I mentioned this in my rambling tag essay but then i thought it might be worth mentioning in the actual post.
In my experience, in the lastest versions of MS Word, the grammar checker is virtually non-functional. It now consistently tells me to change things I know to be correct, to the extent that I had to just turn it off. For example, it no longer reliably understands subject-verb agreement/pluralisation rules. It was always for shit when it came to punctuation (it had a vendetta against commas), but there was a time when it did alright with conjugation and other grammar principles. In my experience, this is no longer the case.
writer survey question time:
inspired by seeing screencaps where the software is offering (terrible) style advice because I haven't used a software that has a grammar checker for my stories in like a decade
if you use multiple applications, pick the one you use most often.
#I don't write much anymore but when i do it's either ms word or a plain text editor.#& ms word's grammar checker is garbage now (basically nonfunctional/unreliable. it doesnt even correctly understand subject-verb agreement)#(something it certainly knew in older versions)#so increasingly I use the .txt editor and just...hope i can spell that day#also bc most computers have .txt editor for free#also bc i find the mandatory old computer/ typewriter font of it all charming.#i've been transcribing/editing a family ''cookbook'' my mother and her siblings collated in the 90s#and that's basically the only thing I've written in like 3 years#''but charlotte why didnt you just scan it?'' I wanted the capacity to correct/amend things.#''why should I believe some random bitch from the internet about this?'' by all means don't take my word for it#but like. also don't trust Word to check your grammar. it will have u sounding illiterate.#like i would have argued 10 yrs ago that you shouldnt trust word for grammar and that was back when it was mostly fine#now it's junk. trash garbage.
