Elven tattoo headcanons
I think tattoos will never be fully permanent for elves, they fade every hundred years, maybe they'll last a few hundred if your ink is of the highest quality & your tattoo artist is exceptional. It's not a flaw with the tattoos that they're never permanent permanent, elven biology just doesn't allow for it.
Miriel, being brilliant with a needle as ever & Finwe, who was a patron of the arts, invented tattoos in Cuiviénen.
Most of the Minyar weren't so fond of them but they were appreciated by several of the Tatyar & Nelyar.
It started out as Finwe just… painting on himself & his GF because why not? He started out using henna commonly used by his friend Elwe & the Teleri but he liked color so then he & Miriel decided to be ✨experimental✨ & *boom* tattoos! He developed the ink & she learned how to work a needle in skin.
Finwe has one on his back that Miriel did right before she got pregnant with Feanor that he never let anyone touch it up after she died even though it was fading, until Feanor got older and asked for his dad’s permission to do it himself.
Miriel used to have a tattoo on her back as well like Finwe’s but she didn’t get it redone after getting reembodied. She also used to have a few on her arms and legs and was overall quite bohemian before what happened, happened. She doesn’t regret co-creating tattoos but they don’t fit her anymore.
Feanor has 1 segmented tattoo along his collarbone. He has 2 stars about an inch tall/wide closest to his heart representing his parents, a slightly smaller but almost as big one near them representing himself, and seven even smaller ones trailing his left collarbone representing his sons.
Nerdanel doesn’t have tattoos, she’s chill if her kids want them but they’re personally not for her.
Fingolfin doesn’t have any for several reasons, they don’t fit him, he’s half Vanya & they’re not really into tattoos, & they were partially invented by Feanor’s mother so it’s weird. Findis doesn’t have any for the same reasons.
Finarfin despite also being half Vanya & closer to that side of his family than Fingolfin, is actually open to them despite not having any yet. He just does not gaf about what other people think.
Earwen has a ton of aesthetically pleasing sea themed motifs on her body.
Fingon has an eagle tattoo.
Maedhros has the star of Feanor tattooed on him but that’s it.
Maglor has a bunch of well put together gorgeous tattoos including both music motifs and symbols honoring his family like the Feanorian star and something for Elrond & Elros as well. They fade after he starts wandering the shores but he gets most of them redone in Valinor.
Celegorm used to have tattoos symbolizing Orome’s hunt but he lets all of them fade away in middle earth. If he ever joined the hunt again after getting reembodied, I imagine he only ever got 1 more tattoo symbolizing Orome. He’s accepted a part of his old life again but it’s not going to be the same.
Aredhel has a bow & arrow tattoo.
Curufin also has the star the Feanor & that’s it.
Caranthir used to have some in the equivalent of his teenage years but cringes looking back at them. They didn’t actually look bad at all and were quite nice but he just gives off the impression of someone who’d be unimpressed with his old self. He has none now.
Amrod & Amras get whatever they’re feeling whenever they’re feeling and change up their tattoos every couple centuries.
Galadriel has none because she thinks Feanor would feel smug if she did get them & she can’t let him be satisfied. (She loves henna though!)
Finrod has a bunch of different motifs representing all 3 of the clans that make up his heritage.

anyway, this is my design + doodles for Celegorm, and also Huan I guess! Forgot to add notes to these drawings, but got one armoured version of him and one of him in more casual wear.
I decided to give him more tattoos than just the star of Feanor (which in itself I decided to make rather big and on his back). The other tattoos mostly just represent his time with Orome and Huan/being a hunter and stuff, and idk I just saw Celegorm as having them.
Also despite how kinda feral I made him look, I imagine he can be very charming, and is a lot smarter than he looks. Is quite good at acting more heroic than he actually is, and can be just as manipulative as his younger brother, Curufin. He’s less book smart than Curufin, but surprisingly socially smart, along with being a scarily talented at tracking people and things down. though he’s also very crude and frat bro like more often than not, and as a result people often underestimate his intelligence.
for other designs, see: Maedhros and Maglor (edit, the rest of the brothers:) Caranthir, Curufin, Ambarussa
(also sorry for inconsistent style, i’m forever working on figuring that out and experimenting with things)

maybe arafinwe or nolofinwe is suspicious about celegorm getting orome tattoos, or feanor is highly suspicious that turgon got a vanyarin symbol to appeal to elenwe?
Celegorm is a good one! See, he definitely doesn't respect his uncle's authority t police his body. But on the other hands, he delights in showing of his body, and in making people uncomfortable. Arafinwe asks if Celegorm got a tattoo on his shoulder blade, as it's common for Orome's hunters to get a tattoo somewhere that can be easily covered/uncovered. Celegorm says, no, and he'll show Arafinwe his shoulder to prove it! Arafinwe didn't actually ask for that but its, reassuring, at least until Celegorm starts taking off his pants. And Celegorm climbs on a table with his dick in Arafnwe's face so Arafinwe can see Celegorm didn't get a tattoo on is thigh.
Also, if Celegorm did have a tattoo, he would still totally strip and show it off, especially to someone who would be horrified by it.
Feanor and Turgon: I bet Feanor brings it up at the most awkward moment possible. Like the day Turgon comes back from his honeymoon.
Feanor: "I'm surprised you show your face here."
Turgon: "Why would a prince of the Noldor be ashamed to be in Tirion?"
Feanor: "With a Vanyarin wife and a nearly Vanyarin father, I expected you to become a Vanya yourself and leave us without your idiocy."
Turgon: "Wow, rude. And I'm Noldorin, and would never abandon my people."
Feanor has backed Turgon up against a wall. "So you still follow proper Noldorin traditions, and didn't surrender your mind completely for blissful ignorance? You still think for yourself rather than blind obedience to the Valar?"
Turgon: "Yes! Also, the Vanyar have plenty of great scholars."
Feanor: "They have poets, you mean. But if you aren't Vanyarin, prove it."
Turgon: "How can I prove a negative?"
Feanor: "All of the Valar's sycophants mark their bodies indelibly with the emblem of their master. If your skin is free of such vulgar scrawls, you may be telling the truth about still being Noldorin. So show me your body."

Incomplete list of Celegorm’s tattoos (all monochrome)
The emblem of Orome as a tramp stamp. Got it immediately after being joining the Hunt
The Star of Feanor, taking up the entire space between his navel and his pecs. Got it when Feanor was exiled to Formenos
“No Regerts” in Quenya just below his collarbones. Got it as soon as he could find someone to tattoo him after Mandos pronounced the Doom.
“Bold of you to assume I’ve reached my peak dumbass” in Taliska across his shoulder blades. Got it before he learned Taliska. The Man who tattooed him said it referred to the way he surprises his enemies in battle.
“Death we will deal him ere day's ending” in Taliska on right bicep. Got it from the same tattooist as the previous one, after spending six months learning Taliska. Celegorm did not break eye contact the entire time he was being tattooed.
Huan’s footprint on his right shoulder. Got it when he saw that Fingon had Maedhros’ name tattooed on his thigh (high enough that no one would see unless they were staring in the baths).
A penis on his left ankle. Got after a lost bet with a fellow hunter in Valinor. The loser had to “get a dick tattoo.”
His first boyfriend’s name on his left butt cheek, the words “is incredibly boring” added underneath after they broke up.
Tribal sleeve on his left arm - I am unsure if it actually has meaning or just looks cool. Got it in Valinor, probably while drunk.
Incomplete list of tattoos after he’s reborn:
#YOLO across his pecs.
Star of Feanor on each shoulder
Bow and arrow tramp stamp that is just different enough from Orome’s symbol
A raised spear holding up a necklace with a shining gemstone taking up his entire back
Huan howling on his left calf, with “466″ written beneath it
Every single scar he got in his first life, in silver that matches his hair and glitters like a Silmaril in moonlight
This isn’t out of guilt - the scars were his, proof of every fight he won, and Namo took them away
#Celegorm#silmarillion#Headcanon#tyelcormo#silm#hasty riser#tatttoos#elves with tattoos#i may reblog this if i think of more#boring is the greatest insult possible in Celegorm's mind#celegorm thinks the second kinslaying was justified#but in retrospect could have been planned better#so that he survived and fewer civilians died#he has no regrets whatsoever about stabbing Dior though#My writing

celegorm + fashion
@vardasvapors Blood and bone. It’s not weird! It’s an Orome’s hunt thing, they all did it! (But weird rituals - respect or life = serial kille–um, different essay) So leather cord and teeth as jewelry, bones in his braids, that sort of thing.
A lot of greens and browns, lighter colors in Aman and darker ones in Beleriand, for character progression purposes and bc Aman was shinier and as a hunter he likes to Blend In. (Lies, he likes to sidle up to Caranthir and go “whatcha doin’” to see if he can make him fall off whatever he’s sitting on; he also likes to sidle up to the people he’s about to kill and go–well. You get it.) If we’re talking the formal events that render him ooc there’s an abundance of opals and black metals. He’s also very well-inked, because I hc tattoos to be a thing for Orome’s followers.
I’ve, ah, forgotten sometimes but I like to draw him in thigh-high boots. They make his ass look better and that’s precisely why he wears them. Also, while this doesn’t really count as fashion per se, he dyes his hair, he is a bottle blond slut,

‘veiled soon-to-be-ex-catholic hysteria’ is SUCH a LOOK
Real talk: practical theodicy is the most ... fascinating thing in a world where the metaphysical questions about souls and afterlives and whether or not god and angels etc exist and what they are like, 90% directly answerable. The faith aspect is pushed like, waaaaaaay back to this tiny sliver of content covering ‘why does it happen THIS way for US and THIS way for YOU’ and ‘but what about the far future tho’ and ‘okay but like, OUTSIDE the universe there’s...?’ and things, because most of the rest of it is just, confirmed in-universe fact! Cut out the middleman, just expose the important non-semantics! it’s really great. also: “And for that reason I said that if your tale is true, then all in Arda is vain, from the pinnacle of Oiolossë to the uttermost abyss.”
Finrod.... :((((((
also andie sorry for clarifying at your clarifications endlessly but don’t acknowledge this apology or we’ll never escape
I’M SORRY about clarifying your clarif-- okay no
linguisticparadox replied to your post: gurguliare replied to your post: ...
I was gonna be mad until you amended it to “beloved twit” bc I love Finrod with all my heart and soul
sjhdfbsd YES an important distinction (finrod = literally my favorite silm elf...technically I sooooort of sliiiiightly love galadriel and elrond more, but only in lotr not in the silm, i don’t really consider them silm characters, and silm and lotr characters are apples to oranges for me)
actualmermaid replied to your post: crocordile replied to your post: ...
I am so much of a Feanorian fan that I went and had their symbol tattooed on my body but in what universe are they textual underdogs, like. really. they have the best stuff in the book but making them 100% sympathetic and always justified in everything they do robs them of most of what makes them compelling in the first place
It’s like, the Godfather if the Corleones really were a respectable olive oil business or smth. idk. that’s a dumb example. but just yeah, 100% this.
kareenvorbarra replied to your post: crocordile replied to your post: ...
“the narrative is biased against the feanorians” discourse is still one of the most puzzling things i’ve ever seen in this fandom
I just have to sit down and chinhands sometimes. Like. Do you know the sheer number of characters I would kill to have half as much juicy in-text character-clarification and focus and description and nuance and dialogue and filled-in timeline details as the Feanorians....(I mean, I GUESS Finrod technically gets several times more dialogue than any other Finwean except maybe Galadriel (in lotr), but still...? that’s, a philosophy debate? whereas the whole narrative is focused around the Feanorians’ tragedy - yes, all about tragic flaws and self-destructiveness etc of course, but it’s still written/presented as MUCH more similar to...Turin rather than Sauron, for example)
psychopompious replied to your post: actualmermaid replied to your post: …
also seeing as I adore the Arafinwions, maybe I’ve finally found the answer to why I can’t write any of the Feanorions to save my life (with the lone exception of Celegorm, but does he really count)
djhfsjf you know Celegorm IS kind of a weird standout one isn’t he? I wonder what it is about him…I was always very taken with his hippie animal-talking Orome fanboying nature guy aesthetic + psycho murderer who just like stands up and yells about shit to rile people up and just grabs ppl he thinks are hot bc he wants them and like, yells curses at his horse and dog when they don’t obey him like idk he’s fantastic man, and v different from most evil tolkien characters….tolkien is really into the sneaking/scheming sweet-voiced hidden villainy thing and Celegorm is, so not that
#WHY DO MY REPLIES BLOW UP LIKE THIS#'bc you answer them in real time rather than the next day like a normal person'#i love iiiitttt#gurguliare#linguisticparadox#actualmermaid#kareenvorbarra#psychopompious#athrabething

Celegorm & Aredhel cosplaying Orome & Nessa, inspired by this post
(Also the one and only time aredhel wore something colorful)
I also did a version with aredhels original colors on the dress bc i think it turned out well-
#silm#silmarillion#celegorm#aredhel#orome#nessa#celegorm already had the tattoos; aredhel painted them on bc she isn't old enough to formally join the Hunt yet#can you see celegorms hair sticking out of his wig#the antlers are a headband btw#also aredhels ears are already pretty pointy so she didnt need to do anything but celegorm has flatter ears so hes wearing fake vala ears#celegorm borrowed tilions clothes for this#he could have asked Real Orome but orome's like twice as tall as him#aredhel on the other hand just happens to have a whole wardrobe full of various white easily dye-able dresses#the copper jewelry is borrowed from fingon#dont ask me where they got the wigs

meet again at the end of time
(aka: C&C finally get their own pet edain)
some background:
(for those not following the braywashed saga) the two guys in the middle are (real, entirely human) wrestlers Elton Prince & Kit Wilson of Pretty Deadly, introduced to the silm fandom by @kitwilsonsass, and known for their uncanny resemblance to C&C in both appearance and demeanor.
As Arda is Earth, the Dagorath has not yet happened, and PD are human people who exist, it is entirely canon compliant for them to join C&C in the dagorath. Hence, CCPD alliance.
design notes:
CC
Celegorm's tattoos represent a symbol of devotion to Orome/the Hunt by imitating Orome's vala markings. Given that bows aren't the best weapon for melee fights, his primary weapon here is based on a boar spear, because I imagine similar tactics would be helpful against some of Morgoth's larger creatures. He wears the Feanorian star once on his armband and once painted on his shield (not shown).
Curufin's helm is based off the Silm description of the red-plumed helms of the Host of Feanor. His armor features one Feanorian star and the Trees (telperion not shown), and his shield bears one other star. He wears a dwarven knife (not Angrist since beren broke it) on his belt.
PD
Based on braywashed's assortment of PD outfit posts, they seem to have a light/dark color scheme, reflected here in their armor colors. Their hairstyles are based on what seems like their irl/interview-hair (aka practical hairstyle, because as unnaturally elven as they are they sadly do not have magical hair) (x). Elto's pink arrow fletchings and Kitto's blue mesh cape refer to the pink/blue matching outfit (x), while Elto's bow/quiver harness and both of their shirt colors reference the harness outfit.
Their weapons follow the opposite color scheme as their armor for contrast purposes, and weapon types (double rapiers + bow, double daggers) are based on braywashed's post here.
Both of PD's armor designs draw influence from c. 15th century English armor, seeing as they are British people, and feature a unique half-breastplate evocative of the extremely cropped sleeve shirt things they normally wear when wrestling.
edit: uploaded the wrong version (no tattoos) at first oops
