Holding On and Letting Go: A Journey of Family and Time
The topic had gone beyond mere exhaustion. It wasn't depression, but rather a sense of being overwhelmed. If you asked him what was weighing on him, he probably wouldn't even have an answer. Is it burnout caused by today's problems? "I'm not burned out, and I won't be. I have the strength to keep going," he would say. There was a fatigue in his eyes, clearly not a personal one. Was it a fatigue related to his responsibilities? When he did some introspection, he would explain these feelings.
"My issue isn’t my responsibilities; on the contrary, the areas where I have responsibilities bring me joy beyond measure. How can the concept of family not make me happy? Tell me, man! I had a wonderful family, and now I’m going to have an even greater one with my wife and child. Can you believe it? I'm going to have a child! I’m soaring with happiness, and the responsibilities that come with that happiness—can they ever be a burden? Not at all. I do worry about finances a bit. Thank God, we're doing okay, and while it's good to be grateful, don't we deserve more than just 'okay'? I can’t help but think about that. Now, because we’re okay, I can't take any risks that might derail us. I didn’t realize that all the risks I took when I was single were time-bound. I’m not angry at those who guided me; I had mapped out a path—whether it was right or wrong, I can’t say. I had a great time, and there's nothing more valuable to me. And now, I’m heading towards an even better time. We can’t wait to hold our son in our arms. This is what I mean when I say time—if only it could be pulled forward or pushed back. But life is such that, given the option, would anyone really want to push time forward? It’s a big risk, who knows. Why would someone want to go back? To retrieve what was lost? Time, man, let them bring back time. Let them bring back time so I can feel more at ease now, because, you see, I would use one-third of the time I spent playing Pollyanna back then to take a financial leap and take risks alone. In this life where there’s now two of us, I can’t afford to act irresponsibly and take risks. That’s not a risk—it’s disrespectful. Taking this risk together might be the ultimate act of trust, or maybe not, but it’s not about starting a journey together and continuing if things don’t work out. I don’t want it to fail, which is why I don’t talk about it with my wife. I don’t want to burden her with the risk of something not working out. I want her shoulders to be light and her face always smiling. Is this selfishness? The selfishness of love? But I can't bear to see her in this lousy state of mind. Even when there’s nothing wrong, there’s still something wrong. It’s such a classic statement from today’s generation, but damn, it’s so true. Even when there’s nothing wrong, there’s still something wrong, and it’s true. So many problems without a name, and some aren’t even problems. We ended up as a generation caught in the middle. As kids of the '90s, we still have the ability to pluck the good moments with tweezers. The generation after us sees things more directly, but if I may offer a small criticism, what we express seems more direct to them. What generation will my son belong to? Z is already gone, and we’re not quite in the Jetsons era yet. His generation is dangling in the air—let’s see where it lands. Consider this a little joke about having a son. My dear son.
Sorry, I’m getting off track. Wow, how many rounds have we had dad? We’ve finished the whole bottle already. By the way, like I said, I apologize. My thoughts aren’t jumping from branch to branch, nor are there a thousand foxes running around in my head, but my thoughts won’t stop. That’s why I can’t pour out my heart as if I only have one problem. I hope you understand me. If not, no worries—I just don’t want to bore you, I know you faced with these kind of thoughts and many more probably. Is that why you’re drinking faster than I am? Waiter, could you come here, please…”
As the bottle arrived at the table, his father raised his glass towards his son, toasting to his future grandson. It felt as though his own youth was sitting across from him, having a conversation with the father he never got to meet. His throat tightened for a moment. He paused, sighed, and with a smile, as if he were gently placing his hand on his son's shoulder, the words spilled out as their glasses clinked together: "Don’t worry, son. I’m here—whenever you need me, no matter what, I’m always by your side. To my dear grandson… to your son…”
For a moment, the smiles on their faces touched eternity, and time stood still as their glasses, filled with just a finger of rakı, hovered in the air. It was the last sip of the night—no worries, no troubles, only happiness remained. The bottle arrived at the table again, the glasses were filled once more, and the waiter was asked to refresh the melon slices. Cheers.

According to WealthCounsel, 35% of American adults have either personally experienced or know someone who has personally experienced family conflict as a result of not having an estate plan or will in place.
If you pass away without a will -commonly referred to as "dying intestate," the courts will ultimately decide who inherits your assets, which results in estate disputes. Your family will experience time-consuming and expensive probate court proceedings that may also arise family drama and conflict.
To avoid this scenario, you should create a will or have an estate plan and keep it updated regularly. Additionally, you should better understand estate planning components and why it is critical to have one to keep your family out of court and out of conflict if something happens to you.
Join me for an Estate Planning webinar in which I will go through everything in detail.
