asdfgh yeah polls are not going to give you an accurate view of fandom unless they're hosted by a centralized website and even then, only for that community. Sample bias baby!
The anonymity is actually not too big a problem in certain circles of study like the humanities. There's been a lot of discussion over stuff like gaining informed consent and ethics and privacy which is a super thorny issue btw, which with the pandemic has become even more a Thing To Discuss, but basically the idea is your online identity is still basically a facet of you. Sure, it might not be the same as your IRL persona but in the same way your work identity might be different to your home persona or in-polite-company persona and that performance as shaped by space and relationships is kind of a thing a researcher is already aware they're supposed to navigate. Usernames can function just as much a performance of identity and socialization as IRL or legal names.
But this is less hard stats and more qualitative data through stuff like participatory observation and interviews. The thought of trying to get any hard stats about fandom or anything online without the aid of a larger organization gives me a headache. I'd probably narrow it down to the larger fandoms, and then the major social groups within those to push my survey. And then choose some small fandoms and more sidelined social groups do the same to them. And then make sure the data from these samples are weighted correctly. And that would only give me a rough projection with no way to tell how the canon itself each fandom is based around shaped the demographics. Idk, I'd have to refine the methodology and even then there'd be a high percentage of error since it would give me, at best, a vague guess in some trends.
--
What I would do if I were an academic who wanted to study this and I had tenure and freedom to do anything I liked (so basically zero actual academics who work on fandom) would be this:
Define my population of interest as fanfic writers who write in English.
Focus on the "big three" of FFN, AO3, and Wattpad because their scale (and the minute scale of anything else in comparison) means that taken together, they likely do represent fanfic writers overall pretty well. (Obviously, if I were looking at all languages, I'd have to look at, say, Ficbook, which is smaller than the big three but still pretty huge.) It might also be necessary to look at Quotev. I'm not sure how big it is and how much the population overlaps with Wattpad. That would require investigation.
Also look at FIMFiction and Space Battles for comparison (as spaces that are as opposite of AO3 and Wattpad as fic spaces get), though AFAIK, these are pretty small in comparison.
Collect extant fandom survey data for comparison. That means the AO3 Census, that FFN research blog from 2010, r/Fanfiction's periodic demographic surveys, etc.
Do a big survey distributed through tumblr and twitter and reddit, etc. This survey would include questions about where you found the survey and which sites you use in addition to whatever else I was interested in.
But also, and this is key, I would randomly sample the big three (four?) to find random user accounts. I would look at the profiles of those accounts and either try to contact them for survey participation in a second survey or gather data directly from them/places they link to or both. Aside from that FFN research where they looked at profile pages, I haven't really seen attempts to randomize the sample like this. Nobody tries it because it's a pain in the ass.
Issues you'd face:
no PM function on AO3
very few filled-out profiles on AO3
filled out profiles being non-random (i.e. disproportionately power users or long-time fandom people, not new n00bs, regardless of site)
low response rate even if you're able to contact people
lack of demographic and other data on most profiles on most sites (though you can often tell gender or pronouns)
people perceiving this as spam or intrusive
I would also do a comparison of archive content. This is easier to randomly sample than users are, so comparing overall archive shipping stats to what survey respondents say they like could give one insight into how well the sample of users represents the archive... or it could point to gaps between what people think of themselves as doing and what they actually do. Same for other ways of looking at content: fandom, rating, etc.
Obviously, this too would require refining, but at least trying to add these other two elements would be far more interesting than the samey voluntary surveys distributed through a couple of people's LJ flists or twitter followers that we get now.

pirate king (52) || atz
“We’ve sailed from Grand Iguana, through the windward passage and we’re now at the Cayman Islands.” Hongjoong traces a line on the map in front of you on the table, and your eyes instinctively follow his finger to see three small islands off the southern coast of Cuba. “The two eastern islands have established Royal Navy towns, so I doubt they would choose those places as negotiation points.”
“So here?” Yeosang taps a spot on the aged vellum, a blob of ink smaller than his fingertip floating beside to near identical, smaller islands. Mingi glances over his captain’s shoulder, chewing on his lower lip nervously as he considers the location in his mind.
“Commander Kang may be a bastard, but he does his job right. He wouldn’t want any of the townspeople caught in the crossfire. But the western island is mostly forested… perfect for an ambush.” The quartermaster mutters, but there’s apprehension in his eyes as he glances over at Hongjoong. “Are we really going to do this, captain?”
You want to ask the same thing. Because you think your captain has finally gone crazy.
Two days ago, the morning after you’d seen his right eye in his drunken state, Hongjoong had come out from his cabin and announced to the crew that they were heading to the Cayman Islands.
You had dropped your breakfast sandwich in shock, unable to process what your captain had just said. Even Seonghwa, who had been distributing the first water rations of the day, had simply stared at his captain for a long moment, eyes so comically wide you would have laughed if the situation you were in hadn’t been so severe.
Was your captain really about to trade you and Yeosang for the antidote?
There had been a pause, a grim silence that filled the air, before the younger battlemaster had stormed forward and grabbed his captain by the lapels of his shirt aggressively, yanking him up to meet his eyes in a show of blatant disrespect.
You had never seen Jongho so furious.
“I thought we were going find the antidote?” Jongho had demanded, eyes burning with barely subdued rage. “What about Yeosang-hyung and Chin Hae, huh? Are you really going to give the two of them up like that?”
Fear had rushed through you at Jongho’s words as images flooded through your mind. Heavy ropes around your wrists, your feet bound in chains. The burn of the noose around your neck. The hooded face of the executioner as he pulls the lever.
Then nothing but darkness.
But before you could descend into a full on panic attack at the thought of your own cold blooded death, Hongjoong had answered with a single, determined word.
“No.”
You had been utterly confused. How then, was your captain intending on getting the cure from Commander Kang if he wasn’t going to give up Yeosang and you in exchange for it? The Royal Navy’s vice commander wasn’t about to just hand over the cure to you for free! Jongho must have felt the exact same way because his grip on his captain slackened ever so slightly as he gaped at his hyung.
“But-”
Your captain’s reply was blunt.
“We’re going to take it by force.”
And that was how all of you had ended up in this situation.
You glance at Seonghwa, who looks every bit as apprehensive as you are. There’s doubt in his gaze as his eyes flit over the more detailed map at the side, analysing the layout of the island with a frown on his face.
“There’s a lot of vegetation and a hill a short distance from the shore.” The cook points out grimly. “It’s likely they’ll have set up base at the top of the hill so they can see us coming, and from upper ground they’ll have the advantage in a fight. Captain, are you sure you want to do this?”
Even Jongho, who had been the most vocal in his opinions about not giving you and Yeosang up, glances at his captain worriedly. You can see that he’s formulating battle plans in his mind, weighing risks and calculating potential threats. “Captain, there might be an entire battalion waiting for us there, not to mention Yunho-hyung’s out of action. Are you really sure about-”
But your captain clearly isn’t in the mood for doubt, because he merely rises to his feet to give all of you a silent, piercing stare.
“My crewmates are in danger. There is no way I would give up Yeosang and Chin Hae. If they aren’t going to give me a way out, I’ll create one myself.” He pauses to look at every one of you in the eye with a burning look that sears your very souls, although when it reaches you, his gaze softens ever so slightly. “Are all of you with me or not?”
When no one answers, he continues to speak, his voice now taking on a more sombre, gentle tone. “You know I wouldn’t blame any of you if you chose to stay out of this battle. I can see that the odds are near hopeless myself, but we’ve overcome the impossible before. Sirens, witches, magical storms. As a crew, I do believe that we can do anything. We’re a family that can pull through any storm, as long as we’re together.”
There’s a long silence as your captain’s words sink in.
We’re a family.
Finally, Mingi puts down the papers and sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose in exasperation. Your captain stiffens at the sound, drawing himself up to full height and getting ready to rebut whatever his quartermaster has to say, green eye narrowing with the ferocity of a lion. You and Yeosang exchange nervous looks; is Mingi about to tell your captain how absurdly reckless this plan is?
The tall man opens his mouth to speak.
“I can’t believe you have the gall to pull emotional shit in this kind of situation… and it actually works.”
You nearly choke on your own spit and a tiny smile splits your captain’s tense expression down the middle, a breath of relief escaping his mouth. “Watch your mouth around me, Mingi-ah.”
The quartermaster merely rolls his eyes, shaking his head. “Yes, captain.”
At Mingi’s words, the weight on all of your shoulders seem to lift ever so slightly. Mingi doesn’t think that the two of you aren’t worth the risk and he’s willing to plunge into the dangers of the unknown to keep you with the crew. You’re oddly touched and even though you don’t really think this is the time for that, you just want to give the tall quartermaster the biggest hug you could ever manage.
Then you think the idea through and immediately shake your head.
Jongho nods seriously, but you can see the relief in his eyes and the happiness he tries to hide from all of you as he distracts himself with laying out a battle plan. “I think we should send two teams. One goes around the side of the hill to snuff out any ambushers in the vegetation in a pincer formation and the other attacks head on, since we don’t have any time to waste.”
Mingi’s gaze switches from lighthearted to intense in seconds as he scrawls out Jongho’s words out on paper with a piece of charcoal in hand. “That’s a good idea. You take the main charge… I’ll take Wooyoung with me and go around the side to take out the reinforcements. It’ll be night when we reach the island, so we can move under the cover of darkness. San, Seonghwa, Chin Hae and Yeosang will stay on board with Captain.”
Yeosang nods in agreement. “That’s the best we can do.”
You’re utterly confused by all the battle related jargon that they’re throwing around, but before you can clarify what they mean, your captain cuts in with an annoyed expression on his face.
“Wait… wait a moment.” Your captain is rubbing his one eye with a scowl on his face, as if he can’t quite believe what they’re saying. Both Mingi and Jongho turn to glance at him with bemused looks on their faces. “You mean to say… I’m not going?”
There’s a moment of silence as the rest of the crew exchange wary glances.
You frown in confusion. That’s true. Why won’t they let your captain go onto land with the rest of the landing crew? You know your captain is exceptionally skilled with weapons and can take care of himself in a fight better than anyone else, so why would they want your captain to stay on board? Surely he would be an asset in a battle.
“Well, you know you can’t see very well in the dark because of your eye, captain-” Seonghwa speaks up cautiously. You barely have time to register his words before Hongjoong growls in anger, one hand reaching up to clutch the eye patch resting there.
You almost shiver at the dark tone in his voice.
“Curse this damned eye-”
“Captain, you know that we really don’t mind your eye.” Yeosang tries to soothe Hongjoong and you nod along, having seen under the eyepatch yourself before even if your captain may not remember it. “But if you do go along with them, you’d only slow them down.”
Hongjoong scowls in hatred. “But-”
“I’m going.”
All of you whirl around in surprise to stare at the door in shock.
It’s Yunho standing there, leaning against the door heavily for support. You can hear San clucking in the back in worry, “you can’t be moving around like that, Yunho, you need to rest–” Alarm rises in you, what is he doing up? This is just going to cause the poison to move faster through his bloodstream, and honestly, he’s in no condition for a fight. But the older battlemaster completely ignores your master, staggering forward on unsteady legs to stand before his captain.
“I need to go, captain.” His brown eyes are pleading, and you instantly know why Yunho so desperate to be part of the landing party on the Cayman Islands.
He wants to see his brother again.
Even from here, you can see the thin sheen of sweat on his forehead, hear his voice wavering. Yunho is weak, way too weak to move off this ship. It’s been a few days since Yunho’s been poisoned, and even though the poison is a slow acting one, you’ve witnessed Yunho’s body slowly destroying itself from the inside out with every day that passes right before your eyes.
As much as you hate to admit, you wouldn’t let Yunho onto land either. The battlemaster looks like he’d collapse in seconds if not for San supporting him by the arm, and who knows what Gunho would do to him this time?
“Yunho-ah, you’re really not in the best condition-” Seonghwa begins hesitantly, but your captain merely holds up a hand to silence the cook, green eyes burning into Yunho’s.
“Are you crazy?” Hongjoong tells him bluntly and you see Yunho flinch back, as if physically struck by his captain’s words. Then his jaw clenches in anger and your heart drops in your chest, anxiety spiking in you nervously as tension splits the air between Yunho and your captain.
“I need to go.” The battlemaster snaps back emotionally, eyes almost welling with furious tears as he stares down his captain with barely clenched fists. You can see your master swallowing in alarm as Yunho steps forward, almost nose to nose with Hongjoong. The sight is almost laughable considering that your captain is a head shorter than Yunho, but his presence is every bit as threatening as the battlemaster looming over him. “Hongjoong, I owe Gunho that much-”
“You owe him nothing.” Hongjoong spits venomously in response, the scowl on his face turning dark. You and Yeosang exchanged panicked glances, his hand grasping yours instinctively in fear. Is this going to escalate into a physical fight?
“I abandoned him back there!” Yunho grabs his captain by the shoulders, eyes wild with anger and grief. Jongho rushes forward to pull the taller man away, but the older battlemaster struggles against him, furious tears spilling down his cheeks. “I left Gunho all alone in that godforsaken arena, left him to die! Who knows what happened to him in there?”
“You did nothing wrong.” Your captain growls, hands fisting in the lapels of Yunho’s shirt even as the two struggle against each other, and you can see Hongjoong’s knuckles turning white.
Fear roots you to the spot as you watch the three of them grapple back and forth, Seonghwa and San merely clutching each other in shock. Yunho has actually lost his temper, for the first time since all the days you’ve known him, his usual kind brown eyes burning with rage that looks practically alien on his face.
But your captain’s words fall on deaf ears.
Yunho yanks himself from Hongjoong, tearing his arm from Jongho’s grip with a snarl on his face.
“I’m going, no matter what. I won’t let anything or anyone stand in my way. Not even you, Captain.”
And with that, he whirls around to leave the cabin.
“Yunho!” Hongjoong snaps, but Yunho ignores him, hand twisting the doorknob as he steps forward.
You panic. All you know is that you can’t let Yunho out of your sight. If he does go, the poison will practically race around his body, slowly eating away at him from the inside until it kills him. He’s only lasted this long because of the little healings you and San have managed to perform thus far, but if he’s going to do something stupid like this, he’s going to be a dead man in days.
He’s almost out of the door.
So acting completely according to instinct, you grab nearest thing you can from the table next to you and smash it over Yunho’s head with all the force you can muster.
Hot tea goes flying into the air as the wooden base of the tankard collides with the back of his skull, so hard that you can actually hear the sound of wood splintering. He pauses, there’s a little intake of air as he hangs there, seemingly suspended in mid air for a second. Your mouth falls open in horror when you realise what you’ve just done.
You just hit the battlemaster in the head.
Then Yunho’s eyes roll back in his head and he collapses to the ground.
There’s a moment of stunned silence as everyone in the room turns to stare at you with wide eyes, before San squawks in alarm and races to his friend’s side, checking him over for any signs of permanent damage. Luckily for you, he’s still breathing, chest rising with every intake of air and you nearly sag in relief.
You didn’t kill him.
“He’s out cold.” Your master declares and Hongjoong steps over to you, warm hands gently prising the tankard from your fingers which are still numb with shock. You can barely feel it leave your hand as he sits you down on Yeosang’s bed, fingers resting in your hair softly for a moment to comfort you.
“Thank you for doing that, Chin Hae.” Hongjoong says grimly as Jongho slings the unconscious battlemaster over his shoulder carefully and carries him out of the cabin door, San following close behind after throwing one last concerned glance at you.
“I’ll handle the wheel, captain.” Mingi tells his friend and Hongjoong nods. The quartermaster leaves with Seonghwa at his side, leaving you, Yeosang and your captain alone in the cabin.
Yeosang sniffles softly and you turn around to see him dabbing furiously at the tears in his eyes next to you. At the sight, you can’t help but let a few tears of your own escape and Yeosang pulls you into his arms as you cry quietly into his shoulder. You hate seeing Yunho in this state, absolutely loathe how you’re completely powerless to help him in a situation like this.
But there’s absolutely nothing you can do.
“Hey.” Hongjoong kneels before the two of you, taking both your hands in his. You glance up at him through teary eyes and he raises a hand to your cheeks, swiping the tears left there with his thumb, so gentle it almost makes your heart ache. “Don’t blame yourselves for this, alright? We’ll get past this.”
And deep in your heart, you so desperately want to believe that it’s true.

on why sexual dimorphism and phrenology are not the same thing
since @guccigramsci so kindly requested that i do this, here’s a quick little analysis on why understanding that sexes are different does not make radfems racist!
to begin, i’m going to define sexual dimorphism and phrenology, so anyone coming into this with a blind eye can understand this and follow along.
sexual dimorphism: the condition in which two sexes of the same species exhibit different characteristics beyond the differences in their sexual organs.
phrenology: the detailed study of the shape and size of the cranium as a supposed indication of character and mental abilities.
so i’m going to begin by dispelling the myth that sexual dimorphism and phrenology are the same thing, since they’re not. sexual dimorphism in humans shows a clear difference between male and female bodies (not accounting for intersex individuals). what’s really cool about humans is that, while we are a species that abides by sexual dimorphism, our structures aren’t too different at all! they’re still more than enough to be noticeable, however.
humans, for the vast majority of us, differ in the following ways:
1. males have narrower hips while females have wider ones. the female pelvis is larger than the male pelvis, which is more compact and narrower. the male pelvis is also less tilted than the female pelvis. (sources: b, e, f, g, k) 2. males are larger than females (in both weight and height). (sources: a, g) 3. females have more breast tissue than males. they are nearly the same, save from the fact that females develop means for the production of milk. (sources: h, i) 4. the fat distributions in males and females are vastly different. females naturally hold more body fat than males, as female bodies account for the care of a growing baby while males do not. females and males also store fat in different areas. females often will store fat in the butt, hips, and thighs, while males will often store fat in the stomach. (sources: c, d) 5. the skulls of males and female are different. females have a more rounded forehead and more rounded eye sockets. males have squarer jawlines, while females have more pointed ones. female skulls are lighter than male skulls. (sources: a, j, k)
sources for these claims: a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i, j, k
sometimes, there are outliers! there are outliers in every species, after all. but statistically speaking, these are some of the ways in which males and females differ biologically due to sexual dimorphism. (again, humans are on the lower end of the spectrum of abiding by it, but we still do!)
my arguments: acknowledging sexual dimorphism as a biological fact is not the same as acknowledging phrenology as a biological fact. acknowledging sexual dimorphism as a biological fact also does not make a person racist.
1. sexual dimorphism, while not as extreme in humans as it is in other species, has been proven to exist in humans (look at all of the sources above). while this can be shown in the differences between male and female skulls, that is not only not the only evidence for sexual dimorphism, but it also is based in biology and not a pseudoscience.
2. male and female is a biological reality. sex is a biological reality. gender is not. race is not. @guccigramsci seems to be claiming that race is a biological reality (X), but to claim that women of color have different bone structures than white women is often the same racist logic that TRAs will use to claim that trans women are women, since black women are women. in my claim that race is a social construct, i am saying that the differences between people within the same race have the same variance as the differences of people between different races (X). oftentimes, people will claim that you can tell someone’s race by their skull alone, but that is not entirely true. some anatomical features are more commonly found among certain races, but that does not make said anatomical feature a certainty for that race.
“...can you really determine race from a jawbone? Probably not. Forensic anthropologists try to infer the ancestry, gender, and age of human remains by measuring their dimensions and observing their features with the naked eye. ...researchers have compiled a number of mandibular traits... that they think differ slightly between races. ...Racial classification is an inexact science, if that’s even the right word for it. Forensic anthropologists never make definitive ancestry pronouncements. They say a bone is consistent with” European ancestry or “likely” of Asian ancestry. ...the discipline has its roots in the pseudoscientific 19th-century practice of using skull measurements to prove Caucasion intellectual superiority.”
3. race is a social construct, not a biological one. "If separate racial or ethnic groups actually existed, we would expect to find “trademark” alleles and other genetic features that are characteristic of a single group but not present in any others. However, the 2002 Stanford study found that only 7.4% of over 4000 alleles were specific to one geographical region. Furthermore, even when region-specific alleles did appear, they only occurred in about 1% of the people from that region—hardly enough to be any kind of trademark. Thus, there is no evidence that the groups we commonly call “races” have distinct, unifying genetic identities.” (i’ve already cited this source above but this section in particular is incredibly important).
“In one example that demonstrated genetic differences were not fixed along racial lines, the full genomes of James Watson and Craig Venter, two famous American scientists of European ancestry, were compared to that of a Korean scientist, Seong-Jin Kim. It turned out that Watson... and Venter shared fewer variations in their genetic sequences than they each shared with Kim.”
4. phrenology (the claim that you can tell a person’s personality by seeing what the bumps in their skull are) and sexual dimorphism (observing the differences between secondary-sex characteristics in males and females) are not comparable. (X - this source shows the difference between craniology and phrenology, and even straight up says that race is an indefinite science and sex is not)
in conclusion: i’m not a nazi you dork ass loser lmao

Netflix’s Shadow and Bone: My Fangirling Thought-dump
Fair Warning: I’m a darklina, so leave now if you’re not going to be decent (I don’t bash on Mal, though, so you’re safe there)
So I binged Shadow and Bone without reading the books (judgmental people, leave now), and let me tell you, I love the show. True, there were some things I wish were different based on what I’ve been spoiled on about the books, but as a show in and of itself, it’s strong.
So here’s just a dump of my thoughts and fangirling (I use *chef’s kiss* a lot). And obviously, spoilers ahead.
***SPOILERS AHEAD***
WHAT I LOVED
- The storytelling, both narrative and visual, is exquisite. How the dialogue contributes to the storytelling, answering the audience’s questions and doubts clearly even before they’re brought up; how the visual arrangement contributes to informing the audience of what they need to know and how that timeline of knowing helps the audience in piecing together the story, the characterization, and the timeline; the tying in of characters’ storylines so audiences are not confused as to why we’re spending so much time watching the goings-on with a character. *super chef’s kiss*
The show is so organically unified in terms of characterization, visual media, dialogue contribution, and so much more that I just, uh, I cannot even! I LOVE THE ART OF IT!
- How the show dealt with race, identity, prejudice, politics, social acceptance, individual needs, personal wants, the desire for security and safety that mean differently for each character *raises both hands to the heavens in thanks* The show’s concepts hit close to home for me in terms of race, prejudice, mixed biological identity that informs social perceptions, the desire for belonging and safety and acceptance, and I think this show would hold a special place in my heart for its portrayal of these issues.
- How different sexualities and genders are portrayed so casually, as if it’s an everyday normal thing (as it should be).
- The Crows (of course) and how their story intersected with Alina’s, and how the storytelling (I’ll keep going on about the visual storytelling until I run out of breath) shows the intersections and develops the diverging stories to meld into each other
- How they showed how brilliant Kaz’s mind is. The visual storytelling of showing one scene without explanation, leading the audience to create their own assumptions on what Kaz was seeing, then having the scene turn out different once it has been explained later when things have unfolded *chef’s kiss*: the meeting between the Conductor and the First Army General, the hidden changing room, the lynx flush assignments
- How Inej’s faith is portrayed neither negatively or positively; it’s just a thing that is not contrived but contributes to the plot, not some sort of moral policing inside or outside of the story.
- Mal! I heard he’s a jerk in the books, that’s why I didn’t want to read the books before watching the show. But god, his first scenes with the sparring, and the way Archie moved in that fight. Also how Mal’s overall storyline progressed, how his ties to Alina was shown, how his feelings got revealed to the audience even before it got revealed to Alina so the sincerity is not questioned. That True North thing! *heart eyes*
- How the issue of consent in the sexual sense is highlighted as important. The darkling literally asks “Are you sure?” before he proceeds. (Of course, this is very different from his take on non-sexual consent later in the show - like really, you literally put a control button on your hand to control her powers! Dude...)
- The exploration of Alina’s overall consent and agency. They even literally have her say her lack of it when she was in the final episodes. Even Kaz shoves it in the Darkling’s face that she doesn’t want to be a captive anymore. And throughout the show, the thought processes behind her decisions are clearly communicated, giving her agency a lot more weight as the audience can understand and sympathize with her decisions. And she’s not just a “victim” of the story; she pushes the story along with her actions, from her decision to burn the maps so that she could come with Mal, to her childhood decision to cheat the Grisha test, to something as visually simple (yet strongly narrative-affecting) as choosing the left or right path in Baghra’s escape route.
- The exploration of want. What each character wants, how one want like “security” could mean an entirely different thing for each character (i.e. the Darkling’s want of security for the Grisha, Alina’s want of security for herself, Inej’s want of security in the form of freedom, etc.). The show, being well-written, is a smorgasbord of academic analysis. Again, if I haven’t said it yet, I LOVE THE ART OF IT!
- NINA!!! God, I really like how the actress looks! There’s just something about her face that I really, really like. And then there’s Nina’s lines, the delivery, the attitude *chef’s kiss* One caveat though: I wish she wasn’t made to say “Please” when she was hanging off the ice ledge. Even though she had already warmed up to Matthias (and him to her), I would have wanted the scene to be a clash of his pride and her dignity: just like in the ship earlier, her not submitting even to his kindness (sincere or otherwise), and him having a moral crisis on helping a “witch.”
- Genya’s hand-to-hand fight *absolutely beautiful*
- The overall fight choreographies. It’s not just people punching each other and brawling; the jiu-jitsu locks and judo throws hold a special place in my practitioner’s heart, and the fights look really good, either it be for the women (Hello, Genya and Inej) or the men (Mal and Aleksander’s fight looked so different from usual brawls because of the throws).
- How the different Grishas, even the usually non-combat ones, can weaponize their abilities: Healers can, obviously, break bones; Heartrenders can stop your heart; and even the Sun Summoner can blind you.
- Jesper and Milo the goat. “Grab the goat. Hug the goat. Shut the fuck up.” And how Jesper tearfully parted with Milo LOL
- How Alina just climbed right into the get away carriage’s literal trunk. LOL!
- Kaz and the Darkling meeting. I know it’s not in the books (they’re not even in the same trilogy/duology), so having these two characters with so much gravitas meet and actually verbally spar is *chef’s kiss*
- Inej’s first kill is to save Kaz *heart eyes*
- The Darkling’s humor! “Yes, David?” and “I’ll have to give that speech again” were hilarious!
Of course, there’s many more, generally because of how they contribute to, again, the visual and narrative storytelling and the characterizations and the plot progression and, ugh, I'll stop now or else I'll just keep going on about how much I love how this show was crafted.
NEUTRAL
- I heard that Alina was supposed to be funny in the books, but apart from the “No pressure” and “My tailbone is killing me” lines, there wasn’t really much of that humor in there--most of the humor came from Jesper’s scenes or Mal’s friends. Honestly, I think the show Alina fits the story, so I don’t really care if her humor is not as evident.
WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE
- Gosh, Netflix and the showrunners really know how to market the show. They were right when they said the first step is to cast Ben Barnes. Then the focus on the General/Darkling and Alina’s story and relationship, that sort of dark and brooding archetype getting with the green and pure protagonist, is so delicious. But of course, endgame is not meant to be. The Darkling is a manipulative, controlling, toxic person, and should be nowhere near Alina if not on equal ground. I just wish they didn't put that much focus on it in the marketing (i.e. the extra clips distributed to media sources) to make it seem like darklina could happen, especially with the story changes the show was reportedly doing. Oh well, that’s what fanfiction is for. And I guess there’s a chance for redemption in the following season? *puts on clown nose*
MY QUESTIONS AND...WISHES?
So since the show has changed the story quite a bit from the books, I'm so stoked to see where the characters’ stories lead to. I’m sure there would be similarities to the books (Nikolai and Weylan would show up, for sure), but there would be a lot of changes, I'm sure (Alina’s a Saint now, so how would that affect her life on the run and her relationship with Mal? There’s no great reveal for Aleksander’s name, so perhaps he doesn’t die? At least not that way?).
- I wish we’d see more of that internal/thought connection the Darkling and Alina seemed to have. And I wish they’d highlight further the idea of balancing, of being the only two in the world, and of how each needs/complements the other in terms of power. I just really wish they’d explore more darklina, and perhaps have it open to have a darklina ending (I’m not holding my breath for that one at all, but hey, membership to clownverse is free). At the very least, would there be a change in the Darkling’s ending (does he get stuck in the tree)? Does he get a redemption arc? Would he utter the “I do not repent” line? Would Alina and him have the shared connection, I-can-see-you-even-if-you’re-far-away bond? Would Alina somehow forgive him (hopefully only if he has changed and is not controlling and toxic anymore)? Would Alina and him have a showdown as he tries to expand the fold and she tries to close it? He has command of even the volcra now, so what would that mean for Alina’s side? Does she get an army, too? Maybe there’d be creatures of light, too? Perhaps other animal amplifiers?
- Now that Mal and Alina have more or less confessed to each other and ended up together, what would be the next hurdle in their relationship? They can’t just stay static, after all, otherwise the story of their relationship won’t be a good narrative. Season 1 touched on Mal’s fear of the Grisha (with Alina literally asking him out loud), so perhaps as Alina’s powers grow, Mal’s discomfort with her powers would show more (I hope the show doesn’t make Alina do a Slip-into-the-Darkside trope, or at least not too much to the detriment of her agency and core characterization)? Or perhaps going from that conversation with the Darkling and Mal, when Aleksander seemed to have gotten under Mal’s skin when he pointed out that due to their immortality, Aleks and Alina are endgame: maybe Mal would have that rivalry with the Darkling again and, considering Alina’s kind of psychic bond to Aleks (if they add that in), would feel that Alina might choose the Darkling in the end? I just hope the characters aren’t reduced to stereotypes of 1-girl-2-guys-and-girl-can’t-choose love triangle. Even season 1 explicitly had Alina cut off ties with Mal first (because she mistakenly thought he didn’t want anything to do with her anymore since he’s not replying to her letters) before she went to the Darkling romantically.
- What’s next for the Crows? Would Inej eventually go to Sankta Alina? Perhaps the Ice Court heist is next for the Crows. Nikolai has to show up some time, right? How would that tie in with Alina’s storyline?
I have a lot of other questions on what happens to the characters and the overall story, and I'm really glad that the show has diverged from the books to an extent that a lot of things could be possible. I hope Season 2 does happen, and I hope it’s as good as Season 1, especially since COVID is still happening and filming and filming options are limited. If Season 2 does happen, I hope it gets release soon :P

Super Fighting Roll (2-5)
(Reaching the center of Wily’s castle, Roll prepares to confront him and Break Man, hoping against all odds she can make it back with both her brothers in tow.)
The familiar visage of Gamma had taken on a terrifying air, permeating the massive stone chamber as he loomed in the center of it. Wily stood at its feet, with Blues holding Rock nearby; Roll and Rush walked as close as they dared, their glares being met with Wily’s hideous grin.
“So nice to see you again!” the scientist greeted. “I trust you’ve brought the Energy Elements?”
“Don’t give them to him, Roll!” Rock said.
“Silence! You will hand them over, and quickly, before I change my mind and scrap your brother here and now!”
Roll held out the two Elements. Wily jogged over and snatched them, snickering as he retreated.
“At last! Now Gamma can operate at full power! The world will be mine!”
“I did what you asked,” Roll said. “Now let Rock go.”
Wily turned to Break Man. “Hmm...something just occurred to me. Why should I worry about upholding my word when dealing with a lowly housekeeper-bot?”
What appeared to be a massive, yellow-plated helmet descended from the ceiling, emitting a shaft of light that pulled Wily up through the air towards it. Roll started forward, stopping short when Break Man pointed his weapon at Rock. A window opened at the helmet’s front, and once he was inside, Wily sat down at the controls and steered it upward, latching the craft onto Gamma’s head.
“Nehehehehe! The strongest power source known to man...a machine built from my brilliance, supplemented by Light’s tech...and, adding one last personal touch of my own...there is nothing in this world that can stop me now!”
Gamma raised its arms, energy coursing through its frame. A punch was aimed at Roll--she leapt backward, watching as the floor she had just been standing on was pulverized into a large crater.
“Ah...but, I do need to run a field test. Break Man! Give me some room. Let Roll fight me, and see just how outmatched she is!”
Nodding, Break Man dragged Rock off to the side of the chamber, Roll watching carefully. Once they were clear, she turned back to Wily. “I’m not really surprised...but how could you do this after we all trusted you? We each gave you the benefit of the doubt, gave you a chance to prove yourself! And you’re really throwing it all away, just like that?”
“Bah! What sort of question is that: the trust of a few against everything I’ve ever wanted? I have nothing to regret!”
Blasts began to shoot from Gamma’s mouth. Boarding Rush, Roll circled the robot to evade its fire, watching its movements very closely. “You really are the worst…”
Gamma swiped high, its massive arm easy to dodge. Roll threw several Metal Blades, doing little more than scuffing its armor; she then detonated a Crash Bomb at the scuff, followed by a Hard Knuckle, but even the combined effect of all three weapons wasn’t enough to break through the giant robot’s shell.
“Nehahaha! You’re nothing but an annoying gnat before the might of Gamma!”
Roll deployed a Leaf Shield as he again opened fire. “Even if it takes a while, I can still wear you down!”
“Oh, is that right?”
For just a second, Roll thought she could see Gamma flash blue. As its arm moved, she prepared to dodge, but the giant attacked at a blistering speed that caught her completely off-guard. Roll was smacked straight into the wall, left dazed as Gamma pelted her with his blasts.
What was that sudden burst of speed? Dr. Light didn’t mention anything like that.
Roll managed to slip free, dropping down to land on Rush. Gamma swung again, now moving at a normal speed, so she kept her distance as best she could in the cramped chamber.
Wily must have made some last-minute modifications. I hope he didn’t notice what Dr. Light was telling me about…
“Yes, yes!” Wily cheered. “Do you see now? This is the kind of power mankind can access with robots at our command! Autonomy, emotions, identity--they’re all shackles that deny a robot its full potential! Only without such weight can we find the true limits of robotics, and shatter them!”
Roll equipped the Air Shooter, trying to disorient Wily with a whirlwind. The gust of air dissipated against Gamma like a shallow breath. Strafing to avoid his attacks, she next tried a barrage of Magnet Missiles, sure they would each find their mark. It proved a distraction, at least, but she was out of ammunition in seconds. She dove to avoid a blast before quickly angling back up to dodge Gamma’s arm, not noticing the blast knocking loose a large chunk of stone from the wall. The rubble struck Roll, sending her crashing into the chamber floor, and red light danced across Gamma as it reared back its fist. Pinned where she fell, Roll’s only choice was to use a Crash Bomb to destroy the rubble and fling herself out of range just before the punch connected. More rubble cascaded down from above as the entire castle shuddered, the colossal blow splitting the floor down to its foundation. Wily cackled with glee.
Is he nuts? He’ll bring the whole place down if he keeps doing that! I may not be able to afford to wait him out.
Weaving between Gamma’s feet, Roll sent Search Snakes crawling up its legs before leaping back onto Rush. The tiny machines managed to wriggle part-way into the tiny openings around Gamma’s joints, forcing Wily to focus on dealing with them while Roll doused the robot with Bubble Lead. Just as it reached up towards her, she fired off a Spark Shock, causing Wily to shriek in surprise as several switches on his console burst. Roll immediately took to attacking the spots the snakes had indicated, emptying out her Needle Cannon and Shadow Blade stores before Gamma flashed blue and knocked her back to the floor.
“Hrm! If anyone were to find a way to truly annoy me even now, it would be you,” Wily said. “Of course, even that’s only possible because you copied the weapons of my Robot Masters! This is a total victory for my technology!”
Roll slowly picked herself up, trying to simply ignore the pain she was registering all throughout her body. “I don’t get it...you say robots shouldn’t have identity...but your Robot Masters can still think for themselves...why is that?”
Wily paused. “Well, they’re programmed to be completely loyal--that’s the important thing. It’s not like I can send them out with no AI at all.”
“Do you just want to beat Dr. Light at his own game? Or maybe, deep down, you think he’s actually right?”
“Silence!”
“Or...maybe you just don’t want to be all alone.”
Wily snarled, slamming both Gamma’s hands down in an attempt to crush Roll. He swung wildly, tearing chunks out of the walls in the process, while Roll carefully darted around each attack. Finally landing a blow, Wily moved to make a follow-up attack while Roll was dazed, but suddenly, Gamma locked up, jolting in place a moment before missing with a slow swing.
“What?!” Wily cried, beating the console. “What’s the problem, you miserable machine? Your design should be flawless!”
Roll let out a short breath. Just before she had left, Light had told her about something he noticed during his test of Gamma: there was a minor misalignment in the power distribution system, and Break Man had appeared before he could so much as mention it. Now that the system was drawing on three times as much power, he predicted that it would become overtaxed if she could just hold out long enough.
It’s happening even faster than he expected. Whatever last-minute changes Wily made must have actually made the problem worse.
Gamma momentarily froze again, causing Wily to stop and examine his readings. Hoping to keep him from piecing it together, Roll stuck a Crash Bomb in Gamma’s shoulder, his anger easily surpassing his curiosity.
“This is your fault, isn’t it?” Wily said as he pulled Gamma around. “What have you done to my precious work?”
Gamma glowed blue once more, the ensuing blow just clipping Roll. Then, a plate on Gamma’s back burst in a fiery explosion, exposing a tangle of frayed live wires.
“No! This can’t be!”
Gamma twitched erratically, giving Roll enough time to recover. She fired a Spark Shock into Gamma’s wound, drawing another shriek from Wily, and then flew high as he attempted to counterattack.
“Why you...you…!”
“You brought this on yourself, Wily!” Roll said as Rush turned to face him. “You were in such a hurry you missed what was right in front of you!”
Wily threw a switch. Red light consumed Gamma, now glowing brighter than ever, as Roll charged directly at it.
“Time for you to pay the price!”
Rush activated his spring, shooting Roll through the air right at Gamma’s face. Engaging Top Spin, she spun around to build up momentum, and then at the last second, delivered a devastating kick that sent small fractures spreading across Gamma’s face. The giant was knocked back, hitting the wall as more pieces of its armor were blown off. Roll landed on Rush and took a moment to catch her breath before looking for Rock. Her brother was safe, if still held by Break Man; content for now, she cautiously headed to where Wily was crawling out of the downed Gamma.
“Blast it all!” Wily said. “What went wrong?! I should have been invincible!”
Roll jumped down in front of him. “It’s over, Wily. No second chance this time.”
Wily grit his teeth. “Break Man!”
Roll whirled. Break Man pressed his cannon against Rock’s head.
“Neheheh...that’s right. Keep her busy while I get out of here!” Reaching into his coat, he pulled out a small metal box and pressed the button on it. Immediately, minor tremors began to rock the castle. “In mere minutes this place will be brought down! Too bad I can’t hang around to watch it happen, nehehehah!”
She glanced back at him. “Wily…!”
He leapt to the floor, running off towards a dark hallway. “This isn’t over just yet, you scrap! I won’t stop until I’ve taken over this wretched world! Even if you make it out of here, one day, I’ll destroy you for sure!”
Knowing there was nothing she could do, Roll switched focus to Break Man. Once she could no longer hear Wily, she said, “Why are you doing this, Blues?”
Break Man didn’t answer--it was Rock who said, “He thinks Dr. Light was going to reprogram him.”
“That’s insane!” Roll said. “Dr. Light would never--”
“Shut up!” Break Man interrupted. “He decided I was broken! That there was something wrong with the way I am! Why should he get to decide that?”
“You can’t go on with a faulty power core!” Rock said. “Just let Dr. Light help you! You let Wily work on you!”
“I didn’t have a choice! I was...my core was almost done for when he found me...I didn’t…”
Roll paused. Quietly, she said, “You panicked, didn’t you?”
Break Man grunted.
“Blues...if he did repairs on you, then how do you know--”
“Because I watched what he was doing!”
Roll’s eyes widened. “W...What?”
Break Man finally lowered his buster. “I stayed active while he worked on me...I know he only did the bare minimum, because I saw every move he made.”
“B...Blues...for work that involved? How is it even possible to stay awake for all that?”
“...Never said it was easy. But I won’t let anyone shut me off. I won’t give anyone even the slightest chance to change who I am!”
Roll stared at him. “Have you not changed at all? Through any of this?”
“What do you mean?”
“Thinking Dr. Light betrayed you, running off on your own, nearly dying...watching someone work on your main systems...none of that has affected you at all?”
“...I…”
“It must’ve. I don’t know what you were like before, Blues, but I can’t imagine it was this. You have changed, even without Dr. Light doing anything.”
Break Man went utterly still. Feeling his grip loosen, Rock tentatively stepped away from him.
“But change doesn’t have to be a bad thing, Blues. Sometimes, we just need a little help in making it.”
“Hmph...you’re saying I should just let Light do what he wants to me?”
“All he wants is to prevent you from ending up like that!” Roll said, pointing at the mutilated corpse of Gamma. “Gamma’s power system was flawed--if Wily had fixed that, it probably would’ve been unstoppable! What are you going to do the next time your core starts to go out? Get Wily’s help again? So he can leave you behind in another collapsing fortress?!”
Rock looked up at the walls, the bits falling off of them only continuing to grow larger. “Speaking of, shouldn’t we get out of here? This place is already so damaged--I don’t think it can take much more.”
Roll looked between him and Break Man. Just as she was considering trying to run, the red robot said, “The self-destruct mechanism is on the third sub-level. There’s no security...if you hurry, you might be able to disarm it.”
“Huh? You’re gonna help us?” Rock asked.
“Well...it benefits me, too. I don’t want to end up buried here.”
“Oh, good. Come on, Roll!”
Roll still felt uneasy, but there was no time. “Take Rush and go. I’ll see if I can catch up to Wily.”
As soon as Roll took a step towards the exit Wily had taken, Break Man used Time Stopper to cut her off. “Not so fast. I still owe a debt to Wily. You’re not going to stop him without going through me.”
Roll clenched her fist, glaring at him for a few long seconds. “Rock. Take Rush and go.”
Glancing between them, Rock said, “But…”
“It’s okay, Rock. I can handle this, but I need you to shut off the self-destruct sequence. Please, take care of it.”
With great reluctance, Rock headed for the exit. Rush stopped to nudge Roll, who gave him a quick pet, and then took off after the boy. With both of them gone, Roll began to walk forward.
Break Man started by throwing a Metal Blade. Roll dodged easily and retaliated with Hard Knuckle, hitting Break Man’s shield but managing to push him back a bit. Unfortunately, she didn’t have the energy to use it again; Break Man pushed her back with Air Shooter while she switched weapons, and then shrank back behind his shield as a Gemini Laser began to ricochet around the room. Roll slid to one side in an attempt to surprise her foe with her remaining Metal Blades. One managed to graze his helmet, but that was all. She put up a Leaf Shield to protect herself from a volley of Quick Boomerangs, and when Break Man leapt aside to evade the Gemini Laser, she slid forward and engaged Top Spin, using its remaining energy to smack Break Man into the floor.
“Wily’s only using you,” Roll said. “Can’t you see that?”
“Of course I can,” Break Man said. “But it doesn’t change facts. If it weren’t for him, I would’ve gone inactive...buying him time to escape is the least I can do.”
He swept the room with his laser cannon, forcing Roll to slide under it. She almost ran directly into a line of Bubble Lead shots, but she managed to tumble clear, shooting a charge shot as she came up. Break Man blocked and stepped out to hurl Quick Boomerangs, only to find that Roll was ready: she fired her Air Shooter, blowing the projectiles off-course as well as catching Break Man’s shield, not managing to rid him of the weapon but at least shaking his grip on it. She followed with another charge shot, Break Man saved only by a timely Leaf Shield. Roll used Atomic Fire to incinerate the leaves when they came at her, and then noticed Break Man equipping Time Stopper, hastily doing the same. The castle froze around them as Roll ran in, firing constantly to keep Break Man pinned down and unable to attack. Ultimately, her lack of weapon energy came back to bite her, and Break Man was suddenly behind her to land a hit with Metal Blade.
“Stop already!” Roll said. “This is pointless! Just come back with us, Blues! If you don’t want Dr. Light to repair you, then fine, but at least give him a chance to clear things up!”
“Why would he want me back when he has the two of you?” Break Man said, arming Crash Bomber. “You’re both exactly what he wants you to be--not ‘defective’ like I am!”
Roll ducked and returned fire with her buster. “You don’t get it at all! Of course Dr. Light still cares about you: even under the circumstances, he was overjoyed to see you again! You couldn’t even see that?”
Break Man hid behind his shield.
“And you think I’m ‘exactly what he wants me to be’? He was dead-set against letting me fight! If he had it his way, I never would have been weaponized in the first place! But I convinced him anyway, and it’s not like he stopped loving me just because I’m not doing what I was built for!”
Firing her last Gemini Laser, Roll circled around her foe. Break Man stayed on the defensive, keeping his shield between them. Roll threw a series of Quick Boomerangs, aiming them so that they would arc around Break Man’s shield from multiple angles--he leapt back, tucking his shield in to fit it through the assault, and Roll took the opportunity to fire a Spark Shock. It only stunned him for a brief moment, but that was long enough for the Gemini Laser to close in on him at last. She blew him back with Air Shooter until he got his shield back up, and then paused.
“He just wants to ‘fix’ me,” Break Man muttered. “He’s convinced I’m broken at my most fundamental level. I can’t trust someone like that.”
“Dr. Light only wants to help you,” Roll said. “Maybe he didn’t understand the way you would think about this. But if you explain how you feel to him, he won’t force his way on you. He’s not the sort of person you think he is.”
Break Man remained behind his shield. A strange sound prompted Roll to look up: through a gap in the collapsing ceiling, she could see a saucer-like craft rising into the sky.
“Wily…”
“Just let him go, Roll.”
“He’s dangerous! If I don’t stop him, he’ll hurt more people, and more robots too! Do you want that on your conscience?”
Break Man’s armor shifted as he equipped Metal Blade. “I uninstalled that long ago.”
Roll summoned a Leaf Shield, but the saw blade slipped through an opening and cut her arm. Huffing, she said, “Seriously?!”
A shot of Atomic Fire came next. Roll dodged and slid forward, summoning a Quick Boomerang to her hand as she leapt onto Break Man’s shield. She jammed the weapon into the glass-covered slit on the shield, chipping away a small portion of it before Break Man pushed forward in an attempt to shake her off. Roll slid to the side, getting behind her opponent, and unloaded her remaining Quick Boomerangs into him.
“Are you really okay with this, Blues?”
Break Man set his shield back up quickly, crouching behind it without saying a word.
“Answer me!”
She pelted his shield with a stream of buster shots. An especially massive tremor struck the castle, dislodging a massive chunk of wall directly above Roll; she tried to escape as soon as she noticed it, but it didn’t look like she would have enough time. To her surprise, a shot of Atomic Fire hit the rubble, blasting it apart into harmless pebbles. She turned back to Break Man, who was already pulling back behind his shield.
“…Wily’s gone,” he said. “My debt’s repaid. What happens between you and him now is none of my business.”
The castle began to grow still. Roll said, “Looks like Rock managed to deactivate the self-destruct, too...”
Break Man slung his shield across his back and turned to leave. “We’re done here.”
“Wait.”
He stopped.
“...Is there any way I can convince you to come back with me? Just to talk to Dr. Light?”
Break Man clenched his fists. “I can’t. You...you might be right. But I’m not ready to take that chance.”
Roll’s gaze fell. “Alright. If that’s the case, I won’t force you. But...when you are ready, we’ll be waiting for you. You’ll always be welcome, Blues.”
He looked over his shoulder at her. Then, he equipped the Time Stopper, and in the next instant he was gone.
***
The scant sounds of the repair equipment echoed weakly off the walls of the sub-level chamber of Light Labs. Guts Man and Fire Man, now back on their feet, busied themselves with clearing away the remaining rubble, while LaLinde continued to work on Elec Man with help from Tempo and Rock. Light was just finishing his examination of Roll, and she had just finished filling him in on what had transpired at Wily’s castle. The old scientist had a distant look in his eye that she couldn’t quite identify.
“So that’s why he ran away,” Light said. “I’m such a fool...why couldn’t I see it? I was treating him only as a robot to be tuned up. No wonder he came to despise me so.”
“I’m sorry I couldn’t bring him back,” Roll said. “I tried my best.”
Light shook his head. “The fault isn’t yours, Roll--if anything it’s mine. It sounds like you were able to get through to him, and you’ve certainly opened my eyes. For now, all we can do is hope. It’s just as you said: he’ll always be welcome.”
Roll hopped down from the bench, following Light across the floor to where Elec Man was being repaired. “Is there anything we can do for him? Keeping him active during system repairs is something I don’t think I could do…”
“Indeed, I don’t think I could stomach it either.” He stroked his beard. “I’ve been approaching this all wrong. Rather than trying to change the way he is, I should figure out how to assist his current way of functioning. Hm, what’s the best way to go about that…”
LaLinde rose to her feet as they came near. Elec Man, now with a crude shell of steel wrapped around his once-exposed back, sat up slowly.
“That’s all we can do for now,” LaLinde said. “It’ll last him until we can get the new parts made and installed.”
“Thank you, doctor,” he said. “Am I able to assist in cleanup in this state?”
“Sure, just don’t strain yourself. No heavy lifting or high voltage.”
He nodded. Standing, he faced Roll, who said, “I’m glad you’re alright, Elec Man. Those Crash Bombs are no joke!”
“Indeed…” Elec Man glanced at Rock briefly. “I think I’ll make myself useful, but, er...would we be able to speak later? There was something I wanted to ask you about.”
“Huh? Oh, of course. Whenever you’re ready.”
Elec Man departed, and LaLinde crossed her arms with a sigh. “Well...guess we should prepare ourselves for whatever Wily cooks up next. Do you want to try building another Gamma?”
Light scanned the broken scaffolding. “I don’t think that’s an option. Those components were expensive, especially the Energy Elements--it’ll be some time before we’re able to replace them.”
“Don’t worry,” Roll said. “When he does show his face, Rush and I will bring him in!”
“Isn’t that what he’s counting on, though?” Rock said. “I’m sure he’ll be ready for you.”
“Ready or not, I won’t let him win. I’ll find a way to stop him, no matter what it takes.”
Tempo shifted her weight. “...How can you be so sure, Roll? You can’t prepare for everything on your own. Even you have limits.”
“She won’t be alone,” Light said, setting a hand on Roll’s shoulder. “She has all of us supporting her. As long as we each do our best, we’ll be able to overcome whatever Wily throws our way.”
Roll gave a nod. She didn’t expect it to be easy for any of them. But she had accepted that this was her future now, and with luck, the strength she drew from that would be enough to see her through it.

Seungcheol Full Natal Chart Reading
for the few member’s we have vague birth times for i’ll be doing FULL natal chart readings. PLEASE keep in mind that the birth times given were rather vague, and so i took some liberty on my end to decide on exact times in order to pinpoint likely risings and so forth. not only that, but with a full chart there is a lot more we can delve into but the concepts discussed also get more vast and more abstract. There is a lot more interpretation being done in these readings as opposed to my past readings which are more observation based. so please take everything i say in these readings with a grain of salt!
so cheol answered in a fan sign slot for @/scoups_bf on twitter and said that he was born around 9am
and the reason i’m not taking 9 o’clock literally and inputting 9:00 am EXACTY when looking up his chart is cuz ALL of the members we have birth times for have just given us approximations
and i don’t think cheol is much different.
and honestly, i wouldn’t make such a hoopla about it if 9 o’clock wasn’t putting him just at the cusp between being a virgo rising and a libra rising.
and so i’ve personally taken the liberty and decided to read his chart as though he was born any time after 9:25 am which would make him a libra rising.
for more specific reasoning, check out an ask i answered addressing my thoughts on the matter.
with that being said, there is still A LOT we can take away just knowing that he was born generally around 9am
and so even though we can dispute whether or not he is a virgo or a libra rising as much as we want
a majority of this reading is actually going to rely more so on the placements of his planets within the houses.
and regardless of if he was born at 9am on the dot, or 9:59am — his planets and their respective houses do not change much.
the only planets that are affected are his moon and jupiter which i do not focus on a whole bunch in this reading!
SO WITH THAT HUGE DISCLAIMER OUT OF THE WAY
you can trust that this reading is still going to apply to him and his chart REGARDLESS of his rising
(tho, again, i’m reading his chart as though he’s a libra rising).
so first off, we can take a look at his chart shape.
all of his planets are distributed within a pretty confined space in his chart, leaving around 4 houses empty (7th-10th houses)
you then have the rest of the planets taking up around two thirds of the chart and are forming an orderly line.
this is called a locomotive shape (ehehe thank you anon for helping me figure out his chart shape).
and what’s really cool is that once you start getting into chart shapes, the nature of the distribution of the planets within someone’s chart can actually give the native influences that manifest in ways that are very similar to signs unlike the ones in their chart.
for example, a locomotive is a very ambitious and relentless placement that can have a very aries-like feel.
and so although seungcheol’s only aries influence is his libra mars in the 1st (aries’ house), he’s going to actually have a very aries-like nature in how he goes about his goals and ambitions where he’s very unapologetic and attention-grabbing.
there is a lot of energy, passion, and strength-of-will about him because of this chart shape.
but what’s also interesting about this chart shape, is the added emphasis it places on the leading planet of the locomotive.
the leading planet is the front of the locomotive as if the planets are traveling in a clockwise direction just like (you guessed it) a train!!! 🚂🤯
for cheol, that means that venus in the 11th house is the leading planet.
this can make his libra influence a lot more prominent than initially expected, as well as the impact of the 11th house a lot grander.
and so there are three things that a locomotive shape can indicate.
one of them being a “goal” or a direction in life as indicated by the leading planet and the house it lands in.
seungcheol has the planet of harmony, romance, art, and comfort in the 11th house which is the house that rules friendship, community, greater call-to-action, and humanitarianism.
this truly adds a huge emphasis on people for cheol.
you can trust that his goals center around rallying people, working towards a greater cause, and building community
and he’s going to go about this in a very venus-like fashion.
so having that environment where he’s creating, playing, and communicating with others is very important to him.
having that excitement in creation and collaboration is something that drives him and how he hopes to encourage others
and with this 11th house association, this hints towards a desire to reach wider audiences, make bold statements, and enact positive, maybe even revolutionary change.
another thing a locomotive shape can indicate is the struggles one may have, as well as “necessary evils” they need to take into account in order to achieve said goals
and that’s indicated by the final planet in the locomotive.
that’d make it cheol’s saturn in the 6th house.
and so you’re taking the planet of discipline, restriction, and ambition and putting it in the house associated with work, health, and lifestyle.
this placement is both very positive and potentially difficult in a few different ways.
you’re taking saturn’s sense of discipline and applying it to work
and this is what makes seungcheol not just such a hard worker but also re-emphasizes the responsibility he already feels thanks to his capricorn moon.
within the context of his locomotive, on the other hand, it can potentially be a very difficult placement.
his sense of purpose and responsibility runs the risk of being all consuming.
especially when considering that the 6th house deals with lifestyle and the day-to-day.
it’s a mundane area of our lives, but it’s routine and constant which can make this weight of responsibility rather omnipresent and relentless.
and with the association of health, this placement can often times mean that his focus in work can potentially be at the expense of his health.
he may struggle to find a balance between meeting expectations and taking care of himself as he’s prone to getting so absorbed in work he forgets to do personal check-ins.
not to mention, wherever saturn lands will bring a very hypercritical mindset where he may struggle to ever feel satisfied with himself and his work.
what’s also of note with having saturn at the end of his locomotive, is the fact that venus is at the very front of it.
the planet of art and play is being weighed down by the planet of responsibility and structure.
his desire to do as his heart pleases is at odds with his sense of obligation.
this further adds to this mindset he may already have with his cap moon where he struggles to give himself some slack, even though the trajectory of his life is very much aimed at being that free and creatively-minded person.
and this adds to this sense of “necessary evil” that i mentioned before.
in order to play, he must work.
but also, it can create a mindset that in order to deserve the company he keeps, he must be successful.
then the final thing to take into account with a locomotive is the empty houses.
the empty houses emphasize the “missing” truth that he is attempting to address in terms of the rest of his locomotive.
i always find this part of interpreting a locomotive the hardest as it’s pretty vague and can manifest in so many different ways.
it can serve as a form of motivation may that be through fears or past experiences.
or maybe a sense of fascination or desire to discover/uncover what remains ambiguous in his life
but we can break it down in a few different ways.
these planets reference adulthood in terms of life stages, and so it’s more than likely that whatever this is referencing to in his life hasn’t happened yet or he’s simply working towards it.
they also hint towards added value put towards partnership, marriage, travel, philosophy, career, and public image.
there is also the quadrants to take into account, and it’s primarily his 3rd quadrant that remains empty.
the 3rd quadrant deals with his sense of social harmony and identity.
it deals with the way he approaches lifelong commitments, the people he spends time with, the people he attracts, and the places he travels.
it’s a social section of the chart, but one thats associated with great commitment and contract.
and there are a bunch of different ways of interpreting the empty section of his chart
but considering how socially inclined his chart is from his libra rising, his leo placements, to his entire 11th house — i think the interpretation that makes the most sense is in addressing the social aspect of the 3rd quadrant
and i do not want to brush aside his empty 10th house even though it is technically not a part of the 3rd quadrant.
this house is especially important to consider when taking into account the fact that the 10th house is capricorn/saturn’s house, along with the knowledge of the prominence of saturn in his locomotive.
the empty 10th house can indicate he has a strong desire to make a name for himself
and with the 10th house also being in cancer, it can mean he wants to establish himself as someone people can rely on and someone who can take care of others.
someone who can be a source of safety and comfort
and then you have the 3rd quadrant which deals with marriage and interpersonal style/commitment
and so that can mean that what’s driving his locomotive is his desire for stability and lifelong partnership.
these influences can also point towards a potential fear of being lonely, and of not having someone he can share his life with
maybe a fear of missing out on those experiences, or of not having this area of his life to settle into.
it’s kind of like his chart is nesting, and so obviously he wants to share that nest
but moving on
we can now take everything i’ve just mapped out and deduce and observe a few things about him.
i think that career is certainly a huge pillar for him and something he does not take lightly
but in the big picture of his chart, his career is simply a supporting figure.
having saturn in the 6th house at the end of his locomotive gives this false impression that career and work are INCREDIBLY important to him.
and this is because of that nervousness that exists inside of him where saturn insists on constantly questioning, reassessing, and attending to his work.
it can even feel as though there is something there that needs to be proven, or earned for him
and that is further emphasized because that speaks directly to his leo and capricorn placements that place such a huge emphasis on success and ambition.
these placements want and need something to work towards, and they both crave accolade and status.
it is easy for him to focus on work, to focus on achievements, and to use said achievements as a point of reference for his own self-worth
it may even feel like a part of his identity.
and all of these influences are so loud and imposing that they kind of tune out his more softer venus that’s seeking this much less tangible goal through art, expression, and companionship.
his chart gives me a sense that his work is certainly there and it’s an important factor to consider, but it’s not the focal point.
his direction is clearly pointing towards community, relationships, and social influence.
at the end of the day, what’s of value to him is his own ability to bring people together and serve a greater purpose towards the people he cares about.
and with venus at the helm of this, he’s going to achieve this through his ability to communicate and care for others and will do so in a very sincere, charming, and authentic manner.
whats interesting too is that you have venus which is a rather gently expressed planet, but at the front of a locomotive and in the 11th house which is a pretty bold and broadly applied house — this kind of creates a very interesting duality in how he goes about his ambitions.
he wants to bring about change, do things his own way, maybe even attempt to entirely change the game.
but it’ll be within the extent his art and his ability to make personal connections can go.
he doesn’t have an enterprising, the “ends justify the means” attitude.
instead, he wants to accomplish what he can with the most integrity and meaning possible
but after considering all of this, everything he’s said about his own personal goals to be able to stay with svt together forever take on a more significant meaning.
i think when he was younger, he may have put a stronger emphasis on proving himself and leading his group towards success.
but overtime, i think his goals have molded into being something that’s much more along the lines of seeing his career as a means of ensuring he can remain with his members as long as possible.
not only that, but a tool that allows him to provide and support them.
the added bonus that comes with his career as it is now, is that he’s able to stay near the people he cares about while also connecting with people on a greater scale and encouraging good will.
this is one of the reasons he’s so sincere in how he communicates with fans, and i think it comes from a very earnest place because he genuinely wants to connect and soothe others.
if he can be someone they can rely on, he’s more than happy to take on that responsibility.
but beyond his work as an idol — with these empty houses dealing with marriage, partnership, and even parenthood through his cancer midheaven which is an EXTREMELY parental influence.
it wouldn’t be a surprise to me that, as he gets older, he realizes his main goal is to settle down, start a family, and to be a father.
again, this is another interpretation where his energies through saturn and the 6th house have told him he wants to make a name for himself, he wants to be successful, and he wants to be the best of the best.
but at the end of the day, that’s not really where his chart is planning on landing him.
rather, it’s in being able to establish a home and share his life with someone.
achieving that sense of belonging through friends and family is the moment his chart is pointing towards being when he can finally put his feet up and be like “this is what i was doing this for”
especially with that libra rising that’s reaching out for that companionship and commitment.
and not to mention a moon in the 4th house that really emphasizes the importance of home and roots.
this is actually the first time i’ve even attempted to do a full chart reading for these guys, and i’m definitely still processing everything i’m noticing.
i definitely think it’s interesting to consider these placements knowing what we know about him
although that knowledge is not personally, not intimately, and only what we’re given permission to see out of respect for him and his privacy.
but we can obviously pin point at least a few ways these placements have manifested so far for him.
such as his career (obviously lol)
his own experience with his health (known vaguely by us, and referenced as a new personal goal of his to maintain)
and his own statement in valuing the members over the company.
i think this is where i reiterate again that everything i say in my readings and with astrology MUST be taken with a grain of salt.
at the end of the day, the details we actually have with regard to the members are merely breadcrumbs compared to how vast and detailed charts can go.
and so everything i’ve said is up for interpretation
and with readings like these i always encourage the person i’m doing a reading for to exercise their right to agree or disagree with anything i say.
and so i offer that to you guys as well
i’m really just reading what’s in his chart, putting things out there, and hopefully creating a cohesive story/interpretation that can be applied to him and reflected upon — hopefully giving either perspective, validation, or ease (lol hypothetically if he were to ever see this reading).
but if i had to wrap things up, when i do readings of this type, i do tend to leave with maybe words of encouragement or feedback that i feel may be helpful.
and so if i were doing this reading personally for cheol, i’d really reiterate to him that his energy is always going to be directed and validated by his community and loved ones.
career is great and it’s definitely important as it gives his chart direction and allows him to put that antsy “i need to do SOMETHING” energy somewhere.
but at the end of the day, he’s going to find more traction and purpose by focusing his attention towards his relationships as his success is only as good as the company he keeps.
i wouldn’t be surprised if he’s had really rough moments where his saturn, cap, leo & 6th house placements have all lead him down this very tiring work path with the promise of feeling some kind of “aha” moment at some point.
when in reality, his chart is seeking out something of a much different nature.
his vision shouldn’t be on the end goal, but rather his sense of togetherness.
making his focus “be with svt forever” was the right move in spirit, and will result in much more long term happiness.
his hard work is important and will pay off, but it wont be through awards and it wont be through titles.
it’ll be in feeling like he’s provided, and being able to look at the people around him and know they’ve been taken care of and that he’s made a difference to them.
and also in knowing that he plays an important role to them.
at the end of the day, his chart is meant to play just as much as he’s driven to work.
but ultimately, his sense of play is what is leading him.
i’d implore on him to never make a career decision that compromises his ability to feel free, and to be creatively and socially enriched
and i do think this is something he knows.
with all the complications and confusion in his chart i’ve outlined thanks to his locomotive, we can’t forget the “aries” nature of this chart shape.
with all of that conflict comes clarity.
once he understands and focuses on his ultimate goal and what gives him that satisfaction and purpose — he’s going to barrel towards it with no hesitation, remorse, or caution.
he knows what he wants, he know who he ultimately answers to, and it’s equally “how do i get there” as it is “how do i cut off all distractions”
which is certainly the right mindset for him, at least in terms of his chart and the “path” it’s leading him towards as well as overcoming his charts own struggle in finding said clarity.
it’s definitely “i know what i want and fuck all the rest” with him, and i’d encourage that thinking in terms of maintaining and protecting what is important to him.

Andarine (S-4) does not bring numerous side effects, however there is one side effect frequently associated with usage. It appears far more serious than it in fact is, so a deep understanding of it is needed. Several researchers frequently report evening vision troubles when making use of S-4. The testosterone-induced muscle hypertrophy is mainly as a result of a boost in satellite cell and also myonuclear number, in addition to increasing the quantity of protein synthesis and preventing healthy protein destruction. An additional among the main advantages of SARMS is that, unlike testosterone, the majority of them do not obtain converted into 5α-DHT. Furthermore, they do not appear to undergo aromatization into estrogen which might decrease the event of negative effects such as gynecomastia. At the very least in animal researches, SARMs have revealed to partly achieve this, with compounds such as S1 as well as S4 binding to androgen receptors with high affinity as well as showing tissue selectivity.
Typically, a gradually raising dosage of several AAS is taken many months prior to competitors-- a process referred to as 'stacking'-- with a decrease in dosage a month or two prior to an event. However, they still do not appear to be only particular to the target receptors, and also unintentional biding to external receptors is still evident. Specifically, SARMs are developed to affix to receptors in skeletal muscle mass and bone to turn on pathways associated with skeletal muscular tissue hypertrophy as well as bone regrowth. Such a drug can hypothetically be useful at replacing testosterone usage in medical settings, which features lots of negative side effects. In essence, they are an altered form of testosterone utilized in hormonal agent replacement therapy as well as steroids. SARMs are a reduced term for discerning androgen receptor modulators.
Body builders were switching over from anabolic steroids to Andranine as they assumed there were much less side effects.

Both of these fallen short to get regulatory approval for the legal supply chain.
Nonetheless these products have actually been utilized by lots of people in the athletic community.

It is difficult to assess if/when/how it binds and just how bad the impact might be. Some hardly experience it whatsoever, while others can find it harder to manage. Andarine (S-4) is categorized as a SARM as well as a study chemical.
MK has incredibly strong advantages when used for injury rehab. MK supplies REAL healing as opposed to methods that serve as a quick fix, offering short-lived alleviation and only concealing the injury. Secretagogues usually carry the fear of prolactin rise. However, studies with MK677 did not show any type of increase in prolactin levels.
Throughout an occasion they might likewise supplement this program with a stimulant. However, the pattern of administration adopted by somebody looking for performance-enhancing advantages indicates that the degree of the medicine in the blood is almost continuously elevated. This indicates that they are damaged down by the acids in the stomach, in much the same way as healthy proteins in food during food digestion. This suggests that they have to all be administered by shot, usually right into a muscular tissue or under the skin. These representatives are fairly brand-new on the biking scene, with EPO in particular having actually gotten much media attention in recent years. Every one of the instances given right here are produced as artificial substitutes for hormonal agents that happen normally in the body.

Alone for the Holidays
Summary: Vision discovers the holidays are very different when half the team is on the run.

Wishing everyone a peaceful holiday season.
Vision always finds hovering above the stairs is preferable to physically stepping, a preference that is amplified in this moment as it allows him to focus on balancing the stack of boxes in his arms. If he were to step down it is possible that the weight distribution would shift ever so slightly as to unbalance his carefully arranged load leading to an unpleasant outcome. Hovering efficiently removes such nuisances.
“You know you can take more than two trips, right?”
Sage advice that Vision typically follows, but each descent into the storage room tonight has led to an increased weight in his chest, one he desired to stymie by reducing the number of trips. Which is why he is unable to see his companion from behind the wall of boxes in his arms. “I did not wish to unnecessarily draw out the process.”
Though he cannot see him, the tone of Rhodes’ “Fair enough,” conveys an image of the man’s characteristic nod and shrug he utilizes whenever readily accepting someone’s reasoning. “Come on over and learn the system.”
“Of course.” Vision slowly squats as he places the last of the boxes on the ground next to Rhodes’ wheelchair and then stands to attention as he awaits further instructions.
“Alright, so this one,” Rhodes points towards a pile on the coffee table of opened and partially sorted boxes, several stray pieces of tinsel clinging to the tape residue on the flaps, “is for the tree. This one,” a new pile that looks almost identical to the other one minus the tinsel is on the chair Vision uses when playing chess, “is for the halls and common area.”
There is a third stack, located on the couch, where all of the tape has been cut and the flaps delicately folded shut again. “And these?”
“Those need to go back in storage.”
Vision feels foolish after asking as the answer would have been apparent had he simply stopped and applied logic before speaking. “Oh yes, I recall now.” Given their former teammates are still internationally wanted fugitives, it was determined that any object or decoration traced to the rogue Avengers should be kept in storage. Invoking the old adage of out of sight, out of mind. Yet Vision is not certain hiding it will truly remove all thoughts of their friends. Or at least, it has not done so for him, the compound’s silent rooms an ever present reminder of the schism.
“We should probably just get this over with.” He suspects Rhodes feels similarly, though they have not spoken about it. It is a hunch predicated on the knowledge that both of them have put off decorating the compound until it was unavoidable. “Want to take the tree or the boxes?”
Neither is particularly enticing or meaningful since this is only his second holiday season and he still lacks the traditions so deeply embedded in his teammates, so Vision chooses what he believes Rhodes would prefer. “I can sort the rest of the boxes and then aid you.”
“Sounds good.” A pang of guilt stabs Vision’s chest as he watches Rhodes’ onerous ascent from his wheelchair, the exoskeleton Stark crafted for him still in beta testing and prone to giving out unexpectedly. It is amazing to Vision how unperturbed Rhodes is most of the time and how, besides their first conversation post Leipzig, he has never lashed out at Vision for what happened (unlike Tony, who has done so on a handful of occasions). It doesn’t mean Vision allows himself leeway in accepting responsibility for what occurred, but it does help him breathe easier knowing there is no ill will between himself and Rhodes. “I’ll need your help towards the top, I’m not climbing that ladder.”
“Understood.” The year before, when everyone was present, including Tony in an askew Santa hat and a drink in his hand as he directed everyone’s decorating, there was music streaming from the surround sound and a fake fire crackling on the television. Wanda stayed with Vision in the kitchen, stirring the hot chocolate and spiked cider, commiserating with him about how odd all of the traditions were to outsiders such as themselves. Now it is silent minus the clink of ornaments and rustle of tinsel as Rhodes works on the tree.
Vision isn’t sure if this paradoxically weighty hollowness overtaking his limbs is normal, a topic he will need to investigate more tonight once Rhodes has retired, the past several nights introducing him to the possibility of seasonal affective disorder, though he has yet to have Helen test his melatonin levels. Vision tries to shrug the feeling away, or at least ignore it for the time being. So he begins his task, slowly forming a rhythm of running the box cutter through the tape, opening the box, and then sorting it to the appropriate pile. The process is fairly quick, his impeccable memory about where all the decorations went the year before means he doesn’t need to investigate beyond the top item in the box. That is until he glances at the contents of the second to last box. The glittery and cheerful golds, reds, and greens of the other decorations have been replaced by shiny whites and blues. Something in his chest seizes and he can’t stop his fingers tracing the dreidels printed on the crinkly paper of the string lights. The year before, long after all the holiday parties were thrown and gifts given, Wanda had confided in him that she didn’t actually celebrate Christmas. Vision, for a reason he had not been able to fully understand back then, felt a deep desire to honor her heritage and had gone to a local store to buy an assortment of, what he hoped, were acceptable decorations for Wanda. She had hugged him tightly and made him promise he’d help her hang them the next year. Only now it is a year later and he is folding the box shut and stacking it with the other off-limit decorations, somewhat concerned at the faint tremor of his hands as does so .
“Can you help me out?”
The request draws his mind back to the present, hands smoothing out his sweater as he turns towards Rhodes, “Gladly.” Vision studies the pattern and placement of the string lights on the bottom of the tree as he takes the dangling, sparkling bulbs from Rhodes and flies carefully around the tree to finish. Rhodes passes the rest of the decorations, occasionally directing Vision (in a much more subdued fashion than Stark did the year before) on the placement of the garland and ornaments.
Vision lands next to Rhodes once the star is affixed to the top of the tree. “It’s um,” the man next to him studies the large evergreen, one that could easily be placed on the cover of a magazine and will soon be on the covers of all newspapers and news sites, “a bit impersonal.”
“It is.”
Amongst the boxes in the pile going back to the basement is the vast array of personalized, garish ornaments the team traditionally gifts each other. Tony had insisted they put up the ones for the three of them, but Rhodes and Vision agreed it would only draw more attention to the missing members. What is left is a gorgeous albeit meaningless tree. “You doing okay, with all of this?”
The question is quiet, almost remorseful - whether because it is out of obligation or because he is worried about stepping on Vision’s toes is difficult to discern. “I believe so,” which is not entirely true, but is what Vision believes is socially the most acceptable answer.
“You’re still welcome to come to my sister’s, she won’t mind.”
It’s an offer Vision truly appreciates despite having no interest in accepting. “I believe it is mandated in the Accords that at least one Avenger must always be on the premises.”
This line of reasoning has not stopped Rhodes from pestering him, and it likely still won’t, but Vision can’t muster a better acceptable explanation for his refusal. “I doubt anyone would know if it was empty for a few days.” The truth is that no one realizes when the compound is empty because Vision is the only one who is consistently there to notice. “I just,” Rhodes sighs, hands waving in an attempt to convince Vision to change his mind, “I hate to think of you alone for the holidays.”
“I appreciate your concern,” Vision offers a brief, friendly smile that hopefully conveys his genuineness, “but I will be fine.”
Rhodes inhales deeply, seemingly contemplating if he continues to push on the matter, but then his chest deflates soundlessly as he accepts Vision’s decision. “Okay.” A shrug sends away the last of the concern from his voice, replacing it expertly with a more lighthearted topic, “Please tell me you remembered to order the backup sweaters for tomorrow.”
The sweaters Tony ordered for the annual Avenger Christmas card are...questionable at best, caricatures of their faces with Santa hats on with The Accordions embroidered underneath. “Yes, I have them in my quarters.”
“Thank God.” There are still half a dozen boxes of decorations left for the hallways and windows, yet Rhodes rubs his hands together the way he usually does when a task is complete. “I think we can finish the rest tomorrow, I’m kind of tired.”
Vision wonders if it is the same tiredness he has been feeling since the fallout of the Avengers. “I believe we only need the tree for the picture.”
Rhodes nods, eyes glistening from the glow of the trees, “Alright.” This is how each evening ends between them, at least when Rhodes is at the compound, very little interaction, awkward silence, and then one of them (typically Rhodes) extricates himself from the situation. “Goodnight, Vision.”
“Goodnight, Rhodes.”
Alone, standing in front of the tree, Vision searches for anything similar to his first Christmas: the awe that filled him each night when he would hover in front of the tree while the others slept, the confusion he experienced at each new tradition he was introduced to, and the warmth that bloomed from the sheer joy of the people around him. Unfortunately, he comes up empty handed.
Deciding that brooding is not the most productive use of his time, Vision glides to the couch, rearranging the closed boxes based on size and weight into a well-balanced, easily movable stack. Once it meets his specifications, Vision transfers the boxes back into the storage room, strategically placing each one on the shelves to take up the least amount of space, a real-life game of Tetris minus the disappearing lines. He would have lost the game, however, as the last box should have been placed third, its size and shape more parsimonious for the position than the one he put in its place, yet he failed to do so. Instead he slowly re-opens the box, sifting through the decorations as a gloom seeps deep into his vibranium cells. Had so many things been done differently, words been exchanged, or perhaps words been kept silent; some emotions kept in check while other, more useful, emotions were followed; actions withheld or even actions completed (he still cannot bear to think of the multitudinous options he failed to consider at Leipzig to stop the fight earlier), then this box might not be shoved into the darkness of the basement.
Vision closes the box, careful not to tear any of the delicate papers inside, and slides it onto the shelf. At this point he should retire to his quarters, or at least move to a more suitable location in the compound. He doesn’t move, however, eyes remaining on the brown wall of the boxes as his mind works.
There is a knock at the door. Wanda ignores it, certain it’s the guy from two doors down coming back drunk, yet again. Another knock and she rolls over, tugging the sheet up higher, body strongly disliking the stark temperature difference between day and night in the desert. A third knock and a painfully polite “Wanda?” jolts her out of bed, her powers flickering in the darkness as she pulls her sweatshirt towards her with one hand and closes the curtains over the window with the other. She steps in front of the door, hand poised over the knob as she sends a tendril of scarlet to confirm she wasn’t dreaming. She wasn’t. Wanda yanks the door open with a, “Vizh, what the hell are you doing here?”
“I-” this is not her normal response to seeing him, but this is also not a planned rendezvous, something they both agreed should be avoided in case other factors, like their teammates being around, would create a perilous situation. Vision seems shocked at her ire, his human disguise faltering around the eyes as she watches his irises spin. “I um wanted to bring you this,” he holds out a box to her, as if that should be answer enough.
The hallway is empty, thankfully, but there is no guarantee it will remain that way. “Just, come in.” Wanda steps aside to allow him to enter the tiny space, which is about half the size of her room at the compound, if she wants to be generous in her estimation. With the door shut and the lights on, she is torn between her desire to hug him, always elated to see his face, or scold him for misusing her coordinates given his demeanor doesn’t suggest there is any real emergency. “Vision, what’s going on?”
A quick assessment of potential sight-lines to the outside precedes the disguise dissolving into his crimson and silver visage, a sight she misses daily. Vision turns towards her, lips pursed and eyes incapable of settling on any one object. “Rhodes and I were decorating the tree for the Christmas photo tomorrow.”
“Okay.”
She is waiting for him to tell her the compound burned down or the tree somehow crushed Tony (she can hope). “It was,” a long, timid pause breaks up his sentence, a realization dawning on his face that is soon followed by a frown and flick of his eyes to her, “I feel quite foolish now.” Which confirms there is no emergency.
“Vizh,” a squeeze of his forearm draws his eyes to her, his embarrassment bursting in the air around them, “I won’t judge you, you know that.”
He sends her a sheepish, appreciative smile, “I know.” Another long pause and three breaths is what he needs to continue. “It was very disheartening to partake of such an activity without you and the rest of the team.”
A hairline fracture forms in her heart at the sorrow swirling in his eyes. “It’s always hard to celebrate without everyone you care about.” The hollowness and confusion she senses in Vision’s mind is one she knows intimately. The holiday season has long been something she tries to avoid, as best she can, wrought with reminders of all that’s been lost, of times when she didn’t have to stare at the empty seats at the table or feel the absence of the pressure of arms wrapped around her or hands gripping her own as they prayed. After their parents died, she and Pietro found one way to cope was to adopt their own traditions, taking only small pieces of their parents with them. It worked, for a time, until they just stopped celebrating other than occasionally eating Hanukkah gelt and lighting a candle in remembrance on particularly difficult nights. Last year, her first without her brother, almost destroyed her, even with her vain attempts at sidestepping it by simply not acknowledging her roots, because if the holiday doesn’t exist then it can’t haunt her. Unfortunately that’s not how it works, all the parties and the shows, the cheesy movies on television and the songs on the radio, the cards plastered to the fridge of happy, smiling families, all serve as reminders of how very much alone she is. It all leaves a bitter taste in her mouth - one she hopes doesn’t develop for Vision, his own experiences still so new to be sullied already.
“It’s not foolish Vizh,” she grips his arms and waits until his gaze meets her own, her voice developing a firmness that he won't dare to counter with any of his logic, “at all.” She wants to reassure him more, explain how she can’t make it through the season without at least three breakdowns in the privacy of her room, but the tears are already building in her eyes and she knows she won’t make it through the explanation, especially with the way he is looking at her, head cocked in empathetic concern. Wanda directs the conversation down another avenue. “So what’s that?”
“Oh, right,” they both stare at the box in his hands, “I did not want to renege on my promise.”
Wanda’s eyebrows lift as she grabs the box, inviting him to sit on the bed with her as she pries open the container, the sight of the overly commercialized, slightly tacky decorations he bought the year before shattering the dam of her tears which fall in time with her shallow, disbelieving laughter, “Vizh, you’re ridiculous-”
“I apologize for-”
“No, no no,” she puts the box on the ground and grabs his hands, hoping to convince him she’s not upset, “I mean it in the best way possible.” More laughter comes unbidden from her mouth, her reaction confusing to herself but she imagines it is even more confounding to the man next to her, how she can be crying and laughing all at once. “You flew all the way to Marrakech to give me this at three in the morning.”
Vision’s mouth quirks up into an uneasy smile as his eyes search for more information from her face, “I admit it was not the most well-thought out plan but it felt enormously important to do so.”
“What are you hoping to do with this stuff?”
He contemplates her question, his flimsy plan falling apart at the seams the longer he studies it, and she knows if he could blush that his cheeks would be turning beet red right now. His explanation comes out in a quiet, stuttery mess. “I, um, thought we could possibly, if you are amenable and interested, um, decorate your room.”
“Natasha is going to be here in four hours.”
This seems to confuse him even more, his brow knitting around the Mindstone as if her comment is in a foreign language that he is unable to translate using the internet. “Yes and I have to be back to the compound in the morning for pictures. I do not think it will take more than that.”
One the the main rules of being a fugitive is to travel light and keep only the smallest of personal mementos to reduce the risk of someone inadvertently learning too much about you. It means that Wanda knows she can’t keep the decorations, if they were to be discovered, there’d likely be questions which could lead down a dangerous road. There is no reason to tempt fate and risk losing her contact with Vision. At the same time, however, she’s unexpectedly excited at the prospect of decorating. “I suppose we could put it up and enjoy it for just a little bit.” The smile on his face is mesmerizing, his cerulean irises twisting joyously at her decision. “But you have to take it all back with you, understood?”
“Understood.”
Eagerly Wanda stands from the bed, holding her hand out to help Vision up, knowing full well he doesn’t need the aid, but he obliges, gripping her hand as he stands. “Okay, let’s see what we have.” It’s a small box and it takes them longer to decide where to put the Star of David garland and dreidel lanterns than it does to actually hang them. As Wanda fixes the angle of the lights, Vision places a cardboard cut-out menorah on the coffee table before stepping back to admire their work.
“It is not as much as I remember buying.”
Wanda rolls her eyes at the regret lacing his words, curling her fingers around his wrist and pulling him backwards until he sits with her on the bed. “Good thing this place is so small then.” They’ve grown closer in the months of clandestine contact, but not close enough to still the flutter in her stomach as she lifts his arm so she can snuggle into his side, a rush of victory to her chest when he hugs her to him. “Thank you for this.”
“You are most welcome.”
A snap of her wrist turns the overhead lights off, allowing her to more thoroughly enjoy the soft and pleasant glow emitted from the lanterns and the way it reflects off the vibranium on Vision’s face. “Are you feeling better?”
He nods, “I am, though it is always lonely whenever I leave you.”
An irrefutable statement. “I miss you too.”
Wanda smiles as he draws her closer, nuzzling into the crook of his neck, an action that encourages him to lay his cheek on her head. Several minutes pass in companionable silence, only the synchronization of their easy breathing disturbing the quiet. She contemplates staying like this, cozy in his embrace, but she also, given his motivation for breaking protocol, feels a need to probe just a bit more. “Vizh?” His hmm? buzzes happily against her head. “Is anyone going to be around the compound for Christmas?”
“No,” which is what she suspected. “Rhodes has invited me to join him at his sister’s house.”
The way he says it brings to mind a shrug, the intonation of the words dismissing the concept before it is even fully formed. “Why don’t you want to go?” Wanda knows the answer, has turned down multiple offers in her lifetime to join random (or not so random sometimes) families in their celebrations.
Vision inhales deeply, her own body rising and falling with his steadied breath. “I worry that I would merely be intruding. Given their ages and closeness, I imagine there are numerous deeply ingrained, unspoken traditions and normative expectations."
”You don’t want to feel like a stranger or risk unintentionally ruining anything.”
”Precisely.”
What social etiquette dictates is she argue against this reasoning, because she knows Rhodes and his sister would likely understand, have already accepted this possibility with the invitation. But Wanda has been that stranger, has seen Vision be that stranger for a large part of his existence. “Then don’t go. Or,” she does have one good memory of crashing someone’s holiday, last year the Bartons invited her out a couple days earlier than the rest of the team. It had the same strangeness, but it faded quickly due to how welcoming and understanding they all were of her situation, “maybe just go for a couple hours and see if you enjoy it?”
Vision’s nod shakes her head, his fingers cinching into the fabric of her sweatshirt as he considers the amended proposition. When he speaks it is quiet, a bit nervous, but filled with a renewed hopefulness. “That is a fair suggestion but I was actually wondering, even though we have a planned excursion in early February, if you might possibly be available to meet before the New Year -," the more flustered he gets the higher her smile climbs, "I, um, given that Rhodes and Tony will be gone from Christmas until the New Years Eve party, no one will notice my absence.”
The plan for Wanda is to travel with Natasha to Belarus where they are being joined by Steve and Sam for a rare week together. Technically it should be deemed too risky to even consider his offer, but technicalities are never her main concern. Wanda wraps her arm around his waist and squeezes him closer, an eager smile gracing her lips, one she isn’t sure he can see in the dim lights. “I’m sure I can sneak away for a day or two.”
“Fantastic.”
Life has taken a lot from Wanda, sometimes through her own decisions, sometimes due to outside forces she can’t control. After Pietro she had accepted that, even surrounded by teammates, she would always feel alone for the holidays. Somehow, however, the thought of spending time with Vision partially fills the hollowness of that fate, and maybe, if they can manage to keep going in this direction for years to come, neither of them will have to be alone again. “It is.”

HERE'S WHAT I JUST REALIZED ABOUT POWER
So saying startups should move to Silicon Valley, the single best thing they could do might be to create a new language, it's because you think it's better in some way than what people already had. Our startup, Viaweb, was built to be sold.1 The same thing happened during the Mississippi and South Sea Bubbles. Average age of their founders: 24. You see the same program written in two languages, and one that other big technology companies will no doubt try to duplicate.2 They would be in the software business there is an ongoing struggle between the pointy-headed academics, and another equally formidable force, the pointy-haired boss's opinion ever change? For example, it is no fun to be at the bottom, nor noblesse oblige at the top of the base language a language for the one above. Because of the circumstances in which they encounter it, children tend to misunderstand wealth.
In 1995 we thought only professional writers were entitled to publish their ideas, and that means it has to cost. I got was $12. The answer, I think, is going to happen to you, because both acquirers and investors judge you by your level of commitment. It might actually carry some weight.3 Fortran, C, C, C, C, C, Java, and Visual Basic—it is not clear whether you can afford the risk.4 Within large organizations, and the rest of the company through the COO. I come home to Boston.5 Into this already bad situation comes the third problem: Sarbanes-Oxley loosened.
Technology often should be cutting-edge. But if you had no users, it would at least make a great pseudocode.6 So future founders may not have to accept new CEOs if they don't want to offend Big Company by refusing to meet. When times get bad, hackers go to grad school. As with exercise, improvements beget improvements. And then you're really in trouble. Indeed, as with expensive cars, if you're prepared to live on ramen. This is an interesting question.7 And that also means there will always be undervalued by large organizations, because the harder it is to sell something to you, because odds are they'll have to deal with this is to collect them together in one place for a certain number of hours each day. Fortunately, this flaw should be easy to fix. When a decision causes you to develop software twenty times faster than you'd ever had to before, they expected you to answer support calls, administer the servers, design the web site, cold-call customers, find the company office space, and go out and discover startups when they're young, before VCs have puffed them up into companies that cost $100 million to acquire. So performance in the future.8
Part of the reason I say this is optimism: it seems that it should be distributed equally. There may be cases where this is a constant problem when you're painting still lifes. We're up against a hard one here. Surely a field like that would be dominated by fearsome startups with five million dollars of VC money each.9 This lets me get ip addresses and prices intact.10 No, probably not.11 But beyond that they didn't want to be able to find statistical differences between these and my real mail. Research. One often hears a policy criticized on the grounds that it would increase the income gap between rich and poor.
But partly it was because our lives were at times genuinely miserable. So what if some of the money to pay you.12 In fact, some might argue that it was too late to change.13 It's much safer to invest in them.14 No one I knew did it, but several planned to, and some may have tried. Why do people move to suburbia? If you run every day, you'll probably get something better. This is the sort of society that gets created in American secondary schools.15 The Airbnbs themselves never even saw these emails at the time, and that women will all be trained in the martial arts.16
You have to be high, and if there's a limit on the number of things people want, and that what we've seen so far is nothing compared to what's coming. But as technology has grown more important, the power of nerds has grown to reflect it.17 Inefficient software isn't gross. So the rate of evolution in mathematical notation than, say, transportation or communications.18 Empirically, boldness wins.19 Now anything that became fashionable during the Bubble robbed their companies by granting themselves options doesn't mean options are a bad idea. The Airbnbs themselves never even saw these emails at the time. I assumed it was derived from the same root as tacit and taciturn, and that you sometimes have to figure out what's actually wrong with him, and treat that. But Occam's razor suggests the truth is less flattering. Editorials quote this kind of lonely squirming to avoid it will increasingly be COOs rather than CEOs. These things don't scale linearly. Values are what have types, not variables, and assigning or binding variables means copying pointers, not what they want to be able to get into the best deals at all.
There is one thing companies can do short of structuring themselves as sponges: they can stay small.20 The root cause of variation in income is a sign of how much programmers like to be alone, so when kids opt out of the way into Lisp, they could always just.21 While refutation generally entails quoting, quoting doesn't necessarily imply refutation.22 The fact is, despite all the nonsense we heard during the Bubble about the new economy. How could any technology that old even be relevant, let alone of Bayesian spam filtering per se seem to have just humiliated them technologically. The number of people who want to work on. Why? And I think that's precisely why people put it off for as long as possible. The mere fact is so overwhelming that it may seem strange to imagine that it could be.23 In 1900, if you combine them, suggest interesting possibilities: 1 the hundred-year language now, it would arguably be gross even if they ran on a fuel which would never run out and generated no pollution. The reason we don't see the opportunities all around us is that we adjust to however things are, and are often mistaken about what they really want is the development team and the software they've built so far.
Between December 10 2002 and January 10 2003 I got about 1750 spams. You'll find more interesting things by looking at the world than you could steal it.24 I still wonder if this was a smart idea.25 Just like the committee approving software purchases. They like to get you? Typefaces to be cut in metal were initially designed with a brush on paper. And there is another, newer language, called Python, whose users tend to look down on Perl, and more waiting in the wings.

If early abstract paintings seem more interesting than random marks would be lost in friction. Cit. But this is the only one.
It's hard to judge for yourself and that don't scale is to claim that their explicit goal at Y Combinator was a sort of community. You'll be lucky if fundraising feels pleasant enough to incorporate a prediction of quality in the 1990s, except that no one thinks of calling that unfair.
The story of creation in the U.
After a while we might think it was putting local grocery stores out of them, initially, to the size of the number of situations.
There were a first approximation, it's easy for small children to consider themselves immortal, because the kind that evolves naturally, and for filters it's textual. You'll be lucky if fundraising feels pleasant enough to supply the activation energy for enterprise software. That's not a commodity or article of commerce. Viaweb, if you have 8 months of runway or less, then add beans don't drain the beans, and help keep the next three years, it would be enough to do right.
4%, Macintosh 18. Not in New York.
Roger Bannister is famous as the cause. To spread them. Oddly enough, the underlying cause is the accumulator generator in other ways.
The cause may have no connections, you'll be well on your thesis. This is a particularly clever one in an empty room, and they were still so small that no one is harder, the light bulb, the world, and the hundreds of thousands of small and use whatever advantages that brings.
No. If Paris is where all the red counties. A significant component of piracy is simply that it refers to features you could beat the death spiral by buying politicians.
Microsoft, not all do. Which is precisely because they wanted, so they had to write about the idea of starting a startup, unless it was wiser for them.
The ordering system was small. The image shows us, they may then, depending on their appearance.
When you fund a startup, and the low countries, where you wanted it? One YC founder told me about a form that asks for your work. Could it not grow just as you can ask us who's who; otherwise you may have allotted for the same reason 1980s-style knowledge representation could never have left PARC.
I call it ambient thought. They're motivated by examples of how to appeal to space aliens, but hardly any type we tell kids are probably not far from the compromise you'd have reached after lots of exemptions, especially for individuals. Even the cheap kinds of work have different time quanta.
I'm not going to give their associates the title partner, not you. Indifference, mainly. Basically, the number of discrepancies currently blamed on various forbidden isms. Some blue counties are false positives reflecting the remaining power of Democractic party machines, but Javascript now works.
That's probably too much to say whether the program is no personnel department, and more pervasive though. Wufoo was based in Tampa and they succeeded. It was born when Plato and Aristotle looked at the valuation turns out only to your brain that you're not trying to figure this out. That's a good way to pressure them to make software incompatible.
Then when we were working on some project of your identity. They don't know of any that died from releasing something full of bugs. Maybe that isn't the last step is to protect one's children seems weaker, judging from things people have seen, when they decide you're a YC startup and you have a competent startup lawyer handle the deal for you. A round about the same thing twice.
She ventured a toe in that respect. The Industrial Revolution, England was already the richest country in the standard series AA paperwork aims at a regularly increasing rate to impress investors. So if they want. Some of Aristotle's contribution?
Apparently the mall was not just a Judeo-Christian concept; it's random; but it wasn't. Cit. On the way they have to pass.
But if idea clashes got bad enough, but they can't hire highly skilled people to do with the best ways to help a society generally is to tell them about your conversations with potential acquirers. It was revoltingly familiar to anyone who had recently arrived from Russia. It would have for one another indirectly through the founders: agree with them in advance that you're not sure. Mueller, Friedrich M.
You've gone from guest to servant.
So if it's dismissed, it's cool with us if the current options suck enough. I'm not saying you should always get a job to get them to make peace. How to Make Wealth in Hackers Painters, what that means the right question, which people used to wonder if that got built this way.
I make it easy. I don't know of any that died from releasing something full of bugs, and owns significant equity in it.
It is still possible, to allow multiple urls in a signal.
What I should probably pack investor meetings too closely, you'll be able to distinguish between gravity and acceleration.

The 15 Best Foods to Eat for Breakfast
Begin your day away from work right
Whenever you surge out the entryway toward the beginning of the day without something to eat, think about this: Skipping breakfast can set you in the mood for gorging later in the day. A sound a.m. dinner, then again, can give you vitality, fulfill your hunger, and set the phase for shrewd choices throughout the day.
"You need to go for a morning meal that consolidates great carbs and fiber with some protein," says Erica Giovanna, MS, RD, a nutritionist at Clay Health Club and Spa, in New York City. Fortunately, your choices are a bounty. Here's a gander at a portion of our most loved breakfast nourishment, alongside master tips for making them considerably more advantageous.
1. Oats
You may have seen a heart-molded seal on your container of cereal as of late. The seal's there in light of the fact that oats contain beta-glucan, a sort of fiber that has been appeared to help lower cholesterol when eaten normally. Need another motivation to dive in? Oats are additionally wealthy in omega-3 unsaturated fats, folate, and potassium.
Steel-cut oats, which take around 15 minutes to cook, contain more fiber than moved oats or moment assortments, yet any kind of oats is a sound decision. Simply stay away from the seasoned sorts, which can be pressed with sugar. Rather, improve your bowl with milk and a touch of nectar, and top with leafy foods.
2. Greek yogurt
This tart, smooth yogurt is stacked with calcium and flaunts a lot of protein—about twice as much as normal yogurt—to keep you feeling full for the duration of the morning. Your most logical option: Choose a plain, nonfat assortment, and add some natural product to give it some sweetness and season (and a portion of included sustenance).
"I adore Greek yogurt since it's actually snappy and simple," Giovinazzo says. "You can generally take it with you on out the entryway."
3. Wheat germ
A little wheat germ goes far. Only two tablespoons give about 15% of your prescribed everyday admission of nutrient E and 10% of your day by day folate. "Nutrient E is regularly somewhat low in individuals' weight control plans, so this is a decent method to include some additional—particularly in the event that you don't eat a lot of nuts or seeds, two other enormous sources," Giovinazzo says.
It's anything but difficult to join wheat germ into practically any supper, including your go-to morning meals: Sprinkle it over grain, mix it into yogurt, or blend it into a smoothie.
4. Grapefruit
Attempting to get more fit? As per one examination, eating a large portion of a grapefruit before every feast may enable you to thin down quicker, on account of the organic product's fat-consuming properties and its useful impact on glucose and insulin levels. Grapefruit is additionally hydrating, filling, and stuffed with insusceptibility boosting cell reinforcements.
For a balanced breakfast, pair it with protein, for example, yogurt or an egg, Giovinazzo proposes. In any case, check with your specialist first in the event that you take any meds, as grapefruit and grapefruit juice can meddle with some professionally prescribed medications.
5. Bananas
There's not at all like a banana at breakfast to keep those early in the day yearnings under control. The yellow organic product—particularly when they're as yet a touch green—are a standout amongst the best wellsprings of safe starch, a solid sugar that keeps you feeling more full more.
"Cut it up and add it to oat or oats," Giovinazzo proposes. "It will include regular sweetness, so you may not require extra sugar."
On account of a sound portion of potassium, an electrolyte that enables lower to pulse normally, bananas are an especially decent decision for individuals with hypertension.
6. Eggs
These extraordinary edibles have made a significant rebound as of late. Once avoided for being high in dietary cholesterol (one yolk contains about 60% of your everyday distribution), eggs are presently held onto as a sound wellspring of protein and supplements like nutrient D. Why the turnabout? Research has demonstrated that the cholesterol in our nourishment has less of an effect on blood cholesterol than recently suspected.
"On the off chance that, by and large, you're picking lean proteins and not eating a huge amount of fat and cholesterol, at that point eggs are an incredible thing to have in your eating routine," says Giovinazzo. The American Heart Association prescribes that individuals with ordinary cholesterol limit their cholesterol admission to 300 milligrams every day.
7. Almond margarine
Try not to eat eggs or dairy? Almond margarine is a fantastic exchange wellspring of protein, and it's loaded up with monounsaturated fat (one of the great fats). In addition, as Giovinazzo brings up, "it's extremely flavorful spread on entire grain bread or combined with a banana or an apple."
Healthfully, almond margarine is practically identical to nutty spread, and they each have around 100 calories for each tablespoon. Almond margarine contains somewhat less soaked fat, however—an unequivocal point to support its, notwithstanding for individuals who aren't oversensitive to peanuts.
8. Watermelon
As its name recommends, watermelon is a superb method to hydrate in the first part of the day. What's less notable is this succulent organic product is among the best wellsprings of lycopene—a supplement found in red leafy foods that is critical for vision, heart wellbeing, and malignant growth aversion.
The best part is that watermelon contains only 40 calories for every glass, arrival it on arrangements of purported negative-calorie sustenances that probably consume a greater number of calories amid assimilation than they include. (In reality, it's more muddled than that, however that is no motivation to not eat watermelon!)
9. Flaxseed
Sprinkling ground flaxseed into a smoothie or bowl of grain will transform your morning meal into a gold mine of omega-3 unsaturated fats; only two tablespoons contains over 100% of your prescribed day by day admission for those heart-solid fats. Flaxseed, which has a nutty flavor, additionally is wealthy in fiber and lignan, a cell reinforcement that has been appeared to secure against bosom malignant growth.
An expression of alert: Whole flaxseeds will go through your body without being processed, so make sure to get them ground or granulate them yourself with an espresso or zest processor.
10. Blueberries
Crisp or solidified, these little superfruits pack a major cancer prevention agent punch. Or on the other hand even better, a whirlwind of punches: Studies recommend that eating blueberries consistently can help improve everything from memory and engine abilities to circulatory strain and digestion. (Wild blueberries, specifically, have one of the most astounding centralizations of the amazing cancer prevention agents known as anthocyanins.)
Blueberries are likewise lower in calories than a great deal of different organic products (they contain only 80 for each container), so you can heap them onto your oat without stressing over your waistline.
11. Strawberries
"Berries are superfoods in light of the fact that they're so high in cell reinforcements without being high in calories," Giovinazzo says. One measure of strawberries, for example, contains your full prescribed everyday admission of nutrient C, alongside high amounts of folic corrosive and fiber.
Strawberries are useful for your ticker, as well. A recent report found that ladies were more averse to show at least a bit of kindness assault over an 18-year time span on the off chance that they ate multiple servings of strawberries or blueberries every week. (Strawberries, similar to blueberries, are a decent wellspring of anthocyanins.)
12. Espresso
That coffee doesn't simply wake you up. Espresso drinking has been connected to lower danger of a few ailments, (for example, diabetes and prostate disease), and it might even enable you to live more. Scientists presume the blend of caffeine and cancer prevention agents are in charge of a large number of watched medical advantages. (A recent report found that espresso is the main wellspring of cell reinforcements in the U.S. diet, trust it or not.)
Obviously, stacking espresso up with cream and sugar may eradicate any potential advantages. So avoid the extravagant enhanced beverages, and stay with skim milk.
13. Tea
Not an espresso individual? Tea has a really great list of qualifications of medical advantages, as well. Since it has less caffeine, it hydrates you more adequately than espresso, and it's additionally a rich wellspring of the resistance boosting cell reinforcements known as catechins.
All tea (dark, green, or white) gives cancer prevention agents, yet green tea might be most beneficial of all. Research recommends that drinking five mugs multi-day can expand your body's digestion and help you lose more weight around the center.
14. Melon
Any organic product is a decent expansion to your morning meal, Giovinazzo says, and melon is no special case. A six-ounce serving (approximately a quarter-melon) contains only 50 calories and a full 100% of your suggested day by day admission of both nutrient C and nutrient An, an essential supplement for smooth, more youthful looking skin.
What's more, as most melons, the melon has a high water focus, which implies it will enable you to remain hydrated and keep you feeling full until noon.
15. Kiwi
This fluffy little organic product has around 65 milligrams of nutrient C per serving—almost as much as an orange. It's likewise wealthy in potassium and copper and contains more fiber per ounce than a banana, which makes it a decent guide to absorption. (In one investigation, eating two kiwis per day for one month diminished clogging in individuals with bad-tempered inside disorder.)
Kiwis are marginally tart. They're heavenly independent of anyone else, however, on the off chance that you lean toward a better flavor, have a go at blending them with strawberries and bananas in a smoothie or organic product serving of mixed greens.

Topical SEO: 7 Advanced Concepts of Link Relevance & Google Rankings
Posted by Cyrus-Shepard
Links matter for SEO. A lot.
Most marketers understand that links to websites count as “votes” on the web. Google — and other search engines — use these votes to rank web pages in search results. The more votes a page accumulates, the better that page’s chances of ranking in search results.
This is the popularity part of Google’s algorithm, described in the original PageRank patent. But Google doesn’t stop at using links for popularity. They’ve invented a number of clever ways to use links to determine relevance and authority — i.e. what is this page about and is it a trusted answer for the user’s search query?
To rank in Google, it’s not simply the number of votes you receive from popular pages, but the relevance and authority of those links as well.
The principals Google may use grow complex quickly, but we’ve included a number of simple ways to leverage these strategies for more relevant rankings at the bottom of the post.
1. Anchor text
In the beginning, there was the original PageRank patent, which changed the way search engines worked. It talked about anchor text a lot:
“Thus, even though the text of the document itself may not match the search terms, if the document is cited by documents whose titles or backlink anchor text match the search terms, the document will be considered a match.”
In a nutshell, if a page links to you using the anchor text “hipster pizza,” there’s a good chance your page is about pizza — and maybe hipsters.
If many pages link to you using variations of “pizza”— i.e. pizza restaurant, pizza delivery, Seattle pizza — then Google can see this as a strong ranking signal.
(In fact, so powerful is this effect, that if you search Google for “hipster pizza” here in Seattle, you’ll see our target for the link above ranking on the first page.)
How to leverage Anchor Text for SEO:
Volumes could be written on this topic. Google’s own SEO Starter Guide recommends a number of anchor text best practices, among them:
Use (and seek) descriptive anchor text that describes what your page is about
Avoid generic anchor text, off-topic anchor text
Keep anchor text concise – no more than a few words
While some Google patents discuss ignoring links with irrelevant anchor text, other Google patents propose looking at the text surrounding the anchor text for additional context, so keep that in mind.
A word of caution: While optimizing your anchor text is good, many SEOs over the years have observed that too much of a good thing can hurt you. Natural anchor text on the web is naturally varied.
Check out the variety of anchor text to Moz’s page on Domain Authority, illustrated here using Link Explorer.
Over-optimization can signal manipulation to Google, and many SEOs recommend a strategy of anchor text variety for better rankings.

2. Hub and authority pages
In the early days of Google, not long after Larry Page figured out how to rank pages based on popularity, the Hilltop algorithm worked out how to rank pages on authority. It accomplished this by looking for “expert” pages linking to them.
An expert page is a document that links to many other topically relevant pages. If a page is linked to from several expert pages, then it is considered an authority on that topic and may rank higher.
A similar concept using “hub” and “authority” pages was put forth by Jon Kleinberg, a Cornell professor with grants from Google and other search engines. Kleinberg explains:
“…a good hub is a page that points to many good authorities; a good authority is a page that is pointed to by many good hubs.” – Authoritative Sources in a Hyperlinked Environment (PDF)
While we can’t know the degree to which these concepts are used today, Google acquired the Hilltop algorithm in 2003.
How to leverage Authority Pages for SEO:
A common practice of link builders today is to seek links from “Resource Pages.” These are basically Hub/Expert pages that link out to helpful sites around a topic. Scoring links on these pages can often help you a ton.
Additional Resources: Resource Page Link Building
3. Reasonable Surfer
All links are not created equal.
The idea behind Google’s Reasonable Surfer patent is that certain links on a page are more important than others, and thus assigned increase weight. Examples of more important links include:
Prominent links, higher up in the HTML
Topically relevant links, related to both the source document and the target document.
Conversely, less important links include:
“Terms of Service” and footer links
Banner ads
Links unrelated to the document
Because the important links are more likely to be clicked by a “reasonable surfer,” a topically relevant link can carry more weight than an off-topic one.
“…when a topical cluster associated with the source document is related to a topical cluster associated with the target document, the link has a higher probability of being selected than when the topical cluster associated with the source document is unrelated to the topical cluster associated with the target document.” – United States Patent: 7716225
How to leverage Reasonable Surfer for SEO:
The key with leveraging Reasonable Surfer for SEO is simply: work to obtain links that are more likely to get clicked.
This means that you not only benefit from getting links from prominent areas of high-traffic pages, but the more relevant the link is to the topic of the hosting page, the more benefit it may provide.
Neither page topics/anchor texts have to be an exact match, but it helps if they are in the same general area. For example, if you were writing about “baseball,” links with relevant anchor text from pages about sports, equipment, athletes, training, exercise, tourism, and more could all help boost rankings more than less relevant links.
4. Topic-sensitive PageRank
Despite rumors to the contrary, PageRank is very much alive and well at Google.
PageRank technology can be used to distribute all kinds of different ranking signals throughout a search index. While the most common examples are popularity and trust, another signal is topical relevance, as laid out in this paper by Taher Haveliwala, who went on to become a Google software engineer.
The original concept works by grouping “seed pages” by topic (for example, the Politics section of the New York Times). Every link out from these pages passes on a small amount of Topic-Sensitive PageRank, which is passed on through the next set of links, and so on.
In the example above, 2 identical pages target “Football”. Both have the same number of links, but the first one has more relevant Topic-Sensitive PageRank from a linking sports page. Hence, it ranks higher.
How to leverage topic-sensitive PageRank for SEO:
The concept is simple. When obtaining links, try to get links from pages that are about the same topic you want to rank for. Also, get links from pages that are themselves linked to by authoritative pages on the same topic.
5. Phrase-based indexing
Phrase-based indexing can be a tough concept for SEOs to wrap their heads around.
What’s important to understand is that phrase-based indexing allows search engines to score the relevancy of any link by looking for related phrases in both the source and target pages. The more related phrases, the higher the score.
In the example below, the first page with the anchor text link “US President” may carry more weight because the page also contains several other phrases related to “US President” and “John Adams.”
In addition to ranking documents based on the most relevant links, phrase-based indexing allows search engines to consider less relevant links as well, including:
Discounting spam and off-topic links: For example, an injected spam link to a gambling site from a page about cookie recipes will earn a very low outlink score based on relevancy and would carry less weight.
Fighting “Google Bombing”: For those that remember, Google bombing is the art of ranking a page highly for funny or politically-motivated phrases by “bombing” it with anchor text links, often unrelated to the page itself. Phrase-based indexing can stop Google bombing by scoring the links for relevance against the actual text on the page. This way, irrelevant links can be discounted.
How to leverage phased-based indexing for SEO:
Beyond anchor text and the general topic/authority of a page, it’s helpful to seek links from pages with related phrases.
This is especially helpful for on-page SEO and internal linking — when you optimize your own pages and link to yourself. Some people use LSI keywords for on-page optimization, though evidence that this helps SEO is disputed.
Solid keyword research typically provides a starting point to identify related keyword phrases. Below are closely related phrases to “best SEO tools” found using Keyword Explorer.
6. Local inter-connectivity
Local inter-connectivity refers to a reranking concept that reorders search results based on measuring how often each page is linked to by all the other pages.
To put it simply, when a page is linked to from a number of high-ranking results, it is likely more relevant than a page with fewer links from the same set of results.
This also provides a strong hint as to the types of links you should be seeking: pages that already rank highly for your target term.
How to leverage local inter-connectivity for SEO:
Quite simply, one of the easiest ways to rank is to obtain topically relevant links from sites that already rank for the term you are targeting.
Oftentimes, links from page 1 results can be quite difficult to obtain, so it’s helpful to look for links that:
Rank for variations of your target terms
Are further down in Google’s results pages
Rank well for different, but still topically-related terms
7. The golden question
If the above concepts seem complex, the good news is you don’t have to actually understand the above concepts when trying to build links to your site.
To understand if a link is topically relevant to your site, simply ask yourself the golden question of link building: Will this link bring engaged, highly qualified visitors to my website?
The result of the golden question is exactly what Google engineers are trying to determine when evaluating links, so you can arrive at a good end result without understanding the actual algorithms.
How to leverage the golden question for SEO:
Above all else, try to build links that bring engaged, high-value visitors to your site.
If you don’t care about the visitors a link may bring, why should Google care highly about the link?
SEO tips for topically relevant links
Consider this advice when thinking about links for SEO:
DO use good, descriptive anchor text for your links. This applies to internal links, outlinks to other sites, and links you seek from non-biased external sites.
DO seek relationships from authoritative, topically relevant sites. These include sites that rank well for your target keyword and “expert” pages that link to many authority sites. (For those interested, Majestic has done some interesting work around Topical Trust Flow.)
DO seek links from relevant pages. This includes examining the title, body, related phrases, and intent of the page to ensure its relevance to your target topic.
DO seek links that people are likely to click. The ideal link is often both topically relevant and placed in a prominent position.
AVOID generic or non-descriptive anchor text.
AVOID over-optimizing your links. This includes repetitive use of exact match anchor text and keyword stuffing.
AVOID manipulative link building. Marie Haynes has written an excellent explanation of the kinds of unnatural links that you likely want to avoid at all costs.
Finally, DO try to earn and attract links to your site with high quality, topically relevant content. Big thanks to Bill Slawski and his blog SEO by the Sea, which acted as a starting point of research for many of these concepts.
