"Only a Sith deals in absolutes"
Sure, we make fun of Obi-Wan for that line being paradoxical, but I find it really interesting that it's the villainous characters in the show that believe in black and white thinking while it's the heroic characters that admit nuance.
Qimir sees the Jedi as evil and therefore any violence against them as justified. Mother Koril refuses to see any nuance in the situation and encourages Mae to do the same. Sol is a wise and kind man whose one shred of darkness is his inability to admit that he made a mistake. And Osha's key flaw, the thing that dooms her, is her binary thinking.
Even as a Jedi, she couldn't get over her hatred of her sister, couldn't see that you couldn't fully blame an eight year old for an impulsive action no matter how dire the consequences were. When she meets her sister again and Mae pleads with her, she dismisses her as just a criminal. When her worldview is challenged and she learns her sister is innocent and Sol killed her mother, she doesn't take this as a lesson on assumptions, just switches her hatred to him. Sol was a kind and loving mentor, but he killed her mother and lied to her, so he's just bad. Mae tried to imprison her and attacked her, but she wasn't really to blame for their mom's death and loves her, so she's good. Qimir killed her friends but then exposed the truth so he's good enough for her. The Jedi are good for saving her and bad for covering it up. And she ultimately decides to stay a Sith because she's corrupted now, she's bad, so why bother doing anything else?
I just find it fascinating that in and out of universe people thought this was going to be a "the Jedi were bad actually" show because it shows Jedi being fallible and making mistakes, sometimes fatal ones, but the show itself explicitly portrays such simplistic thinking as a path to evil. No person is pure, everybody fails their morals. Sol did a terrible thing, but he did a lot of good as well, and neither of those cancels out the other. The important thing is to have empathy, to give people the benefit of the doubt, to let them fail and make up for it. Otherwise, when you yourself fail (and you will, because all people do), what will you do?

I finished The Acolyte and i noticed some things that really got me and made me go crazy over that I’ll share with you all cause why not
(Warning spoilers)
Ok first of all watching the finale for the second time made me realize even more things than I did the first time like how in the beginning osha said she had a vision of Mae holding a lightsaber but not using it with her hand outstretched killing Sol and originally I thought she meant when Mae is holding the saber and then throws it aside (and maybe I’m stupid for not realizing the first time)but then I realized that the vision is actually her killing Sol herself but she thought it was Mae and I thought that was really amazing
Also how she went to the planet to save sol but that was the very thing that led to his death ( which is also like almost an exact parallel of Anakin which is beautiful)
I thought it was really interesting how at the beginning both sisters are angry and struggling with what happened on Brendok and Mae chooses to hunt down and kill the Jedi as revenge and in anger and osha tries to bring Mae to justice but at the end when the whole truth comes out Mae refuses to kill Sol and wants him to be brought to justice and Osha is the one who kills him in cold blood out of anger which really shows how the sisters have switched places over the course of the show
(Which is mirrored by the way at the end it is Mae wearing Osha’s white clothes showing her turn to the light and justice while Osha wears Mae’s black clothes and gives into her anger)
Also I love how perfectly they set up her killing Sol like they specifically have her say that she failed at being a Jedi because she couldn’t control her negative emotions and couldn’t cope with what she’d lost and she was attacking Mae with clearly a lot of emotion and then when she finds out it was Sol and that he lied to her all this time she once again couldn’t control those emotions and ended up killing him even though he was her master and she went to the planet to save him
(Also adding on that they way she choked him as she was saying how much he loved her and the way he told her it was ok basically forgiving her as she was killing him I mean he obviously made a lot of mistakes but no one can deny how much he loved her which just makes his death so much sadder cause really everything he did was for her even if he was also somewhat selfish at times)
Another thing is just how on Brendok the Jedi blamed Mae both for Osha’s sake and to hide their own actions but it all came out later and really hurt them all but now Vernestra is doing the exact same thing which is probably going to send everything into a huge downward spiral
Alright a couple things to finish up
what is Plagueis doing there??? Honestly I don’t even want to know but that’s slightly scary for season two
Also can we all agree that Vernestra’s purple light whip is cool as hell? Cause I feel like it doesn’t get enough recognition
Alright last of all rip to my favorites Sol Jecki and Yord the three of them deserved better and I wish we got to see more of them (especially jecki and yord in that manner)
Alright sorry this post got really long and it’s honestly just my ramblings that no one needs to hear but you’re getting them anyway
Enjoy

Bisexual media
Note: This should not be taken as a declaration of quality or my personal likings - I haven’t consumed all the media below. Not all of the shows focus on a bi protagonist but all do have at least one bi main character; a summary of main initial plot is provided. I will edit this post with updates intermittently.
TV Series
The Bisexual (2018) - Leila explores her attraction to men after identifying as a lesbian alongside her girlfriend and friends for the past decade, while her new roommate tries to get a grip on his relationship with a younger woman.
Black Mirror’s San Junipero - Yorkie meets Kelly in the strange setting of San Junipero. What’s the deal with this place, and what can make them stay?
Bob and Rose - Bob is gay. Rose has a boyfriend. Can I make it any more obvious? (I can - they find that they’re attracted to each other and deal with the implications and expectations of that.)
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend - Rebecca pursues her ex-boyfriend in the hopes of finding happiness. With a drastic move to West Covina, will she learn what happy feels like?
Cucumber - Henry’s life is upturned in one evening, then another, and then some more, while boyfriend Lance and new acquaintance Freddie come to terms with the present and the past.
Everything Now - Newly out of recovery from anorexia, Y11 student Mia is determined to complete her bucket list and be seen as normal.
Feel Good - Mae and Charlotte navigate a relationship challenged by Mae's drug addiction and Charlotte's new sexual discovery.
High Fidelity - Young record store owner Rob revisits her past relationships in order to sort out her singledom.
Kieta Hatsukoi - Aoki lies about having feelings for classmate Ida to protect the feelings of his crush Hashimoto. But misunderstandings and revelations cause a hullabaloo.
Torchwood - this Doctor Who spin-off features a collection of characters solving alien crimes.
Movies
Appropriate Behaviour - Brooklyn dweller Shirin deals with her ex-girlfriend, family expectations, job struggles and more.
The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant - in one of the few films with an all-female cast, the titular fashion designer navigates her relationships with her family, her live-in servant, and her cousin's attractive acquaintance.
City of Lost Souls - a German musical exploring the experiences of LGBT people, black people, Jewish people and immigrants in post-WW2 Berlin.
Disobedience - Ronit returns to her old Orthodox Jewish community after her father passes away, having been shunned for not adhering to cultural expectations.
Je, Tu, Il, Elle - A woman struggles in dealing with her break-up.
Shiva Baby - While at a Jewish funeral service with her family and community, college student Danielle navigates an awkward situation with her sugar daddy and her ex-girlfriend.
Books
@the-bi-library has an extensive collection of books, with specific collections based on genre, romantic endgame, intersecting identities (ie. protagonists of colour or disabled protagonists), etc.
The Literary Bisexual offers a smaller but thoroughly-reviewed collection of books from around the world.
I also recommend winners/noted entries for the Lambda Literary Award's Bisexual categories - there are other categories not specific to identity for which bisexual books can be nominated.
Fiction
You Could Be So Pretty (Holly Bourne) - In a world not too unlike our own, where girls and women can be Pretties or Objectionables, what will schoolgirls Belle and Joni make of their lives under the Doctrine after an incident brings them together?
Your Driver Is Waiting (Priya Guns) - Damani, a RideShare driver, falls hard for a white upper-class girl, but she's been grieving her father, caring for her mother and dealing with the ever-growing tension from protesters across the city. When Jolene acts with massive consequences, what will Damani be pushed to do for herself and her community?
Natural Beauty (Ling Ling Huang) - Our protagonist, a former piano prodigy, has had to abandon her potential in order to provide for her parents following a car crash. A job at a famous salon seems to fall into her lap as the solution, but there's always a price to pay for beauty.
Non-fiction
In The Dream House (Carmen Maria Machado) - Machado goes through her volatile relationship with The Woman From The Dreamhouse, intercut with musings on pop culture and history.
Strong Female Character (Fern Brady) - famous in British comedy circles, this autobiography follows Brady's life growing up in Scotland as an autistic woman.
You're Embarrassing Yourself (Desiree Akhavan) - from the Creator of The Bisexual and Appropriate Behaviour, this autobiography covers Akhavan's life as a bisexual Iranian in America.

Interesting new music to listen to (my recommendations):
“The Player”, Clara Mae: a raw and empowering song, with poetic interludes and aesthetics that flawlessly complement the lyrics.
“My Mother Told Me”, Ekaterina Shelehova: inspired by Russian folk music. The artist deeply touched my heart with her unique, angelic voice.
“Ojos Diamante”, Ximena Sariñana: about encountering hardship in love and wishing to be reassured by looking in one’s partner’s eyes
“Frailty of Nights”, Amr Shalaby: need piano music to loop endlessly? This one, you’ll listen to it on repeat, especially if you’re seeking something calm and majestically beautiful
“Nobody’s soldier”, Hozier: an anti-war song about the violence we’re witnessing from afar while feeling angry and hopeless. The white flag and the child doll in the music video gave me chills.
“luminary rainbows”, ionnalee: to whom it may concern
“Ghost in the Machine”, Raycheal Winters: a lyrical and musical masterpiece, about finding the inner strength to overcome trials and reach self-realization
“My Body’s My Buddy”: about loving and accepting one’s body throughout its changes, for the care, safety and experiences it offers
“Vampires”, Ha Vay: about our obsession with eternal youth, packed with references to fairytales and the fantasy genre
“Grandiose”, Pomme & Ichiko Aoba: the Japanese version of the third track of “les failles”, about wanting to be a mother while questioning if it’s a genuine desire or if it’s largely due to social influences
“Parasite”, Chløë Black: dark feminine energy, hell yeah! And with a pun between “parasites”, “Paris lights” and “Paradise”. Need I say more?
“That’s My Floor”, Magdalena Bay: another banger by this group of two, known for their hypnotic sound, references to Internet culture, surrealist visuals, existential undertones and experimental approach to music
“Dancing With Fire”, Sever the Light: like the title, the song is fire!
“Coloured Concrete”, Nemahsis: crafted with originality and intricate metaphors, this song perfectly captures the feeling of confusion while growing up. It’s the one that I related to the most.
Other songs that I wish I mentioned: Dark Night of the Soul (Simone Simons, ft. Ayreon), Pink Electric Shoes (Parov Stelar), Heartbreak Rodeo (Lily Meola), That’s Life (Luna Li), Eternals (Abstracted Minds), Offerings to the Gods (Othala), Plead (Ashley Kutcher), rush (Marco Luka), Can’t Stop Me Now (KAZIMI), Hung the Moon (Cults), Ethereal (TXMY x Freya Ridings), Thank Goodness (Hope Tala), beautiful girls get the ugliest world (carolesdaughter), Left of Me (Andrea Bejar), Come Alive (Phantogram), Say My Name (Cassyette), Skin & Bones (Silverstein), Drift Slow (Glasser), gonna have to trust you (Stephen Stanley), feelings don’t lie (Ofenbach & salem ilese), Shell of You (Lava La Rue), Another High (Mothica)

Director: John Ford
Cast: John Wayne, Pedro Armendariz, Harry Carey, Jr., Ward Bond, Mae Marsh, Jane Darwell, Ben Johnson
In the John Wayne/John Ford team-up 3 Godfathers based on Peter B. Kyne's 1913 novel, which had already been screen adapted several time before, including one by Ford himself. Here we have three desperados Bob Hightower (John Wayne, The Shootist), Pete (Pedro Armendáriz, Fort Apache) and The Abilene Kid (Harry Carey Jr., Rio Grande) ride into Welcome, Arizona to rob the bank. They make their escape on horseback but Pete is shot and wounded in the process, and Sheriff Buck Sweet (Ward Bond, Rio Bravo) manages to shoot a hole in their water bag leaving them without water to quench their thirst. Now wandering the desert looking for water and the keen sheriff always one step ahead of them, keeping them from nearby water supplies. They become lost during a sandstorm and losing their horses the trio end-up at a dried-up watering hole where they  they come upon a covered wagon, inside is the Sheriff's niece in labor with a child. They aid her in giving birth, but she dies from complications of birthing, but not before she name the baby  "Robert William Pedro Hightower" after the names of the men, making them promise to save her baby, and naming the godfathers of the child, which they out to do, but when the Sheriff discovers his daughter's death he blames in on the three desperados. This is a wonderful Technicolor  shot western with a terrific cast, the Death Valley backdrop is stunning, especially during the windstorm scenes that look fantastic in restored HD. The restoration looks fantastic, extras include a beautifully restored version of MGM's earlier black and white version Three Godfathers (1936), directed by Richard Boleslavski and starring Chester Morris and Lewis Stone, plus Trailers for both film. I love having the earlier version on here as well, it makes for an interesting contrast and compare as the earlier version is much grimmer, with the Bob character played by Morris being a cutthroat killer, and heavier on the religious analogy, and it's also beautifully shot, making this a fantastic double-feature.
Special Features:

Director: George Roy Hill
Cast: Diane Keaton, Yorgo Voyagis, Klaus Kinski, Sami Frey
In this overstuffed thriller Diane Keaton (Annie Hall) stars as Charlie, an American stage actress working in Europe is recruited by Israeli Intelligence agency Mossad to go undercover to track down a Palestinian terrorist Khalil (Sami Frey, Black Widow) who is targeting high-profile Jews. Directed by George Roy Hill (Funny Farm) and adapted from the 1983 novel of the same name by John le Carré this cloak and dagger thriller also features Klaus Kinski (Aguirre, the Wrath of God) as Israeli spymaster Martin Kurtz, Yorgo Voyagis as spy Joseph who seduces and recruits Charlie, pulling her into a web of lies that ends up with her acting a double-agent being taken to Beirut to train at a terrorist camp before being send on assignment by Khalil to assassinate a Jewish professor. The film takes us to London, Munich, Athens, Jerusalem and Beirut , there's a menagerie of characters that float in and out that make it a bit difficult to stay focused on the main plot. Also not helping is that the film is so overstuffed that character motivations are merely sketches, I never did quite figure out how a pro-Palestinian anti-Zionist left-wing actress was successfully recruited by Israeli intelligence to their cause, let alone to seduce and kill for them. Needless to say, in these current times this is an interesting premise that might get some attention now that its making it;s HD debut, but I doubt it will generate much conversation in that it feels so muddled and muted. This is one that I had never seen nor heard of until it was announced, coming from the director of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, Funny Farm and The World According to Garp, I was curious about it, but did not end up loving it, even Kinski seems subdued unmotivated this time around, and you could usually count on madman Kinski to deliver the goods, but like everyone else he seems to be struggling with the material. The Blu-ray from Warner Archive is handsomely restored and filmic with uncompressed audio, the only extras is a Trailer.
Special Features:
- Original Theatrical Trailer (1:49)
THEY DRIVE BY NIGHT (1940)
Labe: Warner Archive
Region Code: Region Free
Rating: Unrated
Duration: 95 Minutes
Audio: English DTS-HD MA 2.0 Dual-Mono with Optional English Subtitles
Video: 1080p HD (1.33:1)
Director: Raoul Walsh
Cast: George Raft, Ann Sheridan, Ida Lupino, Humphrey Bogart, Gale Page, Alan Hale, Roscoe Carns
Amidst the Great Depression independent truckers Joe and Paul Fabrini are barely making ends meet, and at the start of the film are three payments behind on their rig. Paul (Humphrey Bogart, The Maltese Falcon) dreams of spending more time with his wife, and holding down a corporate gig with steady hours and pay, while and Joe (George Raft, Scarface) has his eye on becoming a trucking bigwig someday. At a diner Joe encounters red-haired Cassie Hartley (Ann Sheridan, Angels with Dirty Faces), who is easy on the eyes and quick-witted, they start a relationship and shortly after Paul loses an arm in an accident after he falls asleep at the wheel. Joe ends up accepting a managerial job working for a trucking outfit run by Ed Carlson (Alan Hale Sr.) but finds himself ducking come-on by the guy's wife Lana Carlson (Ida Lupino, The Big Knife), who is straight-up troub le from her first second on screen.  Tired of her drunken husband she murders him and offers Joe a 50% stake in the company, with strings attached, 'natch. However, when Joe announces he's getting married she confesses to the crime, but she's gonna take Joe with her! Joe of her husband's murder in this hard-edged, classic drama directed by Raoul Walsh (High Sierra) starts off as an engrossing wildcat trucker melodrama and evolves into a damn fine noir-tinged thriller with Ida Lupino stealing the show as the increasingly unhinged Mrs. Carlson. Bogart is also terrific, but he plates third fiddle after Lupino's femme fatale and stand-up guy Raft, maybe even fourth after the wisecracking Sheridan who is fantastic as well, but he has presence to spare, and it's not surprise that he went onto Hollywood icon status not long after. The Blu-ray from Warner Archive looks impressive in HD, not a blemish to squint at anywhere, solid grayscale and largely filmlike. Extras include a Lux Radio Theater Broadcast starring George Raft and Lana Turner; a 11-min featurette with historians Leonard Maltin, Eric Lax, and Robert Osborne waxing nostalgic; a vintage 19-min musical-comedy short, plus the trailer.
Special Features:
- Lux Radio Theater Broadcast with George Raft and Lana Turner (6/2/41) (44:22)
- Featurette: Divided Highway - The Story of They Drive By Night (10:35)
- Vintage WB Short SWINGTIME IN THE MOVIES (1938) (19:09)

STAND AND DELIVER (1984)
Label: Warner Archive
Region Code: Region-Free
Rating: PG
Duration: 103 Minutes 33 Seconds
Audio: English DTS-HD MA 2.0 with Optional English Subtitles
Video: 1080p HD Widescreen (1.85:1)
Director: Ramon Menendez
Cast: Edward James Olmos, Lou Diamond Phillips, Rosana De Soto, Andy Garcia, Ingrid Oliu, Vanessa Marquez,  Estelle Harris
The based-on-a-true-story drama Stand and Deliver (1988) is directed by Ramón Menéndez (Money For Nothing), and stars Edward James Olmos (Blade Runner) as Jaime 'Kemo' Escalante, a quirky teacher at a East Los Angeles inner-city high school where the students routinely under perform academically. When he learns that the school accreditation is on the line he sets the goal of having his kids not only learn calculus but to have them ace the Advanced Placement Calculus by their senior year. The unruly kids are initially reluctant and difficult to reign in, but he wins them over through his oddball and unconventional ways of teaching. This is one of those feel good inspirational movies that while largely embellished and dramatized for cinematic effect is was quite an enjoyable watch when I saw it on cable numerous times as a teen, if a bit trite when pitted against reality these days. That's not to say their are not teachers out there who go above and beyond for their kids, there absolutely are and I was lucky to had a few myself, but this is just a bit too saccharine and overly dramatized to ever hot on an emotional level for me, especially now as a jaded adult, this feels like a Hollywood fairytale more than anything resembling reality. The film also stars Lou Diamond Phillips (Supernova) as a gang member who initially gives Kemo hassles, other actors playing students include Ingrid Oliu (Hellhole), and the late Vanessa Marquez (Maniac Cop III: Badge of Silence), plus keep an eye out for Estelle Harris (George's mom from Seinfeld!) as a the principal's secretary and Andy Garcia (Geostorm) who plays an agent from  the Educational Testing Service who show up to investigate how a group of poor inner-city kids could do so well, suspecting cheating has transpired.  That said, this was/is a popular movie, hard to believe it's only now debuting on Blu-ray thanks to the Warner Archive, who do a terrific job restoring it for it's Blu-ray debut.

THE BOOB (1926) & WHY BE GOOD? (1929) SILENT CLASSICS DOUBLE-FEATURE
Label: Warner Archive
Region Code: Region-Free
Rating: Unrated
Duration: 60 Minutes 15 Seconds (The Boob) / 81 Minutes 22 Seconds (Why Be Good?)
Audio: DTS-HD MA 2.0 Dual-Mono
Video: B&W 1080p HD Fullscreen (1.33:1)
Director: William A. Wellman & William A. Seiter
Cast: Gertrude Olmstead, George K. Arthur, Joan Crawford, Charles Murray, Colleen Moore
In The Boob (1926) simple country boy Peter Good (George K. Arthur), the titular boob. is crestfallen when his former gal Amy (Gertrude Olmsted) becomes infatuated by city dandy Harry Benson (Antonio D’Algy). His friend Cactus Jim comes up with a plan to win her back by dressing up Peter in a poor-fitting cowboy outfit and arming him with a six-shooter, so he can round-up some alleged bootleggers, ti impress her. Also around are Peter's pal  Ham Bunn and his faithful dog Benzine, the latter of whom actually provides most the this flick's entertainment. The plot involves Peter storming a local club The Booklovers, an alleged book-themed speakeasy. It turns out that Benson is a bootlegger, and we also get an early appearance from Joan Crawford (Strait-Jacket) as an undercover prohibition agent. The silent-era sight gags and comedy are a tad uninspired, but the slapstick shenanigans are not without charm.  An early film from director William A. Wellman (Westward the Women) didn;t exactly set my eyeballs on fire but still an interesting comedy surio of the silent era.
The second half of this silent era double-feature is WHy be Good? (1929) wherein wide-eyed star Colleen Moore (The Scarlett Letter) plays vivacious jazz-era flapper Pert Kelly, who is a good girl who works at a department store, but loves to dance in the trendy flapper fashions, have a good time, and enter dance competitions, much to the chagrin of her father who feel the lifestyle is immoral. After a night on the town she meets Winthrop Peabody Jr (Neil Hamilton, Commissioner Gordon from the 60's Batman TV show!) and hit it off bigtime, but it turns out he's the son of her employer which creates complications at the workplace when it is revealed  that he is the new personnel manager at the store, but that his father had forbade him to date the staff. This one has more substance that The Boob, a good mix of melodrama and comedy, some fantastic dancing sequences, but it's Olmstead who singularly steals the show here, such a cutey, as her virtue is put to the test by Winthrop. Both flicks looks stellar with handsome restorations that are quite stunning for these nearly century old films, the latter shows some scratches and both of brief moments of wonky contrast but otherwise these look marvelous. The Boob is a silent film, but we do get a fun piano score by Arthur Barrow that was added to the film in 2003, and Why Be Good? which is a sound-comedy features the original Vitaphone soundtrack with musical score,  sound effects and synchronized singing, though no other audible dialogue. The Vitaphone soundtrack is nicely restored but does have a light layer of hiss, but never rising to the level of distraction.  No extras for this silent-era double-feature but seeing these nearly 100 year-old comedies get loving restorations is treat enough for me.

MONEY TALKS (1997)
Label: Warner Archive
Region Code: Region-Free
Rating: R
Duration: 96 Minutes
Audio: English DTS-HD MA 2.0 Dual-Mono with Optional English Subtitles
Video: 1080p HD Widescreen (2.39:1)
Director: Brett Ratner
Cast: Chris Tucker, Charlie Sheen, Heather Locklear, Gerard Ismael, Paul Sorvino
I am used to Warner Archive unearthing flicks from the 30's through the 6o's that are new to me, but it's pretty rare that I see them bring a 90's flick to Blu-ray that I have never heard of previously, as is the case with this Bret Ratner (Rush Hour) directed action-comedy starring Chris Tucker (The Fifth Element) as Franklin Hatchett, a fast-talking small time car wash hustler in L.A. who gets busted after the meddling of tabloid TV reporter James Russell (Charlie Sheen, The Boys Next Door). On a prison bound bus Franklin is seated next to French criminal Raymond Villard (Gerard Ismael, The Last Romantic Lover) when his crew attack the transport, in the bloody aftermath Franklin is wrongfully accused of killing cops, he manages to escape with his life but seeks out the help of news reporter Russell, and both end up wrongfully accused and on the run from the law and Villard and his henchmen. If you're a fan of Rush Hour this certainly falls into that sweet spot of urban action-comedy, we have a straight man, the annoying antics of Tucker, and plenty of L.A. scenery. There's also a stellar cast here, we have both Paul Gleason (Sixteen Candles) and Daniel Roebuck (Dudes) as detectives, Heather Locklear (The Return of Swamp Thing)  as James fiancé, Elise Neal (Mission To Mars) as Paula Franklin's pregger girlfriends, plus Paul Sorvino (The Stuff) and Veronica Cartwright (Invasion of the Body Snatchers) as James's soon to be in-laws. Super breezy, action-packed and slickly made, this was a fun 90's action-comedy that delivered everything I expected, car chases, shoot outs, explosions galore, and snappy banter between the leads. The new scan looks terrific with excellent depth and clarity, color reproduction pleases with lots of punchy highlights, and the uncompressed audio is solid. The only extras is a Trailer, which is a bummer, but otherwise a top-notch A/V presentation for an underserved flick.

Prompt: Flying to Los Angeles
Rating: Gen
Word Count: 3395
You can also read this on AO3
Mae doesn’t know why people would come to a Flight Museum to see photographs, but it’s the fourth day the man has been here. On the first day Mae passed him in the gallery but did not pay attention, but on the second day he was still there, in the same spot. On the third day, Mae did not go to the exhibition but she knew he was there because Tou-san told her and Kaa-san about him at dinner. He saw the visitor in the security camera footage.
“Doesn’t look like a thief,” Tou-san said. “But we should keep an eye on him.”
On the fourth day, Mae wanders back into the Flight and Light photo exhibition. It is Thursday. The galley is long and blue, the photos unblinking and tense, the man stands still. He wears a blue suit jacket. She’s not supposed to talk to strangers, but nothing can happen in a museum.
“What are you doing?”
The visitor’s shoulders bounce and freeze: Mae has startled him. The museum is quiet. He glances down and smiles. “I’m waiting for someone,” he explains.
Mae blinks. “But you were here yesterday too.”
If he asks her how does she know, Mae would proudly announce that both Kaa-san and Tou-san work here, and maybe warn him against theft. But the visitor’s smile sparkles. “Oh, you’re a kid of the staff here.”
“How did you know?”
“I’m a detective,” the visitor says.
Mae looks at the visitor. Detectives in TV shows look older than him; they often wear black, shiny leather jackets or suits, and they shout at people or get hurt a lot. Kaa-san doesn’t let her watch most of the shows. Mae spots no scars on his face. He speaks calmly too.
“Okay,” Mae says. “Are you here to catch a bad guy?”
“No, I’m just here to wait for someone,” the detective turns his gaze back to the photo. “I promise you I’m not here to steal anything.”
His tone drops from lukewarm to neutral, cold even; Mae falters, but she really wants to know. Plus Tou-san said to keep an eye on him. “Okay, but how come they never show up? Are you lying?”
“I don’t tell lies,” the visitor says.
Tou-san checks the camera footage again. Every day, the visitor comes after noon. He visits other exhibitions too, but he spends forty, fifty minutes, even more than an hour in front of that photo. Other people take pictures or look at their phones, but the visitor does not. His hands are rooted deeply in the pockets of his trousers as if guarding precious presents.
In the end Tou-san says, maybe the visitor just really likes the photo.
“Do you really like that photo?”
“You have a lot of questions,” the visitor raises one eyebrow.
It is nearly four o’clock; the museum closes at five on weekdays. Still the visitor is the only one in the gallery. Most of the visitors are out there on the big lawn outdoors, or in the hangers, where jets, balloons, airships and helicopters rest. There are more people dozing in the documentary cinema than in here.
Mae’s Sensei also says she has a lot of questions, but she says they are not the right questions. Mae doesn’t even know why there are right questions and wrong questions. She crosses her arms and stops asking, but keeps her eyes unblinking. The visitor is tall.
“It’s a nice photo,” the visitor says.
Mae turns her gaze too. The photo is called “Another Mystery”. It is black and white. She can tell that it was taken inside a plane, because of the seats and the small round windows and the indistinct shapes of another parked plane outside of one of the small round windows. Instead of glancing out of the window with joy, the girl in the photo gazes toward where the camera does not reach.
Mae follows her eyes. She sees empty seats and a haze of silhouettes.
The girl is pretty, but Mae feels uncomfortable. Her disquietness reflects unseen calamity, when Mae looks at her, cold tentacles creep out of congealed time and brush past the back of her neck. Mae’s Tou-san explained when they were picking photos for the exhibition: the plane, was in fact, a crime scene. One of the most famous cases in recent years.
“It was taken in Los Angeles,” the visitor carries on.
Mae knows that; the date and the location information are written under the photo, next to the name of the photographer, Amano Tsugumi. “I know that,” she twists the straps of her school bag. “Who is this Oneesan? Why was she photoed? Was she with the criminal?”
The visitor pauses. His gaze falls back into another time, another space. A hundred questions rise in Mae’s chest. Then:
“She was with the detective that solved the case,” he replies. “It was his first case.”
Mae thinks of a plane more like an albatross. They both have wings too long and slender for their bodies; for them soaring is easier than landing. She whooshes her plastic seaplane across the shower stall. “Yokoto Tower, Cessna 20633, ready for take off,” she blows air out of her cheeks, “to Los Angeles!”
She pushes the door of the bathroom open just as the fifteen minutes’ drizzle of sand in the hourglass ends. She can see the TV from here, and a familiar face on the screen makes her run into the living room. “That’s him, Kaa-san! The visitor in the gallery! I talked to him today!”
Kaa-san glances up from her goldfish. “Oh, I was just thinking that he looks familiar! So I have seen him! Well, on TV. Why was he here, then?”
The corner of the detective’s lips raises as he talks about fishing lines. Mae joins her Kaa-san to feed the goldfish; the bowl smells like a summer lake. “He said he was waiting for someone.”
“Is he on a case?” As suddenly as the guppy darts away in ripples, Kaa-san’s light tone sharpens. “Is the museum in danger? Should we check with the police?”
“Don’t scare her,” Tou-san replies mildly; he must’ve heard their conversation. He comes in and rewraps Mae’s dripping hair into her towel. “We’re keeping an eye on everything. We would know if there’s anything.”
“He used to be a high school detective, I remember,” Kaa-san says. “I always think he looks a little sad. Being in this kind of gruesome business since he was so young...”
“Don’t hang around him too much, though,” Tou-san puts his hand on Mae’s back and ushers her toward her room. “I did hear that the young man is some sort of Shiragami.”
Mae sneaks a last glimpse at the TV screen: how is the detective sad? He stands straight; he talks fast and confident. His eyes are bright and unflinching, catching every camera flash. She thinks of the detective in the visitor’s story when she lies in her bed; twin origami swifts drift round and round and round down the ceiling on invisible strings. Out her window clouds are gathering into a foamy whale.
The other detective, the detective in the story, was sixteen years old. It wasn’t a long story; the visitor said the case was closed in forty minutes. The plane flew on for three more hours with a corpse, a woman who killed with a wire in her clothing, and the friends they left behind. Mae wonders if she would be able to do anything when she is sixteen.
The museum closes on Mondays. On Tuesday, she finds the detective in front of a Kawasaki Ki-61 instead. He’s waving goodbye to someone; a dark-skinned man with a baseball cap throws a hand into the air carelessly in return. He smiles when he sees Mae; she just notices that it doesn’t reach his eyes. “Konichiwa, Mae-chan,” he greets.
“I didn’t see you in the gallery!”
“I was just showing my friend around,” the detective turns and Mae follows him. Overhead, a projector coughs out a video on repeat, flashing black, white, black, white. In dim light the planes gleam an eggshell, ghostly white, like roosting birds. “But he has the worst of luck. Had to run off for something urgent, unfortunately.”
“I saw you on TV,” Mae says. Questions bubble inside her, growing and growing, shoving each other. She’s afraid that they will burst or rush out altogether or disappear. “So you really is a detective!”
“I don’t lie,” the detective says. It’s the second time he says this.
“I want to ask about your story,” Mae starts. “The detective-san, he really said ‘this giant mass of steel floating over the Pacific Ocean’?”
“I’m convinced that he did.”
“That’s both cool and silly. Who talks like that?”
The detective shrugs. “It’s not important,” he says. They pass a set of photos capturing plane tails and the sea in a grid. “Okay, what’s next.”
Mae wants to ask him about the person he’s been waiting for, about his cases and whether he is on a case. About the young detective in his story and the Oneesan in the photo because there seem to be so many things she is looking at instead of plane passengers, so many things in her eyes. But the next question, a bubble she does not know, pushes itself out of her tongue out of the blue.
“Tou-san said I shouldn’t hang out with you,” Mae says. “What is a Shiragami?”
The detective pauses. On his face something flares; Mae thinks of how a river of clouds rushes past the sky in documentaries. The sky darkens and the world sinks into either ancient stillness or rain. Has she asked the wrong question?
“A Shiragami,” he speaks at last, clearly and calmly just as he is in front of cameras. There isn’t rain. “is a Kami-sama who manages death, or a person who brings misfortune all the time, including death. Maybe your Tou-san is right.”
“I don’t believe it,” Mae says. Tou-san once told her himself that Kami-sama doesn’t exist, and how can a detective, someone who solves cases and saves people, be a person who brings misfortune all the time? This is silly too. “Can I write about you? For my essay. Sensei said I should write about other people too. I write about Tou-san and Kaa-san and Sora-chan and Aki too much.”
Mae is six years old. Her best friends are Sora-chan who lives next door and Aki the dog, a stray that roams near the museum. She has met a new friend at the Flight Museum and he’s a detective. He always wears a blue jacket; he doesn’t like combing his hair very much. He looks sad. He’s waiting for someone in the wrong place, without even a set date.
“I got an A-”, Mae tells the detective. He drops his gaze from the young girl’s face and smiles.
“Not an A?”
“It wasn’t long enough,” Mae says.
Mae wants to show him the essay, and Aki the dog too. So they leave the museum. When they walk past the souvenir shop, Mae pours coins onto the detective’s palm and tells him she wants to buy him an ice cream. He thanks her, but instead of one ice cream he buys two strawberry ice lollies.
Mae doesn’t see Aki, but Morioka-san, who also visits the museum a lot because he used to fly fighters in the army, is sitting on the stairs with his two small dogs. They are identical. One has leaped onto the stair with ease; the other struggles. It puts its paws on the edge of the stair and barks; the old man grabs its two forelegs and hoists it onto his lap.
Under the sparse, green shade of a young Katsura tree Mae reads her essay to him. The detective raises a hand to flatten the untamed strand on the back of his head. He blinks once when Mae reads that he’s sad, but remarks nothing. He sucks at his ice lolly.
Mae sees the detective a few more times. Mostly on TV, but one time in the newspaper too, his face grainy and blurry like in the security camera footage. She is learning more things about him from TV than from the detective himself. One, his name, but she still calls him Detective-san instead of Kudo-san. Two, he doesn’t work for the police but the police work with him a lot. Three, he’s born and raised in Beika but has been away—abroad—for a few years. Four, his specialty is murder, which means the victim in the case is already dead when it becomes a case.
The detective no longer comes daily, but still frequently, two or three times a week. He knows about planes just as much as her Tou-san. But not about history, the detective has smiled and confessed once. He says a friend of his knows much more about history than he.
“Why don’t you just call her?” Mae asks.
The detective paused. He’s looking at her English homework for her, as they sit on the bench next to the glass wall that separates indoor exhibits and the lawn parking retired aircraft. “Her?”
“The person you’ve been waiting for,” Mae says. “Just tell her you’re here. She can’t come if she doesn’t know.”
“I don’t have her phone number,” the detective says. He sounds defensive and upset; he circles the wrong words on Mae’s exercise book hard: “labbit”, “wate” and “we goes to”. Mae looks across the entrance hall—the gallery looks like a small blue square. She thinks about the photo and how the detective stands in front of it. As if it means everything, and he can find every answer, every clue he needs if he looks at it long enough.
“Detective-san,” Mae calls. The detective puts the pencil down; he always listens when she calls him. Mae tries to think more slowly, and ask clearly. “That was you, right? You were the detective with that Oneesan in the photo. Are you waiting for her?”
The detective doesn’t look surprised and there are no clouds passing his face this time. “You’re a good detective, Mae-chan,” he only says.
“But I don’t want to be a detective,” Mae shakes her head. “I want to be a pilot!”
“Then you will be a pilot.”
They fall silent for seconds. The double-winged Slamson 2A2 overhead watches them. Mae feels like they are waiting for a train but the train doesn’t come. There come only faint rustles barely audible among all those noises and sounds coming from other visitors: footsteps, talking, coughing, maps folding and unfolding. The tip of her pencil touches the paper but the detective writes or circles nothing.
Mae tries again. “But you’re a super good detective. Can’t you find her?”
“It’s not that easy,” the detective doesn’t look up. “I made some mistakes. She wouldn’t want to talk to me.”
“It’s easy,” Mae insists. “Just apologize then.”
“There are too many things I’ll need to apologize for.”
“There will be more if you don’t get started,” Mae says. It’s what her Tou-san says when she doesn’t want to do her homework. “You can save up the money for museum tickets and buy a plane ticket that can go anywhere.”
Half an hour til the museum closes. Thank you for visiting our museum today, please note that we will be closing at 5:00 pm, we hope that you enjoy our exhibition during the opening hours. Kaa-san’s voice. Mae follows the detective toward the exit, past the shop. She doesn’t give the detective coins but runs to the counter herself. She buys two ice creams.
“Will you kiss her when you see her?” she asks.
“Maybe. And I said or promised anything, Mae-chan.”
“You should kiss her.”
The detective laughs. When he laughs, his eyes sparkle and shine even more than when he announces how he pinpoints the culprit in front of the camera; they are very bright and very blue. “Then I will,” he promises.
The Flight and Light photography exhibition closed after two months; the galleries now display medals and air force uniforms. Summer cools; the sun behind her eyelids when she closes her eyes is still a field of wheat but no longer burns. On good days, black and white birds flicker between the hedges surrounding the museum. The Katsura tree bronzes into a light biscuit gold, then cinnamon.
Mae doesn’t see the detective again. Not in the museum, not on TV. Tou-san says it’s a good thing. It means there are fewer crimes.
She puts her scarf on for the first time in the year, but tears it down when she runs up the museum stairs. The next exhibition after uniforms will be about spaceships, and she is helping by drawing rockets and satellites that will be put next to the signs and introductions. The guard, Masanori-san, calls after her: “Mae-chan! I’ve got a postcard for you!”
Postcard? Kaa-san sent her a postcard once, when she went on a trip to Okinawa. But no one else ever sent her postcards. Mae takes the postcard and says thanks, then runs to the bench by the glass wall. She holds her breath when she finally drops her gaze to the postcard—
It’s a city of light. It looks a little like Tokyo from the top of Bell Tree Tower, but different. The highway is a river of gold. The sky is purple and cloudless. And in the sky, a dark silhouette with wings and red and green light. A plane.
She turns the postcard over. There’s the Flight Museum’s address written in neat and familiar handwriting, and a single word: Thank you. The detective did not sign it, but she still has his handwriting on her exercise books. The stamp is Beika, Tokyo. He sent it from home.
Mae wonders if he would look happier the next time she sees him on TV; if he has found that Oneesan, and kissed her. If she sees him again, she still have many questions. Mae puts the postcard into her school bag. The night sky of Los Angeles sparkles a hundred city stars in the darkness.

(MFB OCs) Fifionne and He Li Hua Info Dump
I came up with some more information on Fifionne and He Li Hua, so I’m going to share them here so I don’t forget about them :p
Fifionne:
Fifionne is not her actual name. Legally, her name is Inari Miyata. Fifi was named after the Japanese God Inari. Her parents named her after the god itself due to their association with harvest, agriculture, and well, foxes. Miyata means "rice paddy of the shrine", also connecting to Inari in a way due to the god also being associated w/ rice.  Since Fifionne's mother is the head of the Inari Shrine in Japan (in my MFB universe), Fifionne herself has a lot of connections related to shrine maiden sort of things (hence her alt outfit I posted 1-2 weeks ago). It hasn’t been decided yet but Fifionne’s dad is some sort of agricultural business man. Fifionne originally used her current name as her English name when she went to a summer exchange program outside of Japan (not sure where but she meets He Li Hua there).
Fifionne begins to go by this name fully after the Sessho-Seki incident of 2012 (this event occurs ten years earlier than in real-life to align with the Nemesis incident since Fifionne’s evil arc occurs after). Since Fifionne is almost possessed by the spirit of Daji/Tamamo-no-mae in order to corrupt her, Fifionne forgoes her original name to try and separate herself from Inari. When Fifionne finally goes back to normal, she still uses the name Fifionne but also no longer cares if people want to call her by her normal name.
Fifionne’s original bey was a Flame Fox TH170D, but it ends up getting discarded for her new bey, Divine Fox TH170EWD.
He Li Hua:
As a proud member of the Beylin Temple, she is initially very against the Beylin Fist rejoining the Beylin Temple due to the many unjust actions committed by the Beylin Fist, including working alongside Nemesis and attempting to humiliate the Beylin Temple during Metal Fury. As someone who cares a lot about balance and harmony, she refuses to allow Aguma and the others to join the Beylin Temple unless they are able to prove they can really change for the better. This is not helped by Li Hua seeing the Beylin Fist as a nasty stain in Beylin Temple’s history and also seeing them as inferior. Team Wang Hu Zhong is split between letting in the Beylin Fist as Li Hua makes a reasonable point in her argument. She challenges Aguma to a bey battle to settle the dispute, but they draw after Li Hua realizes Aguma proves himself. Although Li Hua is still very weary and cautious of the Beylin Fist members for a period of time, she learns to get along with them and they eventually become friends some years before the events of Zero-G/Shogun Steel.
Fifionne and He Li Hua:
The two of them have some similar design motifs, mainly their hair and earrings. Fifionne has mostly white hair as many of Inari’s messengers (the god) are pure white kitsunes. However, Fifionne does not have pure white since she herself is not fully connected to the god due to her not really caring much about her shrine duties at all (hence her leaving home to pursue different paths).
Li Hua has a white to transitioning black hair to resemble Chinese ink wash paintings. This goes with the rest of her design, which is mostly achromatic asides from a few accent colors spread throughout.
Fifionne and He Li Hua are both best friends, meeting each other during a Summer exchange program. They got along very well and have been keeping in touch with one another ever since. Their earrings on matching sides is a symbol of their everlasting friendship. This is especially so since the two of them have associations with longevity and immortality.
Even though they seem quite similar to one another, their ideals and perspectives are quite different. He Li Hua is a lot less selfish or willing to step on others to get what they want in comparison to Fifionne. Fifionne is not afraid to be mean or pull nasty tricks to get what she wants.
He Li Hua is much more traditional in comparison to Fifionne. While He Li Hua is happy to maintain her strict family traditions, Fifionne couldn’t care less about working as a shrine maiden at all. While she loves that her family has such a strong connection to foxes, Fifionne has no interest in confining herself to the family temple. She is more adventurous by nature, and wants to have the freedom to pursue the things she cares for most. It’s not to say He Li Hua or Fifionne is better in what they want to do, people have unique interests and the two are no different.

Here is just some of the information. I have quite a lot of things to say about design elements for the two of them but that would make this post infinitely longer so I think I’ll save that for another time...
