#like currently i am learning finnish in English

Note
generally i do like how finnish makes use of grammatical cases (learning about locative cases as a native english speaker blew my mind tbh, why dont we have that?!?!?!) and its been fairly easy learning how to apply them, but for some reason i just still cant wrap my head around partitive case (i.e. when and when not to use it)
Hi!
Partitive is a difficult one for sure. There are a few places where it kind of makes sense to use it at all times:
When the noun is part of an action where (currently) there is/cannot be a result. For example: I am watering the flowers = "Kastelen kukkia" VS I water the flowers = "Kastelen kukat", the focus shifts. "Tanssin tanssia" (I dance a dance (I am currently doing it, might not finish it)) VS "Tanssin tanssin" (I dance this dance (a set dance which I will surely finish))
When there is a word expressing quantity: (works a bit like English, you wouldn't say "many the flowers" (paljon kukat), you would say "many flowers" (paljon kukkia), as in you aren't specifying the flowers and in general there are many of them) (Keep in mind that if you are asking for a price with "Paljonko ... on/ovat?", you do not use the partitive. "Paljonko (nämä) kukat ovat?" = How much are (these) flowers?
In existential sentences, for example "there are flowers in the garden" (puutarhassa on kukkia), where it's a general statement that there exist some quantity of flowers in the garden VS "the flowers are in the garden" (kukat ovat puutarhassa) where the flowers are known and there is a known quantity of them. Similarly, when you are asking if something is somewhere, you can use the partitive: "Onko puutarhassa kukkia?" (Are there flowers in the garden?) and "Ovatko kukat puutarhassa?" (Are THE flowers in the garden?"
When something is fully something or the whole thing/area is something: "Kukat ovat punaisia" (The flowers are red) VS "Kukat ovat punaiset" (These specific flowers that I am referencing are red). If you want to put "Kukat" into partitive, you must turn the sentence existential; "Punaisia kukkia on olemassa" (Red flowers (in general) exist) "Tässä on punaisia kukkia" (Here are some red flowers)
As a predicative: "Olemme kukkia (We are flowers) VS "Olemme kukat" (We are THE flowers (which you are referencing right now))
Then there are some things that you just have to remember:
When referencing a way in which something is done: "hiljaa" (quietly)
When referencing a relation between entities: "Kosketin kukan lehteä" (I touched the leaf of the flower), "Otin kukkaa kädestä" (I grabbed the hand of the flower) (Compare this to the first entry on this list)
After a preposition: "Keskellä kukkaa" (In the middle of the flower) "Keskellä kukkia" (In the middle of the flowers). You could also use the genitive and say "Kukan keskellä" and "Kukkien keskellä", but you would need to flip the word order accordingly.
In some sayings and other irregular stuff (of course)
The Finnish Wikipedia article also mentions that "the place expressions kaukaa, kauempaa, ulkoa, kotoa, vastapäätä are sometimes read as partitive, but from a linguistic-historical point of view they are a remnant of the Uralic proto-language separative." which of course caught my eye.
Another thing you should know with kukka:
"Onko sinulla kukkia?" - do you have flowers?
"Onko sinulla kukka?" - do you have a flower?
"Onko kukka sinulla?" - do you possess the flower (which I am referencing)
BUT:
"Onko sinulla kukkaa?" - do you have a flower (at all)? OR "do you have [green product which I think I shouldn't mention here] ?"
If someone asks you the latter out on the street, you can now answer accordingly to your possession of said green substance!

Weekly update
mentally and physically exhausting but also very rewarding week, first time in a lecture hall, informing myself about Aalto University, christmas cookies (first time Lebkuchen after 2 years...)
18.11.-24.11.2024
Studying
studied a lot for my hygiene passport test until thursday (passed the test with 36/40! )
my final finnish exam is coming up in 3 weeks and I am already a bit panicking (where did the time go???)
I informed myself about Aalto University in Helsinki because I got Youtube ads for it all the time and this university is actually so cool, it may be an option for me in the future
in the book I am currently reading was a passage about a research paper two characters will need to do and it actually sounds like so much fun (pic)
Languages
It is actually crazy how many different languages I hear and use every week because of my Finnish course. Obviously Finnish and sometimes English if my teacher needs to translate a word for us. I use English and German for my translations and notes. I also hear a lot of Russian on a daily basis because a lot of people in my course are from Russia/ Ukraine and our teacher is explaining it to them in Russian too. And that was not even all. One of the students speaks Spanish and I can actually still understand her a bit when she talks to herself in Spanish. Plus our teacher is learning Swedish and sometimes says a phrase in Swedish.
It is honestly a lot of fun to hear so many different languages and also try to understand things in Russian. (Although sometimes it can also be very exhausting.)
And then there are even more languages when I watch videos or listen to music.
I love languages so much.
Health
worst week with anxiety in a while: almost had a panic attack at the beginning of the week and decided to take some medicine to make it until I completed my hygiene passport test (the main reason for the anxiety)
although the medicine helped my mind and body to be calmer and actually function, my body was still very affected with digestion problems and all the fun more subtle body affects
but after I did this test my mind and body quickly felt better and now I am okay again
for a not so negative experience: I did an Afrotrendy Dance Workout for the first time and it was so much fun ! (even though I didn't manage the whole 35 minutes as it is exhausting)
For myself
after I did my hygiene passport test and I didn't have to study for that anymore I just spent the whole evening watching stuff in bed
cut my hair, it was long overdue
rewatched the first season of Arcane and am now almost finished with the second in 3 days (this series is such an artistic masterpiece on all levels, I am just speechless and want to talk about it so much at the same time)
this week's
reading / watching / listening
A Lesson in Vengeance - Victoria Lee
Arcane S1 & S2
Renegade (We never run) - Raja Kumari & Stefflon Don

20 days language learnign challenge
Day 13: How many languages are spoken in your country?
In my country of origin we have two official language: Finnish and Swedish. In some parts of Finland Sami is also a national language.
My current home country (Iâm hoping to get citizenship) Ghana has about 80 languages. Governement promotes 11 of those. They are:
Akuapem Twi
Asante Twi
Fante
Dagaare
Dagbanli
Ewe
Dangme
Ga
Nzema
Gonja
Kasem
I am actively learnign Dangme and passively Fante (meaning Iâm just catching some phrases from my friends but not really making any effort.) I used to study akuapem Twi (through Ma Yensua Twi book) and Ashanti Twi (through Pimsleur Twi) but didnât get very far.
Today I went to church and after that studied some policy documents for work (and fell asleep doing so. đŻ would recommend for insomnia).
Then we went for a long walk and I was teaching my child some Finnish through âI spy with my little eye â while doing so.
And While my kids were playing at basketball court I did a bit of Anki but not a whole lot.
Hereâs a picture of the place where I studied. My child calls this her favorite tree. She talk to her (yes, a girl tree) and waters her every time she comes here. â¤ď¸
Then I had a call with my mom. Always good to talk with mom. Miss her. Itâs hard to live in a different continent than your family sometimes. đ Anyway, kids got to practice their Finnish with grand mum. Thatâs always good.
Iâm so bad at remembering to use Finnish. English just comes easier for some reason. Like my brain is reprogrammed. If I try to even write a diary in Finnish it just takes so much longer and I canât find the words to express myself. Weird. Not good. Have to re-learn my own goddamn mother tongue.
Now I think I will watch the Jesus movie in Dangme and maybe some Finnish content too and call it a day.

tag 9 people you want to know better
tagged by @judyalvqrez đ
last song: Balance Slays the Demon by Old Gods of Asgard. I set it as my phone alarm. Because of that it'll be the first song that plays when I connect my phone/spotify to my car speaker, so I'll usually let it play on repeat if it's a short drive and I don't feel like changing it.
favourite color: BLUE. Mostly soft blues or more towards the blue-green side like teal.
currently reading: House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski - still đ
I think I'm about halfway now, but I had to take a break. Really good book, but I keep googling things and taking lots of notes in the margins. I'm going to pick it back up soon tho!
currently watching: Just started Sorjonen (Bordertown) and it's been really good! I also really like detective/crime drama shows. Plus it has Ilkka Villi đ I've also been rewatching Psych again.
last movie: Just watched Beetlejuice Beetlejuice last night! I really liked it. I think I'm going to rewatch the original movie today. After that I really want to watch Cuckoo.
sweet, spicy or savory: All of them - but if I have to choose then probably savory. I have to be in the right mood to pick sweet over the other two.
relationship status: In a relationship for the past 9.5 years and it somehow doesn't feel like that much time has passed. Time is weird.
current obsession: ALAN WAKE. I played the second game when it first came out, joked to a friend I would probably be obsessed with the game until at least January, now here we are and it's still going strong. I feel like I make new connections to something in the universe every time I replay. I just did a replay of AW1 and almost done with AW2 because my partner wanted to watch me play them.
tea or coffee: BOTH. I can't choose for this one! Coffee in the morning when I need that caffeine boost, green tea or black tea in the afternoon, and chamomile before bed. My parents have some bees too so I use the honey they give me to put in my teas and it's perfeccttt.
the last thing i googled: "tower of babel" I was talking to my partner over lunch about how I am learning some conversational Finnish (so far I can say Excuse me./ Do you speak English? / I speak English./ I am American./ I speak a little Finnish.) Was trying to make a joke about the tower of babel and had to google it to make sure I was remembering it right lol
tagging (with zero pressure!): I feel like most of my mutuals are mutuals with each other lol, so they have maybe been tagged previously. But - @ilkkawhat @variousblarghblanks @emmaswanned @daevguy @lostinthewoodsomewhere @autisticwriterblog @thedogtorwho @thelastdayalive
#usually dont do these but thought it could be fun!#i have felt really welcome in the alan wake/remedy community so im grateful for all followers/mutuals đ

Hiii Iâm back! It's been a pretty stressful and busy time at work, so I'm less online than usual, but still learning finnish daily! It's actually being my saving grace: getting to detach myself from work, routine and stress and just putting my head into something completely different that I enjoy doing. Putting a read more because I wrote a lot here:
I've been progressing with my exercise book, and learned how to express the need to do something 'i have to...' and also the imperative tense. Really useful stuff. I also finally finished trascribing all puhekieli 'basic rules' on my notebook!
Some new stuff in my daily learning routine:
I started listening to podcasts and short stories! I was a bit intimidated at first, but now I've been enjoying doing it every day when I am cooking, cleaning the house or even when drawing/working. I'm listening to a beginner's podcast and can basically understand a good 80% of it, which is making me feel so proud and motivated hahaha. The crazy thing is that even if I don't understand a couple of new words, I can follow the conversation and the topic and I always know what the host is talking about, it's crazy. I'll definitely continue listening to podcasts and stories daily because I think it's helping A LOT and truly making me feel like I'm making huge progress and my brain is enlarging lol.
I started using LingQ! The importing videos/podcasts feature is super useful, and I imported some videos in finnish from youtubers I found and having LingQ generate subtitles in finnish for me and translation in english, so I can study them is so useful. That way I can exercise listening to more puhekieli and expand my vocabulary. It helps that the videos are super fun and entertaining themselves, so I genuinely want to know what's happening hahaha. (one was a Sims4 house building video, another one a travelling vlog)
I tried writing some 'stories' for the first time, this is also an advice I heard from a video, that helps with getting your brain used to constructing sentences and phrases. I already did this in a smaller way, writing very short sentences practicing different grammar rules to commit them to memory, but this exercise really makes you put more effort into building longer and slightly more articulated sentences, like phrases you'd say to someone when having a chat, or thinking out loud. I decided to pick some random themes and just write what I can about them! The pink underlined words/verbs/adverbs are things I had to look up because I didn't know how to say yet. I think this is a pretty fun and creative exercise to do though, and I can see how it can make your brain faster at producing sentences on the long run :) It will be fun to keep doing this when my vocabulary grows and I can say more stuff! (I saw a writing exercise idea on tumblr that was describing your Dnd characters and something about their personality/stories, and I really want to do that!)
Overall, I'm feeling really good and motivated. I remember feeling a bit stuck a month ago, and now that feeling is gone, and I feel like I improved a lot. I really think implementing new exercises like the written stories exercise and especially listening a lot has been so useful and important into me feeling like I'm growing more in this language. I'm really glad I fought my inner doubt and saboteur and just did it. I also gander at posts written in finnish here on tumblr and realized I understand a good 70/80% of what's written in there. Sometimes more or less, depending on how long the post is or how specific the words used are. But that's pretty crazy to me and really satisfying!
Also, if you need some inspiration for your language learning journey or some good tips (like the listening to podcasts and writing stories I'm currently doing), please watch this video! It really inspired me to keep going in my journey :)

My Writeblr Introduction
Greetings, folks. You may call me Lucian. I am an autistic adult. I write in English, but I am learning German, so I will eventually write in German as well as in English. My writing journey began on August 5th, 2020, when I began drafting "Jaggedshadow's Vengeance", which was titled "A Raven Calls, Wind Answers" at the time (more on that later). I write fantasy, sci-fi, adventure, fanfic, flash fiction, and other genres. I plan to get into writing hurt/comfort, realistic fiction, and suspense. I may try to write romance, horror, and historical fiction.
My interests, especially when it comes to writing, lie in government, magic and magic systems; weaponry, the fae, folklore, anthropomorphic animals, fantastical materials, birds in general but corvids in particular, armor, werefolk, and many other topics.
I'm developing fantastical worlds three: Kello, Ouroboros, and Nexus. Kello, as its name suggests (kello is Finnish for clock or time), is a disk-shaped world ringed by two wall-like mountain ranges. It has magitech and a myriad of different fantastical creatures inhabit it. Ouroboros is an earth-sized torus world. Anthropomorphic black-footed cats, humans, and a myriad of creatures from European and North American mythologies inhabit it. It is high fantasy. Nexus is a planet, slightly larger than earth, with planetary rings orbiting its equator. Magitech is becoming prevalent, and much of Nexus is undergoing an industrial revolution due to the discovery of a name-pending magical synthetic crystalline material that can power machinery. Humans, anthropomorphic animals, and mythological creatures (some of which I'm putting my own spin on) inhabit Nexus.
I am working on various WiPs in various states:
WiP 004 âStorm of LightâÂ
CWiP 006 âSetting SunâÂ
CWiP 008 âA Story to tellâÂ
WiP 009 âPhoenix RitualâÂ
WiP 019 â[Sentinel]âÂ
âStorm of Lightâ is a major rewrite of âA Storm of Lightâ, a short story I set in Nexus. âA Storm of Lightâ, is based on a personal narrative essay I wrote for my composition class last year. It is pending writing. âSetting Sunâ is a Star Wars fanfic set in the Old Republic era. It is pending a considerable rewrite. It follows a shistavanen named Ilta, as she runs afoul of a pirate crew. âA Story to Tellâ is currently a flash fiction story about a dragon defending his territory. I will rewrite it into a short story to expand upon its themes and increase the tension. Set in Nexus, âPhoenix Ritualâ is a short story about a group of friends seeking immortality. âSentinelâ is a novel I'm developing. It is about a group of werewolves in Ouroboros, who are escaping religious extremist knights.Â

!! langblr introduction !!
salut !! i made this langblr to share my language learning progress and to be in contact with other people into languages<3 i'm especially interested in following people who post about their learning progress !!!
about me: - caroline (she/her), 21, finnish, uni student - other than languages i'm interested in almost everything art & culture related :) languages: - languages i'm concentrating on: french (high b1), german (b1), russian (high a2) - languages i'm learning on the side / have learned in the past: swedish (rusty b1), latin, italian (a1) (+ english). not planning on starting any new ones anytime soon..
language goals under the cut :)
some goals for this summer: - french: (1) finish b1 level textbooks and maybe go through grammaire progressive au français intermĂŠdiaire and/or avancĂŠ (2) get better at understanding natural speech (i can understand radio programmes etc just fine but movies, tv shows and youtube videos are a lot more difficult for me) - german: improve vocabulary, maybe go through a textbook (if i have the time) - russian: catch up on anki (i have over 5k reviews piled upâŚ.) and MAYBE finish my (final!) russian textbook - other: maybe try reading a book in swedish and listen to some easy italian podcast episodes, these aren't really that important long-time goals: - french: becoming as good as i am in english (or better..) - german: high b2 or c1 (currently my biggest problems are (1) vocabulary (2) can't speakâŚ..) - russian: being able to read russian lit (+ having basic conservations without too much difficulty) - swedish: reaching a level that's ok/nice for a finnish personâŚ??? as in being able to have a conversation if needed + being able to read contemporary texts (which i mostly am already) - italian: no big goals, i can already understand a lot based on french :) one day i'd like to be able to read italian books with ease and to speak semi-fluently but i'm in no hurry - latin: not forgetting anything i've already learned + finishing OLC 3 at some point (i only have 2â5 chapters to go)
#i'm not actually caroline my real name is just a bit too rareâŚ#& the cerf levels mentioned are not at all accurateâŚâŚ.but I wanted to give some indication of my levels#i'll be tagging all of my french related posts with âfrançaisâ; german with âdeutschâ etc#french langblr#german langblr#russian langblr#langblr introduction#language learning#studyblr#and even though i'm not going to start learning a new language in the near future that doesn't mean that i don't have any plans yet...#as in.. when i'm at some point fluent in french and italian i want to learn spanish as well; it doesn't interest me as much as the other 2#but it's still a pretty language and there's a lot of great spanish-language literature to read :)#and then i'd like to learn estonianâŚ#and i kinda want to learn hungarian and polish at some point..i most likely won't but they both look so nice#and finallyâŚ.when i'm retired i'm going to keep my brain sharp by learning arabic or ancient greek#oh and i really want to âlearnâ to read the other main scandinavian languages as wellâŚ.i just need a book and a dictionary for that though

I am taking an unnamed English course in uni currently, and let me tell you how horrible it is learning languages when you / your teacher are unmotivated. I did not choose to take this course as it is compulsory and the teacher seems unqualified for the whole job.
This is what applies to language learning- you HAVE to want to know every detail, every declension, every word to truly enjoy learning. Your teacher should enjoy teaching in return. Anything less and it will start to feel like a job very easily!
This is why I write my blog. I want you to be excited avout Finnish and not feel like it's an impossible task to learn!

I hope you don't mind my asking, but I'm currently plugging away at getting a college degree (honestly with a lot of misery and not much success) because I don't know what the alternative is. Do you mind my asking how you found another way forward?
Just checked my inbox for the first time in months, sorry I just saw this.... But in case you're still around:
I literally had a mental breakdown on my 4th year of uni, and eventually it led to me dropping out. Then I got a girlfriend in another country (who I had met during my erasmus exchange), moved there to work as an au pair for two years, and then went to live with her.
I found out I was unhireable to work with kids in this country unless I had a relevant degree, and decided to go to a trade school to learn how to be a "practical nurse", in my case specializing in childcare, and immediately after found a job as a teacher's assistant in a daycare. In English, to boot! I was lucky.
Trade school was only two years. Two years and I got a job super quick! And I do truly love my job, even though the kids drive me insane sometimes.
I went to uni for translation, and I liked translating, but the studying was a slog. Consider if the job that the degree is giving you access to is something you will really, really enjoy doing, and if all this suffering now will be worth it one day.
I could do trade school because it was very short and much more practical. There was less studying and more work practice, which suited me better and actually did wonders to teach me about the job. It was still hard, since it was in Finnish, which I was (and still am) not great at, and it switched to completely online bc i started it two months before the pandemic hit. But the end line did not feel so far away, and the certainty that i would have a job by the end of it kept me motivated.
Idk where you're from. I didn't have to worry about student loans, and I even got paid to study here in Finland. The au pairing also helped take me away from home and see the world for myself, since I wouldn't have been able to leave my parents' house as easily in my country.
There is also the option of doing an apprenticeship, working while you study, at least in this country, but you might find something suitable in yours as well; maybe something that is not glamorous, but they need people and they are willing to train them.
I don't know what to tell you! I wish you good luck in whatever you end up doing.

Hi! Iâm a Finn living in Ghana and married to a Dangme. I live in an area where there are a lot of Fante speakers but at home we speak Dangme and Finnish. I lied. My family speaks mostly English. But we are trying to speak more Dangme and Finnish. AnywayâŚ
Dangme:
Dangme is my main target đŻ language. I really really want to be able to speak with my in-laws.
Fante:
I rather reluctantly and passively learn Fante. Everybody speaks it at my workplace so I should learn it. But I donât wanna. Donât ask me why. I donât know the answer. đ¤ˇđźââď¸ Anyway a Fante teacher comes to our house every Sunday mainly to give my kids private lessons so they can catch up with their Fante peers. Fante is compulsory subject in their school. Iâm so far behind my kids already.
Twi:
Everybody keeps telling me to learn Twi instead because itâs somewhat of a lingua Franca here. I did at some point but it distracted my Dangme learning and also confused me because itâs so similar to Fante. I may return to learning Twi at some point. But I want to master Dangme first. This might be a dumb thing to do butâŚ
GSL/ASL
I am very interested in Ghanaian Sign Language and American Sign Language too. So sometimes I play around with those two. But like I donât have any pressure to learn them. I just want to be able to communicate with a lady who sells me fruits and honestly she is so sweet I wish to be her friend so hopefully đ¤ I can learn a few phrases at least to get started.
French
Ok so I was really burnt out and frustrated in Dangme for some time and kinda gave up a bit. So as there was a language vacuum in my life obviously I had to learn SOMETHING. I watched SKAM France and fell in love. It was Covid lock down and I had lots of time so I was learning that a bit. It was so easy compared to Dangme. Anyway I only did like very basics and then sifted my focus back to Dangme. But I do still follow some French media and books when I get a chance. Also my kids have to take French in school so I sometimes learn with them.
Swedish
Yeah. I was supposed to learn Swedish in school. I mean, I think I can still read some simple texts but ⌠I watched Young Royals and understood NOTHING. Ok maybe simple stuff like Jag älskar dig and stuff like that. If I had time I would revise Swedish. But alas, time is that one thing I lack these days.
English
Learnt it in school. I use it every day. Still not fluent though. I guess all I can do at this point is to read more challenging texts. I donât really have a plan. Iâm quite comfortable with my current level. Iâm not a perfectionist.
Finnish
Having lived 10 years abroad I sometimes feel my own language is a bit rusty. Still someone contacted me that I should start offering Finnish courses here in Ghana. I mean⌠I donât think Iâm qualified but if there are people who need a tutor I guess I can help. But Finnish grammar is a real bitch.
I think thatâs all for now. I try not to get involved with any more languages. Though my husband was suggesting we move to UAE for a while. Arabic? đ
Anyway, thatâs me. I would really like friends. Especially if you also struggle with learning rare languages. Or want help with Finnish.
Edit: I forgot Latin. I took 3 courses back in upper secondary school. But I can only remember: Ecce Laura puella Fennica i vinea. đ
Update: started learning teeline. It feels sort of like learning a language with all the special symbols.

⥠: which languages do you speak/have you learned in school?
I was taught English and German in school. (Besides Modern and Ancient Greek obvi). I am currently learning Spanish, Finnish and Latin through apps on my own time. And trying to practice my German again.
â : which language(s) would you like to speak fluently?
All the aforementioned ones hehe especially German because I once got two certificates but at this point I feel like I was taught this language in some dream⌠Wie schade!
In a world where I would have unlimited brain capacity, I would also like to know Icelandic, Albanian, Chinese and MÄori or some other Polynesian language.

Introductions!
During one of my insomnia-filled nights, I remembered I hadn't actually introduced myself.
So, who am I? To be honest, I don't entirely know. I have ADHD. I love different fantasy things, like movies, books, RPGs, board games and video games like Baldur's Gate 3. I'm currently reading the Dark Elf trilogy, and Feet of Clay by Terry Pratchett. I've done Vampire Masquerade, Werewolf Apocalypse and DnD. I do love Sci-fi too. Marvel (MCU and comics), SW, Star Trek, Stargate. Essentially, I'm a geek!
I am currently writing the second in a series of fantasy novels. It's about a London woman who goes through a magical portal and ends up in a magical world. She struggles with everything she's gone through. I have a habit of putting psychology into my books. Weird that... It's not like I am studying psychology currently... Ok, yes, I am. I like thinking of ways to put things I've learned into my novels.
I am also a non-native English speaker. I'm from Finland, and I also like putting subtle references in my books about Finland. I feel a bit like Ahti in Control and Alan Wake 2 randomly directly translating Finnish saying into English... They work well in fantasy world!
