When He Sees Me: IzuOcha
⚠️MAJOR MANGA SPOILERS. Precede with caution, you have been warned.⚠️
Uraraka nervously paced around her dorm room as the watchful eyes of Tsu and Mina followed her every move. Mina wished Uraraka would just relax. Going on a date with the vigilante “Green Knight” would not end in some catastrophe like Uraraka thought it would.
“Ochako-chan, you need to calm down, kero,” Tsu finally said from the end of Uraraka’s bed. “There’s nothing to worry about.”
Uraraka flopped dramatically on her bed. “That’s not what I’m worried about, Tsu!” Uraraka sighed. “You guys wouldn’t understand.”
“You know we can’t understand until you tell us,” Mina said pointedly. “Now spill!”
“I stick with real things, usually facts and figures,” Uraraka sighed again, shifting her eyes to the floor. “When information’s in its place, I minimize the guessing game.”
Mina and Tsu exchanged glances. Mina had never taken Uraraka for someone so...logical. She supposed the past year and half has changed Uraraka, and so has her unlikely friendship with the vigilante who has been hunting down various members of the Paranormal Liberation Front.
“Well, guess what?” Uraraka didn’t give Mina or Tsu time to respond. “I don’t like guessing games, or when I feel things before I know the feeling.”
“I’m sure everything with be fine, Ochako,” Mina placed a hand on Uraraka’s shoulder. “Green Knight would be lucky to have someone like you. Unlike Midoriya.”
“Mina...” Tsu warned the pink-haired girl. Midoriya has always been a sore subject for everyone since he had abruptly left after the Battle of Jakku, especially Uraraka. No one knew why he just abandoned their class like that. It seemed as if only Uraraka, Iida, Todoroki and Bakugou knew the real reason.
“It’s fine,” Uraraka forced a smile on her face. “I’m over him. It’s been long enough.”
“So what’s got you all worked up about?” Mina pressed on, trying to goad her friend to keep talking. “You could end up going on a date with him! He said he’s gonna tell you who he is tonight!”
“How am I supposed to operate if I’m just tossed around by fate?” Uraraka stared up at the ceiling as if it held all the answers.
“Like on an unexpected date?” Mina had hearts in her eyes as she thought about Uraraka finally confessing her feelings to the Green Knight.
“What if he talks too fast?” Uraraka blurted out. “Or ask me questions about myself before I decided that? He might sit too close. Or call the waiter by his first name. Or eat Oreos but eat the cookie before the cream.”
Mina and Tsu exchange sympathetic glances. Clearly Uraraka was just making excuses because she was worried about something bigger.
Meanwhile...
Melissa laughed to herself as she watched the Green Knight nervously put on his costume. “Chill out, I’m sure she already likes you as the Green Knight. If she doesn’t like civilian you then she’s pretty shallow.”
“But she’s gonna recognize me when I take my mask off!” Izuku protested, face flushing furiously. “I just don’t know how she’s gonna react.”
“What are you scared of, Midoriya?” Melissa asked genuinely. “She’s just Uraraka. She was your best friend.”
“What I’m scared of?” Izuku chuckled nervously. “Well, what scares me the most is what if when she sees me, what if she doesn’t like it? What if she runs the other way and I can’t hide from it? What if when she knows it’s me, she’s only disappointed? What if I give myself away only to have it given back?”
Melissa patted his back sympathetically. “I couldn’t live with that.” Izuku mumbled dejectedly.
“You don’t know that’s how it’s gonna be, Midoriya,” Melissa said reassuringly. “You just gotta believe in yourself!”
“But I’m just fine in my shell-shaped mind,” Izuku persists, putting on his mask. “This way I get the best view. So that when she sees me, I want her to.”
“Midoriya, don’t you think that you’re being a little,” Melissa shook her head, not wanting to offend her friend. “I mean maybe just a tad, you know, defensive?”
“I’m not defensive!” Izuku squeaked out. He cleared his throat, turning to face the mirror. “I’m simply being cautious. I can’t risk reckless dating due to me miscalculating. I cannot be too careful when it comes to sharing my life.”
“Don’t you think that you’re being too careful?” Melissa stood between Izuku and the mirror. “You’re gonna make yourself miserable, Midoriya, with all this overthinking. Uraraka is your friend. She’s trustworthy. Plus you’re gonna defeat Shigaraki soon.”
“Yeah, I guess so.” Izuku smiled shakily. “I guess it’s time for me to head to our meeting spot.”
“Good luck, Midoriya!” Melissa called after him.
Back to Uraraka
“Sorry girls,” Uraraka said, her face hardening. “But I don’t even know who he is behind the mask! But he could be a criminal, some kind of psychopath!”
Mina burst out laughing. “The Green Knight is probably the furthest thing from a psychopath! He beats all the other psychopaths up! Like he just knocks ‘em out with one punch! He’s totally not a bad guy!”
Tsu had a more pensive expression. “Well, technically he is a criminal, kero. Vigilantes aren’t exactly law abiding citizens, even with the decline of hero society.”
“He could be colorblind!” Uraraka was grasping at straw, trying to find a reason to not go confess her feelings to the Green Knight.
“How untrustworthy is that,” Mina said sarcastically. “Isn’t Iida colorblind? He’s, like, your best friend, right? Chillax, girl.”
“He could be way too mean,” Uraraka protested weakly.
“Like Bakugou, kero.”
Uraraka felt something stir within her chest. “Or even worse he could be very nice, have lovely eyes, and make me laugh and come out of hiding.” An image of her long lost friend, Deku, flashed in her mind before she shook her head. She shouldn’t be thinking about him right now. “Oh, God, what do I do with that?” She shoved her face in her hands.
“Obviously kiss the guy!” Mina screamed, throwing a pillow at her stubborn friend. “Just fucking admit you love him, damn it! He probably likes you too! That’s why he wants to reveal his identity to you, you lucky bastard!”
“But what if when he sees me, I like him and he knows it?” Uraraka screamed into her pillow. She doesn’t want to get her heart broken again. “What if he opens up a door and I can’t close it? What happens then?”
“Kis—” Mina started to say before Tsu covered her mouth.
“Let her finish, kero.”
“What if when he holds me, my heart is set in motion?” Uraraka stood up and continued pacing. “I’m not prepared for that.” She didn’t notice the stray tears that began to fall down her cheeks, the memory of Deku living with no explanation other than the fact that he had All Might’s quirk and he had to go fight Shigaraki.
“I’m scared of breaking open,” Uraraka cries as she leans against the wall. “But I still can’t help from hoping to find someone to talk to, who likes me the way I am. Someone who when he sees me, wants to again.”
“Go get your man,” Mina encouraged softly. “If he doesn’t like you, then all of Class 3A will fuck him up.”
Uraraka wiped a tear from her eye. “Thanks, Mina,” she said shakily. “I guess I’ll go see him.”
Uraraka floated to the rooftop of the abandoned warehouse she had been sneaking off to more and more frequently to see her unlikely friend, the Green Knight. He stood stoically on the ledge, diligently watching the city below him.
“Uraraka,” he said thickly. “It’s nice to see you.”
Uraraka smiled and nodded, shifting her feet nervously. “So...”
“Right,” he chuckled nervously. “I suppose you want to know who I am.”
“You don’t have to tell me,” Uraraka said quickly. “I like who you are with or without the mask.” Realizing what she just said, Uraraka’s face heated up and she turned away.
“Uraraka-san,” he knelt down in front of her, a warm smile decorated his face behind the mask where she couldn’t see. “I’m ready to show you who I am when you are.”
“I’m ready,” Uraraka said determinedly.
He lifted off the mask.

🐾When Doves Cry🐾
Summary: Against her better judgement, Ochako saves the one Izuku loves... no matter how unexpected the results turn out to be.
~~~
Ochako hated this feeling. She knew it was wrong and selfish, and she wanted nothing more than to dispel it from her system, refresh herself, and ignore the sight in front of her. She knew it was jealousy that raked at her heart as her eyes settled on Izuku and Melissa chatting away happily a few tables away from them, but she refused to acknowledge it, forcing herself to look back at her plate and shovel food into her mouth. She wanted to be happy for them, wanted to be able to be around them without wanting to vomit, but her heart forced her to feel this way. She grunted and shoved more food down her throat, trying to distract herself. The food was delicious but she could barely taste it as her eyes disobeyed her brain and looked towards the pair again, her heart clenching when she saw Izuku tilt his head back and laugh heartily at something Melissa said. It sickened her how much she wanted to be in Melissa’s place, wanting to hold Izuku, make him laugh, cuddle him, kiss him. Her cheeks flushed and she turned back to her dinner, fighting back the tears that threatened to appear.
“How pathetic,” Ochako muttered to herself, angry at the tears that pushed against her eyelids, angry at the coiling feeling in her stomach, angry at the beast that roared in fury at the sight of Melissa and Izuku together, angry at everything. A hand on her shoulder jolted her from her swirling thoughts, making her jump.
“Hey, are you alright? You’ve been spacing out for a while.”
Ochako looked up to see her best friend, Tsu, standing beside her, holding her own tray of food in her free hand.
“Oh! Yeah, sorry!” Ochako said, injecting false cheerfulness into her voice and forcing a smile to her face. It was obvious that her friend saw through the excuse and the smile, but the frog girl said nothing as she settled into the seat beside Ochako.
The pair ate in silence for a while, Tsu’s presence finally starting to calm the turmoil in Ochako’s gut. Something about the gentle, cool-headed frog girl was just so calming, and it helped distract Ochako for the first time all evening.
“Is it because of Midoriya?” Tsu asked suddenly, causing Ochako to choke slightly on her bite of food. Coughing and pounding her chest, Ochako swallowed her food painfully and turned to look at her friend incredulously.
“What are you talking about?” Ochako asked, trying to act as if she had no idea what Tsu was talking about.
“Don’t play dumb, Ochako, you’ve been looking so depressed lately and I want to know what’s wrong. Hence why I asked. So, is it Midoriya?”
Ochako sighed. She knew she wouldn’t be able to dodge her way out of this one, Tsu was way too observant and patient to let any excuse get by her. Glancing at her friend, Ochako nodded, her face flushed. Tsu sighed and placed a hand on her shoulder.
“I’m so sorry, Ochako.”
“You have nothing to be sorry for, it’s nobody’s fault but mine. If I wanted him, I should’ve said something. Instead, I hid my feelings away and refused to say anything like the coward I am. Now, he has someone who was able to take that step. I should be happy for them, I want to be happy for them, and I know I will eventually come to terms with it. For now, though, I just feel sad. That’s all. I’ll be back to normal in a few days,” Ochako said, flashing Tsu a sad smile.
An airy giggle made both girls turn to see Melissa, with a bright blush on her face, leaning over to whisper something into Izuku’s ear. The green-haired boy leaned away from her, his face also rivaling that of a tomato, his hand coming up to lightly slap her arm. Melissa giggled again as Izuku averted his gaze, a sheepish smile plastered on his face. The sight made Ochako’s heart squeeze almost painfully.
Melissa and Izuku were together. It was painfully obvious, and everyone knew about their new relationship. Everybody saw the look in their eyes as they looked at each other, and the times when they would hold each other’s hands under the table. Everyone would watch with wide eyes as they whispered sweet nothings in each other’s ears and followed each other back to their rooms in the evenings.
It made Ochako sick to her stomach but there was nothing she could do. She had missed her chance to be with the love of her life. Standing abruptly, Ochako said goodbye to Tsu and took her tray to be disposed of. Shoving down her feelings with an almost angry sense of determination, Ochako left the cafeteria without looking back.
~~~
“SHIT!” Ochako yelled as she looked up to where a villain with a growth quirk was smashing his fist through buildings left and right. Ochako thanked whatever gods there were that she was in her hero costume, having gone out to train right before the villain appeared. People began to scream and run as debris fell like rain from the sky, pummeling the streets and destroying the smaller buildings below the skyscrapers.
This was bad. Under normal circumstances, villains were a bad thing in general, but here on I-Island, where the population was smaller and the area of land was limited, a villain appearance became even worse. These people had nowhere to go, and it was obvious that people were beginning to panic over that fact, their eyes wide and their paces frantic as they searched for a path to safety.
Ochako did not hesitate to jump into the action, her legs carrying her to the building right beside the villain. Ducking to avoid the falling debris, Ochako activated her quirk on herself and shot into the air, floating upwards until she was able to reach the top of the crumbling structure. The villain was focused on the destruction he was causing, his face scrunched up in wicked glee as he rammed his fist into the building once more.
Ochako closed her eyes for a moment as she hid behind a large slab of debris, trying to think of a plan. Opening her eyes again, she scanned the area, looking for some way to subdue him. That’s when her eyes settled on the huge, open ceiling stadium the island often used for science festivals. Her eyes widening, she formed a plan in her mind. If she could get him to the stadium, the other heroes would be in a better position to help, and the steel arches that rose up on the side of the stadium might just trap his legs, keeping him from causing any more damage.
Jumping out from her hiding spot, Ochako pressed her fingers to the debris she had just been hiding behind and charged at the villain, the debris following her as she ran. The villain turned to look at her but wasn’t quite quick enough before the slab of broken building slammed into him, hitting him square in the face. The villain stumbled back with a pained roar, his large hand coming up to paw gingerly at his broken nose. When his eyes turned to Ochako, they spelled out death in the worst way possible.
Ochako wasted no time using her quirk on herself to jump from building to building, continuing to fling debris and spew insults at him as she ran. The villain focused solely on her, his eyes flashing dangerously as he sped up, following her as she streaked for the stadium. The villain was hot on her heels, hand reaching out to snatch her when suddenly the villain was thrown backward. The large beast of a man landed firmly on his butt, creating a small crater in the street. Ochako snapped her head around just in time to see a flash of green as Izuku launched at the villain, who was attempting to stand back up. Izuku’s next move forced the man back down onto the street. The villain growled in frustration as he placed his hands on the street and jumped up onto the balls of his feet.
“Deku!” Ochako yelled as Izuku went to knock him down again, only to have to dodge as the villain swiped at him with both huge hands. Izuku used his quirk to jump far away from the villain’s reach before looking at Ochako. The floaty hero in training beckoned him over as the villain began to push himself back onto his humongous feet.
“Help me lead him to the stadium, we can subdue him there,” Ochako said as soon as Izuku reached her. Her best friend nodded enthusiastically, a wide smile on his face, and his eyes sparkling as he regarded her plan. It was a simple plan but one that would work exceedingly well for this unique situation. Leaping away from her again, Izuku aimed a powered punch at the villain’s face rather than his gut, the gear on his arms from Melissa keeping him from breaking his arms on impact. The attack struck true as the villain’s head was snapped to the side while his body remained standing upright.
Ochako sent another block of debris his way, relishing in the villain’s roar of pain as a car got lodged in his eye. The combination of attacks from the two young heroes set something off in the villain then, his aura turning murderous as he suddenly sprinted at the both of them. Ochako let out a surprised squeak and leaped away from where the villain reached for her, jumping onto the next building roof. She could feel herself getting tired but she kept up her series of distracting attacks and dodging the villain’s attempts to catch her. Izuku was doing the same thing, using his power quirk to keep out of the villain’s reach while simultaneously hitting the villain over and over again.
“YOU GUYS ARE DEAD!” The villain roared, surprising both Izuku and Ochako with his booming voice. Continuing on, the pair worked seamlessly in unison to bring the villain closer and closer to his trap.
The villain reached out and grabbed a chunk of a nearby building before hurling it at the two young heroes. Ochako felt the very corner of it hit her leg and felt something snap painfully but she managed to keep from falling off the building she was on. Her pained yelp brought Izuku over to her but she waved him off, pointing subtly to the stadium and mouthing to keep going. Izuku looked worried and hesitant but moved ahead, aiming another hit on the villain. Ochako kept moving, forcing down the bile that rose in her throat at the pain, and used her quirk to keep as much weight off of her injured leg as possible. She felt nauseous from both her quirk and her injury but she managed to stay focused, blocking out the world around her as she focused on avoiding each attack from behind her.
A loud, terrified squeal jolted Ochako out of her focus, her eyes darting down to where the villain was reaching for someone in the street. Her eyes widened as she took in the wavy blonde hair and shining blue eyes she had come to loathe in the recent days, her heart quickening as she watched the villain open his fingers, ready to grab at her small frame. Izuku had not yet noticed what the villain was doing, too preoccupied with the villain’s other hand, which was continuing to swipe at him as he flew around. Ochako knew her feelings were less than positive when it came to Melissa Shield, but she also knew she was a nice person and that those feelings only existed due to her jealousy.
“MELISSA LOOK OUT!” Ochako screamed, ignoring the pain that rocketed up her leg as she launched off of the building and right for the villain’s hand. She felt the villain’s fingers close around her body instead of Melissa’s and let out a pained scream as he clenched his digits around her body.
Raising his hand up, the villain threw Ochako from his grip, watching with unsuppressed glee as her body collided with the side of a building with a sickening crunch. She almost immediately blacked out, the distant sound of someone screaming her name just barely registering in her brain as she lost consciousness.
~~~
Ochako felt like she had just gone through a tornado. Everything hurt, her body, her arms, her legs, her face, everything throbbed. She groaned softly and would’ve laughed at how weak and pathetic it sounded if it weren’t for the pain she was in.
“Come on, open your eyes!” A voice said from somewhere above her. She had no idea who the voice belonged to but they sounded kind. She groaned again and felt her eyelids twitch as she subconsciously tried to open her eyes. She wanted to sleep for the rest of her life at the moment but she could still feel herself coming out of it regardless, little white spot starting to peek through the darkness surrounding her.
“Come on, ‘Chako!”
She finally managed to crack open her eyes but immediately shut them again at the bright light that assaulted them.
“Can someone turn off the damn sun?” Ochako muttered as she attempted once again to open her eyes.
This time, the light was less harsh as her sensitive eyes got used to it. She blinked a few times and realized that she had been taken to some sort of hospital, the white walls and sleek tile flooring making the light shine ever brighter. The smell of medical supplies stung her nose and she had to refrain from scrunching up her face in disgust.
“Oh thank god!” The same voice from earlier said, dripping with relief. Ochako looked over to the side to see Izuku sitting in a chair by her bedside, tears shining on his cheeks and his hair an absolute mess. He was clutching her hand in his, his fingers shaking against her soft skin. “Oh thank god, Ochako, I-I thought I l-lost you!”
Ochako stared at him in shock and glanced down at their intertwined hands. She was disgusted with how much her heart soared at the sight, her eyes narrowing slightly as she coached herself to behave.
Izuku glanced at her face before looking down at their joined hands. Noticing her expression, Izuku quickly released her hand and raised it to rub the back of his neck nervously.
“S-Sorry,” Izuku said, completely unaware of the cold feeling that washed over Ochako as soon as he let go of her. “I was just scared I’d lose you, I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable.”
Shaking herself from her daze, Ochako waved him off with a bright smile.
“You have nothing to apologize for, absolutely nothing Deku,” She said. “I was just a little surprised is all.”
Izuku’s shoulders slumped as he relaxed, a small smile forming on his lips.
“Yeah, I can see why that would seem really unexpected.”
Ochako was just about to say something when a loud voice echoed through the other side of her hospital room door, making both Ochako and Izuku look around at the door.
“Where is she!?”
“She’s in room 136,” a deep voice they did not recognize responded.
They both heard the sound of hurried footsteps and not too long after, the door to Ochako’s room burst open, revealing a red-faced Melissa, her eyes shining with tears and her hair hanging around her shoulders in a tangled mess. Before Ochako could react, Melissa threw herself at the floaty girl, her arms linking behind her neck and burying her face in Ochako’s shoulder. Ochako’s mouth hung open in shock and it took her a moment of hesitation before she gingerly wrapped her arms around the sobbing blonde.
“Thank you, t-thank you, thank you!!!” Melissa bawled. “Y-You saved me! You didn’t have to do that but you did and you almost died because of me. I will always be in your debt, thank you so much!”
Melissa leaned back, her eyes shining as she stared at Ochako. Ochako was completely shocked but managed to give her a shaky smile.
“It was my pleasure, I couldn’t just stand there and watch you get killed, not when I was there to do something and help people. You don’t owe me anything, but I did appreciate the hug,” Ochako said softly.
Melissa let out another soft sob and encompassed her in a gentler hug this time.
“Thank you,” Melissa mumbled again before climbing off of Ochako and standing back up, using her hands to smooth out her rumpled dress.
“What happened to the villain?” Ochako asked.
“Oh! Izuku went down and picked you up after you saved me, but at that point, other heroes had shown up. He told them your plan so they continued it. The metal arches of the stadium trapped him and he was subdued and arrested by the authorities. He won’t be seeing the light of day any time soon,” Melissa said.
“Hey, Melissa? Could you give me a minute alone with ‘Chako?” Izuku asked suddenly.
Ochako snapped her gaze to Izuku and saw that he was avoiding her gaze, his eyes fixed on his girlfriend.
Melissa smiled and nodded, wiping away her tears as she sniffled.
“O-Of course, take all the time you need.”
Melissa then moved over to Izuku and cupped his ear, leaning in to whisper something to him. Even when she was injured and exhausted, Ochako felt a boiling rage at the sight of the two of them. She was so disgusted with herself as her jealous feelings came rearing up stronger than ever. Her mood only worsened as Izuku blushed a brilliant shade of red and glared half-heartedly at Melissa, who laughed in a sing-song voice. Heading out the door, Melissa threw Izuku a wink just before she shut the door with a click.
The room was silent. Izuku stood awkwardly for a while and Ochako shifted uncomfortably in her bed, the tension almost palpable in the air.
“So… what did you want to talk to me about?” Ochako asked quietly.
“Why did you do it?”
“Huh?” Ochako asked, not expecting the question.
“Why did you put yourself at the risk of death to save Melissa? I mean, I’m grateful, but why?”
“Because I’m a hero, Deku, I’m not going to bypass someone in need.”
“I know, but I feel like there is something more behind it. You didn’t deflect the attack, you took the attack, why?”
“Because I-”
“Please,” Izuku said softly. “Don’t lie to me.”
Ochako sucked in a breath at his tone. Swallowing thickly and averting her gaze, she nodded.
“Alright, sorry.”
“It’s okay, I just want to know.”
“I just… I just didn’t want you to lose someone you love,” Ochako said.
“HUH?” Izuku said, his head snapping up.
“I just… I don’t know, I haven’t seen you act this happy before, being with Melissa has definitely changed your mood for the better and I didn’t want you to lose that. You told me you were bullied a lot as a kid but now you have someone to hold you, make you laugh, kiss you, love you, and I didn’t want you to lose this new piece of your life. I know I got injured but it was worth it if it means you get to stay happy.”
Ochako then closed her eyes, hoping and praying that he wouldn’t read too deeply into her words. She loved Izuku but she did not want to ruin his current relationship by stupidly admitting her love for him. The silence seemed to stretch forever as she waited impatiently for him to respond.
“Oh my god…,” Izuku whispered.
Ochako chanced a peek at him and saw him lean back in his chair, his hand covering his eyes, a deep sigh escaping him. Ochako fought the tears back as she closed her eyes again. She had ruined everything. He knew and he hated her. He was disgusted with her. He wanted to end their friendship and never see her again. Ochako couldn’t stop the tidal wave of thoughts that flooded her brain like some sort of infectious disease, attacking her heart over and over again as she pictured every terrible scenario of the future with him.
“I’m such a damn moron!”
Izuku’s sudden exclamation made her eyes snap open and meet his gaze which she hadn’t known was intently locked on her.
“Gods, Ochako I am so sorry,” Izuku groaned. “You’ve got it all wrong and it’s all my fault.”
“What do you mean?”
Izuku met her gaze and smiled nervously.
“Melissa and I aren’t together.”
“What?” Ochako asked. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing.
“I am not dating Melissa Shield,” Izuku said, taking a deep breath. “The only person I love is you, and I almost lost you.”
Ochako’s whole body suddenly felt as if it had been jolted by lightning. Her eyes went wide and her jaw dropped slightly as his words sank in.
The only person I love is you.
The only person I love is you.
The only person I love is you.
“W-What?” Ochako whispered.
Izuku shuffled nervously in his seat and broke her gaze.
“I understand if you don’t feel the same way, but I needed to tell you how I feel. I almost lost you, and that made me realize that if I didn’t tell you, I would regret it for the rest of my life.”
Izuku then reached forward and gently took hold of her hand. Ochako looked down at their intertwined hands and this time didn’t hate herself for the feeling of joy that bubbled up in her chest, the beast that had been tormenting her with jealousy, roaring in triumph. A few stray tears slid down her cheeks and her heart nearly burst out of her chest when Izuku leaned forward and gently wiped the tears from her face with the pad of his thumb.
“I didn’t screw this up, did I?” Izuku asked nervously.
Ochako shook her head, her bangs swaying in front of her face.
“You didn’t ruin anything, I think you did fine.”
Swallowing thickly, Izuku glanced down at her lips and then back up to her eyes, wordlessly asking for permission. Ochako nodded enthusiastically and leaned forward to meet him in the middle for the kiss she had dreamed of having for so long. Ochako sighed contentedly as his soft lips met hers and leaned into his touch when he reached up to cup her cheek. Her own arms snaked over his shoulders and linked behind his neck, running her fingers through the hair on the base of his neck.
Izuku groaned at the feeling of her fingers running through his hair, his heart thumping so wildly he idly wondered if everyone in the hospital could hear it. She felt so good against him, her taste instantly addicting and her wonderful smell making him sigh in bliss. He loved her so much, had loved her for so long, he couldn’t believe he had accidentally prohibited his chances of being with the love of his life by being around the sweet blonde so much. The pair finally broke apart, a thin line of saliva still connecting them before diminishing as Izuku moved down to rest his forehead against hers. The two were panting slightly, trying to catch their breaths from the electrifying, albeit clumsy first kiss.
“Wow…” Ochako mumbled against him causing Izuku to chuckle. Ochako melted against him as the vibrations of his laugh rumbled against her figure from where she leaned against his chest. Making sure to be mindful of her injuries, Izuku pulled her closer and buried his face in the crook of her neck.
“I love you, Ochako Uraraka,” Izuku said, making her breath hitch slightly despite already hearing those words from earlier. “Would you be my girlfriend? Please?”
“Of course!” Ochako almost squealed in response. “I love you too Izuku Midoriya.”
Izuku chuckled and pulled her tighter against him, his face snuggling closer to her soft skin. Suddenly, Ochako pulled back a bit, a concentrated look on her face.
“Wait, if you weren’t with Melissa, why were you spending so much time with her? I’m totally fine with you having female friends, I’m not that kind of girlfriend, but you were always holding hands, and whispering to each other, and going to each other’s rooms at night,” Ochako asked, pulling back a bit more to get a good look at his face. Izuku chuckled and blushed.
“Oh, that,” Izuku said, rubbing the back of his neck again. “So, I actually spent so much time with her because when she was meeting with me to talk about new gear for my quirk in battle, I accidentally let it slip that I liked you. I was super embarrassed at first but then she told me I needed to confess to you. I didn’t know how, I didn’t even know where to begin, so she said she would help me. Every day at lunch she would whisper to me things that I could say to you, which was oftentimes why I ended up a blushing mess. She would hold my hand so I would know what to do when comforting you. She also did it with her pinky up to get me used to the feeling of holding your hand without having your quirk activate on me. She even gave me these,” Izuku said holding up a small glass box he pulled from his pocket containing two clear things that looked like contact lenses.
“She made them for you, they go over your pinky fingers so you won’t float anything without having to keep your pinky up all the time. She came to my room in the evening to discuss plans for how to confess to you, but she always left before curfew. Nothing ever happened between us. She was just kind enough to help my dumb ass,” Izuku joked causing Ochako to smile. “The last thing she said to me before walking out that door a few minutes ago was ‘Now’s your chance, go get her, tiger.’” Izuku said, his blush coming back in full force to stain his cheeks.
Ochako laughed heartily at that, her heart lifting and her biased jealousy of the blonde fading away completely. She was going to have to thank Melissa another time but for now, she had other things she needed to do first. Reaching for him, Ochako sealed their lips again, relishing in the surprised squeak that came from his mouth as she pulled him as close to her as possible. When they parted again, her eyes were filled with love and light for the boy in front of her.
“I love you, ‘Zuku, thank you for everything.”
“I love you too, ‘Chako, so much.”
As much as she wanted to continue snuggling with him, Ochako was tired, the pain of her injuries dragging her stamina back down after her temporary energy high. Laying her back down, Izuku gently pressed a kiss to her forehead and tucked her in, a bright smile on his face.
“Sleep well, Ochako, I’ll always be here to protect you.”
Ochako fell asleep then, a wide smile teasing her lips, her mind filling with loving images of the two of them, her heart warming as she felt Izuku settle beside her to watch over her just like he promised.
Expecting! (Izuocha) (Part 2)
Summary: The world may never be the same. Izuku and Ochako have to answer for their choice to have a child. Navigating pregnancy and heroics is no small task, but together, they are determined to succeed.
Part 1 "YOU WANT ME TO WHAT?!"
"Don't worry, darling, I assure you this is completely-"
"THERE IS NO WAY! NO. NO."
"Ochako-"
"Come, darling, if you just move this way-"
"I. AM NOT. POSING. NAKED!"
———————————————————————————————————–
Chapter 2: Nudity, fighting and kicking
———————————————————————————————————–
Akihi Aiuchi let her subject fume. She watched the steady rise and fall of her hero's chest. Uravity's glare was firing directly upon her. It was familiar – she had seen it on television many times as Uravity confidently knocked out some ne'er-do-well.
Akihi sighed. She should have expected this kind of response. Still, she had figured it would not be quite this bad.
"Are you done yet?"
The hero blinked at her. The question stunned Uravity, who struggled for an answer. Akihi quirked up an eyebrow at that. It was rare to see the hero flabbergasted.
But her silence could be an answer enough. Time to lay on the charm.
"…As I was trying to say, darling, your beauty – which, I will say, is awe-inspiring – will truly shine in the nude. I know it's scary, but I get reactions like yours all the time." She spoke with her usual polished flourish, hands floating in the air as she worked her subject hard.
Akihi moved over to the side of the wide, open photography studio where she had been tasked with shooting the most famous hero couple in the world. It was a truly magnificent, daunting assignment. She had broken a few things in her exuberance when she got the call.
This was the chance of a lifetime for her. A moment to make a name for herself and get steady work as a hero photographer, like she always wanted. The freelance gig was exhausting – and rarely gave her subjects as stupendous as the heroes behind her.
She smirked to herself as she picked up a large binder she had laid over by some of her bags. It never hurt to bring a portfolio around on an assignment. You never knew when an opportunity might arise.
"But there's a reason they called me here today," she spoke with confidence as she trudged back to the two heroes. Their aghast faces were so unlike the confident smiles she had come to know them by. It was strange to see them so at a loss. Unnerving, even.
They would bounce back quickly enough.
"I'm the best at what I do, darling. And I know what I'm talking about. These are the poses that will truly shine."
She popped open her binder to a familiar set of pages: the baby bump photos. Expectant mothers laying about casually, their bodies on partial or full display. Each subject was posed artfully, paintings come to life, the work of her own precise directions. Arms, legs, backs, sides, and blankets - they obscured any body part which would make the photos qualify as erotic. The mother and the baby always took centre stage.
It was one of her side gigs, a snowballing series of jobs that had made her well-known as a pregnant photographer. It was not necessarily her favourite of subjects to shoot, but it paid the bills.
"Oh. Wow." The gravity hero's face melted under the onslaught of gorgeous images. She reached out for the binder and Akihi gladly deposited it into her waiting hands. Deku looked over his wife's shoulders, looking just as captivated by the photos.
"That's a lot nicer than I thought it would be," he said slowly.
Akihi smiled to herself again at the stars she could see in her subject's eyes. She called herself the best for a reason.
"It's like the fact that they're naked doesn't even matter," Deku muttered to himself, scratching his chin thoughtfully. "You put them in such a way that their pregnancy stands out more than anything else.
"Well, of course, darling!" Akihi stated, punctuated with a loud tap of her high-heeled foot. The noise startled the two, sending their heads quickly upward. "Nude does not have to be sexy – not unless you want it to be. Nude can absolutely be tasteful. And there's no better way to showcase a pregnant body, in my estimation."
She pointed a finger toward Uravity and the swelling belly which would cause the world of heroes to erupt.
"There's no better way to showcase your beautiful, pregnant body for that matter."
She stated it as a matter of fact – because it was. She smiled confidently at her subjects before shuffling herself back over to her tripod. "So, what do you say?"
Much to her chagrin, the two heroes did not jump up in enthusiasm after being mesmerized by her photos. On the contrary, Uravity bit her lip and looked over to her husband, as if the answer would be with him. But he looked just as clueless, giving her a half-hearted shrug.
"I…I don't know."
The words came out of Uravity's mouth slowly, prolonging the torment they put Akihi under. She thought about her alternative options, none of which she expected would land her the notoriety a nude photo might. She could feel the floor give way beneath her, the ceiling she was trapped under getting farther and farther out of reach.
Akihi stared sadly at Uravity, who was slowly rubbing her protruding belly. The hero bit her lip as she looked down at it. It was far from the happy, glowing look she would want for a photograph.
Uravity looked up toward her partner. Deku did not look nearly as concerned. Rather, there was a sudden fierceness in his eyes, a gaze the world was quite familiar with.
Akihi piqued an eyebrow, wondering if perhaps he might offer some kind of resolution.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The nights apart from Ochako were always the most difficult.
Izuku often found himself counting his blessings and wondering how he ever got much rest before he met her.
Sleeping by her side made the bed feel like a cloud. An indescribable sense of warmth, comfort, and wholeness permeated through him when he could go to bed in her arms – or vice-versa. Even after many hundreds of nights together, it was something he treasured deeply.
Which is why he let out a disappointed groan when he felt around the bed and could not find her there.
He groggily cracked open his eyes, the sense of losing her managing to wake him up. His half-conscious mind struggled to formulate much beyond a desire to be with her and a longing now that she was gone. He could not immediately think of anything that should have parted them. Neither had a night shift. She had been there when he had gone to bed. He should be able to hold her tight.
His dozy mind slowly rebooted as he felt around the bed, feeling the warm spot she left behind, a pale ghost of her.
Right. She was pregnant. She frequently left in the middle of the night to make bathroom visits. She made a point of trying to do her utmost not to disturb him, figuring at least one of them could get a good night's sleep.
He ached at that wish but could not argue with her point. Duty called and he could not respond as well if he was tired. There was also little use trying to stay awake for her sake. He could sleep like the dead after a full day's work.
Which meant that she had been gone for longer than usual. Her more sporadic departures from their shared bed would never wake him. But when she left for an hour or more, he inevitably took notice, his body missing the familiar presence.
"Ochako…?" he asked the air, hoping she might materialize before him. But his love did not appear and he was left to look around in the dark in hopes of finding her.
Through blinking eyes, he spotted her on the balcony of their third-story apartment, silhouetted against the pale night. Her back was to him but he could see she had put on a sweater over her nightdress, which almost assuredly meant she had been there for some time.
He wracked his dazed mind to consider why she would be out there if not the physical aches and pain brought about by her pregnancy.
Mind whirring, he got himself up. He tried to blink the sleep out of his eyes as he focused on her, swaying sadly against the dark night. Whatever was bothering her, he would do his utmost to help. That was his calling.
He quietly stepped out through the open glass door to the balcony. Ochako did not move, apparently not noticing his presence. Hoping not to startle her, he moved forward to stand by her side, leaning himself against the railing.
"Oh! Deku! You…you should go back to sleep. I…has it really been that long?"
He nodded gently. She groaned.
"Why can't I keep it together…" she murmured to herself, as if he was mere scenery. "I'm sorry. I just wanted some fresh air to think. I'll come back to bed."
She made to move but he quickly reached out to hold her hand in place. She looked back up at him with questions in her eyes.
"Thinking sounds…nice," he mumbled, trying to disarm her with a kind word. "I'm alright to stay up for a bit. What are you thinking about?"
She pouted up at him for a moment, her face morphing in an adorable, toothless kind of anger. But her mock fury abated quickly. She let out a sigh and turned her head.
"You shouldn't skip out on sleep."
"And you shouldn't keep your feelings bottled up."
She shook her head at that, not caring to turn to face him. The night breeze played with the ends of her hair, the locks dancing helplessly In the wind.
The chill started to bite into his naked arms. He rubbed at them but did not move, stubbornly remaining by her.
"I guess I've just been thinking about what it's going to be like for me when this is all over."
He noticed her idly rubbing her belly, the flesh barely contained within the oversized nightdress. She did not need to say what "this" was.
"Well, I suppose it is going to be a new experience for us raising-"
"That's not what I meant," she cut him off, adding a sigh for good measure. She reached her hands out toward the night sky. She twisted them to stare at her palms and the fingertips holding the fearsome power of her Quirk. She balled them into fists before cocking her right hand backward. She thrust it forward quickly, punching at the night with a force he had first-hand experience with.
"I can feel it. It feels off. I can't put my complete weight into it," she murmured. She buried her face into her arms. He could hear the soft thud of her forehead meeting metal. "And it's going to stay that way even after he's born. The body I've worked my whole life to develop, to be a hero, is never going to be the same."
Izuku immediately wrapped an arm around her hunched shoulders, pulling her as close as the awkward position would allow. He pressed a kiss into her hair and rubbed circles into her upper arm, hoping the motion could soothe her aching body and mind.
"You'll bounce back. You always do." He proclaimed it with absolute surety, borne from years of experience. Uravity could never be kept down for long.
But despite his certainty, she snorted at the remark.
"I can already see the headlines when I try to get back to heroics. 'Uravity: Lost a step? Uravity: Can't keep up? Uravity: Is she too fat to be a hero?' 'Super moms should stay at home.'"
She practically mimed out the inflammatory words, hands emoting outward into the night.
Her arms eventually fell miserably over the edge of the balcony. She slowly moved them downward, back to her consternating belly. She continued to rub it forlornly as if it were an itch refusing to go away.
"I don't know if I'll ever be as strong as I was again. If I even can be a hero after this."
They both knew the tremors left on the hero world by their parenthood would leave them on shaky ground afterward. Ochako being out of commission for so long was naturally going to tank her ranking. The effect on her popularity would be more mixed, but they were bracing themselves for the worst.
A worst, Izuku knew, that was getting to Ochako more and more each day.
He sighed as he disentangled himself from her for a moment. He gave her some needed space, what she had sought in the cold night. Trying to tackle this was going to take some husbandly savvy.
He might have to break out his surprise for this one.
With a yawn, Izuku leaned over the railing himself. He waited, looking sidelong at his wife. She was still completely engrossed in her baby bump – the sign of the coming miracle. Her brown hair was dishevelled, but he always liked the look, knowing how many happy memories he had of her that way. The moonlight bathed her face in a mixture of ethereal light and shadow, making her seem almost otherworldly.
There was no person on this earth more beautiful.
Without sparing another thought, Izuku did what he knew he had to.
He cocked his arm and directed a hard punch toward her cheek.
There was no real force to it, not that he had much energy to summon much strength anyway. But it was solid and quick, a jab that would knock an unsuspecting foe off-balance.
As he suspected, she caught it with ease, reaching out her left hand to stop his fist. She clamped her fingers on it firmly.
Izuku felt his feet start to lift up off the ground. With her quick tug, he was full on-floating, suspended in midair. He would be flailing helplessly were he not used to the sensation.
"You caught me." He beamed down at her, voice infused with the sheer joy and awe he received whenever he saw her in action, even if for a fleeting moment.
She pouted at him and averted her eyes. "You didn't even try that time."
There was no venom in her reply. It was the banter of two heroes who always worked to keep each other on their toes. This is what they did to keep each other sharp: launch surprise attacks to test reflexes and reaction speed. It led to its share of awkward moments, especially with her being a lot better at it. But for the battle-ready couple, it was a good way to squeeze in training amidst the rest of their daily lives.
"I did too!" Izuku protested as he tried to push his body closer to the ground. "I'd never hold back against you."
She snorted at that, but he was delighted when it brought a smile to her face. "You'd punch a pregnant lady?"
"Under an accepted set of rules for engagement, I'd punch a pregnant hero, sure."
She guffawed and he joined in the laughter, overjoyed to get a moment of levity. It seemed so rare these days, with all the stress brought on by the pregnancy. But he would never stop working to try to hear those joyous sounds come from her lips.
Ochako shook her head, before giving him a smirk.
"My win," she stated matter-of-factly, letting him fall back down to earth. "Well?"
Izuku landed on his feet – this time, anyway. He smiled gently at her as he eyed her lips, where he normally bestowed a reward for their little training game. But as his eyes roamed down her figure, he had a better idea.
He let himself fall to the ground, dashing quickly before Ochako could react. She let out a startled yelp, but he halted her progress with his hands firm on her hips. He came eye level with her stomach, swollen with the life of their first child. Something he once could not have ever dreamed of.
Without a word, he pressed his lips to it through the dress, a gesture he had only done once…or twice. Maybe three times. It hardly mattered.
"Hey!" Ochako exclaimed indignantly as Izuku sprang upright onto his feet. "That hardly counts."
"I think it does, logically. A kiss can be anywhere," Izuku replied with a grin. "And this way, it's kind of like kissing both of you at once, right?
She shook her head again but smiled right back. Without a word, she swung a muscled arm around him, pulling him with her to lean out towards the stars again.
"Thank you."
Izuku let out a breath of relief. It was no small challenge helping Ochako out of her fugues these days, but it was something he embraced willingly. Considering she was bearing their child, it was the very least he could do.
But it was not enough.
"I know you'll be able to be a hero when things settle down. Because you'll never stop being a hero. It's who you are." He interlocked his fingers through hers, squeezing tightly. Delight filled him upon seeing the flash of red in her cheeks, though he did not doubt his own matched hers at this point.
"Izuku…" she looked up at him, eyes wide, lips stretched into a beautiful smile, letting out a silent siren's call.
Focus. He had to focus.
"…And the same will go for me."
Her head stopped moving. He had not noticed it had been slowly encroaching towards him. She blinked, an eyebrow quirking upward.
"What?"
He gulped. He had mulled it over a lot, but he was not sure how she might take the news. There was nothing for it, though.
"Well…I've been talking with the agency and, well…assuming you're alright with it, of course, this is a joint decision, but I think I'd prefer it, and…well, I…"
His eyes started to wander away from her, but a squeeze of his hand brought him back.
"Izuku."
"…right, sorry. Well, the thing is…"
He let his tired eyes fall closed as he blurted it out in a rush.
"I've set up a year of paternity leave."
The pronouncement did not appear to phase her at first. She gave him a blank stare and an empty smile, her mind evidently trying to process the information in the early morning night.
But as her eyebrows furrowed, the back of his neck started to tingle. He figured she would find happiness in the information eventually, but he expected some damage control might be necessary to start.
"I know you're probably worried, but I did a lot of thinking about this, and I have it all figured out and that look it's-"
"But Izuku…" the simple, ice-laced words cut off his mumble storm, freezing his tongue in place. "I…I don't understand. How?"
He took a breath to try to collect himself. The chill of the night started to prickle unpleasantly against his skin. He did what he could to ignore it.
"…My agency agreed to it when I asked." The awkward conversations and surprisingly joyous embraces flashed through his mind. "I have the paperwork all figured out-"
"But what about our budget?" She interrupted him again, her voice echoing loudly into the night. "We have so many expenses and I don't know when I'll be able to get back into work after my own leave runs out…"
She trailed off as she looked up at him. He hoped his smile was reassuring enough.
"I'll still be getting most of my salary, as long as I put in some odd hours – which I'll be able to do from home. I even have Chika working to line up some easy endorsements for us with the extra time I'll have."
He remembered his agent's face-stretching grin at the prospect of marketing the world's premier hero couple having a child.
"She thinks she'll be able to get us some pretty easy hits. A once-a-month afternoon trip should be able to supplement us."
Izuku could see she was taken aback, but he had come prepared. He had done his own number crunching trying to see if this was possible. He knew she was going to test his math, but he was confident it would pass her meticulous calculations.
He was distraught to see her face morph into a grimace.
"But your dream!" The tranquillity of the night was completely shattered as he jumped with the force of her exclamation. She paused as she stared out into the starry sky, realizing her own volume.
"You…you're going to be so far behind trying to do this," the words flowed more quietly but carried no less will. "You'll fall out of the top 10. It could take years for you to climb back up there again."
She turned back to him, a surprising fierceness in her eyes, the fire in them burning strong through the tears.
"I won't let you throw away your dream for my sake."
He could count on his fingers the time she was well and truly mad at him. It normally made him shrink back a bit in fear, giving him the unpleasant feeling of what it might be like to be a villain facing her down.
But he stood tall this time. This time, he knew he was in the right. He did not shrink back from her but met her gaze head-on, sparks lighting between them, as they always did whenever they faced one another as opponents.
"I married you because you gave me a new dream, Ochako."
The hit struck true. Her bout of rage crumpled, tears matching his own coming down her rosy cheeks. She sniffled as her fists unfurled.
"You…you…"
"I'm never going to stop wanting to be a hero. Or stop trying to live up to All Might."
He could see the empty pedestal in his mind, the spot for Japan's top hero in flux ever since Endeavour retired. It was there for the taking, waiting for him to leap up and be everything his hero ever wanted him to be.
But there was more to life than that. She had shown him.
He took a chance to step forward, reaching out toward her. She slowly clasped her hand in his, allowing him to bring her in close.
"But the life we've built together is every bit as important to me. I'm not going to leave either of you behind to try to pursue that."
"Deku…" she whispered into his chest, grabbing the loose fabric of his t-shirt.
"You decided you were willing to risk your own career to bring a new life into this world. It wouldn't be fair if I didn't do the same."
She pushed away slightly to look up at him. Her eyes were still misty, but he let out a sigh of relief at seeing the bright smile rising on her face again.
"Mad man."
"Cloudy," he retorted, earning a chuckle and a shaking head.
"You really want this, huh?"
"More than anything. Besides, what's a year off? We're Deku and Uravity."
"The world's greatest heroes," she muttered in answer, balling her hands back into her fearsome fists.
"And we'll head straight to the top…in due time." It was a slight edit to the usual line, but he pumped his own fist outward just the same, no-less exuberant in his rallying cry.
"Because together, we're unbeatable!" She shoved both of her arms outward, laughing, beaming up at him.
Izuku grinned back, warmed to his very core. It was true. No matter what obstacle, they would always fight back and overcome it together. In this, and in all things.
He suddenly felt his feet fall out from under him. Before he realized what was happening, he was tumbling backwards.
Ochako caught him again before he met the cold floor, a cheeky smile blossoming on her face. She had tripped him.
"That was dirty," he muttered, wanting to pout but finding himself unable to given just how happy he was.
"What was that you were saying about an 'accepted set of rules for engagement?'" She imitated him to a tee, the cadence of his voice sounding startling from her mouth.
He sighed dreamily, wondering again how he found himself here.
"I love you." He prided himself in getting an answering blush. But the line did not disarm nearly as well as it once did.
"And I love you too. More than anything."
She leaned down to claim her prize.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Akihi watched the couple whisper to one another, her nude portfolio before them. It was torturous, trying to wait and hope they would come to their senses and see the magnificence of what she could do with her camera.
But the starlight in her mind's eye started to fade. Their hesitance would be hard to overcome at this point. She would not be able to reach the fame she sought, not without a once-in-a-lifetime photo.
She balled her fist, catching her thoughts preparing to fall into another downward spiral. She could not let it end like this. She would get those photos. Her career – her destiny – depended on it.
"I-"
"What if…what if I posed with Ochako?"
The sheer shock of the question stayed Akihi's tongue and made her eyes bulge in amazement. The greatest young hero in the world was proposing to pose nude. For her camera.
Nude. For her camera.
NUDE. DEKU POSING NUDE.
She shook her head, trying to collect herself and find her own professionalism. This was a possibility she had not even considered. But this was her big chance. This was the opportunity she needed. He had gifted her a lasso to rope them in.
"Izuku!" Ochako exclaimed, turning her attention back toward her. "That's…that's…"
"That is an absolutely stupendous idea!" Akihi interrupted with the full force of her voice. She stepped into the couple's bubble, eagerly grabbing at the album. "The overwhelming, heartwarming intimacy of a couple posing nude would be absolutely perfect! The daring, the grace, the elegance of you two together, it would be absolutely fabulous!"
She flipped through the pages of her portfolio, getting near the back. She had only gotten a nude couple's shot a handful of times. Most men wanted nothing to do with such a thing. But when it happened, she always made it magic.
Indeed, the spells her photos cast started to have an effect on the two superstars. Their eyes lit up at the sight of her work. Couples embracing one another, their bodies posed to hide each other. A man kissing the belly of his pregnant wife, love pouring from the connection of skin. A man embracing his wife from behind, stroking her enlarged stomach with care.
"Incredible…" Uravity whispered. Akihi did her best to keep her grin from becoming too fiendish.
"And you two will look incredible as well, if you give me the chance." She put all the confidence she could muster into the statement. She would convince them. "Forget Japan, this photoshoot is going to rock the whole world. You'll rake in all the sponsorship money you could ever hope for."
That got the gravity hero to blink a few times. Akihi could practically her the ka-ching ringing in her mind. She had done her homework, and Uravity was well-known for her thriftiness.
"Izuku, do you…do you really want this? It's just so…revealing."
"They do look really nice, though…" he muttered to her as he ran a thumb over the laminated page. "Chika did say to make this as attention-grabbing as possible. And All Might did always say to be bold."
"I don't think he had this in mind."
"It won't be too bad if we do it together, will it?" His voice was barely above a whisper now as Akihi leaned forward, straining to hear. "We've dealt with worse. But I won't push anymore if you feel uncomfortable."
The pause was absolutely maddening. Akihi could feel the hairs on her neck standing on end. She dared not speak, fearing she might ruin Deku's effort to convince his wife.
Uravity let out a sigh, closing her eyes to the photos in front of her.
"Alright," she stated softly. "Let's do it."
"YOU ARE GOING TO BE BEAUTIFUL AND YOU WILL NOT REGRET THIS!"
The thunder of her own voice shattered the serene moment. The hero pair jumped as Akihi lunged forward, seizing her portfolio from their hands.
"Changing rooms are off to the side. I'll get everything ready!"
She cackled as she went about her set-up, already envisioning her work on every magazine cover in the country.
Akihi shifted around quickly in her excitement, setting up in record time. With that, she waited, until the two heroes - her tickets to the stars - slowly edged back into the room.
Their physiques were every bit as impressive beneath the clothing, but she kept that comment to herself. Their nerves were evident - their faces bright, with towels pulled closely to their bare skin. She would have to tread lightly if she was going to get them through this.
"Umm...so what do we...how should we..?" Uravity could barely string a few words together, her eyes firmly directed at the floor.
Akihi poked her head out from behind her camera. "Leave it to me, my dears."
She worked her magic, carefully ordering them into a correct sitting position. She dared not touch them and risk staining such priceless art. But they were amenable enough to her suggestions as she instructed them carefully.
Deku sat atop a pink bench Akihi had set up. He nervously shifted around with his towel, until Ochako joined by sitting in front of him, a blanket draped across her lap.
Two of the greatest heroes of this generation sat against the screen before her, completely in the nude. They were at the complete mercy of her lens. They had gifted her – no, she had earned – a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
She had complete confidence in her abilities, but the awe of the moment made her hands shake a bit as she adjusted her camera on its tripod. She carefully unleashed her Quirk, conjuring a small ball of light above the two to better illuminate their features.
"Is this…is this alright? It feels…weird."
Uravity wore a bashfulness so unlike her public persona. She awkwardly tried to squeeze herself in the seat between her husband's legs, as if wanting to be smaller. But the prominent bulge of life, bare for the world to see, made that impossible.
"This is fine. This is fine. Just have to think calming thoughts. This won't take long, right? Most photoshoots take a half-hour, but given the circumstances could we maybe..."
For his part, Deku had lost much of his bravado with the shedding of his clothing. He was pressed in behind Ochako and mumbling in tangents, an apparent effort to distract himself. Akihi had not photographed many men like this, but they tended towards either unashamed showmanship or nervously trying to control themselves. He fell into the latter camp.
It was strange, seeing two heroes in the buff like this. Without the grandeur of their outfits, they seemed so much more…plain.
Well, these two were still gorgeous, anyway. But no matter how they looked, they would be her meal ticket.
"You two look great, don't worry about it!" She said the words with a friendly gusto, keeping behind her camera. She deliberately hid her eyes, hoping to manage their nerves by keeping her face blocked. "These photos are going to be amazing! Miss Uravity, if you could just adjust your arm a little lower?"
"Like…like this?" She kept her eyes glued to the blanket across her lap as she moved her arm more centrally across her chest. The angle was perfect for preserving her modesty – exactly what Akihi was looking for.
"Yes, right there, perfect." Akihi pressed quickly on her camera, letting the pleasant whir of the shutter go. She eyed the test shots through her camera's display – good lighting, good body position, framed just right. It was nearly perfect.
The only thing she needed now was the heroic couple to appear less like they wanted to sprint out of the room.
"Marvelous, marvelous, darlings. I just need you to settle in now. Breathe deeply, close your eyes, and act natural."
"That's a little hard right now," Deku murmured from behind his wife, his face scrunched up with far too much tension.
"I can't believe I agreed to this…." Uravity said with a groan, shaking her head and fidgeting slightly in her seat.
It was no good. They were still much too tense. She took a couple of experimental shots in some desperation. They were not horrible – but they were far from what she was looking for like this.
"Beautiful," she lied, maintaining her vivacious façade. "Just take deep breaths. Keep calm. Pretend it's just the two of you together. You're embracing one another. You're in love, in love with the life you're creating!"
"…this is ridic-"
A sudden gasp ended Uravity's condemnation abruptly. Her eyes sprang open quickly, her mouth going slack. She moved a hand down to her belly, feeling around her stomach.
"Was that…?"
She gasped suddenly again. She tilted her head down, focusing intently on the bulging skin.
"…dear? Is there something-"
Uravity had no hesitation. She reached behind her to grab her husband's right hand, pulling it forward and placing it squarely on her stomach.
Deku raised his eyebrows, until his face lit up in a way eerily similar to his wife. His hands actually shook. He pushed his head forward over her shoulder to stare down at their interlocking hands.
Akihi watched from behind her camera as their eyes started to water. Serene smiles overtook their faces. The rest of the world had melted away for them.
"He's kicking." Deku's voice was an airy squeak. Fragile, as if it could shatter at any moment. Akihi could barely hear it; it was foreign to her ears, when she was so used to the booming dialect he used in public.
Uravity laughed lightly. "He's doing a pretty good impression of you."
"He's…he's really…" But the words died on his tongue as the tears started to roam down his face in earnest. He pressed a wet kiss into her rosy cheek. He settled into her shoulder, closing his eyes and basking in the moment.
Ochako let out a contented sigh. She shut her eyes as if falling into slumber, leaning back into him, relaxing into his embrace.
Akihi tried to focus carefully through the lens as she blinked back her own tears. She had to get this shot right.
She wanted to preserve this moment. A moment of two first-time parents, deeply in love, experiencing one of the incredible joys of pregnancy. Something they would look back fondly on. It would be a photograph they would cherish for a lifetime.
They were in the frame. She pressed the button gingerly, almost regretting interrupting the quiet of the wondrous moment with the whirring of camera shutters. Fortunately, the couple did not budge. They hardly seemed to care about anything but the faint kicks of the life they had created.
"Sublime," Akihi whispered, unable to stop herself from blurting out something to describe what had unfolded in front of her.
This was why she got into photography. The ability to capture moments, capture love, capture life itself. She could etch memories eternally, ensure they would truly last a lifetime. This was her calling.
Akihi let her forehead fall into her camera. Sometimes, she forgot why she started doing this in the first place. Fame, fortune – they did not matter. The two heroes before her, stripped of those things, showed her that.
They were a young, pregnant couple in love. She was someone trying to take a nice photo of them. Nothing more. They did not need to be. For today, this was enough.
Izuocha week 2018 Day 6: Longing
A little shorter and a lot fluffier since yesterday was...yeah
Enjoy!
It took Izuku a while to get used to his dorm room.
The room was a few feet larger than his old room, the ceiling a bit higher up, the window sitting at a different wall. It all left him a bit off center, even when he finished covering the one wall with all the All Might merch he brought with him he felt out of sorts.
Even being a floor taller than he was used to, seeing the ground so far away when he looked out his window throw him off.
Every little detail of his new living arrangement seemed intent on reminding him of one important fact: he was not at home anymore. He would not wake up in the morning and be sure the bathroom was available for an early morning shower; the quiet mornings were gone, replaced by the sounds of his fellow students rushing off to get ready in time for classes.
The most disheartening thing, childish as it sounded even to him, was that he would have to get used to getting by without his mom's homemade katsudon.
Realizing that fact didn't take long at all, and the pang of homesickness soon followed. He did not let it get in the way of his schoolwork or his training, he couldn't afford to. Still, his mood did take a hit for a while.
Naturally, this fact didn't escape his friends' notice one bit. Iida and Uraraka especially.
Iida had been insistent in trying to get him to open up about it, but had relented when Izuku simply said that the Kamino incident was still weighing on his mind. (Which, well, it was, but as much as it had been before) He soon left him be with a genuine declaration that he was available at any time if he wanted to talk anyway.
Uraraka was not so easily dissuade. She didn't hound him exactly, but she made a point of taking a minute out of the day when she could to talk to him, gently prodding at the subject of his failing mood.
He remained rather tight-lipped, dodging her questions and putting on a fake smile, assuring her (and himself) that he would feel better after some time passed. This did not convince her, so she simply changed her tactics.
During breaks and the evening before lights out, she invited herself over for study session and to goof off, sometimes bringing Tsuyu, Ashido or Kirishima with her while she was at it. She didn't ask any question about his mood then, simply content to get his mind off of whatever was bugging him.
He was a bit shy the first few times, but soon the calm air of comradery managed to put him at ease and helped him feel…more at home, essentially. It helped that the others shared the same worries that plagued him.
"I tell ya," Kirishima muttered one night, "I know it sounds kinda…kiddy, but I kinda miss my place back home sometimes." He put up his hands in placating gesture. "I mean it's fun here don't get me wrong! But…sometimes I kinda miss my ratty old bed y'know?"
"I miss my siblings back home, kero." Tsuyu said after he finished, sighing quietly. "Not having to cook for them after school feels a little…like something's missing from the day."
"Oh yeah." Ashido nodded with a dramatic pout, "but really, what I miss most is my mom's food." A chorus of "aww" floated in the room. "Oh come off it! My mom's cooking is the best! You haven't lived till you tried her rice omelets!"
"Not as good as my mom's ramen!" Kirishima said with a note of pride, puffing out his chest. "Manliest dish in the world!"
Soon they devolved into comparing their favorite dishes from back home, unfinished homework forgotten. Izuku couldn't help but feel a weight drop from his chest, knowing he wasn't the only one dealing with being homesickness.
"What about you Deku-kun?" Uraraka asked with a curious note to her voice. "You're mom probably has something super tasty right?"
Deku hesitated for a moment, before sweeping his eyes to see the rest of the room looking at him with rapt attention. "Katsudon…" He mumbled before shaking his head and clearing his throat, "my mom's katsudon is…the best."
"Eh!? Isn't that super basic though?"
"Basic is manly! It means you don't need anything fancy!"
"Fits Midoriya-chan at any right, kero."
And so conversation moved on easily, Izuku feeling more at home in his dorm room than he has in the past two weeks. He looked back to Uraraka, who a pleased smile on her face. "Uraraka-san?"
She smiled knowingly but hummed innocently, "yeah Deku-kun?"
"Thank you…for sticking your nose in."
Uraraka looked confused for a moment, before laughing. "That's what heroes do right?"
How could he argue with that?
--
The next evening, he limped back to the dorm after an extra long training session with All Might, his limbs aching and sluggish as he made his way to the kitchen to make himself a quick and simple sandwich before he went to sleep…and that's when it hits him.
The full and salty smell of katsudon, wafting from the kitchen at 8 PM.
"What the…?" He mumbled as he walked into the dining area, and saw Uraraka in front of the gas, stirring a large metal pot full of…something that smelled like heaven.
"Deku-kun!" She called out when she looked behind her to see him standing awkwardly under the threshold. "You came just in time! Sit down I'm almost done!"
He was in a daze as he sat down, the sight of Uraraka cooking striking him as oddly…domestic. Even more so as she took a sip, nodded in satisfaction, and filled up a bowl with a thick broth that made Izuku's mouth water.
She filled up a second bowl before picking them both up and walking to the table next to Izuku, "c'mon! Try it!" She went to get two pairs of chopsticks as he stared into his bowl, transfixed at the sight of meat and vegetables floating serenely in the broth, islands in an ocean. "It's the first time I cooked something like this, so it's probably a bit messy."
Izuku nodded and broke apart his chopsticks, muttering a blessing before digging in. The broth was a bit more watery than it looked, the vegetables a bit over down and the pork slightly stringy…it was delicious.
"It's amazing Uraraka-san." He said around a mouth full as he slowly savored the flavor. "Been a while since I ate katsudon…"
She laughed good naturedly, "yeah I figured after last night you could do with some uh…home cooking!" She flushed slightly as she turned to her own bowl. "I know it's probably not as good as your mom's but-"
"Uraraka-san." He said kindly, smiling at her. "Just the fact that you made it is enough." He flushed a bit as he realized what he said. "Y-you know, it's really thoughtful of you, to do this for me."
"It was nothing." She shook her head as she eat a bit of her own meal. "I know how it feels to miss your parents cooking…I was living out of the house even before the dorms, so it's been a long time since I had any of my mom's cooking." She adopted a nostalgic look on her face. "Especially her mochi…I always loved that." She shook her head. "Oh well, I guess that's what happens when you grow up right? No more parents to cook for you, gotta make the mochi yourself."
Izuku nodded absentmindedly, "right…" He looked down on his phone, typing in "mochi recipes" where Ochako couldn't see it. "But it doesn't mean you can't get help!" He motioned to the two bowls with a smile.
Ochako laughed, "just don't tell anyone else okay? If Mina-chan found out about this she'll have me making her food too…"
They spent the rest of the evening in fond silence, slowly eating their way through their food.
When they finished, they departed to their separate rooms, and when Izuku reached his, and sat down to sleep….he felt, finally, fully at home.
Every Second With You is a Blessing Chapter 2: Photograph
The light of the morning sun snuck through the leaves of the tree that Ochako is laying under, waking up slightly she realized that she had fallen asleep on Deku’s chest. Her first reaction was to lightly jump off him, turn completely red and get ready to apologize to him for doing that. But Deku was still sleeping his face wearing a large smile, his breathing in slow steady rhythm. Ochako took this opportunity to rest her head back against him, listening as his heartbeat, feeling his chest rise and fall, hearing him breathe. This is what made Ochako happy, the messy green haired dork of her dreams. He was able to get her from a crying mess to completely happy just by being with her, and unbeknownst to her, she was practically able to do the same thing to Izuku. Not wanting this to end, due to the uncertainty of when (and if) it would ever happen again, Ochako moved back to the position she was in when she woke up closed her eyes and fell right back asleep.
A couple of hours later Ochako woke up again this time for real. Deku, however, was still asleep, this amused Ochako as she was certain that someone like Deku was an early riser. It was, however, time to return inside and begin the day so Ochako began to lightly shake Deku into he opened his eyes.
“Time to wake up silly,” chimed Ochako
“Oops I don't think I was supposed to fall asleep outside.” groaned Deku as he stood up stretching his arms and legs.
“That makes two of us then. Well anyways,” Ochako yawned as she stood up. “I think we should start heading back now. Wanna walk with me?” Seeing Deku nod in response she started to walk back into the dorms, Deku following right behind her. The walk wasn't that far so the two made it back within a couple of minutes they didn't talk during the return trip because there wasn't much to be said. Entering the building where they lived, the two tired teens we greeted with the sight of pure commotion in the common room. Arguments aplenty, several high fives were given, and more than one person giving another money. Even Bakugo was getting in on it, deep in what appeared to be an argument with Kirishima. The commotion stopped on a dime when everyone noticed the Ochako and Deku had stepped into the room. Before either one of them could open their mouths, the gathering began to quickly disperse, with Mina giving Ochako a big wave and a smile, Bakugo glaring at Deku while sliding Kirishima a $20, who in return gave Izuku a smile before walking away. Both Izuku and Ochako stood in the common room for a solid minute in pure confusion before Izuku spoke up.
“Hey I'm still a bit tired so I'm going to go back to my room and get some more sleep, text me if you want to do something or just talk. I'll see ya later.” And so Izuku began to walk back to his room. While Ochako sat on a couch and began to watch Tv. Not long after a mischievous Mina, and Tsuyu approached the couch. Since friends joining each other to watch Tv didn't raise any immediate red flags Ochako just acknowledged their presence but didn't pay them much mind. Until Mina decided to speak up.
“Sooooooooooooo. Uraraka. Mind telling us about this”Mina pulled out her phone and opened up her gallery to show Uraraka a picture. The objects of the image were very familiar to her as they were her and her messy haired best friend, it was the two of them sleeping together outside just the night before. Upon realizing that someone had seen them Uraraka instinctively put both hands on her face and began to float to the ceiling, but was suddenly anchored back to the couch as Mina and Tsuyu were expecting this and weren't about to let her get away with this a second time.
“H h h How did you get this,” stammered Ochako trying her best to not die from the heat producing from her face.
“Its quite simple,” Tsuyu started to speak up. “I went outside for a morning stretch saw you to in this...intimate position took the picture and sent to it Mina. Who sent it to the rest of the class, after I told her not to. Narrowing her eyes at Mina who just shrugged and began to interrogate Ochako herself.
“Ok girlfriend spill it, are you two dating. Why were you two doing outside so late? How’d you two end up falling asleep on top of one another? Mina rapid fired at the completely embarrassed Ochako.
“We aren't dating,” Ochako said losing her embarrassed face replaced by one of sadness. “And the only reason we were even out there was that both of us couldn't sleep so we went out to get fresh air, then we started talking about the stars and suddenly we were asleep on top of either other,” she continued obviously holding the reason they ended up under the stars together. Mina began to open her mouth to try and pry out the actual reason but stopped when Tsuyu shot her a glance and spoke up herself.
“Uraraka do you like Midoryia in a romantic way?” Tsuyu asked knowing the answer but trying to get Ochako to admit it in the open.
“I think its more than that, I'm certain I'm in love with him, and I just want to be with him.” Admitted Ochako now burying her head into her legs
“Tell him, he loves you too its the most obvious thing in the world. You can't let the fear of him potentially saying no, which is not going to happen, by the way, cause you so much pain. Uraraka you are going to make your own choices but I don't want you to feel this way.” Tsuyu grabbing Ochako’s hands with Mina nodding her head while sporting a supporting smile. No one said a word for a bit until Ochako let out a loud sigh stood up losing the sad face gaining an aura of confidence if only a slight one.
“Yeah you guys are right, I'm just gonna through myself out there and hope for the best I've got a great idea for a date. And knowing Deku we will still be friends if he doesn't feel the same way. Catch ya later.” Ochako started her stroll down to Deku’s room, not seeing the high five that Mina and Tsuyu shared with each other. The walk down the hall was nerve-racking for Ochako the mental battle was a fierce one: one side of her telling her that Deku is just being friendly to her and that asking him out will push him away and she will lose him forever. The other side agreed with Mina and Tsuyu: Deku was obviously in love with her too, they always hang out together and he just exposed his insecurities while confirming you and let you struggle into him!! By the time she was at his door the war was over, she was committed and determined to pursue a date with Deku, so she knocks on his door and doesn't get a response. After 5 minutes of sitting outside of his door it clicked….he was napping. Smacking herself on the forehead she went to her room to do the same thing, the stress of waiting for Deku was already bad enough and having to wait an undetermined time to even just ask him. Changing into sweatpants and a baggy t-shirt Ochako rested her head and went to sleep.
Three hours later she woke up rolled over in her bed and checked her phone and saw that there was an unread message on it. Opening she smiled as she saw that it was from Deku about 10 minutes ago
Hey just woke up from my nap. What's up
Hi I just woke up from a nap too
Oh, how did you sleep
Fine, not as good as last night tho
Yeah same
Well anyways I have something to ask you can I can come over
Of course
Ok, see you soon ^~^
Taking a deep breath Ochako got up and walked to Deku’s room, where she was actually let in this time. Deku’s hair was messy and he had a t-shirt and pajama pants, this made Ochako smile as this showed her that he texted her soon after he woke up. Deku’s voice snapped her out of her thoughts.
“So what did you want to ask me?” Deku asked. Ochako took a deep breath and steadied herself, this was it it was all or nothing. So opened her mouth praying that her gamble will have paid off.
“There's this amusement park that's open nearby its even half off for students! So I was wondering if you would like to go with me. Like as a date.” Ochako closed her eyes waiting for Deku to respond to her. To which he did promptly.
“Heh, that is so like you, always taking charge. Yeah, of course, I’d love to go on a date with you. Honestly, I've been wanted to go on a date with you for a while, but I got into my own head. Just give me a minute to get changed,” replied Deku immediately relieving any tension Ochako had.
“Or we could just go in comfy clothes,” Ochako shrugged.
“Yeah that works too.” Leaving Deku’s room the two walked the short distance to a nearby bus stop got on the next one with the amusement park as a destination. To pass the time they talked about what they wanted to do once they arrived. A plan was quickly formed: they would try and ride as many rollercoasters as they could, get food and then go home. Simple, yes, but incredibly enjoyable. And so they arrived at their destination, the doors of the bus opened and out stepped Deku and Ochako ready to go on their first date. Walking to go pay for their tickets in Ochako got an idea but it required the other parties permission.
“Deku, you can say no to this if you want, but um….can we hold hands..” Deku didn't say anything but what he did do was take her hand into his and gave it a squeeze as they got into line, brandishing an infectious smile that made its way to Ochako’s face within seconds. It wasn't particularly busy meaning that the lines to get in went by pretty fast, Deku paid for the both of them even with Ochako’s adamant refusal. At one point Ochako was practically shoving her half of the cost into his face, she was promptly ignored as he leads the now pouting Ochako into the park.
The first ride that the couple was interested in was the roller coaster that the park is famous for, it had the most loops, went the fastest, and it even went backward! Naturally, this line was the longest, though it wasn't that bad as the wait time was only estimated for 30 minutes, so they got in line and did waiting, about 25 minutes in fact before Deku decided to poke fun at Ochako.
“You know if you get scared of the heights or the speed you can always hold onto me,” a very smug Deku informed Ochako.
“Pssh as if the master of the gravitation forces such as myself could feel the very thing I control,” pumping her fists Ochako countered. The thing was, she did have a slight fear of heights and the speed certainly didn't help it much. But like hell, if she was gonna let Deku successfully tease her like that. And so their time in line was up and it was time to get ready to ride, they took their seats buckled their seatbelts and waiting for the ride to begin. The wheels began to move, slowly but surely, the height slowly increasing and it got to be a little much for Ochako who grabbed Deku’s hand for support, receiving a squeeze of assurance in response. Reaching the apex the ride stopped for a moment then it exploded and suddenly came crashing down to earth. Deku raised his hands, including the one holding Ochako’s, and began to yell with excitement and joy. Ochako joined him losing any sense of fear or nervousness, in fact, neither of them would stop for the next 3 minutes as the ride went side to side, up and down, forward and backward. When the ride was finally over, the adrenaline coursing through the teen's bodies wasn't satisfied so they went on ride after ride takes hours off their day until the sun finally set. As they were getting ready to leave Ochako noticed something that could make this perfect day somehow that much better: a completely empty photo booth. Dragging a willing Deku by the hand into it she sat him on the bench in the booth and got ready to get their pictures taken. The first one was the most simple it was just sitting next to each other, grinning ear to ear. The next picture had Deku wrapping his arms around Ochako and she leaned her head onto his shoulder. After that one Ochako decided to get a little bold, right before the picture snapped she planted a kiss onto his cheeks. Getting ready for the last picture, the last thing Ochako expected to happen was: Deku cupping her chin and pulling her into a deeper, if not somewhat sloppy, first kiss. Ochako was already having the best day of her life, but somehow the dork that she loves went and made it that much better. With that, they were out of photos so they exited the booth and went to collect them. This machine was new so not only did it send out physical copies, it sent ones directly to their phones too! Not wasting any time Ochako set the picture of Deku and her in their first kiss as her phone screensaver as she never wanted to forget her first kiss, after finishing Deku extended his hand which was promptly taken by Ochako and they made their way to the bus back home. The last thing Ochako remembered was resting her head on Deku’s shoulder shortly after getting on the bus, as she fell asleep dreaming of the many more dates that she planned on going on with this absolute dork that had stolen her heart. She would wake up the next day in her bed, Deku carrying her after getting home, with a framed picture of them kissing next to her.
chapter 10: week 22
In the past two weeks, Uraraka had received an onslaught of text messages from her classmates. She wasn’t even sure that she had given her number to everybody in her class. And then some. People from other classes had begun messaging her as well, most of them were congratulatory messages, some asking her who knocked her up, and one in particular was an apologetic message (she let her silence speak for itself).
As predicted, Iida’s texts had been the worst:
Iida :
>> Uraraka, this is extremely irresponsible! You are too young to become a mother! I cannot believe you had coitus in the dorms where everybody else resides! That is completely unacceptable! This pregnan(1/4)
>>cy will cause you to be behind on your course work! I would be willing to extend my knowledge in order to help you under normal circumstances but now I do not know! This has caused me to feel very con(2/4)
>>flicted about our friendship! You have always been a bright girl and you can go far in life without contributing to the sins of underage sex! This is not normal behavior an upstanding young girl like (3 / 4)
>>yourself should be having! I am very disappointed! (4/4)
Uraraka had responded with a quick sorry, dad and then had dissolved into a fit of giggles. She couldn’t believe that Iida had actually scolded her like she was a child. As if the situation could warrant that. It only got worse once Iida had read the message, the bespectacled boy calling her and berating her (with the best intentions) over the phone this time. Uraraka told him that there was nothing that could be done now that it had already happened and he responded with saying that it’s rude to talk back. Sometimes she wondered if Iida took the joke of being the dad of the group too seriously.
The worst was Midoriya though, who seemed really offended and upset that she hadn’t told him. There was of course a reason as to why she hadn’t told him. She was kind of sure that he had a crush on her and she was impregnated by his childhood friend. If there was anybody that Midoriya wouldn’t want to have gotten Uraraka pregnant, it was Bakugou.
Deku :
>> why didnt u tell me?? I couldve helped u!!
Me :
<< i don’t want to be a burden to anybody :(
Deku :
>> ur never a burden.
Midoriya was too good for her. He deserved somebody who could give him the world and unfortunately Uraraka couldn’t be that person.
It was kind of a shot to the heart when Tsuyu had texted her a couple of hours later, asking why she had kept this from her. Uraraka had been lying under the covers, guilt rolling over her in waves from her conversation with Midoriya. This was multiplied tenfold when Tsuyu texted her since she considered Tsuyu to be one of her best friends, if not her best friend out of every one. She quickly explained to her that she didn’t want to be judged for anything she had done.
Tsuyu :
>>everybody makes mistakes, Ochako. We just have to live with them
Uraraka thought that Tsuyu was too kind and too wise to befriend the likes of her. Even after all that, Tsuyu reminded her that she was still more than welcome to come to Momo’s house for the last week of summer before their second term started. Uraraka had said she would think about it. And she thought about it, and thought about it, and thought about it. She spent hours lying on her back staring at the ceiling, contemplating the pros and cons of going to Momo’s house. On the one hand it would be just like old times when she was in the common room of the dorms, gossiping about their class and the other classes.
On the other hand, she would have to see her friends for the first time since it was rudely revealed that she was pregnant. The thought terrified her.
In the end, however, she chose to go over, missing the camaraderie. She hadn’t really left the house since the news had gotten out and with how suffocating she felt around Bakugou, she needed a change.
Which is how she found herself lounging in a pool chair beside Momo’s pool, belly out with no shame in the world. It was the first time she had let others aside from her doctor and Mitsuki see her stretch marks but she couldn’t find it in her to care. She was relaxing. No anxiety, no crying herself to sleep. Just. Relaxation. The girls were treating her a little different but that was the extent of it. They had never seen a pregnant person outside of TV before.
“You really are glowing.” Mina mused as she swam over to the side of the pool, draping her fuschia arms over the ledge and resting her head on them. Her hair was sticking to her face and her horns were even a little bit droopy. She was as smiley as ever though and Uraraka could see her idly kicking her legs behind her in the water, creating tiny waves.
“Ah, thank you!” Uraraka pat her belly, the baby squirming inside at the touch.
“Do you know what you’re having?” Hagakure swam up next to her, watermelon patterned bikini floating in mid air. Uraraka found herself wondering, not for the first time, what Hagakure really looked like but she knew there was no way to find that out.
“No, I’m keeping it a surprise.”
“Why don’t we stop hounding her with questions?” Jirou asked, lounging on the chair beside her, not looking up from her phone.
Mina pouted. “How are we supposed to be prepared for the future? Uraraka is our example!”
“She doesn’t want to be hounded with questions and nobody wants to hear them!”
“I really don’t mind answering…” Uraraka said quietly as Mina splashed water in Jirou’s direction.
“See, she doesn’t mind!”
“You’re such a-”
“Is something wrong?” Momo came out of her home wearing a red string bikini, boobs jiggling as she walked. Uraraka pondered whether or not she had worn it around Todoroki or for Todoroki. Though, she couldn’t imagine Momo and Todoroki getting down and dirty. The pair of them was just too awkward.
Nobody would probably expect it with her and Bakugou though so who was she to judge?
“What’s sex like?” Mina asked suddenly, turning her attention back to Uraraka and ignoring Jirou’s furious expression. Jirou was most likely uncomfortable considering she was asxual. Momo almost tripped as she yelped, catching herself before she could fall. Uraraka was a bit stunned by the bluntness of the question but quickly composed herself.
“Well,” she had to think about this for a moment. It wasn’t anything like the movies envision it. It’s not romantic or perfect. Dimming the lights doesn’t make anything sexier. Your bodies stick together from how sweaty you get and the sweat is kind of gross. Not kind of, it’s really gross. Nothing about sex is sexy. But Uraraka looked at the hope in Mina’s eyes and she just couldn’t tell her the truth, “it’s fun, I guess.”
Mina immediately whined and slammed her fists into the water. “This isn’t fair! Everybody always does things before me.”
“Nobody wants to have sex with you because you’re annoying.” Jirou mumbled and Mina stuck her tongue out at her.
“I think Sero would.” Hagakure said thoughtfully, bathing suit floating closer to Mina.
“Sero’s so… plain.” Mina sighed and sunk into the water, submerging herself. Hagakure laughed softly as Tsuyu swam up to the edge to join the conversation.
“Did the boy treat you right?”
Uraraka thought about how Bakugou was treating her now and how he treated her before this mess started. When they were together he was wonderful. He had his own special way of being sweet, which included a lot of swearing and playing with her hair. Bakugou had a thing for her hair, always smelling it and running his fingers through soft brown locks. It always lolled Uraraka right to sleep.
But now? He was awful. Uraraka decided not to think about that.
“He did.”
“Past tense?” Momo asked sadly. She had taken up the chair on Uraraka’s side, breasts looking even bigger pressed against her chest as she leaned back.
“It’s complicated.” Uraraka sighed and Mina finally reemerged, thankfully dropping the subject. Uraraka tried not to dwell on Bakugou too much during the majority of the week, still never giving away that he was the father. She never budged even when Mina had sidled up to her a couple of nights later after they were done watching a movie, begging to know who the father was. Uraraka hadn’t said a word, just kept insisting it was somebody from a different class.
“Is it Midoriya?” Tsuyu asked that same night, all of them forming a circle.
“What? No!” Uraraka laughed and shook her head. She thought that they may think that she was lying because her voice went up a bit. She saw Mina’s eyebrows raise and even Jirou looked skeptical.
“It’s not!” Uraraka narrowed her eyes at them. “I told you guys-”
“We know, a guy in a different class.” The rest of the girls mocked in unison.
“But you know,” Hagakure leaned forward, the pillow sitting in her lap bending in half. “if you could have sex with anybody in our class, who would it be?”
“Iida.” Uraraka responded because she knew it would get them off her case. Not to be rude, but nobody in this current point in time would want to fuck Iida. Most of the girls wrinkled their noses, Tsuyu looking indifferent as always.
Jirou stared at her. “Really? Iida ?”
“I bet he does his robot hands in bed.” Mina snorted, almost in disgust.
Hagakure gasped and flailed her arms, saying something in response but Uraraka tuned them out. She exhaled and leaned back against the couch, resting a hand over her stomach. She watched as most of the girls freaked out and stated who they would have sex with. None of them said Bakugou (unsurprisingly and thankfully). Uraraka was not shocked when Hagakure said Todoroki, because honestly, he was the prettiest boy in the class. Hopefully Hagakure didn’t catch the dirty look Momo had thrown her. Jirou had hesitantly admitted that she wouldn’t mind seeing what Kaminari was like in bed and Mina had said that he ‘probably goes stupid when he comes’. Which made everybody descend into giggles again.
Uraraka watched her friends laughing and wished she had as much fluidity as they did. For a little while they ran around and hit each other with pillows, mostly Mina and Hagakure chasing Momo and Jirou with a pillow before Tsuyu stole them away with her tongue. Uraraka wished she could run around with them and have a good time to her fullest extent but unfortunately that wasn’t an option. She pat her belly and silently said a prayer, hoping that everything would be fine in the coming weeks. She still couldn’t believe that she was pregnant and that her friends weren’t judging her or making her feel like she wasn’t welcome.
“Does being pregnant still make you sick?” Tsuyu asked out of nowhere and Uraraka yelped, jolting on the couch. She hadn’t seen or felt Tsuyu reclaim her spot on the couch beside her.
“Like… morning sickness?” Tsuyu nodded. “Oh. Not really. That’s passed. Mostly I’m just tired all the time. And hungry.”
“Ah. What does it feel like?” Tsuyu asked, eyes darting to Uraraka’s stomach.
Uraraka smiled softly. “It’s weird. The baby started moving about a week or two ago but you can’t really feel it from the outside yet.”
“Huh.” Tsuyu placed a finger to her lips. “It must be strange having a baby grow inside of you, kero .”
Uraraka laughed. “It really is! You wouldn’t believe how weird it is when they start to hiccup.” Tsuyu gave her own giggle as well as another kerobefore the other girls joined the discussion. Mina and Hagakure of course had more questions, personal questions about Uraraka’s body that she answered but felt a little uncomfortable with some of them. Uraraka wanted to be a good friend though so she endured it until they all fell asleep, Uraraka taking the couch with Tsuyu while the other four slept on the floor.
In the morning, their last morning of this mini vacation, Uraraka was one of the first ones awake and discovered that Momo was missing from the group of snoozing girls. Mina was all spread out and the impression where Hagakure was lying beside her was concentrated to the middle of the pillow and blanket. Tsuyu was curled into a ball beside Hagakure and Jirou had one arm thrown over her eyes as she laid on her back.
Uraraka sat up and rubbed at her eye, stretching her arms above her head before going to use the toilet. The one downside of being pregnant was having to use the bathroom all the time . That wasn’t an exaggeration either. She felt like she peed at least six times a day and she didn’t know what the normal amount should be. It was normal though, learning this after frantically researching because she thought something was wrong. As the baby grew it would press on her bladder and make her have to urinate frequently.
When she reemerged from the bathroom she heard banging in the kitchen and figured Momo was in there. Surely enough, Momo was making them breakfast, food already frying on pans.
“Do you want any help?” Uraraka offered. She noticed Momo jump and then look over her shoulder, offering a small smile.
“You don’t have to!”
Uraraka shrugged. “No, it’s okay, I don’t mind.”
Momo bit her lip and then nodded, moving over to allow Uraraka room to take over the dishwashing. She refocused on cooking and the two were silent as they took to their tasks, Uraraka shaking the dishes before laying them on the drying rack.
Uraraka glanced over and turned back to the dishes. “Hey, Momo?”
Momo made a humming noise of affirmation but didn’t say anything.
“I’m really sorry I threatened to tell people about, ya know…” Uraraka waved her hands in order to not have to reveal her relationship with Todoroki out loud in case one of the other girls woke up. “And I’m really grateful that you made that pregnancy test for me. And allowed me to stay here even after all of this.”
There was silence from Momo’s area and then a heavy sigh. Uraraka could hear the smile in her voice as she spoke: “It’s okay. I really appreciate the apology, Uraraka. Shouto and I… want to keep everything a secret from now because it’s just easier this way.”
“I understand!” Uraraka said and then pointed to her bump. “Oh, I definitely understand.”
Momo laughed and pressed a hand to her lips to hide it, shaking her head. Uraraka wondered how every single strand of jet black hair remained in place. Did everything about her have to be so perfect?
“We should wake up the other girls.” Momo finally said when she stopped laughing and Uraraka agreed, offering to go wake them up so Momo could keep cooking. As Uraraka descended down the stairs she was grateful that another chip was off her shoulder and that there wouldn’t be this awkward air around the two of them anymore.
Now all Uraraka had to do was tell them she wasn’t coming back to school. And who the father was. But that was for her return to school, another couple weeks away. Right now, she wanted to spend as much time as she could with her friends before things got hectic. She deserved at least that much right?
Collapsing Memories and Birthday Wishes
Chapter 1 - Cats and Collapses Part 2
Locating the building had been effortless; missing the collapsing apartment complex seemed impossible, the roof caving in and the walls crumbling apart. From the sky, one could view people darting about, some helping the injured, others running away or standing idly by, as well as a full news cast reporting in on the incident. An ambulance was posted, waiting for heroes to rescue those in need of the most medical attention from the quickly deteriorating building.
Upon arriving at the scene, Izuku and Ochako had been immediately bombarded by the reporters, a woman shoving a microphone into their faces the moment their feet hit the ground. The two were surprised by the news anchor’s lack of awareness for the situation; there was no time for the interruption. Facing the cameraman, the brown-haired woman began to speak, “Here we have the popular U.A. students Deku and Uravity! Tell us, what do you think is happening here on Warkla Road, which is typically a calm street?” But by the time she had started her short introduction, the two heroes had looked at each other, nodded, and bolted towards the other forces nearby. Whipping around, the reporter found that she had been talking to empty space. Sighing, she told the cameraman to keep rolling on the action.
Sprinting up to a cluster of people, Ochako and Izuku did their best to find a person who could educate them of the situation before the two rushed inside head-first. Locating one of the apartment complex’s staff members, the two interrogated him on what had happened. “Everything seemed fine, but then there was a sudden explosion. It wasn’t massive, but it still sent people running outside. And good thing they did, because after that, there was a second explosion, much stronger. It took out most of the east side of the building. Even though some people were able to get out, there are still a lot inside. We have a resident list,” He held up a clipboard with names on it, “And have been checking off all of the people that have been reported safe. But we’ve only found 42 of the 75 people currently living there, and since then there’s been another explosion,” He was clearly nervous, his voice shaky, but his information was useful, even if it was slightly vague. “I hope this helps.”
“Thank you so much,” Izuku had said, his gratitude heartfelt. The worker nodded, and walked away from the shorter boy and his girlfriend, resuming his task of checking the list of apartment patrons. Turning to Ochako, the two quickly discussed their next plan of action, “So we know that there are still several citizens trapped inside, and that the villains are still making frequent attacks, so we have to be careful.” The brunette watched (normally it would be with bemusement, but the circumstances were too serious), recognizing the look on Izuku’s face and his body posture. With a hand on his chin, eyes cast downward at nothing in particular, the gears in his head were turning. Swiftly, a plan was formed. “So this may have to be a mix between a rescue and attack operation. You’ll float the rubble that’s too big, and I’ll help lift things that I can, carry the people, and fight if needed,” He hastily looked at her, a red tinting his cheekbones as he caught his small mistake, “And you’ll of course help fight, too.”
Nodding, and wearing a knowing smile, Ochako affirmed his idea, “Sounds solid to me. Alright, ready to go?” After hum of approval from the hero beside her, the two dashed off, entering the failing building ahead of them.
It was dark, and dust billowed around them, thick in the air. Stepping cautiously through the ground level and crouching around hunks of cement and crushed wall, the two commenced the search for trapped civilians. Five minutes into their frantic look-about, they had still yet to find a single person. Just as Ochako had begun to groan in frustration, there was sudden thudding, each noise coming shorty after the other in a rapid succession. Afraid that it was the continuing explosions that the worker outside had warned of, both Izuku and Ochako dropped to the floor and rolled into some form of cover, holding their hands above their heads as trained to do so.
In an instant, the thundering clamor came to an abrupt halt and a voice replaced it, “Ah! Deku and Uravity!” A moment of pause passed and the mentioned students looked to the voice in shock, “What… What are you doing?” It was Deatharms, carrying two unconscious people to help from the second level. Relief flooded through Izuku’s body, now aware that the commotion had just been the large hero’s footfalls, and he shot up, coming to a stiff form of attention. “You’re just as crazy as always,” He gave a disheartened chuckle and moved closer to the exit, “There are people upstairs still that you can help,”
Once the pro’s tip reached the ears of Izuku and Ochako, they both made a mad sprint for the battered and torn staircase, the former bounding up the stairs four at a time when applying his quirk. Zipping about the second floor, avoiding the obstructions of rubble they both frenziedly combing through the area. Within 2 minutes there were already three people hoisted up onto Izuku’s back and he began sauntering outside and towards the paramedics as Ochako located and gathered more of the injured.
An hour passed, all but one of the 11 floors swept through, and dozens of people had been rescued by Izuku and Ochako, along with other heroes. Odd was it that there had been no sightings of the villains, nor a fourth explosion. Carrying a couple of people, Ochako on his tail as she supported another and floated a young boy, Izuku made his way to the ambulance.
“There’s more?” The female EMT stationed outside sighed, exasperated as she looked at the oncoming cluster of people. Her coworker inside was trying his best to fit several people inside of the vehicle. This would be the fourth ambulance to be sent off. “Are there any severe injuries?” The woman hollered at Izuku and Ochako before he reached where she was.
“Not that we can tell!” The pink-costumed hero shouted back, subconsciously examining the back of her boyfriend up ahead. Reaching the ambulance, the male medical technician eased the unconscious citizens off of Izuku and propped them up somewhere in the packed automobile. “Here,” The worker on the ground said, taking the older woman that Ochako had been supporting. A murmured thank you was heard from the injured lady.
Izuku walked up to where Ochako and the boy she was still floating were, and got himself ready to catch said child. Tapping her fingers together, the boy’s gravity was reverted back to normal and was soon nestled comfortably in strong arms. After lifting the red-haired boy into the ambulance, Izuku and Ochako bumped shoulders and began the short sprint to the building, entering once again.
Checking off the newly acquired rescued, the nurse smiled down at her clipboard, pleased to see that the day’s work was almost done — all of the apartment goers had been accounted for. Zipping back around, she began to congratulate the two young heroes that had been with her, “That’s everyone! No need to go back into the bu-“ Her mouth dropped open and worry flooded up from the pit of her stomach.
Looking onward at the apartment complex, she contemplated going inside to get them herself, but rationed that there were patients who needed her. (She was correct in that fact.) Deciding to instead notify another hero near her, she approached Deatharms, who had been at the site since the beginning of the explosion. “Excuse me,” She began, effectively gaining his attention, “All of the citizens have been rescued, but-“
“That’s great! How’s everybody holding up?” The burly man interrupted, excited to hear that his and the other heroes’ work had paid off. Smiling, he had no idea that there were still two heroes inside, searching for people they wouldn’t find.
“Actually, sir, Deku and Urav-” She didn’t get to complete the student’s hero names, which she had caught earlier in the day. For, to the horror of everyone in the vicinity, the ground began to tremble, the building shaking with a great force. In a burst of light, and a reverberation of ear-shattering clatter, the building shattered before their eyes. The villains had struck again, with two unsuspecting heroes trapped within it’s now destroyed walls.
They were on the eleventh floor, lifting up chunks of rubble and rock, searching for citizens, but to no avail. Worried that they wouldn’t be able to find those still trapped before it was too late. Growing ever more concerned, their faces were grim as they continued to look in vain.
It started with a cough, and then she rubbed her eyes. Ochako looked around, confused by the sudden onslaught of dust billowing around the destructed rooms. Sparing a glance to the ceiling, she realized that it was flowing down from there. Confused, she made her way around the apartment level, probing throughout each room for her boyfriend. “Where could he…,” A great rumbling overtook the building, and Ochako’s knees felt weak against the motion — realization struck her like a train.
The clanging and shifting of the building all around, Ochako took a sprint towards the level’s lobby, frantically searching for Izuku. “No, no, no, no, no…” Tears streaming down her face, partially from the sawdust floating about (heavier in the air than ever) and mostly from panic, she saw him crouched over, looking for citizens closer to the ground. “DEKU!” She screeched. He turned to her, eyes wide with surprise. “GET DOWN!”
There was a moment where time seemed to slow down. The situation dawned on Izuku just as Ochako tackled him to the ground, her body toppling his. All at once, the brief time of pause came to an abrupt stop.
Pain was the only feeling, enveloping the two and causing Ochako to cry out. A stone struck Izuku’s head, and everything suddenly fell into a haze. Above him, he saw the ceiling falling on them, as if the sky were collapsing. Clenching his teeth, he punched away some of the rubble falling closer and closer to them, then fell unconscious, floating in an ocean of tormented aching. They were already entrapped deep within a pile of rubble with no way out.
Notes: This is kinda short, but I felt it was the best place to end off at ^^;. I don’t have much to say at the moment, ‘cept that there will be a new part coming out as soon as possible! As always, thank you for reading, have an excellent day, and eat and drink plenty! Love you all. <3
Heist
Villain AU. Midoriya, Uraraka, and Bakugo pull a heist.
[OT3, Crime AU, Established relationship, Quirkless Deku, Humor]
[Bakugo/Uraraka/Midoriya]
"Th-this is a stick-up!" Deku yelled as he entered the store and pointed a gun at the people inside. There was a moment of silence and calm as the patrons turned toward him and debated the seriousness of this threat. Guns were not a common occurrence. Villains usually introduced themselves with their quirk or some form of property damage. They were intimidating, often with mutant-type quirks or something easily mistakable for one. They were not usually normal-looking gun wielders in strange green costumes and they certainly didn't stutter.
"Idiot," a blonde yelled as he entered behind Deku. "Don't fucking stutter."
"Oh. S-sorry, King!" he apologized.
"Such a fucking Deku," the blonde berated.
"Hey!" The scolding voice of a female precluded her appearance. "Don't talk to him that way!"
"Whatever," the blonde replied. He held out his arm, which was surrounded by what looked like a large grenade, and created an explosion in his fist. "This is a fucking stick-up!"
That got people's attention. Immediately the room broke out into screams and panicked muttering.
'King,' as he'd been called, was having none of it. "Shut up!"
An immediate silence fell upon the room and all eyes went to the three at the door.
"Wow, they really listened to you," Deku whispered in awe.
"Of course they did," The Blonde scoffed. Turning his gaze away from his partner, he addressed the crowd. "Now listen up! I'm the King of Explosions and if any of you make one move that I don't like, you're dead." He looked over the crowd, making eye contact and glaring at several people. "Good. That's what I thought."
"He's really good at this," The girl whispered to Deku.
Deku only nodded in reply.
"Now then, this Deku is gonna take your money." King gestured to him. "He'll feel really bad if he has to shoot you, so don't make him do that." He gestured to his female partner next. "This Angel is gonna help him."
With that cue, both of them moved forward, Deku pointing a gun at the closest person while Angel held open a bag.
"P-please give me all of your valuables," Deku said.
"Don't hold anything back, okay?" Angel smiled. Her expression would have been disarming if not for the intimidating man at her back and gun wielder at her side. Nonetheless, the person fumbled to grab their wallet and toss their valuables into the bag.
"Th-thank you very much!" Deku exclaimed.
Angel reached out to touch the man, sending him floating up to the ceiling and causing another uproar in the crowd. "Sit tight, okay?" Her chipper tone caused a dissonance with the crowd, throwing many of them off balance and startling them into compliance. The two quickly made their way through the room.
King threw a sack towards the cashier. "You too, fuckface. Money in the bag, now!" He said, emphasizing his point with another explosion.
One person tried to break from the crowd and rush Deku, but Angel stepped forward, snatching the person by the arm and slamming him to the ground. She turned him over and wrenched both arms back and jammed her foot into the middle of their back. "Don't you dare try to hurt Deku!" she said fiercely. "Apologize." She pulled both arms further back. "Now."
"I'm sorry! I'm sorry!"
She slammed his head into the ground hard enough to knock him out. She turned a brutal glare to the rest of the room. "No one else better try anything stupid."
"S-sorry for causing you trouble," Deku murmured.
She smiled brightly at him. "Oh, don't worry about it, Deku. It's not your fault." She took everything out of her captive's pockets before sending him to the ceiling.
"Time's running down. Let's get out of here," King called out to the pair. He snatched the bag from the cashier and returned to his position at the door.
Angel was the first one out and King stood in the doorway with his back to the room and his eyes on Deku as he held open the door. It was therefore Deku who saw the next person move to attack the criminals. He turned his fingers into blades and quickly extended them toward King.
Deku didn't think, he fired.
The room exploded into panic at the sound. King spun around in time to see the man grasp at his arm, blood seeping through his shirt. King growled. "Why you--!"
"King!" Deku said loudly. "Angel is waiting for us."
King growled again. "You're fucking lucky," he spat at the man. He reached out to grab Deku's arm and pulled him out of the door. Angel touched them both immediately, making all three of them float.
"What took you?" She asked before she curled into a ball and pressed a hand over her mouth. Deku pulled her closer, cradling her in his arms.
"Close your eyes," he told her. "I'll tell you when to drop us."
She nodded, closing her eyes and curling further in on herself, holding their bags of valuables close to her chest. King braced himself against her back, letting Deku wrap an arm around his waist, before using his explosions to propel them forward.
"Drop us now, Angel," Deku whispered.
She pressed her fingers together to release them and they landed on the roof, King catching her in his arms. "You good?" he asked.
"I'll make it," she told him. "We've been practicing, remember?"
He grunted in reply. "Deku, take her."
Deku nodded, kneeling down to accept her onto his back. They had practiced this. King could use his explosions to navigate the rooftops on his own, but Deku would need Angel's help to make the longer jumps. "Should we split up?" Deku asked.
"No. I wanna keep and eye on you nerds," King replied.
"That's sweet of you," She said.
"Shut up, Angel."
It was an hour after they arrived back at their home and changed into normal clothes that they were ready to look through their loot. Ochako was leaning over the back of the couch that both Izuku and Katsuki were sitting on.
"So, what did we get?" Ochako asked. "This is really exciting!"
"It'll take a while to count all the money," Katsuki answered.
"That's not what I mean. Money is boring," she groaned.
"Boring?" Izuku repeated. The idea that they went through all this effort; practicing, planning, choosing code names, and she now called it boring, nearly blew his mind.
"Don't get me wrong!" she exclaimed quickly, waving her hands wildly. "I'm really glad that we got the money and it will totally come in handy, but I wanna know what else we got."
Katsuki looked at her with an unimpressed expression.
"I'll look through this bag, Kaachan," Deku smiled. "You can start counting from the other bag."
Katsuki growled. "Fine."
Izuku reached into the bag. "Let's see...we've got a really expensive watch, silver bracelets," he listed off the items one by one as he lined them up on the table. Ochako made comments on each item as it was laid out, pointing out those she liked, those that might make a good gift for her parents, etc. By the time they were done, half the table was packed with items.
"Satisfied, Angel?" Katsuki asked.
Ochako leapt over the back of the couch, briefly floating herself and letting her body drop across both their laps. "Yes," she sighed in contentment.
"Good," he leaned down to press a kiss to her forehead.
"So, can we use some of this to go on a date?" Izuku questioned. "We haven't been out in a while."
"Hmm...I think we can spare a little for ourselves," she said. "But at least half of this has to go to my parents."
"Of course," Izuku agreed.
"And next time Deku, don't fuckin' stutter!" Katsuki yelled.
"You were the one that almost got stabbed, Kaachan!"
"Wait! You almost got what?" Ochako gasped.
Katsuki groaned. "Did you have to tell her?"
She sat up. "Alright, to the bedroom right now. I need to check you both over for injuries."
"We're fine, Occhan! Neither of us are injured," Izuku told her.
"Nope, I won't believe it until I see it with my own eyes." She stood up and stared them both down.
"Fine," Katsuki snapped. "Stupid Deku is first."
"Wha?" Izuku exclaimed.
Ochako pinched Katsuki's arm. "I told you not to say stuff like that!"
"Fuck! Fine! I'm sorry."
"That's better," she smiled. "Now come on, Deku."
Katsuki tugged him to his feet. "Don't keep her waiting," he commanded, swinging Izuku up into his arms.
"You guys!" Izuku objected.
"No objections," Ochako said. "I won't feel better until I check you both out with my own hands."
He blushed.
Katsuki quickly kissed his forehead. "Don't flush so easily, idiot."
"Katsuki, what did I tell you?" Ochako yelled.
"Yeah, yeah."
🐾Won’t Leave You: Chapter 11 (Moral Support (Well Sort of))🐾
His room was still dark as the curtains were drawn so Izuku had to blink a few times to get used to the dimness after waking up to the sun’s early brightness. The hand that had yanked him into the room had released him so he took a moment to rub his eyes and clear his head. When he removed his fists from his eyes he gasped and stumbled backward as seven pairs of eyes stared back at him, filled with curiosity.
“How did you guys get in here!?” Izuku gasped in surprise.
“You left your key on the floor, you damn idiot,” Bakugo said without hesitation as he examined his fingernails with apparent disinterest.
“W-what are you guys d-doing h-here?” Izuku tried and failed to avoid stuttering as all seven of the boys in his room turned to him and smirked.
“Isn’t it obvious?” Iida said darkly from the corner of the room.
“Obvious?”
“Man you really are so stupid,” Bakugo muttered.
Izuku crossed his arms and frowned, gazing at the group of boys assembled there. For some reason, Todoroki, Iida, Bakugo, Kaminari, Sero, Kirishima, and even Tokoyami were standing in Izuku’s room, staring at him. He had a sneaking suspicion as to why.
“Well, it isn’t really normal for a group of guys to sneak into someone’s room and call the owner of the room names.” Izuku retorted to Bakugo’s tone, starting to feel defensive.
Bakugo snorted and finally looked into Izuku’s eyes before quickly going back to pick at his nails.
“Well it isn’t normal for a good friend, who you thought you knew well, to sneak off after a distressing event and sleep with the girl who went through the said distressing event,” Iida yelled at Izuku, standing up suddenly, his face lit up with anger.
Izuku’s jaw dropped almost comically as he took in his friend, who was nearly shaking in his anger. Izuku put his hands up and shook his head violently.
“Whoa whoa whoa! You guys are taking a pretty big jump to conclusions, that is NOT what happened last night!”
“Really? Then explain Midoriya, what did happen? Why were you on the couch, cuddling up next to her this morning!” Iida said, his eyes glittering. Izuku had never seen Iida this angry. He decided rather quickly that he hated every second of it.
“Yeah Midoriya, tell us what happened!” Kaminari piped up from the corner of the room, a genuine smile lighting up his face. “I honestly didn’t think you had it in you, I’m curious.” Kaminari laughed as he was pummeled with half-hearted punches and angry glares. Izuku blushed so hard he thought his face was on fire.
“Iida I promise nothing happened! Uraraka was sick and scared so when I found her throwing up in the bathroom last night, I tried to make her feel better by covering her with some blankets from my room. When I tried to leave, she asked if I would hold her while she slept so that she wouldn’t feel so scared. I would never do anything violating to Uraraka. Ever.” Izuku said, putting every ounce of truth he had into that statement.
The two boys stared at each other for a few moments before Iida finally relaxed.
“Oh thank god! I hated putting up that angry facade, but I needed you to see how serious the consequences of your actions would have been if something like this had actually happened.” Iida said, sitting down and wiping his brow with a sleeve.
Izuku blinked a few times, his face a picture of his dumbfounded confusion.
“What?”
“I didn’t think that you actually did anything to Uraraka,” Iida said. “But I found you asleep together on the couch this morning and I worried about what might have happened. I am sorry for jumping to such drastic conclusions.” The whole room seemed to relax as Izuku’s face broke into a smile, the words finally starting to sink in.
“I’m sorry for scaring you guys, I promise it was nothing.” Izuku blushed but felt his shoulders relax and his face fall into a more natural expression.
“Still,” Sero said with a smirk. “You got to sleep next to a girl, how did that feel?”
“Oh, I don’t want to-”
“Oh come on, you have to!” Izuku was cut off as Kaminari piped up again.
“Yeah Midoriya, live a little! What was it like?” Kirishima asked.
“We shouldn’t press an investigation, you guys,” Iida said. Izuku shot him a grateful look but unfortunately, even Todoroki cut him off.
“Nothing crazy Midoriya but I would be lying if I said I wasn’t curious.”
“But you have a girlfriend! Wouldn’t you know what this is like already? Kaminari, you also have a girlfriend, Jirou, and Kirishima you are with Kacchan! What is all the hype for?”
“It is true that I have Momo,” Todoroki began. “But this was your first time being this close to a girl, we want to know how you felt.” Izuku scratched the back of his head nervously and blushed beet red again.
“This is the closest you have ever been with Uraraka, isn’t it?” Kaminari asked. Silence answered him.
“My money is actually on that this is not the first time he has been close to Uraraka,” Sero said with an even wider smirk.
“Nothing crazy!” Izuku nearly yelled in his embarrassment. “But… we have… kissed before.” He said, rubbing the toe of his shoe into his carpet.
“WHAT!? Really?” Four of the boys yelled in excitement and surprise. Even Todoroki and Tokoyami looked at him in surprise. Bakugo was the only one of the group who did not react other than a shocked glance in Izuku’s direction.
“That wasn’t crazy either, it was just a quick kiss that I gave her in the hospital.” Izuku paused and gave a shuddering breath as the memory repeated in his mind. “When I thought I was going to lose her.” Izuku glanced up at his friends. All of the smiles were gone now, sympathy and sadness glittering in their eyes.
“You guys wanted to know how it felt to be by Ochako’s side last night?” Izuku asked, reverting to her first name. “It felt safe and calming. I was so panicked by that villain attack, by the near loss of this special person in my life that I, yes care very deeply for, and the fact that I almost couldn’t save her. Both of us needed last night, to remember and to forget.” Izuku said, still staring at the floor. Silence met his confession, but after a few moments Kaminari spoke up again.
“Midoriya when we ask you how it felt to sleep next to a girl we don’t mean for you to give us your life issues.” The lightning hero joked. The atmosphere fell into one of relaxed happiness again but a silent weight hung over the boys as they continued to ask Izuku questions and play games amongst themselves. Izuku was finally able to excuse himself when he got a text from his mother and was able to convince his friends to leave so that he could call her. Once they were gone Izuku slumped against the door with a heavy sigh.
“What a day…”
Meanwhile on a different floor…
“Uraraka I swear! Spill the beans! Who knew you were so damn stubborn?” Mina danced around a flustered Ochako, her arms waving around in excitement. Ochako covered her face in embarrassment, her pinkies raised to keep herself from floating to the ceiling.
“We don’t want to force her into anything,” Tsuyu said from beside Ochako, placing a comforting hand on Ochako’s shoulder.
“Yes, we do! She has to tell us everything! She slept with a boy!” Mina squealed.
“No, no, no, I did not, we slept on the couch together but nothing happened!” Ochako’s face was an even brighter red now, the color reaching her ears and spreading down her neck.
“Well we wouldn’t know, would we? Details!” Mina said spinning in place almost like an excited puppy.
“I don’t want to make you too embarrassed, Uraraka but even I have to admit that I am curious to hear how this happened in the first place,” Momo said from the back of the room.
Ochako peered between her fingers at her classmates, her eyes meeting each of their hopeful faces as she scanned the room. Finally, she loosed a breath and lowered her hands until they fell to her sides.
“Alright, I will explain.”
Mina looked like she was about to have a heart attack in her excitement and even the other girls smiled and glanced at each other.
“It is not that interesting, nothing happened between us as I stated earlier, but I could not sleep. I came down to the kitchen last night for a snack and some water but just ended up getting sick. I was in the bathroom throwing up when Deku showed up. He was really nice, he just talked to me and held my hair back. When I was finished, he picked me up and brought me to the couch to sleep. He was such a comforting presence that I felt cold loneliness when he tried to leave. I asked him to stay and what you saw this morning was the result,” Ochako said, still not looking her friends in the eyes.
Mina really did squeal this time, her eyes wide and her hands were balled into fists that were placed beneath her chin. Ochako felt the flames in her cheeks flare up again and she had to really fight the urge to cover her face again.
“That’s so adorable!”
“I have to admit that is rather sweet.” Momo pointed out.
“I am just glad that you were able to get some sleep last night, Ochako,” Tsuyu said with a small nod. “We were all really worried about you.”
The other girls nodded in agreement, Mina still gushing and prancing around Ochako’s bedroom. Suddenly, Ochako’s phone buzzed. Ochako went to pick it up when Mina snatched it away from her.
“OOOOH!!! It’s Midoriya!”
Ochako’s heart beat a fraction faster than normal.
“He says he wants to meet with you, Uraraka!”
“Didn’t anyone ever tell you that it is rude to read someone else’s text messages?” Momo asked with an annoyed glare, grabbing the phone from Mina and handing it back to Ochako. “But if he does want to meet with you, I guess we should give you two some space,” The creation hero turned and nodded to her fellow female classmates and made her way to the door. The rest of the girls followed her out, Mina and Toru giving her a thumbs up on their way out. Ochako shut the door behind them and slid down to the floor. She felt as if she had just been forced to run a mile. “What a day…”
______________________________________________
Izuku paced back and forth in his room, waiting for Ochako to knock on his door. He had spoken to his mother on the phone and had decided to ask Ochako for a small favor. His hands felt sweaty and his breathing was rough and quick but he really didn’t know why. He ran a hand through his hair, trying to calm his nerves, why was he so nervous? He jumped as a soft knock sounded from his door. Izuku took a deep breath and strode to the door, forcing his hands to keep from shaking. He opened the door and immediately felt his nerves melt away into nothing. Ochako smiled sheepishly at him from her place in his doorway, her eyes gleaming with shy happiness.
“Ochako!”
Ochako looked up at Izuku in surprise, he had been using her first name more and more lately but it was still new to her.
“Hello, Deku! What did you want to talk to me about?”
Izuku stepped back so as to allow her to step into his bedroom and shut the door behind her. She walked up to the sliding doors, which were open, and stopped at the railing of his balcony, watching the bustle of the city in the distance. Izuku watched her for a little bit before walking up beside her, resting his elbows on the railing and following her gaze to the city.
“Thank you for last night.”
Izuku looked at Ochako, his eyes mirroring his surprise. She continued facing the city, swallowing slowly.
“Are you sure you are okay with what happened?” Izuku said, “I know nothing serious happened but I want to make sure that I did not make you feel uncomfortable last night,” He scratched the back of his head and looked down at his shoes. He looked up when he felt a soft, warm hand on his arm, a feeling that sent little sparks through his veins and electrified his bones.
“Last night was the most comfortable I’ve felt in a long time, Izuku,” Her eyes sparkled with the tears that were threatening to spill over onto her cheeks. “Thank you for everything.”
Izuku smiled, feeling his own tears getting ready to fall. He placed one of his scarred hands on top of the hand she had on his arm, releasing a slow breath into the warm morning air.
“Thank you, Ochako, for last night as well.”
She nodded at him and the two teens faced the city again, still holding hands.
“Is that all you wanted to talk to me about?”
“Oh!” Izuku brightened and faced Ochako again. “I can’t believe I forgot! My mom called and told me that she was going on a little trip with a few of her friends this weekend and asked me to come home to house sit while she is gone. I asked her if I could have a friend over and she said yes, so if you are comfortable with it, would you like to stay with me this weekend?” The sweat had started to build up again and it took almost all of his energy to keep his voice from shaking as he suddenly realized what he was asking. He tried to convince himself that it was just like any other normal sleepover with friends but in his heart, he knew that there was a significant difference this time. Ochako opened her mouth in slight amazement before breaking into a smile.
“That sounds like so much fun! Of course, I’d love to stay with you this weekend! Let me text my parents but it should be okay.”
Izuku felt all of his muscles relax and he loosed a breath that he didn’t even know he had been holding. He smiled at her.
“Perfect! Just let me know what they say.”
“Of course!”
Hearts vs. Heroics or: How Uravity Surpassed the World’s Greatest Hero (IzuOcha) (Epilogue)
Previous parts: Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3, Chapter 4, Chapter 5, Chapter 6, Chapter 7 Her desperately gasping lungs and the heat pooling at her forehead could do little to quell the fire roaring deep in her belly.
Ochako's gaze was fixed on her two feet in front of her, continually pushing against the leg press, straining to lift all the weight loaded onto the device. She had to push her left leg a little harder than her right, the muscles there unbalanced by weeks of limited use. But she kept lifting her legs upwards, heedless of the straining protest of her limbs.
"Eleven…" she muttered under her breath, her legs practically screaming at this point, as she let them fly back down along the machine. She grit her teeth and lifted once more, faltering once but managing to complete the last repetition. "Twelve."
She did her best to gently disengage her legs from the machine, pushing them off and working to catch her breath. She tried to press down on her left foot, but the leg shook under even a minimal amount of pressure. She frowned, knowing she would have to call it in for that day, unable to do her usual fourth set.
Ochako sighed, letting her vision move up to the bright lights on the ceiling of the U.A. training gym. They were a familiar comfort as she worked to get a hold of her breathing. The low thrum of the air conditioning and the distant sounds of metal clangs were peaceful to her now, in their own way.
A buzz sounded from her nearby phone, disrupting the tranquillity of the moment. Ochako scrunched her forehead and instinctively reached out for it, glad she had the forethought to keep it next to her this time. With a few tired swipes of her thumbs, she read the message she had been expecting — and dreading.
"We're ready here. You coming? :D"
Mina's text was less bothersome than usual but still caused Ochako to take a bracing breath. She still wondered how Mina had gotten her to agree with this. Shaking her head, she tapped her fingers quickly on her phone screen to reply.
"Be there in a half hour."
Her workout was cut short with Deku being busy with some kind of super-secret training with All Might. Without her familiar sparring buddy, Ochako resigned herself to hitting the showers early and walking into her scheduled torment.
But she would need her legs for that, which were still a little shaky. She grabbed a water bottle near her and took a healthy chug, letting the water's coolness course through her system.
This was her breaking point.
Ochako collapsed onto the crumbling tile of the arena, legs giving out, quirk no longer able to lift her. She puked, spilling her guts out, unable to rein in the reflex. This position was all too familiar, and she pounded her fist into the ground at that fact. She tried desperately to find another second wind, using her arms to lift her up. Deku, her parents and all her friends were out there rooting for her. She had to find a way to keep fighting. "You're done." She looked up to see Bakugo there, staring coldly down at her. Other than a large mark on his cheek from where she had successfully landed a fist — but had been blown away the instant before she could have tapped him with her thumb and sent him flying — he looked little worse for wear. Ochako desperately wanted to prove him wrong. To stand up and kick his butt out of the ring. But her legs refused to budge. Her stomach churned and tugged in a way that told her she would be heaving out the remnants of her stomach if she tried to use her Quirk again. It was frustrating. She knew — or at least told herself she did — that she could win if she was closer to 100 percent. But her fight with Deku had taken too much out of her. She was not as agile as she needed to be to keep out of reach of Bakugo's explosions. "You never stood a chance," Bakugo stated, nothing but disdain in his voice. "It would have been better if you lost last round." It made her blood boil. She shook as she sent a defiant glare his way. As unconsciousness started to creep across her mind, she managed one last sentence. "I will...surpass you."
Ochako's eyes flew open as the aggravating scene played in her mind once again. It had haunted her dreams, both day and night, for weeks. Every bedridden moment had thus infuriated her, eager as she was to throw herself back into training to start making up for that humiliating defeat.
Unfortunately, her injuries forced her to pace herself. She stood up, grimacing at the pain that shot through her legs. But they managed to hold her weight. Her arms dangled loosely at her sides, worn from an early section of her workout. With little energy to go on, Ochako shambled over to the facility's locker rooms.
As she walked through the quiet facility, Ochako found her mind turning once more to the Summer Sports Festival and her failure to reach the top. Todoroki had gone on to defeat Bakugo in the finals, but that had done little to assuage her grief when she heard about it afterwards.
Despite the pain and the tears shed over the loss, Ochako chose to use it as motivation. She redoubled herself into her hero training, working her arms with dumbbells Deku had snuck in for her while she was bedridden. As soon as she could walk steadily again, she had gotten back into the swing of hero classes and working out at the gym.
It had taken a lot of time to work down that frustration. Her victory over Deku had still gotten her a fair bit of notoriety. But she wanted to prove she could do more. To open up even more doors. She used her defeat as fuel to rededicate herself to training.
Deku was much the same, and was often enough lifting weights right alongside her. Fortunately, the romantic edge to their relationship had only made training slightly more awkward. Sparring had even gone smoothly, once the opening jitters were out of the way. Her heart panged a little at missing him today — both for training and beyond. But she was somewhat reassured by the meeting she would have with him tomorrow.
There was not a lot of certainty to her life these days beyond her drive to train and get better. She was happy — ecstatic, even — to be with Deku. But he was a big part of that uncertainty, the two of them struggling to navigate the first steps of their new relationship together. Nevertheless, she found herself regularly seeking his company.
Ochako closed her eyes for a moment as she stood on the threshold to the locker rooms. The dull throbbing of her muscles cried out for the relief of a hot shower and a soft bed. It hurt, but it was a good, satisfying kind of hurt.
As she had learned, love had not quelled her thirst for self-improvement.
That was perhaps one fear she need not worry about. But there were new terrors that had taken its place.
After a shower and a quick change of clothes, Ochako walked slowly back towards the U.A. dorms. She was in no particular rush. She stretched the distance, taking time to appreciate the pleasant warmth of the midsummer evening.
Ochako tried to use the glorious hues of the summertime sunset to find a measure of peace. Her lungs relished in the fresh air, delighting in the brief reprieve from more strenuous activities. It would be nice if she could just sit out here for a while.
But she knew she had no choice but to keep walking toward her doom.
As she finally arrived into the dorms and entered the class 3-A building, she found herself ambushed by hands. She could not keep track of how many as they grabbed hold of her tightly, preventing any hope she had of escape. Before she knew what was happening, she was getting yanked along deeper into the facility.
"Took you long enough!" Mina exclaimed, unable to contain the enthusiasm bursting in her voice. "Come on, we're all waiting for you!
Ochako groaned, wanting to protest, but let herself get pulled along limply. She looked up and realized the other hands dragging her along helplessly belonged to Tooru — who was waving her free arm rather excitedly — and Tsuyu, who sent a little apologetic smile her way.
They passed by a few of their male classmates along the way, their quick gait raising more than a few eyebrows and earning a passing scolding from Iida. But soon enough — too soon for Ochako's liking — they found their way to her room. She was pulled in unceremoniously by her friends for the "fun" to begin.
The image before her was perhaps less horrific than Ochako might have originally imagined. Momo and Kyoka were rifling through her dresser, a few of her outfits placed on her nearby desk for consideration. There were also more extravagant clothing choices in the pile that definitely did not come from her wardrobe.
Her eyes were next drawn towards the teetering piles of girly fashion magazines strewn about her bed. Tooru hands quickly disengaged from Ochako to start rifling through them. The invisible girl held a couple of choices up in her hands, the magazines appearing to float quickly from side to side. Ochako imagined Tooru was probably grinning widely at the prospect of subjecting her to the contents within.
Finally, she saw plenty of snacks gathered around her small table, from Pocky to sponge cakes to chocolate. Ochako's eyes were immediately glued to the snack food she tended to spurn for budgetary reasons, and her stomach growled at the prospect of digging in.
Mina perceptively grabbed a box of Pocky and shoved it in Ochako's hands, before pushing towards Momo and the clothing piled up on her desk.
"You can eat while we work on your outfit," Mina suggested with a beaming grin. "Let Operation: Date Preparation commence!"
With that, Ochako quickly tried to scarf down a couple of Pocky sticks while Momo pulled her in front of a full-length mirror — undoubtedly brought in from Momo's room — and started holding outfits in front of Ochako's chest.
"You don't really have a lot of clothes," Momo observed, holding up a white blouse from Ochako's wardrobe. "Do you have anything else in another suitcase somewhere?"
"Spoken like a rich kid," Tsuyu teased from Ochako's bed, sending a blush running into Momo's cheeks.
"I'm just asking, that's all!" Momo protested.
Ochako cracked a smile, but shook her head at Momo's question while chewing on her Pocky. The theatrics of this was too much for her personal taste, but she knew her friends were coming from the right place. In fairness, she had no idea how she was supposed to approach her first-ever date.
Just the thought of it made Ochako's cheeks a little rosy as she looked at herself in the mirror. Her reddening face did not go unnoticed.
"Well, we'll find something nice for you to wear for tomorrow," Mina stated matter-of-factly, creeping up behind Ochako and holding a tiny little red shirt that was definitely not something she'd ever have in her own wardrobe. "Something that will make Midoriya's jaw drop."
"I am not wearing something like that!" Ochako exclaimed between bites, shaking her head and reaching a hand out to push the shirt away. Mina responded by yanking it out of her grasp, like a matador battling with a raging bull.
"I just want something...something simple," Ochako continued after swallowing her mouthful of Pocky. She eyed the white blouse that had been discarded into what she guessed was a "no" pile and pulled it back in front of her. "What's wrong with this?"
"Well, it's kind of something you'd usually wear, isn't it?" Tsuyu observed, putting an elongated finger to her cheek. "Isn't this supposed to be something special, ribbit?"
"It's your first date! Live a little!" Tooru piped in, piling on the peer pressure.
"I would suggest trying to wear something a little different. It's a good idea, from what I've read anyway," Momo noted, giving a gentle smile as she pulled the blouse out of Ochako's suddenly weak grip. "Don't worry, I'm not going to try to get you in anything you're not comfortable with," she assured, sending a threatening glance Mina's way.
"This stuff is way too complicated," Kyoka muttered, leaning against the desk while idly flipping through one of Tooru's magazines, eyes wandering around the room.
"You're telling me," Ochako said, frowning as she looked at herself in the mirror. She had never been particularly self-conscious about her appearance — she had much bigger problems to worry about than that. But the world of dating brought with it a whole host of unexpected little pressures she was struggling to come to grips with.
Being involved with Deku romantically had been mostly wonderful. Their interactions usually started a little on-edge with the romantic dimension added onto their relationship. But it would normally not last long, and they would fall back into the easygoing camaraderie they both treasured. Only now, Ochako could actually act on her occasional urges to touch and lean against him. It had been a lot of fun seeing him react and be so flustered as she gently poked at the first steps into a physical side to their relationship.
The emotional side of things had also been slow and tentative. They were already close confidants, but there was plenty neither was forthcoming to share with the other. Ochako had tried to be a little bit more open about her frustrations, venting frequently about her loss against Bakugo. It had felt better than she would have thought. Deku was a wonderful listener.
Despite the progress, the two had put off the date to allow for her leg to heal. When that excuse was out of the way, Ochako had found herself suddenly scrambling to ready herself for a promised day out. The nerves had gotten the best of her, and before she knew it, Mina had roped her into a girls' night to prepare, which Ochako had very quickly regretted agreeing to.
"Come on, this should be fun!" Mina retorted. "You're going to be going on a date with your lover! Isn't that exciting?"
Ochako felt her cheeks heat up at Deku being referred to as her "lover."
"Not really…" she replied, touching a hand to a pinkish cheek. "I'm just...is that how I should feel about this?"
"That's up to you," Tsuyu stated in her usual monotone, sitting by the snack table with a bag of chips in hand. "None of us would even know what that's like, except for Tooru."
"Well, I know I was excited!" Tooru exclaimed, the sleeves of her pink shirt pumping upwards. "I practically couldn't sleep the night before my first date!"
"Yeah, but you've been planning your first date since you were seven," Kyoka noted dryly, wearing a smile while rolling her eyes. "Not all of us are into this kind of thing."
"Well, Ochako has to be at least a little into this, considering she said yes to Midoriya," Momo observed while holding a yellow sundress over Ochako's chest. "This could work, couldn't it? Want to try it on?"
"Sure, I guess," Ochako said, hesitantly taking ahold of the dress she imagined was more expensive than anything in her wardrobe. "I guess I'm glad to be going on a date with him. But I'm more nervous than anything else. Am I supposed to act any differently? And all this preparation...do I really need this?"
"Yes!" Mina and Tooru shouted in unison, causing Ochako to jump slightly in place.
"People do tend to get a little dressed up on dates, after all," Momo added, nodding in agreement with their group's hyperactive pair. "But it doesn't have to be stressful. We're here to help, as girlfriends do!"
"Tell 'ya what. How about you say why you wanted to go on this date with him?" Mina suggested. Ochako noticed how all the girls leaned forward a little at the question, even Kyoka.
Ochako bit her lip at being suddenly put on the spot. "Well, I just...we had just confessed to each other and I just felt really...happy in the moment. And when he tried to ask me out, he was so nervous and stuttering and it was just really...really cute."
"Awww…" Tooru sighed, flopping her back down onto the bed while clutching a pillow.
"And it was actually pretty easy to say yes," Ochako recalled, a smile blooming onto her face as she remembered. "It was just...a really good moment."
"Now that's what I'm talking about!" Mina shouted, clapping her hands together. The pink girl popped in front of Ochako and grabbed her shoulders. "That's why you're doing this! Just hold on to that feeling and have fun with it!"
"If you're glad about going out with Midoriya, then getting ready should be happy too, shouldn't it?" Tsuyu added, affixing Ochako with a rare smile.
Ochako eyed herself in the mirror, appreciating the wide smile on her face. A happy moment. Right. That's why she had said she'd put herself through this romance in the first place, wasn't it? To pursue her own form of selfish happiness for a change.
Mina winked in the mirror from behind her, as if reading her thoughts. The pink girl leaned in again, placing her head right next to Ochako's right ear.
"It'll be great," Mina said, her voice surprisingly soft, but her smile no less exuberant. Ochako got a little tingle down her spine from the proximity of Mina's voice. "I promise."
Ochako scanned the room and the grinning faces of all her friends. As grating as their peer pressure could be sometimes, she was happy they were there for her as she prepared for this uneasy foray into romance.
The pursuit of happiness was one best walked with friends by your side, after all.
Was her heart supposed to be ready to start running out of her chest?
Ochako asked herself a variation of that question for the third time in five minutes as she awaited her... .boyfriend (her thoughts still paused to dwell on it every time she considered Deku that way).
The simple yellow sundress she and her friends had agreed on suddenly felt tight on her skin as she sweat under the hot summer sun and her own nerves. The anticipation of an imminent date brought all of her anxieties to the forefront.
What if this goes wrong? Is this a good idea? How am I supposed to act? Was this the right outfit? What should I say first?
The advice of her friends got lost within the questions spiralling out of control in her mind. She looked up at the windows of the U.A. dorm building. She idly wondered if her friends were there, watching from above as she awaited her first date.
She quickly stomped the question out of her mind. Of course they were.
Ochako idly pulled out her cell phone and looked at the clock yet again. 11:01 a.m. She blinked at the display. She frowned at the numbers, idly tapping her foot as she considered them. She had never seen Deku be late for anything before. She did not really mind if he was late now — not yet anyway — but she could not help but wonder what his tardiness might mean.
As if on cue, she heard the quick patter of footsteps as Deku burst from the entrance door to the dorms. He was sprinting with his quirk, causing him to rush past her at first. It took him a moment to realize before he suddenly stopped himself and turned to run back towards her. His quirk-enhanced speed sent a strong gust flying Ochako's way, causing her to close her eyes and dig her feet in a little in reflex.
"Sorry! I...I lost track of the time and I'm sorry!" Deku blurted out in a panic between panting breaths, bent over slightly to grab his knees. Ochako opened her eyes to consider her date. He wasn't wearing anything flashy — a simple black shirt with shorts and his trademark red shoes. His green hair and freckled face were just the same as ever, too. The average, every day, plain-looking Deku.
She tried to think like that to keep herself calm, but her racing pulse and dry throat betrayed her. Love did funny things.
"It's alright, Deku!" she replied brightly after letting him catch his breath for a moment. "You were hardly late at all. But did something keep you?"
"Well I...um...well...you know…" his stare was wide upon her, and his mouth went slack between his multiple false starts at answering. She regarded him with a smile, which sent a heavy flush to his face, much to her delight. Her friends had assured her he would probably be more of a nervous wreck than she would be during this. She was counting on it to help keep her grounded and remind herself they were taking these first steps together, each as clueless as the other.
"Know what?" Ochako asked, leaning in just a little closer. She had to admit, it was fun getting Deku to react like this, now that she was actually looking for it.
"Just...getting ready!" Deku managed with a little too much volume, before reaching out suddenly and holding his hand in front of her. "Would you like to take my hand?!"
Ochako stared down at the offered, scarred appendage. She slowly glanced up to see Deku, sweating profusely, mouth stuck in a hard line. She looked back down to see his hand start to shake in place.
Try as she might, she could not help it. She burst out laughing.
"Sorry, it's just….you're so serious!" Ochako said between chuckles, trying to assuage his evident distress. "You're too cute, Deku! Did Iida suggest that?"
Deku averted his eyes at the question, reeling in his hand and putting it back to his side. "...Maybe."
"So…" Ochako replied, shaking her head. "I take it you were dragged into some preparation too?"
Izuku sighed and scratched the back of his head. "Well...kind of. It was mostly just a lot of arguing. Not a lot of guys in class actually have a lot of experience with this kind of thing. How'd it go for you?"
"A little better, I think," Ochako said with sincerity. "They actually helped me out a lot."
"That's good." He smiled at her, but it ran quickly from his face as he looked at her again. He put his eyes downward and scratched at his blushing, freckled cheek. "Um...you look really nice, Ochako."
The compliment was simple. But she still found herself sucking in a breath, rendered speechless. The heat on her brow felt just a little bit more intense.
"Ochako?" His soothing voice penetrated the silence as she tried to gather herself.
"Oh...um….thanks, Deku," Ochako replied. She took a deep breath and tried to collect herself.
What should she say here? She should try to respond in kind, right? That's what Tooru's magazines said, anyway.
"You look...good too…?" It was true, but Ochako's voice had no certainty in it. It almost came out like a question. Fortunately, the remark nonetheless sent Deku sputtering.
"I don't...well...thank you," Deku replied simply, eyes glued to the ground, his mouth furrowed inward as if to prevent himself from saying something more.
An awkward silence struck between them, neither of the two willing to look at the other. Ochako frowned as she tried to think of what she should say next. A part of her desperately wanted interacting with him to be as easy as when they were just friends.
She idly roamed her eyes forward to his right hand, offered to her earlier. She seized upon an impulse, wanting to push things forward.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained, after all.
When her hand met his, the touch was electric. Far too much so. Deku jumped slightly as if he was shocked, eyes bulging comically as he realized her sudden proximity.
"Well...I would be happy to take your hand!" Ochako gave him the best smile she could muster, trying to mask her nerves. In spite of his flushed cheeks, Deku gave her a shaky smile in kind.
"Thanks. But...um...Ochako?"
"Hm?"
"I'm kind of floating."
"Floating?"
Ochako's eyes widened in alarm as she realized Deku's feet were no longer touching the ground.
"Oh, shoot, sorry!" Ochako said, immediately letting go of her hold on his hand to touch her fingertips together.
Deku plopped back down on the ground, maintaining his balance. Ochako smiled sheepishly at him, letting her hands fall slackly down to her sides. She wanted to crawl under a rock. How had she messed up something so simple?
But she found the steel within herself and reached out again, slowly and more carefully. Deku actually met her halfway, intertwining his fingers with hers. The slower speed allowed her to better appreciate the feeling of his scarred flesh on her fingertips. His hand was coarse, uneven, and calloused, not unlike her own. But his hand was gentle and pleasant to clasp nonetheless.
"Third time's the charm, right?" Ochako suggested. Her spirits were lifted slightly by his humoured snort and his accompanying smile. His face had not gotten any less red, but at least he was no longer shaking.
"Right," Deku agreed. "Who knew holding someone's hand could be this difficult?"
"Not us," Ochako replied in good humour while shaking her head. "But...I guess we'll figure things out."
"Together." There was a surety in his voice, a familiar one that stabilized her own resolve.
"Shall we go, then?" Ochako suggested, stepping forward and pulling his arm along.
"Lead the way."
The trek to their designated cafe, where they agreed to have a light dinner, was fairly uneventful. They filled the space between them with idle chatter, each trying to give a degree of normalcy to the situation. It was not as difficult as Ochako had imagined it would be.
But a degree of romantic tension remained. Their hands remained clasped, to the point where it had gotten a little awkward walking through a crowd to get to their destination. But whenever they broke apart, they tried to join their hands once again. It had become a strange, unspoken physical connection between them, one neither of them was willing to break.
The cafe was a little crowded, but not enough for things to be cumbersome. As they took their seats, hands finally disengaging, Ochako busied herself with the menu in front of her. She looked a little mournfully at the pricier options, wishing she could splurge but settling for something more in line with her budget. The two had been here enough times with friends to at least know there were options for two broke high school students.
With orders made and drinks served (they both settled for water), there was nothing left to distract themselves except occasional sips from their respective glasses. The silence between them started to stretch, but despite that, Ochako did not feel uncomfortable. It was similar to any other day out with Deku. There were just fewer people they knew around them. People that she knew of, anyway.
"So...uh...how has your internship been going lately?" Deku asked suddenly, trying to spur conversation between them. His delivery was a little awkward, but Ochako did not mind.
"Pretty well, actually," she replied cheerily, smiling as the memories surfaced within her. "Ryukyu and I busted a jewelry store robbery while on patrol yesterday."
"That's great!" Deku spoke with such a genuine enthusiasm, one that naturally burst out of him whenever the conversation turned to heroics. It was one of his more endearing qualities. "I didn't see anything about it online though. Did Ryukyu not use her quirk then?"
"Just enough for a claw. It's a little weird to look at, but effective."
"I bet."
There was a beat of silence as Ochako started to fidget a bit in her seat. She wanted to say something more, but she was worried about how Deku might take.
But today was a day of firsts. If she could have enough courage to hold Izuku's hand, she could summon the gumption to get the good news off her chest.
"She offered me a job. For after I graduate." Ochako's eyes rolled down to the table, and she tried to control the smile widening on her face. Thinking about it still made her giddy, but she figured she should try to control it around Deku. He might still be sore over his lost opportunities, after all.
"THAT'S AMAZING!" Deku shouted, face beaming. His volume drew a few eyeballs in their direction, prompting him to fly a hand to his mouth. He waited until the attention was off them before continuing. "I'm so happy! You earned it! What kind of deal did she offer?"
Ochako was a little caught off guard by his unbridled enthusiasm, but she rolled with it. His delight was infectious, and she was glad to release her own joy at the news.
"More than I expected. Five million yen annual salary to start off," Ochako said. She rested her head in her hand, her head heavy at the prospect of it all. "And she thinks I can get a sponsorship deal within a few months to add to that."
"Holy…" Deku's eyes widened at the figure, his mouth going a little slack. "That's way above average for something just out of high school. That's incredible!"
"She said she wanted to make sure to put a good offer so no other agency would steal me away," Ochako recalled. It was still hard for her to believe — that she would actually be fought over by hero agencies. It was not something she would have dared to dream of even a few months ago.
"What did your parents think?"
Ochako sighed wistfully as the quick phone conversation came to mind. "They wouldn't stop crying about it. Or saying how proud they were of me. It was nice."
"Your hard work is paying off," Deku observed, his voice softening. "So...did you accept it?"
"Well, I was really tempted, but I'm going to wait and weigh my options. Maybe something better comes along," Ochako said. She looked up and sent a confident smile Deku's way, raising a fist upward in front of her. "I've got to make sure I get the best deal and make the most money possible. I'm not going to commit to anything until I'm sure I have it!"
"Wow, Uraraka. That's...that's really cool." Awe rang through every decibel of his voice. The wonder with which he looked at her was peculiar, but touching. She wondered if that was what she looked like sometimes when she was watching him in action.
"So...how have things been with your training?" Ochako did not specify, but she hoped he would divulge a little about what he was working on with All Might. The duo had gotten rid of a lot of the pretense of their one-on-one training over the years, but there was still a mystique about what exactly the two's training entailed.
"It's going well!" He spoke with a smile on his face, but he did not sound quite as enthusiastic as he did when speaking about her career. "It's gotten pretty tough lately. But it's all starting to come together. Although perhaps it is taking longer than I wanted…"
His eyes went out of focus. He was once again looking at something beyond her. She put a smile on her face, but was not sure how to feel about the secrecy.
"Well, I'm sure you'll figure it out. You're way too smart not to."
"Oh!" Deku said a little loudly, startled out of his distant thoughts. "Uh, sorry about zoning out. And...thanks."
"Don't worry about it," she assured him. She was tempted to reach a hand out to emphasize her point, but decided it might be a little forward. Or maybe it wasn't, but she would rather not take that chance.
A brief lull in their conversation allowed a line from the distant drone of a nearby television set within the cafe to capture their attention.
"In hero news, we have an exclusive for you today. We've acquired footage of Mt. Lady and Kamui Woods kissing after a mission. Hero enthusiasts have long speculated about their relationship, and now we are happy to be able to confirm it! Let's roll that footage now."
Ochako watched bemusedly as Deku clambered out of his seat to stand and get a better view of the news report. She still followed him though, quite curious about it herself.
Lo and behold, the hero world's most famous couple were indeed caught in the act. The shot was pretty distant and fuzzy, but the two were unmistakable and definitely executing a mouth-to-mouth in an alleyway. It looked a little strange to see Kamui Woods with the bottom half of his mask off and their extended passion was a little embarrassing to look at.
"I knew it!" Deku exclaimed, raising a fist in front of him in excitement. No bit of hero news escaped his attention — even romantic news, apparently. But his smile quickly faded and he pinched at his chin in thought.
"I wonder what's going to happen to them now. They're probably going to have a lot of attention on them for a few weeks."
Ochako frowned a little at the thought. There were very few publicly known hero couples out there. Most known romantic partners of heroes tended to be people outside the profession. She imagined it was hard enough having one person in a relationship dealing with the strains of heroics, let alone two.
As a result, speculation on the "Mt. Woods" pairing had garnered a lot of media attention. Even she had caught wind of it, despite not really following hero gossip. It would be a top story for at least a few days.
Ochako glanced sidelong at Deku, who seemed to be lost in thought. He was mumbling, but it was low enough that she could not make out what he was saying. As if by automation, he turned to clamber back into his seat. She followed his lead.
"It must be really hard to be in a position like that…" Deku stated with more volume, eyes locked downward, gazing into nothingness. "Not being able to just be with the person you like without the paparazzi going after you."
"Yeah, for sure." Their profession had its drawbacks. Villainy was restless, and so too was heroism. It was hard to find privacy if you reached the top. The world would constantly scrutinize them.
Though they walked it together, their fledgling love was an uncertain road. Those were the storm clouds on the distant horizon.
They both understood that.
"...You know, before we...talked. After the fight, I mean. All Might came over to talk with me first."
Ochako looked up at him quickly, snapping out of thoughts. That was not something he had mentioned before.
"About what?"
"Well, a lot of things. How I fought, how I lost, and…" Deku finally looked up at her again, eyes bright and mouth suddenly turning upward. "And about how to handle what you told me."
"Oh…" she responded sheepishly. How else could she react? There was no way his mentor could have been happy about how she won that fight. "What did he say?"
"Well, I guess he was quiet for a while. And he asked me how I felt about you. I said...well…" his cheeks immediately reddened and he stopped his tongue. Ochako smiled at the adorable reaction. "I was honest with him."
"And how did he react?"
Deku straightened his posture and puffed his chest out a bit, evidently trying to mimic his idol.
"If you feel that way, then tell her," Deku dropped his voice an octave, managing a surprisingly passable impersonation of his hero. "Don't worry about what anyone else has to say. Don't worry about what might happen tomorrow. You're young. You should live."
Ochako did not have time to respond before Deku was suddenly reaching across the table to grab her outstretched hand, squeezing it.
"I don't want to worry too much about the future right now." He spoke with his heroic conviction, his blazing eyes sending her heart into a hammering pace. "I just want to live. With you."
Her heart started running fast as a freight train. Ochako gulped and tried to stomp down hard on her flightier reactions. She felt torn between urges to either jump for joy or crawl underneath a bed to hide her blushing face.
But she wanted to control her feelings — in a positive manner. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and squeezed his hand back.
"I want to stay with you too, Deku." She tried to match his conviction, flashing him with a sunny smile. "Whatever may come. I'm ready to face it."
Their ferocity for themselves and each other momentarily cast aside their nerves. The sweet sincerity of the moment, of their determination to continue on this winding path into the unknown, warmed Ochako to her core.
But the moment could not last forever.
"Um…I mean live with you. Like we are now. Not necessarily in a domestic sense. Probably a little early for that." Deku slowly retracted his hand as he spoke, quickly burying his face into his palm as he tried to address a meaning not taken.
"Oh, right! I didn't take it that way, don't worry!" Ochako tried to reassure him through her own fire raging across her face. She scratched the back of her head and hoped they could both learn how to make romantic proclamations without wanting to cower in fear.
Fortunately, the arrival of their orders helped break the tension and made for an easy pivot into small talk.
They silently agreed to try and settle back into a more easy-going conversation. They chatted about homework, training regimens, the latest antics of Class 3-A, and even some shared mirth about their respective date preparation sessions. It was like any other conversation she might have had with Deku before their mutual pinings made it all so much more complicated. But she was relieved to still be able to talk with him like this — even on something as nebulous as a first date.
With their bellies full, they walked out into the busy streets, bathed under the light of an orange sky. They did not hold hands this time, quietly electing for a reprieve from that particular gesture. But their spirits remained high as they walked side-by-side back towards the dorms.
"This has been a wonderful time, Deku." She spoke honestly, hovering close enough to him to be audible over the bustle of the street. "I'm glad we did this."
"Yeah!" He nodded with vigour, an open-mouthed smile upon his face. "There's one more thing I wanted to do, though. We'll have to wait until it's dark. Is that okay with you?"
Ochako blinked at the question. They had not discussed anything beyond going out to grab a bite. The idea that Deku had something else planned, something that could only be done under the cover of darkness, was intimidating.
But their shared meal had made her spirits soar. And she wanted to see what the next leap of faith might have in store for her.
"Sure!" Ochako replied, not missing a beat. "I haven't got anything planned, so why not?"
"Great!" Deku replied, his smile growing a little wider. "I can't wait to show you."
"Show me…?" Ochako asked, but Deku shook his head at the question.
"Just wait. You'll see."
Curiosity piqued, Ochako tried to start guessing what he was up to. But Deku was unshakable in his secrecy, quickly causing her to run out of steam.
When the two finally arrived at the U.A. dorms, Ochako was surprised when Deku gestured them off the beaten path. She quietly followed behind as he took them along the grassy landscape, around the side of the facility.
"This should be decently out of the way," Deku stated as he looked up one of the towering corners of the main building. Ochako followed his gaze, looking up at the endless windows stretched above them.
"I did get permission to set something up. We could take the stairs but…" Deku turned his gaze back to her as he pointed towards the sky. "It's a little high up."
"On the roof?" Ochako guessed. Deku answered with an eager nod.
"I think I can probably leap up there with some care, but it'd be a lot easier with the help of your quirk. Mind giving us a lift?
Ochako glanced up again, the dorm building's height a little imposing from this far below. She looked back down to Deku, his eager smile unwavering on his face.
She boldly reached out and grabbed his hand, grinning back at him. "Not at all."
With that, Deku channelled his quirk into his legs and leapt up high, pulling Ochako along with him. The initial rush of air around her ears startled her, and she instinctively clung to his arm, not wanting to end up falling below him. But the speed slowed quickly and left them hanging gently in the air, the grass and trees below them blending together as they soared into the sky.
When they reached the peak of their arc, well above the dorm facility itself, Ochako shifted her gaze in front of them. The central, flat part of the roof — the only place they could logically land — did not appear to have anything on it from this height. But she trusted whatever Deku was planning would be more visible once they got their feet atop it.
She finally chanced a glance toward him. His eyes were intently focused on sticking their landing, surprisingly unphased by how tightly she clung to his arm. The wind danced the hair across his forehead, and his focused expression was captivating. Be still, my beating heart, she thought to herself as she loosened her hold around his arm slightly.
The two landed smoothly, Ochako disengaging her quirk a little above the roof to ensure they both stood on their feet. She quickly let go of his arm, glancing sidelong to see his reddened cheeks, as if he just realizing she had been holding onto him tightly.
"So...what have you got planned?" Ochako asked again, keeping her attention focused on him. She watched Deku shake his head a bit as if shaking off unruly thoughts. He turned to smile at her before pointing over to the edge of the roof, near the back of the building.
It was a little hard to make out, but Ochako could tell what it was. Small, cylindrical, and directed upward toward the darkening sky, the telescope looked puny atop the massive rooftop. There was a thick-looking book beneath it, undoubtedly filled with information on astronomy.
"I remember you mentioning something about going out to see the stars with your parents last summer…" Deku murmured, scratching at his head. "You seemed really excited about it. I just figured we could maybe try to watch some stars here."
His voice wavered as his explanation went on as if fearing his idea was not going to work out.
Ochako did not have much experience, but she knew this was certainly a weird choice for a date. Most people would stick with something like a movie or an amusement park — the wholesome activities media tended to associate with dating. Night sky viewing on an empty rooftop was certainly a unique, and rather nerdy, choice.
But she loved it.
One of the things she disliked most about moving into the city was how hard it was to see the stars under all the light pollution. She tried to find places that might give her a fleeting glimpse of the night skies she treasured at her rural home, but it was no use. She had enough on her schedule without trying to squeeze time in for astronomical whims.
But now Deku was serving it up for her on a platter. She was eager to dig in.
Without letting Deku ramble on, Ochako grabbed his hand again and pulled him over to the telescope.
"Let's see what we can find!" Ochako shouted, unleashing her enthusiasm in a show of unbridled passion.
Ochako immediately plunged her face toward the eyehole of the telescope, fiddling with its alignment to see what she could see. With dusk still hanging around, the sky was not quite dark enough for stars. But there were a few bright spots starting to appear in the sky. A crescent moon was also in view, and Ochako peeked around the telescope to try to adjust it toward that direction.
She could hear Deku move around the other side, leaning down to pick up the book on the ground.
"It's too bad we can't see much with the city lights, but we can at least see a few bright spots," Deku said encouragingly as he flipped through the pages of the book. "I heard that Venus is going to be really bright tonight. Let me just see where it's supposed to be…"
Ochako focused in on the moon, admiring the beauty of it up close, the shadow clearly visible with the help of the telescope.
"That's so cool…" Ochako sighed breathily, letting herself get loose into the wonder of it all. "You should come check out the moon, Deku!"
"Oh, sure," he replied quickly, shuffling the book under his arm and stepping forward to take a peek. He accidentally grazed her hand as she let him have some room. The fleeting touch was pleasant, but Ochako determinedly did not allow it to phase her.
"Thank you for this, by the way. It was really thoughtful."
"Oh…you're welcome," Deku replied, suddenly thrusting his eye into the telescope with a little more vigour. "I wasn't too sure, but I'm glad you like it."
"It's been too long since I just looked up at the stars like this." There were only a couple of bright spots in the sky, but they were enough to put a smile on her face. "I've always felt…peaceful, watching the stars with someone I care about. You know what I mean?"
"I can't say I've really done much stargazing." He pulled his head away to look at her, flashing her a smile. "But I think I get it."
The two took turns glimpsing up at the night sky, slowly pushing their telescope to look at every corner they could. There were only a few bright spots to see, such as Venus and Sirius. But they were still able to enjoy each other's company, flipping through pages in the astronomy book, making excuses for fleeting contact and teasing plans to watch a real starry night sky together in the countryside some day.
Ochako was idly fiddling with the telescope's calibration when she saw it, flashing across the sky. A streak of light flashed across her vision, brighter than she would have expected through the lens of the telescope.
"Woah!" she naturally exclaimed, pulling Deku's attention.
"What is it?"
"Shooting star!" Ochako replied excitedly, her hands pointing to the sky as she looked back up at her date.
"Oh, really? That's awesome! I'm sorry I missed it." He directed his naked eyes toward the night sky, hoping another star might fall. "How big was it? Was it only one?"
"Pretty small. Just the one." A warm feeling overcame her as she thought about it. "Still cool, though. I've never seen one in the city before."
"That's pretty lucky," Deku noted, taking his eyes off of the sky to give her a knowing look. "So, are you going to make a wish?"
Ochako almost balked at the idea. She had not made a wish on a shooting star since she was a little girl. The magic of the idea was lost when her childhood wishes for her parents' financial well-being were never granted.
But tonight felt different. Tonight felt like maybe there was a little more magic than usual in the air, silly as it sounded in her head.
"Maybe..." Ochako's soft voice was non-committal. She took a step away from the telescope, trying to focus on the question Deku posed. "I'm not even sure what I would wish for."
"Me neither," Deku responded while stroking at his chin. "I mean, you already gave me the only thing I would have wished for lately. There's always world peace, but that's not going to—"
"What was that?" Ochako asked, blinking and straining to make sure she was hearing him correctly. She was his only wish?
Deku stopped his rambling, his eyes widening and face flushing as he realized what he accidentally let out.
"Uh…well, I didn't mean it like that! Well, I did mean it, but not in a weird way. Is that weird?"
He looked pleadingly toward her, lips trembling in search of a lifeline.
Ochako let out a giggle at his awkward fumbling through what could have been a good romantic line. Deku would never be able to maintain much in the way of suaveness, but she wouldn't have it any other way.
"It's fine. A part of me had wished for this for a long time too, after all," Ochako said honestly, waving a hand at him reassuringly.
Deku breathed a sigh of relief, smiling in thanks at her. She smiled back as familiar, warm butterflies flew about in her gut.
He really had helped her fulfill so many of her hopes and dreams. She still had a long way to go to accomplish her goals of becoming a pro and helping her parents, but Deku had undoubtedly helped set her on the right course for that. Her self-doubts were slowly fading as she trained every day and built upon the resolve she found facing off against him.
There was not much she could realistically wish for because she knew it was not enough to wish. You had to take reaching your dreams — and your happiness — into your own hands.
There were a lot of things she wished for. But there was one thing in front of her she could grasp now.
"I think I know what I'd like to wish for, actually." She approached him with a mirthful tone, sliding up before he realized what was happening.
His throat bobbed as she rose up to meet him face-to-face. She could count the freckles on his cheeks again. But she was much more drawn to his widened eyes, mysterious new embers buried deep within those green depths.
"What would…that be?"
For just a moment, she was sure she was amongst the stars.
