Firstly, since Jason does not actually get to the Palace, would he still contact Reyna? would they meet with her later than they do in canon? would she contact him instead, when she herself reaches that place?

Or is it a case of Zephyros giving them the info abt the scepter earlier, and they never go to Split at all? Unclear.

while I love valdangelo as much as any of us, Leo is even more of a stranger to Nico than Jason is in cannon. However, Leo has his own issues with Eros so what I think would happen, is that the god, affected by the double personality thing, wouldn't be able to settle on just one of them.

he'd be constantly having to change the script, and this is something that Leo and Nico could exploit.

this would also be entirely about the two finding a way to work together, but unlike the fix I mentioned previously, Leo and Nico are incredibly similar. So once they both reached the conclusion that they have to work together, they would do so far more easily.

actually, they'd make one hell of a team up and I'm getting mad that they never get to fight side by side properly. Fire and death sounds like the most obvious combo ever, come on!

And Leo, bc it would be Leo, breaks the silence by just starting to complain abt Eros, and his whole "confess your love issues" spiel, and Nico gets sort of annoyed and says something that gives a lot away, but only if you're also queer

like: "at least you could've said something normal", but like, worded more subtly

and Leo's all like, "no way, that guy totally wanted me to talk abt the Jay issue, which is totally uncool", bc Leo would come out like that to someone, that's who he is

I'm unsure if Nico would figure it out right then and there, or if it would take him until way later. probably the second though, the internalized homophobia is strong in that one.

once he does figure out, he would like confront Leo abt it, and it would become a whole thing I think. obvs if I were to write it I'd give that conversation a good resolution, but even a bad one would be progress vis-a-vis them coming to terms with their sexualities.

it could've given them reason to interact more, whether positively or not, though I honestly believe they would eventually work it out in the second case. and that eventual camaraderie could have then worked to get Nico closer to the others, probably starting with Jason, considering he was already trying to be his friend before the whole scepter thing.

we could've had Nico finally letting himself process the Percy issue, and Leo processing the Jason and Piper issue, while also both helping each other feel a lot less weird, and alone.

Probably Fraldarius was as devoted to Nemesis as Ingrid to Dimitri, Lamine very well may have been as sassy as Dorothea, perhaps Goneril was as brave and endearing as Caspar, or Maurice was as loyal to his clan's interests as Petra to Brigid's happiness (through a strong bond to the Empire) but like the BE, they are butchers, who relished in the destruction of everything those against them hold dear, lap dogs and rabid curs of someone they definitely know have crushed innocents and scorn the very idea of peace except under their domination.

The only meaningful difference between Edelgard-following BE and the elites is that we can know more about the BE and we are forced to dislike cutting them down even as they refuse to let northern Fódlan alone.

when I started shipping it: TOS The Man Trap had me 👀😏 with Jim playfully handing him a bouquet of straw and teasingly calling him Plum while fixated on McCoy's (adorable) reaction to him calling him his ex's pet name and just generally being a giddy kid with a crush. This was before I could even recognize McCoy and had assumed I wouldn't like him based on fanon. The gifset that got me was the "Something I seldom say to a... customer. Don't destroy the one named Jim." with the lost captain looking up at him like he's the only hope for a map.

my thoughts: i enjoy them! This is entirely based on tos since I haven't seen anything else. I think they're interesting with how outside the starfleet hierarchy bones is to jim but also how much captain kirk does embody that hierarchy. I love how much Jim does listen to him until he doesn't lol.

what makes me happy about them: every time bones gives him big goofy smiles 🥰 every time they apologize to each other 🥰 the fact that he's Jim's emotional support comfort blanket doctor that he has to take everywhere with him 🥰 the way they're so young together - playful , antics, and also allowed to feel their vulnerability 🥰 that one novel line about how in Kirk's ideal world there would be no one in sickbay and Bones' job would be to have fun on the bridge with him.

what makes me sad about them: the way I think Jim's number one love really is the ship itself and how fast he can and must and will shift to being The Captain. The City on the Edge of Forever desperate horrified clinging hug. When jim Pieta carries bones after bones throws himself in front of torture happy aliens for him. Everyone of their therapeutic drinking sessions. Bones and Spock conducting a vaudevillian argument to make him laugh.

things done in fanfic that annoy me: when it's clear Jim's the blorbo at the expense of Bones where the relationship just reads depressingly one-sided but not intentionally so (on the other hand I do love fics that are intentionally about a depressing relationship lmao). When bones is overly grumpy or shouty or uses shots and physicals as threats and has little depth to him/his whole story is about being divorced and scared to love. I think His Deal is way more than that.

things I look for in fanfic: I haven't read much fic of just the two of them, I checked my bookmarks and the Jim/bones fics I've bookmarked are mostly mcspirk or as a past or side relationship. I guess honestly. stuff that plays with their power dynamic and differing priorities is fun. Anything where they're capable of having a messy genuine conversation bc that's what they do nearly every episode of tos. Letting them both have friends and pasts and past relationships!! I get so claustrophobic with any ship that's isolated but these two esp are so much more in focus within the greater context I think because of how much they both are entwined with the people they're responsible for.

who I'd be comfortable with them ending up with if not each other: I'm not that picky honestly as long as it's not the whole Inevitable Destiny spirk thing. The concept that bones obviously could never be on that level of mystical soul mate to them is so 🙄. Nearly everyone on the Enterprise is insane about each other in some way tbh. I'm trying to think if there's anyone I would actively be grossed out by them ending up with but I've seen nearly everything done well. I guess I don't understand either of them ending up with Chekov. I also don't really know who Carol Marcus is and so far haven't read anything that has made her any clearer. I also just personally don't see scotty/bones.

when I started shipping it if I did: this is tricky bc i feel it laid dormant in me for a long time (basically since seeing that ai love love fanart of near asleep on mello in probably 2008) and there is evidence in my old AO3 history of me having read fic for them as far back as 2014 (???!!!) but i wouldn't say i sincerely shipped them until my late sept 2022 rewatch of DN which. when the photo exchange scene happened i turned to my brother and said “they're in love.” the rest is history ig 🫣 

my thoughts: MANY!!! ship of all time for me ngl 

What makes me happy about them: i really really enjoy the potential for immense tenderness with one another in the wake of lifelong one-sided resentment & competition. also their mutual obsession and horrific PDA charms me. 

What makes me sad about them: oughggghgghg. canon. & mello's inferiority complex / insane abandonment issues but like at the same time those are fun to write about so.

things done in fanfic that annoys me: to be honest i haven't really been reading meronia fic much over the last year except in cases where i know the author. this is just because of like. basic things like constraints on my time. and also bc overall there honestly aren't That many fics that get posted where i Don't know the author (<- chatty to a fault) off the top of my head, things i have seen At Some Point in fanfic that i don't care for:

1) near being infantilized,

2) near being a total pushover,

3) mello being an overly-aggressive asshole / being cruel for the sake of cruelty (this sort of dynamic just doesn't appeal to me for any ship, it's not my thing, but i particularly don't care for it in meronia)

4) near being overtly mean to mello (he is honestly STUNNINGLY kind to mello considering the circumstances in the photo exchange scene).

honestly a skilled author could probably pull off 3 or 4 with a deft and nuanced hand but it still wouldn't be my cup of tea. OH! one more.

5) i don't personally find it interesting or compelling if mello is in a straightforward position of substantial power over near / if everything just goes mello's way. it's too dissimilar to canon for the dynamic to resonate with me personally and gets rid of mello's underdog status entirely, which is kind of his whole thing. 

things I look for in fanfic: this one is tough because i do just mostly read stuff by people i know and by like. smallestbird. hgdhgshdghs if i was going to look for fanfic though, i think i would look for: nuanced dynamic, "no archive warnings apply" (just my personal tastes for meronia & my inability to do angst), and an interesting premise / summary (this is so so vague sorry but summary is the top determining factor in whether i click on something or not).

hi hello very cool tumblr user leafcabbage. i sent an ask a few days ago abt starting your fic i dont remember if i was on anon but if i was then thats me!

anyways bc i'm clinically insane i finished binge reading ycssgwtlfs this afternoon and haven't been able to stop thinking about it actually!! sometimes the it gets worse before it gets better trope isn't my cuppa but you definitely made it work so well if not for the SHEER amount of hurt no comfort liiiiikeeeee omg omg omg omg that series of chapters where ranboo was just slowly losing their grip was just so exhausting to read (shals pos so slash pos!! i mean that like it very deeply emotionally affected me!!) and i am so here for it because it made the comfort at the end so so worth it. very excited to continue w the next parts :D

i also loved the little moments scattered throughout. i want to see so much more of techno and wilbur's relationship because that is really fascinating to me. i could read a whole other fic about that actually they have a great dynamic also bc we saw both their biggest flaws come to the forefront when trying to help ranboo. its just interesting. and!!!!! woah?! whats up with big q and techno?!! intrigue moment!!!!

and even though dream was a piece of shit (btw you wrote the gaslighting SO WELL that is exactly what it feels like. i was genuinely nervous everytime i read his name because we don't know whether ranboo was gonna get manipulated until he started talking. i thought it was a great detail that dream's mood was always the first thing we learned in every scene's narration because ranboo had to walk on eggshells with him. GOOD SHIT!!!! GOOD SHIT!!!!!!!!!) i rlly hope he gets out of that clearly toxic family eventually. how dare you make me empathize with him >:[

and purpled my beloved...... idk i just liked his and ranboo's dynamic. it was cute and i really liked seeing him and punz at the end. he is in the bathroom a lot. hope the guy is doin okay. i took that uquiz you made bfore i started reading the fic and i got him, so i am just attached ig oopsies. also tubbo and tommy's roomie was such a good moment it was genuinely really wholesome and is like my new favorite long build up joke ever :D

(also ahhh sorry if its annoying that i'm sending this in ask form instead of just commenting, especially since its kinda long!!!!!! but my eyes hurt from staring at the ol screen, tumblr interface is just a lot less headachy lol, thanks for writing such a wonderful fic and i hope youre having an awesome day!)

ahh this made me so happy!!! dont worry about sending it in ask form, i love seeing the little blue dot that means i have an ask, its very exciting. this did genuinely jumpscare me (in a funny way), which sound so dumb but i open the ask box and saw a long ask and went "woah!!" and genuinely actually jumped. thought you might enjoy learning that.

long answer so

i really really work hard on making the hurt worth it for the comfort, and having enough time to have that comfort and recovery. i think it helps that im writing a full series so if something wasnt dealt with in ycssg, i have quite a few more fics to deal with it and create closure. but im glad it was worth it! and it got tiring for me writing those chapters to be honest, it draws out just a little long and that was on purpose. it doesnt end at the perfect time, like in an ideal world ranboo would have accepted help at thanksgiving and that would be the beginning of things getting better, but thats not how life works. ranboo did not willingly seek out help, and thats an important part of the story. they accepted help because they were convinced they were literally dying and didnt know what else to do. and then they were somewhat reliant on tommy and tubbo, and if that hadn't been the case things wouldn't have ended up where they were.

thank you with the relationship comment too! i really wanted to make it clear that everyone has a life outside of the bench trio too, so in my head they have semi fleshed out stories and lives. especially dream. theyre all real people (or as real as fake people can be) not just props

dream was such a complex character to write, and he continues to be, and i love writing him so fucking much. he's ranboo's antagonist but he isnt evil and inherently awful, he has his own life and his own problems (which doesnt make what he did to ranboo ok at all, but thats just to say that hes a person out side of it) and im glad the emotions in his scenes came through so clearly!

purpled has ibs thats canon and its because i have ibs and i thought it would be funny. love the guy, really. hes one of my favorite side characters. i love him and im glad you like him too he deserves to be liked. IM GLAD YOU LIKED THE ROOMIE i have this ongoing joke with myself that he was fridged but in like a moving out kind of way. he was uhauled. hes my favorite NPC <3
