I have a great relationship with some student groups on campus, and answer questions over their Discord server. We really need to be going where we are wanted and where the students actually want to be.

Barbara Gordon's Coding & Computer Cram School is a popular YouTube series. Tucker Foley is a star student.
Barbara Gordon's Cram School posts free online courses for both coding and computer engineering. Think Crash Course in terms of entertainment, but college lecture in terms of depth. Hundreds of thousands of viewers flock to it— students who missed a class, people looking to add new skills to a resume, even simple hobbyists. It’s a project Barbara’s proud of.
Sometimes, when she wants to relax, she’ll even hop in the comments and spend an afternoon troubleshooting a viewer’s project with them.
User “Fryer-Tuck” has especially interesting ones. Barbara finds herself seeking out his comments, checking in on whatever this crazy kid is making next. An app for collecting GPS pings and assembling them on a map in real-time, an algorithm that connects geographic points to predict something’s movement taking a hundred other variables into account, simplified versions of incredibly complex homemade programs so they can run on incredibly limited CPU’s.
(Barbara wants to buy the kid a PC. It seems he’s got natural talent, but he keeps making reference to a PDA. Talk about 90’s! This guy’s hardware probably predates his birth.)
She chats with him more and more, switching to less public PM threads, and eventually, he opens up. His latest project, though, is not something Barbara has personal experience with.
FT: so if you found, hypothetically, a mysterious glowing substance that affects tech in weird and wacky ways that could totally have potential but might be vaguely sentient/otherworldly…. what would you do and how would you experiment with it. safely, of course. and hypothetically
BG: I’d make sure all my tests were in disposable devices and quarantined programs to keep it from infecting my important stuff. Dare I ask… how weird and wacky is it?
FT: uhhh. theoretically, a person composed of this substance once used it to enter a video game. like physical body, into the computer, onto the screen? moving around and talking and fighting enemies within the game?
FT: its been experimented with before, but not on any tech with a brain. just basic shields and blasters and stuff, its an energy source. also was put in a car once
FT: i wanna see how it affects software, yk? bc i already know it can. mess around and see how far i can push it
BG: […]
FT: … barbara?
BG: Sorry, thinking. Would you mind sharing more details? You said “blasters?”
Honestly. Kid genius with access to some truly wacky materials and even wackier weapons, she needs to start a file on him before he full sends to either hero or villain.
[OR: Tucker is a self-taught hacker, but if he were to credit a teacher, he'd name Barbara Gordon's Coding & Computer Cram School! He's even caught the attention of Dr. Gordon herself. She's full of sage advice, and with how she preaches the value of a good VPN, he's sure she's not pro-government. Maybe she'll help him as he studies the many applications of ecto-tech!]
#she does end up sending tucker a PC lol#and after she learns he has experience supporting a superhero team maybe pushes his name forward to WEs outreach program for r&d potentials#picks him up by the scruff and says MY coding buddy#also fun fact she had a phd in library science at one point. i like that about her i think we should talk about it a little more#also tucker was making a ghost reporting & tracking app for amity parkers#dpxdc#dcxdp#barbara gordon#tucker foley#prompt#kipwrite

I don’t know how many people know this but you can access audiobooks, e-books, movies, shows, documentary’s, comics, news papers, and magazines from your personal device so long as you have a library card. Like no joke you don’t need to buy subscriptions to audible or nat geo or ny times or any of that. I know mine even has a language learning app you have access to through the library card. A lot of public library’s also have baking pans and different things you can check out as well as public outreach programs that help foster community. I’ve listened to so many audiobooks since remembering libraries exist and it’s honestly great. Get a library card, encourage others to get a library card, especially kids there’s so much cool stuff going on there.

Not to beat a dead horse, but LIBRARIES literally will give you online access to TV and movies for free without having to pirate them. They also have recordings of theatre productions!! I just watched David Tennants Richard ii FOR FREE with a really high quality recording FROM THE LIBRARY!!!! Everyone needs to GET A LIBRARY CARD!!!!
My library also has access to programs that can help you make your own legal documents if you can't afford an attorney but need things like wills or bills of sale or lease agreements!!
There is concerts and and documentaries and operas and Ballets from carnegie hall and the Palace of Versailles and other world class theaters!
They have coding courses! IELTS training!! News paper access that usually requires a subscription! Audio books! Music! Tickets to events and museums and aquariums and art galleries and carnivales and park passes and youth programs!!!
There is literally no reason to not have a library card. They're free.

dont watch white collar unless you want to be systematically dapperized at once. man i'm used to be normie-to-casual-butch. now im like okay how soon can i get some loafers to replace my sweaty old navy moccasins and how do i know when a vest fits they're fucking. dandyfying me
#okay i DO have occasional forays into femme as a dressyup kind of thing#but my general day to day is jeans. whatever shoes aren't covered in grass or mud. tshirt. done#and now im like. what IF i wore ties to work. what IF#i wouldnt. thats ridiculous. i work at a public library and my boss is obsessed with *community outreach* so if i started wearing ties#he would absolutely give me job duties i am not trained for and do not want on the basis of if you look fancy you can talk to the mayor#but . im wine drunk and enjoying the vision of me as a dapper guy all of a sudden#q

TRUE STORY: When I visited the JFK Campus Library yesterday, one boy in particular had a very big reaction to the news that public library service could be cut from six days a week down to five if the proposed budget cuts go through. He said, and I quote,
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
... which seemed entirely appropriate for anyone realizing that visiting their public library on a Saturday could be a thing of the past.
He signed one of our budget support letters, and passed it to me with a loud CH-CHING sound, which also seemed appropriate.
He was interested in lots of free stuff that I had at my table, but he was definitely most interested in the "selfie" sign I brought along, which promoted our #NoCutsToLibraries message. He then proceeded to take lots of pictures with this sign, both alone and with his friends. My personal favorite photo is one that I can, in fact, share on social media:
My thanks to all of the students and teachers who stopped by my table yesterday, who picked up library swag, who signed letters of support, and who stopped by just to tell me why libraries are important to them.
Today is our Day of Action for Libraries. Learn more about it, and learn what you can do to help:

whatever career I end up in, I need it to be one where I don't have to be creative. I am way too dumb to be making fun and educational posters, let me just write an essay and pin that to the board instead
#//juri speaks#laying on the floor; suffering; dying; etc#very firmly crossing ''outreach and student engagement'' off my list of library domains i might like to work in#also trying not to worry about the far off probably-wont-happen-anyway plans for more degrees falling apart#bc i fear i wont be creative enough to gen up some original research idea#all im good at is following procedures to the fucking letter#and thats not the kind of person anyone wants to hire unless they're the military 😭#everyone just wants creative self starting go-getters and i have too many fuckin mental eels for that shit#anyway this has been your ''it's rainy and im sad'' mental breakdown of the day#now back to your regularly scheduled other posts made by people capable of doing things

those spotify games (wrapped, put your playlist on shuffle, etc.) don't work on me because i listen to music Wrong
#brain things#by wrong i mean in a way not conducive to marketability#but also just extremely autistically#i hyperfixate on an album for weeks#i one time got montero's call me by your name so stuck in my head#that i had to listen to just that one song on loop for 2+ hrs#spotify is not reflective of all the albums i listen to bc i buy/download some immediately#i've probably listened to unreal unearth...30+ times (like the whole album) in the last month#but this is not reflected in my spotify bc i just bought the album on my phone#i refuse to buy spotify premium bc i can't handle another monthly bill rn so i only use spotify when i'm willing to deal with ads#AND YET my spotify library does reflect my music tastes#it's just also not useful for selling me shit#eta: yes this reads like ''i'm not like other girls''#but this is less a brag than...an outreach for the other ppl who listen wrong#like hey. we could be in communion.

#finally went for a walk today! first time I've gone out for fun in genuinely a very long time. two months at least#there's a little convenience store by the side of the road a five minute walk away from the apartment so I always grab a snack#because rewarding incredible bravery is good and I deserve a treat for leaving the house voluntarily#I still need to go get a library card but at least I've walked by the library now#plus I finally walked by the local lgbt outreach center / community group location. I've been meaning to for months#they apparently meet tomorrow so I'm gonna try and work up the courage to go because I really do need to not be so alone#I need friends who aren't aggressively cishet normies. I need queer community so fucking much.#anyway hopefully I'll go tomorrow. but even if I don't.. today was a success! and that's enough for me#tag talk

Sorry to everyone who’s enjoyed the last 130 years of science and culture journalism, but Disney needs the money to fund Toy Story 9
#wow#this is so sad#i remember in primary school we had a lot of national geographic magazines in the library#and my friend and i went at least once a week (some weeks even every day) to look at them and take notes so we could play scientists with a#actual scientific base#we always said my friend would become a biologist and i would become an archaeologist so we could make our own national geographics#i did end up becoming an archaeologist#i never changed my mind ever since then when i was 8 years old until i graduated uni with the highest grade of the archaeology promotion#and an important part of that comes from having seen the national geographics in school!#it's sad... it has inspired so many generations#but guess it's all about money. that's why the nat geo tv channel airs those bs pseudoscience ancient aliens kind of shows#using their good name and the reputation as a valid source for outreach they have to further anti-science beliefs just for money#that was already such a betrayal#this is where lots of journalism is heading though since now we don't buy the newspapers and magazines any more and expect them to be free#but still have workers to make it who need to get paid
