Proposal
Concept Proposal for Better Lighting on Campus
February 21st, 2017
Joshua Nehs
The purpose of this proposal is to convince you and the higher ups at UW Stout to consider making our current environment safer for everyone at night. Some places on campus have more light than others, and it can be dangerous for students to walk down specific paths if it is not considered to be a popular way to walk.
Current State
As I am sure you know, there are sexual assaults and robberies that take place on campus. This is horrible, and I understand that there is no way to entirely get rid of this problem. However I believe just a few more posts and lights hanging from University walls could help tremendously.
Adding Lights to Improve Safety
I would like a situation for students who live both on and off campus to feel safe as they walk to their desired destination. Adding more lights could even improve how safe the students feel, as well as make potential criminals afraid to act.
Conclusion
I understand budgets come into play here, and not everything is realistically feasible. I hope I have at least made my point though, and helped prove that at least one student thinks this would be incredibly beneficial.

Letter, Memo, Email
Formal Letter:
Febuary 9th, 2017
Jason Allred, CEO of Midwest Sparkleen
Midwest Sparkleen
4000 S. Howell Ave.
Milwaukee, WI, 53207
Dear Mr. Allred:
PolicyPlan will not be renewing it’s contract with Midwest Sparkleen after this month. With the change of ownership, we have found that the change in the company does not match that of ours. There were many instances in which we felt previous ownership would have handled things differently and more efficiently.
Some examples of these instances, would be that offices are no longer cleaned regularly, and your service would need to be called at the minimum of six times in order to do the job that they are hired for. We have found toxic chemicals left out in the hallway on several occasions, and despite being told this would no longer happen, it has continued.
The staff has expressed their viewpoint, and we think it best for both parties if we do not continue business together. We hope you find success with future clients.
Sincerely,
Joshua Nehs
Internal Memo:
PolicyPlan Insurance Services
Date: February 9th, 2017
To: Jason Allred, CEO of Midwest Sparkleen
From: Joshua Nehs Subject: Contract Renewal
We are no longer going to work with Midwest Sparkleen after this month’s contract expires. There has been too many problems and everybody decided this is for the best.
They have never done their work consistently, and whenever we need them it takes at least six phone calls in order to get them to do anything. They have left toxic chemicals out on multiple occasions and they are overall a hazard to our business.
After contacting the company, we were assured things would change, however we never saw that change. It is about time to start looking at new cleaning companies to pick up the mantle.
If anyone has questions, email me at [email protected].
Email:
Date: February 9th, 2017
To: Jason Allred, CEO of Midwest Sparkleen
From: Joshua Nehs Subject: Contract Renewal
PolicyPlan Insurance Services has decided not to renew our contract with your company, Midwest Sparkleen, after this month’s expiration.
After problems of not cleaning when it expected or asked over telephone, to leaving toxic chemicals out in public hallways, we have come to the decision that this agreement is not suited for us. We have also experienced one of your employees leaving our company doors open after leaving at midnight. This is unacceptable behavior to us, and thus leading to our decision to remove ourselves.
If you have any questions email me at [email protected].

X-File (Collaborative Assignment of my choice)
If I was George, I would report the radiation to my company. The negative effects that the company would receive and potential job loss would be hard but the radiation could have extremely bad effects on the people that would be living in the new apartment developments. Before hand I would tell the company I would want to make sure the Geiger counter was accurate, the Geiger counter did show high levels of radiation but I would still want to get a second opinion on the matter to verify the levels were accurate. If the information was accurate I would then feel the need to tell the company about the radiation problem to determine a proper course of action. If this information were to get out some other way, it is possible the company's reputation could be effected negatively. If some random person knew about it, who knows who else might? I also believe peoples health is more important than someone's job or business. If I kept this hidden there is always the chance it could get out and it would be worse for everyone involved and the company could go out of business anyways. I would tell my company and see what they say about the situation and suggest the build was stopped, radiation could greatly affect the lives of the people who would live there and could cause a lot of problems down the road.

Assignment Due 4/6 on Pg. 340-341
Right away we could check into a hotel in Chateau Frontenac to get a good feel for the iconic hotel. We could spend the first day checking out the pool, ballroom, bar, lounge, fitness center, and the various rooms open for guests. At night we would walk through Old Quebec, North America's oldest streets.
The next day we could attend the Carnaval de Quebec. There are tons of activities and foods to try so the whole three days could be spent there. Rachel would go to Montmorency Falls and cross the suspension bridge. We would all then go to the Aquarium du Quebec in the afternoon.
On the third day we would all go to La Citadelle, the largest British built fortress in North America. We would then go to lunch at Sapristi. In the afternoon we would stroll the streets of Quartier Petit-Champlain.
On the last day we would spend the morning in the district of Grande Allee and then go to Basilica of Ste-Anne de Beaupre. In the afternoon we would go to lle d'Orleans and visit some of the villages on that island.
Research Question: How many people on campus are effected by substance abuse? (Directly or Indirectly)
We would begin by assembling an E-mail with an anonymous survey that would be sent to everyone on campus. We would create fliers with information and statistics about substance abuse and where to get help on campus. On the flier we would include the survey link as well as E-mail addresses to get in contact with us personally so we can write firsthand accounts. We expect to receive a good pool of students to respond, which would give us a good representation of the campus population. We could use the numbers to form statistics such as:
% of students who have had substance abuse problems
% of students who are currently having substance abuse problems
% of students who know someone who has substance abuse problems
% of students who have a family member with substance abuse history
Number of days a week the student drinks
Number of drinks the student has per day
After the survey has been completed, we would then follow up if they would volunteer and ask them more detailed questions to better understand how that person was effected by substance abuse to understand the root cause of why this happens. We could then use police reports to determine the number of violations there have been and use that in correlation with the survey results.

Collaborative Assignment Due 4/27 on Pg. 444
War on Cancer
The war on cancer refers to the effort in finding a cure for cancer by increasing the research to better understand cancer biology and the development of more effective treatments. The goal of these efforts is to eliminate cancer as a major cause of death. The enemy of the war on Cancer is the cancer itself since there is no cure known currently. There are many "weapons" that can be used such as surgeries to remove the cancer or drugs to shrink it/kill it. I believe that we need to move in full force to find a cure for cancer, it effects such a large amount of people in devastating ways. There may be some cases where civil rights are violated during the fight to find a cure, for example, who gets into certain studies for certain treatment types could potentially violate civil rights. Another metaphor for the war on cancer could be "The battle for a cure". Including the word battle makes the metaphor feel like it hits close to home since the current cancer patients are battling cancer. The battle for a cure changes it to a more accurate term. It is hard to fight a war against something that you cannot speak to or disagree with. However, battle is more accurate. A battle is a struggle against, whether it be something sentient or not the term can still apply. The only negative to changing the term "war on cancer" to "battle for a cure" is potentially how serious people take it. War is a powerful word, and thus garners more attention; attention that cancer arguably deserves.
