Honestly, you know what got me to start reading this series? The Syosetsu listing for the original webnovel has a couple conditions listed about what the story ISN'T (google translated from Japanese):

・This is not a domestic politics cheat. ・There is no harem development ・This is not a science novel. ・This story is fiction ・This story is opportunistic.

I saw "Not a harem" and "opportunistic" and immediately wanted to read it! I've been looking for a light fantasy read with fun characters. Also, none of the book covers show scantily dressed women crowding out the main character, so I definitely believe the "not a harem" part.

The series is about Ryo Mihara, an unfortunate youth who dropped out of college to take care of the family business, but ends up getting hit by a truck and isekai'd. He goes through the motions, talks to an angel, gets his water magic powers (and eternal youth skill), and gets plopped down into a survival rpg setting where he was to use his wits and powers to make do. He's the kind of guy who asks to be alone, and relishes being placed on a completely uninhabited part of the continent.

Even though some of the science stuff is absolutely incorrect, I don't really care. It's NOT a science novel (lol). His water magic is based off of what he thinks he CAN do, and his ideas about how science worked back on his world. I really enjoyed the minutia of how he solved problems for his living conditions as they came up, even if it was ridiculous.

Ryo is completely alone for the first half of the book, and while I enjoyed his self-talk and banter, it's definitely better when the 2nd guy, Abel, on the cover shows up. Things become more lively, as we get a secondary perspective of Ryo's (hilarious) insanity from being alone for 20 years.

Abel and Ryo together are quite adorable. They genuinely have fun being in each other's company, and end up journeying together. Their interactions and dialogues are fun and snarky, kind of like an Edgar Wright movie. I totally ship them, and am definitely looking forward to their future interactions.

I feel like this book series was made for me, it has just the kind of tone that I love. I'm curious as to how the plot will develop, as this series is originally published by TO Books (of Ascendance of a Bookworm fame), and has 12 volumes already. I'm glad I found another J-novel club gem.

Blog Post 5 : Realism In Big Hero 6 (2014)

A film directed by Don Hall and Chris WIlliams, which shows us that if film successfully combines the fantasy aspect of the film with the emotional aspect, it makes the viewer feel even the farfetched technology and the human situations feel real and relatable. When the film combines high level robotics with an emotionally enriched character arc, it brings out the realism in the film. Let's analyze how realism is used when depicting Hiro Hamada , the protagonist's real life like problems, character arc and the futuristic technology he makes.

Nuances like blending the real city names like San Francisco and Tokyo to create a city of the future in the movie called San Fransokyo or making insane technological advancements but keeping the principles of it rooted to real life. For example Baymax might look futuristic but is based on real life scientific concepts. Modern animation uses this principle to create more immersive and believable experience (Smith and Lee, 2012)

The realism shown in technology along with how the film tackles grief makes the movie more authentic. The emotional development of Hiro begins after his brother Tadashi dies, which is the sentimental core of the film. Hiro goes through a process after the death which started from shock to denial then anger and in the end acceptance. A process similar to Stages of Grief ( Kübler-Ross, 1969) and basing it on real life theories only made it feel more relatable and real. Exploring grief in depth brings out empathy in the audience and allows them to relate in a more personal way (Rosenblatt, 2001).

The film shows how technology can help a person emotionally and at a personal level. Hiro ends up using his skills to form a team after his brother's death, with his partner being the inflatable Baymax. Having a team that resembled a family and the emotional attachment that Baymax provided helped Hiro to heal emotionally. Engaging in meaningful work helps in getting through difficult situations (Seligman, 2011). Hiro proved this theory right when he used his skills to build Baymax and in bigger picture the societal good.

The Dynamic that Hiro and Baymax share is layered with emotional depth. What appears to be just a robot on the surface, with utility being its only purpose, that changes when Hiro spends time developing it which deepens their bond, where there is trust , emotional support after a traumatic event. This process is similar to how we develop friendships in real life.

Conclusion :

The emotional journey of Hiro, the relationships shared between the characters, the robotic principles derived from real science. These all acts humanize the film no matter how much it dwells in fantasy and allows the audience to connect to it like they would to another human, in fact it does not only mimics but also helps us understand our position in our relationships or environment even better.

Luchidashi consuming brick fic

Do NOT EAT BRICKS its awful that i even have to say this but Luchika does NOT condone eating bricks And nor do I.

Luchika was hungry, he had grown up going hungry, everyday, but not like this, kunai never seemed to need to eat, sure both of them were dead, but luchika still felt hunger. 

He had asked kunai about it before, only getting a shrug in return.

Luchika at 2 in the morning started pacing around the small apartment, it was something to take his mind off of his hunger,,

“Lu? the hell are you doin?” Tadashi slurred out, he had clearly been sleeping peacefully.

“Huh? oh its” he paused “nothing”

“Uh huh and youre just so happening to be pacing at 2 in the morning?” Tadashi was stupid sure but- okay thats really all

“I- well-“ he sighed defeatedly.

“Just tell me what it is” tadashi put his hand behind luchika, making him walk to “his” bedroom.

“Well- i, i dunno just-“ kunai sat down ok the edge of the bed motioning luchika to do the same. 

Luchika sat on the bed aswell before starting again, “I dunno, just, yknow how you never get hungry?” he asked rhetorically. “mhm?” “I still do get hungry and i dont know why, and obviously its hard to just go out and get food because- well you know”

Kunai sat in thought for a minute, trying to understand what Luchika meant.

“So what youre saying is, youre hungry” 

“Yea?”

“and you cant and or wont go steal anything to eat”

“Uh yea??”

“and youve kept this from me for how long?”

“Um, i dunno- since we started living together? i guess?”

Kunai sighed, 

“Come here” luchika did as he was told and walked over to where kunai was pointing

“You see that brick there?”

“Yea?”

“If you get hungry, just pull it out, youll see” Kunai had hidden snacks behind the brick, for whatever reason unknown to luchika.

“A-ah, well- thank you” luchika was confused, did kunai want him to eat the brick?

“Youre welcome, now go get some rest, you look tired”

“Okay, thank you!” (😊 SEN YOU GET YHID JOKE RIGHT) 

luchika walked out of kunais “room” going to his own.

He flopped down onto his own bed, before letting himself be consumed by the warm blanket under him, he hadnt even took of his shoes 

(yes luchika just threw himself ok the bed and fell asleep he look like he would)

The next day luchika woke up at 14, he wouldve slept longer, but his stomach had other plans. He felt if he had ate anything like hed throw it up.

He walked around the cramped apartment, looking for Kunai, after 10 minutes of looking, he realised that Tadashi mustve went out. 

He remembered what Kunai said about the brick, he thought it was stupid, but he knew if he didnt eat something now, hed regret it later. 

Luchika walked to the spot kunai had been pointing at, caressing the brick wall trying to find the one he had pulled out the night prior (yk he doesnt pull out he…)

before resting his hands on one that moved, kunai had stuck it in slightly deeper than the rest, probably to mark where it was (SHUT UP 😭)

Luchika worked with his nails to pull it out, after struggling for 5 minutes, succeeding. 

He sat the brick down on the floor, was he seriously about to eat a whole ass brick just because he was hungry? yes. yes he was.

He brought the brick up to his mouth, questioning if itd break his teeth. he knawed on a corner for a while, getting used to the slughtly crumbly texture, the apartment was quite old so it made sense. 

He tried to break some off in his hands to make it easier, but failed, so he went back to the corner, he swallowed the broken bits of brick like it was his last meal, attempting to savor the “flavor” or lack thereof..

He started to cough, breathing heavily, turns out, eating rubble of bricks thats dry and crumbbly will do that.

He didnt have any water, the utilities had been shut off since he died, they used candles to even see.

No bottled water in sight, he kept coughing, he believed he heard a door shut, however it was only 13 by that point, he wasnt hopeful that kuani had came back that fast.

But of course luchika had to be wrong, there in the doorway, he seen a black silhouette, through the tears and constant coughing, it was hard to make out.

“Lu? what the hell.. what did you do?”

luchika contiuned to cough, attempting to gasp for air, yet again, failing.

Luchika watched as the silhouette disappeared into the darkness again, he attempted to cry out for them to not leave, but only made a strange spitting (?) noise.

Kunai returned with a bottle of water and opened it for him, he had stolen some from god knows where, he reasoned with himself that i was “just incase”, this was the only logical argument hes ever made in his life and non life. 

He moved the bottle up to luchikas mouth before tipping his head back, luchika followed kunais movement, letting the slightly cool water pour into his mouth and throat, 

He had a lot to explain.

(arent u guys so happy that i write so many ppl eating so many things they shouldnt? yk, (to the like two ppl that seen it) the tadajiro bathroom thjng, j was planning to force jiro to eat the shampoo, but i thought thatd be too mean 🥰 /j.)

im a she/her and i'd prefer a romantic matchup with a male pairing.

im generally pretty quiet and shy, but if i get out of my shell i can be pretty talkative. my humor is questionable, i think it's funny though. TvT..im not that good in social situations tbh, i can go nonverbal if im overstimulated.

reading, writing and studying (sometimes..) i also like collecting little trinkets (just like my gramps lol), it isnt a huge collection but yeah! though if im not doing any of those things im either on my phone or sleeping.

definitely simple traits like loyalty, honesty and being caring. not that picky tbh, as long as we click! unless they're a horrible person/j plus points if they make me feel included though tee hee

The Water Magician: Arc 1 Volume 2 Impressions

The adventures continue! This volume has what I would consider 2 major events (mini-arcs) contained. One, where everyone has to fend off a stampede coming from inside the dungeon. The other is an assignment at a faraway port-town, to celebrate the launch of a new ship.

The author has to solve what I call the "Saitama" problem. In order to preserve the tension of the series, Ryo can't be around when big issues occur, since he is (supposedly) one of the strongest magicians in this world. So to prevent everything from getting solved quickly, he actually writes him out of the situation, or delays his arrival with some excuse. There aren't any cellphones in this world, so it makes sense these things happen, at least at this point in the series. Ryo isn't particularly interested in becoming a hero and saving the world. At most, he cares about the people around him, like Abel, a newly introduced future-gf, Sera, and his party-mates.

Sera was introduced in the previous volume as a battle-hardened highly-skilled-at-wind-magic elf-girl who is enthralled with Ryo's sword-fighting abilities. I think it's clear from the setup that she's Ryo's future romantic interest, as every scene they're in together has Ryo remarking on how beautiful she is. They have good chemistry and similar interests, so although this feels like a way to counter the clearly homo vibes between Abel and Ryo, I'm not annoyed about it.

Also, Ryo has two hands. They're both even watching over him in the cover of this volume!! You're not fooling me, author-san....

I imagine Ryo won't have any room for ability growth since the whole point is that he's OP, but I enjoyed the development of the side characters.
