There's so much I love about Kyle's flashback and the insight it gives on his character. We see him falling in love with fencing and looking up to his uncle and wanting so badly to be part of that world.

But with Jesse Coste for a cousin, not only does he always fall short, but it's more personal because of that relationship--he'll always be compared to Jesse by virtue of being related to him. And he's aware of it--he's heard it before and probably hears it pretty regularly even now. It would be easy to resent Jesse for always being better--for being the ideal Kyle's always being measured against.

But instead of calling Jesse names or being angry at this boy for approaching him to talk about Jesse, he answers honestly and proudly that Jesse's unbeatable--even before realizing that being related to Jesse labels him as cool too. He genuinely admires Jesse and is proud of him and to be his cousin.

And then we see too the way Kyle's identity gets wrapped up in Jesse. Kids are flocking to him excitedly calling him cool for being related to Jesse, and we all know very well how often Kyle talks about Jesse and being related to him from then on. It's clear that Kyle's feelings about Jesse are genuine, but he mentions it too much to be purely gushing--he mentions it because he's learned that people like him better for his relationship to Jesse. There's got to be some self-worth issues all tangled up in there, and I think we see the roots of it all here.

I’m…… I can’t do this. Bellhop aof offers day assistance and mhok just swoops right in and takes day’s arm like the good old days as tho nothing ever happened much less they broke up THREE YEARS AGO and haven’t spoken since???? ? ? I was hoping u guys were exaggerating at least a little when u said mhok goes back to flirting as soon as he sees day again but u were absolutely right. This is so ridiculous. Mhok still AFTER ALL THIS TIME and everything day put him thru has debilitating day brainrot I KNOW he is Simp Supreme but I was holding out SO MUCH HOPE that there was a LITTLE more to him than that……. Like his main character trait is Heart Full of Love which is wonderful but the way the show has laser focused that love on day to his personal detriment (unwilling if not unable to prioritize himself under any circumstances) and to the detriment of mhok as a character having any substance (spineless pushover who will forgive day’s egregious treatment faster than the speed of light literally as soon as he sees his face because DAY!!!!) GOD mhok was already (before this point) a compelling character despite being so poorly fleshed out and he CARRIED the show and their relationship like he’s gonna need physical therapy after all the heavy lifting he was doing these past 11 episodes, he was the catalyst for ALL of day’s growth. Without mhok day would still be rotting in his bedroom. Would it have killed them to cut some of the unnecessary mini arcs (eh hem AUGUST, the eye donation, his mom’s bullshit, the night forgiveness arc was definitely necessary but proooobably did not need to be dragged out quite that long) in order to give mhok SOMETHING!!!! Literally anything at all. It’s like the writers as well as day only cared about him as long as he served their purpose. They gave him ZERO purpose outside of day. The ONE SINGLE TIME he pushed thru and made anything about himself we all saw what happened. It’s like they punished him for trying to be his own person!!!! The writers seemingly don’t give a FUCK about mhok outside of his relation to day. That’s probably the worst part about this mess to me. Day’s regression/severe late stage mischaracterization sucked but at least he grew at all and had characterization to get wrong lmao. Mhok was a pawn and they used him and gave him NOTHING in exchange for his crucial role in the progression of the story. ~Ohhhhh, a job abroad that he literally didn’t want~ that doesn’t COUNT!!! He gave and GAVE and everyone including the writers of the damn show did nothing but TAKE from him. Everything good he ever had. Mhok baby I am SO sorry they did u like that, you deserved so much better 😭😭😭😭
