Jesse Update: Week 1

It’s hard to believe that our little guy is a week old. It’s crazy to believe we’ve been living this life for an entire week. Jesse spent the first four and a half days of his life in NICU in an incubator, with an IV and feeding tube, and under UV lights. Given his gestational age, Jesse was doing great from the moment he was born. He could breathe 100% on his own. He immediately showed us he could breast and bottle feed, although IV and feeding tube were necessary because he tired before he could finish a complete feeding. All his systems were working great and he was strong. Doctors and nurses would try to prepare us for worst case scenarios, and each time Jesse proved them wrong or accomplished his task in record time.

Once Jesse was weaned from his IV fluids and no longer needed the phototherapy lights to balance his bilirubin’s level, he moved from NICU to Special Care Nursery. Special Care is a step down from NICU where the care is slightly less intensive. Special Care focuses on getting babies to feed well and regularly as this is often the last thing keeping them at the hospital. In Special Care Jesse has his own room so Andrew and I have some privacy as we spend time with our baby boy. There is a couch that goes flat so that one person can spend the night which I will occasionally do.  Jesse is still in an incubator which limits the time we hold him to feeding times, although the temperature is lowered a little bit each day so that soon he will out of the incubator and we can have more hands-on time. Jesse is still hooked up to a bunch of monitors which is actually a huge comfort knowing that if he stops breathing or his heartrate drops that someone will immediately know and address the issue. Each meal, Jesse tries to eat a full meal from breast or bottle, but he is rarely able to do so because he is so tiny and tires so quickly so he is fed the remainder of his meal through a feeding tube.

In order for Jesse to graduate Special Care and come home where he belongs, he must put on some weight, regulate his own body temperature, and regularly complete full feedings by breast or bottle. These are some large hurdles to overcome, and we fully expect for him to stay in Special Care for another couple of weeks.

Jesse is an adorable, non fussy baby, he is strong and gets stronger every day. After I held him the first time, my first coherent thought was, “He is tiny, but perfect,” and I 100% stand by that statement.

Being a cyster is mad hard 😔☹️😞 we have mood swings like 75% of the time. So imagine when we PMS , which for me can be 2-3 weeks out of the month. I have irregular periods, especially when I'm stressed. One month can be minor pains and the next can be pain so bad I need 1,600mg of ibuprofen 🥺 just to get through the day. My chronic fatigue is bad enough, imagine when I'm pmsing 😩 we gain weight, bloat if we even look or smell a certain ingredient. I have gained and lost weight dramatically in the last 3 years. I am comfortable with my body rn, sometimes too comfortable.. yet we all have those days, weeks or even months deep down we are not. I have to always remind myself, I have PCOS. PCOS does not have me! #cysterhood #cyster4life #jnyc
