So Id like to mention that COVID19 has put a lot of things into perspective.
My industry of experiential marketing was literally one of the first to go about a week ago when stores began banning all live demonstrations. I work in the natural and organic food industry doing live events and cooking recipes on site to sample brands to customers at grocery retailers. And because sampling tables are good places to spread germs, my demos all immediately came to a stop. I'm also an in home, private Music Teacher to kids of various ages and needless to say if schools' on hold, so is teaching. and so is income. My Venmo is :ABBlas22
Which sucks, a lot because the majority of my work is independent contractor based. . . .and there's no health care, paid leave, unemployment, or sick time. Why do I still do it? Because I love the industry, the opportunities it affords me, and the pay is solid. Except come tax season. The Government likes to fuck you if you work for yourself. . . .even tho I pay for all my own equipment and car repairs to get me from job to job. My Venmo is ABBlas22
However, amid the panic, I havent felt this calm in years. The constant anxiety and pressure of having to make money and go to work and be on time and make my schedule and drive from this city to that city for this demo and that demo, has subsided. I finally wake up and I'm not staring at the clock counting down how long before I have to leave which triggers an anxiety fest about leaving my dogs home alone because my one dog has such severe separation anxiety she destroys her crate, escapes, and then ruins the house(we are actively working on it) . . .so I'm up early and nervous about, "ok I have three hours I have to walk the dogs for at least one of those hours, feed them, get dressed, brush teeth, try to eat, clean the house, stuff their Kongs, make sure I have everything I need, and then try to sneak out before the dog starts freaking out." followed by "did I book enough demos this week, if I have to execute 16 for the month where can I put another demo, should I give myself a day off? nah, i need the money, let me check my Google calendar for the 65th time this morning and stare at all the blank dates I should be booking demos instead of doing anything else because no matter how much I work, it is never enough. So I spend an hour worrying about plunging my family into financial ruin. . . . better get online and start digging thru emails and brand Ambassador groups to make sure I've got enough work. Oh what's that? the sound of my entire family and partner telling me to get a *regular* job even though the idea of punching a clock and working for someone else makes me physically sick. . but I go and do it anyway because its a W2 position so you think well maybe I'll get health benefits at least and then come to find out that this bullshit retail job doesn't give part timers benefits of any kind, but I keep the job anyway because everyone said a normal job was best, but it pays $6 less an hour than my demo gigs and is a total waste of my skills and professional experience and eventually is cutting into my income because its taking up so many weekly hours but pays significantly less that I start calling out to go do demos instead and then the same people who were like "get a regular job" turn around and go "no, not That job, try This job."
and I'm over here ready to fucking scream because I've Been very clear about wanting to be in business for myself. I have tried many things, including testing an extremely beta version of what eventually became Uber Eats. . . I could be a millionaire but my parents thought it was a stupid idea and once I used up my resources trying to drum up business, that was it.
also, this is the worst part about being a millennial. I went to college for music because they said be anything and follow your dreams . . .but then I graduated into recession (2006) and got the first job I could,at a deli, which . . . .isn't exactly a degree holding position. For years we said,"I'm just grateful I Have a Job right now." and we got bitter, broke, and depressed as a generation. We're in our 30's now and it's just as bleak an outlook for our generational future. At least until the boomers die out and free up some of that wealth, if they don't all leave it to the cat and state first just to spite us.
So yea, people are freaked out with COVID19 but for the first time, I dont feel pressure or anxiety to rush out the house or make money because everything got cancelled. All I want to do is work super hard on my own online store via Shopify and grow from there. I love to work and I love the discipline of hard work. I would rather spend 18 hours in a day working on my own business and hustling my ass off to make it work using over a decade of marketing and sales experience to promote my brand for once.
But that's hard to invest time and money when I live paycheck to paycheck and have a partner and fur babies who depend on me. Everytime I excitedly talk about dropshipping through shopify and all my plans for it, it's met with a nervous "I believe in you but dont fuck us financially." "I believe in you but doesn't that take time." "I believe in you but why don't you just work here, they pay decent."
I love that the #Coronavirus hit and suddenly human rights are easy to hand out. I love that Coronavirus got us to halt economies on a scale so massive that will actually help us fight climate change. Capitalism has destroyed our planet and our species.
I want to always remind everyone that we are a species first. Not countrymen, not race, not religion. . . we are all dancing flesh bags, given different corporeal conduits with which to experience life and then later compare notes with one another.
"What's life like in that short skin suit?"
"Not bad but I can't reach anything."
"Good thing I got one of these tall skin suits." *grabs top shelf items*
"Thanks!"
It's to help us come together, understand similarities thru differences and use them to gain new perspectives while helping our species and our planet thrive.
This insane notion that everyone needs to have a job needs to go. Our species was Not made to do slave labor all day long for an invented wage that keeps us stuck fighting for basic survival when we have the potential to completely alter our lives.
The Earth is a hostage who's not allowed to feed her own kids. They locked up every fruit bearing tree, enslaved every animal, poisoned the soil, polluted the water and then held your life at gunpoint and demand you hand over hours of your life to work that does a disservice to your potential for greatness just for a chance to get a taste of what should be your birthright.
Basic needs of survival that all humans will die without shouldn't be prizes for who can work themselves to death the fastest.
Im using this time as an opportunity and am taking what little resources I have to work on my online store and sell off and flip what I can to make start up money on Ebay. (I dont even have WiFi and my apartment complex has locked the business center for CoronaVirus) . Using my phone for everything is really fucking tedious, especially because I've had it for 4 years and it doesn't always cooperate, but I'm grateful I even have one to use. If you want to invest in me, even just $5 I will 100% be using it to get a business off the ground. I've got most of the basic work done and market research, but with no income I cant even afford the basic Shopify plan at $30 a month, I'm hoping they pass a moratorium on evictions because how do I pay rent with no job to go to!?
My Venmo is : ABBlas22 and I do reward!

days before doom, 1992-1993
doom was a watershed moment in gaming culture. it changed everything; it rocketed id software from stardom into super-stardom, making them one of the most well-known names in the western games industry. it redefined the discussion on video game violence, climaxing in the shitstorm that surrounded the 1999 columbine shooting. and it put the first person shooter firmly on the map for good, looming large over developers, serving as the chief example of what happens when you push the envelope just that extra bit. it’s impossible to overstate just how important doom is. but the key thing about watershed moments is that there is a status before them as well as after them. in the years immediately preceding doom, the first person shooter genre was starting to grow in size, and a variety of approaches to design were prevalent. here, then, are three of doom’s immediate predecessors.
wolfenstein 3D
Tumblr media
the early years of modern PC gaming were a strange time; the burgeoning field of home PCs (at the time called IBM-compatibles) were replacing the multitude of home computers that ran with proprietary hardware and software, with increasing parity between brands when it came to internals and a slow gravitation towards plain beige boxes (not counting some of the more experimental models.) PC game development was something of a wild west, a career for hobbyists and isolated-but-brilliant coders. id software were no different, a motley four-man crew consisting of programmers, designers and an artist, who liked heavy metal and super mario, who met working in the games department for the computer magazine softdisk but chafed under softdisk's office culture. after proving that side-scrolling games could be done on then-underpowered PCs using a technique john carmack devised, they formed id software and began "borrowing" softdisk's computers over the weekend to design their own games, to be sold independently. after getting busted by the management, they left softdisk with no criminal charges under the stipulation that they write one game every two months for softdisk for a period of time, but without any direction from softdisk.
id software were now free to pursue their own avenues of game design, with john carmack's programming genius at the helm. alongside the now-classic platformer series commander keen, carmack's experiments in writing a first person engine had resulted in early landmark titles hovertank 3D and catacomb 3D. while catacomb 3D had been the result of carmack's assertion that he could write a faster texture renderer than the fully-textured ultima underworld, which he'd seen at a CES demo in 1990, wolfenstein 3D was intended to be the next step up -- faster, more action-packed, and -- most importantly -- violent.
similar to how catacomb 3D was a first-person followup to john carmack's softdisk title catacomb, the wolfenstein franchise goes back before its “3D” entry. the series began life in 1981 under the auspices of industry legend silas warner, whose apple II classic castle wolfenstein was a vastly different sort of game. a top-down shooter, castle wolfenstein is by all accounts the first stealth game, in which the player must hide from patrolling nazis, using stealth and subterfuge to complete their objective and escape from the castle. ammunition was scarce and the player was sometimes better off holding up guards and stealing their equipment, rendering them harmless. the game was a smash hit, with a followup coming three years later.
the idea to utilize the wolfenstein name was john romero's, but they ran through a number of alternate titles beforehand, among them "hard cell," "luger me now," and "how do you duseldorf?" after meeting with silas warner himself and getting his blessing, id software went ahead with the wolfenstein name and the rest is history.
Tumblr media
on a technical level, wolfenstein 3D was the next step up from catacomb 3D. while the basics of the engine were unchanged (textured walls, but no floors or ceilings) there were several notable updates under the hood. the most visible difference is the switch from the EGA display standard, which allowed for up to 16 colors (out of a palette of 64) to VGA, which could display up to 256 colors. that this switch was done mid-development is made plain in the somewhat limited palette in the art assets, with an abundance of shades of blue, turqouise or purple, all of which were common colors in EGA programs and games.
the second big difference was speed; players could move at an almost inhuman rate around the mazes of the game, and the focus was on action over the more sedate tactical espionage of castle wolfenstein. the emphasis on speed figured into the game design; plans for features like dragging bodies out of sight of patrolling guards were scrapped for the sake of keeping up the breakneck pace.
perhaps the standout element, of course, was the violence. sex and violence in video games and other media was an increasingly hot topic; the 80s had been marked by controversies surrounding games like custer's revenge and splatterhouse, and the legacy of 1976's death race 2000 cast a bit of a shadow as well. but nothing could have prepared the industry for what was to come in the 90s. wolfenstein 3D managed to slip in ahead of the shitstorm that id's next game, doom would get embroiled in alongside mortal kombat, but even still it drew concern from id's retail publisher at the time, formgen. artist adrian carmack (no relation to john) had long been a fan of gory themes in his work; doing the art for the relatively kid-friendly commander keen had chafed him, and he relished the opportunity to do something grotesque. hovertank 3D had been a good start, but wolfenstein 3D gave him the opportunity to really cut loose, and in response to formgen raising its concerns, he added much more violence to the art assets, the levels being dotted with skeletons and corpses, and tom hall and john romero recorded themselves screaming almost random phrases in broken german to give voice to the enemy forces. the original three episodes of the game culminated in a final battle with hitler, resulting in one of the goriest deaths ever seen on a screen at the time. (it's worth noting that this isn't the first time hitler's been exploded in a video game...)
Tumblr media
like doom, wolfenstein 3D saw a number of ports over the years; a mac version had updated graphics, but the one that most people remember is probably the SNES version, which is infamous for its censorship. gone were the nazis (hell, the bad guys didn’t even speak german anymore!) gone was the blood (it was sweat instead) and hitler himself was replaced by the generic “staatmeister.” the development of the SNES version is a particularly sore memory for id software, in part due to this censorship and in part due to the initial contractor (rebecca heineman) assigned to the porting project going AWOL.
wolfenstein 3D has a long legacy. the serious tone of castle wolfenstein had given way to a grindhouse vibe, stripping away complexity to leave one of the first pure action FPS games, where you go from point A to point B while killing everything in your way and occasionally using keys to progress. while its design was primitive compared to later games, with strictly orthogonal walls and an unchanging height, it proved the potential of the 3D engine for creating realistic environments. while the franchise has seen a couple of revivals, most recently in the utterly brilliant wolfenstein: the new order, it's wolfenstein 3D that laid the groundwork for the future, making the first person shooter popular and proving that shareware distribution was, for the time, a viable method of publishing games.
and besides, everybody loves dead nazis.
pathways into darkness
Tumblr media
speaking of dead nazis...
if id software were once the rock gods of PC gaming, bungie were the jazz masters of mac gaming. formed by a pair of college students in the early 90s, they got their start assembling and shipping copies of minotaur: the labyrinths of crete by hand, which is a seriously humble origin given the legendary status bungie holds today as the creator of halo and destiny. their early focus on mac development was largely due to jason jones, who grew up on apple computers, but also because the field was a lot more open in mac development at the time.
after the moderate success of minotaur, they set about working on a first person shooter, inspired by wolfenstein 3D. minotaur and bungie's earlier game operation: desert storm were quirky in an intellectual kind of way; operation: desert storm came with a glossary of military terms and trivia, and authentic maps of the kuwaiti theater of operations during the gulf war. pathways into darkness was no different, which set it apart from the mindless fun of wolfenstein 3D. initially intended to be a first person version of minotaur, they chose to write an original story instead, a lengthy tale of a secret special forces mission to stop the awakening of a dreaming cosmic monster deep beneath a pyramid in the yucatan peninsula. along the way one can speak to the dead that litter the pyramid's corridors, ranging from the player character's special forces comrades to a lost nazi expedition that had entered the pyramid in the late 1930s looking for a potential superweapon.
Tumblr media
in terms of technical stuff, the engine isn't a purely orthogonal game like wolfenstein 3D is. instead, walls are quite narrow, with beveled ends; while the underlying map design does seem to be grid-based, the grid squares appear to be much smaller than the massive blocks of wolfenstein 3D, which allows for narrow columns built out of in-game architecture rather than having to use sprites. lighting is not universal, either, and visibility fades into black off in the distance, though a flashlight pushes the darkness back a little. the initial version of the game used gradients for the walls and floors; the powerPC version finally texture maps these.
at times, the game comes off feeling more like a cross between a survival horror and an adventure game with dungeon crawler elements; a text parser requires some specific keywords for talking to the dead, and some of the puzzles are obtuse as hell, and it's entirely possible to play yourself into a corner without realizing it for hours. meanwhile, time actually passes as you play, and you only have five in-game days to complete your task. a weight limit determines how much you can carry, and healing options are limited to rare blue potions and sleeping, the latter of which uses up time. ammo is scarce until you find a certain magical item that lets you create duplicates of anything you put into it, and enemies respawn, furthering the constant threat. saving the game can only be done at save points, which are far and few between.
Tumblr media
in spite of its difficulty (or perhaps because of it) pathways into darkness was a smash hit; it was the first native first person shooter for the mac (not counting the colony) and launched bungie into stardom, enabling them to expand their operations.
unfortunately, accessibility to this fantastic game is quite limited. mac owners will be pleased to know that it's available for free on the app store; for everyone else, there's basilisk II (or sheepshaver for the powerPC version) but setting up can be quite the chore.
in addition, art game genius brendon chung has devised his own spin on the early hours of the game in the form of doom 3 mod pathways redux.
ultima underworld: the stygian abyss
Tumblr media
ultima and its major competitor wizardry are probably the two greatest influences on RPGs, east and west. a lot of the things we take for granted in RPGs now were invented and codified by these two series. for most of the early 80s they dominated sales, but by the early 90s they'd lost their grip on the market as their successors began to take over, especially final fantasy and other japanese series. ultima VI had shown the franchise still had the chops, but wizardry was fading fast, and by the 1990s only a cult following in japan really still cared about it. as the cRPG scene began to go dormant in the face of the rising wave of jRPGs, the bigger names began to experiment, tossing out a few spinoffs in an attempt to remain relevant. most of them weren’t successful -- the worlds of ultima series seem to have gone forgotten -- but there was at least one runaway hit.
ultima underworld: the stygian abyss began as the brainchild of paul neurath, who worked at origin systems, the company richard garriot founded to aid in publishing his ultima series, and which had grown into a huge company by the 1990s. neurath was dissatisfied with the simplistic graphics of earlier dungeon crawler games like wizardry, and wanted to create something that built on suspension of disbelief. he founded blue sky productions (not to be confused with bluesky software, creators of vectorman) with the intent of developing this game. the famous demo shown at CES 1990 came out of the early work; origin was so impressed that they offered a publishing agreement and suggested the game be rewritten as an ultima spinoff.
Tumblr media
i've written a lot in this space about immersive sims; one of the more invisible aspects of immersive sims, particularly the "traditional" ones like thief and deus ex, is a development process that is perhaps more organic than that of other studios. ultima underworld was developed in such an environment, and is often described as the first immersive sim -- and indeed, it would seem to fit by most any standards, including mine. stepping away from the grid-based movement of classic dungeon crawlers like dungeon master or, yes, wizardry, realtime movement combined with more tactile world interaction pushed ultima underworld out of the hoary old dungeon crawler genre and into something a little more interesting. there's actually a surprising amount of things to see and do, and the entirety of the dungeon is open to you. in a very real sense, ultima underworld laid the groundwork for everything from deus ex to skyrim to dark souls, on top of being leagues ahead of the competition in terms of technology, with fully-textured everything, curved walls, sloped ceilings and floors, and some early 3D models. it's also singlehandedly responsible for launching the career of warren spector, whose previous production work had been wing commander II and one of the worlds of ultima spinoff games. spector would go on to produce system shock, which was in a very real sense the sci-fi counterpart to ultima underworld, and the rest is history.
of course, a game with ultima underworld’s cult popularity can’t go without a sequel. by september 1992 origin was forced by money issues to sell to electronic arts (a shocking move given garriot's long-running hatred of EA founder trip hawkins.) blue sky ended up merging with lerner research, a small outfit that mostly did flight sims, to form looking glass technologies, and it was under these auspices that ultima underworld II: labyrinth of worlds was created in 1993, with much stronger ties to the ultima franchise than its predecessor. years later, arkane studios (they of dishonored fame) would create a spiritual sequel called arx fatalis. and just as the ultima series lives on in garriot's upcoming shroud of the avatar, so too will ultima underworld, in underworld ascendant.
Tumblr media
i'm on record as saying i strongly dislike ultima as a series, finding them to be mostly unplayable and difficult to take seriously, and i think garriot is a hack resistant to change, even positive change that would make his games more accessible to people other than crazy assholes who speak in faux-old english in their daily life. i find ultima underworld's controls to be clunky and its historical slowness on DOSbox has long precluded me from being able to get into it. but even i must admit that ultima underworld, and ultima as a whole, are among the most influential games ever made, which is why whenever some gaming site talks about gaming history and ignores the franchise and its influence on everything from final fantasy to bioshock, i have to wonder just how lazy they really are.
this article is a complete rewrite of an earlier entry.

Question 3
Well here I am again, trying to write something, to keep some mental clarity, and have some sort of insight about myself.  Last time I did two questions out of 3000. I also havent been too committed to this just yet, I’m a little scared as to what this may reveal about myself. So I haven’t had a really bad day since the last time I wrote which is awesome. I know some people going through tough times and it’s really hard to see and deal with sometimes. This is sounding like more of a journal entry than a blog post, so without any further delay lets get to the question:
What is the trait that you most deplore in yourself?
Okay, so I’m not going to lie, why would I? I definitely had to google what “deplore” meant. And just as I figured, deplore is a negative term. Which trait to I dislike about myself the most, in plain English.
What do I dislike the most? Oh man what a loaded question. Would I say I hate that im a little sluggish sometimes? Would I say I don’t have the most motivation? Is it the fact that im easily deterred sometimes? Or even that im short fused sometimes, and always regret it after? There are so many things to talk about my traits that I really dislike but the MOST deplorable trait that I have.. Here it goes:
The trait that I MOST deplore about myself, is the worst trait anyone could have. My mindset. When I boil any imperfections, or discrepancies in my life, it all comes down to my mindset. I’m a weak minded individual. I hate starting new diets, I never stick to them. I hate training, practicing etc, because I just want to be good at things. I always over think things. And the last thing im going to mention is that I always get sucked into the negative, the gossip, the bs, the things that people shouldn’t need to worry about.
When I do a workout -which I haven’t done in some amount of time, (lets open this can of worms) not only haven’t I been in the gym in along time but I also keep thinking to myself, that ill start getting back to my former glory, It’ll just take time etc etc. But the fact of the matter is, I don’t fucking want to, I hate the journey, I just want to be at the end- when I do a workout I think to myself, yeah, I can do 10 pushups *just an example* but ill only do 7 that’s good enough. If I decide I want to run around the block, ill find a path that’s closer to be able to get back to my place. Its so brutal, but I always think of the now, and how im scared to be uncomfortable, scared to push, scared to work, scared to be away from home, etc, etc.
The man I’d be if I didn’t have a weak mindset, didn’t have such a “give up” attitude, would be wild. My dreams when I was a kid have absolutely changed since I was 18.
18 year old mitch: I was going to college, working 20/30 hours a week, working in retail, making the most money id ever made, which at the time was laughable (250-300/week) depending on how busy I was, what kind of sales I made. I was going to school for construction engineering, I had every advantage in the world. I had a brand new mac laptop, I had money in the bank, college and books were all paid for. My big dream was to come up with design for a city, and build it in a country that didn’t have a lot of sustainability. We would use a lot of water, and solar energy, and try to become cleaner and cleaner. Of course the biggest reason I wanted to do it was because I wanted to make money, a metric fuck load. I wanted to be bill gates rich, (nothing there has changed, expect life is more realistic now). I had a car, and money to spend on drinking and going to the bars.
Life took a turn, and by life I mean I unexpectedly let myself slip further and further away from the dreams and everything I thought I wanted. Now to be fair I did it all to myself, there’s not a single part of me that blames anyone or anything else. I was young, I was rebellious, I was more interested in booze and women, and it caught up to me. I had this rebellious attitude, this know it all attitude. It led me down this path that im currently on. Which im making changes in my life. I cant say that the decisions I made back when I was 18 are still impacting my life, that wouldn’t be fair. It sent me in this direction, but it didn’t create my future, I have done that. Good or bad my life is all the sum of my collective decisions. Having my time back there are a lot of changes I would have made when I was younger, there are a lot of things that I wouldn’t change. “everything happens for a reason” and fuck, the reason is to test us, for us to learn and grow, and change and be better people. And sometimes it’s a test to see if you’ll fail to see if youre not going to be a better person. Sometimes vices get the best of people, drinking, drugs, theft, all the bad things you can imagine.
30yr old me: I have this “realistic” bordering a lot into pessimistic mindset lately. And unfortunately it does get me down, and sometimes all I want to do is listen to sad music, and wallow in self pity. Which is a little bullshit because even though im older now, I know more than I did when I was 18, so you would thing I would know what to do, how to do it etc. but the horseshit thing is, the older I get, and the more I learn, the less I realize I actually know. I’ve learned that it doesn’t matter what you make, it doesn’t matter what you do, it doesn’t matter who  you know, or you’re associated with. My mindset is the thing that lead me down all these paths. Now don’t get me wrong, sometimes I do catch fire, and am unstoppable, but those moments are few and far between.
This blog is basically me being able to look at myself and see what my biggest flaw is, what I think my biggest problem is, now, like the question asked, what do I think my biggest deploreable flaw is. It didn’t ask about all my flaws, and believe me there are a few. But mindset is the one I pick, because I know that it’s the one that leads to everything else being flawed and down-fally.
My goals for 2020, are to not let my mind make all my decisions. That sounds a little silly, but let me explain. Obviously im going to think about the decisions I make, but instead of my mind telling me “its ok to quit, what’s the worst that can happen, im going to say to myself “im here, im already in discomfort, and the little extra push, and effort will mean all the difference. I’ve had a rough go mentally for a little bit now, and I think that its time to change it up, not worry what everyone else thinks, so that I can worry about what my mind is thinking, and what I need as a person to grow, and hopefully take off.

Makes you wonder...
All my life all I ever knew was tennis until 8 years ago.
8 years ago I wanted to get into Bath University and play tennis professionally.
They wanted to put me on a tennis programme at the university along side the degree that I'd be studying. The degree I wanted to do was part of the tennis training. You basically had to do a chosen sport to do this specific degree.
Unfortunately I was unable to even begin the degree. I smashed my predicted grades and got the top marks for my diploma. This was equivalent to 3x A levels at A grade.
Unfortunately I didn't hear anything for the university. The guy who was interested in be said they were having a meeting about the chosen sports funding. Football, rugby, tennis and athletics were the ones open for dropping funding.
Unfortunately tennis was the sport to be dropped funding and then I was not accepted on the course.
Gutted weren't the word, I was physically and emotionally hurt. It took a long time to really get string with it. And even now it hurts a little bit.
Since then I've stopped playing, I do carry a little. More weight which I never wanted, I also got caught up in mistakes which I never wanted either. I've struggled to find the right career for me because that's all I felt I wanted to do, and felt like what I was born to do.
I get like these little reminders telling me that I should t give up. And they're unavoidable too.
About 4 years ago whilst working at reebok fithub in retail. I was serving a customer and they said "oh my god! You're mahala! What you doing here you still playing tennis?" I said I couldn't afford it and haven't played it since I weren't accepted into uni. I didn't say that I've struggled to find my feet since.
They asked for my manager and I wondered why. He came out and she said "this girl is a waste of talent being here, she really is something special" I was touched and I started considering starting to play again.
I tried and failed many times. I've tried to play on the lta matches and local tennis leagues and all of them have failed. The main reason is you enter and it either gets cancelled or you play one or two matches.
You need routine and practice not just a match here and there.
When I had my breakdown last year, I was saying I'm going to have one last go at tennis again. People thought I was crazy for saying that mostly my mum. She said how are you gonna fund it? How can we do it? We can't?...
It still hurts and I think that was showing.
A year and a bit later from my breakdown. I've. Managed to play 2 matches and that's it. I was stepping away from it, till I get more reminders to play again.
A week ago a lady my mum was chatting to told me to get Into coaching. Do a level 3. I weren't even sure about coaching. Because Id only ever want to play, not coach.
Today I played short tennis. I get to go to these activities as part of my recovery on my mental health. Last year I missed out because of really bad anxiety attacks. But I've almost finished my cognitive behavioural therapy sessions so I can deal with stress and anxiety and depression so much better!
I'm thankful for the early intervention psychosis team. They have been a real gem in my recovery. Only problem is, I always want to achieve. Not matter what. If I'm not moving forward I feel I'm not moving at all.
Today I had short tennis as part as the Charlton activities I do. Chatlron athletic football club sponsor the programme to help the people like me build up their confidence.
I've been fortunate to be part of this programme. I have a fantastic team of people and support surrounding me.
Anyways back to the tennis. We were put into teams of 3 today. To start with our formation was a bit off. So we lost our first match. We won the rest and become the champions of the day.
The guys at Charlton filmed me a few times hitting shots etc. Everyone commented how well I played and all asked about whether I've played before.
I was offered a lift home by one of the care workers for the early intervention psychosis team. He's new I didn't recognise him before.
Funny enough he was telling me about how his son plays tennis and how he thought of getting him involved over here in the UK. (he's from zimbabwe) I told him the struggles I had and all that. Basically what I've written on here.
In the past week I've had St least 5-6 people tell me I shouldn't stop playing. Problem is, I know if I play people will say I shouldn't give up or how good I am.
Don't know why but I know It'll hurt me. Being reminded of my dreams and that I shouldn't give up.
I would take an offer in a heartbeat if it ever comes up. Truth is I'm getting older now and times laying very short. If it's gonna happen it needs to happen soon.
My only other option I've considered is joining the army which I've always considered as a career and play tennis and maybe snowboarding through there.
Just feels awful knowing that your gut instict and intuition and maybe even spirit guides are all encourages me to do it.
Yet, life gets in the way. When I had my breakdown I told all my pupils I was giving up teaching people to drive and going for it one last time with my tennis.
Just saying that gives me goosebumps. Will I get there? How will it happen if it does? Do I need to just trust the process?...
I've always dreamed of being a tennis player and quite honestly I get visions of me having athletic body, no money worries and playing tennis for a living. Of course its hard... If it was easy everyone would be doing it.
Think I'm being reminded of my true life purpose. Only my human self keeps being skeptical of all this. Need to let go of that I think.
It truly helps me right out all this. Weirdly I feel like eyes are peering on these words I type. I've been told before my life could be a movie. What if that actually happens and the words I'm typing now become I to a movie. #whoknewmoment
I'm now just staring at the screen. Like I've just emptied my whole mind out. Just watching the blinker blink on the screen. But still wondering what my future holds. I'm scared, focused, nervous and a little bit confused.
The army career path comes to mind. To not stray from that path. People have become professional athletes and sports stars from the army's support. Reminding myself now of Kelly Holmes as she was a PTI in the army. Then took the career in running which took off like a storm.
I watched a few of my old tennis videos, looking back on myself almost wishing I could coach that younger marli into what I know now. But again somethings reminding me It's never too late. It's not that I want the fame and become famous. I just want TO LIVE MY PURPOSE (capitals just locked on there without me even really attempting to.)
I do feel like someone is trying to communicate with me from the other side right now. I spoke about that in my last post. I want to help people I do, but not in the way of teaching them skills. Give people purpose and tell them to go for their dreams. But I've gotta get there first so people can listen.
I want to make it, I really do. Without pursuing it I feel dead. And that's quite scary feeling.
If my guides are looking down upon me now. Please guide me, please show me the path of the purpose I am meant to live. I want to also give back to my parents. That's almost my first number one thing I'd do.
Give back to my parents give them the life of freedom they deserve. Help my family first then give back and fund a charity. Probably Paul walkers reach out world wide foundation. They hell the world in crisis times.
Argh I feel sick right now. Don't even know why. Probably digesting all this... This that I can't even find the words to describe what it is. Then the word "purpose" just popped into my head.
I'm getting a ringing sound in my ears. Mostly my left... Is someone here? Visiting me?...
Please help me find my life purpose. I will continue to look for signs and messages from the guides.
Till then, see you on the next one.

Ok lets say you owned like a 90 honda accord or something, and you had cheap insurance for it. since its also an economic car, you use it most of the time you drive. but if you owned two other cars, such as a big v8 4x4 or a sports car v6 would you need to have separate insurance for those? or are you able to drive anything you own since you have insurance? does it matter as long as you dont get into any accidents?""

My mother needs health insurance but...?
Ok, so my mom is extremely sick. Her stomach/genital areas are usually in very big pain, which makes her have trouble walking to the bathroom, and even then she said using the bathroom is even more painful. She sometimes has trouble breathing so she drags her feet (because she can't walk too well now) and go outside. The pain goes away after she takes some pain stopping pills, but they do come back. Now, she does not have health insurance, and neither do I actually. I don't think any health insurance company would actually take her cuz her health is so poor. What are my options here? We're not rich, so I don't think a direct scan of her body and (possible) surgery is a good idea (so expensive :( ). PS. I live in Southern California.""

Which Health Insurance Benefits do I choose?
I am finally eligible for health benefits at work. My wife has recently decided to attend school, so therefore I will have to include her in my benefits. With so many to choose from, I wanted to find out options. To skip the PPO, since it's overpriced at my job, I will list several I am considering. First, we are both healthy couple, we are on our early 30s, and planning on having kids, so maternity has to include. My work offers AETNA California Small Business group plan. Here are the following I am considering.... 1. HEALTH SAVINGS ACCOUNT (HSA) - Really considering due to the tax advantage, but you have to select a high deductible heath plan (HDHA). We have HSA $3000 deductible, HSA $2500, HSA $2000, and HSA $3300. 2. We also have HMO with co-pays ranging from $10 to $50 3. Aetna Value Network (AVN) HMO with copays $10 to $50 With so many selection, my head is starting to spin. So if someone can enlighten me the deductible they chose if you are planning to have kids and also saving tips on selecting the health benefits that would work for a couple. How do we get insurance companies to reduce medical insurance premiums to employers?
Let's face it, here in the U.S. the medical insurance premiums for group health coverage is rising faster than inflation. As a result, a lot of companies are either reducing the levels of coverage in order to offset the cost of insurance, increasing the deductible, and or increasing the cost to the employees for the insurance premiums. The problem is that insurance companies have no incentive to reduce insurance premiums. They continue to get record profits and this issue is out of control. Car Insurance Question?
I came to north Carolina at the beginning of August from FL to stay with my aunt while I got my finances in order and she recovered from her back surgery. I plan to stay here until a bit after the new year. When I moved, I arranged to have my mail forwarded while i am here. Also around this time, I started searching for a new insurance provider because my rate had gone up with geico. I decided on progressive. When signing up for progressive, I signed up with my Florida drivers license number and my new nc mailing address. A couple of months later I received a letter from the state of Florida saying that they were notified my geico insurance policy was cancelled and to provide new proof of coverage. I went online and provided the information but apparently made an error when selecting the insurance company name. I accidentally selected protective insurance company instead of progressive. I was made aware of this error when I received a license suspension letter yesterday. Since then I have notified the state of Florida Of the error. I then received notice that my insurance was still not acceptable because Florida requires that if I have a florida registration, i must have a Florida policy. I called my insurance who confirmed that although they provide Florida coverage, I was under a nc policy even though I provided them with a Florida drivers license number since my mailing address was currently nc. I have had no lapse in coverage, but my insurance company cannot switch it back to florida until I am living there again at the beginning of the new year and can provide a valid address of where I will be living. I do not know where I will be living when I get back yet because I will have to find a new place to move into. Does anyone have any advice as to what to do in this situation? When I first moved to FL and transferred my tags, it cost me almost 500 dollars, so if i transfer them to NC for the time being, i will then have to pay 500 dollars again once I go back to FL""

Is a subaru wrx a good car for an 18 year old?
I'm 18 and I'm thinking about buying a wrx. It has 150000 miles with maintenance history and was run on high octane gas... seems to be mechanically taken care of. It needs a new paint job but I don't mind the project. Is it hard to drive this car on 5spd for people who have minimum manual experience? (i can drive a manual but I haven't had much practice) I plan on taking care of it and running it easy. How much does insurance increase if there's a lein in the car? Is it difficult to transfer leins? Car has 6600 left on lein and its a 2003.

I'm just wondering why only her name is listed as driving the truck. What would happen if he got into an accident with it? I'm sending the papers to his hotel so he can look them over and call the company but in the meantime I am curious!!!

What is life insurance for?
I know car insurance means the government pays the money for your repairs if you have an accident so you don't have to reach into your own account, same with medical insurance in all its forms (dental, etc), but I wonder what life insurance is for. I guess it serves as an inheritance for the relatives (via birth, marriage) of the deceased in the event that person dies and the survivors collect a lot of debt in terms of having to pay for funeral services and their house notes and bills. I don't know. I'm just guessing. I see lots of insurance TV commericals. I'm 24 so I was just a little curious. It seems to me like life insurance advertising is mostly directed toward spouses and parents. That further does make me feel life insurance is kind of an inheritance from the government in case someone dies with dependents so those other relatives under the care of the deceased have money to eat and clothe.""

I was wondering if my stepdad can just open a new insurance & put me as one of the drivers. Would it be a difference on the paymets ? I was in a car accident recently. there was not really any damage to either vehicle, I rear ended someone. the police report was filed and the police told me that the person I rear ended wants to claim that she has had injury to her back (which is ridiculous because we were only going 5 mph). There is no way I could have really hurt her, plus she was walking around fine when the report was being filed. What can she get from me and how much can she get? I think I'm going to be retaining a lawyer for this. I'm just really worried that the BS medical thing she is claiming might end up costing thousands and I can't afford to pay that much. thanks.""

The Five Enemies of Your Financial Success
The path to financial success is actually surprisingly simple. Spend less than you earn. Do something sensible with the difference. Thats it. If you do that each month, each year, each decade, youll have quite a lot of financial success. Debt will melt away. Retirement savings will go up, up, and away. If its that simple, then why doesnt everyone do it? If its that simple, then why are 78% of Americans living paycheck to paycheck? The reason is simple: Although the path is incredibly straightforward, there are many enemies along the way that will knock you off of that path. They pop up constantly, in different forms and in different numbers, and if youre not ready to handle them, you will fall right off the path to financial success. These enemies come in many, many different flavors, but they can mostly be boiled down to five groups, with different tactics for handling each one. Enemy #1: Bad Habits In other words, you have bad day-to-day routines in your life, ones that add up to a bunch of unnecessary expense. Those bad routines by themselves wont entirely disrupt your progress, but they will slow you down and they will make it easier for other enemies to knock you off the path. These bad habits and bad routines wear many faces. They take the form of your monthly bills some are overinflated (like your energy bill), while others are unnecessary (like your cable bill). They take the form of ordinary expenses that you incur multiple times a month without really thinking about it, like eating out for lunch or hitting the coffee shop or buying convenience foods at the grocery store or skipping over the store brands that youve never tried in order to use the more expensive name brands. People are creatures of habit. Once you firmly establish a routine, youll probably stick with it for a very long time, usually until something disrupts that habit. Disrupting a habit without some big life change (like moving) is hard. Here are a few tactics for defeating this enemy. Keep track of where every dollar goes. At the end of each month, sit down and go through your bank statements and credit card statements and identify what exactly each and every purchase was for. Was it a sensible purchase? Did it add real value to your life? Can you even remember what it was for? (Hint: If you cant remember, it was probably a bad purchase.) Look for patterns in what youre observing, especially in the less worthwhile expenses. Are the bad expenses popping up regularly in certain locations? On certain websites? Those are bad habits that you should be breaking. Reconsider every single regular expense; if it repeats, particularly once a month (like a monthly bill) or more, carefully re-evaluate it. If a specific expense is repeating in your life, like a monthly bill or a thrice-weekly stop at a coffee shop or a once-weekly stop at a hobby shop, ask yourself seriously whether that expense needs to continue and, if so, whether or not it can be cut in some fashion. Cut down most of those expenses to the bare minimum, then build them back up as needed. Once youve identified a bunch of regular expenses, its a good idea to trim them to the bare minimum and then, if you find that this isnt working for you, restore just the expenses youre missing. Try switching all of your regular purchases to store brands, for example, and then only switch back if the store brand doesnt work. Try making cold brew coffee at home in the fridge (its easy and cheap) and then switch back to the coffee shop if youve tried it a bunch of times and cant make good coffee (I really doubt this will happen). Enemy #2: Bad Advice (from Everywhere) When people think of advice, they tend to think of themselves asking for help or looking for help on something that troubles them in life and then finding someone they trust to give them an answer. Typically, thats good advice but thats not what were talking about here. Were talking about bad advice. Were talking about advice or suggestions that have no real consideration of your actual life, your actual wants and desires and goals. Were talking about suggestions shared in the media for products you need (but dont actually need). Were talking about lifestyle suggestions that have nothing to do with your actual wants or desires or life. Were talking about marketing ideas that are far more about selling a product than about improving your life. Bad advice is everywhere. Its on television. Its on the internet. Its on social media. It can come from the mouth of your best friend or from an overheard conversation on the street. How can you defeat the enemy of bad advice? Cut down on your media diet. Spend less time watching television. Spend less time online. Spend less time on social media. Replace that with actually doing things. Go on a hike. Make a great meal. Read a book. Learn a new skill. Have a party. Start a garden. Do something anything just cut down on your media intake. Find ways to spend time with friends that dont involve spending money. If youre going to do something social, make sure that its not something oriented toward spending money or talking about products or things you want. Avoid retail therapy. Do things at each others homes or at a free public location like a park. Look for multiple sources of advice, including experts, before you make a financial move. Whenever youre considering making a financial move or looking for strategies for improving your situation, look for a number of different sources before making a major move. Dont just trust the word of the salesperson or agent, and dont just trust the word of a single article in a major publication. Look around for several sources of advice and go with what they suggest as a whole. One single point of advice might be wrong; a bunch of different points of advice, mostly in alignment with each other, are much more likely to be right. Enemy #3: Temptation Were all tempted in our daily lives. Were tempted to be lazy. Were tempted by treats and perks and pleasures. Were tempted by the good thing we can have right now. The catch, of course, is that temptations are distracting. They grab our focus and pull us away from the big picture. They demand fulfillment right now without any real concern about what might come later. Spontaneity can sometimes be fun, sure, but when spontaneity drains away lots of resources and cuts off future plans, it becomes a problem. When giving into temptations means giving up on big plans and goals and dreams, its usually a bad choice, even if it seems really really desirable in the here and now. How can you tackle temptation? Practice the 10-second rule. The 10-second rule is a wonderful little trick you can practice any time youre about to make a purchase of any kind or about to put something in your shopping cart. All you have to do is pause for 10 seconds, and during those 10 seconds consider reasons why you shouldnt buy this item. Dont think about why you should buy it, but why you shouldnt. Do you really need it? Could you get it cheaper elsewhere? Is there a better option for your needs? Couldnt this wait until later? Most of the time, non-essential purchases will go right back on the shelf. Practice the 30-day rule, too. This is a nice supplement to the 10-second rule above, and it pertains very nicely to nonessential purchases of any significant magnitude (for me, the minimum level is the price of a book, about $10). If you have the desire to buy a nonessential item, simply give it 30 days to rest. In 30 days, consider the item again do you still want it? If so, then start bargain hunting for it, and you can do it patiently because youve already observed you dont need it right away. If not, then just forget about it. I find that about 90% of my wants just go away if I apply this 30-day rule to it. Delete your credit card number from online accounts, and dont keep your account login information saved. One very easy way to give into temptation before having a chance to think about it is to simply order things with just a click or two online without having to enter payment information. Theres nothing wrong with buying online, but when you can go from impulse to ordered item in just a few seconds, its really easy to just let temptation run the show. For example, I often run into this with Kindle books I know very well that I order more than I should, and this depletes my monthly hobby spending more quickly than Id like. The simple step of removing credit card and account information in as many places as I can keeps me from a lot of little impulsive purchases. Enemy #4: Bad Perspective Human beings have a few psychological quirks that served us very well in life up until roughly the industrial revolution, but dont serve us particularly well today. One of those quirks serves as a giant enemy on the road to financial success, and thats our natural tendency to focus strongly on the short-term perspective rather than the long-term perspective. We put far more weight on today and this week than we do on next year and the rest of our lives. Sure, were able to think about and consciously plan for our future, but its often very nebulous thinking and planning. Most of the time, we play it by ear, and even when we have the best of intentions, short-term objectives and desires will trump long-term objectives and desires unless were very diligent about focusing on the long-term perspective with our thinking. How is that bad? If we focus on the short term as a top priority rather than the long term, it becomes so much harder to save for future goals like retirement. The benefits of saving for retirement are incredibly obvious and important, but because its a long-term goal, the average person doesnt do it very well. A large portion of Americans have nothing saved for retirement, and among those who do, many just have a trivial amount thats often just what their employers automatically put aside for them. Were bad at long-term thinking in the moment. How can we change that? Consider your spending choices from a five-year perspective. If youre about to spend money, ask yourself whether, five years from now, you would consider that expenditure to be a worthwhile one. Will your future self think that this purchase was really worthwhile at all? If your future self would think of this purchase as not a very good use of money, then you should strongly consider leaning against it. What Ive found is that this line of thinking tends to push me toward minimal spending on myself, though it does encourage social spending and self-improvement spending. I often pair this thinking with time use, something which Ill get back to in a few paragraphs. Consider what a series of unfortunate events does to your life, and come up with a realistic plan for handling most of that impact. What exactly happens to you if you lose your job and your car breaks down on the same day? How do you handle that? What if youre suddenly diagnosed with a serious illness at the same time that your oldest child moves back in with you? How do you handle those kinds of extreme events? If you dont have an answer that will help you handle a large portion of the impact, then you need to be planning ahead for that impact. Start a big, healthy emergency fund, for starters, and start taking steps to strongly reinforce your career. You should automate those plans by, for example, setting up automatic transfers from your checking to your savings account (for an emergency fund) and scheduling and blocking off time for career improvement. Make it as easy as you possibly can to keep moving forward with those plans. Consider how you spend your time in a given week and ask yourself if theres not a more personally fulfilling and worthwhile way to spend that time. How much of your time is just wasted in a way that you cant even really identify? How much of it is wasted on things that provide no long-term value and little short-term value (like aimless social media or web surfing or watching unplanned television)? That time is just lost, with no purpose. Start finding ways to cut that lost time, and start using that time for things that will provide value to you now and over the long term of your life. Learn things. Exercise. Get in better shape. Take on tasks that will save you time later, like preparing meals in advance. Enemy #5: Lack of Knowledge One final obstacle that stands in the way of financial success is simple lack of knowledge. You might be able to identify that theres a financial problem in your life, but you really dont know how to fix it or how to ensure that it doesnt happen again. Usually, financial solutions are pretty simple, but if youve never been exposed to the solution to your problem, solving the problem can feel like a tremendous obstacle. This is the value of education it can take an unanswered question that seems incredibly difficult and complex and break it down into something simple that you can understand and handle and put into action. Heres how to do just that. Read personal finance books and independent personal finance sites. If youre struggling with personal finance as a whole or dont understand broad topics such as investing or debt repayment, the best approach is to grab a personal finance book from the library and dig in. If you thrive on seeing those solutions through the filter of a persons real life, then an independent personal finance blog (like this one) is a great additional tool. Both can teach you what you need to know the books provide the core knowledge and the blogs provide the examples and relatability. If you hear about a financial topic that you dont understand, take the time to understand it and integrate it into what you already know. So often, people will start learning about a personal finance topic, understand 75% of it, and then get lost on the other 25%. Rather than stopping right there and fixing that deficit, they nod and move on. Dont do that. Whenever you come across a point or a subtopic that you dont understand, stop and learn more about it. Dont come back to the bigger topic unless you understand the specific point thats being made. Why? Its often the case that later points build upon and rely upon earlier ones, so if you dont understand the earlier ones, you almost never understand the later ones. Plus, its much easier to stop and learn about a point when you first encounter it, because learning about that single point when you first find it is likely to be quite easy in comparison to trying to figure out where you went wrong later on. Dont inherently trust the words of an advisor; do the research and figure things out on your own. You should never, ever make major financial decisions based on the advice or ideas of a single person, whether its a book or a blog or a financial advisor. Dont take one persons word for it if its a major decision that will have big ramifications in your life. Before making a choice, consult other sources. Verify what a website is saying by looking at other websites and at books. Verify what an advisor is saying by looking at websites and books. Verify what youve learned from books with other sources of information. Dont just rely on one source (and, yes, that includes The Simple Dollar). Final Thoughts: Fighting the Battle The real challenge of personal finance success in the modern world isnt following the path to success, which is easy, but in fighting the many different enemies that block your path and force you off of it. It is those who overcome those enemies and keep on the path that find financial security and, eventually, financial independence. You wont be successful in every battle no one is. However, if you manage to turn a few losses into wins, youll find yourself moving faster and faster down the path, with more confidence and momentum than ever before, and that alone will go a long way toward bringing you the success you desire. This is your journey. There are many who stand in your way. Are you ready to take them on? Related Articles: https://www.thesimpledollar.com/the-five-enemies-of-your-financial-success/

There are fewer names in the Halloween industry more iconic than Ben Cooper, the costume brand first launched eight decades ago by the brothers Ben and Nat Cooper, who broke new ground in their innovative use of licensed pop culture icons from the likes of Disney and Star Wars. They helped define what Halloween is in America for multiple generations who proudly wore their plastic masks and vinyl smocks, and now Ben Cooper is back.
In Part 1 of our extended chat with Nat Cooper’s son Ira Cooper and author Jon James Miller, we discussed the rise of Ben Cooper Incorporated, becoming the biggest Halloween market shareholder by the late ‘70s after successfully bridging the gap from theatrical costuming to everyday dress up made affordable enough for everyday people. They paved the way for the pop culture-influenced cosplay culture of today.
The Cooper brothers were also pioneers in licensing some the earliest Disney properties, being among the first in the world to give kids a likeness of Mickey Mouse or Cinderella that they could find at their local drug store. By the 1980s, they were the Kings of Halloween, but the country was changing, as the pop culture icons they helped make famous were now becoming more readily available through all kinds of new products, and grownups began to celebrate the holiday more than ever.
In this third and final installment of our interview, the story resumes a quarter-century after Ben Cooper Costumes went bankrupt and was ultimately sold in 1991.
Celebrating its 80th anniversary this year, the name and the brand are looking to make a comeback, for all kinds of vintage-cool new items that honor Ben and Nat in their rightful place in Halloween history.
Read on for Part 3 of our interview with Ira Cooper and Jon James Miller!
Ben Cooper ‘Star Wars’ costumes ad.
Read Part 1: The Rise of Ben Cooper
Read Part 2: The Reign of Ben Cooper
Part 3: The Return of Ben Cooper
HDN – If they were here now, what do you think Ben and Nat Cooper would think of Halloween and costuming and just how the industry is today? Do you think they would feel a little pride or ownership over that, or do you think they would be more weirded out by it?
IRA – There would be no ego around it at all. They were very practical people who did not lord their position over anybody. They did one interview, with People Magazine, and never did another with anybody.
Nat kept himself out of the limelight. He worked 10 years on (signing) Sesame Street, and you could barely get him to take credit for getting the license. The head of licensing for Sesame Street took me aside after dinner at The Plaza in New York and he said, ‘Your father is the most tenacious businessman I’ve ever met.’ That’s a tremendous statement to make.
They were just so private that way. They didn’t decorate their houses with anything. I think Dad had a couple of Disney (film animation) cells at home, but nothing major. He had absolutely nothing that indicated Halloween. If there was art on the wall, it was art from other people.
Although they talked about it and they lived the business, they didn’t identify with it in that way. So I think they would just think it’s crazy where it went.
Nat always said that people are missing the low end of the market. There is always going to be X-number of millions of dollars in low priced items for people who cannot afford this other stuff. I think they would notice that still is not being served. The retailers don’t want to devote the space.
Lady Vampire mask by Ben Cooper.
JON – I think they’d be more flattered about cosplay.
IRA – They’d be mesmerized by it.
JON – I think in as much as they pioneered play suits for everyday wear, that was done in the ‘50s, so that was way ahead of anybody else as far as the cosplay lifestyle today where people can dress up every day.
IRA – I don’t think they foresaw adults running around identifying with superheroes. And that’s the essence that I get from cosplay, that it’s this psychological identity with it.
JON – I think the brothers Cooper would take a little satisfaction in the fact that Halloween is an $8.6 billion industry.  And it’s inflation-proof on top of that.
IRA – And it always was. Even in the worst recession years, Halloween did not lack growth. You could always measure how good the Halloween was going to be at the end of the season by looking at the candy sales in the beginning. If candy and party goods were good, they knew people were going to be buying those costumes eventually. Some years were very late sales and we’d see the stuff moving off the shelves in the last seven days, and other years it moved off in the last 15 days of what was initially only a 30-day selling period. Now the selling period is 60 days or more.
Rubber Dracula mask by Ben Cooper.
HDN – So after the ‘90s the Ben Cooper brand was dormant for 25 years. What can you tell me about the re-launch and what’s going on now?
IRA – I’ll leave that one with Jon.
JON – I always loved Ben Cooper growing up. And I kind of forgot about it for a decade or two. Then, I’m a writer too and I was doing some research, and one of my editors said, ‘Why don’t you do something about Halloween?’ It kind of went off in my head that I hadn’t heard about Ben Cooper for a long time. And then I realized there really isn’t anything online about them.
So I set about trying to find a Cooper. That took me months and months. I still consider it a minor miracle that the Cooper I did find was Ira. He’s the nicest guy on the planet. He took mercy on me and kind of told me the family story.
That’s really one of the unsung heroes of this whole story; how a Jewish immigrant family got their start and realized the American dream by taking over Halloween.
They are exceedingly modest, the Coopers are, especially Ira. What I bring to it is that I can see how people would be really interested in this story. It’s never been told before.
Short of making Halloween costumes again, which I don’t see in Ben Cooper’s near future, what I do see is doing collectibles and telling that story, because it’s really a pop culture phenomenon in and of itself.
They lived off pop culture for 50 years, and then they became it, because of their stature in the Halloween industry.
So Ira and I really hit it off, and we’re working on a book about Ben Cooper, the official history.
HDN – Oh, cool. That’s going to be great.
Ben Cooper ‘Star Wars’ 40th anniversary shirt.
JON – We’re very slowly rolling out a couple collectibles at BenCooperCostumes.com, starting with a 40th anniversary Star Wars t-shirt (pictured above), and we’ve got a couple of other things that are in the pipeline.
What I love about Ben Cooper is they kind of touched on everything in their time in the limelight. So you have super awesome Disney, Marvel, DC, Star Wars, basically any pop culture icon you can think of had its own costume back in the day. But what I love about the costumes especially is they actually are kind of folk art.
You can still buy a costume fairly cheaply online, and it brings you right back when you open that box and see that mask right in front of the costume. You’re teleported right back to your childhood. That kind of nostalgia is hard to come by these days.
And a lot of the costumes I buy, because I’m a collector too, they’re in really good condition. Some of them are haggered and ripped and stuff, but some of them are like they just came off the line at the Cooper factory. It’s largely luck to get one in that kind of condition, but I think Ben Cooper costumes are the only collectible that it’s cool if it’s got chocolate all over it when you get it, because somebody loved it.
HDN – When is the book coming out?
JON – We’re estimating it’s going to be out in time for (San Diego) Comic-Con next year. So we’ll launch it, and then that obviously leads into the Halloween 2018 market. We’re hopeful that the book itself is going to be a bit of a collectible. We’d like to capture as many Ben Cooper Halloween costume images as possible.
HDN – That sounds so cool. I’m sure it will be a collectible in its own right. So costumes are not part of the plan right now?
IRA – I think we’re going to tell the story of Ben Cooper, but I don’t think it’s going to be an emerging area for youngsters. I think there’s a certain level of contemporary young adults who recognize that the art is nostalgic, and recognize the vibrancy of it, and we’re going to see some classic Ben Cooper images on some fashion items and home décor. These are things we have in the works.
But right now it’s time to tell the story, and give Ben and Nat their due.
Following that initial release of the Star Wars 40th anniversary Ben Cooper t-shirt earlier this year, the new Ben Cooper has also since unveiled a number of other retro flavored items, including collectible pins, apparel, and additional shirts. You can find out more about these and upcoming releases at the official Ben Cooper Facebook page and on Instagram. Ben Cooper is also the subject of a great new exhibit showing from Sept. 9 through Halloween at the Mystic Museum in Burbank, CA, featuring never-before-seen prototypes, archive photos, original art, masks, and more.
If you have stories or photos of you and your Ben Cooper costumes, be sure to share in the comments below!

Android O is supposed to make Android updates
Google is all over again trying to resolve the problem of gradual Android updates, and this time, the employer says it has an answer that’ll make it “less complicated, quicker, and less pricey for producers” to update their telephones to new versions of Android.
The solution is a feature inside of Android O referred to as “Project Treble,” which is supposed to allow manufacturers replace their telephones without having to make a ton of software changes first.
Google has basically split apart its own work on Android from the
Work that its hardware partners do on Android to ensure it really works with their ultra-modern chips. If Treble works like Google says it does, corporations like Samsung and Motorola may be able to issue Android updates without waiting for a chip associate, like Qualcomm, to first send along software program updates.
It’s not clear if this gets rid of all hurdles or if manufacturers will still update Android’s code to make certain that functions specific to their smartphone are running. But it actually appears like one of the most concrete matters Google has completed to address the problem of Android fragmentation.
While the fragmentation scenario has gotten higher through the years, it, in reality, hasn’t gone away: the ultra-modern version of Android, Nougat, has been out for more than eight months and remains on handiest 7 percent of Android phones. Android Jelly Bean, which turned into succeeded nearly 4 years ago, is on more gadgets than that.
Google has attempted to speed up Android updates in the beyond without a good deal success, so this is nevertheless very a good deal something we should be patient on. And possibly extra importantly, there’s nonetheless one huge hurdle: this option arrives in Android O, and who is aware of when any current telephones get updated to the brand new OS.
We’ll pay attention greater about Treble at Google’s I/O conference next week. The business enterprise must be talking more about Android O there, too, although the operating gadget probably received see a full release till later in the year.
Android Testing Frameworks
To correctly conduct cell checking out, the specialists can use unique frameworks each for iOS and Android trying out. These frameworks provide the rapid and precise test of the cell product. Not it’s miles the time to check Robotium, a framework for Android-base applications.
The factor is that the capacities of standard frameworks for Android are by some means confined:
they do now not help more than one capabilities, the check scripts are accomplished instead gradual, the shape of taking a look at cases is complex and it is difficult to release them. Robotium does no longer have such problems. It is an open-source framework. It could be very suitable for developers as they are able to layout the automatic GUI check scripts, functional and popularity test eventualities for more than one operations.
What Are the Main Features of Robotium?

How Are Big Retailers Supposed To Protect Their Brands When They’re Closing 100s Of Stores?
The retail quarter simply cannot appear to get its act together, they are trying to make us all dependable clients after which spam our inboxes to hell. They faux to care, however, supply us, lousy provider, even as of their shops, this is if we are able to even locate a person to assist us. They offer cut-price coupons but we can not discover it while we go shopping, Free Rain Check, they say, properly, it really is no longer correct enough. Then when they, in the end, do lower some expenses on their cheaply made Chinese imports, we discover it’s only because they’re last their doors and promoting their “dependable purchaser statistics” to a competitor without our permission and the method starts of evolved all once more – whilst will those box shops study – maybe whilst they’re all long past?
The USA Today had an interesting and horrifying article addressing the future of brick and mortar retailing titled; “Macy’s reducing 6,2 hundred jobs, identifies 68 shops in order to be last,” published on January 4, 2017, which said;
“Retail icon Macy’s says in a launch that it’s making “adjustments to the manner shops are operated and decreasing discipline infrastructure given the reduced store sales and evolving purchase behavior.” The organization expects to register expenses of approximately $250 million in the fourth area of 2016 that were now not formerly blanketed in its earnings guidance.”
If you’ll consider Macy’s closed a hundred stores lower back in past due August/September of 2016.
Maybe it is greater of a matter or shielding shareholder’s equity and quarterly income. There turned into a thrilling article in Reuters on January 20, 2017, titled; “U.S. Branch stores regular profitability boat at the same time as income slide,” written through Nandita Bose and Siddharth Cavale (Chicago Correspondents) which stated: “U.S. Branch store chains, hit through slowing sales for extra than years, have used layoffs, shop closings and cutbacks to maintain one factor of balance: income margins.”
Sure, I get that, they want to make extra money, greater income, rent fewer human beings and paintings them part-time to avoid expensive out-of-control ObamaCare mandates. And nevertheless, I realize that the Retailing Industry hardly needs some other apologetic for his or her conduct and trampling of their purchaser base, in any case, they’ve their personal propaganda and PR groups to regulate the minds of their mindless masses with their loyal patron mass data.
If matters do not alternate in the retail zone, then the likes of Amazon goes to eat their lunch and then deliver a substitute through a web sandwich order introduced via drone. And believe me, it is already going on – think on this.
Why Google’s Hummingbird Updates Are Bad News for Cookie Cutter Webmasters
Today, the playing field for online marketing is a long way from being a stage. A small or medium-sized business has little or no finances for getting advertisement and pay according to click promotion, they are frequently left behind large companies with allotted budgets and advertising and marketing departments. They once in a while invest into an internet site, however, see no gain from it, and give up on getting customers from the internet. In different instances, they get an email from an “SEO professional” firm telling them that their website desires to program. They pay a low rate for development, but – as the modifications are executed the use of old software program producing automated, inappropriate links – this will now not deliver effects, both.
The opportunity for small companies to improve their website is to interact with a local marketing expert, understanding the rules and the dreams and necessities of the enterprise.
Hummingbird Search Engine Update is about Relevance
Hummingbird, the name – in step with Google – refers to an algorithm this is speedy and unique. This manner that the more applicable the website online is to search queries the better it will rank in search engines. However, it is also important to be aware that the agency considers person engagement and social media weight as one of the major ranking factors. This method that seeking to rank for “buy an automobile” will now not be feasible, nor could be clever. Instead, supplying product and provider names, descriptions, to slender the outcomes and seem more relevant is the way ahead for agencies’ online advertising approach.
How Small Businesses Can Benefit from Google Algorithm Updates
The Hummingbird update is right information for small and medium-sized organizations. Instead of counting on a software program, they could create an income funnel this is relevant to the needs and expectancies in their local marketplace and target their clients higher. The online advertising and promotion gambling subject have just been leveled, and it is less difficult to rank on the first web page with applicable and unique content material than ever before.
