Arcane Characters That Are Big of Heart and Dumb of Ass
Pairing: Vi, Sevika, Vander, Jayce, Loris, Ambessa x Fem!Reader
Tags: fluff, dating, flirting, cuddles, kissing, sparing, muscles, protectiveness
Ko-Fi | Rules | Fandoms and Characters
A/N: This came to me today during my work break. I love himbos and whatever the female version of it is!
PURE OF HEART: She will do anything, put herself in any kind of danger to protect you. Vi is ready to get into a fight with anyone, stand up to anyone if they're bothering you. The bruises might be there after but she knows you'll help her get patched up. Depending on where the bruises are she might get some kisses.
DUMB OF ASS: Charges head first into any situation and that more often than not gets her hurt. One would think she learned to use hear head a bit more by now. And just in terms of headbutting her opponent. However she defends her attitude by saying that she's the muscle here, so you should let her take care of things her way.
PURE OF HEART: First of all she doesn't want anyone knowing she has a soft spot for you. She is very aggressive in her flirting both in public and in private but when you're up close, in her lap she will whisper sweet nothings into your ear. After which she will bite it. Don't blame her, she has an image to uphold.
DUMB OF ASS: Sevika has always been a badass in Zaun, but not for her brains. As respected as she is some also see her as a glorified bodyguard that's now dating her boss's cute secretary. She hears these rumors of course but they don't phase her when she's had a few shots of her favorite drink. Not her best moment.
PURE OF HEART: He is a family man to the bone. And he sees you as his wife even though you're not officially married yet. It won't stop him from grabbing you around the hips and pulling you into a kiss, his tongue tasting of tabaco and your favorite drink. Yes, your favorite, because he wants to taste good when he kisses you.
DUMB OF ASS: While Vander might be one of the de facto leaders in Zaun he's made his fair share of dumb choices. He's forgotten to lock up more than once, leading to the people thinking the bar open and he walked out in his underwear. What made it more embarrassing is that you were right behind him, wearing just his shirt.
PURE OF HEART: Everyone who met Jayce even once can see that he has a heart of gold. There isn't a challenge he won't try to take out, be it with brains or brawn. Knowing he's smart hasn't stopped you from visiting him a few times in the forge and appreciating the way the sweat rolls down his muscled body. He even flexes for you.
DUMB OF ASS: The amount of times he accidentally burned himself because he was too busy making out with you is astounding. He picks you up easily enough. But then backs up a bit too much, touching or stepping too close to the heat of the forge. Either that or he knocks important tools down when he places you on his table.
PURE OF HEART: No one's got your back like Loris has your back. He's is one of the most supportive boyfriends you could ask for, husband material really. Whenever he notices you're having a bad day he will beckon you over and scoop you into his big arms. You're not getting away from him or his cuddles until you feel better.
DUMB OF ASS: Among the Enforcers he has always been known as the muscle, and as more than a bit of drinker. But he also tells the best stories. He can be a little crude sometimes, flirting with you and forgetting there are other people in the room. The next morning everyone is smirking at him and he has no idea why.
PURE OF HEART: Ambessa will crush anyone who has anything bad to say about her, her family, or anyone in her army. Her strength is in her physique, strategy and loyalty of her people. But on occasion she can show her softer side, when it's just the two of you. It's one of her weaknesses, that cute smile of yours that she would do anything for.
DUMB OF ASS: One of her favorite ways to flirt, and have foreplay, is to spar with you. However that tends to attract more than a few eyes. She always acts insanely possessive over you in those moments, her head still in the fight but also getting in between you and her soldiers. it ends up looking a bit like a dance, much to everyone's amusement.

It's fanny how some people call her evil era.
We never saw her kill an innocent person, even when my friend saw the show he is not a fan of Arcane but he saw a lot of comments about it and I also urged him to watch it after all the excitement around it when I asked him about his opinion on the show and especially the character of Caitlyn he told me, he expected after all the posts and comments about her that she would go to Zaun and kill people with her gun he didn't expect that she just wears a costume that looks like a vampire and looks tough and mean, she would get this much hate. He even asked me why people don't talk or blame Ambessa isn't she the main reason behind most of the problems in this season and also Singed or even Silco and his allies?
I couldn't answer him except that people have double standards and are hypocrites because their criticism of Caitlyn's character is not because she did one bad thing but because she is from Piltover and an enforcer. I'm sure if Caitlyn was from Zaun and did worse things they would sympathize with her and love her, so their criticism is so hypocritical and has double standards. In short, their criticism of a character is not because she did bad things, but because of who she is and where she is from.
They forget that silco kills a lot of people, mainly people from the undercity, even kids, LOL have put a mini game on the clien and there you could find out that Silco use kids as lab rat to test the chem tanks.
And I'm sure now someone will come and tell me that Caitlyn used the gas on all of Zaun and killed people with it. Seriously idiot where did you get this? Can you show me a picture from the show that people died because of gray, and if it's true then the characters must are talking about it, that Caitlyn uses gray to kill innocent people. So this claim is not true, we saw at the beginning of episode 3 how Caitlyn used the gas strategically and not randomly and Amanda confirmed that. So she used it to catch gangs there. Because logically, 5 people wouldn't go to catch hundreds of gang members that easily, and also if one of the people got hurt Ekko would have talked about it and we know that Ekko is the most loyal person to his people, so even Ekko himself didn't complain about using gray, yes he and Scar were talking about the gangs that were working with Silco, and they didn't care about gray, why? Because this gas didn't hurt them.
Even if it hurt them and that using it was an evil act, why didn't you say this when Jinx used it on Piltover and injured innocent people, women and children, she didn't target enforcers for example, Jinx use the Grey randomly unlike Caitlyn, but is anyone talking about this? Of course not. And worse when I saw comments saying that Jinx should blow up Piltover again and eliminate the people of Piltover. Like some people have shown their true colors, that they don't care if a character did something bad or good, all they care about is who this character is.
And because Jinx is from Zaun and they have every right to do bad things, but Piltover doesn't even if they do good things they are still bad, what a shallow and ridiculous thinking. some Arcane fandom are probably the most stupid fandom nowadays, to them everyone from Zaun is a perfect angel who never do nothing wrong, everyone from Piltover is a monster with no feelings
The show is not black and white, that only exists in Disney movies, go and watch it if you are this kind of boring and traditional storytelling, Arcane proves every day that this show is not for everyone and if you want to enjoy it you have to open your mind well and be open-minded, and most importantly put politics and real life issues aside, and enjoy this fantasy world with flawed characters and good writing. (This show is not designed to solve political issues at the end of the day. It is a show based on a video game)
Morally, I do not agree with a Caitlyn's Evil Cop Era. The lesbian in me, however, really likes that dumbass coat.
Like. Really likes it.

Hello!
I’d like to request a oneshot with Kalim x fem s/o where it dawns on Kalim that his s/o is the only girl in an all boys school and now he’s starting to notice every stare and gift other guys are trying to give his s/o causing him to be a bit jealous and protective
(I hope the reader being fem is okay bc if not then you can totally ignore this request!!)
"Me jealous?!?...I'm totally jealous"
Kalim Al Asim x Fem!Reader
Summary: Kalim realizes he's not the only one who wants your love and attention
Cw- none, just fluff
Word count: 1545
A/N: GAH sorry this took so long I've been so busy with finals; also imma be so fr I basically blacked out when writing this so if it's not perfect again y'all always can leak my address;
Thank y'all sm for 100+ followers already like 🙁 y'all are so cool pls don't explode
Night Naven College was an all-boys school. Always has been. You were the first exception to that. You were the only girl who ended up becoming a student.
When Kalim first met you he never paid mine to that fact. To Kalim you were Just another student ; a new friend to be made. However, after getting closer to you the housewarden couldn't deny the fact you made his chest feel all fuzzy.
He's always surrounding himself with people but you're his favorite person to be around. He will always try and seek you out in a crowd because you were the one who made his heart beat so fast.
He loved the way you'd run a hand through his hair whenever he'd lay on your lap or the fact you were always down with whatever he came up with. How you truly did care for the people around you.
You were perfect in Kalim’s eyes.
Kalim ended up mentioning these feelings to Jamil offhandedly; Which after a little talk with him. He came to the conclusion he liked you. Not just in his usual friendly way either. He was head over heels.
However you being the only girl meant you had many eyes on you no doubt. It's always been that way since you became a student however Kalim only started paying attention to it once he recognized his crush.
He couldn't help the way his chest turned whenever another would give you big puppy eyes or would be overly friendly with you. He didn't get it. You weren't his…yet. So why does he get jealous so easily?
He couldn't blame others for liking you. You were well you. You were smart, kind and pretty, how couldn't they fall for you? He just wished he had all your attention sometimes even if it did feel selfish.
He'd often subconsciously glare at others who linger on you too long. He'd also be quick to kill you closer to him in a crowded area or lead you somewhere else all together just to get your full attention. It was clear to most people he had a thing for you.
Kalim fidgeted and watched as the pink haired boy shyly handed you a bracelet. It was just made out of colorful rubber bands. He could give you something much nicer… but you looked so happy receiving it.
Was it the thought that counted? Is that why you took it and smiled so brightly? Kalim slightly pouted to himself. He felt so uncomfortable. He wasn't used to being jealous. He wanted to be the one to make you smile like that.
The snowy hair bit his lip as he remembered the conversation he and Jamil had a few days earlier.
“You know Kalim you should tell her how you feel, she's not exactly going to be on the market forever you know” Jamil spoke, dusting the shelf that had started to collect dust.
Kalim huffed and groaned. Jamil was right. You weren't going to just be up for grabs forever. But how would he just tell you how he feels…
This was too complicated! Kalim wasn't used to not being able to express how he felt. He wants to tell you that you mean a lot to him. Which he does all the time but he wants you to know he doesn't mean it in the same way he means to his other friends.
He wants you to know you're special, that you're an even brighter star compared to him. Yet he's afraid that he'll mess everything up. What if you don't feel the same way about him? Kalims frown deepened and he sighed, slumping his shoulders.
Kalim played with the bracelet in his hands. Was this good enough? He made it himself with charms that reminded him of you. He didn't register the sound of footsteps approaching behind him.
“Good afternoon Kalim!” your voice rang out. The house warden basically sprung up, a smile spreading across his face upon hearing your voice. He turned and shoved the bracelet into his pocket.
“Hi, name!” He chirped, hugging you tightly. You let out a soft chuckle before wrapping your arms around him as well. He pulled away with a big dopey smile. You tilted your head and looked around.
“Jamil, is he not with you?” you asked. Kalim shook his head. You let out a hum before shrugging lightly. You flashed him a smile causing blood to rush to his cheeks.
“Well it's nice to catch you alone for once you always seem to be around someone, sometimes it's nice when it's just the two of us” you spoke, Kalim’s red eyes watched you.
He couldn't help the way his smile got bigger at your words. He felt the same way; it made his heart leap.
“Yup…just the two of us!” He exclaimed, his voice a little higher in pitch. He stuffed his hands in his pockets, his fingers running over the bracelet. He was about to speak before you cut him off.
“You don't have any more classes today right?” You asked, turning your full attention to the house warden once more. Kalim nodded his head.
“Great, would you mind if I hung out in scarabia with you?” You said with a small tilt of your head.
“No, I wouldn't mind at all!” The snowy hair perked up.
On the walk there it was like Kalim was hyper aware of every guy to look in your direction. It made him feel so bad for feeling so bitter about it but he couldn't help it. Couldn't these guys just mind their own business?
You seemed to take notice of his demeanor being off“You okay, Kalim?” you asked softly, your voice laced with concern. Your hand gently tugging on his sleeve.
Kalim blinked, snapping out of his thoughts. “Huh? Oh! Yeah, I’m fine! Totally fine!” He gave you a wide smile, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes. Odd.
You raised an eyebrow, unconvinced. “Are you sure? You’ve been kind of quiet.”
He swallowed nervously. You knew him too well. “I guess… I’ve just been thinking a lot lately,” he admitted, his voice softer.
You tilted your head, curiosity sparkling in your eyes. “Thinking? About what?”
Kalim hesitated for a moment before taking a deep breath. “I’ve been thinking about… you,” he confessed, his cheeks flushing a deep red. He couldn’t meet your gaze, his eyes glued to the ground.
“And how… you make me really happy.”
His words caught you off guard and you looked up at him. “I make you happy?” you repeated, a small smile tugging at your lips.
Kalim nodded quickly, his usual energy bubbling to the surface despite his nerves. “Yeah! Like, more than anyone else. I love being around you, and I always want to make you smile. But lately, I’ve been feeling… different.”
“And what do you mean by different?” You spoke moving closer to him. Your chest swirling with an …off but comforting feeling.
“Well it's just I… I get all weird whenever other guys start paying attention to you…” He admitted sheepishly. Your grin turned a bit more teasing.
“Awh, sounds like you're jealous,” you teased. His face redder a bit and he looked away.
“I …am” he responded. You weren't expecting him to just openly admit it. You blinked and recollected your thoughts. You cleared your throat before speaking.
“Well that's actually kind of nice… to know you care enough to get jealous over me out of all people” you said, your tone a bit quieter now.
“Well of course I care about you…”
It got quiet for a bit. Neither of you speaking, just watching each other.
Kalim fidgeted with the bracelet still in his pocket, finally pulling it out and holding it out to you. “ Oh I made this for you. I’ve been trying to find the right time to give it to you…"
Your eyes softened as you reached out to take the bracelet, your fingers brushing against his. The charms were small but thoughtful .
“Kalim… it’s beautiful,” you whispered, slipping it onto your wrist.
“Thank y-”
“I-I like you!” he blurted out, his words tumbling over each other in his excitement. “Not just as a friend. I mean… I really really like you. You’re amazing, and I don’t want to keep it to myself anymore.”
Your eyes widened in surprise, but your smile grew even brighter. “Kalim…”
He held his breath, waiting for your response. His heart pounded so loudly he was sure you could hear it.
“I like you too,” you said softly. “I’ve liked you for a while now.”
Kalim’s eyes lit up like fireworks, a beaming grin spreading across his face. “You do? Really?”
You nodded, reaching out to take his hand. “Really. You’re the brightest part of my day, Kalim.”
Unable to contain his excitement, Kalim pulled you into a tight hug, spinning you around. You yelped in surprise.
As he set you down, still holding your hand, he looked at you with a warmth that made your cheeks flush.
“So… does this mean I can be your boyfriend?” he asked with a hopeful grin.
You chuckled softly and nodded. “I’d love that.”
Kalim’s heart soared. He never imagined this moment could feel so perfect. You were his now — and he was yours. Nothing could make him happier.
Jamil would never hear the end of how much he loves his girlfriend.

Falling into Sin with the Black Tiger ~ Gilbert's 4th Birthday
▪︎ A Story from his POV

I thought the beast of destruction was a greedy creature.
Countries and people alike, can go to any lengths to get what they want.
Despite my self-confidence, I didn't realise it until I was asked, "What do you want?"
I hadn't really thought much about what lay ahead after obtaining everything.
Emma: Gil, aren’t you going to sleep?
After returning to my room from the ballroom, I was gazing aimlessly at the sky when Emma, who had been lying down, suddenly sat up.
Gilbert: I thought I’d bask in the afterglow of my birthday a little longer.
Emma: Then I’ll join you.
She embraced me from behind and the cold night air turned into warmth.
(I noticed that you weren’t sleeping and was waiting for you to join my company…..)
(If I say it out loud, I might get into trouble.)
Gilbert: You should go to sleep.
Emma: I can’t sleep.
Gilbert: Even though we did all sorts of things?
Emma: ……
Just by lightly tracing the hand that had been hugging me, Emma began to get flustered.
The corners of my mouth quirked as I felt the quick increase in heartbeat from my back.
(Maybe I went too far.)
--*flashback from the dining room*--
Emma: Mmm….aahh…your fingers…nghh
Gilbert: You want me to take them out? But I’m not moving them.
Emma: Nnn....you’re lying….
Gilbert: You know I hate lies.
Emma: Aaaahh
Gilbert: See, you’re acting on your own again.
Emma: No…Gil….you just bit my breasts.
Gilbert: It’s cruel to blame others.
Emma: A…ahhh...
--*flashback ends*--
(But it couldn’t be helped. She had a face that was saying “please eat me”.)
When we returned to my room from the dining room, or when we took a bath to wash our messy bodies….
I liked Emma’s reactions, how she tried her best to respond despite being embarrassed, and so I ended up being a little too mean.
Emma: Maybe because of all the things that happened to me…I can’t sleep at all.
Gilbert: You’re right. It’s no wonder you can’t sleep if you’re this anxious.
Emma: …So you can hear my heartbeat.
As Emma tried to move away feeling flustered, I grabbed her hand and pushed her down onto the bed.
Pressing my ear against her soft chest, I could hear her heartbeat more clearly.
Gilbert: It’s becoming faster again.
Emma: That’s how much I love you.
Gilbert: Hehe, thanks?
(The date has changed and so my birthday is over now.)
(You give me what I want every day.)
(I know you’re the only one who will never betray me, even without any threats or domination.)
As she caresses my hair in a pampering manner, the drowsiness is overshadowed by a sinful feeling.
When I poked the bulge visible through her negligee, a sweet sigh escaped from Emma’s mouth.
Emma: What are you doing?
Gilbert: It was right in front of me.
Emma: …Not now.
Gilbert: Because it will come back again?
Emma nodded without understanding a thing.
Gilbert: If you really don’t like it, I can stop….
I pulled up the hem of her nightgown and stroked my fingers between her legs.
It was so wet that it couldn’t have been caused by simple teasing, and it immediately swallowed my fingers.
Gilbert: Is this why you can’t sleep?
Emma: Ahh…again..
Gilbert: It’s a problem to be loved this much, isn’t it?
If I expose Emma’s weakness deep inside her belly, her poor, tormented lower abdomen will soon start dripping with her honey.
Gilbert: Does this mean ‘I love you’?
Emma: That’s….right…
Gilbert: Heehee, I see.
(No matter how many times I experience your ‘love’, it always feels good.)
I massaged her breasts over her negligee, also moving my fingers inside her to scoop out her arousal.
The love I sensed in her warm gaze was genuine.
Even though I’m such a terrible man, Emma always loves me.
(You asked me to be selfish on my birthday this year….)
(I thought my last selfish wish in life was to meet you.)
(I made up a reason to go to Rhodolite and get involved with Emma, even if it meant ruining her life.)
(I had never thought of anything more selfish than that, and I could never think of anything else.)
When I kissed a breathless Emma, she put her hands behind my head as if welcoming me.
I was moved by the way she kissed me, as if conveying that she wasn’t opposed to this at all.
(….Now that I think about it, it seemed obvious.)
(It’s only recently that I’ve started thinking about my future.)
When our lips part, a thread hangs in the dim light.
Emma: You too, Gil….
Gilbert: Hmm?
Emma’s hand rested on my cheek, and I was smiling kindly, too kind for a villain.
Emma: You act like you love me.
Gilbert: Hehe, isn’t that obvious?
Gilbert: I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t love you.
I pull out my fingers from inside her and help her sit up.
Emma seemed to understand my intentions immediately, and blushing bright red, she climbed on to my lap.
(I’m spending time now that shouldn’t have existed in the first place.)
(And if you plan on staying here from now on….)
(Maybe it is a good idea to take some time to think of my own future.)
(Most of my memories are already made up of blood and corpses, painted all black…)
(The memories we make give me hope for the future.)
Emma lowered herself on me, and hugged me tightly.
Emma: Haah…Gil…
Gilbert: You’re okay with moving on your own again?
Emma: That’s…not true…
Emma said “that’s not true”, but as she moved her hips she lets out a small shriek.
It seemed she had moved unconsciously, and again, I couldn’t help but laugh.
(When I’m with you, I feel so happy.)
(…I’m sure Emma knows very well what it means for me to be happy.)
I secretly watched Emma bustling about preparing for my birthday, but this year too, I couldn’t keep a smile on my face.
I imagine Emma had her own thoughts about giving her blessings to the great villain.
Even so, I didn’t sense any hesitation.
She had already made up her mind to celebrate this blood-soaked man.
Emma: I think…you’ll be asked…'what you want to do’ next year as well.
Emma: So please, give it…a lot of thought.
Emma: I’ll make all your wishes come true.
Gilbert: Does that mean you won't be listening to me until next year?
Emma: If you have one now…please…ah
I intentionally move my body and Emma’s expression changes again.
I never get tired of her expressions filled with ‘love’.
(For now, all I can say is….)
Gilbert: I’d love to go on a date with you again.
Emma: Like…the other day?
Gilbert: Yeah. I like spending casual times like that.
Emma: Me too.
Gilbert: After that….
Bodies intertwined, lips pressed together, heartbeats synchronized, and then our gazes meet and we smile together.
Gilbert: Will you celebrate my birthday next year too?
(And commit many more sins…)
(Will you fall with me?)
[Chapter 3] [Masterlist]
He loves her sooo much omg, I really LOVED this story. I'm so glad he's happy.
Also when he said he went to Rhodolite for her....god, I just hate to imagine him going there for her, only for her to end up with the other princes (in other routes). Even though Silvio's my favourite, I feel miserable.

i think the reason i am so obsessed with tommy is like... okay, prefacing all of this with "much of this is head canon/extrapolation from canon/my standard over identification with fictional characters. i don't expect other folks to see him the same way". also, as i wrote this i was like "huh, pretty sure i've said this before in slightly different words" so feel free to keep scrolling in search of an original thought i guess lol
i love to love. i love to look after people. i love to give them affection. i love to do things that broadcast loud and clear "hey! hey you! i care about you!" i have always struggled with letting people do the same for me. if anything was going to derail my current relationship early on, it would have been that - without intending to, i take away people's agency by not giving them opportunities to do those things for me. it's a fucked up way to be - to give and give and give, and to stop other people from giving back. it creates an imbalance, an inequality, that means a relationship is not going to last, and if it does last, it'll be bad.
i keep gnawing at a line in a wip i have about tommy post-breakup meeting a new guy and thinking that he likes the guy's sharp edges and that he didn't give buck a chance to show any sharp edges because they spent six months having amazing sex and Being Cute. he was Doing Boyfriend Things. and i don't think it was fake, as such. but i think it was surface. he gave affection and he gave care, and you can give all of those things without every really giving anything of yourself.
i think, given the chance, buck would have been a great partner to tommy. but i don't think, based on what we saw, that he was given that chance. he was given the chance for a soft landing into his first (apparently unexamined) queer relationship. he was given the chance to be adored and to be a little demanding and a little bratty. he was given the chance to be looked after. just going on what we've seen on screen, it doesn't look like he was given the chance to be a partner.
so maybe it wasn't just that tommy thought buck needed/would want to explore other options somewhere down the line (and here's where we veer into head canon territory) but maybe it was that that weird ass conversation made him think - oh, he doesn't see me. oh, i've been here before. and maybe he's been there with someone less adorable than buck. someone who was more intentional about taking and taking, someone who didn't or wouldn't have given back, given the chance. and he knows how that ends. it ends with giving more and more of yourself, and getting less and less back. it ends with someone you thought you loved barely seeing you at all, it ends with you being Someone's Boyfriend. it ends with "tommy? who? yeah, that guy's boyfriend, right?" because you've made yourself into a source of someone else's comfort and security and you look down and realise there's nothing underneath your feet. it ends with resentment that you don't feel like you deserve to feel because you can't be mad that they don't take care of you when you've never showed them that you need taking care of.
so i think that's the tragedy of it for me. it really would have worked - if tommy was able to take. if buck was given a chance to give. there's not anyone to blame, unless you want to go through their lives and their histories and find the things and the people who made them the people who they are.

Vaggie is not a bad girlfriend.
I know there are some Vaggie haters out there and don't get me wrong I understand why. But you're hating her for the wrong reasons. Her character wasn't completely fleshed out right in my opinion and I think that's why so many people hate her character. She's a dependent and honestly can you blame her? Her entire life was killing sinners under the guise of helping heaven. She leaned on other sisters who were said to be "just like her." She depended on them because they were the only family she knew. That WE know of. Imagine being so close to someone and you make a decision out of complete mercy for someone else. Someone you see as innocent and in doing that, you're severely punished and abandoned by people you considered family. I could even say Vaggie has a touch of Stockholm syndrome but Charlie doesn't do this intentionally. You basically took two broken girls who suffer from abandonment issues and expected them to be stable. Let's be real for a couple in hell with abandonment issues, Stockholm syndrome, dependency issues, ect and they actually do come off to be the most healthy if not for one obvious factor. Vaggie's hidden past. Now let me be clear, the Stockholm syndrome bit is obviously not intentionally. Charlie is just doing her best to be helpful and help her out and in doing that Vaggie had a deep dependency in her. So much so that being honest about her past put her into possibly sever panic attacks. I wouldn't be surprised if Vaggie had tried and would have mental break downs because of it. After all, the people she knew she could trust with everything saw her, heard her spare someone and their reaction was to rip everything from her and leave her for the worst fate possible. Could you picture what could have happened if Vox, Alastor or hell forbid Valentino found her instead of Charlie. Especially Alastor of all people, imagine someone with Vaggie's determination and loyalty behind Alastor's command. Instead she was shown true kindness in a place that was suppose to hurt her, where the place that was known for good and kindness hurt her beyond words. Yes, she fucked up. She hid a lie for almost four years. I can understand every reason both parties have for being afraid/hurt and betrayed in a sense. Vaggie despite being in the best place never truly mentally healed from her pain. Not until her meeting with Carmilla did she truly accept her actions and move on for it thus gaining her wings back. Yes you could say it was her desire to protect her girlfriend but I also believe it was an acceptance that her way wasn't going to help in the long run.
Vaggie did everything she could to try and make up for the wrong she did, her not telling Charlie wasn't just hiding but it was her own silent torture. She believed she deserved to be hated and the idea of Charlie loving her despite her actions was far more insane then redemption itself. So in not telling her, she tortured herself further. Believing she did not deserve to be forgiven and every loving gesture, gentle kiss, touch was another knife in her heart telling her she deserved none of it and her guilt was her punishment. Vaggie was in her own personal hell, in her eyes, being loved over a lie. Not being able to tell the truth despite wanting too, her guilt and self loathing pushing her deeper into a pit she couldn't get out of alone. So her response was to push herself out of her comfort zone for Charlie, for the one person who truly showed her true kindness and love no matter what would happen to Vaggie, she'd do anything if it meant Charlie was happy, if it meant she could be forgiven for what she viewed as HER sins. Vaggie is not a bad girlfriend, She literally went to someone who had been confirmed to have murdered an exorcist. The value of her life is so low to her and all she clearly cares about is Charlie getting what she needs. if anything she's bad at self love and she's slowly working her way to loving herself as much as she loves Charlie. That's where I feel her arc is going, being better for herself and for Charlie. Sorry for the rant. Feel free to add your own comments, I obviously forgot some things xD Just went off on a rant about this cause I honestly despise all the hate Vaggie gets, as a girlfriend and as a character.

Asking the FLoc crayon [neon carrot] bc someone has to.
neon carrot: if you could give them any npc as a spouse, who would it be and why?
THIS IS SUCH A HARD QUESTION.
To address the obvious answer given recent activities: no i dont think he should marry Feducci, but he… might, if given the chance. The man CANONICALLY sent Sam 12 cellars of wine with a note reading "TO PASSIONS UNMATCHED" i dont think anyone can blame him for feeling like they had something special!!!! Feducci seems like he could make him very satisfied intimacy-wise but would also almost certainly Make Him Worse.
Samuel's constant difficulty with Marriage is that he isn't really… romantic in the traditional sense. HE HAS A LOT OF PHYSICAL DESIRE but romance rarely does anything for him outside of stories, and he gets antsy whenever he's locked in to a particular life plan. HOWEVER: he is usually too Catholic(TM) to really embrace a no-strings-attached lifestyle, and his tastes are well outside the typical Veilgarden hookup anyway (one of his most sensual experiences was getting murdered by an actual literal lance through the gut, so…). The real reason he bought multiple viric dreams of the Bishop of Southwark was that he was trying SO hard to Want Marriage, but even with someone so physically intense and driven, that dream of settling down for life isn't what he really wants; he just wants the part where they're wrestling by the fire.
The other complication is that he has finally found partners he can be happily intimate with: Peter and Jack (@little-red-notebook and @reliably-derogaffectionate's characters, respectively), to whom he is essentially a friend with benefits. He was best man at their wedding somewhat wistfully, but since they've both assured him that they still want him involved in their relationship, it feels very easy to be with them; a closeness he wants without the expectations that come with being a Spouse. It's still, you know, making love outside of marriage, but Samuel has never been good at avoiding that, and at least here he knows he's not leading anyone on or cheating on anyone.
An Ideal Marriage for Sam would involve some amount of polyamory to give him room for these inevitable, ah, extracurricular activities, someone that doesn't tie him down, ideally someone he can do physically dangerous things with and, importantly, have sex (these two activities can be combined). But I also think in an ideal world he would have someone who respects his own principles and doesn't try to smother his hope for compassion with duty, which feels like the big sticking point for a lot of the aggressive characters (like Southwark and Feducci) that Sam's attracted to.
I don't remember well enough to say how many of these points she hits, but I keep thinking of the Zubmariner from the Sunken River ES, as someone no-nonsense in a way Sam really respected and found attractive, but who also has people she cares about. She might be too cool to fall for this soggy loser, though, and the chances of her turning out to be a lesbian seem high. (Also Sam left her behind…. that's a choice he regrets, and I kinda wanna replay that story at some point, with the idea of him actually trying to go back for her). But in general, the idea of Samuel marrying a principled pirate where they both know their first love will always be the zee feels like something that could turn out to be a genuinely happy partnership for him. BUT WHO KNOWS maybe in a year I'll come back with a totally different answer I never saw coming.
#lmao sorry just talks Sams Feelings On Marriage instead of answering the question#fl crayon ask game#flondonposting#fl: the bloodstained deacon#sam is aromantic he just isnt ace and doesnt know what to do with himself#ftr Poor Edward is not here because i have too many thoughts abt him and that wouldve taken over the post#but the tldr is that I think it would just be kind of a bittersweet outcome for both of them#i think it could work out eventually but id need to write an entire fanfic to make it happen#ask shazz

An interpretation of Slenderman I love is the idea of him as a stalker, a predator, and a manipulator rather than a powerful or aggressive force. His tendrils and demon face/non-face? Cool as hell. No arguments there. But to me the way he's able to get into people heads and break them from the inside out the way he does is much more terrifying.
He's used force as a means of control before, such as with Kate, Masky, and Hoody, but he also leans heavily into manipulation tactics like he does with Alex, Toby, Cat Hunter, and Bones.
Slender, in my interpretation, manipulates and controls his proxies by taking away their identities and making them dependent on him. This can be seen in each of the proxies. Toby, Kate, Masky, Hoody, Cat Hunter, and Bones (just walk with me here) all had parts of their identities stolen by Slender in one way or another.
In my mind, Masky and Hoody were brought back by Slender/The Operator after the events of Marble Hornets to act as his proxies. Slender saw something in them, whether it be their strength, skill, cunningness, etc, and decided they were too useful to let go to waste. But, as their track records show, this isn't something they'd ever accept willingly, and so had parts of their identities taken when they were brought back to ensure their loyalty to Slender wouldn't slip (why wasn't Alex brought back? idk ask Skully i haven't read the MH comics yet. For now lets blame it on his temper making him too likely to step out of line.)
Kate I'm admittedly undecided on as of right now. Her psyche is definitely damaged, having part's forcefully torn away as a result of Slenders torment, but whether or not her animalistic behaviour is a learnt behaviour in order to cope with what's been done to her or a direct result of Slenders torment is unknown. She won't say, and she won't leave either. That's not an option for her anymore, she knows that much at least.
Cat hunter is a mix of both, in a way. His push to become a proxy was forceful, with Slender physically making him kill his father, but its the blows to his self worth and constant reminder of his actions that cause him to remain as one. Guilt has taken away his self worth, and all he can do is try fill the hole best he can with what he has
Toby had his memories from before his time with Slender removed, taking away any sense of identity he might've had before becoming a proxy and making him dependent on Slenders protection for survival. Where else would he go? He doesn't have anyone else, he's a wanted criminal. And besides, life with Slender is good. He clings to that false sense of freedom without even knowing why he holds it so dear. Why would he ever want to leave?
Bones has had her identity tampered with by Slender since she was young to the point she can't discern what parts of herself are truly herself and what parts were planted there by Slender. She grew up with his voice in her head, convincing her that his words are her own thoughts and that she can't be free unless she is with him. "That violence? That's normal. They don't understand you here, you don't have anyone. You're trapped and alone but I can set you free. Don't you want that?" She doesn't know who or even what she is without him and his "guidance". He's all she knows. He's all she has.
The proxies will never be free. They're going to die out there in those woods at the hands of a monster. And the worst part? Most of them don't even know they're trapped.

Most people aren't capable of reciprocal relationships and it makes them nervous.
You have to have two different sets of people. People who ask you for stuff and people who you ask for stuff.
It's tedious as hell.
But most people really really really don't like when someone who helped them asked them for things. And most people who like to help people who also ask them for help turn out to be like insane predators.
If you're not an insane predator but you grew up with insane predators, you grew up with no information about this because television and books all say that reciprocation is the way.
Most people who are willing to help people just basically have a random surplus of something they don't need and they want it to go to a good home.
It doesn't cost them anything.
Most people who ask you for help need to have faith in someone else's judgement and don't need help at all, they just need someone to tell them what they already know or want because they hate themselves. So like... they can't let you ask them for things because it makes them doubt if they got expert help from the right person.
It's always better to assume that if you can't get something on your own and you have to go through someone else to get it, it's because of insane predators intentionally building a bottleneck so that other people have to do things their way.
That's not okay. But you can't really do much about that other than find a way to do without whatever they block for everyone because they're insane predators and all they want to do is run everyone in the world through their little bottleneck over and over. They have no other goals. No other thoughts. They usually collect a lot of little minions who are afraid of them. They will eventually put you through it. It will break every bone in your body. Hopefully only metaphorically.
One day I hope someone shatters all the bottles at once.
But everyone blames the wrong things like "don't want to make life better for people just get in the bottle."
Always helping others but if i need help, everyone gets distant.

Hello! I've seen you say several times on here that you style yourself after an English country gentleman of, I think, the 1920s and 30s. I'm really interested in this time period and in social and cultural changes English people living between the first and second world war would have gone through (I blame Evelyn Waugh's Vile Bodies and the movie adaptation Bright Young Things, there's just this air of racing towards catastrophe and laughing about it that I find really compelling). I don't know if this is still in your wheelhouse but if it is could you recommend me some other fiction from or about this time period that deals with similar themes of the decline of the aristocracy and its effect on people coming into adulthood during that time? If not that's totally fine, it might be kind of a stretch to approach somebody interested in fashion. Thanks.
Heya, Anon! I'll leave this up for folks to comment on, as my knowledge is mostly surface level or specific to the media I consume.
My interest in this fashion style came a lot from the book series, All Creatures Great and Small. One of the prevelant themes in the first few books is the transition from traditional farming to automation / better medical practices. The farmers constantly struggle with understanding new testing methodology, seeing tractors and factory milking become competitors, etc. While the books are largely vignettes, you feel this presence in the background. But, it is still largely background.
So, yes. Anyone who has media they'd like to recommend that center moreso the cultural changes around the impact of the aristocracy are welcome to chime in!

i don't think "war crimes are fictional my annoyance is real" is the point when it comes to thingol hate. it's fairly rare that i see stances on thingol that are "i dislike/hate him because he acts like a jerk at times and that reminds me of unpleasant irritating individuals i know irl." and when i do see that, it's like, fair enough, he can be an asshole when he wants to be. his method of telling beren to fuck off was extreme and it was petty; he could have just said "absolutely not, get out." and he absolutely is a smothering overprotective father sometimes, who very much chose to lock his daughter up. no matter if he believed he was doing it for her safety, imprisoning her is an inexcusable violation of her autonomy.
but here's the thing: i don't see that many people who hate on thingol doing so for "the war crimes are fictional, my annoyance is real" reasons. if they did that they would call him out for things he actually does in canon, for being an unpleasant dick at times and a helicopter parent -- while still knowing that from an objective moral standpoint, those things do not make him as vile as mass murderers, attempted rapists, evil overlords, and all the other types of villains you can find in the silm. but that's not what i see from most thingol hate. what i see from most thingol hate is, on the contrary, based in things that canon makes no indication of, and said things are used to make him look like a worse person, morally speaking, than he is canonically. "he's racist against the noldor," "he turned refugees away," "he was a xenophobic isolationist through and through who never let anyone into doriath," "aredhel's situation with eol is his fault," "he would have disowned luthien if she had just eloped with beren without coming to him first," "he would have let celegorm marry luthien against her will," "he owed the union of maedhros his allegiance and unreasonably abandoned the noldor by not sending forces to help," "the feanorians made every effort to be diplomatic and humble to him but he's a bigot so he snubbed them at every turn which led to them resorting to violence," etc. etc. etc. -- all in all blaming him for every last thing that ever went sour in the first age. making up lies about how a character did x and y bad action as a reason for why you dislike them isn't "the war crimes are fictional, my annoyance is real," it's "i already hate this character and i want to justify my hate." i understand disliking characters because their unpleasant behavior is more mundane, so to speak, and therefore hits closer to home -- i do it too -- but from what i've seen? that is not fandom's attitude towards thingol. fandom's attitude towards thingol is accusing him of things that he literally never does to make him far more villainous that he is in the source material
#naturally not everybody does this and i have seen some people who just are annoyed with thingol bc he's like That in canon#but in general... if you really want to pull the 'fictional war crimes vs. real annoyance' card then discussing the things he actually does#wrong in the text; not the things he allegedly does according to tumblr metas; would be a good start#whew! anyway#elu thingol#elwe singollo#thingol#tolkien tag#tolkien#the silmarillion#the silm#silm#silmarillion#jrr tolkien

Ian Gallagher Being His Own Person, and Why That's Controversial
A meta about Ian's story during his time away from Mickey, and the hate his character receives for it. Inspired by @dazzle02 :)
How many times have you heard somebody say that they skipped season 8 of Shameless because Mickey wasn't in it? How many times have you heard somebody say that season 7 is only good during Mickey's episodes, or that the story is boring without Mickey in it, or that Ian's S6-8 arc was boring without Mickey? How many times have you heard somebody proclaim that Ian wasn't a good partner to Mickey?
Mickey is undeniably THE fan favorite character of the show, and with that comes a tendency for fans to defend him tooth and nail, even when he is in the wrong, and refuse to see any other points of view. Characters who go against Mickey in any way receive a harsh amount of criticism that sometimes is not fully justified. This applies even to Mickey's main connection to the story: Ian.
During season 5 and onward, some fans hold Ian's actions against him very harshly when I feel he deserves a bit more empathy. Of these, there are three main things people criticize his character for during seasons 5, 6, and 7 that I feel are not given proper analysis and thought by fandom.
Disclaimer before we get in because people feel very passionately about these two: Every interpretation of a character is entirely unique to each individual viewer, and these are just my opinions. This is in no way an anti-Mickey post, so as you read, keep in mind that any criticism toward him is not meant to make him out to be a bad character. Don't bite me.
Season Five: The Breakup of All Time
I think a large part of why people get so upset with Ian for the breakup is because of the growth Mickey experienced in seasons 4-5 leading up to it.
Mickey in seasons 1-3 is in extreme denial of being gay, and when he grows feelings for Ian, he lashes out and treats Ian like shit. Seeing Mickey's slow growth starting in season 3 brought interest to his character, and in season 4 with his major growth during his coming out, he becomes very compelling to a viewer. After all the angst that it took to get Mickey to finally open up, there's a natural desire to see that positive growth and relationship development continue. When Ian throws a wrench in that by breaking up with Mickey in season 5, people get upset, and they're going to direct that toward Ian because he is the easiest to blame.
There's the sentiment of, "Mickey came out for Ian, took care of Ian, and supported Ian when he needed him most despite his faults. Why is Ian leaving Mickey in the dust when he now needs him most?"
This is honestly not an unreasonable thing to feel when looking at things from Mickey's perspective.
But, when you take a look at Ian's character, and you really think of his motivations in that moment, his decision to break up is actually very understandable. Ian didn't break up with Mickey because he thinks Mickey is a bad partner or because he doesn't love Mickey enough. He broke up with Mickey because he thought that's what was best FOR Mickey.
I think comparing the breakup to their fight over marriage in season 10 to be an effective way to understand Ian better.
In season 10:
"How do you know you love me? Huh? How do you really know? I'm bipolar, right? I don't know who I am from one day to the next, and I can't guarantee shit. So why do you wanna spend the rest of your life with me?"
- Ian to Mickey, S10E9
Compare this to this conversation during the breakup:
"You used to love me. Now you don't even know who I am. Shit, I don't know who I am half the time... You don't owe me anything."
"I love you."
"The Hell does that even mean?"
- Ian and Mickey, S5E12
I feel that Ian's mindset is pretty similar in these two moments. In season 5, he is still grappling with his diagnosis, and he has no frame of reference of how a healthy life with bipolar can look. Everybody has been comparing him to Monica, and he himself seems to oscillate between thinking he is like her and not like her, so in his mind, he has nothing to offer anymore.
Then, in season 10, in his mind he proved himself right. He tried to get his shit in order, lived happily and found peace with his diagnosis, and then he fucked it up. He had an episode, and he lost everything he fought so hard to have. He has practically ruined his life because he DID what he FEARED he would:
"I hate the meds. You gonna make me take 'em?"
"You get fucking nuts when you don't."
"Are you gonna want to be with me even if I don't?"
- Ian and Mickey, S5E12
That conversation isn't Ian saying he isn't going to take his meds, given how in season six, he IS taking his meds. I interpret his above statement to be a warning to Mickey. Because Monica has tried to get on her meds before, has tried to get better, and has failed many times. IAN has gone off his meds willingly twice now. This is him telling Mickey, straightforward, "I do not like the meds, and there will always be a risk of me deciding not to take them."
And in seasons 8-9, he does exactly that. He goes off his meds, and he destroys everything he built for himself. That's part of the reason why he hesitates to marry Mickey in season 10, and part of the reason he breaks up with Mickey in season 5.
Ian views himself and his disorder to be a burden on the people he loves. He believes that Mickey will be better off without him.
"I don't want you sitting around, worrying, watching me, waiting for me to do my next crazy shit."
- Ian to Mickey, S5E12
Because Mickey HAS been doing that. Ever since he was diagnosed, Mickey has been watching Ian like a hawk, acting like a nurse, which frustrates Ian.
"Fuckin' nurse now?"
[...]
"I'm sick of your whiny, pussy crap. I don't need a fucking caretaker, alright? I need the shit-talking, bitch-slapping piece of Southside trash I fell for. Where is he? The fuck is he, Mickey?"
- Ian to Mickey, S5E10
But, of course, Mickey doesn't see it that way. To Mickey, Ian is anything but a burden he wants to unload.
"It means we take care of each other. [...] It means thick and thin, good times, bad, sickness, health, all that shit."
- Mickey to Ian, S5E12.
Mickey would do anything for Ian. He confronted his worst fear by coming out, stayed with Ian even after the infidelity, defended Ian after he kidnapped his son, and tried his best to understand a mental illness he had no prior knowledge about. Yet, Ian still won't commit to him. After everything, he still isn't good enough.
"I'm not saying never!"
"No, you're just saying you don't love me enough now."
- Ian and Mickey, S10E9
And Ian, meanwhile, thinks that HE isn't good enough for MICKEY. He has been diagnosed with a lifelong condition, one that he has seen ruin lives firsthand, something that will be a part of him for the rest of his life, and he doesn't wanna tie Mickey down to that life.
It's all one massive miscommunication.
Finally, I think the part that is the most confusing to fans regarding Ian's mindset during the breakup stems from his moments with Monica in S5E11 and S5E12.
Specifically, the parallels between these two conversations.
"Ian, there's always gonna be people that are gonna try and fix us. And you can never make those people happy. Like it breaks their heart just to look at you."
"Yeah, um, even Mickey now."
"He's your boyfriend, right? [...] I'm sure he means well, but you need to be with people who accept you for who you are. And they're out there. You should never apologize for being you."
- Monica and Ian, S5E11.
Vs.
"What the hell is wrong with you?"
"Too much! Too much is wrong with me. That's the problem, isn't it? Too much is wrong with me, and you can't do anything about that. You can't change it. You can't fix me, 'cause I'm not broken. I don't need to be fixed, okay? I'm me!"
- Ian and Mickey, S5E12.
Monica's interpretation of the relationship seems to paint Mickey in a negative light. "He means well, but he doesn't get it," or something along those lines. Based on her previous experiences with the diagnosis, she has come to the conclusion that people like Mickey or Fiona, who try to get them to take medication and are saddened by the diagnosis, are being controlling, and do not love them for who they really are. That's why she always went back to Frank; he actively tried to get her to NOT take her meds or get better, and did not encourage her when she DID try to get better. So, to her, being off her meds IS the TRUE version of herself, and the people who can not accept that do not accept her.
But I think, while Ian's lines parallel Monica's, that he does not think the same way that she does.
Toward the end of season 5, Ian seems to do a complete 180 from his previous statements on his similarities with Monica.
"You flushed your pills? You get thats a full-on Monica move, right?"
"I'm not Monica."
- Ian and Fiona, S5E8
Vs.
" [...] Cause they all say how alike we are."
"That's probably not a compliment."
"Uh... No, I think it is."
- Ian and Monica, S5E11
This happens in the wake of his arrest, after Ian's siblings talk about him to the military police. Many of their comments seem to hit Ian in a way that makes him feel misunderstood or like a burden.
Debbie: But he's been acting crazier for longer than that.
Lip: Yeah, at least this past year.
Officer: How would you characterize his behavior?
Debbie: Compared to how he used to be... He's different.
Lip: He'll go back and forth from, you know, being depressed, to, you know, incredibly wound up. I mean, he ran off with a baby for no reason.
Debbie: He almost hit me in the head with a baseball bat.
Fiona: Our mother was bipolar, so we know what it looks like. She put us through Hell, and- I'm not saying you put us through Hell, but when they're manic they can be destructive.
Officer: In your opinion, does he require medication?
Fiona: Yes.
Officer: Is he unable to care for himself?
Fiona: Sometimes, yes.
So, when Ian talks to Monica when they reconnect, Ian expresses loneliness and a feeling of isolation.
"I'm really glad you came, yknow? I just... I needed someone to talk to who... gets it."
- Ian to Monica, S5E11
When Monica tells Ian to not be ashamed and that she loves him for him, she is kind of acting like his Frank. The meds have been taking a toll, and recovery is so difficult that running with her and getting validation from the only other person who could "get it" is an easy choice to make. I think the combined factors of Mickey treating him so delicately, his siblings laying out his flaws so plainly, and his mother's open acceptance creates a feeling of bitterness or shame, and Ian is hoping to find comfort in his mother.
But it doesn't go the way he expects it to.
At the diner, he thinks that Monica is going to prostitute herself for money, and is relieved when she doesn't. It's likely he was thinking of his own stint at the Fairytale in this moment.
Then, he recalls a moment from his childhood that he does not look upon fondly, only for Monica to refer to it as "good times."
He meets Monica's partner and discovers he is an aggressive teenage meth dealer that she is helping to sell the meth.
I think Ian has a true moment of clarity during this. He had thought that he was vindicated, that everybody else was wrong, that they didn't understand, that Monica was right, and that he was perfectly fine just the way he was. But then he sees what Monica considers to be "a happy life."
"Ian, I'm finally happy. People like us, we can be happy. I love him, and that's the most important thing, to find somebody to love, right? Who loves you back for who you are. I want that for you. I love you. We're gonna be okay. We're gonna be okay."
- Monica to Ian, S5E12.
Monica's perception of life is warped. What she considers a good life is living in a trailer selling meth. Good memories are traumatic memories for those around her. True love and support is an aggressive teenage dealer, or Frank Gallagher.
A simple drive to Ian was a horrifying kidnapping to Svetlana. Doing a porn that was no big deal to Ian was a betrayal of trust to Mickey. Joining Monica and ignoring the calls of his well-meaning but ignorant family to Ian was a painful and worrisome disappearance to them. Ian's perception HAS been warped, and he's crashing back to reality, realizing that he has run off with MONICA, realizing that he can't continue down the same path as her, and needs to go home.
He's come to accept that he is bipolar. He's internalized what his family has kept repeating, that he is just like Monica, and looking at her living like this, believing that she is living well, is terrifying to him.
So he goes home, believing that he is just like his mother, and he's doomed to be a piece of shit. He goes back, and he breaks up with Mickey. Because he doesn't think that people like him can be happy, and he doesn't think he'll be okay. And that isn't something that Mickey can change. Too much is wrong with him, and Mickey can't do anything about it.
Really, it's just a matter of Ian operating under the "if you love them, let them go" mindset, and Mickey interpreting it as a rejection. It's the two of them both believing they are not good enough for the other and internalizing it instead of properly communicating.
TL;DR: Ian's breakup with Mickey in S5E12 is not done in a healthy OR selfish mindset. To him, he will do nothing but drag Mickey down, and in his unmedicated and clearly altered state of mind, he thinks the best thing is to let him go.
Season Six: Dating Caleb and Other Blasphemy
The first time we see Mickey in season six, it's behind a pane of glass in an orange jumpsuit.
Mickey had tried to murder Sammi, Ian's half-sister, and had been sentenced to prison for 15 years. It's established that Ian has not been to visit Mickey much and is trying to move on past that time in his life. But, upon being bribed by Svetlana, Ian visits, and during this visit Mickey asks Ian a question:
"You gonna wait for me?" - Mickey to Ian, S6E1.
And when Ian shows hesitation:
"Fuckin' lie if you have to, man, eight years is a long time." - Mickey to Ian, S6E1.
So, Ian replies:
"Yeah. Yeah, Mick, I'll wait." - Ian to Mickey, S6E1.
Before even meeting Caleb, fans absolutely tear into Ian for his decision to not commit to Mickey in this moment. They call it selfish, or out of character, or unfair to ice Mickey out when he is going through this difficult time.
But, let's look at it from Ian's position.
Ian has dealt with abandonment issues his entire life, with both Monica and Frank being unstable and infrequent providers during his adolescence. Throughout his relationship with Mickey, they had been separated on three separate occasions, one of which was entirely voluntary on Mickey's part. Now, due to committing a major crime, Mickey has been sent away for up to fifteen years. They would both be in their thirties by the time Mickey would be released, or close to it if he got out early, and that's not even considering that he was actively taking part in jobs / activities that could extend his sentence, like stabbing people.
Ian has dealt with recurring disappointment and abandonment his entire life, and throughout their time together, Mickey hasn't really established himself as stable.
Now, before you bring out the pitchforks;
"But Mickey was there for Ian and supported him through seasons 4-5. He grew as a person and proved he IS reliable."
Yes, that's true. He did undergo massive development that allowed him to be a better partner and more reliable person to Ian. But, canonically that period of time only takes place over a few months.
Mickey, for the better part of 2-3 years, was NOT a good partner to Ian. Multiple years of an unsteady situationship is not so easily forgotten. Yes, Mickey 1000% had valid reasons for acting the way he did. It's made very clear in S3E6 and S4E11 why Mickey hides his sexuality and lashes out when forced to confront it. But that isn't an excuse. His reasons for acting in a negative way towards Ian the first three seasons is understandable, but he went about it in a bad way.
Not to mention that, despite his growth, Mickey has just been sent to PRISON. No matter how you spin it, his decision to go after Sammi was NOT justified and does not necessarily bring forth confidence in his reliability and stability.
It's not unreasonable for Ian to not want to wait for over a decade for a man who has not always been the best for him. It sucks as a viewer who is invested in them, but Ian was not in the wrong.
Beyond (justifiably) selfish reasons, Ian also already thought that he was bad for Mickey, was worried that he would ruin his life, and with Mickey's justification for his torture attempt being that he did it FOR Ian, that Sammi had it coming because of what she did TO Ian, Ian probably felt responsible for that as well. There was probably a level of guilt in Ian from the whole situation, both for Mickey being in prison and for leaving him there.
But from his point of view, it's better for everybody to try and move on.
What really bothers me about this criticism toward Ian is the sense that he OWED Mickey his time and loyalty. Because Mickey had given and sacrificed so much for Ian during seasons 4-5, it's like people think Ian is then obligated to return that for Mickey, no matter what Mickey did. It's a very transactional way to view the situation, and it just leaves me with an icky taste in my mouth. Nobody owes anybody anything in that situation. Ian does not owe Mickey companionship, and Mickey did not owe Ian support when he got put in prison in season 9. Returning to Ian was Mickey's decision to make, and not a decision Ian was obligated to make in season 6.
Now, onto the actual "dating other people" part of the conversation.
For months, Ian has done nothing but get his meds on track while working at Patsy's, then at the janitors job on Lip's campus. During this time, Ian expresses having a very low sense of self-worth.
"He as smart as you?"
"No."
"Yeah, he's smart."
"Lip is the genuis of the family."
"So that gives you an excuse for not finishing [high school]? You seem plenty smart, and Dav's uniform doesn't really suit you."
- Ian, Lip, and Professor Youens, S6E3
And:
"This is it for me, Lip. This job. This is where I land."
- Ian to Lip, S6E3
Which Lip comments on in a very concise way:
"Yknow, he thinks... Being bipolar means he's doomed to be a piece of shit like our mother."
- Lip about Ian, S6E3
Ian feels no sense of purpose during these months. He feels he has no worth and that he is doomed to work a dead-end job and have no happiness. He thinks he is just like Monica.
That only changes when he witnesses an accident on the highway, and he saves a woman's life by pulling her out of a burning car.
This leads us to Caleb.
Now I'll admit, this is where I take issue with the storytelling, because this would've been a PERFECT way to segue into Ian's EMT arc, but regardless of what I personally think would've been better, the way it plays out in canon does actually still make sense for Ian's character.
After saving the woman from the burning car, Ian collapses due to smoke inhalation and exhaustion. A firefighter on the scene provides Ian with oxygen, thus saving his life. Ian immediately fixates on this particular firefighter.
Now, Ian has a very complicated relationship with feeling his emotions post his diagnosis. In season five, when he is numbed by his meds, the only way for him to feel again is through pain, via self-harm or starting physical fights, and sex. In fact, sex plays a major part in many aspects of Ian's life.
From the age of fifteen, Ian had been consistently subject to sexual abuse. He's been used for his body by countless men throughout his teenage years and has been oftentimes reduced merely to his sexuality and what he can provide to his partner. Even Mickey, in season 2, tells Ian as such in a panicked rage.
"You think we're boyfriend and girlfriend here? You're nothing but a warm mouth to me."
- Mickey to Ian, S2E8.
(No, I'm not saying Mickey sexually abused Ian. But he did contribute to the way we see Ian default so heavily to objectifying and sexualizing himself.)
So, due to this recurring trauma, Ian has a tendency to default to sex as the primary way of getting satisfaction, be it emotional or physical.
So, when Ian gets a rush of adrenaline from the crash, after months of that numbness, he chases the emotions in the most effective way he knows how.
Ian goes to the firehouse with cookies to give as thanks to the firefighter who saved him, but with a clear ulterior motive of getting laid. When he finds out that the particular firefighter (who happens to be part of the "gay shift" which is an odd writing choice) he saw on the highway is married, Ian meets Caleb. In this scene, they speak all of one line to each other when Caleb invites Ian to a firehouse softball game. The next time we see them on screen together, Ian acts very flirtatious toward Caleb, which sets forth their relationship.
"You ever pitch?"
"... Usually, but I'm open depending on what you're into. Where we doing this?"
"Follow me."
[...]
"Wait, we're actually playing softball?"
- Ian and Caleb, S6E5
I think Ian receives hate for this simply because he's expressing interest in a guy that isn't Mickey. Fans get the impression that Ian is moving on too fast or that his interest in Caleb is sudden or rushed. However, I think the rushed nature actually works to show Ian's intentions. In this moment, Ian is not really looking for a full-on relationship. Given how little they interacted thus far, the fact that Caleb wasn't even who Ian was originally interested in, and how Ian's comments consistently err on the side of sexual, its safe to say Ian was just looking for a hookup. In fact, it's Caleb who pushes so hard FOR the relationship.
Mickey, in a deleted scene, hooks up with an inmate right after talking with Ian. If Ian's relationship with Caleb had only been a fling or hookup, I don't think Ian would've been as heavily criticized. As it is, fans get upset at this relationship because it IS a relationship. They go on dates, Ian starts staying with Caleb, and really they seem to be very domestic.
But I don't think Ian was as dedicated to the relationship with Caleb as fans make him out to be.
From the jump, Ian seems uncomfortable with the quick-moving pace of it. At first he only seems interested in sex with Caleb, but upon the negative reaction that provokes, Ian conceded to going on a date with Caleb (which is a bit of a slap in the face to Mickey fans after Gallavich's ruined date.)
"[...] I was hoping to get my hands on your hose."
"Is that what this is to you? A fuck?"
"You say it like it's a bad thing. Come on, let's get out of here."
"No. I knew you were younger than me, but I thought you were a grown-up."
"Fuck. Okay. Okay. Hey, I'm into you, alright? I thought you were into me."
"I am."
"Then what's the problem?"
"I don't stick my dick in just any guy."
"What do you want, then?"
"Seriously? Do I have to spell it out for you?"
"Yeah."
"A date."
"With, like, flowers and chocolate and shit?"
"No, we could skip the flowers."
"Okay. You're on."
- Ian and Caleb, S6E5
(Side note, pulling a "is that all this is to you" after two non-romantic interactions is not just quick in terms of hookup culture, which Ian is more attuned to, but is quick in any terms. More on that later.)
During this date, Ian is visibly very uncomfortable. Some would chalk this up to him having never been on a date before, and the writing even seems to imply that,
"Okay, look, I have no idea what I'm doing. My last boyfriend wasn't much of a talker, his idea of a conversation was to insult me a bunch and then punch me right before we banged."
- Ian to Caleb, S6E6
but that's actually not true, DESPITE the writers forgetting that.
"You know, Mickey and I never went out on dates. Ned never took me out, Kash and I fucked in the back of a convenience store, and I don't think jerking off strangers in a nightclub counts, so..."
- Ian to Lip, S6E6.
He actually HAD gone out on a "date" with Ned in season three, where he was visibly less uncomfortable than on his date with Caleb. He also went to many loft parties during his time dancing at the club, wherein he blended in very well and was able to sorta chameleon himself with the northside crowd. I think the show wants us to believe his discomfort is from him "never having been on a date before" or being unfamiliar with a "slower" pace, but I think his discomfort actually would stem from him just genuinely not being interested in Caleb in a romantic way, and thus feeling awkward on a date that's in a more romantic setting (compared to his one with Ned, which was undoubtedly more sexual.)
I also think his discomfort stems from being completely out of his element. Ian has taken a massive hit to his confidence since his diagnosis, so his Southside roots bring about a bit more hesitancy in him than it might have before, and he may be less confident in his ability to chameleon. That's why, during the date, Ian shows discomfort with Caleb when he shows more "class" than Ian.
"Usually, I get a bunch of apps to share. You good with that?"
"[Uncertain hum] ... Appetizers! Sure, yeah, big- big fan of apps."
[...]
"You seem like a very pensive kinda guy. You an only child?"
"Uh, no."
"Brothers and sisters?"
"A bunch, yeah."
"Older or younger?"
"Both."
"What about your parents? Both still alive?"
"... Yeah."
"... Fantastic. I'm learning so much."
[...]
"Where I'm from, people communicate with their fists."
"Where's that?"
"Southside."
"Mmm. Hands of steel. Okay, so you're a street rat. A brawler."
"Is that a problem?"
"Only if you make it one."
- Ian and Caleb, S6E6.
Then, beyond their first date, we have the actual relationship to dive into.
Throughout his scenes with Caleb, Ian seems to oscillate between neutrality, discomfort, or mild enjoyment in the situations he finds himself in.
There's this interaction, for example, where Ian lets Caleb take charge in defining their relationship:
"So what are we doing?"
"Whatever you want, I guess."
- Ian and Caleb, S6E7.
Or this moment:
"What are you smiling at?"
"I like having you over here. What are you smiling at?"
"I like having a purpose."
- Ian and Caleb, S6E8.
Or when Caleb invites Ian out with his friends, and we see Ian slip into his chameleon persona, mirroring the petty mannerisms of the most vocal participant of the conversation, as well as avoiding diving too much into his personal history.
"You haven't told me which one is your ex."
"Guess."
"Old guy, pink sweater."
"How'd you know?"
"Ooh, a redhead, Caleb? Does his carpet match his drapes?"
"You're a good sport."
- Ian and Caleb, S6E8.
[...]
"If we had known you were bringing a middle school student, Caleb, we wouldn't have come to a place that cards."
"Oh, no, it's cool, I don't drink. I hear it makes your skin old and leathery."
"That's-that's how we're playing this?"
"Hey, you threw down first."
"Where you from, kid?"
"Back of the Yards."
"Local boy. What's your story?"
"Story?"
"Who you are, what you do, how did you meet this chocolate bundt cake?"
"Met him at the firehouse."
- Ian and Gregory, S6E8
[...]
"We like this one, Caleb. Don't we, Gregory?"
"I mean, If young, beautiful, and kind of a smartass is something to like, sure, fine, I guess we do."
- Caleb's friends about Ian, S6E8.
OR, in a deleted scene where Caleb expresses frustration at Ian keeping the distance between him and Ian's family, as well as Ian's lack of communication, while Ian seems unbothered or even perplexed by Caleb's frustration.
"So, where'd you sleep last night?"
"Home. Got done at three, told you I'd be late."
"Yeah, like nighttime late, not next day late."
"Well, I didn't wanna wake you, and I had to go back there to grab some stuff: clothes, towels..."
"Where's there?"
"Home, you mean?"
"Yeah."
"Back of the Yards."
"Right. You did mention that once. I still don't know where it is or who I'd call if there was an emergency?"
"Uh... my brother, I guess? Or my sister."
"Brother or sister. Okay. I'll just track down Ian Gallagher's brother or sister on the internet."
"I'll... put their numbers in your phone."
"Great."
- Ian and Caleb, S6E11 deleted scene.
OR any of the follwing:
When they go to get Ian tested for STDs, he is visibly uncomfortable having Caleb in the room with him.
He is only comfortable revealing his bipolar disorder if it is done in exchange for another secret from Caleb.
He isn't very comfortable sharing his past, only references his previous relationship in a lighthearted manner, and he only reveals his sexual history upon feeling pressured to do so, which he purposefully presents in a callous way.
To me, the entirety of Ian and Caleb's relationship reads as Ian's desperation for validation through sex, which leads to him putting up with a relationship he isn't entirely comfortable in or commited to or ready for. To me, it seems like he's truly just looking for companionship in any way he can get it.
Out of everything, though, I think what really gets to fans most about this storyline is the constant comparison of Caleb to Mickey as a means of demonizing Mickey.
Throughout the entirety of Ian and Caleb's relationship, there is a constant comparison between the two relationships, seemingly with the intent of painting Mickey as a horrible partner.
When Ian tells Lip about his upcoming date with Caleb, he remarks that he never went on dates with Mickey, which comes off as an unnecessary jab.
During his date with Caleb, Ian talks about his lack of effective communication skills, which reflects negatively on Mickey, to the point Caleb brings forward the idea of domestic abuse.
During the wedding that Ian attends with Caleb, Ian mentions Mickey's marriage to Svetlana, and he uses a tone that comes off as belittling the situation and how difficult it was for Mickey.
There's this line, when Caleb asks Ian to kiss for the first time:
"Can I kiss you?"
"I thought kissing comes after you've had sex a bunch of times."
"Ian, kissing comes whenever you want it to. Even now."
- Ian and Caleb, S6E6.
Then, there's Mandy stating that Caleb was better than Mickey.
"A hot black fireman. Also an artist."
"Upgrade from my brother."
"I miss Mickey, but uh... This new guy's nice."
- Ian and Mandy, S6E9
These near constant comparisons to Mickey are frustrating to fans, because it can often feel like Ian, or even just the writers and the narrative, are trying to belittle Mickey's character and reduce him to a one-note toxic ex, which completely spits in the face of the development that he went through. THAT is what is most frustrating to fans.
Because it's true that Mickey was not always the best partner. In real life, Mickey would be a walking red flag, and Gallavich would be undeniably toxic. But that applies to EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER in Shameless. That is the entire point of the show. None of them are particularly good people. They all do shitty things, but they all have compelling reasons for doing it. That's why we can look at these characters and feel connected to them instead of just absolutely hating them.
It's a really odd writing choice for a show that focuses on morally gray characters, or the idea that nobody in the show is really a good person, to decide to play moral high ground in this particular instance, and have Ian suddenly turn his nose up at Mickey's behaviors.
But is this really how Ian feels?
Because, as established, Ian is VERY good at playing chameleon. He is good at shaping himself into whatever a partner wants him to be. He mirrors his partners mannerisms, beliefs, and attitudes.
And Caleb, for all that the story wants to make us believe he's better than Mickey, is actually not the best partner either. Not just for cheating on Ian in season seven and then gaslighting Ian about it; he shows some toxic behaviors in season six as well, including being lowkey judgmental about Ian's Southside roots.
Take, for example, Caleb implying that the Southside is trash, but that he can see the beauty in Ian despite being from the Southside:
"That's my latest. I love to find the treasure inside the trash. Trying to find the secret life in things. What it wants to be instead of what it is."
"Is that what you're doing with me?"
"Good question. Can I kiss you?"
- Ian and Caleb, S6E6
(Which, funnily enough, this line from Caleb goes pretty against the sentiment that Monica had in season five, of Ian finding somebody who loves Ian for who he already is, as Mickey did.)
Or, for another example, Caleb judging Ian pretty heavily during the softball game for being "not grown-up." Simply because Ian expresses sexual interest in him above romantic.
"Cmon, let's get out of here."
"No. I knew you were younger than me, but I thought you were a grown-up."
- Ian and Caleb, S6E5.
Which, as I pointed out before, is really strange behavior. Participating in hookup culture isn't something that Ian needs to be shamed over. There's a sentiment of "Hooking up is beneath me, it's immature," to Caleb's tone, which is unfair. Now, he has reasons for this, that being his experience with getting HIV from a hookup who lied to him, which draws a pretty interesting parallel to Ian.
"Don't worry, guy I did the scene with said he was clean."
"He didn't use a rubber? Are you out of your fucking mind?"
- Ian and Mickey, S5E5.
Vs.
"Guy in college. He lied to me."
- Caleb to Ian, S6E8.
(Which I actually find to be a very interesting plot point and is actually a pretty good scene.)
So, while Caleb was not wrong to put forth a boundary by not hooking up, he was wrong for acting as if IAN was the problem in the situation. Not to mention, his behavior at the game is very strange when taken into account how little they've interacted thus far. He had understandable reasons for his negative reaction, but he went about it the wrong way. Sounds familiar, doesn't it?
Anyways, I could talk about the relationship between Ian and Caleb more, but that's not what the point of this is.
The point I'm trying to make is that Caleb, however covertly, expresses a negative or biased view toward the Southside lifestyle. And Ian, being the type to mimic his partners, follows along in that.
Ian already fears that he is going to be left. He is afraid that showing Caleb who he really is and not being the idealized version of himself will lead to Caleb breaking up with him.
"I'm enjoying it while it lasts."
"You think he'll dump you?"
"Well, I've told him I'm bipolar, and my family's screwed up, and he took it pretty well. But it's one thing to hear it and another to live it, so... We shall see."
- Ian and Mandy, S6E9
So, he chameleons. He makes himself the treasure in the trash. He distances himself from the image of a brooding, Southside street rat.
Because, after so long of constant pain and numbness during and post his diagnosis, Caleb is the first good thing he's found.
"I haven't been this happy in a long time."
- Ian to Caleb, S6E8.
And really, everything that I just talked about doesn't matter when you think about it that way.
No matter how dedicated or invested Ian was in his relationship with Caleb, it still provided him with companionship and validation, which as we know, is something that Ian has an unhealthy dependence on to find self-worth.
And I don't think Ian was wrong in searching for that connection simply because that connection wasn't with Mickey. He could've been well and truly in love with Caleb, and he wouldn't deserve some of the hate he receives for his canon actions.
It's easy to look at Ian's relationship with Caleb and get frustrated because of all the time that was put into Ian and Mickey's relationship. But beyond the instinctual negative feeling that comes with seeing Ian with anybody other than Mickey, his relationships outside of Mickey deserve to be analyzed and observed for what they actually do for HIS character, and not just immediately cast aside as unnecessary or ooc.
So, to summarize:
Firstly, Ian wasn't selfish for not waiting 15 years for somebody in prison. Whether he was serious about Caleb or not, Ian was under no obligation to dedicate himself to Mickey. Ian did not owe Mickey anything simply because Mickey was there for Ian when shit got tough. If they had been together, sure, Ian would've been a lot shittier for leaving Mickey alone. But as it was, they were broken up, and even if they hadn't been, Ian would've had every right to not want to continue seeing Mickey after his decision to harm Sammi, just as Lip was justified in not wanting to be with Mandy anymore after she ran over Karen.
Secondly, Ian dating Caleb wasn't bad for his character. In fact, I think their relationship in season six was actually a very interesting way to progress Ian's character and get more insight into his mind and how he operates.
Thirdly, Ian and Caleb's relationship deserves to be analyzed for what it is, rather than what it isn't. Just because Ian is not with Mickey doesn't mean that he doesn't undergo some huge development in this season, both in and outside his relationship with Caleb. Furthermore, Ian entering a new relationship gives us the opportunity to see more sides of his character, and as such the relationship should be analyzed as it's own separate entity, and not just as a hurdle in the way of Gallavich.
Fourth, Ian was not just waiting to cast Mickey aside to jump on the next dick possible. I've seen this criticism before, and when looking at his actual arc at the beginning of S6 and analyzing his general character, that's just simply not true. Entering a new relationship is not equal to immediately disregarding Mickey.
TL;DR: The hate Ian gets from this season mainly stems from "Ian date somebody aside from Mickey, bad Ian" without any further thought behind why he enters the relationship and what the relationship actually means to him. There is no separation in the minds of fans between Ian and Mickey, and therefore, Ian having experiences and an identity outside of Mickey is negatively perceived.
Season Seven: Putting His Own Wellbeing First
This one will be less long winded than the previous one, because I have less to say on it, honestly.
During the entirety of Ian's bipolar arc, it is pretty clearly shown that to maintain mental wellness, Ian needs stability.
When Mickey shows up and asks Ian to run away with him to Mexico, that's threatening to uproot every amount of stability Ian has managed to secure the past two seasons of the show.
I honestly don't see as much hate directed toward Ian for his decision to leave Mickey at the border as I see for his previous decisions. I'd say the main thing I actually see directed toward this season is just that Ian's story is boring without Mickey in it. Mostly because he enters another new relationship with Trevor after his relationship with Caleb, which really just follows the cyclical Shameless cycle of, "Don't know what to do with a character? Give them a new love interest!" But because I talked about the judgement for non-Gallavich Ian relationships above, I don't particularly feel like doing a deep dive into the Ian and Trevor relationship in this meta.
What I want to talk about relates to the Mickey Mexico storyline, though, and that's the hate other characters recieve for trying to dissuade Ian from going.
After finding out that Mickey escaped from prison, Fiona and Ian have the following conversation:
"What are you doing up?"
"Couldn't sleep. You ever, uh, think about about what would've happened if you'd run off with Jimmy-Steve?"
"Lying sociopath Jimmy-Steve? My life would be a nonstop psycho-thriller. I definitely dodged a bullet with that one."
"What if nothing ever gives you that same thrill again? Still feel like you dodged a bullet?"
"I don't know. Probably. Where's this coming from?"
"Things have been weird between me and Trevor since Mickey got out."
"You mean since Mickey busted out of prison and has got half the Chicago Police Department circling the Southside looking for him."
"Can't get him out of my head. Just trying to stop myself from doing something I shouldn't."
"You turned your life around. Mickey would set a match to it. You've done really great without him, and I'm really fucking proud of you."
- Ian and Fiona, S7E10.
I've seen this conversation criticized many times because of how "unfairly" Mickey is treated in this scene. But I truly think that nothing said in this scene was wrong, and Fiona was 100% right.
In the past, Fiona has definitely shown a prejudice against the Milkovich family before. Specifically with Mandy, Fiona seems to look down upon her and disapproves of the relationship between her and Lip. This on its own is unfair treatment and is annoying to witness.
But in this particular case, absolutely nothing she is saying is wrong or biased simply because Mickey is a Milkovich.
People take the line, "Mickey would set a match to it," and compare it to his behavior in late Season 4 through season 5, where Mickey is taking care of Ian, and say that Fiona is being untruthful or hypocritical. If Mickey had never been sent to prison, or even if he had just been released legally, and Ian was simply thinking about cheating on Trevor and getting back with Mickey instead of running away with him, then the criticism toward Fiona would be more justified. But as it is, Mickey is a wanted fugitive, and Ian running away with him would make Ian a fugitive as well, and WOULD effectively set a match to the life Ian had spent the past two seasons working toward. He would be giving up a career he worked hard for and fought to have, he'd be living in stressful conditions on the run, he'd have no support system, and he would have less ease of access to his medication. Running with Mickey would have been the wrong decision for Ian's wellbeing, and honestly, Mickey should never have asked Ian to go with him.
I think that many people have rose colored glasses on when it comes to Gallavich, specifically with Mickey, and that makes it harder to view these moments unbiased. But, looking at it objectively, Mickey was so wrong for asking Ian to come with him to Mexico. He KNOWS that Ian needs stability with his bipolar diagnosis, and he KNOWS that this would be a stressful life he'd be forcing Ian into.
Simply put, he's acting selfishly in that moment. Having your own interests in mind is not always a bad thing, but in this specific case, Mickey would have thrown a huge wrench into Ian's life is Ian hadn't made decisions in HIS best interest.
Again, I have less to say on this as I did other subjects, because to me it feels much more cut and dry. Mickey was in the wrong here 100%, Fiona was not being wrongfully judgmental toward Mickey, and Ian was not in the wrong for not going with Mickey.
After so long of seeing them apart, it makes sense to want to see them together again. So when Ian, again, is the one making the decision to end their relationship, fans are going to lash out at him and those around him.
But it's important to put aside biases and allow your favorite character to be in the wrong occasionally. Mickey is not perfect, and criticism against him, both from characters in the show and fans, is not unfounded nor unjustified.
TL;DR: Mickey was wrong for asking Ian to uproot his life and run to Mexico, and calling that out isn't defamation of his character.
To End This Yap Session:
Ian is by no means a faultless character, and he is not exempt from criticism both inside and outside of his relationship with Mickey. However, I often feel that the criticism he faces is for the wrong reasons, and not much contemplation or exploration is done on him as much as it is for Mickey.
I love Mickey. He's an amazingly complex character, and his relationship with Ian is one of my favorite parts of the show. But in being a complex character, he is also an imperfect character.
I feel that many fans get very protective over their favorite characters, to the point that anything that goes against that character's interests is labeled as bad, and any criticism toward his character is disregarded immediately.
In this particular case of Gallavich, I feel that post season three, fans often see things from Mickey's point of view without looking at Ian's as much. This meta was simply to give my own thoughts on Ian's most "controversial" moments among fans. Obviously this is mostly condensed to season six and his relationship with Caleb, which I feel is the biggest example of jumping to conclusions and only seeing the surface level of his character.
However, I would like to acknowledge that Ian is also an insanely popular character in the Shameless fandom. While he is misunderstood in many instances, he is given much more sympathy and understanding than many other characters in the show, especially many of the female characters. This long-winded meta is only focused on the concerning tendency for fans to link Ian's identity to Mickey entirely without allowing him to be an individual, but a majority of the time he is still a beloved character who is treated favorably by fans. Compared to a character like Debbie, Ian sees much more support, and I feel that the energy I put toward this meta and trying to understand Ian should also be applied to (almost) EVERY character in the show.
Anyways feel free to leave thoughts.
#shameless#shameless meta#ian gallagher#mickey milkovich#monica gallagher#shameless caleb#shameless trevor#gallavich#does any of this really matter? no probably not cause at the end of the day its a silly tv show#but i find it personally interesting to think about so i made a long ass meta about it#but its seriously not that deep so fandom discussion is great#but if the stans take my post to twitter and grill me like my dbh meta i will get gen mad lol#also sorry to the ppl who follow me for dbh ive def fallen off that hyperfixation at this point in time#this could've been cleaned up a bit but ive had this in my drafts for like 3 weeks or more so

I don’t have a link but I saw a post along the lines of “EPIC fans trying to gaslight themselves into thinking Odysseus wouldn’t cheat (he does in the books)” and I nearly had a conniption.
Some people WERE arguing he was assaulted, but other people were saying it depends on the interpretation and saying he has a child with Circe and that he stays on the island with her for a year. I also saw someone say he was just lying about being assaulted on another post about it.
The Odyssey/EPIC fandom is so exhausting I’ve thought about blocking everything sometimes ngl. It’s so hard to filter out posts like that. But there’s so much amazing art and content about it I don’t want to stop seeing it.
No, like that's the struggle of it.
I Love Epic and I technically got into the Odyssey BECAUSE of Epic. But I'm a hardcore Odyssey girly. I adore it so much. I've read 8 translations at this point because I love it so much and it's fun for me! And Epic is in no way a replacement for the Odyssey (Jay even says that it's not! he's simply inspired by the Odyssey) and it feels like high quality fanfiction of the Odyssey (FUN! JOYOUS WHIMSY! I still like it! :3 ).
But holy shit, like, both Epic AND Tagamemnon fans can be so fucking exhausting. (I am a fan of both. I can say this.)
(Obviously I'm not talking about everyone. <3 I've made many friends and have met lovely people in both fandoms.)
Like while yes, Epic!Odysseus isn't coerced/raped by either of the goddesses, that's simply because of the fact that Jay simply felt like he wasn't well equipped to handle such dark topics to that extent. And I honestly respect him for that! He knows his limits with the story he wanted to tell and that's good! And in general I think he did a fantastic job handling the aspects of it he did touch on (Coercion with Circe's threatening in "There Are Other Ways" is done well imo.)
(ngl, I kind of take back what I said about "Not Sorry for Loving You". I think a lot of my reaction was initially from my fear of how fandom would react. But I've been delightfully surprised seeing how (for the most part) Epic Fandom has really come through to show the "fucked up-ness" of that song)
THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT ODYSSEUS IN THE ODYSSEY IS A SHITTIER HUSBAND BECAUSE HE, IN THE ANCIENT TEXT, CANNOT SAY NO TO A GODDESS.
Greek Mythology isn't like Percy Jackson where 12 year old Percy beat Ares. (I was a PJO KID TOO!) It's not "Odysseus didn't try hard enough" fucking victim blaming btw because HE LITERALLY CANNOT REFUSE OR THEN HE'LL (AND HIS FRIENDS IN THE CASE OF CIRCE) WOULD DIE!!!
Like I wrote a whole ass essay on Circe's Situation (I feel so preachy and shitty about having to constantly bring it up but I will as much as I have to to get people to listennnn) and in general, if you can't see what's happening with Calypso, you've got your head up your ass and/or are just looking away because you don't like the actual implications of what's happening. For the main "gripe" I've seen with Calypso with how "He enjoyed her company at first", @lyculuscaelus has a great essay breaking that down.
And before? ODYSSEUS HAS NO LISTED CONCUBINES! And he brings up Penelope often in the Iliad!
And the whole "lying about being assaulted", I'm sorry but if someone is holding the "Men were so sexist that they couldn't possibly care about the women in their lives or have been victims" idea, then why would Odysseus willfully share that he was raped by women? Who, as they say, were viewed beneath him? Why would he lie about something that would put him in such a humiliating light?
Btw, Menelaus (sealy boy!!!) even says that he's being held captive by Calypso with what he learned from Proteus! Menelaus isn't known for telling stories!
I feel bad as like, I used to LOVE going into the tags and finding creators I haven't seen before and cheering them on! Art and Fics and yay! But like... It's sometimes so disheartening going in there and seeing nonsense or bad takes ;~;
Honestly, as much as I DO enjoy Epic, I think that hopefully once the hype dies down a lil, it'll chill out more :') We'll all be okay!
#aaaaaaaaaa#I've been meaning to write a#“Epic and Odyssey Odysseus both utterly adore Penelope. It's just that one is a modern musical and one is an ancient poem” essay thing#because like. I've also seen shit about how “I like Epic Better-” (fine. you do you.) “-because Odysseus actually loves Penelope in it”#WHAT?!#nuh uh. absolutely not >:(#odysseus#odyssey#epic the musical#odypen#anti madeline miller#anti circe#<-just in case#tagamemnon#greek mythology#Mad rambles#Mad rants#essay#kinda???#shot by odysseus#ask#anon#tele-GONE-y#I feel a bit bad. I hope I don't come off as like a “know-it-all” and/or like aggressive with these rants but I just get frustrated ;~;#tw rape mention

Taking it upon myself to actually research into the columbine case has taught me that I really see myself in Dylan. Alas, many people do, but something about him tells me his sadness is my sadness. Something so endearing about the way he felt and how he visualized what he felt that is so strange. It constantly feels like I am the only one who feels this specific type of sad and alone, though I understand it feels like that about many things.
Seeing myself in someone like Dylan Is quite scary, I'd say? I would never go through with things he did, but I can't say the case doesn't have an influence. In total time, I have probably spent more than 7 hours in the last couple days crying and wanting nothing more than to be gone; to have an escape. I don't agree with Dylan and Eric's actions. Of Course, I can find a way to understand but I can admire their suicidal tendencies. I can admire the confidence to have actually taken their own lives.
Of Course though, it was a mix of not wanting to deal with their consequences as well as finding it as the perfect moment, yeah? They had already ruined their lives, he felt as though as Life wasn't worth living. I just want to know if it was fulfilling to him? To Eric? I want to know whether or not it had happened all exactly as they wanted.
It's ashame nobody will know now.
I don't think I could have prepared myself for the recent emptiness I've felt, not so much of a want to have been in Dylan's presence but just so desperate to escape. Maybe it is insensitive but can you blame me for wishing it was me?
Me who they shot? I wouldn't have to do it myself, that's more than enough. And alas, we'd both be dead together after all. A feeling of peace. A chance to genuinely solely understand their thought process.
As someone who is still fairly tame about true crime yet have an insane boundary problem about every case I get infatuated with, I get worried my words will just be seen as surface level fangirling to any of the cases I cling to. And of course this is cringe as well, but I always feel like I have a special sort of understanding towards these people? Not like a, 'i can fix him' way but in a, if I were them, I would illute to the same things.
Obviously their actions are horrible (that goes without saying) but I kind of wish the average person took time to understand that everyone is troubled. I don't believe 'good' people exist in the world. Yes, you can do good acts and you can make good impact, but there are no good people. Perfection isn't possible and I truly feel that the only way to be a good person would be to be perfect.
Everyone is evil. Everyone has faults and hopefully it eats at everyone. I feel like everyone on this planet should feel a sense of hopelessness to an extent; you don't know what it's like to be dead. You don't know if your actions here have genuine consequences when you're dead and gone. You don't know anything, neither do I. Neither did Eric and Dylan, neither did anyone who did similar acts. Nobody here knows anything. Nobody knows anything about anything and I wish we as a whole could accept that.
It bleeds into religion for me. I have never had faith or anything despite being brought up Christian. It was one of those things that have always just been fantasy to me. The concept of the Bible is so warped, inconsistent, unrealistic. It doesn't seem justifiable under any circumstance to me, good for anyone who can see it in the light but I don't think I could ever think that. There is something so false about any concept of any god or afterlife.
It's frustrating though because I know I don't truly think that. I think there is some sort of after life, whether it's reincarnation or infinite nothingness for those who died. I just don't think my - or anyones - actions right now have any impact when it's all said and done.

Beyond Business-part three//t.c.
“Are you all ready for the Palm Springs Awards tonight?” you asked Timmy when you arrived at work, his house, the next day.
“Yeah, I guess.” he said. He looked tired, he rubbed his eyes with his hands, “I think I will take your speech with me. It will be a good script to ground myself with when I accept the award.”
“Alright. So I guess it’s good enough for you to use if you win the Golden Globe, and then we can work on a new variation for the Oscars.”
“Yes, yes, but I doubt I will need it. Those awards always favor older actors. Not that I can blame them, I am not as experienced.”
“Timmy you should be proud of your work. The awards are just a bonus for some people. It’s not a necessity to know you’ve done a great job.”
“I am proud.” he smiled then shrugged, “Maybe one day I will stop caring so much about the awards. You’re a great writer by the way. I think I’ll have you do all of my speeches with me from now on.” he grinned softly at you.
“Well, thank you. I’m glad to help, boss.” you set your purse down on the counter, "Emails today?"
You heard his phone buzz, he looked at it, then answered you, "Yeah, it'll be a short day for you today. I'll be leaving this afternoon for the ceremony."
"Okay, um, do you need me to do anything for tonight? I could come with you, if need be."
He shook his head, "No, no, I don't think that will be necessary."
You nodded as he answered a text on his phone, "Is she going?"
"Who?" he responded without looking up, totally aloof.
You sighed, "Timmy, I'm not a reporter, you don't have to play dumb with me. You know who I'm talking about."
"Yeah, I think she is going." he grumbled.
"So, should I expect a drunken phone call at two in the morning this time?" you quipped.
He looked up, stared at you, like he was trying to communicate something, even if he didn't know what it was. "I've got a phone call." he said plainly, avoiding answering, before turning away and going into the other room.
You rolled your eyes, mumbling to him, but really to yourself, "I guess I will take that as a yes. Your phone wasn't even ringing."
..........
The workday went smoothly, but the closer it got to your early dismissal, the more Timmy become agitated. He grew grumpier throughout the day, not necessarily at you, just in general. You began to wonder if he was getting enough sleep, or maybe it was just stress, or maybe it was Miss Jenner.
"Are you sure you're okay? For tonight, I mean?" you were concerned about him on a personal level, but couldn't let it show too much, so you sheathed it with the mention of the awards ceremony.
“Yeah,” he spoke softly, walking you out of his home, “I’ll be fine. Don’t worry about me.”
It seemed to be a new routine for him to escort you out at the end of the work day. It was growing on you. It made you feel cared for.
“Okay, well, good luck. You’ll do great. I’ll see you tomorrow.” For some reason, you felt the urge to kiss him on the cheek, like returning the favor from the day before. But you held back, yeah it’s a good idea to hold back.
"Thank you. See you tomorrow." he gave you that signature Timmy grin.
As you headed home, you could not get the image of his face out of your mind. You didn't care for the mustache and short hair combination at first, but the look had really grown on you recently. His hair had become looser and tousled on top, and he had grown a goatee to go with the mustache, which you think brought the facial hair look together nicely. It began to suit him in a mature way, and there was something really cute and sweet about it.
But, you knew that you could not think of him like that for too long. He was your boss, and he belonged to someone else.
That evening, you wondered if you would hear from Timmy after the awards were over. You hoped that you wouldn't, and that he would be okay. Maybe he wouldn't drink, or maybe he would just have a couple and then go home. Maybe he wouldn't need you.
However, your phone rang in the middle of the night, waking you up. You peeled your eyelids open with a groan, grabbing your phone and seeing the time, 1:47 A.M. Sure enough, it was your boss calling.
Your cleared your throat as best and as quickly as you could, hitting the green answer button, "Yes, Timmy?"
"Hey, open your door would ya?"
"What?" you sat up instinctually, rubbing the sleep from your eyes.
"Can you open your door?" he asked louder, with more emphasis on each word.
"Okay! Jeez, sorry. I'm coming." you threw your covers off, scooted your feet across the floor to find your slippers. "I was asleep you know." you sassed into the phone at him.
"Oh, shit. I guess it's early isn't it?" you could just picture him squinting at his phone, seeing what time it was.
"Try 'early,' goodbye." you said, ending the call and scampering out of your bedroom.
.........
You opened the front door of your apartment, and there he was, waiting.
"Timmy. What are you doing here?"
"Just stopping by." he shrugged nonchalantly.
"How did you know where I lived?"
"Your job application." he said in an obvious tone.
You blinked in disbelief, “I gave that to you more than a year ago."
"Yeah, well, I have my assistant's address memorized, okay? You never know when I might need you." he insisted.
You sighed, "I guess. Please tell me you didn't drive here." You leaned outside, peeking around to see if his car was there.
"No, I took an Uber from the event." he placed his hand on the door frame next to you.
“Are you okay? Why didn’t you go home with Kylie? Or just go to your place?” you asked.
He frowned, looking down at the ground, he shook his head at your interrogation. “I don’t know.” he looked up at you, standing straight up, he took a step forward.
The close proximity between you and him felt dangerous.
He was a bit taller than you, so he leaned down close, and softly, he said, “Why can’t I stay away from you?”
You felt weak, like you could fall right to the floor. But if you did, you didn’t know if Timmy was stable enough to help you back up.
Luckily, you didn’t have to respond in any way, because he said, “Do you have a couch or something I can crash on?”

Someone else broke my life.
They should have to fix it.
I have repaired the damage of my shitty childhood and my shitty economic system and built a life I wanted to live like 3 times already.
I'm not doing it again.
If someone wants me to not rot in bed until I find a way to kill myself that sticks and is permanent for once...
Idk if this is a real ancient Chinese thing or something they made up for a shitty movie, but if you save someone's life you are responsible for them.
I feel like I am not responsible for what happens to me. I am not in control of my life. I keep saving my life and "doing the work" and in return not receiving personal autonomy. I'm not saying personal autonomy like blah blah blah toxic hyper independence you suck I hate you blah.
I'm saying I should be able to do the work and live alone and not have sudden random drastic fluctuations in my income, I repaired my credit and saved a huge emergency fund and lost it and now I'm in debt worse that before. I should be able to make friends and romantic liasons and business relationships with people where they don't fuck me over on the way out and they just wish me the best of luck. I should be allowed to be easily able to afford the things that make it easier to live with my disability without having to justify them to anyone and I should be allowed to tell people to fuck off if they are mean to me, and I should be allowed to know that if something is wrong in a social setting that people put on their adult underwear and tell me in words what is wrong before retaliation against me, and that my disability won't be used against me, and that I can tell people details of my life when they ask for them without having to worry that later they will intentionally use them to humiliate me, and I should be allowed to live in a society where we normalize the idea that people who follow the rules but use them to fuck people over are to blame for their own actions and the people who are pretending to be so hamstrung by the rules that they can't help are actually just as bad and the people who tell you it's your responsibility to do better and share dubious advice with you are on thin fucking ice.
Literally I built myself a little tiny micro version of that in my own life.
And then someone came and violated me and took it. And they did it in such a way that they will never face consequences and I have to know that no matter what I do, they could do that to anyone.
Building anything is pointless.
Saving my life is pointless.
Living has no value if it's only your breath and your lungs.
I'm not saying I won't work, I worked on my business for years before I got a dime, I worked 6 to 7 days a week when I had it running well for the majority of the time. I'm saying I'm not going to run at some fucking football and pretend that I'll be able to kick it this time.
The only thing I am willing to put the bare minimum of effort into is paying my bills and trying to figure out how to die in one shot relatively easily alone in my home.
I don't want to take anyone with me or die in front of anyone. And I don't want to heal. I did that. It took years and years and every time I got close and once I did, people just came along and retraumatized me.
It didn't even take much time or effort on their part.
So what I am going to do is die.
All of you are going to watch.
That's what you wanted.
You wouldn't be satisfied with anything else.
People have been coming at me and attacking me and spiting me and backstabbing me and betraying me and liking to see my cry my whole life.
Offering them something else hasn't worked. Hiding hasn't worked. Compromise hasn't worked. Begging hasn't worked. Therapy hasn't worked. Drugs, legal and prescription. Friendship, love, philosophy, religion, witchcraft, meditation, hypnosis, vice, virtue. None of it has worked.
You wanna torture me to death?
Here ya go.
If you didn't want to torture me to death, this wouldn't have gone on for three goddamn years straight.
If you wanted to not hurt me, you would have stopped hurting me when I said you were hurting me.
This was never what I wanted ot what I agreed to or what I asked for.
“no one else can save you” ok cool well i don’t want to do it. i do not view myself as worth saving anyway. godspeed
