Keep in mind that the original Expedition was for volunteers only and was considered a potential one way trip. Danial who would have been incredibly valuable was denied permission to go.

This means that no only do you have to be willing to volunteer for a mission where it was likely you would never see your friends and family again but that you couldn't be too vital to Earth or too tied to the daily running of the mountain. Which by this point means people smart enough to be useful but with personalities not desired if there is a option. To me this means of course personalities like Rodney and Kavanaugh would end up on the mission. In fact if you look at most of the Scientists you end up with ones that are very theoretical and more used to focusing on the Science then group work or making bonds with others. We see this a lot in scientists who hide new discoveries so they can be the ones to make the next great finding. It's not about advancing the group they are looking for personal acclaim.

Rodney has in universe spent a lot of time learning the mechanics of the Stargate as well as working mainly with Ancient tech. His knowledge was invaluable but he was effectively black listed from every working in the mountain again. This mission was the only way for him to advance and get access to the new science. But he has learned he needs to work with others and can not burn his bridges here. Which is I think why he joins a gate team the same way Sam does while still being head of the Science Dept. He must make himself a irreplaceable asset the to mission or he could be shut out again.

Kavanaugh, is very much a early Rodney who has not had the life lesson of seeing people beyond the science. As is typical of engineers in my experience he also gives off nurodiverget vibes. To me it reads as some level of Autism in his focus on black and white rules, inability to take social cues even when they get increasingly pointed, and focus on technical problem.

Regardless like Rodney did in SG1, Kavanaugh's problem solving was not wrong in the end it just lacked empathy in that saving everyone was not the first goal. It was a good episode because yes it did give this perfect parallel of how Rodney was able to help SG1 save Teal'c but only after offering solutions that would cause him to be shunned and eventually forced out of Atlantis.

I do appreciate that the writers after spending that much time making us hate his character did show that later when he was working on the Waystation and I think the Daedalus it did look like Kavanaugh had grown as a character and had a decent working relationship with those around him. The growth allows people to see that there is more going on overall then just first impressions and typecast characters.

I was wondering if you had any Stargate fanfic recommendations, my favorite characters from the Franchise are Daniel and Zelenka (I don't know why, I guess I have a thing for sweet nerdy scientist guys), but otherwise I'm really not sure what I'd be looking for since I'm new to Stargate Fanfiction and Fandom in general.

Hi! Sorry this is such a late response! Welcome to the fandom by the way! Since Stargate has been around a long time there's a lot of fanfiction to explore. You can find pretty much anything you like.

Okay well I mostly read hurt/comfort and whump fics so all my recs are in those genres. I don't read romance or smut or super fluffy stuff so I can't be of help there. I do read a LOT of Daniel Jackson fics (he's my favorite).

I noticed you are a Stargate SG-1 fan.

What is your favourite episode of the series?

Obviously you have good taste in TV shows so you know that there were many funny, enjoyable and important episodes, but I am someone that likes quotes, ethics, and communication, so I would have to say Enemy Mine (S7E7).

It's nothing greatly special to the story line, but this episode reminded me of some important life lessons on patience, understanding and the willingness to meet people on their terms.

But there is so much to like about this show. Because I'm in a Teal'c mood, here are some honorable mentions for the category of amusement and also, because, though sometimes Teal'c may not say much, his actions and facial expressions say it all.

Unnatural Selection (S6E12) - The ice cream scene. Loved how quick he pulled it away from Jack.

Window of Opportunity (S4E6) - Loved that after being hit so many times by the door he finally had a little bit of a fun reaction.

Seth (S3E2) - Really just because of Teal'c and his joke.

what the hell, I have some free time and love a good categorization system. Please enjoy a cross-fandom selection of only the finest genfics, each loosely identified by a broader category. this is a non-exhaustive category list. in the spirit of 'tasting flight' all of these are under 5k wordcount and they are all from different fandoms.

Hijinks and Shenanigans. Fics where the purpose is just to show the characters doing something completely ridiculous. For this category, it is truly my pleasure to recommend For These I Watch Tonight by leupagus. MCU Captain America, 2k, T, set with the Howling Commandos before they lost Bucky, which is not a story about a cow. I've read this at least ten times and it still makes me laugh.

Colliding Crossover. Fics where two canons that could conceivably coexist bump into each other. Distinct from Integrated Crossover (where one cast is made native to another canon) and Portal Crossover (where canons set in separate universes crash together). I feel like I can't not recommend a Doctor Who fic since that's a canon made for doing exactly this. So have The Doctor Shakes His Asteroid by Emachinescat. Doctor Who + Phineas & Ferb, G, 4k. The Doctor and Rose end up at the Shooting Star Milkshake Bar.

What If These Two Weirdos Were Friends? What it says on the tin. Could be crossover or canon-compliant. For this I would like to provide The Roommate of +10 Confusion by Grevling. Foxtrot + Calvin & Hobbes, G, 3k, where Jason Fox and Calvin (and Hobbes!) end up as freshman year roommates in college and learn to get along. Eventually.

Casefic. A fic that captures the flavor of a canon episode or plot. It's just creeping over the limit but since most casefics tend to run longer and I can't not mention them, I'm going to pitch One of Those Days by Mad_Maudlin anyways. Stargate Atlantis, T, 5k. Fun narrative style depicting Rodney McKay getting kidnapped and spending WAY too many hours awake.

Character Study. Let's crawl into a character's head, and, often, write out the entire unprovided life story! Go read the greatest good by dudski. Pixar's The Incredibles, G, 2k, a look at the life of Helen "Elastigirl" Parr, leading up to the movie. Tender and thoughtful and earnest.

Family and Friends. Different from What If These Two Weirdos Were Friends in my opinion because it's more about rolling around in a canon non-romantic dynamic than putting together a new possibility. I am well fed for this over in TMNT so I will gladly present Swimming Lessons by Flynne. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2003, G, 3k, several years after canon our cast takes a chill day to just go rafting on the river and play in the water.

Worldbuilding. Or, 'the evil corporation has to have an evil break room,' to paraphrase that one recent post. Anything looking to make something make sense or expand the world or pick apart a detail. My absolute favorite subgenre of this is 'fake academic papers', like An Excerpt From 'Road to Revolution: The Life and Times of Roy Mustang by sixpences. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, G, ~1k. A fake historical book looking back at the events of canon.

The Grim Side. Aka 'who has time for ROMANCE when we have WHUMP.' It's on the tame end of a spectrum which can very easily include torture but I'm pulling out an old favorite, Even His Escape is Torment by GreyLiliy. Red vs Blue, G, ~2k. Season 11 is just a hallucination Wash is having in prison.

The Mandalorian Chapter 12 rewatch thoughts

- I would like to thank them for keeping in din’s harried yet triumphant ‘hAH!!’ when he gets the explosives to stick to gideon’s ship in the ‘hey remember when this happened last season’ section, that was a nice gesture from the showrunners to me personally, I assume

- this episode actually helped me find more enjoyment in the last one, because it’s such a nice reassurance that even though they’re pulling in more stuff from other star wars media this show won’t suddenly stop being its own thing and mando won’t suddenly stop being himself and it’s very comforting to me somehow haha

- the small hesitation before din calls out “do you... do you have the wire?” lol lol lol he’s completely aware of the bizarreness of what he’s doing here but hey being alive is already so damn weird etc. 

the softness of his voice the whole way through and the fact that he never, never blames the baby for not being able to do what shouldn’t really be asked of him in the first place, tho... ;____;  

- the tiny exasperated head tilt din does when he realizes the hatch isn’t going to extend all the way fdslkfhasdlashfs  

- din is looking down at the baby the entire time while greef talks to the mechanics ❤️❤️❤️

(the baby seems pretty drawn to/excited to see greef again and mando seems to notice which is extremely cute. he’s becoming really good at tuning in with the kid) 

he also greets cara baby first in much the same way as he does peli, like he knows what the main attraction here is lol, they do a very sweet bro nod at each other. god I wish gina carano wasn’t so terrible imagine if we could just have this BrOTP without hesitations :( 

I think greef is actually a bit worried to begin with after seeing the ship, he sort of takes din in intently before he huffs a little laugh and grabs his arm. it must be a bit stressful to be his friend and not be able to see his expression right away when you worry something might be seriously wrong haha

- people are finally treating the baby like you would a real baby and it’s such a blessing, everyone talking and cooing at him and baby babbling back

(I wonder if greef has children of his own? he does have an undeniable air of experienced grandpa about him in this episode, it’s adorable)  

- din does so much talking -- unprompted, even! -- these days, it truly is an embarrassment of riches 

- capital E Emotional about this shot with IG-11 right behind din and cara inviting him into the school in front of him. some past carried with us into the future shit going on here  

IG-11′s legacy’s still got our back y’all :’) I swear to god if gideon blows up nevarro at some point I’m going to lose it 

the ‘oh yeah?/that so?’ way din leans his head back after she says “wait until you see inside” is also amazing

- baby reaching out his hand like ‘can have?’ is so polite ;______; he takes after his father (including in the ‘fool me twice, I’ll fuck you up’ department haha. listen you get one chance to be cool about it and then no more mr nice mando/baby)

- I can’t work out what anything on greef’s desk is supposed to be, but if that’s a computer it’s got to be older than even the razor crest lol

he truly has next to no defense against people he actually likes asking him for something huh lol. well a self care co-op mission clearly did him a world of good in this one at least it’s all fine

- “I’m starting to dehydrate, Boss” is an excellent line and delivered perfectly, I cackle every time (”You park your gills right there until I say otherwise” is a good runner up too) 

- it’s so nice to see the small moments of communication between them in this one after mando was so out of sync with the team in the last one (and tbf those guys didn’t even try to give him any pointers at all, they really left him to flounder through the whole thing if you watch it carefully haha)

- the mythrol’s jacket still looks so comfy, I want one

- aaaaah the way din says “I don’t like this” is just so... hnnngh it’s perfect, there’s a vulnerability and openness to it for a moment. greef glances over at him like he hasn’t heard him sound like this before too, which just sells it even more

you know shit’s fucked up when din djarin expresses an emotion without even being forced to by circumstance (I think what I mean is that it’s actually really rare for him to state how he feels about something just to do it, usually his communication is more practically oriented, more along ‘I think this is the best cause of action because of a and b’ lines, or like when he tells omera he’s grateful it’s... more to inform her of it and make sure she knows than to express himself? but he’s starting to do it more with people he trusts now and it gets me in the heart? man I’m finding this hard to articulate let’s move on lol)

- I really, really wonder about pershing’s position in all of this. his plea for the child’s life did sound genuine -- he did try to guard him with his own noodly scientist body when he thought din was out to hurt him, remember -- but is that only because he knows he’s in deep shit himself without the blood the baby can give? is he maybe not quite cool with whatever gideon has him doing? (he does sound quite strained when he talks about the ‘body’ rejecting the transfusion and the ‘volunteer’ potentially suffering the same fate... hm.)

idk why I want there to be something redeemable in him so bad, maybe it’s just my weird yet enduring attachment to ladon radim in stargate atlantis messing with me they’re kind of similar in some ways (yeah don’t ask me I don’t know either sometimes the heart wants what it wants in ways reason can’t explain)

- tfw ur literally launching yourself across a pool of boiling lava because you’re Dad and your baby’s in danger T__________T he just does not stop running towards that kid for even a single second help

- there’s something so innocently pure and... old fashioned? about the scene with mythrol and greef screaming the entire time they drive off the cliff, it feels like something out of a movie from like three decades ago. that whole segment feels a bit like that, it’s just there to be fun and that’s okay sometimes

- every dog fight in every movie should have a baby nonchalantly snacking on a cookie in them, it elevates the experience immeasurably (he squishes his nose a little bit with the macaron when he misses his mouth at one point, which is more than anyone should be expected to bear honestly)

I love that even all fixed up again the razor crest groans and creaks like an old tired thing when din makes it flip to dive, he 100% did take out a bunch of ferraris in his stalwart morris minor of a spaceship and I treasure him     

- there’s so much life and emotion in din’s voice here I can’t!!!! I simply can’t!!!! imagine if we get to hear him openly laugh one day, would I even survive it??!!!!

 also the kid makes such pitch perfect ‘having my lil nose wiped and whining about it’ baby noises when din uses his cape to clean him up (din does turn the autopilot on before he turns around to deal with it, for those who, like me, worry about these things) 

- between carson showing up and the stuff the droid talks about in the lesson they’re doing quite a bit of outer rim vs. core worlds theme building in this one, I wonder if this is going to ramp up more or what

- god but gideon’s theme SLAPS tho

Hi hello yes I actually found your blog while I was looking for Ronon Dex whump, something there is not nearly enough of, and I just wanted to say that should you ever want to share your thoughts about him, whump-related or otherwise, I'm around to hear them,,, I care him very much (which is why I like to see him hurt... funny how that works).

OHOHOHOHOHO DID SOMEONE SAY THE MAGIC WORDS “RONON WHUMP”????? And yes there is not NEARLY enough Ronon whump!!! Buckle up I don’t think you know what you’ve unleashed by offering to let me talk about this XD i have 43 (i counted thats not an exaggeration) unfinished fics where i whump this man so i have A Lot of Thoughts on this so i’ll try to keep my headcanons and general thoughts from getting mixed up so here we go (also I haven’t actually seen past season 3ish but I know like everything)

Just general thoughts

I just love the team dynamic in general the actors had great chemistry with each other

They don’t whump Ronon enough and that is A Crime.    

But when they do whump him OH BOY ITS GOOD

Just off the top of my head I can think of     the episode where John and Elizabeth were possessed by those people who     wanted to kill each other and ronon got SHOT that was dope especially when     it showed the surgery but I was so mad there was no aftercare

Also just the fact that after Ronon was shot the guy possessing John said (about John) something like “if only you could hear him right now he is screaming so loud” or something to that effect and I’m not really a John whumper but oh boy the thought of John fighting as hard as he could to try and get control back because he wants to help Ronon rlly adds to the experience

After atlantis flies and John is going around checking the damage and he finds Ronon with the shard of glass in his shoulder juts the way he kneels down next to him is so soft and his voice goes soft too its great

I haven’t gotten there yet but ohoho the enzyme episode where Ronon gets drugged and then has to go through withdrawal ohooho I may have watched that scene a few hundred times

I just love also how fiercely loyal Ronon is and how much he trusts them

That ep where those villagers were going to give them to the wraith and Ronon literally would rather die than let his friends be taken to the wraith I love how John and Teyla go through like  45 heart attacks that’s one of the ones I haven’t gotten to yet but ive  seen gifs and oh boy oh boy does it look good

The way I generally describe Ronon is he’s     like a bug fluffy dog. Like he’s kind of silly sometimes and he’s very     loyal and will kill without hesitation if it means keeping his friends     safe

Also just that whole scene when Ronon arrives     when John is asking Elizabeth if he can stay is just like a kid asking his     mom if he can keep a dog he found

And Ronon has such a sweet smile also I love it when hes happy (but also I love it when hes in pain)

Stargate Atlantis was very well directed because for most definitions of “good acting” you can see “oh this character is sad. Now they are happy” which I do understand that many people prefer  this because they have difficulty interpreting facial expressions but I absolutely adore how subtly expressive the actors are because to me it’s fascinating to decode what the character is feeling. They act like real people and talk in the way real people would and it seems super natural and not scripted, and you can just tell in their interactions that the characters care for each other a lot and its beautiful

Now that I’ve said something vaguely scholarly-like its time to move on to the mess of headcanons

Headcanons

So when rewatching season 2 with my sister I realized the amazing potential for angst involving Kell (his old commander who he killed) so in my mind even though he’s very loyal to John at first it was more of a “you saved my life now I’ll watch your back because I owe you” and he had difficulty trusting any of them but especially John this changes over time ofc but he can’t help being wary of command 

I also hc that Kell  would punish the soldiers in his division for being “unfit” for battle so like if they broke a leg or something they would be punished  (this is mostly just for my guilty pleasure of ANGST) so that way they     would “be more aware” of their surroundings and whatnot 

Also disobey direct  orders was a big no no and you know how laid back John usually is with  orders so the first time Teyla disobeyed a direct order after Ronon joined the team John was grumbling about it in a way Teyla knew wasn’t serious but Ronon just kind of panicked and started lying his ass off and saying he threatened her into doing it and he should take the punishment which led to an awkward conversation (awkward for Ronon, it left his teammates ready for some murdering)

He hides injuries  because he was alone for so long and never had anyone to take care of him so he just forgets that he has to mention it and in his mind some injuries might not be that bad 

Beckett is constantly  chasing him around after missions desperately trying to get him to hold  still for long enough to do a check

Ronon hates pain medicine because it tends to dull his senses so in his mind all the more  reason to avoid Beckett

He is really good friends with Beckett but just not when he’s hurt

Usually he wanders into the medbay after bad nightmares if Beckett is on night shift and will just sit there

One time he hesitantly asked if Beckett could check to make sure that the tracker was actually gone for good

Ronon was expecting to get laughed at but Beckett took the request with the upmost seriousness and ran all the tests he could think of to calm Ronon’s fear

One time Ronon stumbled into the medbay and he obviously hadn’t slept in a while and was flinching at every noise so Beckett made up an excuse to “take some blood to test and see if it would be compatible with vaccines for the common sicknesses  humans get” and just like. Sedated him. Ronon felt betrayed at first but quickly realized that Beckett only did it because he cared about him and wasworried. He did try to get more sleep after that tho

Oh and you can bet Beckett goes off at him if he ever ends up in the medbay which he does to everyone but  especially Ronon because usually he’s either dragged there or he’ll come  in like “yeah so three days ago for the last mission I got hit in the side and now I’m coughing up blood so…” and then will just like pass out

While he was a runner he trained himself to be a light sleeper so adjusting to Atlantis was difficult because the ocean would wake him up every night at first

Also thunderstorms are The Worst to him because 1. It gives him PTSD for when he was a soldier and the wraith were attacking and 2. When he was a runner thunderstorms were almost a death sentence because the wraith could track him but he couldn’t hide he couldn’t hear and he couldn’t see so yeah thunderstorms are real bad for him

He has a constant fear of leading the Wraith to his new home and his new family oh also I decided that he doesn’t know if his mother died or not so every place they go he’s hopeful he’ll see her

This is a hc I had before I knew it was basically canon but he and the team hang out in the cafeteria a lot especially after nightmares they just all gravitate there

Also I haven’t gotten here yet so I’m just going off of what I know but he kind of tried to leave after Beckett died because he managed to find a way to blame himself also one of my hcs is that Beckett would tell him  about Scotland all the time and had decided that if they ever got the opportunity to go to Earth then Ronon was coming to Scotland with him sooo     ehehhe the angst of Ronon going to earth for Beckett’s funeral and going     to Scotland with Beckett but not in the way either of them wanted

On to softer hcs just cuz

He loves hugs. 7 years of being alone would  make anyone want a hug.

Children gravitate to him for some reason. Logically it doesn’t make sense because he’s so big and a bit intimidating but children just adore him

He carries extra snacks for Rodney

He can’t swim. Somehow he went his entire life without knowing how to swim which Rodney is astounded by and goes on about it for a minute or so

John took it upon himself to give him swimming lessons. John was a terrible teacher but Ronon managed to get the idea

He loves cocoa, specifically loaded with marshmallows. Teyla jokes he likes the marshmallows more than the cocoa

Wow this has gone on so much longer than I thought it would

So that’s it! you unleashed the beast. I now demand to hear your thoughts on ronon because boy oh boy hes a great whumpee and im not sure ive met many if anyone who likes to whumpe him so im super excited!!

NCIS Fic Rec List

I’ve always enjoyed finding new stories from other people’s rec lists and since I have managed to accumulate my own list, thought I’d make my own! I watched NCIS through to S12-13. Tony was by far my favourite character, so most of my recs center around him in some way. I also have a number of crossover recs - mostly with Stargate. A lot of the recs are from FFN as lots of these stories are from 10-15 years ago. All recs complete unless otherwise indicated.

Case Fic

Author's Summary: 'The murder of a sailor in a DC warehouse reveals a conspiracy that's been silently destroying lives on a Navy carrier for years. Someone high is covering it up. Can Gibbs and company get to the root of it before more lives are lost?'

Review:  Well-written story about a series of cases too much of a coincidence to not be connected. Gibbs goes after it with his usually stubborness, and his own brand of compassion - and his team is there to prop him up. Not the type of fic I usually read, but well-done, and probably the best NCIS Case-fic I've found. ♥

Character Study

Author's Summary: 'Ten hours was an awfully long time to be stuck on a plane with a concerned Gibbs while under the influence of truth serum. Tony/Gibbs non-slash - Hints of TIVA, S7x01-Tag.'

Review: Great fic, set on the plane ride home. Tony's feeling guilty, and Gibbs notices. Very well done and an excellent Tony POV.**

Family of Choice

Especially when Tony seems to lose all common sense afterwards. Very well done - definitely get a harder side of Gibbs than you normally see, and a Tony who you can tell is more than just a bit broken.**

Fanfic Spotlights #5: He Kissed Me First 

 Fandom: Stargate: Atlantis & "A Farm In Iowa" by @sheafrotherdon 

 One of the great things about fanfiction is how people create these really rich and in-depth alternate universes. I found them so engaging and immersive. 

I often found these AUs as fanfic-inducing/inspiring as the canon media text. I designed sets (in my actual class in uni) for an AU where SGA is a galactic story-cycle, imagined alternate-ALTERNATE tales, and in the case of SGA, wondering what would happen if Canon stepped back into this AU. I learned three things from the A Farm In Iowa AU - firstly, the power of the right thing happening at the right moment both in the character's lives, and in the plot. The moment one of the romantic lead's tire blows out, leading to the meet-cute, is so perfectly placed both in the MC's life, and in the text. It's further along in the prose than I had expected, and that made it even more of an "ah-ha!" moment because it was literally as late as it could be and thus shines out of the narrative like a diamond winking in a perfectly constructed brick wall. Secondly, how to structure a romance. Oh MAN, reading this series taught me the joy of the slowburn and how to show the reader that the characters are falling in love before they know it themselves. It's freaking masterful. I took NOTES. And thirdly, how to really PAINT a scene with word choice, sentence length, etc. Sheafrotherdon is an absolute ARCHITECT of text. Every sentence is carefully, and purposefully crafted, like Michelangelo chipping away at marble to reveal the angel it feels like Sheafrotherdon REVEALED their prose instead of writing it. It is a lesson I really took to heart and pushed as far as I could with TheAccidentalTurnSeries. So it's a no brainer that in order to hammer these lessons home, I assigned myself some homework. I decided to try to emulate Sheafrotherdon by writing in her world, in her way. I fanficced a fanfic and did my best to stay true to Shea's style. I think the readership liked it. I don't know how this was received on Shea's part, but I know I always liked it when people dabbled in my AU worlds, so I hope it was welcome.

On Finding Your Voice

I’m done with revisions for the night and am going to head to bed soon. But, first, I wanted to talk about something important to me as a writer.

And that is...finding your voice.

I’m going to start with a little story. When I was little, I just wanted to steal everything from everyone, thinking I could never write as well as they could. It got so bad, that I wasn’t using these pieces of media as inspiration, but was constantly comparing myself to their writers. 

One piece of media that I wished I had made up was this small sci-fi show called Stargate Atlantis.

I specifically wished I had written the relationship between two of the show’s main characters: John Sheppard and Rodney McKay, or McShep, as the fans lovingly called it. 

My writing got so bad, that in my early stories, I stole their relationship. I had the smooth-talking level-headed guy, and the fast-talking scientific guy full of hubris. At first, it was fun! I was using this relationship I loved for my own benefit! But then it grew tiring. And I felt oddly empty.

The relationship just wasn’t working for my particular story. And I didn’t know why. So, after struggling with myself to give up on this particular duo in my story, I went back to the drawing board.

It would take me years later, when I was out of college for a number of years, to find a relationship to write that I was happy with and felt like my own. I didn’t find it until the first draft of the story I’m working on now, and I found it by accident.

I pantsed half of the first draft, unsure what I was doing, but in that draft, a beautiful friendship was born that could be carried on throughout a whole series. And I cannot wait for you guys to see this friendship come to life one day.

So lesson learned: it is better, even if it takes longer, for you to write something from your soul, rather than copying an existing property because you wish you wrote it. This was a hard lesson for me to learn, but I think I’ve learned it for good now. 

That incident - trying to write those characters that didn’t work because it wasn’t ME - helped shape me into the writer I am today, and helped propel me into the friendship I have now written for this draft I am now revising. Funny how life works, right?

So, always have confidence in your ideas and abilities! It isn’t worth it stealing from an existing piece of media.

“Tell me, where she is.” He gnashes through clenched teeth, his heart thundering and legs quaking.

“Ronon, just listen for her. If you found her that day, you’ll find her now.” She assures, voice still calm and cool. He closes his eyes, listening to everything around him and blocking it all out. A few moments pass in silence, no heartbeat, no sign of life. He takes another breath, his fingers tracing his own scar for encouragement. And in that moment, he hears it.

The faintest sound, a little tiny ‘ghud ghud’. A steady beating heart, one that didn’t belong to anyone but her. He sprints in the direction as it gets louder, his heart beginning to soar with happiness. The moment he sees the Daedulus, he swings open the door to find Caldwell sitting in a chair adjacent to her, and she sits, nervously twiddling her thumbs and tapping her toes on the metal floor.

Her eyes meet his and they spring together like opposite ends of magnets. Flinging her arms around his neck, she hooks her legs around his waist as he grips her tightly in a hug. Colonel Caldwell can’t help the small smile that graces his lips as they collide, the air whooshing from their lungs.

“I was so worried.” He whispers in Satedan, nuzzling his nose into the curve where her neck meets her shoulder, pressing his face into the soft skin.

“I know, I’m sorry. That damn Weir wanted me to come here. They said you’d be fine. I knew you would panic. I’m sorry.” She whispers, nuzzling her nose into his cheek. Her breathes ghosts over his ear, sending a chill spiralling through his whole body. Placing her on her feet, he hooks a soft, bronze toned arm around her neck and leads her back to his room.

“Don’t ever do that again.” He growls at Weir as they walk by, Weir’s jaw slack in shock that Ronon had actually found her, dispite being so far away and quiet.

“I’m sorry Ro,” Thalia whispers as they shut his door and sit on the floor on pillows.

“It’s okay. I know she’s wanted to see how it works. I was just really worried.”

“You were scared?” She asks, eyeing him with a playful twinkle in her green eyes.

“I wasn’t scared. Just worried.”

“I’m sorry, Ro. I shouldn’t have agreed. I promise I won’t do it again.” She assures, patting his knee. He reaches over her for his drawer, pulling out a small wooden box, with their five stones in it. They would play this game all the time. She takes her two rocks, and he takes three. Silence overcomes them as they close their eyes, shutting out all sounds except each other’s heartbeats. Pressing her first rock to her chest, the second she holds in her open palm. He does the same, only one stone of his is put on his head. Stones in places, he starts to lift the rock in his palm with his mind and starts to send it to her, and she does the same with her stone to his open palm. The two rocks flow in a steady circle, as if on a track, never touching their hands. He is the first to peek at her, seeing her so concentrated makes him smile, though he never loses focus.

The objective is to keep the stones floating until they can both stand up, raise their hands above their heads and grab their stone. The stones cannot touch the floor, the one on his head cannot fall from its spot. If he wins, she gets the stone placed on her head, if he loses he keeps the stone. He reaches for her hand to encourage her to open her eyes when Sheppard knocks at the door, breaking Ronon’s concentration. With a low groan, the stones hit the floor and Ronon answers the door.

“Hey Ronon, Weir is asking to see you two. Cool trick.” He points to the stones on the floor before disappearing away from the room.

“I guess. We better go see what she needs.” He gives a reluctant sigh. Even after so long, their connection is as strong as ever. This game they played was to keep their connection strong. They played as kids, and Ronon found this to be his favorite game; as they could play it in the woods away from everyone or they could play it in the middle of town to challenge themselves.

The two stand, Ronon’s hands tentatively hovering her as they start down the stairs. Her eyes connect with the leiutenent’s and sends involuntary chills racing down her body. Ronon’s eyes catch what hers are avoiding and makes a mental reminder to question about that. As he realizes that man is the same one from the Daedulus, his eyes narrow on the man. When their eyes meet the lieutenant looks to the floor and starts to walk away. Caldwell watches with a smirk as he sees the connection happen. Lieutenant Tanden breaks into a jog but Ronon throws a small knife, sticking him in the fatty part of his thigh and knocking him to the ground with a cry.

“What did you do?” He asks. His eyes fall on Thalia. “What did he do? Did he hurt you?” He demands, resting a hand on his shoulder.

“No, RoRo, I’m fine.” She looks to the floor, toeing at a little piece of grey paper on the floor. With a grunt, he pulls the knife from Tanden’s leg and with a his of pain, the man skitters away from the hulking dreaded man.

“did you learn your lesson, Tanden?” Caldwell calls out with a chuckle as Tanden limps towards Beckett’s medical lab.

“Ronon, Thalia, we’d like to meet and discuss adding you to the team.” Weir calls, ignoring the little incident that just happened. Caldwell had told Weir, and they’d decided to let Ronon deal with it.

“Thalia, with your permission, we’d like to add you to the team.” Weir says as they all sit around a circular table Ronon to her left and John Sheppard to her right. Teyla and Ronon were giggling about something and she couldn’t help but laugh with him, a little smile on his face and laughter in his eyes. “Anyone that disagrees, state any reasoning you may have.”

“I say no. Our team is already big enough. We already have Teyla and Rodney, one more would be too many to take care of.” Ronon states, avoiding her icy stare.

“I call that invalid. You just don’t want me to go. Find a real reason or shut up.” She barks in Satedan to him. Everyone watches his reaction, eyes wide.

“I don’t see why you even need to go! Any reason to follow me! Any reason to put yourself in danger, even when you could just be here and safe.” He calls back in their native language, everyone watching the intense exchange of words they couldn’t understand.

“Well FINE! Dial Sateda! Send me home!” She shrieks back, still speaking in tongues. He opens his mouth but shuts it, unsure of what to say.

“Why would you wanna go back?” He asks, dropping the Satedan.

“Because if I can’t spend time with you I’d rather go back. I’m your Kalýteros Firos. I’m not Merena.” She gives back, her voice soft, speaking English once more.

“I know. But I-” He stops.

“RoRo, I love you. I’m your friend. I believe in you, I’m just asking you to do the same for me.” She pleads, but she’s a dark storm brewing in his eyes.

“You’re right. You’re not Merena.” He hisses, eyes narrowing on her in disbelief. She shouldn’t have brought up his lost love.

“I’m so sorry, Ro. I just don’t understand why you won’t let me go!” She shrieks, tears filling her eyes. A switch flips for a moment.

“Because you don’t need to. I can’t let you go. If Sateda is the only way, fine. Go back to that wasteland, I don’t care.” He growls. Once the words are out of his mouth he realizes what he’s said. Teyla touches his arm.

“Ronon, you shouldn’t say things like that to her, she’s your best friend. As far as you know she’s the only Satedan alive. Your best friend.” Teyla’s sweet gentle voice reasons, and it flips the switch back off.

“I won’t sit here and let you go on explorations with us. I won’t discuss it.” He growls, standing and stomping out of the room.

“I’d like to go back to Sateda. I was doing fine there before he came and ruined it.” She barks, walking to the Stargate and awaiting them to open the wormhole.

“I know Ronon seems angry now, but it’s because he cares. He wouldn’t want you going to Sateda alone, especially with the Wraith so attuned to that planet.” Teyla croons as she stands in front of the stargate , ready to leave.

“Teyla, take care of Ronon. Okay? Keep him safe, don’t let him do dumb stuff.” She requests, patting Teyla’s arm before the Satedan stargate opens and she steps through. Once the stargate is closed down, they get word there are Wraith hive ships headed to Sateda.

Ronon spends the rest of the night in his room, angry at her for being so strong. She didn’t understand what he’d do to keep her safe. A knock comes late that night, and he gets worried about her. Teyla’s sweet face appears at his door, expression broken.

“What?” He asks. He closes his eyes and listens carefully. He can hear the Daedulus’ engines, two jumpers. He blocks out all the extra noise to find empty. Silent. He starts to wonder what she’d done. Maybe I can’t hear her over the engines. He thinks as he starts towards the Daedulus, ignoring Teyla’s soft footsteps following.

“Ronon?” She asks as he steps into the huge fighter ship and once again closes his eyes to listen for her. Panic starts to set in when he hears the unrully silence on the other end. “Ronon!” She shouts, grabbing his arm and making him look at her.

“No.” He mutters quietly at first, but Teyla nods, a sullen look on her face. “No!” He shouts, racing through the entire Atlantis base in search of her. He stops in a hall on the east wing. Eyes closed, ears begging to hear her. Anything. Hear anything.

“Ronon.” John Sheppard shouts from the stairs above him, never breaking his concetration.

“You let her go, didn’t you?” He asks monotonously, lifting his worried eyes to John. John tries to find a good way to say something. “You let her go!” He shouts, feeling the anger and fear well inside him like an angry monster.

“You told her to go back!” He retorts, but Ronon’s too angry. He told her to go back, he said it.

“I know! Dial Sateda! I have to go.” He worries his lips into his mouth to nibble the skin from anxiously.

“We can’t.” Sheppard gives a look of sadness.

“You can! Dial it now!” He shouts, putting on his weapons belt and standing in front of the gate.

“We can’t. There’s a couple hive ships using a time layover right near there. It’s too risky. She’ll be fine. It doesn’t look like they’re landing on Sateda.” Sheppard informs, giving Ronon’s heart more pain.

“Wraith hive ships. Wraith. Hive. Ships.” He states out loud, his heart beating off rhythm and poorly.

“Yeah, I’m sorry. We can’t dial a gate anywhere near that.”

“You just did! You let her go into that wormhole!” He thunders, reaching the main room.

“I’m sorry Ronon! You can’t go!” Weir shouts, speed walknig to get to him before he broke something on the dial.

“She’s gonna die!” He gives a desperate cry, Teyla rushing to his side for support.

“She’ll survive. She’s survived this long, she’ll continue.” Teyla assures, patting his shoulder. Tears fall down his face and his sea legs carry him to his room, where he falls onto his bed, feeling the anguish rush over him like a crushing wave.

“She’s gonna survive. She has too.” He lets the tears fall down his face for only a moment before listening to the voices muffled outside the door.

“We can tell him, but we can’t take it anywhere. Not yet. If we dial the gate with enough power, we could send a weapons belt and possibly a jumper through. Ronon’s gonna wanna go.”

“He can drive the jumper I guess.” Ronon stands and hooks on his belt and steps out into the hall, ready to go.

“I’m ready.” He barks as he heads to the jumper port with a key ready to leave.

“Ronon, you understand you may not come back?”Weir asks as they make their way to the port.

“And?” He asks, waiting for a real reason.

“Well I just think we should talk about--”

“About nothing. You let her go through that gate. You let her leave, so unless you plan on going in there, let me go. Now.” He growls as he climbs into the jumper. John does a quick check to make sure everything is in order before giving the go ahead, sending Ronon to what could possibly be his doom.

“I’m going with him. I can’t send a soldier in alone.” Sheppard jumps into another jumper and takes off after him.

 Ronon lands the jumper and drives it behind a couple huge trees to block it in the case of the Wraith stopping on this planet. Disengaging the engine, he closes his eyes and hears her heart beating very close by. Trekking over to the lake where they used to play the rock game, he finds her sitting under a tree looking across the lake.

“Hey.” He calls, stamping down the underbrush beneath his feet. Yanking her knife from her side holster, she throws it and sticks it in a tree behind him.

“What are you doing here?” She asks, eyes never meeting his own.

“Just wanted to see you. I was worried.” He shrugs, sitting beside her in the thick, green grass.

“You told me to go. You know I have to listen to you.” She mutters, looking up at him for only a second.

“I know, I shouldn’t have said that. I just never though you’d choose Sateda over being in Atlantis with me. I’m sorry.” He pulls her into a hug and leans his heavy head onto hers.

“I know, Ro. But I can be useful! I can be an asset in most of the explorations if you give me the chance. I wanna help, Ro.” She exclaims as she leans against him.

“Guys! I hate to break up this happy reunion! But Wraith are incoming and we need to jump the hell out of here!” Ronon first jumps before realizing its Sheppard calling to them. He grabs her hand and pulls her to his jumper.

“Tell me I can go on the trips.” She orders, digging in her heels to stop herself from being pulled.

“What?” He asks, grabbing both her arms and attempting to lift her.

“I said, tell me I can go on the trips.” She snarls, putting all her weight against him to keep her position.

“Can’t we talk about this when the Wraith aren’t trying to kill us?” He shouts over the whirring of the incoming ships and the loud air tunnel the landing blades made as it got closer.

“No! Tell me I can go!” She shouts, leaning away from him. Sheppard grabs her shoulders and shakes her.

“I’ll tell you you’re a god if you get in that jumper! You can go on the trips! Now get in that damn jumper before we become the next meal!” Sheppard shouts, pointing angrily to Ronon’s jumper.

Possible Meeting - AnnaDruvez: Ba'al tells SG-1 what he really thinks of their chances in their 'war' with the Goa'uld. A not rape-y Ba’al/Carter.

Old Soldiers Die Hard - Sholio: The old guy in Room 30B was about the most disagreeable human being that the nurses had ever met. But he did get visitors including a retired Air Force Colonel. If you only read one on this list read this one. 

Just So Long and Long Enough - busaikko: Dave Sheppard learns more about his brother and gets drawn into a tangle of secrets and truths. McShep. Post- Canon. Short and sweet story.

Once by Chance Shaded - Mazoku (Ashkaztra): A mission goes wrong, and John finds himself once again having to work with Todd, on a planet where the locals and the weather both are trying to kill them. Working together is their only way out, and in the process, they find an understanding. Another quality quick read. Pre-Slash if you wanna read it that way.

Not Alone - karasel: John Sheppard goes to his Dad's funeral and is accompanied by Teyla who is very pregnant with his child. AU of the episode 'Outcast'. John/Teyla established. Apparently, I haven't read this in a while because I don't remember the ending.

The Seventh Seed - Jansma: Guide takes Jennifer onto his hive, willing to develop with her the serum that might allow peace to come to the Pegasus galaxy. He had no idea how much trouble one small human female would be, or the effect it could have on him. Post Legacy Series. Wraith POV. I much enjoy this one.

Beneath the Mourning Door - RedSkittleQueen: A young woman is unprepared for the impact of saving a dying Wraith. Really interesting Human/Wraith dynamic. Not Atlantis-centric so none of your favs are in it. I really must go back and read this again it’s really cool. 

Whirling Blades - Stargatewraithfan.wordpress.com: When a Wraith Commander goes to take martial arts lessons from the sole surviving student of one of his own personal heroes, he must make a value judgment and choose accordingly. Very wraith positive. Human/Wraith. You see a theme here? 

 Boundless - Stargatewraithfan.wordpress.com: Sequal to Whirling Blades. A Wraith Commander is forced to make a decision about someone from his past not appearing as he thought they would.

One New Beginning (And Five False Starts) - tigerlady (shetiger): As a leader, Ladon knows that he has to make tough decisions, and live with what he's done. But maybe, just maybe, he doesn't have to sacrifice as many lives as he'd originally planned. Evan Lorne/Ladon Radim Pre-Slash.
