Prodigal Son
Free Birds and Fiddlers
cw: referenced past events of the story, including character death and abuse. Polite discussion of Christianity (specifically the story referenced by this chapter's title), mild implied homophobia that gets checked
~~~
Kevin settled himself on the starboard side deck, bringing his knees as close to his chin as he could without losing his balance to the waves, and holding his staff in hand for further aid in not tipping over. He tugged at his hair with his free hand.
The others were port side as far as he knew, likely going below now they were surrounded by water, and would be for some time. While he had agreed to come back to Paradis, he wasn't going to voluntarily be be brought below deck again for anything.
It wasn't long before Julian came around the corner, with two bowls of food in hand. Kevin smirked slightly as the otherwise very dignified man had not quite the sea legs of a sailor, at least Kevin had an excuse for poor balance.
"Do you mind if I join you? I brought lunch."
Kevin nodded, forcing out a "yeah" and re-positioned himself so he could wedge his staff between himself and the wall and took the offered bowl.
Lunch was some kind of cured ham, sauced and seasoned, with bread on the side. They ate in silence, washing it down with a thermos-full of tea. It was an uncomfortable silence, Kevin knowing there was much that still needed to be said, and knowing there was much Julian wanted to say but was afraid of Kevin reacting poorly so soon after the tentative peace was struck.
Kevin figured there were things for him to say too, sooner or later, and so broke it himself.
"I want you to know, Julian, that I'm sorry for hurting you. I shouldn't have. I just... I just didn't know what else to do at the time."
Kevin didn't look at the other man, but he felt him shift to look at him.
"I also want you to know. When we get back, I'll accept whatever punishment you decide for me. Just. Please don't tie me up again. Please." Kevin hid his head in his arms, breathing heavier than he was expecting to at that confession.
Julian was silent for a moment. "I meant what I said, when I told you there wouldn't be a punishment. You have to follow the terms of parole you agreed to, but I'm not going to hurt you. I promise."
"I know that's what you said but you couldn't have meant it. I know you were just saying that so I wouldn't hurt you more."
"Kevin, I meant it completely. All you have to do is ask to come back and you would be welcomed back with open arms. And you have asked. And so you will be welcomed back. I don't punish for the sake of punishment."
"But I hurt you. I killed Minstrel."
"And I really wish you hadn't. But- you've been punished enough. You weren't in your right mind. Hurting you more wouldn't bring him back, and you choosing to come back is like reviving you from the dead anyhow. I just want you to feel safe again. Why would I push you away now?"
Kevin stared off at the waves before replying. "Is everyone else going to feel that way?"
"I specifically ordered him not to go after you. Both times, in fact. But it was his choice to defy them. And you had made your intentions clear to him after the first. I won't say you were in the right either, but he knew what you were prepared to do, and he went of his own free will anyway. That is the truth, and that is what I will say to anyone who gives you trouble."
"Are you going to make me swear loyalty to you, commander?"
"Mm, I would like it if you did. But I can hardly force you. Either way you would be under my protection. Besides, you already swore loyalty to Elsa all those years ago. No one could argue you haven't served at least a few good years to us. Earned the right to still wear our crest, if you chose to."
"hm. And technically I swore first to Ezran anyway. I renewed my vows to Elsa."
"Exactly, see? You're one of the old guard."
Kevin did feel relaxed by his words, if only slightly. He seemed sincere. He leaned back against the wall behind him and closed his eyes against the sun.
"But I've been gone for so long. Will anyone actually remember that? Or just the crimes I've done?"
"I'll make sure to remind them if they ever forget."
"Thank you, Julian."
The time and silence stretched between them, gently rocked by the waves until Julian spoke again.
"There's something I wanted to ask you, if it's alright?"
"What is it?"
Julian pulled out a file of papers. "I'm sure you know, but part of the agreement to have you released back to us included giving me a copy of your file. Every conversation you had in custody, every note of your actions and whereabouts, of the trial."
"Alright?"
"Would it be ok with you if I read it?"
Kevin huffed. "As if anything in there is a secret?"
"I know, I just wanted to be clear with you. If you don't want me to read it, or any specific part, I won't. I'll throw the whole file overboard right now if you sincerely ask me to."
Kevin arched an eyebrow. "I don't think you'd actually do that. But if you wish to read it, and would truly follow my wishes, you may. I just want you to know... a lot of that- I'm not proud of what you'll find in there."
"I know. That's why I asked."
A particularly turbulent wave sent Kevin off balance, forcing him to extend a hand, and sending a slight shock of pain from where he instinctively extended and put pressure on his wounded leg. He felt a touch at his shoulder which quickly retreated.
"Sorry."
"It's fine. Thanks."
Kevin adjusted slightly, not wishing to fall off balance again but also trying to wrap himself against the cold sea wind as much as possible without the thick woolen cloak he had stubbornly refused. He could feel Julian's eyes on him.
"What?"
"It's just- do you want help?"
Was there an air of smug amusement in that voice?
"No I'm fine."
"You look cold, is all. We can go below deck to get out of the wind-"
"No! No. I'm fine, I don't need to go below deck." Even as he spoke, he could feel the chill setting into his bones in a way he knew he would soon regret not finding a way to ward off the wind.
Julian hummed, clearly not convinced but also having learned his lesson about pressing Kevin about things that weren't an immediate danger to his life. Kevin did notice how Julian let his own cloak open. An invite? It was clearly intentional, from the way he shifted to allow more of the fabric to the side where Kevin sat. He wasn't being slick at all.
Kevin rolled his eyes. "What are you doing?"
"You know, we have these lovely cloaks, handcrafted and specifically designed to protect against the cold which comes with being outside, and not up to much strenuous activity."
Kevin suppressed a smirk, suddenly enjoying the game they were now playing. "I know, I used to wear one. Yours seems to have fallen, right- ah right there."
"Hm, so it has. I barely noticed. That probably means I don't really need it right now. Would you like to borrow it?"
Oh, he thinks he's so cool. Unfortunately Kevin had already decided he wasn't going to wear one of those anymore. "I don't need the whole thing, just a corner, I think." He slid a bit closer to Julian, letting their shoulders touch. "If that's ok."
Julian nodded. "I didn't think you'd want to be this close to me."
"Don't get me wrong. We're not there yet. But- I do miss you. I miss what we used to have. And I am cold."
"Mhm. Alright." Julian threw the side of the cloak over Kevin's opposite shoulder as he snuggled in, pressing his entire side of his body up to Julian's, and tucked a few fingers under his flight harness for security against the rolling waves. He felt Julian shift in a way that seemed to be checking to make sure Kevin wasn't snatching anything off of said harness, but then relaxed back into him.
He was warm. And the way Julian stroked his hair, like he used to, sent a different kind of shiver down his spine.
It was comfortable. Sans the hard wooden floor, and the rocking of the boat, and the gulls cawing-
Kevin pressed his face into Julian's shoulder and neck, just above the collarbone. Why did he ever leave? He could have had this the whole time.
With Julian's hand in his hair, and his own fingers entwined in the other man's harness, mooring him in place, he let himself drift off.
~
Julian couldn't be 100% sure Kevin wasn't trying to play him, but if he really did still hate him for what happened, he never had to agree to come back.
Kevin had a long way to go. It was true many of his old comrades turned against him when he had initially lashed out, and most of the rest when news was brought that Minstrel was dead by his hands. And that wasn't to speak of Kevin's personal journey in his own head. Julian knew by now what false peace looks like, how quickly a riptide can pull one under.
But he was hanging on, now. He would have more people than just Julian looking out for him specifically, a whole net this time. People that Kevin helped many years ago. People who were hurt in very similar ways, and maybe that would help more than Julian ever could have done the first try.
For now he smiled at the barely audible snores that started from Kevin. He opened the file still on his lap.
~
Eventually, Quinn came around the corner.
"Oh, sorry, I don't mean to intrude. I just wanted some air."
"It's fine. I was just doing some reading." Julian was suddenly very aware of his hand still in Kevin's hair at his shoulder. Aware because Quinn made no secret with the way he looked at him that was what he was referring to.
"He was cold."
"It's warmer, and dryer, inside you know."
"And stuffier, so you've mentioned."
"Eh, true." Quinn leaned against the guardrail. "I guess I just didn't realize, how involved you two were."
Julian quirked an eyebrow. "And what do you mean by that?"
"Nothing! Just that you didn't let on. You've been awfully reserved with that information, before last night I never would have suspected-"
"Allow me to interject, officer. Neither you, nor your crown, is entitled to know every last detail of our relationship. I will state plainly that I plan to uphold the deal I made with your government for his relative freedom, and any involvement with him will not hinder that.
"In addition, while you are coming along to keep his parole, the laws of Paradis are slightly different to those of your home. Not everything outlawed there is outlawed here. Not everything you know to be a sin is considered as such here."
His tone was hard, but diplomatic.
"Right, right, I'm sorry. Commander, I didn't mean it like that."
"Mhm, of course."
Kevin stirred beside him but made no indication he heard anything. Julian rubbed his head softly to coax him back to sleep.
"I guess I just didn't realize until now why you intervened for him."
"I didn't pull him out of a life of incarceration because I'm romantically involved with him, if that's the point you're trying to make."
"So why did you? You broke the policy of isolationism to fight the courts for extradition. For one man."
Julian watched Kevin's face as he rubbed his thumb gently along his scalp. "I've never been Christian, but a long time ago, he taught me some of the stories from the bible. I imagine you're Anglican?"
"Yes, why?"
"Do the stories change much between denominations?"
"Depends. Exact wordings change depending on the exact translation, but the overall stories and messages should stay the same between, say, the king James version and the catholic one."
"Then you should know the one about the son who goes off into the world, squandering all of his father's money. When the famine comes and the son has nowhere to go lest he starve and perish to the elements, he returns home, groveling to his father's feet, not believing he would ever be worthy of forgiveness.
"Instead, he is immediately forgiven. A feast is held in his honor. The father is just glad his son came home.
"Are there truly no obvious parallels here? He asked for help, to return to my side, so of course I would fight for him."
"Well I suppose, when you put it like that."
And at Julian's side, Kevin curled almost imperceptibly closer.
anyway it's 9pm no one will see this post but I am once again rambling about the BroZone breakup
specifically, about Floyd just kinda lingering in the background of the scene, not getting involved in the argument between JD, Bruce, and Clay until the end when they're all storming out
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and how Bruce and Clay just kinda leave without giving Floyd much of a thought, and okay from a meta standpoint this is probably just condensed writing so that we can focus on the interaction between Floyd and Branch but from a headcanon standpoint.....
it feels like, by this point in the band, everyone is so used to Floyd making himself small and not interfering with their fights until things get heated, that they don't really think to ask Floyd how he feels about the situation. Not because they don't care, but more like.....
....they don't think Floyd is that fussed? Precisely because he's so good at stomping down his own feelings to focus on being the family therapist? It's the curse of being "the Sensitive One," the mediator, the glue that holds the whole family together. Not to quote Madagascar on a Trolls meta post, but it's like this: "you've helped me so often to see the bright side of my problems, that I don't think of you as having any"
and obviously this isn't to say that Bruce and Clay aren't aware that Floyd has his own issues going on within their family dynamic but I don't know, man! They have their own stuff going on! They're all suffocating and they're all young adults and they don't know how to resolve conflict healthily! And Floyd is the original baby of the family! They're not going to press him on those issues until much, much later, when they're all older and Floyd has an entirely new and different mountain of trauma on top of his lingering childhood hangups.
anyway the bottom line is that they all need a heaping helping of family therapy
I love youUuOUuUoU ❤ | {SabiGiyuu}
Tumblr media
Theme: Fluffy sillyness!!
Note: That's got to be one of my fav sabigiyuu pictures i love them so fucking much i can't.
Sabito lived past final selection AU bc i said so (sorta basing this off of the picture)
Before Kyojuro became a Hashira i think :> After Sanemi did
No certain plot just silly SabiGiyuu scenes
Sabito grinned as he ran off with Giyuu's haori, tiptoeing away from his room as he went. He found some scissors and cut through the middle carefully, praying with all his might he didn't fuck up.
He got his and did the same then quickly started sewing together the two sides, as well as he could. He did the same with the remaining ones then held up his work proudly.
Just then, the door opened and he looked up.
"Sabito? I can't find my haori, do you know whe-" Giyuu started. He paused as he saw what Sabito had done and he frowned. "Sabito... what did you do?"
Sabito grinned nervously, pulling one of the haori's on and giving the other to Giyuu. "Just put it on!!!"
Giyuu sighed but slipped it on, deciding he had no other haori to use anyways. "Why..." he grumbled.
"We match now, Giyuu!!" Sabito insisted, twirling around.
Sabito laughed and shook Giyuu until he smiled.
"Fine, I guess it's alright," the ravenette hesitantly agreed.
"Yayy!!"
~~~
Sanemi raised an eyebrow at the two as they spoke to each other in the corner of the yard. They were at a Hashira meeting—there were two Water Hashira's, Giyuu and Sabito—and it hadn't yet started yet so they were simply talking to one another.
"Since when did you have matching haori's?" Tengen asked, who was closest to the Water Hashira's.
Giyuu rolled his eyes but Sabito smiled wildly. "I sewed them together!"
"Without my permission," Giyuu added with a scowl.
"You love it though!" the peach-haired Hashira insisted, bobbing his head.
Tengen grinned. "It's flashy, I like it."
"See???" Sabito said, as if to make a point.
Giyuu huffed. "Whatever."
~~~
Sabito was drunk. Not on purpose, no, the Hashira—and hopefully anyone else in the demon slayer corps—usually refrained from drinking so they could be clearheaded through their missions. He'd only been given a drink by someone who had mixed up something with alcohol with what he'd originally bought and now... Giyuu had to deal with him.
Unfortunately, Sabito apparently got really drunk even with just a little...
"Giyuuuu!!" Sabito whined, shaking the said Hashira. "I wanna go hoommmee!!"
"We are at home," Giyuu said, sighing.
"No we aren'ttt!! This is Madagascarr," he grumbled. (credits to my sister for the random country <3)
"Madagascar...?" Giyuu asked, raising an eyebrow. "Since when?"
"Since... december," Sabito decided, slumping down to the floor. "I'm tireedd..."
"Alright, let's take you to bed," Giyuu said, going to pick him up.
"Nooo I want to sleep on the floor!" Sabito said, crossing his arms.
"Why?"
"It's comfy," he replied simply, laying down and curling up in a ball.
"For fucks sake, your room isn't that far!!" Giyuu said, promptly picking him up and marching off to Sabito's room.
"I wanna sleep in your room," Sabito decided, once he was on his own bed.
"Seriously?" Giyuu asked impatiently.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because..." Sabito considered the question for a moment, looking as if he was thinking hard. "I love youuuu!!" he slurred, grinning stupidly up at Giyuu.
Giyuu sighed. "I love you too but you can't sleep in my room you drunkass. You're sleeping here tonight," he said, turning to leave.
Sabito grumbled. "But you love me too!"
"Doesn't change anything." Giyuu went to the door and said, "If I come into this room later and you aren't asleep I'm going to throw you out of the house," before closing the door.
Sabito blinked in the darkness that filled his room; Giyuu had closed his window and drawn down the curtains. "Fine," he huffed, grabbing his pillow and using it as a blanket.
~~~
"Giyuu!"
"Hm?" The Hashira looked up as his name was called and he stopped on his way back home.
Sabito was running up to him happily.
"Sabito, you're alright?" Giyuu asked, for his boyfriend had just been at the Butterfly estate due to an injury.
"Yeah!! Kocho-San finally let me out," he said, laughing. "And her little sister, uhm, Shinobu? She kept telling me that I couldn't overwork myself so much."
"Well you shouldn't!" Giyuu agreed.
Sabito shrugged. "Anyways, since you were on a mission I took the liberty to walk around some and I bought you a gift," he said, grinning.
"A gift? You needn't have to-"
"I wanted to!" Sabito interrupted. "Now, here." He shoved a small box into Giyuu's hand.
Giyuu looked at him curiously then opened the box, his eyes widening as he saw it. "A ring?"
Sabito nodded. "I heard of things called 'promise rings' or something, and since I know there's not really a high chance we'll have any time for any marriage I bought these which are supposed to be, like, promising to be together forever and stuff," he explained, his voice faltering at the end. "Sorry, I dunno."
Giyuu gave him a small smile. "It's cute, I like it," he decided, slipping the ring onto his finger. It fit perfectly.
Sabito smiled then, almost relieved, and said, "I have one too!!" He took out of his pocket (idk-) an identical box and opened it, pulling the ring onto his own finger. "Now we match!!" he declared.
Giyuu gave him a look. "We already have matching haori's, and now matching rings- What's next? Bracelets and headbands?" he joked.
And that was how Sabito decided to make matching bracelets and headbands for them.
"What the fuck Sabito!!" Giyuu groaned, eyeing the homemade bracelets Sabito held out proudly to him.
"What?!" he said, huffing.
"Why do we need bracelets? And headbands?!" Giyuu exclaimed.
"Because you said bracelets and headbands," Sabito deadpanned, dead serious.
Giyuu rolled his eyes. "That was a joke!"
"Oh? Now it's not!"
~~~
"Okay, the haori's were sweet and the rings were nice but..." Tengen said, raising an eyebrow. "No offense but are you two little girls?"
Giyuu sighed heavily. "Just so you know, this was all Sabito's idea."
Sabito put his hands on his hips defiantly. "No it wasn't!"
"Fuck you mean 'no it wasn't'?! It definitely was," Giyuu said, glaring at him.
Sabito rolled his eyes in a mocking manner. "Whatever," he said, tossing his hair back.
I imagine Legend to act all cold and stoic around the chain when in reality worry for Ravio is eating him up inside and as soon as they are in his hyrule he breaks out into a sprint, basically leaving the others, and going to Ravio
YEAAAH!!!
It's why I drew the "ugh give me a minute" panel in the last comic cause like, he realized he was too affected by it in front of the chain and needed a moment to collect himself, it's why he seems a little annoyed in the next panel but he's really just acting since he's still pretty worried lmao he needs to keep his "cool and unbothered" persona hehe
I can absolutely see it as that one scene from Madagascar 1, the one where Alex runs at Marty all happy and worried like and then halfway through the run he gets more and more angry lmao
That's basically legend getting home like, he sees ravio and is relieved and then immediately gets angry cause what the fuck did you do did you touch MY STUFF I BET YOU DID
Madagascar in Nickelodeon Magazine (part 1 of 4)
Madagascar was first featured in Nick Mag in the June/July 2005 issue, shortly after the film's May 2005 release.
Tumblr media
Here we have the cover of the magazine, featuring Alex, Gloria and the Penguins
Tumblr media
Next we have an ad for the tie-in video game
Tumblr media
Finally we have a two-page spread featuring an interview with the main cast. Full transcription of the interview under the read more!
We talked to the stars of the new animated movie Madagascar. The film is about some animals from New York City's Central Park Zoo who suddenly find themselves stranded in the wilds of Madagascar, an island of the coast of southern Africa.
On-screen best friends and real-life pals Ben Stiller (near right, who plays Alex the lion) and Chris Rock (far right, who plays Marty the zebra) talked to us about their characters.
Nickelodeon Magazine: What is your character like? Ben Stiller: Alex is sort of the king of the Central Park Zoo. He enjoys being the main attraction and would be happy for things to always stay the same. Chris Rock: Marty is the adventurer of the group. He's not content in the zoo. He's the guy who asks, "What more could we be doing with ourselves?"
Nick Mag: Are you at all like your character? Ben: A little bit. [Like Alex,] I'm a New Yorker and a creature of habit. I like the comforts of home. And Alex is sort of an actor. He's a performer who has the self-delusional, self-involved thing that I think every actor can identify with. Chris: [Like Marty,] I always wanted to get away from where I grew up.
Nick Mag: What was the hardest thing about recording your lines? Ben: The time frame was crazy. It was like, "Wow, we're still doing this? They were serious about [this taking] four years?" At one point, I felt like all I ever said was "Marty!" Literally, for years. Chris: "Am I white with black stripes or black with white stripes?" How many times did I say that?
Nick Mag: Do you ever feel caged up, like you're in a zoo? Ben: Sometimes, when you're not happy on a movie set, it can be like that. Chris: Yeah, movies can be like that. Ben: I remember doing a movie once where, on the first day of rehearsals, I realized, "Uh-oh, this is not good." And I had four months to go.
Nick Mag: Did you do research for your role? Ben: I ate a bowl of Frosted Flakes because of Tony the Tiger, and then I realized I was playing a lion and that I was really off.
Nick Mag: Favorite movie snack? Ben: I'm a big M&M's guy—peanut or plain. Chris: Popcorn and Raisinettes, but I wish they served banana cream pie!
We got the skinny on Jada Pinkett Smith's big character, Gloria the hippo.
Nickelodeon Magazine: What is your character like? Jada Pinkett Smith: She's like the mother of the gang. She wants to make sure that everybody is happy and taken care of.
Nick Mag: Are you anything like her? Jada: I have a real loyalty to my friends, just like Gloria does.
Nick Mag: Was the recording process hard? Jada: It was pretty challenging. You have to be really patient. You don't have the other actors there, there are no props, and you don't know what the scene looks like. It's just you and some paper with words on it.
Nick Mag: Do you have any pets? Jada: I have three dogs and a cat. And I'm about to get three more dogs!
Nick Mag: Do you like the outdoors? Jada: You have to be very cautious, but I love the wild. My intention for the next couple of years is to do more camping and go whitewater rafting in the Grand Canyon.
Nick Mag: Are you freaked out by nature at all? Jada: Not at all. Insects are the only things that kind of freak me out, but I can get used to them.
Nick Mag: Favorite movie snack? Jada: I usually do a mixture of popcorn and Goobers. Now I want some!
David Schwimmer talked to us about his character, Melman the giraffe.
Nickelodeon Magazine: What is your character like? David Schwimmer: Melman is a hypochondriac. he's afraid of almost everything and needs a lot of attention.
Nick Mag: Are you at all like him? David: I'm the opposite. My character couldn't be happier having bars around him so that nothing can get in. Personally, I'd go crazy. I'm low maintenance. I like not having a routine. Also [unlike Melman], I have to be forced to go to the doctor.
Nick Mag: What other kind of animal would you like to play? David: A black panther. There's something powerful and mysterious about it. It's got those green eyes and the sleek black coat. It would also be fun to be a water creature, like a dolphin. [Zelda the roving reporter: You're already a good Schwimmer.]
Nick Mag: Do you ever feel like you're in a zoo? David: I waited tables for seven years at restaurants where I felt like that. I also had a crummy job working in a tiny room in the business center of a hotel in Chicago in a suit and tie from six AM to six PM.
Nick Mag: Do you have any pets? David: I don't. I travel too much. But I had many animals growing up—dogs, a lizard, turtles. I love turtles. Their only protection is hiding—I love that about turtles.
Nick Mag: Favorite movie snack? David: There's no substitute for good, fresh popcorn.
i have absolutely no clue why but i get SO attattched to main characters its actually crazy. i was actually plotting the downfall of ace and grim when they first showed up because do you have ANY idea what this poor pathetic loser has been through. i’m like the stereotypical confrontational best friend thats only purpose is to hype up the mc. anyway this was all to say that your yuu moodboard was soooo 🎉🥳 i cant wait for the design (but take your time!)
canon!yuu is like one of my favorite characters in the game... I understand
it haunts me that the only artwork I have (had) of romyuu is this nightmarish nativity scene of them as mary, lilia as joseph, and mort from madagascar as the baby jesus. the existence of this would take 6 levels of context to explain
An in-depth character analysis of Skipper: pt 1
Tumblr media
This version of Skipper is probably the simplest since he was comic relief at first, but a bit of a hot take, might actually be my favourite (I prefer the show version of the other three tho). Going back to the movies after years of watching the show, I realised that this version of Skipper is surprisingly… chill? I guess I’ve been so used to his tv personality that my brain just decided to override his movie personality with tv Skipper.
Buckle your seatbelts, this is going to be a long one ☝️🤓
Movie Skipper is quite a nonchalant, carefree and I can’t believe I’m saying this, but calm character. He’s kinda just minding his own business doing his missions. He’s pretty serious when he’s leading his team and planning his missions, eg. the boat hijacking scene, but generally you’ll see him with a smile on his face. He’s always been a suave and charming little guy with a lot of sarcasm and sass, which he wouldn’t be Skipper without.
Generally he takes no bs, is straight to the point, and is pretty blunt, usually to Alex and his bunch. But this is also where his sass and sarcasm starts to show more. It’s funny. I think that Madagascar 2 really shows his charm and sass more out of the three main movies bc of all the chaos.
It’s pretty safe to say that the penguins are chaotic neutrals (apart from Private maybe) but they do it in such a way that makes it really funny. Not only do they trick the tourists and steal their car (ya know, grand theft auto) but also run over the grandma after seeing she’s still alive (ya know, attempted vehicular homicide). I could name every single crime they commit istg and it’s a long list 💀 But anyway, Skipper does all this with such a chill and carefree attitude and simply doesn’t give a shit. It’s what makes him so funny. It’s a big reason why I love this version of him, bc he doesn’t take everything too seriously and just goes about his day like nothing ever happened.
Obviously, he’s not evil and does still care about others, for example when they rescue Alex and his bunch in Madagascar 2 and 3, as well as stopping Dave in their spinoff. But I do think that he has something against humans (which is understandable) bc he seems to have a general disregard for them which is kinda funny.
In Madagascar 3, you start to see a bit of a shift in his personality and he becomes a little more aggressive. I’m guessing it’s because Tom was used to voicing Skipper more aggressively for the tv series and they also probably adopted a bit of tv Skipper into movie Skipper. But he is still generally pretty nonchalant nonetheless. He isn’t as suave as the other two movies either, but he does activate Kowalski’s nuclear reactor just for the funnies so I’ll give him that. The best thing about them here is their interactions with Dubois, the sheer trail of carnage they leave behind wherever they go, and the funny little quips here and there. Can’t forget bababooey.
The penguins spinoff movie brings back a little of Skipper’s charm and swagger, mostly with the “I do things my own way” attitude and him just being an asshole to Classified bc he doesn’t like him. This movie also makes Skipper more tame than the other movies which I don’t mind that much, but I wish he was a little more chaotic neutral rather than so hellbent on being heroic.
But the thing that really solidified Skipper as a complex character was his character development. This is the first time you get to see his vulnerable side and even from the start of the movie you see that he’s actually pretty sweet underneath all that chaos. When they “lose” Private is when you really start seeing Skipper’s full character, going from carefreeness to pure desperation trying to get his little brother back after he gets kidnapped, which I think was a great way to go because it shows how much he loves his family.
Later on he kinda “gives up” and follows the North Wind’s plan, which is one of the only moments you see him completely vulnerable and unmasked - no clever quip, no opposition, just acceptance. A perfect contrast to his usual “never give up, never back down” attitude. I think it adds a lot more realism to his character and shows that the one thing that can break him is losing one of his brothers. This is something that you don’t really see in the show (other than for a short period of time eg. Skorka) which I think would have been a great way to develop his character more.
When they get Private back at the end of the movie, you get to see Skipper’s sweet side again and his character development comes full circle - he learns to stop undermining Private. He realises he was wrong and tries to make it right. In a way, I guess he takes accountability. Which you don’t see all that often in the show, only episodes like Needle Point coming to mind when thinking about it.
I think that this is another big reason why I prefer movie Skipper over tv Skipper - yeah, he’s a bit flawed and a little simpler than tv Skip, but he makes an effort to change in the end which tv Skipper doesn’t do as much. Movie Skipper is nonchalant, sassy, suave and by the end, pretty sweet. I guess you could say he’s pretty well written and honestly I wish we got to see more of his softer side and less paranoid attitude at the end of the show.
That’s not to say I hate tv Skipper tho, when i was a kid I LOVED him a lot more than movie Skip and I still find him rlly funny, I mean Skipper is Skipper haha. I guess my opinion just changed bc I grew up and I started seeing characters differently and started valuing character development a lot more, but who knows, maybe in a year it’ll change again lmao.
I am so sorry this got so out of hand and turned into a mf essay 💀 I promise the other analysis will be shorter 🙏
i’m too lazy to pick voice headcanons for everyone but when I think of the characters here’s how they happen to sound: wenda sounds like ayano from yansim, pinki sounds like jecka from class of 09, simon (unfortunately) sounds like nagito from sdr2, tunner sounds like mr mackey from south park, owakcx communicates in sound effects, vineria sounds like candle from iii when depicted as a woman and like the bomboclaat dog guy when depicted as a man, sky sounds like blueberry from iii, gray beeps in morse code to communicate, jevin sounds like gabriel from ultrakill, cluckr sounds like nickel from ii, black sounds either like the god from orin ayo or the todays mission guy from freakbait (depends on the scenario), brud sounds like the canadians from family guy (specifically the ones in the canadian alcatraz scene and the one in the scene where brian and stewie’s car gets stuck on their way to the north pole), and durple sounds like skipper from madagascar. sorry if your fave isn’t on the list, maybe they should be more thought worthy.
Just woke up sweating from my nap because I was feeling weird about some portrayals of Pavitr and did the whole Alex The Lion Madagascar 2 Escape from Africa "De Ja Vu Like I've Been Here Before" scene realizing where I've seen this before and why I don't particularly like it
In my own words:
They're doing to Pavitr what they did to Kakyoin which is turning him into a yaoified feminized skinny bottom twink who's only there to make sassy remarks and be the manic pixie yaoi boy, they're gonna do what they did to Jotakak with Chaipunk because I mostly see this happening in Chaipunk fanart and fanfiction
It's the typical case of a character being hyper feminized by the fandom, like how it tends to be in a lot of yaoi series because someone always has to be "the girl" in the relationship because the "bottom" is always portrayed as small, skinny with hyper feminine features or traits and the "top" is always portrayed as some dark, hyper masculine, tall, looming figure
And it tends to bleed into most mlm ships even when the characters in the source material are completely portrayed as being opposite as this like say for instance idk another JoJo ship like Josuyasu where just because Josuke takes pride in his appearance like Pavitr, fans automatically label him the "feminine one" or the "girl" in the relationship and tend to draw him smaller and skinnier than he is and by default draw Okuyasu bigger and taller when Josuke is actually taller than Okuyasu by an inch and the two more or less have the same build but I know you've had to seen it somewhere before because it runs so deep when it comes to MLM ships that I've seen it happen in the fucking OSMOSIS JONES FANDOM (don't ask, you don't wanna know. Unless you do want to know, then I'll share with you the shitshow of what I saw)
And this isn't about the people who may have headcanons of Pavitr being transfemme, ya'll keep doing what you do.
This is about the people who will look at a mlm ship and force hyper feminine and hyper masculine traits onto both of those characters just because they need someone to be the "girl" in the relationship and they choose who's the "girl" based on traits they might consider feminine, example, Pavitr takes pride in his appearance, he's typically cheerful and happy go lucky, he's short (shorter than Hobie at least) and he's "sassy" (Y'know the whole chai tea rant which wasn't really him being "sassy" it was more so him ranting about western cultural appropriation and people using words they don't even understand incorrectly but I digress)
And of course Hobie is given the hyper masculine traits because he's a tall black man which is a whole other problem I'd have to make a whole different rant about of how whenever black men are in mixed race mlm ships they're always automatically made out to be the hyper masculine ones because black men have always had hyper masculinity pushed on them and they're never allowed to be the "soft" ones in the relationship, even if a black male character is canonly portrayed as being not being typically masculine the fandom will still write them or draw them as having some secret " aggressive dominant dark side"
In ChaiPunk's case ? It's literally just feminized asian person and masculainized black person with all the shit I said before about how fandoms always need to make someone the "girl" in the relationship and yeah
Y'all get the point
PORTAL MUSIC HEADCANNONS
Woah I've never done anything like this before so if this is formatted weird or anything, forgive me.
Chell ---------------------------------------------------------
To be honest I think she's one of those people who isn't really into music
BUT! I think she has a few bands she really likes
The Velvet Underground
But they're mostly instrumental
Lars and the Real Girl [Movie Soundtrack] (It's a really weird, akward movie but oddly sweet; The soundtrack is very comforting and I feel it's Chell's general vibe)
Like's ambient music
AND THOSE NATURE-MEDITATION SONG THINGIES!!!!
Like birds chirping or thunderstorms
Hates(?) the Opera (From GLaDOS Trauma)
Wheatley (Very blue sky coded) ---------------------------------------------------------
Really like's that sort of old school type of music
Like 50s & 60s music
"Everybody Loves Somebody"- Dean Martin
Simon & Garfunkel
Maybe The Beach Boys???
"Everyday" - Buddy Holly(The Weezer guy!!!)
He just likes how human it sounds
Listens to classical music sometimes to feel smart (This is canon but still) Also I don't think actually likes Classical music, it's to "boring" to him.
Probably listens to Creep by Radiohead
These are like, a really random takes but I feel them in my bones
GLaDOS ---------------------------------------------------------
Prepare for your mind to be blown
She likes the opera
Who could have guessed
I feel like if she wasn't going to do Cara Mia for Chell's goodbye song it would have been "Time To Say Goodbye" (The Opera song that played in that Madagascar movie where the crew joined the circus and there was that one scene where King Julian was like on a Tricycle with a bear in a tu-tu? idk)
I bet she listens to fireplace ASMR
She prefers listening to robots programmed to sound like Wheatley scream as they burn in the firey pits of Android hell
Hates The Beatles (From Wheatley trauma)
THAT'S ALL!!! Have a wonderful day/night/life guys :)
finally! I get to talk about a movie I actually like!
right off the bat, though: is Penguins of Madagascar a good movie? No. But do I love it a lot and have a ton of fun watching it? Boy do I!
okay okay I have to be fair here—I don't like how the penguins are handled in their own movie. I don't like how dumbed down they are from how they're portrayed in the main Madagascar trilogy to the point where they hardly feel like the same characters. The Madagascar 1 penguins would never bungle their plans like this, these are supposed to be the same penguins that successfully hijacked a cargo ship and built a nuclear reactor into an SUV for crying out loud!
but, sigh, you know me—I love me my fictional brothers, and I do think the family dynamic between Private and the others is very sweet, I like seeing them all learn to appreciate Private after making him the butt monkey in all the previous movies
and aside from that, this movie is just fun! I like the dumb jokes, I like the chase scene through Venice, I like Skipper and Classified's little rivalry, I like the score, and I love Dave! Easily one of my favourite Dreamworks villains, I love how ridiculous and unapologetic he is, I love the running gag with his henchmen, and I love how he learns nothing by the end, his fakeout epiphany always gets a laugh out of me no matter how many times I watch it.
I don't know how to conclude this review here's the aforementioned Venice chase scene it's so good
i think on multiple occasions whenever yuma would forget to bring meat buns yakou would stare at him and the other detectives like that one scene from madagascar when alex the lion looks at marty the zebra and sees him like a giant steak. he never acts on it of course but he does catch himself drooling sometimes and wonders why
