#like - why would a human ever go 'let me morph a human real quick to do this thing that almost any human can do'?

Note
Just wondering...do you think David thought-spoke privately with Visser Three in #48 and told him the Andalite Bandits were human and that's why he starts looking in #49? Because that's my headcanon
Oh man, I do NOT know what to make of #48, but I do like this take. If David dropped V3 that hint, and if V3 saw mecha-Rachel as a distorted but still human-looking morpher, I could get behind this.
And you're right that Visser Three is the barrier to figuring out the andalite bandits are human. As early as #4 the kids overhear Temrash 114 and Iniss 226 debating: "is Visser Three wrong? What if they're not Andalites at all?"/ ... "Visser Three wrong? Maybe. But I'm not the fool who's going to try and tell him." Heck, as early as #1 the yeerks are looking for "some kids who were shooting off fireworks in the construction site", and presumably they don't mean andalite kids. So like, clearly some of the controllers are at least open to the possibility of human morphers. The only thing stopping a full-scale human morpher search is Visser Three a) having TWO of the galaxy's biggest andalite supremacists in his brain, and b) having absolute power over the Earth invasion.
So I've always headcanoned that some technician controllers start looking for irrefutable proof of human morphers as early as Elfangor's death, and that it just takes them ~2.5 years to come up with something ironclad. Ax's presence may have slowed the process — he's obviously an andalite and not just someone in morph as Elfangor — and Tobias's ability to stay "in morph" for 2+ hours and to go directly from being "in morph" to a different morph almost certainly muddied the waters. But yeah, maybe it's not that the technicians finally persuaded Visser Three; maybe Crayak engineered it that way.

eternal - jaemin x f reader
fluff, smut, vampire!jaemin, 2.2k
Tumblr media
he had yet to utter a word since his confession, and neither had you, though you had tried piecing together a worthy response. he simply watched you as you watched him, your eyes focusing on each delicate ridge in his skin, admiring his nonexistent pores; how the thin slithers of light that broke through the poorly drawn curtain, shone on a bend from the ends of his bangs down and around his chin. a kind reminder of what you swear you have always known, but regret to have never questioned.
“jaemin?”
“my love?”
“have you always been this beautiful?’
he had to admit he was taken back. those are the first words you have said in a long while. they are your first words since he told you three minutes and twenty-five seconds ago - he was counting, not actively, but over time his mind has created room for his thinking to expand, to surpass humanity’s understanding of thought, and most times he welcomes it. but not at times such as these - where he knows he told you three minutes and twenty-five seconds ago, and your first words are in awe of him.
“i told you i am undead.. and that is what troubles you?”
“your beauty is far from troubling,” you retort, eyes still inspecting his face. jaemin’s mind wanders back to when he once pitied humans. how they thought what they saw was really seeing. victims of an already limited life, the human eye is only able to pick up a fraction of their sublime reality. yet the way your eyes traverse each of his features, as if to commit them to memory, he surely found a compelling reason to admit their eyes were not so lacking. “was it the bite that made you so handsome?”
“i wasn’t bitten,” he corrects, as the pads of your thumbs sweep over his cold knuckles, your touch casting a reverence over the scene. he lets out a pretty laugh at your assumption, the soft crease between your brows forming as he destroys your fictional understanding of his kind. “humans have always had a skewed understanding of our lore.”
“so your mother and father were vampires?”
“no.” it has been some time since he has had to explain vampiric lore to a human, but his mind retains his memory of it all the same. “it is not dissimilar to what humans call possession? or a spell? it is a combination of the two.”
“did it hurt?”
jaemin cannot help but melt at the notes of concern lacing your tone. it is his turn to pass his thumb along your knuckles before flipping your hand over, letting his finger trace a swirl in your palm, offering a soft shake of his head. “it makes one feel queasy, a consequence of the change in dietary needs.”
your hand stiffens beneath his touch as your eyes drop to examine them. he fears he has spoken out of turn, pushed the astonishingly pleasant conversation down a dark hole. jaemin once believed humans to be predictable, but you continue to challenge that. “is that why my invites to have you for dinner always go unanswered?”
“i knew that wounded you, angel.”
“it did no such thing!” his chin drops, eyes boring into you in a successful attempt to lure the truth out of you. he immediately softens when you exhale, in defeat of his gaze or distaste at your transparency, he does not know. jaemin would soften all the same. “i will admit, i did make assumptions to make sense of your refusal.”
“did you think i preferred not to visit?” you had never noticed the flecks of red in the perimeter of his irises until now. they glowed slightly, as if enraged, though you know not with you. “there are rules we must follow when entering a new space, silly, unchangable rules.” his frown deepens when you nod, always understanding even when you shouldn’t. “i apologise if I hurt you, angel.”
“hush now, you need not apologise.” you’re proven right when his eyes return to the perfect colour you remember them for: a golden swirl moving within the rich cocoa, shining only as the light hits it. relief floods him when he rests his forehead on your own. he grips your hips firmly, swaying you both as you call for him.
“jaemin, what is it you do eat?”
“pretty girls named y/n.” oh how he wished you would have laughed then, instead of him opening his eyes to find your horror stricken face. “i swear to you that was a joke. that was in poor taste, i am so sorry.” you find his apology hard to believe as his body shakes, shaking your whole frame along with him.
“do not,” you hit his arm once, “mock,” and a second time though ineffective, “me!”
he saves himself quickly, retreating to safety by putting an unrealistic amount of distance between you two in an inexplicable amount of time. when he abandoned you, you nearly collapse forward with the force you were using to hit him before catching yourself.
“come here.”
“i drink blood.” you did not particularly dislike his attempt to stay on topic, just the topic itself. you try to appear enlightened but you have always found it difficult to repress your repulsion. “i know you have no interest in the macabre.”
“blood is meant to be inside you.”
“i think it tastes great.” he quickly arrives in front of you, your open books and abandoned letters fluttering all over the room as his speed garners its own winds. his thumbs journey over the veins on your wrists, slowly trailing up your forearms. he only speaks again when he hooks his thumbs under your jaw, tilting your head to allow his teeth to graze over the column of your neck. “it is reminiscent of fruit. some blood is like grapefruit and lemon. while some are akin to grape, strawberries.”
“oh,” you sigh, heart slowing as his lips drag along the base of your throat. he pulls back, gazing longingly at your wonderment as you feel his mood swing. bitterness seeps into his eyes in how his taste for blood ironically remains the only provision of some kind of memory of flavour, of normality. “do you enjoy it?”
“blood?”
“being a vampire.” no one has ever asked him such a thing. is there anything to enjoy about eternal life? about reliving his youth, being relocated, remade, renewed over and over and over, for an eternity.
as he gazes down at you, he remembers with all the bad must come some good.
“not always,” he smiles knowingly, thinking of his friends. the lives they built for themselves over a combined millennia. it almost makes him retract saying that. “i do regret some things. like allowing haechan to convince us to help real witches free the falsely accused during the witch trials. only to later discover he had a wager on being able to free more than their coven could.” he loved the way your eyes followed along, he loved knowing he could finally share his life in its entirety with you. “i have a thousand reasons why i should hate it, but I cannot bring myself to.”
“why?” he will find a way to forgive himself for giving you a reason to ask. he will ensure you needn’t ask again.
“because,” he whispers into your mouth, his lips slipping between your own, fingers clasped behind your neck. “if i had died in 1625, i would not have had the honour of making your acquaintance.”
“this is hardly an acquaintance,” you remind him, counting his years in your head as he pulls you flush against him utilising less than a speck of his strength. “careful grandsire,” it tumbles from your lips as he licks against your mouth. “i am not sure a man even three hundred years your junior could make it through what you are starting.”
“you needn’t worry about me,’ he sighs, his groin rolling against your own, his fingers clinging to your breakable frame. “though i must confess, my eating pretty girls named y/n was not said solely in jest.” his fingers toy with your knickers, ice cold digits moving freely along the waistband. “in fact, i fear my sanity depends on it. might you be of some aid?”
“who am i to deny a man nearing his fourth century?” he begs himself not to laugh, if only not to kill the mood but more so to avoid dignifying your mockery. his laughter morphs quickly into pants, your hand slotted wickedly between his own and his groin. “how might i be of assistance to you?”
“just as you are,” he whispers, his dulled teeth passing dangerously along the shell of your ear. as a man of his years, patience isn’t something which he is in short supply. but even then, one grows tired of waiting, for coitus, for love, for you. he is quick to remove your hand, finding his own pacing as he presses you against the wall, your heat pulsing beneath his cock, practically leaking. “i forgot how pliant humans are,” it is wicked how he watches you, his fingers rolling your hardened nub betwixt their pads. you shudder at the sight of him, his golden eyes darkening in the sunlit room, his tongue passing over his sharpened teeth. he smirks as you hiss, his fingers pinching your nipple before sucking it into his mouth. his tongue rolls in time with his hips, running his clothed cock along your clothed folds. he is quickly reminded of his strength as his palm collects dust as it meets the wall with a thud, steadying himself as you whine deliciously, his name bleeding from your raw lips. “yes, angel?”
“i need you,” you breathe, gazing up at him as his lips capture yours. your tongues move in tandem, wrapping around the other in a hypnotic frisk. he swallows your whimpers as he lures them out of you. he sucks your tongue into his mouth, hands moving to your rear before lifting you from the ground. he makes little work of you, rendering you a quarter of your size. your ankles lock around his waist as he casts your knickers aside, hissing as the pad of his finger meets your folds.
“might i have a taste now?” he pleads, eyes burning a fiery amber, pure adoration hidden beneath. “please, angel?”
“take all of me, jaemin.” he holds you still, a metre from the ground as he kneels, his hands firm around your thighs before he lowers you over his mouth. his flat tongue licks long stripes up your cunt, tongue flicking along your hooded clit in his descent. he likens you to a spring, his soul knelt before you, preparing an offering to your fountain. he is ready to collect all you offer him, your essence pouring out onto his tongue, soaking his lips, slick down his chin. his eyes fall to a close at the sight of your dazed form, your eyes screwed shut in prayer, his lips puckering around the hood of your clit, the tip of his tongue rolling against the nerve. “jaemin, right there, please.”
he hums in accordance, his tongue circling your clit as your thighs shake on either side of his head. he smirks as you still, his middle and ring finger entering your warm cavern, forcing your hips to roll against his digits. he curves them slowly, pressing against your pink walls, bulging up against your stomach. “you are so fragile,” he says, lips bitten as he watches your body succumb to his touch. he leans closer to you, steadying you on his shoulders to free his hand. he presses his palm to your abdomen, hypnotised by the feeling of his own fingers inside you. letting his thumb drift down, he pulls up the skin hiding your clit, allowing his lips to pucker against the nub before he offers a hard suck. his tongue joins the fold, drinking you in as you let out a sharp cry, the pressure inside and out joining forces to send you over the edge. “when you’re ready, love, come.”
he can feel your skin burning up, see the sheen of sweat coating your entire body. “jaemin,” you continue to chase your high, but cling to the moment. you feel like your convulsions might snap your body in two. that pleasure such as this cannot exist innately, that only he can bestow it on you. you are proven right as you grow more frantic, his fingers rub against the spot inside you that he found with great ease, as his lips suck on your clitoris. the final straw is his gaze, you feel it and fall victim to it. his irises a bright, angelic white, the rim speckled in gold. one cast of your eyes on your lover and you snap.
there is no doubting that as jaemin gazes up at you, he sees glory eternal. he sees life. he sees an angel.
“come angel.”
and you do. jaemin’s simple command breaks a dam, summoning a flood of pleasure you are unsure you will survive. hot iron passes through your veins, lighting you from the inside out. he continues without thought, his lips sucking the pleasure out of you, his fingers still pounding into your swollen pussy. only when your fingers find his hair, pulling him away with a sharp tug does he concede, lowering you into his lap.
“hi,” he says after some time, watching you pant against the wall. “are you still with me?” he jests, palms gliding up and down your aching thighs.
you hum, gazing up at the golden orbs that you decide you mustn’t live without. much like his life, and much like your love. eternal. “always.”

The brothers react to discovering they’re MC’s biggest fear
Wow the last few weeks have been hectic for me. Been feeling incredibly alone and don’t have anyone to talk to and found out I need surgery which will happen sometime soon. I’m glad to have gotten to motivation to get this out for you guys. I’ve a request coming next so keep an eye out. This one is based on how MC has been through so much and what if this affected MC greater than they realized? I hope you all enjoy this =)
WARNING: This react has spoilers for all of Obey Me up to Chapter 60
This story contains: Blood, mentions of death/murder, traumatic experiences.
Lucifer
Lucifer is cautious as he enters the room the bogeyman is hiding in with MC in tow.  Few things scare him, but what does are things he’d rather MC not know about.
Still, above all else he wants MC to be safe. If that means they find out something about him he’d rather them not know about, then so be it. Their safety and happiness are his priority.
As the bogeyman before them begins to warp its shape, he puts up his guard. With their combined power, Lucifer is sure the bogeyman, no matter which form it takes will be a triviality to deal with.
MC is too consumed by fear to see the shock and guilt consume Lucifer as, surprisingly, the bogeyman turns into him.
“Did you think you wouldn’t face consequences for your actions, MC? You’ve broken so many rules, interfered so much, that it's time you paid for your insolence with your pathetic human life!”
The real Lucifer was quick to banish his fake as it pounced on them. With it gone, he focused his full attention on MC, who was completely still, gazing at where the bogeyman once was.
He knelt, taking their hands in his own, rubbing them gently to slowly calm MC down. He told them he was sorry he’d scared them so badly. He would do whatever it took to fix his horrible mistake.
With a kiss to the back of their hand, he promised for as long as MC loved him, he would never do something to make them so scared again.
Mammon
Mammon was already terrified at the thought of facing the bogeyman again. Even a fake Lucifer was terrifying, and it was something he didn’t ever want to see again.
Still, with some gentle coaxing from MC, he followed them to face down the bogeyman. Once they enter the room, he moves behind MC to hide, while simultaneously bragging about how unafraid he is.
A rumbling begins that causes Mammon to jump. He sinks behind MC, awaiting the appearance of Lucifer, but to his surprise, nothing happens.
At first, Mammon is ecstatic! They’d easily banished the bogeyman without a scratch or scare. He is soon brought back to reality when he hears MC’s panicked cries.
“Mammon? Mammon can you hear me? Please don’t leave me again. Lucifer said you’d look after me and I’m confused and scared. Please come back, I won’t be annoying anymore. Please.”
At that moment Mammon comes to the horrible realisation that his abandonment of MC during their first few weeks in the Devildom when he saw them as nothing more than a burden had taken its toll.
He hugs them desperately, telling MC over and over that he is here and that if they wish it, he will never leave their side again. He tells MC that he’s sorry and that he loves them.
From then on, Mammon sticks to MC like glue. No matter where they go, he’ll follow unless they say otherwise. He promises to always be there to make sure they know they’re adored and never, ever alone.
Leviathan
It takes a lot of convincing to get Levi to accompany MC to confront the bogeyman, but he decides to go because the thought of MC going alone is something far worse than a fake, albeit horrifying copy of Lucifer.
Instead of Lucifer, however, what appears is another version of him in his demonic form. It looks furious, its tail flicking back and forth, knocking over lamps, leaving holes in the wall and smashing the window.
Levi though it would target him. After all MC had protection right? But it became clear and the creature turned to MC, its rage only increasing as it began to shout at the scared human.
“YOU CHEATED MC! I’M THE BIGGEST TSL FAN, NO ONE CAN BEAT ME IN A TSL QUIZ WITHOUT CHEATING!”
His copy keeping screaming at MC, looking ready to pounce at any moment. The real Levi for his part wanted to scuttle out of the room and forget what had happened. But he was spurred on by his love and need to protect MC.
Using his considerable power, he banished the bogeyman, the false version of him fading with a shrill shriek, leaving only MC cowering in fear.
Levi rushed to them, hugging them, peppering them with kisses (something that will later bring a blush to his face) and promising them he’ll never do anything to make them that scared again.
He keeps his word and is also careful to manage his temper when it comes to his passions while MC is around. He also does his best to work with them to help them overcome their fear.
Satan
Satan isn’t fearful of the bogeyman as he entered the room with MC. He wants the creature gone, especially after it scared his brothers so badly. Upsetting his brothers like that is not something he will let go of so easily.
He wonders what the creature will become when they encounter it. He doesn’t have any fears, at least any he will admit to himself, and MC has the blessing of Luke. Would it even be able to do anything against them at all?
As the door closed behind them the creature begins to morph. Satan decides to take this moment to banish it, wanting to be rid of it before it caused them problems. He pauses though when what appears before him is none other than himself in demon form.
“How DARE you compare me to Lucifer MC! How foolish I was to expect anything more from a sniveling, weak human. Now you’ll pay fo-.”
Before the copy has a chance to do anything more, Satan acts, banishing the creature from sight to some distant unknown realm.
The threat gone, he turned his attention to MC. They were still as stone, still scared of the image of him. Guilt floods him, and he rushes to MC, profusely apologising and begging them to forgive him. He has done so much damage to his love that he can’t forgive himself until MC is happy again.
Being the Avatar of Wrath, he will always have an angry side, but he does his best to calm down and refrain from getting out of control while MC is around. He also becomes far more affectionate, often snuggling with them as he reads them stories or watching cat documentaries.
Asmodeus
Asmo is worried about how ugly the bogeyman will make him. He knows that his greatest fear is being ugly, and it brings him genuine fear thinking of all the horrible, ugly versions of him the bogeyman could conjure.
The form the creature creates is of him, but he’s his normal, beautiful and dazzling self. He thinks it’s a trick for a moment, and he waits for the form to shift. Instead, it speaks, looking directly at MC.
“Why would I love someone like you? I’m perfection incarnate. You’re my plaything, someone I’ll discard like the rest. Don’t think my affectionate words are anything more than sweet nothings.”
Asmo turned to MC, who was now backed against the wall, their hand covering their face, but doing nothing to hide their sobs.
Asmo rarely becomes as enraged as he did at that moment. He isn’t one to not get angry, but true rage from his is rare. With all the fury and power he can muster he summons a portal and forces the bogeyman through, sending it somewhere it will never return from.
With the bogeyman gone, he turns his attention to MC. He approaches them slowly, moving beside them. He isn’t sure how to proceed. His heart is aching at seeing MC so upset and he wants them to smile that beautiful smile again.
He starts to name each and every part of MC and why he loves it so much. From their nose to their toes, he doesn’t stop until MC is smiling again.
From then on he showers them with affection and love. Every morning starts with a compliment and a loving kiss, and he always makes sure MC knows he couldn’t live without them.
Beelzebub
Beel enters the room first, wanting to shield MC from anything the bogeyman might decide to do. He’ll gladly endure whichever one of his fears the creatures summons if it means MC stays safe.
Despite his effort, as the bogeyman warps its form, what appears is him in his demon form. This form is angry, its stomach loudly growling also drowning out the angry words being spoken by the creature.
“WHY DID YOU EAT MY PUDDING, MC? THAT WAS MY PUDDING AND YOU’VE GONE AND EATEN IT. NOW WHAT AM I SUPPOSE TO EAT?!?”
As the creature screamed and shouted the sounds of shattering plates and crumbling brick echoed around, though nothing in the room was touched.
MC was terrified, backing away until their back touched the wall, too overtaken with fear to move any further.
Not wanting MC to suffer any longer Beel focused on banishing the creature. Focusing his power, the creating began losing shape. It fought him, but eventually, it faded from sight, banished back to where it had come from.
After the bogeyman is defeated, Beel approached MC. They’ve calmed down now the bogeyman is gone, but it has affected them. He apologises for allowing his hunger to overtake him so much that it caused them to fear him so much.
He gently hugs them, promising he’ll do whatever he can to help them overcome their fear and to never let his hunger overtake him so badly again, two promises he seals with a kiss.
Belphegor
Deep down Belphie knows what he’ll see if the bogeyman targets him and shows him his greatest fear. But he doesn’t want to admit it. The reality of admitting it is too much for him.
He accompanies MC regardless. He knows that together they can overcome whatever is waiting for them.
But Belphie didn’t fully realise exactly what the bogeyman would become. It began to take shape the moment the door shut behind them, forming into him in his demon form, fresh blood dripping from his hands and tail and splattered all over his clothing.
“Guess you are just a stupid human, huh? Falling for my silly trick you deserve to suffer and die like this.”
MC is petrified, begging him to not hurt them. It was MC’s fear that inadvertently spurred on their magic, banishing the creature without them realising.
With the bogeyman gone, Belphie could only stare at MC. He didn’t realise how much what he had done hurt them, and now that he did, he feared no matter what he did he would only make it worse.
Everyone waiting outside bursts through the door after hearing MC’s cries, and goes over to comfort them. Belphie decides to leave and return to the mansion and begins avoiding MC, thinking it better he stayed away.
It takes MC approaching him with Beel for him to talk with him, rather than leave the room. They talk and both agree to work together and heal so they can move forward, starting their journey with a hug and a kiss.

Tumblr media
For the life of him, Inuyasha could not figure out why people were staring at them more than usual or, more unnervingly, why Miroku kept giving him some very uncomfortable glances filled to the brim with amusement. Per the norm when the things made him uneasy, Inuyasha had taken to sticking a little closer to Kagome than he traditionally would have in a clearly hostile village. Not because he couldn’t protect himself, okay? He was perfectly capable of protecting himself and had for over a hundred years. And, to be clear, being around her didn’t make him feel safe. Definitely didn’t need to feel safe when he could defeat these assholes with one hand behind his back. He absolutely did not need Kagome to protect him and she wouldn’t be able to do much on that front in any case. It was just that he felt a little more secure near her. Secure was not the same thing as safe. Not at all. He didn’t need her to feel safe. Just…a little more confident when he was admittedly a little anxious people were staring. At first, it actually wasn’t that bad but the stares just kept getting worse and so…
But he was not staying close because he was scared. He wasn’t scared of anything. Except, well, losing her so…so that was probably why he felt the need to stay close. So he could protect her if shit hit the fan. Knowing that she was safe made his chest less tight and his stomach stop churning. Sure as hell wasn’t because…
Letting out a controlled exhale, Inuyasha distractedly flicked at some crust that had somehow lodged itself in the corner of one eye before letting his hand drop again.
“What a beautiful public display,” Miroku hummed as he sidled up to his companions and gave Inuyasha a mischievous grin, “It’s almost heartwarming to see two young people so in love.”
For some unknown reason, Kagome choked as her heart started beating so fast from fear Inuyasha’s instincts nearly went into overdrive. Why the hell was the wench so terrified?
Glancing around, amber eyes widened at the realization that Kagome might be just as worried about the stares they’d been receiving. Maybe she was staying close to him for….similar reasons he’d been staying close to her.
“You need to shut up,” Inuyasha hissed quietly before lowering his volume more so as to not be overheard - somehow making the monk look even more amused, “This ain’t the place to say shit like that. The villagers have been watching me like a hawk.”
“I absolutely cannot imagine why,” Miroku snickered as he pointedly glanced down and set his jaw to keep his shit eating grin in check, “In any case, Sango is almost done buying provisions so why don’t we move on ahead, hm?”
“Fine by me,” Inuyasha huffed as he began walking forward only to realize - when the thing in his hand jerked once to keep him in place - exactly why people were staring. Amber eyes widened in mild horror as they darted to the hand clasped securely in his own which was attached to the miko herself.
When did they start holding hands? He sure as hell didn’t do that and yet his palm was slightly sweaty indicating he’d been holding her hand for some time now.
“We should wait for her,” Kagome chided nervously as she gave Inuyasha’s hand a light squeeze making butterflies erupt in his stomach, “It shouldn’t be much longer.”
Mentally going over their day, Inuyasha tried to pin point when exactly the hand-holding started. They’d been walking side by side most of the day but he…he didn’t remember…
She must’ve started it.
“Why are you holding my hand?” Inuyasha asked - even though he took no action to cease the contact.
Giving him a strange look, the miko gave him an answer he did not like.
“Because you kept putting your hand in mine?” Kagome replied slowly - her worried look morphing into an amused one, “Wait…”
Some flashed behind her eyes and the melting look on her face made his stomach churn.
“Aw, you didn’t…”
“No ‘aw’. There is no ‘aw’ here,” Inuyasha huffed as he pulled his hand back and tucked both hands into his sleeves, “You did this. Not me.”
The melting look increased and Kagome gave him an affectionate smile.
“Awww….”
“What did I say about no ‘aw’!” Inuyasha huffed desperately, “I didn’t start this.”
“Yes you did,” Kagome sing songed and much to Inuyasha utter shock, a nearby elderly human woman chuckled softly to herself while looking between the pair with something akin to strangerly affection. Which disturbed him as much if not more than whatever was happening with him and his wandering hand.
Breathing heavily, Inuyasha’s mind continued racing down every moment of this fateful day. Trying to find the moment or apparently moments where he’d been the one to instigate the offensive touch but no matter how hard he tried, he had no memory of it. None whatsoever. Every minute of that day had felt natural. Normal even.
“D-do I do shit like that a lot?” he finally asked - his Adam’s apple bobbing as he tried to keep his composure.
“No but I liked it,” Kagome admitted with a hum before taking a step closer and giving him a shy smile that had his ears pinning back against his head.
And then she did something that absolutely crashed his mind…
She stood on her tiptoes and pressed a quick kiss on his cheek.
“You can hold my hand whenever you…”
“Are you insane?! You can’t just kiss me like that in strange villages,” Inuyasha hissed as his mind finally caught up - his hand desperately trying to wipe away the perceived sin. Kagome’s grin only made his anger and discomfort grow hotter.
“To be clear then, it’s okay if I do that in familiar places?” came her teasing retort and for a moment, Inuyasha was almost very, very stupid. He almost said something along of the line of forbidding kisses entirely. Something he most certainly did not want to forbid. Especially considering she was pretty much saying she’d give him kisses if he wanted them.
Blushing faintly, Inuyasha decided the best course of action was to react normally. Brush her off and declare her stupid…
Thankfully the old woman watching saw the incoming relationship bomb coming before it landed and for some unknown reason, felt inclined to defuse the explosive before it detonated.
“Be bold boy and say yes,” the elderly woman chuckled softly, “A girl like that won’t wait for you forever and the monk is right. Anyone with eyes can see you love her.”
“Stay outta this” Inuyasha snapped irritably - a reaction to which the old woman thankfully seemed amused by, “What makes you so bold?”
Miroku’s hand flew to the top of his head - hoping his friend didn’t just incur someone’s wrath and also…didn’t Inuyasha just say they shouldn’t draw attention to themselves? Was this just how he coped with fear and anxiety? Antagonize people? If so, how was Inuyasha still alive?!
“Well this was my husbands village and now it belongs to my son. Everything that happens here is my business,” the old woman hummed - giving the somewhat nervous trio a reassuring smile, “And seeing as how you’re in my village, what I say goes.”
“Crack pot,” Inuyasha huffed - earning a full blown facepalm from the miko - and the old woman, to her credit, simply smirked. Not at all afraid of the teenager even with all his fangs and demonic energy. Mostly because he was obviously domesticated and in the presence of equally powerful friends who could stop him from doing any real damage but also because this demon clearly had a good heart and therefore, she reasoned, wouldn’t harm her.
And while that was all mostly true, that didn’t mean Inuyasha wasn’t seriously considering punching her.
“Inuyasha, you need to be nicer to people.”
“Fine. Fine,” Inuyasha huffed as his blush deepened. Glancing at the old woman to make sure she wasn’t upset by what he’d said, Inuyasha turned his gaze back towards the miko who was clearly expecting him to apologize to the old woman. Which he wasn’t gunna do but he could fix one thing that probably needed fixing for a while now.
Squaring his shoulders, Inuyasha cleared his throat and…tried…
“It’d be annoying but if you…you want to kiss me sometimes, I won’t stop you.”
Kagome blinked once then twice.
“Come again?”
Quickly reaching over to push Miroku away face first before he could add in his two cents, Inuyasha tried to look like what he’d said wasn’t awkward as hell.
“I said if you want to kiss me, go ahead. Old bat was right,” Inuyasha hufffed before his eyes widened in horror at what he’d impulsively implied, “I mean, you already j-just do shit. I c-can’t really stop you.”
Kagome made a bemused face and wrinkled her nose at this bizarre admission. That was at least twice now that Inuyasha hadn’t shot someone down after they announced he loved her. Which was unusual and for someone as easily triggered as he was, that left her with a most wonderful conclusion.
One that he apparently realized she’d come to and so Inuyasha did what Inuyasha do.
He tried to protect himself. Poorly.
“I see that look. Don’t be stupid. I mean…yeah, she was right about…about the love part…I do, um, love you, ya know, as a friend. A good friend. And, um, sometimes friends they kiss I think.”
“Well if that is true I must inform San…”
With a soft groan at his own cringeworthy awkwardness, Inuyasha once again necessarily pressed his hand against the closer than usual monk’s face and gave it a light push. This was already nerve racking enough without the monk making it more weird on purpose. First he was holding his woman’s hand without realizing and now he’d all but admitted how he felt. Something he’d been denying himself because he didn’t want to force someone to walk beside him as he faced the constant pile of shit being thrown at him. Add to that he didn’t deserve to be happy when Kikyo was suffering and it was just…wrong to feel like he did.
What he wanted didn’t matter. It never mattered…
Kagome smiled and his stomach turned into pleasant knots.
Except it did. Hell did it ever. He couldn’t even go more than a day without this woman before he lost his fucking mind. What was he going to do if she knew and didn’t feel the same way? Or worse, what if a chance at a relationship ended badly?! If she left him, she’d take the only friends he’d ever had with her…
He’d be alone…
“Uh….huh…”
Panicking now, Inuyasha decided to rely on old faithful and go for an insult to force her back into friendship lane. This was getting into dangerous territory. She knew. Mainly because he told her but he…he could fix it.
“W-why are you so s-stupid, huh?” Inuyasha added a little desperately and much to his horror Kagome’s knowing smile only grew, “I’m just saying you just do shit and…I mean, what am I supposed to do, huh? You just throw yourself at…”
The old woman snickered at the scene and threw in her thoughts with a bemused laugh, “Please just kiss him young lady and put us all out of our misery. He talks far too much for his own good.”
“STAY OUTTA THIS YOU OLD…” Inuyasha began to bellow before whimpering softly when Kagome sealed his mouth with her own. Before he knew it, his arms were pulling her up and against him to give her the best access. It was beautiful and pure and everything he’d hoped a real kiss would be like. While she had done that before, this was the first time she’d done it for a reason other than saving his sorry ass. She’d done that only because she wanted to and that fact that she’d done it just because nearly brought a tear to his eye. Did she…did she love him back?
“You know,” Kagome panted lightly as she pulled back and nuzzled her man’s nose, “I love you too.”
Visibly wilting in relief, Inuyasha gave Kagome the most affectionate look anyone had ever seen on his face. A look that crumpled and turned to annoyance when Miroku made another comment about ‘public displays’.
The old woman simply rolled her eyes and continued on her way - mentally chuckling to herself about how the youth of today could be so foolish and how life was far too short.
A short distance away her middle aged son was watching his mother with a weary smile while the pair of mercenaries seemed to discuss something of great magnitude.
“That’s a dangerous thing you just did.”
“I did nothing but nudge those two down a path they were already on,” the old woman chuckled softly - reaching out to pat her son’s arm, “Love is love sweetheart. It’s one of those funny things in life that just is.”
For a long moment, the son watched the newly formed couple as they resumed holding hands before sighing and turning to follow his mother.
“I meant you meddle far too much” the son continued - glancing over his shoulder to make sure they went being overheard, “They’re mercenaries by trade. You saw their weapons. Probably fresh from some war and…”
“Mercenaries deserve love as well…”
The son let out a long exhale and rolled his eyes.
“Mother. That boy had claws…”
“Claws deserve love…”
The son stopped mid step and groaned that kind of exasperated groan only a child with an embarrassing parent would understand before glancing over his shoulder to watch the little band move on towards their next bounty. One day his mother was going to try to play matchmaker with the wrong two people…
But thankfully, it would seem she always managed to pick the right ones.

Secrets and Lies
Summary: Patton is terrified Janus is cheating on him. He didn't think the reality would be so much worse.
TWs: mentions of/aftermath of sexual assault
Notes: human au, established romantic moceit
Janus was capable of a lot.
He was, without a doubt, the best thing that had ever happened to Patton. His tough exterior melted away every time he looked at Pat, his words sweet and gentle, eyes shining with so much love it left Patton breathless.
Janus made Patton smile, made him laugh, made him feel safe. There wasn’t a day that went by where Patton didn’t think about their first date, when Janus had shrugged off his leather jacket and draped it over the younger boy’s shoulders, winking when Patton’s face went bright red.
He still liked to wrap himself in the jacket sometimes, months and months later. It was heavy, comfortably warm, and it smelled like his boyfriend even now.
The only thing that could top the feeling of the jacket was Janus himself, tall and warm and strong, wrapping his arms around Patton and pulling him to his chest. Patton would never feel safer than he did in Janus’s arms.
Janus had been the first good boyfriend Patton had ever had. The first one to be patient and gentle with him, to be open and honest, to feel like home.
Janus was capable of making Patton happy. He was capable of making him feel safe, like he belonged. Patton knew he would keep his heart safe.
He never thought Janus could be capable of cheating on him.
And maybe… maybe he wasn’t. Maybe Patton was misreading the situation completely, paranoid from past experiences, plagued with memories of past relationships.
Janus wouldn’t do something like that. Patton was jumping to conclusions.
But… but Patton had seen it. He’d seen the mark on Janus’s neck, not even close to faded, only visible for a second when his shirt collar slipped down when he leaned forward to kiss Patton.
The mark had been there, clear as day, and Patton knew for a fact he hadn’t been the one to put it there. Not when he’d barely seen Janus the last two days.
Patton hadn’t been mad about Janus being distant. He’d texted and said he’d be busy for a bit, apologizing profusely and promising to make it up with a movie date as soon as he could, and Patton had of course understood.
But now here they were, cuddled up on the couch after almost two days of not seeing each other, and Janus had a hickey on his neck he was clearly trying to hide with a long sleeved shirt.
Patton hadn’t said a thing. He didn’t know how, forcing back tears and ducking his head as his vision blurred. He rested his forehead on Janus’s chest so he wouldn’t have to see the mark again, squeezing his eyes shut as Janus held him.
Patton proceeded to spend the rest of the week crying.
Everything suddenly looked like a red flag, the crushing realization that Janus could be cheating, sending him into sobs. He’d had to leave class once, locking himself in a bathroom stall when the thought had been too much to bear.
He was being paranoid. He knew he was. This wasn’t fair to Janus.
But Janus had just… been so distant. He’d disappeared for almost two days, came back with a hickey on his neck, and now it was like he was barely there.
He was as sweet as ever, smiling at Patton and holding his hand, but he was around noticeably less. He kept canceling plans, skipping class, putting off dates.
He was only wearing long sleeves now, and when he and Patton had gone out to lunch the other day he’d been wearing a turtleneck, despite the heat outside.
And he looked… exhausted. Like he wasn’t getting any sleep.
Like he’d been up all night.
Well, that made two of them. It was hard to fall asleep when Patton had spent every night sobbing into his pillow until his alarm broke through the hazy fog settling around his mind.
When the weekend finally came, and Patton found himself lying against Janus’s chest on the couch in his dorm like every Saturday night, he decided he couldn’t put it off any longer.
He’d seen a couple more marks while they were getting settled, covered up and faded enough that Patton would never have noticed them if he hadn’t actively been looking. He felt sick to his stomach.
“Can I ask you something?” Patton blurted, stiffening at his own words. “Just real quick.”
Janus immediately turned off the show they were watching, and Patton’s heart caught in his throat. He knew it wasn’t true. He knew Janus would never. He was just being paranoid, and asking something like this would just upset his boyfriend- his boyfriend who was endlessly wonderful and loving and loyal.
He just needed to hear it. He needed an explanation for this week or he’d never be able to relax.
“Yeah,” Janus said, quickly sitting up and giving his boyfriend his full attention, smiling brightly like he always did when he looked at Patton. “What’s up, Pat?”
“Uhm.” He hesitated, clasping his shaking hands together, willing himself to just calm down and get this over with. “Are you… I’m really sorry for asking this. Please don’t be offended.”
Janus just blinked at him, smile dropping slightly. “Okay…?”
“You’re not… cheating on me,” Patton finally managed. “Right?”
Janus froze, and Patton forced himself not to take the question back. “I… what?”
“You’ve just… got a few hickeys,” Patton explained. “And you were gone for those couple days and you’ve been so distant and you just… you look so tired.”
Janus’s expression morphed into one of panic, eyes widening as he pulled at his shirt to try to hide any visible marks, and Patton’s heart started to sink.
“I…” Janus hesitated, and he looked terrified. “I- I just… I’m sorry—”
“Please don’t,” Patton said, voice barely a whisper. “Please don’t do that.”
“Pat, I’m—”
“I thought I was just being paranoid.” Patton’s chest hurt, like his heart was breaking apart piece by piece, the world crashing down around him. “I thought you were different.”
Janus was scooting away from Patton, eyes wide and welling up with tears. Patton didn’t understand why he was the one who looked so upset, like he expected Patton to lunge forward and throw a punch. He wouldn’t. Even after this, he’d never even think about hurting Janus.
Besides, he didn’t even have the energy to cry.
“I’m- I’m so sorry,” Janus stammered out, and the words made Patton’s heart twist painfully. “I’m… I can explain. Please just let me explain.”
Patton sighed, frozen where he was, staring down at his lap. He just wanted to go to bed.
“Ok,” he said instead. “Go ahead.”
Janus’s breath caught in surprise, like he hadn’t expected Patton to actually hear him out. Patton wasn’t even sure why he was. Maybe he just wanted to know why. He wanted to know if there was something he could have done for Janus to stay.
“I—” Janus took a breath, trembling and unsure. Patton could hear him crying. “There isn’t an excuse.”
“No, there’s not.”
“I’m… I’m so sorry, I’m—”
“I can just go,” Patton cut in, his voice empty and hurt. “If you’re not gonna explain. It's fine.”
Patton felt the couch dip, listening as Janus moved even further away to press himself into the far corner of the cushions. Patton felt cold, his heart crumbling right in his chest.
“No, I just… I know you’re mad,” Janus said, and Patton scoffed. “And I’m not, I- I wasn’t… I promise I tried to say no. I promise I tried. I’m… I am so sorry, Patton.”
“What?” Patton’s head snapped up. “You what?”
Janus wouldn’t look at him, curled in on himself, breathing labored as he trembled and fought to catch his breath. “I’m sorry. I’m- I’m not trying to make excuses, I swear.”
Patton’s heart was pounding in his ears, panic rising for a whole new reason this time. “You tried to say no?”
“I know I should have tried harder,” Janus said, words coming out in a desperate rush. “I know I should have and I’m sorry. I know… I know I ruined this, I’m so sorry.”
Patton couldn’t breathe, frozen where he was on the other end of the couch. “Jan, that’s not...you didn’t want it?”
Janus finally glanced at him, eyes fearful and unsure. “Of course I didn’t want it,” he said, but it sounded resigned and defeated. Like it didn’t matter. Like it didn’t make a difference. “I’m… I was dating you, I- I wouldn’t… I tried to say no.”
Oh. Oh.
Oh no.
“Oh my god.” Patton didn’t know what to do, realization dawning and bringing blinding dread along with it. “That’s… that’s not cheating, honey oh my god. I had no idea, I… that’s horrible!”
Janus flinched, squeezing his eyes shut, but he was talking again before Patton could continue. “I’m sorry. I’m- I’m sorry I cheated and I’m sorry I kept it from you, I just didn’t—”
“Jan…”
“I know you’re mad,” Janus said again. “And that I can’t- I can’t fix it. I’m not trying to make excuses but I didn’t want it. I… I guess that doesn’t… make a difference. I’m so sorry.”
“No, no I’m not mad at you! That’s not cheating, baby. I’m so sorry, I had no idea.”
Janus warily glanced up, holding himself in a shaky death grip. “I… I cheated on you. Why are you apologizing?”
“No you didn’t,” Patton argued. “You were forced into something you didn’t want. What if someone did that to me?”
Janus dropped his gaze, tears streaming down his face. Patton had never seen his boyfriend cry before, and now he couldn’t seem to stop. “That’s different.”
“Why?”
“I didn’t… I didn’t try hard enough,” Janus said, quiet and so broken. “I could have tried harder to stop it.”
“Oh, honey that’s not… you didn’t cheat on me, Jan. You were assaulted.”
Janus didn’t move, looking small and miserable, hunched over himself. “But I kept it from you.”
“That’s not something you just say at breakfast,” Patton said, forcing himself not to reach out despite how badly he wanted to. “And you never had to tell me if you really didn’t want to. I shouldn’t have assumed the worst.”
Janus just looked impossibly confused, and it was slowly breaking Patton’s heart all over again. “I don’t… I’m still sorry.”
“It’s ok,” Patton assured. “I didn’t know, I’m- I’m so sorry that happened.”
“It’s my fault.”
“No, baby,” Patton said. “It isn’t. It’s never the victim's fault. Have you...told anyone else?”
Janus shook his head, holding himself impossibly tighter. “No. He… he said you would leave if you found out. He said it was cheating.”
Patton felt something cold settle in his gut, anger he wasn’t used to threatening to spill over. He carefully pushed it back down, taking in a shaky breath.
“He? He… who, Jan?” He’d asked it as gently as he could, but Patton quickly backtracked when Janus tensed, eyes widening in panic, his breathing hitching and picking up faster than before. “Alright, that’s ok. You don’t have to tell me right now.”
Janus was shaking, still refusing to meet his boyfriend’s eyes. “He… he said you—”
“You were being manipulated, Jan,” Patton said, quickly wiping away his own gathering tears. He could mourn for Janus later. “It’s not cheating, he lied to you. He's manipulating you into keeping quiet, honey.”
Janus shook his head, horribly unsteady hands moving up to run through and pull at his hair. “No it… I was with someone else and I hid it from you.”
“Someone assaulted you,” Patton carefully corrected him. “And you were scared to tell me. There’s a big difference.”
“But what if I could have gotten away,” Janus argued, desperate and scared. “If I- if I had just tried harder I could have. I was just… I panicked and I couldn’t—”
“Honey,” Patton cut in, as gentle and steady as he could manage. “I promise I'm not upset. Not with you. You didn’t do a thing wrong.”
He was upset that it happened, of course. He was furious, a deep protective rage settling in his chest. He’d give anything for a name, for a way to hunt down whoever had done this and wipe that manipulative smirk off their face.
But he wasn’t going to push Janus to tell him who it was. That could wait until after they’d both calmed down and talked it out.
When Janus spoke again, it was so quiet that Patton almost missed it. “Are you going to leave?”
“No,” Patton said. “I’m not going anywhere.”
Janus’s breathing was still fast and uneven, but it was starting to slow back down just a bit. “I don’t… understand.”
“You did not cheat on me,” Patton said firmly. “You didn’t want it, and it wasn’t your fault that it happened. I’m not upset with you.”
“I- I tried to say no,” he said, like he still needed to explain himself. His breath caught again, released this time in a broken, terrified sob. “I wouldn’t do this to you on purpose but I still did, I… I thought…”
He trailed off, the rest of his words indecipherable around the ragged sobs clawing their way up his throat, Janus left to choke on his words and bury his face in his hands.
“Oh, baby.” Patton scooted closer, pausing when Janus froze, wide eyes flying to Patton’s hands. “Is it alright if I touch you? I promise I’m not angry.”
Janus still hesitated, struggling to breathe around his crying, eyes still glossed over with fear like he thought Patton could be lying, burying his anger until he was close enough to take it out on him.
Patton didn’t push, waiting patiently with a sad smile until Janus finally nodded. He closed the distance between them, slowly leaning against Janus’s side and carefully cupping his boyfriend’s face in his hands.
“I’m here,” he said, brushing away his tears as they fell. “It’s ok. I’m so, so sorry that happened to you, baby.”
Janus closed his eyes, face falling at Patton’s gentle words. “It’s… it’s going to happen again.”
Patton froze, the cold dread back with a vengeance.
“No it won’t,” he said. “We’re… we’re gonna keep you safe, ok? I’m gonna make sure this never happens again.”
“You can’t,” Janus choked out, and he sounded so small. “You can’t you- you won’t… you won’t be able to, I’m… I’m really sorry.”
“It's not your fault,” Patton promised. “We’ll figure it out. The teachers will listen to me, we can go to administration.”
Janus scoffed in between sobs, shuddering under Patton’s hands. “Nobody will believe me, Pat.”
“I believe you.”
“And you’re the first.” The tears didn’t slow, and Janus’s breathing only picked up as he talked. “It’s fair, I don’t… exactly have a good reputation. Nobody’s ever believed me and nobody ever will. I gave up trying.”
Patton’s throat felt tight, suddenly wondering how many other situations like this Janus had been put in with no one to turn to. Was this not the first time? Had someone not believed him before?
“Well, you have me now,” Patton said. “And I believe you. We’re gonna get you help, ok?”
Janus didn’t look at him, exhausted and almost limp, the dark circles under his eyes even more prominent now that Patton could look at him closely. “I… alright. I’m sorry.”
“It’s ok.” Patton hesitated, hating himself for even considering his next words. But Janus would have to go back to his dorm eventually, and Patton needed to know it was safe to send him there. “Jan? It… it’s not Remus, is it?”
Janus’s head jerked up, eyes flying open as he pulled back, more shocked than afraid this time. “What? No, I- Remus is our friend. He wouldn’t- he would never—”
“I know,” Patton said, and he did. The idea had been ridiculous, stemmed from paranoia and overprotectiveness, but it was worth asking to know Janus would be safe in his own room. “I just want to make sure you’re safe, baby.”
Janus relaxed slowly, still rubbing his face with his sleeves, and Patton gradually gathered him back into his arms, shushing him gently, wiping his tears.
“It wasn’t Remus,” Janus clarified after a moment. “Remus would… he’d freak out and kill someone if he knew. You- you can’t tell him.”
“I won’t tell anyone you don’t want me to,” Patton said. “But we can’t just let this go, Jan. Especially not if you’re still in danger.”
Janus shuddered again, crying against Patton’s shoulder. “I don’t… I don’t want to keep doing this to you. I don’t know what to do.”
“It’s not about me, honey. It’s about you. You don’t deserve this.”
“I didn’t want to hurt you,” Janus said, cautiously reaching up to clutch at Patton’s back. “It was… I know it was selfish to keep it from you but I- I thought you’d leave and I couldn’t… I was so scared.”
“Oh, honey.” Patton held him, painfully gentle like Janus could shatter like glass. “You didn’t have to tell me. It was personal. I’m sorry I forced it out of you before you were ready.”
“He said I was cheating on you, I… I thought you’d hate me.”
“I don’t,” Patton said, running his fingers through Janus’s hair. “He was lying. I promise I don’t hate you, baby.”
He felt Janus tighten his hold, his boyfriend still trembling against his side. “Are we… still together? I understand if you—”
“Yes,” Patton interrupted before Janus could even finish that thought. “We are. I love you, Janus. Nothing has changed.”
“Oh,” Janus said, breathless. “I just- I thought… I’m so sorry.”
“It’s okay.”
Janus’s breathing eventually slowed, his sobs dying down as Patton held him, rocking him gently on the couch as the dorm gradually fell silent.
“I might skip tomorrow,” Janus muttered after a few moments. “I feel sick.”
“I’ll skip with you,” Patton declared. “Virgil’s out for the night, you can stay here. I’ll take care of you.”
“Are you sure?”
“Positive,” Patton said. “You can rest, baby.”
“I love you,” Janus suddenly blurted out, like he’d been working up the courage. “I can… can I still say that?”
“You can,” Patton said, moving to take Janus’s hand in his own. “I love you too.”
Patton went back to cupping Janus’s face, frowning as he gently wiped away lingering tears with his thumbs, lightly brushing the bags under his eyes. He kept one hand under Janus’s jaw, the other moving to run through his hair, moving it out of his face.
“You look so tired, baby,” Patton said, and Janus’s eyes slipped shut for a moment, his eyelids heavy. “Have you slept at all this week?”
Janus shook his head, and Patton leaned in to kiss his forehead when his eyes welled up with tears again. “I tried. I couldn’t get to sleep. Being alone wasn’t… helping.”
“Oh, baby.” Patton pulled back, reaching instead for Janus’s hands. “You can stay the night. I’ll help you get some rest, okay? We both need it.”
“You sure you’re okay with me staying?”
“Of course,” Patton said. “I want you to. Come on, let me help you to bed.”
Janus practically collapsed on top of his boyfriend by the time Patton guided them both under the covers, wrapping his arms around Janus’s back and letting him rest his head on Patton’s chest.
“I’ve got you,” Patton whispered, freeing one hand to play with Janus’s hair. “You’re safe. Go to sleep, baby.”
Janus was holding onto Patton like a lifeline, but he was sound asleep in minutes, his frantic grip loosening as he finally drifted off to sleep.
Patton’s own exhaustion from sleepless, stressful nights finally weighed down. Everything ached, panic and uncertainty lingering, everything dragging him down to sleep, begging him to just close his eyes and leave it behind.
He would fix this, he could promise himself that. He owed it to Janus to set everything right.
But he could do that in the morning. Right now, he could pretend everything was back to normal. He could hold his boyfriend, his wonderful, loving, loyal, boyfriend, and finally let himself sleep.

Sanctuary with the Enthralling Moon: Jasper Hale x Fleur Swan, Chapter 4
Tumblr media
Authors notes: I think this is my least favorite chapter I have wrote... but, I hope you guys like it anyway.
All rights go to Stephanie Meyer, none of the characters in Twilight are mine.
“Stay afloat When it feels like it's all going nowhere And you wanna know But the tide keeps trying to pull you under Let it go You can't fight the waves, boy, it's no wonder If you wanna grow Don't fight what's natural.”
Rush by, Kali Uchis
POV: Back to Fleurs.
Today I had woken up on my own and according to my alarm clock, it was already the afternoon. I stumbled down the stairs, almost running into a wall before making my way to the kitchen. I put my head on the table, trying wake myself up. It was crazy how fast the months had gone by. November and December came by in a flash and Leah and I had been hanging out more. I had almost dosed off in the kitchen when I heard my dad speak.
 “Hey Petal, Sam called... he wanted to see you today.”
“Sam? I didn’t except him to want to see me.”
“He was asking for you.”
“Okay, I’ll head down there now.”
I felt nervous on my way down there, I wondered why Sam was wanting to see me, why Bella was all of the sudden going down there. I stopped the car and sat there for a moment, collecting my nerves and unanswered questions and putting them in the back of my mind. When I got out I saw Sam, he looked pretty different from last year. His hair was cut short, he was way more buff, and he had a tattoo.
“Hey Fleur.”
“Sam.”
I sighed and then started walking toward the beach, Sam was trailing behind me.
“So... Jacob and Bella huh?” Sam started.
“What do you mean?”
“You haven’t heard anything about it?”
“No, Bella hasn’t had a civil conversation with me for a solid 5 months.”
“Oh... they’re apparently building dirt bikes down at Billy’s.”
“... She’s trying to kill herself... she won’t make it 5 inches without getting into some kind of accident.”
“Yeah...”
“Look... why did you call me? We haven’t talked for an entire year.”
“ I know you saw Leah yesterday, what did she say to you?.”
“We caught up, and then she told me what happened between you two. Why would you do that to her?”
“Do what?”
“Uh, break up with her after 3 years to then date and get engaged to her cousin? Someone who she was extremely close to mind you.”
“I wish I could tell you Fleur, but it’s complicated.”
“It seems to be all you do lately... You never explained to me why you didn’t want me to date Jasper so bad.”
“Because he’s a...”
“A what? Besides, I’m still dating him... I lived.”
“Of course you’re still with him. Your brain must’ve gotten fried back in Arizona.”
“Hey, don’t you dare insult my intelligence! What is with you? Why are you such a DICK all the time! Besides this isn’t about my relationship, this is about yours!”
“Don’t call me that Fleur.”
“Don’t insult me.”
“Hey, what’s going on down here?”
“Paul, stay out of this!”
“I’ll tell you whats going on, your friend here is being a complete dick!”
“Aww, did he hurt your feelings?” Paul said mockingly.
“Calling someone stupid tends to piss them off.”
“Well you don’t exactly look the intelligent type.”
I whipped my hand back and smacked him, He turned his head back around and started panting heavily. His face was red with anger and rage.
“Fleur... get back. Paul calm down.” Sam said
I slowly took a few steps back. All of the sudden Paul morphed into a wolf, I was frozen in my spot. Paul then took off, away from the beach.
“Sam... saying you turn into a wolf is not complicated... it’s pretty freaking clear. “hey Fleur... I turn into a giant ass werewolf.
“Come on, let’s head back to the house.”
“I would go with you... but I can’t move.”
Sam sighed before picking me up, he started running back down to the house.
“So... I’m going to assume being a werewolf has something to do with what happened Leah huh?”
“Yeah, it does...you see us werewolves have the ability to imprint on someone. This person could be a lover or just have a brother/sister relationship. We’re a protector to that person we imprint on.”
“So you imprinted on Emily...”
“Yeah, the second I locked eyes with her... I couldn’t stop myself from imprinting, it was as if someone else had over taken my body.”
“I get it now, you don’t really have a choice as to who it is, it chooses you.”
“Exactly.”
“Now that I got that part of the context clues it makes you seem way less of a dick...I’m sorry.”
“Don’t worry about it.”
“So... if your tribes legend is right, you know that the Cullens are vampires.”
“Yeah we do.”
“Listen, the Cullens are not bad people, they don’t even go after humans.”
“They’re still a bunch of leeches.”
“You need to have some faith in me here Sam. Jasper’s amazing, he would do anything for me. I would do anything for him... we protect each other. Even though, he does a lot more of the protecting than me.”
He sighed
“Okay, okay... I’ll trust him...  but that’s about as far as I will go on that.”
“It’s progress...”
Timeskip: A week later
It seems I was always going down to the reservation anymore after meeting Emily and having the whole imprinting thing cleaned up I was hanging around Sam a lot more. Today I was going to visit Billy and Jacob. I wanted to see if those rumors on the dirt bikes were true. Bella still wasn’t talking to me so... I would have to figure it out myself. When I got there I started walking toward an old red shed, I knocked on it, waiting for someone to answer.
“Come in!”
“Hey Jake, it’s been a while!”
“Fleur!” He ran toward me and spun me around in a hug.
“So are the rumors true? Where are the dirt bikes?”
“Yeah...what are you doing here Fleur.” Bellas voice had jumped in, venom leaked out of it.
“You haven’t talked to me in 3 months Bella. When I hear that you’re somewhere I have to investigate it... Me seeing you is a rare phenomena, it’s like it happens every 100 years.”
“Well you saw me, you can leave now.”
“Make me leave.”
“Okay you two, cool it. You can come with us if you want  We plan on riding the bikes down by the beach.”
“Oh...”
“No... she will not come with us.” Bella interrupted
“No don’t worry about it... I was going down to Sam’s I thought I would stop by on the way.”
Bella scoffed.
“Of course you’d hang out with Sam, Jake has told me about him, I heard he tries to influence people too.”
“Are you trying to insinuate that I made the Cullens leave, again?”
“Glad to know your brain still works.”
“I’m not starting this with you Bella, you’re not worth it I need to go, Emily is excepting me soon. It was nice to see you again Jake.”
“Yeah, I’ll see you around.” Jake looked between us... he looked trapped, caught in the middle of our childish fight.
POV Change: Bella’s
“Can you believe her Jake? I know she’s just trying to get me in trouble with those bikes... she’s probably on her way home telling Dad right now.”
“What’s up with you and Fleur? I really don’t think she came here to find proof of you doing this just to tell your dad.”
“You don’t know her like I do, she’s a manipulator...”
“I’ve just never known Fleur to be like that...”
“You haven’t been around her long enough to know her like I do... Can we talk about something else please?”
“Sure... we need to go anyway.”
Timeskip: To Sam and Emily’s AND a POV Change: Back to Fleur
Emily was making food in the kitchen, she was excepting the rest of the pack to come over today so she had her hands full. I was peeling potatoes and carrots while talking to Emily. It was nice, it was like talking to an older sister.
“So you Bella aren’t doing so well?”
“No... it was so weird, we had been getting along a lot last year... Then all of sudden we got into a fight in Arizona and we haven’t been the same ever since...”
“I understand how you feel, It’s the same way with Leah and I. Ever since Sam and I got together... it just hasn’t been the same.”
“I might be able to help you out with this one... Let’s say that the situation with Sam was flipped. He was with you, vanished for a week, and then imprinted on Leah when he came back. It would be a lot to take in for someone... I don’t mean to make you sound like the bad guy but... if you put yourself in her shoes, you might understand her a bit better.”
“Yeah, you’re right... I couldn’t imagine how that must feel. But, what do I do?”
“Just give her sometime. I’m positive she’ll come around, the way she talks about you to me seems full of love. She just needs some time apart right now.”
‘Okay, that’s fair... I’ll give her some space... thanks Fleur.”
“No probl...”
“Fleur come quick! Bella hit her head she’s bleeding.” Jacob said, he was panting as he if he ran down here. His shirt was missing too.
“Damn it... I knew she shouldn’t of gotten on those bikes... She trips walking on a flat service with nothing in front of her.”
I ran out of the house, Jake was running quickly behind me, I could see Bella leaning against her truck, holding Jake’s shirt on her head.
“Do you need me to drive you to the hospital?” I asked.
Bella didn’t even look at me, her head was turned to the side.
“Look, you can still hold a grudge against me... we don’t have to talk the entire way. But you literally bleeding out of your head... you need patched up.”
Bella groaned in annoyance, before throwing me her keys. She opened the truck door and then slammed it shut.
“Thanks for tell me Jake, I better go,”
“No problem.”
We didn’t say one word to each other the entire trip to the hospital, nor did we talk the entire ride home. I of course, had to explain to dad why she had a patch on her head.
“She and Jake were walking on the beach, the sand was a bit too slippery and she fell and hit her head on a rock.”
A week had gone by, Bella was even more tense than usual. Jacob had stopped talking to her after an incident at the movie theater with her and Mike. At least, that’s what dad had told me. My dreams with Jasper were getting more real and intense. The last phone call I had with him seemed like the dreams were starting to get to them.
Flashback to phone call.
“I saw you again, you were following me where ever I went, but you disappear before I can talk to you.”
“That’s so strange...”
“One day I’m going to call out for you, and you’re actually going to be there.”
“I hope so, I miss you so much.”
“I miss you too.”
Flashback over
“Petal, Harry and I are going on a fishing trip. Watch out for Bella, if she goes anywhere, follow her. I don’t know how she’s doing right now since Jake is talking to her... We don’t need another woods incident.”
“Sure, no problem.”
It seemed as soon as dad had left, Bella planned on leaving, I caught her before she could reach the door.
“Where are you going?”
“Does it matter?”
“No, I was just planning on going for a walk...I thought I would invite you to go with me.”
“Really? Where did you plan on walking then?”
“To the woods.” I lied on the spot
“Fine... I’ll go with you.”
We walked in the woods for a bit, the only sound I could hear was crunching underneath my feet.
“Do you know why Jake hasn’t talked to me?”
“No.” I half lied, I thought I knew what was happening...Billy had said Jacob had mono and he couldn’t even go outside. But, I thought he was changing, that he would become a werewolf soon.
“Oh come on Fleur, I saw you two talking outside before you went to drive me to the hospital... You want me to be completely isolated from everyone.”
“Are... are you insane? Did that hit you took from the bike accident damage your brain somehow? All I did was thank him for bringing you back.”
“Whatever... this is all your fault!” Bella said, she then sprinted out in the woods, trying to lose me.”
“BELLA!” I yelled and began to chase after her. I found her quickly though, and I saw her hunched on the ground, picking at dead bits of grass. I heard rustling on the other side of the field. Bella heard it too and looked up, she then gasped.
“Laurent?”

always yours - yi city mdzs characters hcs
the last of the best friend series head canons!
this is a modern version (stay tuned for a different version (v^ー°) )
»»——⍟——««
Xiao Xingchen
stepping into high school, you’ve always felt out of your depth
both from the pressure of moving to a new town and entering another stage of education in your life
it was kind of intimidating
mildly stressful
and you know it shouldn’t be much of a bother to try and fit in and find your crowd
because good things take time (as your parents have reminded you)
and that you were such a lovable person, so
who wouldn’t want to be your friend?
but it still didn’t change the fact that it was hard, nonetheless
luckily, when you’re kind of floating about in between the crowds of people and laughter in the first lunch of your first year, see an empty seat for you to snag
considering how crowded the lunch room was, you feel quite proud of yourself
so you sit down at the spot without a second thought
not even realizing that the seat in front of your empty one was occupied
you’re digging heartily, halfway through your sandwich, when you realize that someone is looking at you
and that’s when you meet Xingchen, immediately humored by your enthusiasm with food
definitely not one of your best first impressions
but it’s surely something that sticks
because aside from finding out that you both are in the same grade, you both have a plethora of classes together as well
and it becomes easy for you to find a familiar face to gravitate to in your classes
throughout the year
he’s the person that saves you a seat in the cafeteria whenever the teacher from the previous class lets you out late
you’re the person that shares your notes with him in class so that you both can be caught up
you’re each other’s first choice as partners
and it’s so so easy being friends with someone as lovely and wonderful as Xingchen
and he’s so great in everything
from his smarts
to his genuine kindness
and you know that he deserves the world
which is why
your world comes to a halting stop
when Xiao Xingchen is suddenly blinded after an accident
luckily he’s not fully blind
but his vision is heavily impaired
and you know that your high school is not the right environment for him safety and social wise
you know it is for the best that his parents are making plans to find a better accommodating school for him
but...
he’s your only, truest, friend,
and it’s only been a short while since you both have met
but you can’t imagine going through the last remaining two years high school without
and as you sit next to his hospital bed, feel his warm hand clutch yours
you think that
he feels the same
»»——⍟——««
A-Qing
you meet A-Qing as you’re helping Xiao Xingchen around the your high school, helping him to orient in an old place through a new perspective
you can’t lie and say that it’s not frustrating
but Xingchen’s always been more patient than you
even now,
when you were supposed to be helping him
it saddens you sometimes
when you can’t be of more help to him than you currently are
“i think this would be pretty useful,”
both you and Xingchen startle at the voice that talks to you both
your eyes find a young girl, probably a freshman, staring up at you
her hand holds out a small foldable stick
“it’s a white cane, it’ll help him feel out the floor better than you saying ‘watch out’ every other minute” the girl notes
“he can still see,” you try to correct, because everyone nowadays just assumes that Xingchen is fully blind... and he just accepts it like he accepts everything in his life-
“oh, i’ve never tried a cane before. i think that could be of help,” Xingchen says in his quiet voice, he turns to you though not fully enough to meet your eyes staring at him
you’ve gotten more used to his profile than his full face as of recently
“can you give it to me, y/n” Xingchen asks you,
and he’s using that voice with you
the ‘be patient, let’s try it’ voice
you manage a stiff nod at the girl, and take the white cane from her and open it from Xingchen
we you place the handle that he’s supposed to hold in his palm, Xingchen as polite as ever says,
“thank you... um...”
“A-Qing,” the girl finally introduces and then turns to you, a half smile on her face
“and you’re y/n,” the young girl parrots from what she heard before
you nod at her, a small ‘thank you’ coming from you too
‘it’s no problem. my grandma is blind so i understand you too,” A-Qing says
at that, you realize, that it would be good to befriend someone that has experience in helping visually impaired people
because you wanted to learn how to help Xingchen better
you friendship starts from Xingchen’s hardships
but as you three spend more time together,
the difficulties of his life lessen
especially with A-Qing’s support
you two become his two closest friends
and A-Qing morphs more into a little sister to you
because for all of her knowledge with Xingchen’s situation, she was still very very new to the high school situation
so she relied on your guidance (in that aspect) as much as you relied on her to help you help Xingchen
but you three come together like a sandwich
and all is well
until your third year of high school
when trouble comes in the form of a human person
»»——⍟——««
Xue Yang
trouble goes by the name of Xue Yang
your high school is relatively medium sized so you think that if you haven’t met everyone yet at least you know of most people
but
when you walk into the hallway at the sight of someone taunting Xingchen, you can’t help the way your blood boils
A-Qing is still young,
and the boy that’s flicking and pushing at Xingchen’s calm shoulder looks to be about your age, an junior
you’re about to intervene when you’re surprised at Xingchen’s quick handed grasp of the man’s hand when it lands on his chest for the third (and final time)
Xingchen holds the wrist tightly
and you remember that before, a short while ago, Xingchen used to do material arts after school
he probably never forgot his instincts, having practiced for so many years
“what do you think you’re doing?”
at the sound of your voice, the boy spares you a glance,
and then you give a short sigh under your breath
because it was Xue Yang
it was always Xue Yang
“just chatting with your boyfriend, y/n. no need to go all mama bird” Xue Yang teases and takes his hand roughly out of Xingchen’s grasp
“he’s not my boyfriend,” you correct Xue Yang, going up to Xingchen’s side to stare Xue Yang down
Xue Yang laughs, humorlessly
“you sure about that? because i think you’re probably babying him even more than his real mother,” and you really want to land a good fist to Xue Yang’s face
but Xingchen’s true testament to your friendship is that he just knows you well enough to reach a hand out and hold your wrist, hold you back from doing anything rash
because your little convo with Xue Yang had already grabbed enough of a crowd
you let Xiao Xingchen and A-Qing lead you away, though you manage to spare a long glare at Xue Yang before he fully leaves your sight
from then on, you all try to avoid Xue Yang as best as you can
and you stay closer to A-Qing and Xiao Xingchen
because it seems like you’re Xue Yang repellent
he only bothers the other two when you’re not within the vicinity
and you don’t dare think that Xue Yang is scared of you (Xue Yang isn’t scared of anything)
but it’s a little blessing that you’re grateful for
you don’t want anyone making Xingchen’s life harder than it already was
and you think that you can get through the last few months of junior year without trouble
well you hope
but one memorable time that trouble visits you
is in the turn spring
right before you you’re about to finish your junior year (practically already a senior in high school)
Xue Yang catches your arm when you’re on your way out of school after your free block
drags you to the bleachers despite your protests
you glare at him,
he stares at you, sighs
“what?” you ask
“you don’t care about anything that has to do with us do you?”
you sigh as you lean your back on the edges of the bleacher seats
“why do you put your friends before us all the time?”
“because he needs me-”
“more than i do?”
Xue Yang’s question surprises you, slightly
but you regain your composure quickly
“talk to me again when you learn that a relationship has friends and partners,
not everything in life is about you”
and that’s the final time you talk to him
»»——⍟——««
Song Lan
Song Lan comes back into your life as abruptly as he had left it
he had always been more of Xingchen’s friend than yours
you remember him being introduced to you as the quiet, barely smiling but loyal friend that Xingchen knew from way back
he and you never talked much
but he talked a lot with Xingchen
and you could tell that the both of them were close
they made each other happy
which was why his abrupt exit from high school
at the time where Xingchen needed him the most
was difficult for you to understand
though at the same time
his departure gave you a better chance to prove your friendship to Xingchen
to be the person that was there for him when it seemed like no one was
and you think that the chapter of old friendships had closed when you graduated high school
so you didn’t think you’d ever see Song Lan again
let alone, see him in your second year of college in the middle of your campus walk with Xingchen’s arm linked with yours
“y/n? why’d you stop? we’re going to be late for class”
and now, with Xingchen fully blind
you were somewhat the eyes for him when it came to new places and people
A-Qing was still in her final year of high school, already planning on following your footsteps and applying to the same college as you guys
so it was all left to you
how do you explain to XIngchen that you just saw his best friend that had left him in high school all those years ago without so much as a goodbye?
should you even let him know?
luckily, you don’t have to make the choice
when Song Lan turns and walks away immediately, not looking back
“it’s nothing, i was just startled when a squirrel ran past,” you lie to Xingchen
and continue walking on the path that you both are on
but Xingchen knows you better than yourself
and he can tell that your grip around his arm is a bit tighter than before
but he doesn’t mention anything
~~~
fate would have it that that was not the last encounter that you have with Song Lan
and the next time you do see him, you don’t let him off the hook so easily
“where did you go? how are you here now?” you ask him, when you manage to latch onto his arm at the small campus cafe
he takes his wrist out of your grasp easily
though his face looks slightly more expressive than you remember he used to be
“how’s Xingchen?” he counters with you and you huff out an exasperated laugh
“you wouldn’t need to ask me that if you had been there for us,” you find yourself saying
because you can still remember, vividly
the first few weeks of Xingchen’s blindness
his embarrassment towards you where you know he wouldn’t have been with Song Lan
and how much he missed him
“do you... do you think i can see him?” Song Lan asks, a beat after your heavy comment
you truly wonder what Xiao Xingchen would have to say to this
because you may be his best friend
but you can’t make his decisions for him
“i don’t know, why don’t you ask him,” you tell Song Lan, then tilt your head
when Song Lan turns around, he sees the person who he’s looking for right away
Xiao Xingchen is hard to miss
Song Lan stares
now it all comes down to, whether or not he would take the first step to him or not
She Loves Me
Chapter 1
A/N: Hi guys. It’s been a minute. Here is the long awaited (by no one) She Loves Me AU. I’m putting chapter 1 out here in the hopes that people waiting for updates will spark some creativity in me again. I’m sorry it’s short. If you enjoy, let me know
Word Count: 1703
Warnings: not proof read.
Tumblr media
The sun was blazing down on you as you scurried down the busy New York sidewalk. The summer had decided to be blazing hot this wonderful morning, and you had decided to be extraordinarily late for work. Well, perhaps ‘decided’ isn’t the right word— you’d overslept on account of staying up extra late to finish a letter to your Special Friend.
There was no shame in using a dating service, you knew that, yet for some reason the very thought of joining one was something that you had scoffed at for so many years. “I want to meet someone organically,” you’d complain to your friends, “those services are full of strangers who have the weirdest quirks.” To be fair, that had been true in your brief experience using a dating service in college. It was definitely an odd time, figuring out exactly what ‘watersports’ meant. Needless to say, it had taken one single date for you to decide to withdraw your application and swear off dating services.
But you were getting older. And men seemed to just get more and more picky, the older they got. So, when you stumbled across an advertisement in your Sunday newspaper for a matchmaking service called ‘Special Friends’, you jumped at the opportunity. The directions were simple; you filled out the survey in the paper, mailed it to the listed address, and then your answers were compared with other submissions to find the best match for you. Once you received your match, you were to write a letter to them introducing yourself and signing off under the title of ‘Special Friend’. The two of you were given a specific P.O. box to drop your letters off to, provided by the matchmaking service. The only real rules were that the letter had to be handwritten, and you were only allowed to give real names if both parties agreed on it.
Your Special Friend was a true kindred spirit. It had been six months of trading letters back and forth, and the two of you spoke about everything, from your childhoods to your favorite books, from dream destinations to worst fears. About three months into this correspondence, you knew that, whoever this Special Friend was, you loved them. You stayed up until all hours of the night writing draft after draft until you formed the perfect letter. Because of this, you were often late for work in the morning.
Late. That’s right. You were very late. You willed your feet to move you as fast as they possibly could, cursing yourself for choosing this morning to wear heels. Finally, you managed to burst through the door just minutes before opening, scurrying to the back to drop off your bag. You made a mental note to yourself to start carrying flats in your purse, in case of emergency.
You’d just finished touching up your makeup in the small staff room mirror, when you felt someone sidle up beside you. You didn’t have to turn your head to know who it was. The smug energy emanating from his every pore was enough to confirm your suspicions of who was next to you. Santiago Garcia. Your worst nightmare in human form.
“Can I help you with something, Mr. Garcia?” You didn’t even spare him a glance as you finger-combed your hair, which was now windswept from your impromptu jog.
“Not at all, Miss Y/L/N,” Santiago flashed you a smile that, in any other circumstance, would have been charming. You, however, knew that pure contempt lurked behind those pearly white teeth. “I was just marveling at the rare sight of you, here, on time!”
“And why would that be something to marvel at, Mr. Garcia?” you scowled.
“Well, simply because it’s never happened before!” Santiago leaned against the wall, charming smile morphing into the smirk that often adorned his chiseled face. “You know, Miss Y/L/N, you may want to stop frowning so adamantly. At your age, those frown lines tend to stick around.”
“At my age?!” you nearly shrieked at him. “Mr. Garcia, need I remind you that you are older than I am!”
His smirk only widened. “Yes, but you seem to forget that one of us is ageing with grace, Miss Y/L/N.”
Your scowl deepened, and you shoved past him, making your way to the front of the store. You never did understand why Santiago didn’t like you. From the first moment you stepped into the department store, it seemed like he was trying to usher you out. Sure, when he thought you were a customer, he was the most charming man you’d ever spoken to. But once he had realized that you were trying to apply for the new salesperson position, he wanted nothing to do with you. He had insisted that there were no positions available, but Frankie Morales, his friend and co-worker, was quick to usher you to the owner’s office. Mr. Bailey had been a hard man to charm, but when you made your first sale to a woman who was insistent that she was just browsing, he hired you on the spot. After all, you’d gotten her to buy not one, not two, but five jars of various creams and lotions. None of Mr. Bailey’s workers had ever managed to sell that much in one go, not even his prized Mr. Garcia.
Making your way to the front of the store, you said hello and gave a kiss on the cheek to Frankie and each of the Miller brothers, Will and Benny. All three of the boys were quick to welcome you, despite Santi being the unspoken leader of the pack. They quickly became your protective band of brothers, something you’d long wished for as a young child.
“Good morning Frankie! How’s Elisa doing this morning?” You asked Frankie, your tone surprisingly chipper after dealing with Santi in the staff room.
“Round as ever!” Frankie exclaimed, a wide grin on his face. “The doctors estimate that the baby will be here in about a month, and Mr. Bailey’s been so kind as to let me have a month off after the baby arrives. I know it’s going to take a toll on Elisa, and I want to be there for her as much as I can.”
Sometimes, Frankie just melted your heart. It was so plain to see how much he loved his wife and their incoming baby. Their little family was everything you wanted. You only hoped that one day someone would love you just as much as Frankie and Elisa loved each other.
It was beginning to seem as though your Special Friend was never going to reveal himself to you. You had offered to meet for dinner on a few occasions, and each time he insisted that he had prior appointments. You didn’t want to assume anything, of course, but you were getting worried. Surely he wouldn’t lie to you about having a prior engagement, would he? But then, if he was so eager to meet you, as he claimed to be, then why did he never offer an alternative date?
On your way home from work, you stopped at the P.O. box. Your Special Friend had forgotten— or, well, neglected, you supposed— to write you the past two days, but you were adamant about writing at least every other day. You knew how much the letters meant to you, and if they brought him even half as much joy, you wanted to be sure he got it. Perhaps, if you hadn’t been so caught up in your own head, you would have looked up and seen the figure walking away from the wall of P.O. boxes.
To your surprise and delight, there was a letter waiting for you in the box when you finally opened it. If you hadn’t been so excited to read it, perhaps you’d have noticed the flash of a coat turning the corner as they walked away from the wall of boxes.
You hurried to open the letter.
Dear Friend,
I am so sorry to have not been able to write these past few days. Work has been an absolute train wreck, what with the most irritating co-worker constantly fumbling about. Somehow, the boss claims it’s my fault. Could you believe it? My fault that my imbecile of a co-worker is incapable of doing the simplest task that doesn’t involve talking a mile per minute?
But enough about that mess. I am supposed to be apologizing to you, my dear, sweet friend.
I know that you have been wanting to meet me. I am so sorry that I haven’t been able to make any of our appointments. As I’ve told you before, I was once in the army. An experience in war is one that I don’t wish on anyone. It takes a toll on you, emotionally, mentally, and physically. Because of my experience, I’ve decided to counsel other veterans and help them through their traumatic memories. On the nights you had wished to meet me, I’d had previously arranged counseling sessions, as well as one doctors appointment, a check up to see how I am recovering after all of my surgeries that I’ve told you about.
All of this to say, dear friend, that I’ve cleared my schedule for the night of the 27th. If you are available, I would love to meet you at the Ambrosia Garden down on the corner of 12th Avenue. I’ve made a reservation for two under the name Elizabeth Bennett, after you expressed how much you loved Jane Austen’s ‘Pride & Prejudice’. If you show, I will be wearing a purple rose on my lapel. I will look for you, where you will be holding a copy of ‘Pride & Prejudice’, with a purple rose tucked between the pages.
I sincerely hope to see you on the 27the, dear friend. I’ve been longing to meet you since we first exchanged letters, so many months ago.
Sincerely,
Your Special Friend
You had to meet him. You would get to the Ambrosia Garden on the 27th, no matter the cost. You’d find out who your Special Friend was if it was the last thing you did.
DREAMS -> Akaashi Keiji
Tumblr media
summary: a soulmate au where you see each other in your dreams.
pairing: akaashi keiji x gn!reader
word count: 3k
contains: angst, fluff, open-ended (also, if you guys spot instances where i specify gender, let me know and i’ll try to fix it asap! i edited this but sometimes, things just slip by)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
akaashi keiji thinks the world is cruel.
he swipes the dust off the leather bound book before carefully sliding it back into it’s alphabetized slot. he carefully maneuvers himself around the oak wooden shelves, letting his feet track footprints into the burgundy rug below him. with a sigh, he realizes he is yet again desolated. a library reverie dedicated solely to himself and his predestined soulmate. yet, it seemed the universe had yet chosen one quintessential for him. akaashi didn’t need perfect, but on some days, he just wanted to have someone.
the macrocosm was seemingly convinced he was unfit to wield one. strung on the idea that he was intolerable and unmatchable. akaashi’s pessimistic attitude had betrayed his hopeful one, and soon, he was unable to shield himself from the knowledge that perhaps-- there was no one in the world meant for him.
(he still desires one, because he’d love nothing more than to connect with the person who he was bound to meet. he wants to depict their love in unrealistic fairytales.)
nights go by where he falls asleep and lounges in his fantastical library. he decides he could write a book with all the time he has to himself. but then again, he knows better than anyone that most of his projects remain unfinished. he’s lost inspiration, captured by the nasty talons of writer’s block. he thinks he’s at the end of his rope, and for a second he believes it’s about time he goes down a different career path. but he doesn’t do that. mostly because he’s unsure, and partially because he’s still filled with hope.
(but when his soulmate never shows, he comes to realize that hope is a fickle thing.)
it's one random day of the week where akaashi’s schedule isn’t as rigid as it habitually is. after a long afternoon of practice (which doesn’t stray from the norm) he’s desperate for sleep, and despite knowing that taking a nap would complicate his circadian rhythm, he was rather desperate.
drifting towards the soulmate reality became a feat he was more than used too. the vertigo he commonly experienced was quick to depart as he molded into his surroundings, the familiar scent of paper musk and printed ink leaves much to be desired.
though, if there was one thing that was slightly unsettling— it was the disruption of books laid despotic on the floor. akaashi, though only sometimes forgetful, had never once committed such a polluted act. he was always careful to restore books to their proper position once concluded, so he wondered what possible entity could have disrupted the neat nature of his lonesome library.
(it’s when you round the corner that all his presumptions were answered.)
oh dear, he thinks, you’re a winsome mess. books pulled into your chest, pajama pants folded past your ankle, a tank top only doing so much as to cover your chest and stomach. your mouth is shaped into an ‘o’ as if his presence was the most stupefying thing around— when really, it was you.
(a book slips from your grasp, a reverberation follows shortly. he tries not to wince as it lands on its pages, folding the corner of the paper.)
the moment of shock is lost and your look of astonishment is replaced with mild skepticism. “who are you?” you ask, almost defiantly.
“akaashi,” he replies honestly, though the look on your face seems to morph in some sort of revelation that he can’t understand.
“say it again,” the stern tone of your voice lets him know that it wasn’t a mere request but a demand. he isn’t quite sure why you’re so on edge but because he already seems like the most rational one between the two of you, he doesn’t argue.
“my name is akaashi keiji,” he repeats himself, his concern only multiplied by the sting of comprehension creased into the sight wrinkles of your face. a part of him truly understands the circumstance before him, though a portion of him doesn’t want to give into the naïveté— because for so long, he was cursed with the belief that he didn’t deserve a soulmate.
“your words keep getting… blurred,” you tried your best to explain, though no matter how detailed your explanation, the experience couldn’t be put into perfect words. “you know what that means… don’t you?”
of course he knows. on days where he thought his life was the one exception— he researched every story about soulmates as he possibly could. some were undoubtedly fake, others were heartwarming, but the one common piece of information he stumbled upon was that soulmates couldn’t hear personal information about the other whilst in their dream world. perhaps to prevent early encounters or just to make the process seemingly endless; either way, akaashi was well aware.
“i didn’t think i had a soulmate,” he lets his guard down decently low, though the flutter in his heart alerts him that it’s all going to come crashing down eventually.
“neither did i,” you admit, placing down the books wrapped in your arms onto the floor. he wants to question what you could possibly be doing, but there’s more alarming inquiries he needs answers too.
good thing you seem just as eager to figure out why today was any different. “did you do anything today that might’ve been different from your usual routine? i went to bed at eleven… which isn’t any different from any other day.”
that’s when it hit akaashi— the answer was so obvious. “we live in different time zones. that’s the only reason i can think of…”
he trailed off, having been caught in the most frustrating loop of incredulity. all this time… you were right there… so close yet so far. the only thing that had separated his years of getting to know you was a different sleep schedule. in due time, he may look back at this incident and laugh— but right now, he felt cheated out of the most basic human experience ever.
(like a story, this was only the rising action— or perhaps the exposition, because this was truly the start of something new.)
he wants to speak, to reach out and connect with you in all the ways he’s only wished to do, but your harmonious laugh distracts him from his thoughts. “i never understood why my soulmate reality was a library. i guess that’s because of you, right?”
he doesn’t understand your change in personality in the same way he can’t tell when bokuto’s in a bad mood until it’s happening right before his eyes (though others would beg to differ). he’s desperate to learn everything there was to know about you— most importantly, your name. It’s the only thing he wants to know.
instead, he settles on, “what are you doing with those books?”
it’s obvious you weren’t expecting that question, but then again, how was akaashi supposed to ignore the books you're defiling by simply letting them scatter on the floor?
with a shy giggle, you respond, “well… since i thought i was alone, i was going to make a huge fort with them… ya know, cause i'm not much of a reader.”
from the red tint of your cheeks to the way your head was slightly tilted to the left was surefire proof of your discombobulation. and to akaashi, it seemed to hold such a power over him that he was unable to keep check his usual deportments. screw etiquette! this wasn’t even reality!
“i’ll help you build one,” he offers, picking up a book from the ground. he runs his thumb over the edges, smoothly out the wrinkles that had surfaced.
your head perks up, an opulent grin painting the once grimace. “really?!”
(for a smile like yours, he’d do just about anything to safeguard it’s fluoresce.)
back in the real world, all day his thoughts are occupied with you. you exist, your real, somewhere out in the world, your waiting for him. it’s a condolement he’s not willing to gamble with. he finds himself wanting to take more naps, just for the chance to indulge in another conversation with you. of course, it meant the eye bags under his eyes had sunken into a deeper shade— not noticeable to anyone that wasn’t him, and considering the effect it had on his everyday appearance, he’s come to the conclusion that it’d be nearly impossible to visit you every day of the week. it wouldn’t stop him from trying though.
from the side of the volleyball court, kuroo nudges bokuto skeptically. “what’s with that look on akaashi’s face… it’s starting to freak me out.”
bokuto hums— in approval? in contempt? who knows, but he’s happy. “he told me he finally met his soulmate. he’s just excited!”
“ah,” kuroo clicks his tongue knowingly, “i thought he didn’t have one?”
“turns out, they just go to sleep and wake up at different times. konoha thought it was pretty funny,” bokuto relayed, a chuckle bubbling under his throat. for so long, he had witnessed akaashi’s self-doubt and insecurity, and while parts of them still existed, it seemed to be slowly resolving itself. he couldn’t be more happier for his best friend.
“well, tell him to start focusing, i want to beat you guys when you’re at your best,” kuroo smirked, narrowing his gaze onto bokuto.
“you’re so on!”
(for the rest of practice, they had to endure akaashi’s love-sick gaze. fukurōdani still won.)
a month had passed since your very first interaction together. getting to know each other was more laborious than first intended. some words remained blurred, preventing the other from learning anything that might accelerate the rate of introduction in the real world. akaashi just wanted to know your name. it’s how he came to learn that while the universe was giving, it was also relentless.
“hey! i've been waiting for you, you know! i want to show you something!” you call from under the makeshift book fort. having just arrived, he knows from this point on, he has around thirty minutes before he’s awoken for dinner.
thirty minutes, four times a week— the only times he’s ever been able to talk to you, due to the tight schedule you both live in. it’s too little, too small, and he feels selfish for wanting more.
crawling under the fort, he pushed himself up to the side, wanting to give you as much room as possible in the cramped spot. in your hands, you have a book— it’s thin, meant for children, pages that combine to tell a moral. when you hand it over, it takes him less than a second to deduce the story and it’s plot. not because he’s some genius who had read every book on the face of the earth but because this story was rather popular in other parts of the world.
“sleeping beauty,” he reads aloud. his fingers run over the cover, trying to mentally depict what could be so important about this story that had you desperately trying to show him.
“it’s one of my favorite stories,” you sigh, propping your elbow on top of your thigh, leaning the weight of your face on your dominant hand. “my grandma used to read it to me all the time.”
oh. oh. you’re not asking what he thinks you're asking? right?
“can you read it to me, please?”
you are asking. his heart beats against the tightness of his chest, his ribs feel a tad out of place. and he knows— soulmates or not, he was utterly and completely yours. his cheeks flame and he attempts to hide it under his shirt.
“are you blushing?” you ask, and he can practically feel the teasing grin on your lips.
“no,” he mutters.
you shuffle from your spot and coincidentally; tower over him. your hands and legs trap his body under your presence. you’d practically be touching him if the soulmate reality allowed you too. akaashi finds that to be the greatest travesty of them all. even though it’s practically impossible, he can feel your warmth radiate around him as if you were actually there.
“does that mean you’ll read to me?” you ask, the battering of your eyelashes ever so visible. he doesn’t understand how you came to that conclusion, but it only tells him you knew exactly how’d he’d answer before he did.
“i’ll read it to you… just don’t laugh, okay?” akaashi opened the book, flipping the white picture-pages until he had reached the first chapter. you giggle, obeying his request with much hypocritism. you moved to sit beside him, leaning just a bit aways over his shoulder to follow along.
(akaashi isn’t a prince, but he’s more than willing to be yours if you asked.)
“i’m moving… so who knows? maybe we might meet in person one of these days,” you declare. It’s been an entire year now since he’s met you and it’s safe to say he’s utterly whipped. now in his second year of high school, he thinks he’s gotten to know you well enough to the point where the only thing left to learn is your name.
(what’s your name??)
“you’re moving? above or below the equator?” he jokes.
luckily, you laugh-- knowing that there really isn’t much you can say without your words becoming a blurred mess. “i’m still above the equator, loser. actually, if we’re going to get really specific— i’d say the northern hemisphere.”
you guys laugh at your puny attempt of a joke. really, you know it meant no difference, and the fact that you can only rely on fate to carry you through is pitying to say the least.
“i can’t wait to meet you,” akaashi declares honestly, pulling on his fingers in habit. he wants to say more, anything that remotely rhymes with i love you, but he wants to save that special moment for the day he meets you. he knows more than anything that you’re waiting for the same.
“i can’t wait either— honestly, i think my mom might be more excited than i am. i talk about you all the time, you know?” you softly lean against your book fort, your eyes as happy looking as your smile.
(yeah, it’s safe to say he can’t wait.)
akaashi and writer’s block do not coexist peacefully.
struggling to find words to replace the repetition created on pages, desperately searching for a means of inspiration-- he’s awfully close to giving up.
with a huge essay due tomorrow and a huge game he can’t afford to lose on the same day, he stresses over the fact that he may not be able to put his one-hundred-percent effort into both. even in the middle of a library (he should note: in the real world), a place where solitude was absolute, it provided no peace of mind.
it’s only when a small child, no older than five, wobbles out of the kid’s section with a copy of sleeping beauty, that akaashi’s reminded of you. with a small smile, he calms himself down. after all, you are his greatest muse.
(you’d probably laugh in his face if he told you that.)
after moving away from your hometown, which wasn’t quite as jarring as you expected it to be, you were quick to make friends. you wouldn’t call yourself a social butterfly— but contrary to most teen dramas, new students weren’t ‘fresh meat’ ready for the picking. finding a comfortable group of people you could associate yourself with, you found that most of them were volleyball fanatics (not because they actually played the sport, but because there were a lot of cute boys on the teams around the area, or so they say). either way, going to one of the games was inevitable. like a sort of inauguration you had to go through if you truly wanted to be considered part of the group.
you wouldn’t have it any other way.
after all, akaashi plays volleyball— that much you knew. the team name couldn’t be said, but at least you knew the sport he associated himself with. although he wouldn’t admit it, he was good, his team was good; after all, they made it to nationals and that was more than enough substantial proof. and while you didn’t want to get your hopes up, you were going to watch the national matches. you wondered… could this be the day?
walking up to the main arena, there was a certain ponderosity in the air that you couldn’t describe. it was as if a crushing truth was about to fall on your shoulders, and not knowing where it was about to fall from— you felt a crawling chill.
at the same time, akaashi had just finished the first game of the nationals match, split between wanting to rest or attend to bokuto’s high spirits. he’s attempting to walk into the main arena to watch the karasuno vs inarizaki match, but with his team basically surrounding him in their own attempts to make their way through— he deems the effort fruitless.
just as he approaches the door, so do you.
but you're too busy keeping up with your friends.
and he’s too busy trying to squeeze past a ranting bokuto.
your hands graze each other’s, and simultaneously, you both receive a shock that runs down the basis of your spines. something prompted him to search for the cause of the odd feeling, and in that moment, he finds you. your back is faced towards him, your hair made no difference in the immediate recognition process-- but he’s sure that he’s met you before. he just knows it. the answer is on the tip of his tongue, a fraction of a second away from being revealed.
he watches as your friends wait up for you, before your social circle turns around the corner and disappears from his sight (he gets hit with a strong sense of nostalgia from that). his heart stings, for reasons he can’t quite place. he’s never been too good at distinguishing his feelings anyways. bokuto is ushering him towards the stadium seating area, and the answer once on akaashi’s mind had dissipated into the air.
once he turns the corner, the moment is forgotten.
it’s only when he falls asleep later that night, not having dreamed of you, that it dawns on him.
akaashi keiji thinks the world is cruel.
“Okay, there is no way this guy isn’t on drugs”, Joo-Won snorts as he jokingly nudges your shoulder. You can’t help but chuckle, eyes trained on the maknae… smiling radiantly in the camera. It’s such a striking contrast to his rude stone-faced smirk the day before. Of course, Joo-Won would notice.
Hell, you don’t even want to imagine the fansites and all the twitter threats dedicated to the youngest’s mood shifts. Jungkook’s eyes sparkle and his steps are light as feathers. He has such a carefree aura surrounding him – it’s enticing.
To clear your head, you take a hefty swing of the beer your friend has sneaked into the backstage-room. It was sheer luck that you met up – with your phone mysteriously vanishing and you no longer working at the booth. But it seems your … promotion was the gossip of the whole pre-concert team, so of course Joo-Won was up-to-date.
It’s not that uncommon to help out during tour, when there’s a shortage of employees. For you to move this far up in such a short time? Okay, granted, that does raise a few questions. But after your explanation, your friend was convinced, that everything was fine and dandy. When in reality…
“Or maybe he just got laid”, he shrugs, and you cough on the alcohol in your mouth.
“Damn… Woo… Why?”, you wheeze, and your friend tries not to laugh at your red face.
“Oh come on, don’t be a prude.”
“I am not”, you defend yourself, taking another sip to calm your body. The alcohol Joo-Won provided, after finding you starstruck in a dimly lit corridor, helped you getting over the fact, that sweet summer-child Jimin was a shadow. The thought alone makes you empty your bottle.
“Maybe this would be more believable, when your face doesn’t look like a tomato”, he teases and you are glad that color is returning to your face. After last night’s blood loss, every form of healthy blood flow makes you think of yesterday’s attack as a smaller incident than it was.
“Argh, stop it, Woo”, you say, punching his arm in mock anger. You two stay like this, glued to the screen and watch the concert. All the idols seem to be in great spirit – joking amongst themselves and performing to their full capacity.
It makes you wish to erase the last hours – meeting most of them in terrifying situations. Their music means a lot to you and now it will forever be tarnished by the blood and secrets spilled in the last hours.
“Want another one?”, your friend asks, after the concert finished and the people around you are again running around, packing up. Tonight, you’ll have dinner with seven vampires.
“Of course”, you answer.
***
“_____-ah!”, Jimin’s voice is extremely familiar from the hours of Spotify-loops you listened to during their last comeback. But the sweet voice is way too near and way too authentic to be coming out of your nonexistent earbuds. You turn around, the beer bottle in your guilty hands as you see the singer running towards you. His steps are es excited as his exclaim and you brace yourself for impact, his sweaty body colliding with you in no time.
The embrace feels alien, his figure roughly the same height as yours – his nose brushing against your own, warm, sweet breath meeting your skin. Wow. Jimin seems to feel way too comfortable around you for your first meeting. Well, if you count getting introduced to his shadow as well, it’ll be your second meeting. But still, invading your personal space so carefree makes your heart race. He smells so amazing, you’re not even bothered by his sweat against your brand new clothes.
“Jimin-ssi”, warns a hard voice behind him and your stare meets Taehyung’s cold eyes. They don’t stay on you for long, fixing on something behind you instead. If it’s even possible, his eyes defrost more. You remember your friend exactly at the same time Jimin’s soft embrace morphs into an uncomfortable grip. You try to turn around, but the idol doesn’t let you move an inch.
“Who are you?”, he asks. The air feels cold against your skin as a shudder travels across your body.
“Uhm, Joo-Won”, there is a short silence, “I... manage the lightstick booth.”
“I don’t see any ARMY bombs here, Joo-Won”, Taehyung answers, stepping closer to the three of you. You can clearly hear the stern tone in the way he pronounces the stranger’s name. What you can’t hear, are the profanities and treats coming out of the vampire’s mouth – too low for human ears to detect.
“Uhm, Jimin-ssi?”, you ask, awkwardness coloring your question as you – again – try to move out of his embrace.
He complies wordlessly, but doesn’t let you get far away, an arm draped around your shoulder is keeping you in place – by his side. Now you see Joo-Won’s eyes screaming for help and you feel an instant guilt resting in your stomach.
“Joo-Won is a... friend of mine", you start to explain - missing the hissed not for long as you gesture nervously around the boys. Your movement shifts Jimin’s arm from your shoulder blade to your neck and you feel his fingers flex against your skin.
Taehyung has fully joined you, having moved to your other side. Both idols flank your figure almost protectively. It’s... weirdly exciting.
“Is that so?”, the deep-voiced asks and... offers your friend his hand. Joo-Won looks at Taehyung’s offer like he has never heard of shaking hands. Before the silence gets out of control though, he grasps his hand. The lights flicker as you see Joo-Won wince in pain. What the hell?
A sickening ash complexion travels up his outstretched arm and you panic. What is Taehyung doing? In two quick steps you manage to break the handshake by moving between them. Jimin seems too enthralled by his bandmate and lets you out of his hold by accident. Now you turn your back against Joo-Won, facing the adored duo of Vmin, while shielding your friend.
“You’re here to get me for the work dinner, right?”, you say with more meaning behind your words. Both look at you with an unreadable expression. Then they nod, as if they just remember where and who they are.
“So... let’s go!” You step around both of them and head towards the exit, not even daring to turn around. The sound of hurried footsteps confirms, that both idols are following you. If you had known it’d be the last time you ever saw your friend, you might have turned around to memorize his handsome face.
***
“Where are we going?”, you ask as the two vampires hush you into the tinted van. They sit facing you and spread their legs comfortably. Taehyung’s shoes rest against your feet and his face looks so relaxed, you wish he could lend you some calm.
“To our hotel”, Taehyung answers. Jimin adds: “They have an amazing cook.”
“And a private room”, Taehyung finishes.
They do complete each other in a harmonized way, that makes you feel... very excluded.
Your hands are resting in your lap and you watch the car drive away from the concert hall. Two more events, then you’ll leave. You remember that the group stays in one of the most prestigious hotels of Tokyo. A stark contrast to your hostel. And far away from it as well. It´ll be a pain in the ass to get back later. Especially without a room key, or even a cellphone.
“Do you guys happen to know, where my cell and my key card is?”, you ask and look in the eyes of a smiling Jimin.
“Oh, Gug should have them with him.”
Yeah right, Jungkook should be there. The vampire, who sucked your blood last night. Cool, cool, cool, co-
“What do they say, ______? They are more afraid of you as you are of them”, Taehyung says reassuringly.
“That’s what people say about animals – not vampires”, you snort.
“Some say our kin is more animal than human, so...”, Taehyung shrugs and you muster him curiously.
“And what do you say?", you ask.
“Ah, don't get philosophical on our first date, _________”, Jimin whines and you do not even want to think about the word “date”. Instead you still look at the younger singer. He seems to be conflicted, before answering.
“It’s more of a balance. And sometimes it’s... more fun to agree with these people.”
You don't like the way he thinks, always believing that humanity is the only solution to live in content.
“There we are!”, both boys exclaim at the same time and you shrink in surprise. Are these two for real?
Without missing a second, Jimin opens the car door, and motions for you to step out of the vehicle. With one hand he covers his face with a mask, and you do the same. It would be more practical for him to get out first. Then you would have more room to move. But he is still as stone, as you stumble out of the car, brushing against his rumbling chest in the process.
You are at the back entrance of the five-star hotel and you can see the open door with a fidgeting waiter. After a few quick steps and two vampires behind you, you enter the building. The young staff member bows formally and you do the same – both idols not even thinking about returning the greeting. So, the good manners are just for vlives – good to know.
Soon you step into the private dining room, the air thick with anticipation as you make eye contact with the maknae. His exciting body moves at lightning speed and you are glad the waiter stepped out of eye side. For the second time today, you collide with a strong body. Jungkook’s nose dives instantly to the crook of your neck and you feel his hot breath against your earlobe.
“_________”, he murmurs and lets his nose travel up and down your pulse. You shiver in response, the recurring invasion of your private space making you feel terribly uncomfortable. Flashes of last night, the pain, the helplessness, the fear... all emotions are rushing back to you and you feel tears in your eyes.
“Jungkook. Enough”, Jin commands and the youngster whines, not moving.
“Jungkook”, the eldest tries again, this time with more volume to his voice.
Before a tear can fall, the vampire lets you go and takes a step back. His excitement crumbles when he sees the unshed tears in your eyes.
“_________?”, he asks, and your name sounds starkly different to the first time he happily called you mere moments ago.
You take a deep breath and you think you're losing your sanity, because you swear you can ... smell them. The odor doesn’t even scare you; it’s weirdly calming. With two more breaths of air you feel grounded enough to let your eyes travel across the table.
There they all sit. Jin – half standing, ready to intervene. Namjoon is watching you closely, is expression full of curiosity. Then there are Hoseok and Yoongi. The duo looks at you... in disdain. The younger rapper with rumored sunshine in his heart musters you like you are a cloud, hiding the bright orbit behind you.
And Yoongi’s eyes are filled with... dissatisfaction. You don’t need to be a mind reader to basically hear his scream “YOU DUMB HUMAN!”. Yeah, you didn’t follow his orders. But how could you not agree to Namjoon’s offer? You don’t even have to do a thing; just be there. But as you feel seven sets of inhumane eyes on you, you’re not sure, if this is really easy money.
“Alcohol!”, Jimin shouts behind you, making you jump in place. Damn, the two singers move with leisure steps forward; pushing you to the group, cold hands against your back.
Jungkook jumps away from you, creating more distance as his sad eyes linger. Why is he so upset? What did he expect? He attacked you not even twenty-four hours ago. How fast were you supposed to overcome such trauma? His bite under the band-aid burns as you self-consciously take a seat next to Jin. No way in hell will you sit next to Hoseok or Yoongi; it’s easier to face your opponents than rub against their side while eating. Before you are fully seated, you feel Jungkook take the place on your other side.
You eye him with suspicion, but the young man looks at you with big, innocent deer eyes, you can’t begin to compare him to the vampire version of last night. Maybe it’s for the best if you don’t even try. You are only here, getting paid handsomely, because of this boy. You are the leftover he needs around.
“Is that okay, Noona?”, he whispers as he – again – leans close to you. You shiver; this time not in fear, as you nod silently. Across from you Hoseok chuckles humorlessly. You ignore the blunt mockery and look at Namjoon for any form of leadership. He still just observes, now focused on the youngest as Jungkook smiles. You accepted him next to you. And he can’t smell fear on you anymore – maybe a bit apprehension, but no fear. He is getting even more excited now that your warmth radiates against his cold, dead body.
“Uhm – … did you mention alcohol?”, you ask, no longer able to stomach the thick silence. Jimin, sitting next to Taehyung, laughs freely as he brings out a few unopened soju bottles from under the table. With ease the young singer moves your favorite – strawberry flavor – in front of you and you thank him with a kind smile.
The others soon join, Hoseok being the only one without a fresh bottle, still managing half of his last one.
“It seems this isn’t your first today”, Yoongi comments, cold eyes on you as your cheeks redden – making Jungkook groan in satisfaction.
Is your drinking with Joo-Won this noticeable? You hold your alcohol well, and you are sure you didn’t stumble or slur in the last ten minutes, so how c-
“It’s your breath”, Namjoon explains unsolicited. A hand flies to your mouth. They… can smell the alcohol in your breath? How? You chewed gum before Taehyung and Jimin collected you.
“We have a heightened smell”, he adds, “all our senses are improved.”
“That makes concerts extremely fun”, Jimin says toasting his bottle in your direction. “The lights, the screams, the sweat and all the blood-bags in a stadium – it’s intoxicating.”
Your eyes widen at being called a blood bag. But before you can voice being offended, Yoongi repeats his question, rephrased.
“You pre-game, when you know you have dinner with seven vampires?” There is belittlement in his voice and you feel shame.
In your college days it wasn’t unusual to participate in daydrinking, or just an after-lecture beer. But now – faced with idols, who performed relentlessly for hours in tiering conditions – it makes you feel cheap. And watching the sadistic pleasure in Yoongi’s eyes makes you think, that this is exactly what he wants.
“I- it was just a drink with a friend”, you defend yourself and don’t notice, how the movement in the room stills.
“What friend?”, Namjoon asks icily, as he freezes your time, while looking at Taehyung and Jimin.
“A low leveled booth worker was all around her, when we found her”, Jimin starts and tries not to move too much, so you won’t get a whiplash when being in sync again.
“I took care of him”, Taehyung finishes and takes a swing from his non-alcoholic beer. He didn’t like alcohol when he was alive and he sure as hell doesn’t care for the intoxication now that he is dead. But that doesn’t mean the vampire doesn’t adore Jimin’s drunk stumbles and Jungkook’s alcohol infused exhibition.
Every single vampire at the table knows what the vocalist means with his words. The uncontrolled power to extract life-light through touch equals a disaster. But after many years of training Taehyung can control and dosage his ability to… everybody’s benefit. Joo-Won will be weak, ill and even thinking he wants to die. But the few seconds of power extraction wasn’t meant to kill – it was meant as a warning.
“Did anything else happen to her while you were supposed to look after her?”, Jungkook hisses sarcastically and looks at his brothers. Both avoid the venom in his eyes.
“If you can’t remember, we were actually with you on stage during the concert. How could we control her whereabouts, when we were hip-thrusting next to you? Hm?”, Jimin responds and the room fills with confrontation. Jin shifts uncomfortably in his seat – the emotions in high drive from his brothers. He is very thankful that the leader froze you, otherwise he couldn’t manage all the feelings in this group.
Jungkook stands abruptly, ready to pounce on the smallest.
“If you had let me keep her with me, this conversation wouldn’t even happen.”
“Ha”, Yoongi laughs darkly, “If we had left you with her, you’d be sucking her nipples by now.”
The lights flicker and Namjoon – again – just observes instead of intervening.
Hoseok moves suddenly, circling around the table until he stands directly behind your still form. He stares at you with dark curiosity.
What the hell where you doing with them? What could be so fascinating about you to make Jungkook this mad at Jimin and Taehyung? What made Yoongi leave his bed last night?
Why isn’t Namjoon stepping up as leader? Why can’t Jin control the room?
Why is he standing behind you? Why is he bending down to your face? Why is he craning his neck to face you – supporting himself with a hand on the table? Why are your eyes deeper than his desire to eliminate you as the thread you are?
And most importantly: Why are you blinking at him?
“What the hell?”, Namjoon and you exclaim at the same time as you stare at Hoseok’s surprised eyes, which are closer than logic would permit.
Richie and Eddie lay in Richie’s bed, both of their faces in their phones as they lie next to each other in comfortable silence. Eddie goes back and forth between different games and social media apps, he’s lost in profound thought when Richie sits up suddenly and looks at Eddie with a wide and somewhat sinister smile. Eddie gives Richie a strange look in return.
“Oh god, what?” Eddie groans as he props himself up on his elbows, Riche’s facial expressions drooping to an unimpressed frown.
“Why do you always say that?” Richie crosses his arms, furrowing his brows. Eddie sighs in frustration.
“I don’t know, Richie?!” he huffs. “We’re lying here all nice and calm, then you sit up like you’re possessed and give me a creepy fucking smile!” Eddie sits up from his elbows to crisscrossed. Richie rolls his eyes playfully and snickers.
“Well I had an idea…” Richie trails off in a singsong like tone. Eddie is the one with furrowed brows now.
“And what is it?” Eddie grows slightly anxious.
“Well, you know how you’re gay and I’m bi…” Eddie tilts his head in confusion at Richie’s words. “What I’m trying to say is that you’ve never done anything with boys and I only have experience with girls, so, I was thinking, maybe we could do it together?” Richie flashes a nervous smile. It takes Eddie a few seconds before he realizes what Richie’s asking.
“Oh?” Eddie asks in initial shock, still trying to process Richie’s question. “Oh,” he says again, this time in a shy tone, cheeks flushing pink as reality sets in. Eddie falls silent for a couple moments before nodding his head. “Y-yeah, why not?” he shrugs his shoulders as butterflies swarm his stomach. Richie’s face lights up, not thinking Eddie would go through with the idea. “But…” Eddie adds.
“But what?” Richie scoots back a bit, starting to worry that maybe he’s pressured Eddie into this.
“What is this going to mean for us?” Eddie gnaws at his lower lip, the butterflies pounding harder at his stomach.
“Well, it doesn’t have to mean anything if we’re just doing it for practice.” Richie says, shrugging his shoulders as he tries to keep his cool. He doesn’t want Eddie to see right through his act...
“Yeah, right.” Eddie forces a grin. Really, he wanted Richie to say that it could maybe mean something to him, but he knows it won’t. Eddie shakes it off as best he can knowing Richie will never feel the same way in return.
Richie smiles back, looking Eddie up and down before he grabs his hips gently and pulls him into his lap. Eddie’s blushing from cheeks to ears as Richie stares the other deep in his eyes. Eddie wraps his arms around Richie’s neck as he bats his eyes sheepishly. Richie reaches up one of his hands, his thumb landing on Eddie’s lower lip, dragging it across.
“If it hurts too much, you tell me and I’ll stop, okay?” Richie’s voice is low and husky, but his words are sugary and sincere.
“Okay,” Eddie whispers, his nerves rushing through his veins now. Richie takes his thumb away and connects his lips with Eddie’s gently. Eddie can’t help but sigh into the kiss, thinking ‘finally’.
The kiss is slow and gentle at first, lips moving in sync before Richie licks at Eddie’s bottom lip, asking for entrance. Eddie immediately submits to Richie and opens his mouth for him. Richie explores Eddie as his grip grows tighter on the other’s hips, making him rock them. Eddie gasps slightly as he grinds against Richie, Richie chuckling against Eddie’s lips as he breaks the kiss and helps Eddie rock a bit faster. After a few moments, Eddie gains enough courage to do it by himself.
“There you go,” Richie says softly. “Good boy.” he praises.
Eddie is still feeling bashful, the nerves never ceasing or dissipating. He starts moving his hips faster, letting out soft moans and weak whimpers as Richie muffles them with his own lips. At this point, Eddie gets lost in his desperate pleasure, bucking his hips wildly as his moans and huffs echo throughout the room.
Richie watches Eddie through half-lidded eyes, finding his desperate noises inviting. Richie’s hands slide from Eddie’s hips and to his inner thighs, taking Eddie off his lap and laying him down on his back. Eddie’s heart starts pounding in his chest, the beating so loud he swears Richie can hear it too.
Richie crashes his lips back onto Eddie’s, Eddie startled at first since he wasn’t expecting it. He returns the kiss, wrapping his arms around Richie’s neck as Richie traps Eddie’s body under him. He swiftly slides his tongue back inside Eddie’s mouth, Eddie letting out a soft moan as he melts at Richie’s rough kisses and light touches. Richie starts peppering kisses along Eddie’s jaw and down his neck, causing more pleased sighs to escape past Eddie’s lips. Richie slides his hands up and under his shirt, stroking the soft skin of his torso before pulling it over Eddie’s head and lets it fall to the floor. Eddie is blushing yet again, causing Richie to chuckle.
“You blushing is quite adorable,” Richie smirks, peering down at the other.
“Oh, shut up.” Eddie’s voice is soft and the least bit threatening, making Richie to chuckle even more.
“Oh, you scare me so much.” Richie’s words are coated with sarcasm as he grinds hard against Eddie. Eddie lets out a gasp, completely forgetting his terrible comeback that he had prepared. Richie then presses more gentle kisses to Eddie’s neck that then travel down to his collarbones where Richie sucks dark purple bruises. No one on the outside will be able to see, but when Eddie is alone and undressed, he’ll be reminded that what he and Richie did was real, and that drives Richie wild.
Once Richie is satisfied, he paves a path with more kisses down Eddie’s middle before stopping at the waistband of Eddie’s jeans. Eddie’s eyes shift downcast, glancing at Richie as Richie’s smirk grows wider. Eddie’s anxiety and nerves morph into excitement and pure arousal, and it’s showing in Eddie’s jeans.
“Eager?” Richie bites his lip, forcing back his laughter.
“Maybe,” Eddie says shyly. Richie hums as he pops the button on Eddie’s jeans then pulls down his zipper. Richie hooks his thumbs in the beltloops before yanking them down the other’s legs. Eddie helps kick them off and Richie takes no time to take Eddie’s boxers off as well.
“Fuck,” Richie moans at the sight of him, unable to keep his hands off of him. Richie runs his hands down Eddie’s soft, slightly tanned skin. Eddie closes his eyes, letting out soft whines, about to get lost in Richie’s touch again until he opens his eyes and sees that Richie is still fully clothed.
“Well?” Eddie asks, raising an eyebrow.
“Well, what?” Richie asks, his facial expressions mimicking Eddie’s.
“Why am I the only one that’s naked?” Eddie pouts. Richie eyes him over, humming to himself.
“I don’t know, but I sure like it.” Richie practically purrs. Eddie furrows his brows, grabbing Richie by the collar of his shirt and pulls him down, their faces inches apart.
“Please?” Eddie begs softly.
“Only because you asked so nicely,” Richie gives Eddie a quick peck on the lips. He takes off his shirt, lets it fall to the floor next to Eddie’s. A smile forms its way on Eddie’s lips as he runs his hands down Richie’s arms.
“Pants too,” Eddie tries to demand, tugging at Richie’s jeans.
“Patience,” Richie’s voice is stern, causing Eddie to fall silent.
He takes Eddie’s hard cock into his hands and starts to pump him slowly. Eddie throws his head back, slamming into the pillows. He bites his lip as he arches his back, eyes rolling shut as he lets out the loudest moan yet. Richie takes in every second of this moment. Seeing how beautiful Eddie looks like this and Richie wishes that he could vocalize this. Richie starts pumping Eddie harder and faster, his own jeans growing to tight. Richie works up Eddie more, pumping him so fast that Eddie’s moans are soundless. And as Eddie is about to cum, Richie pulls his hand away.
“Fuck!” Eddie gasps out once he’s able to find his breath. “Why’d you stop?” he asks as he opens his eyes.
“Because I don’t want you to cum yet,” Richie says, his tone dripping with dark lust. Richie finally takes his own jeans and boxers off, leaving them both naked. Eddie can’t help but land his eyes on Richie’s cock, noticing how large he is, Eddie wonders how Richie will be able to fit inside of him. His eyes then shift back up to meet Richie’s gaze.
“Y-you’re big,” Eddie’s blushing yet again. “I’m a little nervous…” Eddie admits, his heart beating so fast he can feel it in his throat.
“It’s okay,” Richie lets out a heavy breath. “I am too.” he admits honestly. Hearing that makes Eddie feel a lot better, knowing that Richie is just as nervous as he is.
Richie smiles, kissing Eddie briefly before he grabs the lube from his bedside drawer. He opens it and coats his fingers. Richie spreads Eddie’s legs wide as he settles between them before he circles his finger around Eddie’s entrance.
“Again, if it hurts too much you tell me and I’ll stop, okay?” Richie reminds the other, because the last thing on earth that Richie wants is to hurt Eddie.
“Okay,” Eddie says with a nod of his head, grabbing the back of Richie’s neck and smashing their lips together. Richie smiles into the kiss, slowly pressing his finger inside of Eddie. He’s trying to remember all the things he’s read about over time, wanting to make it feel good for both him and Eddie.
Eddie exhales heavily, feeling Richie’s finger inside of him. Richie keeps his lips attached to Eddie’s, waiting a few seconds before he starts slowly pumping his finger. Eddie opens his eyes, spreading his legs wider as he starts to get used to the feeling of Richie’s finger inside of him, starting to feel delightful.
Richie breaks the kiss, pumping his finger before he adds a second one, pausing as he lets Eddie adjust. Their eyes gaze deep into each other until Eddie is ready for Richie to move his fingers again. Richie pumps his fingers slowly, stroking Eddie’s walls. Eddie starts squirming and squealing, Richie having to take his other hand to pin down Eddie’s hips, holding him still as he works his fingers inside him.
“Please, another.” Eddie begs, tears starting to form in his eyes from pure gratification.
“Fuck,” Richie moans at Eddie’s pleads. He nods and adds a third finger, Eddie wincing as he feels Richie’s thick fingers stretching him open. “Does it hurt?” Richie asks, about ready to pull his fingers out.
“It’s just a little uncomfortable, but I’m okay, I don’t want you to stop.” Eddie admits quietly.
“Okay,” Richie says, stealing another kiss from Eddie’s lips until he nods his head, letting Richie know he can move again. Richie starts moving his fingers, Eddie trying to squirm more but is still trapped by Richie’s hand that’s pinned on his hip.
“R-Rich-” Eddie is cut off by his own moans, arching his back as his hands grip at Richie’s shoulders, his nails digging into his skin. Richie spreads his fingers apart a bit, really trying to work Eddie open. “Fuck- fuck! Richie!” Eddie lets out a loud mewl, feeling like he’s close again and Richie stops, pulling out his fingers slowly. Richie wants to tell Eddie how beautiful he looks… How he loves him…
“Again?!” Eddie groans out, slamming his head back into the pillows in frustration.
“I want to cum with you,” Richie nearly growls, grabbing Eddie and yanking him down so that Richie’s cock is lined up perfectly with Eddie’s entrance. Eddie’s cheeks turn cherry red, Richie lubing up his length before teasing Eddie’s hole, making him plead and beg again.
Richie complies and starts pushing himself inside of Eddie. Eddie tenses up a bit which makes Richie stop. Eddie tells him not to, so Richie keeps going until he’s balls deep then stops, making Eddie adjust even though he’s desperate and so is Eddie. Eddie takes a few deep breaths as he relaxes as much as he can. Richie pulls back and thrusts gently back inside of him.
“Oh fuck, fuck, Richie!” Eddie drags his nails down Richie’s back, making him hiss. Richie thrusts in a bit harder, moaning for the first time that night, sounding like music to Eddie’s ears.
“Shit, Eds.” Richie breathes heavily as he starts to gain a steady rhythm, the two locking eyes as the only thing that’s breaking the silence is their deep and high moans.
Eddie wraps his legs around Richie’s waist, Richie’s hands running all along Eddie’s body, Eddie’s fingers wrapped in Richie’s dark curls. Richie picks up speed again, starting to feel closer and closer to his climax as Eddie tightens around him each time Richie strikes the other’s sweet spot. Richie’s about to cum when he stops himself, Eddie about to scream out in irritation.
“Richie,” Eddie exhales heavily. “Why do you keep stopping?”
“I-I can’t… I’m sorry, Eds, I just really can’t...” Richie is about to pull out when Eddie stops him.
“What the hell are you talking about?” Eddie speaks as he tries to catch his breath. “Why are we doing this then? You’re making me so fucking confused!” Richie sighs before deciding to tell the truth.
“I wanted to do this because… I like you, I’m in love with you... And I wanted to do this because, well, I can’t imagine myself doing it with anyone else but you.” Richie’s gaze falls to the floor, unable to look Eddie in the eyes.
“What?” Eddie asks confused, not really believing what he’s hearing as he stays hushed, trying to process everything.
“I just fucked this all up, didn’t I?” Richie breaks the silence, starting to feel embarrassed and ashamed.
“No, no!” Eddie says quickly, making Richie look at him. “I… I’m in love with you too.” Richie then looks back at Eddie, unable to hold back his laughter.
“You’re lying,” Richie  says, about to pull out again, but Eddie stops him.
“Why would I lie?” Eddie asks simply.
“To make me feel better,” Richie continues to laugh.
“Well, that’s not the case. I do love you.” Eddie says merely.
“Can you tell me why?” Richie raises an eyebrow.
“Because you’re a fucking idiot,” Eddie says with a blank face. Richie stares back with the same deadpanned look. There’s a moment of intense staring before Eddie busts out in laughter causing Richie to exhale loudly, laughing along as well. “No, but really, I love that side of you. Even though you piss me off, it just makes me fall in love with you even more.”
“I do it because you’re cute when you’re mad,” Richie playfully bites the tip of Eddie’s nose.
“I am not!” Eddie pouts, Richie giggling at Eddie’s annoyance.
“You are,” Richie smirks as he thrusts hard inside of Eddie, making him squeal.
Richie starts thrusting deep and slow, wanting it to be more meaningful than how Richie originally led on. He places more kisses along Eddie’s jaw and neck before capturing his lips again. After some begging and pleading for Richie to go faster, Richie’s unable to hold himself back and caves, going faster. He grabs back at Eddie’s hips, holding him close as he rams over and over into Eddie’s prostate.
“Richie, I-I… I’m gonna cu-”
“Go ahead,” Richie cuts Eddie off, Eddie cumming almost immediately with a loud keen. Richie cums close after, inside Eddie as he’s too weak to pull out. Richie holds himself up as best he can on his shaking and frail arms.
“Fuck,” Eddie pants out, trying to catch his breath.
“Fuck is right,” Richie pants out as well. Richie slowly pulls out of Eddie, flipping them over so Eddie is laying on top of Richie. They lay in comfortable silence until Eddie’s thoughts get the best of him.
“What are we going to tell the others?” Eddie gnaws at his lip nervously.
“For right now, nothing. Let’s just enjoy ourselves.”
Any way we could get like a master list of like Tobias + Rachel moments like “first time they talk about their feelings” and “first kiss” etc? And what book it’s in? If that’s not too much. I love you!!
All right, this is going to be less a master list, more a “things I can think of off the top of my head,” but here it is.
The Non-Definitive List of Rachel/Tobias Milestones:
First crush: #1.  It’s hard to say how much is going on in the background of their first mission, because Jake is a clueless duffer who needs Cassie to explain romance to him and because Jake takes forever to wrap his head around the fact that Rachel is capable of having crushes on boys.  But we know that Rachel is looking at Tobias when she agrees to let the boys walk her and Cassie home, and we know that Rachel immediately jumps to Tobias’s defense when he and Marco start arguing.  Rachel is the most worried about Tobias when the others lose sight of him during that first battle, and the fastest to consider Tobias a part of the group.
Unresolved romantic tension: #3.  Tobias knows he has a thing for Rachel as of this book.  He knows, and he’s not ever planning on doing a dang thing about it, because he’s a bird and she’s a human.  They smash up car commercials together, they hunt for yeerk ships together, and they fly all over town together, but he’s pretty sure they’re going nowhere relationship-wise.  And then Rachel, in the middle of half-drowning in the truck ship’s water tank, starts to say what she needs to say before she dies.  She stays in morph longer than any of the others specifically so that she and Tobias can have this last moment alone.  And Tobias’s response to her near-confession is to grab a dracon beam and go take on an entire yeerk fleet alone.
Acknowledging their feelings: #7.  When the Ellimist comes with his offer, Jake and Marco focus on saving their families, Ax and Cassie go full environmentalist... and Rachel and Tobias are pissed.  Tobias figures out instantly that he’s only there as a human because the Ellimist wants to manipulate Rachel’s emotions through dangling the possibility of de-nothliting her honey-pie in front of her face.  Rachel’s pissed on Tobias’s behalf, Tobias on Rachel’s behalf, and the Ellimist is just deeply amused.
Resolving romantic tension: #12.  When Rachel doesn’t know what to do about the crocodile thing, she goes to Tobias.  When Tobias sees Rachel and Jake headed for another fight, he undercuts it so that Rachel wins.  They banter about Superman and Xena having kids together.  They jerk Marco around together.  They’re a couple already, even if they’ve never even held hands.
First couples’ fight: MM2.  They’re both tired and hungry and injured, to give credit where it’s due, and they’re entitled to get snippy with each other.  It’s also worth noting that they resolve their spat in a pretty healthy way — Tobias acknowledges that he underestimated how hard it would be to control the deinonychus morph, Rachel acknowledges that she underestimated how dangerous the deinonychuses would be, they both acknowledge that they’re not at their best and need to drop the subject until they’re in a better mood.  It’s also when Rachel recognizes that Tobias isn’t, fundamentally, a mere human: she doesn’t reach him through the dino instincts until she pivots from descriptions of fingers and toes and instead reminds him of flying.
Healthiest moment: #23.  Yes, a matter of opinion, but I love how supportive Rachel is toward Tobias throughout this whole book.  She’s quick to reassure him that she doesn’t think it’s weird to eat roadkill, and equally quick to drop the subject when he wants to.  Whatever Tobias needs, from a sympathetic ear to a killer grizzly, she’s happy to help him through this difficult time.
Labeling the relationship: #27.  Bless T.T. and his stupid little 1990s So Cal name.  It takes T.T.’s dimples and his smooth-talking and his sheer ordinariness for Rachel to realize that she doesn’t want dimples or smooth-talking or ordinariness.  She wants the kind of guy who is terrified of water but will become a sperm whale to keep her safe.  She wants a “mouse-eating freak,” because she’s a squid-eating freak herself.  She wants someone around whom she can be ugly, can be vulnerable, can be scared, can be herself.  Also, I love that moment with Tobias commenting that T.T. is “pretty cute, and perceptive too” after T.T. says something unrepeatable about Rachel’s violent tendencies and sense of propriety.
First kiss: MM3.  It’s the moment just after Rachel was “killed” by a cannonball aboard the Trafalager and then pops back up in the middle of Princeton University’s campus.  Tobias runs and grabs her, she smooches him, Marco asks if he can have a kiss as well, the racist dude that Cassie was in the middle of intimidating cries on the floor.  It’s all very romantic.
The L Word: #32.  The whole book is about Rachel learning to reconcile the different sides of herself, but a big part of it is her realizing that Tobias has gone through many of the same struggles.  Tobias knows she’s a killer, and he’s a killer too.  Tobias knows she’s a frightened softie at heart, and he is one too.  Tobias’s entire life has been about him trying to stick together disparate pieces of himself, which is why Tobias is the only thing Mean Rachel and Nice Rachel can agree upon, and it’s why Tobias is the only one whom Rachel wants to see after it’s all over.
Best “battle couple” moment: #36.  A matter of opinion, of course, but I love the moment that the yeerk submarine starts to come apart and Rachel bodily wraps herself around Tobias to protect him.  Honestly the whole motif of them pairing up their battle morphs — hawk-Tobias compensating for bear-Rachel’s major weakness through acting as her eyes and ears, bear-Rachel compensating for hawk-Tobias’s relative delicacy through being the tank of the team — does my heart good.  But I have an extra-large soft spot for this moment because when the shit hits the fan, Rachel’s immediate reaction is to throw her entire body between Tobias and danger.
Picking out furniture: #49.  Yes, Rachel is joking when she tells Tobias that they need to get patio furniture for his meadow, but it’s also an affirmation that they both view this as a long-term thing they’ve got going.  She wants them to have a place together, even if it is a random clearing in the woods with a deeply suspicious number of lounge chairs.
First date: ???  Arguably, Rachel and Tobias never go on a single actual date-date, and I think that’s a lot of the beauty of their utterly unique relationship.  Ones that could count:
Destroying a car commercial in #3.  Although there are hints in #2 that Rachel goes flying alone with Tobias sometimes, this is the first time we actually see them doing something for fun together.
Running around as hork-bajir in #13.  It’s the first time they go on a mission as a couple, the first time they really consider the possibility that they could have a relationship now that Tobias can morph, and the first instance of them using “paired” morphs together.
Tobias’s birthday in #23.  If “date” means sharing a meal together, then by gum Rachel baking an entire cake for Tobias and then having the world’s strangest conversation about his family history while they sit on the floor of her room and eat with their hands has got to count.
The school dance in #29.  This is the first time (that we know of) where they go to a public human gathering as a formal couple.
The opening sequence of #33.  This moment canonically makes “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls their song, and it involves the first real conversation about their future as a couple.
The ending sequence of #33.  EVERYTHING HURTS AND NOTHING IS OKAY at the end of this book, but it also involves them doing human-stuff like hugging and hanging out on the beach followed by them doing raptor-stuff like flying around together, because everyone but especially Rachel is trying to do whatever Tobias needs right then.  It’s also the most emotionally raw moment between them, but one they get through together.
Watching Felicity together in #35.  I love this moment, not in the least because Rachel and Tobias are both like “how dare you interrupt our soap opera with yeerks, Marco?” and it hints at what they’ve been up to in the background of the books they don’t narrate.  It’s also canon that Rachel doesn’t have a TV in her room, so that suggests that human-Tobias and human-Rachel were sacked out on her couch together, possibly while Naomi glared disapprovingly from the door to the kitchen.
Having burgers in #49.  Rachel bringing Tobias McDonald’s is actually the first time they label one of their own meetups as being a date, for what it’s worth.
Most painful moment: #54, duh.  For me it’s a three-way tie between Tobias guiding Rachel through her last battle after she’s blinded by snake venom, Rachel and Tobias both taking on human morph so that they can say goodbye to each other THROUGH A VIEWSCREEN, and Tobias stealing the urn with Rachel’s ashes because he wants her to have a memorial her way.  Ugggghh why do these children wound me so.
———
The overzealous grin dropped from your face as soon as the cell door slid shut, the air-tight lock hissing; twisting the dagger into your hopes of escape. Normally you were confident in situations like this, too confident. But now you knew, there was  no way out from this.
The cold metal pinched at the skin on your wrist as you writhed and contorted in an effort to gain some leverage, some space, some hope. It was no good. You were stuck, indefinitely. They knew that if you had your hands you’d make an easy case of escaping, but to your dismay, they’d clocked this, and so you were the only prisoner on the correctional transport vessel with stun cuffs.  Great.  Slowly you pulled yourself from the ground to right yourself from where you were laying after being thrown in, doing as best you could with the cuffs binding your wrist’s behind your back. Now slumped, knees bent and in a kneeling position facing away from the door, you began to take in your surroundings.
The cell which you were housed in was cold and dark, despite the bright white light that illuminated the small box, mirroring your feelings to a T, ‘ironic’. Four pristine white walls boxed you in, almost making you feel claustrophobic despite the room. To the left of you, there was a small ledge built into the wall, you assumed this was to be your bed. It was plain and flat, no markings, no sharp edges as to minimise the risk of injury. ‘ Who needs a back anyway?’ You mentally chuckle to yourself, trying to make light of an already bleak situation.
What you think to be hours pass meticulously slowly, but you’ve worked yourself into a state of false meditation, daydreaming almost. It was your minds automatic repose to trauma, taking you away from the present your body found itself in and disconnecting, taking you somewhere else, anywhere else. Somewhere where you didn’t have to run and hide because of who you were.
Trying to calm your racking nerves, you took a deep sigh,  ’might as well get used to it, you’re here for the lo-‘.
Footsteps.   But not droid…  human?  Turning your head slightly, still kneeling and eyes still closed you honed in on the noise signature, trying to make out the conversation.
“…Gotta choose soon Twi, that destroyer’s gonna be here in 15…”. ‘ Destroyer?’  You thought to yourself, what use is a destroyer out here? This correctional transporter did carry high threat individuals, but this was a max security metal box, no one could get in or out… so you thought.
“Patience... Lady knows best”. You could feel the blatant seduction in their voice, obviously using their words to gain an advantage over who they were talking to. If it weren’t for the destroyer comment you’d have thought they were just two workers looking for a quick fix someplace private. But the destroyer? ‘ What did they mea-‘
A heavy voice interrupts your monologue. “Just hurry up and cage him, or I'm gonna break tiny”. Focusing your mind more, you listened deeper, soon realising that two sets of footsteps were looming, louder and louder.  Shit, they’re in the corridor..what in the maker is going on?  Now only mere feet from you, the second voice speaks again. “Perfect…”. The T was exaggerated, almost with a hiss as it sounded like they were cut off from their monologue. Lighter, more agile footsteps made their way into the scene you’d pictured in your head. You imagined what sounded like two males and a female stood together on the other side of your cell. The quieter footsteps louder now, a modulated voice broke the whispering tension. “What's here, we’ve already got Qin, I thought it was only one?”. You found it hard to make out any emotion from this voice, in part the modulator but also, weirdly, the aura that was being given off also barred your mental vision.
“An eye for an eye, Mando” came from a new, vindictive voice, and before you could react, your cell door opened, the clattering of metal of what you assumed was a body chucked in. This caught you off guard, but you quickly opened your eyes and pushed from your knees, rolling on your side to right yourself into a crouching, defensive pose just in from the back wall of your cell, now facing forwards towards the commotion. Almost as soon as it had opened, the cell door shut, cutting your chances of escape. ' Damn it’
“You deserve this!” Echoed from the corridor as the four bodies made haste.
Quickly you darted your eyes to the new presence in your cell. The room now soaked red. Your interrogation was met with a harsh, brutal T visor. You were offset by the blank tint that blatantly stared back at you. You felt judged despite not being able to see their eyes, their gaze almost reading your mind and soul. Did they have eyes, were they human?  What would they do to you, were they friend or foe…  You quickly chased that thought away, not wanting to start a fight that didn’t need to happen, but you couldn’t help the defensive feeling that had made your hairs stand on end. You loved a bit of drama, but this was all too real, being stuck on a max security ship for something you couldn’t help, now with someone, something, you didn’t know was going to eat or kill you. This had all got a bit too out of hand; either way, you weren’t going to drop your guard now, no more stupid mistakes.
Both of you stared for a second too long, waiting for fo the other to make the first move.
“I need to get out of this cell” came the modulated voice as they slowly pushed themselves off their front, now revealing the heavy, Beskar chest plate. Wow this guy must really be pulling the big numbers to afford Beskar…  makes sense for them to be jumping a max security prison, or was jumping at least until they landed indignantly in your cell.
“No shit.” You chime back, almost laughing at the plainly obvious remark that they’d made.  Duh.  They centred himself, now standing a few feet from you; still not cutting the weighted gaze between you two.
“Give me a hand getting out and I’ll help you get off this ship”. Now that was tempting, but if they hadn’t already noticed your wrists were bound so the gesture fell short.
“If you hadn’t noticed my hands are already tied, would if I could.” You chide, your day couldn’t get any worse. Being offered a way out by this mysterious armoured being, almost given it on a silver spoon and plate, only for it to be out of arms reach, literally. Slowly lifting yourself up, you turned to go and sit on the bed sticking out from the wall. Before you could sit, the walking shield had walked up over to you, haste in his movements. He went to grab your wrist’s from the side. Alarm bells ringing, you quickly ducked and rolled to the cell door at the front, just avoiding his grasp. No way they were going to take your denied offer out on you. You were smaller than them, yes, but also ( you didn’t like to admit)  highly trained. You stood at a 45 to them, knees bent and ready to defend yourself the best you could despite your restrictions.
They turned harshly, squaring up to you. “Let me remove the cuffs”. This stopped you dead in your tracks.  They were gonna help you? Why? What use could you be to them?  You slowly stood up, turning towards the door now, exposing your back. This went against everything you’d ever learnt, Lori would murder you if they knew you were doing this, but something in the other’s demeanour made you trust them like you were in a trance, something you didn’t know as to why, but your gut was usually correct. And it was. The sound of cuffs hitting the floor made you flinch. You weren’t dead,  phew . Turning around hastily, you met the gaze again, but this time it was less threatening, still scary, yes, but trustworthy.
They walked up next to you, peering out of the cell into the corridor, You notice your morphed reflection in the shiny Beskar pauldron. Breaking you from your gaze, they pushed you back, urging you to get down to the side of the door, head-turning and placing an upright finger in front of the visor, mimicking a ‘shh’. You got the hint.
Body tense you crouched, back against the wall. Gazing down at your wrists you clocked the dried crimson lines etched into your skin. You must’ve really been pulling on those cuffs, enough to draw blood.
Quietly they lifted their left hand in between the bars of the door, their helmet just off the side, tracking something. The menacing glare was evident even from behind the mask, you could feel the urgency prickling off of them. You stiffened, remaining quiet, you could sense that this person knew what they were doing.
Suddenly they were struggling against the door, turning their back then yanking their arm down only to them grab a security void with their other hand from behind the door. The droid let off a blaster shot, the projectile pinging off the inside of the room, eventually discharging when it hit the armour of the masked assailant next to you. Unfazed, undamaged.  damn, that stuff’s hard .
The arm comes unhinged and the wine of the droid almost pulls a heartstring, until you remember that's the whole reason as to why you're here... droids.  The masked accomplice lifts the blaster, making quick work of the droid.
They drop the blaster, taking the arm they just pillaged and placing it vertically to the locking key of the door. With a subtle twist, the unlocking key slides out from the droid's arm, to then be placed into the key and used to unlock the door.
The door slides open. You can’t believe it, everything that's happened in the last 24 hours has been a blur, but this, you couldn’t have pictured it even if you tried.
You look up again into the steely gaze. “Follow me, behind me” came the voice. Damn, they weren’t one with words, either that or this was just routine to them. Standing back up, you nod slightly at them. You guess you aren’t one for words either, especially now. You’d always figured it’s best to keep your mouth shut unless you have to talk, and even then, in- tense situations like this, you had to be sure that what you were saying was thought out and logical; you had no time for mistakes. Plus, you weren’t going to give yourself away straight away, you didn’t even know who you were escaping with, they could be more trouble than you could handle. Hushing that thought away you reasoned,  it can’t get much worse than this, trust yourself to make it out alive .
Following behind them, jogging with light footsteps through the hallway, silent, red lights flashing, the place plunged in an atmospheric,  dangerous glow.
You gazed upon the controls, wondering why they’d brought you to the control room. There are no escape pods here, surely just getting back to however they got on this ship would be the smartest idea? Breaking your line of thought, they point to the security screens, showing four bodies running down a hallway. Two Twi’leks, a Devaronian and a Human. The conversation from earlier now started to make sense.
“I'll take the Devaronian and the human, you take the Twi’lek. The female has knives.” The voice sounding stern and logical, you trusted this voice, even through the vocoder. They knew what they were doing, at least it looked that way. “We have 13 minutes to leave. Make it quick.”  Jeez ok, I’ll do my best, how do they even know I know how to fight?  Before you could ask anymore internal questions, they were out the door, pacing down the hallway to the left. Taking this as your cue, you followed, branching in the other direction.  She has knives, right, close combat, you’ve done this before, you can do - you will do it again. Focus.  After a quick few turns here and there you hear the closing of a door just around the corner from you, up the hallway to your left, accompanied by the grumble and hiss of a female voice. You lean back against the wall, closing your eyes you chant to yourself,  That must be her. Now, breathe… Easy pickings.  Striding from the corner you were leaning against, mind focused, you face the Twi’.
“Spose' you could call it bad luck, others fortune.” You say smoothly, calmly. The Twi shifts, pivoting to face you from the other end of the hallway.
“I guess you two are working together now? Hmm? Yes,… did he charm you? Don’t take it personally honey but he’s not your type, his tastes aren’t in the defenceless.” She remarks, the S rolling off of her tongue in a hiss; her eyes glaring daggers into yours, trying to force the focus out of you. Seen it, done that , you thought to yourself.
“And you’d know?” You retort back, still holding the battle-trained composure in your voice.
“Oh honey you really have a lot to learn…” she strides slowly like she’s hunting her prey.  Yeah, ‘cause I’m the prey in this situation.  You internally smirked, you almost felt bad for the pain you know you could cause, but shouldn’t. That’s not the Way. “I know exactly what makes him tick, done it myself. You’ll get bored, he never removes  it . Don’t flatter yourself, you’re not any different.”  Who even said I had an interest, didn’t even know they were a He. Guess this one wasn’t a clean breakup.  You chimed to yourself, her position now about 4 metres away. You could sense it, she thought this was easy, that she had this.  Sure she does.
Then, you feel it. Tensing you duck to the right, balancing on all fours as a dagger shoots past your left shoulder, your eyes still pinned to hers, a small smirk gracing your lips. You’d missed this, the adrenaline, the game of prediction,  feeling . This was where you felt most alive, doing what you were made to do. The gift you had was a double-edged knife. Yes, it got you in this situation, but without it, you’d have been dead long before your years.
She strode forwards, you lunging low to the ground, effortlessly covering ground. You were now only a couple feet from each other. She crouched, attempting to mirror your battle style. The Twi’ goes to throw another dagger as you rolled to her left side. You’d sensed it before her hand even left the blade. Quickly standing to her side, you turned your head and looked into her eyes; they’re now wide, the confidence stripped bare, beneath the realisation that she’d maybe have bit off more than she could chew.
With this you dropped, kicking a leg to trip her from behind. Falling, she grabbed your collar, pulling you with her. Now falling atop, you righted yourself by bracing to the side, scrambling up into your stance. She went to lunge but paused. Glancing down she saw her belt was gone, confusion, then realisation swept her face to meet you gripping it, your right hand through a tightened loop and the other pulling it taunt.
I love that trick .
Grabbing another dagger she bound towards you, holding it outright in her right hand. You twisted to the side, wrapping her wrist in her own belt. She shifted, throwing a punch to your right cheek.  No stupid mistakes.  The anger at your mistake now bubbling you wrap her other hand in the belt as its retreating, her wrists now bound with yours. She hisses a snarl at you, “Bitch.” The smirk on your face grows a little wider now, the true fun only just beginning.
You shifted your weight harshly to the left, throwing her in a 180 to disorient and gain momentum. Dropping to your knees and twisting you bring your entwined wrists above your head and then yank over your right shoulder, bringing her down onto her back, head now facing you and her body strewn away from your core. You quickly unwind her wrists, forcing the belt down over her neck to strangle. You stretched out your left leg reaching for the knife that had dropped from her pouch with your toes, sliding it back to you with a kick. The knife now secured in your left hand, you edge it to her neck, only now looking back into her eyes. “A-lot to learn huh? Ironic.” The satisfaction in your voice over the play on words was clear, and so was the fear in her eyes. Oh, you loved proving people wrong, especially when they pretty much do it for you.
That's when you felt it,  the temptation, the greed to end her now. Do it. You’ve done it before, yes, you can do it again, do it.
No. You’re not giving yourself up like that again. You barely made it back to yourself last time, don’t push your luck now, you’ve learnt since then. You’re a better person now, you think… killing like this. This is not the Way.
The smirk now leaving your face, you twist her round, knife now held to the back of her neck. Using the belt to secure her wrists you pull her up. Eyeing the empty cell on the other side of the hallway you walk her over. She’s protesting but stops as soon as you edge the tip of her own blade into the skin on the back of her neck. She tenses, but follows your directions to the cell, stepping in and turning to face you from within the room.
“Coward” She whispered, eyes attached to yours through the fury of defeat, her fake smile taunting you.
Oh, the temptation.
“Don't flatter yourself, Honey”.
Her smile drops along with the security door
It’s a Deal- three
supernatural! johnny x reader x jaehyun,  mate!au
its heating up my friends and boy is the plot gonna be spicy
Word Count: 1.6k
warnings: language, supernatural stuff
<previous    three       next>
series masterlist
You had decided that whatever happened yesterday was just a dream, some sort of midterms week hallucinations. And you were never, NEVER, going to think of them again. You had to attribute it to a momentary lapse in sanity, because nothing else would be able to explain the absolute shitshow that was yesterday, and to be honest, you didn’t really want any explanations.
So you continued on with your day as you normally would. You worked your shift at the cafe, attended your classes, and nothing happened. You were relieved. You felt the tension that had been building up in you all day long ebb out.
It happened when you were walking home from your last class. You chose to go through the student center, the chill of the night air enough to drive you inside. Something you never allowed yourself to do. You liked walking outside, but tonight, you felt an inexplicable pull towards the student center.
You saw him near the dining hall. He was leaning against the wall and when he noticed you staring he smiled. It was a stunning smile, and it showed his dimples. He chuckled a bit as you stared, walking towards your frozen body. He drew looks from everyone around, and you felt your heart swell with, what was it? Jealousy? Pride? After all it was you he was walking towards. You couldn’t hide your grin as the people around you looked you up and down in shock.
He was in front of you before you could take a deep breath. And now you were stuck breathing in his heavenly lavender scent. It was intoxicating and you were overwhelmed.
“Long time no see,” he giggled, his dimples deepening. You swear you melted, his giggle and his dimples probably the most adorable thing you had ever witnessed.
 “That’s something humans say, right?” he asked quietly, taking a quick glance around.
“Yeah some people say that,” you smiled back, “What exactly are you doing here? Don’t you have… I don’t know, prince stuff to do?”
“I do,” he smiled, “but I quite like pissing off my father, and enrolling here also allows me the pleasure of pissing off my brother.”
“Wait- you enrolled?”
Jaehyun just shrugged and nodded, like enrolling in college was some simple thing. Oh my god. The money he had to have spent to enroll, and to not even want to learn something! You could never imagine wasting that much money, let alone even having that much money.
“Why do you look so worried, pet?” Jaehyun said, intertwining his hand in yours and pulling you brusquely through the student center, “Hurry, we’ve got an important event to attend.”
“What event?” you asked, “Jaehyun, where are we going?”
He ignored your questions, mischief in his eyes as he lead you to a part of campus you had been avoiding all day, the quad where you knew the portal to the faerie world lay. Knots formed in your tummy, nervousness seeping out of every pore of your body that Jaehyun had to wrinkle his nose at your now distressed scent.
“Jaehyun I don’t wanna go there again,” you said, halting your movements, “You can’t make me.”
“That pet, is where you are wrong.”
With a flick of his thumb across your hand, and with his words making you more angry than you should be, he effectively distracted you just enough to go through the portal. Before you knew it, you were standing in front of the most magnificent palace you had ever seen. Your anger dissipated as you took in the pearly white stone mansion in front of you. You were in complete awe.
Faeries loitering around the front gate bowed their heads as Jaehyun waltzed passed them, not even glancing in their direction. He was too busy staring at you. He couldn’t help but grin at your wonder, your mouth open in awe at the sight in front of you. He had to admit, the palace was exceptional, even if he hated every moment he spent in its walls.
You took one look at your oversized sweatshirt and ripped jeans, suddenly feeling extremely unconscious. How could you enter a palace in such a horribly under-dressed way.
As if he read your mind, Jaehyun chuckled, “Don’t worry, I picked out a dress just for you, pet.”
You just swallowed, touching the necklace that he had given you around your neck as you followed him through the palace into a decadent blue room. It was the most expensive looking room you had ever been in. Gold detailing on the walls and ceiling. The gold resembling trees, and animals and stars and so many other things. But the stars entranced you, their gold sparkling shapes looking too real to be painted. Plus, you could’ve sworn you saw one of the stars move.
Your eyes fell onto a gown that was hanging in the corner, a gasp leaving your mouth before you could even control yourself. It was a beautiful gown, a dark navy blue that looked expensive as hell. You took one look behind you, to say something, anything to Jaehyun that would express how you could absolutely no way wear something that expensive, but he was gone. Several faeries stood at the door, their makeup and hair done extravagantly already.
“Well what are you waiting for?” An older looking woman said with a smile, “Put it on.”
And you did. The dress was more than you ever expected, flecks of gold and silver shining as you walked. It looked like a piece of the night sky had been cut and made into a dress. You blushed as you looked at yourself in the mirror. Much more of your skin showing that you would’ve guessed just by looking at the dress hanging up. Then again, faeries were less modest than humans, so you supposed no one would notice the extra skin.
The faeries crowded around you at once, hurrying to pull your hair up and do your make up. They were done so quickly you couldn’t believe it. The woman from before, smiled gently at you as she pulled out a golden headband adorned with gold metal stars. Your outfit completely taking you aback, I mean you looked like a completely different person. You looked like a fae.
You took your appearance in, the past 30 minutes feeling like a complete dream. You had never been taken care of like this.
You heard a cough from behind you, and turned quickly to see Jaehyun in an equally stunning emerald silk top. He smiled brightly as he took in your appearance.
“You look magnificent, pet,” He bowed slightly, offering his hand out for you to take.
“Jaehyun, I-,” you started, “Thank you for this, but I really can’t accept something so expensive, and for me to take all this time in your room, I shouldn’t.”
You were halted in the middle of your sentence by a laugh from him, “This room is far too simple to be mine, it lacks many luxuries and necessities. This is simply one of our guest rooms that I thought was perfect for you, along with that dress.”
“Still, you have to let me wear something else, or at least pay you back.”
This received a snort from the prince, “You couldn’t pay the price of this dress in your lifetime pet. So please, let me gift it to you. I picked it out with the thought of you, and would be so offended if you refused. I thought a dress of stars was perfect for someone with a galaxy twinkling in their eyes.”
Now, you weren’t stupid. You studied mythology and creatures everyday. But Jaehyun’s compliment had knocked you off of your game for just a second. Taking a deep breath, you tried your hardest to focus. Knowing if you were going to be indebted to him was important.
“And do I have to give you something in return?” You asked, a sudden lump in your throat.
“Nothing is free here, pet.” Jaehyun smirked, “It’d be best to remember that tonight. You’ll be surrounded by very curious fae. I wouldn’t want you to get hurt.”
You had a sinking feeling as you followed behind Jaehyun warily. The magnificence of the halls sterring your thoughts more towards their decadence, rather than the debt you now owed. You reached large white and gold doors, that Jaehyun pushed open with ease. Jaehyun pulled you into a banquet room filled with elegantly dressed fae, you left to follow behind him helplessly. The laughing and chattering subsiding at the Prince’s entrance.
Jaehyun held your hand tightly as he guided you up the stairs towards the throne where his family were seated in their respective seats beside an older looking faerie. Jaehyun’s father looked you up and down once, before sending a chill down your spine at his words.
“The court welcomes YN LN,  beloved betrothed of Prince Jaehyun, and future Queen of Longate Isle.”
You heard a gasp, and you genuinely didn’t know if it came from you. It took you a bit longer to process the words that were just spoken, but when you did, panic overtook you. You whipped your head towards Jaehyun, who was too busy thanking his father for him to notice. You felt a pair of eyes bore into the side of your face, whispers and gasps echoing throughout the room as the shock from the news spread throughout the room.
“Consider us equal for the dress now pet,” Jaehyun whispered in your ear, a sly grin on his face.
You looked at Johnny, realizing he was the one who had been staring at you intently. He was standing, a fact that he didn’t find as troublesome as his sister, who was desperately trying to pull him down by his pants. His gaze was wild and furious, and for a moment, you thought he was pissed at you. You quickly realized he was staring at Jaehyun with murder in his eyes. He cleared his throat, glancing away from his brother and towards you, his face paling the more the news started settling into his brain.
His anger morphed into panic the longer he looked at you. Which made you wonder what the hell you had just gotten into. You were scared. You were mortified of whatever Jaehyun had planned. And you were pissed that yet another faerie tricked you into doing something that would change your life. Your fear was multiplied by Jaehyun’s one word whisper as he passed Johnny to sit down, your shocked frame falling into his lap easily.
Jaehyun’s voice saying checkmate repeating over and over in your head.
Catching Rain
Tumblr media
Part of The Untamed - EXO Wolf Universe
Genre: Wolf!AU
Pairing: Minseok x Reader
Summary: You were more than satisfied with your life. You attended a nice college, had nice friends, a nice boyfriend. That’s what your life was: nice. You weren’t looking for anything more, so what were you to do when this seemingly harmless boy walked into your life and turned your nice little world into one much more dangerous?
Part: 1 I 2 I 3 I 4 I 5 I 6 I 7 I 8 I 9 I 10 I Epilogue
**
The pencil bounced up and down on the folder lying closed on the table. Several students nearby eyed the noise created by the eraser and metal casing (you had an odd love for a good old fashioned pencil that needed sharpening) but you didn’t stop. You couldn’t stop, not with all this nervous energy surging through your veins. You really shouldn’t be this nervous. This was only a simple… tutoring session? No, it couldn’t really be classified in that category. He wasn’t going to teach you anything – at least, you didn’t think you would be learning anything in this project. Supervising seemed more appropriate. A direct line in case you were stuck – which, to be honest, you already were.
When Sungkyu had told you about this extra credit, it had sounded so easy. Even the outline he’d created had been simple. But your usually creative brain had seemingly run dry of the juice that sustained it. Were you finally finding your fatal flaw? Capturing an image, finding the moment in a sea of moments, that was easy for you. Apparently your talent stopped at the ability to apply that skill to anything else. You’d arrived at the library a whole hour early in an effort to have something started by the time Minseok was sitting across from you. But you just couldn’t find the connection between art and math. You weren’t Leonardo Da Vinci.
“This seat taken?”
Your pencil stopped mid-tap. Face remaining neutral, you looked up. On the other side of the table, Minseok stood casually and waited for an answer. The gray hoodie he’d adorned laid slackly against his torso, hugging his hips where black pants peeked out underneath. One hand held onto the standard backpack hanging off his shoulder while the other was stuffed in his jeans’ front pocket. A sweet, crooked smile stretched across his thin lips. And there your heart went, doing backflips again. With the fear of your voice cracking, you simply gestured to the chair across from you. Nodding, Minseok pulled the plastic seat out from under the table and sat down. “So, how far have you gotten?”
“Not even past the start line,” you admitted. You opened the folder you’d put together for the project to show the pathetic state of your effort. The only scribbles in the margins were from tiny, poorly drawn doodles and some last minutes thoughts from your philosophy class. If someone were to say you were an intelligent person, you would like to agree with them, but this current predicament was making you feel like a fraud.
Taking the outline out of the folder’s pocket, Minseok scanned over the paper. “You know, art and math are more connected than you think.”
You raised an eyebrow teasingly. “Are you going to give me a lecture on how artists have used math to create measurements in their sculptures or paintings?”
“Well, not anymore.”
You laughed. “I get that there’s a connection. Math makes up everything, right? I just can’t find a real world application between photography and math.”
Minseok pursed his lips to the side, thinking. “Maybe you can use math to help you set up a shot.”
“No,” you shook your head. “Pictures are captured organically. If you think about it too much, it loses its magic.” Pushing yourself up, you leaned across the table. You turned on your camera and angled the display screen so you both could see as you flipped through the pictures from the clearing. A small, appreciative smile crept up on his lips. “Capturing your subject is all about the feeling. It isn’t as easy as doing a math problem and then angling your lens before clicking a button. There’s no heart in that. The focus should be on what’s in front of you.”
“But don’t you adjust the shutter speed and light index and other things to change up the picture to capture what you want?”
You felt like a guppy with your mouth opening and closing as you searched for a response. All your brain could come up with was, “Well… yes….”
“So, you do use numbers in your photography.”
“That’s different.”
“How so?”
Suddenly, you were Baby put in a corner.
A non-malicious grin spread across his face. “Just because you don’t realize you’re using the numbers doesn’t mean that you’re not.”
You couldn’t help but laugh at the comment. “That sounds an awful lot like a freshman philosophy lecture.”
“Could be. I did only take the one semester for a humanities credit so I could be paraphrasing. But if something stuck then perhaps that’s the one credit that wasn’t a waste of money.”
The laughter coming from you was nonstop. You couldn’t help it. Every little jab and joke he shot off made you feel like you were the only audience member in a comedy club - however, they weren’t gold. The jokes weren’t even that funny. Some of them might not even meant to be jokes. But the bubbly feeling in your stomach pushed its way up and came out before you could fully process his intention. Talking to him was… effortless. And this was barely a conversation. A single warning bell was ringing in the back of your mind. Dangerous territory was near, but you kept walking. Curiosity was a strong attractor.
“So,” Minseok clapped his hands together and folded his fingers, resting his chin on his knuckles. In that single motion, he transformed from the GTA to the optimistic sophomore in his looks. “Can I ask you a question? Besides the one I just did, anyway.”
You nodded, “Of course.” Anything to keep you from actually having to work on this project. Which, obviously, was very counter intuitive, but you would finish it… eventually. And if you didn’t get too much done today, then that was nearly a guaranteed second session.
“As a photographer, what would you say is the hardest thing to capture? Like, in a picture?”
You were taken aback. No one had ever asked you that before. You didn’t even think the topic had come up in any of your classes. Different subjects floated through your head as you tried to find the answer to his question. Moving objects was the go-to reply. But some - like human beings - were easy with the tiniest modifications. There was one thing, though, one particular part of nature that you loved but often gave you frustration. “Rain.”
“Rain?”
“Yeah… Catching rain. You can feel it, but you can’t always see it.” You held out your hand, palm towards the ceiling. “The drops could be pouring down from the clouds, hitting your skin, but the camera can’t capture it.”
“So, what do you do then?” He asked with an eagerness, with true attentiveness and interest in your words. It made you sit up.
“You change your strategy. You slow things down. That’s when it comes out best.”
He nodded slowly. He took in every word you were saying and absorbed it. A warmth spread across your cheeks and you prayed it wasn’t visible to him. Out of nowhere, Minseok cleared his throat and sat back. “Maybe you could use the numbers in the equations.”
You grimaced as you came back to the reason the two of you were here. “That sounds complicated.”
“Okay, then,” he chuckled. “Why not-”
The muddled shrill of a cell phone vibrating against the table. You hadn’t even realized he’d put it there at some point during the conversation. He let out a disappointed sigh as he flipped the device over and checked the identity of the caller. An apologetic look was thrown your way as he answered. “Hello?”
The faint, intelligible voice of another guy echoed through the speaker. Minseok nodded as if the caller could see him.
“Okay. I’ll go now.”
And there was the wave of disappointment. So today was to come to an end already. And you still were no closer to a realization than before.
Minseok pressed the red button and disconnected the call. The smile that he had on his face earlier morphed into a sadder version. “I have to go.”
“That’s okay,” you reassured him. “Hold that thought for next time.”
A spark flashed in his eyes. Was that a bit flirtatious? How bad was it that you could no longer control the fluctuation in your voice?
“And when would next time come around?”
“Saturday?” Eric had to spend the day finishing off the set pieces for the upcoming play. When he was working like that, he could be lost in painting for hours. Getting him on the phone or off the stage would be next to impossible. That seed of guilt was pushing on your stomach again. Hanging out with a guy that made you laugh while your boyfriend was off somewhere else wasn’t a good idea. Maybe you would ask Eric first if he was comfortable with that. If he said no you could always come up with a good excuse to back out.
“Saturday should work.” In a quick motion, he flipped your folder around and wrote down his number. “Just let me know what time works best for you.” Jumping up from his seat, he threw his bag over his shoulder and started to walk away. But after a few steps, he turned back around. A wide, gum-revealing smile spread across his face as he waved casually. But his smile was anything but casual. In it you saw hope, a possibility of something more.
I’m in trouble.
You knew it. You knew very well that meeting up with him was going to lead to a terrible predicament. But as he walked away, you’d resigned to follow that rabbit hole anyway.
Needing a distraction, you hopped up and headed out your own way. There was still another matter you needed to solve and now was the perfect time. With your backpack in the passenger’s seat, you drove out of the parking lot and towards the back roads, taking the same way to the forest you had previously. The wheels of your car matched up almost perfectly with the marks from before. Locking your backpack in the trunk, you pocketed your keys and phone and started hiking. You followed the path to the clearing; your nerves bounced faster and faster the closer you got.
Immediately, you headed straight for the tree that had been your resting place. The grass was taller in only a few short days. The blades scratched gently at your hands as you pushed the blades aside for a better view of the ground. After circling the area, you had to give up. It wasn’t there. The wolf flashed in your mind. Shaking your head, you ridiculed the idea. The wolf couldn’t have taken your notebook… could it? Certainly if he had there would be remnants of paper still around.
Blowing air through your lips, you sat down at the base of the tree. Now what were you going to do?
A rustling nearby made you jump. Out of the trees, the wolf from before - at least, you assumed it was the same wolf - cautiously came towards you. “Did you take my notebook,” you asked out loud. The wolf pulled back his ears in response. Your eyes widened. “Did you?”
The wolf barked. You had to laugh at yourself. You were having a conversation with a wolf. You felt ridiculous. Again.
You sighed. “I guess it's just time to face the facts. It’s gone. Eric won’t be too happy with me.”
The wolf growled before coming up next to you and curling up in the grass to your right. He laid his head in your lap. Yes, this was definitely your wolf. What else were you supposed to do if not pet him?
“Eric will just be disappointed,” you said. “Not like, angry or anything. I’ll need to come up with another place to lose it, though. If he found out that I came to the forest by myself, he’d turn red. Especially after-” You froze, your hand hovering over the wolf’s ears. The news of the campers returned to the front of your mind. They were attacked by an animal - a wolf, most likely. Something still told you that it couldn’t have been the wolf currently resting on your legs. How could he be like a puppy with you and vicious towards others?
Noticing your sudden silence, the wolf lifted his head and looked up at you.
“You didn’t hurt those people, did you?”
The wolf tilted his head to the side. You took that as a good sign.
Reacting to a sound your own human ears didn’t pick up, the wolf’s ears flicked up as he turned towards the trees. He stood up on his paws and pulled on your sleeve with his teeth so you would do the same. One bark conveyed what he was trying to tell you. “Okay,” you nodded. “I’ll go. But you be careful, too, alright? If there’s something… mean running around here, I don’t want you to get hurt either.”
It still amazed you how this animal could somehow understand you. He reared up on his back paws and placed his front on your chest. You were now looking eye to eye with this giant dog. He gave you a sloppy kiss on your cheek before jumping down and nudging you away. He saw you all the way to the edge of the forest. Disappointment weighed you down as you plopped down in the driver’s seat. And you weren’t sure if it was because of the lost notebook or the wolf you were leaving behind.
**
Minseok ran through the forest back to the house. This whole “mate pull” was starting to scare him a little bit. He’d been trying to find any clue to the rogue wolf that had invaded their territory but a feeling told him to go to the clearing again. You’d come back. He was both elated to see you again and petrified that you were out here with no protection. If he hadn’t come across you… he shivered at the very thought of what could have happened. When he heard something moving close by he needed to get you out of there; he didn’t care if it was the omega or a harmless rabbit. Seeing you go created a whimper in his chest, but he would see you again on Saturday. Goodbye for now wasn’t something to stress about.
After running the perimeter for another hour, he headed back to the farmhouse. The conversation from the library followed him through the trees. He’d simply asked a question to keep the conversation going, but he was finding an allegory within your answer.
You’d said in order to catch the rain in a picture you had to slow things down. Maybe that was the approach he had to take with you. His initial plan had perhaps been a bit too strong. If circumstances were different, it might have worked. But given the fact that he had competition for your heart, that would no longer be a good direction to go in. So he would take it slow. He would get to know you through these small meetings about the project. And he would let you get to know him. Maybe then the pull would grow on your side. Maybe then you would come to him on your own terms instead of him chasing you down. Yes, exactly like rain in a photo.
Now back home with a clear head, he slipped into the jeans he’d hidden in the bushes before walking up to the back door. The kitchen was a ruckus like always as he entered. Most of the pack was home from the university, except for Junmyeon. Kyungsoo and Chanyeol were discussing what to do about dinner while Jongdae and Baekhyun were teasing the younger wolves about… something. Minseok couldn’t really pick up on what they were going on about. No one seemed to notice the eldest’s entrance, but that was alright. Minseok simply grabbed a cup from the cabinet and filled it with water from the tap. Leaning against the counter, he sipped at the room temperature liquid with his eyes trained on the floor.
“Minseok?”
He looked up at the brother who called his name. The kitchen had quite down a few notches. “Yeah?”
Jongdae gave him that concerned gaze that curled the corners of his lips. “Why were you out running by yourself?”
“I was just trying to see if I could find the omega.” While that was the truth, it wasn’t everything that occurred out in the woods. He was getting closer to telling everyone about finding his mate, just so he didn’t have to tiptoe around anymore. He would see how Saturday went and then he would decide.
“But why on your own?”
“I sent him.”
Junmyeon came into the kitchen, taking the leather messenger bag that was draped over his shoulder off and placing it on the kitchen table. “It was just a recon mission.” A little smile perked up in the corner of his mouth. Around the room a few eyes rolled, but no one called out the leader’s exaggeration of the situation. “If he was able to find anything then he was supposed to note it and report back.” He looked to Minseok, who shook his head. There was nothing.
“Still odd that you sent him by himself,” Sehun commented with narrowed eyes.
“I thought he could use the quiet.”
“You are all too loud,” Minseok jumped in. Several voices roared in protest, not realizing that they were instead proving his point.
“What’s for dinner?” Jongin asked, the subject immediately being changed. What a relief it was that they all had a powerful focus on their stomachs - especially when they were empty. Minseok took the opportunity to finish off the water and head upstairs to take a shower.
Dreamer Biology - Newton and Reader short fic
Just a short fic on how I feel like Newton and a Human would be friends. So they chill and have meaningful conversations together while they hang out. Just some ideas I drew up and like the thoughts of. Platonic Newton and Reader - Gender neutral Reader - Alien Concepts No thoughts, just Single Braincell Shenanigans. AO3 link for those that would rather read it there > https://archiveofourown.org/works/28950645
You were currently dozing peacefully on a plateau that was near the top of Needlepoint Peaks in Bunkum. Which was the perfect place for a midday snooze. The air at the top was crisp and fresh. Which sent a pleasant feeling that rang throughout the entirety of your organic lungs.
Your skin shivered at the brisk wind as it brushed on by. Carrying the cardboard clouds that hovered nearby away in a random direction. Despite the slight chill, you were completely relaxed and you stretched your arms slightly to loosen the remaining tension from your hike up the mountain. Then, your ears perked up a bit when you heard a hushed curse come from nearby. Ah, that’s right. You almost completely forgot about your companion that decided to accompany you on your trek up the mountainside.
You slowly crack open your eyes and look over. A few meters away from your dormant form sat your only friend in the whole ‘imagisphere’, Newton Pud. Who was fiddling with some equipment just a few feet away from your lazy form. He seemed to be concentrating as he worked on the random project in his lap, getting slightly frustrated at something that wasn’t cooperating with the fixture.
Surrounding himself was a picnic blanket, a basket full of goodies (that you couldn’t ingest sadly), a pile of mechanical pieces,a notebook and pen, a laid out blueprint, and some bottles of some foreign lubricant.
You simply watch as he would look over to your ‘sleeping’ form a few times before getting back to his project, despite the frustration. It made your mind wander a bit. It was rather strange how you two became friends. A human and a lightbulb object-head. Not that you could complain. You were probably really lucky to make any friends out here in the imagisphere. It wasn’t like the natives were hostile to you or anything. It was just because you were a rather strange case. Nobody around here on ‘Bunkum’, nor on the neighboring nearby planet called ‘Craftworld’, have ever seen your kind before. Not that you couldn’t blame them for being a bit cautious. There was rarely anything around here that resembled ‘organic’ materials. It was a dimension filled with fabrics and crafts that were made to mimic the real thing. Nothing here seemed to be made of flesh. Which is what you were made of. Flesh, blood, and bones.
Which was strange in this universe.
You don’t even remember how you arrived here nor why you’re here. But once you were found by the little brave Sackthing, you found yourself meeting ‘The Alliance’ and going on a trip in a little rocket ship. As of right now, you were under the care of the members of that Alliance. Until your culture shock, amnesia, and living predicaments were addressed. So, Larry has been coming to and from Bunkum while attending the popit academy.
With an invitation, you were allowed to travel with Larry and visit Bunkum. That’s when you met Newton and he gave you a grand tour of his homeworld while Larry was teaching his lessons. After that day, you two have been hanging out regularly and seemed to have developed some form of bond. I guess two oddballs being friends wouldn’t be that far fetched, now would it? It was fun hanging out with him though. So you couldn’t really complain. “Erm...pardon me, Chum.” Newton’s voice broke the silence between you two as you sat up slightly, humming in acknowledgement and turning your gaze towards him. He was sitting a little bit away, now facing you fully. The contraption in his lap looking no closer to completion as his electric eyes stare at your own. “Yeah, Newton?” “Um...well. I know this is, uh, rather sudden. But, I have waited a while to question you on this particular topic.” Newton begins as you listen in.
“I can tell from the moment we met, you’re not from around here. Like...you’re not from either Craftworld nor Bunkum. Not even from that odd place, Carnivalia. So, I have gotten rather curious about where you came from.” Newton questions. You think for a second as memories of your true home flash in your head. You shrug.
“I honestly don’t know how I got here, but I’m from a place called Earth. It’s like this world and dimension...just...organic? ‘Real’? Like...stuff is made out of...it’s kinda hard to explain it…” You mutter. Your explanation was met with silence. Newton seemed almost completely confused as he appeared to be thinking deeply before replying. “Uh, chum? Not to doubt your explanation...but ‘Earth’? Isn’t that the ‘Orb of Dreamers’ from mythology? Like...from what I can remember, the legends said that beings from a place called ‘Earth’ is what created the imagisphere long, long ago. Like...we’re talking ancient history here...” You get a bit upset and sit upright to look at Newton fully. “Oh, come on! Newton, look at me! How can I be lying? I mean, nobody around here has ever seen a human before! Do I look like anything ‘natural’ that’s been made around here?” You gesture to yourself as Newton does a quick skim of your figure before locking your eyes together again. “Er...well...now that you say it like that...no? I apologize. I wasn’t saying that you were a liar. I was just...caught off guard a bit by that explanation.” Silence hangs in the air for a moment while he looks a bit bewildered before speaking up once more.
“So…’Earth’. The ‘Orb of Dreamers’. It’s real then? A real place? Not a myth like the mythology legends say it is?” Newton wonders, his eyes sparking a bit.
You roll your eyes comically at his question. “I don’t know, Newton. Am I real? Am I just a hallucination?” You joke. Newton blinks a bit before he looks away timidly. He closes his eyes for a moment, then he presses a finger to his non-existent chin. After a moment of thought, he seems to be ready to ask another question. He opens his eyes and glances back towards your general direction. “What’s it like? The orb of dreamers, I mean.” He asks.
You ponder the question for a moment.
“Well...like I said before...like this place. But, everything is MUCH bigger. Like...I would probably match this mountain in height...or I would be able to pick up a large tin of crackers with extreme ease. I’m scaled down, but everything seems to be accurate to the size of Earth. As for what makes up Earth...it’s just...different? Like...hmmmm...” You were at a complete loss on how to describe your home world to someone who knew only fabric and material. Then, you got an idea while you ran your fingers through your hair. You hold your arm out to your lightbulb companion and he flinched a bit before looking at you curiously. You wiggle your arm for emphasis. “Touch my arm. Tell me what you think.” You gesture again, still holding it out. Newton gives you a questioning glance, but eventually places down the tools he was holding before reaching out with both hands. His fabric appendages touch down on your hand before they grip your palm and fingers. His gaze focuses intensely as he runs his hands up your wrist, forearm, and elbow. His white cloth fingers press in on the flesh. Feeling the hard bones underneath as he curiously prods the alien material that made up your form. He even took to bending the limb. Turning it one way, then the other. Watching the muscles and angles change to provide movement for the direction he chose. He seemed completely fascinated. You almost wanted to laugh as his expression looked similar to that of child wonderment. Like he discovered something for the first time, guaranteed that this was the first time you let anyone else other than Eve touch your flesh.
He slides his hands down your arms and back to your hand, which he begins to mess with the fingers. That is, until he pushed one a bit far and it let out a distinct ‘pop’. He quickly lets go before a flood of apologies suddenly spill from his wiry mouth. You couldn’t help but laugh. “I’m so so so sorry! I didn’t know--oh crumbs! What if I broke it?!?” Newton nearly panics before you shush him. “I’m okay, man! That’s normal...for the most part. Our body parts pop like that to release tension and strain. Keep in mind that we CAN break them, but a mere pop is nothing to be worried about. Observe.” You say. Then, you promptly lace your two hands together and push them outwards.
Resulting in a large series of pops from your fingers and shoulders. Newton’s face violently glitches suddenly at the sound and it quickly morphs into a face of horror. You smirk at his reaction and then begin to turn your back while sitting in place. This resulted in more and louder pops that make Newton recoil in disgust. “AUGH! How does that NOT hurt you?! It sounds so PAINFUL!” Newton yowls. You just laugh a bit and shrug. “Humans are weird like that, Newton.” You say, a smirk still present on your face as Newton tries to shake off the discomfort of the sounds he just witnessed. “You should’ve seen how the others reacted to my bones popping. Larry thought I snapped myself in half and Eve wanted to give me medical attention. So it’s not the first time someone reacted that way.” “Wait...THOSE ARE BONES?!! WHY WOULD HUMANS DO THAT TO THEIR BONES?!!” Newton shrieked as you burst out into another fit of laughter. You struggled to gain your breath as Newton looks at you in a horrified manner. “T-To...hah, release tension! It’s really quite relaxing!” “Balderdash!!” Newton retorts. You snicker a bit as you finally are able to catch your breath. Your laughter and shenanigans echoing through the mountain ranges as Newton quickly shakes his head around a bit, as if trying to dislodge the sound of your bones popping from his memory. A second of bliss passes. “So...you’re naturally warm all of the time?” Newton speaks up again, fiddling with the machine in his lap as he looks at you from time to time from underneath his egg-timer bowler hat. “Well...yeah. Don’t see how you lack body heat, since you’re a lightbulb and all. But, I guess we humans feel like we have little furnaces inside of us that are lit all the time.” “Oh. It’s not like we don’t have body heat. But, we just...don’t feel like you do? It’s kinda strange. You feel like something is constantly warming you up from the inside. Plus, we don’t freeze like you do. We can get ‘cold’ but not enough to actually freeze.” Newton says. You nod in understanding. A brief memory of you nearly freezing in the Ziggurat while touring Bunkum flashes in your mind. Newton then continues. “And your… ’skin’ ...it feels different too. It’s very soft and similar to leather. But, like...there’s really REALLY fine threats that go through it? No stitching or pattern lines...it just looks like everything on you was burned into the covering.” Newton rambles as you listen in. Was having flesh really that strange? “And...I was wondering...what about that stuff on your head? Is it yarn...or a fine string?” Newton ponders out loud, pointing to your hair. “That? Well...I guess silk or ‘fine string’ would be a way to describe it. It grows out of my head naturally. Every week or so, they get longer and longer.” You explain. Newton seemed intrigued by this information. “Wait...you PRODUCE things from your body? Like...constantly??” “Well, yeah. Same with my fingernails. They grow constantly and I have to cut them every now and then.” You show Newton your hand as an example. Newton looks at the ends of your fingers and takes notice of the nails on the end, as well as the creases of your palms and skin lines on your bendable bits.
“What about your eyes?” He asks, letting go of your hand and pointing to your face.
“My eyes? Well...they are a complicated organ. Unlike sackfolk and such, I can’t just change my eyes willy-nilly. These are the same eyes I got from birth. If I’m careful, I’ll have them for the rest of my life.” “If you’re careful?” “Yeah. A human can lose parts of their body and they can’t grow back. Some things can be replaced or substituted. Like a leg or arm, but eyes grant me the ability to see. If I lose them in an accident or fight, I can become blind.” You elaborate. “Ah. I understand...anything else…?” Newton mutters a bit, as if he was thinking of anything else to say. “I also noticed that the locals around here have a tongue made of fabric. I just wanted to say that I have one too.” Without even being asked, you stick out your tongue and wiggle it for emphasis. Newton gives it a disturbed look as he leans back a bit. “What is...what is that bloody thing made of?? It looks so wet and slimy!” You return your tongue back into your mouth before you speak. “Flesh. It’s a muscle that allows me to enunciate and properly pronounce my words. Without it, I would have trouble speaking and communicating vocally.” You idly speak. Newton’s mouth makes a waving motion as a sound of uncertainty emits from him. Then, a minute or two passes once again before Newton seems to take an interest in something else and sets his project aside in favor of the notepad that he was writing on. He flips a few pages before stopping on a blank sheet. Picking up his pen, he begins to write some things down. The sound of his pen was frantic as he seemed to be thinking while he wrote. You could catch some quick sketches of a humanoid-figure being drawn up in his notebook before a few boxes were sketched nearby with lines going towards certain parts of the sketch. Then, you realized what he was doing. He was taking notes of your conversation. How cute. You smile a bit as you look off into the distance. The mountains around you both were slowly turning a pale orange while the sun was beginning to sink towards the mountain-embraced horizon. The cardboard clouds slowly creeped along, turning some various shades of purple and pink while they drifted. The sky was slowly changing as well, giving the scenery around you both a feeling of tranquility as the evening was slowly creeping towards nightfall. You could even see a few ‘stars’ beginning to appear as the night slowly was coming around. It was easy to get lost in the scenery before you. “So. You’re a dreamer then?” You are suddenly pulled back to this reality as Newton interrupts the blissful silence. You look back toward him and give him a confused look. “A dreamer?” “Yes, chum. You came from the ‘Orb of Dreamers’, right? So that would make you a dreamer.” “When did you come up with that assumption?” “I didn’t. That’s what the mythology books I read sometimes say. I quote, ‘Earth, or as the Omniverse calls it, the ‘Orb of Dreamers’. In which the occupants spend so much time asleep and dreaming. Their imaginations humming away, charged with creative energy.’ end quote.” Newton explained. “The book also said, like before, that ‘Earth’ is responsible for the creation of the entire imagisphere. Again I quote, ‘Their energy travels up through the ceribrumbilical cord to meld with all of the other dreamers energy. And from that energy, they make a planet. An abstract plane of wonderment. Filled with adventure and endless possibilities.’ , end quote.” He continued. You sit there in contemplative silence. “That’s what you are...right? A dreamer?” Newton cautiously prods. “. . .” You sigh a bit. “It explains a lot actually.” You say, confusing Newton. “Explains what?” “What happens when I fall asleep.” You explain before continuing. “Everytime I fall asleep, something happens. Like...things pop into existence. I woke up once after dozing off in Clive’s factory to find some new robots standing next to me. Clive claimed he didn’t build them and I said I didn’t either. Then, I went to sleep in the Gardens and a flowerbed had grown up around me so quickly while I was dozing. It’s just...weird stuff happens when I take a nap or sleep.” You admit. Newton seemed to blink before getting a bit excited. “Does that make you a creator then??” He says ethustiactally. “Crumbs! That means you can make anything real! You’re like a creator or a maker or--” “Shush, Newton!” You hush him harshly, in which you feel immediately bad after he recoils.
You simply let out a stressful sigh before continuing.
“I’m sorry for snapping at you...it’s just...well--I don’t really know what’s going on...nor even how I got here. I really don’t want a lot of excess attention on me. So for now, I’m (Name) the Human not (Name) the Dreamer, okay? Please, let’s just keep this revelation between the two of us.” you finish. Newton looked thoughtful before nodding in agreement. “Okay, chum! You can count on me! Not one word will slip past my wire, not one!” He pridefully states before writing more information down in his personal notebook. You merely roll your eyes at the overly excited lightbulb before looking back at the sunset.
Then, a sudden thought comes to your mind. “Hey, Newton?” “Yes, chum?” “When we get back to Stitchem Manor, do you think you can lend me one of those ‘mythology’ books? I would like to see what this realm thinks of my homeworld.” Newton perks up at that request. “Sure thing! There’s a couple of books in my personal library I can lend to you! I may even search for more information on the topic if you want!” He offers. “Just a book will be fine for now, Newton. Thanks for the offer, though.” “Anytime, my chummy friend!” You stare at the horizon as Newton scribbles down notes nearby. A smile slowly creeping across your face at the potential possibility of being able to find your way home. Looking into myths and legends may be a stretch, but a lead is a lead.
So you just enjoy your time on the mountain. Thinking about the things Newton told you and the secret you both are now keeping between yourselves.
Who knew being a human would lead to such a conundrum such as this. And all over your biology too, who would’ve thunk?
