A+ Resource for School Librarians
How to make a library card/student ID for a new student after the official school IDs have already been ordered
So school pictures and retakes have come and gone and a new student arrives at your school library (or perhaps a student who was absent on both picture day and retake day).
What you will need:
Their name and student ID number (if you keep student IDs in your library instead of with the students, I'd suggest also getting their class name/number)
This link (we'll get to it in a minute)
Some thicker paper (e.g. cardstock)
A printer
Some cute stickers
Scissors
1. If the student isn't on the library OPAC yet, make sure to put them in.
2. Go to the link mentioned above.
It should take you to a free barcode maker run by a trusted barcode scanner company called Wasp. It allows you to make several kinds of barcodes; if you're not sure which kind you have, you probably have one that can read 3 of 9 Standard (it's the most common kind of barcode)
Tumblr media
3. Put in the number for the student's barcode.
4. Put in your email address where they'll send the barcode image to your email
5. Make a word doc with 2 columns and 4 rows
6. Insert the image of the barcode and the student info your school cards have (e.g. class, student name, etc) and print the page.
7. On the empty side of the front of the card, get the student to pick a sticker to put in in the place of their photo.
If you have room, you can also use some cute washi tape to decorate the card.
Tumblr media
8. Laminate the cards so they last longer.
The end!

get some books
libby is a free app which allows you to use your library card to check out books.
if your library card doesn't give you acces to the book you want, you can always apply for another.
they won't send you to jail for applying for a library card and getting rejected.
some libraries have free nonresident cards, some have cards that cost as little as 5, 10, 15 dollars.
don't rely on reddit lists to tell you what libraries offer nonresident cards because everybody is searching "free nonresident library cards reddit", which results in a flood of traffic which causes those libraries to close their free nonresident cards. stop it.
just work your way through libraries starting with those closest to you.
if you pay local taxes somewhere, you may be eligible for their library card. like if you own property there, if you work there part of the year, if you live there part of the year.
if you want a book really badly and you can't afford to buy it but you can afford the 1-year paid nonresident card for a library, you can have a year of access to that book and probably dozens of similar books for less than the cost of the first book.
openlibrary works just like any other digital library service btw so if you're willing to wait for a book to become available you can use that to your heart's content as well.
also, if it's public domain it's probably on gutenberg project for free. if it's a political text it might be on a certain other library for free. since both of those sites offer versions in plain text or html, you can use screenreaders. homemade audiobook right there.
i use pericles for firefox to listen to books

can any person in the world get a library card in your library if they pay (non-resident) or are there any restrictions?
The only restriction we know of would be on payment method. If you can pay with PayPal, Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or Diner's Club, you can get a card. (We take cash too, of course, but one assumes you won't be visiting in person any time soon.)
A paid library card gets you access to anything our taxpayers have access to. Here's what's included.
Now, be aware that if an app is not available in a particular country's app store there isn't anything we can do about that. For example, if the Libby app isn't available to download in your country and that's what you're looking for, getting a library card here won't help you get the app on your phone. You might still be able to use the browser version of Libby, but I'd check before paying for a card.
If you'd like a card and you have a non-U.S. address, the process is a little complicated (due to the fact that our online library card application only accepts US format addresses) but you can start by going to www.lcplin.org/ask and letting us know that you are outside the U.S. and would like to purchase a card. Include your address and our amazing circulation staff will take over from there.
Don't include your payment information - you won't have to pay until we get your account set up and get you your log in information.
(Bear with us, though - we've only recently been able to offer this option and very, very few people have taken us up on it, so the process is still a little clunky.)

(Long Post) Chosen, Dark and Purple’s library cards.
(The first one is the back of Chosen’s library card)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The librarian told Dark he could decorate his card with stickers. He got carried away and put stickers on Chosen and Purple’s cards too.
In the Reconfigured Dark AU Chosen picked new names for himself and for Dark to put on their library cards. He’s still nervous about Sticks knowing them as Chosen and Dark. Around Alan, King, Purple, Gold, Vic and the Color Gang, they’re still called Chosen and Dark.
A lot of Created Sticks like to change the names that their Creators gave them and it’s easy for them to go to a courthouse and get their name changed officially to whatever they want. Sticks will basically always be on the side of any Stick who escaped from their Creator.
In the Reconfigured Dark AU, not many Sticks recognize Chosen or Dark as the ones who rampaged across the internet since there are some Hollowheads or Fake Hollowheads who have the same colors. Dark being a baby helps with them staying pretty unnoticed, plus it’s been long enough for most Sticks that the fear about them wreaking havoc again has died down a lot.
It takes some time but Chosen will eventually stop being nervous that anyone will recognize him and Dark.

It's true that at branches of the New York Public Library, we get visitors from many far and exotic locations. And some of those locations have their own library cards!
Here's a library card that a recent visitor showed me. This card is from the Queens Public Library system, and it features Mr. Met and Mrs. Met, who are the mascots of the New York Mets baseball team. [Sometimes they look a little more terrifying, but even I must admit that they're pretty cute on this library card!]
Fun Fact: New York City has three different library systems:
New York Public Library (Bronx / Manhattan / Staten Island)
Queens Public Library
Brooklyn Public Library
You can return the items you checked out from one library to any other library, as long as it's in the same system.
Each library system has its own criteria for membership. Even if you don't live in that borough, you may be eligible for a digital card that could be used for ebooks and other digital resources. Visit those websites to learn more about each system!

anyone wonder why we pay for library cards if we i've in a different county? its literally a piece of paper and plastic sheets.
some libraries even make u pay for time on a. computer,
one library by me does that and its finny because they often rent out their pace outside , because its a nice pale for events, parties ect. like shouldn't that be implemented in the funding? like some of the interior looks like it hasn't been updated sine 96. like I KNOW that carpet haunts been cleaned, even the computers aren't new.
so where is all this money going?
its a COUNTY library -__-
and its in a wealthy county lol
likeeee..........

To celebrate the opening of the "The Book of HOV” exhibition to the public, the Brooklyn Public Library had special bookmarks and library cards with JAY-Z’s likeness and album covers on them. (7/14/23)

Has Christmas come early? (I have a gift...)
Earlier every year it seems because it is harder and harder to get back into the black. I should know. I own a business.
Meanwhile, I have a gift for everyone! At least everyone in the US. Library cards! Free online library cards for places where you don't live. Most of the time you at least have to be in the state to sign up for a card and sometimes you have to pick it up in person, BUT it expands your online borrowing options what feels like exponentially!
It is Christmas! (pretend i'm swimming in a pile of books, which i imagine is quite difficult and might damage them =/ )
