George Washington
George Washington (1732-1799) was an American military officer and statesman who led the Continental Army to victory during the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783) and served as the first President of the United States (1789-1797). Often regarded as the ‘Father of His Country’, Washington remains one of the most revered and iconic figures in U.S. history.
Early Life
George Washington was born at 10 am on 22 February 1732 at Pope’s Creek plantation in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He was the first of six children born to Augustine Washington, a wealthy Virginian landowner, and his second wife Mary Ball Washington; George also had four older half-siblings from his father’s first marriage. Little is known about George’s childhood. His early years were mostly spent on the family property of Ferry Farm on the Rappahannock River, and he likely attended school in Fredericksburg, Virginia, where he excelled in the subjects of geometry, trigonometry, and mapmaking. When his father suddenly died in 1743, 11-year-old George inherited Ferry Farm as well as ten enslaved people. Too young to fend for himself, he went to live with his eldest half-brother, Lawrence Washington (b.1718), at Mount Vernon. George idolized Lawrence, who he came to regard as both a father figure and a best friend.
George’s aptitude for mathematics led him to consider a career as a land surveyor, a respectable path to wealth and social advancement. In 1748, at the age of 16, he embarked on his first expedition into the Shenandoah Valley to survey the property of his influential neighbor, Thomas Fairfax. The next year, he earned his surveyor’s license and, through Fairfax’s patronage, was appointed surveyor for Culpeper County. Over the next three years, Washington completed 200 surveying expeditions and measured a total of 60,000 acres along Virginia’s western frontier. But just as George's career was taking off, Lawrence came down with tuberculosis. In November 1751, he went to the Caribbean island of Barbados in the hopes that the tropical air would improve his condition. George accompanied him, and contracted a painful case of smallpox during his brief stay on the island. George soon recovered but Lawrence was not so lucky, as he died shortly after returning to Virginia in 1752. After his brother's death, George started leasing Mount Vernon from Lawrence’s widow and became the legal owner of the property after her own death in 1761.
In 1753, George Washington reached the age of maturity, and was eager to find a way to make a name for himself. He would soon have an opportunity. The French had begun to construct forts on the forks of the Ohio River, fertile territory that had been claimed by Virginia. In November, Washington was sent as an envoy to demand that the French vacate the Ohio Country at once. On his journey into the west, he was joined by Christopher Gist, an experienced frontiersman and guide, and Tanacharison, a Mingo chieftain called the ‘Half-King’ by Virginians. It was Tanacharison who gave Washington the Seneca name of ‘Conotocaurius’ or ‘Devourer of Villages’, in reference to Washington’s great-grandfather, who had helped expel Native Americans from their lands in Virginia. The small party reached the French Fort LeBoeuf during a snowstorm; although they were received cordially by the fort’s commander, Washington’s demands were firmly rebuffed. Washington then embarked on his trek back to Virginia which included several perilous episodes. While crossing the icy Alleghany River in a raft, Washington fell overboard, and likely would have drowned had Gist not pulled him from the water.

HTTYD Antarctica AU
I have been playing with this AU for a while, it's basically a modern HTTYD AU, but the riders are researchers for a base in antarctica. the base is called "the edge" and they bring their pets with them.
Hiccup is a technician and engineer for the base, he brought toothless with him, who I headcanon as a melanistic Norwegian forest cat. he also has his pilot's license and six different 3D printers, and a clock radio that can somehow run Doom.
I want to say that Astrid is the surveyor and radio operator of the group, she often goes out in the plane to conduct surveys of the weather and land, basically a glorified scout. she is also in charge of the base's safety. she is also Hiccup's right hand man, and I head canon stormfly to be a golden blue macaw.
Snotlout is just there to be with his friends and impress his dad. He does do maintenance work and keep log books. he does have a journal about his time at the base that he plans on publishing titled "how the toilet somehow froze over, and other stories from antarctica.". I think I want hookfang to be a Doberman maybe?
Fishlegs is the medic, he once had to perform surgery on himself after his appendix exploded. he survived the surgery, he also once allowed his nieces and nephews to come visit him and Meatlug (who is a kunekune pig) during the summer months.
Ruffnut and tuffnut are just there for the heck of it, they run their own youtube channel that documents their trip, and Tuffnut is the unofficial cook. like Snotlout, they perform odd jobs around the base. there was an incident where they ran out of food and had to wait a week before a new shipment came, all they had in the fridge were a box of lucky charms cereal, ketchup, mustard, sweet chili sauce, a few tortillas, a half eaten tin of kippers, and one of Hiccup's open can of Monster. they had to somehow make a meal out of that. Barf and Belch are a two headed green tree python.
Heather joins the group later as a way to escape her drug addict brother, Dagur. she later goes undercover on board of an illegal whaling ship run by Viggo and his crew and almost gets killed. Windshear is an african grey parrot.

Nott never met the riders before until she signs up for the trip as another medic after Fishleg's appendix went boom. she has albinism and is very light sensitive and is legally blind without her glasses that she choses not to wear for just how thick the lenses are, to her they're like two mason jar lids being held together by a wire. she is mostly active at night and is very shy and quiet and is really only seen with Fishlegs. her pet is an axolotl that glows under a black light named Marauder. basically Marauder is a modern day version of the Flightmare.

Hey, I just came across your blog and get the feeling that you're involved in the environmental and education sector. It's something I've been wanting to get into, but there's so much out there that I don't know where to start. Do you have any good resources on career paths and short/MSc courses?
I am! It's a big ole' sector, that is true; from our course we've had people head off into fields as disparate as land management, flood defence, sustainable fashion, environmental law, recycling firms, research science, environmental engineering, government work, sustainability advisory for companies, environmental activism, wildlife conservation, renewable energies... the list goes on.
If you feel comfortable shooting me a private message off anon and telling me the sort of things you've done so far (undergrad degree topic, for example) and roughly where you are in the world, I can probably be more specific. But my generic advice is that for the best shot you need two things, to whit:
A qualification to at least undergrad level in an environment-related subject
At least a year's experience (but volunteering while you study is 100% valid and volunteering opportunities are plentiful)
So an MSc could work very well for point one. If you have a specific idea about which way to run you can pick a course that will let you specialise; for example, University of South Wales offers one in Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technology. If you're wanting a broader course that will give you the foundation you need while keeping you more employable to a wider variety of fields, on the other hand, UWTSD have Environmental Conservation and Management. I think both of those can be done part time over two years, too - the UWTSD one definitely can, so if you're working at the same time (or even just... want a more leisurely pace), that makes things easier.
For point two, you really can find volunteering opportunities very easily. Pick a few in different fields and have fun.
ALSO, if you're UK based, I can tell you right now that we are in desperate need of botanists and bat workers. For botany, practice is key, but ecology firms across the land will run little evening courses to teach you ID for certain plant families, like grasses or winter trees or what have you.
For bat work, you attend an ecology firm's evening class on how to survey bats, then you go with them as a volunteer surveyor to start working towards 100 hours of bat surveys. After a while, especially if you're also working towards an official MSc, they will take you on as a seasonal ecologist (April-September), which is paid work. Once you have 100 hours under your belt, you can get your bat license. This makes you VERY MUCH more likely to then get a Junior Ecologist job somewhere. Particularly considering that ecology firms love offering graduate schemes.
Oh, and GIS. Your MSc will teach you it, if you go down that route, but if you don't, download QGIS and follow some of the many tutorials online - it's all free, but it's vital these days across the sector. Well; unless you go into law or fashion, I guess.

Olayinka Herbert Samuel Heelas Badmus Macaulay (November 14, 1864 – May 7, 1946) was a Nigerian Nationalist, politician, surveyor, engineer, architect, journalist, and musician and is considered by many Nigerians as the founder of Nigerian nationalism.
He was born in Broad Street, Lagos to the family of Thomas Babington Macaulay and Abigail Crowther. His father was one of the sons of Ojo Oriare while Abigail Crowther was the daughter of Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther, a descendant of King Abiodun. His father was the founder of the first secondary school in Nigeria, the CMS Grammar School, he joined his maternal uncle’s trade steamer and embarked on a trade and missionary journey across the Niger River visiting Bonny, Lokoja, Gbebe, and Brass. He took a job as a clerical assistant and indexer at the Department of Public Works, Lagos. He left Lagos to further his training in England. He studied Civil Engineering in Plymouth, England. He became a graduate of the Royal Institute of British Architects. He was an accomplished musician who received a certificate in music from Trinity College and a certificate in violin playing from Music International College.
Upon his return to Lagos, he resumed work with the colonial service as a surveyor of Crown Lands. He left the service as a land inspector in September 1898 due to a growing distaste for the British rule of the Lagos Colony. He obtained a license to practice as a surveyor. As a surveyor, his plans and valuations included E. J. Alex Taylor’s house on Victoria Street, Henry Carr’s residence in Tinubu, Akinola Maja’s house, and Doherty Villa in Campos Square.
He married Caroline Pratt (1898-99), the daughter of an African Superintendent of Police. Their marriage came to an end upon her death during childbirth. While he never remarried in the Church, he had liaisons including Ms. da Souza, from whom he had several children, as well as companionships who bore no children.
