconite, and root of igranium. All it's supposed to do is heighten the pain/sickness they already have. I had an antidote that I gave her. It's in my bag."
Mor quickly grabbed the bag from the female, searching for both the powder and the antidote. She handed them both to Az.
"And why would you posion her just to give her an antidote?" Cass asked.
"I wanted to impress Azriel." She whimpered looking down.
"What's in the antidote?" Az shouted at her making her flinch.
"A..Adlirin and G..G..Green Gilliflower." She sputtered in terror.
The shadows left along with their master and she fell to the floor.
------
"Both of these are in her system," Az spoke holding the vials, "Vamire, Spitfire Aconite, Root of Igranium, Aldirin, and Green Gilliflower."
Madja's eyes grew wide and a bad feeling shot through both Az and Rhys at her reaction.
"This isn't good." She said, looking over your unconscious form.

Kissing on New Years - SKZ OT8
Little drabbles of how I think skz would kiss reader during New Years! and yes MDNI18+ as always. no warnings idc to put any. happy New Years!!!! (divider from @/strangergraphics)
CHAN!
"Babe! Come on! You're going to miss it!" You looked to see your boyfriend with his headphones on, typing away at the computer. He didn't hear you, and though you know better than to disturb his work, this is an emergency. You run over to him, 10 seconds on the clock. You can hear the people from the television counting down. You and Chan didn't have the opportunity to travel for the New Year, but you don't mind missing out on New York. You're with Chris. That's what matters. Seven seconds. You rip the headphones off, not surprised to hear him let out a sound of surprise and turn to you. "What!" You tuck the headphones into your chest and grin, jumping excitedly on your feet. Chan stands and looks confused, but he soon hears the chanting on the TV. Five! Four!... "No way! I thought it was-" "Just kiss me!" One! It's rushed. The clank of teeth makes you wince, but you wrap your arms around his neck to pull him deeper. He smiles against your eager lips, wrapping his arms around your torso and lifting you off the ground. When you pull away, the sounds of firecrackers sound on the TV and you're sure can hear you neighbors shouting with joy. "Happy New Year, baby." "You almost missed it." "N-I didn't though!"
MINHO!
"Should I wake up the cats?" Minho stares at his sleeping, feline brothers. "I don't want them to miss it." You wrap your arms from behind, peeking from the side of his shoulder. "I dunno. They look kinda cute like that." Your lover hums in agreement, turning around so you're hugging him properly instead. "I think you're right." The two of you giggle before you hear clatter in the living room. "Kids! You're gonna miss it!" You can hear his mom. "We got only seconds left!" Seconds!? You and Minho share a look before rushing to the living room. His parents are already standing and holding each other with their gaze on the TV. They've got matching sweaters on and noise makers in their hands. You have a quick vision of how you and Minho will be when you're older. "Mom! I thought you said we had five minutes!" "No! Five seconds!" It's all so quick. The playful arguing from Minho and his mom to his dad trying to get his wife's attention. You can't even intervene before the clock strikes midnight and the television erupts in cheers. Happy New Years! It's like a switch in Minho. His banter stops and suddenly, you're the only person in the room. "Happy New Years." His voice is so quiet, like a secret only between the two of you. You whisper back and kiss him, but only quickly. It's still enough to feel the softness of his lips and to feel his smile. His parents laugh with joy, making you two pull away. "So when are you gonna get down on one knee, Jagiya?!"
CHANGBIN!
He's wearing those 2025 glasses. His big eyes peer right into yours, curls sticking to his forehead in a way that makes him a million times are sexy. You want to be mad, but you can't even pretend, "You ruined it!" Changbin's beautiful eyes widen. "You- I- How did you expect me to last that long!?" You have to keep from laughing. All of it was your idea anyway. You thought it would be funny to enter the New Year with Changbin shooting cum, but he couldn't last enough. Now you two are playfully arguing in the backyard with seconds left in 2024. "And-and it's cold! And we're outside!" "In the backyard!" You open your arms to display the scenery. "No one was gonna see me edge you!" Changbin shushes you. "S-stop being so loud!" You want to shout even louder just to see him panic, but you hear the booms of firecrackers. You're lucky that Changbin's place isn't too far from the Han River. You two watch as the stream of smoke bolts in the sky, and in just two seconds of delay, it explodes into colors with a loud boom! "Oh my god!" Changbin points in the sky. "Look! Look! Look!" You are looking, but at something so much brighter than any firecracker. More go off. They light up the dark sky beautifully, but the way the colors dance on Changbin's face is incomparable. You smile, "Happy New Years, Binnie." Changbin turns to you, already smiling and opening his strong arms. "Mhm. Another year with my love. Come here." And you do, and when you kiss, you think it's sweet. It's softer than usual, wetter almost. But you like the warmth you two create in the chilly night. Changbin pulls away, eyes wide. "Oh. I forgot I came in your mouth." Oh, that's why it feels like that. "You don't wanna kiss me?" "I never said that."
HYUNJIN!
There's so many people. Too many people. Times Square was always packed when you watched it on TV, but being here, you didn't really understand how bad it gets. Hyunjin's holding onto you tight. People are shoving, trying to get closer to the Ball that will drop in seconds. People are shouting, screaming, crying, and you're trying to wrap your arms around Hyunjin's neck. "This sucks." Hyunjin mumbles so they don't hear him, but you don't think they could even if he shouted it. You want him to have a good time despite you feeling the same, so you manage to smile up at him. "We're in New York, babe. Don't act too surprised." He grins at you, then looks up to the Ball. "Look." You turn and see the giant clock ticking down. 3...2...1 HAPPY NEW YEAR And despite the massive crowd and ear-bleeding screams, you're right you want to be. Hyunjin grips your chin, forcing you to look at his beautiful face. You've always though your lover was ethereal. His nose curved cutely at the tip and his jaw was so strong, but the juxtaposition made it work perfectly. And his lips sit lovely on his face, shiny from the way he was swiping his tongue over him. Neither of you speak a word, but the deep look into each other eye's says it all. He leans down gently, placing his lips on yours like there aren't a million other couples doing the same. And he's so warm. So endearing on your mouth that tears prick your eyes. You glide against his lips, easily slipping your tongue out so he can suck it into his mouth. He groans at your taste, hands digging deeper into your waist possessively. You lean back more, letting his own tongue invade your mouth and swipe gently against yours. Your hands travel to his buzzed hair, feeling the smoothness against your fingertips. Yeah. There's nowhere else you'd rather be.
HAN!
"Where's my baby! Where's my baby?!" He's screaming for you. Everyone at the party looks in his direction, confused and slightly worried. You rush to Han's side. You told him you were going to get a drink, but you underestimated how close midnight was and how drunk your lover is. "Oh my- I'm so sorry." You sheepishly look at the people trying to make room for you. "He's drunk and- Han! I'm right here!" His eyes are crossed and unfocused, but once he sees you, it's like he sobers for a second. Only a second. "Clock. 3-2-1." He points to a wall that does not have a clock. "Happy New Year?" You're stuck between laughing and crying. Chan told you he would keep an eye on Han while you refilled your cup, but once the girls starting rolling in, he had other plans in mind. "Yes, Han. Like, 10 more seconds." You're grabbing onto him for safety reasons. Your arm is looped with his, grabbing onto his jacket to act a leash in case he decides to stray away. Yet, it seems like all of that is unnecessary since he's putting all his weight on you. "Love you sooo much. You're my baby, you know that? Like forever." You're opening your mouth to tell him, yes you know, and that he should probably get some fresh air, but the party erupts in cheers and screams. No fucking way. Han's eyes widen. He's thinking the same thing. "We-we missed it!" You see his eyes get wet. "I-I can't kiss you until next year." Why did you have to fall for an idiot? "Yes you can. It's been like, two seconds." He's still pouting. "But...But I wanted-" You reach on your tippytoes and pull him down, cutting his words off with a kiss. Han muffles against you for a moment. As if it takes time for his brain to register that you're kissing. When it does, he swoons. His arms wrap around your neck and he leans further down, uncaring how his tongue messily licks onto your lips. The booze settles on your tastebuds immediately. You're not one for beer breath, but Han's taste and your own buzz makes it pleasant. He looses his balance quickly with his eyes closed. You have to plant your feet steady on the ground to keep the two of you up. You push him away by the shoulders and when you think you'll see confusion on his face, you see utter bliss instead. "Oh hell no." You know better than to fall for his sultry eyes and biting lip. "We're going home."
FELIX!
He's ready. Felix has been sat on the couch, staring at the TV for half an hour. He even set alarms to make sure neither of you miss when the clock strikes midnight. You're in the kitchen, cutting yourself a piece of his infamous brownie when another alarm rings. You try not to groan. "Felix, I really don't think you need-" "It's the last one! One minute, baby! Oh shit, I have to record this." You emerge from the kitchen to see him fumbling with the phone, shutting off the alarm and opening his camera app. He points the lens at you, dark hair peeking from above. "Any last words before the New Year?" You slow your steps, pursing your lips in thought. "Mmm... Fuck." Felix giggles. He puts the down a few inches to look at you directly. "I can't post that on TikTok." You laugh, finally making your way to the couch and setting the goodies on the center table. Felix follows right behind you, still clacking on his phone until you hear it shut off. Lithe arms wrap around your waist, turning you until you're faced to Felix. His dark hair falls over his eyes innocently with an adorable smile on his face. He looks unbelievably content celebrating New Years in your tiny apartment. Guilt twist in your heart. You want to apologize, but dozens of alarms go off before you can open your mouth. Felix's smile widens. "Happy New Year!" You laugh, both annoyed and amused at the alarms that play horribly in-sync. Felix chuckles only for a moment before tilting his head down, catching you off guard. His lips are gentle. You don't think you've felt him kiss you this softly in months, but you welcome it all. His lips barely contact yours and you eagerly push forward. He smiles against you, molding his mouth onto yours how you want. You pull away only to kiss at a different angle, holding his bottom lip longer than you're supposed to before letting it go and doing it again. Felix groans a little. His small hands bunch your shirt, pulling you closer. He looks devastated when you pull away. You shake your head, lips wet and tingling. "I can't stand these alarms. I think I'm going crazy."
SEUNGMIN!
It's really hard to keep your hands to yourself, and not in a sexual sense. He just looks so good. His hair is done up, pushed back to show his forehead with a white, puffy jacket over him. You can see every breath he exhales, every beautiful strand of hair under the moonlight, and how Seungmin wrinkles his nose every time he hears the loud chatter of people. "Sorry." He rubs his hand over yours, intertwining your fingers and finally letting you get a feel of his skin in this cold night. "This was the only spot I could find." Seungmin spent weeks looking for a secluded spot on the Han River. There's some passbyers, some children running with kites flying high in the sky, and the smell of baked goods not too far. The two of you sit on a blanket, a basket of fruits and drinks beside you. You lean on his shoulder, using your other hands to place it on his knee. "It's perfect. Thank you, baby." He turns to look at you, tilting his head and smiling like you're a million stars. You glance to his lips, already leaning forward and closing your eyes. You think you're going to feel his mouth, but you feel the palm of his hand instead. "Not yet." Not yet?? "But...but I want to kiss you now." Seungmin grins wider, teeth shinning and cutely scrunching his nose. "The new year is almost here. Just wait." You throw your head back dramatically, tugging on his fingers impatiently. "Noooo. Now." 10! You can hear the people nearby counting down in unison. 9! 8! 7! You straighten back up, looking wide-eyed at your boyfriend who's been looking at you the entire time. Seungmin leans in only to touch your nose with his. He's so infuriating. You try to sneak a peck in. Your pursed lips are met with air from Seungmin's quick reaction. He laughs and you don't understand how he can. The last few seconds feel tortuous. A whine is builds in your throat, but the screams and cheers make you stop. HAPPY NEW YEAR! You tackle Seungmin onto the grass. He goes down with a yelp and grabs your hips, bringing you with him. He can't even look confused before your lips are on him, kissing his lips repeatedly so the gentle smacks echo quietly between you two. And the sound is drowned out by the fireworks. You're sure they look pretty, bright and colorful dancing in the night sky, but Seungmin's lips are better than any gunpowder. He laughs in your mouth, mumbling about how he wants to see the firecrackers and that the grass is wet, but he holds onto you tighter and kisses you deeper. His head tilts, his mouth opens and you get a taste of how eager he had being wanting to kiss you too. Seungmin was just better at controlling himself. He has to be the one to pull away, lips plump and wet with spit. His face is flushed and you can see how hard he's breathing. "I love you. So much." Your hands plant on the grass besides him, and sure enough, it is wet. The muddy texture is hardly for concern when you lean down again, pecking his lips, nose and eyes. "I love you too. Happy New Years." "Happy New Years. Um..." His eyes look panicked when you look at his face. "I think there's a worm in my ear."
JEONGIN!
The drinks were supposed to loosen everyone up for the night. Han gets anxious in big crowds, Chan constantly feels the need to keep an eye on everyone, Felix just enjoys fruity drinks, and the rest are pretty much down to drink at any given time. But Jeongin? Jeongin gets hot. The clothes on his skin feels too tight and the dress on yours definitely is. He was already on you when you walked into Hyunjin's apartment, but the moment the jungle juice was half-way gone, he was asking to finger you in the corner of the room. Which brings you to now. The feel of his soft hair between your legs with his even softer tongue on your folds. The thudding of music and hollers vibrate through the wall, all the way to the second floor where Jeongin has you. You're not quiet, you never can be when his expert tongue runs over you. But with the loudness from the first-floor, you don't find any reason to lower your voice. You thought he wanted a quickie. A fast tug on the side of your underwear and the unbuckling of his belt, but Jeongin lead you to the bedroom rather than the bathroom and lifted your dress high. The material is bunched at your mid, breasts free and legs open. His long fingers peak at your nipples, twisting and pulling until your moans turn into squeals. And his tongue keeps digging into you. Thrusting itself in and out before swiping your arousal over your clit. Jeongin can feel your hips thrust every time he does it, so he stays sucking on your sensitive bud until you wrap your thighs around his neck. He groans, loving how your smell swallows him whole. Jeongin bruies his face deeper until his nose bumps your clit, swiping his tongue lower to collect your juices. You know you're cutting off his air circulation, but neither of you seem to care. Jeongin seemed perfectly happy with the possibility of his death being between your legs, and you seem okay burying him there. A harsh pinch to your nipple makes you cry. You lift your head and widen your legs just a bit, hearing him deeply inhale before sticking his tongue out again. " 'm so sensitive, Jeong. You're gonna make me cum again." Jeongin opens his eyes. You love the wild look in them. How they look stuck between desire and chaos. You've always loved the slenderness of them. Even now, wide, blown-out, and almost terrifying, it makes you drip onto the sheets. On a bed that isn't even yours. He moans, nodding and unable to say anything. He never speaks when he eats you out. Your taste is all too consuming. They're getting louder below, shouting and screaming so violently that you can barely make out what they're saying. Jeongin is the one the make it out first. He pops off your pussy quickly, a loud smack resonating in the room. You moan in loss, closing your legs in overstimulating and panting. The room quickly quiets from your lack of whining, but at least you can hear your friends below. Happy New Year! No way. No fucking way. How could you forget the whole reason you two went to Hyunjin's place? Jeongin runs a hand through his hair, face shinning in your wetness. "He's gonna be pissed." Hyunjin? "B-because we're on his bed? I'll wash the sheets and-" "No! Hyunjin asked me to be his New Years kiss and I said yes and- fuck! Why did I say that?!" You can't even laugh. Pleasure is still drumming in your veins and your half naked. "Wha-" "JEONGIN?? AYEN-AH?? JAGIYA?!" Now you laugh, but it's mixed with panic. I’m making an educated guess:
The two on the left are “fine” because they’re the most similar-looking out of the four total. The only distinguishable difference is the loop on the end having a variable height/length; they do however both have an upward then downward swoop, which makes me think it’s habitual. A case could be made that the size of the J is a bit larger/taller on the bottom one. They otherwise look the identical to me.
This is where things get tricky, because of the two remaining here are the differences I notice:
Top right: taller J shape similar to bottom left — so is this the one that is actually fine, with bottom left? But no, because it also has a noticeable starker upwards/downwards contrast more like a point than curve, followed by a shorter fading loop. This gives me the impression that it’s an outlier. It could honestly also be a “fine” pair with top left, or as aforementioned bottom left.
Bottom right: this one sticks out the most because the bottom of the J doesn’t line up. The curve and loop however closely match top right, if not for top right’s point and bottom right’s layered J tail.
All of this in consideration, I come back to thinking that the two on the left are “fine.”
Because it’s the most visually different, I think bottom right is “bad.”
Top right is “good” because it adheres to having a singular J, and it’s most significant difference is the point — which in isolation you wouldn’t even register as being different from any of the other signatures.
What this comes down to is John’s personal perception of whether the pointy loop or overlapped J is worse/better than the other.
And yes I did get out my signed copies of Turtles and Anthropocene to cross reference those signatures to the four pictures. Peculiarly, both are a smidge pointy, which — again — leads me to believe that top right is “good” if we factor in that both my signed copies were signed with less pain impact.
As a plot twist though, Anthropocene also has a spiral — which could mean John was feeling proud of that one and added to its magnificence, or he thought that one was bad and added a spiral to make up for it. Or maybe all of Anthropocene had spirals.
tl;dr maybe the real signatures were the sharpie fumes we inhaled along the way. Maybe sometimes the color is Intergalactic Indigo because the author likes Intergalactic Indigo.
I look forward to John telling me how wrong my analysis is.
P.S. for good measure here’s my works cited.
P.P.S. this is all in the name of engaging with art and to John specifically if you happen to actually read this I hope I didn’t give you new things to feel self-conscious about. I had fun analyzing. The signatures are great. You’re doing a good job.
Tell me the truth: Can you tell which of these signatures is good, and which is terrible? (Two are fine.)
Like, if you get one of these signatures bound into a copy of Everything Is Tuberculosis, will you be disappointed? Or do they all look approximately the same and I've just spent way way way too much time looking at my own signature?
(You can preorder a potentially terrible signature at http://everythingistb.com.)

“I’m bored.”
Luke hadn’t thought he would regret staying at home when he had told Jack he wasn’t feeling well enough to drive out to Detroit for the Zach Bryan concert - if anything, it was an effort to push him and Ellie a little closer. She took Luke’s place, roomed with Jack in their hotel and everything, and they seemed to be having the time of their lives in all the videos dispersed into the group chat. But that was all before he came downstairs, eyes on the pictures of the all-you-can-eat breakfast the group were partaking in before coming back, and opening the kitchen cupboards to see them bare, with a few protein bars and boxes of granola tossed in like they’d been ransacked for the apocalypse.
He’d had fun last night, though.
Even after the movie had ended, when the two of you had stayed up on the couch, talking about life - about hockey, about school, about his brothers, about your mom - if he’s honest, it had been the closest he had felt to another person that wasn’t one of his brothers in a really long time.
He really felt like you were connecting.
So much so that he’d retired to his bed for the first time all summer with a big, dopey grin on his face. Had laid awake scrolling through astrological compatibility after the two of you had drifted onto that topic after the movie finished, talking for maybe two hours before you had yawned so big he thought you might swallow him whole.
He had thought he knew you, before.
Had thought that those brief observations made from back in college, about your coffee preferences, your perfume collection, your taste in music, had painted a somewhat blurry picture of who you were - of all the things that blended together to formulate you - but he had been so wrong.
And he had laid in bed last night thinking much deeper about the girl who was laying only a couple rooms down the hall - a few walls away.
The girl who had come downstairs, bare feet padding softly into the kitchen, and had poured out two glasses of juice and handed one over to him without even asking.
“Hi Bored, I’m Luke,” he smiles as he accepts the drink from your hand, the expression deepening as you roll your eyes back at him, this time with a glimmer of fondness slipping through the surface of your facade.
You reach past him into the cupboard for the box of granola, and he grabs one of the protein bars before closing it, your bodies moving around each other in tandem like a well choreographed routine - easy and effortless in a way that calms whatever nerves he might have had around this new development in your relationship being one-sided.
You had never seemed uncomfortable in the house, or around the rest of the guys, but you had never been like this.
“I was thinking,” you drag out, voice sweet and alluring, like you even have to put it on to convince Luke of anything, “we could go out on the boat,” you glance back at him as you pour out your cereal, lashes fluttering to complete the act, “You have your license right?”
“Yeah,” he replies, settling himself down to lean at the kitchen island as you cross to the other side, taking one of the stools, “But I’m not really supposed to take it out on my own.”
You hum as if you’re thinking, crunching your food before asking, “Is that brotherly advice or is that the law?”
“Advice, I guess,” he shrugs, pushing forward ever so slightly onto his forearms, where he can feel the tense of his muscles, and can see the diversion of your attention.
“And you always do what your brothers tell you?”
When you tilt your head, the sun shining through the kitchen window reflects on your irises, making them sparkle, and he can see all the different hues in there, as if you’re using the elements to try hypnotise him into compliance.
You’re so pretty, you don’t even need the special effects.
“I’m a good boy,” he smiles teasingly, with a tilt of his own head, driven by infatuation and admiration, keeping your gaze and trying not to shudder visibly when your eyes drop to his lips.
“You wouldn’t be on your own, though,” you pout, “I’d be there. I was a lifeguard for the past three summers, you know.” Of course he knows. “I promise I’ll save you if you get thrown overboard.”
You don’t have to say the following sentiment that the two of you share - that if he were to be thrown overboard, it would undoubtedly be by your own hand.
“Yeah, you’d give me mouth to mouth?”
You scoff, leaning down onto your forearms and mirroring his position, careful not to knock your bowl. “Unfortunately for you, Hughes, they don’t advise the use of that method, anymore.”
“And you always do what people tell you?”
It’s one of his favourite things to do with you, he’s noticed - turn the tables, use your own wit against you. It gets him a reaction, every time. A rush of something real that washes over you, has you fixing your shoulders and biting back a smile.
Although you don’t bite this one back. Luke doesn’t think that you could, even if you tried. Your eyes even crinkle a little in the corners, and Luke doesn’t see the danger in it - too lost in the way they reflect the glorious sunshine back at him in dazzling sparkles - until one drops in a wink as you retort, “I’m a good girl.”
Touché.
He thinks his heart might have skipped a beat. He can all of a sudden feel every last crumb of the previous bite he took from his protein bar lodged in his throat, and he needs a drink, so he pushes himself up from the counter to try at least gain a height advantage over you, and forces down some gulps of his juice.
The look you’re giving him isn’t doing him any favours - the height difference working against him as your eyes look up to meet his, round and pleading despite the cunning genius he knows is buried within them.
“Fine,” he huffs, rolling his eyes as your smile grows wider, “But we need to be back before my brothers so I don’t get a lecture.”
“Yes!” You squeal, pushing up from the stool, “I knew you weren’t as boring as you seem!”
He frowns, despite knowing you’re just teasing him for this exact reaction, and watches as you clean up your bowl, discarding of the mushy granola and rinsing it out.
“I just need ten minutes to get ready and then we can go!”
“You have five.” He grumbles, watching as you rush out the room and listening for the stomp of your feet up the stairs.
He’s probably going to regret this.
—
The bikini had been your first strike - baby blue, the type that ties with strings around your neck and back - when you had come down the stairs, the slap of your slides echoing against the wood and diverting his attention from his phone to your emerging figure. Your t-shirt was clutched in your hand, your tote bag in the other, and he had just stood there, mouth agape, until you rolled your eyes and stormed straight past him, calling, “Thought we were on a time crunch, come on,” behind you.
Your second strike had been the way you had waited until you were on the boat to apply your sunscreen, sat next to Luke, who was trying to keep a steady hand on the wheel as he drove his way down to a clear spot further out on the lake. Luke who was biting his tongue from offering to help you, and could smell the sweet melon scent of the lotion as it sank into your skin.
And the third had been the way you had been smiling down at your phone, distracting him with the pretty curve of your lips as he steered over the water.
Three such minor infractions already had him regretting the decision to bring you out here alone.
“Who’s got you smiling like that?” He asks, trying not to sound as jealous as he feels at the thought of it being another guy.
“It’s Cole,” you tell him, eyes still on your phone.
“You and Cole text?” The boat jolts slightly as his hands tremble, and he diverts his attention to you.
“No, he’s got Ellie’s phone.” You type something back before turning the device to show him a selfie Cole had taken in the hotel lobby, Jack asleep on one of the benches in the background and Ellie posing in front of his sleeping figure.
“Why’s Cole texting from Ellie’s phone?” Luke asks, eyes back on the water as he steers the boat, long fingers curled around the wheel and muscles flexing.
“They’ve been hanging out,” you tell him, “They were together when we got back from the club the other night, he was in our room.”
“And you’re only just telling me this now, because?”
“Oh, my bad, control freak, didn’t realise you needed the whereabouts of everybody in the house,”
“Jack’s been off all week,” Luke mutters, remembering his brother’s reaction when he had told him he was staying at home instead of going to the concert. He had called him out on staying home just to be around you, saying he’d regret missing out on such a huge experience, like there won’t be a hundred other concerts in his lifetime, and that you wouldn’t even appreciate him doing it. “Making all these passive aggressive comments,”
“No way! Jack Hughes? Passive aggressive?” You gasp, shuffling in your seat to give him more of your attention, “What next, is he gonna start acting like the world revolves around him too?”
“Don’t get cute,” Luke rolls his eyes. It’s starting to make sense, him chewing his ear off like that - even though the two of you had literally caught him out on a date, if he feels like Ellie is moving on with his best friend, he’s bound to feel some sort of way about it. “If they were together when he came home from that date, maybe he saw them,”
“They were hardly getting it on with the door wide open, Luke, they were playing cards.” You scoff, “Plus, he has no right to be upset, he was literally on a date he told nobody about.”
“He gets in his head about stuff like this,” Luke reasons as he slows the boat, bringing it to a stop in the middle of the water so he can focus, “Talks himself in circles until it makes him so dizzy he does something stupid.”
“You think that’s what he’s doing?”
“I don’t know, I don’t like assuming the worst of my brother, though.”
“Alright, let’s say Jack is only being a dick because he thinks Ellie and Cole are hitting it off,” you stand up now that the boat is steady, kicking your slides off and ambling over to the benches at the back, out from under the cover of the roof. “What are we supposed to do about it, we can hardly keep them apart, keeping track of Jack and Ellie is hard enough without throwing Caufield into the mix. He's sneaky.”
“We’d only technically have to follow Ellie, still,” Luke says as he follows you to the back of the boat, thankful your back is to him when you start to push your skirt down your legs, and you can’t see the way his eyes go three times their usual size, he’s almost anticipating a swat to his chest for when you turn and notice. “They can still hang out, just not one-on-one, one of us could keep an eye on them, take it in turns.”
“That sounds an awful lot like hard work, Hughes,” you huff, taking a seat on the leather bench and stretching your legs out before lounging back, “Can’t your brother just grow a backbone and ask her out? It would save us both a lot of hassle.”
“I’m working on it,” he throws himself onto the bench opposite yours, thinking of all the times he’s tried to cut the conversation with his brother short by just telling him to grow a pair. “I guess you’re right, we can’t stop them being friends, it would be hypocritical.”
“Hypocritical?”
“Yeah, ‘cause we’re friends.”
“You think we’re friends?”
“You don’t?”
“We watch one movie together and now all of a sudden you think we’re besties?”
“I think we’re friends ‘cause you like my company, you wouldn’t have asked me to bring you out here if you didn’t like being around me.”
“That’s ‘cause you’re deluded.” You smile, pushing your sunglasses down from the top of your head to the bridge of your nose and relaxing back. “I like tanning and being on the water. You’re a glorified chauffeur at this point. Not a good one, either.”
“I got us out here no problems, didn’t I?”
“I had to hold on the whole way, you were throwing me around like a loose can in the trunk of your car.”
“Yeah, well the water was choppy,”
“A good workman never blames his tools, Hughes.” You smile over at him, and the innuendo makes his cheeks go hot. Definitely regretting bringing you out on the water with no escape about now.
“Did you really ask me to bring you out here just to lay out in the sun?” He leans forward with his elbows on his knees, watching as you angle your neck to face him.
“Is that a problem?”
“It is if you’re gonna be a grouch about me being here.”
“I thought you’d be all quiet and brooding like you usually are.”
“Me?” He laughs, “Quiet and brooding?” He doesn’t think anyone has ever used the word quiet to describe him in his life. He knows you can’t be serious - all you’ve done for weeks is blast him for getting on your nerves.
“I’ve literally seen you talk once before this summer.”
What the hell do you mean by that? You barely knew who he was that day he approached you in the club.
“That’s ‘cause you’d have to notice me to see me talk.”
“You’ve never talked to me.”
He did talk to you. Several times, in fact. That day outside your dorm with Ellie’s gift basket, a couple times in class - but they’re all insignificant, minor exchanges of words he would quite like to forget, if he’s honest. Mumbling and stuttering and, quite frankly, embarrassing, to say the least. A far cry from the confident man he’d like to think he has become. “Why would I talk to you?”
“That’s rude,” you pout, and he straightens up immediately.
“No, I just mean, like,” he waves his arms out in between the two of you, gesturing over and shaking his head. “You’re you. We were never really on the same level for me to be talking to you.”
You bring your glasses back onto the top of your head, pushing your hair out of your face and squinting against the sun to level him with a glare. “Aren’t you a big time athlete?”
“I am now. You wouldn’t have given me the time of day back then.”
“You never gave me a chance to.”
“You could have approached me.” He thinks you’re just biting back for argument’s sake, if he’s honest - there isn’t a chance in hell you ever spared a thought for talking to him or giving him the time of day. You barely even looked his way - and he definitely would have noticed.
“So could you.” You frown.
“I tried once.” He distinctly remembers the one time he did approach you, away from class and apart from the first time he met you, dialled up with liquid courage and driven by the way you were dressed as a sexy Patrick Bateman, and he finally felt like having the right conversation starter around his love for American Psycho might have helped him kick something off with you, or at least got you to acknowledge his existence. He would have even taken you calling him Lu again. “At a Halloween party in Freshman year. You blew me off. I barely got a word out before you were storming off.”
“When you were dressed as Scooby Doo?”
His lips part and close repeatedly like a fish bobbing it’s mouth, blinking slowly at you as he realised just what you even having that memory meant. “That’s a weird thing to remember for someone not interested.”
“A giant dork in a dog costume is a pretty hard thing to forget.” You grin satirically, “I never said I wasn’t interested, you just caught me at a bad time and never tried again,”
“You wanted me to try again?”
“I want you to be quiet. Aren’t you due a nap or something?”
“You can’t seriously tell me you asked me to bring you all the way out here just to lie out in the sun and do nothing,” he groans, watching you return back to your previous position, body bathing in the sunlight and sunglasses pushed back down onto your nose.
“What, did you think we were gonna play mermaids?” He can’t see the roll of your eyes anymore, but he knows when it happens by now, just from your tone of voice.
“You can do that back at the house, we have loungers out by the pool,”
“It’s not as peaceful as this.” You sigh, “Plus, the trees around the back block the sun this time of day. I’m getting pale cooped up in the club all week, I have catching up to do.”
“What am I supposed to do?”
“Lay back and relax,” you advise, nodding toward the bench he’s perched on the edge of, reaching your hand down into your tote and blindly tossing the bottle of sunscreen in his general direction, “You could use some sun, too. And if you’re a good boy, I’ll let you do my back later.”
Luke, surprisingly, folds - doing as he’s told and lounging back into the leather, and he begrudgingly thinks a little too much about how right you are. This is peaceful. The soft whoosh of water against the boat, clear blue skies, no yelling or arguing or people competing around him. Just you, and the sunshine, and the smell of melon-scented sun lotion seeping into his skin.
It isn’t long before he drifts off, his head resting on his folded arm, the heat of the sun warming him like a blanket, and the last thing he sees before his eyes close is your head turned his way, lips parted slightly as you sleep, yourself, skin glistening and your chest rising and falling in deep, steady breaths.
When his eyes open again, you’re sat up, holding your hair up with one hand and fanning yourself with the other.
“What’s wrong?” He asks, voice thick with sleep as he sits up, his skin peeling uncomfortably off the leather.
“I’m hot.” You whine, turning to him with a pout.
He scoffs, resisting the urge to say something corny like, I know you are, before he points out over the side of the boat. “If you look to your right, there’s a large body of water you can cool down in.”
“I’m not getting in there!”
“Why not?”
“Lake monsters, for one,” you scoff, releasing your hair and he watches it fan out over your shoulders in soft waves.
“They’re only native to Scotland, I heard.” Luke stands, looking over the side and into the steady waters to gauge how safe it would be to go in without a vest. The water is still, he’s never had any problems in this part of the lake, and he’s confident the two of you could at least take a dip without there being any concerns - you were a lifeguard, after all, and he’s always been a strong swimmer.
“Aren’t there fish in here?” You ask, beside him now as you peer over the edge yourself.
“There’s actually a cool hack to check, do you want me to show you?”
You eye him sceptically but nod, anyway, and he holds his hand out to help you walk to the back of the boat, stepping down onto the stern where it’s easier to reach into the water.
You’re careful not to let him fall behind you, clearly cautious of the fact that he could push you in. Instead, he stands beside you, squats to reach down over the edge and run his fingers through the ripples that form. He stands back to full height and you squint to look up at him, the sun blaring from over his shoulder and reflecting off his sweat-slicked skin.
It makes your eyes sparkle again, and it’s almost enough to make him change his mind from what he’s about to do - only, before your powers of hypnosis can work on him for the second time in a matter of hours, he quickly grasps onto your hips and launches the two of you into the water.
He has the same misguided confidence he had when he squirted you with that hose - a burst of energy that he immediately succumbed to before he could think rationally about it, and it’s the same energy that forces deep and hearty laughter to rumble from his chest as you squeal on your way into the lake.
The two of you land with a big splash, and emerge simultaneously, you running your hands through your wet hair to push it back out of your face.
“What the hell did you do that for?”
“You said you were hot, I was trying to help!”
“You are so dead!” You exclaim, splashing him with a swat of your hand against the water.
“Oh, look, a fish!”
“Ew, no!” You yell, squirming forward to try and dodge it, unintentionally leaping right into Luke, the heat of his firm chest under your flattened palm, an arm curling over his shoulder to steady yourself.
His arms curl around your body by instinct, wrapping around your waist and holding you against him until you realise his trick, and your hands press on the top of his head until you’re pushing him under the surface with a yell of, “So dead!”
Laughter ripples out of him, from the pits of his stomach to the parting of his lips, and comes out in bubbles against your skin as you hold him down, your body thrashing to get away from his until you break free from his hold, and he rises back from under the water.
“Get back here, you’re not getting away with that!” He calls after you, launching himself forward to catch you.
“No,” you squeal, trying to gain momentum as you leap away, only for his arm to curl around your waist, pulling your squirming body back against him with a splash. “Let me go, you brute!”
“Tell me you’re having fun or you’re getting dunked,” he commands, lips beside your ear as your back is held flush to his chest, your skin still warm from the sun and smooth against his.
“You dunk me and I’ll leave your ass to the lake monsters,” you warn him, still squirming in his hold.
“Like you could drive the boat, you need me,” your body seems to still the lower his tone gets, succumbing to his hypnotising powers, and he can feel you square your shoulders against him.
“Yeah right,” even Luke can tell how much your denial is forced from the shiver down your spine, “Jack can do it, how hard could it be?”
“You’d really hijack the boat just to avoid admitting you like my company?” He asks as he lets you go, and you turn immediately in the water to face him. He tilts his head when your gazes meet across the water, and your eyes flicker between his as if trying to read him like a book.
“Today’s been nice,” you admit, with a dramatic roll of your eyes, “Last night, too. Not specific to your company. Just being away from everybody else."
“So that’s the key?” He dares to swim a little closer, just enough that you won’t notice him reducing the proximity between the two of you. “You wanna get me on my own?”
“You-,”
“Wish,” he finishes, your eyes meeting in a steady gaze despite the bobbing of your heads to stay afloat. He’d like to think it’s more than the water that has brought you back this close to him, legs kicking beneath the surface, his hands itching to hold back on your waist to help, “Yeah, I do.”
If he has managed to stay more or less in place while treading water, then it can’t be the current drifting you toward him, and you’re so close now that he could hold you, if his brain could just link to his hands to give them the courage to do so.
You like being alone with him - you’ve pretty much just admitted so - feel comfortable enough that you change your plans to fit him into them - just like you had last night - you wanted him to talk to you in college, you noticed him, even, enough to remember the fact that he never did.
There has to be some base level of interest there for you to be this close, in the first place. To move into his house, to agree to spend your summer in his company, to spending more time with him than he’s noticed you spending with your supposed best friend.
And just as he convinces himself of it, and his thoughts link to the movement of his hands underwater, inching closer to grip at your hips and pull you all the way toward him, a shrill ringing carries all the way from the boat to Luke’s ears, turning both of your attention back to the vehicle.
“Shit, that’s Jack’s ringtone.” He groans, “They’re probably back by now.”
The two of you swim back toward the boat, and he pulls himself up onto the stern before lending you a hand to get up, yourself.
There are a bunch of texts from his brother.
Where are you at?
Did the demon get you in your sleep?
Where’s the boat?
Please tell me you’re dumping her body and she’s not dumping yours.
You’re dead either way when you get back!
“Shit, we better get back,” he grumbles, rushing to the front of the boat to get it started again. Before you sit beside him, he feels the draping of a towel across his shoulders, and his heart thuds at the small smile you give him when his eyes meet yours.
“Sorry if I got you in trouble.”
“It’s fine,” he shrugs, nonchalant despite the rampant beating in his chest, and the thought of his brother chewing his ear off when the two of you get back. “You’re worth the headache.”
He winks, teasingly, and his eyes go back to the water before he gets the chance to see your cheeks flush. You’d probably just blame it on sunburn, anyway.
You don’t speak much on the drive back, but Luke can feel your eyes on him, can practically hear your mind whirring with a million thoughts - only because his is doing the same.
Why does he has to have a brother with the world’s worst timing?
He would have kissed you.
At least, he thinks he would have.
His hands were reaching out. He would have pulled you in by the hips, held you against him, raised so that your faces were finally level, and he would have made a move. He can feel it in his bones, still thrumming with almost-arrogance. A knowing, sure feeling that he can’t shake - one that tells him you would have kissed him back.
But he’ll never know, now.
When the two of you get back, Jack is waiting on the dock, and you gather your things before Luke helps you off the boat. He ushers you past his brother, knowing you’d be down to argue all afternoon, if necessary, but he can take this one on his own. He doesn’t want you hearing the sort of venom he knows his brother can spew out when he’s mad like this.
You brush past Jack on the edge of the dock, who thankfully waits until you’re back at the gate and out of earshot to start on Luke.
“What the hell are you doing? Have you lost your mind?”
“What, I’m not allowed to have fun when you’re not here?” Luke scoffs, rolling his eyes at his brother’s theatrics.
So he took the boat out, it’s really not that deep, he thinks. He’s an adult, he has his license, there really shouldn’t be a problem.
“I know you’ve seen Jennifer’s Body, you shouldn’t be out on the lake on your own with her,”
“Implying she’s a demonic serial killer might be a little over-dramatic, even for you,” Luke huffs as he starts to make his own way back.
“Trust me, it’s not.” Jack stops him with a hand gripping at his elbow. “Whatever trick she’s pulling on you, Luke, you need to wise up,”
“What the hell are you talking about?”
“She isn’t interested,” Jack tells him, “She’s using you to pass the time until someone better falls into her lap, and you’re falling straight for it. Letting her convince you to stay behind and miss hanging with the rest of us, taking the boat out on your own, don’t you think it’s weird how she never had any interest in talking to you before it started benefitting her? Before you made it to the big leagues?”
Luke narrows his eyes at his brother, shoulders slumping as the words seem to weigh on them, like a heavy towel draped across to dry him and rub away all the affections you had blessed him with over the past 24 hours.
But it isn’t Jack’s words that are ringing around his head, this time. It’s yours.
You never talked to me.
You never gave me a chance.
You never tried again.
Maybe you did have some level of interest before. Maybe his intuitions earlier had been right. Maybe it’s still there.
“It’s none of your business, Jack,” he grumbles, not allowing him a second to rain on this parade. “You don’t even know her.”
“Don’t come crying to me when she breaks your heart, then.”
“Trust me, I won’t.”
If you’re thankful for any rule at the house, it’s the rule for knocking before you come into any bedroom. Quinn knocks most mornings to let you know breakfast is being prepared, or before he goes on a store run to ask if there’s anything you or Ellie need. Jack knocks for Ellie, and now Cole does too.
You can always tell when it’s Luke though.
Repeated and incessant, a constant rapping of knuckles against the wood until you answer, instead of any sort of pattern or rhythm.
“Can I come in?” He asks as soon as you open.
“No.” You tell him every time, but to no avail.
“Thanks,” He swerves into the space beside you, careful not to shove past as he makes his way into the bedroom. “We have a problem.”
“Yeah, they’re called boundaries, Hughes.” You scoff, slamming the door and following him. “You can’t just waltz in here like you own the place.”
“I do.” He frowns, “Own the place. This is my house."
“Your brothers own it, actually.”
“What are you, Michigan Census Bureau?” You mimic the words back to him, your face scrunched tight and your voice as whiney and annoying as it can go, and he pushes his hand in your face, just light enough to cover it and not actually smack you because he doesn’t have a death wish. “The problem. You have to focus,” he clicks his fingers in front of you, and you swat his hand away with a frown.
“Click at me like a dog again and I’ll bite your fingers off.” The look on your face is one he should probably fear, but there’s a nagging instinct he can’t fight to keep pushing your buttons. He doesn’t know where it comes from, but it feels wrong to ignore.
“Is that supposed to turn me on?”
“The problem, Luke, get on with it.”
“Right.” He sighs, throwing himself down on the bed, “I can’t find Cole and Ellie anywhere. I think he took her out.”
“What?” You reach forward and push at his shoulder, “You had one job, Hughes!”
It had been his turn to take watch, as the two of you had agreed the other day out on the water, but it was really starting to get tiring, having to play third wheel to a situation he really didn’t understand, and he needed a recess. Five minutes just to recuperate, he didn’t expect them to make a break for it so quick.
“I left to make a sandwich! I’m allowed to eat, you can’t expect me to starve it goes against my rights!”
“You’re such an idiot,” You scoff as you rush toward the closet to find something to wear, your plans of a self-care day now flushed down the toilet thanks to Luke’s insatiable appetite. “You couldn’t watch them for an hour without succumbing to malnutrition?”
“Why can’t you be on watch for once?”
“I was doing my nails,” You retort, wiggling your freshly painted fingernails in his face, crimson red to match your toes, and the colour Luke feels his cheeks turning at the sight of them. “Because thanks to someone the gel started lifting after spending my entire afternoon the other day with my hands in a soapy bucket.”
“You’re the one who took the detour to beat Jack home and got my car all dirty.”
“Whatever, turn around.” You’re already lifting your tank over your head before Luke gets the chance to comply, his mouth falling agape before he can control it at the sight of you stood in just your bra and pyjama shorts in front of him. The instruction only registers when your tank top hits him in the face, dropping into his lap so he can look up at your scowl and swivel in his place on the bed. “They’re probably at the mall, she was saying she wanted to go to the art supply store there.”
“So what, we’re gonna just bump into them? Won’t they think it’s weird we’re showing up there after we both said we were staying in today?” He tries not to look into the corner of the room, where he knows the mirror placed there will show him the reflection of you changing - although what’s the use in hiding anything, now? He’s already seen it.
He’s also seen you in your many different bikinis over the past few of weeks. Has been up close and personal, even, holding your body against his out in the lake.
But your bathing suits aren’t slightly sheer and frilly around the edges, and don’t push up on anything - not that they really need to.
But thinking about that isn’t gonna do him any favours.
Old men playing chess, animals in the shelter, getting slammed into the boards at high speeds - thinking of those should get his mind back on track.
“Nope, we’re gonna follow them.”
“I thought you said that spying on people is childish.”
“It is when you’re talking about lurking in bushes and hiding behind menus, Luke.”
When he sees you come around the front of the bed to grab your sneakers, he decides on his own terms he can turn back around, careful not to let his eyes linger too long on the expanse of your legs beneath the skirt you’ve now changed into.
If it wasn’t for the other afternoon spent working together to wash his car, or the evening spent watching movies, sharing a bottle of wine and indulging in those sticky face masks or the way you had quite literally drifted into his arms in the lake the other day, he would probably feel like a creeper for the way his one track mind has persisted. But, despite your efforts to convince him otherwise, he isn’t deluded.
There’s something brewing between the two of you.
It’s in the twitch of your lips that now follows every time you roll your eyes, and the magnetised force in which your eyes track him whenever he enters the room, where you had been entirely indifferent before - you’re warming up to him, he can sense it.
“So what’s the plan?”
“I wanna see what it is they keep running off together for,” you shrug as you braid your hair into pigtails in the mirror, your gaze flickering back to him, “Every time we interrupt them, they just keep sneaking back off again. Maybe if we find out what it is they’re doing, we’ll be better at keeping them away from doing it.”
“And how are we supposed to stay hidden?”
“Easy, we have to wear something we usually wouldn’t be caught dead in.”
“I’ve seen you in that exact outfit like twelve times.” He gestures with a lazy hand to the outfit you have on - white t-shirt, navy skirt, socks that go just above your ankles and the same pair of sneakers he must have seen you in every day the last year you were both in college together.
Not that he was paying that close attention.
“I know. Can I borrow that quarter zip you wore the other day? You know, the one that’s the colour of baby poop? Super hideous, really gross-,”
“Har har, real funny,” he whips the tank top he’s still, for whatever reason, clutching in his hands at you before throwing it onto the bed, and storming toward the door, calling out a, “Let’s go,” over his shoulder and not bothering to check if you’re coming when he starts to make his way downstairs - the echo of your giggling laughter following him down the hallway tells him as much.
—
“Are you sure she said the art supply store?”
Luke’s neck is starting to hurt from craning it above the shelves in search of Ellie’s curls, this being the second art store the two of you have checked. Somehow he’s the one looking out while you peruse the shop, now cooing at a section of crotchet animal kits and pointing them out until he mutters out some half-hearted cute, or nice.
“There aren’t many things I could have confused it for, Luke, unless you know of anything that rhymes with art supplies?” You pick up one of the kits, turning it to assess the difficulty by the pictures on the back before putting it back on the shelf.
“Maybe she said she had parts to buy?”
“Alright, smartass,” You scoff, shouldering past him to make your way toward the exit, clearly having no luck in finding them here. She definitely wouldn’t have parts to buy for anything, she’s hardly Fix-It Felix. “You can buy me lunch and we’ll see if she’s put anything on her story yet.”
“I’m starting to think they’re not even at the mall and you’ve lured me out of the house under false pretences for free food.” The diffidence he’s giving is entirely forced as he drags his feet behind you, following you out of the store. “If you wanted me to take you on a date, you could have just asked. It was probably the stop for a smoothie that had us missing them in the first place.”
You gasp, and before he has the opportunity to retort with something just as annoying, you grab his hand and tug him with you behind one of the giant plants that are beside the coffee stand, keeping a hold of him as you poke your head around the corner.
“There they are,” you whisper back, your fingers still clutching at his as he crowds into the same space to make sure he too is hidden behind the sprawling leaves.
“Oh so hiding behind bushes is alright if it’s your idea?”
“Shh,” you frown, your hand releasing his and pressing over his mouth, “They’ll hear you, Loud Mouth,” and his eyes follow the pointed finger on your other hand to where Ellie and Cole are walking together toward the store you and Luke just left - side by side, sodas in hand, smiling and laughing and nudging at each other.
In better circumstances, he’d be thinking about how he’s pressed to your back, bending to accommodate for the height difference, your head tilted to make room for his to lean in for a better look, and your hand still resting on his face, not really covering his mouth but more caressing his jaw in an absentminded fashion as you watch the two of them.
But all he can think about, disturbingly enough, is his brother - and how hurt he’d be to see what’s happening between his supposed best friends.
“We’re following them, right?” He asks lowly, his face not too far from yours, and when you turn your head to the side to look at him, he feels like your gaze is softer than usual when it takes in how hardened and dark his is.
“Definitely,” you agree, stepping away from him and turning to face him properly. “If you saw me out of the corner of your eye, you wouldn’t know it was me, right?”
Wrong, Luke thinks, but that’s only because he’d be able to pick you out of a line up in a pitch black room by now - blind folded, spun around a few times for good measure and facing the wrong way.
When he had found a Mets jersey on the rack in the Goodwill you had dragged him to in search of a disguise, and your words from earlier about not being caught dead in something had rang in his head, he had thought it was perfect. And then you had waltzed over with the same jersey, and your eyes had lit up.
“We can’t wear the same thing,” he frowned, unable to hold the weight of the expression for too long when he saw just how excited you were getting. “That’s hardly blending in."
“No, it’s perfect!” You exclaimed, “Ellie would never expect me to match anyone!”
He had thought the shirts were too much before you threw in the identical orange baseball caps you had found, and at that point he was cursing whatever scorned woman it was that dumped all her ex’s shit into the thrift store.
The two of you look cute in your matching gear, he can’t deny that, he just wishes you could have found something that made him feel a little less dirty, maybe Wolverine blue and yellow, if you were gonna dress up as a couple.
Luke doesn’t like how you still make his throat dry in Mets gear.
He reaches out to adjust the cap on your head, pulling the bill down to cast more of a shadow over your face, and combining that with the way your braids, the ones you said you’d never usually wear but seem to suit you anyway, come out the bottom of either side of the cap, he figures anyone else would have a hard time immediately placing you. “Probably not,” he shrugs, making sure to keep an eye on the apparent lovebirds still hovering in the entrance of the art store.
“Great.” You smile victoriously, “Put your arm around me.”
“You’re kidding, right?”
“Do I look like I’m kidding?” You scoff, “I’m hardly asking you to ravage me outside the Pretzel Peddler, Hughes, make haste,” you shoo him forward, taking control of the situation and forcing yourself under his arm as the two of you stumble back toward the art store.
Remaining incognito isn’t entirely hard when the two of you are moving as one, you stuffed under his arm and him able to hide his face in the top of your head if he thinks either Cole or Ellie are likely to see you.
Following them is easy, able to maintain a short enough distance that you can both eavesdrop on their minimal conversation, and there isn’t really a problem until they break apart.
Ellie goes toward the back of the store, Cole towards the front, and you whisper to Luke that it might be best for you to break apart, too - if you both follow one of them, the other is more likely to catch you - and so you drift after Cole, and he drifts after Ellie, and while the two of you can still see each other, there are a lot of unidentifiable hand gestures in place of where you can no longer talk. That is, until Cole heads further down the other end of the store, and you slip completely out of view.
It’s less fun, spying this way, watching as Ellie browses the shelves, looking over all the sketchbooks until she finds the right one - as if he hasn’t seen a stack of around 5 of them in their room back at the house - swerving so fast on her feet that Luke stumbles on his own to get away, rushing around the bend before she can see him.
When he rounds the corner of the aisle and sees you heading straight for him, eyes wide and step rushed, he rushes, too, tripping forward until the two of you collide, your stance thankfully much sturdier than his. You grab him by his shirt to make sure he’s steady on his feet before you pull him with you as you fall against the shelf behind you, standing on your tip toes and tugging him down to meet your lips with a surprised grunt.
What the fuck?
Your hands move up to cup at either side of his face, holding him in place as you angle to slot the bill of your cap to the side of his so they don’t bump and fall off, and he loses himself in the warmth of your kiss before he even realises that he’s halfway gone. Your hands cover both of your profiles, and Luke thinks that if you are caught, there’s no way for them to identify the two of you unless Ellie has the orange-red colour and long, supposedly almond - or so you had told him - shape of your nails memorised. Because who would pay such close attention to something like that?
A hand falls to your hip, another to your waist, and he’s teasing your back into an arch with his touch, only distantly hearing surprised exclamations of oh fuck, and sorry, from either side of the aisle.
He pays no mind to the sound of rushed, retreating footsteps, trying to press his tongue between your lips for a further taste of very berry smoothie and sugary balm that he can feel the stickiness of, that he wants his lips to be coated in forever.
He savours the seconds after, where you drag out the show just to make sure Ellie and Cole have actually disappeared, and he pushes his luck one more time, deepening the kiss until you pull away, your hands on his chest shoving purposefully.
“What was that for?” He asks, breathless and dazed as he takes in your appearance, lips swollen and wet by his doing, pupils dilated.
“PDA makes people uncomfortable, right?” you shrug, like it’s the most obvious explanation for the way you just kissed the life out of him. Like there was nothing else you possibly could have done to get out of that predicament. And his heart thumps as he remembers that those are his words, uttered in a tease way back in the restaurant at the club. “They were hardly gonna stick around and watch, I don’t have Caufield down as a voyeur.”
Luke watches as your eyes drop briefly to his lips, and he swears he sees the flicker of a smile twitch at the corners of your mouth. His fingers come up by instinct, pressing tentatively at the sticky residue that coats the outline of them.
“You tell anyone I did that and I’ll gut you like a fish, Hughes.”
He nods, still in a daze, if he’s honest, and stays in place while you nudge past him to follow in the direction where Ellie and Cole disappeared.
When he does finally come to, shaking his head to pull himself out of the way his brain is trying to relive the last few minutes, he follows, too - maybe less discreet in his movements, this time, in the hopes that another close call might just gain him another kiss, too.
You’d like to think you have good intuition when it comes to others and their actions. You can see straight through people, a shift in their expression, a twitch in their smile, a glint in their eye - it makes you protective of the people you surround yourself with, keeping only a close-knit group of friends, and keeping everyone else at arms length.
Friends who you know when they’re upset, or down, need someone around, or need space. It’s how you know Luke has been avoiding you all week, and how you know even more just to leave him to it.
Not that you’re friends.
It started with long days at the rink - not that you lament his training, but you know he hadn’t been that deep into his regimen so far this summer. Quinn had been the one to drop you off at the club that last couple of days, and Luke hadn’t joined the group when they had played a round of golf and stopped by the bar for some refreshments after.
You’ve seen him around the house still, usually shooting off to God-knows-where, eyes locking in the hall as he passes you like a ship in the night, until he shifts his gaze with an awkward smile.
If he wants to be childish about one stupid, meaningless kiss, you have no choice but to let him.
You’d hardly forced yourself on him. He could have pushed you off if he didn’t want it. Instead, he’d pulled you even closer, even tried to slip you some tongue! And it had kind of been his suggestion in the first place.
You wouldn’t be so bothered about it if you had something to do with Ellie gone for the next week - her little sister’s birthday taking precedent over your summer plans, and the family taking a trip out of state. You can’t even go out, trapped inside due to the unforeseen storm - and you hate thunder, it reminds you too much of all those tumultuous nights locked in your room, listening to your parents fighting, the wind and rain doing little to drown it all out.
But all you have is the house, and with the house comes the movies - the ones he had promised to watch with you.
You had both written down your top ten, yours in his notes, and his in yours, and the damn page has been haunting you every time you unlock your phone. And that’s how you’ve given in so easily. It has nothing to do with the fact you miss him - it’s just pure boredom and curiosity that has you watching Happy Gilmore on your own on a Friday night.
You don’t miss him.
That would be ridiculous.
Luke Hughes is annoying.
His taste of movies is annoying.
The fact that won’t talk to you is annoying.
“Hey, I thought we were gonna watch this together.”
Or not.
Luke leans against the doorway, possessing the kind of casual indifference that only a man could, frowning and pouting as if he’s not the sole reason you’re cooped up on your own watching a damn movie about golf of all things.
“Thought you were avoiding me,” you bite back, arms crossed over your chest and brows furrowed in frustration.
“Why would I be avoiding you?” He asks as he steps into the room and closes the door behind him, your eyes darting straight to long, slender fingers wrapped around the handle.
“Because you kissed me, and then all of a sudden started acting like I don’t exist to you.” You accuse with a pointed glare, figuring one of you has to have the guts to talk about it.
“Actually, you kissed me,” he smirks, perching himself on the edge of your bed, “And then told me in graphic detail you’d pretty much murder me if I ever spoke about it again, so I,” he frowns, “Didn’t.”
You can’t help but scowl at how stupid that sounds. He can’t seriously think you would murder him. If you were the murdering type in the first place, you’d have done it long ago. You even tell him as much.
“I don’t know, you had this scary look in your eye, kind of didn’t want to test that theory,” he shrugs, reaching in the pocket of his hoodie and throwing a bag over to you.
M&Ms. Your favourite.
“You gonna scoot over?” He asks, raising a brow and widening his eyes as if he’s pleading, as if you’ve been the one giving him the cold shoulder.
You roll your eyes and shuffle across the bed, making room for him beside you that he occupies way too quick, legs stretching out in front of him, all the way down the bed, as he gets comfortable.
You try to focus on the movie, as if you have any clue what’s been happening so far, anyway, but you can see him out of the corner of your eye, an arm tucked behind his head, his chest stretched out, and his jaw tensing as he chews on the candy he’s already stealing from you.
He’s had a haircut. Shorter on the sides, and it makes his face look a little more defined. Still curly - maybe even curlier - and softer than before, in a way that you’d want to run your hands through it, if you were a crazy person, of course.
And he smells good, too.
You’re starting to think this has been his plan all along - for distance to make your wretched heart grow fonder, or whatever - and you find yourself tensing your own jaw as you grind your teeth and try to tune back into whatever Adam Sandler is yapping about.
“I sort of was avoiding you,” he admits, and you can still see him out of the corner of your eye, looking down at you, now, although you don’t look back.
“I know.”
“I’m sorry,” he apologises, shifting a little to face you more, “I thought you might have felt weird about kissing me.”
“I didn’t.”
“Okay then.”
“Alright.”
“We can talk about it, if you want?” He suggests, and that’s finally when you look at him, with his lips twisted nervously and his brow raised, anticipating your response.
What’s there to even talk about? You kissed him as a distraction. He knows that. You know that.
“I’m good.” You tell him, a short, forced smile to ease the tension before he smiles back.
“I know something we can talk about,” he leans in, “Considering how little you care about this movie.”
“Yeah, what’s that?”
“How you had a big fat crush on me in college,” he smirks, eyes darting between yours, the flash from the tv screen highlighting all the different hues of blues and greens in his irises.
He’s not gonna catch you out, though.
“You’re delusional.” You tell him, your own eyes narrowing, almost like a defence mechanism. He seems to be quite good at reading you, and you’re not letting him in that easy.
“So you keep saying,” he pouts, pensively, “But then it’s you never talked to me, Luke, and I remember small random details about you, Luke!”
“I don’t sound like that,” you frown, taking slight offence to the squeaky voice he puts on, more than likely to distract you from the closing distance. He speaks again before you can realise you really should be putting more effort into denying such ridiculous accusations, before he completely slanders your good name.
“You’ve been avoiding me all week and I missed you, Luke-,”
You don’t know why your mouth is all of a sudden on his, but if you take a second to think about it, you’ll spiral out. His lips are soft, and your noses slot perfectly beside each other - no painful bumps or clumsy collisions. Just a plain, normal kiss between two people who tolerate each other. That’s all.
When you part, his eyes drift open softly, his lashes - infuriatingly long as they are - flutter open, and his irises glaze over as if he’s under a spell.
“That was-,”
“To shut you up,” you mutter, rolling your own eyes and forcing a scowl. “You were starting to give me a headache.”
He nods, that dumb look still in his eyes, and you feel your jaw clenching almost achingly at how it makes you feel.
“And I care very deeply about Gilmore’s happiness, so if you could cut it out with your yapping, I’d really appreciate it.”
“His name is Happy-,”
“I didn’t ask.”
When Luke is on the ice, most of the noise around him usually tunes itself out. Aside from the scrape of his skates, and the thudding of his heart, he can usually dial out the crowd, the chanting, the booing, the chirping, whatever it may be - all distractions to the end goal.
The one noise he never can ignore, though, is that of the goal horn, blearing throughout the arena, bouncing off of every corner until it hits him like a freight train, and he thinks they ring a little louder when it’s him that scores.
And with that horn, he can fine tune himself back into his surroundings. To shouts and cheers and applause, a sea of red and white jerseys jumping up, the Devils logo brandished across their chests, and his work being praised by the masses.
He somehow has the power to zero in on you, too. Arms raised, up a little in the stands, not too far that you’re just a speck, but not too close that you’d be a distraction.
A wide smile on your face, adoration in your eyes, and 43 on your arm.
“Luke!” Your lips read, drowned out by the crowd, but he can still make it out, calling out to him like you’re the only other person in the room. “C’mon, Luke!”
He smiles, as big as he ever has before, and points straight at you, dropping a wink like you could possibly catch it from out in the stands, and taking a bow.
“Hughes, you big lump, wake up!”
He groans as he’s shaken from his sleep, soft hands gripping at his arms and jolting him awake.
“What?” He doesn’t open his eyes, not yet, but he thinks it’s the weight of his furrowed eyebrows keeping them closed.
“I need a favour,” you whisper.
“No.”
“You don’t even know what it is.”
“It’s 2am. I don’t do favours before 9.”
“C’mon, please?” He opens one eye to your pleading face, and then another, when he catches the teary reflection of the moonlight in your eyes.
“What is it?” He straightens up, rubbing the sleep from his eyelids and straining to make the rest of you out in the dark.
“I need you to look at the window in my room, it’s whistling.”
“It’s just the storm, it gets like that when it’s windy,” he sighs, sinking back down a little into his pillows. He had thought you were in danger, or something.
“Can’t you fix it?” You plead, soft fingers still squeezing a little at his bicep, and his chest starts to feel heavy just from the tone of your voice - but it’s 2am. You had him up until midnight watching Wall-E, and he has a morning skate with his dad at 6am.
“Do I look like a handyman?” He huffs, also a little aggrieved at the fact you had disrupted his rather nice dream. “Just go to sleep and ignore it.”
“I can’t.” You whine, “I can’t sleep if there’s a storm, they freak me out. And I can’t ignore it when it’s literally screaming at me through a broken window. And I’m on my own in there, it’s scary.”
Luke presses his palm firm into the socket of his closed eyes, trying to rub away the exhaustion that is urging every fibre of his being to fall straight back asleep.
He can’t fix the window. It’s been like that for as long as him and his brothers have lived here - always the dud room left to whoever rocks up last to the house - and even if he could, he’s comfortable, and warm, and if his bare feet touch the cold, hardwood floor, he won’t be able to get himself to drift back off.
He sighs, shuffling beneath the sheets before grasping them and flipping them over, making room beside him and muttering a grumpy, demanding, “Get in.”
“Luke,” you whine, and he can see your pout even through his closed eyes - lips plump and plush and if he gets even a glimpse he’s going to start thinking about kissing them, again. “You’re really not gonna help me?”
“I don’t offer my super comfy bed up to just anybody,” he reasons, making a little more room, “C’mon, you can barely hear the rain in here, it’s this or the couch downstairs.”
“Can’t you take the couch and I take your comfy bed?”
Luke opens one eye to look at you, eyes glimmering nervously in the crack of moonlight that sneaks through the curtains, lip tugged between your teeth, and relents, immediately. “Do you want me to take the couch?”
He could probably go sleep in your bed, if you’re really that bothered. He doesn’t do too well with noises while he sleeps, but he will if he has to - if that’s what makes you feel better. But you had just said it was scary being alone, and he’s counting on that to make a case for himself to keep his super comfy bed in his whistle-less bedroom.
“No,” you grumble, shoving at his arm, “Move over a little more.”
He relents, making as much room as he can for you to crawl into his bed before he flips the sheets back over on top of you, waiting for you to get comfortable before he melts back into place.
His legs extending into yours is purely accidental, but he doesn’t move them when you don’t flinch away, taking a second to adjust his positioning until he realises something.
“You’re not wearing pants.”
“Neither are you.” You mumble back straight away, turning to face him, the bare skin of your calves brushing his as you move.
“It’s my bed,” he shrugs, his body on its side and his arm beneath his pillow, the space cramped now that you’re both squeezed in, and he’s trying to give you room, but he swears you have space on the other side. “I don’t wear pants to bed.”
“I don’t either.”
“What if there’s a fire?”
“I think I’d rather succumb to the flames than let your brothers see me in my panties.”
He just hums, sleepily, trying not to overthink how you wouldn’t mind him seeing you in them. He closes his eyes and tries to ignore the press of your skin to his.
“Do you want me to go put pants on, Luke, would that make you happy?”
“Don’t ask such a ridiculous question.” He huffs, sinking into his pillows and getting himself back into the right position to drop back off into a deep slumber. “Go to sleep.”
The soft patter of rain against the window lulls him, and he slowly feels you relax beside him, a few minutes of silence settling between the two of you - comforting and still - before you break it.
“Luke?” You whisper, this time barely audible, like you don’t even want to be heard - and it’s that thought that has him ignoring you, sleep clutching his eyes closed anyway, so close to drifting back off.
He feels your body shuffle against the mattress, still not enough to lure him back into full consciousness, but he’s aware enough to know your every move.
And he’d like to think he can predict them, imagining you shuffling to get comfy and hoping he’s too deep in his sleep to care if you nudge him while doing so.
But he could never predict the soft press of your lips to the corner of his mouth, and the gentle, almost non-existent muttering of a thank you against his skin.
He only lets himself smile when he can feel you settle back into the bed, body laid beside him, bare legs brushing against his under the sheets.
You are so welcome, he thinks, that soft smile curving into something much deeper as he succumbs to sleep, body melting into an oozy, gooey, consuming mess beside your own.
Luke should have known you’d get your own back on him for the whole avoiding thing.
The two of you had been sweet for a solid week, movie nights every other night, especially after you had shared his bed, you’d even made him lunch to come back to the day after. And he had started driving you to and from work, again.
And it’s the drive home from work one day that he sees something in you switch.
“It’s just gonna be a couple people, you’ll probably even know some of the girls from college.”
“It’s your house, Luke, you don’t have to explain your parties to me.” You shift your knees back to face the dash, where they had just been angled toward him, and you cross your arms against your chest.
“We can pick back up on movie night tomorrow, I don’t have any training all day so we can do a marathon, if you want.”
“Ellie’s back today, so I don’t know.”
He frowns, tightening his fingers around the wheel as he watches you retreat all of a sudden, like you’re annoyed with him, or something.
And then as soon as he pulls up outside the house, you’re climbing out of the car before he even has a chance to come around and open the door for you, storming up the driveway and disappearing inside.
He tries not to let it get to him. Tries to lose himself in the festivities of the night - a house party thrown on whim at the discovery that most of the brothers’ mutual friends were in town. He was excited to see his boys from Michigan, Ethan, Dylan, Luca and Jacob, who all climb out of Ethan’s truck with a 6-pack in hand, and crowd around Luke, embracing him with brotherly pats on his back and ushering him into the kitchen to partake in their pre game ritual - a round of shots to line their stomachs.
He still keeps a close eye on you once the party is underway. Watches you and Ellie, watches when Cole joins the two of you, and you laugh at whatever dumb jokes he’s trying to tell you. Watches your gaze flicker his way throughout the night, and leave just as quickly, and he has to shrug off the chirps of his friends when they notice, too.
He later watches you catch up with a couple of the girls coming from your sorority, and that’s around the time he loses you, lost in a round of beer pong that fills his bladder quicker than he could have anticipated.
He excuses himself up to his room, the music dying down the further upstairs he gets, and relieves himself with an inebriated bop of his head to whatever melody he can still hear blasting through the floorboards.
He zips his jeans back up, and ambles over to the sink, washing his hands under the faucet until the sound of his door opening has his heart falling into the pit of his stomach.
“Jesus,” he gasps, shutting off the water and turning to face where you’re stepping into the room and closing the door behind yourself. “You ever heard of knocking? What are you doing upstairs?”
“Was just checking you weren’t like jerking off in here or something,”
“What if I was, were you planning on watching?”
“Yeah, right,” you scoff, pulling a face to feign some sort of offence, but Luke watches as you fidget, tucking your hair behind your ears and shuffling on your feet.
“Like you’ve been watching me all night,” he smirks, tossing the towel he had used to dry his hands back onto the hook and taking a step into your space, backing you against the counter, your shoes no longer shuffling along the floor. It feels like it’s been days now that you’ve been off with him, even though it’s been a mere few hours, but in those hours, he’s had a lot of time to think about your relationship, or lack thereof. “Think I haven’t seen you? Can’t take those pretty eyes off of me, can you?”
He’d first noticed when you came downstairs with Ellie, earlier, pinned to her side and gossiping about something, no doubt catching up on her week away. You kept glancing his way, subtly at first, eyes darting over and shifting back just as quick to your best friend, faking interest and nodding along until you looked back over. Your efforts were more noticeable as the two of you moved around different corners of the room, interacting with different groups and still meeting eyes across the expanse of space between you and him.
His heart jumped every time.
And then Victoria had arrived, just before he had been recruited to play beer pong - an old hookup from his college days. She had always been more of a friend than anything else, and Luke had no interest in reigniting whatever dampened spark they once had, she has a boyfriend now, anyway, but when her hand grazed his arm, and he looked over to see your glare zeroed in on the exact spot she was touching him, he thought he’d have a little fun with it.
Nothing too extreme, a few loud laughs, a little longer spent with her than initially anticipated, but she had been more than happy to regale him with stories about her new relationship, so pretending to pay attention didn’t seem like such a bad idea if it was going to make you do something.
He had a sneaking suspicion as to what had turned your mood, earlier, and he was about to have fun testing his theory - that you had been jealous at the mere mention of other girls being at the house.
He didn’t think it would culminate in you following him all the way up to his room, confronting him in his bathroom with nobody else around, but he’s hardly mad about it, now.
“Shut up,” you scowl, but your tone is weak, and Luke knows he’s got you. Chin tilted up to meet his eyes in defiance, gaze locked on his as he moves closer, and he’s thankful, for the first time tonight, that the boys had forced him to take those shots when the party started.
He wouldn’t have the courage to challenge you like this, otherwise - an inebriated cockiness taking over, puffing out his chest and filling him with the same sort of misplaced bravado he’s been convincing himself to muster all week.
“You already know how to make me.” He mutters, lowly, the proximity of your face to his giving his tone a breathiness that he hopes comes across more seductive than slurred. His mind is stuck on that kiss from the other night, when he had apparently irritated you so much that you felt that was your only option.
You blink slow, eyes dropping to his lips, and before he can blink, himself, you close the distance.
This is different to before - incomparable to a kiss given just to hide your faces, one just to stop him from talking and another when you had thought he wasn’t conscious.
This is heated, and intentional, and intense.
Dainty fingers clutch at the front of his shirt, pinching slightly at his skin before taking a hold of the fabric, and there’s no possible way for you to play this off as something less.
Your lips are firm, slotted against his, and moving before he knows it - his tongue licking at the seams until they part, and you grant him access to the sweet taste of fruity liquor inside your mouth.
Large hands take residence on your hips, sliding daringly backward until he’s gripping at your ass, long fingers stretching down to trace the hem of your skirt, denim thick but not immune to his absentminded efforts to chase the feeling of more.
He’s expecting you to come to your senses, anticipating the grip of your hands to turn into a shove, and the sweetness of your taste to turn sour when you start to yell at him, fire in your eyes and venom on your tongue - but all he hears is you moaning into his mouth, all he feels is the press of your torso against his as your back arches into his touch, his fingertips grazing the top of your thigh as your skirt moves in his hold.
He’s greedy with the way he touches you after that, hands cupping, fingers kneading, nails scratching even just to leave his mark, and he barely notices yours slipping down, down, down until the cold press of your fingertips grazes his abdomen, stomach tensing at your touch.
He groans a little, his movements halting as you manage to distract him from his ministrations, using the leverage you have on his body to press and push until your lips part - swollen and wet with his spit.
His heart thuds in his chest, thump thump thump echoing in his head as he watches you - holds his breath and stares at you with his own lips parted, the taste of you lingering in a way he doesn’t want to swallow too soon.
He waits for your face to turn, for that hypnotised look in your eyes to turn into a glare, the distance between you bringing some much needed clarity - but the shift never comes.
Instead, you push yourself away from the counter, and he finds himself looking straight down as your hands make their way back to the hard ridges of his stomach.
“What are you doing?” He stutters as your fingers start to tickle lower.
“I wanna give you a hand.”
“Give me-,” he splutters, his own hand stopping yours in its tracks. “Am I dreaming right now? Is this a trick?”
“No,” you persist, pushing your hands despite his weak, half-hearted efforts to stop them. “You did me a favour, why can’t I do one back?”
“Because that’s not-,” He can’t believe he’s trying to turn this down, the lump in his throat protesting the words that try to come up. You just kissed him. You just let him hike your skirt up and push you against the bathroom counter, let his fingers go so far beyond the realm of reality that he thinks he’s still lost in a dream - and he can’t figure out why he’s even questioning it, anymore. “There’s a pretty big difference between me letting you sleep in my bed and you jerking me off,”
“It’s only a big deal if you make it one, Luke.” You shrug, pausing at the waistband of his pants. Every nerve from his ribs to his toes tingles, the teasing touch of the tips of your fingers sparking something unshakable within him. “Do you want me to help you out or not?”
“Are you high or something?”
“No,” you chuckle, meeting his eyes again - sparkling and beautiful, a hidden vulnerability flashing across them at the insistence of his hesitant rejection. “Are you? You’re really gonna turn me down to just jack yourself off in here on your own?”
“Please don’t call it that.” He pleads, the last thing he needs right now is any sort of reminder of his brother. Not when you have your hands on him. Not when you could conceivably get on your knees right before him. Not when his deepest darkest fantasies could play out after so many years of pining after you. “No.”
“No?”
“No.” He lets out a panicked stammer. “Not no. I meant no, like no to your question, not no period.”
“What?” You step back with a frustrated huff, taking your hands away, close enough still that he can reach out and grab them, holding them between the both of you.
“I want-,” Good lord, he wants a lot. He can still taste you on his tongue, still feel the press of your kiss on his own swollen lips, and his head is spinning so far out of control he doesn’t think he’ll be able to knock any sense back into it any time soon. “Are you sure?”
“Oh my God, Hughes, just pull your pants down and let’s get on with it.”
Luke pulls you in for one more kiss before he relinquishes all control, and hums and whines as you work his zipper down, the sound bouncing off the tiles and reverberating around his skull.
He doesn’t know how you can so easily go back to normal after.
He can’t understand how you could just lift yourself back onto your feet when the two of you were finished, adjust your skirt around your hips, and leave him alone in the bathroom, panting, flushed and barely coherent, all evidence of your tryst swallowed down like the moans you had forced him to suppress - all except the faint bruises on the lowest part of his stomach that you had sucked into his skin, the ones he hopes grow darker as the days go on, the ones he feels pulsing as he rejoins his friends in the kitchen.
He had once again promised not to utter a word to anyone - but it doesn’t stop the thousands of them that swirl around his brain after, the ones that linger there all through the night, resurface through the week, and etch themselves into the very core of his being.
Thousands of words in hundreds of languages, mixing to form romanticised poems he might never understand.
All he does understand, is that he’s so far gone for you now, it isn’t even funny.
Far gone is starting to seem like the understatement of the century.
Luke can’t get enough of being around you, and it’s so detached now from the two of you only ever hanging out to scheme about Jack and Ellie that he can’t even remember the last efforts you made to do anything about their relationship.
He’s now just focused on whatever relationship the two of you are building between yourselves.
Watching movies in his bed, comparing commentary on your favourites, asking for his opinion, and him asking for yours. And he likes how gentle you are with the things he loves. Movies are kind of his thing, and sharing them with someone else - sitting and watching them and waiting for some kind of reaction, good or bad - could be intimidating with anyone else.
But you’re so attentive. You ask questions, you remember things, and you try to understand why he might love a film, and try to see things from his perspective, rather than stamping your own opinion over his and ruling anything out.
You’re open-minded, even though you pretend not to be. You’d given Happy Gilmore a second chance, even, and Luke never had you pegged as the second chance type.
You talk a lot more to him on your drives to and from work - not that you didn’t talk before, but this is different, entirely. You have actual discussions, around more than just what’s happening at the house, or what’s happening at work.
The two of you talk about college, about your major, your plans for after school. You talk about hockey, about Jersey, about his friends and teammates back there, and the life he’s built away from the one you pretend you never knew.
And the way he feels about you starts to consume him in ways he never thought possible. In ways that make him sort of understand where Jack had been coming from all those years, when he’d never shut up about his feelings for Ellie, and how he thought about her all the time, and wanted to be with her 24/7.
It’s what has him hovering around at the club after he and Quinn had played a round of golf, waiting outside for Quinn to give the keys back for their caddy, and spotting you chatting to Cara at the side door to the restaurant.
He waves as soon as you see him, and his heart jumps when you immediately excuse yourself to skip over, a bright smile on your face that he never thought could be directed his way.
“Hey!” You greet him, cheerily, ponytail swaying behind you as you come to a stop in front of him.
“What time are you getting off?” He asks, foregoing any small talk and cutting straight to the chase.
“I’m on the lunch shift today, so 3,” you pout, checking the watch on your wrist that he knows reads just past 1. “You don’t have to wait around though, I can catch a ride from somebody else,”
“No, I’ll take you home.” He assures you, “I need to go to the mall, I’ve got to get a present for a baby shower, I was hoping you’d help me.”
“I don’t know how much help I’d be, babies give me the heebie-jeebies.”
“Yeah, same,” he chuckles, “Maybe we could grab dinner or something, instead?”
“I was gonna pick up a dress for the party next week, so maybe we could do that first?”
“And then dinner?” He asks, a hopeful raise of his eyebrows that is spurred on by the way you’re biting back a smile.
“Yes, Luke, then dinner.” You chuckle, beaming up at him when his face breaks out into a full-blown grin.
“Sick,” he replies, “Yeah, cool,” he nods as he watches you step away, amusement gleaming in your eyes, “I’ll be out here at 3.”
“I’ll see you then.”
Luke watches as you make your way back to the side door of the restaurant, meeting your eye when you look back at him and relishing in the way he can catch the flush of your cheeks all the way from the fountain.
He smiles to himself as he turns on one foot, light in his step and light in his head, nodding to the guy who is painting the railings leading up to the club foyer and swinging on his feet as he waits for his brother.
If he had a little less self-awareness, he thinks he could start leaping and swinging from the nearest lamp post like a scene straight out of Singing In The Rain.
He hasn’t felt elation like this in a long time.
He hadn’t uttered the word, exactly, but this is as close to a date as he might get, and his entire body is buzzing at the thought of it.
“Are you coming?” Quinn calls out as he descends the steps at the front of the club, keys in one hand and a water bottle in the other.
“Uhh,” Luke drags out as he not-so-subtly looks back to where you and Cara are talking by the side door. “I think I’m gonna check out the gym.”
“You know it’s just a bunch of old guys on machines in there, right? Plus, I thought we were going in the morning with the rest of the guys?”
“Right,” he mutters absentmindedly, “I meant the pool.”
“You hate indoor pools.”
“The sauna?”
“Your little crush is getting out of hand, huh?” Quinn chuckles, elbowing at Luke’s side to get his attention back.
“It’s not a crush.” Luke huffs, lips pouted as he tears his eyes away from you with great effort.
“I think we’re past the point of you denying it, Luke,” his older brother gestures to the wall Luke had been staring at when he came outside, “You’re literally watching paint dry to pass the time until she finishes work-,”
“No, I mean like I had a crush on her,” Luke sighs, “Before this summer, when I just thought she was pretty and hot and I could never pluck up the courage to do anything about it. It doesn’t feel like a crush anymore. Or maybe it does, I don’t know, I kinda feel like she’s crushing me, to be honest.”
He gives a nervous laugh when he says it, but it’s not enough to cover up the way he really feels - not when it comes to his big brother, who puts his keys back in his pocket just so he can spare a hand to reach out and pinch at Luke’s cheeks, teasing, “Lukey’s in love,” before he swats him away.
“Hardly,” he scoffs in denial, although he doesn’t really understand why he’s fighting the thought of it so hard.
It’s not exactly a preposterous idea. Love might be an overestimation - you haven’t exactly let him all the way in - but like seems like an understatement. Obsessed seems dramatic. Infatuated?
“I don’t know, I like spending time with her, like talking to her, is all,” he shrugs. He likes a lot more than that, but confiding in Quinn after how his last encounter with Jack about the whole thing had gone has his back up, a little. “I feel like she might like me too.”
It’s the first time he’s said it aloud to anyone else. He’s chirped you about it enough - taken note of the various shades of pink he can flush your cheeks when he does, darker and darker as the days go on - but he’s been abiding by your request of staying quiet about any of the specifics.
And it’s been hard. Oversharing is kind of his thing, usually, and keeping information from his brothers isn’t exactly something he loves doing, not when he’s been cursing Jack all summer for doing the same.
“Jack thinks she’s using me. He doesn’t like her.”
“Jack doesn’t like that he can’t beat her. Like he can fire a thousand shots at her and nothing goes in, he isn’t used to that.”
“Oh, but I am?” Luke scoffs, although he isn’t entirely sure if he is offended. “Are you calling me a loser?”
“No, Luke, I’m not calling you a loser.” He chuckles. “It’s like hockey, right, you and me, we chase people down. Don’t give in until we’re caught up and we can disarm someone. That isn’t Jack’s game. He’s usually the one being chased, you know? Usually the one ahead.”
“He’s not that bad on the other side of the blue line,” Luke scoffs, although he gets where his eldest brother is coming from. He hasn’t really thought about it in that context - that you and Jack don’t get along because you’re alike - but it makes sense now that he thinks about it.
“He’s not like you, though. You get some weird thrill out of going after people you have no business going after, you have since you were younger, taking down kids 4 or 5 years older than you and twice the size for fun. Makes sense you’d want someone so far out of your league.”
Luke looks back over to where you’re still stood with Cara, and just manages to catch your eye before you look away, pretending he hadn’t caught you. The smile erupts slowly onto his features, close-lipped and soft, but he feels the joy of it all throughout his body.
“I think I’m wearing her down.”
Stolen glances across whatever room the two of you happen to be in, smiles that you’ve only ever sent his way, feather-light but purposeful kisses on the corner of his mouth when you think he’s asleep, seeking him out in his bathroom after seeing him with someone else - yeah, he’s getting there.
“Good for you, Luke,” Quinn chuckles, patting his brother on the back, “As long as you know what you’re getting yourself into.”
He does. At least he thinks so.
You feel weird.
It’s the only word you can think to describe the mood you’ve been in for the past week.
Well, weird and off.
You can’t quite put your finger on it, either, but it’s throwing you off your game.
There had been a second the other day where you had thought you might have gotten to the bottom of things - when you’d come inside from sunbathing with Ellie and had found Luke in his room, packing a bag for his trip to Vegas for some award ceremony he and Quinn were nominated for.
Clarity had hit you like a brick to the head, panic swirling in your chest at the thought of him being gone for a whole week, but then he’d looked up from where he was perched on the ground, had given you a lopsided grin, and had ushered you over to help - and the speed in which you had started to feel normal again quickly diminished any thoughts of Luke being the cause of your weirdness.
But it has been hard to shake, even as unidentifiable as it may be, and the longer you feel this way, the worse it gets, bubbling up like anxiety that keeps your jaw tight, and your lips pressed together.
It culminates the night of the boys’ party - a celebration of Quinn and Luke’s nominations, and a good luck send-off of sorts that Jack had wanted to throw before they left.
You had started the night off fine - kind of attached at Luke’s hip, him muttering teasing remarks into your ear about you clinging to him ‘cause you’re gonna miss him when he’s gone, and catching up with a couple of the guys from Michigan. You might have even been having fun at one point, smiling into the red cup Luke had placed in your hand at the beginning of the night that you still hadn’t drained, as you watched him shoot pool and he kept smirking up at you as he leant over the table.
You shouldn’t be feeling anxious when he looks at you like that, but God, do you feel something.
And then your phone starts to buzz in your pocket, and assuming it’s Ellie, who, once again, is away with her family - this time in Europe for a couple of weeks - you pull it out.
But it isn’t Ellie.
It’s your dad.
And the heart that had been thudding in your chest at the mere capture of Luke’s attention just moments ago, is now dropping out of your ass.
It isn’t a call, thank God - you don’t think you could handle that, feeling the way you currently feel - but an email.
Your dad hasn’t called in a while. He rarely texts, either.
This is how it is, now. Emails and Facebook posts you happen to come across, like you’re some distant co-worker or an old family friend.
Not his only daughter. Not the kid he abandoned in search of a better life.
When you open it up, there’s no subject, no body either to the email, just an attachment.
A family photo, him, his new wife, and their two boys, stood in front of the Eiffel Tower, edited into a postcard that reads, Wish You Were Here!
And resentment bubbles within you.
I could have been, if you’d have invited me.
You shove your phone back into your pocket and do a quick glance around the room to check if anyone might have noticed the tears welling in your eyes, but you’re safe.
Luke’s attention is on the table, the rest of the boys’ attention is on him, and you slip away before he has the chance to meet your eye - to see straight through you in the way only he knows how, and make your way to the kitchen in the search of something stronger.
When you push your way through the door, whatever weird feeling that has been consuming you for the past week culminates into something bigger.
Something darker, and heavier, and angrier, like a tornado of emotions tearing through your very core, picking up every last bit of restraint on it’s way as your eyes narrow onto it’s next target.
“You have got to be fucking kidding me.”
Jack pulls back in a daze from the blonde who’s face he was just suctioned to, brows furrowed as his intoxicated gaze zeroes in on you.
He slurs out your name, glaring like he’s trying to get his eyes to focus before they roll dramatically, and he runs a hand through his messy hair.
“Jesus, what do you want?”
“Maybe for you to have some respect, or is that a little too much to ask?”
“Could you give us a minute?” He asks the girl in front of him, who scowls at you before walking off, shouldering past you to exit the kitchen as you stare Jack down. “Why are you being such a psycho?”
“I’m sick of you messing Ellie around, Hughes, I’m not gonna just stand around and let you play with her heart like she means nothing to you anymore.”
“She’s not even here,” he scoffs, “She won’t find out unless you tell her.”
“And you think I won’t? She’s my friend, Jack, we tell each other everything.”
“Yeah? She tell you how she’s into Cole?”
“No. Because she isn’t.” You’d cleared that up with her a while ago, asking her straight up if something was going on - and she had said no. She wouldn’t lie to you.
“Then why do I keep getting told that she is? Why is everyone seeing them out together all the time? Why is she texting him tonight and not me?”
“Maybe ‘cause you’re making it your mission to stick your tongue down other girls throats all the time. This entire summer, you’ve done nothing but avoid your feelings so much that maybe she thinks you’re not into her. Maybe you need to pull your head out of your ass and talk to her like a grown fucking adult and stop playing stupid games with her heart.”
“You’re one to talk.”
“And you should be fucking listening. If you keep messing her around, you’ll lose her for good,” you threaten, with a jab of a pointed finger into his chest.
Jack looks flushed, cheeks pink, lips puffy, eyes red-rimmed and hair a mess as he looks back at you - and it’s like he’s functioning in slow motion, you can practically see the cogs turning in his inebriated brain as he comes up with some way to jab back, some way to make you hurt the way the thought of Ellie leaving does to him, just to avoid admitting you’re right.
“What, like how you keep messing my brother around?”
“Excuse me?” You scoff, stepping back when he jabs a finger at you.
“You heard me,” he snarls, “Leading him on like some lovesick puppy while you couldn’t care less about him.”
“Is that what he said?”
“No, funnily enough he won’t even talk to me about you,” Jack’s glare sends a shiver down your spine, one that overrides the buzz of pride at him following your instruction - you know this level of animosity comes from the swirling of intoxication and frustration, he doesn’t actually hate you, the two of you have gotten on somewhat in the past couple of weeks, despite him making out otherwise, but this is different. This makes you feel small, like a speck of something fragile, ready to be stomped and crushed under his irate foot. And it’s not the kind of small you usually like. The kind of small where you compare yourself to the bigger picture. No, this hurts. Aches. Itches in a way that you need to relieve, immediately. “But I bet that’s your doing, because that’s how toxic you are, making it so he can’t even confide in his brother about his feelings. Feelings that you just want to stampede all over like they’re nothing. Break his heart like it’s some kind of sport.”
That isn’t true.
That’s not who you are.
That’s not what you’re doing, not what you want.
You know how it feels to have someone break your heart like that, you’d never do that to Luke.
“Go fuck yourself, Jack.” Is all you can mutter out in defence of yourself before you’re shouldering past him, barging through the uninterested crowd and stomping out of the kitchen.
You think it’s the need to feel bigger that has you poking your head into every room in search of him - the person who had ingrained the notion of needing to feel bigger to feel better to your memory - only able to find comfort in a mop of messy curls that sits on top of a head higher than the rest. It’s what has you grasping at his hand when you do find him outside on the deck, dragging him wordlessly - and thankfully enough, without protest - back through the rest of his house, and to his room before you push him down onto the bed, instructing him to move up and sit against the headboard before you straddle his lap.
You kiss away his questions, fingers clumsily working at the buttons of his shirt until you can tear it off, swallowing down his confusion into your own mouth as he shrinks into your advances.
When you start to grind down into him is when he gains back some level of consciousness, large hands grasping at your waist and pushing until your lips part with a loud smack. And you’re both breathless, panting against each others mouths as he tries to figure you out, looking up at you with a furrowed brow and swollen lips.
“What’s going on?” He asks, eyes darting around you in concern.
Concern that makes you feel larger than life - makes your chest expand and your heart swell and your lungs fill with so much air that you feel like you might float away. To have someone look at you like that, care about you like that, want you for more than what bare bones you’re offering to him, what everyone else wants you for, it makes you feel gigantic.
Like a hot air balloon, carried to far away lands by the flames of his affections.
And if they shut off, you’ll drop into oblivion. Breaking suddenly from the airy mechanics that keep you afloat, plunging at great speeds until you inevitably hit the earth with an almighty, painful splat.
You never did like falling.
“I want you.”
His face scrunches a little as he thinks - thinks a little too hard for someone who’s been pursuing you all summer - and before he can question it, you reach for the hem of your top, pulling it off until you’re left in just your lacy bra, your skirt riding up as your legs fall to either side of his hips.
It’s the most you’ve ever given him aside from being around him in your bikini and the one time you had changed and he hadn’t turned around quick enough, and before you can feel self conscious about it, you feel his eyes rake down the long expanse of your bare skin.
And the way he looks at you now makes you feel even bigger - a hunger in his eyes that tells you he could spend the rest of his time on earth working his way through every inch of you, savouring whatever parts of you that you’ll let him get a taste of, and he’ll never let you go.
“Please?” You’re already technically on your knees, what harm can begging do if it just makes him do something?
You don’t want to talk about it like you know he’s about to ask, don’t want to have to explain why you sought him out, why, for once, you didn’t care that people might see the two of you holding hands, you marching him to his bedroom and him following like exactly what Jack had said - a lovesick puppy.
You just want him. Want to feel bigger. Want to feel wanted.
Want to give in to the part of you that has been dying to fold to him all summer, to let him close that gap, to break down the barriers you’ve been desperately guarding.
He cranes his neck to press a sweet kiss to your lips - one lacking the intensity from before, but not the adoration he always manages to pack in there - the kind that twists at your gut until you can’t take it anymore.
“Please,” you whisper against his lips, kissing him again. “Give me something to hold onto when you’re gone.”
You figure if you use his own words against him - words uttered teasingly, but truthfully, earlier - he’ll give in.
The thought of losing this, of him leaving and finding something better, of distance being wedged between you for the first time all summer and finally giving him clarity, making him see you for what everyone else thinks you are.
Maybe if you give him what he really wants he’ll hold on a little longer.
It’s not like you don’t want it, too.
“You only had the one drink?” He asks, responding with fervour, the pressure of his kiss starting to build. “The one I got you?”
“Didn’t even finish it,” you kiss him again, “Stone cold sober,” and again, fingers trailing between you to work at the button on his jeans, “Want you now.”
“Yeah,” he lifts his hips and helps you pull his pants down, a clumsy shuffle to temporarily part while he wriggles them off, “Want you, too.” He mutters before leaning in to kiss at the corner of your mouth, “Wanted you for so long.”
There’s a voice inside that itches to tell him, I know, but it’s quickly shut up by another - a voice that’s louder, a voice you can’t ignore anymore when it comes to Luke.
A voice that tells you, you know nothing.

please don’t ever become a stranger (whose laugh i could recognize anywhere)
k. bakugou x reader
moments in the year where katsuki realized he’s in love with you. happy new years 🤍
inspired by new years day
february 14
he’s driving you home after a date, one hand on the steering wheel, the other intertwined with yours. city lights pass through the windows in a blur, the road long enough for you to tell it’ll be a long way home.
he’s stressed, a little. you can tell by how he grips your hand, and the way he seems not totally focused on anything in particular. you still feel safe- he’s a great driver- but his inner thoughts aren’t lost on you. normally, he’s the toast of the town, and you’re right there with him. he’s aware of his reputation, and the love he gets from fans. but with fame comes the public eye, and even he isn’t immune to it.
he’s been striking out more lately. his abrasive attitude that you love isn’t always loved by everyone. his slip ups and mistakes seem to make headlines more than his achievements. its grating on him, and he hopes you don’t notice.
but you do, because thats what you do for people you love.
1. 2. 3. you squeeze his hand three times. i love you, it spells out. i’ll love you when you’re at your best and worst. no matter what.
at first, he thinks you’re just playing with his hand, crimson eyes flickering over to you and then back to the road. exactly 2 seconds later, he gets what you really mean.
1. 2. 3. 4. he grips your hand back. i love you, too. he says, without actually saying anything. i will never not love you. you’re the only person who stays for me no matter what. and for that, i love you.
unspoken words you both know to be true that night.
april 20
he doesn’t really celebrate his birthday, but his friends and colleagues always insist on it. he snarls, scoffing, finding it all pompous and unnecessary, until he sees your starry eyes planning his special day. he can’t say no to you.
he wasn’t expecting much when he unlocked the door to his apartment. he had a feeling you’d throw him a surprise party, but he didn’t think you’d gather his old classmates in his home to celebrate with him.
he’s stunned for a moment, until his lips curve into a begrudging smile. a room full of people, on his birthday, and the first person he looks for is you.
“thanks, dumbass.” he murmurs, a few drinks in while his arm finds your waist. his smile is like sunshine, though you rarely see it when its genuine. you pretend not to notice the ‘ews’ and laughs from your peers when he presses a long kiss to your cheek.
he has work tomorrow morning. he’ll definitely regret drinking as much as he did. he decides he’ll take an advil and get it over with.
he knows how much he’s loved you from the moment he entered that party. he realizes it more when you call in for him the next day, his hangover palpable, with you by his side.
“you didn’t have to do that.” he groans, but he isn’t annoyed. its a little embarrassing being taken care of, but he isn’t complaining when its with you.
“its just one day, babe.” you hum, holding his hand, sitting on the edge of the bed next to him. “you deserved the break.”
“pro-heroes don’t get breaks.” he adds.
“okay… but i missed you.” you smile a little, trying to win him over.
you already have.
june 26
katsuki is used to criminal activity. when he hears about it, he keeps a level head and a resting bitch face, ready to deal with whatever comes his way. all that rationality is thrown out the window when he hears you had been caught up in it and injured.
he runs through every medic, frantically searching for you like his life depends on it. he’s imagining every worst case scenario, heart beating out of his chest and snapping at anyone who asks whats wrong.
“katsuki!” you finally call out to him. he turns and is relieved to see you’ve only managed a broken arm. the sigh of relief that leaves his lips is a testament to how much he cares, arms wrapping around you, not giving a single fuck who sees.
“are you okay, idiot? are you hurt anywhere else?” his eyes scan you for injuries. you physically have to cup his face and bring his attention back to whats important: you’re okay. and so is he.
“i’m fine.” you almost laugh, savouring his rare moment of vulnerability. he has things to do, reporters to talk to and damage to control, but you’re the priority right now. you’re what he loves the most.
you never know how much you care until you think you’re going to lose it.
september 12
being a gruff, muscular, powerful hero, katsuki think’s he’s too strong for panic attacks. he’s also wrong.
he hopes you’re in a deep enough sleep not to notice his pacing. to him, the room is on fire, only the smoke is invisible and only he can feel the flame.
his breathing picks up, pains in his chest while the tremors set in. his heart races, nauseous and sweating while he tries to get his bearings. all of his heroes die all alone, just like he will.
“just breathe.”
he’s commanded by you, not even realizing you woke up. he feelings your touch on him, taking his hand and placing it overtop your chest. he wants to ask you when you woke up, or for how long you’ve been watching him, but he can’t seem to ground himself enough for that.
“its okay, kats.” you coo, pulling him into a hug, as if shielding him from his own anxiety. “just breathe. you’re safe here.”
he can save you from villains and threats, be your knight in shining armour, your hero. you, on the other hand, can save him from himself. and thats the moment he knows he’ll love you for as long as he breathes. even if you were to one day become a stranger to him- his heart would recognize you anywhere.
december 31st - 5 minutes to midnight
there’s glitter on the floor, polaroids tossed around lazily. kirishima’s annual new years party wouldn’t be complete without you and your boyfriend, katsuki, in attendance. people drink and blast music, reminiscing on this past year. in just 5 minutes, the world would begin again.
he could be with his friends, drunk on love, laughter, and booze. he could relish in the fame of his success and achievements. but all of that seems so small, so trivial, when he sees you out on the balcony, alone.
“idiot?” he peers out, seeing you leaning over the railing, looking out at the stars. “what’re you doing out here? everyone’s gonna start counting down.”
“hey.” you hum as he walks over to you. his arm so naturally finds its way around your waist, like it belongs there. loving you is like breathing for him.
“you know 5 years ago today, you just graduated.” you reminisce, watching his red eyes grow contemplative.
“yeah? so?” he utters, not getting your point.
“nothing, just… so many people spend new years focusing on whats ending. and thats good. i just… when i look at you, katsuki… i think of my future.”
his heart swells at that.
“damn it, idiot.” he huffs, forehead resting against yours, a dumb smile on his face. “my life has been better with you. everything has been better since you.”
you both hear the sounds of cheering, counting down to midnight. time ceases when katsuki looks at you, whole centuries passing when he holds your gaze. you melt his tough exterior and the ashes of his ambition. you become his dreams, his everything.
“10!”
“i never want you to be a stranger, ever.”
“9!”
“i wanna laugh with you for the rest of my life.”
“8!”
“i wanna hold on to every memory with you.”
“7!”
“this is so fucking corny.”
“6!”
“i know, i don’t care.”
“5!”
“i’d spend all my midnights with you.”
“4!”
“and all my new years days.”
“you hate cleaning up after parties, though.”
“i can’t hate anything when its with you. i love you, [y/n].”
“i love you too, katsuki.”
“3!”
“2!”
“1!”
january 1st
the truth is, he has always known he’s loved you. he’s never needed the reminder, like its the one sure thing in his life. for as long as he lives, he’ll be cleaning up bottles with you on new years day.

tell me you love me
a/n: i've seen a lot of oblivious!reader x sevika but i thought it would be fun to do a oblivious!sevika x reader. someone has probably done this trope before but here's my take on it!
word count: 1.7k
warning(s): oblivious!sevika - slight angst - councilor!sevika - insecurity (on both parts) - thieram is a real one - mention of sevika being a regular at the brothel - i'm bad at dialogue my apologies everyone - not proof read - rushed - hope this doesn't suck too bad
The bar was quiet, save for a few customers sitting in the far corners, nursing their drinks at a lenient pace. After the war, Zaun didn't feel the same, there was an air of expectancy, like nothing was truly over. Though, you thought, defeating Noxus and whatever Arcane deviantcy was a win in your book. You wiped down the counter, humming a soft song as you thought about everything. You had thought that once everything was over, you could finally officially reveal your feelings for Zaun's scary lady, Silco's former right hand lady - Sevika. However, it seemed that since she had been given a seat on the council, she was never at your bar anymore. Over the years you had tried to subtly show Sevika the true extent of your feelings, inviting her over for a private drink, only for her to show up with her gaming buddies and you feeling ridiculous in the new dress you had bought.
Once, you thought she had finally realized what you were asking, her soft smile when she accepted your invitation to your apartment for dinner sending butterflies ablaze in your stomach. You remembered the hours you spent before she arrived, cooking and cleaning, fussing over your outfit and your hair, thankful you had taken enough time off to fully prepare everything. You remember setting up the table, putting the finishing touches on the centerpiece when you heard her loud knock at the door. The butterflies in your stomach got so intense that when you opened your door and saw Sevika standing there, they died just as quickly as they came.
"Hey, Y/N, thanks for inviting me over. gods know I'm starved right now."
You remember merely nodding, silent as you blinked back tears, moving to let Sevika in as she obliviously rambled on about her day. You loved how open she was with you, her carefully placed demeanor cracking to show her true personality, something you wore as an honor. Now, you thought that she saw you only as a friend, a shoulder to cry - more like complain - on. You remember vividly how her newly cut was hair mussled, her shirt and neck stained with lipstick, how her own lips seemed to be swollen. Each little detail sent a stabbing feeling into your heart, making you feel numb as Sevika took in the carefully placed dinner table.
"Damn, this is nice. Is anyone else expected to come?" She asked as she plopped down into her chair, manspreading her legs comfortably in a way that you still, in an annoyed realization, found incredibly attractive. You shook your head, the feeling of rejection and disappointment weighing on your shoulders.
"Just you." It came out as a confession but Sevika took it as an answer. You remember the rest of the night being a blur, you had come to some kind of strange acceptance.
This event was just before everything went down and now you were ready to put everything behind you. You knew Sevika still frequented the Brothel, albeit more secretively now that she sat on the Council, so you were determined to catch her whether when she was arriving or leaving one day to firmly expose yourself. You knew she had no interest in being with you, her dodging all your advances over the years had made that clear enough, but you couldn't live with the weight of your feelings bearing down on you. If you could just let her know now, you could finally move on.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sevika sat sullenly in her seat, barely registering that the meeting was over. Shoola gentley nudged her, breaking her out of whatever place her mind had taken her. The councilor smiled at Sevika, gesturing her to join her as they left the Council room. Sevika joined reluctantly, still feeling out of place within the group of people who she had previously hated so intensely.
"Any plans today? Someone to go back home to?" Shoola's question rattled Sevika, who found herself answering with a shake of her head and a kiss of her teeth.
"Nope. Guess no one's up to being with me."
Shoola would have replied with an encouragement, would it not be for the exasperated explanation that sounded from behind them.
"You've got to be kidding me!"
Both Shoola and Sevika spun around to see Thieram, one of the Last Drop's bartenders, holding a box of books from Piltover's library he borrowed from Vi. Sevika raised an eyebrow at him, a silent question.
"That's just ridiculous!" He adjusted the box to wave an incredulous hand at Sevika, almost spilling the box, "Seriously! Please don't kill me, but you seriously can't believe no one has ever showed an interest in you!"
Shoola laughed, crossing her arms.
"Are you wanting to announce something?"
Sevika had an uncomfortable expression on her face, like she would rather be anywhere than this situation. Thieram shook his head a little too hard, setting his face in a false bravado.
"N-no, but do you know how many shifts I've been through where Y/N can only talk about how nice your new haircut looks? How much she likes your piercing - a little too much if you ask me -? How many times she's asked you out only for you to make her cry in the break room before plastering on a smile to serve you and your gaming buddies a drink?" He seemed out of breath before he continued, starting to walk backwards, away from the woman who was now staring intensely at the young man, "Either you're incredibly oblivious, please stop looking at me like that, or you've been playing with my friends feelinsg for years. She's planning on telling you her feelings soon, I really should stop talking, so that she can move on."
Sevika felt time stop around her as she absorbed what Thieram was saying. For years she had harbored a crush against you, something that grew and flourished over the years as she grew closer to you, experienced more and more of your kindness and strength. She had thought you had only wanted to be friends, you had constantly invited her over to talk or have a drink but - oh. Oh.
Sevika, with this new realization, pushed past Thieram, leaving him standing there with an amused Shoola. If what he was saying was true, she couldn't handle you moving on, she had lost so many already.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You had just finished your closing duties when the doors to the Last Drop burst open, revealing a frantic looking Sevika. You barely had time to open your mouth before Sevika was behind the bar, standing so close to you that your back was pressed up against the counter and Sevika's breath was warm against your cheeks. It was silent for a moment as she caught her breath, her eyes staring deeply into yours. You started to talk but Sevika beat you to it, her words coming out in a rush.
"Do you love me?"
Her blunt question made you freeze, your eyes widening and your hands starting to shake. Sevika swallowed, leaning her head forward to lightly set her forehead against yours, taking a deep breath. Her arms came to rest on either side of you, the mechanics of her left arm whirring silently. Her breath was just as shaky as her words as she continued, this time whispering.
"Tell me you love me."
For a moment, all you could do was breathe. Here was Sevika, the woman you had loved for years, the woman you had convinced yourself never saw you like that, practically begging for you to love her. With soft hands, you cradled Sevika's face, smiling at how she subconsciously nuzzled into your palm. You felt years worth of tension leave her shoulders as she further leaned into you, her arms now wrapping around your waist as a tight hug. In a moment of adrenaline, you pulled Sevika in for a kiss. It was a mere brush of your lips, a breath of waiting passed before Sevika was pulling you closer, her lips claiming yours in a kiss that stole your breath. It seemed like time had stopped around the two of you before you pulled away, Sevika chasing your lips slightly. You pressed two fingers against her lips, chuckling softly at her confused expression.
"If I tell you, what can I expect your response to be?" Your question was playful, yet you still held your breath. Sevika looked at you incredulously, scoffing before pushing your hand away from her mouth and leaning in to where when she spoke, her lips brushed against yours.
"What do you think?"
You glared playfully, leaning backwards and crossing your arms, ignoring how uncomfortable this new position was.
"I think even if I yelled it from the rooftops you would still think we were only friends."
Sevika had the decency to look sheepish, biting her lip before putting a hand on your back to pull you close once more.
"I'll listen this time, I promise." Her words were soft and warm, incredibly sincere as they comforted you like a hug. You let her brush her nose against yours as you smiled, wrapping your arms around her neck to rest on her shoulders. You pulled her close, so that now your lips brushed against her ear as you spoke.
"I love you." You whispered, slight fear tinging your words, afraid this could all be a dream, or worse, a sick joke. It was like a switch went off, Sevika's shy demeanor melting away, her eyes filled with fire as she lifted you up to sit on the counter, her lips claiming yours. This kiss was different than the first, deeper and more intense, fueled with your confession. Sevika pulled away, her forehead once again leaning against yours as she spoke.
"I've been an idiot for years," you hummed in agreement, "I hurt you with my obliviousness, I didn't think you could ever return my feelings."
Hope blossomed in your chest, understanding what she was trying to say.
"Thieram told me you were wanting to move on and I-" she paused, leaning back ever so slightly so that she could look into your eyes, "I don't want that. I want you."
You could tell she wanted to say more, confess more, but you understood why she held back, the walls she held around herself were so carefully constructed.
Smiling, you nodded, running a hand through her hair.
"You have me."
a/n: and this kinda sucked ik but i had to write something or else my mind was gonna explode. thanks for reading!

𝓙ayce 𝓗cs*ੈ✩‧₊˚
gn!reader x jayce talis
request; none
word count; 500~
cw; sfw + nsfw hcs (the nsfw is not very descriptive)
a/n; i have an unhealthy obsession w this man.
"Jayce is alive!" I say as they take me into the white room.
sfw;
𖦹 Jayce is basically your personal cheerleader, or in other words just a really supportive partner. He's always there to give you encouragement when you need it and finding ways to make your day a little more durable. 𖦹 Jayce is very big on PDA, he loves to be hands on, and he isn't ashamed of it one bit. Whether it's holding hands while walking on the pavement, an arm around your waist as he guides you, or a quick kiss on your temple when no-one is watching. He just loves the idea of showing you how much he loves and appreciates you through touch. 𖦹 Even though Jayce is a busy man he absolutely adores spending time with you, especially over cozy nights snuggled up to one another. He also loves to ramble on and on about Hextech and his new ideas to you, he gets so into it, big toothy smile, illuminating eyes, and he often stumbles over his words when he realises you're actually listening. 𖦹 Jayce has a soft spot for spoiling you. From intricately designed gowns to small trinkets that remind him of you, he loves surprising you with tokens of affection. 𖦹 While he trusts your ability to handle yourself, Jayce can be fiercely protective (not overwhelmingly), especially in tense or dangerous situations. He’ll always position himself as your shield if needed, there is no way he is letting you get hurt on his watch. 𖦹 He has a great sense of humor and loves to tease you lightly. He thrives on making you laugh and can’t resist a little playful banter. Jayce also enjoys gossiping about the Councillors at some rooftop with glasses of alcohol in both your hands. (it's even better if you're a councillor too.) 𖦹 Jayce is a very thoughtful and romantic man, meaning he likes to plans surprises—think candlelit dinners, bouquets of flowers “just because,” and he enjoys playing them off nonchalantly. 𖦹 He’s not just about grand gestures; Jayce is also very attentive to the little things. He remembers your likes, dislikes, and the stories you’ve shared, making you feel cherished and unconditionally loved.
nsfw;
𖦹 Jayce is an incredibly passionate lover, always focused on ensuring you’re comfortable, satisfied, and utterly adored. He always makes sure you find pleasure before he even thinks about himself. 𖦹 He loves taking his time, savoring every touch, kiss, and sigh that you give him. Jayce is all about eye contact and whispered affirmations, making each moment deeply intimate. 𖦹 His strength isn’t just in the way he holds you effortlessly against him—it’s in the way his fingers trail along your skin, leaving goosebumps in their wake. 𖦹 Jayce adores your body and isn’t shy at all about expressing it. He’ll kiss every inch of you, murmuring praises as he goes, making you feel like the most beautiful person in the world. 𖦹 After intimacy, Jayce is the type to pull you close, tracing lazy patterns on your back while murmuring about how much you mean to him. Cuddling you is non-negotiable. 𖦹 Jayce is a confident switch, though he mostly leans towards being a sub!dom. He always makes sure your comfortable, with unwavering respect for your boundaries and desires. 𖦹 He notices what makes you tick and learns exactly how to touch, kiss, and hold you to leave you breathless. Jayce takes immense pride in knowing he’s the only one who can make you feel this way.

If being in the games was hard for anyone, it would be for Hyun-Ju. Looking for acceptance in a place where you're fighting for your life isn't ideal.
The only comfort and trust she could find was in you and Young-Mi. You felt bad for her as nobody wanted to team up with her or really talk to her. It would be nice to get out of your comfort zone.
For the second game, you teamed up with Hyun-Ju, an old lady and her son, a younger girl named Young-Mi. You survived thank God, but still wanted to know Hyun-Ju more.
Back in the dormitory, she was comfortable telling you and the team about her identity and her whole backstory.
"I accept you Hyun-Ju."
Those words stuck with Hyun-Ju. It's all she ever wanted, to be accepted for who she is.
"You're safe here, you have us."
It was like the family and love have been waiting for her in this place. She just had to look more deeper.
Unfortunately, that comfort wasn't going to last long. For the third game, it was mingle. When the carousel stops spinning, there will be a number on the screen announced and you have to form groups of that number and lock yourself in a room before the timer runs out.
Hyun-Ju made sure to stay with you and Young-Mi, both of you alive and safe. Everything was going well until one round.
You, Hyun-Ju and many other players were running to get to a room safely. Unfortunately, Young-Mi accidentally got pushed and couldn't make it to the door on time.
Hyun-Ju notices this and tries to save her. You looked at the timer, knowing there wouldn't be enough time to save her and you and all the others in the room would be dead.
Another player, Myung-Gi goes in and locks the door. Young-Mi rushes to the door and cries for Hyun-Ju.
Hyun-Ju is yelling for her and the whole thing made you feel bad.
Bang
Young-Mi drops the ground and is unresponsive. Hyun-Ju grabs Myung-Gi by his shirt and starts yelling at him.
"It's your fault! I could have saved her!"
"If you did, you would be dead, and all of us would. What's better 1 dead person or a group of 6 people dead?" Myung-Gi exclaims
He had a point but you just knew Hyun-Ju wanted Young-Mi to live. You also wanted her to live as well.
After the game was over, Hyun-Ju was silent walking back to the dormitory.
You thought it would be best to talk to her as you are starting to become closer with her.
"Hyun-Ju? Are you ok?" Reaching out to put a hand on her shoulder, Hyun-Ju turns to you.
"I could have saved her. I should have saved her. She didn't deserve to die." Hyun Ju looks down in shame
"If you went to save her, you would have been dead too then."
"She wanted out of the game Y/N. If I pressed X, instead of O, maybe it would have helped, I should have left the room-"
"It was a hard decision, I know and there wasn't a lot of time left. I wish she made it too, but there's nothing you really can do about it"
"She was one of the first people besides you that really accepted me."
"She would also want you to keep moving forward and get out of here. I do too."
Hyun Ju turns to you
"We'll get out of here and you'll get that surgery, and you'll move to where you want to go. I have faith in you Hyun Ju."
"You do?"
"Yes I do, and you should too"
There was a moment of silence between you too. Hyun-Ju was taking in what you said. For the next vote, she was determined to keep going and survive not only for Young-Mi, but also for you.
"Y/N, can I tell you something?"
"It's like you're the only exception in this place, out of everyone here, I'm glad to have met you and Young-Mi."
"I'm glad too Hyun-Ju, I'm glad too."
She holds out her hand and you take it. You gave it a tight squeeze as reassurance everything will be ok. And it will be.
As long as Hyun-Ju had you, everything and anything felt possible.

one step at a time
masterlist
summary: after being rejected by you, the person who managed to catch Rafe's attention in a way no one else ever had, he goes spiraling into his addiction even more. you happened to be the only one who was able to pull him out of the turmoil in which he had buried himself in the last years.
words count: 6.5k
warnings: drug addiction, withdrawls, mutual pinning, angsty with happy ending
a/n: i've been writing and rewriting it since august and i still don't know whether i like the final result or not, so i'm ready for your feedback. aaaand happy new year to all of you, my precious followers. hope this one will bring you only the best💘
You felt your skin getting hotter under the intense gaze of a particular guy who had been starring at you whenever you two were in the same room. The one who was present in your head all the time, no matter how hard you tried to get distracted and convince yourself that it was not the person that you needed in your life.
Rafe Cameron.
He was in a circle of his so-called friends, mostly not paying attention to them and instead watching you. You didn’t know when it started to happen—when the looks that you gave to each other started to get longer and more frequent, when your eyes started to search around the rooms until they found what they wanted, when the small talks that you had during official Kook’s events became so awkward and nervous.
Your fathers worked together for a few years, so you weren’t friends, more like acquaintances who occasionally attended the same galas and parties, where you usually ended up in the same circle of people. And who, well, might have developed a secret crush on each other.
The thing is, you didn’t know why you felt that way. Rafe was certainly not the nicest person on the island, yet you didn’t have a real reason to hate him either. He was a menace; he was spoiled and thrived on attention from others. But Rafe was undeniably hot, so damn attractive without even trying, and you just wanted him. Your whole body was gravitating towards him, no matter how you tried to get this bullshit out of your head.
Still, you knew for a fact that no matter how much even his presence in the room affected you, seeing him do countless and countless lines at every party pushed you away from him more than anything else ever could. You were not the one to ever judge people for their addictions, but seeing many times what drugs did to people, you didn’t want to deal with it at all. Remembering the first time you noticed it, the first time Sarah cried because of how her brother became so reckless and that she was scared for him, a shiever ran down your spine.
You excused yourself and left from inside the house when the air became to thick with the smell of smoke, alcohol, and sweat from people all around you and when your thoughts started to wander in the familiar direction. You found a semi-quiet space at the balcony on the second floor, but it didn’t take too long until someone else went there, as you heard footsteps approaching you.
“What are you doing here alone?” You instantly turned around at the sound of Rafe’s smooth voice, only to catch him looking at you up and down with a gleam in his eyes. You heart raced, almost breaking out of your ribcage, while you tried to visibly not freak out.
“Nothing, just needed some fresh air.” You shrugged. “And why are you here?”
“Honestly?” He chuckled, seemingly feeling nervous, as his right hand started rubbing the back of his neck. “I followed you.”
“Oh…”
“Yeah, kinda wanted to talk to you alone for a long time.” He stepped closer, mostly looking at the floor and licking his lips. You didn’t know whether it was the chill air or the fact that Rafe’s presence had a weird influence on you, but you shivered. “You’re so pretty tonight, y’know? I mean, always. Thought I could ask you to hang out sometime. Like without shit tons of people around us?”
Your eyes followed the movements of his slightly trembling hands and the realization that he was high again made your heart sink. It were drugs speaking, you were sure that he wouldn’t have done it with a sober mind, so you just pursed your lips at the bitter feeling in your chest.
Rafe was almost jittery, either from finally asking you out or the powder that was currently flooding his system — he didn’t even know that himself. He wanted to ask you out for ages, always thinking about the way you pulled his attention like a magnet, the way he craved you more with every passing day, but it seemed like there was never a good moment for that.
“Rafe…” You breathed out his name, your eyes finally finding his. Pupils dilated, almost covering the pretty blue color, and the look so distant, weird, as if he wasn’t even fully there. “I can’t. This is wrong. I don’t want to do it like that.”
“You-you’re looking at me. I know I’m not fucking crazy. You look at me the same way I look at you, don’t bullshit me, Y/N.” His eyes narrowed, his throat suddenly dry from the nerves and a hurting feeling of rejection. He stepped closer, which seemed like a way to intimidate you, but you weren't afraid of him, not even in this state of mind.
“I’m not… denying it, okay? I like you, for some reason.” Your cheeks heated, and you started fidgeting with your fingers, but still looking up at him with seriousness and concern. “But I hate your lifestyle, Rafe. Say whatever you want, but this is not normal. You’re high even right now—I see it in your eyes. Will you even remember this party, me, our conversation the next morning?”
Was it anger that was bubbling inside of him right now? Or maybe agitation? Whatever it was, it hurt him deeply, more than he could admit. For the first time ever, Rafe actually, genuinely, became interested in someone, not with the intention of a meaningless hook up, but just because something was pulling him towards you. And, of course, he had to fuck everything up again with his dumb ass desicions.
Who was he kidding, thinking that you wouldn’t care about the coke? You were possibly the sweetest person on the island, despite being a kook, and he had never even heard any rumors about you doing anything illegal. You were just the definition of a rich girl who enjoyed her perfect life on an island, hanging out with your friends, doing your hobbies, and never getting into trouble.
Rafe just wanted to hit his head against the wall from the amount of mixed feelings and thoughts that his poor overstimulated mind was experiencing right now.
“Rafe, please listen and understand what I say. I’m not rejecting you. I’m just saying that I can’t commit to anything if you’re not even fully there. If the situation was different, I would’ve happily accepted it.” His attention was focused on the floor, but from the way his jaw was clenching while you were talking, you knew that he was listening. “These people are not your friends, because they let you do that and they do not care. You should stop destroying your mind and your body with drugs while you can.”
You tried to reach out to touch him, but he flinched.
“Yeah, I–I get it. See ya later.” He mumbled under his breath, not even looking at you.
“Rafe, wait! Rafe!” You tried to call out, but he was already gone, mixing in the croud of people in the main room.
You pushed on the button on the doorbell for the third time, but it seemed like Cameron’s house was silent. Rafe’s truck was on the driveway, as was his red bike, so you knew that he must be home.
After that talk with Rafe almost three weeks ago, you only heard about him and caught a few glimpses with his friends at Figure 8. People talked that he had gone even crazier than usual and that Shoupe arrested him twice. You were worried that it might be your fault, but just when you decided to catch Rafe the next time you see him, he vanished for the whole day.
You had to call Sarah to ask what was wrong with her brother, making up a stupid excuse for your sudden interest, and the only thing that she told you was him not getting out of his room and acting weird.
Maybe it was a bad idea to come here uninvited when clearly no one else besides Rafe was home, or because you weren’t even that close, but it was too late to go back when you opened the front door and slowly went up the stairs to his room.
You were in the house a few times already, when your families had their usual gatherings together, so you pretty much knew where you had to look for Rafe. You stopped in front of his door, unsure of your actions, but before you could run away like a child, your hand had already knocked on the door.
The soft groans and mumbling were heard inside, as well as the sound of the bedsheets and something falling on the floor. Your first thought about him having someone over there made your heart drop for a second, but another groan, almost painful, filled you with concern.
“Get—get the fuck away, Sarah. T-told you a million fu-ucking times.” Rafe’s voice was hoarse, and it seemed like he was trembling with the way it shaked. You heard cussing and more groans. He did not sound like himself with those strange pauses and unusual sounds, which made the level of your worry skyrocket. What if he was doing coke in there, or maybe something stronger? His ego must’ve gotten hurt because of your rejection, and now he was putting that shit up his nose again.
“It’s not Sarah, Rafe. Open, please.” You rested your head on the door, listening to the complete silence after your words. He was thinking—you knew that. He was trying to figure something out, and the fact that you didn’t know what was exactly happening frightened you. "Fuck, are you doing it again? I won’t go until you open the door. Rafe, this is not funny!”
You didn’t expect to see what was in front of you. As soon as the door opened, another version of Rafe was looking at you. He was barely standing straight, gripping the side of the door for dear life, shaking like a leaf and sweating. His face was pale, with almost white lips and bloodshot, exhausted eyes.
You gasped, covering your mouth with your hand, but stepped closer to take a hold of his face. He took something worse than cocaine. He’s high again. It’s bad. Your mind immediately went to a dark place, already feeling tears at the brim of your eyes.
That’s when Rafe’s eyes met yours, and you froze in place.
“You are clean.” You said, not asked, breathlessly. Tired, red, and slightly watery, but still clear, eyes looked right at you with a mixture of shame and relief. He licked his lips a few times, probably dehydrated, trying to stay focused on you despite feeling too sick to stand up straight. “Oh my god, Rafe, I thought—What's happening?”
When he didn’t respond to you, with a new wave of confidence, you pushed him back into the darkness of the room, closing the door behind you and looking around. It was a mess, but no empty bottles, white powder, or random credit cards were seen, and you sighed with relief.
Rafe was barely holding himself up. His body was fighting against him, craving that poisonous relief again. He swayed on his legs, suddenly feeling way too hot again, even though his skin was covered in goosebumps. It started to become more than he could handle, but another reminder that you were, in fact, right in front of him came in the form of your hands holding his face.
Your soft eyes were searching for something in him while he tried to focus on your face. He thought that maybe he started hallucinating because, why else would you be there? Rafe leaned forward as his face curled in pain. You hummed in response, taking some of his body weight on yourself. Your hands stayed on his face, while his own trembling ones fell on your waist for some kind of support.
At first, he thought that he was mad at you. After you rejected him, when he finally found power in himself to talk to you at that party, he was furious. He came back to his friends, immediately pulling out a plastic bag from his pocket and emptying it on the table in front of him. He inhaled more than he needed, hurt and angry from what you said to him. It blocked his mind for some time as everything around got muffled and blurry. His heart was pounding, his breath shallow, but his mind spun faster than he could keep up with. Every word you’d said echoed in his head, sharper and more painful each time.
It went on like that for some time, and at one point Rafe couldn’t even figure out what day it was. Everything was just a blur of parties, his coke buddies, and countless lines on every surface possible. It was bad, and at the back of his mind he knew that he was spiraling somewhere he wouldn’t be able to get out of, but then again, he had no one to try for. Ward didn’t care as long as Rafe didn’t cause any problems; his sisters gave him stares that he thought were either pity or disgust, as you... you weren’t there to fully see it all, so he did everything to prove God knows what, knowing damn well that it was hurt.
The coke gave him fleeting moments of numbness, but it never lasted. The hurt always came back, heavier and sharper, gnawing at him when the highs faded and the quiet of his thoughts became unbearable.
It all was adding up, until one time Sarah caught him blacked out on the couch besides the pool. He still didn’t know whether it was a game of his mind or it happened actually, but he remembered her faint silhouette, sitting in front of him. She sounded like she was crying, but he wasn’t sure—too high to actually understand. What he remembers were her words, that surprisingly his mind was able to comprehend even in that state. “I thought you were gonna get better. I thought Y/N would be the one to pull you out of this.” Her voice cracked, a mix of sadness and disappointment that cut through the fog in his brain. “But look at you, Rafe. You’re worse than ever.”
Rafe’s vision blurred, though he couldn’t tell if it was from the high or the emotion clawing its way to the surface. He tried to move, to sit up, but his body felt like lead. He hated how vulnerable he felt in that moment, laid out in front of his sister like a broken mess.
“He cares about you, you know. She told me a long time ago how much she liked you. I know you do too. And you could’ve had it all if only you were able to get out of your own way.” Sarah said, her voice soft but edged with frustration. “But instead, you’re here, killing yourself slowly over something that you could fix. Or maybe you’re just too scared to try.”
“I’m not scared.” He gritted his teeth, groaning at the baanging noises in his head.
“Then prove it. Fix your life, Rafe. Until it’s too late.”
He didn't remember what happened after that, but then he woke up with a more clear head, still confused and disoriented. Sarah’s words were hanging at the back of his head.
What was he even trying to prove? To you? To himself? He’d spent so much time running from the pain, from the rejection, from the fear that he hadn’t realized he was running in circles, destroying everything in his path.
Rafe stood shakily, gripping the back of the couch for support. His reflection in the sliding glass door caught his eye, and he barely recognized the person staring back. Bloodshot eyes, hollow cheeks, and a gauntness that hadn’t been there before. It was a version of himself he couldn’t stand to look at anymore.
He wasn’t sure where to start or if he even knew how to fix it, but he knew one thing: Sarah, once, was right. If he didn’t make a change now, it would be too late. Too late for you to ever see him as someone worth caring about again. Too late to prove to himself that he could be better.
Dragging a hand down his face, Rafe took a shaky breath. One step at a time, he thought, Sarah’s voice still echoing in his mind. For the first time in a long time, he felt like he could do it. He didn’t know if it would be enough, but for the first time, he wanted to try.
“It burns. I feel like my body is on fuckin’ fire. It’s in my veins. I can’t take it anymore, Y/N.” Rafe’s eyes flattered, and his breathing became heavier as another wave of heat washed over him. “I don’t wanna take coke again, but shit—-“
“You can, Rafe. I know you can. You’re doing so well. You have to fight it just a little longer.” You ran your thumbs over his cheeks and realized that he was way too hot. “You need to cool off a little. Can you take a cold shower? Can you do that by yourself?” You slightly patted his cheek until his eyes focused back on yours.
“You actually came?” His voice was hesitant, almost fragile, and a sad smile touched your lips.
“I did. I’ll help you, okay?”
“Mhm… Stay here? Please.” He almost begged, leaning into your touch and licking his dry lips again. With your touch still lingering on his face, Rafe stumbled into his private bathroom while you decided to prepare everything for him.
After politely rummaging through the room, you found new bed sheets to replace the old ones. Then you quickly aired the room, brought a couple water bottles from the kitchen downstairs, and turned on only one light to not disturb Rafe and his sensitive mind right now.
As you were cleaning up, you got lost in your thoughts about what had happened in the past few weeks. From Rafe asking you out, then seemingly going crazy because of your rejection, and now his attempt to quit drugs. Not that you didn’t believe in him, but he was so stubborn, and with the amount of problems constantly surrounding him, it wouldn’t be so surprising if he had just ignored you and continued living his own way.
But you wanted him to get clean so badly because you hated the way coke was affecting him. You knew him for a pretty long time now, and you couldn’t miss the changes in his behavior after he started using. You wanted to see the real him, wanted to help him out, no matter how cliche it sounded.
You hated that he was so careless about his own body and mind that he willingly put that shit up his nose again and again, thinking that it would change anything. You had feelings for Rafe, you did for a long time, no matter how many people openly said that he was a disaster and a big problem. One thing that you knew for sure was that if he really wanted to try, then you would support him.
You heard the bathroom door creak open and turned to see Rafe leaning against the frame. He looked exhausted, his damp hair falling into his eyes, his skin pale but no longer feverish. He wore a fresh pair of sweatpants, the towel he had used slung loosely around his shoulders. His expression was a mix of vulnerability and shame, like he wasn’t sure he deserved the care you were giving him.
“Hey.” You said softly, walking over to him. “You feeling any better?”
He nodded faintly, his eyes meeting yours. “A little.” He admitted, though his voice was hoarse. “Thanks for… all this.”
You shook your head. “You don’t have to thank me. I just want to make sure you’re okay.” Rafe’s movements were a little slower than usual when he came closer to you, as if he craved your presence around him. “Just made you a fresh bed. I also brought some water because you’re probably dehydrated. You should try to fall asleep, and I’ll stay here if you want to.” You softly smiled, not missing the way his eyes were glued to your lips, as if he were trying to understand you better.
“Yeah—shit, I mean okay.” Rafe started breathing heavily again, shaking his head to clear the fog and trying to stop his hands from shaking.
In a few minutes, you managed to get you both into his bed, with you sitting against the headboard and Rafe’s head comfortably placed on the pillow on your lap. He was facing you, so you could see the way his eyes were flattering while he tried to control himself.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” You asked quietly, mindlessly running your hands through his long hair.
“Didn’t think that you would care about it, ‘cause you clearly said no to me.” He shrugged, while one of his hands sneaked under the pillow on your legs and touched your thigh. It wasn’t sexual in any way, but it gave Rafe some kind of comfort.
“I care about you. You are my friend.”
“I don’t wanna be your friend, Y/N.”
You shook your head at his stubbornness, sliding your fingers down the side of his face. “I know, but we are. At least for now.” Rafe scoffed, tightening the grip on your thigh and trembling as another wave of chills washed over his body. “Sh-h. Remember, I didn’t say ‘no’. I said that I can’t commit to anything if you’re not fully here. It would be unfair for both of us. So now you have to get better, and then we’ll work from there.” His tired eyes met yours as if he were trying to understand whether you were serious or not. “When was the last time you used anything?”
“Yesterday morning.”
“Mhm, so it’s your second day already. That’s amazing, Ray.”
Rafe just hummed in response, his mouth suddenly feeling extremely dry. You made him drink some water, trying to convince him that his body needed to get rid of the toxins, and one of the best ways to do it was by drinking a lot of fluids. He was surprisingly obedient, just going back to his previous position with one hand on your leg and facing you.
You two settled into a comfortable silence, both too lost in your own heads and thoughts.
Rafe’s eyes didn’t leave your face. No matter how hard it was for him to focus, he studied your features that were perfectly illuminated by the small lamp. He looked at you countless times, always sneaking glances when no one would notice, but right now he thought that you looked the most beautiful. With a soft smile and eyes and slightly messy hair.
Your hand that was brushing through his dump hair and then touching his face like a feather was almost too good to be true, making Rafe almost forget about the poisonous cravings and unusual reactions of his body. You, you, you—were the only thing on his mind. It was soothing and peaceful. It was calming the storm in his head, so Rafe didn’t want this moment to ever end.
You mindlessly traced lines on Rafe’s face, just admiring the way he seemed to be calm and relaxed, as much as it was possible in his condition, and how it differentiated from the way he had always acted. Maybe it was stupid on your part to get closer with Rafe so easily, because, let’s face it, he could go back to his habits as soon as you stepped out of the house. Everyone around you constantly talked about him being the type of person who would never change to please somebody and who would never put his pride aside.
But no matter how hard you tried, the boy in front of you, the one who looked at you with trust and unusual softness, made your heart beat faster. Your body and mind were screaming that you did the right thing and that he was worth saving, so you couldn’t just walk away and pretend to feel nothing.
As you watched his eyes start to flutter with sleepiness, your own hands slowed down. With the wave of comfort that his company and the atmosphere of the room had brought you, you didn’t notice how you fell asleep.
The next few days were rough for both of you, with Rafe trying to pull his shit together and not give up and with you trying to be as helpful as possible. He struggled a lot. You saw that pretty clearly, but what you also saw was how actually strong Rafe was and how determined he became to get through it.
It was underestimating to say that your help and support meant everything to him. Your words of encouragement, your genuine kindness and willingness to help, your visits and time that you spend in his room—it all made it seem like the efforts were not worthless and that there was a reason to fight.
After almost a week since the day you first fell asleep in Rafe’s bed, your relationship started progressing rapidly. You started actually getting to know each other, and countless text messages and phone calls were proof of that.
He was feeling much better; the worst of the withdrawal symptoms had passed, and the fog in his mind started to lift. It wasn’t perfect, and there were moments where he felt overwhelmed by the weight of everything he had to face, but he was getting there. You could see it in the way he started to smile more often and how his voice had grown steadier on the phone; he became calmer and wasn’t always on the edge of snapping.
Your attraction to Rafe grew rapidly whenever you saw the real version of him, the one that was soft and caring, brought up to the surface—the one that had been buried beneath layers of anger, frustration, and his addiction. The version of him that you knew had always been there but had been clouded for so long. It was these moments, the quiet ones when he was relaxed and open, when his vulnerability came through, that made your heart ache in ways you hadn’t expected.
Sitting on the porch at your house, you thought about Rafe and your time together, and your tummy fluttered with anticipation for what was yet to come. You saw that longing look in Rafe's eyes, and you weren’t one bit surprised because that night he clearly said that your friendship was not enough for him, but you hoped to move slowly.
Even if your breath always hitched whenever he stepped closer or lowered himself to say something to you.
Even if your heart skipped a bit whenever you saw a message with his name next to it.
A notification from your phone brought you back to the present, and as soon as you saw Rafe’s text, you proved yourself right. Your heart skipped a beat again as a shy smile touched your lips.
Café near the beach? My treat. I have something to show you
k, i’ll be there in fifteen
When you got out of the taxi, your eyes scanned the people sitting in the open area under the light of the setting sun, but you didn’t see one particular guy who started messing with your head in the best way possible.
That was until you saw someone turning their head back, as if they sensed you standing there, and your mouth fell open in shock.
You came closer as Rafe stood up from his chair with a smug look on his face, but your eyes were too hungry, taking him in, to even try to be respectful.
“Your hair! Oh god, Rafe! How—why—when?" Your hand reached out to touch his freshly buzzed hair, rubbing it back and forth.
“Texted you as soon as I finished. Just wanted to get rid of the past, y’know.” He shrugged, soft eyes studying your face that was way closer while you inspected his new haircut. “Don’t you like it?”
“It’s hot—I mean, you look hot. It suits you.” You stepped back, looking up and down, trying to memorize a new image. Rafe did look hotter. You suddenly noticed his sharp jawline, strong neck, and shoulders. Damn, he looked bigger. He looked healthier. With that spark in his blue eyes, smoothed, tan skin, and muscles... Oh god, you felt your face getting hotter as your eyes lingered on his arms way too long.
How the hell did you miss his sudden transformation from being a frat guy to a rich golden boy? Was it the effect of his quitting drugs and finally drifting apart with his previous lifestyle and friends?
“It definitely does. Though I'll miss playing with them.” You mumbled, suddenly nervous and shy under his gaze.
“You think I look hot, hm?” He teased, placing a firm yet gentle hand on your lower back.
Touchy, but never overstepping.
“Don’t you know that already?” You bit your lip to hold back a smile, placing your hands on Rafe’s upper arms and looking up through your lashes. You both felt that sudden tickling feeling running through your veins at the eye contact, and it made you both start smiling without any words being said.
“A’ight, I think we should go get something to eat.”
You were going around the people who flooded the beach house that you were currently in. With you constantly spending time with Rafe, your friends almost begged you to the party, only to leave you almost instantly as they got too interested in the experience of alcohol. Not that you were too upset about it, because you still asked Rafe to come with you, and he was more than happy to do anything for you.
The music was too loud in the main room, and you went through the back door to an open yard that led right to the beach and was still full of drunk people, but at least there was some fresh air, and Rafe had already been waiting for you on the bench near the big wooden table with lots of drinks.
You left him just for a few minutes just to use a bathroom, but when you stepped outside, you saw him talking to a guy that you had only seen around when Rafe was doing drugs. Your heart started beating faster at the sight of their obviously not so calm conversation, and you rushed closer to know what was happening.
“Rare? What’s going on?” You stepped beside him, brushing your hand against his stiff back. “What do you want from him?” You pointed a finger at the guy whose name you didn’t bother to remember, and he just snickered back at you.
“Nothing. It’s alright, sweetheart.”
“Quit being a pussy, man. I have the best shit with me today. You’ll get high as a kite.” The guy completely ignored you, only looking at Rafe. You could physically feel the anxiety washing over you at the thought of it happening again, of Rafe just walking away with him right now and leaving you here alone.
You tugged at his arm, trying to catch his attention. “Rafe, you promised. We should go now, please.” He looked back at you, nodding without hesitation and catching your hand to interlace your fingers.
“Told you that I quit it. Go chase someone else, Hugh.”
“Because of this bitch?” The moment this word left his mouth, Rafe’s hands gripped the front of Hugh’s t-shirt, backing him against the table and knocking over a few bottles.
“Call her a bitch one more fucking time and I’ll knock off your teeth.” The guy lifted his hands in surrender, as Rafe was seething with anger, without a doubt meaning what he just said.
You tugged gently on his arm again, trying to ease the situation. “Rafe, let’s just go, please.” You urged, your voice soft but firm, hoping to ground him before things escalated any further.
Rafe’s breath was heavy, his grip on Hugh’s shirt still tight, but his eyes were fixed on you now, softening at your touch. Slowly, he released Hugh, stepping back and running a hand through his hair.
“Yeah, we’re done here.” Rafe muttered, his voice low and controlled, though the anger still simmered beneath the surface. You guided him away from the curious people, who were already whispering about the unfolded scene.
You sat on a wooden bench under a giant tree, with your legs thrown over Rafe’s and almost no distance between you two. It happened so instantly, so naturally, that none of you even thought about it. Rafe had his warm hands laying on your thighs and knees and rubbing your exposed skin in small circles, keeping his eyes down.
A silence lingered between the two of you, and while Rafe was too lost in his head, you took your time to admire him. You spent so much time together over the past month, not because you felt obliged to, but because it was simply amazing. Underneath all of those layers, you found real Rafe, the one who was teasing, who was funny, and the one who was super protective and incredibly caring.
You had never expected to be absolutely down for a man like him, but he was getting so much better with every passing day, never giving you a reason to doubt his intentions. Of course you didn’t forget Rafe’s words about him wanting to be more than your friend, and it lingered over your head every time you caught him staring at you. Though he had never rushed anything, wanting to have that natural bond between you grow stronger and only showing his hidden desires with glances full of admiration and with careful touches.
Rafe’s head suddenly shot up, eyes clear yet narrowed. He smirked, seeing you already looking at him and subconsciously tightening his hold on your leg. He held eye contact for a few seconds, making a smile tug at your lips before he looked away, shaking his head with a deep chuckle.
“What?” You half-whispered, suddenly feeling shy.
“Do you even know what you’re doing to me?” You tilt your head slightly to the side, trying to hold back a smile, but miserably fail when he moves a tiny bit closer and all you can see, feel, and smell is him. “You’re like— I’m— Fuck, you made me stutter like a damn middle schooler…” He was completely infatuated by you, barely able to handle his violently beating heart.
You couldn’t help but laugh softly, the sound warm and full of affection. The way Rafe was fumbling with his words, clearly flustered, made you feel something deep in your chest—a flutter that wasn’t just attraction but something more vulnerable, something you hadn’t expected to feel when you first started spending time together.
“Rafe…” You whispered, leaning in just a little, your voice low and teasing. “You’re so cute when you’re like this.”
His eyes darkened slightly at your words, the smirk on his lips turning into something more sincere, more tender. He took a deep breath, shifting so he was closer, his chest nearly touching yours. His fingers slowly and carefully traced the edge of your skirt, and the way his gaze flickered between your eyes and your lips made the air feel thick with tension.
“Don’t do that.” He said softly, his voice a mixture of amusement and longing. “I’m trying not to make this harder for myself.”
“Trying?” You raised an eyebrow, your teasing smile not leaving your lips. You knew exactly what you were doing, enjoying every second of his reaction. “You’re doing a pretty terrible job of it.”
Rafe exhaled sharply, his hand now resting on your waist, his thumb brushing back and forth slowly as if he were trying to steady himself. You could feel his breath on your skin, warm and erratic. He leaned forward just enough to close the space between your faces, his lips hovering over yours, but not touching. The energy in the air around you suddenly shifted, and you raised your hand to his neck to pull him even closer.
“I don’t want to rush this.” Rafe murmured, his voice low and serious, his forehead gently pressing against yours. “But god… you make it so damn hard to hold back.”
You could feel his heart beating against yours, the rhythm erratic but strong. You didn’t speak for a moment, simply breathing with him, caught up in the quiet intensity of the moment.
“You don’t have to hold back. I’m not going anywhere, Ray.” You said softly, your voice almost a promise.
And with that, the tension seemed to snap, the silent understanding between you both growing stronger. He finally closed the space between you, his lips pressing gently against yours, tentative at first, as if he were still unsure but desperate to feel you. And as the kiss deepened, as he pulled you closer to his body, you were completely lost.
The kiss deepened further, his tongue gently coaxing yours into a slow dance. He was lost in you, the intensity of the moment making everything else fade away. The way you responded, so naturally, so eagerly, only fueled his desire. Rafe’s grip on you tightened, pulling you onto his lap, your bodies fully pressed together now, the heat of his body seeping into yours.
When he finally pulled back, his lips still brushed against yours, his breath shaky and uneven. He looked at you, his eyes full of something deeper than just desire—there was a tenderness, raw and vulnerable, something that had been buried beneath the walls he’d built around himself.
"Thank you." Rafe breathed out, his voice thick with emotion. "For being here. For helping me... through all of this. I don’t think I could have done it without you."
You smiled softly, licking your lips before speaking. “You don’t have to thank me. You should be proud of yourself for being able to do that.” You traced your fingers down the side of his face. “Just promise me you won’t stop trying if something hard happens, okay? You have me, and you have your sixers who care about you too.”
“Okay. I won’t. I promise.” Turning his head to the side to place a kiss on the palm of your hand that lingered on his face, Rafe pulled your body closer to him. There was still a lot to work on, but hidden away from other people, you finally savoured a quiet moment between you two, and for the first time, there was nothing but peace and warmth in both of your hearts.
