Candy Cane Snail (Liguus virgineus)

Found only on the island of Hispaniola, the Candy Cane Snail is a small species of tree-dwelling, air-breathing snail named for its colourful and highly elaborate shell, which typically spirals to the right of the snail's body and is covered in distinct coloured bands (which may be yellow, white, orange, green, red or black, and are essentially "painted" onto the developing shells of young individuals as their shells are produced by colour-secreting glands on the muscular structure called the mantle at the shell's base.) While the colouration and structure of this species' distinctive shell is well-documented, very little information on its biology is available; reportedly, Candy Cane Snails feed almost exclusively on lichens that they scrape off of the branches of trees they inhabit using a spiny tongue-like structure called a radula (although they may also feed on bark) and descend to the ground during periods of wet weather to lay eggs beneath loose, damp soil. Like many land snails Candy Candy Snails must keep their soft, fragile bodies damp to remain healthy, and when faced with prolonged periods of dry weather they enter a dormant state, retreating into their shells and secreting a stretchy membrane of mucus, known as an epiphragm, around the shell's opening to minimalize water loss through evaporation.

SWEENAIL (Sweet + Snail) - Fairy/Bug type.

Is based on a Liguus virgineus, also known as Candy cane snail, and is based on candy. Its shell is based on a corncandy sweet. One of the most common candies to give on halloween.

And the concept of the bears is inspired by the Leucochloridium paradoxum parasite that infects the eyes of snails, combined with the concept of gummy worms.

I agree I agree :DDD ...I must admit, the only snails I've never really seen other snails besides the basic ones that you'd see in your backyard or in the mountains.... the Hinea brasiliana reminds me of vintage uranium/Vaseline glass!! Those are all really cool :DD the Janthina janthina reminds me of cornflowers and hydrangeas, and the liguus virgineus colors are really cool, I didn't expect their colors tho, it looks like someone painted on them. Are they actually naturally like that???

heh heh heh, I'm glad you liked them~ they look like candy or like they're decorated with gouache, don't they? in fact, they have such a coloring because of chromophores (you know, which also have leaves), active throughout the life of snails, which is why they are so colorful<333 so yes, this is their natural coloring, but they are endemic, so you can't see them much where~ and they are endangered, yes

Land Snails-Liguus virgineus

Liguus virgineus, also known as the Candy Cane Snail or the "'Virgin Liguus'", is a species of air-breathing land snail. These snails live on trees and feed on moss, fungi and microscopic algae covering the bark. This species is native to the Caribbean island of Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic), east of Cuba.  However, over the past 25 years there have been at least three separate reports of living specimens being found in the Florida Keys (Key Largo, Long Key, Key West).

Shells of Liguus virgineus can reach a length of 30–60 millimeters (1.2–2.4 in). The background color of the shell is white or creamy-white, with thin bright spiral stripes of orange, purple and yellow. Shells of these land snails for years have been over-harvested for the shell craft trade. The destruction of the forest habitat and the commercial over collecting could lead to the extinction of this species. Now harvesting and selling these shells is forbidden by the law.
