When Jemma sets out to prove a psychological theory regarding making men fall in love with her, she ends up choosing Fitz to be her "subject". Little does she know that Fitz has become the unfortunate pawn of two friends, and a bet to see if he can get a girl to hate him by the end of ten dates.

For lifetimeofreading as part of the "A Whole New World" more than 5k fs exchange over on tumblr. They requested a "How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days" AU, but I've never seen the movie, so using summaries from friends and the trailer, I attempted to craft a story. I hope you enjoy it!

Aww yay! I wondered how show!Fitz & comics!Jemma got along. Poor Jemma, in any universe she never interprets the situation correctly when Fitz avoids her lol.

nooooo, poor thing. at least she doesn’t think he hates her for v long this time, lol, bc his curiosity about her gets the best of him. (he just sort of focuses v intently above her neck, lmao.)

Well Formed and Symmetrical :)

I have a few headcanons about how show!Fitz gets along with comics!Jemma, actually! 

he has trouble speaking when he first arrives because jesus h christ Jemma’s wearing a skintight superhero suit how is he supposed to form words. (he has no idea how to process this, bc this story takes place sometime after FZZT but long before the end of s1, so he has far from figured out his feelings for his best friend yet.) basically, he can’t look straight at her for fear of… problems.

poor comics!Jemma is sort of hurt about this - she senses that something’s off, although she doesn’t know what it is - and feels very self-conscious about being around him (esp. once she manages to get it out of him that she & “his” Jemma look very different). but she still gravitates towards him anyway. she can’t help herself, even if she misses “her” Fitz terribly. being around show!Fitz just sorta makes her feel better.

I LOVE all of this but esp the hair thing. I can imagine teenage Margaret asking her dad to brush and braid her hair when she needs comfort. And then he does it the night before she gets married & they both get really emotional.

AWWWWWWWWWWW yes, I love that!

once she’s gone to sleep, Fitz curls around Jemma in their bed (a part of him is itching to do busywork in their private lab - which they have in lieu of a full garage - but he knows that Jemma will wrangle him back into bed if he tries it). after a long silence: “I’m gonna miss her.” “Me, too.”

2. What does your id want? Do you ever give in?

kissing. lots and lots of kissing. so much kissing. all the kissing.

also pining. and post-coital cuddling. and more sex than I’m ever comfortable writing. I give in to the first three, but I fight my id more often on the latter, lol. 

8. What parts of writing a fic do you think are a chore?

UGH PLOT. PLOT IS MY NEMESIS. the more I can avoid plot, the better. plot is gross and hard. kissing is much more fun for everyone involved.

(also, pretty much any scene that doesn’t involve either of FitzSimmons, but that is extremely rare because usually I’m writing from only their POVs. and, well, them fighting - but that can also be cathartic to write.)

Fandom sympathies already kind of naturally gravitate to the male in a pairing & the show helps this along by having Fitz be the pining/emotionally accessible one. Jemma, being logical, scientifically minded, is less easy to empathize with. I personally love your characterization of Jemma in HiD and think it's spot on but I can see how some might find her denial and rationalizing plus comparing Fitz to past lovers less enticing than Fitz's hopelessly romantic pov. That said, if the roles were reversed in both the show & your fic, I'm sure Jemma would get lambasted for being all starry eyed, I'll-die-for-a-man, woe how unfeminist blah blah. The female half of an otp can never win.

*sigh* yeah, I just... I don’t get it. and I really do blame the writers/producers for being completely oblivious about how poorly they’re presenting Jemma’s POV. which I was sort of trying to comment on/counteract with HiD, but... you can only lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink. :-)

Bobbi & Fitz! I'd love to see them interact in s3 (and read it in fic, especially yours). She's close to Mack and Jemma, who both adore Fitz, so it only stands to reason that they'd get on. :)

well I wouldn’t say she’s close to Jemma (with whom we’ve barely seen her interact), but since Mack is definitely one of Bobbi’s closest friends it stands to reason that they’d’ve talked about Fitz at one point or another. :-) and I get to imply a bit of Mack & Bobbi’s friendship in this scene, which is nice! I like their relationship, too. and I’d be totally up for Bobbi & Fitz canon interactions/friendship! they’re just so different that I think it’d be interesting - which is both one of the fun parts and challenging parts of writing this scene, haha.

☠: something i found challenging

woof, honestly, just finishing a whole draft was the most challenging part!! I think having it all be written in tiny snippets was really helpful in that respect - the damn thing felt like it took forever to write, but each section was never more than a couple thousand words at once, which meant that each writing session I did could sort of feel like a bite-size piece. but, yeah, no, just actually completing it was really tough! it was the longest thing I’d ever completed, period. (heaven help me, ha.)

ngl, that’s my favorite line in the whole fic. when I got the prompt my whole brain just went “of course. of course she would,” lol.
