holding back his laughter is pointless — it escapes, rippling through the air like disturbances on a still lake. ren is no stranger to disapproval, whether for who he is, what he does, or the lengths he’ll go to in pursuit of his own path. akiko speaks of a father figure who might as well be in the room with them, casting a disapproving glance their way. not without reason, of course. ren would never fault someone for protecting those they care about, it’s only natural. but while he can understand where they’re coming from, that doesn’t mean he can always be what they want him to be or do what they expect of him. no one is perfect, and learning that akiko holds their own opinions about this man doesn’t surprise him in the least. to ren, people are as flawed as they are human. it’s those who chase perfection that only seem to make their imperfections more glaring — like specks of dirt on pristine marble or a smudge on an otherwise spotless window. he sees right through the polished facades people put up, yet he can’t deny that those flaws add a certain intrigue. after all, if people were nothing more than what they appeared to be on the surface, the world would become unbearably dull in no time.

❝ chasing perfection is a waste of time, i think. ❞ at first, that’s all he gives in response — a fleeting contemplative look before his gaze shifts, fixating on the glowing cigarette between his fingers. ash drifts downward in slow, weightless descent, and ren follows it with his eyes until it settles into an uneven pile on the ground.  

akiko’s apology is met with nothing more than a quiet hum of acknowledgment. whether they choose to share more or not doesn’t matter to him. if anything were to remain a secret, it would be safe with him. people’s lives are their own, and even if they confide in him, he sees no reason to broadcast their words from the nearest rooftop. it’s only when they bring up his smoking habit again that he finally turns to face them, one brow lifting, his expression twisting into a faintly distorted, bittersweet smile. there are plenty of other ways to keep one’s hands busy — ways that won’t slowly kill you. not that ren has to worry about that. his lungs, for all the cigarettes he’s burned through, are likely in pristine condition. almost as if they’ve never inhaled a single breath of smoke.

❝ smoking won’t kill me, if that’s something you’re worried about. ❞

the thought almost amuses him — the idea that, after everything, cigarettes would be the thing to finally take him down. that would be something. maybe it’s just the irony of it all that makes it seem funnier than it should. still, he chooses not to burden them with such thoughts. instead, he lets their words linger, taking their compliment in quiet acceptance. his voice, just another fractured piece of him that somehow still functions. ren watches the cigarette burn down to its end, unmoving even as akiko leans against him. he allows it, not because he merely tolerates it, but because he likes it. because it’s a comfort he rarely allows himself.

❝ hm, there aren’t many things about myself that i know how or when to share. i did once have a mentor, i suppose. i think relationships like that are important, even if i do not believe that there are bonds that are immune to the erosion of time. even familial ones expire eventually, would you disagree ? ❞

being prompted to think about their past isn't the worst thing in the world, even if it does make them just a little bit emotional whenever it comes up. thinking about those they've lost isn't a curse or a burden for them; while upsetting in the moment, akiko knows they're all looking down on them with pride at what they've managed to accomplish in their relatively short lifetime thus far. " he'd probably also disapprove of me associating with you, to be entirely honest. " they shake their head, stifling an amused chuckle at the thought of what detective hisao might say to them in such a situation. " not that i ever took his insisted fatherly advice too seriously, though. he also didn't like that i took a bullet for him, but that saved his life. "

they shrug, feeling the muscle in their left shoulder tug just a little bit harder than usual. " nobody's right all the time, i suppose. or, even if they are, it isn't in their best interest to be. " akiko resigns to themselves aloud before taking another drag of their cigarette, then ashing it onto the ground beneath them. " he was important to me, but the distinction between importance and blind idolatry is a good one to know of. a father figure, he may have tried to be, but he still wasn't perfect. " another drag, followed by a long, drawn out exhale of smoke from their lips. " nor did i ever expect him to be. i think that might've been his downfall, above all else; the pain of not living up to his own expectations for himself. "

akiko shakes their head, brow creasing for a moment. " sorry, that was... a lot. " they apologize, internally kicking themselves for dumping all of that onto him out of the blue like that. " it's not often i get the chance to share anything about him, so i suppose i wanted to kind of revel in it for a moment. " a form of apology is offered by way of briefly resting their head on his bicep before they take note of the way he chose to phrase his reason for smoking in the first place. " it keeps your hands busy, and it keeps time flowing, huh ? you know, there are plenty of other things you can do to accomplish those goals that don't slowly kill you. " even they don't know what the hell it is they're getting at with that, admittedly, but it still stands.

with a shake of their head, they return to resting on his right side, letting the cigarette burn further betwixt lithe fingers atop their lap, ashes slowly falling down onto the concrete beneath them. " but i think i've said quite enough about me, for the time being. i think you should tell me more about yourself. " akiko suggests, gently nudging him with their left elbow. " if nothing else, i just enjoy hearing you talk. the low rumble in your chest is pleasant on the ears. " admitting such a thing isn't too embarrassing, though it still makes their heart flutter just a little. " i must say, you're... rather comforting to be around, for a lack of better words. i can't quite put my finger on it, nor would i care to, but it's... nice, just being with you. "
