I think about this light novel a bit too much..... my friends are probably annoyed by the amount of time I mentioned it in conversations.

So here are some of my favourite scenes, there will be spoilers

Fukuzawa! that all I have to say, this...I'm lost for word, it such a powerful scene and should have been in the anime (im mourning)

This whole scene is really good, like Ranpo knows and Dazai know he knows, this silence stare and then Ranpo okay cool, he could of spilled the bean but nah he's above that. - written by a Ranpo fan

WORDS COULD NOT EXPLAIN HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS SCENE. THIS WAS WHY I READ THE LIGHT NOVEL. WE COULD BE HERE ALL DAY AS I EXPLAIN WHY DAZAI ENTRANCE EXAM WAS DONE DIRTY IN THE ANIME (still love the anime)

Dazai being 'huh how do you use a gun kunikida??? I never used this in my life before' is so silly

Idk why but that fact that kunikida, a man who is so strict on following schedules and doing work literally not being to even leave bed just hurt me so much. is it obvious that I like kunikida character?

Seeing people say Jinshi is not all that and how his relevance doesn’t make sense HURTS ME… 😓

Guys, he’s a complex character, trust me 💔💔  People often seem to forget that he’s not just a silly ‘airhead’ in love. Even Maomao MULTIPLE times acknowledges & mentions how scary and intelligent Jinshi is. Like, he realized Maomao was literate in the matter of a few mins and then he used that against her cuz he realized she must’ve been the one who warned Lady Gyoukyo

And then there’s just some people who hate him cuz he’s twisted & say that makes him a sh*tty leading character

Which i don’t get?? Of course the leads of a thriller mystery will be manipulative or sly. Or at the very least flawed to some capacity. Even Maomao herself is almost equally twisted and tends to be self serving Them both being flawed is what makes them intriguing characters. They both have their vices that they acknowledge - vices that add another layer of complexity upon their characters. Do you imagine how uninteresting this series would become if Jinshi was seriously JUST a silly lover boy and Maomao was a simple girl ready to help ANYTIME AND ANY DAY instead of being the way she is? This story’s charm comes not only just from the intriguing setting/mysteries but also how these flawed, yet interesting, characters act and think in said settings.

My Opinions on the Different KumoDesu Adaptations.

-Overall

The Light Novel is the best, both the Manga and Anime Adaption unfortunately bungled the Plot in different ways. Cutting out the Human Side (Manga Adaption) or Rushing the Plot (Anime Adaption) messes with the Pacing and Foreshadowing.

-Web Novel vs Light Novel:

The author himself said that the Web Novel is sort of the “bad end” where the Light Novel is the “good/true end” of the series. Therefore I haven’t read the WN but only the LN because the WN sounds depressing.

-Manga:

The Manga cuts out the changing perspective which messes with the narrative (particularly foreshadowing and world building that Shun is responsible for) a lot. Also, though I never wanna put down someone’s art (because I’m sure they will improve with time), the character design changes are really bad looking. My personal pet peeve will forever be giving Kumoko three body segments making her NOT A SPIDER by definition. But I must give credit where credit is due, paneling is really hard and no one talks about the skill it takes turning a mainly text media into a manga layout and they did a great job on that front.

-Anime:

The human side does not suck the Anime just adapted it poorly. The Anime tries to cram in a lot of plot so they cut out most of the fun character interactions that make you like them (mostly Shun and Katia’s Relationship and Childhood) but also somehow missed and fumbled major plot points that are super important later on (Bee Fight, Leston Rescue, and Kumoko’s Reaction To Maxing Taboo as Top Three). It was fun if you know the series though, just to see parts of it animated was nice. Also simplified versions of the Light Novel designs are appreciated.

it’s so weird when a post is explicitly chengxian and then people add lwj into the mix.

I blame CQL and the animation for not sticking to the relationship between wwx/jc faithfully and creating that whole extra subplot of jc/wq in cql bc truly, in the novel when it focuses on wwx/jc friendship, it’s silly teens that are just so intimate and knowledgeable about one another while being blurred with the strange history of their parents and the inherent competitiveness they both have and it’s way more than what could be viewed as just romantic ship or whatever

The conviction wwx has that jc will return with help when trapped in the cave, jc believing in wwx’s words that they are twin prides, jc having faith in wwx finding a core solution, wwx seeing jc’s scars and promising to get rid of them — it’s the little things in their interactions as people who grew up and trust and love each other to the point of giving up their lives for each other!!

it’s frustrating to see a good chengxian post and it being reblogged or commented with other characters that a) were never mentioned in the post b) removes chengxian and makes it some other ship

SPOILERS for the Dark Era LN because i'm slightly rambling about stuff they missed.

Finished the Dark Era light novel a few days back and why did the anime choose to omit the fact that Mori was the one who orchestrated the whole Mimic Mafia and Special Division conflict, and was the one who tipped Mimic off with the location of Oda's orphan children?... Because that's kind of important since it's the REASON WHY THE ENTIRE PLOT OCCURS.

There's so much more depth here with the reason for Dazai leaving the Mafia. Mori's decision to sacrifice Oda and the orphans in the pursuit of a Skilled Business Permit and him trying to find a reason to live in amongst death and chaos of the Port Mafia turning into trying to save people as a reason to live. The whole conversation Dazai and Mori have adds so much to their characterisation and it makes us able to understand the key differences between the two - and why Dazai could never in this universe be Mori's successor. It shows Mori to be very cruel and calculated in the pursuit of benefiting the Mafia where he trades human lives for those benefits, something which in this case Dazai doesn't agree with because Oda is his friend and matters more to him. Dazai's friendship with Oda (and Ango) is an example of genuine human empathy and connection that transcends the roles they are boxed into, which in part makes him in this universe unable to continue with the practices the Mafia utilises. This is especially interesting in comparison to Beast - where B!Oda is not in the PM and therefore B!Dazai never makes this friendship and also never gets told to be on the side that saves people, and without this realisation he is moulded into the next PM boss (or something like that).

We also lose so much of Dazai's emotionality in the anime, which portrays him in a very monotonous emotional state in comparison. I mean think about Oda's description of Dazai's face when the Mimic soldier has the gun to his head - his expression being that of an upset child or something on those lines. Those little details are really important for him and for the reader understanding Dazai (at least to me.)

Also some of the scenes change the literal setting - like before Oda's orphans blow up there's a literal CAR CHASE in the book with Oda literally jumping onto vehicles. Insane stuff I only wish I could have seen animated.

The conversations Oda had with Gide too, which actually helps understand WHY Mimic do what they do to some extent. They're actually really interesting (also yet another example of BSD's anti war messaging which I may eventually have to do an analysis on because it's really intriguing) and I found it really cool that we actually got some backstory for them.

And the Ango details. Just the stuff about how he ended up in the Mafia (which was eventually revealed to be orchestrated by the Special Division) shows how truly capable he is and yet we kind of don't get to see that at all?

Sometimes I think the anime adaptation is like just fine or something but then I read these LNs and see how much they just didn't include that is genuinely so important to either the plot or the characterisation of people in these stories. So then I'm just annoyed.

they have to be written by one of two people and both of those people are itotypes on ao3 or my irl best friend😐

ok /hj /hj i have a very specific flowery and poetic writing style i prefer (think song of achilles esque) and the story has to normally read like a shakespearean tragedy, both with the writing style and the plot. i’m very picky and tend to drop things after the first few paragraphs if i dislike it😭 due to these narrow credentials like 90% of fics don’t really fit the mold of what i like to read so i don’t venture out and read fic
