Cecil wasn't entirely a joke and uh... Dashcon? Like a running scam? I don't know that either (let me introduce you to someone who lived under a rock in the early 10s
To be fair with you, yeah, those were like, ten years ago, it's obscure knowledge from this website's weird culture ten years ago and it's difficult to really hold you up against that. It was just so. So surprising to me DLKFJDFKL
and oooh boy. Dashcon has been pretty infamous even outside of tumblr so i thought at least this would help situate it but man.
So it was in 2014 or something? a group started to express the idea of making a Tumblr Convention, which would be called Dashcon. This con was supposed to happen in a grand venue, with an hotel nearby, and was supposed to invite a lot of what made tumblr famous at the time. Teenagers from tumblr were encouraged to come to the convention, promised a lot of activities and being able to meet up with a lot of the stars we were talking about a lot.
This... dashcon was a complete catastrophe. Further down the line we learnt that into the organization group, most of them had given up all the management to the youngest of its members who got easily overwhelmed, which eventually led to everything at this con going incredibly wrong.
None of the people invited to the con showed up, wtnv especially after their fees were left unpaid. Only the tumblrian folks that came to it.
There was no activity. The venues were mostly empty. But hey, there was a ballpit!
Tumblr media
... yeaaah so, huh, that wasn't so great. (someone peed in the ballpit too, we learnt. The people who went to dashcon liveblogged it and those of us who stayed at home saw the horror unfold for them, and the "guys be careful someone peed in the ballpit" was one of those horrors that is still circulating on this website today)
At some point during the first day of the convention, "the hotel" they were staying at asked them additional fees of 70k $ that had to be paid under an hour or else everyone would be kicked out. As i remind you, a lot of the people who came to Dashcon were teenagers. Not exactly people who had a lot of $$$ in hand.
Mind you, they needed this money raised for the next days of the conventions, where they were still promising a wtnv liveshow to happen, while at this point the wtnv cast were already no longer involved with the project.
But don't worry, it was promptly replaced as the day went on with conference about why Bullying Was Wrong and How To Deal With Cyberbullying, and all that jazz.
This con was a complete disaster and went down in history as "this is what happens when tumblr gets too high with their own importance" or something. I think that's pretty unfair imo, because it was clearly more made from people who tried to exploit all of this and basically destroyed any sense of community that were at the time.
Ofc it's not that simple but it was one of the big moment of this website with like, the Mishapocalypse from 2012 (do you know about it. Or am i just doing a One Thousand Nights thing of teasing you tumblr history each post at this point.)
I think if you want to look deeply into it, Sarah Z made a decent video kinda digging into the details of this mess while also keeping it far less scattered than i did.
This is one of the pillar of the history of this website and i still see people talking about it everytime there's a failed convention somewhere. Like when the Frye Festival happened (some type of music festival on an island mainly targetting rich people that was extremely mismanaged, empty, and had people left to their own device), i've seen a hundred of memes about how it was "Dashcon for instagram and rich people". You will regularly see a ballpit edited into the pictures of such events.
So yeah.... history. I guess.

I think the dichotomy people see is that Lando was in a cave in Vietnam with no internet access when the whole Hamilton Twitter conversation was going on. Max Fewtrell said that he was without internet access. The tour site says that while you are in the caves and surrounding area you will not have cell coverage or internet. That they only have satellite phones for emergencies. So if he was in the caves Tuesday through Friday (Martin said it was four days), and only got back to civilization on Saturday there was no way for it to be him interacting on Twitter. So during that time someone else was posting a silly reaction gif to the biggest news of the off-season. Not saying you aren’t correct and he’s taken back control now that he’s back, but just lends to some doubt.
Max had no intention for his offhand comment to be taken as some kind of military time and geographic coordinates of Lando's exact whereabouts at that second lasfjlsahf. and the "four days" Martin referred to is the total time in Vietnam, not inside the cave as you can see from him like. literally posting stuff from not in the cave. in no way is Lando or Martin going to let y'all fans know precisely where they are at any given time, nor is Max. there's good reason for that!
I’ll go ahead and say that another anon already alerted me that this is all from a conspiracy theory to disprove any positive interaction every happening between Lando and Oscar and about proving car|ando being "real" in whatever way that means. I've already made it clear many times I don't do the whole 'rpf is real' thing and I absolutely have NO time for the way women and girlfriends are talked about in those spaces.
is it far more more likely that Lando and and his teammate were indeed tweeting each other in a lighthearted inconsequential way? yes. would it be extremely unprofessional for a PR person to fail to tweet anything for a month from Lando's acc if indeed they are running it for him? yes. and would it be extremely weird for a paid employee to suddenly take it upon themselves to reply to an untagged Oscar tweet in a very Lando way? yes. would it be unnecessary for the LN4 acc (Lando merch PR) to tweet at Oscar as well as someone else on Lando's team from his personal acc? yes. is it more likely that fans can't figure out where or when Lando was when he heard about the Ferrari news? yes.
are people making WAY too much out of this bc of some weird parasocial hope that Lando must react in a certain way to the Ferrari/Carlos news and if he doesn't then an entire conspiracy has to be put together to explain why? apparently!!
I already regret getting pulled into this babe so listen, maybe Lando pops up and says yeah I didn’t tweet that and I never talk to Oscar or he winks solely at car|ando fans on his next stream and states clearly that he was absolutely NOT online when those tweets were made. if that will make y'all happy then godspeed! but block my blog while you're at it ok ??
bc spending his much time and energy over ONE small silly twitter interaction has already exhausted me so idk how y'all do it every day !!

9. worst part of canon
The Great Divide lol? Jk, I generally like canon a lot, actually! I think it is such an amazing framework to play around in. But I do wish they had grounded the Southern and Northern Water Tribes in research/real-life cultural roots to the same degree as they did for the other nations. From what I've seen from circumpolar fans, it seems like it's more of a stereotypical and surface-level referencing vs the attention to detail given to the Fire and Earth and Air cultures. I wish canon had built that out more fully and deeply (or at least, built the North out if there was a theme being threaded around cultural loss due to the impacts of war).
13. worst blorboficiation
I feel like awkward turtleduck Zuko is the easy answer here...so I'm going to say Katara. I really like her, for her anger and her heart and her sense of justice and her sense of care and her dorkiness and hunger to learn. It feels like a lot of times she's boiled down to 'group mom' with no other layers, or to a girl boss/girl power fantasy that doesn't actually engage with her trauma and responses to it, or her ssensse of justice. She's a really great, complex, human character and I hate to see her filed down to just the one facet that lets her slot into the background of someone else's story.
(Which is maybe like the opposite of blorboification, to be put into the background lol? De-blorbified haha?)
16. you can't understand why so many people like this thing (characterization, trope, headcanon, etc)
I see a lot of headcanons/characterizations of Zuko as incredibly anxious, frequently to the point of paralysis and distress and needing rescue, and it's one of those things that feels totally divorced from his actual canon characterization to me. He is all action in canon. He throws himself at every problem face-first and he'll figure it out on the way. He has a big emotionally painful revelation that he was raised with lies and he goes to yell at his dad and point swords at him about it. He has an identity crisis so he does some vigilante stuff. A more experienced, older firebender gets in his face so he challenges him to a duel--three times.
He is not paralyzed by anxiety. He is a perpetual motion machine. He broods, he doesn't ruminate, and there is a difference.
25. common fandom complaint that you're sick of hearing
Oh man lol. Ignoring all the purity wank stuff (which. what a big thing to ignore.), how about when we complain about how other shippers are rude and mischaracterize us and come at the Zukkas, when we don't come for them. Which just goes to show how uniquely terrible and rude and awful and wicked and ignorant and mean those other shippers are, and how they don't know anything about canon either, and also their ship is stupid and racist and phobic and--
But don't worry, we don't come at other shippers.
(For the choose violence ask game!)

wow, godspeed with the 20 page paper!! what are you writing on? i saw that you study history, so do you have any particular time period or anything that you specialize in? it's always so interesting hearing the details of what other people study, it's like a whole other world! :)
i'm an english major so i read a lot for class and unfortunately don't have a whole lot of extra time to read for pleasure. i just finished a book called the hungry tide by amitav ghosh for class, and it was really interesting! it took me a little bit to get used to the writing style, but once i did i didn't want to put it down! i've been slowly working my way through queen in cornwall by rupert white, which looks at queen drummer roger taylor's early bands in cornwall and how queen returned there (to capitalize off his earlier success) for some of their early tours, and i've also started michael nesmith's autobiography, which is a quick read so far bc he's a wonderful writer. it's really impressive to me that you find time to read so many books for pleasure, and the beatles books are definitely something exciting to look forward to! what are some of your favorite books you've read so far this year?
if i could travel back in time, i would definitely go to queen's november 1974 concert at the rainbow in london! i have it on dvd, and the energy in the room seems so amazing, plus their earlier albums are my favorites, so the set list is a total dream for me!! what about you??
bye for now, i hope you have a great weekend and that your end of the semester is going well!! -🦋
I'm currently writing a paper for a class all about food history which I didn't expect to like so much, and I decided to write about the Irish potato famine which I've researched before in depth. I like to study modern European history for the most part with specialization in Western Europe/British/Irish history. Anything from the 18th century to the modern day I like, and I really like studying obscure things in history, too, so I'm sort of a jack of all trades. Although, I was talking with one of my professors recently and they suggested I try to do music history since I (obviously) have a passion for it. I may take their advice!
I have an English degree under my belt, too! I loved learning about British literature after 1800, and I read some cool books in another class all about fiction throughout history which was fun. I also took a class on horror and sci-fi literature which was neat. Also, those books sound awesome! I'm always looking to branch out in terms of reading stuff about other bands, so let me know how you like the books! So far this year, my top book is Britney Spears' memoir. I can't recommend it enough!!! I also read Man on the Run by Tom Doyle which is about Paul during the time of Wings and a little bit afterwards, and I thought it was super neat! I really liked that one a lot.
That would be a neat thing to go back to! :) I like Queen a lot and I think that would be so cool to see them perform live. I think I would be with you in the same boat, I would like to either time travel back to a concert or go back in time to see how things were in a specific time. I want to see Wings perform live during their Wings Across America tour or see the Talking Heads perform live in the 80s just to see David Byrne in his big suit doing his thing. But if I were just to go back in time and observe a place, I want to see how things were in Swinging Sixties London for the bright colors and fashion.
And I am having a great weekend so far! Thank you!! :)) I'm rooting for the both of us to do well in these final weeks/days of the semester! We got this!! I believe in us!! Have a great day, santa!
