Oddly enough the ingredients that they're compose of helps with the naming of the occupation cookies XD Strawberry Syrup is a new one and fitting since "blood" plus can work with his drinking habits; can't have alcohol in the silly cookie game lol XD. Concord Grape may work for Alchemist as concord sounds similar to concoction. Big agree about Wizard since he hides that he has ice cream in his dough. Ice cream might be a "taboo" ingredient. We need more ice cream lore XD
Ooh I like Concord Grape. And if we’re going with Strawberry Syrup for Vampire Cookie, it works better than just Grape as they’d both have two parts to their name
To be honest I just came up with the name Strawberry Syrup Cookie because looking at his design it kind of reminded me of the syrup they have at IHOP (I haven’t been there in a good long while though, so I don’t remember exactly what flavor it was, but I assume it’s strawberry)
What’s this about ice cream being a taboo ingredient?

@tropylium and @everything-narrative -
Yeah, I didn't include or mention every plant native to the Americas or every plant endemic to Afroeurasia (it's a long list). Obviously wheat isn't the only thing that doesn't originate in America! I was making an off-the-cuff gesture at a couple things at once - the incredible impact on global cuisine made by thousands of years of crop domestication by indigenous Americans; the undercultivation and underappreciation of various native plants (some of which are analogs of Old World plants!); a wave of, like, personal gratitude or connection I was feeling in the moment towards people from millenia ago; and my own personal taste in food.
And of course I'm glad not to have to choose! Of course.
But since we're here, and since I was thinking through a lot of this anyway, and since you've given me several examples of exactly what I was vaguely pointing to I'll get more specific.
A couple major themes: For several of these crops/plants, the Americas either have their own species which just aren't as commercially cultivated, their own species which aren't domesticated, or a wealth of species which serve similar culinary functions.
Carrots - Nope, not a loss, North America has wild edible carrots! A different species from European wild carrots, but still edible.
Celery - Yeah, as far as I'm aware, the Americas don't have a version of celery. And I never cook with celery and would happily go without it.
Cucumber and eggplant - Yeah, I'd be a little sad.
Spinach - Many American analogues. There are many related edible greens which behave similarly, like goosefoots/chenopodium.
Apples, oranges, lemons, bananas, peaches, pomegranate, dates, almonds - Alas, farewell, off they go.
(We do have native plums and cherries which are tasty, and we do have undomesticated almonds and crabapples.)
Hazelnuts and walnuts we have! Again, the dominant varieties cultivated are colonial but the hazelnuts and walnuts native to the Americas are just as edible!
Garlic - I specifically mentioned wild onions (as a gloss for the allium genus) because chives and ramps and dozens of other plants in the genus are native to the Americas and fill a similar niche.
Mustard, black pepper, turmeric, basil, thyme - oh well.
Parsley, rosemary - The leaves of various related species function very similarly.
Coffee, tea - tragic, but since there's yerba mate for caffeine, I'd survive
Grapes- there are native grapes! Including the species that became the Concord grape. Many of those species weren't domesticated, true, but they are present.
Barley - see, saying "no beer" is funny, because beer can also be made with corn! And it was, by native Americans. Barley beer is just one type of beer (wheat and oat and rice beers also exist). But also, I would take pulque or colonche over grain beer any day lol
(fundentally I just have more of an appreciation for gin and mezcal than some other options out there)
Yep, all the brassica oleracea varieties would be a loss and I would mourn it. (this was in the tags of the original post lol)
Rice, yes, sad. I specifically mention *wild* rice because I grew up with it and I adore it and it does grow here (though it's not as neutral-tasting as Oryza rices and I don't think it's as culinarily flexible, it's tasty of its own accord and beautiful also)
Peas - false? There's one species of pea that has been heavily cultivated and has become the most common culinarily, but there are dozens of species of peas and vetches, including 54 in the Americas!
Soy - yeah, a tragedy. Still, there are other legumes
Stone fruits and garlic - mentioned above, the Americas have some stone fruits and several alliums.
Mint - There are mints native to the Americas! I've eaten them.
Domesticated animals - Partially true - cows and pigs aren't native to the Americas and some of the other animals on the list occur here but were not domesticated. There are domesticated ducks and turkeys, though, and there are (undomesticated) native rabbits, geese, and sheep/goats. Which is part of what I was thinking about when I made this post - I don't personally consume many animal products, and neither did e.g. the Aztecs, for whom meat was a relatively small portion of their diet and cheese was absent. But when I did, bison meat and cheese is wayyyyy tastier than that of domestic cattle... And for textiles, wool is fantastic and you can get it from llamas and alpacas!
Bees - Yes, the domestic honey bee is not from the Americas, but there are cultured honey-producing bees here! Mayan stingless bees were and still are cultivated for their honey. And there are honey wasps as well!
Part of what I was thinking about is just how much of so many modern cuisines (Italian, Himalayan, South Indian, Mexican, Thai, and Korean were some examples floating around my mind) draws on foods originally from both hemispheres. Part of what I was thinking about was how much modern American food and the crops we grow are heavily shaped by which foods were domesticated first in the other hemisphere and what was most valued colonially - just how many foods I personally have never even heard of that were once (or presently!) important to millions of people's everyday lives.
and partially I was thinking -
sweet potato! cashews! chia! guava! papaya! avocado! pecans! mexican oregano! allspice! pineapple! nopales! sunflower seeds! peanuts! passionfruit! amaranth! chestnuts! quinoa! blackberries raspberries salmonberries mulberries cranberries chokecherries strawberries gooseberries huckleberries beautyberries elderberries juneberries hell yes.
the Americas really popped off with potatoes, peppers, tomatoes, maize, and winter squashes, and most beans, and cocoa. if I had to choose only crops native to the old world vs crops native to the new world I would pick new world in a heartbeat. there are native onions and grains and rices that are not endemic. the loss of wheat would be a tragedy but the world without tomatoes would be so so so dark
#have been going insane about this for days sorry#no offense meant towards either of y'all and I hope it doesn't come across that way#sidebar yes the old world is most of the population and most of the landmass and most of the domesticated animals#I'm not saying that's not... valuable?#I'm just saying that in some universe in which that entire part of the world didn't exist I could still be culinarily happy

i had this typed up for my newsletter im working on lol. i solved one of my health mysteries. tl;dr: food allergy
---
having a completely fucked up sleep schedule goes hand in hand with having a fucked up food schedule, which means my last meal is when the sun comes up and i dont get hungry until late in the day. any attempts to break this pattern risk waking up ravenously, eating-raw-meat-out-of-the-freezer hungry in the middle of what was supposed to be my sleep cycle. i do whatever the opposite of torpor is. i invented a worse way of mammalian living. do NOT steal.
so anyway, every night before i go to bed, i would fill my empty tummy with a delicious peanut butter and strawberry jelly sandwich. this is because strawberry is the tastiest, most accessible jelly. let me explain: when you go to a diner and search through the little jelly basket with all the jellies in it, you will see these flavors and these flavors ONLY!!! (ranked by deliciousness):
strawberry
orange marmalade
mixed berry
the putrid concord grape
orange marmalade is a distant second to the only good jelly on this list. i like strawberry jam.
in the mornings, i started eating special k cereal (red berries, again, the only good one) hoping the vitamin c would cure whatever was causing me to feel so fucking sick and miserable on a daily basis. every day i would wake up exhausted and every night i would go to bed in terrible pain from my entire chest down. it was hard to explain my symptoms outside of just feeling like total shit generally. to be honest, i thought it was just the result of bad living. my chest was often tight but i attributed this to how freakishly tense my body is from years of letting anxiety run ramshod over my brain and body. ive had this problem for over a decade.
recently, i went on vacation for a few days to d.c. with my boyfriend, adam. on the evening of the second day, as we shared a plate of fried chicken livers as romantically as possible, i told him, "i feel so good. this is the best i've felt in a long time!". and i really meant it. the rash on my face had cleared up significantly, my stabbing chest pain i had attributed to heartburn/dying was gone, and best of all, i felt like i could breathe. my chest no longer felt like it was being crushed and my lungs didnt feel like they were sticking together instead of inflating. my legs didnt even hurt as much when i walked, which seemed like a massive achievement to me.
i came home from d.c. late in the evening and returned to my nightly ritual sandwich. that's when i noticed, for the first time ever (now that i was unburdened with terrible pain elsewhere), that my mouth was burning and tingling in a way that might be textbook anaphylaxis.
i thought back to the time when my sister told me she liked the taste of bananas but they were too spicy for her. and how i laughed at her and said "what the hell are you talking about", which in turn lead to the discovery of her birch allergy. i also thought back to high school when i suddenly started feeling very ill, tired, and weak almost every single day. but i would still *~bravely~* find the strength to go into work nearly every day. i would be sooooo hungry by the time i got to my job immediately after getting out of school and wouldnt get to eat until i got home at 9pm. so i would commit a little corporate theft and eat some sample sized special k (red berries) intended for patrons. hmm. a pattern is emerging.
now i have an epipen and blood work being processed by a doctor who expressed mild horror at how frequently i was dosing myself with a little bit of near death experience just for delicious strawberries. as it turns out, you feel a lot better once you stop poisoning yourself on a daily basis. at no point did i ever think i was going to die from any of my various problems despite having every symptom that obviously points at a reaction. i dont know. i thought i just rolled some bad genetic dice and got stuck with the shitty body lol.
i did sort of eat the rest of the sandwich tho. it was good. no ragrets

You get a lot of super heavy asks sometimes. I hope it's ok to ask some lighter questions for fun. I don't know why they're all food based. I think I'm just hungry haha.
Do you prefer jelly, jams, preserves, or marmalades? What's your favorite flavor of them?
I tried boysenberry jam the other day and it was...uh...a flavor for sure.
Do you like chunky or creamy peanut butter (if you eat peanut butter)? If you had to choose between a peanut butter and banana sandwich or a fluffernutter (marshmallow fluff and peanut butter for anyone wondering), which would you pick? PB/banana/honey/chia seeds is a personal favorite. I feel very bougie when I eat that lol.
What's your favorite pizza topping? Do you like NY style, thin crust, sicilian, deep dish, or pan pizza? Have you ever tried cauliflower crust pizza? I feel like we should just leave cauliflower alone before it gets a superiority complex. Also, why cauliflower crust? What about broccoli crust? Carrot crust? Parsnip? Potato? (Ooo not gonna lie, a hashbrown crust breakfast pizza could be delicious. Hashbrown crust, sun dried tomato sauce, sunny side up eggs, arugula, maybe some Canadian bacon, some cheddar cheese...I might be on to something here...).
Do you have a good challah bread recipe? Have you ever used challah to make French toast?
Eggs over easy, scrambled, sunny side up, poached, fried, soft boiled, or hard boiled? If scrambled, do you add milk? (I learned recently IHOP adds, of all things, pancake batter to their eggs to make them light and fluffy).
Favorite type of cheese?
Lastly, iced tea, lemonade, or fruit punch?
It depends on the fruit. Lemon curd is incredible, and a good Concord grape jelly (like real jelly not artificial flavor jelly) is really good. I used to always take the orange marmalade jar from the jams and jellies assortment that one of the car companies sent freelancers on the holidays, too. My favorite, though, is my mom's strawberry jam. I haven't had any in like 4 years, bc we don't live close enough to get any, and that makes me sad.
Again, it depends on the usage. For peanut butter cookies, chunky peanut butter. For sandwiches, creamy by preference, but chunky isn't the end of the world. Peanut butter/banana is pretty good but if I want salty/sweet with bananas, I'd prefer to split a banana in half lengthwise and put garlic hummus on it, then pile clover sprouts on that. It's crunchy/sweet/salty/green. Very nice flavor/texture contrast.
I like white pizza with grilled artichoke hearts and baby bella mushrooms. I used to really love ham and pineapple but for obvious reasons I don't eat that anymore. (I love flavor contrasts.)
I used to love thin crust, and it's my mom's favorite, but that doesn't work as well gluten-free. My favorite pizza type is the type I can eat. Except for Chicago deep dish, it's just not my thing.
Cauliflower crust is just fine. The reason for using cauliflower is that it has a very neutral taste and is low-carb and gluten free, which none of the other choices really are, not all 3. Hash browns actually make a really good pie crust for a gluten-free quiche; I make that every so often for dinner.
I have a couple of very average gluten-free challah recipes, and we usually buy ours from New Cascadia, a local bakery. Emet makes challah French toast out of the leftovers every week.
Over easy, soft or hard boiled, scrambled, sunny side up, poached... I just really like eggs. Buttermilk in scrambled eggs is really good, it gives the flavor a certain something. A little sharpness kind of like cheddar cheese does.
Favorite kind of cheese: the kind in my hand and about to be put in my mouth.
Lemonade. Iced tea just tastes like chewing a teabag after all the good tea has been brewed out of it, and the taste of fruit punch is heavily associated with being given fruit punch with aspartame in it as a child, getting migraines and throwing up, and then being told I'm "Being Dramatic" by adults. It tastes of gaslight, nausea and powerlessness. No thanks.

Whisky makes me sicky. Responsible for one of the worst blackouts I've ever had. The worst one was from red wine. I used to say I didn't like wine but within the last couple years I've developed a taste for Sake. I don't get a bad hangover with it and it makes me feel sexy.
I've never blacked out but just the smell alone of whiskey or any dark drink makes me get woozy and dry heave. And I think wine is nasty too lol. But I have found out mixing concord wine with grape Fanta is good and yes I can agree I felt sexy AF like you wouldn't believe

I’m the one who struggles to be in character lol
((I got some advice, so I'm feeling a bit more confident XD))
🌿So, Bloody Mary... better avoid saying that in the mirror in the dark... why are you here? If you guys are here to make fun of me because I got arrested, I can explain...
🥂Well, we know why you were arrested! But of course, we also know it wasn't very fair why you were arrested.
🌿I mean, I don't really mind being a vampire but... I've only accidentally almost killed two cookies.
💿Wait I thought he was innocent! C'mon, make up your mind already!
🍅Now now, settle down, we don't wanna scare him. Now continue Haze.
🌿Well, it's not like I wanted to... I didn't really mean to. But I saw two cookies about half a year ago and I was so hungry and... the next thing I knew they were on the ground, their strawberry jam leaking out from their bodies... I didn't want them to die, so I thought if I turned them into vampires, than they wouldn't have to worry too much. But I heard they skipped town once all these disappearances started happening.
🥂So you knew them?
🌿Yeah. Their names used to be Concord Grape and Cotton Candy Grape Cookie. Now they go by Pinot Noire and Rosé Cabernet Cookie. I even had Pinot Noire on the show a few times, but they didn't do anything. They're just as innocent as I am. And I know that!
✨Are there any other vampires that you're aware of?
🌿No, not really.
🍅And do you know how cookies managed to find out that you're a vampire?
🌿Everyone knew. Anyone who listens to the radio knew. I guess they figured that since vampires eat strawberry jam and there was strawberry jam at the crime scenes, they connected it to me. Which is bullshit. I have an alibi during those disappearances.
💿What's an alibi?
🍅What's your alibi?
🌿I was asleep.
🍅Well, I guess that's as good as it's gonna get.
🥂But that doesn't really tell us anything. We need more evidence.
🍅Right, than lets go look for some.
💿No seriously, what's an alibi?
🍅Bloody Mary📔 🧡Hurricane💿 💛Sparkling✨ 💙Midnight Kiss✨ and 🌿Purple Haze💜

Daisy, Iris, Orchid?
Munday flower asks - (accepting)
daisy - what’s your best childhood memory?
Playing with dinosaurs in preschool with friends that I still know today. I was the pterodactyl, still my favorite pff. Or maybe playing on the beach and making “magic soup” with my cousin, aka a bucket filled with ocean water, seaweed, rocks/sand, and whatever else we could find. I don’t really remember much tbh? I was usually the odd one out.
iris - favourite 90s song?
Not even kidding it’s the Casper the Friendly Ghost Theme, I remember dancing in my living room as a kid while playing the VHS on repeat. It came out in ‘95 it counts lol.
orchid - favourite fruit?
Strawberries or lychee. Close runner up are concord grapes, I love the jelly-like interior, they’re so different than other kids of grapes and I can never find them ANYWHERE.

Favourite flavour of jam?
I really like concord grape jam, and I think I’ve tried huckleberry jam that was really really good.
Which cottagecore hobbies do I want to pick up?
Gardening, going to farmer’s markets, and making my own jam and stuff. Those would all be really cool. Basically everything lol
thanks for the ask!

LOL you nailed it, actually— it's the intensity of the flavor! I don't particularly like green or red grapes, but I looooove concord, which is what fake grape flavoring seems to be based on. (and ohhh man, fresh grape juice???? 🤤)
...I've also been known to munch on baker's chocolate, which tells you something about my taste buds lmao
*stalks tags* SO cucumber ice cream was a seasonal summer flavor at a small chain local to the Boston area called JP Licks ("JP" stands for Jamaica Plain, which is the neighborhood the first shop was opened in). It was...not super popular (because I mean, cucumber ice cream, people were puzzled), which is why it was discontinued, but it was DELICIOUS— it was almost halfway between minty and melony, and it was incredibly delicate; it reminds me of green tea ice cream in like, the weight of the flavor, I guess? (I can't think of a better way to put it lol)
It also wasn't very sweet, which I loved because I am so picky about sweet things it's easier for me to just say I don't like them and list exceptions 🤣
I haven't seen it since I was in high school and I mourn it every summer, sob.
honestly that sounds great - i love cucumber and "not too sweet" is also a thing that i am always looking for (i like sweet things but i get overwhelmed by it very easily)
also i'm curious what exceptions you have for sweet things now lol
(also don't worry it's very gratifying to have people respond to my tags LMAO)

When you said grape flavored ice cream, I pictured it to taste like that powdered crap to flavor drinks and started gagging lol. I actually want to try it, though. It's an actual ice cream and not sherbet? That's pretty cool actually.
Hey love!
Noooo lol, nothing at all like that, I swear. Think like the opposite of that lol.
Imagine the best possible concord grape flavour plus the smoothest and best quality ice cream you have ever had. It’s basically a sweet, creamy heaven and really should be sold everywhere because nothing is better. 🍇

I was thinking about Concord last night and how I would go about writing a fic about him if I ever got around to it but with my track record I probably won’t lol and how the fuck are they going to explain this new purple platypus to Linda? There is no way she’d believe that Buford accidentally made a Perry clone by dumping a box of grape juice on him, but it’s not like she can just not notice him
What if a purple platypus clone was actually created outside of the story Phineas was telling, only it isn't evil, just mischievous and possibly feral. Once the kids get their hands on it, they decide to call it Concord, named after Officer Concord the Juice-Time Juice Box Flavor Cop. It would give us more of a chance to see Perry react to the whole thing outside of slapping one away with his tail once the kids start attacking them.
Okay but Phineas and Ferb totally would adopt an “evil” grape juice platypus sfkjhdskfa
So does it happen like as Phineas is telling the story? Like Phineas starts the story and Buford pours grape juice all over Perry in real time and voila, a new platypus is born? Because that would be fantastic omfg. Concord just fuckin books it and makes a mess of the neighborhood and the kids have to follow him and eventually Isabella puts her animal catching patch to good use but luring him over with a bowl of grape juice (desperate times) and now they have another platypus :,)
I’ve really started to love the idea of Phineas and Ferb having a second pet ever since the first Coby the Capybara post, so I’m kinda of in love with this. I do have to ask, though, is Concord an anthropomorphic grape juice platypus kinda like Perry, or is he a normal feral platypus? Or is he both, and he’s kinda like Dennis the rabbit in that he knows what he’s doing but he’s a little shit anyway?
I feel like regardless of what type he is, Perry would hate him. It’s almost ironic considering that his best friend is literally the least competent evil scientist in the world, but Perry’s all about order, and Concord is just... not that. Poor Perry would spend his time trying to fix Concord’s messes and growling at him and basically telling him to go the fuck away and Concord just kinda hangs out and fucks the house up like the good boi he is lmao
#i mean ig she could not notice him that could be the plot line fsjkahdfkjasl#but i kinda want him to just be the family pet 2.0
