HELLOO. i see you reblog a lot of hindi cinema!! i would love to watch more of it, what are your top 10 favorites?
🤩😍🤩😍🤩😍🤩😍🤩😍🤩😍🤩😍🤩😍🤩😍
this might be my favorite thing I've received in my inbox.
wh I well I wh how could I possibly refuse hee hee hee hee
limiting this to hindi cinema helps!! or so I thought, before I went through several rounds of intense interrogation and several scribbled pages of notes and realized this just outs me as a baby shah rukh khan stan, which I am. I resisted every impulse to try to make the list broad and varied and kept only repeating 'what are your FAVORITES, what are your FAVORITES' and even then narrowing everything down was really painful... I feel like I've watched very many but then not very many at all.
There are another half-dozen more I had to cut with great anguish (Paheli, Ram-Jaane, the Don films) OMG EDITED TO FINISH MY FRIGGIN SENTENCE: BUT I PRESENT TO YOU AND TO ALL: VI TSUPERTSUNDERE'S TOP TEN:
Mohabbatein ("Love Stories", dir Aditya Chopra, 2000)
A young men's college ruled by a headmaster who disdains love--can one music teacher help three love stories grow, and let love tower above all? ✫ My first hindi film. Still can't think of a better introduction. Truly has it all. My favorite ghost story also!! ✧ Standout number: the three ingenues have an incredible dance sequence - it's the emotional climax of the film for me.
Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai ("Say You Love Me", dir Rakesh Roshan, 2000)
When Rohit, an aspiring musician, meets Saxena, a rich bussinessman's daughter, his dreams of stardom glimmer right within his reach. Life has other plans. ✩ Hrithik Roshan's debut - and what a debut! My first introduction to a beloved facet of hindi cinema - double roles!! ✫ Standout number: The number that takes place in Cafe Indiana, Ek Pal Ka Jeena, accurately conveys how it felt like to go to a Rainforest Cafe when I was very young. Truly thrilling!
Muhjse Dosti Karoge! ("Will You Be My Friend!", dir Kunal Kohli, 2002)
Childhood friends Raj, Tina, and Pooja are caught in a classic love triangle - Pooja loves Raj, but he only has eyes for Tina. When he moves away, Pooja poses as Tina as they email back and forth and their friendship blossoms long-distance. A decision made in childhood brings problems to Pooja's doorstep - as they all graduate high school and become adults, Raj returns home... ✧ Rani Mukherjee and Kareena Kapoor are the real MVPs here - shining stars in every movie they're in. ✩ Standout Sequence: The medley, seen above, brought me to my fucking feet when we first watched it. The characters diagetically are singing these popular songs for each other at a wedding celebrations - each song's lyrics weave in and apply on multiple levels, depending on who knows what and what they mean, up to and including Hrithik Roshan reprising Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai! Genuinely one of my favorite sequences I've seen period on film, if I could ever put together anything half as layered I'd be patting myself on the back forever.
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... ("Through Smiles and Through Tears", dir Karan Johar, 2001)
The wealthy Raichand family splits in half when elder son Rahul falls in love with a lower-caste girl and marries her - younger son Rohit watches his beloved brother disappear to England and the light in his home wither away. When he becomes an adult, he's determined to find his brother and unite them all again. ✫ These three fuckers as a dad and two sons just make a fascinating family together, let alone the kind of heavy hitting talent you get from Jaya Bachchan (indeed married to Amitji) and of course Kajol my beloved Kajol most of all. 'It's All About Loving Your Parents' is a much much much... much harder sell than I'm prepared to give - at the very least, it's all the drama I can watch in. ✫ Standout Sequence: Bole Chudiyan above is so much fun, of course, but Say Shava Shava is also a really great 'here's how fun things are when things are GOOD' establishing song. When Amitji says 'EVERYBODY' he is not asking!!
Those four films are a truncated highlight reel of the 8 or so films I like watching around the holidays!! They work really well together and I associate them with each other a lot.
Darr ("Fear", dir Yash Chopra, 1993)
Kiran Awasthi has a freshly minted college degree, a bus ticket home, a beloved boyfriend in the Navy... and a stalker. A young woman is slowly driven mad by a ruthless specter who will stop at nothing to be by her side. As she and her boyfriend escalate... so does he. ✧ Truly breathtaking. A breakout role for SRK, another hit cementing Juhi Chawla my fucking beloved Juhi Chawla as the OG expression queen. My favorite horror film. Rahul Mehra deserves to be in Dead By Daylight so he can fight Leon in a twink off. Simply the bloodiest there is. My Halloween costume next year. ✩ Standout sequence: Any time Juhi Chawla is on screen and I'm not kidding.
Chaahat ("Desire", dir Mahesh Bhatt, 1996)
When the father of a father-and-son comedy duo gets sick, his son, Roop, would do anything to secure the money he needs to restore his father's health. So when he catches the eye of a wealthy club owner's sister, he can't say no, no matter how much her desire consumes... ✫ Diametric opposite of Darr, now Shah Rukh Khan is the target!! As a carnivore girl lover I can't not adore it. ✧ Standout sequence: Chaahat Na Hoti, pictured above. This was the frame that made me sit up and go 'oh I have to... I gotta watch this movie right now. Right now.' And I was so right.
Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani ("Yet, I Have the Heart of an Indian", dir Aziz Mirza, 2000)
Ajay Bakshi is a hotheaded, loudmouthed reporter - a rival media network hires his counterpart and superior, Ria Bannerjee, to try to take him down. ✫ A gag-a-minute comedy with more gumflaps than brains, just like our lead. Juhi is heaven in this. I can only describe this as 'I think this is what the guy from American Psycho THOUGHT was going on.' Was a flop - came out right after Kaho Na... Pyaar Hai and couldn't compete - but it hits the zany button like nothing else. ✧ Standout sequence: The inventiveness of the sets in pretty much every song is my favorite. CONTENT WARNING: There is an awful anti-Chinese gag sequence at about the middle of the film. The two leads pose as Chinese reporters to get into somewhere, and it's just wall to wall racial caricatures. I hit that ff button through it myself, a truly unpleasant marring in an otherwise goofy-ass romp.
Chak de! India ("Let's go! India", dir Shimit Amin, 2007)
Can a disgraced former field hockey star turn 16 proud, contentious players from all over the country into one unified team as their coach? Can each young woman play her all on the field - for herself and for her team? ✩ A sports anime fit into one film, I wish it were several seasons long. Each girl is spectacular and is a joy to watch!! ✫ Standout Sequence: The character work is where this one shines. Bindiya Naik is my personal favorite (and not just because the instant I saw her performance I went 'omg, she's playing my OC almost exactly. I'd cast her in a heartbeat!)
Fan (dir Maneesh Sharma, 2016)
Aryan Khanna is the King of Bollywood. Gaurav Chandna is almost him, but not quite - knows everything about him by heart, uses him as the light in his life, and Gaurav even looks just enough like him to boot. All Gaurav wants is five minutes of his time. Just five minutes... ✩ Eminem's 'Stan' as a feature length thriller that literally no one else could make. I can only quote this letterboxd review, because it's right: "even if there was another celebrity who could pull off tearing himself open to splash his own imposter syndrome onscreen, they wouldn't dare try...happy birthday to the only actor good enough to make his fans sympathize with his own stalker". I was SO upset to learn that this flopped. ✫ Standout Sequences: the practical and special effects used to differentiate SRK's two roles bar none some of the best I've experienced - uncanny valley is real here, and half of the horror is the ALMOST. but not quite.
✫✧✩✫✧✩✫✫✧✩✫✧✩✫
While I followed a loose, non-ranking order for the preceding nine entries, I had to save the only possible film for number one:
Om Shanti Om (dir Farah Khan, 2007)
"30 years ago," irrepressible junior artist Om Prakash Makhija has only one dream grander than making it big in the film industry - to get a chance to act alongside his greatest inspiration, superstar Shanti. His wish comes true, but, well... some dreams, one lifetime is not enough... ✫ THE BEST MOVIE THAT EXISTS. THE BEST MOVIE THAT DOESN'T EXISTS. Don't believe me? Let these ladies convince you - when I learned that somehow The Coolest And Most Sparkling theater troupe on the face of the planet staged a production of this I literally got so lightheaded I couldn't see for a second. This movie came out when I was thirteen - if I had seen it then I think it would have made a huge difference. As it was, I saw it at the second most perfect time: when I was/am also a 30 year old irrepressible junior goofball, just like Om. Farah Khan is one of my favorite directors for certain. A film about the hindi film industry, I place it last also because the more faces you recognize, songs you can pick out, movie references you can catch, the better - and it's incredible even still. ✧ Standout sequence: I can't say the whole movie (... minus Deewangi Deewangi it's the Yakuza 4 of this movie) can I??? Let me just say - long story short, Farah Khan got the idea for this film when Andrew Lloyd Weber had her to choreography for his stage show, Bollywood Dreams. She thought the plot, a poor junior artist becoming a big Bollywood star, was eye-rollingly unrealistic. She could do better, she thought... and that idea eventually became Om Shanti Om. The climax is her proving she could do Phantom of the Opera better than him, too!!
✫✧✩✫✧✩✫✫✧✩✫✧✩✫
And, if you'll indulge me... in thanks for giving me a really fun thing to do today, I have one more film: one that I think you would like, based off of the vibes of the journal entries I got to read!
Veer-Zaara (dir Yash Chopra, 2004)
An Indian pilot and the daughter of a Pakistani politician fall in love, but are wrenched apart when the pilot is imprisoned on false charges. He languishes 22 years in prison, never saying a word, until a young Pakistani lawyer is assigned his case and she is determined to see him freed... ✧ Certified Mom Movie and is an absolute banger. When I thought 'who would be a character who I could see Estelle looking forward to meeting for lunch', Rani Mukherjee's lawyer was right at the top of the list. ✫ Standout Sequence: My personal favorite, Main Yahaan Hoon, is the song linked above. It drives me Insane absolutely Insane - this depicts 'they're not in the room but they're the only thing on your mind' in a way seldom more effective!
✫✧✩✫✧✩✫✫✧✩✫✧✩✫
omg NOW I'm done for eel. This was a terrific exercise in tilling the soil in my brain - I'm really inspired by the all visual direction, the colors and depths, the sensibilities in general exemplified by the movies here, and hope to one day reflect it in my own work! I have to make the Yash Raj reshade shaders I want to see in the world.
Please don't hesitate to drop me a line about anything you find interesting here, other movies you've seen, or anything else! Genuinely truly always love getting to see your work. Thank you for reading!
#thank you again again again again SO so much so so much. I literally let myself have so much fun with this. I had a ball!!#oh my GOD it was so hard to pick good representative screenshots for each film. except oso chaaha and k3g - those shots have been in my min#since I first saw them#the rest are shots I'm just finding really evocative... and really inspiring!! I hope to help you see why they're my favorites.#paper star jar#postbox

A Bridgerton AU with SOME Om Shanti Om elements?
The Spouses get murdered in a fire by their evil relatives/foes (Cressida, Mary’s parents, Araminta, Rosamund, Simon’s father, Philip’s father, Lucy’s uncle, Gareth’s father). They set fire to Aubrey Hall and ensure they were all trapped but the Bridgertons all tried to save them. The spouses dying, the Bridgerton burnt but slightly breathing. Horrified, the villains buried the Bridgerton bodies alive.
The spouses bodies were found and it was depicted as accidental/or the villains made it seem it like they deliberately killed themselves in the fire. The Bridgertons Siblings were never found…
Twenty five years later, the spouses reincarnated and they start a romance with the look alike of their spouse from the other life. Each couple married and the spouses had the pleasure to befriend each other and they decided to collectively buy and rebuild Aubrey Hall. But Strange’s occurrences start to happen as they start gaining flashbacks, old Dowager Violet insisted that they were her beloved son and daughter in laws, finally they see the villains and memories came back.
Shenanigans and stuff, a bittersweet moment where the ghost of their dead loves saved them and smiled sadly at them as Simon, Kate, Sophie, Penelope, Phillip, Michael, Lucy, and Garett embraced their new loves (Bridgerton look alikes) tearfully looking over their shoulders as the Bridgerton Ghost bid farewell with tears in their faces before running into the light.
All they ever wanted was their spouses’ happiness and don’t worry… a piece of their soul resides within the look alikes.
You guys assume I watch a lot of Indian movies.... And it's true. So let me gush a little bit about 'Om Shanti Om' and how much I used to fangirl over Shah Rukh Khan when I was younger than I am now. ❤️❤️❤️SRK my honey 😙😙
But back to the Bridgerton au, yes I agree with everything you said here and we should definitely have a 'Om Shanti Om' au for the Bridgertons I would read the heck out of it and so would everyone else. Someone, anyone, please write this. 🥺🥺🥺

For your blupjeans game: free choice? An au based on a story you think is fun but you don't think you'll write!
There's a Shah Rukh Khan movie that came out several years ago called "Jab Harry Met Sejal" that I think would be an adorable Blupjeans AU.
Picture Lup as a world traveling tour guide. It's a great life for her. She has no roots, no ties, she drags tourists around during the day and at night she parties and flirts and does as she pleases. It's an easy, breezy, free floating sort of life.
She dumps off her newest group at the airport and is looking forward to a week off when one of the tourists (Barry, of course) comes rushing up to her insisting he needs her help. He lost something important at the bar they went to the night before and he can't leave without it. She does everything she can to blow him off but he won't be dissuaded and eventually all she can do is take him there and hope that will get rid of him.
They go to the bar which is of course closed this early and she gets them to let them come search. While he searches everywhere he was in this place, she basically is just bored and waiting for him to be done. But slowly it comes out, he lost the engagement ring that's been in his family for generations. He was supposed to do the big public proposal with it and he can't leave without it.
What follows is a zany trip across fantasy Europe to each and every place they'd been to on the two week tour, chasing one ridiculous lead after another.
And falling in love.
Barry had been all set to marry the daughter of the family his family has known for decades because it would make all their families happy and he's never found anyone else he cared about, she's nice, so why not. (He doesn't love her is why not. She doesn't love him either. It's convenient, is all.)
Meanwhile Lup, for all she seems to enjoy her life, every time Barry seems to have any real interest in her, she points out that she's the one guys fall for but not the one guys stay with. They might want to have a fling with the cute tour guide, but no one ever wanted to settle down with her or bring her home to meet the parents.
Barry, of course, thinks she's trying to keep him at a distance because he's just not good enough for her. Especially since they just! keep! running! into! her! flings! and they are all young and handsome and fun.
They keep going and searching and not finding the ring and falling more in love but also more certain the other could never really feel the same.
And then they run into her brother Taako. He's getting married and he wants her to stick around, meet his fiance, come to the wedding. Please, she's rarely around, just a few texts a week, maybe a phone call. He'd really like her to be there.
Barry insists no only on them staying but on throwing him a party to celebrate. Lup sees how much it means to her brother and throws herself into it. Once she meets Kravitz and sees how crazy the two are for one another, she's even more committed to giving him the perfect party and wedding. And there's Barry, acting as co-host of the party and helping make sure it's the perfect, magical night.
When everyone leaves, it's just the two of them and the happy couple. Taako wants to know what's up between them. Lup shrugs it off. "It doesn't matter. He's a tourist and this is a holiday. In the end, everyone goes home."
And Barry, who'd been so happy and light and, for the first time in his life, completely at home in this group of strangers, feels that push again, of her shoving him away.
Taako and Kravitz leave and they are alone. "Where do we go next to find the ring?" she asks him.
He's distracted by her words earlier and slow to answer so she answers for him. "I think you go home now. It's time you go back to your real life."
So he faces her and says, "I don't want to. I don't want to go back. I've been a different person, a happier person, I-"
"So now you're going to be the guy who dumps his girlfriend, his fiance? And runs off with the tour guide? Come on, that's not who you want to be."
"What do you want, Lup?"
"It doesn't matter what I want."
"Of course it does."
And she's silent for far too long. "I want you to go back to your life."
So he does. He leaves an envelope for her and when she opens it she finds the ring and a short note. 'I found it a few days ago, caught in my jeans pocket. But you're the only one I wanted to give it to so I'm leaving it with you.'
Of course, she goes after him, tries to find him but he's gone. So she goes back to her life, being a tour guide, and okay, at least spending more time around Taako. And after a few months of her moping around and coasting through her days, Taako tells her to move on and forget about the guy. He's gone, probably married by now, get over it.
But she doesn't want to, she tells him.
"Then why didn't you tell him that?"
"Would it have mattered?"
"I don't know, that's not up to me! It's up to him! But you never said anything!"
So of course, she decides she WILL go tell him. At his wedding, which had of course come up in their weeks together, the whole big double family shindig at the biggest hotel in his city and the looming date of the thing. So she shows up, ready to crash the wedding and make her declaration.
But he's not part of the happy couple at the alter. The wedding was cancelled and some other couple got the venue.
Of course he outside when she leaves and they finally talk and kiss and live happily ever after because they're Blupjeans and I say they always always always do.
#blupjeans#barry and lup#taz balance#barry bluejeans#lup#what if blupjeans were... free space (jab harry met sejal)#asks#answered#thanks!#there's this whole sort of 'magical bluejeans' element to it too that i didn't go into#like the bluejeans were saving him from the wrong marriage#and lots and lots of cute flirting#from both sides#teasing the other#i promise it's more fun than i made it sound!

The Boring Lives of Bollywood Wives
Before I ever heard of TechCrunch, The New York Times, The Atlantic or anything else that I read now, I read Bombay Times every day. Bombay Times is a tabloid that comes with The Times of India and covers Movies, Nightlife and Celebrities in Bombay. I started reading it far too young and continue to read it daily every time I’m home. Page 3 in particular is a recap of last night’s nightlife, parties and gossip. I grew up reading it, and found it inexplicably fascinating.
When the trailer for The Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives came out - I knew instantly that 1) it would be terrible and 2) I would love it. As a Karan Johar/Dharma Productions show, it was sure to be everything I loved and despised. The signature — great outfits, the elitist perspective, the classist commentary, the star studded parties, KJo’s Koffee with Karan style appearance, everyones incredible accents and terrible Hindi.
I watched the show in basically one sitting, with my family who really didn’t enjoy it at all but I loved it. I love Bollywood and bad television, so this was my heaven. But the show is really much worse than I expected. There are a few incredible moments — Bhavana talking about her spiritual skincare treatment, Seema talking about her DMing the Kardashians, Maheep saying LE BALL and Neelam’s moments in Qatar with her old movies.
The Doha trip, which is definitely an ad by the Qatar tourism board, was so reminiscent of Sex and the City 2 (the movie) and their trip to Abu Dhabi, in that it was also terrible, wildly inappropriate and definitely sponsored content. Nevertheless, I enjoyed watching these women prance around Doha followed by their manufactured stalker storyline, as I had my post thanksgiving food hangover.
There’s something uniquely entertaining to me about watching these Bollywood parents in full swing, many of them current and former stars, themselves, all of them parents to budding actors. They show all of the aunty and uncle qualities we love to hate, but they’re also rich and have these confusing accents. Though the show is centered around the wives, I found the husbands far more entertaining. Chunky Pandey and Sanjay Kapoor are full of dad jokes, a good look for them imo.
My favorite moment of the show is the Gauri and Shah Rukh Party, not just because I’m a lifelong Shah Rukh fan. It’s funny to watch these somewhat famous people interact with people much more famous than them, even though they’ve all known each other forever. Gauri and SRK are Bollywood Royalty, though they didn’t come from it, and there’s something very amusing about watching the rest of these 2nd, 3rd, 4th generation Bollywood stars fawn over them.
As I expected, the reviews of the show are meh. All of the ingredients are there, but the show just doesn’t land. And yet — I enjoyed watching it so much that I put it on the background for a rewatch while I wrote this. There’s something about the Bombay accents, watching Bollywood families sit around and do nothing, that I find extremely enjoyable even if not over the top dramatic. Besides, I’m fortunate to be stuck at home all day. What else is there to do right now anyway?
The show is not good, by any definition of the word, and yet it’s perfect. Nothing really happens, it’s a bunch of almost famous people wearing expensive clothes, on holidays and at flashy parties. But I just love it anyway because it’s exactly like reading Bombay Times Page 3.

My top ten Hindi films on Netflix
If you’ve never seen a Hindi film, you’re missing out. Action, romance, comedy, and drama: you can often find them ALL in one of these three-hour films. (OK, not all Hindi films are three hours, but they tend to skew longer than American films, especially the older ones.) If the constant genre-changing doesn’t hold your attention, maybe the singing, dancing, bright costumes and incredible cinematography will. If you’re not sure where to start, check out my recommendations below. Most of these feature strong female characters or have a feminist bent. Here are a few Hindi words to listen for while you’ve got the subtitles on.
pyaar – love, dost – friend, dushman – enemy, zindagi – life
1.) Dangal (2016) – Feminist sports movie, based on a true story. Lead actor and producer Aamir Khan plays Mahavir Phogat, the father of Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari, two girls from a small town in Haryana who aspire to become professional wrestlers, though the state lacks both structural and social support for female athletes. Their father was a professional wrestler who dreamed of winning Olympic gold for India, and failing that, aspired to have a son that could fulfill his ambitions. But he didn’t have a son. He had one daughter, and then another, and then another, and then another. One day, after the girls get in trouble for beating up some boys in the neighborhood that were bullying them, Dad realizes he may not need a son to have Olympic gold winners in the family. Aamir got most of the praise when this film came out, but all the actresses who played his daughters (Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sanya Malhotra, Zaira Wasim, and Suhani Bhatnagar) trained super hard for this film, and it shows 100% on screen. Best song: Dangal.
2.) Queen (2014) – Feminist coming-of-age travel film. This film is about a small-town girl that gets dumped on the eve of her wedding and decides to take her honeymoon to Europe alone, even though she’s never been out of India. Along the way, she makes friends with a diverse group of other travelers, sheds some of her more conservative views, and learns to embrace life fearlessly. Best song: Hungama. Second best song: London Thumakda.
3.) PK (2014) – This film was controversial when it came out because it pokes fun at religion, but it’s ultimately about we shouldn’t allow religious differences to divide us. Aamir Khan plays an alien that pays Earth a visit to try and understand human society. Unfortunately for him, there are a lot of rules he has to learn to pass as one of us (even though he looks human). Fortunately for us, that learning process includes a number of hilarious mishaps. Best song: Tharki Chokro.
4.) Dil Dhadkne Do (2015) – Family drama (but not without comedy, action, and romance) starring Priyanka Chopra (who you may recognize from Quantico or Baywatch). The parents in a family of business moguls decide to celebrate their anniversary by taking a ten-day cruise with some of their best frenemies. What could possibly go wrong? Best song: Girls Like to Swing. Second best song: Gallan Goodiyaan.
5.) 2 States (2014) – One of my favorite romantic Hindi films, this rom-com becomes a family drama when college sweethearts Krish and Ananya have to convince their parents to accept their partners. Krish is Punjabi (North Indian) and Ananya is Tamil (South Indian) and their cultures are very different. Will the parents be able to overcome their prejudices around class, color, and culture to accept their children’s partners? Best song: Iski Uski. Second best song: Locha E Ulfat.
6.) Little Things (2016) – This is a series, not a TV show, but I wanted to include it because I love it so much. It’s a super cute portrayal of a relationship between affluent twenty-somethings living in Mumbai. She’s very career-driven and he’s a little less clear on what his goals are, which contributes to some of the relationship conflicts in season one.
7.) Raees – This is a pretty straightforward gangster movie. A boy with strong values but few career options starts making money the best way he knows how: bootlegging liquor in a dry state. He eventually gets rich and powerful enough to scare even cops and politicians, but ultimately gets in over his head. Raju Ban Gaya podcast described this as a rip-off of Narcos, but I feel that’s a little unfair. They also praised the film’s portrayal of a Muslim protagonist. This movie features a fight scene in a butcher’s market, which, if you’re vegetarian like me, you may find a little hard to stomach. Also, some people get murdered. Best song: Laila Main Laila.
8.) Kahaani (2017) – The feminist thriller/murder mystery you didn’t know you needed. Vidya is living in London and very pregnant when her husband, who has traveled to Kolkata for work, goes missing. She travels to India to find him, but the local authorities, who assume he bounced because he couldn’t handle the prospect of fatherhood, are no help. Anyone that tries to help her mysteriously turns up dead. Can she find the killer before he finds her?
9.) Om Shanti Om (2007) – I included this because it’s a classic, and it’s got a lot of the wackiness I think Americans expect from Hindi films. It’s chockfull of references to other Hindi films, so the more you’ve seen, the more you can appreciate it. However, you don’t need to be a Bollywood buff to be able to enjoy this story about reincarnation and karmic comeuppance. It’s also a good introduction to Shah Rukh Khan, one of Hindi films’ leading men, and one of the world’s highest-paid actors. Best song: Deewangi Deewangi.
10.) Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga (2019) – This is the first mainstream Bollywood with a lesbian protagonist. (The independent Hindi film Fire portrayed a lesbian relationship in 1996 and it did not go so well.) Ek Ladki starts out as a rom-com and then becomes a family drama. The plot gets a little convoluted between the second and third act, but the chemistry between 90s heartthrobs Anil Kapoor and Juhi Chawla is a joy to watch. Fun fact: Anil, who plays the protagonists’ father in the film, is the father of lead actress Sonam Kapoor in real life.
These are all on Netflix right now. Not sure how many will be taken down next month.

mainly as regards to international terrorism
worldwide tensions between Islam and the West. Striking examples of this style encompass Kabir Khan's New York (2008), Karan Johar's My Name is Khan (2010), Rensil D'Silva's Kurbaan (2009) and Apoorva Lakhia's Mission Istanbul, to name a few. Films like Anil Sharma's Ab Tumhare Hawale Watam Sathiyo (2004) and Subhash Ghai's Black and White (2008) consciousness on terrorist problems in the Indian subcontinent itself. The latter films have continued inside the subculture of pre 9-11 terrorist movies like Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Mission Kashmir (2000), Mani Ratnam's Dil Se (1998) and Bombay (1995). Ratnam's Bombay treated the devastating Hindu and Moslem riots in 1991, which value over a one thousand lives. Study in Canada after Graduation Chopra's Mission Kashmir dealt with a situation of neighborhood terrorist activity inside the Kashmir location sponsored by global terrorist cells operating from Afghanistan. In this manner the terrorist style is not a wholly new style in Bollywood, nor is terrorism an strange phenomenon in the day to day sports of the Indian subcontinent (the maximum current and brutal terrorist assault was the Mumbai bloodbath in 2008). What makes the current spate of terrorist movies thrilling is that they have entered the global sphere and have emerge as component and parcel of a transnational talk between East and West and Islam and the opposite.
To make the terrorist style extra palatable, Bollywood has traditionally spiced up the violence and suspense with the hallmark Bollywood music and dance interludes and sentimental romantic exchanges among the hero and heroine. Mission Kashmir is infamous for its swish dances and stirring emotional exchanges between the primary protagonists, played out on the violent backdrop of terrorism in Kashmir. Mani Ratnam's Bombay likewise mixes up the maximum brutal scenes of Hindu and Moslem hatred and violence with scrumptious comedy and a forbidden love affair between a pious Moslem woman and a boy from a highly positioned Shaivite Hindu circle of relatives. His father is the trustee of the village temple and each the family patriarchs are violently opposed to the youngsters marrying out of doors their caste and non secular community.
Karan Johar's My Name is Khan
Following inside the Bollywood lifestyle of blending genres (known inside the enterprise because the masala or highly spiced recipe movie), Karan Johar's My Name is Khan blends comedy and romance with the political hot potato of post Sep 11 bigotry and racial hatred inside the US. The film's theme of ultra-nationalist extremism culminates in the senseless killing of a younger Indian boy Sam or Sameer, who's overwhelmed to dying with the aid of youths within the soccer ground, in part due to the adopting of his stepfather's name Khan. Overflowing gushes of emotion and coronary heart stirring romantic songs, inclusive of the integration of the 1960's counter tradition anthem "We Shall Overcome" (sung in both Hindi and English), arise at some point of the film to both lighten the tension and to exemplify the presence of light and hope in a global darkened with the aid of the bitter shadow of world terrorism. The truth that the imperative protagonist Rizvan Khan is a pious Moslem, and politically impartial to the hysteria of the debate, is considerable. Brought up by using his mom that there aren't any constant labels including Hindu and Moslem, however best good and bad human beings, Rizvan Khan freely practises his religion with identical love and admire for all other races and creeds, simplest differentiating among what is within the hearts and minds of humans, now not to what religion they profess, or to what race, culture and nationality they belong.
My Name is Khan is also considerable for Bollywood fanatics in that it reunites the most important heart throb couple of Hindi cinema from preceding decades, Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan. The duo was previously paired in of Karan Johar's in advance blockbusters Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1995) and Kabhi Kushi Kabhie Gham (2001). Both of these movies had been sentimental gushy romances, literally overflowing with juicy outpourings of emotion and feeling; a phenomenon which is termed rasa in India. The song and dance sequences were also very elaborately staged and blended a stability of the traditional Indian music and dance forms (Hindustani tune and traditional folk dances) in addition to contemporary Western forms. This ensured the movies' immense reputation in both India and diaspora countries like Canada, the USA and the UK.
Karan Johar continues to utilise the Bollywood masala formula in My Name is Khan, exploiting a sentimental and once in a while drawn out love affair between the autistic hero Rizvan Khan and his eventual Hindu spouse Mandira, a proprietor of a a hit hair dressing salon in San Francisco (the "town of love" which symbolizes the 1960s counter lifestyle motion exploited through Johar inside the "We Shall Overcome" sequence). In the preliminary scenes of the movie, America is portrayed because the land of freedom and opportunity, the nation wherein all races and religions are given the opportunity to move forward and gain prosperity and happiness in a way that is visible to be nearly not possible in a rustic like conventional India, buffeted as it's miles with caste and non secular prejudices and between half of and two thirds of its population living in poverty.
For overseas nationals or NRI's (non-resident Indians), however, Sept. 11 radically adjustments this formulation and shatters the American dream nurtured for decades by using an Indian diaspora which has merged its Indian cultural roots with American beliefs of person freedom and patron prosperity. According to Johar's film, this is now the plight of the Khans who, instead of persevering with to act as fully included contributors of the mainstream community, now find themselves at the outer edge of a post-9-11"us and them" rhetoric, fuelled through an ultra-nationalist Republican President, who perceives the sector in black and white realities, that have little to do with the ordinary lives of the average character. It isn't any accident that it's miles the newly elected President Barack Obama (played by means of his appearance alike Christopher B. Duncan) who greets Rizvan Khan on the quit of the film and applauds him for his faith in God and his humanity and perseverance. For Karan Johar, Obama's election is symbolic of the "us and them" divisions within the US psyche being delivered to a close in conjunction with the restoration of the innate beliefs for which the American Republic and its people stand.
Before the nation's divisions are healed, however, the Khan's revel in intense non-public hardships due to their ethnicity. These hardships culminate within the tragic death in their teenage son Sameer, overwhelmed to death in the school playing field by way of racist youths. In her grief, Sameer's mother Mandira blames her husband Rizvan, accusing him of the truth that if she and her son had not taken the call of Khan, he would now not be dead. She then tells him that the handiest way he can make amends for this stigma of being a Khan and, by means of implication a Moslem, is to fulfill the United States President (at the time it's miles George W. Bush) and to inform him that: "My Name is Khan and I am now not a Terrorist." This easy phrase turns into a form of mantra throughout the film, powerfully confronting the viewer's post-September 11 prejudices by way of refusing to link the two standards of Islam and terrorism together: i.E. My call is Khan, therefore I am a Moslem, however on the identical time just because I am a Moslem, does this mean that I am a terrorist? Unhappily, for the duration of the hysteria that followed inside the wake of September 11 for many Westerners the two terms, Moslem and terrorist became quite plenty synonymous.
This is a movie consequently which, in contrast to its predecessors, isn't always simplest aimed at teaching Indians and West Asians (it broke all data in Pakistan), however is also geared toward teaching and enlightening Westerners. This it does in a completely diffused and didactic way, no longer simplest thru its exploitation of acquainted West Asian icons, however additionally thru its exploration of issues and photographs established to the USA and the West: the 1960s counter way of life, the plight of the coloured people in the South and references to the civil rights movement through the film's subject matter tune "We Shall Overcome." This well-known anti-establishment song from Sixties when sung in Hindi via a religious Moslem in a black gospel church offers the target audience an nearly surreal feeling of each merging and, at the equal time transcending, national, racial and socio-spiritual cultural borders: a direction to global brotherhood and solidarity which has been courageously expounded via of the 20th century's brilliant non secular leaders, India's Mahatma Gandhi and America's Martin Luther King.
Karan Johar therefore attracts upon both the Western ideals of liberty and individualism, as well as propounding the roots of West Asian non secular piety and communal solidarity. By doing this My Name is Khan proposes an alternate version of worldwide brotherhood and transnational identities and exchanges. This new worldwide model for Johar is one that attracts its notion and ideals from the grass roots level- from the terrible coloureds of Georgia, from the socially ostracised Moslems, and from the autistic and mentally handicapped. All of them are an integral a part of this international humanity and in the end the parent of Shah Rukh Khan, the most important megastar in the worldwide forum today (such as Hollywood), speaks for all of them, when he says my call is Khan and I am not a terrorist, now not an outcaste and now not a hazard to the US or the crucial values which it seeks to export to the relaxation of the sector. Rather, as pious Moslems, those like Rizvan Khan have some thing of value to contribute to america and the West, and while the ones in strength allow them to do so, the vital values which have made the US excellent can no longer most effective be maintained however extended and broadened. On the other hand, ultranationalist extremist practises will handiest create increasingly hatred and division, in order that even the ones who have assimilated the American Dream will grow to come to be its maximum sworn enemies. This is the main topic of Kabir Khan's New York, which I will briefly discuss in part of this article.
Kabir Khan's New York
Although now not as a hit on the box workplace as Karan Johar's blockbuster, Kabir Khan's New York is possibly an even more exciting example of the transnational trend in the Bollywood terrorist genre. Released in 2008, New York makes a speciality of the lives of three brand new young Indians analyzing at New York State University together. The usual Bollywood masala romance dominates the first 1/2 of the movie, specializing in a sentimental love triangle between Maya (Katrina Kaif), Sameer or Sam (John Abrahams) and Omar (Neil Mukesh). Both Katrina Kaif and John Abrahams, in addition to Irrfan Khan (gambling the FBi agent Roshan) are properly installed stars in Bollywood (Irrfan Khan also starred as the policeman who interrogates the primary protagonist in Slumdog Millionaire). And the presence of these stars, along with the solid musical score and the dramatic love triangle situation, assured the film's success despite its debatable subject. Significantly, Sam and Maya fall in love and shatter Omar's emotional world at around the same time as the two hijacked passenger planes are driven into the Twin Towers. As with My Name is Khan, real pictures of the terrorist attack at the World Trade Centre is utilised in the film.
From this factor onwards, a film which has been mainly concentrated upon a sentimental love conflict between three friends now becomes a political indictment of the Bush administration's post-9/11 terrorist policies. Sam, as part of the FBI's nationwide hunt for terror suspects, is arrested, incarcerated and tortured. These tortures are graphically depicted within the film and are apparently primarily based on actual life debts of harmless victims, who have been illegally arrested and incarcerated for no other purpose than their having the wrong ethnic historical past and spiritual persuasion. During the final credits a grim word to this impact informs the visitors of the records that: "In the days following 9-11 greater than 1200 guys of overseas origin within the US had been illegally abducted, detained and tortured for as lengthy as three years. The government did not discover proof linking a unmarried one among them to the 11th of September assault.

2. Yeh Jawaani Hai Dewaani (Hindi)I’m a desi and proud, so let’s go this way too. It’s so fun and bold and honestly such a change of pace from other Hindi movies. I’d die for Deepika Padukone and Kalki Koechlin
3. 2 Weeks NoticeI don’t think anyone really realised the sudden influx of Hugh Grant content on my account, but people who know me know i’m an absolute slut for his wit and charm. This is one of his funniest, without a doubt.
4. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (Hindi)I’m not sure whether this goes under romance or comedy, but it’s one of my favourites anyway. Beautiful locations, their chemistry is amazing and great sub plots.
5. To All The Boys I’ve Loved BeforeLara Jean and Peter Kavinsky. I have feelings for both of them.
6. The Set-UpI honestly didn’t know what to expect while watching this, but it was so funny and I really loved it.
7. 3 Idiots (Hindi)Such an important movie for parents of kids studying in India and other countries where education is the utmost priority.
8. Bangalore Days (Malayalam)It’s probably not the best movie to exist, but it’s very close to my heart.
Fantasy:
1. Harry PotterYou can’t go wrong with an ultimate Harry Potter marathon. Even though the books are leagues above the movies, I still adore them for doing the best they can.
2. Pirates of the CaribbeanHilarious, smart, Elizabeth Swan. Need I say more?
3. The MCUAlthough watching all of them is highly recommended, some of my favourites include Iron Man 3, the Avengers, Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, Civil War and Thor Ragnarok.
Thriller:
1. Searching (2018)One of the best damn movies out there. It’s filmed entirely through different forms of technology, no real life acting and it pulls it off so well.
2. Drishyam (Malayalam)My native place is Kerala, and they produced this actual beauty of a thriller movie. It may not be the best you’ve seen, but I loved it.
3. The Da Vinci Code It mind fucked me.
4. Inferno It’s one of the movies that followed the Da Vinci Code and it made me actually want to get into Dante and art, but it unfortunately didn’t happen. Still a good movie.
5. Hush Okayyyy, I don’t think I ever screeched so hard while watching a serial killer movie. It screwed with me horribly but it was a great idea and they pulled it off well!

3. CocoBeautiful animation. Amazing plot twists. Absolutely gorgeous.
4. Inside OutClosest I’ve come to actually crying in a theatre was when I watched this masterpiece.
Coming of Age/Self Realization:
1. Perks of Being a WallflowerIt dealt with trauma and depression the way it needed to be dealt with and really showed the ugly side of it.
2. The DUFFOne of the lighter movies on the list, but hilarious all the same :)
3. Dear Zindagi (Hindi)Honestly one of the last few good movies to come out of Shah Rukh Khan now. So, so honest and refreshing about mental health in India.
4. Queen (Hindi)This inspired my mother to go to Paris where we promptly got pickpocketed and spent the next few days on a budget. It’s an amazing movie, and Kangana Raunat killed it.
Biopics:
1. Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (Hindi)This part is probably biased because I haven’t watched a lot of biopics outside of Indian ones, but Bhaag Milkha Bhaag was a knock-out. Farhan Akhtar deserves everything. One of India’s finest athletes, and the journey he followed to get to the top.
2. Neerja (Hindi)Goodness, there wasn’t a dry eye in the theatre by the time it was done. She was an air hostess working in the Pan Am flight that got hijacked years ago.

It seems almost impossible that an on-screen pair can weave the same magic like they did 20 years ago. But Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit-Nene have actually managed to pull that off with ease. The duo, who is seen on TV shows these days promoting their new film 'Total Dhamaal', have made viewers sit up and gape at their striking chemistry, even as they sway to 'Dhak Dhak Karne Laga' and their other hit songs from the 90s. In a fun chat with Bombay Times, the two talk about reuniting on the big screen after almost two decades, how they have maintained their friendship over the years and what’s common between them. Excerpts...
Anil, was it total dhamaal working with Madhuri after 18 years?
Anil: Actually, it’s a little more than that; I think we last faced the camera together 19 years ago. Yes, it was total dhamaal with Indra Kumar (director) being there and the three of us coming together after 'Beta'. It was a lot of fun with the entire star cast. Madhuri has worked before with most of the actors, be it Ajay (Devgn), Arshad (Warsi) or Jaaved (Jaaferi). The whole vibe was very good. It didn’t feel like we were shooting after such a long gap. Also, Madhuri and I have kept in touch over the years.
Madhuri: I remember he had come to Denver. He visited me when my kids were small. We had so much fun shopping...
Anil: Your husband (Dr Sriram Nene) bought me a pair of boots.
Madhuri: Yes, Denver is known for boots — the cowboy kind of boots.
Madhuri, when you learnt that Anil is paired with you in this film, did that make you more comfortable and sure about taking on this project?
Madhuri: Absolutely! When Induji (Indra Kumar) came to me with the script, I loved it. I asked him who would play my husband and he said he would be approaching Anilji. I said it would be great to have all of us in this kind of a mileu.
Anil: I will let out a secret today. Before we signed on the dotted line, Madhuri and I were in touch over this and we kept asking each other, ‘What do you think about this? It’s sounding great’. And then, we both decided that we should do it. Yes, Madhuri and I are coming together after a long time, but this is an ensemble film, where there are 12 people and all have equal roles. That’s the beauty of this film.
Madhuri: We also felt that it would be perfect if the two of us did this film. It would not make sense for anybody else to pair with either of us.
According to you, what’s the one thing that hasn’t changed about the other?
Anil: The most important thing is, she is humane. She has been the same since the time I first met her. From within, she has not changed as a person at all. She looks so beautiful because from the inside, she is calm, happy and relaxed. Her smile has not changed at all, likewise, her dancing remains unchanged after all these years. When I see her dance, I feel the same magic. The only thing that is different now is that she has two beautiful children and a great husband.
Madhuri: I don’t think Anil has changed either. Of course, with everything that’s happening on social media, he has turned quite savvy. I was surprised because he is usually reticent, but now, he is out there and ready to experiment on that level. Otherwise, I can see he has the same drive to work hard and succeed. He has the same energy and manages to get everyone going. We were on a TV show sometime back, where he just took the reins in his hands and said, ‘Come on everyone, let’s make this more enjoyable’. With Anil, what you see is what you get. There are never any layers; he is honest and straightforward. What he says is what he means, always. What he said about me just now is exactly what I would say about him. It’s all about keeping the child within you alive. I feel the same as I did years ago. I can’t believe I have kids who are that big. I look at them and say, ‘Really?’
Anil: God has been kind. When you look at your journey in terms of your personal or professional life, you know that you are blessed. These things make a lot of difference because kabhi kabhi journey mein utaar-chadhaav zyaada ho jate hain and that can take a toll on a person. What’s common between the two of us, I think, is that we have always had our priorities right. Sometimes, you have to make a sacrifice in your professional life if you feel that priority has to be given to your personal life. I would do that. She is also like that. The way she got married, decided to move to the US, it’s remarkable. Around that time, she did 'Pukar' (2000), which was appreciated, then 'Devdas' (2002) — one of the biggest hits. It’s not easy leaving behind all the glamour and the hustle-bustle.
What was it like when you visited her in Denver?
Anil: It was not just a house, it was a home. It was quiet, peaceful and pure. They were leading a beautiful life away from everything. To be honest, I could do it for a week or 10 or 20 days maximum. After that mujhe lagega ki ab Mumbai ka crowd chahiye.
Madhuri: But I was very happy and loved it. I enjoyed that phase of my life.
Anil, when you first heard that Madhuri was getting married and shifting base, how did you react?
Anil: It didn’t come as a surprise to me because it was just a matter of time. I think that she tied the knot at the right time .
Madhuri: I remember when I met him (Dr Nene), I felt, ‘This is it’. Anil and I were promoting Pukar in those days.
Anil: And most questions asked to both of us were about her marriage. Maine kaha thoda Pukar ki bhi baat kar lo yaar.
Madhuri: Yeah, I remember that!
Both of you have acted in 17 films together. What was the rapport like?
Anil: There was mutual respect for each other. At least I respected her. Did you, Madhuri?
Madhuri: (Laughs!) Of course. That was mutual.
Anil: I got along with her parents and had been to their home many times. We have had meals together and also, I specifically remember the poha I had at her place. Madhuri and her family would also visit my home. There was a certain connect between all of us. Ghar mein aana jaana tha.
Madhuri: It’s a friendship that lasted even after I left from here.
Anil: Talking about 17 films, I remember while we were doing those films, we were very competitive as well.
Madhuri: Koi bhi scene mein koi bhi shot chodne ka nahi! I would be like Anilji ne mere se accha kiya, now I have to do this better than him.
Anil: All the directors were in love with her, so I had to put in double the effort. I would try to charm my directors, but that wouldn’t work. They would take more time to light up her close-ups.
Madhuri: That’s the case with any heroine...
Anil: Aapka kucch zyaada tha! On a serious note, Madhuri really helped me with my dancing.
Madhuri: He is being very modest; he has his own style of dancing.
Anil: My dance is very Chembur...
Madhuri: Yes, that charming Chembur flavour (laughs!)
Anil: For me, dance is all about having fun and going with the feel of the music. I would go with the rhythm rather than focus on the choreography.
Madhuri: Some of the dances were sensuous. But the innocence with which Anil did it gave the whole sequence a beautiful effect.
Unlike all those films, which were about love and romance, Total Dhamaal is an out-and-out comedy where both of you play a couple that’s constantly fighting. What kind of prep went into this?
Madhuri: I had to be myself, get my absurdity right. The scenes here are very different because nobody talks like that and you have to make it look convincing. I love these kind of comedies.
Anil: In these kind of films, you have to be spontaneous and instinctive because it’s all about timing. For the first time, I am playing a Gujarati character. So, my prep was to get the dialect right, match up to Madhuri and look as fresh as her.
Madhuri: He would tell me, ‘I’m going to be there in the next schedule, you better come prepared’.
Anil: We play a couple, who has a 14-year-old child. In real life, I have a daughter (Sonam K Ahuja) who is 33. So, I had to work out everyday for this film. The idea was to look convincing.
Madhuri: Luckily, I have a son who’s 13. But I agree that the physicality has to look right.
Anil: Otherwise, people can make fun of you. Trailer mein logon ko pata chal jaata hai.
After this outing, are the two of you looking forward to doing more films together?
Anil: We are both available, writers and directors please make a note. We can come as a package deal!
Madhuri: Two for the price of one...
Anil: No, no aisa nahin hoga and I’m sure you won’t agree, too. Jokes apart, we would love to work together. It’s up to the filmmakers. We would be more than happy even if they are first-time directors, who have something interesting for us.
Madhuri: Yes, anyone who can present us differently.
Is there any film of another on-screen couple that you think the two of you would have done really well?
Anil: All of them!
Madhuri: (Laughs!) I have never really thought of it like that. When I watch a movie, I just watch it like an audience.
Anil: Actually, there are films that Madhuri has done with Salman, Aamir and Shah Rukh, where I think that they were the best choice. Whether it’s 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun' (1994), 'Dil' (1990) or 'Dil To Pagal Hai' (1997); they are irreplaceable. They look so convincing. I can’t imagine myself there.
Madhuri, according to you, which are Anil’s best performances?
Madhuri: There are many. I loved his performances in '1942: A Love Story' (1994), 'Kishen Kanhaiya' (1990) and 'Eeshwar' (1989). Even 'Woh Saat Din' (1983), I couldn’t believe that an actor could perform like that in his first film. Among our films, I would say 'Beta' (1992) and 'Pukar'.
Anil, which ones would you choose from her repertoire?
Anil: She was brilliant in Pukar. There are many, but I was mesmerised by her performance in Hum Aapke Hain Koun as well. That, according to me, made her one of the finest leading ladies on celluloid. That film is for posterity and even after 100 years, you can pull out any close-up and it will be timeless.
Given that yours turned out to be one of the biggest hit pairings on screen in Bollywood, it’s interesting to note that your first film together actually didn’t take off....
Anil: We did one song for the film titled 'Bajrangi', but it didn’t take off. We then did 'Hifazat' (1987), which did average business, though one song, 'Batata Vada', became very popular.
Madhuri: N Chandra was editing the song from 'Bajrangi', and at that time he was also planning to make 'Tezaab' (1988). He saw me in the song and decided to cast me in 'Tezaab'. Sometimes, things happen for the best.
Anil says that this is the best phase of his life in terms of the way he feels and the work he is doing. How would you describe this phase of your life?
Madhuri: I have enjoyed every phase of my life. This is new and there are some good roles out there. I have my family, it’s wonderful to watch my kids growing up and I am enjoying time with my husband.
Is Dr Nene looking forward to watching 'Total Dhamaal'? Has he watched the funny trailer showing Anil and you fighting?
Madhuri: Yes and after watching the trailer, he said, ‘'Thank God, you are not like that in real life.’

Hmmmm..... Okay, well I’m always about comfy clothes if I have to go somewhere early like before 10am aka hoodies & sweats but otherwise I’ve always been really into men’s street styles? But I love trying out new things that I think would look good on me except I stay on the more conservative side and often wear more wintery/fall outfits than summer haha like I love turtlenecks so much that I wear them year-round. I really love clothes that are skin-tight and single-coloured but cover the body,,,, think of the mom from the Addam’s family. I love simple clothes that make you stand out and I tend to not dress super feminine on a regular basis.

So naturally, I’m just shaking her and telling her to come inside because this huge frog is gonna eat us but she keeps shaking me off and saying “one minute” (which is what she does irl all the time LOL) so I run inside and the frog that follows me inside ends up becoming a knight on a horse and is chasing me again but then I woke up afterwards.

I do! I believe that miracles do happen for people and even if it might just be a coincidence I believe that good things do happen whether it be from God or another otherworldly person (I guess this makes me sound crazy lol) but I think miracles are rare :)
How are you?
I’m somewhat overwhelmed at how busy I’ve been these past couple of months on the daily but using it as a way to overcome small things and focusing on the bigger picture that good things will come. So I guess i’m just really driven to finish things & get some free time rn? :( Otherwise, today was sunny and warm with a cool breeze which made me happy and work was great as well :)

6 Top Reasons why Bollywood movies suck
I love movies and if you ask me to, I can watch them all day and night. There are so many great movies from all countries but then there are some horrible ones too. Just as much as I love Bollywood there are so many things I cannot stand about it, from the dance numbers to the action. I hate to say this but most Bollywood movies make me want to pull my eyeballs out, not just because of the plot or the actors but because of some very disturbing things that are ethically wrong which people choose to ignore just for the sake of entertainment. To be completely fair, there are so many good things about Bollywood but because most people focus on the goods, the worst are forgotten.
Dance Number that involve sexism
What really got me thinking about Bollywood and everything they do wrong was the fact most of their songs are sexist and make no sense. Most of the songs that are played at weddings, parties, even birthday parties for kids portray women in a wrong way. Most party songs are those where women are have naked and dancing on a bar table in front of plenty of men. Not only is it vulgar but it is also not appropriate. Such songs objectify women. The worst bit of all is that kids are allowed to watch such movies that give the wrong idea of the society and encourage the objectification of women. These “dance numbers” are in no way appropriate for kids or anybody as a matter of fact. Take this music video as an example. Sheila Ki Jawani is one of the most popular songs and not only is it listened to by adults but also kids. Not only does the music video promote sexism, the lyrics make no sense.
Movies are not original
I know, I know not all movies are copied but there are still movies that are copied from Hollywood and Tollywood which shouldn’t be the case at all. Bollywood copied the idea or the plot of another movie and made it its own. It is just like a student copying answers from another student and not giving them any credit for a project. Bollywood has the potential to create something that is original. Many people were angry that India sent Gully Boy for the Oscars but what Gully boy had that other Bollywood movies didn’t was how different it was. It reflected on the society. They used something realistic because it happens in society and India and they used something that actually happens in our country to create something unique and unlike anything else. So if not anything else Gully Boy was very well put together and it had the originality that every Bollywood movie requires. Some examples of Bollywood copying other film industries are, When Harry Met Sally, Bollywood changed it to, When Harry Met Sejal. Kabir Singh was the exact same thing as Arjun Reddy. Godfather and Sarkar were similar. They copy many scenes from other film industries too.
Bollywood does not portray the real society or is in any way realistic
Just like fairy tales, Bollywood does not portray a realistic view of society. From the guy getting the girl to everyone breaking out in a song. When it’s a musical it is expected for people to start singing out of the blue but Bollywood movies are not musicals and to make things worse, just for a small music video they change the entire location of the shoot. Then obviously there are background dancers in the back. I understand they do it to make things a little more fun but for some of us it only makes things so much worse. You won’t believe how many times I have or seen my family skip the song and move ahead with the rest of the movie which brings me back to the item songs. Batla House was one of the good movies I watched because they had to put Saki Saki in the middle which disrupted the flow of the movie. When you’re sitting in a movie theatre and Salman Khan’s t-shirt just rips open do you ever just wonder why? Like what was the point? Because I do. Every single time an actor fights their T-shirt just rips open and they are shirtless in no time. That does not happen to anybody in real life, ever, period.

Talking about unrealistic stuff, let’s come to romance. There is not one thing right with the way Bollywood portrays romance movies. The guy always gets the girl or the girl always gets the guy. Bollywood considers stalking as romance. In real life if I would find someone following me I would call the police not be wowed by the guy not to mention the fact that in every Bollywood romance movie ever the guy meets a girl, he lies her and somehow she likes him back, they fall in love, something happens and they break-up but then again get back together. Don’t forget the happy ending. This never happens in real life. Never have I seen the characters just talk about love or life or any of the important things. I love Bollywood but I cannot stand one Bollywood romance movie because of how un-real everything is.
Unreal Action
Do I even need to speak about this one? It is so clear that all Bollywood action scenes are far from the truth. The heroes’ shirt being torn to the cars flying in the sky. Trust me when I saw this, it is not helping the movie in any way. One, like I’ve said many times before, a man’s T-shirt does not just rip open. Two, there is only one hero against 50 other sidekicks of the villain and somehow the hero comes out alive and in good shape to kill the villain. The hero can be hit by a car or a rod and they will still be conscious and perfectly fit to beat the living crap out of 20 people. A hero will jump off a 3-floor building and guess what, he is still fine.

Don’t forget the fact that all a guy needs to fly is one light punch. The hero barely even touched the villain’s face and somehow the villain goes flying on the other corner. Did I forget to mention flying cars? In every Rohit Shetty film, there has to be a car that will go flying around. Not one thing about the Bollywood fight scene seems real.
The actor’s who can’t act
I don’t want to insult anybody but there are so many actors in Bollywood that cannot act and somehow which is still a mystery to me, people seem to like them. Bollywood is also filled with Nepotism and most of the time actors who have never actually worked for the position are not great. Some of these actors that can act are given the wrong roles in the wrong movies. The reason why teenagers love Varun Dhawan is that he is best suited for funny roles and is mainly for the age group of 7- 12-year-olds. People like Shah Rukh Khan in romantic movies because that is the genre he is best at but sometimes roles are given to actors who can’t act in that specific genre. Take Katrina Kaif, for example, she is a mediocre actor but people loved her in Tiger Zinda Hai and didn’t like her in Bharat and that is because she is not meant for a romantic role. The problem with most Bollywood movies is that they choose the wrong actors or actors who can’t act at all. In my opinion, there are so many actors who have real talent. Rajkumar Roy, Ayushman Khuranna, and Navadezin Siddiqui are some great examples of underrated actors. Then there are some actors who are not very great at their work (in my opinion) like Salmaan Khan, Katrina Kaif and Sonakshi Sinha. The problem with some actors is that they are only casted because they are good-looking and not at all based on their actual acting skills. One thing that makes movies unrealistic is acting because the actors can’t act.
The unclear social message
Most movies that I have watched give a social message of some sort and there are so many Bollywood movies that just fail to prove a point. Take a very recent movie, ‘Angrezi Medium’. The message behind the movie was how kids treat their parents unfairly even though they can sacrifice everything for them. Though that point was made very clear other things may have misled the audience. To get to his daughter he illegally travels to another country and hides his true identity, though it is meant for entertainment purposes it does not give a good message to the audience. Another very famous movie that the whole world seemed to love was Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Once again, the guy traveled to another country illegally. There are so many other movies that make absolutely no sense or do not give a clear social message.

What Shah Rukh Khan once said about leaving movies for Gauri Khan: ‘I would go insane but for her’ - bollywood
https://liveindiatimes.com/what-shah-rukh-khan-once-said-about-leaving-movies-for-gauri-khan-i-would-go-insane-but-for-her-bollywood/
Shah Rukh Khan was the crazy lover boy in real life as well, much like many of his film roles in Bollywood. However, he was only ever crazy for his wife and interior decorator Gauri Khan.
In his biography titled King of Bollywood: Shah Rukh Khan and the Seductive World of Indian Cinema, author Anupama Chopra had revealed all about their love story. How their first date went by sipping colas by a swimming pool to how he would call her at her home under false female names. Shah Rukh even grew too possessive about it and she left him for it. From the way he got her to forgive him to how he won over her parents to let her marry him, the book reveals all.
Shah Rukh and Gauri at their wedding.
The couple got married in 1991 before his debut film Deewana had even released. Filmmaker F C Mehra wanted Shah Rukh to postpone his wedding until their film Chamatkar released, hoping to cash in on the way he could charm the ladies . Shah Rukh,, instead, said that he would quit the film.
He told Stardust in a 1992 article, “My wife comes first. And I can tell you this much that if ever I am asked to make a choice between my career and Gauri, I’ll leave films…I mean I would go insane but for her. She’s the only thing I have…I love her body. I am hooked to her.”
On Rendezvous With Simi Garewal in 1997, when Gauri was asked if Shah Rukh had always been protective about her, she said, “It was possessiveness. It has turned to protectiveness. He was disgustingly possessive, he was sick. He wouldn’t let me wear a white shirt because he thought that it was transparent. It was a kink in the mind, I think.”

Shah Rukh agreed that he was “downright vulgar” at the time. “I knew her but nobody knew that I knew her, so there was this whole feeling of lack of ownership. Whether it’s a man or a woman, I think both of them want to have it. So one just felt like…somehow to control, and I had become very cheap,” he had said.
Almost 28 years later, Shah Rukh and Gauri are the king and queen of the film industry. They are also parents to three perfect kids–sons Aryan and AbRam and daughter Suhana.

Family First: Kapoor girls Kareena Kapoor Khan and Karisma Kapoor pose with parents Babita and Randhir Kapoor
Kareena Kapoor Khan's little bundle of joy has turned 1 today and is celebrating with the whole family in Pataudi. Karisma Kapoor has been treating fans with pictures and videos from Taimur's birthday party happening in Pataudi Palace.
Earlier, she shared an adorable picture posing with the little munchkin and wished him Happy Birthday. Now, she shared yet another picture posing with sister Kareena, dad Randhir Kapoor and mom Babita.
She captioned the images as, ‘’We love our parents #familycomesfirst#pataudidiaries.’’

Recently, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Shah Rukh Khan got together for a chat show, where the actress talked about her little munchkin. She said, "My whole heart and mind is full of my son, and just pure love for my child. I never thought that I could have loved anyone more than my sister, my dad and my mom. But when I held Taimur in my arms for the first time, I don’t think I loved before that."
Earlier, when asked how she is planning to celebrate his birthday, Kareena had said, "Well, it’s going to be a family affair. It’s not going to be a big Bollywood party like how everyone sees it. It’s his first birthday and he should be with his family- his parents and his grandparents. It’s going to be a small intimate thing."
In an earlier interview, when Kareena was asked about the media's constant spotlight on Taimur, the actress stated, "I think times are changing and wherever we go, we get clicked, which is a part of our normal life. I want Taimur to grow as normal as possible, then why should he be treated any differently? His parents are normal, he will lead a normal life like all of us. So I am okay with the fact that media clicks his photographs; besides my Taimur is the most amazing looking child!"
